Students in the Del. E Webb School of Construction at Arizona State University in Tempe have a rare opportunity to participate in building their own facility. Just north of the campus, Tempe-based Okland Construction Co. Inc. is overseeing construction of a five-story, 137,000 sq. ft. mixed-use building that will house the Del Webb School and a retail and food service component known as the Sun Devil Marketplace, plus a 200seat auditorium for use during campus tours. The “one-off” marketplace on

the first and second floors features more than just books; it will include highend finishes. About six interns have had the opportunity for hands-on participation, but the entire project will continue to be used as a teaching tool, said Tim Goyette, senior project manager of Okland. “Elements of the construction were modeled in 3-D, so students can look inside the walls and ceilings to see how the building was constructed. The idea behind it is to let the model live on into the future.” All the superintendents and team members are ASU graduates, he added. “The building is a didac-

tic tool,” said Art Lara, project manager, ASU. “Many spaces are left exposed so students can see the guts, or spline — the systems used to build the mechanical, structural and electrical systems. It will be

used as part of class instruction.” Expansion The reason for the expansion of ASU’s campus is increased enrollment, growth in the Del

Webb programs and the need for a “campus front door,” according to Lara. “Enrollment has been going up for 30 years, but in the last 10, it’s grown by 20,000 students,” he said. see BRIDGE page 24

Stag Bucket Offers Staggered Tooth Penetration Bucket Leading Edge Attachments Inc. now offers a newer version of the “STAG” bucket, which is a new style, high penetration bucket utilizing the “Staggered Tooth” technology, and is designed for excavators allowing the operator to easily dig compacted soils, coral, shale, caliche, stratified materials, shot rock or frozen ground with higher concentrated breakout force for a price that is lower than the multi-ripper bucket. The STAG bucket design allows the operator to focus the excavator’s full breakout force on one tooth at a time because the front leading edge is stepped and angled. This new version positions the first tooth closer to the center of the bucket, each successive tooth alternating back and forth so that each tooth hits the material sequentially. This staggered effect focuses

The LEA STAG bucket creates high penetration due to the fact that one tooth is engaging at a time thus saving energy and increasing performance, while still being able to shave the bottom of a trench flat similar to a conventional bucket.

ACE Attachments Unveils Edge Sod Unroller for Skid Steers, Track Loaders ACEAttachments Inc., a global supplier of attachments and accessories for compact equipment, has a re-designed Edge sod unroller attachment for skid steers and track loaders. The Edge sod unroller attachment has an enhanced, more cost-effective design that provides for more efficient operation and performance, saving landscape professionals time and money in labor, according to the manufacturer.

It features an improved bracket design, providing easier roll installation and more effective operation and will lay rolls of sod in forward or reverse motion. Tubular frames handle rolls of sod up to 48 in. (122 cm) wide and up to 60 in. (152 cm) in diameter. It requires no hydraulics and uses fiber or plastic cored rolls of sod. For more information, call 866/2328224 or visit www.ceattachments.com.

the bucket breakout force on one tooth at a time. Creating flat trench bottoms is easy with this new bucket also because the teeth are on the same plane, similar to a conventional bucket. Conventional buckets have the teeth mounted on an edge so that all of the teeth engage the material at the same time thus sharing the load and decreasing the tooth breakout force. The LEA STAG bucket creates high penetration due to the fact that one tooth is engaging at a time thus saving energy and increasing performance, while still being able to shave the bottom of a trench flat similar to a conventional bucket. The new STAG bucket is manufactured in the United States using T1 alloy steel. Angled edge configurations are available that have one of the corner teeth penetrating first, but the teeth are still staggered. Available for any excavator from 11,000 to 220,000 lbs., the multi-ripper teeth also are available for some models, to provide even more penetration. University Gives Interns Hands-on Experience, Uses Job as Teaching Tool ASU from page 1

The tight, 18-month schedule is fast-tracked to allow ASU to occupy the new building in July to prepare for classes, which start in August.

Just north of the campus, Tempe-based Okland Construction Co. Inc. is overseeing construction of a five-story, 137,000 sq. ft. mixed-use building that will house the Del Webb School and a retail and food service component known as the Sun Devil Marketplace, plus a 200-seat auditorium for use during campus tours.

Crews are currently in the finishing stages: hanging and texturizing drywall; painting, grinding floors, hanging doors and measuring millwork.

ASU enrollment is at 62,000 students in Tempe, or more than 76,000 in total. Consequently, there’s a premium on space, he said. But ASU isn’t merely growing; it’s reaching out to the city. “One of the goals of the university is to become more embedded in the city, to integrate with the community,” Lara said. The building is a joint effort with the city of Tempe in permitting and construction, Goyette said. “The first two floors — the Sun Devil marketplace and the retail component — are in Tempe’s jurisdiction for permitting; the rest of the building went through the normal permitting process and review.” The multi-purpose building has space that can be used for a variety of events. Predominantly, it will be used as a “high-profile space to welcome people to ASU,” Lara said. “The student tours program needed a new space. They wanted a high-profile space.” The Del Webb program, which was situated in several spaces in multiple buildings, needed a consolidated location. Both problems will be solved with the new building. “This building is driven by the construction school, tours and the Sun Devil Marketplace,” said Lara. According to the Phoenix Business Journal, Tempe’s Mayor Mark Mitchell considers the project the first of “many new steps between a partnership with the city of Tempe and Arizona State.” Future steps include adding more buildings to the plot of land on College Ave. known as Block 12. “As the development of this area continues, ASU plans to make part of College Ave. closed off to vehicles for concerts and other events.” Schooled in Construction The $54.5 million total cost comes from three sources: bonds, special bonds (lottery revenue that allows the university to build projects for less by providing only 20 percent of the cost, with the remaining 80 percent from the state lottery) and $20 million in gifts and local funds. Construction began in February

About six interns have had the opportunity for hands-on participation, but the entire project will continue to be used as a teaching tool, said Tim Goyette, senior project manager of Okland.

2013, and is expected to be complete by May 2014. The 18-month schedule is fast-tracked to allow ASU to occupy the new building in July to prepare for classes, which start in August. It’s a tight schedule for this type of building, said Goyette: a complex, multi-tenant structure with a labyrinth of conduit. Fortunately, Arizona poses few weather-related delays. “The architect designed it for multiple front doors,” Goyette continued. The auditorium looks like a separate space, so does the market place. The construction school on the top three floors has a large, cascading exterior stairway. Each area has a separate identity, Lara added. No student has to meander through one area to reach a different destination. More importantly, he views the design as a “new front door to the campus” intended to positively influence prospective students as they make their decision about which college to attend. Intended to impress, the main building is a concrete structure, with an “appendage” that pops out on the north — the tours building, a steel building with a composite concrete top. “The types of construction are diverse,” Goyette said, “and use a multitude of material types and systems.” Materials used include: • Concrete — 11,532 cu. yds. (8,817 cu m) “Suntech built a unique frame,” Goyette said. “A blend of post-tension and mildly reinforced structural system.” Post-tension was incorporated in the shorter-dimension areas; mildly rein-

forced with rebar was used for flexibility in future expansion because holes can be drilled in it. Okland self-performed all architectural concrete to allow for better quality control, while still taking advantage of subcontractor pricing on the concrete frame. • Rebar and post-tension cables — 680 tons (617 t) • Composite metal decking — 13,000 sq. ft. (1,208 sq m) • Cold-formed structural steel — 370 tons (335.6 t) • Building skin components — 15,000 sq. ft. (1,393 sq m) • Arizona sandstone with a milled finish for a terra cotta look, and a cleft finish for a rough, just-cut look, mixed on lower two story veneer • Aluminum metal panels — 61,000 sq. ft. (5,667 sq m) — to avoid rust, for longer life: this is a 50-year building • Exterior glazing system — 25,000 sq. ft. (2,322 sq m) • Façade for shade, 8 ft. (2.4 m) off the building: 10,000 sq. ft. (929 sq m). The south elevation is double-skinned. Spray foam was used in the interior cavity for a vapor barrier and added R value. “It’s not done a lot in Arizona,” Goyette said. Because ASU was required to bid out the work, he said it was hard to get contractors to spray the interior wall cavities. In the end, ASU negotiated the spray foam into Kovach’s contract. They’re targeting LEED Gold status on the project, Goyette said. “ASU is on the cutting-edge of sustainability, with lots of solar power and other sustainable projects.” see ASU page 32

Two models are available for an ideal fit to any application. The 5 to 14 cu. yd. (3.8 to 10.7 cu m) capacity Sidewinder dump body is able to spread sand or salt up to 25 ft. (7.6 m), the width of two full traffic lanes, with continuous feed from the dump body. The unit features COR-TEN steel, a heavy-duty box braced tailgate, full depth corner posts with additional support added to the right rear post and continuous 100 percent welding on the body. The body sidewall is shaped into a continuous top rail, side and running board configuration, eliminating the outside seam weld below the top rail, preventing moisture and freeze problems.

Bendix ADB22X…

The Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes have a two-pin floating caliper design that provides a more stringent overall dimension accuracy and consistent force distribution.

Kenworth Standardizes Front Brakes Kenworth Truck Company will make Bendix ADB22X front air disc brakes standard on Kenworth Class 8 tractors and trucks. The Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes have a two-pin floating caliper design that provides a more stringent overall dimension accuracy and consistent force distribution. According to Bendix, the ADB22X design also significantly reduces brake fade with no degradation of stopping power. Bendix recently marked the production of its 500,000th ADB22X air disc brake. “We’ve offered Bendix air disc brakes as an option on our Class 8 trucks previously. Customers appreciate their superior performance, carlike feel, ease of maintenance, and light weight design, while they also exceed the federal government’s RSD [reduced stopping distance] requirements,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. “These benefits are so compelling that Kenworth decided to make air disc brakes standard on Kenworth Class 8 trucks. For additional weight savings, the air disc brakes also come standard with an aluminum hub and splined disc rotor assembly.” For more information, visit www.foundationbrakes.com or www.kenworth.com. Debbie Stabenow...

U.S. Senator Accepts Green Truck Leadership Award NTEA — The Association for the Work Truck Industry, awarded U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow the Green Truck Leadership Award for her contributions in promoting advanced alternative fuels and technologies for work trucks. Stabenow is the sponsor of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act (AVTA) of 2013, which directs the Secretary of Energy (DOE) to work toward substantially reducing or eliminating petroleum use by and emissions from passenger and commercial vehicles. She currently chairs the Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure and has represented the state of Michigan in the U.S. Senate since being elected in 2000. Stabenow was introduced by inaugural Green Truck Leadership Award winner U.S. Rep. Gary Peters of Michigan. NTEA President Shawn Jacobs, president and CEO of STS Trailer & Truck Equipment (Syracuse, N.Y.) said, "Senator Stabenow is

a true leader in the effort to support both alternative fuels and advanced technologies in work trucks." “The Advanced Vehicle Technology Act not only highlights trucks, it also recognizes the differences between vocational and longhaul trucks,” said NTEA Executive Director Steve Carey. “We appreciate Senator Stabenow and her efforts to help the work truck industry improve both our environmental impact and our businesses’ bottom lines.” Stabenow’s efforts were bolstered by President Obama’s late February announcement of a timeline for the second round of fuel efficiency regulations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and his call to partner with the private sector to deploy advanced vehicles. A sustainable design feature being added that meets the new energy code is the application of Thermax insulation from Dow Corning installed on the outside of the studs/frame. Roll All Goyette carefully tracks all materials, approvals and sources. “A lot of manufacturers don’t have stuff on the shelf,” Goyette said. Materials are often manufactured just for a specific project, which adds to the lead time. Using a six to eight week lookahead helps plan in advance, he continued. Most contractors use only a two to three week lookahead, but he and Lara believe it doesn’t leave enough time to order materials. “By the time you get materials, you’re already in week two,” Lara said. Working so far ahead expedites material delivery. “You have to be able to feed the monster,” said Goyette. As the Construction Manager at Risk, Okland is responsible for managing the many sub-contractors who play a significant role on the project. Goyette said Okland does all scheduling onsite, using its own proprietary system and P6 Primavera. “Every superintendent is trained in P6 Primavera, and updates and builds their schedule. Our onsite teams own it.” Sub-contractors include: • TDI Industries — All the superintendents and team members are ASU graduates. mechanical and plumbing • Kearney Electric — • Beecroft — utility excavator footings, filled with lean concrete electrical and IT infrastructure between reinforced footings. It cabling “They’ve done a lot of Equipped for the Job saved time and money because it work at ASU,” Goyette said. Typical equipment on the job required less prep time. • Kovach — metal skin and site includes a tower crane for the “We did 30 spot footings,” glazing — “One contractor doing concrete frame and roller track Goyette said. the entire building envelope means cranes for other work. Crews can drill only 6 to 10 a day. “ASU owns the property, but • Progressive Roofing —roofing Okland used conventional Tempe has the right of way for the • Suntech — concrete spread footings and continuous streets,” Goyette said.

The $54.5 million total cost comes from three sources: bonds, special bonds (lottery revenue that allows the university to build projects for less by providing only 20 percent of the cost, with the remaining 80 percent from the state lottery) and $20 million in gifts and local funds.

Cooling is a primary issue in Arizona. ASU has a central plant for chilled water, but Okland had to determine if it was cheaper to build another plant on the new site or run chilled water pipes from ASU — and the decision had to be made early in the project. They determined that there was a very long, if any, payback with an onsite plant. However, the 15-year payback to connect to the ASU central plant carried a huge risk. “We had to determine if it was worth it to run ½ mile of 18-in. steel piping through century-old infrastructure and city right-ofway,” Goyette recalled. As they did with the building, they modeled the system in 3-D, planning the routing vertically and horizontally as it would integrate into the utilities. The more they studied the routing, the more they were able to minimize the risk. Work was scheduled to take place between semesters — late July/mid-August. In May they were informed that they needed to sleeve the piping across the city’s ROW. “It was a surprise,” Goyette said — an expensive surprise, costing

$25,000 and adding complications. Now the trench would need to be wider (3-4’) and sloped, per the city’s request. The city agreed to close the road for two weeks, but all the work had to be done in that time frame, reducing the schedule for the street crossing phase by five weeks. Crews trenched in 20 ft. (6.1 m) increments as work progressed. In a small onsite staging area, crews welded 120 ft. (36.6 m) of pipe together, X-raying the welds as a safety precaution. “We used special rigging to hoist the 120-foot pipe to keep it from flexing,” Goyette said. “They picked it with the crane and placed the whole pipe in one piece.” That milestone behind them, he said they are currently in the finishing stages: hanging and texturizing drywall; painting, grinding floors, hanging doors and measuring millwork. With the project on schedule, students should enjoy the new facility in August. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

IROCK Introduces Versatile TC-20 Track Impact Crusher The TC-20 track impact crusher from IROCK Crushers combines a larger feeder, a high-performance four-bar impactor and heavy-duty components for enhanced efficiency, reliability and precision. The TC-20 produces a uniform, cubical product, and IROCK’s hydraulically adjustable aprons provide better control over sizing. The unit has the versatility to process soft to medium rock, recycled concrete and recycled asphalt, according to the manufacturer. The rotor measures 40 by 56 in. (101.6 by 142 cm) and can process a variety of materials up to 24 in. (61 cm) in diameter. A 440-hp Caterpillar C-13 ACERT Tier III engine powers the crusher, which can process up to 500 tph (453.6 t). The track crusher features a fixed, Hardox hopper with a 15-cu.-yd. (11.5 cu m) capacity. It is paired with a 52 in. by 16-ft. (132 cm by 4.8 m) vibrating grizzly feeder, which has ¾ in. (1.9 cm) liners on the pan and side walls. The feeder is up to 3 ft. (.9 m) longer than comparable units, making it possible to feed material with a large wheel loader. The TC-20 features a standard crusher bypass chute to reduce unnecessary wear on the crusher. With this chute, fines that fall through the grizzly feeder can either bypass the crusher and mix back in with the crushed material or be removed via the dirt conveyor with a simple adjustment to the flop gate. The TC-20 also incorporates IROCK’s rock box, an alternative to discharge chutes found on similar units. The rock box uses a shelf system with abrasion resistant wear bars that allow crushed material to build up and act as a wear liner, which cuts down on costly labor and wear parts. The 48-in. (122 cm) wide discharge conveyor can stockpile from as high as 10 ft. 11 in. (3.3 m). Operators can hydraulically lower or raise the conveyor to adjust drop heights and make maintenance easier. The TC-20 is highly portable, with 20-in. (51 cm) track pads for easy maneuverability around a job site or onto a trailer for transportation to other locations. The unit comes standard with a wireless remote control for full plant operation, with two tracking speeds as standard. To reduce cleaning and for dust control, the TC-20 features a standard dust-suppression system. Catwalks provide convenient access to crucial maintenance and cleaning points. For more information, 866/240-0201 or visit www.irockcrushers.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Keeping Stump Grinders in Shape By Stephen Kingsley SPECIAL TO CEG

Bradco stump grinder, this check can be performed by removing the access cover from the front of the frame and then removing the pipe plug from the end of the gearbox. The lubricant should be at the same level as the plug. If the lubricant level is low, fill it with 80 to 90 weight gear lubricant. Do not overfill. Too much lubricant might rupture the gearbox seals.”

A stump grinder can be a powerful attachment tool when mounted on a skid steer loader, but only when it is kept in peak running condition. The stump grinder is a simple cutting device with a round, steel wheel with perforations holding a set of carbide cutters around the circumference of the wheel. These attachments are most Disc perforations assist with commonly used for landscaping chip discharge. construction and stump removal applications. The attachment is robust to handle tough, dirty jobs — and that kind of work can create problems for the machine if it is not properly maintained. First and foremost, keep safety in mind when performing any type of maintenance on the attachment. Make sure the stump grinder is lowered to the ground and the Carbide cutting teeth parking brake is set. Make in action. absolutely certain that the hydraulic circuit is in the off position, turn off the skid-steer engine and remove the key. If the stump grinder must remain in the raised position during maintenance, block the unit securely to prevent accidental release of the lifting mechanism. Finally, disconnect the hydraulic couplers as a backup safety measure. Proper Lubrication All maintenance begins with proper lubrication. Each moving part should be lubricated using a quality lubricant. “We recommend the use of SAE multi-purpose lubricant or equivalent SAE multi-purpose type grease,” said Dave Aldrich, product support and training representative of Paladin Attachments, manufacturer of the Bradco Stump Grinder attachment. “Neglecting proper lubrication can lead to reduced efficiency, increased wear, early breakdown, and the needless replacement of parts.” All parts with grease fittings should be lubricated on a daily basis or every 8 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Be sure to clean the grease fittings before using the grease gun so as not to inject dirt into the system. After greasing, wipe off any excess grease from the grease fittings. Dirt can collect on exposed excess grease, causing increased wear. If a grease fitting is missing, replace it immediately. The gearbox is critical to attachment longevity. The oil level in the gearbox should be checked at least once a week. This is a simple, but very important step. “For example,” said Aldrich, “on a

Maintenance Requirements Regular maintenance is the key to long life and safe operation. Most manufacturers have reduced maintenance requirements on the stump grinder to a minimum, but it is very important that they be performed correctly and in a timely manner. Before using the stump grinder each day, routinely look it over. Run your hand over the entire machine to make sure nothing is loose or broken. Make sure nothing that should be sharp is dull, and nothing that should be dull is sharp. If hydraulic fluid is leaking from a hose connection, tighten it or replace it. If a bearing needs greasing, grease it. If the bearings are over-greased, wipe them off. Check the brazed joints of the cutter head to make sure all the cutters are bolted on and meet the torque specs of the manufacturer. Make sure the cutters aren’t folded down or broken off. This check should be performed at least once a day; twice a day if possible. Hydraulic safety should be a key point in any maintenance program. A garden hose flows at approximately 5 to 10 gallons per minute. In comparison, the stump grinder has a flow rate of up to 40 gallons per minute in high-flow

units. That immense amount of pressure builds up in the hose and, if the hose breaks or is cut, it can be a life-threatening issue. The hydraulic fluid can escape the hose with enough pressure to lacerate the skin or sever an appendage. Maintenance Checklist The following items should be checked on a daily basis: • Check the skid-steer loader hydraulic system to ensure there is an adequate level of hydraulic oil. • Check the gearbox castle nut; make sure it is torqued to a minimum-250/maximum-350 foot pounds. (Every nut and bolt has an SAE torque rating. If undertorqued, the nut can become loose. If over-torqued, the pressure exerted can begin to pull down on and distort the threads on the nut and bolt, causing the nut to loosen.) • Check mounting hardware on teeth; torque to a minimum150/maximum-180 foot pounds. • Check all other hardware and tighten as necessary. • Check hydraulic system for leaks. • Check gearbox power shaft for foreign material around the shaft and remove it. (Any foreign material around the shaft can become an abrasive, which can amplify the wear of seals and shafts.) • Check teeth for damage and replace when necessary. (If the teeth are broken off or folded over, the performance of the stump grinder diminishes greatly, requiring the use of more time and more fuel to perform the task.) • Check that all safety guards and devices are installed correctly. (Without safety guards in place, the operator and those standing nearby are at risk of being hit by flying debris.) • Check for missing or illegible safety/warning decals. (There may be three different warning emblems on the attachment. One indicates the potential to hurt someone; a second indicates the potential for catastrophic injury; and the third indicates the potential to kill.) The operator’s manual is the best source of information for maintaining a stump grinder attachment, but common sense plays an important role as well. If something doesn’t look right or sound right, check it. It just makes good sense. For more information, visit www.paladinattachments.com. Operators and plant managers of aggregate, rock and mineral mines can learn about the physics of processing materials with vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers during a two-day course at CEMCO Inc. in Belen, N.M. “The goal for anyone in this industry is to reduce operating costs and improve the bottom line,” CEMCO President Neil Hise said. “We want to teach people how to do that with VSI crushers so they can be successful.” Hise and other company experts teach participants about the four types of VSI crushers and how each can affect production rates, product quality and profits in specific applications. They also learn about the physics of processing materials with VSI crushers and every aspect of production, from engineering to welding. The classes highlight topics that are relevant to operators and plant managers’ daily use of the machines. These include lessons on how to adjust the machines’ revolutionsper-minute settings for certain materials to achieve the best possible gradation and efficiency, as well as how to measure horsepower consumption and determine the appropriate levels for certain applications. Operators and plant managers also get tips on how to reduce wear costs and downtime, increase efficiency and boost profits, as well as learn about best practices for installation,

maintenance and safety. They’ll see how the units are assembled and how the internal components are balanced. As part of the course, students can test their own material in one of CEMCO’s fullsize test crushers. The full-size units deliver more accurate production rates than what can be achieved with smaller lab crushers used at other manufacturers’ facilities. Hise has been with the family-owned company since its inception in 1962. He has numerous U.S. patents on VSI-related technologies and is a member of several industry associations, including the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association and the National Association of Manufacturers. CEMCO offers the two-day course periodically based on demand. CEMCO Inc. has more than 50 years of experience in designing and manufacturing a full line of TURBO VSI crushers that provide solutions for a variety of recycling applications, including cement, glass, ceramic tile, drywall, brick, roofing tiles, copper slag and steel slag. CEMCO offers a number of portable and stationary crushing systems, including the patented Glass Gator glass crushers, which are easy to maintain and highly energy efficient. EquipmentOne Delivers Strong Customer Results in First Year Ritchie Bros. celebrated the one year anniversary of Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne, the secure online marketplace launched by the company in early 2013. In its first year, EquipmentOne welcomed 580,000 unique visitors to the site and sold equipment and materials for both large corporate customers and private sellers. Complementary to Ritchie Bros.' flagship unreserved auction business, EquipmentOne is an online marketplace for the sale of equipment and materials where buyers and sellers can negotiate, complete and settle their transactions in a safe and transparent environment. “Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne is unlike any other equipment marketplace — it offers sellers control of the selling price and process while providing buyers transparency and security across a broad selection of assets," said Bob Armstrong, chief strategic development officer of Ritchie Bros. "With EquipmentOne and our live unreserved public auctions, Ritchie Bros. is the only place you need to go to buy or sell used equipment or materials. We offer the world's builders a complete solution set to serve a wide variety of needs. If a seller wants control of price and process, EquipmentOne can help. Or, if the seller wants certainty of sale and global market value, they can use our unreserved auctions. Ultimately, it's all about meeting the needs of the customer.” Ritchie Bros. customer, Johannes Schulze Vohren, vice president and managing director of Wacker Neuson Corporation, a global manufacturer of light and compact construction equipment said, “The combination of EquipmentOne and the unreserved auction has assisted us in driving great results for our company. Having both solutions available to us to meet our varying needs has been a great benefit.” Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne was initially launched in early 2013 and had a full commercial launch in April. The Marketplace already has hundreds of thousands of qualified members around the world. Members can create personal watchlists, save searches, review market pricing with the Ritchie Bros. Orange Book, and make offers on listings. Membership to EquipmentOne is free. “We sold thousands of equipment items from a wide variety of industries on EquipmentOne in 2013,” said Chris Connell, president of EquipmentOne. “From our core industries of transportation, construction and energy, particularly strong categories included highway trucks and trailers, earth-moving equipment and tubular assets such as line pipe and OCTG for the energy sector.” One EquipmentOne member, Jesse Wheeler, vice president of Wheeler Truck Sales and Service in Kansas City, Mo.,

turned to EquipmentOne to sell his Mack DM 690S truck tractor after he had listed it on an online classified Web site for a few weeks and received no results. “We’ve bought and sold with Ritchie Bros. in the past, so we were confident there would be a good buying audience on EquipmentOne and that we would get a fair price out of it at the end of the day — we were right," said Wheeler. “It was a smooth process, from posting the ad, to finding a buyer, to receiving payment and paper work. We would be confident using EquipmentOne again to sell. It saves an awful lot of work on our end—being able to list an item on just one site and knowing that it will get a lot of attention from the kind of buyers we're looking for.” How EquipmentOne Works Sellers can create their own listings or work with Ritchie Bros to create listings including equipment photos, detailed asset information, and price parameters, which may include an asking price or a “Buy it Now” price for a typical listing period of two weeks. EquipmentOne promotes the seller's listing through its comprehensive marketing campaigns. Negotiations take place using the online negotiation engine. Buyers are able to make transparent offers for the seller’s consideration during the listing period. When the listing period concludes and the item is sold, EquipmentOne provides complete financial settlement services to ensure a safe and seamless transaction. Some site features include: • EquipmentOne Total Buyer Protection — ensures buyers are protected through an escrow process, seller experience ratings and facilitated dispute resolution • Ritchie Bros. Orange Book — provides valuable market information to help buyers and sellers assess equipment pricing • Online Negotiation Engine — provides complete transparency into the negotiation process • Biggest source of equipment listings on the web — EquipmentOne provides the most equipment listings anywhere on the web by including equipment being sold in Ritchie Bros. unreserved auctions, as well as equipment listed on other Web sites all across the internet. There are currently more than 3.6 million listings showing on EquipmentOne For more information, visit RitchieBros.com.
