WA DOT Reviewing Three Megaprojects OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) New state Transportation Department Secretary Lynn Peterson has ordered a review of three megaprojects: a new Interstate 5 bridge crossing the Columbia River, and the new Highway 520 floating bridge and the tunnel replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle. Each project costs billions of dollars. Peterson said the assessment would be led by a program manager of the CH2M Hill engineering company, Ron Paananen. He’s the former DOT project director of the Seattle tunnel project. His review is due by the end of September. AED Tells House Subcommittee Shale Energy Has Broad Economic Benefits

The shale gas and oil boom’s economic impact is being felt well beyond the energy sector, two Associated Equipment Distributors’ (AED) board members told the House Energy & Mineral Resources Subcommittee March 14. Whit Perryman, CEO of Vermeer Equipment of Texas-Louisiana and AED’s 2013 vice president, and Don Shilling, president of General Equipment & Supplies and AED’s 2013 senior vice president, said shale energy development resulting from improvements in hydraulic fracturing has led to new business activity and growth for their companies, the construction industry, and their communities. The two were testifying at a hearing entitled, “America’s Onshore Energy Resources: Creating Jobs, Securing America, and Lowering Prices.” “My company is not unique in having been positively impacted by the shale energy boom. AED estimates the economic impact of the equipment revenues from shale energy activity

reported in Texas at well over $2.4 billion,” Perryman said to lawmakers. “Not only has the energy boon allowed me to hire more workers at higher salaries, it has benefited communities across Texas and Louisiana. Families that once lived on nearly worthless property are now leasing their land and mineral rights. Unemployment is at all-time lows. Companies are reinvesting in their businesses and expanding, which is benefiting workers and creating new tax revenues,” Perryman said. In addition to discussing how domestic energy extraction has benefited his company and customers in the Dakotas, Shilling spoke on the importance of letting states take the lead in regulating energy development and enacting legislation to streamline the permitting process on federal lands. Shilling was testifying in both his AED capacity and on behalf of the Energy Equipment and Infrastructure Alliance (EEIA), a newly-created organization representing industries and workers supporting energy devel-

opment. “The economic, job creation, and national security benefits of shale energy development are clear. However, in order for the economy to reap the full reward from shale energy, the federal government must refrain from micromanaging the industry and defer to state regulators,” Shilling said. “EEIA strongly supports legislation to amend the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to include North and South Dakota in a federal permit streamlining a pilot project located at the Bureau of Land Management’s Miles City, Mont., field office. The proposal will help reduce the wait for permits to drill on federal lands, which means more economic growth and opportunity for my company, my employees, and my customers, not to mention lower energy prices for American consumers and manufacturers.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Terex Corp. Enters Agreement to Divest Roadbuilding Assets Terex Corporation has entered into a contract to divest its Roadbuilding operations in Brazil and certain mobile roadbuilding product lines in the United States to the Fayat Group (Bomag and Marini). Product lines being divested include asphalt plants and pavers manufactured in Porto Allegre, Brazil, and assets for the asphalt paver, reclaimer stabilizer and material transfer product lines, which are currently manufactured in Oklahoma City. The transaction is anticipated to close during the first quarter. Terex has determined that it will be exiting the remaining roadbuilding product lines that it manufactures in Oklahoma City, and has taken charges in connection with the business assets being sold and the remaining Oklahoma City roadbuilding assets to reflect the likely realizable value in a transaction. The amount of these charges that will impact the fourth quarter 2012 results, when reported, is approximately $15 million. Terex will continue manufacturing operations in Oklahoma City for its product lines not affected by this transaction. Ron DeFeo, Terex chairman and chief executive officer, said. “The decision to exit most of our roadbuilding product lines is another step in the repositioning of Terex. We continue to focus on improving our Construction segment performance as well as the company’s overall returns on invested capital, and this transaction is part of that process.” For more information, call 203/222-7170 or visit www.terex.com.

Golden Gate Bridge Albuquerque-Based Crane Service Adds Makes Switch to Terex AC 250-1 All-Terrain Crane to Fleet Digital Toll System

Drivers approaching the majestic Golden Gate Bridge will experience something new for the first time in 76 years: no human toll collectors.

Drivers approaching the majestic Golden Gate Bridge will experience something new for the first time in 76 years: no human toll collectors. The toll takers were removed in favor of cheaper and faster electronic transponders, and a camera system photographs every license plate that comes through, mailing an invoice to each motorist who doesn’t prepay. Those who fail to pay will receive warnings and could ultimately have a hold placed on their vehicle registration at the California Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition to saving money, the move is expected to improve traffic flow on the majestic span that opened in 1937. When their final shifts working on the bridge ended, the toll collectors forced their mouths into smiles, hugged each other tightly and cried as they left their booths for the last time. Some were angry and said their contribution — helping people with directions, giving a warm greeting to a regular commuter — will be missed. ‘Our DNA is embedded in this bridge ... we are part of it,” said Jacquie Dean, a career toll collector who had worked on the burnt-orange span for 18 years before her last shift. “Some customers still want to pay cash. They don't want to be tracked and photographed.” Many drivers have switched to the FasTrak devices that attach to a car’s windshield and allow motorists to speed through the toll booths for a dollar less than cash payers. “It was a difficult decision and involved the loss of some very dedicated staff,” said Mary Currie, spokeswoman of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District. The switchover is expected to save about $16 million in salaries and benefits over eight years. Nine toll takers will lose their jobs. Another 17 have either been placed in other district positions or have retired, Currie said. The people who loved working on the bridge said the job was something they’d planned on keeping until retirement. “I never thought that I would ever end my career at the bridge,” Dawnette Reed, 43, who started working in the bridge gift shop at 16 and, after a stint in the U.S. Army, became a toll collector at age 26. “The bridge won't be the same without us.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Albuquerque-based Crane Service, Inc. has taken delivery of a new 275 ton (250 t) capacity class Terex AC 250-1 all-terrain crane. Equipped with all available options, including offset hydraulic jib, it made its debut in Abilene, Texas, hoisting down a neon sign from the Bank of America building, the tallest office building in Abilene, which required 280 ft. (85 m) of boom and jib. The AC 250-1 joins a recently purchased AC100/4L which, according to Crane Service Inc. President, Scott Wilson, was one of the reasons why the AC 250-1 was the preferred choice of the heavy hoisting specialist. “We decided on this model based on our relationship with Terex and our positive experience of the AC100/4L,” said Wilson. “We were impressed by the main boom combinations and the 80 meter full power boom was a definite advantage. Not to mention the crane’s impressive lifting capacities across the

board,” he continued. “Its exceptional maneuverability and flexibility were another benefit. The counterweight configurations/options make it operationally and logistically very friendly, especially here in the United States, and, of course, the cost per tonnage capacity is a real boon.” The AC 250-1 fills a gap in the company’s product line-up enabling it to

better serve its customers across the greater southwest. “There is a market for this size of crane,” said Scott Wilson. “An increasing number of our customers now have heavy lifts and need longer boom options. This crane will enable us to meet this need.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Construction Employment Expands in Two-Thirds of All States in January ’13 EMPLOYMENT from page 1

Texas (28,500 jobs, 5.0 percent) added the most new construction jobs over the past 12 months, followed by California (17,600 jobs, 3.0 percent) and Washington. Among states losing construction jobs during the past year, Arkansas lost the highest percentage (minus 10.5 percent, minus 5,100 jobs), followed by Rhode Island (minus 8.0 percent, minus 1,300 jobs); Montana (minus 7.2 percent, minus 1,700 jobs) and South Dakota (minus 6.4 percent, minus 1,400 jobs). Illinois lost the most jobs (minus 9,800 jobs, minus 5.0 percent); followed by Virginia (minus 7,500 jobs, minus 4.2 percent); Ohio (minus 5,200 jobs, minus 2.8 percent) and Arkansas. Simonson noted that 34 states and D.C. added construction jobs between December and January, while employment slipped in 14 states and held steady in two states. Wyoming had the largest percentage increase (4.6 percent, 1,000 jobs); followed by New York (4.2 percent, 13,000 jobs). New York added the largest number of jobs, by far — probably reflecting recovery work from Hurricane Sandy. Alaska and South Dakota had no change in construction employment over the month, while 14 states lost jobs, with Arkansas having the steepest percentage drop (minus 5.0 percent, minus 2,300 jobs); followed by Kansas (minus 4.0 percent, minus 2,200 jobs). Arkansas lost the largest number of jobs for the month; followed by Kansas and Pennsylvania

(minus 2,200 jobs, minus 1.0 percent). “Construction spending has been rising for two full years but contractors have been cautious about adding workers until they knew the upturn would last,” Simonson explained. “In 2013, both residential and private nonresidential construction should rise enough to offset a further slowdown in public work, and contractors will be looking for more workers.” Association officials said the cuts in federal funding for construction triggered both by the so-called sequestration that took effect earlier this month and by spending bills now advancing in Congress would fall hardest on construction employers in states that have a large federal government presence. They urged lawmakers to address out-of-control entitlement spending instead of making disproportionate cuts to funding for essential infrastructure and military projects. “Canceling construction investments will ultimately worsen the deficit by undermining the nation’s growth and competitiveness,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “Meanwhile, the burden falls unfairly on states that host large military facilities, as well as states with extensive federal lands, research and energy installations.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Tips on How to Choose the Best Telehandler Attachment By Brian Boeckman SPECIAL TO CEG

Telehandlers provide a convenient way to move many types and sizes of loads. When properly selected, a variety of attachments that fit on the end of the telehandler boom can enhance the versatility and performance of these machines. Determining the optimum attachment for a particular application requires a thorough understanding of the load you are moving. That means asking a number of questions: What are the width, length and height of the load? Is it palletized for forks, or will the load require a sling? How heavy is the load, and where is its center of gravity? Answers to these questions will direct operators to the attachment best suited to perform the task at hand. Common to most job sites are standard carriages that enable operators to pick and place an assortment of materials, from pallets of concrete block to loads of lumber. They typically come in a variety of widths (JLG offers 50, 60, and 72 in. [127, 152 and 183 cm] widths), so carriages should be selected to accommodate the width of the load. Fork length should also be selected to accommodate the length of the load. JLG offers 48-, 60-, and 72-in. [122, 152 and 183 cm] forks as well as a 90-in. (228 cm) fork extension for longer loads. In addition to width and fork length, carriages vary according to their ability to tilt forward and aft as well as side to side. Standard carriages provide the operator with the ability to tilt

the forks forwards and backwards. Side-tilt carriages tilt side to side for more precise placement and retrieval, while side-shift carriages make it possible to slide a load 4 in. (10 cm) to the right or left during placement by moving the forks side to side on the carriage. This is especially helpful in warehouse applications or applications that require load retrieval or placement through a window. Another carriage option is the swing carriage, which rotates up to 90 degrees to the right or left, allowing operators to swing and place longer loads through windows and in confined areas, or where exact positioning is required. In addition, a dual fork positioning carriage provides the ability to adjust the position of each fork independently, allowing the operator to handle a variety of palletized loads without having to leave the cab. Buckets provide operators with another useful tool. A standard utility or material bucket is an effective and efficient tool to scoop and carry loose materials around the job site, including gravel, dirt, mulch and other small debris. To tackle larger tasks, including clean-up associated with natural disasters, many telehandler manufacturers offer grapple buckets, which feature a hydraulic grapple arm that clamps down to grab bulky materials and secure the load. Truss booms offer a means to move suspended loads and are primarily used to set trusses, frames, and beams for wood and steel building construction. Available with or without a winch, the booms come in dif-

ferent sizes and provide the operator with extra reach capabilities without requiring a larger machine. Suspended loads also can be handled with a lifting hook. The hook slips onto the carriage forks, adding versatility to the carriage and allowing operators to lift awkward objects, like septic tanks and generators without removing the carriage. Finally, personal work platforms extend the capabilities of the telehandler and improve job site efficiency and productivity by lifting material and persons to working heights when there is no safer alternative. The forkmounted attachment can move brick layers and mortar from one level of scaffolding to the next, lift inspectors for roof inspections, elevate electricians and spools of cable to transformers, and lift maintenance workers to replace parking lot lights. To gain the full benefit of each of these attachments, operators are advised to answer the questions originally posed in this article and review the load chart that accompanies each piece of equipment. In addition, it makes sense to consult with the local rental store or telehandler dealer to ensure the best match of attachment to the defined scope of work. By taking these simple steps, operators will more fully appreciate the versatility of the telehandler as a job site work tool, and its ability to meet a wide variety of jobs faster and with greater ease. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

World of Asphalt, AGG1 2013 Conclude Successful Run

W

orld of Asphalt and AGG1 2013 concluded a successful run March 21: a sold-out show floor with record exhibit space, near-record registered attendance, more co-located industry groups and meetings than ever before, and record education ticket sales. “We’ve received excellent positive feedback on the shows’ value to bring together so many qualified buyers and sellers in one place, and for the networking and dialog with peers from across North America and internationally,” stated Show Manager Rich Prausa. The co-located 2013 World of Asphalt Show & Conference and AGG1 Aggregates Academy & Expo were held March 19 to 21 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Near-record registered attendance topped 6,000 at close of the shows. Registrants came from all 50 states, 8 Canadian provinces and 50 other countries worldwide. More than onethird were company presidents/owners, vice presidents, general managers or chief financial officers, and all together more than 84 percent of registrants were in managerial roles. The sold-out show floor covered a record 123,600 net sq. ft. of exhibit space taken by more than 385 exhibitors. Leading manufacturers and suppliers showcased their latest products and technologies for the aggregates, asphalt, pavement maintenance and traffic safety industry sectors. Education is a cornerstone of the shows and attendees purchased a record 8,400-plus tickets for the shows’ education programs, including the AGG1 Academy and People, Plants and Paving Training Program. “Savvy industry professionals realize the importance of keeping up to date with industry best practices if they want their businesses to stay on top; they know AGG1 and World of Asphalt education programs are industry-developed and presented,” Prausa said. Industry support amplifies the shows’ networking and knowledge-sharing. The co-located groups and meetings included Association of Modified Asphalt Producers, Oklahoma Asphalt Pavement Association, Rubber

Mack Provides 12 Pinnacle Models for TMCSuperTech ’12 Recognizing the need to cultivate highly skilled truck technicians, Mack Trucks, in cooperation with two customers, provided 12 Mack Pinnacle DayCab models for the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) National Technician Skills Competition — TMCSuperTech 2012. Christopher Barnett of Ryder Systems Inc. in Hebron, Ky., won the eighth annual competition, in which trucking technicians from the United States and Canada are recognized for superior skill and professionalism. Many TMCSuperTech contenders won the right to compete by first winning state or company-level contests, and most work for service providers or major fleets. “It was an honor for Mack Trucks to have the top truck technicians in North America working on our trucks during the competition,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “We are committed to fostering excellence among truck technicians and congratulate the TMCSuperTech winners for being the best in the industry.” Just 114 technicians qualified to compete in the hands-on portion of the competition, testing their skills in 17 categories such as HVAC, drivetrain and brake repair. Awards

for the event were presented to the winners of the individual skills contests, as well as to the top three overall finishers. According to TMC, as the grand champion, Barnett is considered the most highly skilled truck technician in North America and won a trip to the 2013 Daytona 500. Second-place finisher John Ragland from FedEx Express, Kansas City, Mo., won a trip to the 2013 Brickyard 400, and third-place finisher Christopher Tate of Mohawk Truck Inc., West Seneca, N.Y., received a battery/electrical system tester. The 12 Mack Pinnacle models were used for the HVAC and brake repair competitions. PITT OHIO and UPS, two Mack customers, provided the trucks. TransEdge Truck Centers, a Pittsburgh-based Mack dealer and Mack’s 2011 North American Dealer of the Year, detailed the trucks in preparation for the event and transported them to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. For more information, visit www.macktrucks.com. Trees, Tons of Dirt Smash Into Homes, Wipe Out Road LANDSLIDE from page 1

involved with landslides,” said John Starcevich, Malcolm Drilling project manager. The firm, which employs highly trained crews and expensive and sophisticated equipment, takes safety seriously and before crews are sent to work on a job, thorough inspections of the site and its suitability for construction are researched by geologists and geotechnical engineers. Before any project is approved, municipal officials in Washington State require thorough geotechnical investigations and reports, which include slope stability analysis and soil studies. Starcevich said that following a landslide and before any work can be done, a careful evaluation of the site is made.

Geotechnical engineers study the conditions at the site, including surface drainage, the types of soil and state of the soil layers, geological features and recent seismic activity as potential causes. “Often marginally stable slopes are weakened by development if the surface drainage isn’t properly controlled,” he said. “It can saturate the soils, weaken them and exploit natural weaknesses in the soil structure itself.” Geologists from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources were still examining the site to determine the causes behind the landslide as of press time. ABC’s Seattle affiliate, KOMO, reported that the “landslide stretched across 400 to 500 yards and the earth dropped 600 to 700 yards down to the water, with trees and tons of

On March 27, a huge landslide along the coastline of Whidbey Island (north of Seattle) caused a massive slice of land near Coupeville to collapse and with it one home. It also forced the evacuation of 34 others.

dirt smashing into homes down below and wiping out a road.” Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue Chief Ed Hartin told ABCNEWS.com “landslides are not a totally uncommon event on the island,” and that the geology of the island is “a constant slow moving active landslide.” It is only after the governing municipality or organization and their consultants have determined the appropriate solution that remedial work can begin. Typically plans and specifications are prepared before the firm can begin operations such as stabilization, soil improvement, de-watering and other preparation work. Remedial work following a landslide includes removing loose surficial soils to reach competent soils where benches are cut and drill rigs are brought in to install soil reinforcing elements, which can take many different forms.Vertical drills may be used to install vertical shafts or soldier piles and other vertical reinforcement and smaller crawler-mounted drills that articulate are used to install horizontal or inclined soil nails, ground anchors and tie-back anchors. Control of both surface and subsurface drainage also is very important to stabilize. “They are quite versatile,” said Starcevich, whose firm uses German manufactured Bauer vertical drills, Davey Drills manufactured by Davey Kent Inc. in Kent, Ohio, and also from Germany, Klemm drills by KLEMM Bohrtechnik . Starcevich had only seen pictures and video footage of the Whidbey landslide and like many, was awaiting more information on the causes that will be determined by examining the debris and the soil configuration. “I could imagine that if the landslide is large enough, much of the landslide mass may stay where it is,” he said. “It’s come to rest and it’s worked itself into a more stable configuration in areas, but there are obviously some large vertical faces that pose some potential problems. Quite often those vertical faces are protected and anchored prior to placing fill in front of them . They’ll put tie-back anchors or some type of reinforcing elements in it and then potentially put a facing on it such as shotcrete the face. They may need something even more significant and have to combine it with vertical reinforcing elements too.” Remedial operations can be expensive as earth retention systems in general “tend to be expensive because they involve a lot of time and effort to install under relatively difficult conditions,” he added. “It becomes a trade off. You ask where the other potential faults or failure surfaces are and it’s a question of economics — do you try to arrest further movement to save those homes and then, what is the cost of moving them or abandoning and demolishing them. When you try to arrest large scale slope instability, you may have to move a lot of earth.” When working on landslide remediation, Malcolm Drilling often works closely with excavating firms with similar experience, with safety the prime concern which includes both corporate and local office safety inspectors, to ensure that Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act regulations are adhered to. In addition to the eyes and ears of inspectors and crews, landslide remediation projects, require that the general contactor employ a monitoring program with some combination of surveyed monitoring points and/or installing slope inclinometers, specialized PVC casing installed in boreholes in see LANDSLIDE page 30

the soil, and an inclinometer, monitoring instrument is used to map the inclinometer casing in the borehole from bottom-to-top to determine if any soil movement has occurred. These systems are installed prior to any remedial work. “You have to come up with a viable monitoring plan that is reviewed and approved,” said Starcevich. For new construction projects that are “green lighted’ by municipalities, Malcolm Drilling teams take nothing for granted. “There is always the potential for unexpected things to occur and we try to look for potential problems and things that might occur,” said Starcevich. “Sometimes we’ll look at a job and say “we’re not comfortable with the potential risk there and we will not bid on a project.” Anderson’s Approach Based in Seattle, the Andersen Construction Company Inc. (ACC) was founded 62 years ago and specializes in commercial construction, and the construction and renovation of hospital and health care facilities. Steve Paul, the company’s general superintendent of the State of Washington, further explained that the process of approving a site for construction. A soils report needs to be prepared by a geotechnical engineering firm that is based on a survey of the property; use of existing topographical surveys; historical record searches to determine previous use of the site such as a gas station, location of a storage tank, or industrial activity; and if unconsolidated materials were placed on top of the existing native ground. Based on that report, ACC “looks at the bearing capacities of the soil, how stable it is — there is a standard recommendation in a geotechnical report — and we’ll see what we need to do for slope stability and during wet weather,” said Paul. “If it is a deep excavation next to an adjacent building, we’ll engage a shoring engineer to design shoring system to support that building or adjacent hillside. You cannot disturb a neighbors’ property when you are digging your own so that nothing you do causes any settlement or vibration-related damage to buildings.” Groundwater is a major consideration and factor that must be accounted for. A soils report will provide data on groundwater and the influence of moisture and rain. Creating de-watering wells is a common solution. Paul noted that many construction companies, due to the nature of their work, have considerable knowledge of soil types and conditions and how they react to wet weath-

er. In addition to a variety of mitigation measures, dealing with contaminated material (such as petroleum saturated material) is very much a constant and construction companies are required to have a plan that not only identifies and handles them, but properly disposes of them safely and legally at department of transportation and department of environment regulated disposal facilities. “There is tons of homework that goes into an excavation project and one of the things that we plan for is not to put people in harms’ way,” said Paul, whose company subcontracts these scopes of work to excavation companies and before any crews begin work on a site, sends in safety and management teams to study a site based on the geotechnical report. “You plan the safety of your workers first and an evacuation plan. Large or small, most projects have some element of earthwork and the same principles come into play.” The soils report is essential for ACC crews and subcontractors because it lets them develop a plan for how many vehicles and heavy pieces of equipment can be brought onto vulnerable portions of the site at any one time and this includes temporary surcharge loads (TSL) on existing slopes of shored excavations. “It could be anything from the weight of a crane, excavator, concrete trucks or even the weight of a vehicle working next to an excavation,” said Paul. “A lot of times, if they are major loads, they are going to be engineered. If they are minor loads, the shoring engineer will provide general parameters and we will know whether or not for example we know they we can run trucks up to 10,000 to 20,000 pounds within 50 feet up to the edge of an excavation without a problem. If those loads exceed the general guidelines provided then we are going to need additional shoring.” Extra shoring may also be required to support bringing heavy equipment up the edge to remove soil and the shoring design needs to take into unexpected loads that can occur in a concentrated area. The city of Seattle has identified critical areas where hillsides and slopes, if they are above 45 to 50 percent in grade, require in-depth soil studies and construction plans. “Whatever building you are going to put up,” said Paul, “the recommendations from the geotechnical studies have to be incorporated into the plan.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Direct Disposal Doubles Productivity With Hyundai Loader In 1989, when the California State Assembly passed Bill 939 mandating that 50 percent of all municipalities’ waste be diverted from sanitary landfills, waste industry veteran Dan Agajanian saw both a business opportunity and an environmental responsibility. It was the passing of this new bill that lead Agajanian to take action by adding a construction and demolition (C&D) recycling facility to his existing waste hauling company in East Los Angeles. Since its establishment in 2003, Agajanian and his staff at Direct Disposal have made it their mission to provide their southern California community with an eco-friendly, cost-effective solution to avoiding landfills. “Recycling has come a long way in California in recent years,” said Agajanian. “Unlike many other facilities, more than 75 percent of all C&D waste delivered to Direct Disposal is turned into reusable commodities. Our current recycling rate meets the State of California’s guidelines and goals for

the year 2020, something we take great pride in as a company.” One of only a handful of businesses to take this initiative, Direct Disposal is permitted to accept up to 174 tons of C&D waste daily including materials such as steel, metal, aluminum, copper, wiring, plastics, wood waste, dry wall, clean dirt, clean asphalt, clean concrete, mixed inert, tires and roofing material. The company accepts waste in various ways including customer drop offs and through the company’s rental and hauling service of roll off containers. Once the waste is received at the facility it is “processed” or sorted and separated into piles by type before being loaded into trucks and taken to other facilities for grinding, melt down and/or reuse in various forms. To manage this expansive undertaking, Agajanian relies heavily on his equipment. “We move 200-300 tons of material around our facility on a daily basis,” he said. see AGAJANIAN page 38

Dan Agajanian was immediately impressed by the high-quality build and standard features the machine had to offer, not to mention, the competitive price.

BP 2050, BP 3050...

Atlas Copco Adds Two Bulk Pulverizers to Silent Line Atlas Copco has added two models of bulk pulverizers, the BP 2050 and BP 3050, to its range of silent demolition tools. Key design features include a specially angled shape and wide jaw for improved access to material and a speed valve for a more rapid open and close cycle. “The speed valve actually helps lower the overall cost of ownership,” said Keith Becker, product development specialist of Atlas Copco hydraulic attachments. “If you reduce your opening and closing time, or cycle time, you’re reducing machine hours, operator hours and fuel consumption while increasing production.” “Another feature that cuts down your time on the job and saves money is the high, constant power that these units generate at the jaw tips, even when they’re almost closed,” added Becker. “That extra power means you can use fewer bites to demolish a structure, for example. Every bite adds up. ” The wide jaw not only makes it easier to feed in

material, it also aids in the clean separation of rebar and concrete. The large jaw dimensions enable a high production output as well. Each model comes with a replaceable tooth-plate and cutting blades on the jaw which results in less down time in the field. Common applications for the new bulk pulverizers include secondary reduction and separation, secondary demolition of reinforced concrete structures and separation of concrete and rebar. When equipped with the optional 360-degree hydraulic rotation device (BP 2050 R and BP 3050 R) the units can be used for efficient primary demolition of ceilings and walls. The Atlas Copco bulk pulverizers are available for carriers in the 18- to 35-ton classes. For more information, call 800/7326762 or visit www.atlascopco.us.

HL740-9 Impresses Agajanian With High Quality Build AGAJANIAN from page 31

“Without the proper equipment in place, it is nearly impossible to keep up the necessary pace.” To assist in managing the incoming and outgoing waste at such a high rate, Agajanian decided it was only necessary to add a new piece of equipment to his fleet. It was then he connected with George Davis, sales manager of Heavy Equipment Sales, a Hyundai Construction Equipment dealership with two locations in Corona and Pacoima, Calif. Upon understanding the needs of Direct Disposal, Davis recommended a HL740-9 Hyundai wheel loader for the job. Agajanian was immediately impressed by the high-quality build and standard features the machine had to offer, not to mention, the competitive price. In November 2012, Agajanian purchased the Hyundai loader and has continued to be impressed by its performance and productivity ever since. “Before this purchase, we were bursting at the seams and having a challenging time doing our daily tasks with our old equipment,” said Agajanian. “Since we started working with the Hyundai loader our productivity has doubled and in a crucial industry like recycling, that speaks volumes.” Direct Disposal uses the loader in multiple applications, but primarily for sorting and separating waste into piles and loading the waste onto the vast amount of trucks entering the yard to be taken to other recycling facilities. According to Agajanian, the machine

The machine loads approximately 80-100 tons (73-91 t) of waste onto 3-4 large, high-sided trucks per day and works a consistent 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week.

loads approximately 80-100 tons (73-91 t) of waste onto 3-4 large, high-sided trucks per day and works a consistent 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week. Of the many features, the HL740-9 has to offer, Agajanian has found the three engine mode selections, economy mode for light duty work, standard mode for general work and power mode for heavy duty work to be one of the most beneficial. This feature is designed to allow the operator to customize the machine’s engine

power in order to increase productivity and reduce fuel consumption, which Agajanian has seen first-hand. Direct Disposal has saved 100 gallons of fuel per month since purchasing the Hyundai loader and with the cost of off-road diesel at around four dollars per gallon the company will be saving approximately $4,800 per year. Direct Disposal has also found the advanced 5 ft. 7 in. (1.5 m 18 cm) wide color LCD screen and Hi-mate Remote Management System to be critical tools,

Direct Disposal has been able to increase its total tonnage of waste moved, as well as their cycle times, by 50 percent.

especially when used in conjunction. The loader’s color monitor features an integrated load weight system which allows operators to view the bucket’s current load-capacity to prevent over and under loading, which contributes to work efficiency. This data along with many other types of diagnostic data is stored and can be accessed through the Hi-mate Remote Management System from anywhere with internet access. Agajanian accesses this crucial information approximately once per week through a daily reporting function and monitors the machine’s total cycles and daily tonnage moved in and out of the facility per day. With these tools combined, Direct Disposal has been able to increase their total tonnage of waste moved, as well as their cycle times, by 50 percent. Enabling the Hyundai HL740-9 loader’s power and productivity is its reliable, fuelefficient, 143 HP, Cummins, Tier-III QSB6.7 engine. The machine has an operating weight of 26,460 lbs. (12,002 kg), a bucket capacity of 3 cu. yds. (2.3 m) and a bucket breakout force of 24,800 lbs. (11,249 kg), all of which allow for the moving heavy waste materials. “We have had numerous different types and brands of machines over the years, but with the Hyundai loader there is no comparison,” said Agajanian. Direct Disposal is an environmentallyminded company providing the East Los Angeles area with efficient, cost-effective waste management alternatives to landfills for over 10 years. Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc. offers quality earthmoving and material-handling equipment, including hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, skid steer loaders and electric and diesel forklifts. They also manufacture internal combustion cushion and internal combustion pneumatic forklifts. Hyundai’s North American headquarters in Norcross, GA, along with its Elk Grove location outside Chicago, gives the company two strategically located parts depots for quick fulfillment of dealer and customer orders. Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Hyundai Construction Equipment’s parent company has instilled its philosophy: Quality before and after the sale throughout all divisions. HHI invests heavily in construction equipment R&D and builds stateof-the-art production facilities around the world. Hyundai is ISO 9001 certified and is a perennial winner of numerous Korean construction-equipment design awards.
