Industry Responds to Okla. Tornado Recovery By Jennifer Hetrick CEG CORRESPONDENT
Customer’s Input Used to Improve Iron…10
Weeks after an unrelenting EF5 tornado snatched Moore, Okla., into the sky and viciously slammed it back to earth, the cleanup continues steadily and the hope of rebuilding and restoring remains a far-off, but stoutly believed in, dream. This storm, which hit on May 20, touched down at 2:45 p.m. and stayed on the ground for 20 minutes during which it released 200-mph-plus winds on a 17mi. (27 km) long, 1.3-mi. (2.1 km) wide path. The storm claimed 24 lives, caused count-

The industry responded, as it always does, marshaling equipment and operators and finding transport to places that need help.
less injuries and, since it was a spring storm, left untold numbers of orphaned newly born wildlife scattered. The destruction numbers in terms of buildings and property are currently at 4,000 homes and businesses, including the complete destruction of Plaza Towers Elementary School, where students and teachers were trapped for hours in the debris. Initial estimates put the damage to Moore at $2 billion. Moore, however, has not been the only target of the particularly venomous storm season Oklahoma has experienced so far this year. On May 19 at 6 p.m. and lasting until 6:50 p.m. an EF4 tornado with winds up to 200 mph cut a 20-mi. (32 km) long, 1.2-mi. (1.9 km) wide path through the towns of Shawnee, Pecan Valley, McCloud and Little Axe. A third storm, known as the El Reno tornado, another EF5 incident, touched down on May 31 at 6:03 p.m. and lasted until 6:43 p.m., tearing a path that was 16.2 mi. (26 km) long and
Working as they do with The Weather Channel, the Team was able to position itself just out of range of the accurately forecasted Moore tornado and thus was poised to be on the scene at Plaza Towers Elementary School within two hours of when the storm hit. Weeks after the storm, the team has stayed with Moore, in an effort to help the town move toward recovery.

Equal numbers of states gained and lost construction jobs in June, highlighting the fragmentary nature of the industry’s recovery, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data. Association officials added that, despite the fact most states added jobs year-over-year, construction employment levels are below peak levels for nearly every state. “Job gains and losses were quite different last month from the patterns in the past several years as some lagging states — notably Nevada — added workers, while former high-flyers such as Texas, had layoffs,” said Ken Simonson, the
association’s chief economist. “On a year-overyear basis, construction employment has increased in more than two-thirds of the states, but nearly all states lag their pre-recession peaks for construction jobs.” In June, 23 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs, while 24 states shed them. Nevada had the largest one-month percentage increase (5.0 percent, 2,500 jobs), followed by North Dakota (4.2 percent, 1,300) and Iowa (4.0 percent, 2,600). Illinois added the most jobs in June (5,400, 3.0 percent), followed by Washington (4,100, 2.9 percent), Iowa and see JOBS page 48
The American Rental Association (ARA), applauded the action of a bipartisan group of members of Congress to highlight the six month countdown to repeal a tax that will have a damaging effect on small businesses in the equipment rental industry and beyond. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Rep. Charles Boustany (RLa.) and Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) see ARA page 30

The $52,000 cost differential between the hybrid and conventional units is expected to be paid back to such a customer in fuel savings and productivity during four years or less of operation.
Deere & Co. prides itself on introducing equipment that the company says is first vetted by Deere customers. This “customer advocacy group” process was cited again earlier this year in the introduction of E-Series skid steer and compact track loader models and the 644K Hybrid wheel loader. Speaking at a February introduction of the new skid steers and compact loaders, Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager of Deere’s Construction & Forestry machinery, said, “We asked hundreds of customers how we could make this equipment better. They told us, and we responded.” At a June media event near Moline, Sam Norwood, manager of commercial worksite products, further explained the process. Norwood said it begins with customer conversations to “capture needs” of the actual users of machinery, followed by surveys and focus groups built on the conversations. Indexator Provides JRB Construction Utility Forks Turn Grapple Options for Wheel Loaders Into Heavy-Duty Forklifts Precise Handling JRB construction utility forks by Paladin Attachments turn wheel loaders into versatile heavy-duty forklifts to safely transport large loads of construction-related materials. Drop-forged, fixed tines provide increased sturdiness and reduce material movement while it is being transported over uneven terrain. Available with manual or hydraulically actuated tine adjustments, JRB construction utility forks are built to carry load capacities up to 67,500 lbs. (30,617 kg) to meet virtually any heavy-duty material transport job requirement, while the optional hydraulic side shift and rotation allows for precise placement of material, according to the manufacturer. JRB construction utility forks are designed with carriage widths ranging from 60 to 120 in. (152 to 305 cm). Tine lengths range from 48 to 96 in. (122 to 244 cm) and are available in widths of 4 to 8 in. (10 to 20 cm) by thicknesses of 1.25 to 4 in. (3 to 10 cm). Load capacities are rated beyond wheel loader lift capacities and are based on a

Leading Edge Attachments Offers Newer ‘Stag’ Bucket Leading Edge Attachments Inc. now offers a newer version of the “Stag” bucket, which is a new style, high penetration bucket utilizing the “staggered tooth” technology, and is designed for excavators allowing the operator to easily dig compacted soils, coral, shale, caliche, stratified materials, shot rock or frozen ground with higher concentrated breakout force for a price that is lower than the multi-ripper bucket. The stag bucket design allows the operator to focus the excavator’s full breakout force on one tooth at a time because the front leading edge is stepped and angled. This new version positions the first tooth closer to the center of the bucket, each successive tooth alternating back and forth so that each tooth hits the material sequentially. This staggered effect focuses the bucket breakout force on one tooth at a time. Creating flat trench bottoms is easy with this new bucket also because the teeth are on the same plane, similar to a conventional bucket.
Conventional buckets have the teeth mounted on an edge that so that all of the teeth engage the material at the same time, thus sharing the load and decreasing the tooth breakout force. The LEA stag bucket creates high penetration due to the fact that one tooth is engaging at a time thus saving energy and increasing performance, while still being able to shave the bottom of a trench flat similar to a conventional bucket, according to the manufacturer. The new stag bucket is manufactured in the USA using T1 alloy steel. Angled edge configurations are available that have one of the corner teeth penetrating first, but the teeth are still staggered. It is available for any excavator from 11,000 to 220,000 lbs. (4,985 to 99,790 kg). For more information, call 866/9285800 or visit www.leadingedgeattachments.com. Donated Equipment Played Role in Search for Survivors TORNADO from page 1
2.6 mi. (4.2 km) wide through the towns of Union City, Mustang and Yukon, earning the distinction of being the widest tornado on record in the United States. All of these devastated towns have been under the care of The First Response Team of America, a group of first responders dedicated to helping in the first crucial hours and weeks after a natural disaster. The team embraces several roles, one of which is using heavy equipment to clear what are all too frequently nearly unrecognizable roads so that all other first responders get to where they need to be as quickly as possible. Another, emotionally difficult role the team uses the equipment for is meticulously lifting pieces from devastated buildings where people are believed to be trapped. The team also has water rescue equipment and thermal cameras that can detect body heat, so they often are members of search and rescue teams themselves in addition to handling heavy equipment. Weeks after the storm, the team has stayed with Moore, in an effort to help the town move toward recovery. Working as they do with The Weather Channel, the team was able to position itself just out of range of the accurately forecasted Moore tornado and thus was poised to be on the scene at Plaza Towers Elementary School within two hours of when the storm hit. The passable roads were jammed with cars and pedestrians leaving the area so police escort was called to take the team to what was left of the school. Search and rescue workers were already on site and needed more paths cleared in the debris to reach what they hoped would be survivors. With more than a million dollars worth of equipment, much of which had been previously donated by RAM, Caterpillar, The Pete Store, Ledwell Trailer, Allmand Light Tower and Lincoln Electric, the well-practiced team quickly set up and began the painstaking, heartbreaking work. The founder of First Response Team of America, Tad Agoglia’s voice is steady as he speaks of his experience at Plaza Towers, but the compassion and grief are there nonetheless.
“Working at that school, using our equipment to lift off the rubble where we thought there might be young kids trapped. That was, seeing all those desks in the rubble…. We’ve been to about 50 disaster sites helping out but this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Agoglia said. “We helped with search and rescue using our Prentice loader crane mounted on a 367 Peterbilt truck, our Allmand Night-Light Pro — II V Series light tower, Caterpillar 299 multi-terrain loader and Tomahawk Lincoln Electric plasma cutter donated by The Pete Store, Caterpillar, Lincoln Electric and Allmand Crane, plasma cutter, light towers and compact track loader,” Agoglia said. “Then we went on to general search and rescue in the community using our

night vision and infrared rubble cameras. Then onto clearing roads and home sites, which is what we are doing now with the help of the local Caterpillar dealer Warren CAT, who provided a Caterpillar 420 backhoe and 246 skid steer, allowing the team to perform dozens of home demoes at no cost to the homeowners of Moore, Oklahoma City, Shawnee, El Reno and other surrounding towns affected by the disasters on May 19, 20 and 31.” The construction community is always ready to step up during disasters, something which people outside the industry might not focus on in the midst of tragedy. But disaster, whether the recent
natural wrath of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast, or manmade horror as on 9/11, offers the industry a unique way to help, and the industry always does, marshaling equipment and operators and finding transport to places that need help. The violent tornados in Oklahoma are no exception. Agoglia emphasized his thanks to Warren CAT, with sixteen locations in Texas and Oklahoma, a neighbor to many affected by the tornadoes that was quick to reach out to First Response Team with donated use of several hundred thousand dollars of equipment. With ample locations near the devastation, Warren CAT staff knew that its dealership was able to
deliver the equipment quickly so that more people could begin working on site and coordinated closely with Agoglia to see that everything arrived in the areas most in need. Ronnie Lane, vice president, machine division, Warren Power & Machinery, said, “I knew about First Response as I had met Tad at a Cat Rental Summit earlier this year. He is supported by the Cat Foundation. I was very impressed with his dedication and commitment to help others in need. When I learned that he was in Moore as one of the first responders I reached out to him and offered our assistance. In addition to the Cat equipment that First Response already owns, Warren is providing a backhoe loader and skid steer loader to Tad’s team for their use in the cleanup effort. Tad is always very gracious and thankful for our support. He claims we are truly his partner in his efforts.” Lane pointed out that since several different communities were affected by storms during the month of May; the biggest challenge was not getting equipment to the various locations but identifying and prioritizing who needed the equipment the most. “We had many customers, both private and governmental that rented or purchased our equipment during the normal course of busi-
ness that is now being used in the cleanup efforts. Several of our customers are the primary contractors for the cleanup in Moore. We have donated the use of multiple machines to various volunteer groups where our employees are involved. For example, our employees have volunteered in Shawnee, Moore, Bethel Acres, Little Axe, Carney, El Reno and Newcastle utilizing our donated equipment in their cleanup efforts,” Lane said. In addition to donating machinery, Warren CAT has leveraged its status as a large engine dealer and has assisted with providing power for a number of venues, including more than two megawatts in generator sets for the Toby Keith Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert that took place on July 6. Warren CAT also has donated portable generator sets to power the “Loads of Hope” mobile washing facility sponsored by Tide. Warren CAT stepped in and, in partnership with Holt CAT, the authorized Caterpillar heavy equipment and engine dealer for 118 counties in south, central, north and east Texas; and Foley CAT, serving 104 of 105 counties in Kansas and 40 counties in western Missouri, including the Kansas City metropolitan area; provided standby power for the Oklahoma water see TORNADO page 48

ISO or H pattern joysticks, or foot controls, a machine can be delivered equipped with all the options so that each operator of the machine can opt for a preferred method. • A new boom lift design… New boom breakout engineering gives greater operator visibility and lifting power. A simple radial lift system is offered in smaller models, with larger models engineered to provide a vertical lift. • “Rider control”… This feature lets a raised boom ride on a hydraulic damper, which eliminates some jostling of the operator as the machine moves across uneven terrain. • The largest cooling fan in the industry… What’s more, the fan reverses automatically, or upon command, to blow debris from the fan cage. This is an important feature in work areas where airborne refuse can be a problem. • More comfortable cab… The flat floor has 25 percent more foot room than previously offered in the machines and noise levels have been reduced. The front glass on the cab curves outward to accommodate “leaners.”
• Boom lock… To lock in place a raised boom during servicing, a safety lock is conveniently activated by the operator in the safety of the cab. This is an example of making things simple for an operator. “If it’s not easy, a customer isn’t going to do it,” Zupancic said. • Easier servicing and engine access… Side panels lift away to expose cooling and engine areas. The cab can be raised and the floor lifted out for access to control areas beneath. Oil and coolant drains are conveniently located behind a side door. • Easy-connect hydraulics… Offered as a standard feature are auxiliary hydraulic couplers that can be connected and disconnected while under pressure. • Yanmar 3.3-liter or 3.1-liter diesel engines… The larger models provide up to 10 percent more hp than did the D-Series. Engines over 75 horsepower meet Interim Tier IV emission standards; smaller engines are Final Tier IV compliant. The E-Series consists of nine models: Three large-frame skid steer models (326E, 328E, 332E) and two mid-frame models (318E, 320E). In track loaders, there are two large-frame models (329E, 333E) and two
mid-frame models (319E, 323E). Deere has been offering skid steers since the 1990s, but not until 2001 did the Molineheadquartered company start selling skid steers of its own manufacture. Compact excavators were introduced in 2003 and track loaders in 2008. According to Deere executives, more than half of the compact units are sold to construction and landscape contractors, including snow removal companies, with the rest going to rental companies, ag interests, manufacturing plants, and government installations. 35G Compact Excavator Another so-called “customer-inspired” piece of compact equipment demonstrated at the June media event is the compact 35G excavator. The engine for the 35G was actually downsized to 24 hp (17.9 kW) from a previous model’s 27 hp (80 kW) to eliminate the need to comply with mandated emissions controls. However, the compact excavator’s hydraulic system was rejiggered so that the available hp is more efficiently utilized. Hence, Deere engineers say performance
was not compromised by the reduction in horsepower. Oil-impregnated bushings on the machine are said to extend the period between lubrication. This is seen as a boon to equipment rental companies that can send out the excavator for a week without worrying about it being properly serviced. The 35G has a zero-swing tail — within the area of its track footprin t— for close-in work next to foundations and buildings. Furthermore, the undercarriage can be narrowed, each track being hydraulically pulled inward so that the excavator can navigate narrow gateways. Its dozer blade is segmented so it can be shortened to fit within the narrower tracks. The blade can be angled 20 degrees either way for smoother backfilling. The 35G rides on a choice of tracks — rubber, steel, or steel with rubber treads. Some 95 percent of units sold are delivered with rubber tracks, but the other track options let Deere cater to the additional five percent of its customers. Kenworth Launches T880 at Mid-America Trucking Show Kenworth Truck Company launched the new Kenworth T880 at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. “Skillfully designed and robustly engineered, the new Kenworth T880 builds upon Kenworth’s distinguished 90-year heritage of quality, innovation and technology to produce industry-leading, rugged and reliable vocational trucks,” said Gary Moore, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “As we celebrate Kenworth’s 90th anniversary, the T880 represents our heritage very well as the latest evolution of our quality product line, while also reinforcing Kenworth’s leadership in vocational truck performance. Vocational customers and drivers really demand a tough and durable truck in today’s challenging work environments, and we are confident the Kenworth T880 will surpass customer expectations,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer. “For example, the T880 features a panoramic windshield for enhanced visibility, quiet cab with its triple-sealed and robust doors, five-piece hood for easier and faster repairs, air-assisted hydraulic clutch, complex reflector headlamps, excellent maneuverability, and new lightweight, factoryinstalled lift axles that vocational customers will especially appreciate,” Baney said. “On top of all that, we designed the T880 with distinctively sculpted lines that form an evolutionary, but uniquely Kenworth look.” The new T880 is for vocational applications, including dump, mixer, refuse and heavy haul. Its addition will complement Kenworth’s current vocational line-up that includes the T800, T440, W900S and C500. The T880 will be available for production later this summer.
The new T880 is for vocational applications, including dump, mixer, refuse, and heavy haul.
The Kenworth T880 is standard with the 12.9-L PACCAR MX-13 engine. With its high-end ratings of 500 hp (373 kW) and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque, the PACCAR MX-13 engine provides a lightweight, fuel-efficient engine option for vocational applications, including dumps and heavy haul applications more than 100,000 lbs. (43,359 kg). The T880 also is available with the Cummins ISX15 engine with up to 600 hp (447 kW) and 2,050 lb.-ft. of torque. The T880 uses Kenworth’s 6.9 ft. (2.1 m) wide, stamped aluminum cab, which is robotically assembled. The cab has a comfortable 23 in. (58 cm) of room between the seats. The T880 offers the premium Diamond VIT and Vantage trim levels and two interior color options of Sandstone Tan and Slate Gray. Stamped Aluminum Cab The lightweight cab is new for vocational applications. First introduced with the T680 in 2012, the cab’s durability testing regimen focused on achieving the highest, demanding requirements for vocational trucks. Robotically assembled, the stamped aluminum panels are connected by Henrob selfpenetrating fasteners to produce an extremely durable cab with enhanced resistance to noise, vibration and corrosion. The cab also utilizes Kenworth’s signature cowl-mounted mirrors for better

visibility, increased durability and reduced adjustment. Panoramic Windshield The T880 is standard with a panoramic one-piece, bonded-in windshield with enhanced visibility. The T880 windshield has enhanced thickness to minimize the effect of rock incidents, offers efficient replacement time, and is much larger in size compared to the T800 windshield. Robust Door The lightweight, stamped aluminum door is durable and robust enough to support up to 400 lbs. (181 kg). The door provides smooth airflow around the cab and minimizes noise-inducing turbulence. A pressure relief valve equalizes interior and exterior air pressure to make the door easy to open and close. The door is triple sealed against the elements and road noise. Hood and Bumper The new vocational hood is made of Metton, which is a lightweight, durable composite material with excellent impact resistance and finished surface. The hood, which offers easier and faster repair, is offered in two configurations, both with bolt-on fenders. The T880 is available in a 116.5-in. (296 cm) BBC. It also is available in a 122.5-in. (311 cm) BBC standard length. Both include a 5-piece Metton hood. The Kenworth grille
The Kenworth T880 is standard with the 12.9-L PACCAR MX-13 engine.
is made from corrosion-resistant aluminum wire mesh for added protection of cooling system components. The grille’s surround is made of polished stainless steel. With the advanced hood assist system, lifting the hood requires just 35 lbs. of opening force. To aid in easy serviceability and replacements, the T880 is available with all the current T800 metal bumpers. Lighting The T880 is standard with dual lamp complex reflector headlamps, which offer best in industry headlamp performance at a lower cost and more durable package. All standard exterior lights utilize LED technology that provides a 20,000hour life, which equates to about 15 years of truck life. LED lights are also used extensively in the cab and sleeper. T880 Vocational Options The T880 is available with five new, factory-installed and lightweight Watson & Chalin lift axles, including a 10K offering for the first time and a 20K version with a 200-lb. (90.7 kg) weight savings. Also offered are new steering gears for improved steering feedback and increased wheelcut for greater maneuverability. Driver Performance Center The Driver Performance Center uses a full-color, high-resolution, 5-in. (12.7 cm) Thin Film
Transistor display screen, which includes current truck information, diagnostic data, and pop-up alerts. The center also displays situational-specific recommendations, which help improve vehicle performance. HVAC System With standard automatic temperature control, simply set the desired temperature, and the system maintains it. A one-touch feature provides maximum defrost. These features help keep drivers comfortable while maintaining their focus on driving. Seats The Kenworth seats offer an advanced air suspension system that automatically adjusts to various driver weights. A full range of seat comfort is available to meet driver-specific preferences. For the T880, Kenworth offers the DuraSupreme heavy duty seat fabric in charcoal, gray and tan. Kenworth Dash The dash cluster has an easy-toread layout with nine standard gauges and 12 additional gauges available. The switches utilize the toggling feature that drivers prefer, while maintaining rocker switch functionality. The T880 uses new electric-over-air dash switches introduced on the T680, and offers additional options to aid with vocational and body builder requirements. The Kenworth dash includes Kenworth NavPlus — with hands-free cell phone capability via Bluetooth connections and voice commands. NavPlus is standard with premium interior trim. joined small business owners from across the country and members of the Stop the HIT Coalition for a press conference to urge repeal of the health insurance tax (HIT) within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The Stop the HIT Coalition, is a broadbased group representing the nation’s small business owners, their employees and the self-employed that advocates for the repeal of the HIT. ARA is a Stop the HIT Coalition member. “The HIT puts up roadblocks to small business growth and job creation, and will ultimately have a negative effect on hardworking families, said John McClelland, ARA vice president of government affairs. “With six months left until this tax goes into effect in 2014, it is encouraging to see our bipartisan leaders in Congress raise the urgency around the need to fix this problem before it is too late. Billed as a fee on insurance companies
that sell policies on the fully-insured market, the Congressional Budget Office has said consumers can expect to see the cost of the health insurance tax passed on in the form of higher health insurance premiums. One estimate predicts the HIT, which takes effect next year, will cost the average family $500 a year. Small businesses would be acutely affected by the HIT, as 88 percent purchase health insurance policies that would be subject to the tax. The four sponsors of bipartisan legislation to repeal the HIT participated in the event to draw awareness to the impending implementation of the damaging tax. The two companion bills — S. 603 and H.R. 763 – together have more than 240 bipartisan cosponsors. For more information, visit www.ARArental.org. PCA Projects Cement Usage to Increase 6.2 Percent in 2013 Following the strongest cement consumption gains in seven years in 2012, cement consumption growth will continue in 2013 with a 6.2 percent increase. According to the latest forecast from the Portland Cement Association (PCA), the majority of market recovery will occur in the second half of 2013. “Recessions correct imbalances generated during boom periods, Ed Sullivan, PCA chief economist said. “Few economists doubt the generation of a large pent-up demand during the past several years. The question is, when the economy will unleash its potential for strong growth? The recession has created a pent-up demand not just for consumer products but also construction. For example, PCA expects housing starts, to reach nearly 1 million in 2013. Multifamily construction also continues to grow at a strong pace and this trend should continue as favorable fundamentals fuel the sector. Multifamily starts recorded a 55 percent gain in 2011 and 36 percent growth in 2012. PCA expects an additional growth of 29 percent in 2013 to 318,000 units. “Although nonresidential and residential will be in full recovery in 2013, public con-
struction will act as a drag on cement consumption this year, Sullivan said. “However, as the economy gains momentum in 2014, job gains will strengthen states’ fiscal conditions and support stronger construction spending. The accelerated consumption predicted during the second half of 2013 should carry into the following year. PCA projects an increase of 9.2 percent for 2014. PCA also upwardly revised its long-range projections for 2015 to 2017. Annual growth during that period is expected to be as high as 11.1 percent. PCA predicts cement consumption levels will reach 120 million metric tons by 2017. About PCA The Portland Cement Association represents cement companies in the United States and Canada. It conducts market development, engineering, research, education and public affairs programs. For more information, visit www.cement.org. To further reduce maintenance and service costs while taking advantage of zero emissions, Terex Fuchs offers stationary, pedestalmounted AHL 800 Series material handlers. These handlers can be mounted to steel, concrete or fourpoint sub-bases and are modified to meet customers’ site-specific needs. Pedestal-mounted machines offer the same broad stick and boom configurations as standard handlers. “Because of its stationary design, a pedestal machine takes planning to ensure it fits the needs of the customer,” said Brezinski. “Terex Fuchs and your local distributor offer consultation services to ensure the right stationary material handler system is designed for the job requirements.” Through the use of an adapter ring, the upper carriage of a Terex Fuchs material handler can be matched with the undercarriage of the next model size larger machine. “For instance, we can mount the undercarriage of an MHL380 to an MHL360 upper carriage to create a heavy-duty [HD] MHL365 handler,” added Brezinski. HD handlers can be created for the MHL340, 350 and 360 machines. The larger undercarriage of Terex Fuchs HD machines delivers excellent stability, according to the manufacturer. LoMc Business Partners Credits Ohio CAT, IROCK, Hard Work to Success It’s a testimony to both men that Joshua McNary’s former employer, Jerry Baden of TVEK Enterprises, helped he and partner, William Lockhart get their start in business, named LoMc LLC, in the fall of 2012 with a screening plant they built themselves. When they landed a job recovering iron from an old Republic Steel dump site in Canton, Ohio, they were tasked with processing a five acre mound averaging 60 to 70 ft. (18 to 21 m) deep. Faced with moving a mountain to separate slag from the reusable iron, McNary and Lockhart soon set about searching for equipment that would deliver greater efficiency. The first screening plant they tried out was an improvement but still didn’t provide the processing speed they’d need if they were to stay in business. A call to Chris Harris of Ohio CAT put them on the road to profitability. According to McNary, Harris introduced them to IROCK’s screening plants which turned out to be exactly what they had in mind for the job. They’re currently running an IROCK TS-522 triple deck tracked screener and an IROCK TS-522 double deck tracked screener on the job. In the first stage of the process, they load materials into the triple deck screener to separate materials into piles of 2x slag. Slag fines and the remaining materials are conveyed past a Dings #33 magnet to separate out iron from 304 slag. The second stage is to run the iron materials through the IROCK TS-522 double deck tracked screener to separate 2-3/4 in. iron from 3/8 to 1/8 in. iron and a final recovery of fines. According to McNary, with the separa-

tion of fines, their pace is 3,000 tons (2,722 t)per day. He added that if they were running 1/2 in. material they could double the amount processed daily. In all, they’ve processed more than 2 million tons (1.8 million t) of materials at the site. The iron they process is sent to steel mills in Ohio, Michigan and other nearby states to be melted down and reused while the slag will be used for fill. McNary explained that the material they’re recovering is rated at 68 percent FE. The recovered iron also contains lime, phosphorous, nickel and cadmium, all materials that would need to be added to a mill’s furnace to produce iron products if virgin iron was used. Currently the mills they supply can’t take any recycled materials under 3/8 in. so the iron fines are being saved for a process called water jigging which separates materials by density for a
high grade iron. According to McNary, his old employer Jerry Baden is working on improvements to the water jig process for a higher production level. According to McNary, having IROCK machines on the job has helped the company land a new recycling job in Lorain, Ohio on a 400 acre site averaging 70 ft. (21 m) deep that could keep them busy for the next 20 years. Regarding the IROCK screening plants, McNary said that while not all of the features he found beneficial are unique to IROCK, it’s the features combined in one machine that make the IROCK screeners stand out. Key features start with the remote controlled grizzly on the initial feed that allows the operator to dump oversized materials from the loader. Another feature is the ease and speed see PARTNERS page 38

with which they can change the angle of the screens to remove fines. McNary also is impressed with the vibration speed, adding that while it’s not considered high frequency, it’s as close as it gets with a portable plant. McNary said the tracks on the plants make a huge contribution to their productivity, allowing them to move with the pile of materials, making set up time incredibly quick. He said that both IROCK and Ohio CAT are great to work with. Both companies are extremely responsive to their needs, providing a level of support that indicates a vested interest in their ongoing success. Maintenance and service issues have been treated with a demonstrated concern for LoMc LLC’s success. LoMc LLC, which currently has six employees, with plans to add four to five more, now has four IROCK plants, two Cat excavators, and two Cat wheel loaders along with other miscellaneous equipment.

Torndao Aftermath Hits Close to Home for Cat Family TORNADO from page 16
treatment facility in Moore that was damaged during the storm. In fact the entire Cat family has been there for Oklahoma and for Warren CAT, which as a dealership did not escape the storms unscathed. “We had about 10 employees whose property sustained some level of damage in the various storms. One employee lost his home completely. After about a month in a hotel he has relocated to a rental house until his home can be rebuilt,” said Lane. “Our main Oklahoma City facility received significant roof and cosmetic damage during the May 31 event but nothing to hamper normal business operations. “The support from Cat and the Cat Dealership family has been outstanding. We have been contacted by more than 16 Cat dealers from across the country offering support, equipment and donations to help us clean up and get moving. Cat Inc. also has supported us with expedited shipment of equipment, support and offers of donations. The entire Cat network including the dealerships has flexed its considerable strength to reach out and support Warren as we sup-
port our community and those affected by the storms,” Lane said. Although long out of the headlines, Oklahoma will need that support for a long time to come, and the construction industry and First Response Team will continue working closely with the local fire department in Moore and the other devastated towns to find people still in need, helping to clear home sites and prepare the sites for rebuilding. The work is emotionally draining and there is so much of it to be done. “It’s not often we see F5 tornadoes much less one that hits a city directly,” said Agoglia. “With thousands of homes and business completely destroyed the work we are doing can be daunting because as soon as you clear debris from one homeowner’s property you see there is another devastated home next to it. But I think that’s what’s important...to help one person, one family at a time.” For more information, visit www.firstresponseteam.org and www.warrencat.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Although long out of the headlines, Oklahoma will need support for a long time to come.
Transition…
Ritchie Bros. President Rob Mackay to Retire October 31 Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers announced the retirement of Rob Mackay, its president, effective Oct. 31, 2013. After 28 years of service in many different capacities, all based in the Ritchie Bros. head office in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mackay will transition from day-to-day duties and then retire as an employee on Oct. 31, 2013. “Rob has contributed very effectively in so many ways to the success and growth of our company,” said Peter Blake, CEO of Ritchie Bros. “He has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles over the past 28 years and devoted his time and energy to help build the Ritchie Bros. global business into the industry leading position we have today. Earlier in the year, Rob took a role on the board of an agricultural equipment dealer with a view to transition to the next phase in his business career. We wish Rob the very best for a happy and healthy retirement, and offer him our heartfelt thanks for all he has done to make Ritchie Bros. what we are today.” For more information, visit rbauction.com.

Industry Remains Fragile JOBS from page 1
Nevada. There was no change in Alaska, New Hampshire and Oklahoma. Connecticut experienced the sharpest decline in construction employment from May to June (minus 3.4 percent, minus 1,900), followed by West Virginia (minus 3.0 percent, minus 1,100) and Vermont (minus 2.9 percent, minus 400). Texas lost the largest number of jobs between May and June (minus 8,500, minus 1.4 percent), followed by Pennsylvania (minus 3,600, minus 1.6 percent). Over the past 12 months, 36 states added construction jobs — the larger number with year-over-year gains since May 2012. Wyoming had the largest 12-month percentage increase (10.4 percent, 2,200 jobs), closely followed by Louisiana (9.7 percent, 12,200) and Arizona (9.7 percent, 11,100). California added the most jobs (32,200, 5.5 percent), followed by Texas (31,400, 5.4 percent), Louisiana and Florida (12,200, 3.6 percent). Among the 14 states with construction job losses between June 2012 and June 2013, South Dakota lost the highest percentage (minus 6.2 percent, minus 1,300), followed by Kentucky (minus 5.2 percent, minus 3,500) and Indiana (minus 5.1 percent, (This story also can be found on minus 6,400). Indiana had the largest numConstruction Equipment Guide’s Web site at ber of jobs lost, followed by Ohio (minus www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) 3,900, minus 2.2 percent), Kentucky and
Pennsylvania (minus 3,500, minus 1.6 percent). Two states — Louisiana and North Dakota — set new construction employment records in June, but most remain far below their pre-recession peaks, Simonson added. Despite its strong showing in June, Nevada’s construction employment last month was still 64 percent below the June 2006 peak. Similarly, construction employment in Florida and Arizona last month was 49 percent below the June 2006 record highs, in spite of big one-year gains. Association officials cautioned that the construction industry remains fragile as private sector demand has cooled recently even as public sector investments in construction remain relatively weak. They urged administration officials to avoid putting in place costly new regulatory measures and urged Congress to act on vital infrastructure legislation like the Water Resources Development Act. “With current conditions, one misguided regulation and one missed investment opportunity could cost a lot of hard working construction workers their jobs,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
