The new interchange at I-580 and Moana Lane in Reno brought about a round of “firsts” for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT). The construction of a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), a design that is growing in popularity in the U.S., has set the stage for future interchange projects that aspire to be built in an innovative and efficient manner.

With just 64 working days to complete the project, prime contractor Granite Construction renovated the old interchange into one that accelerates traffic and reduces the risk of accidents. The $6.9 million project began in Sept. 12, 2012, when the interchange was partially shut down for reconstruction. Work proceeded in two phases and was complete before the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 21, 2012. Project improvements include: drive time see DIAMOND page 12

LOS ANGELES (AP) A bullet train linking Northern and Southern California will be an audacious engineering feat because the line must cross two mountain ranges and a halfdozen earthquake faults, experts said. Planners foresee the 141-mi. (227 km) segment from Bakersfield to Los Angeles running through vast tunnels, delving through the Tehachapi and San Gabriel mountains, plunging 500 ft. (152 m) underground in some places and soaring over canyons on viaducts 200 to 330 ft. (61 to 100.1 m) high, the Los Angeles Times. “It is the project of the century,” said Bill Ibbs, a civil engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley who has worked on high-speed rail projects around the world. The $68 billion first phase of the project is expected to run more than 500 miles between San Francisco and the Los Angeles and Anaheim areas by 2029. Eventually, supporters hope for high-speed lines running all the way from Sacramento to San Diego. Conditions set for the project say it must be able to reach San Francisco from Los Angeles in no more than 2 hours and 40 minutes. The top speed for the Bakersfield-to-LA segment could be 220 mph. In September, the Federal Railroad Administration approved construction of the first segment, a 65-mi. stretch from Merced to Fresno in the Central Valley. Construction is expected to begin next year. see BULLET page 32

Ritchie Bros. to Hold FirstAuction in China Ritchie Bros. will be holding its first unreserved public auction in China during Spring 2013. Although relatively new to the Chinese heavy equipment market, unreserved industrial auctions have been a quick and easy method for

equipment buyers and sellers to conduct business on a global scale. Ritchie Bros. will bring the certainty of unreserved auctions to Chinese equipment buyers and sellers now that the company’s wholly owned foreign enterprise appli-

cation has been approved by the Chinese government — making it the first foreign auction company to receive this approval. Ritchie Bros. has formally leased land in the see RITCHIE page 34

Innovation Demonstrated at Caterpillar Press Event Caterpillar introduced several new technologies to national and international media recently at its facilities in Peoria, Ill. These technologies included a new more fuel-efficient wheel loader, a hybrid excavator and Tier IV Final. The event included a tour of the new Caterpillar Visitor Center. Caterpillar invested more than $52 million into the 50,000 sq. ft. facility and the new Peoria Riverfront Museum projects, which achieved LEED Gold status. The new visitor’s center allows for self-guided journeys of Caterpillar’s products, history, achievements and opportunities through interactive displays and exhibits. Visitors have the power to unleash their inner engineer and design their very own Cat machine, or hop onto a simulator and see firsthand what it’s like to operate a Caterpillar excavator, dozer or loader. A heritage gallery displays a Caterpillar D8 tractor and informs of the company’s milestones, while the Caterpillar Jobsite Theater promotes job opportunities at the company. The new center also features the 797F Mining Truck Theatre, which is a 62-seat theater that was converted from a working 24 ft.-tall (7.3 m), 400-ton (362.9 t) Cat 797F mining truck. The 797F is approximately the size of a two-anda-half-story house, covering more than 4,500 sq. ft. (418 sq m). Caterpillar had to create new wheels for the truck-converted theater, since the tires on the 797F weighed too much (11,680 lbs [5,298 kg]). The Next Generation Is Here, the title Caterpillar gave to the event, refers to the idea that Caterpillar is bringing the future to the present. Cat 966 K XE The Cat 966K XE wheel loader; is powered by a Cat C9.3 Acert diesel engine, delivering a peak net rating of (290 hp) 220 kW. It incorporates a high-pressure common rail injection system for a clean, efficient burn. The Cat clean emissions module, which incorporates a diesel oxidation catalyst, a diesel particulate filter and the Cat regeneration system, functions automatically without interrupting the machine’s working cycle. The engine can be controlled to operate more efficiently over a wide range of conditions. During deceleration, machine momentum can be recovered as free energy to power implements or the cooling fan, while significantly lower working engine speeds result in reduced soot build-up for longer regeneration intervals, cutting fuel use further. The 966K XE is equipped with an advanced powertrain system, which delivers up to a 25 percent fuel efficiency, according to the company. The 966K XE has been engineered to deliver efficiency by utilizing an integrated Cat continuously variable transmission system. A hydraulic pump and motor (variator unit), allows for a smooth and continuous gear ratio change between engine speed and machine speed. The variator provides this ratio flexibility while reducing the heat load generated by the drive train when the machine is digging, pushing and climbing under heavy load. The continuously variable gear ratio of the variator also enables the engine to run at a more efficient operating range independent of machine ground speed. Power is transmitted through the variator unit (versatile gear ratio) as well as a parallel mechanical gear path (highest efficiency). Power through the variator and mechanical paths are combined through a series of planetary gear sets in order to maximize the transmission efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions. Media demoed this machine in Caterpillar’s two-acre

The Cat 336E H uses a method of storing energy for later use. The company chose a hydraulic hybrid over an electrical one since the technology decreased overall operating costs.

Cat 336E H The Cat 336E H uses a new hydraulic hybrid technology developed by Caterpillar. “A hybrid is independent of any particular technology; it doesn’t have to be electric,” said Ken Gray, global product manager of large hydraulic excavators of Caterpillar’s excavation division. “Caterpillar has developed, built, and tested electric hybrid excavators, but, until now, we had not found a hybrid approach that would actually lower our customers’ owning and operating costs. Large excavators operate in high-production applications in which fuel is a very significant operating cost for our customers. So, the 336E H, the hybrid version of our workhorse 336E, is ideal for introducing our new hydraulic hybrid technology,” said Gray. The 336E H has all of the same powerful advantages of the 336E with the biggest difference between the two models having even greater fuel efficiency. To achieve added fuel savings, the design of the 336E H uses three building block technologies that: 1) Conserve fuel with engine power management via the Cat electronic standardized programmable (ESP) pump, which smoothly transitions between the hydraulic hybrid power sources, engine, and accumulator. 2) Optimize performance using restriction management via the patented Cat adaptive control system (ACS) valve, which intelligently manages restrictions and flows to seamlessly control machine motion with no loss of power, and to

ensure operators experience no difference in control, hydraulic power or lift capability. 3) Reuse energy via the hydraulic hybrid swing system, which captures the excavator’s upper structure swing brake energy in accumulators, and then releases the energy during swing acceleration. Customers can expect the 336E H to use up to 25 percent less fuel compared to a standard 336E, and up to 33 percent less fuel than the 330/336D, said Caterpillar. All three of the technology building blocks, conserve, optimize and reuse, are integrated together to maximize fuel savings in a variety of applications. see PEORIA page 34

Project Improvements Include Congestion Relief, Safety DIAMOND from page 1

savings, efficiency, congestion relief, safety, cost and time savings, reduction in head-on crashes and reduction in maintenance. This is the first transportation project in northern Nevada to use the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) method of procurement. CMAR, which is also frequently used in the construction of schools, is “particularly suited to renovation type projects because this type of project is time sensitive, has a complex scope of work, can be subject to changes that become apparent late in the design process and requires a high level of complex construction management.” according to the Washoe County School District. A final NDOT first on this project is the inclusion of “green” bike lanes resulting in safe bicyclist access. Phase one included reconstructing the I-580 southbound Moana Lane off-ramp and prep work to reconstruct the northbound on and off-ramps. Phase two included reconstruction of the I-580 Moana Lane northbound on and off ramps, the southbound on ramp, and Moana Lane from just west of the southbound off-ramp to just east of the northbound off-ramp. The Diverging Diamond Diverging diamond interchanges are often used at intersections located beneath or above freeway bridges. “NDOT wanted to improve this interchange without a lot of land acquisition or extended disruption to traffic,” said NDOT spokesperson Scott Magruder. Diverging diamond interchanges have been in use for years in France. The first diverging diamond interchange in the United States was completed in 2009 in Springfield, Miss., followed by other successful diverging diamond interchanges in states such as Utah. Plans for diverging diamond interchanges also are proceeding in many additional states.

Looking up the completed northbound on ramp.

East end of the project looking to the west.

Diverging diamond interchanges were ranked one of Popular Science’s top 25 “Best of What’s New.” How It Works At a diverging diamond interchange, traffic briefly crosses over to the left (opposite) side of the roadway, safely guided by traffic signals at each crossover. This allows vehicles to turn left onto freeway on-ramps without stopping and without conflicting with through traffic. In other words, traffic is briefly routed to the opposite side of the road at an intersection. Because vehicles are now traveling on the left side of the road, they are on the same side of the road as freeway onramps and are able to take the freeway on-ramp or other exit without waiting in separate turn lanes as in traditional intersections.

Grading the 395 / I-580 South Bound Moana Off Ramp.

Through traffic simply travels through the intersection and switches back to the right side of the road after the intersection, all guided by roadway signs and markings. Diverging diamond interchanges feature signs, striping, curbs, headlight glare screens and concrete barriers to guide and safely separate opposing traffic as it moves through the interchange. The Benefits The free, unsignalized left turns onto freeway on-ramps, etc. helps reduce congestion. “The key to the DDI is the ‘free’ left turn,” said Magruder. There are fewer signal phases and a shorter wait at traffic lights by eliminating signalized left-hand turn lights. DDIs often reduce by half the number of conflict points at which vehicles can potentially collide, and make “wrong way” entry onto the freeway ramps extremely difficult. Additionally, they can be more cost and time-effective to build, as they often require less land and fewer potentiallycostly changes to existing road structures. DDIs also provide heightened pedestrian/bicyclist safety with the construction of designated, enclosed shared use paths built in the middle of the diamond interchange. Granite Construction, headquartered in Watsonville, Calif., has built two other Diverging Diamond Interchanges and works on 2,000 construction projects annually. The I-580 project called for 20,000 cu. yds. (15,292 cu m) of roadway excavation, and installation of 9 manholes and 17 drainage inlets. Crews layed 9,000 ton (8,163 t) of aggregate base and 3,800 ton (3,446.6 t) of dense grade paving. They also poured approximately 6,500 cu. yds. (4,970 cu m) of PCCP and set more than 15,000 linear ft. of white paving forms. In 64 working days on this interchange, Granite logged over 25,000 man hours with zero injuries. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Metso C120 Jaw Combines Crushing Efficiency, Safety Metso’s Mining and Construction Technology’s C120 jaw crusher is the 13th member of the C-series range of crushers. Metso’s C120 combines uncompromising reliability, crushing efficiency and versatility in both stationary and mobile applications with safety and ease of use. “When starting the C120 project, we listened closely to our customers and collected field data from a number of sites. Based on that, we decided to design the crusher cavity and kinematics first. As a result, Metso can now offer aggregates producers, large-scale contractors and mining companies a new crusher that meets all the standards set for any demanding application,” said Ilkka Somero, Metso’s product manager of jaw crushers.

Metso C120 jaw crusher.

Productivity Through Long Stroke and Fixed Jaw Die The productivity of the C120 is the result of several new design elements. The crusher features a long and aggressively directed stroke, and a fixed jaw die longer than previously seen in this crusher size class. The C120 has a large feed opening of 34 by 47 in. (86 by 119 cm) and an aggressive cavity cross section, resulting in a high performance and reduction ratio, according to the manufacturer. In terms of cavity volume and crusher weight, the C120 is positioned between the existing Metso C116 and C125 jaw crusher models. Easy to Install The C120 is easy to install, due to its compact design, and includes an optional integrated motor bed and guards. Being wellbalanced, the C120 is quick, easy and costefficient to install using rubber mounting

Metso when designing a new crusher. The C120 features optional robust composite flywheel guards that allow quick and safe access to all service points. The standard delivery includes lifting tools for jaw dies, cheek plates and toggle plate, contributing to operational safety when changing wear parts. The Metso C120’s nominal power is 200 hp (160 kW), operating speed 230 rpm, closed side setting between 2.75 to 8 in. (70 to 20 cm). The operational weight is 57,200 lb. (26,000 kg), excluding options. For more information, visit Safety the Highest Priority The optional, robust composite flywheel guards allow www.metso.com. pads underneath the crusher mounting brackets. No separate horizontal supports are needed. The crusher can be mounted in a variety of ways to ensure an easy fit onto an existing or new steel structure. Mechanical or hydraulic setting adjustment systems are available for quick, easy and safe setting adjustment. For jaw dies, several cavity options are available. Depending on the customer’s preference, it is possible to use either single- or two-piece jaw dies.

Powerscreen Warrior 1400X Offers Easier Serviceability Powerscreen, a provider of mobile crushing and screening equipment, launched the new Warrior 1400X screen. Damian Power, Powerscreen global product director said: “The new Powerscreen Warrior 1400X offers improved performance, lower operating costs and easier serviceability while building on the reliable foundation of our classleading Warrior 1400 scalper.” The 1400X has been designed with economy in mind. With reduced engine running speed and enhanced hydraulics, the 1400X offers a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 15 percent in comparison to its predecessor. This can translate into a substantial financial saving for customers over the lifetime of the machine. Improved versatility and design specifications are other key achievements of the Warrior 1400X, with the screening angle range widening of 13 to 19 degrees. Standard stockpiling capacity on all conveyors has increased by up to 25 percent. With the chassis riser option and the telescopic side conveyor option, the fines and mid-grade stockpiling capacity is increased to more than double that of a standard

Warrior 1400, according to the manufacturer. Time required for set-up and shutdown is faster than the previous model, which will be of particular benefit to contractors. Serviceability features include a screen box raise function and the ability to raise the collection conveyor. Optimal chute design in conjunction with the new feeder undertray slide-out feature will minimize any potential spillage and reduce any harmful material build-up around the machine. The Warrior 1400X now boasts improved mobility with a two speed tracking system as standard. The high speed mode is further enhanced with automatic engine speed ramp-up making the 1400X the fastest tracked machine in its range, according to the manufacturer. The Warrior 1400X can be fitted with either a Tier III/Stage 3A Caterpillar C4.4 ATAAC — 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 120 hp (90 kW) at 1800 rpm, or a Tier IVi/Stage 3B Caterpillar C4.4 — 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 110 hp (82 kW) at 1800 rpm. HCT’s Aftermarket Hydraulic Kits Meet Job Site Challenges For many years, hydraulic excavators were mostly dirt-digging machines. Over time, however, a huge number of attachments have been developed that have exponentially expanded the capabilities of the excavator. These attachments, which include items such as breakers, shears, thumbs, brush-cutters, augers and compactors, all require the installation of one or more additional (or auxiliary), hydraulic circuits that must be integrated into the existing hydraulic system. In the early days, the owner of such an attachment would have to use his own ingenuity to obtain this auxiliary capability. It was not unusual to see draped hoses tied up with wire, or even Schedule 80

threaded pipe, to supply the attachment. Leaking fluid and frequent downtime were commonplace, and perhaps even expected. Safety was sometimes sacrificed for expediency. Today, such methods are not acceptable. Safety and environmental concerns are paramount. Leaks and failures that were once viewed as unavoidable annoyances are now viewed as serious events with consequences. HydrauliCircuit Technology (HCT) has become a leading provider of aftermarket hydraulic kits, engineered to withstand the job site challenges that come with attachment operations. Whatever the nature of the job, whether construction, quarry or demolition-related, the auxiliary circuits are subjected to stresses more extreme than any other on an excavator. The high flows, high pressures, fast cycle times, pulsation and external shock are factors that must be considered in the cir-

cuit design phase. The experienced design engineers at HydrauliCircuit Technology have continuously upgraded hydraulic components in their kits for many years, as new and better technology became available. One highly visible

HydrauliCircuit Technology (HCT) has become a leading provider of aftermarket hydraulic kits, engineered to withstand the job site challenges that come with attachment operations.

example of this philosophy is the use of an extremely heavy-duty tubing and clamp system that reduces potential leak points, and provides the most durable circuit available, exceeding, in most cases, the strength of existing machine components, according to the manufacturer. HCT tube-hose connections include industry-standard SAE-approved O-ring Face Seal (ORFS), and Code 62 4-bolt flange connections. Tubing is custom-fabricated and bent for each excavator model. Tube ends are Pulse-MIG welded for superior strength. A wide array of customdesigned forged steel tube clamps ensure that the tubes will not move under severe stress. Components are protected with UV-resistant powder-coating to withstand harsh environments. Navin Baliga, president of HCT, pointed out that some kit manufacturers use thin-walled flared/ferrule connections. “This might be suitable for industrial applications, but not for use on an excavator,” Baliga stated. “With the demanding appli-

cations placed on excavators, especially in the demolition industry with the use of second and thirdmember shears, keeping the integrity of all the hydraulic connections is key for any machine owner. Designing a long tube with multiple sections might enable other manufacturers to pull generic pieces from stock, and to ship quickly. Unfortunately, this practice greatly increases the number of leak points and the resulting connections are disliked by some service technicians. HydrauliCircuit Technology eliminates potential leak points by connecting the tube ends directly to the hose assembly and do not require a male-to-male union connector to achieve this.” Bobby Hudson, national sales manager of HCT, added, “HCT components may take a day longer to build, and may cost more to ship overnight, but in the long run, customers benefit from the value in a product that is designed and built to operate safely and to last for see KITS page 24

years.” Customers, such as Phil Spiers, service manager at JESCO, a multi-state Deere dealer in the northeast, agree that HCT’s components are the way to go. “We rely only on HydrauliCircuit Technology for our hydraulic kits,” Spiers said. “They are custom built for our application and easy to install. Their tech support department is knowledgeable and always ready to support our service department.” William Neely, Cowin Equipment Company Inc., also is an HCT client. “We rely on HydrauliCircuit Technology as one of our supply sources for hydraulic kits on excavators and tractor loader backhoes. The quality of the components, and the heavy-duty design of their hydraulic kits provides us with just one of the competitive edges that's needed in today's economic climate,” said Neely. Texas-based RB Everett Company is another company that has relied on HydrauliCircuit Technology for years. Dean Henderson, company vice presi-

dent, said, “We like doing business with them. We like the fact that they understand our commitment to quality and customer service. The heavy-duty components used in their kits sets them apart from their competition. We service a demanding industry and customizing and adapting to the needs of our customers is a key to our success. HCT understands our industry and has worked with us on meeting this challenge head-on.” HydrauliCircuit Technology has been producing auxiliary hydraulic kits for more than 15 years, with manufacturing and installation facilities near Atlanta. HCT’s kits are preferred by end-users, dealers and OEMs across North America. All kits include comprehensive, easy-to-follow instruction manuals that contain detailed information with drawings, photos, proper tightening and routing techniques and safety information. Mack Pinnacle Delivers Christmas to U.S. Capitol The 2012 Capitol Christmas tree was illuminated in an official lighting ceremony Dec. 4 on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, following a 5,300mi. multi-week journey on the brawn of a Mack Pinnacle model. Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), accompanied by 17-year-old Ryan Shuster, flipped the switch, lighting the 73-ft. Engelmann Spruce and marking the official beginning of the holiday season in D.C. Shuster, from Colorado Springs, Colo., was randomly selected from 1,300 youths throughout the state who created more than 5,000 handmade ornaments for the tree. Decorated with approximately 10,000 low-energy LED lights, the tree will be lit every evening from dusk until 11 p.m. throughout the holiday season. The tree was hauled in a special trailer and pulled by a SmartWay-certified Mack Pinnacle model driven by former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell. A second Mack tractor hauled the ornaments and dozens of companion trees that will decorate other government buildings in Washington. Distinctively decaled with a determined Bulldog pulling a tree across a snow-covered landscape, the Mack Pinnacle is equipped with a near-zero emissions MP8 engine with Mack ClearTech SCR technology and an advanced mDRIVE automated manual transmission, which optimized fuel efficiency and performance by assuring that the truck was always in the right gear. braved whiteout conditions through mountain passes, freezing temperatures and tight maneuvering in small towns and big cities. Throughout, the Mack truck handled all challenges with ease. “Hauling the Capitol Christmas tree this year has been a special assignment that we have really enjoyed,” said John Walsh, vice president of marketing for Mack Trucks. “This is a job our trucks are built for — demanding hauls across all kinds of terrain with very important cargo. We are pleased that the U.S. Forest Service and Choose Outdoors trusted this job to Mack, and we look forward to again hauling the Capitol Christmas tree in 2013.” The tradition of the Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as “The People’s Tree,” began in 1964. National forests rotate the responsibility each year of providing a tree that will stand on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol as a gift to the nation.

Mack Truck Joins U.S. Forest Service to Provide Training Recognizing that cultivating a strong pipeline of qualified drivers is vital to the future success of the trucking industry, Mack Trucks partnered with the U.S. Forest Service job corps Civilian Conservation Centers (JCCCC) to offer a ride-along opportunity for a Job Corps student. Kandy Kilbreth, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., rode along in a Mack Pinnacle model from Warrenton, Mo., to St. Louis, Mo. during a leg of the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour. The opportunity was designed to help Kilbreth determine if the pursuit of a commercial driver’s license and a career as a truck driver is the right choice for her. Kilbreth, who is enrolled in the Welding Career Technical Training program at Mingo JCCCC in Puxico, Mo., has expressed interest in truck driving as a career. “It was a great experience to ride along in the Mack Pinnacle during the Capitol Christmas Tree tour,” Kilbreth said. “I think I would enjoy driving a truck for a living, and the experience of riding along with a professional driver helped me better understand what it would actually be like to be a driver.” According to a November 2012 report released by the American Trucking Associations, there will be more than 200,000 unfilled positions in the trucking industry for qualified truck drivers by 2022. “Since trucks haul nearly 100 percent of consumer goods, Mack believes it’s critical that we do all we can to help people get excited about a career in truck driving,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “One way to do that is to offer students like Kandy the opportunity to ride in a big rig.” Organized by the U.S. Forest Service, the

ride-along took place during the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour, which is traveling from the White River National Forest in Colorado to the U.S. Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C. The Mack Pinnacle model, fitted with a special trailer, is hauling a 73-ft. tree, which will be displayed on the U.S. Capitol lawn. Mack also provided a second Mack Pinnacle, which is transporting 100 companion trees to be displayed throughout the Capitol. “Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers offer hands-on training in over 30 vocational trades. Job Corps centers provide the education, vocational instruction, and job skills training necessary to obtain gainful employment and earn a living wage,” said Tony Dixon, Forest Service Job Corps national director. The Mingo JCCCC is a residential vocational and educational training program serving students ages 16 to 24. Job Corps is the nation’s largest residential, educational and career technical training program for young people in the United States. The Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, official driver of the Mack Pinnacle bound for the Forest Service operates 28 JCCCCs nation- U.S. Capitol, shares his experiences as a truck driver with Kandy Kilbreth, a U.S. wide in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service Job Corps student. Department of Labor. “The Job Corps program is impressive because of its focus on vocational and technical skills, both of which are assets for American economic growth,” Walsh said. “Mack is proud to partner with the Forest Service on this work-based learning project, and we value the opportunity to help the next generation understand how essential the trucking industry is to our economy.” For more information, visit www.macktrucks.com.

Weather Guard Protect-A-Rail Cab Protectors Height Reduced Weather Guard Truck Equipment has reduced the overall height of Protect-a-rail cab protectors to make them more compatible with current full-size truck model year designs. In turn, two mounting brackets have been modified to allow the new Protect-arail cab protectors to be installed with the Ford F-250/F-350 super duty and the Dodge Ram. Protect-a-rail cab protectors are designed to protect the cab of the pickup from shifting loads in the cargo area and provide heavyduty cab protection. “The new Weather Guard Protect-a-rail

cab protectors deliver improved safety and durability, along with an attractive appearance for today’s trucks,” explained Mike Sover, Weather Guard senior product manager. In order to reflect these changes, new part numbers have been established. Part numbers for models 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1912, and 1915 will be discontinued. The new Protect-a-rail cab protectors and mounting brackets will still be compatible with all older model year vehicles. For more information, visit www.weatherguard.com.

East Improves Integrated Stairway for Flatbed Trailers Securing a flatbed load often requires climbing up on — and down from — the deck of the trailer. That’s not easy, and can even be potentially dangerous. To provide a simpler, easier and safer entrance to and exit from the flatbed deck, East Manufacturing first introduced an optional integrated stairway a few years ago. Now East has improved this option by adding a locking door enclosure that allows for additional lights and license plate mounting, while giving the rear end a more custom appearance. “The East integrated stairway is a smart safety option for flatbed trailers,” said Bill McKenzie, product manager of platform products. “When open, the deck lid locks securely in the upright position via double rods that slide into two specially designed receivers. The first Bill McKenzie of two handrails is located under Platform Products the lid, providing a handy 45 degree vertical handhold that’s above deck height. The second handrail is built next to the steps, which are made of pooch-punched aluminum for both drainage as well as a skid-resistant surface.” In the down position, the deck lid latches securely to prevent bouncing during transit. The deck lid is load bearing, so the trailer loses zero deck area because of the stairs. Now East has added a new door that can be locked and fitted with ID lights that comply with federal DOT requirements, as well as a lighted license plate mounting area. The integrated stairway is all East Manufacturing has improved its flatbed integrated stairway option by adding aluminum, so no extra weight is added to the trailer. a locking door enclosure that allows for additional lights and license plate mountFor more information, call 888/405-3278 or visit www.eastmfg.com.

BULLET from page 1

California hasn’t considered such an immense north-south rail link since the 1870s, when Southern Pacific Railroad bored through the Tehachapis. Thousands of Chinese laborers dug and dynamited the way up and through the mountains, creating 18 tunnels on a route that climbed more than 4,000 ft. (1,219 m). Today, only freight trains use the route. Passenger service through the Tehachapis was discontinued in 1971. The high-speed train won’t be able to use the twisting loops of that route; it will need a straighter, flatter path to maintain its speed. A corridor for high-voltage lines must be built through the Tehachapis to supply the train, which will need an estimated 2.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity daily, equal to about a quarter of the average daily output of Hoover Dam. On the way between the Central Valley and the south, the bullet train could zoom across the Mojave Desert, pass through an 8mi. (12.9 km) long tunnel under the canyons of Santa Clarita north of downtown Los Angeles and race through northeastern San Fernando Valley neighborhoods, which may

require removing some homes and businesses from the route. It would go underground near Glendale, run under the Los Angeles River and probably would hit street level again around Chinatown. The exact route won’t be chosen until next year but about 200 people already are working on the southern segment. Among other things, the tracks will have to cross a halfdozen earthquake faults, including the infamous San Andreas, which could produce a 7.5-magnitude temblor. The chances of a quake occurring while a train is going over a fault is “very small” but big temblors could cause a derailment, said C. Michael Gillam, a vice president at engineering company Parsons Brinckerhoff, which is overseeing the design of the southern segment. Ideas being considered are reinforcing viaducts and creating a system that automatically slows or stops trains during quakes. While the engineering challenges are daunting they are not unique: Switzerland is building a 35.4-mi. (56.7 m) rail tunnel under the Alps. And China has a highway bridge 1,627 ft. (496 m) high.

Planning Pays Off for Ritchie in China RITCHIE from page 1

Tianzhu Free Trade Zone (Shunyi, Beijing) in preparation for this first unreserved public auction in China. Strategically located within minutes of Beijing Capital International Airport, the Tianzhu Free Trade Zone is connected to one of China’s largest roll-on, roll-off ports in Tianjin. “We have used Ritchie Bros. auction services literally all over the world,” said Sam Farley, used equipment manager, AMECO U.S.A., who has been buying and selling heavy equipment at Ritchie Bros. auctions for many years, and during 2011 has bought and sold at Ritchie Bros. unreserved auctions in the Middle East and North America. “Their method of advertising, their customer base, the flyers that they send out, their e-mail advertising, their internet support services — are without equal in the industry.” Showcasing China to the World: the Unreserved Public Auction Ritchie Bros. has been conducting unreserved public auctions since the company was founded in 1958. At an

unreserved auction each item sells on auction day to the highest bidder — regardless of price — with no minimum bids or reserve prices. Sellers are not allowed to bid on their own equipment to drive up the price. Interested buyers can bid on equipment on auction day at the auction site, or live and online or they can also place a proxy bid. “We strongly believe in the unreserved auction process as it is the most fair and transparent way for equipment buyers and sellers to conduct business,” said Peter Blake, CEO, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “As a buyer, you can be confident that the item you want to buy will sell on auction day to the highest bidder — regardless of price. This hallmark of our business has helped build confidence and trust among our customers. And as a seller, you can be certain that you will get global fair market value for your equipment on auction day, since we invite the world to the sale of your equipment.” In 2011, the company sold $3.7 billion of equipment at 339 unreserved industrial and agricultural auctions around the world.

Ritchie Bros. has been working with Chinese buyers and sellers for many years. The company’s current customer base includes Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and construction companies that have been selling their equipment at auctions overseas and learning about the international equipment market. Ritchie Bros. also has been working with Chinese government officials for a number of years to acquire the proper permits for holding auctions in China. “We established our presence in China in 2004,” added Chris Edwards, Ritchie Bros. general manager of China, Korea and Mongolia. “We have been learning China’s market, customer needs and behaviors, regulations and business processes. Our goal has always been to be a good, educated citizen in China.” There are currently 81 upcoming auctions on the Ritchie Bros. auction calendar, including unreserved auctions in Australia, Spain, France, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, the United States and Canada. Press demoed the 336E H, not on a proving ground, but as a 3D hologram. Testing and building Cat products includes creating 3D machines and environments, as well as a suite of other productivity-enhancing technologies. The hologram is displayed in a room, called “The Cave.” The 3D glasses even monitor head movement, and adjust the image accordingly. Cat c9.3 Acert Caterpillar also introduced the next generation of the Cat C9.3 Acert industrial engine, which is designed to meet U.S. EPA Tier IV Final/EU Stage IV emission standards. The new engine is a six-cylinder, 9.3 L platform that produces power density with ratings from 300-400 hp (224-298kW). It is equipped with a fullyintegrated clean emission module (CEM), which includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. “Utilizing a Cat common rail fuel system and new aftertreatment technology, the Tier IV Final/EU Stage IV C9.3 Acert improves fuel consumption by up to four percent compared to the current Tier IV Interim/Stage IIIB model,” said Mike

Reinhart, industrial power systems marketing manager. The Clean Emission Module simplifies OEM aftertreatment installation with a flexible design that allows mounting in horizontal or vertical configurations. This allows Cat’s existing customers to easily transition from Tier IV Interim/Stage IIIB to Tier IV Final/Stage IV. Shawn Baker of Cagle Enterprises in Comanche, Texas seems to be pretty interested in this Volvo L120 wheel loader.

Kevin Thompson of Big “T” Construction Services in Marshall, Texas, is going to bid on this John Deere 700J dozer.

Vaughan Draws 800 In-Person, Online Bidders to Auction

V

aughan Auction Group held an auction on Dec. 6, in Wills Point, Texas. The company had sales of 4.8 million with approximately 800 bidders in-person and live internet bidding. Vaughan sold equipment to buyers from Malaysia, Jordan, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Peru. Prices held and Vaughan was extremely pleased with the activity. The company looks forward to its next auction in February.

Jim Whitton, an independent contractor in Canton, Texas, thinks this Cat D3 dozer would be just the machine for building ponds.

Benney Hooker, independent contractor from Yantis, Texas, has just finished giving this Cat D6N a good “once-over.”

Kyle Norman, Norman Excavation and Trucking LLC in Canton, Texas, has been getting the measurements on this Cat 12 H motorgrader.

Jerry Calame, Calame Farms in Wortham, Texas, is interested in this John Deere 700J … the bidding should be hot!

The unexpected cold weather drove many into the new Vaughan Auction indoor bidding area.

Thomas L. Jenkins, retired, Wood County in Yantis, Texas, takes a photo op with this Cat D6R.
