Construction Employment Up in 42 States, D.C. for April Forty-two states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between April 2015 and April 2016 while construction employment increased in only 23 states between March and April, according to analysis of Labor Department data released May 20 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said the slowdown in monthly job growth was likely driven by mild
winter weather that allowed firms to start their spring hiring season early, but cautioned that many firms will have a hard time finding qualified workers as demand grows. "The slowdown for the month may reflect the elevated hiring that occurred earlier this year in many states that experienced mild winters," said Ken Simonson, chief economist of the associsee EMPLOYMENT page 32

$415M Bond Package...
Storm Shelter Construction Begins on Tulsa Schools TULSA, Okla. (AP) Construction is under way at the first of 20 Tulsa-area schools receiving new classrooms or library additions that double as storm shelters. A $415 million bond package that Tulsa voters approved of in 2015 includes $7.5 million to reinforce new building additions as storm shelters at 20 schools, the Tulsa World reported. Springdale Elementary is scheduled to be the first to have a completed addition around November. Springdale’s new classroom addition includes six-inch-thick, concrete walls and a new roof. Bullet-proof glass on exterior windows and doors will also be added to the $4.5 million building project. “When I came here three years ago, one of the first things I did was call our emergency management director to come walk the building with me because student safety is of utmost concern to me all the time,” said Rebecca Bacon, Springdale’s principal. “Even our bathrooms have windows in them, so there aren’t a lot of places away
from glass. In tornado drills, most of our students go to interior hallways and we put some pre-K kids in a storage room.” Schools that were selected for the additions had outgrown their permanent structures and resorted to trailers and other temporary buildings. As a result of the new shelters, 80 of Tulsa Public Schools’ 120 classroom trailers will be removed. Springdale will become the city’s sixth school with a new shelter. Five others recently received them from a voter-approved bond fund from a 2010 election. “Knowing that I will have a place where all my students would fit and be safe if a tornado were to occur during the day is a relief,” Bacon said. As Memorial Visits Oklahoma, ODOT Worker Killed A transportation memorial with names of fallen Oklahoma Department of Transportation workers came to life. Memories and reflections of the lives they lived were illuminated by loved ones who spoke at an opening ceremony for a six-day exhibit that was displayed May 13 to 22. Families who spoke at a press conference at Penn Square Mall reminded motorists that their caution in a work zone could save lives. “We do not want any more families to know the immeasurable suffering that comes after the loss of a loved one in a work zone,” said Mike Patterson, ODOT executive director. “By staying alert, slowing down and putting away distractions when entering highway work zones, Oklahoma drivers can help us eliminate the need to add any more names to this national memorial.” Thirteen people lost their lives in Oklahoma work zones in 2015, including two ODOT employees. In total, 84 people have died in the past five years in Oklahoma work zones, the majority of them motorists. The top three causes of fatal collisions, according to state accident data, are following too close, traveling at unsafe speeds and driver inattention. All 59 of ODOT’s fallen workers are among the more than 1,400 names featured on the transporta-

Michael was four months old while his older sister was about to turn five. Their father was struck by a vehicle June 26, 1998, while doing routine maintenance work along an Oklahoma highway in Chickasha. The Ledbetters anticipated seeing Gary’s name on the memorial during its brief visit to Oklahoma. Mark Vandiver can recount some close calls while working next to traffic in Oklahoma highway work zones along U.S.-69 in McIntosh County. But it’s the loss of his brother and co-worker in a work zone collision in 2012 that motivates him to ask Oklahoma drivers to help eliminate one of the most preventable causes of death. “There’s a lot of traffic on our highways,” said Vandiver, an Oklahoma Department of Transportation employee for 38 years. “Our world is moving fast. People may not be paying attention to the road signs as they enter work zones, but we really need them to. It’s a really hazardous situation for us and them.” Other speakers urged motorists

ODOT Statement on the Death of Jarrell Gray Jarrell Gray, Transportation Superintendent I in Delaware County for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, was tragically killed the morning of May 18, 2016. The department is deeply saddened by this work zone tragedy, which is felt by each of his 2,400 coworkers statewide. Our thoughts are with Gray’s family, friends and fellow crew members during this difficult time. This comes as the department is in an extensive statewide work zone safety campaign. Gray was 47 years old and had been with ODOT since December 1998. The exact cause and details of this work zone accident are currently under investigation by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The accident occurred on SH-20 west of Jay in Delaware County, while Gray was supervising a brush removal project. Gray is the 60th employee killed in the line of duty in the department’s history.

to use caution in construction zones while remembering those who have died in work zone collisions. They included: Cyndie Clubb, a mother of three, who lost her husband Terry Clubb in a work-related accident June 14, 2011, in Oklahoma City. The 53-year-old longtime ODOT employee died while inspecting construction activities on the new I-40 Crosstown when a semi-truck delivering asphalt overturned. Jerry Hietpas, founder of Action Safety Supply Co., works with contractors statewide to define highway construction work zones with signs, cones and barrels. Hietpas remembered former employee and friend, Robert W. Cherry, who fell in the line of duty for ODOT June 6, 2007, while removing debris from an Oklahoma highway. Cat Expands Offices in Ariz. With Surface Mining, Technology Gov. Doug Ducey announced an economic development project win for the state with the news that Caterpillar Inc., the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, has selected Tucson as the new location for its surface mining and technology offices. The Tucson facility will create more than 600 projected new Arizona jobs over five years, with employees in executive management, engineering, product development and support positions. The state has estimated the economic impact of Caterpillar’s consolidation in southern Arizona at $600 million. “This is a huge win for Tucson and the entire region,” said Gov. Ducey. “In addition to bringing jobs and capital investment to southern Arizona, a project of this level will have a ripple effect throughout the community and state. I’d like to thank the Caterpillar team for their commitment to and confidence in Arizona. I’d also like to thank our partners, the Arizona Commerce Authority, Sun Corridor Inc., Pima County, Rio Nuevo District and the city of Tucson, for their hard work in bringing this project to our state. This is an excellent example of Arizona’s attractiveness to businesses as well as our strength in collaborative economic development.” Caterpillar has had a more than 70-year presence in the state, and its Tucson Proving Ground and Tinaja Hills Demonstration Center locations currently have a workforce of approximately 300 people. This move significantly
expands the company’s presence in the state, bringing total Caterpillar employment in southern Arizona to nearly 1,000. Caterpillar will begin moving employees to Tucson in the summer. “The ability to get closer to our customers and tightly collaborate across all aspects of the business is at the center of our strategy. This decision positions us to build on the tremendous capabilities present at our Tucson Proving Grounds and Tinaja Demonstration Center and deliver the next generation of mining technology and leadership,” said Tom Bluth, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for surface mining and technology. “Southern Arizona is a growing region known for a workforce rich in mining, technology, and engineering expertise as well as an attractive quality of life for both families and young graduates.” “Caterpillar’s vision is to create a global mining and technology center, and we are thrilled they have selected Arizona as the ideal location to support that vision” said Sandra Watson, president and CEO, Arizona Commerce Authority. “Thanks to Governor Ducey’s leadership and the collaborative efforts with our partners in southern Arizona, we were able to bring this project to Tucson. I am confident that Arizona’s strengths in technology and workforce, combined with our pro-business environment and history of success in the mining industry will provide the perfect platform for Caterpillar’s success.” “I thank Caterpillar for their decision to relocate here, which is another sign of how much southern Arizona has to
offer,” said Congresswoman Martha McSally. “I also congratulate everyone who worked to bring these jobs to Tucson and look forward to continuing to work together to expand opportunity for our residents.” Pending formal approval by state, county and local governing boards, the surface mining and technology division will be located in downtown Tucson, which is experiencing a major resurgence. In the short term, Caterpillar will lease approximately 40,000 sq. ft. (3,716 sq m) at 97 East Congress, with renovation planned to meet the unique needs of the Caterpillar business. Caterpillar unveiled work tools designed to manage snow removal in the harshest weather conditions. The material handling bucket and straight snow push ensure a safe and reliable snow removal process while increasing efficiency and decreasing time on the job, according to the manufacturer. The attachments convert a Cat skid steer, compact track, multi-terrain, compact wheel, backhoe and small wheel loaders into a clearing powerhouse regardless of the season. 102 In. Material Handling Bucket The material handling bucket, model 2591, is the largest (width, height and capacity) offered in the bucket family. Capable of carrying up to 1.7 cu. yds. (1.3 cu m) of material at a time, the bucket is ideal for removing snow from roadways, parking lots and sidewalks. Not only is the bucket built for winter conditions, it is actually a cross-over between snow and agriculture applications. It can be used year round in light material, high capacity applications such as handling mulch, dirt or rock. The new designs enhance the safety and durability of the machine providing an optimal operator experience. The honeycomb design at the top gives the operator a great view of the amount of snow in the bucket for maximum capacity, and allows for more material retention without taking away line of sight to the edge and corners of the bucket. An integrated built-in step with metal grating makes it much easier to safely enter and exit the machine,
as the improved grating improves grip in wet weather. Also, the reversible and replaceable bolt-on cutting edge ensures complete contact with the ground for maximum snow removal, while the torque tube increases rigidity for wet, heavy loads of snow, according to the manufacturer. Cat Straight Snow Push Removing snow from any surface is safely and efficiently completed with various widths of the Cat snow pushes. The cutting edges, available in steel or rubber, are designed for moving snow in a wide range of applications. The pushes reach down to the surface and remove as much snow as possible, while the additional bolt on back drag feature allows for a straight push to pull material away from a structure. A spring loaded trip edge with tension adjustment allows the Cat snow pushes to protect themselves and the machine from obstacles that are encountered when pushing snow and ice; for example, when plowing a road and coming upon an elevated man hole cover, the unit will raise up instead of impacting the cover directly. The adjustable skid maintains a constant cutting edge height preferred by the operator. The Cat straight snow pushes are ideal for snow removal contractors clearing large parking lots, roads, and other paved surfaces. For more information, visit www.cat.com/attachments. Crawler Excavator…

At a glance, snow pushers look a lot alike. Don’t be snowed.
Doosan Introduces Line of Buckets for Harsh Conditions Doosan introduces a new line of severe-duty buckets for crawler excavator customers needing a bucket that can handle abrasive materials in heavy digging and loading applications. Doosan severe-duty buckets are approved for use with Doosan DX140LC-5 through DX530LC-5 crawler excavators. They are available in a pin-on or wedge-lock style. The severe-duty bucket sizes range from 18-in. (45.7 cm) wide for the smaller DX140LC-5, to 72-in. (182.8 cm) wide for larger Doosan excavators, such as the DX530LC-5. There are a variety of sizes and capacities in between, to best match the severe-duty bucket to the corresponding crawler excavator. Abrasive-Resistant Material Doosan severe-duty buckets are made with abrasiveresistant material for added protection and strength when digging in loose rock, or pit and quarry operations. The side cutters, shell bottom and side wear plates, and a weld-on wear shroud are made out of abrasive-resistant material. Reinforcing gussets also have been added to strengthen the machine-fitting joint on the bucket.
If it’s not the original Arctic Sectional Sno-PusherTM, you risk damage and injury.
Wear Pads Front wear pads were added to the severe-duty buckets for extra protection from rocks and irregular materials.
Arctic’s combination of components — the patented Slip-HitchTM and moldboard design, the spring-loaded trip edges, steel cutting edges, mechanical side panels and polyurethane mounting blocks — aggressively play it safe. The Sectional Sno-PusherTM easily moves over hard objects under the snow, keeping your plow intact and your operator inside the cab.
Thicker Cutting Edge, Rolled Wear Strap Doosan excavator customers needing to easily dig through tough materials such as hard rock will appreciate a new, durable, abrasive-resistant cutting edge, according to the manufacturer. Standard on the new Doosan severe-duty buckets is an abrasive-resistant wear strap. For more information, visit DoosanEquipment.com.
Don’t be a crash test dummy. Choose smart. Choose Arctic.

Kirby-Smith Honors Guild Awardees In 2004, Kirby-Smith developed its own internal award program with the goal of promoting continued education in its parts and service departments. For more than 12 years, the Guild Program has helped ensure that KirbySmith parts and service employees are continually among the best and brightest in the industry. The Guild had a banner year in 2015 setting two new records with 52 winners in six separate branch locations, the most in the program’s 12-year history. The year also marked the first time the Abilene branch featured a Guild Awardee. Randy Dennis, recipient of the award in Abilene, spoke on the journey the Abilene branch has taken to get to this level. “Since Kirby-Smith acquired the branch, the business has grown and we have learned to move at a much quicker pace,” said Dennis. “We have even had to add staff to keep up with the demand. Programs like the Guild help make sure that we take care of our customers the right way, and I think that will continue to drive our growth in the future.” To become a member of the Guild, the company requires each participant to attend more than 40 hours of technical training each year and score 100 percent on quarterly exams. Tom
Montgomery, vice president of Customer Care, spoke to the importance of the Guild Program. “If we do not strive for the highest level of professional expertise, then we will fail to provide the highest level of service to our customers,” said Montgomery. “The Guild Program is a way to honor our parts and service technicians who work to grow their knowledge and experience, so that Kirby-Smith can continue its great tradition of providing exceptional service to our customers.” The Guild Program is managed by Jay VanDuzer, product trainer, who is quick to praise the benefits the Guild has brought Kirby-Smith, as well as the dedication of his Guild members. “The Guild Program is a win-winwin,” said VanDuzer. “The customer wins by receiving a more knowledgeable technician who is able to accurately diagnose and repair the equipment the first time. Kirby-Smith wins by providing the best service and parts support for our customers. Finally, our technicians win by increasing their knowledge, as well as receiving modest monetary recognition for their efforts. Our parts personnel and technicians commit a significant amount of
their ‘off-time’ towards improving their knowledge and skill, reflecting the professional standards expected of Kirby-Smith employees. Kirby-Smith truly has a very high quality of employees and our Guild members represent the best of the best.” The 2015 awards banquets were held in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, Abilene, Amarillo and St. Louis. More than $18,000 in cash and awards were distributed during these events. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

complete remaining rock and unclassified excavation and will commence with the major road widening,” said Adele Swift, Tezak Heavy Equipment project coordinator. Swift said that as of March, the project was about 60 percent complete. “The rock excavation
is 100 percent complete, but there will be some additional rock excavation to complete the CDOT’s request,” she said. The added lanes will provide safer passing opportunities. Motorists’ site distance also will be improved. see COLORADO page 34

Mack mDRIVE HD Now Standard on Granite Models In response to increasing customer demand, Mack Trucks announced its Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) will be standard on Mack Granite models. Featuring a low ratio creeper gear, the mDRIVE HD 13-speed helps boost customer productivity due to improved performance and reduced weight, according to the manufacturer. Mack is the first truck manufacturer in North America to offer low reduction creeper gear ratios in a proprietary automated manual transmission. Since Mack announced the availability of the mDRIVE HD 13-speed in March, customer response has been overwhelmingly positive, encouraging Mack to make the 13-speed AMT standard on the Granite model starting with production of the 2017 MP8 engine. The mDRIVE HD 13-speed also is available on Mack Pinnacle and Titan by Mack models. “Making the mDRIVE HD 13-speed standard on the Granite is a natural evolution of our industry leadership,” said Dennis Slagle, president of Mack Trucks. “Since its introduction, the mDRIVE has become incredibly popular — starting first with highway and more recently with many heavyduty vocational applications. The introduction of the 13- and 14-speed gears expands the range and performance in vocational applications so much so that it is only natural for it to become our standard offering in the Granite model.” Available in direct or overdrive configurations, the new Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speed offers a low reduction creeper gear ratio designed for easier startability on steep grades or when the truck is carrying a heavy load. This improved startability also allows
customers to select a faster rear axle ratio. The faster ratio decreases engine rpm at highway speeds, saving fuel as the truck travels between job sites. The mDRIVE HD 13-speed, like all Mack mDRIVE AMTs, is monitored by Mack GuardDog Connect and serviceable at more than
400 Mack dealers. GuardDog Connect is Mack’s proactive diagnostic and repair planning system. It monitors fault codes that could potentially shut down a truck or lead to an unplanned visit to the dealer. GuardDog Connect enables quick diagnosis of issues, proactive scheduling for repairs and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job. The Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speed shares its architecture with the standard mDRIVE HD, including reinforced internal components and the same gear ratios for the 12 forward speeds. Mack also announced in March the availability of the mDRIVE HD 14-speed. The addition of the two transmissions with creeper gears enables Mack to meet the needs of a
wider range of customer applications with the power and performance that only a fully integrated powertrain can offer. Mack mDRIVE AMTs are available exclusively with Mack MP engines. Due to the new low reduction creeper gears, the mDRIVE HD 13- and 14-speed The Mack mDRIVE HD 13-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) is standard on Mack Granite models.
transmissions not only improve performance in off-road, heavy haul and construction applications, but also for on-highway applications, according to the manufacturer. Mack now offers both new mDRIVE HD variants in Mack Pinnacle models. The addition of the low reduction creeper and multispeed reverse gears is made possible by a short extension added to the front of the transmission case. Despite the additional capabilities, the new mDRIVE HD models are less than 5 in. (12.7 cm) longer and only 90 lbs. (40.8 kg) heavier than the standard mDRIVE HD, maintaining a weight advantage of nearly 150 lbs. (68 kg) compared with automatic transmissions. The Mack mDRIVE HD 14-speed, available only in an overdrive configuration, adds a second ultra-low-speed reduction gear designed for curb pouring applications or
low-speed, heavy-haul maneuvering. Both transmissions offer up to four reverse gear ratios. In addition to the two new models, all Mack mDRIVE transmissions, including the standard mDRIVE and mDRIVE HD, received numerous updates for improved performance and durability. The transmissions are controlled by a redesigned gearbox control unit, while a new clutch with a larger torsional damper helps reduce driveline vibration. Component wear monitors also were added to enable predictive maintenance. “Response to the mDRIVE and mDRIVE HD has been tremendous,” said Roy Horton, director of product strategy. “Currently, mDRIVE penetration for Pinnacle axle back and axle forward models is at approximately 80 percent and 60 percent, respectively, while mDRIVE HD penetration for Granite models is about 20 percent and growing. The penetration level of mDRIVE in all our models has continued to increase since its introduction.” Available in axle forward or axle back configurations, the Mack Granite model delivers the reliability, durability and strength expected of a Mack. The high-performing, fuel-efficient Mack MP7 and MP8 engines range from 325 hp and 1,200 lb.-ft. of torque to up to 505 hp and 1,760 lb.-ft. of torque. Every Granite model is built on Mack’s proven Cornerstone chassis and can be paired with a Mack Camelback suspension, a vocational industry standard, or the Mack mRIDE spring suspension, which delivers higher ground clearance and extreme articulation. The Mack mDRIVE HD 13- and 14speed AMTs are scheduled to go into full production in October. For more information, visit www.macktrucks.com. XL Specialized Trailers Introduces XL 90 Blademate XL Specialized Trailers launched a brand new trailer with the introduction of the XL 90 Blademate. Anticipating continued growth for the wind market, XL committed to providing a premium solution for hauling wind turbine blades safely and efficiently, resulting in the new trailer. The longer the trailer, the more difficult it can be to control the rear of it, which makes it difficult for hauling wind blades due to their length. The XL Blademate features a unique self-steering system in which the axles automatically rotate to keep the trailer behind the truck at all times; the kingpin rotates and prompts the axles to track with it using hydraulic cylinders. An override remote allows drivers to take full control as needed. Rated at 90,000 lbs. (40,823 kg) overall, the XL 90 Blademate is 53-ft. (16 m) long when closed and 184 ft. 2 in. (56 m) when fully extended. The telescoping main frame features XL’s trusted extendable technology, using 6-in. (15 cm) greasable double rollers to extend and retract smoothly. Once extended to 124 ft. (38 m), the trailer has stops every 18 in. (45.7 cm), up to full extension. A 20-ft. (6 m) pullout bumper on the rear also is on rollers, allowing for hassle-free extension. The bumper has stops every 24 in. (61 cm). Additionally, a double lock system

secures the set-up. The trailer is prepped for deck inserts, which enables a length of more than 200 ft. (61 m) overall. Adjustable non-rolling bunks are situated on the main deck customizable to the customers’ needs. The 24-in. long bunks can be moved across 40 ft. (12 m) of the main beam, providing adjustable loading areas based on the size and shape of the wind turbine blade. The fixed bunks are moved with a forklift while the rolling bunks slide smoothly and quickly into position on rollers. 20-in. (51 cm) steel loading platforms at both the front and rear of the trailer
provide tie down areas. XL has taken safety into consideration in a variety of ways on the Blademate. A beacon located on the side toolbox of the trailers illuminates when the axles turn out of alignment 3 degrees or more, which is useful for alerting other vehicles that the trailer is making a turn, and to allow the driver and pilot car to monitor any unplanned axle rotation, therefore preventing accidents. Furthermore, three red/green indicator lights signal, to both the driver and pilot car, if the power unit is on or off. A large work light on the gooseneck shines 1,200 lumens rearward, right
where users will need it to load, unload or check the load in the dark. “Our goal is always to provide a solution that makes drivers jobs easier and safer,” said Rodney Crim, vice president of sales of XL Specialized Trailers. “We are excited to provide this advanced hauling solution for the wind industry with the new XL Blademate.” For more information, visit xlspecializedtrailer.com. TBEI Lake Crystal Achieves ISO 9001:2015 Certification Truck Bodies & Equipment International Inc. (TBEI) has announced that its Lake Crystal facility has achieved ISO 9001:2015 Certification. The recognition makes the TBEI Lake Crystal facility one of the only dump body manufacturers in the United States to achieve this level of certification. The certification comes just three years after the facility was awarded the ISO 9001:2008 certification. The TBEI Lake Crystal facility manufactures the Crysteel, J-Craft and Ox SuperDump products. “This is truly a significant accomplishment, magnified by the fact that the facility achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification only three years ago,” said Bob Fines, TBEI president and CEO. “To achieve this next level of certification is very impressive. Less than one percent of companies in the United States are ISO certified, and as one of the only dump body manufacturers in the country to obtain this level of certification, we are extremely proud of our Lake Crystal facility and pleased to continue providing our cus-

Isuzu Unveils All-New Class 6 F-Series Medium-Duty Truck Isuzu Commercial Truck of America Inc. unveiled an allnew entry in the Class 6 medium-duty truck segment — the 2018 Isuzu FTR. The F-Series truck is slated to go into production in the United States in mid-2017. “This truck represents our vision of the future of the medium-duty truck industry,” said Shaun Skinner, executive vice president and general manager of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “As the adult population grows and as people move to urban centers, there will be an increasing need for delivery trucks that can carry a lot of cargo but at the same time be fuel efficient, maneuverable, environmentally friendly, and that offer a low cost of ownership. The all-new FTR achieves all of these goals.” Powertrain The FTR will be powered by Isuzu’s 4HK1-TC 5.2-L turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine — a first in the segment. “As fuel economy and emissions regulations become stricter, you’re going to see more and more competitors in this class turning to four-cylinder engines,” Skinner said. “Isuzu is a pioneer in developing and building four-cylinder transportation solutions.” Although horsepower and torque ratings have not been finalized, the company noted that the 4HK1 engine is well known for its high torque output. The powerplant will be mated to an Allison 2000 Series automatic transmission. The engine carries a B10 durability of 310,000 miles — meaning that 90 percent of engines should reach that mileage before
requiring an overhaul, according to the manufacturer. An incredible cruising distance can be achieved by the FTR, due not only to the truck’s miserly use of fuel but also its available aluminum 50 or 100 gal. fuel tank.
The F-Series truck is slated to go into production in the United States in mid-2017.
Flexibility and Capability Eight wheelbase configurations will accommodate bodies from 16 to 30 ft. (4.8 to 9 m), allowing for a wide variety of body applications. The all-new cab features a clean back-of-cab design that can provide more space for body applications compared to the previous F-Series truck. Like all Isuzu trucks, the FTR will feature a low-cab-forward design that increases visibility and markedly improves maneuverability — especially important in the crowded city centers where the FTR is expected to be in greatest demand. “With a 50-degree wheel cut, there’s not a truck in this class with a tighter turning radius,” Skinner said. Interior Design The FTR cab’s wide step and wide-opening doors allow easy entry to the spacious interior, which features three-
across seating and extra space for storage behind the seats. Additional interior amenities include a side under safety mirror, overhead console, and a suspension driver’s seat with armrest specially designed to increase comfort and reduce driver fatigue. Additional Details Pricing, available configurations, power ratings and additional features and specifications will be released in mid-2017. “The overall concept of the FTR is to bring to our customers the next generation medium-duty low-cab-forward truck, one that features a clean, durable, highly efficient fourcylinder engine and is the best Class 6 choice for pickup and delivery in cities,” Skinner said. “The letters ‘FTR’ don’t stand for ‘future,’ but this truck represents the future, and it will be here — soon.” For more information, call 866/441-9638 or visit www.isuzucv.com. Talbert Spread-Axle Trailer With E2Nitro Adds Versatility The 65-ton (59 t) spread-axle trailer outfitted with the E2Nitro nitrogen-assisted equalizing system by Talbert Manufacturing provides haulers the versatility they need to switch axle configurations and comply with individual state road regulations. This trailer also can be operated in a 70-ton (63.5 t) close-coupled configuration. Haulers can use the 65SA with a close-coupled fourth axle for a 70ton rating or a spread-axle configuration for a 65-ton rating, and the trailer’s empty weight is lighter compared to West Coast-style trailers. The trailer’s East Coast-style E2Nitro spreader features a bearing pivot and pivot lockout for backing the trailer. In addition, the E2Nitro operator can hydraulically set axle loads and keep them there in all terrains. It also allows for a 14-ft. 1-in. (4.3 m) spread between the third and fourth axle, which is ideal for haulers traveling into states that require that spread. The E2Nitro system articulates left and right and uses nitrogen to

equalize the up and down movement to provide proportionate weight distribution in each axle grouping. Through a combination of hydraulic and nitrogen equalization, the E2Nitro absorbs hauling and loading shocks and provides a greater range of suspension movement for reduced stress and a smoother ride. The system also acts as a hydraulic shim point between trailer and spreader. The E2Nitro also incorporates twospeed dual landing gear for greater
stability when it is disconnected from the trailer. Finally, the 65SA with the E2Nitro makes movement on job sites easier because operators can lift rear axles when backing up or turning around. The Talbert 65SA features a 70in. (178 cm), flip-up gooseneck extension to achieve a 190-in. (482 cm) radius. The unit also offers removable kingpin stations for 120- and 108-in. (305 and 274 cm) swing radiuses, a 30-ft. (9 m) deck length and an 8-ft. 6-in. (2.6 m)
deck width. And, like all its trailers, Talbert manufactures the 65SA with heavy-duty T-1, 100,000-psi minimum yield steel. Optional deck lengths, deck types, and widths of 9, 9 ft. 6 in., and 10 ft. (2.7, 2.9 and 3 m) also are available.. The standard 65SA model has three different capacity ratings: 65 tons (59 t) in a 15-ft. (4.6 m), 2point rigid load base as a 3+2 spread-axle trailer with 30 ft. (9 m) of deck; 65 tons in a 30-ft., 2-point
rigid load base as a 3+2 spreadaxle trailer with the addition of an 8-ft. (2.4 m) deck insert (38 ft. [11.6 m] overall); and 70 tons (63.5 t) in a 16-ft. (4.8 m), 2-point rigid load base as a 4-axle trailer with 30 ft. of deck. For more information, call 800/348-5232 or visit www.talbertmfg.com. California, Hawaii, Nevada Top List of States Adding Construction Jobs EMPLOYMENT from page 1
ation. "With construction employment having declined for the year in only six oil- or coal-intensive states, the industry appears to have plenty of work ahead and should resume hiring if firms can find enough qualified workers." California added the most construction jobs (49,800 jobs, 7.0 percent) between April 2015 and April 2016. Other states adding a high number of new construction jobs for the past 12 months include Florida (30,100 jobs, 7.1 percent), Massachusetts (13,900 jobs, 10.2 percent) and Georgia (13,600 jobs, 8.2 percent). Hawaii added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year (18.4 percent, 6,200 jobs), followed by Iowa (13.5 percent, 10,600 jobs), Massachusetts and Nevada (10.2 percent, 6,900 jobs). North Dakota lost the highest percent and total number of construction jobs (minus 12.9 percent, minus 4,600 jobs). Other states that lost jobs for the year include Wyoming (minus 10.0 percent, minus 2,400 jobs), Alaska (minus 9.7 percent, minus 1,800 jobs), Kansas (minus 5.1 percent, minus 3,100 jobs), Kentucky (minus 1.1 percent, minus
800 jobs) and West Virginia (minus 0.9 percent, minus 300 jobs). Construction employment was unchanged for the year in New Mexico and Mississippi. California added the most construction jobs between March and April (12,000 jobs, 1.6 percent). Other states adding a high number of construction jobs include Florida (4,400 jobs, 1.0 percent), Wisconsin (3,500 jobs, 3.1 percent), Iowa (3,300 jobs, 3.8 percent) and Connecticut (2,400 jobs, 4.2 percent). Idaho added the highest percentage of construction jobs (4.3 percent, 1,700 jobs) during the past month, followed by Connecticut, Iowa and Wisconsin. Construction employment declined in 25 states and D.C. during the past month and held steady in Maryland and Vermont. Tennessee shed more construction jobs than any other state (minus 3,500 jobs, minus 2.8 percent), followed by Virginia (minus 3,000 jobs, minus 1.6 percent), Michigan (minus 2,700 jobs, minus 1.7 percent), Kentucky (minus 2,300 jobs, minus 3.0 percent) and New Jersey (minus 1,800 jobs, minus 1.2 percent). Rhode Island lost the highest percentage of construction jobs between March and April (minus 3.8 percent, minus 700 jobs),
followed by Montana (minus 3.3 percent, minus 900 jobs), Kentucky, Mississippi (minus 2.9 percent, minus 1,400 jobs) and Tennessee. Association officials said they expect firms in many parts of the country will continue to expand their headcount amid growing demand for many types of construction projects. They said many firms continue to be concerned about the lack of qualified workers. Those shortages are one reason the association recently launched its new online AGC Career Center, which allows firms to find qualified workers who are looking for jobs. “As spending on projects continues to grow during the busy summer construction season, more firms will be looking to add qualified workers,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “With few students getting steered into construction careers, we want to make it as easy as possible for contractors to connect with available workers from across the country.” For more information, visit www.agc.org. The Fuchs MHL340 E material handler boasts a powerful and fuel efficient 173 hp (129 kW) turbocharged diesel engine, offering the power required to handle the most difficult tasks while saving on fuel costs. Operations can equip the MHL340 E with multiple boom and stick configurations for up to a 44.9-ft. (13.7 m) reach, including a 40-ft. (12.2 m) multi-purpose stick built with a stick-mounted hydraulic cylinder to allow up and down movement of the attachment, increasing efficiency in sorting applications. Its combination of power and long reach makes the versatile MHL340 E material handler a preferred model for a broad range of indoor and outdoor applications, including work at scrap metal feeder yards, municipal solid waste (MSW) processing at recycling/recovery facilities (MRFs) and sorting material at transfer stations, according to the manufacturer. To lower long-term operating costs, the MHL340 E handler features three-stage engine “Eco mode” operation to significantly cut fuel consumption. Conveniently controlled on the machine’s multifunction button panel, this feature allows the operator to match engine speed and power to the task at hand. For heavy-duty applications like loading and unloading trailers, the operator can select full “power mode.” When encountering less demanding tasks such as sorting material, the operator can select “Eco mode” to reduce engine RPM by 12 percent and fuel consumption by up to 27 percent or “Eco+ mode” to reduce engine RPM by up to 19 percent and fuel usage by up to 36 percent. The MHL340 E handler’s high-performance two-circuit hydraulic system increases main hydraulic pump capacity compared to previous versions, improving efficiency and machine responsiveness. Both the engine and hydraulic system include large cooling systems protected by vented panels that provide clear airflow, so the material handler runs cooler in high ambient temperatures. Its hydraulically height-adjustable cab gives operators a
maximum eye-level elevation of up to 17.7-ft (5.4-m) above ground level, simplifying loading and unloading operations. The cushioned cab elevation system provides absorption of shocks and jolts for operator comfort. Inside the spacious cab, ergonomically positioned controls improve operator productivity and comfort. A large high resolution/high contrast wide video graphics array color display features an antiglare shield and scratch-resistant coating for easy viewing in direct sunlight and improved durability. Color video of the work area behind the machine is captured by the standard rearview camera and shown on the monitor for easy viewing by the operator. Intuitive controls, including quick-access push buttons for frequently used functions, make for a short learning curve of MHL340 E handler operation, and the ergonomic multifunction button delivers effortless fingertip navigation through the display screens. The machine’s convenient stow-away ladder offers quick access to the engine, central lubrication system and large area platform of the upper carriage service deck. The large coolers for the engine and hydraulic system are lockable and readily accessed from ground level. Additional CAN Bus connections expand diagnostic capabilities, so service technicians can quickly identify and address underlying issues. Offering four-wheel drive, the Fuchs MHL340 handler has a 12.4 mph (20 kmh) maximum speed to quickly move around the yard, while its 27-degree steering angle helps to efficiently maneuver around obstructions. A double-row slewing ring design disperses forces over two rows of bearings to improve component service life and durability. Inverted hydraulic boom cylinder mounting and rigid hydraulic pipes located on the stick, boom and undercarriage offers superior protection against damage. Yahara Materials Meets Demand for Clear Stone Products
Unified’s “W” style clean screens are made of straight tension, Wshaped and custom cross wires.
Nick Cady, superintendent of operations at Yahara Materials.
Increasing production and maximizing throughput is nothing new. In fact, next to sizing accuracy, a recent survey shows that throughput is the second largest concern amongst producers, when surveyed to rank the factors most important when selecting screening media. But what happens when external factors such as market growth and adverse weather conditions impact your operation’s ability to meet the increasing demand and capture your market share? Here’s how one producer teamed with his local screening and crushing field specialist. Over the past 15 years, Yahara Materials located in Waunakee, Wisc., has experienced a dramatic increase in demand for clear stone products. These products are widely used for underground pipe and highway bedding to provide proper drainage. The product specifications required clean rock with minimal fines. Yahara Materials needed to find a way to increase its capacity to effec-

tively capture its share of this growing market. “We experienced a 15 percent increase in our production throughput,” Nick Cady stated. Yahara Materials operates seven 6 by 20, triple deck, portable crushing plants that were equipped with slotted, Tri-Lock screens. These slotted screens became very problematic when faced with ever-changing soil conditions found at various locations. Due to increased moisture content present during the winter and spring months they were unable to remove enough fines to get the product within specification. The slotted screens would blind over, halting production and minimizing throughput. Upon the evaluation and recommendation of Rod Skindrud, the local Unified Screening & Crushing Company field service representative, Nick Cady, superintendent of operations at Yahara Materials,
Portable crushing plant.
changed to a stainless steel “W” style screen on the lower two decks, while the top deck remained a hard drawn, high carbon square opening, Unified screen, for cost efficiency. This change greatly increased the flexibility of the screen and increased product flow. The “W” style screen is composed of straight tension wires, “W” shaped wires and custom cross wires. Three different wire sizes are used for a harmonic screening effect. This product allows greater open area and increases throughput with this “harmonic effect.” In addition, the “W” slots perform well during wet and difficult screening conditions. “Blinding and sizing problems can be eliminated. We have experienced a 15 percent increase to production since the change out to the “W”-slots and the “W” slot screens are lasting longer. They are lasting 2 to 3 times longer than anything we used in
this application, in the past,” according to Nick Cady. “The increase has allowed us to increase our capacity to capture our share of the growing demand for clear stone. Plus these clean screens have saved us an investment in a new Wash Plant for our concrete applications. Our production is up, throughput improved, especially in wet conditions, and we’ve saved an additional step in processing materials. It was a win-win decision.” Yahara Materials now uses “W” slotted screens on the bottom two decks of all its 6 by 20, Triple Deck plants. “We have not had to change them out all season,” said Cady. Contractor Range Extends JCB’s Hydraulic Breaker Line
JCB’s new line of Contractor breakers includes (L-R) the HM049T, HM033T and HM160T models.
JCB now offers double the number of hydraulic breakers designed to work with its range of excavators, backhoe loaders and compact equipment lines by launching its “Contractor Hammer Range.” Contractor breakers will be available alongside the existing professional line of hydraulic hammers. Both Professional and Contractor breakers will come with a three-year warranty. Contractor breakers offer the following features: • Complete range for 0.9 to 55 ton (0.8 to 50 t) carrier machines • Accumulators to protect carrier machinery from hydraulic pressure spikes • Models above 12.1 tons (11 t) carrier weight equipped with auto greasing systems • Two-speed control valves permit tool speed and stroke customization above 9.9 tons (9 t) • Internal control valves deliver 10 percent efficiency boost Contractor hydraulic hammers have been
specifically designed as a solution for customers working in less arduous conditions. They provide a genuine JCB product for users on a budget who still want a good quality hammer that’s highly productive. Each hammer has been extensively tested and matched to work perfectly with JCB carrier machines, according to the manufacturer. The range includes models from the compact HM012T that tips the scales at just 220.5 lbs. (100 kg) operating weight to suit compact excavators, to models designed to work with the largest JCB excavators currently offered in North America, which fall in to the 22-ton (20 t) category. All models come backed by a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. All Contractor breakers have accumulators to protect the carrier machine from hydraulic pressure spikes, reducing possible wear and tear on the hydraulic system. They also are equipped with auxiliary relief valves to protect the breaker from damage when used with other makes of machinery. Hammers for use with equipment above
12.1 tons in operating weight come as standard with a refillable auto greasing system, ensuring the breaker always receives the correct amount of lubrication throughout the working day. This cuts downtime and boosts productivity for the customer. All breakers feature dust seals to prevent dust ingress and to ensure that lubrication remains inside the hammer body. The heavier models include twin oval tool retaining pins, which deliver double the life of a standard pin, as they can be rotated to wear evenly on both sides. Smaller breakers are equipped with a single tool retainer. Twospeed control valves on models above 9.9 ton carrier weight allow the operator to customize tool speed and stroke length, dependent on the material that is being broken. This increases productivity and reduces the risk of damage to the breaker and the carrier, according to the manufacturer. Internal control valves deliver up to 10 percent higher efficiency against other products with external valves. This results in less maintenance as the oil flow is improved,
reducing heat build-up in the system and protecting internal seals. Heavier models also feature blank firing protection, further cutting the potential for damage to the breaker and wear to the carrier machine. Contractor breakers use a single scaled design with the same maintenance requirements for each model. This ensures that dealer and customer service staff, particularly in a rental operation, can easily work on all hammers in the range. All JCB Compact, Contractor and Professional breakers are delivered ready to work, with the correct mounting brackets and hydraulic hoses to match a wide range of JCB equipment. Compatibility is guaranteed, and the full hydraulic hammer range is backed by JCB’s service network. For more information, visit www.jcbna.com. Crushing, Screening Plant Offers Versatility, Portability The portable K300/6203CC is a highly-mobile crushing and screening plant designed to provide application versatility and serve as the perfect rental tool for producers in sand and gravel, quarry or recycle applications, according to the manufacturer. The K300/6203CC combines a heavy-duty, roller bearing Kodiak Plus K300+ cone crusher with a triple-shaft, low-profile horizontal screen. Its modular design offers flexibility for easily converting the plant to meet producer configuration requirements, resulting in a quick turnaround from order to delivery. Engineered with mobility in mind, the K300/6203CC has the axle configurations to fit all of your transportation requirements. In its closed-circuit configuration, the K300/6203CC allows producers to utilize a single chassis to produce up to three finished products or supplement existing demand in a small footprint, reducing the number of auxiliary conveyors required to get the job done. The closed-circuit plant also

offers the flexibility to convert to an open-circuit configuration by simply reversing the closed-circuit cross conveyor, according to Ian Pendergrass, product development manager of KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens. “The new modular design
allows customers to easily convert the plant to meet their needs,” Pendergrass said. “For our dealers, we offer the ability to mount either a K200+ or K300+ cone crusher to the same chassis with minimal cone mount modifications and switchgear considerations, provid-
ing added flexibility to their rental fleets.” Multiple axle configurations are available to meet portability needs, making it ideal for producers on the move. Several product discharge chutes or cross conveyor options also are available, as well
as feed conveyor and feed conveyor drive options. For more information, visit kpijci.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
