As always, The Big 5 in Dubai is a great chance to take the pulse of the construction machinery industry, as dealers and OEMs reflect on the year almost over and gear up for the next one. The mood this year was generally good: most participants at the show talked to by CMME were reporting strong results in 2015, noting that contractors have been in a mood to invest in new plant and machinery. Nevertheless, there are clearly storm clouds on the horizon, as oil prices remain depressed, with rumours and even concrete evidence of a slowdown in some areas of the construction industry. Against this backdrop, and driven by higher labour costs as well as the prospect of increases in diesel prices over the coming years, contractors are continuing to embrace new equipment that can bring improved efficiency and productivity to their job-site. There’s nowhere better than a trade fair to be impressed by the range of machines and new developments by manufacturers, who are looking to boost contractor profitability – if only they will invest in a new machine.
Sales performances by kit sellers in 2015 suggest that many contractors are listening. Any slowdown in the construction in sector in 2016 will certainly put pressure on contractors and margins, but even then the same rules will apply: being able to get a job done more quickly, at a cheaper cost, and of course with consistent and high quality work, will keep firms ahead of the competition. The only question then is which manufacturer and dealer combination is offering the package of machine productivity and ongoing support that best fits your business. Happy searching.

New rules for cranes after Mecca collapse Saudi authorities have announced new regulations for operating tower cranes after the deadly collapse that killed over 100 people at Mecca’s Grand Mosquein September, local media reported. Construction firms using tower cranes must get ground soil tested from a specialised laboratory before operating the heavy machinery, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said in a statement. The test should cover the effect of the crane’s movement on soil as well as the aerodynamic effect at times of strong winds. The regulatory body has urged contractors to take protective measures before operating tower cranes, such
as checking electric cables attached to the crane and making sure no partial damage has occurred during operation. The operating area should be visible, leaving enough space for the movement of the crane while loading and unloading heavy construction material. Moreover, contractors should also check wind speed and only operate cranes when wind speeds are safe, the CDD said. “If inspectors find anything wrong during tests, they should stop the crane’s operation completely for maintenance works. Operators should inform maintenance engineers if they hear any unusual or strange sound from the equipment.”

rIyADH PLAnS $5.6Bn DEvELOPMEnT The High Commission of Development of Arriyadh has given the green light to $5.6bn worth of investment projects, including commercial and recreational parks, major residential units, hotels and health facilities.
According to the report by Aljazira Capital, demand is forecast to maintain modest growth in the short term, due to recovery in the local market after last year’s shortage of construction labourers. Furthermore, the report indicates that the Saudi government will continue spending on key infrastructure ventures and keep construction activity on track. The
construction sector is also expected to gain additional momentum as more effort is made to build residential units and address the Kingdom’s deep-seated housing problem. Meanwhile, profit margins are likely to go down mainly because of higher clinker inventory, which triggered heavy competition between producers for market share.

First job for 31000 outside S. Korea South Korean lifting company Chunjo Construction used its Manitowoc 31000 on a recent project in Vietnam, marking the first time the company has transported the crane outside of South Korea. Chunjo transported the 2,300t crawler crane to help construct a petrochemical refinery in Thanh Hoa Province. A consortium of Vietnamese and Japanese companies oversaw the plant’s construction, during which the crane erected a variety of heavy process equipment. Though the 31000 is a large crane, Chunjo sent it to Vietnam because it is the easiest in its
class to transport. The crane’s Variable Position Counterweight (VPC) enables it to use far less counterweight than cranes offering similar capacities. Jong Seoung Park, general manager of Manitowoc Cranes in Korea, said that customers in Asia are realising the benefits of the 31000 and its VPC. “Though it is a challenge to transport such a large crane to another country, customers still wish to have the 31000 on their job-sites because it saves so much money during shipping, ground preparation and erection,” he said. “Also, the crane is gaining a reputation for excellent performance.”

Job postings in Saudi Arabia’s construction sector fell by almost a fifth in the year to October, amid a wider slowdown in Middle East recruitment growth. Engineering, construction and real estate employers advertised 18% fewer Saudi-based jobs last month compared to a year ago, making it the country’s worst-performing sector, according to Monster.com’s employment index. Saudi’s recruitment market was the weakest of the
seven countries tracked, with a 2% decline in online job listings. Kuwait, Egypt and the UAE were the strongest markets, rising 23%, 19% and 18% respectively. The index year-on-year growth rate slowed from 24% in September 2015 to 14% in October. The construction sector was among the worst performing across the region as a whole, registering a growth in Monster.com job listings of just 4% – much lower than the index average.

A PAlfinger PK 200002 l SH Sometimes the most difficult part of an installation job isn’t even the job itself, but carrying it out without disrupting traffic. In Frankfurt, Germany, two Palfinger cranes and one access platform were used to replace 450kg of glass panelling inside the atrium of the ‘Triangle’, a prominent skyscraper in the banking district. Used were a PK 200002 L SH, a PK 78002 SH and the WT 530 access platform. The triangular complex consists of two building sections with a glass and steel atrium roof that spans the freely accessible courtyard. The only twin panoramic lift in the world is installed in the courtyard between the buildings. A connection bridge at fifth-floor level joins the two building sections. An underground car park is on two basement levels beneath the building complex. The atrium roof is covered with huge glass panes measuring 3.6 x 2.4m. The first time one of the panes was broken, all traffic on both lanes in front of the ‘Main Triangle’ had to be diverted for a whole week in order for the pane to be replaced. There was an absolute desire to avoid a similar situation when replacing the pane this time around, and local operator Meister used its new Palfinger PK 200002 L SH to produce a solution. The work was carried out from inside the atrium itself. The truck with assembly crane drove over heavy steel plates into the interior of the building, in order to keep the point loads as low as possible, as the basement car park is only one floor below. After supporting and extending the crane, a 3D multi-axis glass manipulator developed by Meister was attached to the tip of the crane. Another Palfinger crane, a PK 78002 SH, lifted the replacement pane of glass. At the same time, the façade-climbers began to loosen the old pane on the roof. The PK 200002 L SH assembly crane was extended and reached the defective pane at a height of 38m. The vacuum device fitted to the tip of the crane attached itself to the surface of the glass and the hydraulic thrust arms lifted the defective glass by 20cm. A WT 530 access platform was used in parallel in order that the crane driver could control the crane precisely at a height of 38m. After setting down the defective 450kg pane, the new pane of glass was lifted from the ground and inserted using the same method.

DEALER LAUNCH DECEMBER 201 5
Jaidah adds pump-maker everdigm
Jaidah heavy equipment has expanded its product range with concrete pumps and equipment to satisfy demand during qatar’s construction boom
atari construction machinery dealer Jaidah Heavy Equipment, a subsidiary of well-known conglomerate Jaidah Group, has announced that it will be the exclusive dealer for South Korean concrete pump builder Everdigm. The brand adds another segment to Jaidah’s large selection of construction equipment brands. Everdigm was founded in South Korea in 1991, originally part of Daewoo and then independent since 2001. Its range includes truck-mounted concrete pumps with booms from 21-63m, truck-mounted line pumps, trailer pumps and placing boom systems. “Jaidah Group has a history of longstanding relationships with major international manufacturers, making us perfectly suited for satisfying the high demand for equipment related to Qatar’s construction boom, driven by Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Ayman Ahmed, managing director of Jaidah Equipment, at a launch event at Regency Halls announcing the new dealership. “Our dealership agreement with Everdigm will reap rich returns for both parties and enhance our efforts to facilitate further growth in Qatar’s construction industry.” Attendees from Everdigm included Patrick Cheong, managing director of the company’s overseas business division, and Paul Go, general manager of overseas business concrete pumps. “Jaidah has emerged as Qatar’s leading provider of construction equipment and industrial products, making the Group a perfect fit for us,” said Cheong. “We are delighted with this new dealership, and we are looking forward to having a positive impact on Qatar’s growth by delivering our high-quality products.”
The dealership agreement, which both companies dub a “long-term strategic partnership”, leverages the complementary strengths of both companies to provide high-quality concrete pumps in Qatar. Shown at the launch event was a 42CX-5 truck-mounted concrete pump equipped with a five-piece boom, mounted on a four-axle chassis. The boom, which is a ZR folding type, has a vertical reach of 42m, horizontal reach of 36.3m and depth reach of 27.7m. Outrigger spread is 8m on the front and 8.6m on the rear swing-out outriggers. Delivery pipe diameter is 125mm. “At Jaidah Heavy Equipment, we see hard work and determination as key factors for achieving excellence,” said Ahmed. “Our division offers complete post-sales solutions for our customers’ convenience, including field service, after-sales maintenance contracts and an excellent availability of parts.” Jaidah’s full product range includes heavy machinery and forklifts from Komatsu, cranes from Link-belt, UD Trucks, Palfinger cranes, Altec cranes, compressed air and lighting solutions from Dossan Infracore (Ingersoll Rand), cleaning solutions from Tennant, Isuzu light and medium trucks, road machines from Sakai and material handling equipment from Still.

015 has been a good year for Wacker Neuson. Group revenue in the first nine months grew 8.7% to a record $1.1bn, and despite a downturn in key markets in the third quarter, the company is still expecting to achieve record revenue levels this year. In September, the brand released a number of new machine models in the Middle East, including wheel dumpers, compact excavators, internal vibrators and rollers. This comes as the market is taking a long hard look at the options and functionality around compact equipment. Earlier this year, Wacker Neuson was profiled in a CMME feature entitled ‘Why Small is Beautiful’ about the rise of compact machinery used by contractors, especially in the UAE. It became one of the most widely read features on the website, an indication of the market’s interest in machines such as mini-excavators. Leading the brand’s presence in the region is Manhal Al-Chalabi, regional manager for Middle East & North Africa. Asked about the brand’s position in the market, Al Chalabi points to the brand slogan: “Wacker Neuson – all it takes”. Along with product performance and service, the company offers customers reliable solutions, he says. Reliability is at the core of the brand. “If you ask customers about our products, reliability is the first thing they will tell you.” Of course, an OEM brand can only be as strong as its dealers. Al-Chalabi says the company has invested heavily in its dealer network, including regular training for service staff in Germany, and the network is also well equipped with repair tools and spare parts. “This approach has paid off. Service is the backbone of the sales. If you don’t have good service, you can’t sell.” Those efforts have produced results. Global sales success has been matched in the Middle East, says Al-Chalabi, with strong sales in almost all the machinery segments offered. The top markets are Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with major infrastructure developments including metro work, airports in Saudi Arabia and ring roads in Qatar, followed by the UAE and the rest. Top-selling product segments were internal vibrators, plate compactors, light towers and excavators. Whether Wacker Neuson – or any other OEM brand, for that matter – will be able to report strong sales in the Middle East at the end of next year remains to be seen, with suggestions that spending on construction will drop due to the lower oil revenues. “We are looking at 2016 with mixed feelings. We hear and see good news on one side, but then we hear and
20
HEAVY HITTERS DECEMBER 201 5
see and even feel some slowdown here and there. We will do our best for 2016, and how it comes we don’t yet know.” Still, Al-Chalabi says he doesn’t put stock in rumours and that longer term, the prospects for growth in the GCC are good. Another impact of low oil prices has been the deregulation of fuel subsidies for petrol and diesel in the UAE this year, with other markets such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain expected to follow suit. Higher diesel prices will see contractors looking at fuel efficiency, helping Wacker Neuson, since the company has long focused on this, given the far higher prices of diesel in markets such as Europe. “All our products are fuel-efficient; we are ahead of the competition because we have done a lot of research and development in this field. For example, our engines are more fuel-effective, that’s one thing, but we have used bigger engines for our machines, which means they can work at a lower RPM and therefore consume less fuel.” Using a larger engine pushes up acquisition costs, says Al-Chalabi. Once fuel efficiency is a bigger driver of ROI, that will make their equipment more cost-effective. “We’re happy about [deregulation], because it will give us a better chance to sell, and sell more. This won’t happen overnight, but customers who already look at fuel efficiency will now take this more into consideration, and the big companies will follow too.” Another shift taking place in the Gulf is contractors looking for ways of working more productively to reduce total manpower on their sites as worker wages rise, while in some markets companies are finding it difficult to obtain visas for foreign workers and recruit skilled workers. “Customers are looking for more productive machines, lower operating costs and of course for safety.” Enquiries for mini-excavators are up, which Al-Chalabi ascribes to higher labour costs. “This machine can replace labour, and can work quicker and more efficiently.” Mini-loaders are another product segment seeing increased interest. “Before, a customer would take a big excavator for a small job. Now, because of fuel efficiency, he’ll think twice, and maybe he’ll think that a miniexcavator is a better solution.” For some jobs, mini-excavators can also be used in the place of backhoe loaders, he says. “A backhoe loader is a machine that is very heavy and has a very high fuel consumption.” The Wacker Neuson range includes its vertical digging system (VDS), which allows the machine to dig a completely vertical hole even when positioned on a slope. The VDS enables progressive tilting of the

bolsteriNg the rANge In September, Wacker Neuson released a number of new products. Bolstering its offering of internal vibrators, the company is offering new, high frequency electric internal vibrators in the most common size classes, with model series IEC and IE, with three vibrator head diameters of 38mm, 45mm and 58mm as well as protection hose length of up to 10m.The vibrator head is wearresistant and the protection hose and power cable are characterised by high bending resistance. Three new wheel dumpers – the DW60, DW90 and DW100, with payloads of 6t, 9t and 10t – have also been added to the range. Safety and comfort were in the foreground of the design and development of the models, and the low-maintenance hydrostatic all-wheel drive system and articulated joint provide crosscountry mobility and traction on any surface. Various bucket versions adjust the machine to the individual requirements of work assignments in various industries. The three new compact excavators – the ET65, EW65 and ET90 –save up to 20% fuel with higher performance and a load-sensing hydraulic system. Visibility of the working area is improved by the lateral offset of the boom as well as the valve hood being strongly rounded to the front. Meanwhile, improved kinematics for powerful excavation, higher torque and the increase of the bucket’s angle of rotation to 200 degrees make the new models the best in their class for excavation performance.
Despite heavy competition in the roller segment, Al-Chalabi is confident that Wacker Neuson will make an impact and win over new customers.
superstructure by up to 15 degrees, meaning that with the touch of a button, operators can compensate for slopes of up to 27%, which also results in significantly shorter excavation times. “This gives a lot of savings to the contractor, and it’s a feature that the competition doesn’t have.” Another productivity feature on the miniexcavator range is the quick coupler, allowing a single operator to change buckets quickly and without assistance. Features like these will contribute to the uptake of mini-excavators going forward, Al-Chalabi believes. “We see these increasing year by year in the region.” Better quality concrete vibrators are also in demand. “Contractors see that these result in less costs due to lower wear and tear in a brand-name vibrator, and better quality concrete, meaning less cost of repair and maintenance.” Wacker Neuson has recently launched a new range of concrete vibrators, the IEC and IE series. The machines have a good price-performance ratio, fitting for midlevel customers to achieve good results. “It’s a good value-for-money product.” Other product additions include a set of three new dumpers, and updated compact excavators in the 6-10t range, with fuel efficiency gains of around 20%. The range of rollers has also been strengthened, (though some of the new models won’t be released in the GCC until 2016), including 15 ride-on roller models for soil and asphalt compaction, weighing 1.5-4.5t. These products will be reaching new customers; the rollers will be a new market segment in this region. But while it’s a competitive market, Al-Chalabi believes that being a brand known for reliable machines, good service and availability of spare parts will win over customers. “That’s our strategy, and we hope it will pay off. It’s very competitive in the rollers segment, but we will do our best.”

SHOW AND TELL The Big 5 in DuBai is a chance for manufacTurers anD Dealers To show off Their newesT releases. CMME Takes a Tour To see whaT conTracTors mighT Be Buying in 2016
uestion: What has four wheels, an articulated frame, weighs 2,050kg and has a 3,300mm maximum boom height? Visitors to The Big 5 in Dubai last month might know the answer, as the Pixy 45T Miniloader was just one of numerous machines displayed at the show. Manufacturers and dealers took the opportunity to highlight some of their key models, whether hoping to impress customers from the UAE or those that had travelled from further afield, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar. KEEPing THE glOSS On Manufacturer Genie, part of Terex Group, had an extensive exhibit of products including aerial work platforms and light towers. Chief among these was the SX-150, a relatively new entry into its range in February, and designed alongside the larger SX-180, Genie’s highest reaching self-propelled boom. As the name suggests, the SX-150 is a 150-foot class telescopic boom, with vertical reach of 46.3m (152ft) and a horizontal reach of 24.4m (80ft). Karen Stash, senior director, global product management and marketing at Genie Industries, says that designing the machine in concert with the SX-180 means greater commonality of parts, as well as helping to reduce ownership costs for customers through more efficient serviceability. “The chassis on the SX-150 is the same as on the 180, which is also the same as our ZX-135. Once you’ve worked on one, you can work on all three.” Where possible, Genie designs commonality of parts so that customers don’t have to order expensive parts for a single machine, says Stash. More recently, the company announced an overhaul of its boom maintenance schedule, which increased some service intervals in order to minimise the time customers spend on maintenance. “We’re keenly aware of our customers’ costs when it comes to service.”

Designing the machine in concert with the SX-180 also reduces ownership costs for customers through more efficient serviceability, explains Stash. “The chassis on the SX-150 is the same as on the 180, which is also the same as our ZX-135. Once you’ve worked on one, you can work on all three.” With the AWP industry mainly dominated by rental companies, who frequently move units between job-sites and their depots, making the machines easier to transport is a major factor for customer profitability. That provided the impetus for the X-chassis, which is able to retract to 8-8.5ft (2.6m) so that it can fit onto a standard truck, with no overweight or overheight permits needed, says Stash. “It’s not a hassle to transport it from site to site. When the X-chassis is in, it can drive up and off a flat-bed truck fairly easily, about five minutes on and five minutes off.” Key safety features include a control system programmed so that the machine will always stay within its safe zone. “If you try to operate it too far out in an outreach that is not allowed for that configuration, it won’t let you.” Devices on the platform also improve safety, such as an overhead bar to protect operators, or alarms that trigger if the operator gets pushed forward. An on-board anemometer monitors wind levels. When it comes to durability, Genie has put a lot of focus on materials, especially steel and paint. Larger booms use high-strength 100ksi steel, needed for the height and strain. On the paint, in the last five to seven years the

company has invested “millions of dollars in paint systems and higher quality paint”, says Stash. These efforts have produced large volumes of data on the durability of the paint and other characteristics such as gloss, data that has been used to extend paint life. “This is especially important in a harsh environment like the Middle East.” In the field of electric AWPs, last year Genie launched its first hybrid scissors, the GS-4069 BE and GS-3369 BE Hybrid, designed to be the first machine on a jobsite but also the last to leave, since it can be used outdoors on rough terrain during early stages of a project, and indoors in
battery mode during the final stages. This replaces the need for contractors to rent two separate machines, thus providing a single contract to a rental company. “We hear customers say, ‘If I have it on my site, I’ll use it’,” explains Stash. TAKing iT TO THE cOmPETiTORS UAE dealer United Motors and Heavy Equipment, part of the Darwish Bin Saif group of companies, may be best known in the construction sector as the seller of MAN Trucks, but it has also made moves to bolster its construction machinery range, and now boasts well-known brands, including Generac, manufacturer of lighttowers and gensets; Yale lift trucks; and Sany Heavy Industries. Taking pride of place on their construction equipment stand was the Sany SY215C hydraulic excavator, a 21t operating weight machine. The machine will be a focus for the brand, according to a Sany representative. United Motors is the dealer for Sany’s full range of concrete machinery, including batching plants, truck mixers and placing booms, stationary and mobile pumps, excavators, road construction machines, crawler cranes and piling rigs. The SY215SC presented at the show has a configuration following on from Japanese excavators, and componentry includes a Mitsubishi engine and Kawasaki hydraulic systems. “We want to make sure that on the configuration side we are on the high level, and on the performance level we are on par with our Japanese competitors,” says the brand’s representative. “When we designed this excavator, we were targeting mainly Japanese brands.”

“Customers like our brand – the Italian design and style – but the quality is the most important thing of all. We use the best quality Hardox steel” AugERing fOR gOld One of the most imposing machines at the outdoor display was the Llamada P-140TT continuous flight auger (CFA) shown at the Total Foundation Solutions (TFS) stand. TFS managing director Peter Titus is a geotechnical and structural engineer by training and has worked for a number of main contractors and developers in the region. Three years ago he started TFS, and looked to establish a portfolio of brands that were suitable for the Middle East conditions. “I was looking for companies that didn’t have a representative here, but they had to be complementary to each other, and they had to use techniques that were useful for this region.” One of those brands was Spanish manufacturer Llamada, which was not represented in the region although it is well-regarded in Europe, says Titus. The decision was made to show the P-140TT, because CFA machines are seldom used in Dubai, even though CFA machines are widely used across the GCC in general. As opposed to the more common rotary bored piling, a CFA machine can drill the pile and concrete it “in one fluid motion, so it’s very fast”, explains Titus. “CFA is not widely used
in Dubai, for traditional reasons and partly for regulatory reasons. I wanted to show a machine that people would talk about.” Despite the machine’s height, it was very easy to move into the show space because it collapses small, says Titus. Potential customers who visited the stand were interested in the CFA method, which Titus says is more effective than rotary bored piling. “We find people buy CFA because it is faster and therefore cheaper, so that they can offer a better price to their clients. It’s a very cost-conscious market in the UAE.” If a customer buys a machine, TFS does a commissioning and provides a full week of training for the company, with occasional follow-up training for techniques for a wider variety of soils. Sales in 2015 have doubled on the previous year, says Titus, which he puts down to a growing market profile for his company, as well as a stronger market. “We’re better known and taking a better market share.” WElcOming cOmPETiTORS At MB Crusher’s stand, Najmeddine Sahraoui, area manager for the Middle East, reports an excellent 2015 for the producer of crusher

buckets. “Customers continue to be more familiar with the application, the product and the brand.” MB Crusher was the first in the world to produce crusher buckets, says Sahraoui, and first too in the Middle East, having been selling the product for around 10 years in the Gulf; in that time, its sold thousands of units. With customers in sectors including civil construction, quarrying and demolition, Sahraoui says it has grown sales in all segments in 2015. “Customers like our brand – the Italian design and style – but the quality is the most important thing of all. We use the best quality Hardox steel.” Still, he’s welcoming any new competition from other brands in the region. “We would like to have some more competition, because we cover 90% of the world market and some competition wouldn’t be bad, to help create awareness in the market.” In 2016, MB Crusher will be releasing a new product, though Sahraoui was tight-lipped about details. director Andrew Wood says that in that time he’s seen contractors grow increasingly focused on using high-tech solutions to produce better work. “There’s been a huge uptake from a contractor perspective in finding efficient systems that are replacing unskilled labour with efficient, predictable mechanised systems. That’s getting better every year.” Contractors are generally accepting of up-front acquisition costs, given that downstream benefits far outweigh those costs, says Wood. “There is a strong misconception that labour is cheap in this market.” Cantec covers the entire GCC with its portfolio of brands – including Somero and Allen – and Wood says that contractors in the UAE are the leaders when it comes to accepting new technology in the concrete field, followed by Qatar, where issues with labour visas are making machine solutions even more appealing. “And obviously Saudi Arabia is coming along as well.” Woods adds that mechanisation is a general trend that extends beyond concrete. “Efficient mechanised systems, whether it be concrete or plaster or gypsum – I think a lot of contractors are looking at ways to do more with less.” One of their new machines on the stand this year is the Somero S-485 laser screed, a ride-on model that can screed concrete and rake to three operator-controlled quick pass levels. The screed has a 15.5kW Honda petrol engine with electric start and a four-wheel drive propulsion system with proportional joystick. Ground pressure is 28kPA with an overall width of 2.57m, which translates to a screed head width of 2.44m. The machine can be used for specialist applications including slab on grade or slab on deck, three dimensional contours, chaired rebar or mesh, ice rinks and in-floor heat and freezer slabs. in THE mOOd fOR iTAliAn On Acore Global’s stand, the GCC distributor had exclusively Italian brands – Magni and Cast – even though the dealer sells other brands including Ruthman’s Steiger range, from Germany. Acore sells equipment focused on the access and lifting industry. “The purpose of Acore is to bring in unique products to the market.” Magni is a manufacturer of access platforms drawing industry attention. Founder Riccardo Magni has a long association with the telescopic handler industry, with his family company involved in a joint venture with Manitou Group for
nearly thirty years, until 2009. In 2012, unwilling to retire and “full of excellent new ideas regarding telehandlers”, he founded the eponymous company that today has released two distinct telehandler ranges. “Magni is the next generation machine. This company produces [telehandlers] with the highest reach,” explains Ramdas Rao, managing director of Acore, referring to the brand’s RTH 5.30, the rotating telescopic handler with the highest reach in the world. Launched at INTERMAT in Paris earlier this year, the machine boasts a maximum height of 35m and a load capacity of 2.2t. Magni’s largest telehandler is the HTH 45.14, which has a maximum lifting capacity of 45,000kg,

maximum lifting height of 14m and capacity at maximum height of 22,000kg. On the stand, Acore presented an RTH5.23Smart, equipped with a large work platform to offer customers more options when working at height. Another machine on the stand was the Pixy 45T miniloader. Weighing 2,050kg with four-wheel drive and an articulated frame with telescopic boom at the front, the machine is new to the Middle East. Rao describes it as multipurpose, with a large number of attachments including forks, grapples, buckets and sweepers. He believes it will appeal to civil contractors and landscapers.

traditional industry – you
In the largest merger in the construction equipment sector in 2015, Konecranes and Terex announced plans for a $10bn ‘merger of equals’. The merger is subject to regulatory and shareholder approval and is expected to close in the first half of 2016. But once effective, Middle East customers should see value, both from the broader product range of the new company, but especially from more focus on service, with the larger firm to have a bolstered and responsive service organisation. This isn’t just about boosting existing service levels, it’s also about winning new service contracts globally, which is picked to be a growth area, as more and more customers look to have their servicing outsourced. That will be significant in the port industry, a sector of growing importance in the region. Konecranes has a strong presence in the region – last month, it announced a new deal to deliver 10 automated
rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMG) to the Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, adding to the existing 42 delivered. The new order of ARMGs will be delivered in early 2017. And in an appropriate display of symmetry that demonstrates the aptness of the merger, the straddle carriers used on the port were delivered by Terex Noell, a company owned by Terex since 2009. That means that once the merger is approved, customers such as Khalifa Port will benefit from increased service efficiency. All in all, it looks like there are plenty of savings and synergies for the new company, including supply chain efficiencies and lower costs. Real savings can emerge in the longer term, with the combined research and development of the two companies. Efficiencies on the production side, such as greater commonality of components and spare parts, may take longer, but will also produce benefits for the company and its customers.

With significant sums of money transferred internationally and via banks, sellers and buyers of construction machinery are natural targets for cyber criminals. 2015 has seen increased activity. Mid-year, Komatsu put out a warning that a fraudulent website, set up with the fake company name of Komatsu Global Mining And Construction Company Ghana, was purporting to be an affiliate of the Japanese OEM. The website was emailing people and asking for their personal information in order, for example, to have them apply for false employment opportunities. In the Middle East, UAE construction machinery dealer Construction Machinery Centre (CMC) was the target of online fraudsters. General manager Joe Lahoud put out a warning in August of an “increasing trend, whereby hackers are creating email domains and addresses similar to our business ones and communicating with our customers and suppliers on our behalf”. Lahoud referenced a particular case in which a hacker gained access to a
customer’s private email account and developed an online correspondence impersonating a CMC representative. CMC happened to be expecting an authentic five-digit euro transfer from the customer. Believing the hacker’s messages to be genuine, the customer’s accounting personnel initiated the transfer to a new bank account advised by the hacker. “By pure luck, our chief accountant was following up with the customer regarding a separate matter and he was asked if the transfer was received. Upon clarifying the matter, we were able to take immediate action informing the police, who sent direct instructions to the bank to hold the transfer. It was a matter of hours if not minutes.” As online fraudsters continue to extract money from various activities, it’s clear that in 2016, companies need to continue to examine their existing safeguards and employ more effective and safe online habits where their current set of practices are found to be deficient, as well as be on the guard for malicious attacks.

deregulation of uae fuel market As governments look to balance their budgets in the face of reduced oil revenues, subsidies and taxation are seen by many economists as the solution. This year the UAE made the first steps, announcing that diesel and petrol pricing would be deregulated, with a committee to assess the price at the start of each month. As it turned out, under the new pricing scheme petrol has become more expensive and diesel cheaper, in a boon to the construction and logistics industry, and petrol prices have since fallen to below their previous level. Nevertheless, once oil prices begin to recover, businesses will be paying higher costs for fuel. Other countries are likely to follow the UAE’s lead. James Reeve at Samba Financial Group believes that Saudi Arabia will first introduce energy subsidy reform (starting from 2017 or possibly next year), to be phased in gradually. Higher diesel prices

When oil prices began dropping in mid-2014, there was concern that the construction markets would feel the impact in 2015. Nevertheless, when state budgets were released at year-end, most governments signalled a business-asusual approach. Despite oil prices softening further in 2015, GCC construction markets have performed especially well this year. Nevertheless, while at the beginning of the year there was hope at many levels that oil prices would quickly rebound, the latest projections are that prices could drop even further, with Iran set to begin ramping up production once sanctions are lifted. Meanwhile, global growth remains low, and signs are that China is shifting away from resource-intensive activities. That means cuts to government spending are likely, if not inevitable. Saudi is already taking a focused approach to new capital expenditure approvals, with all new projects worth more than $127m (500SAR) having to be approved by its Council of Economic and
Development Affairs (CEDA). While Saudi has already said that it will cancel projects such as football stadiums, there’s also expectation from some economists that some large projects will be delayed or implemented on a piecemeal basis. Nevertheless, while some cuts will take place, industry hopes are that major projects will continue. Gulf economies will continue to grow in 2016, according to IMF projections (Qatar is expected to grow the most next year, with 4.9% growth; Saudi Arabia the least, just 2.2%). Large budget cuts could result in a further drop in growth. Nevertheless, some states will be less affected. Qatar is likely to remain committed to the bulk of its infrastructure projects and preparations for the 2022 World Cup. With large fiscal reserves, the UAE is one of the best placed states to continue to spend on strategic projects. With the construction industry having enjoyed a strong 2015, most will be hoping that any impact of low oil prices in 2016 will be muted.

ConstruCtion Hoists DECEMBER 201 5

onstruction hoists are less conspicuous than tower cranes on a high-rise job-site, but equally important for productivity. They are used to deliver workers and occasionally tools to different floors once the concrete shell is in place. While –as in any lifting segment – safety is paramount, it’s no secret that the construction hoist sector is heavily pricedriven. Since Chinese brands began contesting the market in the mid-2000s, they have proven intensely attractive. Meanwhile, European brands look to distinguish their products, or in some cases have embraced manufacturing in China to offer a product tailored to market demands. Despite the fixation on price, quality does make a difference. On a CMME site visit to a twin hotel tower construction site in Jeddah, the two towers had each been fitted with a construction hoist. On the first, the ride was smooth and quiet, with the cage and hoist mechanism in good working order; on the second, the hoist rattled and scraped up the side of the rail – functional but uncomfortable. According to the site manager, both had been purchased at the same time, a demonstration that quality does count. One of the best-known names in the industry is Alimak Hek. Speaking at the recent Big 5 in Dubai, Pieter-Jan van Linden, general manager of Alimak Hek Group’s Middle East operations, and Sami Sukaik, managing director of Al Wisam Trading, the brand’s distributor

alimak group wins $1.3m hoist order Alimak Group has announced a $1.29m (11 MSEK) order in the Middle East for industrial elevators to be supplied to an oil refinery, to be delivered during the first and second quarter of 2016. The new order includes industrial elevators based on both traction and rack and pinion technology. “We are proud to win this new order in the oil & gas industry. The order clearly demonstrates the strategic fit of our acquisition of Heis-Tek during 2014 and our ability to offer an even wider and more attractive range of vertical access solution for different needs based on a combination of technologies,” said Tormod Gunleiksrud, CEO of Alimak Group. Alimak acquired Heis-Tek in June 2014 as part of the strategy to further expand and strengthen its product and service offering of vertical access solutions to the oil & gas industry. Through the acquisition, Alimak also broadened its product portfolio from rack and pinion-based technology to traction and hydraulic elevators. According to Gunleiksrud, Alimak is one of the few suppliers with the ability to provide a total elevator service and inspection support offering on a global basis to the oil & gas industry, onshore and offshore.
in the UAE, explained the company’s current approach to the GCC markets. The company, which manufactures passenger hoists, material hoists, mastclimbing work platforms and transport platforms, has its headquarters in Sweden, with factories in Skellefteå in northern Sweden and in Changshu, China. The Changshu factory on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, 90km northwest of Shanghai, was opened in 2006. Following the global downturn in 2008-9, the company foresaw increased demand for the Chinese-built product and expanded the factory. Swedish-built hoists use Swedish steel, while those produced in China source locally. “But we make sure we match or over-match [specifications] in China,” says van Linden. “The standards are set in Sweden, and the local R&D team sources the appropriate steel in China.” When it comes to the hoist industry, safety is the biggest issue, says van Linden. Alimak Hek hoists are equipped with an overspeed safety device attached to the drive shaft; if a hoist descends too quickly, the descent is automatically arrested. On the sales front, Alimak Hek has had a

“fantastic year” in the Middle East, says van Linden. “The market came back for us – like anyone else – but also we have developed and introduced a new model of hoist, and that picked up really nicely.” Those new models are the Alimak SC 45/30 & SC 65/32 passenger and materials construction hoists, jointly developed by the Swedish and Chinese factories and produced in Changshu. Key features include low cost of ownership, through durability, accessibility and easy installation and dismantling; smooth operation through frequency control, which provides smooth starting and stopping; and robust car design, with a choice of door and ramp options. The SC 45/30 is also capable of sharing a mast with the Hek medium range of transport platforms. Price is also important. “It’s very competitively priced,” points out van Linden. “It has all the advantages of an Alimak Hek machine, designed by our engineers, but we’ve made it in China to make sure that the price would be spot-on, to compete in a very competitive market.” The Middle East hoist sector has seen a shift in recent years, with many companies no longer purchasing equipment to keep
41
“The market came back for us – like anyone else – but also we have developed and introduced a new model of hoist, and that picked up really nicely” long term. Instead, with the global financial crisis and regional uncertainty, buyers with one project on their books look for a hoist that will fulfil their immediate needs. In the UAE, Sukaik says that many customers who previously had purchased the Alimak Hek machines have begun looking for lower cost alternatives, to reduce acquisition and service costs. “There is more demand now for the Chinese products, as well as rentals for construction sites.” Al Wisam offers rental as an option, with a minimum period of 6-12 months, says Sukaik. That dynamic forced Alimak Hek to design the new SC 45/30 hoist. “You saw an increase in demand for the mid-market range, where we didn’t really have a product to match that,” explains van Linden. “So we had to design a new machine.” He’s optimistic that the company will win business in the Middle East in 2016 and going forward. “We will take [sales] from the mid-market. With the SC45/30, we are now covering the full range, where before we were a niche player.” German manufacturer GEDA is another
well-known name in the hoist industry. The company has operated in the Gulf for roughly ten years, and service-capable dealers are its preferred route to the market, says Markus Dommer, area sales manager for the Middle East. In 2013, GEDA appointed United Equipment Group (UEG) its dealer in Qatar. The move quickly saw results. UEG, which enjoys a strong position in the crane market as the sole distributor of Liebherr tower cranes, took supply of 10 GEDA PH Twin units for its rental stock, with further units sold to customers. The GCC markets have a number of differences from GEDA’s home markets in Europe, says Dommer, with ownership of hoists by rental companies more concentrated in Europe. Nevertheless, he’s seeing a swing to rental companies owning hoists in the GCC too, a trend which maps other sectors in the construction machinery sector. “In the Gulf it is more owner operated, but we feel that there is a swing towards rental and leasing. It’s on the rise, but nothing like it is Europe.” In addition to its hoists for civil
Alimak Hek: An installation showing an Alimak hoist and a Hek platform on a single mast.
construction applications, GEDA also produces industrial hoists used for applications such as oil rigs, bridges and bridge pylons, and the power sector. “Hoists are used not just for maintaining the power plant or oil rig, but also during construction, and we like to have our hoists involved.” GEDA produces ex-proof hoists for hazardous environments, and has equipment operating in oil & gas sites including RasGas in Qatar and Ruwais in Abu Dhabi. When it comes to the market for civil construction hoists, Dommer describes it as a constant struggle over price. “If a company is thinking about their business project to project, they tend to elect for [cheaper] equipment. If they think about it in a longerterm perspective, they tend more to invest in quality and safety.” Buying a premium European hoist means lower ownership costs, with less demand for spare parts, believes Dommer. GEDA has a number of technology solutions to improve the lifespan of a hoist, including state-of-theart corrosion protection, such as stainless steel components, hot dip galvanised, powder coating and cathodic dip coating on various parts of the hoist to make sure surfaces are as protected as possible. Operator training is also important to improve the unit’s life and utiliity on-site. “You have to constantly train the designated operator for the hoist,” says Dommer. Construction job-sites in the Middle East typically employ large numbers of labourers, meaning demand for more hoists spread across the site, rather than larger hoists, in order to reduce bottlenecks. At the same time, buildings are often over 100m tall, requiring a bigger hoist. “Within this range, contractors tend to go for the smaller 2t hoists and have them spread over the job site.” Chinese crane and hoist manufacturer GJJ/Orbit first opened a Middle East office in Dubai in 2010. The company, which claims to be the largest manufacturer of construction hoists in the world, offers single cage and twin cage options in its general hoist range, available with or without counterweight. Lifting speeds are 0-36m/min, with capacities ranging from 1,000kg to 2 x 3,200kg on its twin cage range. It also has a range of frequency conversion building hoists, with lifting speeds of up to 96m/min on some of the range-topping models. NFT Crane, the largest tower crane rental company in the Middle East and dealer for Potain tower cranes, is the sole supplier of GJJ/Orbit hoists in the GCC, as well as PEGA material and passenger hoists. The company has around 300 hoists in its rental stock.

The machines feature an integrated, all-Cat power train with differential steering and an electronically controlled hydraulic system that places total control of lifting functions into one single joystick. Independent, variable-speed winches for the boom and hook provide precise control, and the enhanced counterweight system ensures a low centre of gravity for optimum performance. A new Roll-over Protection Structure (ROPS) provides added safety for both open and enclosed operator’s stations. The new cab is pressurised and incorporates
new operator-comfort and convenience features, designed to meet the demands of the pipeline industry for increased lift capacity, enhanced slope capability, ease of operation, performance and transportability. Rated lift capacity (at tipping point) is 40,823kg for the PL72, 77,111kg for the PL83 and 97,972kg for the PL87. A non-suspended, elevated-sprocket undercarriage provides ample track-on-ground for added stability, and the new models’ massive mainframes and main cases resist operating stress. The compact-profile winch assemblies feature oil-disc brakes to provide smooth operation and positive retention of boom and hook positions; the modular, pin-on design of the winches allows fast service in the field. Counterweight segments are contoured to provide optimum lifting performance and are extended hydraulically for efficient load balance and clearance. A new electronic kick-out switch for the PL83 and PL87 ensures that counterweights are retracted to the correct position.
The boom features high-tensile-strengthsteel construction and a narrow design that enhances visibility to the work area. Replaceable boom-mount bearings are designed for long life and easy service. The short-profile block set enhances visibility to the work area and extends the working range of the boom. new boom booster kit for terex suPerLift Why get it? iNcreases liftiNg caPacity, liftiNg height aNd cost effectiveNess Terex Cranes is now offering a Boom Booster kit for the Superlift 3800, available in lengths of 24m to 84m. The new release increases the main boom’s stiffness, boosting the crane’s lifting capacity by up to 30%. The welded steel structure consists of up to seven sections with a length of 12m, and comes with the Terex fall protection system as standard. The kit is designed to be directly mounted on the crane, and when equipped the Superlift 3800 crane can reach a maximum hook height of 174m and lift loads of up to 80t at max hook. The BB kit enables the crane to handle lifts that would otherwise be the exclusive domain of machines in the 750t class. This means that this costeffective crane is effectively raising the bar for its lifting capacity class worldwide. Terex Cranes has developed the structure with an overall width of
3.5m, making it easy to transport. Two additional boom sections can slide into the BB kit during transportation, eliminating the need for at least one truck that would otherwise be required. Another highlight of the BB kit is the optionally available Superlift Split Tray with quick coupling technology, which can be used when setting up the main boom with or without the BB kit. Once the main boom is set up, the counterweight that is no longer required can easily be uncoupled, after which the crane can move with only the Superlift counterweight still needed. The Split Tray reduces the amount of assembly time and personnel required and eliminates the need for an assist crane for this particular procedure. In addition, a 3.5m extension for the Superlift mast enables an increase to the Superlift radius from 19m to 21m and allows long boom systems to be lifted from the ground without an assist crane. kaLmar brings in fast Charging Why get it? aN iNdustry first for electric Powered shuttle aNd straddle carriers Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has announced it will introduce the port industry’s first fast-charging solution for electric powered shuttle and straddle carriers. The Kalmar FastCharge solution is locally emission-free and can be applied to both automated and manual operations. The solution is based on the same opportunity charging technology used in electric buses. The charging station with a pantograph direct current charging system is located flexibly on the working route of the machinel. The machine has modern lithiumion batteries which enable fast charging. Charging happens during the idle time in the machine working cycle when it has stopped to wait for a container. Typical charging time in operation is 30 to 180 seconds, and with the maximum charging power of 600kW, full charge can be achieved in a few minutes. “This technology makes the charging process smooth, as there is no need to take the machine out of operation for battery swapping. Neither is there a need to invest in battery swapping stations and extra batteries,” said Dr Tero Kokko, vice president, Horizontal Transportation at Kalmar. The Kalmar FastCharge solution consists of electric powered shuttle or straddle carriers and fast charging stations. Kalmar plans to bring the solution to the market during 2016.

01 Follow recommenDeD service intervals OEMs will provide guidance on the recommended service intervals, from those features which need to be checked every 10 hours of operation, to those that only need to be changed once a year. Adhering to these guidelines requires accurate records of machine operational hours.
02 Daily checks Operators should be trained to do visual inspections of their machines before they start work on the shift. This includes a walk-around, checking for obvious damage from the previous shift, such as loose hoses, fittings or any oil residue that can signal a leak. Data from Loadrite’s onboard systems can reveal much about the workings of a quarry.

ith products to improve machine performance and productivity constantly released and updated, there’s plenty of scope for operators and site managers to use technology to improve job-site performance. When it comes to making the most of technology, machines and operators in quarries are at the front of the pack. That may come as no surprise: according to Trimble Loadrite, because of the large amount of capital deployed by customers, a 2-3% saving on operation costs can add up to millions of dollars saved in a year. The first Loadrite technology was developed in New Zealand in 1979, by Actronic Technologies, in order to solve truck loading problems at a waste transfer station. The engineers used their understanding of machine hydraulics and electronics to develop a scale to weigh buckets and record weights on wheel loaders. More recently, in 2013, the company was acquired by Trimble for an undisclosed sum. “The acquisition of Actronic Technologies empowers machine operators, foremen, supervisors and project managers to understand machine performance and progress across the entire site within the aggregate, construction, mining and waste industries,” said Roz Buick, vice president and general manager of Trimble’s Heavy Civil Construction Division at the time. “Loadrite
weighing systems expand the richness of the Connected Site information we collect from machines and complement the productivity and reporting capabilities we already provide our customers.” CMME spoke with John Vaassen, manager EMEA business at Trimble Loadrite, about the company’s “total solution” for quarrying and aggregate sites. At the heart of Loadrite’s offering are weighing systems, whether on excavators, wheel loaders or plant conveyor belts. Weigh systems can be used – directly or indirectly – to measure almost every process in a quarry, starting with the dynamite blast and the optimisation of the haulage through to the crusher. By using the weighing sensor on the excavator handling the blasted material, a quarry operator can measure how successful a blast was, compared with its theoretical value, for example 10,000 tonnes. “We measure what they actually achieve with a blast – how much oversize there was, how much shot-rock. It’s a very simple measure, but operators can use it to get a better blast performance,” explains Vaassen.

“Each small process gets adjusted to make the quarry more and more efficient. It’s about optimisation” The next step to optimise is loading the haul truck. By using the weigh sensors, excavators operators can make sure that haul trucks are correctly loaded. This means that haul trucks aren’t making extra trips, and the volume of material reaching the primary crusher is steady and matched to its production. At the same time, it also prevents the overloading of haulers, which can be dangerous and contributes to expensive tyre wear. “We’re using one device to do multiple things,” says Vaassen. While the material is going through the crushing and screening process, Loadrite provides systems that can measure production volumes. It achieves this by using load cells on the conveyors, coupled with a speed wheel, to measure outputs in real time, and is connected to the quarry’s PLC. One unit can be used to measure up to four conveyors at once, and operators can monitor the conveyors in real time, with production shown on screens in the quarry lunch room or site office, or on a mobile device. This displays the total weight and tonnes per hour across various belts, as well as the production levels on each belt. This allows the quarry manager to monitor in real time the building of stock pile volumes. “With this system we have a live stock balance, we know exactly
how much material is in that stockpile.” The wheel loader is the main workhorse on a quarry, whether it’s in charge of stockpiling or loading road trucks. With weigh sensors on the loaders, operators can keep track of stockpile volumes, but more useful is the ability to accurately load road-driving trucks. The L2180 is the most popular scale in Loadrite’s range, accounting for more than 70% of all installations worldwide. It uses proprietary friction and ambient compensation technology (FACT) software, to calculate an accurate weight, regardless of time of day, machine type, operator or temperature. When loading into a truck, the target weight can be automatic, or set each time, or linked to specific trucks. The system is also used to track sales of aggregates, and the weigh system is trade legal, meaning that quarry operators can legally sell to their customers for the amount shown. This means there is no need for a weigh bridge, though the system can be integrated with one. One quarry customer in France has entirely removed its weigh bridge, replacing it with a kiosk at entry: truck drivers punch in their code, sending a message to the wheel loader operator and giving them the target weight
The loader weigh systems are trade legal, meaning that they can be used to invoice customers for material loaded onto their trucks.
to load the vehicle. This reduces labour and maintenance costs, says Vaassen, though busier quarries normally retain a weigh bridge. Quarry customers accept the weigh system, says Vaassen, noting that Loadrite developed the first legal for trade weigh sensor on a wheel loader in 1992. “It’s been around for a while.” Beyond helping operators load faster, the weigh systems also yield a wealth of data to allow site managers to analyse their overall efficiency. The technology can show how many trucks are being loaded per hour or per day, or the real-time output of a crusher over a shift. “This information could be in five different locations on the quarry, it’s all mobile.” Back in the office, reports can be used to drill into performance of the various elements of a quarry, such as individual machines and operators, and to look for patterns indicating under-performance. From there, site managers can rectify the situation. There are also multi-site management reports, allowing a regional manager to compare one site with another, such as total outputs across the various sites, or drilling in and focusing on details such as comparing multiple conveyors against key performance drivers. Looking at the list of trucks, and details about the time they spend in each time, can reveal details such as one product stockpile being in the wrong location. Solutions may include changing the truck routing or moving the stockpile itself. “Each small process gets adjusted to make the quarry more and more efficient. It’s about optimisation.” Naturally, while there is an advantage to measuring across the full chain, in some instances customers only want to measure a single step. “We have a solutions mentality, so we look at the solutions we provide. Nevertheless, we recognise that sometimes we have to provide just a basic system,” says Vaassen. Loadrite sells through distributors. Some are also Sitech dealers, distributing Trimble’s heavy civil construction products, and some of them are Loadrite only. Distributors in the Middle East include Al Swaidan in Doha, Sitech in Saudi Arabia and Sitech Gulf. Vaassen sees applications for the Loadrite weigh systems in civil construction where excavators are heavily used, such as loading of road trucks, and also to optimise haulage within the construction site, especially on long road sites where large amounts of material are being hauled. For road construction, scales can ensure that trucks are on the road with a legal weight and not overloaded. With some OEMs already

Loadrite in the middLe east In the Middle East, Loadrite has been successfully used for quarry and aggregate applications. In Doha, Al Swaidan used on-board scales on four-wheel loaders used for loading and stockpiling screened products the company was providing to a road contractor. According to a Loadrite case study, Al Swaidan was billing the contractor (Consolidated Contractors Group (CCC)) different amounts for each material grade, and was faced with the problem of providing accurate volume estimations for billing purposes. Using a surveying method was inaccurate, since the weight of the stockpiles compressed the material on the bottom, leading to an underestimate of 20%. The alternative of passing all transporting trucks over a weigh station was time-consuming, and with each truck trip lasting an extra 12 minutes, was expected to add $400 per day to the operation’s cost. The Loadrite L2180 scale and printer was tested and found to be accurate, and was used to measure the weight of the different grades provided to the customer, allowing precise billing. For the unmixed sub-base, 159,298t was stockpiled by the Loadriteequipped wheel loaders. The material was then loaded into the mixing plant until the stockpile was exhausted, with 159,236t measured, a difference of only 62t, or 0.04% variation.
offering machines with on-board payload measurement systems, the advantage of Loadrite – apart from the sophistication of the product – is that it works across a fleet of mixed machines. “We’re not beholden to any one machinery manufacturer, and we work with all of them.” Additionally, their product fits onto the fixed plant, an area where a mobile plant OEM won’t be focused, explains Vaassen. As in any data-rich environment, successfully understanding and acting upon the data can be more difficult than actually collecting it. One advantage of the Loadrite system is that it provides information and reports designed for a range of perspectives, whether it’s a site manager checking progress outputs hourly, or someone who may only check the reports every few days and wants a bigger picture view. When hunting efficiency in a quarry, operators and managers need to focus on small details, such as the best loading patterns for a wheel loader. “It’s all those small little details that actually make a difference, it’s cumulative.” In one customer example, a large quarry company believed it was doing a good job loading haul trucks. But giving the operator a tool to allow it to do its job better ultimately
Weigh systems on excavators can perform a number of functions, from aiding operators to load more accurately, to giving snapshots of daily productivity for machines and operators.
allowed it to increase tonnes per cycle from 36t to 42.2t. “It was an 18% improvement with no other changes,” says Vaassen. This company continued to analyse its hauler truck loading processes, and eventually upgraded to larger excavators and larger haul trucks to match. In the end, they were hauling 66t per cycle. “This enabled them to change their operational hours from 16 hours a day to nine hours a day.” The shorter working day reduced downstream costs, with lower running hours for primary and tertiary plants, as well as other savings such as less reliance on sub-contractors, all with the same production. While Trimble acquired Loadrite in 2013, there’s still plenty of work to be done to eventually integrate various systems and migrate products into the different operating systems. One Trimble product Vaassen is excited about is a system to aid blasting drills, using GPS on the drill rigs and 3D modelling software to ensure that the drilling is precisely to the bottom of the hole, with a flat surface on the bottom to aid blasting performance. Currently, Loadrite is working on integrating its own three pieces of software – processing plant software, Insight HQ and the Material Management System (MMS) reporting system – into a single system.
