The Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company (RLWCC) began Phase II of the Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT - $21.5 million) Logan 10th West/ SR-252 Reconstruction Project on Sept. 15, 2012 and is looking to complete the work this October. The work is being done on the outskirts of Logan City at an altitude of 4,600 ft. (1,402 m) in the Logan Valley. The first phase covered 1000 West from U.S. 89/91 to 200 North (SR 30), and from 1000 West to U.S. 91 (Main Street) on 2500 North, while the second phase — a construction manager/general contractor (CMGC) project — covers the area from 200 North (SR 30) to 2500 North, and from 1000 West to 600 West on 2500 North. Key aspects of Phase Two — 4 mi. (6.4 km) of road, includes: widening the road on 1000 West 200 North to 1400 North from two lanes to five lanes; widening 1400 North to 2500 North to three lanes with wide shoulders; intersection lane see LOGAN page 42

Employment...

Metro Areas See Industry Numbers Rise Construction employment increased in 158 out of 339 metropolitan areas between February 2012 and February 2013, declined in 132 and was stagnant in 49, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released April 9 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials noted that the industry’s long-awaited recovery could prove fleeting if public construction spending continues to decline and a reported immigration reform deal could undermine efforts to recruit skilled workers. “While construction employment continues to decline in many parts of the country, the number of communities experiencing gains continues to expand,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “But the twin threats of additional public sector construction cuts and a looming shortage of certain types of construction workers could hurt the industry just as it is beginning to recover.” see INCREASE page 63

Caterpillar recently announced several major new products added to its line, chief among them the new Cat 336E H hydraulic hybrid excavator. The press was given an advance sneak peek at the new machine at an event held at its

Peoria, Ill., headquarters. The unveiling comes after months of speculation about the new model. “Customer interest has been off the charts,” said Ken Gray, global product manager of large hydraulic excavators, Caterpillar’s excavation division. “They’re not only reaching out to Cat dealers to learn more about the 336E H, they are placing orders. In fact, we

received our first signed orders October 17, the day after the reveal.” The Cat 336E H, which on its surface looks similar to existing non-hybrid models, has been retooled under the hood based on three principles: Conserve, Optimize, Reuse. The Conserve option runs the engine at its optimum speed. Energy flow is controlled and see HYBRID page 62

Kirby-Smith Machinery Inc.’s 2012 Guild Awards banquet was conducted in March 2013 in Dallas, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and St. Louis. More than $15,000 in cash and awards was distributed during these events. Kirby-Smith yearly recognizes superior achievement for those that put in the long hours and meet the grueling demands of keeping equipment running and properly maintained. “A field technician is probably one of the most taxing positions mentally, emotionally, and physically in a heavy equipment dealership,” said George Denny, marketing and sales director. Glen Townsend, vice president and general manager of Kirby-Smith Machinery recognized the importance of motivated and well trained parts and service technicians early on in his 40-year career. “Equipment has gotten more complex than in the past. However, our customer demands for quick and efficient repair have not changed. We must have the best qualified technicians working on the products we represent,” Townsend said. In 2004, Kirby-Smith Machinery developed its own exclusive internal award program “The Guild Program”.”The goal of this program is to promote continuing education in service and parts and ultimately to provide customers with superior service. To be a member of “The Guild,” requires each participant to attend at least 40 hours of technical training each year and score 100 percent on quarterly exams. “I am proud of the individuals who are members of “The Guild” because this dedication demonstrates the importance they place on their work,” said Townsend.

NPK Acquires Holmes Manufacturing in Garfield Heights NPK Construction Equipment recently announced its acquisition of Holmes Manufacturing in Garfield Heights, Ohio. Holmes Manufacturing started in 1971 as a family-owned and operated business. Holmes is a machining company, which services many sectors of the industrial marketplace in northeast Ohio. Much of the work is short run, and Holmes has gained a strong reputation for providing quality products and quick delivery, according to the company. Most of the work it does goes into machine tools, injection molding machines, mining and construction equipment. Holmes has been a great partner of NPK for well over 20 years, according to NPK Construction Equipment President Dan Tyrrell. “We have worked together well in developing processes for machining many of the parts that are shipped out of NPK every day. We feel that the high quality product produced by Holmes is a perfect fit to the high quality standards of NPK. I am confident that the joining of our teams will make NPK more competitive in the market place with an even stronger tie to our machining operations,” said Tyrrell. Some of the products currently made for NPK by Holmes include hammer support blocks, hammer side plates, compactor frames, eccentrics, processor jaws, bushings, pins and bearing housings. Tyrrell said that NPK worldwide has a long term goal of increasing the local manufacturing and production in each local market. In keeping with this goal, NPK Construction began assembling small hammers in Ohio over a year ago. The acquisition of Holmes Manufacturing is another step toward manufacturing more products made and built in Ohio. With the two companies now combined, they maintain an employee roster of more than 100 employees within the state.

(L-R): NPK Construction Equipment President Dan Tyrrell welcomes Holmes Manufacturing’s Robert Gerhardstein and Doug Holmes to the company.

Founded in 1923, NPK is an international manufacturer of excavator attachments with manufacturing facilities in the United States, Japan and the Czech Republic . The company produces hydraulic hammers, vibratory plate compactors, concrete crushing processors as well as a multitude of specialty attachments. In 1985 NPK Construction Equipment Inc. was founded in Walton Hills, Ohio with only 8 employees. A swing frame for an NPK pedestal boom, shown above, is being milled.

Some of the products currently made for NPK by Holmes include hammer support blocks, hammer side plates, compactor frames, eccentrics, processor jaws, bushings, pins and bearing housings.

In 1989, a local fabrication facility was purchased in Wickliffe, Ohio, to undertake the manufacturing of heavy steel fabrications in the United States. For more than 20 years, the company has served the construction, demolition and related fields in North and South America through a network of thoroughly trained equipment dealers. All NPK attachments and other products including hydraulic hammers, compactors, processors and pedestal booms are designed, manufactured and supported by NPK. Holmes was located on Miles Road until 1980 and then moved to the current address in Garfield Heights.

Volvo CE Cuts Ribbon on $100M North American Expansion Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) cut the ribbon on its $100 million expansion program March 21 at its Shippensburg, Pa., facility. In addition to the official opening of a new headquarters building for the Americas, the event also marked the start of wheel loader production at the company’s North American base in Shippensburg. Joining Volvo CE President Pat Olney in the inauguration ceremony were United States Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Alan Walker and Swedish Ambassador to the United States Jonas Hafström, along with 1,000 employees and many other distinguished guests. The investment affirms the Volvo CE’s long-term confidence in the North American market and consolidates its North American operations onto one site. The opening of the new building also marks the successful relocation of the sales office from Asheville, N.C., to Shippensburg, Pa. “This should serve as a very clear signal that Volvo CE is committed to this market and in a better position than ever before to offer our customers products that are made by Americans, for Americans,” said Olney. “Longer term, building machines closer to our customers will have a positive impact for U.S.-based suppliers, who will gain more business; for customers, who will enjoy shorter lead times; and for Volvo CE, which will be less exposed to currency swings.”

As part of the same investment, Volvo CE also will open a world-class customer center in the area in the first quarter of 2014. And in the future, Olney said that production of Volvo articulated dump trucks and crawler excavators will occur in Shippensburg. New Headquarters The new Americas headquarters serves both the North and Latin American business of Volvo Construction Equipment. In addition, the site’s global technology center employs approximately 200 people and provides development expertise to the wider Volvo business. The Shippensburg facility has been producing construction equipment for nearly 40 years. Volvo CE acquired the business from Ingersoll Rand in April 2007. A $30 million, 200,000-sq.-ft. expansion was completed in June 2010 and included a new assembly hall and materials building. The

Volvo CE President Pat Olney spoke to guests and the 1,000 employees of the Shippensburg, Pa., facility just prior to the official ribbon cutting on March 21.

Speaking at a gathering of North American and international journalists, Volvo CE President Olney confirmed that, despite the prediction of a broadly flat market during 2013, Volvo CE still saw North America as a home market and an important one for the future. He outlined the importance of the company’s global investment strategy, one that has resulted in more than $600 see VOLVO page 38

Volvo CE uses the Emballage system at its parts warehouse in Shippensburg, Pa. Emballage allows for the standardization, flexibility, and productivity necessary for the cost-effective movement of parts throughout the supply chain, and ultimately to the point of use at the manufacturing plant.

Contractor Surmounts Downtown Demolition Challenges

Independence Excavating, Independence, Ohio, was one of the primary demolition contractors.

The first-of-its kind Cleveland Medical Mart (MMCC) with 12,200 tons (11,067 t) of steel and more than 24,000 steel beams make the largest project in downtown Cleveland, Ohio history. When completed in the fall of 2013, the $465 million facility will consist of a four-story aboveground medical mart as well as a 230,000 sq. ft. (21,368 sq m) underground convention center with 60,000 sq. ft. (5,574 sq m) of meeting rooms and a 32,000 sq. ft. (2,973 sq m) grand ballroom. Nearly 100 tenants, including health care providers, medical device manufacturers, health care educational institutions and health care technology companies have already signed up for space in the new MMCC. As managed by Merchandise Mart Properties Inc., Chicago, the project is working to gain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. MPPI has completed one of the largest LEED projects in the world at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. Five buildings were demolished last year to make room for the new 1 million sq. ft. facility. The five included a parking garage, Sportsman’s Restaurant, the Court Annex Building, the Chicago Title Building and the eight-story 113 Building, all in Cleveland’s central business district. Promptly at 6:00 a.m. on Jan. 3, 2011, crews fired up demolition

machines and began work. Demolition remained on schedule and was completed under an aggressive schedule, despite the wind, cold, snow and rain that a Cleveland winter and spring can bring. More than the five aboveground buildings needed to be

demolished. Much of the demolition took place down to 30 ft. (9 m) below grade at the old Cleveland Convention Center, Malls B and C, and Exhibit Halls C and D on Lakeside Avenue. “The Cleveland Convention Center was basically a gigantic concrete bathtub on top of which

was the Cleveland mall,” said Dave Johnson of MMCC. The first order of business was to scrape off the grass, dirt, sidewalks and trees that composed the top of the mall. When that was done, crews demolished within the building itself. They took down column after column and gutted

the building. Independence Excavating, Independence, Ohio, was one of the primary demolition contractors. “Our main function was the demolition of the existing convention center,” said Ed Wilk, general superintendent with Independence. “At one time we had some 25 to 27 major excavators down there and 40 to 50 workers. We had a subcontractor helping us on some of the demolition, like the 113 Building and the small parking garage and the Sportsman’s Restaurant. “There was some demolition done on the existing public auditorium,” Wilk said. “Part of that had to come down to make way for the new project. And then the convention center demo was probably minus 30 feet below finished grade,” he added. Richard Wilk, Ed’s son and Independence’s superintendent for the demolition, said the contractor employed several hammers for the huge demolition project. “We had a John Deere 450 with a hammer on it and we had a Hitachi 850 with an Allied hammer on it,” said Richard. “We had several Bobcats with hammers and two or three other excavators with hammers.” The Hitachi 850 was fitted with an Allied/Rammer Model 7013 hammer, a 16,000-ft.-lb.-class machine. The 7013 model is the largest hammer Allied sells, and it requires a carrier in the 132,000 to 220,500 lb. (59,874 to 100,017 kg) class. The next smaller hammer is see DEMOLITION page 64

McMillen 75 Series by Paladin Dig Holes With Minimal Damage to Area McMillen 75 Series augers by Paladin dig holes for utility, construction and landscaping applications with minimal damage to the surrounding area. The series includes a broad selection of models that attach to skid steers, backhoes, tractors, wheel loaders, excavators and telehandlers. McMillen 75 Series augers utilize a sealed planetary reduction auger drive to efficiently and safely dig holes through most dirt conditions. With auger diameters ranging from 4 to 36 in. (10 to 91 cm), operators have the flexibility to dig specific hole sizes that match each application. The heavy-duty, all gear design provides extended life with minimal maintenance and service, according to the manufacturer. All moving components are completely sealed and lubricated for maximum cooling and minimum wear during the job. McMillen 75 Series auger drives are bi-directional, allowing the operator to back out of an obstruction and quickly pull the auger drive from the hole. If immovable or hard objects are hit while digging, an internal hydraulic relief valve protects the unit and hydraulic system. This feature also allows these drives to perform at maximum capacity across a wider range of loaders. Each auger comes with a comprehensive 2-year warranty that includes the planetary drive. For more information, call 800/456-7100 or visit www.paladinattachments.com. With auger diameters ranging from 4 to 36 in. (10 to 91 cm), operators have the flexibility to dig specific hole sizes that match each application.

Loftness Introduces New Carbide Cutter G3 Attachment As part of its VMLogix line of products, Loftness introduced the Carbide Cutter G3 high-performance mulching head attachment for skid steers. This new generation product incorporates the latest cutting-tooth technologies and power drive systems, while maintaining the rugged reliability expected of Loftness equipment, according to the manufacturer. The Carbide Cutter G3 is available with 51-, 61- and 71-in. (129.5, 155 and 180 cm) cutting widths. All models are offered with a variety of carbide-tipped and heat-treated steel teeth to match any job application. The precisely engineered spiral tooth pattern on the rotor ensures continuous tooth contact with the material being cut. For maximum cutting performance, the Carbide Cutter G3 features a two-stage cutting chamber with staggered counter teeth and a shear bar. This combination of features results in small particle sizes, while eliminating the jamming and wrapping issues associated with other products, according to the manufacturer. An optional primary-stage shear bar also is available for ultrafine mulching. The mulching heads operate at 1,700 to 2,150 rpm and feature a four-groove banded belt drive with spring-loaded tensioner. They come standard with a fixed-displacement, piston-style motor that delivers hydraulic power at 97-percent efficiency, which is much higher than traditional gear-type motors offer. The fixed-displacement motor can be upgraded to the V-Drive system that includes a variable-displacement motor with load-sensing technology. Under light loads, the V-Drive system operates at maximum rpm, and as the load increases, it automatically lowers The Carbide Cutter G3 is available with 51-, 61- and 71-in. (129.5, 155 and 180 cm) cutting widths.

the rotor rpm to maximize torque. The mulching head offers full rotation, due to specially designed hose routing. This feature also allows the unit to easily position trees with the adjustable push bar and welded claw hooks. The push bar can be used to push falling brush and trees away from the power unit, and the claw hooks can pull material into position for proper feeding. Hydraulic push bar adjustment is optional. The Carbide Cutter G3 also is designed for maximum durability. For instance, high-strength Hardox steel is used in areas exposed to high wear. Furthermore, the Carbide Cutter G3 is equipped with a custom hydraulic control valve that protects the unit from pressure spikes, and it also stops the rotor quickly on shutdown without damaging the components, according to the manufacturer. Other standard features include an on-board pressure gauge, steel deflector chains and adjustable skid shoes. Celebrating New Beginnings…

Vermeer Announces Relocation of New San Antonio Facility Wheel loader production will initially start for the L60-L90 range of loaders here at the new plant in Shippensburg, Pa.

Investment Affirms Volvo CE’s Long-Term Confidence as Leading Industry Player

The wraps are taken off the Volvo L60G during the ribbon-cutting ceremony March 21 in Shippensburg, Pa. This commemorative wheel loader was the first completed at the new plant. Because Shippensburg is the new Volvo CE North American headquarters, Canada’s colors were featured on the other side of the wheel loader. VOLVO from page 14

million of investments in recent years. The company also continues to invest in order to maintain its position as a leading industry player. Olney said that the Shippensburg investment is particularly special to him; he was Volvo CE’s president of Road Machinery in Shippensburg from 2007 to 2009. “The first $30-million investment actually was initiated when I was in this facility, so this is a nice trip down memory lane for me,” he said. “I have a real personal connection to this location. The $30 million dollars was very factoryfocused. We built a new assembly hall. We built the warehousing center to give us the capacity to bring some of these products here. The $100-million investment, which we are in the middle of now, is about bringing the products here, but it is also about our customers. Part of that is we brought our sales team here. We brought all the functions under one roof. We also are going to invest in training and demonstration facilities adjacent to this property so we can give our customers and dealers a one-stop shop for experiencing the Volvo Construction Equipment brand in North America.” Volvo CE also reaffirmed its ongoing heavy focus on road building equipment in this area of Pennsylvania.

Vermeer Texas-Louisiana celebrated the grand opening of its newly relocated San Antonio store with an open house on April 4.

Vermeer Texas-Louisiana, a market leader in environmental and construction equipment with 11 locations across Texas and south Louisiana, celebrated the grand opening of its newly relocated San Antonio store with an open house on April 4. This location replaces the facility on Director Drive that the dealership has occupied for the last 35 years. Located on 8 acres within the city limits of Selma off Interstate 35, the new 34,000 sq. ft. location provides for more service bays, a larger parts warehouse and equipment showroom and dedicated training facility. With the additional space, Vermeer will be able to stock more equipment as well as host demonstration and training events. Approximately 300 people attended the April 4th grand opening celebration. In addition to the team from Vermeer Texas-Louisiana, leaders from Vermeer Corporation including Chairman of the Board Bob Vermeer, President Jason Andringa and President Doug Hundt were on hand for the special event. The Randolph Metrocom Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony that included leaders from the city of Selma and local community ambassadors. Branch Manager Brian Harris said, “We were extremely grateful for the outpouring of support our customer base and the local community have shown throughout our relocation. We are committed to serving our customers and the new facility will help us better meet their needs.”

“We are continuing to take steps to cement our position as a leading competitor in the road industry, which is an important future opportunity for this market,” Olney said. “We have invested in creating a paver-focused factory. We have found that the production of pavers requires special know how, which we have, but also special focus and special processes to optimize it. We took advantage of the fact (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment that we have a self contained facility in Letterkenny, Pa., Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) just 15 minutes down the road from here, and we have cre- CEG ated within those four walls, a labor-focused factory where we will have all the expertise, not only on making new machines, but also doing rebuilds for the customer as well, as part of our continued strong focus on road machinery.” Throughout the press conference, Olney, more than anything else, stressed jobs and care for the customer. “One of the benefits here of this localized focus is that we are going to be creating jobs not only here in this factory, but throughout the supply chain in Pennsylvania and also in other parts of the United States. We really believe it is important to be close to the customer,” he said. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequip- Approximately 300 people attended the April 4 grand mentguide.com.) CEG opening celebration.

BrightSource Helps Build Unique Solar Power Plant By Jeff Winkie

the ability to traverse the ephemeral washes of the site and still meet the tight tolerances required for the pylon insertion. Trimble experts recognized that determining the exact location points for the pylons with the machine — not with surveyors — needed to be the solution. And the solution was found in an unconventional source. “We were looking at 173,500 holes that needed to be drilled and 173,500 pylons that needed to be inserted,” Wagner said. “The rigs had to have the accuracy of a surveyor’s rod AND the ability to collect the pylon’s ‘as-built’ data.” The answer came from Trimble, who had experience with Trimble HYDROpro Construction Software, a software package for specialized waterway and coastal construction tasks that require precise point positioning. HYDROpro Construction’s pile feature is

When completed, the BrightSource Energy-designed Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS) in California’s Mojave Desert will look striking. Its innovations will provide much needed power during the peak hours of the day to more than 140,000 homes in California. ISEGS is a 392 megawatt gross solar complex using more than 300,000 garagedoor-size mirrors to focus the power of the sun on solar receivers atop power towers. The solar receivers are like traditional boilers, turned inside out. The project is located about five mi. from the California-Nevada border on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. BrightSource Energy’s proprietary solar thermal energy system is engineered to produce predictable, reliable and cost-competitive clean energy. BrightSource’s solar thermal energy systems generate power the same way as traditional power plants — by creating high temperature steam to turn a turbine. However, instead of using fossil fuels or nuclear power to create the steam, the system uses the sun’s energy. BrightSource is headquartered in Oakland, California. The ISEGS complex is comprised of three separate plants to be built in phases between 2010 and 2013, and will use BrightSource Energy’s Luz Power Tower solar thermal technology. The Ivanpah facility is the first BrightSource solar power plant of this type of technology. It also will be the smallest in scale, compared to what is currently on the company’s drawing board. It’s almost an understatement to describe the ISEGS project as being large and complex. It is unique. It is unusual. And it is a challenge. San Francisco-based Bechtel, the giant engineering, construction, and procurement firm, is responsible for managing the construction process of the unique project. They have more than 2,000 employees working on the site.

The excavators are equipped with custom, shortened masts manufactured by HMC, so that they can safely reach multiple pylons from one location within the no-drive zones.

“I had worked with grade control technology in the past and felt comfortable soliciting input early in the process to see if there might be an efficient GPS machine control solution for building the solar fields,” said Mark Wagner, lead area superintendent with Bechtel. “We were looking at the precision placement of 173,500 pylons scattered over 3,600 acres, so traditional staking would be incredibly time consuming and very costly.” It was clear that the ISEGS project would be more than a typical machine control system project, so Dave George, commercial manager-worldwide with Trimble brought in the local Trimble dealer and appropriate product and machine experts from within Trimble, including personnel from the United States, New Zealand, and Holland. The project would require a highly customized solution. The three parties — Bechtel, Trimble, and the local Trimble dealer — determined that an excavator-mounted vibratory hammer

could work if the Trimble technology and custom attachment could work together. They travelled to vibratory hammer manufacturer, Hercules Machinery Company (HMC), headquarters in Fort Wayne, Ind. to create a custom vibratory hammer that could be mounted to a long reach excavator, with

used for precise pile positioning applications for bridge and wharf construction. Trimble engineers were able to modify this powerful construction software for use on the Mojave Desert site where water is scarce and the average annual rainfall is less than five inchsee BRIGHTSOURCE page 40

es. There was a tremendous amount of testing — three different rounds — before the custom approach was adopted for implementation. BrightSource has stringent requirements for its outcome and how the project would be completed. “BrightSource had tested and rejected four other pile driving systems from other suppliers,” said Wagner. “We were happy to provide a creative solution that would work, while accommodating the stringent environmental concerns we needed to operate within.” Because of environmental impact concerns regarding disruption of soil, plant, and animal life, the site was not graded before the pylons were placed. The ISEGS site is under the jurisdiction of the California Bureau of Land Management and requires minimal environmental impact. The site’s three solar fields have alternating bands of “drive zones” and “no-drive zones.” The excavators are allowed to maneuver and operate in the 130-ft. (39.6 m) wide no-drive zones due to their innovative design. The excavators are equipped with custom, shortened masts manufactured by HMC, so that they can safely reach multiple pylons from one location within the no-drive zones. They are equipped with wide tracks with triple grousers for low impact. Their long reach and multiple degrees of freedom of the mast, mean that they don’t have to drive up to each pylon like a traditional pile-driving rig would need to do. Since the drill and the vibratory hammer are interchangeable on the mast, the same make and model excavators are used for both drilling and insertion. That means they travel in the same tracks with each pass through the solar field, reducing impact to the desert even further.

The Trimble HYDROpro Construction system is used strictly for its positioning and data collection capabilities, which saved Bechtel approximately 10 to 30-minutes of surveyor time per pylon, to lay out the holes, lay out the pylons, and collect the as-built data after the pylon was inserted. “Our excavators with the HYDROpro systems provide precise XY location, as well as verticality and orientation,” said Wagner. “Trimble also helped us collect Z (sea level) elevation of the top of the pylon, which is

fed into and collected by HYDROpro.” The BrightSource Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System has 14 excavators working on the site, and all are equipped with Trimble HYDROpro Systems. The Bechtel crews are averaging between 75 and 125 pylons per day, per machine. Each excavator cab is outfitted with a Trimble Tablet handheld computer running HYDROpro System software. The machines have two receivers — a Trimble SPS852 GNSS Modular Site Positioning

System Receiver and a Trimble SPS552H Heading Add-on GNSS Receiver, which is designed to calculate the precise heading of the machine, so that all the pylons can be oriented per specification. Additionally, the Trimble system was instrumental because GPS was required by BrightSource for converting the latitude and longitude into an ECEF or Earth Center, Earth Fixed location. BrightSource uses a center of earth location in relation to the sun so that each mirror in its solar generating system is precisely aligned. The environmental impact concerns are tremendous and govern how work is completed. At any given point, there are 60 to 90 biologists and botanists on site making sure that endangered plant life and wildlife are not harmed. Rare plants, snakes, jackrabbits, lizards, and the endangered desert tortoise are moved off site or into nurseries until the project is complete. If a desert tortoise wanders into a work area, everything must stop until a biologist can safely remove it from harm’s way. BrightSource’s Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is on schedule and becoming a reality in California’s Mojave Desert. It is currently the largest concentrated solar plant under construction in the world. According to BrightSource, the ISEGS site will become a success story for solar electric generating facilities to be built all over the world. Project Includes Sewer/Water Utilities Rehabilitation

James Hubbard RLW photo James Hubbard RLW photo

There have been some major challenges, such as the construction of a new sewer vault while maintaining active lines, which required bypass pumping for three weeks LOGAN from page 1

enhancements/turn lanes for 200 North, 1000 North, 1400 North, and 2500 North; new curbs, gutters and sidewalks for both sides of 200 North to 800 North and the west side of 800 North to 1400 North; widening 2500 North from 1000 West to 600 West to five lanes; a new sewer line on 1000 West from 200 North to 1700 North; a dry sewer line for future development from 1700 North to 2500 North; two new water lines for 200 North to 2500 North; and new manholes and stub outs from 1000 West to 600 West. Utilities also are taking the opportunity to upgrade their infrastructure — Questar, Comcast, Century Link, and Logan Power. Thus far only utility work for 1000 West — 200 N to 1000 N east side — has been completed. “The project consists of mostly complete rehabilitation of all sewer/water utilities, storm drains/irrigations systems and the complete reconstruction of the roadway to be replaced all in white paving (PCCP) at a 9" depth,” said RLWCC Project Manager Gaylen Stewart. “We’re replacing approximately 13,000 linear feet of sewer — 60 inch to 15 inch, and paving 45,000 cubic yards of PCCP (Portland Cement concrete paving).” There have been some major challenges such as the construction a new sewer vault while maintaining active lines, which required bypass pumping for three weeks. “Huge 24 inch pumps were set up — two each — pumping live sewer while constructing the new sewer vault/plugs were placed in the lines and pumps were put in place for about 3.5 weeks/24 hours per-day with a very high risk of failures/breakdowns,” said Stewart, who notes how important cooperation with municipal and DOT officials is in dealing with issue that will crop up. “We have a great working relationship — we are a team when it comes to issues and problems. We all work for a common goal — completing the project on budget.” Cold winter temperatures also are having an impact. “It has been especially brutal with very cold temperatures for the last two months — minus 25 F for weeks on-end,” said Stewart. “We had snow on the ground as of December and the frost had been driven deep, which added to the difficulty of working around live utilities. “Working with utilities is very difficult and there are many unknowns,” he added. “We deal with issues on a daily basis and resolve them on a daily basis. There have been no major

schedule delays so far with the utilities and the owners have been doing a great job in helping out.” Extensive pre-planning was essential in anticipating weather-related problems and maintaining various utilities, which affected potential scheduling and equipment use and maintenance. “We have a weekly scheduling meeting as we utilize a four-week look ahead for planning road closure and traffic delays for utility crossings,” said Stewart. “Staker Parsons, the general contractor for phase 1, is now a sub-contractor for phase 2 and this has helped with many aspects of the project.” When completed, the project is expected to result in the excavation of 70,000 cu. yds. 53,519 cu m) of road and 30,000 cu. yds. (22,937 cu m) of granular barrow. Close to 10,000 ft. (3,048 m) of new fencing will be installed and 150,000 sq. ft. (13,935 sq m) of temporary paving. Material recovered from the existing road and underground infrastructure will be recycled as much as possible. For this project, RLWCC is relying solely on its own equipment and when the work reaches its full peak, there should be a minimum of 10 track hoes and six loaders on site at all times. Currently, RWLCC has two track hoes and two loaders (Caterpillar) and Whitaker Construction has eight plus track hoes and six loaders (Volvo) on the job. The paving equipment, Gomaco, includes a 2800 4 track, while an Eriestrayer concrete batch plant is being used. “We only own what can be utilized cost effectively,” said Stewart, who said that no new equipment was purchased for this project. RLWCC purchases much of its equipment from dealers such as Cat, Komatsu, Grove, Gomaco, Manitowoc and H&E and has done much to develop good relationships with its equipment dealers. “Many years of service and good relations with local dealers has been beneficial as the highway dollars have been in good standing for the last few years, keeping everyone working and sales strong,” said Stewart, “although it has slowed down as the market in Utah is slowing and [we’re] looking for work out-of-state. We sell and purchase equipment as needed to keep our fleets state-of-the-art and remain competitive.” The company’s main shop is located in West Jordan, 90 mi. from its offices. Scott Gardner, RLWCC’s principal

equipment manager, placed a great emphasis on preparation for the current project. “We have very rigorous maintenance schedules that are implemented to keep our equipment running very well at all times, with a mechanic on duty 24 hours per day as needed,” he said. Brandon Blanchard, the onsite project superintendent/construction manager, has been bearing the brunt of the weather, revising work schedules and short-term objectives on a daily basis to maintain the overall schedule and complete the project on time. Onsite/shop Master Mechanic Jon Christiansen has one mechanic assisting him. Adverse weather conditions were anticipated, with repairs and scheduled maintenance being done on site and outside. “We just did pre-maintenance prior to delivery to the site and maintain daily up-keep,” he said. “When it’s minus 20 F or more we would wait until later in the day to start work as 90 percent of the equipment would not run properly or in some cases equipment damage was not worth running at those temps. We can do repairs within hours in most cases. We use Wheeler, the Cat dealer, for close stuff as they have a shop on 1000 West which helps.” Whitaker Construction, one of the subcontractors is looking after its own equipment at its own shop “They have a mechanic to do their work and can sub out,” said Christiansen. “They own mostly Volvo tack units.” Major subcontractors include Whitaker, which is responsible for the utility work and has 20 people on site and Parson/Staker which will have about 20 people, along with drivers — it is responsible for the earth work and removals. Although RLWCC has encountered weather challenges in the past, Stewart stresses that good planning continues to keep the project on track. “We’re are managing mostly subs at this time [Whitaker] until paving starts this spring or weather allows,” said Stewart. “Our crews are not doing anything new — just continuing what they have always done. We have four personnel on the project at this time managing the rest. We are always in training mode to help in all areas of the business.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Bergkamp’s M216 Paver Ideal for Large Preservation Jobs

GOMACO Debuts Sidewalk Paver at World of Concrete GOMACO introduced the GT-3200 sidewalk paver with an adjustable aggregate base mold on the front and a sidewalk paving mold on the rear at World of Concrete 2013. It’s a three-track paver designed specifically for zero-clearance sidewalk rehabilitation projects, fulfilling a contractor’s unique request. The GOMACO GT-3200 can be equipped with a front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mold to spread the base aggregate for the sidewalk. During the first pass, rock is placed on grade and an auger spreads the material, while three pan vibrators mounted to the mold start the compaction process. The base mold is equipped with two heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders that provide 14 in. (35.6 cm) of hydraulic lift for setting the grade depth below the track line and raising the mold for the paving pass. During the second paving pass, the sidewalk is slipformed with a unique, minimumclearance trailing mold. The GT-3200 sidewalk paver has a 20 in. (50.8 cm) wide, 14 ft. (4.3 m) long folding conveyor. The conveyor allows ready-mix trucks to discharge from the street instead of driving over existing curb to reach the paver. The hydraulic pivoting conveyor also has been designed to rotate 180 degrees to allow for easy loading of concrete into the hopper from either side of the machine and to avoid obstacles asso-

ciated with zero-clearance paving. The sidewalk mold features hydraulic adjustable sideplates to form the GOMACO edge, while a trailing stainless pan provides the superior finish. The sidewalk mold also can be equipped with a bar inserter for placing transverse bars into the slab, if required by project specifications. The GT-3200 sidewalk paver also features all-track steering, which saves time getting on and off stringline, allows better job-site mobility, and ease in loading and unloading for transport. It can be transported without removing either the front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mold or the rear-mounted sidewalk paving mold. Simply fold the conveyor and drive the GT3200 onto the trailer for transport. It features the latest in GOMACO machine control with the exclusive G+ system with a new full color screen. G+ is a powerful controller for paving accuracy and electronic monitoring of steering and grade. G+, combined with the GT-3200’s C4.4T Caterpillar engine with 91 hp (67.9 kW), provides plenty of power for sidewalk paving, according to the manufacturer.

The M216 can carry 16 cu. yds. (12.2 cu m) of aggregate in a level struck load, 1,500 gal. (5,678 L) of asphalt emulsion and 1,000 gal. (3,785 L) of water.

Bergkamp Inc., based in Salina, Kan., offers the M216 trailer-mounted slurry seal and micro surfacing paver, which is ideal for highway and large preventive maintenance jobs. It provides increased material capacity over truck-mounted units, and is Bergkamp’s largest self-contained slurry seal and micro surfacing paver. The M216 offers improved maneuverability when used with a short-wheelbase truck, and allows contractors to achieve higher truck utilization — since the truck can be used for other applications in the offseason. Slurry seal and micro surfacing is a mixture of aggregate, asphalt emulsion, water and additives that is applied over existing pavement as one smooth layer — which can extend the life of pavement by up to seven or more years. The M216 can carry 16 cu. yds. (12.2 cu m) of aggregate in a level struck load, 1,500 gal. (5,678 L) of asphalt emulsion and 1,000 gal. (3,785 L) of water. The water tank is located at the front of the trailer to provide better weight distribution and handling. It also has a 55gal. (208 L) stainless steal additive tank. (This story also can be found on The pugmill, conveyor and all liquid mateConstruction Equipment Guide’s Web site at rial tanks are removable. All tanks are bolted in rather than welded, adding extra durawww.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

bility and easy maintenance. The asphalt emulsion and water tanks are separate components, eliminating rust-through and cross-contamination of products. The M216 is run by an onboard engine. It provides flexibility to better manage legal load weight restrictions by adding up to three tag axles, including one behind the drive axle — which increases the wheelbase and helps meet the Federal bridge law. Aggregate is delivered to the pugmill by a belt-over-chain conveyor that eliminates slippage. Steep hopper walls minimize bridging problems, while the hopper’s polyethylene lining reduces friction. This eliminates the need for a vibrator, which decreases problems with loose bolts and damage to welds and components. The water, asphalt emulsion and additives ratios are regulated as they are pumped into the pugmill, where they are mixed with the aggregate. The variable-speed, dual-shaft, multi-paddle pugmill has a dual hydraulic drive, which provides even mixture and material flow. Subaru Offers Specially Designed Engine for Rammers Subaru’s ER12 rammer engine features a carefully balanced and engineered design, and is exclusively intended for the demanding application of rammers. With speciallydesigned components and overhead cam (OHC) technology, this 3-hp, 4-stroke engine is lightweight, yet rugged and powerful. Weighing in at just over 20 lbs. (9 kg), the ER12 offers more power and up to 24 percent more output than similar engines, all while being lighter weight and designed for optimized balance and performance, according to the manufacturer. Unlike rammer engines that have been modified from their general-purpose engines, Subaru’s ER12 rammer engine is specifically designed for this piece of equipment and its unique demands. The vertical cylinder design is slim and compact, and maintains its center of gravity to effectively transmit power to the ground. The recoil has been integrated into the flywheel and blower housing, further enhancing balance and overall engine performance. Utilizing belt-driven OHC technology, the ER12 offers more power, easier starting and quieter operation than other engines in its class. The OHC design provides improved engine performance without adding extra weight, while the technology allows the

intake and exhaust valves to be positioned to offer lower resistance for the air/fuel mixture flow, thus optimizing engine performance. The ER12 also features a highly efficient hemispherical combustion chamber. By centrally locating the spark plug, maximum combustion is achieved and the engine is able to utilize a higher compression ratio, resulting in more power and torque, according to the manufacturer. The ER12’s lightweight design further optimizes rammer balance, and the reduction in weight is achieved with the inclusion of several specially-designed features. The crankcase features a thin-wall, yet durable construction and a lightweight aluminum flywheel. High-strength torsion bolts extend from both the cylinder head and the gear cover deep into the crankcase. This design allows less material to be required on the cylinder, heads and blocks, further reducing overall weight while improving structural strength. The muffler size and weight has been reduced,

due to the use of high-strength aluminized metal, while the resin air cleaner features glass-fill, making it lightweight, durable and resistant to cracking. Because of their constant up-and-down motion, rammer engines are difficult to lubricate. The ER12 has addressed this concern by including a pressure lubrication system. A gear pump transfers oil from the bottom of the crankcase to various parts of the engine that need critical lubrication. Additionally, the belt

Subaru’s ER12 rammer engine is exclusively intended for the demanding application of rammers.

moves oil to the top of the engine, ensuring all areas are properly lubricated. This thorough lubrication leads to better performance and longer engine life. Engine performance is further optimized due to the breather system. This system

separates the oil in the crankcase from air passing through the breather system. Not only does this result in better performance, oil consumption rates and emissions are reduced. To enhance equipment and operator safety, the ER12 also includes a low oil pressure shut-off system, while an emergency-stop device further increases safety. A digital CPU ignition system is designed to protect the operator and engine from over-speed, while also providing more accurate spark timing. Maintenance is simplified with a structurally-integrated crankcase and improved air cleaner sealing. For added convenience and transport ease, the ER12 can be laid on either side without causing oil or starting problems. The 120cc-displacement ER12 engine offers an output of 2.6 kW (3,600 rpm) and is suitable for 60 to 80 kg class rammers. It meets EPA Phase III emissions standards and is backed by Subaru’s 3-year limited warranty. For more information, call 847/540-7300 or visit www.subarupower.com. WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT, THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlays and profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

optimized via the patented Cat Adaptive Control System (ACS) valve, and energy is reused via the hydraulic hybrid swing, which captures the excavator’s upper structure swing brake energy in accumulators and then releases the energy during swing acceleration. It all adds up to a three part system that is designed to reduce fuel usage by as much as 25 percent over the 336E standard model, and 33 percent over the previous 336D standard model. As far as cost goes, the new hybrid model will come at a premium but, according to Cat, because of the fuel savings, the cost can be recouped within one year to 18 months over the price of a non-hybrid model, depending on usage. Since much of the design changes of the hybrid excavator are under the hood, Caterpillar has developed a 3-D model of the entire excavator that allows users to see every single detail of the interior. The model, which was displayed by Brian Stelbrink, Caterpillar’s product application

Pascagoula, Miss. added the highest percentage of new construction jobs (51 percent, 1,800 jobs) followed by El Centro, Calif. (23 percent, 300 jobs); Anchorage, Alaska (22 percent, 1,800 jobs), Fargo, N.D. (20 percent, 1,200 jobs) and Merced, Calif. (20 percent, 300 jobs). Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas (13,200 jobs, 8 percent) added the most jobs. Other areas adding a large number of jobs included Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas (10,700 jobs, 10 percent); Los Angeles-Long BeachGlendale, Calif. (8,500 jobs, 8 percent) and Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (7,200 jobs, 12 percent). The largest job losses were in Northern Virginia (minus 3,100 jobs, minus 5 percent); followed by Cincinnati-Middletown, Ohio-Ky.-Ind. (minus 2,400 jobs, minus 7 percent); Raleigh-Cary, N.C. (minus 2,300 jobs, minus 8 percent); Charleston, W.V. (minus 2,100 jobs, minus 15 percent) and Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn (minus 2,100 jobs, minus 13 percent). Monroe, Mich. (minus 22 percent, minus 500 jobs) lost the highest percentage. Other areas experiencing large percentage declines in construction employment included Atlantic CityHammonton, N.J. (minus 20 percent, minus 1,000 jobs) and Rockford, Ill. (minus 18 percent, minus 700 jobs).

Association officials noted that the rebound in construction employment in many parts of the country is taking place despite a 17 percent decline in public sector construction spending during the past four years. They added that additional cuts, including $4 billion in construction cuts from the federal sequester, would have a significant impact, especially on firms that specialize in public sector work. They added that reports that an immigration reform proposal that includes severe limits on skilled construction workers would make it hard for recovering firms to find enough skilled workers. “Between the dismantling of skills-based, vocational, education programs, the aging of the current workforce and years of bad economic news that have discouraged potential entrants from considering careers in construction, the pool of available skilled workers is relatively small,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “This industry could go from having too little work to having too few workers. Thus, it is critical for comprehensive immigration reform to include reasonable options to recruit temporary guest workers when domestic sources are exhausted.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

specialist, was displayed on a wide touch screen that allowed users to see deep into the inner workings of the engine, the adaptive control system, and even into places that usually only mechanics can get into. “It’s really helped people visualize what’s going on inside,” said Stelbrink. For anyone waiting to get a chance to utilize this new model, factory shipments began in March of this year. In addition to the hybrid excavator, Caterpillar unveiled the first of several new wheeled material handlers in the MH3049. According to Cat, high strength structural steel and advanced welding techniques ensure structural integrity; a powerful hydraulic system provides rapid response with efficiency; a Cat C9 ACERT engine delivers reliable, fuel-saving performance;

and new serviceability features simplify maintenance. These design elements combine to provide low-cost operation and maximum value for the MH3049 customers. According to Cat, major structures use continuous welds that incorporate extensive chamfering and beveling to reduce stress concentration. Both the booms and sticks are constructed from single piece top and side steel plates eliminating the need for seams and internal baffles. The upper frame is designed specifically to dissipate loads transferred through the front linkage and counterweight, and the lower frame’s unique tapered design evenly distributes loads and reduces stress. Oversized pins and bushings strengthen pivot points. In addition, extensive finite element analysis and strain-gauge testing throughout the design process ensure longterm durability. Also on the MH3049, the hydraulic cabriser system features “ground entry and exit” with a step-in cab, enhancing safety for operators and service personnel. Cab height on both machines is adjustable up to an eye level of 18.75 ft. (5.70 m) on the MH3049 and 23.5 ft. (7.2 m) on the MH3059. On the MH3049, raise time from ground level to maximum height is approximately 14 seconds; lowering time from maximum height to ground level is 12 seconds. Similarly, the raise time from ground level to maximum height on the MH3059 is approximately 17 seconds and lowering time from maximum height to ground level is 13 seconds. Adjustable sensors control the height of the cab above the ground. A manual safety override in the cab allows the operator to lower the riser in the event of engine power loss. Contractor Employs Several Hammers for Demolition Job DEMOLITION from page 16

the Allied/Rammer Model 4511, which is a 12,000-ft.-lb. machine that requires a carrier of 88,200 lbs. (40,007 kg) and up. Terry Tomasko, equipment superintendent of Independence, said the Allied/Rammer Model 7013 hammer was selected “based on our past experience and future needs for demolishing thick concrete.” One of the demolition tasks at the Medical Mart complex involved demolishing and removing a concrete floor that ranged from 2.5 to 5 ft. (.76 to 1.5 m) thick. “They had some massive concrete that had to be demolished (at the Medical Mart site),” said Ed Wilk. “It needed some big guns to get it down and get it out. That’s the only hammer we could use on the thick concrete. Once you find something that works, you go with it. The production of the Model 7013 hammer was very good. To my knowledge it met all of our expectations.” Ed Wilk said Independence planned a sequence of events to demolish the thick concrete floor, which supported a retaining wall that needed to be preserved. Alternating sections of the floor were hammered out while some sections remained to support the retaining wall. Saw cutting came first, followed by the Allied/Rammer 7013. The floor sections being demolished were on the order of 35 to 40 ft. (11 to 13 m) wide, by 60 or 70 ft. (18 to 21 m) long. “We’d hammer out one section, skip 10 or 12 feet, then take out another section,” said Ed Wilk. Richard Wilk said the Allied/Rammer 7013 was also used to demolish part of the parking garage. It was a cast-in-place concrete parking garage with the convention center underneath it. Again, the Allied/Rammer 7013 had no problem taking down the heavy beams and columns in the cast-in-place concrete parking deck. “The Allied/Rammer 7013 exceeded our expectations and helped us complete demolition on time,” said Tomasko. The MMCC will use 20 to 25 percent of the crushed concrete on site for stone fill, sidewalk and roadway bedding materials. The remainder will be used for local Cleveland projects. The goal is to recycle 95 percent of the construction and demolition material produced by the project. In addition to concrete, steel, aluminum, copper, reinforcing steel, brick, block, wood, gypsum, asphalt, plastic, cardboard and paper are all being recycled to help meet the 95 percent goal. MMCC plans to recover 190,000 cu. yd. (145,265 cu m) of dirt and topsoil and 124,000 cu. yds. (94,805 cu m) of recyclable

materials, leaving 6,000 cu. yds. (4,587 cu m) of waste. Ed Wilk said he has been involved in many projects in downtown Cleveland but not on this scale. “Working in downtown Cleveland is always a challenge because the rest of the world is trying to go forward while you are trying to build a building,” he said.
