THE FATHER OF ASPHALT
By Chuck MacDonald CEG CORRESPONDENTWOA Trade Show Owes Early Growth to Rick Moore
IT’S BEEN SAID THAT EVERY GOOD IDEA HAS MANY FATHERS. This is true for the World of Asphalt, which is being held this year in Nashville on March 25 to 27. Rick Moore, retired president of Lehman-Roberts in Memphis, is one of those many fathers. He was part of the World of Asphalt show planning committee for 10 years.
Moore led Lehman-Roberts of Memphis, Tenn., for nearly 50 years before retiring. The familyowned company was founded in 1901 and sold recently to Granite Construction.
At one time, the World of Asphalt was recognized as the fastest-growing trade show in the country. Moore called his time at the helm of the trade show “a whole lot of fun.”
The idea for the show began to germinate in the fertile soil of the National Asphalt Pavement
Association’s (NAPA) annual meeting. Often the meetings were accompanied by a paving demonstration in the same city where the meeting was held.
“I remember enjoying the demo, but discussing with some of those in attendance that the demo was being shown to the wrong audience,” said Moore. “The folks at the NAPA conference tended to be the CEOs and engineers at companies. We began thinking that the people who needed to be at the demo were the people who regularly used the equipment. The more we talked we decided there needed to be a separate event that included teaching about how to run the equipment.”
The demo also discussed how the equipment was often used incorrectly.

FAE USA
FAE WILL ATTEND the World of Asphalt Show and Conference in Nashville, Tenn., March 25 to 27, 2024. World of Asphalt has become a staple of FAE’s trade show schedule over the years, and the company is excited to display its new line of road planers at this year’s show.
FAE is not new to the road construction and paving game. Its multitask heads, soil stabilizers and rock crushers are proven tools of the trade, having been used for asphalt milling and full-depth
reclamation for years. However, when FAE headquarters began to look for the next big innovation, it was clear that there was a tool they were missing.
Given the effectiveness of FAE’s rotor and tooth technology in its multitask asphalt-milling PTO products, the obvious next step was to create scaleddown, hydraulic solutions for skid steers. Thus, the road planers were born from the proven design of the multitask machines, using roughly the same rotor and tooth technology.
Approximately one year ago, FAE launched its road planer line with three products: two road planers for skid steers and one disc road planer for skid steers. With this range of products, end users were able to find a product catering to their specific needs.
FAE has released two new products since that time: an additional road planer for skid steers and a road planer for excavators. Together, these machines provide a powerful and versatile toolkit and have proven to be a game changer in the asphalt paving industry, according to the company.
FAE’s skid steer road planers, compatible with skid steers of 60 to 135 hp, cut up to 10 in. deep, providing a boost to speed and efficiency. The RPL/EX road planer for excavators provides versatility, allowing operators to access tight, difficult-toreach spaces with ease. The RWM/SSL, FAE’s rock wheel trencher, is a disc-type road planer that cuts up to 20 in. deep, with optimized side output that keeps the trench clean and gives true depth.
With FAE’s carefully and artfully designed machines and with the quality and durability they are known for, FAE’s road planer line is sure to continue to grow in popularity across the industry, according to the company. FAE will hold a press conference at the show on March 26, during which Giorgio Carera, CEO, and Lee Smith, product manager, will be available for questions. FAE looks forward to meeting with existing partners and new industry professionals at the World of Asphalt show this year.

VOLVO
THE ASPHALT INDUSTRY is the next stop for electric equipment — are you ready?
As reducing emissions becomes more important each day, switching to electric is one of the fastest ways to make an impact and meet evolving jobsite requirements.
The Volvo DD25 Electric asphalt compactor is a fully electric machine designed for the road segment, and it’s available to order now.
A few reasons to consider the double-drum DD25 Electric:
• Saving big on fuel and maintenance because there’s no internal combustion engine. No DEF, no filters, no cyclical fluid checks.
• It provides instant power while working the controls, but when the operator lets go, the machine shuts off, eliminating idle time. And to get working
again, it turns on instantly when the controls are moved.
• It offers 24 kW of available power, which is 30 percent more than its conventional counterpart. The result is a more responsive machine in terms of speed and vibrations. It also performs better on grade due to the size of its components and better at high elevations.
• It’s based on the same architecture and components as the Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader, which have been proven successful in a variety of applications and markets over the past few years.
• The 360-degree visibility and high frequency compaction allow operators to achieve a smooth asphalt surface with speed. Frequency can be adjusted from 3500 vpm/55 Hz to 4000 vpm/67 Hz to
cater to different applications.
• It can typically operate for a full shift on a single charge, depending upon the type of job and intensity of the work cycle.
• Zero tailpipe emissions mean a cleaner and more enjoyable work environment for operators, site teams and passers-by. If used alongside other electric equipment, it creates the opportunity for a zero-emission workplace.
• It’s made in the USA. The DD25 Electric is produced at Volvo’s North American headquarters in Pennsylvania.
And perhaps the best news of all: Charging is not as complex as one might think. Stop by the Volvo Construction Equipment booth (#1231) to discuss it.

ETNYRE
MAINTAINING ROADWAYS
is a perpetual challenge faced by contractors nationwide. Over time, asphalt surfaces naturally develop cracks due to various factors like heavy traffic, weather fluctuations and chemical exposure.
Neglecting these cracks can lead to more significant road damage, posing safety hazards and increasing maintenance costs. However, with the innovative crack sealing solutions offered by Etnyre, road maintenance becomes more manageable and cost-effective.
The Etnyre crack sealer features:
• Versatile controls allowing automatic or manual operation
• Two sealant loading doors for easy access
• Enclosed high-pressure diesel-oil burner with automatic ignition
• Faster heating with direct hot oil coils
• Environmentally friendly flush-free system
• Sealant tank capacity of either 250 or 400 gal.
Crack repair is essential because it makes roads safer. When cracks form, pieces of asphalt can come loose, resulting in potholes and deterioration.

Trailers Designed for Performance
When you invest in a Towmaster trailer, you invest in your business. Our trailers let you do your job without getting in the way and offer you peace of mind.
TOWMASTER
WHEN YOU THINK of the average trailer, most people would picture a flat deck with metal ramps at the end where the equipment would be loaded and unloaded. Ramps are helpful, but sometimes the ramps are too steep, narrow, or it is too difficult to line the cargo up with the ramp to move it onto the trailer deck.
The tilt style trailer utilizes gravity and the deck itself to load equipment. The deck tilts at an angle, making it simpler and safer to load and unload equipment. The deck also serves as its own ramp, so there’s no need to store extra ramps.
Tilt trailers aren’t for every situation, but when hauling a wide variety of items with different wheel base measurements, or if extra deck space is needed, the full length of the trailer deck can be utilized. When using a foldable loading ramp, some of that deck space is sacrificed in order to accommodate the ramp. With a tilt trailer, the deck is the ramp, so no need to keep space aside.
Another big advantage of a tilt deck is safety. A tilt trailer can help protect equipment from damage because it’s wide enough to drive machines and vehicles directly onto the deck, eliminating the sometimes tricky process of using ramps.
Because the mechanism that tilts the deck is so vital to it working smoothly, more upfront maintenance is required, such as oiling and regular checks for rust and wear. Poor maintenance could cause the tilt mechanism to become unusable, rendering the main attraction of the trailer useless until its fixed. A tilt deck might also cost more up front because of its wider range of capabilities, so keeping a budget in mind is imperative when shopping for a particular trailer.

EAGLE CRUSHER CO.
EAGLE CRUSHER CO., a leading manufacturer in the crushing and screening industry, continues its rich tradition of new product innovation in 2024. The company will introduce two new-plants-in-one, on display in Eagle’s Booth 1931 at World of Asphalt/AGG1, March 25 to 27, 2024 in Nashville, Tenn.
With just one capital investment, producers will get the benefits of an Eagle Crusher MaxRap 25 Portable, or the benefits of an UltraMax 1200-OCSS, opencircuit secondary system. Both plants feature Eagle’s UltraMax 25 impactor with its high reduction ratio and North America lifetime rotor warranty.
The MaxRap 25 Portable provides the same precision crushing of the stationary MaxRap, enabling operators to crush RAP at multiple locations with ease. Actuated diverter chutework allows multi-feature deck selection, blending and bypass and the calibration chute for sampling verifies that the mix-design spec requirement is correct. The plant’s side-discharge conveyor may be used for stockpiling or returned to another conveyor for re-circulating back to the plant for resizing. The system also may be used for screening only, conveying all material to the stockpile. MaxRap 25 Portable plant produces highly uniform, cubicle spec product with a minimum of white rock and a minimum of fines.
Remove the actuated diverter chutework, and the plant becomes a 1200OCSS. Recycled concrete and aggregate producers will benefit from the greater flexibility the newly-redesigned 1200-OCSS provides. Operators now have a choice whether the top and middle deck material both go to the impactor, or the middle deck material goes directly to stockpiling so only the oversized material is crushed.
The 1200-OCSS includes a 6x20 triple-deck horizontal screen for screening before crushing, along with screening options for multiple spec products. It includes discharge conveyors for second and third decks, as well as for fines. The side-discharge conveyor transports the crushed material to other equipment for further processing, stockpiling, or to another conveyor for re-circulating back to the plant screen for sizing. The 1200-OCSS is designed to follow any Eagle Crusher primary jaw plant, but regardless of the primary crusher your operation is using, UltraMax impactors are a perfect fit as a secondary crusher.
Partnering with producers worldwide to provide versatile, durable, and reliable crushing and screening equipment, Eagle Crusher Co. has been an industry leader for more than 100 years.

HILLS MACHINERY
HILLS PAVING — A DIVISION OF HILLS MACHINERY
— spent 2023 building the foundation of an asphalt paving-dedicated organization that will bring an all-new level of expertise, dedication, equipment and resources to the paving market in the southeastern United States in 2024. This included adding numerous asphalt paving industry experts, such as Charlie Butler and Bo Stevenson, plus building out new service teams and fleet management/support solutions led by Adam Sisson that are dedicated to its partners in the paving market.
“Our territory includes regions where growth is being driven extensively by industrial and technological expansion, population growth and steady infrastructure investment — both through the federal infrastructure bill and local funds,” said Jim Hills, president, Hills Machinery. “We saw an opening throughout the region to provide a dedicated equipment sales, service and support channel with an expertise in asphalt paving — including 24hour support and fleet management programs where we’ll partner more intensively with each contractor on the uptime of each machine.”

MOORE from page 4
“I asked one of our foremen who was attending the event if that happened at our company,” said Moore.
The foreman replied humorously, “Not all on the same day!”
The idea for a separate trade show caught on quickly. The concept was launched as an annual show in February 2001 at the Wyndham Palace Resort in Orlando as a cooperative effort between the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). WOA has run every year except ConExpo-Con/AGG years since. The show has grown exponentially in the last 20 years. The 2001 show had 3,200 asphalt paving professionals seeing 28,000 sq. ft. of displays from 86 exhibitors.

SAKAI
THE GW754 (ORIGINALLY INTRODUCED IN 2005 AS THE GW750), is still the world’s only vibratory pneumatic tire roller. All other tire rollers on the market are static. This roller is suitable for a wide variety of materials from HMA to chip-seal to soil and aggregate base.
The GW754 uniquely vibrates the front and rear tires. This gives the benefit of kneading asphalt resulting in compactive effort equivalent to static rollers of much higher weights. The 10-ton GW754 compacts like a 25-ton static tire roller and many static weights in between using the various vibration settings.
This weight advantage means easier transport from job to job and replacing various weighted traffic rollers with one machine. Combining the GW754 with a double drum vibratory roller can mean two rollers on a job achieving required density and surface finish where three rollers would normally be needed.
Dynamic kneading action of the super-flat tires also serves to increase density uniformly through the lift and tighten longitudinal joints without crushing the aggregate, increasing the chance for achieving density and joint-related bonus incentives.
According to Sakai, the Federal Highway Administration published a multi-state study in 2020 that showed a 1.8 to 2.5 percent density increase from using a vibratory tire roller stating that “vibratory pneumatic rollers had a particular impact on increasing density”. Additionally, compared to conventional rounded tires, the super-flat tires provide more uniform contact pressure resulting in a smoother pavement surface finish.
This roller also is ideal for many specialty applications. For thin layer chip seal, the GW754 is used protect from fretting and cracking of the aggregate by increasing the bond ing between the asphalt and aggregate. The vibratory tire roller also allows for quiet compaction of bridge decks and residential areas, thorough compaction of thick lifts and meeting stringent quality requirements of airports — overall densi ty, joint density and smoothness.
Why Run Sakai Rollers in Your Fleet?
Sakai specializes only in compaction machines. Its asphalt and soil com pactors are engineered by employing the science behind optimal materials compaction. Sakai machines are easy for operators to control, cheap for equipment managers to maintain, deliver superior finishing results and are built for long life, according to the company.
Japanese reliability, quality and dependability that comes from simplicity — thicker frames, thicker drums, real switches and knobs. Its machines are backed by an industry leading 3year 3,000 hour fullmachine warranty.
Sakai invites atten dees to see the GW754 equipped with its new Guardman automatic emergency braking safety technology at World of Asphalt booth 1301.

This helped to grow the show quickly.”
In 2022, the World of Asphalt and AGG1 brought the industry together at the Music City Center exhibition floor in Nashville with some 440 companies covering 193,000 sq. ft. of the center. The show broke previous records with 11,400 asphalt paving and aggregate professionals in attendance. This was the fourth time WOA had come to Nashville, marking the 20th anniversary of the trade show.
When Moore took over from Wayne Evans as the show’s chair in 2006, WOA was growing rapidly. During Moore’s tenure, the show also added National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA – AGG1 in 2007).
“These associations were natural partners as they are closely aligned with the paving industry,” said Moore. “In addition, several construction publications jumped in and began promoting the event.
Moore and other leaders noticed the organic growth of the show.
“Places like this year’s location in Nashville were five hours or less drive time from a huge number of companies. That meant that a company could load four or five guys in a truck and drive to the show.”
Previously a company executive might buy an expensive piece of paving equipment, then expect his paving team to operate it. With WOA the workers could see the equipment for themselves, get training and envision how it would work for the jobs they do every summer.
“It’s no good to buy a piece of equipment then later learn that your team doesn’t like it or has to fiddle with it all day long to make it run right,” said Moore.
“The classes help people know how to run the
equipment right,” he said. “It also reinforces safety concepts and helps the people who attend to become better leaders at their companies.”
The paving industry and construction in general face the challenge of recruiting and retaining workers. WOA fits nicely into that niche.
“It’s fun for the people to come to a place like Nashville,” said Moore. “Of course, the workers see it as a perk. And it demonstrates that the company sees them as valuable. In return, the company gets a better trained, highly motivated employee.”
During his time with WOA, Moore had many surprises, especially about the reach of the asphalt pavement industry.
“One show was scheduled for Baltimore, which was a considerable distance from where other shows had been held. Still, the attendance was great, and it was a highly successful show.”
The impact of the show reached beyond the United States as well.
“We saw companies come from Japan, China, Netherlands, South America and other regions bringing a lot of good ideas with them. I even met someone from the Mongolian Asphalt Pavement Association who gave me a Genghis Khan memento,” he said. “Without question, WOA is a win for the industry, a win for the companies and a win for the employees.”
“Rick’s contributions to World of Asphalt’s prosperity spanned a full decade, culminating in NAPA Man of the Year honors when our Annual Meeting last visited Orlando in 2017,” said Audrey Copeland, NAPA president and CEO.
Copeland led the Association’s latest annual gathering in Orlando, held Jan. 28 to 31, 2024.
“Rick oversaw the show’s expansive growth and strengthened our strategic partnerships, setting the stage for our most recent recordbreaking show in 2022,” she said. “We look forward to continued success built on this foundation when we meet again in Nashville.” CEG

MARINE DREDGING CONTRACTORS
intent on discovering methods to enhance project safety and efficiency are invited to visit Measutronics Corporation at Booth 124 during World of Asphalt.
Measutronics systems typically start with positioning, utilizing GNSS or robotic total station technology, ensuring real-time position accuracies ranging from sub-meter to millimeters. Position sources, chosen to be cost effective and accurate to meet project specifications, are coupled with other sensor inputs in configuring our customized guidance system offerings.
Irrespective of machine make and model or nature of the application — whether mechanical or hydraulic dredging, or material placement via bucket, grapple or conveyor belt — Measutronics’ guidance systems empower operators to:
• enhance situational awareness through
user-defined avoidance zones, ensuring safe operation amidst submerged hazards, cable crossings, pipelines and more
• boost efficiency in submerged operations, where 3D visualization and guidance systems
supersede the limitations of relying solely on “working by feel”
• Precisely position or remove material relative to design or grade, while seamlessly tracking progress and production, minimizing rework requirements
Additionally, the company offers sonar technology to verify and corroborate results displayed by 3D visualization and guidance system. Scalable solutions encompass single beam, multibeam and interferometric sonar technology, providing submerged views in demanding and hazardous applications — “sonars for steel toes.”
Measutronics understands the complexities of marine construction and dredging. Stop by Booth #124 to discuss how Measutronics can put its 26 years of experience to work on your project to discuss marine construction and dredging solutions.

FELLING
FELLING TRAILERS’ AIR BI-FOLD RAMPS SYSTEM was recently awarded a U.S. patent grant. The Air Bi-Fold Ramps system was introduced to the construction and paving industry in 2020 and will be featured on Felling’s 22-1/2-ton FT-45-2 LP, a tandem-axle low-profile flatbed tag trailer, at this year’s World of Asphalt show in Nashville, Tenn.
A key feature of Felling’s design is the operation of the flip ramp. The flip ramp locks out fully when extending, preventing scraping or marring of the ground. Another key feature is Felling’s controlled flow air ramp technology, which provides for soft ground contact of the ramp, keeping new surfaces free from being damaged.
The Air Bi-Fold Ramps are 45 in. wide by 11 ft. long wood inlay. For more than a decade, Felling Trailers has offered air ramps with available lengths of 6 ft. to 8 ft. The 11-ft. Air Bi-Fold ramps were designed to accommodate the load angle necessary for loading cumbersome low-clearance equipment
such as paving equipment and directional drills. The Air Bi-Fold ramps’ length gives the operator a gentler, more gradual incline to ease loading/unloading with its 9.5-degree load angle with the option of air ride suspension when the air is dropped. Felling Trailers’ Air-Ramp technology allows operators to use the tow vehicles’ onboard air system to power the ramps, eliminating the maintenance of an onboard electric/hydraulic system.
“These ramps are available on a wide range of air brake-equipped trailers and allow the safe loading of most paving equipment with ease. Air-operated ramps are far more reliable than those powered by an electric/hydraulic pump, making it a clear choice for many paving crews,” said Nathan Uphus, Felling Trailers’ sales manager.
The system is currently available on 20, 22.5, 25 and 30-ton tag series, with plans to expand into the semi-trailer lines.
