JCB achieved its third most profitable year in its 68-year history in 2013, the company announced. Earnings stood at $529 million on an EBITDA basis (2012: $616 million) on turnover of $4.53 billion (2012: $4.56 billion). JCB’s machine sales stood at 66,227 (2012: 69,250). “The global market for construction equipment was more challenging throughout 2013, but I am delighted that, despite difficult market conditions, JCB delivered a strong performance and achieved the third highest profit in its history,” said JCB Chairman Lord Bamford. “Turnover remained virtually unchanged year-on-year, but volume and earnings were adversely affected by a slowdown in emerging markets, notably India, where JCB has a strong presence. This was further compounded by adverse currency movements in some economies. “Turnover growth in the UK, Middle East and Africa during 2013 helped to offset reductions in India, Europe and the Far East. see JCB page 28

HONOLULU (AP) Construction delays related to Honolulu’s awarding of rail contracts before it had all the necessary federal approvals have cost taxpayers $76 million so far. The costs are tied to three contracts awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. and its joint venture, Kiewit Kobayashi, between 2009 and 2011, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. The firms hired staff, set up offices and acquired construction equipment after deals were signed. But they had to wait as long as 22 months to start work because it took the city until February 2012 to get all the federal approvals it needed. The city decided to award the construction contracts at an early stage in part because it wanted to “demonstrate

to the public that tangible progress was being made’’ on rail, according to a December 2011 letter from the city to the Federal Transit Administration. Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation board members agreed to pay Kiewit and Kiewit Kobayashi $34.4 million as part of the change orders. That brought the total for the delays to $76 million. The city had set aside $32.5 million, apart from its main contingency fund, to cover the most recent payouts, rail officials disclosed. Previously, officials had declined to reveal how much they had budgeted for those payments, citing negotiations with Kiewit. While the $32.5 million covers Kiewit’s claims for delays up until see DELAYS page 28

NTEA Celebrates 50 Years in Work Truck Industry

The CT681 is powered by a Cat CT Series vocational truck engine and is available with the Cat CX31 automatic transmission.

Caterpillar Expands Heavy-Duty Line With Cat CT681 Vocational Truck Caterpillar has expanded its heavy-duty line of Class 8 work trucks with the introduction of the Cat CT681 vocational truck, a setforward axle model designed for customers who prefer a longer wheelbase truck and for those who must comply with restrictive load limitations on bridges and roads. The CT681 joins the CT660, which has a set-back front axle, in the Caterpillar line of vocational trucks. The CT681 has been working in a variety of field testing applications since the third quarter of 2013. This extensive field follow program — the equivalent of more than three years of truck use — involves more than a dozen customers across North America. Applications include snow plow, concrete mixer, water truck,

dump and super dump. “Customers who are hauling heavy loads or working in extreme conditions truly appreciate the CT681’s rugged durability and styling,” said Dave Schmitz, global on-highway truck product manager. “We designed it to work hard and last for years, even in the toughest applications.” Featuring a 114-in. (290 cm) bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC), the CT681 is powered by a Cat CT Series vocational truck engine and is available with the Cat CX31 automatic transmission. An optional front frame extension (FFE) along with a front engine PTO (FEPTO) makes it easy to mount attachments such as snow plows, hose reels, winches and hydraulic pumps. Mixer installation

also is simplified, due to vertical tiein plates mounted behind the cab. The CT681 also shares many common features and components with the CT660, the first model in the Caterpillar vocational truck line, including a spacious, ergonomic cab designed to boost driver productivity and safety. Like all Cat products, it’s backed by bumper-to-bumper service at more than 400 Cat dealer locations in North America. Full production of the CT681 is expected in mid 2014. The NTEA, the Association for the Work Truck Industry, is celebrating 50 years of serving the work truck industry. The association started in 1964 in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the Truck Equipment & Body Distributors Association with six member companies. In 1978, the growing association moved to its current headquarters in suburban Detroit, the heart of the nation’s automotive industry. In 1979, based on its changing industry-wide perspective and service offerings, changed its name to the National Truck Equipment Association, or the NTEA. The legislative office opened in Washington, D.C., in 1988 to represent member interests on Capitol Hill. The NTEA, now 1,600 member organizations strong, is the leading organization representing the work truck industry. Through the years, the association has grown its capabilities to include: • Technical services for engineering, installation, compliance and certification support • Advocating on behalf of the work truck industry to protect and advance the industry’s regulatory and legislative interests • Enhancing our market data and research offerings to help member businesses succeed • Offering education, training and networking opportunities • Delivering industry information on demand “We’re dedicated to continue representing the hard working group of individuals and companies who have helped build the association and the industry into what it is today,” said Steve Carey, NTEA executive director. “As we begin our next 50 years, we will continue to provide the tools and services to help our members succeed.” The celebration will culminate during The Work Truck Show 2014, North America’s largest work truck event, March 5 to 7, 2014, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The Work Truck Show ranks among Trade Show Executive magazine’s Gold 100 Honorees, Class of 2013. In recognition of NTEA’s 50-year celebration, NTEA members have contributed historical images of their businesses through the years — showcasing the work truck industry’s evolution from the 1960’s to modern times. Kenworth Sets PACCAR MX-13 Engine Record in 2013 The 12.9-L PACCAR MX-13 engine has earned swift adoption by fleets and truck operators in the U.S. and Canadian Class 8 truck markets. “Kenworth had a record year of PACCAR MX13 engine sales in 2013,” said Preston Feight, Kenworth assistant general manager of sales and marketing. “There are more than 51,000 PACCAR MX-13 engines operating in Class 8 trucks in the United States and Canada. An increasing number of customers are choosing the PACCAR MX-13 due to the fuel economy benefits provided by this engine and the excellent service support delivered by the Kenworth dealer network.” As a result of new engine software updates, oil viscosity changes, and a common-rail fuel-injection system that optimizes combustion, the 2014 PACCAR MX-13 offers up to 1.5 percent fuel economy improvement over its 2013 version, which will provide nearly $1,200 in annual fuel savings for the typical long-haul truck. Customers who order a new Kenworth T680 in long-haul or regional applications also may select the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission, which is optimized for the PACCAR MX-13 engine. That combination may contribute up to a 2 percent fuel economy gain, and is the cornerstone of the new T680 Advantage, which includes other aerodynamic features for additional fuel savings, according to the manufacturer.

“In addition to these important fuel-efficiency factors, customers appreciate the PACCAR MX13 engine’s low cost of ownership, high horsepower and torque ratings, excellent reliability and durability, lightweight design and quiet operation,” said Feight. “Customers also benefit from the dependable PACCAR engine support provided by the Kenworth dealer network.” Available in all Kenworth Class 8 models, the PACCAR MX-13 engine offers horsepower range of 380 to 500-hp (283 to 372 kW) and torque ratings up to 1,850 ft. lb. to meet customer power requirements for hauling applications that range from lightweight to more than 100,000 lbs. (45,359 kg). The PACCAR MX-13 engine is domestically produced at the PACCAR Engine assembly plant in Columbus, Miss. For more information, visit www.kenworth.com. NPK Debuts Four New PH-Series Hydraulic Hammers

NPK now has four new PH Series hydraulic hammer models that will replace its GH-1 through GH-4 model hammers.

NPK Construction Equipment Inc. now has four new PH Series hydraulic hammer models that will replace its GH-1 through GH-4 model hammers. These new one piece body hammers are equipped with an anti-blank firing feature providing longer component life. In addition, NPK’s PH Series is available with an optional fully enclosed “Enviro-Bracket,” providing reduced noise levels. Other features include a field replaceable tool bushing and a larger diameter retaining pin for ease of maintenance and longer service life. With more than 45 percent fewer total parts than previous models the PH Series still incorporates the popular nitrogen gas powered piston for the hardest hitting hammers in their class, according to the manufacturer. The PH-1 comes in with 350 ft. lbs. impact energy, weighs 423 lbs. (192 kg)

and will fit a 2 to 3.5 ton (1.8 to 3 t) carrier. The PH-2 produces 500 ft. lbs., weighs 487 lbs. (221 kg) and fits a carrier in the 3 to 5.5 ton (2.7 to 5 t) class. The PH-3 will output 750 ft. lbs., weighs 825 lbs. (374 kg), and fits a 4 to 8 ton (3.6 to 7.2 t) carrier while the PH-4 is in the 1,300 ft. lb. impact energy class, weighs 1,064 lbs. (482 kg) and is best matched to a carrier in the 6 to 9 ton (5.4 to 8 t) weight class. NPK maintains an extensive network of nearly 300 distributor outlets and an extensive parts distribution network to assure more equipment uptime with NPK hammers as well as compactors/drivers, crushers, material processors and pedestal boom systems. Bradco Tree, Shrub Grapple Makes Hard Digging Easier The Bradco tree and shrub grapple by Paladin Attachments, the newest addition to Paladin’s extensive grapple selection, is designed to make some of the hardest tasks in landscaping quicker, cleaner and safer. Mounted on highly versatile compact tool carriers, the tree and shrub grapple can easily remove small trees, shrubs, ornamentals and small stumps — even in tight spaces. A hydraulically-powered alternative to shovels, axes, chains, or stump grinders, the tree and shrub grapple attachment reduces job time by effectively removing the whole plant, including the stump, tap and secondary root system, in one simple step. In addition to being easy to use, the tree and shrub grapple keeps clean up to a minimum by leaving dirt, gravel, mulch, etc. in place with minimal disruption to the removal site, which can often be cleaned up with just a broom. Paladin recently put the tree and shrub grapple to the test on a residential condominium project. In just three hours the contractor was able to cleanly remove more than 50 small trees and shrubs with no damage to the surrounding

vegetation, residential structures, irrigation systems or decorative garden materials. A job that would typically have required a two-man crew several days to complete with conventional tools was easily condensed into a few hours allowing the contractor to quickly finish this project and move on to the next. The tree and shrub grapple is constructed of half-in. (1.3 cm) AR 400 and AR 235 highstrength steel for maximum durability for years to come. The grapple attachment weighs 185 lbs. (84 kg) with a maximum working pressure (PSI) of 3,000 lbs. to tackle the toughest applications. There are many other uses for the versatile tree and shrub grapple attachment, including breaking up and removing asphalt driveways and removing small stumps and other appropriately sized materials. Company Wrench Awarded Patent for Montabert Reveals CP100 Magnet Combo Attachment Micro CPA Line of New Attachments

The CP100/Mag Combo consists of a 65,000-lb. (29,484 kg) excavator with an attachment to pulverize concrete at the end of a long arm.

Designed for use on a variety of carriers — including compact excavators, backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders — the Montabert Micro CPA drilling attachments are the first of their kind in North America, but have been used all over the world in pipeline trenching, utility work, tiebacks, reinforcement and long-reach applications. The Micro CPA H22/H25 drilling attachments, along with the Micro CPA R25/R32, are single-pass drills with a feed rotation of 45 degrees from vertical. They create holes with diameters measuring 1 to 1-3/4 and 1-1/4 to 3 in. (2.5 to 4.4 and 3 to 7.6 cm), respectively, with maximum hole lengths of 20 and 30 ft. (6 and 9 m). Both models can be mounted to carriers in the 5- to 10ton (4.5 to 9 t) range. The Micro CPA 360 R25/R32 drilling attachments are equipped with 360degree rotation, allowing the operator to adjust from vertical, to overhead, to horizontal drilling with ease. The R25/R32 provides a 13/4 to 3 in. hole diameter, with maximum hole lengths of 30 ft. and can be mounted to carriers in the 8- to 15-ton (7.2 to 13.6 t) range. After Fiore & Sons completed the demo of the old runway and moved 1 million cu. yds. (836,127 cu m) to rebuild the runway, United Companies came on site and moved 100,000 cu. yds. (76,455 cu m) of dirt for the large apron and taxiway. Construction consisted of the demolition of the existing 60-ft. (18 m) wide by 6,500-ft. (1,981 m) long runway and the construction of a new runway to meet C-II runway safety area and longitudinal standards.

Runway 3-21 at the county-owned Meeker Airport had reached a point of wear and deterioration that required full reconstruction and upgrades to remain compliant with the FAA’s C-II requirements.

according to the 2000 census is home to just fewer than 6,000 people. Private aircraft for energy companies including the mining niche, ranchers, fishing and hunting outfitters, as well as air charter service for both passengers and cargo are all flown in and out of Meeker Airport. Runway 3-21 at the county-owned Meeker Airport had reached a point of wear and deterioration that required full reconstruction and upgrades to remain compliant with the FAA’s C-II requirements. The project, which was awarded to Fiore & Sons Inc., Denver, Colo., was a two-stage project with a contract value of $12.5 million. Construction consisted of the demolition of the existing 60-ft. (18 m) wide by 6,500-ft. (1,981 m) long runway and the construction of a new runway to meet C-II runway safety area and longitudinal standards. The new runway was widened to 100-ft. (30.5 m) — nearly doubling its width — and remained 6,500-ft. (1,981 m) long. The runway ties into the existing apron connector with a teacup style turnaround on the 21 end of the runway. Fiore & Sons completed the demotion and removed 43,000 sq. yds. (35,953 sq m) of rotomilled asphalt in preparation for the site conditioning, grading, and paving completed by United Companies of Mesa County, headquartered in Grand Junction, Colo. United Companies employs approximately 400 workers. “We were responsible for base course and paving of the new runway and the overall construction of the large apron and taxiway,” said Jeff Boone, project manager of United Companies. “We needed to complete our portions

of the combined projects within the eight-month timeline for the whole project, so our timing was tight.” United Companies had two major responsibilities in the project: the dirt and stone work to create the subbase and the finish paving on the runway, apron, and the aircraft turnaround. Between the dirt and paving crews, United Companies had approximately 20 workers on the Meeker Airport site. After Fiore & Sons completed the demo of the old runway and moved 1 million cu. yds. (836,127 cu m) to rebuild the runway, United Companies came on site and moved 100,000 cu. yds. (76,455 cu m) of dirt for the large apron and taxiway. Between the two projects the company placed 70,000 tons (63,503 t) or 35,000 cu. yds. (26,759 cu m). of p154 and p209 crushed aggregate base course and in 6-in. (15 m) lifts with the company’s three Caterpillar 140H motorgraders equipped with Topcon 3D-MC2 machine control. “The Topcon system helped us achieve more accurate placement of the base materials at higher speeds and better tolerances,” said Jeff Gross, GPS machine control foreman of United Companies. “With a tight production deadline and stringent FAA requirements, it helped to have the technology.” As part of the machine control system, the motor graders are equipped with the Topcon GX-60 control box that features Windows XP operating system, touch-screen interface, USB file transfer capability, and a six-inch sunlight viewable color LCD screen. Additionally, the system includes a GPS antenna, MC-R3 receiver, and the MC² sensor — an inertial sensor which combines gyroscopes and accelerome-

ters to measure the X, Y and Z position as well as the roll, pitch, yaw and acceleration of the grader. The Topcon controlling software is designed to provide position updates up to 100 times per second. GDA Engineers, Cody, Wyo., provided the project control points as well as the points for drainage and utilities for the Meeker Airport project. “A tremendous amount of time and money was saved because we didn’t need to be setting grade stakes,” said Ken Dobey, construction manager of United Companies. “United Companies created the 3D site model which our GPS machine control could use — thus, the job was virtually stakeless.” Dobey pointed out that the company has been an early adopter of technology for the past 15 years, with GPS machine control in use for the past four years. “Our business approach is to be at the cutting edge of technology,” Dobey said. “We’ve found that our investments in technology save us time and resources.” In keeping with its technology adoption approach, United Companies recently added Topcon Millimeter GPS asphalt paver systems to its three Cat AP-1055D pavers. The Topcon system uses what Topcon refers to as LazerZone technology, which uses GPS positioning together with a zone laser reference provided by a PZL-1A rotating laser, which is said to transmit a signal that creates a measuring area 33 ft. (10 m) in height. United Companies consulted with Southwest Positioning Inc., Albuquerque, N.M., an authorized Topcon dealer, on the technology to see AIRPORT page 28

Delay, Expense Hyundai Construction Costs Rack Up at Lauds Partnership Least $176 Million With Cummins Inc. August 2012, it doesn’t factor in increased costs for material and personnel as construction proceeds, rapid transit authority Executive Director Dan Grabauskas said. The delay costs also don’t include expenses the project incurred during its yearlong, court-ordered halt on construction, rail officials say. Together, the delay costs and expenses linked to delays from the recently resolved court challenges have cost Oahu’s rail project at least $176 million and represent two of its most bothersome budget drains, with “substantial consequences to our bottom line,’’ Grabauskas said. Grabauskas said the rapid transit authority has estimates of how much more increased costs could add to the construction-delay total, but he declined to reveal that estimate, again citing potential future negotiations with Kiewit. “Clearly this is a very significant event that we move to resolve these claims,’’ rapid transit board Chairman Ivan Lui-Kwan said. “We’ve had challenges and claims, and one by one we’ve picked them off.’’

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc., has continued its partnership with Cummins Inc., a U.S. based global power leader, by enhancing its new 9A series product lines with Cummins Tier IV Interim engines. “Cummins state of the art engines perfectly complement our Hyundai machines giving our customers the maximum amount of power, durability and fuel efficiency they require,” said Sam Yoon, president of Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with such a distinct, cutting-edge company and look forward to many successful years to come.” Cummins Inc. is a global company with two manufacturing plants in the United States supplying engines for Hyundai equipment, located in Jamestown, N.Y., and Rocky Mount, N.C. Cummins designs, manufactures, sells and services diesel engines and related technology around the world. Cummins serves its customers through its network of 600 companyowned and independent distributor facilities and more than 6,500 dealer locations in more than 190 countries and territories. TEE Names Conor Hegarty as Its New Global Sales Director

The total weight of 48 tons (43.5 t) and the compact transport dimensions make the Lokotrack LT220D easily transportable around the world.

Metso Combines Cone Crusher With Screen in Its LT220D Mobile Crusher Lokotrack LT220D, the latest addition to Metso’s mobile crushing and screening equipment range, will revolutionize the way aggregate contractors operate around the world, according to the manufacturer. Combining a cone crusher and a screen into a single track-mounted plant, the Lokotrack LT220D reduces operational costs in several ways, most notably by substantially lowering fuel consumption and reducing the need for maintenance. In addition, the unit is compact and highly transportable. “Soaring, unstable fuel prices create demand for plants that are increasingly energy efficient and for new ways to operate. However, you can only increase the efficiency of a single machine up to a certain limit. Going beyond that point requires out-of-the box thinking and new innovations,” said Jarmo Vuorenpää, project manager at Metso Mining and Construction, describing the design process. The Lokotrack LT220D is designed with aggregate contractors in mind,

who often haul equipment on a weekly basis while striving to keep costs down. Because of its transportability, the Lokotrack LT220D enables contractors to take on smaller contracts that previously would have been unprofitable for them. “The Lokotrack LT220D is the firstever track-mounted crusher/screen combination with such compact dimensions and good transportability,” Vuorenpää said. Proven Equipment, New Framework The fuel economy of the Lokotrack LT220D is the sum of several features. Running both the crusher and the screen with a single Cat C13 309-kW diesel engine clearly makes a big difference. An efficient power transmission system enables maximum power for operating. The result is decreased fuel consumption with no compromises on capacity, according to the manufacturer. Meanwhile, a reduced number of

transported units and a quick set-up translate into an increase in effective production time. Hydraulically operated screen lifting and folding side conveyors enable the Lokotrack LT220D to be ready for action in just minutes. The total weight of 48 tons (43.5 t) and the compact transport dimensions make the Lokotrack LT220D easily transportable around the world, giving contractors plenty of flexibility with the unit. The Lokotrack LT220D is equipped with a Metso cone crusher, either the HP200 or the GP220. An intelligent control system ensures safe and reliable processes in all applications. Paired with Metso's Lokotrack LT106 mobile jaw plant, the new secondary unit is capable of producing up to three calibrated end products. For more information, visit www.metso.com.

acquire. Southwest Positioning installed the asphalt paver system and trained the United Companies machine operators. On the first day of paving, United Companies paved two 600-ft. (183 m) long test strips measuring 16-ft. (4.9 m) wide using FAA-specified HMA. Sample cores were taken from the 2-in. (5 cm) thick lift to ensure compliance. The paver guided by the Topcon paving control system provided results well within compliance. To pave the 100-ft. (30.5 m) by 6,500-ft. (1,981 m) long runway, United Companies arranged three PZL-1A rotating lasers spaced 500 ft. (45.7 m) apart and then leapfrogged them to maintain continuous production flow. A Roadtec SB-2500e material transport vehicle was used to ensure the hot mix asphalt was delivered consistently to the paver at the correct temperature and mix. “We were quite pleased with the results from the Millimeter GPS system,” Gross said. “We completed our work faster than expected and the results were superior, Only 16 out of the 2,500 test shots were out of compliance and none required corrective action.” In addition to the main runway, United Companies paved a 650-ft. (198 m) by 320-

ft. (97.5 m) apron and a 1,200-ft. (365.8 m) long by 50-ft. (15 m) wide taxiway. The complete Meeker Airport job required six layers that each needed to be checked for smoothness. The first layer was a graded dirt layer followed by three six-inch lifts of the P-154 subbase course — which is a gravel that consists of hard durable particles or fragments of granular aggregates. The fifth layer was a 6 in. (15 cm) lift of PT209 base course. And the top layer is two, 2 in. (5 cm) lifts of FAA-specified HMA. “If we had needed to complete all of this work the old way using survey crews and pounding wood, it probably would have taken us two to three times longer…the technology is that beneficial,” Boone said. “And we can’t argue about the quality of the finished results…the smoothness of the runway pavement can speak for itself.” The final International Roughness Index of the recently completed Meeker Airport runway surface is well within the FAA specifications. Both the dirt and paving crews of United Companies are pleased with the work they’ve completed on the now upgraded Meeker Airport. ore than 3,600 bidders participated online and in person at Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers’ multi-million dollar unreserved public equipment auction in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 14 and 15. Bidders came from 58 countries, including 49 U.S. states. More than 54 percent of the equipment was sold to out-of-state buyers, from as far away as Vietnam, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. Online bidders purchased more than $23 million of equipment (49 percent of the equipment sold by dollar value), setting a new company record for the state of Texas. In total, more than 3,050 equipment items were sold in the auction, including 80 plus hydraulic excavators, 60 plus wheel loaders, 55 plus dump trucks, 45 plus crawler tractors, a large selection of low hour, latemodel equipment and more

Coming all the way from England, Chris Burton of J.C. Construction in Houston, Texas, is becoming more familiar with the American equipment for his new company by checking out this Volvo EC 15B mini-excavator.

(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG Rich Brannen (L) and Michael Wallace of WSISD Police Department, Texas, keep a close eye on all the equipment for sale.

Billy (L) and Trent Gee of The Brothers Gee Dirt Works in Abilene, Texas, have an interest in this JCB JS 260L excavator.

Chris (L) and son, O.J. Laman, Laman Equipment Sales & Rentals in Cave City, Ark., have been taking a close look at this Cat 385 CL excavator.

Marvis (L) and son Greg Braswell, of TRAK Traders of Texas in Fort Worth, Texas, are thinking about bidding on this John Deere 120 excavator.
