News of forest fires generally calls to mind the courageous souls who risk their lives to fight them. As it turns out, there’s another component to the battle — heavy equipment and lots of it, too. “Without equipment, there is no way we could fight fires,” said Tracy Wrolson acting assistant district forest supervisor of the Oregon Department of Forestry. “Equipment is 100 percent essential to firefighting activity.” And this year in the Pacific Northwest, there was plenty of that with some 40
crews of 20 people each working fires that raged throughout Washington and Oregon. The largest in Oregon was the 110,000-acre Canyon Creek Complex fire. Ignited by lightening on Aug. 12, it destroyed 43 homes and damaged more than 50 other structures in eastern Oregon. The heavy equipment comes into play at various phases of the fires. Early on, crews will use it to contain the blaze, such as with the bulldozers used to build fire lines. “Sometimes in conjunction with the dozers you might see hot saws, an excavator with a saw on the end,” said Christie
The upgrade and widening of state Route 76 (an eastwest highway) in California’s San Diego County, continues with the second installment of work on the east segment by Ames Construction Inc. The $76 million project will convert 5.2 mi. (8.36 km) of road from two lanes to four lanes. The first phase of the east work, the construction of the SR 76/I-15 interchange, began in October 2012, and was completed in summer 2013, by Flatiron Construction. Phase 2 of the project is to widen and realign the roadway from South Mission Road to SR 76/I-15 Interchange. This phase began in November 2014, and should be completed in August 2017. “This is the last of the projects on this major link between Interstate 5 and I-15 and will complete one of the high-priority transportation projects included in the region’s TransNet Early Action Program,” stated a Caltrans fact sheet for the project. “Once completed, the new four-lane highway will be a key transportation asset to help meet future travel demand. Texas Reviews Water Grid EL PASO, Texas (AP) A proposal to study the possibility of a statewide network that would pump water across vast Texas should be sidetracked until more immediate attempts at water conservation are examined, a top official in Texas’ largest environmental group said.
“If we're going to do a study, we need a comprehensive study of how efficient we can become,” said Ken Kramer, water resources chairman of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club. The El Paso Times reported a proposed water grid study from two
Republican state lawmakers, Rep. Lyle Larson of San Antonio and Sen. Charles Perry of Lubbock, failed in the most recent legislative session but remains a likely topic for lawmakers when they return in 2017. Texas is facing water see TEXAS page 46

Permanent animal crossings underneath the highway are being constructed to facilitate safe wildlife movement through the river corridor, as well as directional fencing.

Construction contractors face it frequently — that hollow feeling in the gut that there isn’t enough time. The clock ticks faster on construction projects; slower when getting a cavity filled at the dentist. These are just the facts of life. Time is money to owners, contractors and users of the project. From the owner’s perspective there is lost revenue by not receiving return on investment, cash flow crunch, potential alienation and loss of clients/tenants, extended interest payments and negative marketing impacts. From the users’ perspective, there are financial implications similar to owners. Delays in upgraded facilities translate into operating at below optimum efficiency, resulting in higher user cost. Delays in constructing or rehabilitating infrastructure negatively affect businesses and the public atlarge. Time implications from the contractor’s perspective include potential liquidated damages (negative) and incentive/disincentive payments. Delays result in extended overhead costs and puts a crunch on critical cash flow. Extending project durations limits the contractor’s bonding capacity and ability to bid more work (lost opportunity cost). Inefficient time management results in higher labor and equipment costs. A reputation for late completions is bad for business, especially in negotiated work. In today’s intensely time-driven business environment, superior planning, scheduling and control are vital. Time issues swirl around control. Lack of control over time creates discomfort, while having control over time creates a sense of ease. Here are tips, tactics and devices that will help the contractor have control over time: • Notebook and pen — A paper notebook can be a lifesaver. What it lacks in snazziness, it makes up for in functionality and flexibility. Date each page and use the notebook for anything and everything. Make “to do” lists, documentations, notes, ideas, time records, mileage and expenses, names and phone numbers and reminders. There are no rules. It can be a junk drawer for odds and ends or a disciplined, sorted method for recording completed tasks, to dos and plans. The notebook can function as a diary of what took place on any day or an intermediary capture that is later transferred to a computer, tablet or smartphone. Any style notebook
will do. The tape-bound, black-marble composition notebooks are especially inexpensive and work well. • Smartphone — Today’s smartphones can function like the Swiss Army knife of time management. The three forms of communication — telephone, text, and email — all show a time-date record, which can be helpful. There’s a camera and video camera for documenting completed tasks, projects or issues. A tape recorder, reminder alarms, clock, calendar, weather report and countless helpful apps, which are free or can be purchased. Three helpful apps for construction contractors hoping to tame the time beast are: Toggl — Say what’s to be done, start the timer and stop it when done. Events can be coded to see what’s consuming more time than it should. My Minutes — The focus is on setting goals. Schedule an activity and the amount of time it should take. The app gives a nudge when out of time, or a virtual pat on the back when the goal is achieved. Construction Manager — Allows the transfer of maintenance logs, daily reports, project estimates and time sheets. Salespeople and estimators can create onsite estimates for construction and repair projects. • Learn to say “No.” — Most people are agreeable. Ask and they’ll make time to do it. These “it will only take a few minutes” tasks, discussions or meetings can easily bollix up the golden rule of time management. For each day one needs to identify the two or three tasks that are the most crucial, and do those first. Once those are done, the day has already been a success. It is critical to exercise the prerogative to say no. Jane Collingwood of Psych Central, an online mental health resource, offers these “Top Tips for Saying No”: — Keep your response simple. If you want to say no, be firm and direct. — Buy yourself some time. — Consider a compromise. — Separate refusal from rejection. — Don’t feel guilty for saying no. — Be true to yourself. Time is a force. It is relentless, untiring and never stops. For the construction contractor, the best that can be done is to control it and manage it. SDLG Wheel Loader Proves Valuable for Rental Market Motion Machinery is a Texas-based equipment rental company with a fleet of more than 80 machines. The company has a wide array of equipment, including machines from several premium brands. But two factors were cutting into the Tomball company’s bottom line: initial acquisition costs and time-consuming maintenance. In a move toward a more profitable wheel loader lineup, Motion Machinery purchased a SDLG LG938L on the recommendation of Conrad Construction, another Texas-based company using the brand’s machines. The initial price of the wheel loader was significantly lower than premium machines, and the company since found that the loader’s easy-access design will reduce the amount of time and money spent on keeping it running. “I have a friend from Conrad Construction who had recently purchased an SDLG wheel loader, and he loved it,” said Don Cannon, owner of Motion Machinery. “I previously worked as a dealer, so I know that acquisition and maintenance costs are the key to making money in the rental mar-
ning, the quicker it can make money for its owner. All SDLG wheel loaders feature easyaccess engine compartments on all sides of the machine. Most of the machine’s vital parts are accessible within seconds, reducing the amount of labor hours needed for maintenance or repairs. The LG938L also has dry disc brakes that are easy to access for changing brake pads. Cleaning and routine tasks are simpler and take less time than when working on premium machines, according to the manufacturer. “We rarely get to see the machine at our yard,” Cannon said. “Even better, the renters return the machine feeling very satisfied. We have had no issues or complaints. The SDLG wheel loader performs just as well as any of the other premium brand equipment I have owned.” The LG938L has provided other benefits to Motion Machinery’s fleet, too. Its no-frills configuration is easier for rental customers to learn and operate, according to the company. The added features of premium brands often mean more time spent figuring out Easy maintenance and reduced investment generate more ROI for rental houses.

ket. The LG938L’s price was right where we needed it to be and the easy maintenance will save us money over the long haul.” Cannon said premium brand wheel loaders are becoming increasingly complex, making it more difficult for small shop owners to repair and maintain their machines. They have to spend more time figuring out how to work on the machines, which costs money, and the actual maintenance and repairs inherently take longer. In the rental market, downtime means a hit on the bottom line. The quicker a machine is up and run-
how to use them. Also, the company doesn’t have to pass on the price of those extra features to customers. “We didn’t have to pay for any of the extra features that our rental customers don’t need,” Cannon said. “And we don’t have to charge our customers for features they won’t use. We were able to get all of the attachments we needed to ensure the LG938L would be flexible and able to work on different applications, too.” The LG938L is a 2.5 cu. yd. (1.9 cu m) wheel loader with an operating weight of
23,150 lbs. (10,500 kg). It features a Tier IV Deutz engine with 160 hp and 530 lb.ft. (240 kg m) of torque; ZF transmission; dry disc brakes; a hydraulic quick coupler and third function hydraulics; a modern fit and finish with high visibility; and an operator-friendly cab. It also comes with a 12month, 1,500-hour warranty. Another big plus for Motion Machinery is SDLG’s support and service network. The company purchased the wheel loader from Dallas-based ROMCO Equipment, a dealer it had worked with for years and trusted. ROMCO assisted in picking out a model that would be ideal for the local rental market, and outfitted the machine with the requisite bucket and fork attachments. SDLG partners with dealerships that can facilitate the brand’s 21st Century Product Support. The brand now features locations across North America, all with dealers that have significant time spent working in their local markets.
“Between the price, the great features and the dealer support, the SDLG wheel loader has been a great piece of equipment to own for the rental market,” Cannon said. “I have been very satisfied and I have recommended the SDLG brand to other equipment owners. I am even considering adding more SDLG wheel loaders to my fleet when the need arises.” Motion Machinery, located in Tomball, Texas, has been serving the local construction industry for more than 18 years, and owner Don Cannon has more than 40 years of experience in the industry. The company owns more than 80 pieces of equipment, and prides itself on quality customer service. Motion Machinery is a full service shop providing equipment rental, repair and sales. ROMCO Equipment, based in Dallas, Texas, was founded in 1961 and provides equipment for the construction, mining, paving and aggregate industries. The familyowned business has 10 branches across Texas. Work just began on the pavement rehabilitation of I-8 from Crestwood Road to Imperial County Line in Southern California.
Work just began on the pavement rehabilitation of I-8 from Crestwood Road to Imperial County Line in Southern California in the California Department of Transportation’s District 11 (San Diego and Imperial County), a $34.885 million contract that was awarded to Coffman Specialties Inc. The rural project covers 16.6 mi. (26.7 km) of an east-west road (Post Miles 61.2 to 77.8, two lanes in each direction) and nine bridges. This stretch of roadway was built in stages between 1967-1971 and has experienced some renovation work in the past. “Between 168,000 to 136,000 perday travel on this section of I-8 daily,” said Edward Cartagena, media information officer, Caltrans District 11. “The pavement has exceeded its service life and beginning to revel. The expected lifespan of the new roadbed is 10 to 15 years. Caltrans maintains and improves see COFFMAN page 14
Critics Scrutinize LA River Master Plan The Los Angeles landscape architecture and design community was surprised by the recent announcement that Frank Gehry is creating a new master plan for the redevelopment of the 51-mi. (82 km) stretch of the Los Angeles River that runs through the city. Before The Los Angeles Times published the details of the new Gehry-led team, there were no public discussions about this new approach or the selection of the new design team. Also, it’s not clear what will happen to the approved 2007 Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan (LARRMP). The LARRMP guided the development of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Los Angeles River Ecosystem Feasibility Study. The study’s ambitious “Alternative 20” plan, which will ecologically restore an 11mi. (17.7 km) stretch of the river and improve public access, was unanimously approved by the Corps in August. Local landscape architecture professionals have voiced
concerns with Gehry’s appointment by the Los Angeles River Revitalization Corporation. In addition to threatening Congressional approval of the Corps’ billion-dollar-plus Alternative 20 plan due to confusion with this new, unclear planning effort, there is concern about the lack of a public process. The project’s grand scope means the potential impact on the city of Los Angeles and the eight southern gateway cities to the south is immense. The LARRMP was born out of grassroots efforts and planned with intense community participation. During public outreach, specific projects were identified and championed by the neighborhoods most impacted. Any plan aimed at building on the LARRMP and Alternative 20 must seek public input from the beginning to gain support and assure meaningful outcomes. see GEHRY page 20

the state’s highway system on an ongoing basis as needed.” The contract start date was April 14, 2015 and the current contract completion date is February 16, 2016. Major items of work for the contract include removing approximately 4 in. (10 cm) of existing roadway pavement and replacing it with new AC pavement, removal and replacement of AC dike along the shoulders for stormwater control, installation of approach slabs at each bridge structure, and removal and replacement of the existing guardrail. “This project will be a challenge for us,“ said Jim Coffman, the firm’s senior vice president. “The existing roadway has been overlaid multiple times or patched and this can be a challenge when we start milling to remove the top 4 in. (10 cm) of pavement. The profile grain might be a challenge depending on what is going to happen based on the overlays. We’re in the process of surveying the existing roadway to ensure that we will provide the right profile once we start our operations.” The typical thickness of the existing pavement section is approximately 9 in. For the new road base, .33 ft. of the upper pavement section is being removed and replaced with a base layer of .1 ft. of 3/8 in. Type A Conventional Hot Mix Asphalt, a SAMI interlayer approximately 3/8 in. thick, and finally a cap layer of .2 ft. of 3/4 in. Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt. “Another one of the challenges is that we’re in the mountains and 60 miles away from the asphalt plant,” said Coffman, “so whatever we mill out with a cold planer, we have to put back that same shift. The timing of deliveries will be critical. We will have to precisely measure the work as we’re putting in three different layers as required. We’re also required to initial profile the existing surface and meet a certain criteria for smoothness.” The plan is to do the work one lane at a time in order to minimize the impact on traffic. “We’ll do the lane and then the shoulder,”
said Coffman. “We get to close one lane in each direction during the construction period.” The Caltrans contract does not require the use of concrete barriers, but Coffman Specialties is looking at setting up some moving barrier systems to follow the work — a plan that it will discuss with Caltrans. “We’ll also use crash attenuator-type trucks behind the work to alert people to stay out of the lane,” said Coffman, “so it will not only just be cones. Protecting the public and our crews is a priority.” When the project is completed, Coffman expects that about 175,000 tons (158,757 t) of asphalt will be removed and replaced with 55,000 tons (49,895 t) of Type A asphalt, 15,000 tons (13,607 t) of SAMI, and 115,000 tons (104,326 t) of rubberized asphalt. “The material we are removing will not be recycled,” he said. “In California you have a different situation because there are very few places where you can mine aggregates due to environmental constraints, and most of those sites, because of the rehabilitation work that has been ongoing, are already full. “In this particular instance, because the project is rural and in the mountains, some of the materials can be re-used locally,” he said. “The road goes through two Indian Reservations and lands owned by some private property owners. Many of the local roads are arterial and currently dirt roads. So we’re going to do two things — take some of it to a designated licensed waste area to refill an existing hole that is there and work with the Indian tribes and homeowners to place six inches of milling on their roads to be a permeable-type driving surface to decrease the dust, help with erosion, and other associated issues.” Coffman Specialties is doing all of the major asphalt work, all of the work for the approach slabs, but is bringing in Gerdau Reinforcing to do the reinforcing (epoxy coated) rebar for the approach slabs to the bridges and J Francis Co. will be responsible for the rehabilitation of the bridge decks and replacing the joint-steel between the approach slabs and the bridge. Other subcontractors include
Ferreira Construction for metal beam guard rail, and Payco Specialties for pavement markings. The project will see Coffman have his crews work a long single shift as he anticipates that they will be able to replace one-lane mile per-day. “Currently the lane closure chart allows us to close the lane down for 10 hours in one direction and 10 hours in the other direction,” he said, “so we’ll work the entire shift to do that. After we replace the road, we also have to temporary stripe it on the fly. We’re trying to get the state to allow us to go to a more staggered, longer shift, so we can potentially utilize a double-shift. However, we are going to try to limit this to daylight hours as we prefer safer daytime hours than night hours.” At peak, there will be more than 30 Coffman and subcontractor personnel on site, along with 35 to 45 trucks servicing the job. A trailer that has been used by the Border Patrol is being rented as a field office, as well as a local yard to store equipment and vehicles and building materials. Vehicles also will be parked along the median to be in place for the next day’s work. Trucks are crucial for this project and Coffman is deploying 45 double-bottomed transfer trucks for hauling the asphalt to the job site. At least 10 trucks will be used to take the millings away from the job site and 25 plus will be hauling asphalt from the plant to the job site. “Another unique thing about this project is that Caltrans is requiring the use of a transfer vehicle — this is one of the first jobs where they’ve done that,” said Coffman, “so we have to use one in order to pave the job. We’ll have two pavers on the job — one to lay the base course, even if we have single-shifts, and another to lay the finish course down. We could probably do it with one, but in case one breaks down, we have another so that we can continue and have a contingency plan.” The project is located 75 mi. (120.7 km) from Coffman’s main office/yard. An onsite mechanic will be on hand to do immediate repairs and scheduled maintenance.
Equipment operators do their daily checks and report any problems to the foremen and the mechanic. While the equipment and vehicles are thoroughly checked out prior to being sent to a work site, repairing them is made easier for Coffman’s eight mechanics, who are paired with a maintenance truck (placed on a Peterbilt chassis) that combine storage for tools, spare parts, fuel and oils. “We have two asphalt pavers, eight concrete pavers and four portable concrete plants that we operate within a 500-mile geographical radius of San Diego,” said Coffman, “so we have extensive portable equipment that we use for similar jobs like the one on I-8. Our mechanics are all linked to the home office with iPads and they have computers to check the equipment.” While the mechanical systems of the equipment and vehicles are not monitored electronically, each piece has a GPS tracking system to help maximize productivity, including the filling of the hole with the milled road material. It also will help to track the amount of material laid on the new road and the position of the equipment. For refueling, Coffman has a fuel truck that is bolstered by the trucks used by the mechanics. “On this job we’ll also use a wet tap for some of the trucks and stuff where the supplier of the fuel is actually going to fuel the equipment,” said Coffman. According to him, extensive planning is what will make this project a success. “We work on a lot of remote projects and have done jobs that are virtually in the middle of nowhere where you don’t even have places for people to stay,” said Coffman. “So major lessons learned are that you have to pre-plan, make sure that you stage your materials appropriately, and that you track the materials you are going to utilize, as well as what you have utilized. You need to have all your spare parts and other elements to keep things operational readily available at the job site.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) and I-15 is approximately 20,000 average daily trips. Planned growth will increase the traffic volume to approximately 46,000 average daily trips by the year 2030.” The East Segment is expected to cost $201 million, with funding from the federal government, TransNet, a developer, the county of San Diego Transportation Impact Fee and Tribal contributions. Karen Jewel, Caltrans SR 76 east segment project manager, has been with project since 2014. “This project will realign curves to improve line of sight and stopping distances, construct a median barrier to separate the two directions of traffic, and provide 10 foot shoulders for both directions,” she said. “It also includes improving the SR 76/I-15 interchange and expanding the Park & Ride facility located next to it.” Utility work is an integral part of this project, with three major water supply pipes crossing the SR 76 alignment. “To ensure the project had no impact on these pipes, the San Diego County Water Authority relined them through the roadway corridor, and the project will be constructing a bridge over them,” said Jewel. “Other sewer and water lines have to be relocated or new ones placed before the roadway work can begin in some areas. This utility work, along with maintaining driveway access, requires close communications and coordination with residents and businesses in the area. “Another level of communication that is important is the dialogue between Ames, the Caltrans inspectors and the resident engineer,” she added. “Communications occur daily. Ongoing communication is necessary in order to keep the project moving smoothly and provide the opportunity to deal with unexpected issues as they arise. This project is a great example of how a roadway project can enhance the environment and work closely with the residents to construct a safer roadway for the travelling public and preserve the wildlife in the corridor.” Ames Construction has worked on many Caltrans projects.
“It’s predominantly road work,” said Curt Scanlan, Ames’ project manager, “which has about 1.2 million yards of roadway excavation, along with some rock excavation; 5.2 miles of storm drain work, which is typically box culverts; and two bridges. The new bridges are small–one over an existing creek–a 150 foot span, and the other is a precast girder bridge, a 145 foot span over the San Diego County Water Authority water lines that feed San Diego County–a 96- inch waterline, a 90inch line, and a 72-inch waterline.” The creek is seasonal and the bridge is being built during dry season. “We will finish the deep foundation work for the bridges by October 1, 2015,” said Scanlan, who noted that some infrastructure work has to be done prior to starting the roadwork. “It’s an extensive project with all the storm Ames Construction Inc. photo

drains, box culverts and the bridges. We also have a couple of miles of moderately deep 18-inch sewer lines and 24-inch water lines. There is also the placing of 150,000 tons of asphalt–the final roadway will be asphalt concrete–black paving. “There also is an extensive planting project. One of the features is a 70-acre mitigation site where our roadway excavation comes from,” he added. “Caltrans and these agencies use land and acquire right-of-way. This area will be heavily planted and restored for
wildlife and different indigenous species to the area. This element of the work will cost between $9 and $10 million.” Local traffic will not be a major problem for Ames crews as nearly 65 percent of the roadwork is for new alignment. “Because the current road is so twisty and has lots of curves, new sections of straight road are being built,” said Scanlan. “We’re building a new fill adjacent to and out into the existing Sandby River where a lot of our embankment is being placed. It’s a very big drainage basin, which flows into
the Pacific Ocean. “Essentially we build a piece of embankment, put traffic on it and then we do the inside widening,” he added. “Then it’s over to the existing roadwork where we remove and replace it and tie it into the new alignment. This allows traffic to flow and lets us do our work safely.” The removal of 650,000 cu. yds. (496,961 cu m) of clean sand from the 70-acre (28.33 ha) mitigation site and setting up the embankments has not been easy. “The sand is hard to move and we’re using on-road double-belly trucks to move the dirt,” said Scanlan. “We have a 185,000pound John Deere 9 cubic yard excavator and the material is being placed in the double-belly trucks. We also have been able to prewater the sand and employ other measures to keep the sand placed efficiently in the fill. “So far we have excavated about 250,000 yards of earthwork and we’re installing the first two miles of embankments and roadwork, along with the drainage,” he added. “We’ll be putting in the first traffic switch in the next couple of
months, as well as paving the first phase of the roadwork.” The boxes for the new drainage system are being cast-in-place. “Some of them are quite large, including triple-barrel boxes that are eight to nine feet deep and 40 feet wide,” said Scanlan. “We built them in place with our carpenters.” The CIDH drillholes for the bridges were completed in August for the bridge over the creek. “We’re starting the substructure work and a similar foundation for the second bridge,” said Scanlan. “We expect to complete both of them in the next nine months. The wet hole substructure CIDH is challenging work and Hayward Baker is providing that work with good results. Ames has completed similar bridges of this type throughout the country.” So far the year-round project is based on single shifts, with 45 Ames employees and 20 subcontractors on site daily. The major subcontractors consist of Hayward Baker for CIDH; Integrity Rebar, for reinforcing steel, rock structures and rock slope protection; Perry Electric for electrical; RJ see UPGRADE page 18

Noble for asphalt paving; and Marina landscape for landscape and irrigation. “We have a really good relationship with Caltrans and we have a good project team on site,” said Scanlan, “We definitely have a ‘project first’ mentality here and this translates into a high production atmosphere and clear communications with Caltrans, so that we can identify and solve problems in real time. And the work is progressing well. It’s an environmentally sensitive area and Caltrans had to go through a lot of hurdles in the last 10 years to clear the last piece of right-of-way for this construction project. “We have an experienced environmental team and a good team overall and with Caltrans,” he added, “we were able to get through what could have been some tough environmental issues on the project start up.” When California voters approved the TransNet Extension Ordinance in November 2004, they gave their consent for the Environmental Mitigation Program that is providing $850 million to protect, preserve and restore habitats near the region’s most significant transportation infrastructure, including the SR 76. “Over $80 million in EMP funds have been invested along the SR 76 corridor to purchase 1,600 acres of property,” stated a project press release. “This property supports habitat conservation and the San Luis Rey River Park Master Plan in this corridor. Restoration efforts include preserving land as natural habitat, protecting endangered wildlife or native plant species (such as the Least Bell’s Vireo or coastal sage scrub), recontouring the San Luis Rey River to improve water flow and replanting native plants Permanent animal crossings underneath the highway are being constructed to facilitate safe wildlife movement through the river corridor, as well as directional fencing. “The San Luis Rey River is adjacent to SR-76 and Caltrans looked to enhance design features to better fit in with the environment,” said Jewel. “For example,
several culverts under the roadway were increased in size to facilitate wildlife movement through the corridor. Caltrans has seen success with animals using these crossings installed in previous projects along SR 76. Animal escape ramps will be constructed in areas where driveways intersect with wildlife fencing, a first for Caltrans in San Diego.” She also describes the biofiltration strips that will be constructed to improve the water quality. “Roadway runoff will be filtered prior to entering the river environment,” she said. “Large areas of the river valley are being restored and revegetated to create and enhance native upland and wetland habitats as part of the project’s permit requirements. All of these efforts have been in coordination with the

county of San Diego to support the San Luis Rey River Park plans.” Asked how the run-off from SR 76 affects the San Luis Rey River, Jewel replied, “In order to mitigate erosion and storm water pollution, bioswales along the roadway will filter out silt and pollution and remove it from surface runoff. We are utilizing them to the maximum extent possible, and existing offsite drainage systems are being upgraded, cleaned or replaced as needed.” Ames’ closest construction yard is 55 mi. (88.5) away in Corona, Calif., and due to distance and being in a rural area, Scanlan has Kevin Huddleston, the on-site mechanic and oiler, who is also responsible for fueling the vehicles. “We are a self-sufficient operation,” Scanlan said. “Concerning construction materials and so forth, we have various vendors in the North San Diego County area to supply us with construction products, road-base and similar items,. In terms of equipment, we coordinate with our equipment department. We’ve had equipment come in from different parts of the country. “We bring in mechanical help as needed and it’s a team effort,” he added. “It’s very busy and we have an excellent mechanic in Kevin, who’s handling fuel, lube and
repair work. The everyday repair issues are typically minor–a blown hose, tire punctures, etc., but for the most part, the equipment has been pretty stable.” Among the equipment being employed are Cat 623 scrapers and Cat 14H blades (one equipped with GPS). Each piece of equipment has a logbook, where information is logged from daily walks and checks, and the mechanic depends upon operators informing him on the state of their vehicles. “It’s a really important dynamic and we have a great team of operators who communicate with us daily and take great care of their equipment,” said Scanlan, “I’ve done similar projects, but every project is different. The constant is having a solid team that is prepared for anything. Ames has really built their company over the past 50 years via a ‘real team’ approach and one of the strengths of the company is the assistance provided to the staff. We do this via training, a stress on safety, and communication.” For more information visit keepsandiegomoving.com/SR-76Corridor (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Architects Question Gehry’s Los Angeles River Master Plan GEHRY from page 13
Any project of importance requires a transparent process, regardless of who leads the effort. A transparent process ensures the decisions made, and funding sources dedicated, are clearly communicated and understood. To succeed, the design process must be overseen by all stakeholders and experienced practitioners. The process should include community outreach and well-publicized opportunities for involvement by all, especially local landscape architects who are familiar and experienced in local climatic, ecological, and community conditions. Any efforts made in the revitalization of the river should result in public recreational opportunities, improved ecology and hydrology, and opportunities for local design professionals. The nation’s second largest city faces two significant challenges: First, our communities lack significant public open space; and, second, drought conditions and climate change make water management critical to serving our current and future populations. The Los Angeles River can be transformed into green infrastructure that provides solutions to both these challenges. The Los Angeles River is a dynamic natural system that reacts differently to each

ecological and climatic condition and community with which it interacts. Landscape architects are uniquely educated in how to best traverse the nexuses between ecology, community, and design. A green infrastructure project as important as the Los Angeles River revitalization requires an engaged process with design professionals with dif-
ferent experiences and expertise, with knowledge of the unique environmental, social, and political conditions of the Los Angeles River watershed. Architects such as Frank Gehry can certainly be valuable in this process, but even he admitted he isn’t “a landscape guy” when Mayor Eric Garcetti compared him to famed
landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The Los Angeles River deserves the attention of landscape architects who have experience analyzing and then creating visions for regionally-scaled landscape systems. This kind of experience is needed to build on the work of the 11-mi. Alternative 20 plan to address the river’s full 51-mi. stretch. Local landscape architects look forward to seeing the preliminary studies from the Gehry-led team. We ask for a transparent process with plenty of outreach to stakeholders and the community to ensure the foundation of previously-approved work, which reflect the public’s needs, is firmly in place. And we ask for help from our colleagues nationwide to respectfully demonstrate to Mayor Garcetti the important benefits landscape architecture provide to our lives every day. Hyundai Shows Off New Machines at Georgia Facility
(L-R): Charlie LaColla, Chad Placido and Diana Jackson of Motor City Rentals and Sales, Peoria, Ariz., share a laugh while looking at the new Hyundai mini-excavators. A crowd settles in for a demonstration of the newest Hyundai machines at a site in Cumming, Ga.
O
n Sept. 17, U.S. and Canadian Hyundai dealers, as well as the press corps, came together at the headquarters of Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc. in Norcross, Ga., for a facility tour and briefing on the newest machines being unveiled for the North American market. Afterwards, the crowd boarded buses for Silver City Farm in Cumming, Ga., for a live demo and walk around of the machines and some hands-on operation time. A picture perfect day provided dealers and press representatives an opportunity to get familiarized with the new Tier IV final Hyundai HX series hydraulic excavators ranging from 24 to 57-tons (22 to 52 t). The next new machines introduced were the Tier IV final HL900 series of wheel loaders, which tout a 10 percent lower fuel consumption than the previous 9A series loaders. The series 9 single and tandem rollers were unveiled, which includes four single drum models and two compact tandem-drum models. Hyundai hydraulic breakers also were showcased in a static display. After the demo, guests made the short walk to the Silver City Saloon to enjoy beverages, a pig roast barbeque and some down home southern rock. The entire Silver City Farm facility made for a truly unique experience to see and operate the newest Hyundai machines, and opportunity to mingle and dine with the Hyundai staff and dealer network representatives. Komatsu’s Off-Highway Truck Features Clean Engine Komatsu America Corp.’s HD785-7 offhighway truck features a powerful, clean Komatsu SAA12V140E-3 turbocharged, after cooled engine that provides a maximum net output of 1,178 hp. High Performance for Enhanced Productivity The truck’s engines deliver faster acceleration and higher travel speeds with high horsepower per ton. High torque at low speed, impressive acceleration and low fuel consumption ensure maximum productivity. The mode selection with variable horsepower control (VHPC) system selects the appropriate mode (either power or economy) based on the working condition. The VHPC system detects the truck’s load and selects the optimum horsepower setting mode, providing high production and low fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer. The fully automatic transmission selects an optimum gear according to the travel and engine speed. To reduce fuel consumption, the shifting point is automatically selected depending on the machine’s acceleration. The automatic retard speed control system (ARSC) with a large capacity retarder allows operators to set downhill travel speed at a
constant level so the operator can concentrate on steering. Its cooling oil temperature is consistently monitored so the speed is automatically reduced if the retarder oil temperature rises. The Komatsu designed electronically controlled all clutch modulation system with K-ATOMiCS optimizes the clutch engagement oil pressure at every gear for smoother shifting with minimal torque shock. The HD785-7 features an extra-long wheelbase, a wide tread and a low center of gravity to haul its load at higher speed for greater productivity and deliver driving comfort over rough terrain. Enhanced Cab Design for Optimal Operator Comfort and Safety The HD785-7 is equipped with an ergonomically designed cab that provides a quiet and comfortable operator environment. The spacious cabs are mounted with Komatsu’s viscous mounts to keep noise at a minimum and provide a low-vibration operating environment. A low effort body dump control level makes dumping loads significantly easier. The pedal-operated secondary brakes activate the front disk brakes and parking brakes. When hydraulic pressure

drops below the rated level, the parking brake is automatically activated. The fiveway adjustable operator seat and the tilt-telescopic steering column provide and optimum driving posture for increased driving comfort and better control over the machine’s operation. Durability and Reliability Provide Easy Maintenance Flat face-to-face O-ring seals are used to securely seal all hydraulic hose connections
and to prevent oil leakage. The main harnesses and controller connectors are equipped with sealed DT connectors that provide high reliability and dust and water resistance. The fully hydraulic controlled wet multiple-disc brakes ensure reliable and stable brake performance. Wet disc brakes are fully sealed to keep contaminants out, reducing wear and maintenance. Both the filters and greasing points are centralized for easier servicing. To minimize operating costs, oil change intervals are extended to 500 hours for engine oil and 4,000 hours for hydraulic oil. The HD785-7 is equipped with Komatsu’s vehicle health monitoring system (VHMS) to allow easy access to summary performance data. Using a satellite communications system and optional wireless download, the Komatsu VHMS allows technicians to use a simple internet interface to easily check the pressures and trends, summarize yesterday’s payload, and be quickly alerted of critical faults. E-Series Articulated Dump Trucks Feature New Updates Bolstered with big updates, the new 370E, 410E and 460E articulated dump truck (ADTs) are designed to keep materials moving and profits flowing. The three models are highlighted by an EPA Final Tier IV (FT4)/EU Stage IV John Deere PowerTech diesel engine and a pressurized Deeredesigned cab — both of which combine to boost productivity and uptime, while minimizing daily operating costs. “The new E-Series articulated dump trucks are the result of our most important asset, our customers,” said Mark Shea, ADT product consultant, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “We worked with our customers to find out what they need in an articulated dump truck to make their jobs more safe, efficient and productive. The E-Series is equipped with several features to accommodate these requests. Efficiency and productivity are boosted by standard best-in-class diff lock and powerful transmission retarder; while safety is paramount through groundlevel daily service, auto horn, rollover protection and remote park-brake release.” Designed and built in Dubuque and Davenport, Iowa, the E-Series ADTs feature 422 hp (370E), 443 hp (410E) and 481 hp (460E), delivering impressive power and
torque with exceptional power-to-weight ratios and fast cycles. A purpose-built ZF transmission includes eight forward gears and four reverse gears, and a high-capacity retarder to increase service brake life. In addition, the John Deere hauler axles are designed for heavy-duty applications and include on-the-fly differential locks and outboard planetaries, and each axle is independently pressure lubed and filtered. The ESeries axles use internal wet disc brakes that utilize independent cooling circuits. Perhaps the biggest change to these new models is the updated cab. The ultra quiet, redesigned cab is sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and noise, affording enhanced operator concentration and efficiency. Creature comforts include push-button start, low-effort push-button controls, air-suspension heated high-back seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and optional premium radio with Bluetooth, auxiliary input and satellite radio capability. Stairway lights can be turned on with the push of a button from ground level for easier visibility when entering the larger cab entryway. The E-Series models are equipped with an updated 7-in. high-resolution LCD monitor for easy access to onboard diagnostics, digi-
tal gauges and vital system indicators — all conveniently located within arm’s reach and view during rough haul conditions. Two ergonomically positioned sealed switch modules simplify operation and convenience controls. The auto shutdown feature turns off the engine after an owner-determined period of inactivity to reduce emissions, idle time and subsequent wear on the power train. An integrated tire-pressure/temperature monitoring system comes standard to help maximize tire life and fuel efficiency. If pressure drops by 10 percent, a passive alarm appears on the monitor. In addition, further pressure decreases or overheating result in an audible warning and an email alert that is sent via JDLink. An optional, onboard weighing system is factory calibrated, which allows contractors to view the weight and the number of loads carried via JDLink. The system displays the payload on the monitor during loading while transmitting real-time load and tonnage data via JDLink, so productivity can be monitored from virtually anywhere. The onboard weighing option also comes equipped with mirror-mounted LED load indicator lights that illuminate for the loading operator as the
truck approaches capacity (green flashing), is at capacity (green) or is 10 percent or more over capacity/overload (red flashing). A favored customer-driven feature of the E-Series and a hallmark for John Deere is centralized, true ground-level servicing to simplify daily maintenance and overall serviceability. All daily service can be completed from the ground. Hydraulically controlled fans with swing-out cooling packages on both sides of the engine highlight the coolon-demand system. For dusty environments, there is a reversible fan option available for simplified cooler cleanout. Operators looking to get the most out of their E-Series can rely on Ultimate Uptime featuring John Deere WorkSight. With Ultimate Uptime, operators receive predelivery and follow-up inspections; three years of JDLink telematics, machine health prognostics and remote diagnostics and programming capability; and the ability to add additional dealer-provided uptime solutions to customize the package to individual needs. New Caterpillar C Series Articulated Trucks Increase Profit Potential The Cat 735C, 740C EJ and 745C articulated trucks build on the performance, reliability and durability of their B Series predecessors with significant new features. These include engines that meet U.S. EPA Tier IV Final/EU Stage IV emission standards, new transmissions with expanded electronic control, automatic traction control, automatic retarder control, hill assist and waiting brake systems, and an optional payload weighing system — all aimed at delivering lower costs per ton by reducing cycle times, saving fuel and easing the operator’s work load. Rated payload capacities for the new models are 36, 42, and 45.2 tons (32.7, 38, and 41 t), respectively, with all models replacing their B Series predecessors. The new 745C’s 1.7-ton (1.5 t) capacity increase (compared with the 740B’s capacity) combines with its faster cycle times for significant production gains. The new 740C EJ ejector model, which combines the 745C’s tractor with a horizontal-discharge body, provides added versatility and safety in certain operations. The 740C EJ can unload material to uniform depths while traveling at speed, potentially reducing the need for onsite spreading equipment, and can discharge the load with added stability in soft underfoot conditions, on side slopes and grades, and in environments where overhead obstructions are present. New Power-Train Efficiency Engines in the new models meet Tier IV Final/Stage IV emission standards, but also are available in versions meeting applicable emission standards for lesser- and non-regulated areas. The 735C’s Cat C15 ACERT engine is rated at 452 hp (337 kW) and the C18 ACERT engine in the 740C EJ and 745C is rated at 511 hp (381 kW). Articulated trucks designed for sale in higher regulated territories are equipped with the Cat clean emissions module (CEM). This aftertreatment system includes a diesel particulate filter that can automatically regenerate (remove accumulated soot) without operator intervention or work cycle disruption. The fully integrated Cat CEM also includes a selective catalytic reduction system and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, with the DEF tank being easily accessed from ground level. The new Cat CX38 high density
Rated payload capacities for the new models are 36, 42, and 45.2 tons (32.7, 38, and 41 t), respectively, with all models replacing their B Series predecessors.
power shift transmission used in the C Series trucks has nine forward speeds, two reverse speeds, and a number of electronic features that enhance overall performance and productivity. Electronic clutch pressure control, for example, modulates transmissionclutch engagement for smooth shifting and extended component life, and the advanced productivity electronic control strategy feature is aimed at optimizing gear selection in all operating situations for efficient performance and fuel economy. Shift torque management, combined with the improved shift control logic feature, maintains consistent torque flow though the transmission during gear-range changes, provides automatic shift selection tailored to machine operation, and automatically downshifts for acceleration. Part throttle shifting allows shifting at lower engine speeds, resulting in improved fuel efficiency, quieter operation and easier low-speed maneuvering. As the new C Series trucks, with permanent six-wheel drive, encounter changing terrain and underfoot conditions, the automatic traction control feature adjusts the level of engagement for the clutch locks in the inter-axle differential and in the three axle differentials. The system makes these adjustments while the machine is moving and does not require operator intervention. The system maintains optimum traction for steady production, relieves the operator of manually engaging the system, saves fuel by proportionally applying the locks based on operating conditions, and does not hinder tight-maneuver steering. Retarding control for the C Series
models can now be set to fully automatic, in addition to manual control. In automatic mode, the machine manages retarding through a combination of engine brake, gear selection, and service-brake application without operator intervention. The automatic system is available for both forward and reverse operations, and the manual system provides two levels of engagement for more experienced operators. Other features that contribute to the overall efficiency and ease of operation include the hill assist system, which facilitates stopping and starting on grades, and the waiting brake system, which temporarily applies the service brakes during pauses in the work cycle, whether waiting at the loading or dumping site or delays from site congestion. Cat Connect Technologies Cat Connect payload technologies for the 735C, 740C EJ, and 745C help customers optimize operations and improve overall jobsite efficiency. With Cat production measurement as an option, operators can measure and deliver accurate payloads with confidence to boost productivity, lower costs and prevent the potential for overload damage. When used with Cat Connect link technologies, payload data can be accessed through the online VisionLink user interface. With accurate, reliable, performance and productivity data, customers can make timely, fact-based decisions about their fleet and effectively manage their job sites. State Studies Phoenix-Tucson Rail Link Paul Davenport ASSOCIATED PRESS
PHOENIX (AP) State transportation planners who studied multiple options for proposed passenger train service between Phoenix and Tucson are recommending one that would follow largely existing freight railroad tracks and serve both Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix and downtown Tucson. A draft environmental impact statement released by the Arizona Department of Transportation recommends routing passenger trains generally along existing Union Pacific Corp. tracks north of Eloy in southern Pinal County and along UP tracks and Interstate 10 between Eloy and Tucson. It also envisions possible future extensions from downtown Tucson to Tucson International Airport and from central Phoenix to locations west and northwest of downtown. Other options studied by the transportation department at various times during a planning process that has already lasted four years included routing the proposed passenger service through the city of Maricopa or the Gila River Indian Community, both south of Phoenix or along the Superstition Freeway in the Tempe-Mesa area. The recommended option had cost and performance advantages, the document said. Passenger rail service would help provide reliable travel times “in an increasingly congested region that currently affords few transportation alternatives to the automobile,’’ according to the transportation department document. The department said the recommended option calls for a
blend of express service with few stops between Phoenix and Tucson and local service with stops in several additional communities along the way. Apart from continuation of the formal planning process, the long-term future of the project is uncertain. The department noted that there currently is no construction timetable and that no funding has been identified for the recommended option’s projected $4.5 billion cost. “It will be up to the public and policymakers to decide if the project is feasible and how to generate the funding to pay for the project,’’ the transportation department said in a statement announcing the release of the draft statement. The department said it will hold public hearings on the document in Phoenix, Tucson and Coolidge and accept written comments. Passenger rail service in Arizona is currently limited in the state’s largest metro areas. Plans call for extensions to a light rail system that extends from northwest Phoenix through downtown to Tempe and Mesa, while Tucson has a trolley system that links downtown with the University of Arizona campus. Amtrak, the federal government’s passenger rail system, currently only provides limited service in southern and central Arizona, with an interstate route that includes stops in Tucson, Maricopa and Yuma and Maricopa but not Phoenix. A different Amtrak route serves Flagstaff, Kingman and Winslow in northern Arizona. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
Seattle Dig Unearths Prehistoric Tools SEATTLE (AP) An archaeological survey to clear the way for construction near a mall has unearthed thousands of stone tools crafted at least 10,000 years ago. “We were pretty amazed,’’ archaeologist Robert Kopperl, who led the field investigation, told The Seattle Times. “This is the oldest archaeological site in the Puget Sound lowland with stone tools.’’ The rare find is shedding light on a time when prehistoric bison and mammoths still roamed what is now western Washington. Only a handful of archaeological sites dating back 10,000 years or more have been discovered in the region. Chemical analysis of one of the tools revealed traces of the food they were eating, including bison, deer, bear, sheep and salmon. The dig also uncovered a fragment of salmon bone, evidence that the fish made its way up local streams for at least 10,000 years. It also revealed other unusual tools, including the bottoms of two spear points that have concave bases. The site near Redmond Town Center mall in Redmond, Wash., was initially surveyed in 2009, as the city embarked on a project to restore
salmon habitat in Bear Creek, a tributary of the Sammamish River. The creek had been confined to a rocklined channel decades before. The Washington State Department of Transportation largely paid for the salmon-restoration project as a way to mitigate some of the environmental impacts of building the new Highway 520 floating bridge over Lake Washington and widening the roadway. The site appears to have been occupied by small groups of people who were making and repairing stone tools, said Kopperl, of SWCA Environmental Consultants. He and his colleagues published their initial analysis earlier this year in the journal PaleoAmerica. “This was a very good place to have a camp,’’ Kopperl said. “They could use it as a centralized location to go out and fish and hunt and gather and make stone tools.’’ Crews initially found unremarkable artifacts. But when they dug deeper, they found a foot-thick layer of peat — remains of a bog at least 10,000 years old. Below the peat, they later discovered a wealth of tools and fragments. “We knew right away that it was a pretty significant find,’’ Washington
State Historic Preservation Officer Allyson Brooks told The Times. Kopperl said that because of where the artifacts were located below the peat, which had not been disturbed, it’s clear they predate the formation of the peat. Radiocarbon analysis conducted on charcoal fragments found with the tools confirmed the age. “It’s hard to find this kind of site west of the Cascades, because it’s so heavily vegetated and the Puget Lobe of the big ice sheet really affected the landscape,’’ Kopperl told the newspaper. A handful of sites have been discovered east of the mountains with tools dating back between 12,000 and 14,000 years. So it’s clear that humans have lived in the area since soon after the glaciers retreated, but a lot of mystery still surrounds the region’s earliest occupants and their origins, The Times reported. When Kopperl and his team are done analyzing the artifacts, they will hand them over to the Muckleshoot Tribe for curation. There are no immediate plans to display the artifacts publicly. Official Proposes More Research Before Approving Texas Water Grid TEXAS from page 1
challenges amid huge population growth. Larson has described a proposed water grid as “major arterials to convey water throughout the state” and said it needed to be looked at “from a 50,000-foot view.” Kramer likens such a huge infrastructure project to one narrowly defeated by Texas voters nearly a half century ago. In 1968, a $3 billion bond proposal to import Mississippi River water and distribute it throughout Texas failed by 6,600 votes. The former president and CEO of the El Paso Water Utility, Ed Archuleta, said such a statewide water grid project is impractical because of costs. Archuleta, now director of water resources at the University of Texas at El Paso, also said environmental regulations now on the books further complicate a statewide project. State and federal water planners should do more to make conservation technologies — like reusing water that
“If we’re going to do a study, we need a comprehensive study of how efficient we can become.”

comes out of wastewater treatment plants — more attractive, he said. El Paso took advantage of a 15 percent federal innovation incentive when it built a water reclamation plant in 1985. “That program went away in the 1980s,” he said. El Paso has experience in trying to move water over distances. The water utility owns tens of thousands of acres near the HudspethCulberson county line with plans to import groundwater 90 mi. (144.84 km) when population growth makes it
necessary, now likely no sooner than 2050. Just 90 mi., however, is far more expensive than conservation, recycling and desalination. El Paso has worked to achieve the lowest per-capita water usage in Texas and has the world’s largest inland desalination plant. “Importation is our last insurance policy,” Archuleta said. Heavy Equipment Helps Contain Fires FIRES from page 1
Shaw, spokesman of the Oregon Department of Forestry. “It will have either a circular sawblade or a chainsaw bar. It will grab ahold of the tree and set it off. Sometimes the equipment will be a feller-buncher. Typically, there are a couple different versions, but generally they pinch off the tree at the stump and grab it with tongs and carry it to the next tree and grab another tree. Sometimes it will have a sawblade at the bottom. They pile the trees in a spot for a log hauler to come and move out of the way. These are used for building fire lines.” The same equipment is used to remove hazardous trees. The other piece of equipment frequently used is a masticator. “It will be on a skid steer, and it has a head that just chews up the vegetation,” said Wrolson. “I call it cookie monster, it devours everything along its way.” Crews also use heavy equipment for water handling. “We have a multitude of different sizes and strengths of water handling engines,” Wrolson said. “For wildland interface, there are tanks and pumps that have been built internally.” One of those is called a skidgine. “That’s a skidder with an engine attached to it,” Shaw said. “You have a pump and water tank on the skidder. It can go where trucks can’t get to. It’s not your typical type of equipment. Contractors and loggers have them and they are custom built. You can do a hose line right off of them.” In addition to the heavy equipment used to contain the
fires, utilities bring in equipment to restore power in places where fires have taken out the lines. Also, the Department of Transportation moves equipment in to rebuild bridges and roads. To make it all work requires good, long-term relationships with local contractors who commit to helping before the fire season begins. “Between the federal and state governments, we have a multitude of agreements with contractors for crews and equipment,” said Wrolson. “We call upon those contract folks to mobilize. We do have some equipment that is local throughout the stateside that is state owned that we utilize, but we just don’t have the budget to have the armada of dozers and skidders we need. We rely on the contractors and the relationships we have built over the years.” The Canyon Creek Complex fire is under control, though Wrolson expects it will continue smoking until the first snow flies. But even at 85-percent contained, equipment and manpower on site in early September included: Two Type 1 crews, 12 Type 2 crews, four helicopters, 18 engines, six dozers, nine water tenders and three skidgines,” Shaw said. Next, crews will begin working to repair damage caused to contain the fire. “If humans did it to stop the fires, we’ll fix it,” said Wrolson. “If the fire did it, we don’t because it is natural.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Volvo SD75B, SD115B Compactors Roll With the Punches The SD75B and SD115B soil compactors are the latest Tier IVFinal soil compactors from Volvo Construction Equipment. These versatile and intelligent machines help operators achieve the highest level of performance and efficiency possible, whatever the demands of the job, according to the manufacturer. The advanced drum control system, for example, easily allows the operator to adjust the frequency and amplitude, compensating for changing soil types and conditions. Two frequency settings come as standard, but five can be included as an option. High or low amplitude can be selected to adjust the drum’s dynamic force based on the job and material depth. Meanwhile, the optimized centrifugal force and auto-vibration feature enhance performance, ease of operation and productivity. The traction system provides enhanced climbing and stability in difficult applications, such as steep inclines or slippery surfaces, preventing wheel or drum spin for gradeability. The SD75B and SD115B can be set up in three different configurations and are available with a smooth or padfoot drum. The compactor also can be quickly and easily converted from a smooth drum by clamping on a padfoot shell — further improving versatility. “These new models offer the perfect mid-range size and exceptional versatility to accomplish any compaction job,” said Mark Eckert, compaction product manager at Volvo Construction Equipment. “Whether for major highway projects or for general site preparation, the SD75B and SD115B adapt to changes in conditions, ensuring the contractor can use it for any job that arises — no matter the application or the terrain.”

Exceptionally Efficient The Tier IV Final Volvo engine delivers high torque at low rpm for reduced emissions and fuel consumption without compromising on power. ECO mode now comes as standard on the SD75B and SD115B models and can achieve up to a 40 percent reduction in fuel consumption by matching engine speed to operation mode.
Additionally, the intelligent design provides quicker ramp-up speeds at lower pressure, further increasing fuel efficiency. The passive regeneration automatically cleans the filters during normal operation without any input from the operator or negative impact on performance. The hydraulically driven fan with variable speed draws power only when
needed, which reduces noise, improves operator comfort and results in a lower total cost of ownership. Comfort and Control The B-Series compactors also help to promote high operator efficiency and productivity, due to a cab with excellent visibility, grouped ergonomic controls and a comfortable environment. The
ROPS/FOPS certified cab has floor-to-ceiling glass for a commanding view of the job site, with clear sightlines down to the forward drum. The fully adjustable seat rotates and slides to further enhance visibility and comfort. The new high-tech color operator display shows operational information and key diagnostics, and is easily visible at all times — even in bright sunlight, according to the manufacturer. Robust and Reliable The SD75B and SD115B are backed by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty, which covers the frames and articulation joints of the compactors. The B-Series models feature the high quality components, clever routing and a clean design. The heavy-duty drum, center joint and front frame components are engineered and manufactured for longevity and performance. The frames are welded and built from high-quality steel guaranteeing a strong structure. All components and electronics have been moved into the cab and mounted on the rear wall to protect them from harsh environmental factors. A tilting cab is standard on the B-Series models to provide easy service access to all hydraulic components. The engine hood lifts electrically for extensive ground level access to the engine compartment. Maintenance and inspections can be conducted more efficiently with minimal downtime, increasing overall productivity and reliability. For more information, call 717/532-9181 or visit www.volvo.com. Part of Bomag’s new “Dash 5” Series of single drum rollers, the smooth drum BW177DH-5 and padfoot drum BW177PDH-5 feature a dual travel pump drive system for increased gradeability. With one travel pump dedicated to drum drive and one for the rear axle, these Bomag single drum rollers climb up to 24 percent higher grades than rollers employing a single travel pump and parallel flow hydraulic system. Built with no-spin rear differential, both the BW177DH-5 and BW177PDH-5 deliver up to 58 percent gradeability with vibration and 61 percent without. The rollers’ elevated front frame design increases the space between the drum and frame to prevent material plugging when compacting heavy cohesive soils. Both compactors offer two vibration frequencies of 1,860/2,280 VPM (31/38 Hz) and dual amplitude to tailor compaction output to jobsite conditions. The BW177DH-5 and BW177PDH-5 deliver 25,179 lb. (112 kN) centrifugal force in high amplitude and 16,636 lb. (74 kN) in low to quickly compact up to 18-in. (45.7 cm) lifts of granular soil and up to 14-in. (35.5 cm) mixed-soil lifts. Excelling at compacting silts and clays, the padfoot BW177PDH-5 can quickly compact up to 8-in. (20.3 cm) thick lifts of these cohesive materials. Offering the latest in emissions-reducing technology, the Tier IV Final Kubota turbocharged diesel engine offer 74 hp (55.4 kW) output. Featuring the Bomag ecomode operation, the rollers use intelligent engine control to run the engine in the optimum range, resulting in up to 30 percent lower fuel consumption. The advanced BW177DH-5 and BW177PDH-5 vibratory rollers can be equipped with options that improve compaction performance, machine utilization
and return on investment. Both rollers offer the optional Bomag Terrameter system, providing economical compaction and continuous compaction assessment during and after the project. The optional Bomag Telematic, available for all Tier IV final machines, boasts advanced diagnostics to track roller location, operating hours, idle time, fuel consumption, engine service codes and maintenance reminders. The new Bomag BW177DH-5 and BW177PDH-5 single drum vibratory rollers offer an operating speed ranging from 0 to 6.2 mph (0 to 10 kmh). Combined with high vibration output, the rollers compact up to 550 cu. yds./hr (420 cu m/hr) of granular soil, mixed soils at rates reaching 420 cu. yds./hr (321 cu m/hr) and up to 185 cu. yds./hr (141 cu m/hr) of cohesive soil. These versatile and productive rollers can be used on a wide range of applications from residential and commercial construction to parking lots to utility and municipal projects to highway construction and maintenance. An updated operator’s compartment offers easy entry from either side of the machine and a more spacious operating platform with intuitive control layout for more comfortable roller operation. The optional climate controlled, fully enclosed cabin elevates operator comfort and productivity regardless of ambient weather conditions. Roller design delivers improved sightlines to the front and rear of the machine for increased operating safety. A wide opening engine hood and easy-to-reach service points from ground level simplifies machine maintenance to increase uptime. For more information, call 803/337-0700 or visit www.bomag.com/us. See outdoor power equipment, along with products for landscapes, gardens, outdoor leisure, hardscapes and light construction. Future Show Dates: October 19-21, 2016 – October 18-20, 2017 – October 17-19, 2018 For more information, contact by Phone: (800) 558-8767 or (812) 9499200 and Fax: (812) 949-9600, Email: info@gie-expo.com PIOGA (Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association) Eastern Oil & Gas Conference & Trade Show DATES: OCTOBER 27 – 28, 2015 PLACE: Monroeville Convention Center in Monroeville, PA The time of year is new, but the venue will be familiar to most of our exhibitors. The Monroeville Convention Center has lots to offer: a convenient location, free parking, a good layout and reasonable lodging costs. We’re even rolling back our booth prices to 2013 levels! We hope you will take the opportunity to again participate in the region’s longest-running trade show organized by the exploration and production industry for the E&P industry. For more information, contact The Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association, 115 VIP Drive, Suite 210, Northridge Office Plaza II, Wexford, PA 15090-7906. PHONE (724) 933-7306; FAX (724) 933-7310. OSHA for Oil and Gas: Regulations, Auditing and Enforcement DATE: OCTOBER 29, 2015 PLACE: Houston, Texas In OSHA for Oil and Gas, we review safety auditing best practices, employee and contractor safety as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s (OSHA’s) regulations and enforcement initiatives. There is a series of rulemaking proceedings currently underway (e.g., silica, electronic recordkeeping, and reporting) as well as soon-expected rulemaking (e.g., fall protection, clarification of recordkeeping retention requirements, and combustible dust) and RFIs that potentially affect the industry (e.g., process safety management). There are also a number of OSHA initiatives outside of the rulemaking context, such as National Emphasis Programs and Awareness Campaigns. Given the high risk of oil and gas work, the diversity of projects, the remote nature of the operations, and the fact that many employees and supervisors are new to this industry, there is a critical need to expand safety auditing to ensure best practices across all sectors of the supply chain, from upstream drillers, well servicing teams, and track crews at the well site to pipeline construction crews and operators and refinery workers. The goal of this course is to provide guidance to oil and gas industry, with an emphasis on health and safety regulations, compliance, and enforcement trends. This Course is Useful For: . Project managers . HSE professionals . Regulatory professionals . Individuals new to oil and gas regulatory investigations & OSHA . Energy lawyers . Oil & gas engineers . In-house counsel . Risk managers For more information on this course, contact Kinetic at (720) 491-1173; Website: http://becomekinetic.com. Email: educate@becomekinetic.com.
