Kobelco Presents Construction Spending $120,000 to WWP Rises Modestly in April Kobelco Construction Machinery USA, a Houstonbased heavy equipment manufacturer, presented a check of nearly $120,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) on May 20 in Houston, Texas. Kobelco created only five limited edition SK350LC crawler excavators wrapped in a patriotic/military design as part of a fundraiser for WWP. Kobelco is donating $100,000 to this non-profit organization that supports a full range of programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families. At the recent ConExpo/ConAGG construction industry trade show in Las Vegas, Kobelco displayed one of the five limited edition SK350LC’s at its booth. Thousands of show attendees stopped by to have their picture taken with the awe-inspiring machine wrapped in patriotic graphics see KOBELCO page 62

of weakness,” said Ken Simonson, the association's chief economist. “While the overall trend remains more positive than last year, growth is likely to be spotty for the foreseeable future.” Construction put in place totaled $954 billion in April, 0.2 percent above the revised February total and 8.6 percent higher than in April 2013. The year-over-year growth so far in 2014 has exceeded the full-year increase of 5.0 percent recorded from 2012 to 2013. Private residential construction spending inched up 0.1 percent in April to a see SPENDING page 65

Work Begins in Preparation of Juneau SpanReplacement JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) Work has begun in preparation of construction of a new Mendenhall River bridge that will replace Juneau’s historic Brotherhood Bridge. Plans call for the old bridge to be removed and disposed of by the end of the year. The new, wider bridge that will replace it will be able to handle an expected 50 percent increase in traffic over the next 75 years, KTOO reported. The work currently being done involves steel pieces that are being driven into the river bottom for a trestle. The trestle will cross the river and serve as a platform for equipment used in constructing the replacement bridge, said Senior Project Manager John Smithson of Orion Marine Contractors. The half-century-old Brotherhood Bridge does not meet current code, state Department of Transportation Engineering Manager Greg Lockwood said. The pilings of the bridge, for example, go down only 45 ft. (13.7 m) into deposits that would be subject to liquefaction during a major earth-
quake. The pilings of the new bridge will go to the bedrock or as deep as 290 ft. (88 m). The $25.1 million project also is expected to improve pedestrian and vehicle traffic on a section of Glacier Highway. On the new bridge, each direction of travel will have two lanes. Also, the roadway on both sides of the bridge will be expanded, Lockwood said. Before the current bridge is removed in November, the upstream span of two lanes of the new bridge will be built to allow traffic to cross the river, Smithson said. The downstream side will be built after that. The project is expected to be finished by late October 2015. The Brotherhood Bridge had bronze medallions that were installed when the original bridge was dedicated in 1965. Those medallions have been recovered and will be installed in the handrail of the new bridge. Texas A&M University Travels From Classroom to Work Site A contingent of construction science majors from Texas A&M University travelled from the classroom to the work site and got a close-up look at one of the nation’s leading demolition and recycling operations. Cherry Companies of Houston, a member of the National Demolition Association (NDA)’s Construction Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), served as host to the aspiring demolition and construction industry professionals. “We have a great time exposing these students to the role that specialty contractors play in the construction industry,” said Leonard Cherry, president of Cherry Companies and past president of the National Demolition Association. The Texas A&M program works closely with the NDA to pique students’ interest in the many aspects of commercial construction work, including estimating, scheduling, project management and contract law. “The NDA is most interested in establishing relationships with schools like Texas A&M and our long-time ally, Purdue University, so that our members meet construction science students and vice versa,” said Kim Wieland, director of member services of the NDA. The NDA offers internship opportunities

to construction management majors interested in the field. Back at the Cherry Companies operation the 25 students travelled from College Station to Houston to view some of the latest demolition and recycling techniques. Cherry specializes in removing a variety of structures — from highways and bridges to industrial plants and commercial build-
ings — and instead of dumping debris in landfills, the companies recycles the vast majority of what it demolishes. Among the most commonly recycled materials are concrete, asphalt, steel, composition shingles and tires. Cherry’s recycling operation has made the company one of the largest recyclers in Texas and the Gulf Coast area, producing
collectively at all of its recycling centers more than two million tons of recycled, stabilized materials annually for use in everything from parking lots and underground utilities to pipeline support and storm sewers. The tour included a visit to the site of last year’s implosion of Houston’s Macy’s department store. There, a crew of more than 120 workers from various Cherry divisions had worked to coordinate all aspects of the 10-story building implosion. Workers were able to remove and recycle some 50,000 tons of material by the time the job was done. “I really appreciate getting to learn more about how demolition specialty contractors like Cherry work, because it gives me better insight about bringing these types of companies on future jobs,” said senior Blake Bell, who has already lined up a project manager job with Balfour Beatty, a global infrastructure services business. “And we’re glad to spread the word about how environmental stewardship is core to the mission of the NDA,” added NDA’s Wieland. products. A combination of classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory instruction and cooperative educational work experience at participating Komatsu dealerships, like General Equipment & Supplies Inc. and Road Machinery & Supplies Co., will provide students with extensive experience servicing Komatsu equipment. “We are pleased to add Komatsu to our reputable list of partners and value their contributions to this program,” said John Richman, NDSCS president. “With the recent completion of our $10.3 million diesel educational facility expansion, the time is right to add this highly technical Diesel Technology — Komatsu program.” The Diesel Technology — Komatsu program will be taught in Bisek Hall located in Wahpeton, N.D., beginning August 2014. Graduates of the program will earn an Associate in Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) designed to develop technically competent, professional service technicians. “NDSCS has been pivotal in making this partnership happen,” said Don Shilling, president of General Equipment & Supplies. “The need for highly educated diesel technicians continues to grow. In fact, we could easily hire a dozen technicians right now throughout our locations in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota.” Through scholarship assistance, program costs associated with tuition, fees and supplies may be reimbursed up to 90 percent depending on a student’s grade point average (GPA). “We are excited to have our first batch of students starting at General Equipment & Supplies Inc. to officially launch this program,” said Shilling. “We anticipate even more interest as our recruiters visit high schools throughout the region to share about this high-tech program.” For more information, call 800/342-4325 or visit www.ndscs.edu/komatsu. Atlas Copco Launches XATS Wacker Neuson Introduces 1050 Portable Compressor Vertical Mast Light Towers
The XATS 1050 produces 1050 cfm of free air delivery at an operating pressure of 150 psi, or 950 cfm at 200 psi. This dual rating system ensures flexibility for a range of applications.
Atlas Copco Portable Energy has announced the XATS 1050, a portable compressor that offers a flexible output with variable pressure and flow settings. The XATS 1050 produces 1,050 cfm of free air delivery at an operating pressure of 150 psi, or 950 cfm at 200 psi. This dual rating system ensures flexibility for a range of applications. It improves utilization rates and return on investment for the rental industry where application flexibility is paramount. Even though the XATS 1050 contains two ratings in one unit, it remains easy to use. The operator sets the pressure and the engine automatically responds with the appropriate airflow. The XATS 1050 features a new design that incorporates a spillage-free frame and a compact tandem axle enclosure to ensure maximum portability and flexibility at the job site. As an option, customers can select from a
John Deere 6090 or Cat C9.3 engine for compliance with Tier IV Final requirements for the North American market or Tier III for other locations. “The new XATS 1050 gives our customers with demanding jobs such as foundation drilling and industrial sandblasting the flexibility and power that they need for their daily operations,” said Robert Johnston, factory product manager, Atlas Copco Portable Energy. “This new model will shortly be joined by the XAS 1150, which incorporates the same benefits while producing 1150 cfm at 100 psi operating pressure.” The XATS 1050 will be available to order in the fourth quarter of 2014. For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Wacker Neuson is expanding its light tower line with the addition of two models designed for faster set-up time and easier operation. The LTN 6KV and LTN 8KV are trailer-mounted vertical mast light towers. The vertical mast is made of nine robust sections that can be easily raised and lowered in about 20 seconds by the push of a button. The hydraulically activated telescoping mast collapses while remaining in the vertical position, eliminating the tower overhang off the back of the trailer. This design decreases the total length of the unit, maximizing the number of machines that can fit on a standard shipping truck and in a rental storage space. The new LTN 6KV and LTN 8KV are narrow body light towers that are ideally suited whenever nighttime needs to be converted to daylight. The mast extends 28 ft. (8.5 m) and retracts to just 7 ft. (2.m), lowering the center of gravity, allowing for more balanced towing, and making the light fixtures more easily accessible to rotate. The mast is designed with pulleys on alternating sides, creating a very straight and sturdy tower during operation. The light bar rotates 360-degrees and holds four elliptical light fixtures with 1000 watt metal halide lamps that can be easily directed to offer increased job site illumination. The new light bar design also gives the user additional range of motion on all four light fixtures, allowing usage in reduced glare applications such as highway construction. Wacker Neuson light towers offer quiet operation with sound levels as low as 67 dB(A) at 23 ft. (7 m), which provides for maximum versatility for almost any application. A large, 32.5 gal. (123 L) fuel tank allows for continuous lighting/run time over several nights of operation without refueling. Four-point jack stands provide for easy leveling, stability on uneven terrain and superi-

or wind stability. Lockable full length, high impact polyethylene side doors are dent and rust proof and provide maximum accessibility for easy servicing and durability for any job site application, according to the manufacturers. The LTN 6KV and LTN 8KV utilize many of the same components that the current standard light towers use, including the same uni-body stamped frame, lights, ballasts, engines, and generators. The LTN 6KV is powered by a 13.1 Kubota diesel engine and offers a 6 kW generator. The LTN 8KV is powered by a 15.4 hp Kubota engine and offers an 8 kW generator. Like the standard light towers, the vertical mast light towers also give customers the flexibility to customize their light tower by choosing from an extensive list of factory installed options, including a cold weather package. REMAN Program...
Sullair Repairs, Replaces Portable Air Compressors Sullair, an industry leader on the forefront of innovative compressed air solutions since 1965, recently announced the nation-wide availability of its “REMAN” factory authorized remanufacturing program for Sullair 1600H AF and 900/1150X HH portable air compressors. Unlike a refurbishing program in which selected parts are repaired or replaced once they become unusable, the Sullair REMAN program provides a replacement for T2/T3 air compressors with a fully remanufactured Sullair air compressor that features the same factory warranty as a new unit. Once an exchange takes place, Sullair fully disassembles the used air compressor core and inspects, cleans and services all of its components. Only Genuine OEM parts are used in the process. Extensive testing is conducted, to ensure that the remanufactured unit meets the original specifications. Sullair initiated this program on a limited basis late last year with the 1600H AF
portable compressor. Today, the program is being rolled out on a nation-wide basis, and expanded to include the 900/1150X HH portable air compressor. “The early customers that have taken advantage of the REMAN program describe it as a win-win, because not only do they end up with a like-new air compressor and a same-as-new warranty, but they receive it quickly, which minimizes disruption to their work schedules,” said Rebecca O’Mara, senior director of business development, Sullair. “The program has been so successful that we’re now able to offer REMAN on a nation-wide basis.” Customers wanting to avoid the hassle of selling their old equipment, or hoping to extend the life of their rental fleets should contact Sullair to find out more about the REMAN program. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Sullair Portable Lines Utilize EPA Compliant Technology To meet the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier-IV standard, Sullair has redesigned its line of portable air compressors utilizing advanced emission control technology for compliance with these guidelines. Decreasing exhaust emissions and sulfur levels by as much as 99 percent, the new line of compressors offers a cleaner alternative to the older Tier-II or Tier-III products. Like all Sullair products, the new Tier-IV 1600 family of portable air compressors was designed for total accessibility and reliability, according to the manufacturer. With the goal of making dependable, quality products accessible at every level, Sullair also has the Sullair Certified REMAN Program. The REMAN program is a factory authorized remanufacturing program for Sullair 1600H AF portable air compressors, featuring genuine OEM parts. Unlike a refurbishing program in which parts are only replaced once they become unusable, the REMAN program begins with a fully disassembled Sullair used air compressor core and requires each component to undergo a thorough inspection process.
Following inspection, parts are cleaned, serviced or replaced to ensure that each component meets the same high standards as new Sullair products. As a result, Sullair Certified REMAN compressors perform like new, and come with the same factory warranty as a new Sullair air compressor. “Customers wanting to avoid the hassle of selling their old machinery or hoping to extend the life of their rental fleets can now consider our new REMAN program as an economically savvy option,” said CarrieAnn Flank, general manager-portables of Sullair. “Certified REMAN compressors run like new and help our customers avoid rental revenue loss with less downtime.” Flank also emphasized that REMAN air compressors undergo the same rigorous testing and quality control as new Sullair air compressors, and “eliminate the need for additional service technicians or end user training on new Tier-IV machines.” For more information, call 219/879-5451 or visit www.sullair.com. Construction isn’t the first thing you think of when in Manhattan Beach, but when you do, you think of Casner Construction. “The term ‘Casner Quality’ is synonymous with high-end residential quality in the South Bay area,” said Art Jurado, sales consultant of Sonsray Machinery in southern California. “People ask for Casner homes by name because they know each home is crafted with care and built to the highest of standards while also offering a distinct California style.” When a Casner home goes on the market, the offers come in quickly — and often above asking price as bidding wars ensue. “Usually within a day or two, I have anywhere from three to 10 offers on the house,” said Craig Casner, who has been in the homebuilding business in southern California since the 1960s. He earned his license in 1974, and his two sons, Jeremy and Josh (licensed in 2000) now work in the family business and carry on the “Casner Quality” legacy. With his homes in high demand, Casner places emphasis on being a good neighbor, and completing as much of the heavy earthwork required for each new home as quickly and efficiently as possible. With that in mind, the company added a new Case 1121F wheel loader to its fleet in 2013, and the results have been encouraging. “The last job we did here in Hermosa Beach, we had to export 500 or 600 yards,” said Jeremy Casner. “It was a hillside job. The cut of the grade had to be flat with the street in about 80 feet, so we had some 10-foot verticals. This machine hogged the dirt out faster than any other machine I've ever seen.” Big Production on Small Sites While it is the second-largest wheel loader available from Case and Sonsray, the 1121F fits nicely into the sitework performed by Casner. As the company began

looking for a new wheel loader, size, speed and power were important. The 1121F weighs in at 59,191 lbs. (26,849 kg) and offers 320 hp (net) and 56,310 lbs. (25,541 kg) of breakout force. Casner outfitted this machine with a 6 cu. yd. (4.6 cu m) bucket and added radial tires and heavy-duty axles for greater traction and more robust lifting capabilities. The added strength and power were required as the earthmoving here is rarely a day at the beach. “Some jobs you encounter clay or adobe material, the more expansive soil, very dense, very heavy, very wet,” said Jeremy. “It’s definitely more difficult to work in and you definitely need a heavier-duty machine to work in that material.” “We have jobs like these where we have to move thousands of yards of dirt, and a backhoe will do it but it does it in a lot more time than this (wheel loader),” said Craig. “My son Jeremy is into grading, demolition, dirt hauling and dirt moving, and this machine just does the job three- or fourtimes as fast as using a backhoe.” “The power, the strength of the torque, the breakout power that the machine has as far as hogging into a hillside and going into stockpiles to load trucks, it kills it,” said Jeremy. “I've been an equipment operator for probably 15 years on and off. I ran scrapers, I ran excavators, I ran wheel loaders and this machine by far blows those other pieces of equipment out of the water.”
Tier IV Engine Technology Reduces Emissions, Noise and Maintenance Part of being a good working neighbor in these tight-knit oceanside communities is bringing ecologically friendly equipment to the jobsite. California is at the forefront of emissions regulations, and the 1121F fits in nicely. The machine uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet Tier IV regulations in reducing NOx and particulate matter (pm) emissions. “The older machines that are belching out giant clouds of black smoke are not really friendly to the neighbors or the area,” said Craig. “That equipment has slowly been (replaced) for newer pieces of machinery like this loader, and these new ones are completely environment-friendly.” SCR is well suited for wheel loaders because it’s an after-treatment system that let’s the engine do what it’s designed to do: generate power at varied engine loads. The technology, which has been accepted for several years for onhighway diesel applications throughout North America and Europe, also doesn’t require the use of regeneration to burn off accumulated particulate for faster throttle response time. The end result is full power and breakout force when needed. Additionally, SCR engines are optimized to create an efficient combustion process. The technology can actu-
100 ft. (30.5 by 30.5 m) lot. Although the job site was small, Jeremy said the 1121F is a safe performer in tight quarters. Key to those efforts is visibility. “The cab of the machine is very open, very spacious, glass from ceiling to floor,” he said. “You can see the ground really well, you can see on both sides of the machine, you can see between the front wheels and the bucket when the bucket’s in the air. When you put it in reverse, the backup camera comes on. You can see what’s behind the machine, if anyone’s back there. When you are backing up, you know when you are getting close to something.” A new, wide-angle lens provides optimal visibility to the rear of the machine through the back-up camera. The wheel loader also features the lowest and narrowest rear hood in the industry. “Overall, the visibility is very good.” An Excellent Partner Casner worked together with Sonsray Machinery’s Santa Fe Springs branch to select Casner Construction works entirely in and spec out the 1121F. residential neighborhoods — factors With the assistance of such as noise and emissions are top of sales consultant Art mind when the company begins work on Jurado and the backing a new site. of the company’s servally improve performance because ice department, Craig knows he the engines breathe more freely, has a partner in helping him optiwhich in turn, results in significant mize uptime and productivity. fuel savings. “I have a great relationship with The machine also helps reduce Art going back to the 1980s,” he another byproduct that is particu- said. “I’ve always had great deals larly sensitive to working in resi- with him. Wheeler Machinery Bulldozes Poverty This past April, a group of Wheeler employees journeyed to the Altiplano region of Bolivia to serve the remote Andean village of Alto Peñas located roughly 13,500 ft. (4,115 m) above sea level. During the week-long expedition, a water system more than 3 mi. (5 km) long was constructed. Wheeler’s expedition team worked alongside villagers to dig trenches and connect, place and bury the water pipes. The water system, benefitting 80 families, will improve health conditions and personal hygiene as well as decrease the infant mortality rate. CHOICE Humanitarian works with motivated villages to connect them to resources and tools to break the cycle of poverty. As a community, Alto Peñas came together and decided water was its top priority. A village committee was formed to oversee the execution of the water project and ensure problems would be fixed if they were to arise. Prior to the arrival of Wheeler’s expedition team, the village laid the ground work for the project including digging portions of the trenches and securing pipes and other supplies. Without a water project, Alto Peñas had no access to clean drinking water. Villagers drank nonpotable water from springs and handmade wells often contaminated by latrines. While in Bolivia, the expedition team had the opportunity to visit a dairy cooperative processing plant that Wheeler’s dollars are helping to fund. The team also visited a local school and participated in a water project dedication at a neighboring village. Since then, $280,124 has been raised via Wheeler employee payroll contributions and a generous 2-to-1 company match. Wheeler will continue to send a group of employees on a humanitarian expedition each year throughout its partnership with CHOICE provided the annual goal of raising $50,000 is met. “I applaud Wheeler Machinery for their commitment to end poverty in our back yard and abroad. Wheeler Machinery Co. employees are part of the corporate movement to create lasting impact for those living on less than two dollars a day. I’m humbled and inspired to partner with such a forward thinking company,” said Leah Barker, CEO of CHOICE Humanitarian. For more information, visit www.wheelercat.com/bolivia. Realigning, Regrading Eastbound Approach Work Remains TUNNEL from page 1
Before the fourth bore opened to traffic late last year, these motorists had to merge from four freeway lanes into two tunnel lanes. This would cause considerable delays. Since the fourth bore opened to traffic, Caltrans has been able to dedicate two tunnel lanes permanently in each direction. This has also added a lot more predictability to the daily commute.” Prior to the tunnel opening, Caltrans and project partners had worked closely with the California State Fire Marshal and emergency service and response agencies to develop an Emergency Response Plan outlining emergency scenarios in the fourth bore — ranging from a stalled vehicle to a 100 mW fire (of the same magnitude as the tragic 1982 fire in third bore of the Caldecott Tunnel.) The tunnel’s fire and life safety systems, as well as tunnel operators and emergency response crews, were put to the test in acting out the emergency scenarios through a series of fire drills prior to the tunnel opening. With the successful completion of the fire drills, the State Fire Marshal commissioned the Caldecott Fourth Bore on Nov. 15, and it was opened to traffic at about 4:25 a.m. on Nov. 16. The remaining work currently underway in the median and approaches on the western side of the tunnel is keeping construction crews busy. This work is currently focused on realigning and regrading the eastbound approach to bore #2, which had been designed for both east and westbound traffic before the fourth bore opened. “To minimize impacts to traffic on state Route 24, and with public and worker safety considerations as our highest priority, much of this work must be performed at night,” said Morrison. The median work entails the removal of the k-rail; installation of about 3,000 ft. (900 m) of permanent concrete barrier rail in the median — between bores three and two; and the paving of the shoulders on both sides of the new barrier. Work also has commenced on the east side of the tunnel. The realignment of the eastbound approach to bore #2 and nighttime
Mining the tunnel led to approximately 350,000 tons (317,515 t) of earth, rock and other materials (spoils) being removed from the site.
Crews began work on Jan. 13, 2010 for the $417 million project to construct a fourth bore (tunnel) for the Caldecott Tunnel, which is expected to open for traffic in mid-November.
bore 2 closures are expected to be done over the summer. “We’ll be improving the existing approach to bore #2 by re-grading and straightening it,” said Morrison, “but to complete the eastbound realignment work for bores 1 and 2, it is anticipated that Caltrans will close bore #2 during night-time hours for several months.” It is all a question of managing traffic and to accommodate the realignment work for bore #2, the lanes approaching bore #1 will be temporarily shifted to the south where there is a wide shoulder. “The temporary lane realignment approaching bore #1 is clearly delineated,” said Morrison. “Work entails the demolition of the existing barrier rail between bores 1 and 2, followed by the construction of permanent concrete barriers and the repaving of the approach. The public has appreciated our efforts to construct the fourth bore and has been very helpful and patient in ensuring that we can do the work efficiently and rapidly and safely.” A variety of standard excavators, backhoes, compactors, and pavers are being used to complete the remaining work. The completion of the tunnel was in many ways a Herculean task that brought together many elements and technologies and required many innovative solutions. Crews began work on Jan. 13, 2010 for the $417 million project to construct a fourth bore (tunnel) for the Caldecott Tunnel. The completed project should be delivered in fall 2014 after four years of hard and intense efforts to cut through some very solid and tough rock. The 3,389-ft. (1,033 m) tunnel cuts through the Berkeley Hills in the East Bay to provide an additional link between Oakland and Orinda (Alameda and Contra Costa counties). The project, put forward by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and the Alameda County Transportation Commission, is funded by the federal government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (45 percent) and Contra Costa Measure J funds (30 percent).
The goal of the project is to relieve westward traffic congestion during off-peak hours for motorists traveling on SR 24. The horseshoeshaped tunnel, 50 ft. (15 m) in diameter, was mined by the sequential excavation method (SEM) or better known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). When complete it will provide two 12 ft. (3.7 m) lanes, a 10 ft. (3 m) shoulder on the north side and a 2 ft (.6 m) shoulder with a 3 ft. (.9 m) walkway on the south side. Tunneling operations on the east side began in August 2010, while it began in February 2011 for the west side. Crews working on the top heading met when the initial breakthrough took place on Nov. 29, 2011. The project is being undertaken by Tutor Saliba Corporation, a subsidiary of Tutor Perini Corporation, which is employing 40 subcontractors, including Drill Tech Drilling & Shoring Inc., FoxFire Constructors Inc., Gordon N. Ball Inc., Harris Salinas Rebar Inc., Johnson Western Gunite Co., Roadway Engineering Works Inc., and Wisko America Inc. At peak, with crews working day and night, there were approximately 200 workers on site. “The initial support for the tunnel consisted of fiber reinforced shotcrete, spiles, rockbolts and lattice girders,” said Patrick Jennings, project manager of Tutor Saliba. “After the initial support, a smoothing shotcrete layer and waterproofing was installed. The final fifteen inches reinforced concrete liner was then placed. Sidewalks, electrical, drainage, metal panels on the sidewalls, ventilation systems and a two lane concrete roadway follow the final lining.” The fourth bore parallels three existing tunnels and interconnects with the third tunnel via seven cross passages. The project also includes construction of a new 6,000 sq. ft. (1,829 sq m) Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) building — the existing maintenance building had to be demolished first), new retaining walls and roadway approaches on the east and west sides of the tunnel (54,000 sq. ft. [5,017 sq m]), see TUNNEL page 60

the field, and that experience translates to alternative-fuel systems that work hard for our customers.” The identical mixer vehicles are a fiveaxle configuration, outfitted with an 11-cu. yd. McNeilus drum and Bridgemaster tag axle. Each of the trucks features a 60 diesel
gallon equivalent (DGE) fuel tank, an automatic transmission, an anti-roll stability system, and wireless mixer controls. Engineered with both the operator and the service team in mind, the McNeilus NGEN CNG system is designed for the rugged ready-mix concrete environment. The plumbing system is built with CNC-formed high-pressure lines, compression fittings, and fewer connection points to deliver more consistent and reliable fuel flow. The lightweight, natural gas vehicle (NGV) Type 4 tanks and long-lasting fuel storage pods feature all-aluminum tank covers. The fuel control module is designed for either fast-filling or time-filling to fit customer preferences. Argos USA employs more than 2,300 people at its offices and 238 concrete plant locations, three cement plants and grinding stations, and 10 cement terminals. These facilities are located in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. Solutions Offered for Inadequate Density Problems PAVEMENT from page 47
One MTV manufacturer, Roadtec, offers a solution — its uniform remixing auger. The antisegregation auger employs three different pitches that get progressively bigger towards the center of the MTV. This triple-pitch flighting allows for additional material to enter the auger area each time the pitch is increased resulting in thorough remixing. Additionally, the Roadtec MTV1000 material transfer vehicle offers another innovation — an offset gravity transfer, which is designed to provide reblending of asphalt materials just before they are delivered to the paver, which is engineered to eliminate truck-end segregation and allow for continuous in-line paving. The Roadtec MTVs also have optional windrow attachments that can pick up material from the windrow and deliver it to the paver properly mixed and at the right temperature through its process. Roadtec invented the concept of material transfer vehicles in 1989
Roadtec has two versions of Shuttle Buggy MTV’s.
and currently offers three asphalt remixing devices, representing three different sizes: the SB2500e/ex shuttle buggy MTV, the SB-1500 shuttle buggy MTV, and the MTV-1000 material transfer vehicle. The SB-2500e/ex features a 25-ton (22.7 t) surge capacity and weighs 78,000 lbs. (35,380 kg). The SB-1500 can store up to 15 tons (13.6 t) of asphalt mix and weighs 62,500 lbs. (28,350 kg). And the smaller MTV-1000
weighs 50,000 lbs. (22,680 kg) and can handle up to 10 tons (9 t) of asphalt mix. The Roadtec SB-2500e/ex has recently received what the company refers to as upgrades, which include the addition of bindicators, devices which show the paving crew exactly how much mix remains in the hopper, a Tier IV diesel engine for North America, enhanced conveyor wear resistance, which is intended to lower
operating costs, an adjustable width front hopper to make it compatible with truck widths commonly used in countries outside the United States, and the machine’s dual operator stations can now slide sideways past the outer edge of the main frame, which is deigned to improve visibility. Back in the 1980’s, Roadtec engineers had been inspired by pavement failure studies that had been conducted and which showed the significant causes were material segregation. The company’s R&D staff looked at HMA at job sites with infrared camera and saw dramatic temperature differential in the mix, even when haul distances were short. The research showed that non-uniform compaction, raveling and stripping could be directly traced back to the temperature differential. There are two technical papers researched and written by Roadtec technical staff entitled “Segregation: Causes and Cures” and “Temperature S e g r e g a t i o n / Te m p e r a t u r e Differential Damage.” The docu-
ments can be found as free downloads on the Roadtec Web site as part of the product information on the SB-2500e/ex shuttle buggy MTV. The original concept of the MTV still holds today, as it did 25 years ago: a machine to “shuttle” HMA between the haul truck and the paver in order to provide an uninterrupted supply to keep the paver productive. The ability to have nonstop paving can reduce problems of temperature differentials and aggregate segregation, thus leading to a much smoother, more durable finished paved surface. The emergence of both the windrow elevator MTV and the surge volume/remixing MTV are clearly benefiting paving contractors as they pursue smooth, durable paved surfaces that meet the stringent quality standards that they face today. The candidates for the top rollouts award were judged on the following categories: industry significance, ingenuity, filling of a market need and/or an eye-catching product.
Chicago Pneumatic Construction Equipment was awarded the Better Roads 2013 Best New Products Top Rollouts for its AR90G small articulated tandem asphalt roller. Better Roads receives hundreds of applications each year for the award and picks 25 products that stuck out the most to the editors of the magazine. The candidates for the top rollouts award were judged on the following categories: industry significance, ingenuity, filling of a market need and/or an eye-catching product. The AR90G is part of a complete line of compact asphalt rollers and soil compactors entering the United States in 2013 and offers a larger-scale complement to the popular line of Chicago Pneumatic light compaction line. “We are very excited the AR90G asphalt roller received the award for one of the 2013 top rollouts,” said John Vogel, executive vice president of Chicago Pneumatic Construction Equipment. “It’s a product we are very proud of and thrilled that a publica-
tion like Better Roads thinks so highly of it, as well.” The gasoline-powered AR90G features vibration on the front drum, with drive on both the front and rear drums. Utilized primarily for small-scale compaction work like patching, bicycle paths, small parking lots, and driveways, the articulated tandem asphalt rollers are designed for easy transport and operator usability. The entire line of newly released rollers to the North American marketplace is engineered with operator comfort in mind, featuring spacious platforms, and ergonomically positioned steps. Shock mounts and a sliding operator seat also comes standard on the roller models. The sleek, legible instrument panel includes a warning panel and a fuel gauge to reduce incidents on the job site. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! Caltrans Dedicates Two Tunnel Lanes in Each Direction TUNNEL from page 46
and a berm and permanent sound wall on the west side. The tunnel, primarily mined with a 130 ton (118 t) Wirth heavy duty roadheader (Type T3.20) at the east heading, was completed on Sept. 21, 2012. The tunnel’s waterproof membrane, rebar cage, and final lining were installed from west to east. Mining the tunnel led to approximately 350,000 tons (317,515 t) of earth, rock and other materials (spoils) being removed from the site. This was shipped to Treasure Island and much will be recycled for use in future projects. “Working under a gassy tunnel environment was a challenge,” said Bill Monahan, Tutor Saliba’s tunnel superintendent. “This required significant expenditures in adapting equipment for this condition. The top heading of the tunnel was mined completely through using roadheaders, followed by simultaneous bench excavation from both the west and east ends. Another challenge was the incor-
poration of microfibers in the concrete final liner mix, which reduced the ability to pump this concrete over long distances. The concrete final liner was placed in 50-foot segments using an EFCO tunnel form with a traveler on rails. “The NATM is a process of sequential excavation in which the length of the excavated section is based on the surrounding geology,” he continued. “The rock is assessed on a scale of one through four, with one being the hardest rock. The harder the rock, the farther the workers can tunnel before installing supports.” Crews have made solid progress and the tunnel is scheduled to open to motorists on the weekend of Nov. 16 according to Caltrans. This means that motorists taking Highway 24 via the East Bay Hills will have the choice of using two tunnels (four lanes in each direction). Once the roadway and tunnel walls are completed, the closing phase will have TPC crews finish the road-striping, link the new tunnel to the highway, and remove the

including the American flag, silhouettes of soldiers and logos from all five-armed force divisions. The bucket of the crawler excavator collected $19,317.75 in donations from booth visitors, creating a total donation to the WWP of $119,317.75. A long-time supporter of the U.S. military, Kobelco was pleased to make this presentation to the WWP. “We can’t thank the ConExpo/ConAGG attendees enough for helping us with our WWP fundraiser,” said Ron Hargrave, vice president of operations of Kobelco Construction Machinery USA. “Kobelco cares about our injured military members and their families, and has really enjoyed this opportunity to give something back to those men and women who sacrificed their lives to make ours safer.”

A Personal Journey to Heal Himself — and Others
John Roberts (L), Houston Chapter of the Wounded Warrior Project, presents a plaque of thanks to Kobelco Construction Machinery USA’s President Pete Morita.
“We are continuously humbled by the generous support of so many businesses and individual Americans who raise money on our behalf,” said Lolita Jerido, community events manager, Wounded Warrior Project. “Thank you, Kobelco, for creating such a unique event that not only celebrated the five branches of our armed forces, but also raised money that is fueling life-saving programs for our nation’s heroes. You are truly making a difference in the lives of many.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
Wounded Warrior Relations Executive Vice President John Roberts of Houston, Texas, accepted the $119,317.75 donation check presented to the Wounded Warrior Project by Kobelco Construction Machinery USA. Roberts, himself a wounded veteran, knows just how lifechanging a donation like this can be. In March 1992, while on deployment with the Marine Corps, his CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter experienced a complete engine malfunction off the coast of Somalia and exploded in mid-flight. There were 18 Marines onboard; four were killed. Roberts survived the crash but had third degree burns over 80 percent of his body and nearly lost his right arm. He was sent to Brookes Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where he spent more than a year recovering, not only physically, but also mentally. Like so many of the wounded warriors of today, Roberts had begun to experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD as it’s commonly called, and started self-medicating with alcohol. If it had not been for a fellow Marine who offered to help him, Roberts might not be here today, he said. With the support of this fellow Marine, Roberts began a new mission to assist his fellow veterans and in 2003, the Department of Veterans Affairs sent him to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he spent six months helping injured service members and their families to obtain their VA benefits. Roberts had found his new passion and mission in life — he would do everything he could to take care of the newest generation of wounded warriors. That led him to the Wounded Warrior Project. One of Roberts’s proudest achievements so far with the WWP has been the development of a mental health program for the Wounded Warriors Project where the participants feel safe talking about their problems and challenges with their peers. As for his own healing, Roberts has come a long way, and while his physical scars are are only noticeable if you look hard, his emotional healing is very apparent. “When you
have third degree burns over 80 percent of your body, you can get one hell of a facelift!” he said. With his sense of humor still intact, Roberts said he is a much better person now than he was before he was injured. Roberts said every day he is living the logo of the Wounded Warrior Project, which is one warrior helping another warrior. The Wounded Warrior Project was formed in 2001 because its founders saw that many of the needs of returning wounded service members were not being met. The founders decided that the WWP would be a different kind of veterans’ charity in that the organization would not accept government funding and would remain true to the mission of “honoring and empowering wounded warriors.” The Wounded Warrior Project relies solely on the American public to stand behind it and to support the 20 different programs and services, such as Project Odyssey, TRACK, and the Transitional Training Academy. These programs are designed to meet the growing needs of this newest generation of wounded warriors. According to Roberts and the WWP, without the generosity of the American public and companies like Kobelco, these wounded warriors would simply “fall through the cracks” and become just another statistic. They would not be able to reach their goal of ensuring that this is the most well-adjusted generation of wounded warriors in our nation’s history. The Wounded Warrior Project’s holistic approach to service includes not only the warrior, but his or her family as well. The services encompass the mind, body, economic empowerment and engagement. Without addressing all of these areas, the wounded warrior will be less likely to fully recover and will have a harder time adjusting to his or her “new normal,” according to the organization. Roberts joined the United States Marine Corps in 1982 at the age of 17. He was medically discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1996 with 14 years of service as a combat platoon sergeant. Roberts has been with the Wounded Warrior Project for eight years. He and his family live in the Houston, Texas, area.

six-year high. The latest total exceeded the year-ago level by 17 percent. Single-family construction rose 1.3 percent in April and 14 percent year-over-year. Multifamily spending soared 4.4 percent and 31 percent, respectively. Improvements to existing single- and multifamily structures slumped 2.2 percent for the month but increased 17 percent from a year ago. Private nonresidential spending dipped 0.1 percent in April but climbed 5.6 percent over 12 months. Most major categories increased from year-ago levels. However, the largest private segment, power construction — comprising work on oil and gas fields and pipelines as well as electricity projects — slipped 0.6 percent for the month and 3.9 percent over the year. The fastestgrowing private type was office construction, which jumped 3.1 percent in April and 26 percent since April 2013. Public construction spending rose 0.8 percent for the month and 1.2 percent year-overyear. The largest public segment, highway and street construction, declined 1.1 percent
in April but increased 4.9 percent from a year before. The second-biggest category, educational construction, gained 3.0 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively. “The outlook for the rest of 2014 remains uneven,” Simonson predicted. “Demand for apartments appears to be very strong, but there are several warning signs about homebuilding. Despite dropping last month, power and manufacturing construction should remain the leading private nonresidential categories, with hefty growth for the year as a whole. The rebound in public construction that occurred last month may not be repeated soon.” Association officials said that public investments in highway and street construction will decline significantly unless Congress and the Obama administration act before July to shore up the Federal Highway Trust Fund. Current estimates indicate the fund will run out of money by July, likely putting a halt to federal spending on surface transportation projects across the country.
