After a four-year delay, a $62 million interchange project in Las Vegas is at last under way. The Cactus Avenue interchange is being constructed between Silverado Ranch Road and St. Rose Parkway on I-15 and will include a six-lane street and overpass above the freeway to link Dean Martin Drive with Las Vegas Boulevard. The diamond interchange is expected to ease congestion in the southeastern and southwestern areas of Las Vegas Valley, said Damon Hodge, spokesman of the Nevada Department of Transportation. “The southwestern portion of town, along with southeastern portion, has been rapidly growing, Hodge said.
They have been among the most rapidly growing sectors of the Las Vegas Valley for a long time.” Commuters on both the east and west sides of I-15 have been pushing for the additional connectivity to improve the transportation flow and access to the valley, Hodge said. The most significant impact will be to the Silverado Ranch interchange, said Corey Newcome, project manager of Las Vegas Paving, the lead contractor for the project. “Silverado Ranch Road gets backed up at morning and evening peaks primarily with residents going home and to work,” Newcome said. “There are times they will be backed up for several light cycles. It’s going to be a huge help see INTERCHANGE page 50
The Louis Berger Group was contracted for the design of the project and construction support. It is slated to be finished in October 2014.
Interstate 2.0 Study...
Reason Foundation Eyes Funding Logic for Roads Speaking at an event at the Reason Foundation on the release of its new report, Interstate 2.0: Modernizing the Interstate Highway System via Toll Finance, Patrick D. Jones, executive director and CEO of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) applauded the report calling it “a serious effort to examine the costs of reconstructing and
widening our 50 year old interstate highway system using all-electronic tolling.” The new study released Sept. 12 details how much it will cost to reconstruct and widen interstate highways in all 50 states and shows how to pay for the modernization efforts with toll revenues. 520 Bridge Design Errors Send Costs, Delays Into Red SEATTLE (AP) State officials say construction delays and redesign costs could use up the Highway 520 bridge’s $100 million in reserves and eventually send the project another $128 million into the red, The Seattle Times reported. Most of the costs are related to design errors by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) that caused cracks in the first four giant pontoons. These required repairs, while see BRIDGE page 52

Volvo Rents Partners With HGTV Celebrity Ahmed Hassan Volvo Rents, known for its philanthropic efforts with Homes for Our Troops (HFOT), has partnered with popular HGTV and DIY Network star Ahmed Hassan, best known as the creative host on “Yard Crashers.” Hassan will provide the landscaping and yard makeover for three homes being built and donated by HFOT with the help of Volvo Rents. Volvo Rents and HFOT began construction in September on one of the homes in Temecula and the other two in El Cajon, Calif. The new custom homes have been designed to provide the severely injured veterans with maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently. Hassan, a licensed landscape contractor accustomed to doing blitz style makeovers, will work with Homes for Our Troops, Volvo Rents, the veterans, their friends and families, as well as the volunteers and organizations involved in the local communities. Raised by parents who taught him to dream big and to do what

you enjoy most in life, Hassan’s rural roots mixed with inner city upbringing give him the ability to connect with people of all walks of life and appreciate and admire those who work hard and sacrifice. A California native and resident, Hassan is on familiar grounds and working with familiar faces at Volvo Rents. “I’ve been a long time customer of Volvo Rents,” said Hassan. “When I learned about their partnership with Homes for Our Troops and what they were doing to help better the lives our service men and women, I immediately
decided to get involved. I knew this project and the cause driving it was something I could definitely help with.” Receiving a new home in Temecula, Calif., is Army SSG Wallace Fanene, who returned home from his second deployment to Iraq after losing his right leg and right lower arm in an IED explosion. A husband and father, Fanene said the new custom home will “take away the last margin of struggle I have had to obtain my normal life again.” Neighboring homes being built in El Cajon, Calif., will provide the
same relief to Marine Cpl Travis Greene and Army SGT Odin Ayala. Greene returned home from his third deployment to Iraq when he sustained significant injuries during an IED attack while assisting in a med-evac of another wounded Marine. The injuries resulted in the amputation of both Cpl. Green’s legs. Returning home from his third deployment to Afghanistan, Army SGT Odin Ayala sustained significant injuries after stepping on an IED while on foot patrol, causing him to lose both of his legs and substantial injuries to his left hand.
Still undergoing treatment and therapy for his injuries, Ayala said the home will help him focus on his recovery and his future. “Since partnering with Homes for Our Troops in 2011, we have had the opportunity to help build custom homes for nearly 50 veterans,” said Matt Tavianini, vice president of sales and marketing of Volvo Rents. “It is something that resonates so deeply with all of us here and we could not be more grateful to not only work with our nation’s heroes, but to be able to give something back to them is invaluable.” Additional sponsors donating everything from manpower to hand tools, to irrigation installation and funding for the projects include local businesses Hunter Industries, Village Nurseries, Corona Tools and Genie Industries. New Caterpillar Waste Buckets Push, Lift High Volume Caterpillar introduces two new wheel loader bucket designs — the dozing bucket and the load-andcarry bucket — for solid waste handling in transfer stations and recycling centers. The buckets are specifically designed to enhance the productivity of Cat small and medium wheel loaders in waste applications. The buckets range from 6.0 to 14.0 cu. yd. (4.6 to 10.7 cu m) and complement Cat wheel loaders ranging from the 924K to the 980K. Two distinct types of waste buckets give the fleet manager the ability to choose the optimum based on the facility layout and the specific tasks to be performed. Both types of buckets can be equipped with bolt-on cutting
edges or rubber edges to suit the requirements of the facility. Dozing Bucket Pushes High Volume The Cat dozing bucket has a shallow throat and a taller profile than a standard bucket. It is specifically designed to push loads along the floor to a hole or hopper that feeds a hauler or processing machine below. The bucket design has high volume for its size, The buckbecause it pushes the ets range from 6.0 load rather than carry- to 14.0 cu. yd. (4.6 to 10.7 cu ing it. In addition to its m) and complement Cat wheel loaders high volume, the ranging from the 924K to the 980K.
strength of the dozing bucket is its fast loading capability due to its deep floor design. Cat dozing buckets also feature robust design and construction for extended durability. Visibility to the load is improved with the use of bars instead of screens. Load-and-Carry Bucket Lifts High Volume The Cat load-and-carry bucket has a deeper throat and less height compared to the dozing bucket, which enables it to carry high volumes. It’s designed for light weight materials and achieves a fill factor of 1.3 or greater. The bucket can be used for stockpiling or loading haulers or
pushing away from trucks tipping on the floor. The bucket design enables the loader to work in any facility layout — loading below grade, partial grade separation or at the same level. The load-and-carry bucket has tamping capabilities to help ensure haulers are fully loaded. Cat load-and-carry buckets feature high strength construction and durability. Bars, rather than screens, provide improved sight lines through the upper part of the bucket and to the load. For more information, visit www.cat.com/waste. Fecon Introduces Excavator Leading Edge Offers New Powered Stump Grinder Multi-Ripper Talon Bucket Fecon Inc.’s SH360 excavator stumper is the newest addition to its stump grinder product line. The SH360 mounts to any 20+ton (18 t) excavator via a bolt-on mount custom fit to the particular excavator. Hydraulics and drive train can be set up for the power provided by the excavator in the 45 to 65 gpm (170 to 246 Lpm) range and up to 5500 psi. For ultimate performance the SH360 can be set up for the Fecon BHP170 and BHP250 self-contained powerpacks with Fecon power management that deliver 65 to 105 gpm (246 to 397 Lpm). The SH360 is designed for those hard to reach stumps that cannot be safely accessed with normal stumper carriers. For more information, call 800/528-3113 or visit www.fecon.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) The SH360 is designed for those hard to reach stumps that cannot be safely accessed with normal stumper carriers.
Leading Edge Attachments Inc. now offers the multiripper talon bucket as the new addition to the multiripper SHARC product line. LEA multi-ripper products often replace hammers, blasting and rock trenchers. Designed mainly for utility pipeline contractors, the new multiripper talon bucket works on the same principle as the multi-ripper bucket, except the bucket is very narrow, and the leading edges have been redesigned so that the center rib can be eliminated, thus improving capacity fill and dumping for a narrow bucket. The performance of this style of maximum breakout “one tooth at a time” bucket exceeds all other designs of rock bucket ripper combinations and has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars by avoiding the use of rock trenchers, hammers and blasting, according to the manufacturer. ConExpo 1981 ConExpo 1981 — Everything’s Truly Bigger in Texas This ConExpo article was published in Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) right after ConExpo 1981 concluded in January. This and other ConExpo articles to follow will be part of a continuing series that take a look back at ConExpos past through the reporting of CEG. We hope you enjoy these retros as much as we did searching for them deep in our archives. The words big, bigger, biggest and jumbo were commonplace in Houston, Texas, during ConExpo ’81 at the Astrodome Complex between Jan. 25 and 30. Big applied to the city of Houston, its expressways, the Astrodome, the Astrodome area, the equipment that was on display, from towering Grove hydraulic cranes to 19 yard hydraulic shovels to monster 1,000 hp bulldozers, to the super boxes in the upper reaches of the Astrodome itself. Another big was the crowd. Estimates ranged as high as 200,000, well exceeding the guestimates by the CIMA people. One of the things that make ConExpo ’81 the greatest show on earth is the diversity and breadth of the exhibitors. Nearly every conceivable type of equipment and service a contractor may want to use was represented at ConExpo. There were also several surprises. Probably the biggest surprise was the foreign invasion of a new wave of Japanese and European competitors moving in to stake out a position in the already crowded North American marketplace. The newcomers, including such giants as Komatsu, Hitachi, and I.B.H. Holding, demonstrated their ability to build extensive product lines; they are certainly to be considered a serious threat by U.S. manufacturers. New technology, new lines and new ideas abounded at ConExpo in January. Some equipment was bigger, more powerful and, at the same time, more fuel efficient than previous models. Other pieces of equipment were more compact, versatile and maneuverable than before. And in some cases, manufacturers added new technology to old standards giving them new viability and preventing obsolescence. For those not interested in construction equipment, ConExpo ’81 provided a wide variety of other activities. The daring could ride a gondola lifted by a giant FMC crane

Houston, Texas to an observation post a couple hundred feet off the ground. Case set up a little theater and let people operate live equipment. Other manufacturers had working models of their equipment, which the public could control. Even history buffs could find some of the antique machines, which were revolutionary in their time, interesting. The antiques provided some insight into how much construction equipment has changed the way we live. Not all the equipment in ConExpo ’81 was brand new. Blaw-Knox went the other way and displayed a restored 1930 paver, the first automatic asphalt paving machine in history. It was equipped with rollers for compacting the asphalt as it was laying it. This recently upgraded model is available in North American markets. The Gehl RS5-19 is designed with a compact frame and tight turning radius of 11 ft. (3.35 m), allowing it to maneuver in low buildings and confined job sites. The RS519 is a low-profile machine with an overall height of 6 ft. 4 in. (1.93 m), making operation in buildings, garages and in confined areas easy. The boom reaches to a height of 19 ft. 1 in. (5.8 m) and features the same welded box-section design that is on the Gehl Dynalift telescopic handlers. Internal wet disc service brakes are standard equipment, for better stopping capability and longer life. A SAHR (spring-applied, hydraulic-release) parking brake, which is automatically applied when the engine is shut off, or manually engaged by pressing a rocker switch, also is standard. The view from the spaciously designed ROPS/FOPS canopy is a full 360 degrees. An enclosed cab is optional with front and top windows, a door and a heater/defroster for use in areas where operators need protection from the weather. Optional air-condi-

Mack to Begin Production of DME-Powered Vehicles in 2015 Mack Trucks will begin production of dimethyl ether (DME)powered Mack Pinnacle Axle Back models in 2015. DME, a non-toxic, clean-burning alternative fuel, offers many environmental and societal benefits, including that it can be made from multiple sustainable feedstocks. One of the most significant advantages of the fuel is that it produces no soot, eliminating the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). DME can provide up to a 95 percent CO2 reduction compared with diesel when produced from biomass or biogas. Furthermore, DME can be made from North America’s plentiful domestic natural gas supply, food
waste, animal waste, grass clippings and other sustainable sources, offering the potential to help reduce dependency on foreign oil. “The benefits of DME are numerous,” said Kevin Flaherty, president of Mack Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “It’s better for the environment because it burns clean, and it can be made from sources that are domestically available. Mack trucks are built in the U.S.A., and with DME, we’ll be powering our vehicles with a fuel made in America as well.” The Pinnacle Axle Back model powered by DME will be equipped with a Mack MP8 engine, offering a 13-L engine to easily handle
heavy workloads. The Pinnacle Axle Back model is ideal for highway van trailer applications, bulk hauling, flatbed and dump trailer jobs. DME has the same performance and energy efficiency as diesel. The fuel is compression-ignited, is handled and stored similar to propane and does not need cryogenic temperatures or high tank pressures. “Mack is a leader in natural gas technology development, and we believe DME has tremendous potential as an effective way to use the country’s abundant natural gas reserves to power heavy-duty trucks,” Flaherty said. “DME is unique in that it is clean, easy to
handle, safe to store and will be made domestically, benefitting everyone.” DME can be produced by smallscale production units that convert biogas and natural gas into the fuel. Oberon Fuels recently announced its first innovative production unit would go online in June in California’s Imperial Valley region. “Oberon Fuels has developed small-scale, skid-mounted production units that can cost- effectively convert a variety of feedstocks to DME,” said Rebecca Boudreaux, president of Oberon Fuels. “With these small-scale production units, regional fuel markets are created, offering the potential to bypass the
infrastructure challenges of using an alternative fuel while also enabling the use of locally available feedstocks.” Mack’s DME-powered Pinnacle model will join an alternative fuel lineup that includes the natural gaspowered Mack TerraPro cabover and low entry models and the natural gas-powered Mack Pinnacle, which made its debut during the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show. Mack also plans to launch a natural gas-powered Mack Granite. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Kenworth Contest Winners Earn Special Test Drive, Tour When Jon Kibler of Bowmansville, N.Y., and Bryce Pinnell of Morrisonville, Ill., heard they were winners in the recent Kenworth T880 Test Drive Contest, they especially looked forward to becoming among the first truck drivers to drive the new Kenworth T880. Introduced at the 2013 MidAmerica Trucking Show, the T880 builds upon Kenworth’s 90-year heritage. The T880 is standard with the PACCAR MX-13 engine, which has ratings up to 500 hp (373 kW) and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque and offers excellent fuel efficiency, high reliability and durability, lightweight design and low cost of ownership, according to the manufacturer. Kenworth hosted the two winners at events in both Columbus and Chillicothe, Ohio. In Columbus, the group attended the Kenworth Natural Gas Summit customer event and learned more about Kenworth’s extensive natural gas truck line-up. The following morning, they

John Deere 460E ADT Challenges Andes Mountains This past May, engineers from John Deere traveled to the Atacama Desert Region of northern Chile to test the performance of the 460E articulated dump truck (ADT) at high altitude. The mountains of Chile are filled with active mining sites that need the hauling capacity of the 460E ADT. Engineers worked to ensure the truck would perform reliably at this extreme altitude as well as exceed customers’ expectations in the rugged mountains. John Deere identified a Chilean mine site at high elevation that would provide a challenging work environment for the ADT. Once a site was chosen, the ADT was shipped from the United States to Iquique, Chile, on a cargo ship. When the truck arrived in port, it was transported to the mine site located approximately four hours from the coast, deep into the Andes Mountains. The 460E ADT was introduced in North America with the John Deere 13.5L engine, but the high altitude of Chile holds unique challenges. Preliminary testing took place in Colorado at 10,000 ft. (3,048 m) to better understand the potential challenges the extreme altitude of the Chilean mountains may present. During the testing in Chile, the ADT did numerous performance and cold start tests, and conquered a 16,000 ft. (4,877 m) mountain to prove its extreme capabilities. The team left Chile with a better understanding of the high altitude demands on equipment, as well as some product changes that will ensure the 460E ADT will excel in the demanding environments of South America, according to the company. Engineers from John Deere traveled to the Atacama Desert Region of northern Chile to test the performance of the 460E articulated dump truck (ADT) at high altitude.

E-Series Called ‘Good for the Environment, Easy on Budget’ “They’re good for the environment and they’re easy on the budget.” That’s how Constantino Lannes, president of Sennebogen LLC defined the most recent round of design updates featured in the new 830, 835 and 840 model material handlers introduced recently to the North American market. “E-Series Sennebogen material handlers mark the beginning of a new generation of machines building on fuel-saving and environmentally-friendly efficiencies throughout their power train and hydraulic system. The result is a line-up of Tier IV-compliant machines that also reduce operating costs.” The Sennebogen purpose-built material handlers are engineered for continuous use in demanding applications such as scrap recycling and demolition, ports facilities and log handling. Introduced by Sennebogen as the “Green Efficiency” models, the E-Series builds on Sennebogen’s established standards for performance with low fuel consumption, operator comfort and maximum safety, according to the manufacturer. Efficient Power Technology A key feature of the “Green Efficiency” design is the “EcoMode” and no-load automatic stop function. The “Eco-Mode” setting combines reduced engine speed with an automatic idle control and a start-stop system that will effectively reduce fuel consumption. Due to a new intercooler design with direct mechanical drive, the E-Series fan system delivers maximum air supply right from the start. With an additional temperature-dependant oil and water cooler, the system’s materials and components all reach their operating temperature quickly and uniform-
ly, which in turn reduces overall energy demand. Minimum Background Noise, Even at Full Load On all models, Cummins engines provide ample reserve power, even under high loads, setting new standards for low noise emissions. With reinforced cab windows and insulated sound transmission paths, sound pressure in the operator’s cab measures 4 dB lower — a noise reduction of more than half. In all models, NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions have been halved by the E-Series exhaust aftertreatment system and particulate matter has been reduced by 90 percent. As well, the 830, 835 and 840 are still offered in electric-drive models, which can reduce operating costs by up to 50 percent more
when compared to diesel drives. Powered by 100 percent emissionfree electric motors, these clean electric-drive material handlers offer low noise, vibration free operation for an even more comfortable operator environment, according to the manufacturer. A Diverse Range of Equipment and “Green Efficiency” Technology Numerous component options and engineering configurations make the new E-Series models the ideal material handling machines in the scrap yard, at the port or in forestry applications. With new slewing drive systems for rapid duty cycles plus extremely robust hydraulic cylinders, ESeries machines are tailored to take on the toughest material handling tasks. The elevating maXCab comfort
cab offers enhanced visibility and operator ergonomics. Its distinctive sliding door with entry step and handrail, featured as standard on ESeries, provides safe access to the operator station. The SENCON control system and an array of periphery cameras help the operator to operate safely, even in con-
gested and busy work zones. The E-Series models also make maintenance and servicing tasks easy. Centrally accessible service points and simple, computer-free engineering save time and effort in everyday operation while increasing uptime through every service cycle.
The Sennebogen 835 E-Series shows its strengths in demanding continuous use at the scrap yard.
With a wide range of mobility choices such as the rubber-tired undercarriage or wide track crawler and several optional boom and stick configurations, the Sennebogen E-Series models adapt easily to any task where large quantities of material have to be moved quickly and consistently. For more information, call 704/347-4910 or visit www.sennebogen-na.com. The elevating maXCab and 49 ft. 2 in.(15 m) cantilever arm render the Sennebogen 830 E-Series particularly flexible and safe.

we’re using a lot excavators, loaders, cranes, bulldozers and scrapers,” Newcome said. “We must shift the traffic back and forth so there is a lot of traffic movement. That’s always a safety concern for the construction workers and for the public.
After a four-year delay, a $62 million interchange project in Las Vegas is at last under way. The Cactus Avenue interchange is being constructed between Silverado Ranch Road and St. Rose Parkway on I-15.
We don’t shut down the interstate at all. We take a lane in the middle of the night so we don’t have a significant impact on traffic. At times we are moving traffic around 24/7, and at times we are working around the clock. Once we get the traffic moved we are working the day shift.” The project was funded through the federal government with about $38.9 million going for the actual construction and the balance for design, engineering, the purchase of right-of-way and administration. The Louis Berger Group was contracted for the design of the project and construction support. It is slated to be finished in October 2014. ket accepted products manufactured in other existing Bomag facilities located in Oklahoma, Germany or China. The company is making this move in order to maximize its manufacturing efficiencies, maintain competitive product costs and better support its customers, according to the company. As part of its corporate strategy to provide “best in class” product support, the company will build a new facility to accommodate a parts distribution center, training facility for sales and service, assembly to accommodate special features for the North American market and a corporate office complex. In conjunction with this move the company also is announcing its intent to enter into a long-term lease with a facility based in Oklahoma that will focus on providing the engineering, technical support and manufacturing of asphalt pavers, material transfer vehicles and reclaimer/stabilizers specifically designed for North and South America as well as other key export markets. “In order to improve our leading position in the marketplace we felt it was imperative to consolidate our manufacturing operations in order to leverage economies of scale and maximize our competitive position,” said Joerg Unger, president of Bomag, Worldwide. “Our intent is to strengthen our North American organization with the objective of being closer to our customers in service support, product development and product specific engineering utilizing all potential synergies within the Bomag Worldwide organization. The North American market is the largest market in the world and is strategic to our company’s long term success.” For more information, visit www.bomag.com. Report Calls for Lifting Fed Tolling Prohibition REPORT from page 1
Turnpike Association, the worldwide association representing toll facility owners and operators and the businesses that serve them, joined several other groups at the press conference, including the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), Associated General Contractors (AGC), Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and Transportation Transformation Group (T2). “When the interstate highway system was first being built in the 1950s, the emphasis was on paying to get it built, creating an interconnected national system and creating immediate jobs and economic growth. The Highway Trust Fund is one valuable tool to maintain roadways, bridges and tunnels, but it is not funded at a level needed to address the rebuilding of our interstate system. The recommendations outlined in the Reason Foundation report are critical to helping bridge the huge funding gap to fund our nation’s transportation infrastructure. Tolling is one proven funding option to address this huge gap,” Jones said at the press conference.
The new report, Interstate 2.0: Modernizing the Interstate Highway System via Toll Finance, makes the case for lifting the federal prohibition on tolling existing lanes of the Interstate highway system. The report states: “…as the reality of the cost of interstate reconstruction and modernization sinks in at the legislative level, and the low cost and convenience of all-electronic toll collection becomes better understood, elected officials may catch up with public sentiment that is already receptive to tolling as better than (or less bad than) increases in transportation taxes to pay for major new investments in highway infrastructure.” The report said, “The one thing states need from Congress in the next reauthorization is permission for all states to use toll financing for the specific purpose of replacing worn-out Interstate pavement and bridges with new and better ones.” For more information, visit: www.IBTTA.org.

Estimated Completion Date Extended By Two Years BRIDGE from page 1
others have been redesigned. The estimate for when the floating bridge will be completed also has changed — from late 2014 to April 2016. Information released Aug. 23 on the DOT Web site comes a month after new Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson and 520 program administrator Julie Meredith held a news conference to reassure the public that the bridge project’s $250 million reserve fund is sound. The state doesn’t have concrete plans for finding more money if the project requires it. An Aug. 16 letter from Peterson instructs the 520 team to look for cost savings, negotiate aggressively and work with the state treasurer’s office on financing options. DOT spokesman Lars Erickson said $228 million is the upper end of estimated cost overruns and the DOT will try to negotiate downward from there with contractors, (This story also can be found on including Kiewit, the primary partner for the Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at floating section of the bridge. The DOT has money to proceed through www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
mid-2014 while it makes plans for the rest of the project. State lawmakers failed to pass a new 10year highway package before they went home this year, and the latest news makes that a tougher sell for DOT, said state Rep. Ed Orcutt of Kalama, the ranking Republican on the House Transportation Committee. “If they want a gas tax, to build more projects, they’ve got to get things right. They’ve lost a lot of trust,” he said. Orcutt said he doesn’t know how to react if the 520 fund “goes negative.” Conceivably, if some other project is done under budget, money could be shifted around, he said. House Transportation Chairwoman Judy Clibborn, D-Mercer Island, tried to allocate at least $100 million more for 520 in the failed package in the spring, and could be expected to try again.
