WORLD OF ASPHALT AND INNOVATION By Jeff Winke CEG CORRESPONDENT

World of Asphalt offers specialized training programs and certification.

What makes an international conference and trade show such as the World of Asphalt Show & Conference exciting is the opportunity to see the newest technology the industry has to offer. Innovations in milling and paving machines; technology and software systems that enhance equipment performance; and professional services that help asphalt and aggregate industry contractors make more money are all displayed. The asphalt market is truly dynamic. Each year it is amazing to see new products and refinements/enhancements of existing products. The large equipment manufacturers are always vying to offer machines that are easier to operate, more productive, and more efficient while being gentler to the environment. When visiting the equipment manufacturers this year at World of Asphalt, look for these innovations and trends:

operator’s line of sight and that can pivot so the operator can position themselves to see not only down the side of the machine but also back. Look for machine controls and display screen to be intuitively arranged and for them to move with the seat as it swings into better viewing vantage. And look for the seat to be positioned up a little higher, giving the operator the advantage of seeing more of their surroundings. Look for pavers with an air curtain feature. Operator comfort is increased through an airflow system that creates a barrier near the back wall of the hopper. This air curtain feature pushes the asphalt fumes and heat up and away from the operator platform, ensuring a cooler and more breathable space.

Innovative Designs Look for gravity-fed pavers. These must be paired with material transfer vehicles to ensure a steady flow of HMA to help reduce physical and thermal segregation in the asphalt mix. With the design, gravity is what feeds the material directly to the auger from the mass flow hopper, replacing the need for slat conveyors, hopper wings, push rollers and tandem front buggies used in conventional pavers. Gravity-fed pavers are said to be more fuel efficient because less engine power is required as compared to a traditional paver conveyor system, which requires more moving parts. The simple design of the gravity-fed paver also has been shown to reduce maintenance costs and technician time.

Easy Maintenance Some paving and milling machine makers are designing their machines with the repair and maintenance technician in mind. Look for logically-placed access doors on the sides and tops of machines. Look for engine hoods that lift hydraulically and with a back up manual-lift feature. Manufacturers who are interested in making maintenance easier are providing an engine compartment that is roomy enough to make component access convenient. The intent behind these refinements is to ensure quick and thorough maintenance and reduce having technicians take short cuts because it’s too difficult to work on a machine.

Increased Operator Comfort Look for machines that feature greater operator comfort. It has long been acknowledged that operator comfort can reap many dividends. A less fatigued machine operator is more productive, less accident prone, and happier. Look for operator platforms that swing out to improve the

Compact Machines for Smaller Spaces The market for smaller asphalt pavers, generally under 21,000 lbs (9,525.4 kg) has improved as the economy has improved. The key is versatility. A compact machine can be used in housing and commercial projects requiring different paving widths for parking lots, bicycle paths and driveways. And they can be helpful in urban areas with growing downtown revitalization projects. A compact machine can pave a narrow alley and with screed extensions can easily turn a lot into paved parking. Look for compact wide rubber-track asphalt pavers that are designed to work in all types of sub-grades and paving applications. see WOA page 18

VÖGELE A new-design material transfer vehicle and a new 10-ft. (3 m) tracked paver — both from Vögele — were introduced at World of Asphalt 2016. They are among eight products for asphalt paving — plus a Kleemann crusher — that were shown at Wirtgen America’s stand. The newly designed MT 3000-2i material transfer vehicle from Vögele weighs 56,000 lb. (25,401 kg), with 18-ton (16 t) storage capacity, heavy enough to get the job done, but portable enough to haul anywhere. Its low profile gives it a low center of gravity, and innovations give it an edge in performance and productivity that the conventional products don’t have, according to the manufacturer. The MT 3000-2i can move 1,300 tons (1,179 t) per hour, and active remixing is achieved by two 16-in. (40.6 cm) diameter conical augers in the receiving hopper. Both primary and secondary conveyor belts are 43 in. (109 cm) wide, and are heated to keep material from sticking, and eliminate “warm up” loads. The secondary conveyor can swing 55 deg to left or right. Heated scrapers also keep the belts constantly clean with a minimum of fuss. The Super 2000-3i 10-ft. tracked Super 2000-3i replaces the Vision 5200-2i, and is the first of a line that will supplant the acclaimed Vision series. The Super 2000-3i features a basic width of 10 ft. and a maximum paving width of 28 ft. (8.5 m). It has a top placement rate of 1,540 tph (1,397 t). Due to its compact dimensions, maneuverability, variable paving width and high performance, the Super 700-3i is an ideal paver for surfacing small paths, roadways and open areas. Successor to the popular Super 700-2, the small Super 700-3i is a practical machine for both commercial and municipal contractors. One of Wirtgen’s most powerful cold mills, the Wirtgen W 220 is supplied with a 7-ft. 2-in. (2 m) drum. The W 220 provides the milling width and depth of the heavier W 250i — Wirtgen’s biggest and most powerful mill — but with a lower weight that enables it to more easily meet legal weight load limits. The Wirtgen W 120 CFi medium-size cold mill is part of the new series of intermediatesized cold mills — the W 100 CFi, W 120 CFi and W 130 CFi — based on a common platform and introduced in 2015. The W 120 CFi is a compact front-loader in the 1 m class, with

a milling width of 48 in. (1.2 m). The new W 60 Ri small milling machine represents Wirtgen small mill capabilities. The W 60 Ri is a small milling machine with a milling width of 23.6 in. (50 cm) and a maximum milling depth of 8 in. (20 cm). With its 141 hp Tier IV-interim engine, it weighs 16,534 lb. (7,500 kg). The 13.2-ton (12 t) HD+ 120i VV HF tandem roller from Hamm provides high frequency vibration in both drums, ranging from 45 to 67 Hz. The 11.5-ton HD+ 110i VO tandem roller from Hamm combines Hamm Oscillation compaction in one drum, and conventional vibration in the other. Hamm’s oscillation technology lowers vibration stress on the environment while reaching an optimum of compaction quality, according to the manufacturer.

The Mobirex MR 110 ZSi EVO 2 and the larger MR 130 Zi EVO 2 impact offer the highest technologies in aggregate production and construction materials recycling, and are Tier IV final emissions-compliant. They’re especially well-suited for processing of RAP and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). EVO 2 represents the continuing evolution of the successful EVO Contractor Line, with additional benefits in terms of economy and operational safety. The MR 110 ZSi EVO 2 has a crusher inlet opening of 43.3 in. (110 cm), which provides feed capacities of up to 350 tph (317.5 t). VOLVO Volvo Construction Equipment will soon introduce the Volvo Intelligent Compaction (IC) for select Volvo asphalt compactors available in two packages — Volvo IC and Volvo IC with density direct. In addition to offering the pass mapping, temperature mapping and data storage features of the Volvo IC system, Volvo IC with density direct includes real-time density mapping technology. “Density mapping has been described as the ‘holy grail’ of intelligent compaction. The first to come up with the technology will be the one to radically advance the paving industry, it was said, and that’s exactly what Volvo has done,” said Fares Beainy, research engineer at Volvo Construction Equipment. “For years, contractors have relied on IC systems with stiffness calculations instead of density, which is not the true metric by which contractors are evaluated and paid. With density direct, operators have real-time access to the metric that ultimately determines the success of their work, density.”

but reduces time spent taking core samples, improves quality and leads to much greater uniformity than nuclear gauge testing. Calibrations also are “saved” by the machine, so operators can assign calibrations to certain elements of a job, and quickly switch back and forth between calibrations to meet the demands of specific job elements. Operator-Friendly Interface The user interface of Volvo IC with density direct depicts a density map, showing each square foot of rolled asphalt in a color representing density, and also provides a real-time numerical density reading displayed in the corner of the screen. Both Volvo IC and Volvo IC with density direct offer real-time temperature and pass mapping data. Using the 8 by10 in. color monitor of the Volvo IC system, the pass mapping function captures each compactor pass and drum overlap with an individual color, so that the operator can easily see gaps and work to maintain uniform coverage. Temperature mapping provides the operator with a temperature “map” that shows the path of the compactor overlaid with the last recorded surface temperature. Data Storage and GPS Data gathered from pass mapping, temperature mapping and density mapping is stored on the IC system’s internal 14 GB hard drive, which provides enough space for approximately seven months of data logging. Data can be backed up to USB drives in VEDA format — the Freeware system promoted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for IC systems. With optional Differential GPS, the data gathered from Volvo IC is linked to location information accurate to within 0.5 in. Both Volvo IC packages meet state DOT and FHWA requirements for intelligent compaction specifications. Independently Tested and Proven Density direct was developed and tested as part of the FHWA Highways for LIFE Technology Partnerships Program. The technology was used on various full-depth and overlay asphalt pavement projects and later evaluated by independent users at sites throughout the country. The results were overseen by University of Oklahoma researchers and showed that density direct calculations were proven to be within 1.5 percent of core samples every time at 180 test locations.

Within the density direct system is a calibration screen, where the user sets the target density for the project. Once fully calibrated with data specific to the application, the Volvo intelligent compaction with density direct system produces a density calculation that is accurate to within 1.5 percent of core sampling, providing a real-time reading of density values over 100 percent of the mat.

Set the Density and Get to Work Within the density direct system is a calibration screen, where the user sets the target density for the project. Once fully calibrated with data specific to the application, the Volvo intelligent compaction with density direct system produces a density calculation that is accurate to within 1.5 percent of core sampling, providing a real-time reading of density values over 100 percent of the mat. With this real-time data, the operator is given the chance to make any necessary adjustments while asphalt is being paved. This not only reduces the occurrence of inadequate densities that drive up project costs,

Availability in Q4 2015 Volvo IC and Volvo IC with density direct will be available in Q4 2015 on new Volvo asphalt compactors, initially including Volvo DD110B, DD120B and DD140B models sold in North America. Aftermarket availability for Volvo asphalt compactors will follow in the future, exclusively through Volvo Construction Equipment dealers. ISUZU Isuzu dealers retailed 20,725 Isuzu trucks to customers in 2015 — a record for Isuzu trucks in the United States.

Isuzu Commercial Truck of America Inc. announced that it shattered two long-standing sales records in 2015 — for the highest parts sales and for sales of Isuzu commercial trucks. Isuzu dealers retailed 20,725 Isuzu trucks to customers in 2015 — a record for Isuzu trucks in the United States. This record included a whopping 10.5 percent gain in Isuzu N-Series sales versus 2014. This outpaced Isuzu’s competitive set in Class 3 through 5 commercial vehicles. Calendar-year registrations of Class 3 through 5 vehicles through October 2015, the latest month for which figures are available, were up only 5 percent, less than half the N-Series pace. Meanwhile, Isuzu sold 5.5 percent more parts in the United States than it did in 2014, representing the most parts ever sold.

“After celebrating the 30th anniversary of Isuzu trucks here in 2014, what better way to start our fourth decade in the United States market than with record-breaking sales?” asked Shaun C. Skinner, executive vice president and general manager of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “Thanks to the strength of our product, the loyalty of our customers and the dedication of our dealers, we expect to be setting more records for many years to come,” Skinner said. ROADTEC

The RP-175’s full counter-rotate ability and track flotation allow the paver to maneuver and operate in tight areas without sacrificing tractive effort or pushing power.

At the show this year, Roadtec will be highlighting the “Stealth Paver,” the SP-100, paired with a Shuttle Buggy material transfer vehicle. The gravity fed machine eliminates the conveyors used in conventional pavers. This reduces operating costs for fuel consumption and maintenance, and prevents down time. Best of all, contractors regularly see a significant improvement on IRI smoothness ratings when using the SP-100, according to Roadtec. Also on display in the Roadtec show space will be the all-new 8 ft. (2.4 m) track paver, the RP-175E. The RP-175’s full counter-rotate ability and track flotation allow the paver to maneuver and operate in tight areas without sacrificing tractive effort or pushing power. In moving to Tier IVF engine and emissions standards, the engineers took the chance to make some major improvements across the whole platform. Upgrades include increased visibility for the operator and better fume extraction while maintaining Roadtec’s quality. Building all of its machines from plate steel to final paint in the same facility allows Roadtec the ability to use a material ideal for final design, not making tradeoffs for manufacturing ease, the manufacturer said. On the other side of the display will be the RX-600e cold planer, which offers a combination of power, balance and efficiency.

In addition to optimum weight balance and high productivity, the RX600e is available in three-track and four-track versions. The RX-600e offers cut depths of up to 13 in. (33 cm) and 86 in. (218 cm) wide, depending on the cutter drum. Roadtec now includes a dust extraction system standard on all mills, to keep the job site cleaner and safer. Roadtec can supply specialty drums for many applications, including profiling. Roadtec drums can now be configured with the all new QX1 quick change cutter tooling system. This system increases the life of the cutter tooling while reducing time and effort to perform routine maintenance. The Rp-175e paver and RX-600e mill can both also get Roadtec’s Guardian Remote Telematics system. With Guardian, the machine’s electrical system, hydraulic system, engine, pressure transducers, grade/slope control, and fuel consumption can be closely monitored in real-time via cellular signal. The Guardian system allows owners and service technicians to closely monitor the machine’s activity and easily troubleshoot the machine’s various systems. The Guardian system will automatically email all fault codes and maintenance reminders. KASI INFRARED The F1000T tracked paver meets Tier IV Final standards and increases productivity through operator comfort and visibility. The paver eliminates segregation with Dynapac’s feed control system and features 18-in. (45.7 cm) wide, smooth or threaded, rubber track bands that create the friction needed to push fully loaded pavers up steep inclines. Atlas Copco will be showcasing the production-ready F1000T paver at booth 2514 during World of Asphalt in Baltimore, Md., March 17 to 19. This is a major milestone for the F1000T since a prototype was displayed during ConExpo 2014. The paver features two operating stations on each side that are ergonomically designed to reduce operator fatigue. The stations swing out to provide maximum visibility to the front and rear, and controls have grouped switches for simple operation and a display for vital paver parameters. The operating station overlooks one of the lowest decks in the industry — 5 1/4 ft. (1.6 m) tall, which contributes to maximum visibility. The paver ensures continuous material flow using Dynapac’s exclusive auger-conveyor feed-control system. The system uses four ultrasonic sensors that measure paving material and automatically adjust conveyors and outboard augers to optimize material flow. The system eliminates segregation and delivers a

constant head of material and the smooth flow needed to produce quality mats. Mechanics can access all hydraulic system and engine components easily by opening the paver’s steel access doors that feature gas springs. The gas springs make it easy for mechanics to open the service doors and securely holds the doors open during repairs. In addition, the engine compartment’s configuration allows mechanics to remove internal components independent of others. For example, a mechanic can remove the diesel particulate filter without taking out other components first. The material flows through the Carlson front- or rear-mounted screed to construct flaw-

less mats. A tractor-mounted 34-kW generator heats the screed’s full working width, which is as wide as 26 ft. (7.9 m) with the Carlson EZ R-1020 screed. The front extension screed is ideal for paving parking lots, county roads and city streets because contractors can change its width quickly to suit to the project’s demands. The robust rear extension screed extends to 26 ft. wide for use on large paving projects, including highways, interstates and airports. For more information, visit atlascopco.com. IROCK CRUSHERS IROCK Crushers is highlighting its TS-522 heavy duty screener at booth 1614 during World of Asphalt/AGG1 in Nashville, Tenn. This screener, one in a line of five IROCK models, is suitable for medium- to large-scale operations and is ideal in applications such as recycling, sand and gravel, mining, or as a part of a crusher circuit, according to the manufacturer. Built for high productivity, the TS-522 features extra hopper capacity and screening area, and a high stockpiling capability. The TS-522 is powered by a 129-hp Caterpillar C4.4 engine and is capable of processing materials at a rate of up to 670 tph (608 t). In terms of hopper capacity, the 14-ft. (4.3 m) wide hopper feeder that comes standard on the TS-522 is rated to 12-cu.-yds. (9.2 cu m). This extra space is built to accommodate a greater amount of material, enabling higher production rates. The TS-522 also offers ample screening area, which further contributes to the machine’s high output ratings. With a 22 by 5 ft. (6.7 by 1.5 m) top deck and a 20 by 5 ft. (6 by 1.5) bottom deck, the machine has a total screening area of 210 sq. ft. (19.5 sq m). This two-deck design enables users to produce and sort up to three different size products. For customers needing four finished products, IROCK offers the TS-522 TD, a three-deck version of the screener. The decks can be interchanged so customers have more control over end-product size. Hydraulically folding side conveyors feature high stockpiling heights and capacity, providing the stacking heights necessary to match the machine’s high output rates. Able to stack up to 16 ft. 8 in. (5 m) on the sides and 16 ft. 2 in. (4.9 m) on the tail, these conveyors provide the convenience of running the machine for longer before needing to reposition finished material. In addition to the 129-hp Caterpillar C4.4 engine, the TS-522 offers additional heavy-duty add-ons specifically designed for high production rates and extra durability. A vibrating livehead also is an option to accommodate heavier, sticky materials. When running heavy, dirty materials
