feeling pumped-up The GCC’s construction sector continues to amaze me with its resilience and optimism. Even in the throes of the recession of a few years ago, no one was ready to write the obituary of what many experts said was a sector that would never reclaim its glory days. Then, when the oil prices plummeted and the Saudi construction sector followed suit, the market players still stood firm in their belief that a rebound was just around the corner. Even now, with only a glimmer of hope for a mini-recovery this year and the next - and no convincing evidence – there are several big brands who are betting big on the region. Powered access specialist Genie is one of them. In this issue, CMME learns how the rental and facilities management sectors are set to power the Terex-owned brand to a stellar performance in the months ahead. Meanwhile, the UK’s Euro Auctions, one of the biggest machinery auction houses in Europe, has set up shop in the region, which it will be inaugurating with its first ever auction in the region at its Jebel Ali premises in Dubai. The company’s business development manager, Jonnie Keys, says volumes will be high at the event. Middle Eastern participation at Euro Auctions’ auctions has always been high, and now with the auction being in the region’s backyard at a time when it is opportune to sell, the numbers can only improve. Improvement is what compaction equipment specialist Hamm has constantly done to its rollers in its illustrious history. Around 35 years ago, it came up with the oscillating roller drum, which it has perfected over the years. In this issue, the German brand explains the principle behind the innovation

and how it aids in smoother compaction. The makers of truck-mounted concrete pumps are also coming up with innovative solutions to the challenges facing their sector, the most vital of which is to be able to pump higher as our region builds taller. The major market players are all applying their own ingenious solutions to the problem. While Italy’s Cifa has gone for carbon fibre booms to reduce weight in building pumps that reach more than 80m high, Leibherr and Laticrete have opted for space-saving stability and out-of-the-box thinking in concrete finishing solutions respectively. Sounding a cautionary note of safety in this upbeat world of new approaches is over-theneck protective gear maker Centurion. The fabled British maker of helmets and other gear has taken it upon itself to improve the region’s construction safety market through a renewed focus on the Middle East, with manufacturing bases and advanced products. As the summer starts its last leg, there are enough signs to suggest that, once the seasonal stupor ends, the region is pumped up and raring to go with a burst of activity. To find out how that activity unfolds, keep reading.

Case appoints new distributor in Bahrain Case Construction Equipment has appointed AMA Motors as its new official distributor in Bahrain to serve construction businesses across the island country’s territory. Effective from June this year, AMA Motors will support Case customers from its premises in East Riffa. The 2,000sqm dealership includes a showroom, an area that displays Case equipment in a job-site setting with gravel and rocks, a workshop and a training facility. In addition, AMA also operates two well-stocked parts shops to provide fast and efficient parts back-up, said Case. AMA Motors will sell and support the full range of Case equipment, including backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders. Also in stock will be Case’s range-

topping 885B motor grader, alongside heavier wheeled loading shovels. AMA will also provide flexible equipment leasing options for Case customers. According to Case, this appointment builds on the long-standing and successful partnership that has developed over the years between parent company CNH Industrial and AMA Motors, which has been serving as distributor of Case’s sister brands from the CNH stable. Franco Invernizzi, Case’s regional director, said: “We are very pleased to extend our collaboration with AMA Motors. They will bring to Case customers over 60 years of experience and the personal care of a family-owned business, together with the backing and resources of a global brand like Case.”

Case Construction Equipment has introduced an all-new SiteControl CoPilot powered by Leica Geosystems. Available factory-installed or as a retrofit on select Case M-Series dozers, the CoPilot system bridges the gap between automatic and indicate-only systems and offers a cost-effective entry into 2D and 3D machine control. The system is the result of a global partnership with Leica Geosystems, and comprises an inertial measurement unit, wiring harness and in-cab

display. It allows operators to set a desired slope/grade reference and automatically holds it without the need for lasers, masts or GPS, regardless of underfoot conditions, enabling operators to easily achieve and maintain a smooth surface, slope or grade. Once the operator has set the slope/grade specifications, the system automatically adjusts blade position to produce a reliable and consistent surface, eliminating the need for additional passes.

Riyadh places order for 242 MAN buses

Riyadh’s public transport system will be bolstered with 242 MAN buses after operator SAPTCO (Saudi Public Transport Company) signed a deal with French public transport company RATP Dev (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) for the vehicles. Since 2014, SAPTCO and RATP Dev have together operated a Public Transport Company (PTC) in the kingdom, in a joint venture in charge of building Saudi Arabia’s public transport network. While SAPTCO looks after fleet management, Paris-based RATP Dev is responsible

for operations. The joint venture plans to operate 100 routes in the kingdom with 1,000 vehicles. The buses are scheduled to be delivered in 2018 and will be the first MAN buses on Riyadh’s roads. MAN Lion’s City M buses are 10.5m long and feature Euro-5 engines with 213kW of power. Meeting the transportation requirements of Riyadh, the model offers 29 seats with ample leg room and generous space in a high-performance, air-conditioned vehicle with tinted windows.

Hitachi claims world’s fastest elevator Hitachi has revealed that its ultra-high-speed elevator has achieved a speed of 1,260m/min, the world’s fastest. The speed was recorded during a test of the elevator under installation at the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre, a skyscraper complex building in China. In May 2016, the ultra-high-speed elevator reached 1,200m/min as its rated speed. It is now in the final adjustment phase and Hitachi has been pursuing even higher speeds, modifying its control units and safety devices. During an on-site test, it achieved its running speed of 1,260m/min, recorded

by the National Elevator Quality Supervision and Inspection Centre (Guangdong), a public elevator accreditation body. While the test was conducted for the purpose of technical development of Hitachi elevators, the elevators in the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre will run at their rated speeds of 1,200m/ min when they go into service, said Hitachi. Features of the record-setting elevator include a permanent magnet synchronous motor to achieve both a thinner profile and higher output power, a compact traction

Trimble and Komatsu have announced a collaboration to improve customers’ ability to exchange 3D construction site data between Komatsu and Trimble construction software, making managing mixed earthworks fleets easier and allowing a more holistic view of site operations. As part of the collaboration, which comes in response to customer demand for mixed fleet interoperability, Trimble and Komatsu are working together to develop

an application programme interface to enable compatibility between their software platforms. Trimble Connect software, a cloud-based collaboration ecosystem, will support Komatsu’s KomConnect platform for sharing digital construction data that can significantly benefit contractors and project managers. “Our collaboration with Trimble is an important step in supporting our customers who operate mixed machine fleets.” said a senior Komatsu executive.

Terex crawler IN GermaN harbour

T

he Port of Mannheim in Germany recently saw a Terex Superlift 3800 crawler crane help assemble two massive dockside cranes. The job was being done by crane company Steil, based in Trier, Germany, on behalf of Kranwerke Mannheim. However, first one of the massive crane girders had to be loaded at the Speyer Port so that it could be taken to Mannheim by ship. The client for this job was Tobies, a manufacturer headquartered in Speyer. As far as the Steil team was concerned, there was only one machine that could reliably take care of both jobs: the Terex Superlift 3800, which now goes under the name of CC 38001 as a result of the Demag brand being reintroduced. “There’s no doubt about it – without this crane, we wouldn’t have been able to take care of these jobs with the kind of flexibility we needed,” says Steil project manager Sebastian Sehl. The crane immediately demonstrated its flexibility when loading the 78m, 105t crane girder onto a pontoon at the Speyer Port, as the required radius could increase by up to 3m if the load were lifted from the heavy goods vehicle and onto the pontoon at low tide. In contrast to a mobile crane with its full counterweight, increasing the Superlift counterweight and radius would enable the Superlift 3800 to take care of the lift. “That’s why we planned with a variable Superlift counterweight of 65-125t. That allowed the crane to work flexibly with a radius of 28-30m and made sure that the job would still be feasible even at

low tide,” explains Sehl. At Mannheim Port, the Steil team erected two container cranes at the shipyard. For the first step, the hinged legs for dockside crane 1 were erected with the help of two assist cranes, one belonging to the 200t class and the other to the 130t class. At the same time, the fully assembled, 241t crane girder was lifted with the Superlift 3800, which was set up with a 54m main boom, 50t central ballast, 165t superstructure counterweight and 54t Superlift counterweight. This configuration enabled it to pick up the fully assembled crane girder, lift it 30m and then move 15m with the load. With a radius of 16-18m, the crane then lifted the girder to a height of 32m and turned it so that it was parallel to the dockside crane’s hinged legs, which could then be bolted to both of the dockside crane’s bogies and to the girder. After this, the two assist cranes were moved so that they could bring the fixed legs into position for installation on the bogies. “During all this, the crane had to hold the heavy girder in the required position without the girder swinging back and forth, which definitely was made more difficult by the wind hitting them, but never to the point that it became critical,” Sehl says. The next step was to bring the 15t trolley onto the runway girder, using two 200t cranes. “This enabled us to set up both dockside cranes within the required timeframe. During the entire process, the Superlift 3800 proved once again to be the perfect choice thanks to its enormous power reserves and flexibility,” Sehl summarises.

Value your worth

Mike kenyon, partner and head of Machinery and business assets at cavendish Maxwell, discusses the top five reasons to get your Machinery and business assets valued

D

o you know what your business and machinery assets are worth? As we are now in the thick of the hot, quiet summer months, this quite often leads to a period of inactivity. Therefore, this is just the right time to start looking at those tasks which tend to get left to the last minute, one of them being valuing one’s company assets. So here are the top five reasons why you need to get up-to-date machinery and business asset valuation advice. Insurance assessments: reinstatement or indemnity There are two bases for insurance: reinstatement with new, which replaces the existing with brand-new; and indemnity, which replaces items like for like, i.e. those in a similar condition or of similar age. In the event that a small part of your machinery experiences partial damage, the cost of shipping, supplying and fitting the new part can be a considerable amount. Therefore, insurance should cover the replacement cost, not the historic cost or market price. If a company originally bought an asset at a discounted price, the true insured figure should reflect the price for a walk-in customer, not the discounted price. In the case of older equipment which

has no modern equivalent replacement, or for companies who wish to reduce their premium payments, a corporate decision should be made to assess the equipment for indemnity value only. Indemnity value takes into account the used value of similar older machinery. The valuation report can be used to assist in negotiations with insurers and insurance brokers when setting insurance premiums. It is important to have a valuation report for insurance policies showing the manufacturers’ details and specifications, along with the new replacement cost of the machine, including delivery duty, any spare parts and optional extras that are included. In the event of a loss, an independent valuation report will speed up the negotiation process to enable the replacement of equipment. Loan security Many construction machines can go some way to acting as loan security collateral should the owner wish to raise finance. In this scenario, age and condition, as well as the stated hours on the machine and engine, are vital components to be aware of. Attachments and options are also taken into account when considering a value estimate, along with past sales of similar machines, the manufacturer and known reliability of the type and model. Past sales and what is currently on offer can give an indication of the likely value, although it will be the valuer’s final assessment, based on experience and

15 “Past sales and what is currently on offer can give an indication of the likely value, although it will be the valuer’s final assessment, based on experience and judgement, which will be used for arriving at the final valuation”

judgement, which will be used for arriving at the final loan security valuation. When searching for the correct valuer, it is important to ensure their reports are recognised by banks and adhere to international guidelines, such as those by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The report should also be signed by RICS - or API-certified valuers who are registered as specialised machinery and business assets surveyors. Accounting purposes New owners taking control of the business and business assets require a valuation so that they can allocate the purchase cost and link the assets to their original invoices. This exercise is normally run in conjunction with an insurance assessment, which can assist in reviewing the asset register for accuracy and to revalue for insurance cover. Reporting includes a priced, detailed schedule showing assets and location, together with a link to the invoice copy and cost information; this is essential for management accounting. International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) On July 1, 2015, the UAE Commercial Companies Law No.2 of 2015 was introduced by the UAE government, requiring that any valuations for accounts purposes in the country must adhere to international accounting standards. This was assumed to mean that they are to be undertaken in accordance with the IFRS. These standards require asset values to be reported on a regular basis, and as more international regulations come into force, international financial reporting standards must be adhered to. IFRS also encompasses accounting practices such as Purchase Price Allocation (IFRS 3), which is required when one company takes over or purchases the assets of another company. Market value for takeover purposes – sale of the business Should a business decide to merge with or acquire another business, it is usual as part of the due diligence process to have an independent valuation of the company’s assets carried out, which is usually incorporated into the heads of agreement. Due diligence upon handover uses the valuation report for quantities and models, and allows any discrepancy amendments to be taken into account in the final accounting.

Use technology against downtime

Mike Brooks, senior Business consultant at aspentech and forMer president and chief operating officer at Mtell, says an effective response can Be Made against unplanned downtiMe By adopting Machine learning applications

17

t

here is a significant need to carry out failure prevention using data-driven truths rather than guesstimates. The combination of mechanical and process-induced breakdowns costs up to 10% of a worldwide $1.4 trillion manufacturing market, per a 2012 report from the McKinsey Global Institute. While companies have spent millions trying to address this issue and ultimately avoid unplanned downtime, until now they have only been able to address wear- and age-based failures. Current techniques cannot detect problems early enough and lack insight into the reasons behind the seemingly random failures that cause over 80% of unplanned downtime. This is where using machine learning software to cast a wider net around machines can capture process-induced failures. To avoid unplanned downtime, companies must identify and respond effectively to early indicators of impending failures. Traditional maintenance practices do not predict failures caused by process excursions. That would require a unique technology approach combining machines and processes, particularly for assetintensive industries such as manufacturing and transportation. With the right technology in place, organisations can sense the patterns of looming degradation, with sufficient warning to prevent failures and change outcomes. Advanced machine learning software has already demonstrated incredible successes in the early identification of equipment failure. Such software is near-autonomous and learns behavioural patterns from the streams of digital data produced by sensors on and around machines and processes. Requiring minimal resources, this advanced technology automatically learns and adapts to new signal patterns when operating conditions change. Failure signatures learned on one machine inoculate that machine so that the same condition will not recur. Additionally, the learned signatures are transferred to similar machines to prevent them from being affected by the same degrading conditions. For example, a North American energy company was losing up to a million dollars in repairs and lost revenue from repeat breakdowns of electric submersible pumps. The advanced machine learning application learned the behaviour of 18 pumps and detected an early casing leak on one pump that caused an environmental incident. Applying the failure signature to the rest of the pumps provided an early warning, allowing early action to avoid a repeat incident, thus preventing a major problem. In another case, a leading railway freight firm operating across 23 states in the US used machine learning to address perennial locomotive engine failures costing millions in repairs, fines and lost revenue. The machine learning application operates in-line in real time, and was deployed on a very large fleet of locomotives examining lube oil data for extremely early indicators of engine failure. The application even detected a degradation signature while the engine passed a low-pressure test. Diverting the locomotive for immediate service “saved the company millions of dollars in costly downtime and fines. Companies can no longer rely solely on traditional maintenance practices but must also incorporate operational behaviours in deploying data-driven solutions. Today’s imperative means extracting additional value from existing assets and implementing an advanced machine learning programme to deliver fast improvements. With the right software solutions, predictive technologies will detect the conditions that limit asset effectiveness, while providing prescriptive guidance that assures firms remain profitable and improve margins.

he construction equipment sector in the GCC and the wider Middle East may be going through some of its slowest times in recent memory, but at Genie Towers, Sharbel Kordahi is not a worried man. The Middle East managing director of Terex Aerial Work Platforms has reason to be smug when you look at the recent performance of his company in the region: not only have Genie aerial work platforms (AWP) been selected by Dubai Parks and Resorts for their facilities maintenance fleet, but the company has also supplied a huge order of 300-plus machines to rental biggie Rapid Access, solely for Middle Eastern operations. Add to this other successes in the telescopic handler sector, such as a Genie telehandler being inducted into the Omani armed forces and others helping out in the new Suez Canal project, and you begin to see why Kordahi remains upbeat amidst a generally sluggish market. That mood, however, is tempered by a caution founded on the ground realities of the moment. Kordahi is quick to point out that while there are still reasons to feel positive, things are not as they were in the heyday not so long ago. “I have to admit that our business now is not what it was in 2014-15, but what it is now is also nothing to complain about,” he tells CMME in an exclusive interview. Like most other market players, the recent slide in Saudi Arabia has also affected Genie’s business, he explains. “In 2015, Saudi was the biggest growing market for power access. Starting from around the beginning of 2016, it has definitely taken a dip – and for obvious reasons. With the low oil price, funding for

19 Genie’s boom lifts have been well received in the region’s oil & gas, facilities management and rental sectors, with Rapid Access ordering 324 of them recently.

projects has come down, so a lot of power access rental companies and other users of our equipment have also been affected because the market has slowed down. So we haven’t seen so much come out of Saudi lately,” Kordahi says. “However, that doesn’t mean the region as a whole has completely taken a dip. The market has just changed; the dynamics have changed. So we see a lot of activities in Kuwait, for example. In the UAE, as well, all our customers and rental companies are busy. I wouldn’t say it’s back to steady growth overall in the region, but it is definitely a growth area for us. And even in Saudi, we are now starting to see a little bit of a recovery.” Cyclical business Kordahi feels the powered access sector in many parts of the GCC, with the possible exception of the UAE, is still in a developing stage. The business is cyclical, he adds, and ups and downs are normal. “Don’t let anyone fool you into believing that we always have heydays. We go into different cycles in our business. When the project pipeline gets affected, our market dips. But we do not see a massive dip, like in the heavy construction equipment sector. The projects that are still going on, instead of now buying machines, they go out for renting. This brings the rental companies into the picture and they continue to buy from us, so we go into a rental cycle. This means that if we go into a dip, it’s not so steep and our market is always first into recession and the first out of it as well.” The industrial and facilities management sectors also help to keep the segment healthy, he adds, and Genie is seeing a lot of its equipment going into these sectors. The oil & gas sector in the region is also another area which is a steady buyer of powered access equipment and provides a small measure of compensation when other sectors are slow. Speaking of Genie in particular, Kordahi says the company’s graph in the region has been moving consistently upwards for a long time now. “The real recession here was around 2008 and 2009,” he says. “We came out of that crisis in 2010 and started growing gradually from 2011. It has been a constant upswing all the way up to 2015, with fantastic growth. Then there was a mini dip, of course, but that’s purely coming out of the oil price and the crisis that happened in Saudi Arabia. We still enjoy a fantastic market share in the Middle East. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that we have the lion’s share of the region’s powered access market.” There is competition, of course, and

INTERVIEW AUGUS T 2017

“We sell on a Genie value proposition. Apart from performance, that includes finance, service and return on investment… Our equipment has a very high return on investment, so if you decide to sell them after a certain period of time you get very high ROI owing to high resale values” Genie is mindful of that. “We respect our competitors. We respect what they offer to the market. They also have customers that are loyal to them. So definitely, we do not discount any of them. Some such as Haulotte have an advantage in terms of pricing, while others like JLG have product ranges that we compete neck and neck with. But as a premium brand, we always manage to hold our own in the market.” The reason, Kordahi reveals, is Genie’s overall value proposition. “I think the differentiator in this part of the world is relationships,” he goes on. “We don’t go in just with the price, we sell on a Genie value proposition. Apart from performance, that includes finance, service and return on investment, which rental companies specifically look at. Our equipment has a very high return on investment, so if you decide to sell them after a certain period of time you get very high ROI owing to high resale values.” Genie’s traditionally high ROI has of course made it a popular choice for rental operators worldwide, but the GCC is a unique market where rental is not as popular as it is globally. “Globally, the powered access business is usually a direct business to rental companies. In the GCC, however, we have a split of

almost 50/50 between rental companies and dealers or end users.” Kordahi attributes this to weaker manufacturer coverage in the GCC, compared to other parts of the world. “All the manufacturers do not have the same level of coverage across the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi or other countries in the region, so we always depend on a third party to do our servicing. In that sense, you need a dealer; you need a third party to be in between you and the end user.” “The penetration of rental companies is growing here, but also don’t forget the GCC still has a lot of end users that buy equipment. A lot of big construction companies still like to own their own equipment. It’s not like in, say, the US, where you have manufacturers selling mainly directly to rental companies, who then bring the equipment over to a project they are hired for. We have strong end users here, and I don’t think that is going to change in the foreseeable future.” Recent success Speaking of rental brings us to Rapid Access, the rental company that is part of the global Lavendon-Loxam Group. Rapid Access recently bought 324 Genie boom lifts in the Middle East for its rental operations here.

High reach is features of Genie articulated booms such as the battery operated Z60, which goes up to 19m and was selected by Dubai Parks and Resorts for maintenance purposes.

Kordahi says: “Rapid Access is one of our longest-standing rental partners in the region. Back until 1999, they were also our only dealer in the region. That has changed over the years, but we are still very close to them. We also have a very strong relationship with their parent group in Europe, where they are one of our biggest customers. They are definitely one of our biggest customers here in the region, and we always work hand in hand with them to make sure that their business is successful, as we do with all our partners.” Aside from the huge Rapid Access order, the other key Genie news is its selection by Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR) for supply of maintenance equipment. Here is where the importance of a dealer comes in. “To be honest, the DPR order is a tribute to Al Mahroos, our dealer in the UAE. They went and established the relationship with DPR and took the risk of bringing in the machines and demonstrating them. Of course, it helped that the Genie Z60 is a very unique product. It is an articulated boom that goes up to 19m and is battery operated, so it gives off no fumes and can operate comfortably indoors as well as outdoors, besides being eco-friendly. The combination of Al Mahroos and the merits of the machine clinched that deal for us,” Kordahi reveals, adding that Al Mahroos has

21 recently been upgraded to a fully authorised Genie service provider under the Genie Service Solutions umbrella (see box). Despite such developments, challenges remain in the region. Lamenting the lack of financing options for buyers of powered access products, Kordahi says: “The banking and finance sector here still looks at our equipment with a lot of caution. Only one or two banks in any country are willing to finance AWPs, and the fact that we don’t have a registration card in the traffic department makes everybody a little nervous. Also, the cost of finance is still high.” Terex is trying to put remedial measures in place. “We have a Terex financial services person based out of our Dubai office who tries to build relationships with more and more banks and explain our products to them, stressing how safe they are. We also try to compensate for the lack of local availability with export finance from the EU, which is a system in some EU countries for extending financing options worldwide to customers of European manufacturers. The good thing about the EU export finance is that it’s cheap and they also consider big deals to the tune of several million dollars. The downside is that it has a long procedure, which could take up to three months until final approval.” The other challenge, which Kordahi also

views as an opportunity, is the influx of used equipment from other parts of the world. “This pushes down the rental price for new equipment, which limits the companies that are willing to invest in new equipment. It also brings a lot of bad equipment into the market, as no one knows if they have been serviced correctly or as required. The upside is that it increases the visibility of powered access equipment, which can increase the market size.” Another sticking point for Genie is the telehandler sector, where it would like to do better. The popular perception of telehandlers in the region as construction equipment rather than powered access products is an impediment. “Despite this, we have still found a measure of success with our telehandlers, for example with customers such as Al Laith Scaffolding, an events services supplier that uses our machines to erect stages and related facilities. In the final analysis, Kordahi says the Middle East remains a market for big boom sizes and Genie has introduced highcapacity booms that it expects to be game changers for the market. “We are definitely still a developing market and in a growth area in the Middle East. Genie’s aim now is to see how we can get closer to our customers and provide more services.”

Safety on top

UK-based over-the-necK safety prodUcts specialist, centUrion, tells CMME aboUt its new Middle east focUs as it aiMs for the region’s constrUction indUstry after establishing the doMinance of its helMets in the oil & gas sector

I

t is common knowledge that the Middle East’s construction sector doesn’t exactly rank at the top globally for its track record of safety. For a firsthand account of things, take a look at some of the numerous construction projects in almost any city in the region and you will find a few where flip-flops and uncovered heads can be spotted at job sites where you’d expect to find nothing but steel-toed boots and hard hats. While the region’s safety record has improved exponentially over the years through governments setting and enforcing stringent safety standards, and the large, established construction companies - both local and international bringing in their global best practices, more can still be done. In this scenario enters Centurion, one of the best-known names in the world for above-the-neck safety equipment. Not only does the UK-headquartered company have more than a century of tradition and expertise in the development and manufacturing of safety headgear and eye protection globally, but it also enjoys a significant presence in the oil & gas sector in the GCC region. And now, Centurion, along with its Dubai-based regional partner, SAS Hardware & Safety Equipment (SAS), has embarked on a major focus on the Middle East market. “Our association with Centurion in the region started more than seven years ago,” says Simon M. Jasser, managing director of SAS. “The reason we started the association was first of all because we’ve seen that the products are innovative. We found that there is something different than the other helmets in the market. There are many brands and many helmets, many types, but I think what made us look at Centurion was the style, the quality, the features. With their products, you feel that there is innovation and quality of a very high standard.”

Ahmed Kamel, regional sales manager for Middle East and Africa, at Centurion, adds: “We were not so active in the region as a company, but we are active through our distributor. Not all people know Centurion but now that is changing with the new vision of our CEO, Jeff Ward, whose plan is to invest more in the Middle East. “We already had a presence here with SAS, and we have our own production facility in Ajman now for around 15 years, from where we supply helmets throughout the GCC. Centurion produces many styles of helmets and while some styles are imported from the UK, two types are being made in Ajman. So, we are pioneers in a way, being the first to have a locally-made helmet in KSA. We’ve

already hosted a seminar last year, where we invited and interacted with prospective end-users,” he reveals. Centurion has for long been a top supplier to standard companies and has been especially active in the oil & gas sector, where it is a known and preferred name. “If you go to the petroleum facilities and oil ports of the region, you will find heavy use of Centurion products. There are more than 176 oil tankers here where everyone wears Centurion helmets. Then there are companies such as Emirates Global Aluminium and Emirates Steel, who use our helmets and other safety products,” says Louay Jasser, business development manager at SAS. Among other top users of Centurion products, he adds, are DP World, Al Bahari Shipping and ADNOC. And there are top construction sector customers as well, such as Al Rostamani Piegel, Jasser reveals. Product innovation is a Centurion tradition, he says, referring to the Nexus helmet range, which has been designed for working at heights. “If you are working at heights, you should wear a specific helmet.

25

“We’ve seen that the products are innovative. There are many brands and many helmets on the market, but what made us look at Centurion is their style, quality and features. With their products, you feel that there is innovation and quality of a very high standard”

There are very few such specific helmets on the market and Centurion is among the first to have a working-at-heights helmet, which is called ‘Nexus’,” says Jasser. “We are also the first to have integrated eye-wear into a helmet, so instead of having two products you have one, with eye-wear inside it. Apart from the fact that you are just carrying around one piece of gear, it also gives more strength to the product because it is integrated. In the construction business, this is a big plus, as you have our full construction helmet and full glasses in just one piece, and then you have our ear covers and other equipment. Centurion does not produce just one helmet; we have a full package for the construction sector. “We actually research our end-users and customers before we introduce a product. This is because we want our products to fit in the market. Centurion listens to its distributors in the GCC, asks questions and takes feedback; they listen to what the distributor and end-user have to say. This is what has made Centurion stand out with its products and what will keep us ahead as we focus on the Middle East,” Jasser signs off.

uro Auctions, Europe’s leading auctioneers of industrial, plant, construction equipment and agricultural machinery, has announced the addition of a permanent sale site in Dubai, putting Euro Auctions on four continents around the globe and adding another four sales per year to its calendar. Euro Actions has leased a 91,000m² (22 acre) site from the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA) that includes a purpose-built auction complex covering over 3,000m² with a 360-seat, fully-airconditioned, enclosed auction arena as well as ancillary buildings, workshops and infrastructure. Euro Auctions said it has all the necessary services and logistic licences in place for the new venture and will trade under the Euro Auctions brand. “As part of the continued global Euro Auctions brand expansion, the Middle East, and in particular the United Arab Emirates, was always the next country in which to establish a strong and stable operating base,” explains Jonnie Keys, Euro Auctions’ commercial manager. “We have many good relationships with buyers and sellers in the Middle East and Africa and this new auction location will enable us to create stronger relationships with our customers in this region and open the door to many new buyers and sellers.” Keys continues: “We have seen increased participation in our European and American auctions from the Middle East region over the past year and in particular in the last six months, and indeed have had numerous customers who have requested that we take a larger part in this region, which this facility will allow, in addition to growing our customer base.” The first Euro Auctions sale in Dubai is planned for September 13, this year, with four sales per year scheduled to follow. This will provide its customers more options and platforms to buy and sell equipment and assets when, where and how they like, says Keys. The expansion allows for total global reach and assets can be sold where the demand is greatest. This news follows Euro Auction’s acquisition of US heavy equipment auctioneer Yoder & Frey in December last year, which added three more auction sites and an additional six auctions per year. “We are delighted with the performance of the Yoder & Frey

brand to date and are looking forward to its growth in the future,” says Keys. In addition, Euro Auctions regularly holds the largest heavy equipment auction in Europe at its Leeds site, with 4500–5000 lots sold every six to seven weeks with hammer total typically over $39.3m. Established in 1998, Euro Auctions have permanent auction sites in the UK, Europe, Australasia, the US, and now the UAE, and are the market leader in the UK, Ireland and Europe, conducting over 60 major auctions every year. Euro Auctions also specialise in off-site sales and recently conducted the world’s largest one day auction of mobile cranes, selling 127 cranes with a hammer value of $42m. Euro Auctions also offer a secure online sales platform that is free to use and markets equipment globally to over 150,000 buyers in over 95 countries. Focal point Speaking about the upcoming auction in Dubai, Keys says there are several destination markets for the items featured in it and machinery is being consigned to the auction by hire companies, construction companies and machinery traders from right across the Middle East. “Dubai is a focal point and base for the majority of major construction and hire companies, which store and mobilise their plant fleets here for projects throughout the Middle East region,” he says. “We are finding that hire companies, construction companies and equipment traders are still holding fleets in preparation for changes in market conditions and in particular for the rebuilding of neighbouring countries such as Iraq and eventually Syria, and are now beginning to release equipment onto the market. Increases in oil prices will also drive economic investment in the Middle East.” Keys feels that a large amount of equipment will be released into the market in 2017 and 2018, with demand for more modern machines. Talking about what will drive demand in the coming months, he says: “Due to a large build-up of plant and equipment fleets and the changing pipeline

of large construction projects in the region, many companies are going through cost cutting measures and rebalancing their fleets to suit a larger number of smaller projects. This, coupled with the positive signals from the mining industry in Australia, is fuelling demand for larger plant and equipment. We feel that from 2017 and 2018 onwards there will be a strong global demand for construction equipment. With this continuing rise, many of the assets available will be exported out of Dubai.” Discussing the global market situation more closely, he adds that North America and Europe are experiencing high demand and prices, while there is a quick rebound in Australia and in the Far East. The demand for quality construction assets will remain high and Euro Auctions is capable of providing its customers access to global buyers and sellers.

According to Euro Auctions, a swathe of used stock will be on the market by 2019, as more operators look to replace aging equipment with new ones as the economy recovers.

“Euro Auctions is a truly global company with auction sites and buyers from right across the world. Our experience and large database of international buyers and sellers provides an opportunity for buyers from across the world to access equipment based in the Middle East and therefore provides sellers at our Dubai auction with a worldwide audience of eager buyers who are looking for particular pieces of equipment. We are experiencing increasing levels of transactions conducted online with our online auction platform providing an opportunity to easily buy equipment at any of our auction sites. Machinery and equipment are truly global commodities and are traded as such,” Keys explains. Speaking about the expected trends and preferences of buyers at the auction, he adds: “Dubai was once considered the crane capital of the world and, with an expected pipeline of projects coming on stream, cranes are once again in demand in Dubai and across the Middle East. With regard to brand preference, Caterpillar machinery is always sought after (in the region) but the likes of Komatsu, Liebherr, Hyundai and JCB are also in strong demand, with favourable reliability, operating costs, design innovation and availability.” In fact, JCB telehandlers will form a key part of the upcoming Dubai auction, Keys points out, along with such items as unused

“We have seen increased participation in our European and American auctions from the Middle East region over the past year… numerous customers have requested that we take a larger part in this region, which this facility will allow, in addition to growing our customer base” Mercedes 2040 trucks. But with other global heavyweights in the auction business, such as Ritchie Bros., already well entrenched in the region and holding auctions of years now, if not decades, how does a late entrant such as Euro Auctions assess its prospects in the Middle East, which is definitely a region that is not in its hey days at the moment? Is this the opportune moment to enter here and what makes Keys so upbeat about his company’s future in the region? Competition and opportunities “Euro Auctions’ arrival in Dubai provides much needed competition in the region. Our presence is good for the both buyers and sellers and gives them many more opportunities to access and sell good quality equipment. Our presence also brings a large new international audience to the region,” Keys explains. Euro Auctions provide many extra services, he adds - such as preparing equipment for auctions with facilities like jet washing and repair and refurbishment, to name a few to get the best price for it. The company also provides assistance with loading and

Demand for quality secondhand equipment remains high, with telehandlers, excavators and other kit from Caterpillar, JCB, etc., trading at a premium.

unloading, full worldwide logistics support, asset valuation and marketing of equipment to a global audience. And most of all, “a friendly service based on treating buyers and sellers equally with high levels of customer service”, Keys emphasises. Giving an overview of the entire auction process of a Euro Auctions event from start to finish, he explains: “Once a consigner has completed and signed their contract, we start to arrange transportation to the auction site. Once received at site, the equipment is booked in and any refurbishment requested is completed. We then take detailed photographs and gather equipment information and list the equipment on our website – euroauctions. com. Before the auction there will be an extensive marketing campaign to promote the auction and the equipment. “The auction will be both onsite and online through our free auction platform. Bidders can watch and listen to the auction in real time and on average 40% of our sales are completed through the internet. Our auctions are unreserved so everything goes to the highest bidder. Once the equipment is purchased, the buyer typically goes

through a very efficient post-sale process of payment, completion of necessary documents and arranging any logistics necessary. We try to keep everything as simple and efficient as possible.” As part of Euro Auctions’ plan for continued global of its brand, the company is always looking out for new territories and markets to venture into. The Middle East, with the GCC region in particular, was always the obvious destination to expand into, Keys says. And the UAE, which is the hub of trade, logistics and even construction in the region, was the logical choice in which to establish a strong and stable operating base. Naturally, Dubai, being the focal point of the entire region’s trade and commerce, was chosen for that base “Euro Auctions has good relationships with consignors and buyers in the Middle East and Africa, and this new auction location will enable us to create a stronger relationship with our customers in this region. We have seen increased participation in our European and American auctions from the Middle East region over the past year and this facility will allow us to grow our customer base in this region,” Keys signs off.

Terex updaTes demag line wiTh new allTerrain cranes Why get it? Speed of operation with automatic counterweight rigging SyStem, low maintenance and one-perSon operation Terex Cranes has introduced the three-axle AC 55-3 and AC 60-3 to its Demag line of all-terrain cranes. The three-axle 55t and 60t capacity models feature the latest industry advancements to increase productivity and reduce operating costs. The cranes have an automated counterweight rigging system for easy and fast set-up, a one-engine concept that minimises operational and maintenance costs, and the IC-1 Plus control system, which provides the crane’s maximum allowable lifting capacity, based on the slewing angle, for every crane configuration. These innovations help make the Demag three-axle crane a one-person operation. Demag AC 55-3 and AC 60-3 allterrain cranes have a 50m single-cylinder telescoping main boom, the longest of any three-axle all-terrain crane. Also, the AC 60-3 model can be fitted with a 16m extension, making it the longest system in its class, according to Terex. The main boom on both cranes can be lowered to five degrees below horizontal to avoid working at heights, for easy and fast set-up. The cranes’ outriggers can be positioned independently from each other for efficient

positioning, taking advantage of the IC-1 Plus system’s ability to calculate the maximum allowable lifting capacity based on the crane’s configuration. Also, the optional remote control gives the operator the ability to safely and easily rig and operate the crane remotely from the ground. At only 2.55m wide, the same as a standard truck, and the ability to stay within 12t axle weight restrictions, Demag three-axle cranes provide fast and efficient transportation between job-sites. The Demag AC 55-3 crane can also be configured to meet 10t axle weight restrictions when necessary. The flexibility of these two cranes continues when arriving at the job-site, with their compactness aiding manoeuvrability to help the operator quickly position the crane. The three-sheave VarioHook system and powerful hoist, with 60.2kN of line pull, contribute to help shorten rigging time, reduce the weight of equipment transported and save time on the job. There is also an optional all-wheel drive feature for demanding job-site environments. Terex says the Demag AC 55-3 and AC 60-3 all-terrain cranes will perform well in a wide range of applications including general lifting, equipment loading and unloading, and inside building lifts, as well as in performing auxiliary crane work. BoBcaT’s new Zero Tail swing excavaTor Why get it? Zero tail Swing feature enableS uSe in confined and compact SpaceS; faSt hydraulic performance and operator comfort Among Bobcat’s new compact excavator models this year is the 1.7t E17Z Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) canopy model, completing the company’s 1-2t range of compact excavators. The E17Z provides several useful features, from ZTS and a roomy, comfortable operator area to ease of transport thanks to a shipping weight close to 1.6t. It also impresses with its digging forces and working range, the smoothness of the workgroup functions, fast hydraulic performance in terms of low cycle times, and its reliability, durability and easy service access. In the new E17Z, the ZTS functionality uses Bobcat’s Zero House Swing (ZHS) design, in which the front upper structure is also fully protected by ensuring the front corners

are kept within the swing circle when the tracks are in the fully expanded position. As a result, the ZHS functionality on the E17Z provides the peace of mind of 320 degrees of free rotation when working close to walls and other obstructions, without sacrificing operator comfort or performance. The operator environment on the E17Z, in combination with excellent visibility, provides comfort and safety. Bobcat says the E17Z provides optimal ergonomics for operators of all sizes with easy access to the pedals and controls. The large canopy and entry/ exit space provide the driver with plenty of room to get into and out of the seat, further helped by the left-hand control console lifting completely out of the way. In addition, when not in use the pedals can be folded away to increase room for the operator’s feet. The E17Z has a standard operating weight of 1.7t and a maximum digging depth of 2,249mm. Features such as a retractable undercarriage,

upper-structure tie-down points and advanced diagnostics are available as standard. The E17Z incorporates the architecture of the hydraulic system on the larger Bobcat E20 model with a combination of variable piston pumps and a gear pump. On the control panel, all vital information, such as auto engine shut-down, auto glow plugs countdown, auto cab lights switch-off, audible alarm (in case of malfunction) and RPM meter, is easily accessible. The E17Z also offers keyless ignition and a battery kill switch.

himoinsa expands FpT engine-powered genseT range To 600kva Why get it? fpt engine performance and reliability, lower fuel conSumption and longer Service intervalS Spanish portable power giant Himoinsa has expanded its range of generators with FPT engines to include four new sets with outputs of up to 600kVA. FPT engines are manufactured by Turin, Italy-based Fiat Power Train Industrial, which is among the leading engine producers in the world and a part of the Italian giant CNH Industrial Group. Among other names, FPT engines are also used in machinery made by global giant Case Construction Equipment. The four new generators have 17% lower specific consumption than other generators with the same power range, and a service interval that is 200 hours longer, according to Himoinsa. The Murcia, Spain-headquartered manufacturer said it is adding the four new 600kVA models to its series of generator sets with FPT engines to operate in any market. These new units offer significant competitive advantages over other generators of equal power, primarily in terms of their lower fuel consumption and longer service intervals. For the 50Hz market, the HFW-600

T5 and its rental version, the HRFW-600 T5, supply 600kVA in PRP and 659kVA in stand-by. For 60Hz markets, the series includes the HFW-550 T6 and HRFW550 T6 models, with power of 625kVA in PRP and 690kVA in stand-by. The four models incorporate the new CR16TE1W engine from FPT. Their specific consumption is 191g/kWh, which translates to 115l/h at 100% power, up to 17% lower than other generator sets of similar power, says the manufacturer. Another attractive feature, especially important for machinery rental companies, is the service intervals, which are up to 200 hours longer than other generators. In addition, with an oil tank of just 32l, they can operate continuously for 600 hours without needing an oil change. In terms of size and portability, the engine is more compact and allows a smaller canopy to be used, which is easier and less costly to transport, thus fulfilling another requirement of the rental sector. With this addition, Himoinsa’s HFW series now ranges from 30kVA to 600kVA. Following an update of FPT’s C13TE7 engine, the company recently changed the name of the HFW-490 T5 and the HRFW-490 T5. Both generators now offer increased power of 501kVA in PRP, instead of 489kVA. From now on they’ll be called the HFW500 and the HRFW-500, says Himoinsa. SPECIFICATIONS

new quick coupler For BoBcaT excavaTors Why get it? allowS operator to change nonhydraulic attachmentS from Seat, low maintenance and high breakout force Bobcat has extended its excavator quick coupler offering with the launch of a new hydraulic pin grabber coupler for attachments used on the seven Bobcat compact excavators from the E25 up to the E55 models. The new coupler is available both as a factory installed option and as an after-market product for use with all the pin-on fitting attachments for the E25 to E55 excavators. The new quick coupler complements the existing full range of mechanical couplers from Bobcat. Bobcat excavators equipped with the factory-installed hydraulic coupler are now supplied as tailor-made systems. The factory-installed option is designed not to compromise machine efficiency, robustness and overall performance. There is a wide variable pin centre, to pick up multiple pin-on attachments. A robust yet compact design ensures maximum breakout force, and the system is essentially maintenance-free with few components, for peace of mind. Operators can change non-hydraulic attachments without leaving their seat. This means more comfort as well as higher productivity, because the attachments can be changed faster. The procedure is quick and safe. The operator simply activates two switches in the correct sequence, then moves the bucket joystick.

ime was when the skeletal remains of half-finished skyscrapers lying abandoned was a common sight that dotted the major cities in the region. Following the boom-fuelled construction spree of the late noughties, the post-bust scenario was a stark contrast that shook the region’s construction sector. A few years later, when there was hope that the momentum would start to return, the region was again stymied by the crash of oil prices and the Saudi economy – the region’s largest – hitting rough weather. The construction equipment sector saw manufacturers report some of their worst figures last year post the global economic crises of almost a decade ago. Yet, in a show of the resilience of the region, all these woes are now things of the past. In the past few months, projects have gradually started to swing back into motion and the raw innards of some incomplete, derelict construction sites, left ignored for almost a decade, are starting to fill out as activity resumes in the sector. Cities such as Dubai are resdiscovering their appetite to build tall – as seen in the taller-than-Burj Khalifa tower the city announced last

As the batching plants gradually start whirring and the transit mixers once again start becoming the ubiquitous sights on the region’s roads that they were once upon a time, the truck-mounted concrete pump is also regaining its place as one of the most important pieces of kit in the region. And this time, reaching new heights seems to be the name of the game. For concrete equipment specialist, Cifa, that’s no problem. The Italian manufacturer is well known for its range of long-boom pump trucks, says Wajih Eit, the company’s head of area for the Middle East and North Africa. Cifa has a three-pronged range of pump trucks - Carbotech, Steeltech and Classic - he tells CMME, the first of which has models that hold the record for the longest booms in the world. “Our Carbotech series of truck pumps are made with a section of their booms fashioned out of carbon fibre, a technology that Cifa has developed and patented. 41 Carbotech system we can mount pumps with higher booms on trucks that are lighter than they would otherwise be, enabling them to meet axle weight restrictions on the roads and reach more job sites.” As an example of the capabilities the Carbotech system brings to Cifa, he reveals that the biggest pump that Cifa can mount on an 8X4 truck today has a a 60m carbon fibre boom. “Our competitors can only mount a maximum of around a 55m boom on the same kind of truck,” Eit point out. “The Carbotech line is the most advanced one for us now and is doing great in Europe. It is surely the future for the Middle East. We’ve supplied a 60m Carbotech in KSA, and also in Algeria. We will soon supply a third unit in Qatar and we’re also negotiating for other units in the UAE and other countries.” Thanks to this technology, Cifa today has the biggest pumps ever to be completely mounted on trucks – “like our 80m and 100m”, says Eit. “The 100m pump is already working in the Chinese market. We cannot use it yet in the ME or Europe because of the axle weight regulations on the roads here. The biggest that can work in this region is the 80m, as per the current regulations. We are in negotiations for several of these in the region, which will enter this market in the next two years. “In the Carbotech, we have no competitors

at the moment, and that’s because this technomogy was invented by Cifa and we have the patent for it, which gives us exclusive production rights for 10 years. There are still six more years to run on that patent and for that time we will be the only company offering this technology.” Moving on to the Steeltech, Eit says that it is the company’s standard normal pump in the market. “Like the Carbotech, it is 100% made in Italy. We launched several new products in this range recently, such as the 42m and 55m, with which we are doing great numbers in the region today, thanks to the tech we are putting inside – such as the open circuit of the pumping unit, the high performance of the fast-moving parts inside it, plus the low cost of maintenance. “The Classic is the new series we launched a year ago for some selected markets, but from this year on we will be bringing it to the Middle East as well. It is designed by Cifa in our design centre in Italy and has Cifa technology, but it is made in China in our dedicated factory there. So it has great performance and all the characteristics of our brand, but it competes on a value proposition against the Chinese and Korean manufacturers on the market.” Meanwhile, at another European

manufacturer, Leibherr, the good times are beginning to roll in. Ali Kassem, regional sales manager, Concrete Equipment Division Middle East, tells CMME that 2016 was a year that began on a tough note but ended well – a sentiment that has carried on to this year, too. New business “Pumps is a new business for Leibherr,” he says. “We came into this category when Liebherr acquired German pump specialist Waitzinger some five years ago. We have only sold pumps in Saudi Arabia in the GCC in the past through Leibherr’s KSA arm, but things are looking better for the rest of the region now with more deliveries planned for the coming months in the UAE,” Kassem says. Like Cifa, Liebherr, also has its own patented technology in its pumps, namely the XXT outrigger system, which reduces the four pivot points for the four outriggers to only two with a front outrigger that collapses into the rear one. This greatly improves stability and the ability to operate in confined spaces, including the ability to pump over the head of the truck cab, says Leibherr (see box). “Our range consists of the 37, 43, 47 and 50m models, all XXT. Of these, the 43m is due for delivery in the UAE later this year,” Kassem says.

Changing the game somewhat is Laticrete, which manufactures the Supercap - a wholly enclosed pump truck used for achieving precision concrete levelling. Sujit Singh, the company’s managing director for the region, says: “With the traditional method of pouring concrete, it is difficult to get the most precise levelling in the final finished stage. For example, if you want to do a vinyl flooring then you need another toping on top of the concrete because the level variation is so high that you cannot go directly with your vinyl or other smooth, seamless flooring over that.” The Supercap uses a self-levelling material that goes on top of the concrete to provide a super smooth surface, he adds. The technology was developed by Laticrete in the US, and its main feature is that the pump truck has an on-board generator, so its doesn’t need any external power source. The mixing is also done inside the truck, using an internal water system, which eliminates the spread of hazardous silica dust. “And our pump truck is also capable of pumping up to 50 floors, to provide a super-flat finish over the concrete,” Singh says. “Apart from safety, the benefits include big savings in labour costs and time, as the Supercap can cover 6,000sqm in eight hours with only four people working it, whereas

conventionally, to level the same area in the same time manually, you would require around 50 people,” Singh adds. As the major manufacturers keep new models rolling in, they are also paying attention to the service side of things. At Cifa, Eit says the manufacturer’s dealer footprint covers 90% of the Middle East region, and will be extended to the remaining region this year. “Also, we have a branch in Jebel Ali, Dubai, which we have made into our support hub with a huge stock of spare parts that we can deliver to our dealers throughout the region in less than 24 hours. We also have service technicians who can support our dealers, helping them to support the end-user better. “With a focus on the region, we will also participate in the Big 5 in Dubai next year, with a dedicated Cifa stand for concrete products, where we will present our whole dealer network in the region to the market.” Liebherr, on the other hand, has its Saudi operations to fall back on as a back-up for pump spare parts, while it also stocks parts at its Jebel Ali facility. “We have three service engineers in our Jebel Ali office,” says Kassem. “They are always flying around the GCC and their new responsibility includes looking after our pumps. Going ahead, we have plans of deploying technicians locally in every market in the region that we sell our pumps in.”

OscillatiOn refined

With more than 35 years of experience making oscillation rollers, the concept’s pioneer, hamm, explains the principles behind them and extolls their virtues in modern road construction

G

erman compaction specialist Hamm, 35 years ago, became the first road roller manufacturer to offer an oscillation drum for tandem rollers. The Tirschenreuth, Germany-based company, part of the Wirtgen Group, is one of the best-known makers of rollers today and a major player in the oscillation segment. Ever since Hamm pioneered oscillation technology for tandem roller drums, it has been an integral part of its product programme. In the past five years alone, the compaction technology specialist has delivered more than 3,000 machines with this particular technology. Today, one in five of the tandem rollers leaving the Tirschenreuth factory is equipped with an oscillation drum. With the advantage of an early start in oscillation, which has given it more time to research, develop and improve the technology, Hamm now has by far the widest offering of oscillation rollers in the world, with more than 35 models in its range – one for each year since its introduction, in a happy coincidence. In addition, only Hamm builds oscillation tandem rollers in the compact class, as well as compactors for earthwork with oscillation compaction capability. Moreover, the Hamm programme includes oscillation rollers for every market, including the Middle East, where its oscillation roller models include the 3412 VIO, 3412 HT VIO, 3414 VIO and 3414 HT VIO. In the 1980s, Hamm undertook pioneering work in the development of oscillation compaction and was for a long time the only supplier in the market. The technology quickly became popular as word spread among customers of its benefits. Soon, oscillation proved itself and become successfully established in the market, and as a result, most roller manufacturers now offer this type of roller as well. With 35 years having elapsed since Hamm sprang the oscillation roller on the road construction sector, the manufacturer says the

reason for the success of the techonology is simple: oscillation rollers make for fast, cost-effective and high-quality dynamic compaction. In particular, tandem rollers with one oscillation drum and one vibrating drum achieve at least the same degree of compaction as double vibrating drum rollers, with fewer passes. Added to this is the low vibration emission that has made dynamic compaction on bridges, thin layers and in sensitive areas, such as city centres, rail tracks and industrial plants, possible for the first time. In short, says Hamm, the scope of applications is enormous. According to Hamm, another bonus is that oscillation rollers can begin dynamic compaction directly behind the paver and then perform the main compaction. Even with lower asphalt temperatures at the end of compaction, oscillation ensures increased compaction without crushing the aggregate. Overall, when using oscillation rollers, the time available for compaction is significantly greater than with vibratory rollers. Wide range Hamm’s range of oscillation rollers encompasses tandems for asphalt compaction, ranging from 2.5t to 15t. When it comes to the company’s pivotsteered rollers, in 2016 around 40% of all its DV+ series rollers, a popular choice for demanding road-building projects, were delivered with oscillation drums. Hamm

is also the world’s only manufacturer to provide oscillation rollers in the 2.54.5t compact class, which also enjoy high demand. For customers looking for compaction solutions with the facility to choose between oscillation and vibration, Hamm is the only global manufacturer with the answer, in the form of its VIO drums. Oscillation rollers can be used to compact all earthwork and road-building layers. They are particularly suitable, says Hamm, for earthwork where re-loosening of the upper layers has to be effectively prevented, such as in garden and landscaping work. Another important application is the compaction of soils in vibration-sensitive areas, for example above gas, water and other pipework. In asphalt construction, base courses, binder courses and surface courses can be reliably compacted with oscillation rollers. Hamm adds that they perform especially well in the compaction of generally hard-to-compact asphalts such as SMA or polymer-modified material mixes. This is because, in contrast to vibration compaction, the effective direction of the vibrations during oscillation promotes the desired redistribution of long-chain binding agents. Other applications include work on thin layers, such as surface courses and thin overlays, in vibration-sensitive areas like

47 bridges, confined urban spaces, buildings or parking decks; and also wherever the mix cools quickly, such as in thin layers, windy or cold environments. Oscillation rollers also shine in joint compaction, where the hot asphalt is to be compacted without damaging the adjoining cold asphalt. Hamm says that in the three-plus decades during which it has provided oscillation rollers to the market, it has become common knowledge among construction authorities and private customers alike that dynamic compaction with oscillation has many intrinsic benefits and increases road construction quality. Oscillation has also proved its worth on large projects, the manufacturer says, in which the rapid increase in compaction makes for an optimised process with fewer passes. Citing projects around the globe, such as the construction of a Formula 1 racetrack in Baku where intermediate and heavy rollers were used, and another project involving remedial work in the centre of Vienna on which compact rollers with oscillation were used, Hamm says it is hardly surprising that the use of oscillation rollers is increasingly being specified for compaction when quality and longevity are paramount.
