The construction of a new 282,000 sq. ft. (26,199 sq m) Terminal C at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif. reached a significant project milestone on Aug. 2, as McCarthy Building Companies topped out structural steel on the new facility. The event marked the end of a four-month span where construction workers used a 350ton (318 t) crawler crane to install 2,400 pieces of structural steel. Initial construction began in August 2009 when an existing parking structure was deconstructed by Nurpecon LP to make way for the new terminal. “It was a deconstruction process. They [the contractor] couldn’t demolish it like a typical

project. It had to be taken apart piece by piece,” said Jenny Wedge, public information officer of John Wayne Airport. The existing east concrete masonry wall for Terminal B also was demolished as part of new Terminal C construction, as the new terminal will directly connect to Terminal B.

A Mini-Max remote control breaker was used to demolish the 20 ft. (6.1 m) high by 8 to 12 in. (20.3 to 30.4 cm) thick wall. The breaker was transported from Iowa and is a smaller version of a backhoe — with a custom made 6 ft. (1.8 m) long chisel that’s controlled by see AIRPORT page 12

Caterpillar to Build Excavator Construction Job Manufacturing Plant in Texas Gains Become More Widespread PEORIA, Ill. (AP) Caterpillar Inc. said Aug. 12 it will build a hydraulic excavator manufacturing facility in Victoria, Texas, that will employ more than 500 workers. The facility will triple Caterpillar's hydraulic excavator production capacity in the United States, and double the number of Caterpillar’s U.S. employees making excavators. Construction on the 600,000-sq.-ft. structure will begin in September, with production expected to start in mid-2012. “Based on our comprehensive review of possible locations, Victoria’s proximity to our supply base, access to ports and other

transportation, as well as the positive business climate in Texas made this the ideal site for this project,” said Gary Stampanato, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for excavators. Caterpillar received a $1.18 million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) as part of its commitment to build in the state, Gov. Rick Perry said. Since its creation in 2003, the TEF has invested more than $397 million in securing job-creating projects in the state. Currently in the United States, Caterpillar see CATERPILLAR page 34

Construction job gains were more widespread across the country and job losses were generally less severe in July than in June, the Associated General Contractors of America reported in an analysis of state employment data released by the Labor Department. Twenty-six states added construction jobs in July, compared to 19 in June, while six states added construction jobs over the past year and most others are losing far fewer jobs than previously, association officials noted. see JOBS page 34

FAE, Tractor City Host Product Demo in San Antonio

n an effort to show the consumers the innovations and quality of their product line in action, FAE and Tractor City got together Aug. 3 in San Antonio, Texas, to host a product demonstration featuring select models of FAE, Prime Tech Prime Movers, Mustang and John Deere equipment. The Mustang 2109 skid steer was the carrier unit for the FAE STC/SSL 150 rock crusher and the FAE UML SSL/150 mulcher/grinder. Using the Mustang for both attachments served two purposes. One was that the 2109 was more than capable of handling both attachments and the second purpose was to demonstrate the ease of interchanging the FAE attachments. For travel convenience of its guests, Tractor City procured the property to hold the demonstration within the city limits of San Antonio and approximately one mile from its facility located at 2800 SE Loop 410 in San Antonio. Since the site was within the city limits, the City of San Antonio provided an inspector to examine the location in order to mark protected trees from being used during the demonstration. The site was chosen specifically due to the variety of trees and vegetation that is representative of that part of Texas. Even in triple digit temperatures, more than 40 guests attended throughout the day to watch demonstrations ranging from tree and brush clearing to rock crushing. “Our part of Texas is prolific with vegetation such as the invasive mesquite that is actually a bush, but can grow extremely large and create a tap root that has been recorded as deep as 190 feet,” said David Aguilar, sales manager of Tractor City. “Even though the wood of a mesquite is extremely dense and often referred to as Texas Ironwood, the UML SSL/150 mulcher/grinder demonstrated that it had the power to go right through it with no problem.” “One of the larger problems in the San Antonio area is the expanse of cedars,” said Tony Waits, customer relations representative of Tractor City. “Cedars are a heavy competitor for water needed by more docile vegetation in our area. “Tree and brush mulching is gaining popularity over track-type dozers and backhoes since that equipment basically push the trees up and over exposing their roots and leaving gaping holes in the ground and disturbing the rock. Once the trees are out of the ground, the roots have to dry and eventually are burned or hauled away,” Waits continued. “In many cases this debris is simply left as well as the holes in the ground. Tree mulching/grinding with products such as the FAE attachments, improved the land without all the destruction. The results are less of a fire hazard and possible soil erosion. Mulching and grinding takes the vegetation right to the ground surface and allows the organic materials to stay in place and enhance the soil.” FAE was represented by its CEO, Giorgio Carera, and Service Specialist, Jayson Garland, from Georgia and Territory Manager Ryan Smith from the Fort Worth, Texas, area. Tractor City employees attending the demo were Aguilar, Waits, and Coleman Weathersby, parts representative. Both FAE and Tractor City representatives fielded questions and provided instructions on how to operate the equipment. There were $1,500 coupons offered on all the FAE attachments and a full set of teeth with the purchase of any Prime Tech Prime Mover. All were treated to a delicious fried catfish lunch that was prepared on-site. The equipment demonstrated included the UML/SSL 150 mulcher/grinder, a UML ST 175 PTO powered mulcher, PT200 self-propelled crawler mulcher, STC/SSL 150 rock crusher and the PMM/SSL standard flow flail mulcher. A Mustang 2109 skid steer adapted with steel track and a John Deere 6430 were used to host the attachments. “The demonstration turned out very well for all involved. Our customers were able to see the equipment in action and a few actually tried out their operating skills with the machines. Pending finance approval, one attendee will take delivery next week of a Mustang 2109 with a FAE UML SSL/150 tree mulcher,” said Aguilar. see DEMO page 38

On Tunnel From Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Construction is under way on a tunnel that’s expected to provide a safer way for Marin County drivers to get into San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge. The $116 million Battery Tunnel began construction July 21 along with an elevated 1,340-ft. (408 m)-long viaduct to take drivers into the city. One tunnel is slated to open on Labor Day 2011 with five lanes that will handle both northbound and southbound traffic, until a second tunnel is built. The current route between the bridge and downtown San Francisco, Doyle Drive, has been found to be seismically unsafe. The 1.5-mi. (2.4 km) southern approach to the bridge was built in 1936. The state Department of Transportation has since spent $35 million to strengthen Doyle Drive. But bridge officials said it still could be vulnerable in a large earthquake.

Another piece of specialty equipment used during terminal construction has been a bending machine, which produces roof panels of varying radii for the different size barrel roofs. Currently, average manpower onsite for terminal con-

struction is approximately 220 workers, with that number to increase close to 340 workers at the project’s peak. “We have been working nights for almost six months and will continue to do so until project completion,” Tchapadarian said. A duplicate of the airport’s two existing terminals, the new six-gate facility is part of the larger John Wayne Airport Improvement Program — a $543.1 million project that also

includes the construction of a new 750,000-sq.-ft. (69,677 sq m), 2,000-space parking structure. Constructed by Swinerton Builders, the new parking structure features buckling restrained braces for seismic reinforcement. The parking structure will be the first such structure in the country to use this type of bracing, which was developed in Japan, Wedge said. During both new terminal and parking structure constructions several project challenges have presented themselves. “Working adjacent to and connecting to exiting terminal is a challenging task. The terminal is 20 years old and some of the records identifying exiting utilities are not that accurate,” Tchapadarian said. “We have encountered a number of unforeseen underground utilities. We have had to alternate our plans in order to incorporate new construction.” Another challenge surrounded the deconstruction of the existing parking structure. “It [the deconstruction] took down 1,100 parking spaces. We were having days where there weren’t enough parking, spaces,” Wedge said. “Finding parking for passengers while construction was under way was a major challenge.” The new terminal and parking structure will be opened in November 2011.Parsons is the program manager for the new terminal with Arcadis/Pinnacle One conducting construction management. Jacobs is the civil engineer, with structural engineering provided by IDS Group Inc. Specialty contractors include: Capparelli/KHS&S (framing/drywall); Helix (electrical), A.O. L.A. Pushing to Become Nation’s Mass Transit Leader By Daisy Nguyen

LOS ANGELES (AP) The region famous for jilting the street car to take up a love affair with the automobile is trying to rekindle its long ago romance with commuter rail. If successful, the novel plan to borrow billions from the federal government, led by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, would result in the largest transit expansion project in the nation. Los Angeles County voters agreed two years ago to pay a half-cent sales tax over the next 30 years to extend train and rapid bus lines, projects that would routinely require federal assistance. But the mayor, who sits on a county transportation board, wants a loan instead of Washington handouts to get the projects built in a decade rather than 30 years. He contends it would save money in the long run, result in more construction jobs and less traffic and pollution. If the approach works, it could set a precedent for cities and states across the country considering major rail and road improvements. “We can’t wait because traffic is unbelievable and the environmental problem is

too severe,” said Denny Zane, who is building a coalition of business, labor and environmental groups pushing for the plan. “The need for jobs and economic development also is very severe.” In the first half of the 20th century the Los Angeles region boasted an extensive system of streetcars and high-speed electric railways including the famed Red Cars. After World War II, Southern California began abandoning those systems in favor of personal automobiles and freeways, leaving mass transit to buses. Now, with gridlock commonplace, the focus is back on high-capacity transit systems — light rail, interurban heavy rail, dedicated busways — to catch up with the transportation demands of millions of people. But with federal and state transportation funds dwindling due to a reduction in gas tax revenue, experts say the time is right to test innovative ideas in transportation financing. “The national government should help cities that are helping themselves and take advantage of these bold plans to transform how these places operate and function,” said Robert Puentes, a fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program. Under the so-called 30/10 initiative, the sales tax would generate about $5.8 billion

Crystal Springs Dam to Be Upgraded for S.F. Water Storage HILLBOROUGH, Calif. (AP) A 120year-old dam that holds San Francisco’s water supply is getting upgrades so it can hold an extra 1.5 billion gal. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission said it will thicken the Crystal Springs Dam and raise it by 9 ft. (2.7 m). The work will allow the reservoir to store a total of 21 billion gal. The project is estimated to cost between $15 and $25 million, and is part of $4.6 billion in improvements to the 120-year-old

water system. Construction is expected to begin in early 2011. The dam was once the largest concrete dam of its kind in the United States when it was built in 1889 to hold water for San Francisco and the Peninsula. The system, which transports water through the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct from Yosemite National Park, now serves 2.5 million customers.

over the next 10 years to pay for a dozen projects. Local transportation officials said another $8.8 billion is needed to pay for the estimated $14.6 billion total cost. By using the future sales tax revenue as collateral for long-term bonds and a low-interest federal loan, the county Metropolitan Transportation Authority could put these projects on the fast track. The county would repay the federal loan over 20 years with proceeds from the sales tax. The projects include a long-awaited subway extension to the economically vibrant west side of Los Angeles (a plan often called the Subway to the Sea), a regional connector linking three rail lines in the downtown core, plus light rail extensions reaching Los Angeles International Airport and communities to the south and east. In all, completion of these projects would add 78 mi. of rail and bus-only lanes to the current, 102-mi. system and 77 million annual transit boardings to the MTA’s current 445 million. Because there is no existing federal funding program for the grand scale of projects Los Angeles County wants to get going at once, officials are seeking a combination of loans, grants and bonds that would require congressional approval. The effort is picking up some momentum. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a June letter that the 30/10 model “has the potential to transform the way we invest in transportation projects across the nation.” In another nod to the plan, the Federal Transit Administration agreed to evaluate the Subway to the Sea for federal funding in its entirety instead of in three segments, giving the project an edge when it competes for grants from the agency. “It’s a good and healthy indicator of government support for the project,” said Raffi Haig Hamparian, government relations manager at the MTA. The region has had past successes in getting federal investments in massive transportation projects. The effort to obtain a $400 million federal loan for a $2.4 billion dedicated railway linking the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles with transcontinen-

tal railyards laid the groundworks for a 1998 federal credit program for significant transportation projects. One transportation expert said the decision to incur debt over 30 years comes with inherent risks. “Cost overruns will cost us more than we estimate now, and give us a certain amount of financial risks in the future,” said Martin Wachs of the Rand Corp. think tank. However, he said the benefits of accelerating the projects outweigh the negatives. Transit agencies struggling for a bigger share of federal and state funds are paying attention. The Regional Transportation Authority of Chicago faces funding shortages that restrict spending on maintaining and upgrading the system to $2.7 billion over five years, said director Steve Schlickman. Chicago operates the nation’s second largest transit system. “Hopefully other metropolitan areas will wake up and realize that virtually every major city in this country is underinvesting in their infrastructure,” Schlickman said. “We can’t rely on the federal government, we have to rely on all levels of government.” Villaraigosa said his staff has had discussions with officials from Houston, Chicago, New York and other cities interested in the 30/10 model to build their transportation projects faster. “There’s a lot of national interest because everybody’s going to Washington knocking on doors and nobody’s answering,” the mayor said. “They’re realizing that the best way to get those doors open is to leverage the little federal money that there is with local money.” Wachs said there isn’t enough money to go around for every city lining up for federal funds to improve transportation systems, but those that are willing to put up their own money should get priority. “They should have first dibs because their voters have been willing to tax themselves to get these important programs started, the national government should notice that,” he said.

Preservationists: Don’t Change West’s First Freeway By Daisy Nguyen

LOS ANGELES (AP) You don’t typically hear Southern Californians rhapsodize about a freeway, but the 8.2-mi. (13.2 km) route between downtown Los Angeles and suburban Pasadena isn’t typical. Opened in 1940, the oldest freeway in the West follows the meanders of the Arroyo Seco wash past parks and lush embankments, and under bridges and through tunnels built with the elegance of a bygone era. Known variously as the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the Pasadena Freeway or simply “the 110,” it also carries motorists past some of the city’s oldest — and toughest — neighborhoods as its tight curves open and close views of mountain peaks and downtown skyscrapers. Squinting to shut out thoroughly modern gang graffiti and the mangled plastic debris of 21st century auto mashups, it’s still possible to envision a Ford Model A wending its way to Los Angeles or a stately General Motors LaSalle carrying an oil baron home to one of the old school mansions of Pasadena. That’s why preservationists are crying foul over the freeway’s first major improvement project in 70 years, a $17 million effort to line the original 6 mi. (10 km) of the route with new concrete barriers and lighting. They complain that the work will remove historic features that define its character and that the additions don’t have a sufficiently authentic appearance. “The Arroyo Seco Parkway is a real gem. I don’t think people fully appreciate that yet and I think they’ll regret the damage that’s being caused,” said Paul Daniel Marriott, author of “Saving Historic Roads.” The route represents a transitional period in American highway construction when planners were moving away from the parkways popularized on the East Coast for leisure driving to building roads for high-speed, efficient travel, Marriott said. Its design melded lush landscaping with six lanes allowing commuters to reach speeds of 45 mph. Many of its elements became prototypes for the modern freeway, so much so that by the 1950s, when Los Angeles was emerging as a car capital, the parkway’s name evolved to the Pasadena Freeway. “This is where we come from, this is where our freeways evolved from,” said Nicole Possert, a community activist leading the preservation effort. “This was a testing ground

for what was to become the California freeway system.” The California Department of Transportation began late last year to replace metal beam guardrails on wooden posts with concrete barriers for safety and to reduce maintenance

costs. Caltrans said the upgrades were crucial to prevent out-ofcontrol vehicles from plunging into the Arroyo Seco, a watercourse that carries storm runoff from the San Gabriel Mountains to the Los Angeles River. Balancing the need to retain the freeway’s historic features while trying to bring it up to modern highway standards has been one of the department’s biggest challenges. A drive on the freeway can be frightening or suggest Grand Prix racing. Lanes are narrow, there are no shoulders, and many entrances and exits are sharp right turns with little time for merging or braking. There are only occasional short turnouts for changing a tire or waiting for a tow. The parkway was originally built to carry 27,000 vehicles a day. By 2008, it carried an average daily traffic load of 125,000 cars. Trucks are banned. A 2005 study found it had the highest accident rate compared to eight other freeways in the metropolitan area, most of them caused by speeding drivers. “On this route there’s little patrolling by the police because of the lack of shoulder space, all that means is more speeding and more accidents,” said Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, a professor of urban planning at the University of California, Los Angeles who co-authored the study. Fixing a guardrail after a crash requires closing a lane, causing traffic to back up for miles. Caltrans said replacing guardrails with concrete barriers

will lower maintenance costs from $800 to $80 per kilometer (.62 mi.) of barrier, will take less time to repair and therefore won’t impede traffic. The changes are welcomed by Radolfo Torres, who has lived next to the southbound lanes for 30 years and has jumped over the chain link fence numerous times to rescue people involved in accidents. “There’s no room to widen the road, and you can’t straighten it either. This is better than doing nothing,” Torres said. But preservationists said the side barriers, which feature patterns simulating the stonework architecture in historic communities along the route, don’t look like the real deal and will serve as canvasses for taggers. New lampposts, designed to look old while offering improved road lighting, aren’t replicas of the kinds that used to line the parkway 70 years ago, they said. “Why was the style of the original lamps not respected or preserved? Why does it have to be some phony thing?” said Martha Benedict, a community activist. Opponents also decry the removal of a center median curb that is an original feature. The curb, which in some places has indentations pointing in the correct direction of travel, was considered one of the parkway’s many novel design features when it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1999.

Preservationists said the curb, while little noticed by speeding commuters, is as much a character-defining feature of the old parkway as the many sycamore trees, Art Deco tunnels, and old-fashioned bridges and train trestles. Caltrans contended the curb must be removed to comply with current construction standards.

$185M Allocated to Create Jobs, Improve Calif.’s Infrastructure The California Transportation Commission (CTC) allocated $185 million to 43 transportation projects statewide. This includes $30 million from Proposition 1B, the $19.9 billion transportation bond championed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and approved by voters in 2006. More than $5.2 billion in Proposition 1B funding has been allocated to improve California’s transportation system during the past three years. The remaining $155 million in allocations came from assorted transportation accounts funded by state and federal dollars.

“When the voters passed Proposition 1B, they wanted action and action is what they’re getting. Proposition 1B is paying for vital transportation projects up and down California that will help relieve traffic congestion, improve air quality and repair our highways and bridges. At the same time, investing in our infrastructure also is strengthening our economy and creating jobs throughout the state when we need them most,” said Schwarzenegger. Highlights of the project allocations include:

• Central Valley — $19.3 million in Proposition 1B funding for two projects that will widen state Route 99 in San Joaquin County. • Sacramento County — $6.8 million from Proposition 1B for a project that will add new auxiliary lanes and widen lanes on state Route 99 from Calvine Road to Mack Road. • San Joaquin County — $2.9 million in Proposition 1B funding for a project in Tracy that will construct auxiliary, acceleration, and deceleration lanes at various locations on Interstate 205.

• Contra Costa County — $69 million to repave and repair 100 lane mi. of Interstate 680 in San Ramon, Danville and Walnut Creek from the Alameda County line to Rudgear Road. “These transportation projects will increase safety, improve goods movement and enhance ride quality for motorists who rely on the state’s highway system,” said Caltrans Director Randy Iwasaki. Bobcat 324 Compact Excavator Digs Deeper, Reaches Farther A redesigned work group allows the new Bobcat 324 compact excavator to reach farther, dig deeper and dump higher, according to the manufacturer. The 324 excavator is a conventional tail swing unit in the 1.5-ton (1.3 t) operating class. Its boom cylinder is attached to the top of the boom instead of the bottom, giving it more protection from damage while digging. It also features a lighter-weight yet durable boom fabrication with cast pivot joints. As a result, the 324 offers a maximum dig depth of 8 ft. 6 in. (2.6 m), reach at ground level of 14 ft. (4.2 m), and dump height clearance of 8 ft. 8 in. (2.6 m). The undercarriage on the 324 excavator hydraulically retracts to a width of just 38.6 in. (98 cm) for travel through gates and doorways, or alongside homes. It can then expand to 53.7 in. (136 cm) for greater performance. Overall height is just 85.5 in. (217 cm). According to AGC, Construction Jobs Caterpillar Set to Build on the Rise, Losses Less Severe Excavator Manufacturing Plant in Victoria, Texas JOBS from page 1

“Encouraging as it is to see some modest signs of progress, it is increasingly unlikely we’ll keep seeing these kinds of gains over the next few months,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “There is little to indicate that construction will be adding workers to a significant extent any time soon.” Simonson noted that the largest year-over-year increase was in Kansas, where construction employment rose 6.9 percent (4,000 jobs), followed by New Hampshire (5.0 percent, 1,100 jobs); Oklahoma (1,900 jobs, 2.8 percent); West Virginia (2.4 percent, 800 jobs); Alaska (1.9 percent, 300 jobs); and Arkansas (1.5 percent, 800 jobs). The largest percentage job decrease compared to July 2009 was in Nevada, 22.4 percent (-17,300 jobs), followed by Illinois (14.8 percent; 32,000 jobs, including many idled by a strike in early July that has since ended); Idaho (13.9 percent, 4,600 jobs); and Colorado (13.7 percent, 17,400 jobs). California lost the largest number of jobs (54,400 or 9.1 percent). Vermont and Wyoming rebounded from the largest one-month percentage losses in June to the highest monthly percent increase in construction employment in July. Vermont recouped all 600 jobs it had shed (5.5 percent) and Wyoming added

1,100 jobs (5.4 percent), followed by Oregon (5.3 percent, 3,500 jobs); New Mexico (4.0 percent, 1,700 jobs); and Louisiana (2.8 percent, 3,500 jobs). New York added the largest number of jobs in July, seasonally adjusted (1.4 percent, 4,400 jobs), closely followed by Texas (0.8 percent, 4,300 jobs). Illinois lost the highest percentage of construction jobs during the past month (7.5 percent, 14,900 jobs, mostly strike-related); followed by Hawaii (6.6 percent, 2,000 jobs) and Montana (5.4 percent, 1,200 jobs). Simonson cautioned that the improved employment picture may be attributable to a bulge in federal stimulus-funded projects that could soon fade. “There are few signs of life in privately funded construction, and state and local budget deficit projections are forcing further cuts in non-stimulus public projects,” he said. Association officials urged Congress to act on long-stalled infrastructure bills that would build on momentum from the stimulus. “Continued neglect of our aging infrastructure will damage our economic competitiveness and plunge the construction industry into another cycle of layoffs and hardship,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer.

Caterpillar also makes excavators in Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Indonesia, Japan and Russia. The new facility will manufacture the two models now made in Aurora, as well as several other models now produced in Akashi, Japan, and exported to the United States. The expansion of excavator production in the United States will allow the Japan plant to shift to better serve growing demand in Asia. The Peoria, Ill.-based company recently announced plans to quadruple excavator capacity at its plant in Xuzhou, China, to serve Chinese market demand. Caterpillar recently said it will expand a North Carolina plant that makes tight-turning skid loaders widely used in landscaping and construction, adding 325 jobs over four years. It also plans to build a new factory in Winston-Salem, N.C., producing axle units for large mining equipment that would employ about 500 full-time and contract workers. The region offered a combined $44 million in tax incentives to lure the company’s investment. In July, Caterpillar reported a 91 percent surge in second-quarter earnings driven by strong sales. Caterpillar has said emerging markets like China are driving its better results. Developed markets like North America and Europe also saw gains last quarter, but Caterpillar expects growth to be slower there.

Deere Series II ADTs Feature Onboard Weighing System John Deere’s four new Series II articulated dump trucks (ADTs), feature onboard weighing systems, tire pressure monitoring systems, and a host of control and cab changes designed to enhance comfort and productivity. All D-Series models are six-wheel-drive units that provide traction in demanding conditions. They are designed for maximum productivity, increased uptime and low daily operating costs, particularly in fuel efficiency, with Tier IIIcertified engines ranging from 265 to 413 hp (197 to 308 kW). Onboard Weighing System Onboard weighing systems are standard equipment on Deere D-Series II ADTs. They give operators overload protection, with mirror-mounted lights that alert the loading operator when the truck is nearing capacity. The payload weight information also is available through JDLink so owners and equipment managers can monitor truck utilization far away from the job site. “The onboard weighing system helps the operator manage his productivity and uptime,” said John Chesterman, product marketing manager of ADTs, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “You can monitor material moved data right from your desktop via the information transmitted through JDLink. This helps in calculating machine utilization and managing a project.” “Because John Deere ADTs already have a significant weight advantage and the lowest ground pressure among the top five ADT manufacturers, Deere trucks burn less fuel,

particularly in high time-on-grade applications and poor underfoot conditions,” Chesterman said. A fully automatic transmission with an integrated transmission retarder has improved transmission shift performance, allowing quicker acceleration out of the loading area for faster cycle times, along with decreased fuel consumption. The tire pressure monitoring system lets the operator keep track of tire pressure from the seat, eliminating guesswork and time out of the cab. The owner also can monitor tire pressures from his desktop since all of the tire information is available via JDLink.

Cab and Control Changes John Deere D-Series II ADT cabs have been updated with a modern, comfortable and convenient design, with lower sound levels and a heated air suspension seat standard. The Series II ADTs feature push-button start and stop with a standard turbo cool-down timer. To help owners reduce costs, these trucks have programmable auto-shutdown timers to save fuel, reduce noise and minimize engine use at times when the trucks are not doing productive work. Taking fleet management even further, Series II ADTs come with JDLink Ultimate standard. An updated 25-button sealed switch module with integrated transmission and dump body controls makes the units easier to operate and ensures switch durability. All John Deere ADTs feature fabricated, heavy-duty frames, axle housings and articulation joints for lower truck weights and reliable performance. The ribbed body design increases strength yet contributes to low ground pressure. The structure also is engineered to ensure a best-in-class frontal approach angle, according to the manufacturer. Deere ADTs also have ground level fueling. The 250D and 300D have dry disc brakes and axles with limited slip differentials, while the 350D and 400D have controlled traction differentials and wet disc brakes standard. “Building and site prep contractors, quarries, and road builders are going to find Series II ADTs have the fuel efficiency, productivity, durability and reliability to keep them more productive at a lower cost per ton,” Chesterman said.
