passion for perfection It is well known that where the automotive world is concerned, Italians are famous for their passion and creativity. Any red blooded petrol head has to love his Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis and Alfa Romeos. What is less well known is that the same umbrella group that produces these works of automotive art also produces some of the best construction machinery in the world. And with equal passion for perfection. Case Construction equipment, part of the CNH industrial group - which itself is an arm of Fiat Industrial, the company that owns the illustrious car brands mentioned above – needs no introduction to the construction world or even to many laymen. Its passion for getting its products right, however, is a story that needs to be seen and then told. On a recent trip to CNH Industrial’s facilities in Italy that manufacture Case equipment for the Middle East market, I was fortunate to witness first-hand how committed the Italians are to building faultless construction machines. Whether it’s a wheel loader, a backhoe loader or a telehandler, for the men and women building it, the equipment is no less than a Ferrari. There is the same meticulous attention to design and detail – probably more so, considering that construction equipment has to be more robust than road going cars by default. Every step of the manufacturing process is thought over and analysed for further improvement and refinement to make it world class – the Case factories are of course WCM certified – and, once the machines are built, the testing can take them to within inches of their lives.

The pride that goes into building anything automotive in Italian culture is amply evident at all places in Case’s production facilities. We try to give you a glimpse into that pride and the resulting process it produces in our look at Case’s plant in Lecce and its FPT engine facility in Turin. Back home, we take a look at two new cold planers that Caterpillar has recently brought to the region, no doubt wagering that with road and infrastructure still being built while most other areas of construction are down, the times call for bolstering their road machinery offering. As the year winds to a close, we also review 10 events and happenings that we thought were seminal for the industry this year, encompassing new product releases, projects and trends. Some of them – such as backhoes gaining popularity, the preference for used and rental equipment, and the sophistication of telematics - may be relevant well into the next year and probably beyond. For now, though, it’s time to bid adieu to a challenging year with a holiday season in which we wish you all the best. See you in the New Year!

According to Manitowoc, when equipped with this aerial package, the NBT40-1 boom trucks series, which comprises three new models — the NBT36-1, NBT40-1 and the NBT45-1 — is aimed at the utility market and will enable companies to perform both crane lifting and aerial lift projects more efficiently with just one machine. Genie booms build danish wasteto-enerGy plant

ooms from powered access major Genie are helping in the completion of a wasteto-energy plant under construction in Copenhagen, Denmark, by Amager Ressource Centre — an organisation owned by five Danish municipalities. The plant, Amager Bakke, is a worldleading effort to reduce fossil energy and waste, designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. When it opens next year, it will be able to recycle the city’s estimated 400,000t of annual garbage into electricity and heat for up to 170,000 households. In addition to turning trash into treasure, it will also provide an 85m high rooftop ski slope running down to ground level for recreational use. The striking windowed brick-style aluminium facing covering the entire 26,000sqm exterior surface of the building is designed, produced and installed by Czech Republic-based facade specialists Sipral, who chose three Genie booms to help ensure the successful completion of the complex task on a tight schedule. “We turned to Kranpunkten, a Scandinavian rental company for access equipment,” says Michal Prokop, project manager Sipral. Their recommendation? A telescopic Genie SX-180 super boom offering a maximum working height of 57m and a maximum outreach of 24.4m, and two articulating Genie Z-135/70 booms offering a maximum working

height of 43m, maximum horizontal outreach of 18.03m and up-and-over clearance maximum of 23.01m. The machines worked together to lift, lower and secure the initial base layer of the facade’s 1.5t sections of thermal, acoustic and waterproof cladding into position. This was followed by the final phase of the process: positioning and installing the decorative outer layer comprising 3,250 aluminium brick-style cassettes each weighing 80kg. When it came to reaching up and over, thanks to the smooth extension of their three-section articulating booms and 110-degree rotating vertical jib with a 3.66 to 6.10m telescoping JibExtend extension, “the articulating Genie Z-135/70 lifts proved instrumental in reaching the most difficult access areas with ease”, notes Prokop. For work at extreme heights up to 57m, the Genie SX-180 boom provided a 2.44m, 340kg capacity platform with adequate space for two people to work comfortably with their tools. The platform provides 160 degrees of rotation while the turntable rotates a full 360 degrees. Having been operated on the site for the past year, “all three Genie units proved to be extremely reliable and, despite the job’s complexity, met our requirements perfectly both in terms of their smooth capabilities as well as mobility and safety,” notes Prokop.

C

ybercrime comes with significant cost. It was been estimated that the global economic cost of combating cybercrime could reach $400 billion, according to a report entitled “Net Losses: Estimating the Global Cost of Cybercrime”, published by the McAfee Centre for Strategic and International Studies a couple of years ago. The study suggested most countries, governments and companies underestimate how much risk they face from cybercrime and how quickly this risk can grow, claiming that potential global losses caused by cybercrime are estimated at $375 billion annually, while the maximum could be as much as much $575 billion. The challenges of cybercrime are more than economic; they are compounded by the networked nature of the issue. Today’s interconnected business environment increases an organisation’s vulnerability to security attacks, as security is no longer confined by the boundaries of a single company but transcends them to be dependent on all those operating on the same network, claim Zhao et al in the Journal of Management Information Systems. Last year, this magazine obtained an exclusive interview with Joe Lahoud, general manager Construction Machinery Centre Co LLC (CMC) in the UAE, who had recently been the victim of fraud. He acknowledged an “increasing trend” whereby hackers are creating email addresses and website domains similar to those used by genuine company representatives and communicating with customers and suppliers directly. Lahoud referenced a particular case in which a hacker accessed a customer’s private email account and developed an online correspondence impersonating a CMC representative. CMC happened to be expecting an authentic five-digit euro transfer from the customer. Believing the hacker’s messages to be genuine, the customer’s accounting personnel initiated the transfer to a new bank account advised by the hacker. This instance of cybercrime took on a new dimension. Instead of taking advantage of a deficiency in a security system, as mentioned in the Journal of Management Information Systems, the fraudulent individuals were actively developing websites and email accounts realistic enough to fool customers into transferring large funds. This tactic is known as social engineering, with con artists concocting ingenious schemes to trick people into giving up personal information or visiting websites that download viruses. “I strongly advise you to review your security measures and money transfer procedures. We need better data protection, both at the individual corporate level as well as societal government level, but we also need better detection and response,” says Lahoud. This type of cybercrime demonstrates the levels of ingenuity criminals possess, but perhaps the most common and most worrying security risks come from within the


17 organisation itself, suggests Mark Button, director of the Centre for Counter Fraud Studies, University of Portsmouth, UK. “It takes a lot more sophistication to actually hack into a company website, and of course, out there in the world there are very many skilled computer operatives capable of doing such work. However, there are a lot of very simplistic security issues that can cause equally traumatic threats to a company. These include simple measures such as changing default passwords - an easy way to prevent unauthorised people entering and making changes without detection. Another simple online security threat is a corrupt staff member or disgruntled employee who gives away confidential cyber information, thus highlighting the need to regularly change all passwords.” Having a thorough awareness of online security strategies, combined with vigilance, is the key to preventing cybercrime, suggests Button. “I think organisations are waking up to the possible risks and attacks. This realisation will bring much greater interest in developing the best strategy to counter the present threats. Equally, you have lots of individuals who are of a corrupt nature, and they are realising that there is a large potential in these type of criminal attacks. Not all require high levels of education or skill. If you can just get one corrupt insider to allow you access into a laptop or computer system,

Finnish crane maker Konecranes experienced a fraud when $19.2 million was stolen from one of its foreign subsidiaries. Konecranes said perpetrators used identity theft and other methods to induce the subsidiary to make unwarranted payments. A similar attack was targeted at Komatsu, when a fraudulent website was created posing as a Komatsu Group Company asking people to provide them with their personal information in order to apply for false employment opportunities. Ultimately, preventing cybercrime comes down to strategy. If an organisation has the resources, then they need to be investing in someone appropriate for the task of protecting their assets online. “This is all about organisation and strategy. The person who really understands the full range of risks is able to help the firm develop the most resilient strategy,” Button continues. “An organisation can go to the best, most expensive IT company that provides very technical skills to detect and block attacks, but then, if they don’t cover the staff, who can be turned or tricked, then they’re missing out on a much more vulnerable point of entry. “This is what I mean by a strategy. This is what will prevent cyber criminals from conducting successful attacks.”

or a company that has been in business for more than 170 years, certain habits are bound to stick. The trick is to ensure that those habits are the good ones – which is precisely the area where construction equipment maker Case has excelled. Since starting production in the 1840s, the brand has gone from strength to strength and is now synonymous globally for quality and innovation in construction equipment. Supplying its products to the world from eight production facilities on four continents, the brand is recognised for both its large equipment such as excavators and wheel loaders, and, especially in the Middle East, for compact machines such as skid steer loaders and backhoe loaders. . A lot of the Case equipment available in our region is made in its Italian facilities, where it begins life at several places together. The engines, for example, are built at the FPT Industrial facility in Turin, which is owned by CNH Industrial – the umbrella groups that owns Case and its sister brands. The final assembly takes place in its plant at Lecce in southern Italy. Taking CMME on a tour of the facility, plant manager Paolo Piccoli says: “When we talk of Case, we are talking about 174 years of history, so our brand is a really big one. This plant is big, too, with production lines for compact wheel loaders, telehandlers, backhoe loaders and wheel loaders. Starting this year it is also producing a grader model for the European market. “Our fabrication arm produces the main components

Automatic guided vehicles deliver speciallycrafted component trolleys to every line according to the machine being assembled on that day and at that time. All components are held in neatly laid out trays on the trolleys, arranged in such a height that a worker does not need to either bend or stretch. Hydraulic pipes and tubes are arranged in a colourcoded sequence on the tray that tell the worker where they are meant to fit and in what order. In a strictly codified process, nothing is overlooked or left to chance. Not even operational comfort for the line workers. The end result is an error-free manufacturing process, giving the customer a faultless piece of equipment that will run to its optimum capacity from the word go and provide years of seamless service.

At the heart of a Case or CNH Industrial product, there beats an engine that bears the FPT Industrial brand. FPT, or Fiat Power Train, is the arm of the CNH Industrial group that develops, produces and sells engines for industrial, on- and off-road vehicles, marine applications and power generation. With a large production range – six engine families with a power output from 31 to 1,000hp and gearboxes with torque ranges from 300 to 500Nm – and with a huge focus on R&D activities, FPT Industrial is one of the biggest players in the industrial engine sector worldwide. FPT Industrial’s 86,000sqm Turin plant is a WCM Silverlevel facility, said its head of operations, Domenico Nucera. Among the group’s production sites it supplies engines to are the Case factories in Lecce and San Mauro. “The plant is the product of a joint venture called EEA (European Engine Alliance) signed in 1996 between Iveco, CNH and Cummins. FPT was born later, in 2005, for the development and production of a new engine called NEF (New Engine Family) – a high-quality product that had to remain competitive in the market while following the new European standards on emissions. “Today we are producing every kind of engine, including Euro VI for on-road applications and Tier 4 Final for off-road, with a total annual production capacity of 200,000 engines,” Nucera says. The NEF engine that the plant produces is one of the most popular engines in various applications across CNH Industrial products. It is a modular, four- or six-cylinder engine used for on-road, off-road, marine and power generation purposes. The CNH Industrial premises in Turin is also home to another important facility – the Turin Testing Center of FPT Industrial. On this site, which covers an area of 28,000sqm, 400 people work in three shifts to not only test every aspect of the engines produced by the FPT plant but also to research new technologies and develop new power trains.

The production volume is around 17 machines per day, which we can, of course, ramp up substantially according to the prevailing demand and order backlog. All models from this plant, except the compact wheel loader, are sold in the Middle East.” Production begins with precision laser cutting of the main components, followed by welding and painting. Machining of structures, parts and components are done wherever necessary to meet the fine tolerances required for a product of the calibre that Case makes. Components are received from different suppliers and go to the four assembly lines, where a mix of experienced and young, eager hands put the machines together using the advanced engines from FPT. Zero defects In pursuit of a quality product, Case has invested heavily in quality processes at its Lecce plant, where a staunch belief in the benefits of World Class Manufacturing or WCM runs high, Piccoli says. “We have made several investments to assure zero defects, which is one of the key requirements of WCM. The acceptable number for faults is zero, so we are constantly striving to gain complete control on quality,” he explains. “We started to work on WCM in 2008 and in 2014 the plant won the bronze medal, which tells you how serious we are about delivering on quality. The advantage of WCM logic is that we can see continuous improvement based on training and implement well-thought out methods to avoid errors.” A spate of quality checks run along the production lines, with the aim of filtering out mistakes as soon as possible and to have the ability to track back to where the mistake was first made for rectification. The plate cutting areas, the bending and shaping areas, the welding areas, the loader arm fabrication line and the front and rear frame fabrication lines, as also the frame, boom and axle painting areas, all have individual quality gates with various tests. Thereafter, the final assembly process has its own sets of quality checks, not the least of which is a specific double check of all the tightening torques. At the end of the line, 100% of finished production units undergo functional tests and the all-important hydraulic stress tests. “Quality gates detect errors and double check for all the torque. This is really important because the hydraulic system is the heart of our machine, so

While production may be over, for many machines, an ordeal is just about to begin. Experts from the plant’s proving grounds take over next, putting random machines through rigorous steps at the on-premises test facilities and testing them to within inches of their lives. The machines are driven for hours on various kinds of terrain and made to perform repetitive tasks. Some are packed into a special chamber where they are rolled and flipped over, lifted up, turned upside down and dropped, smashed and impacted from all sides to test for operator safety in case of an accident. While individual components and systems have already been qualified with pre-production testing in a dedicated facility with 10 individual test cells, of particular interest to Middle East customers are some extreme tests that simulate job site conditions in the region. The transmission and clutch are hooked on to a dynamometer and put through 20,000 continuous cycles of engaging and disengaging, then measured for wear. In another cell, called the climate room, the machines are run through temperatures that are first lowered to -50 degrees Celsius and then raised to 60 degrees. In the end, Case ensures its machines can take a tough life, so that its customers have an easy one.

for used equipment starts to increase,” a spokesperson from Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar LLC, Caterpillar’s distributor in the region, told CMME earlier this year. “During such scenarios, we have noticed that purchase of used machines falls within the budget for those customers who still have projects to run.” According to Al-Bahar, in addition to offering cost-effectiveness, used machines also come with lower risk. Since the investment is considerably lower, down-time between projects does not impact the bottom line as much. Where fleet owners still need new or replacement machines, or in the rare cases where they need to update their fleets, second hand machinery is the first choice in tough times. Machinery auctioneers Ritchie Bros. have benefitted from this trend and from the global spread of their operations. “We have the ability to transcend local challenges in any market by bringing in buyers from outside to create more liquidity and help maintain pricing levels,” Karl Werner, chief operations support and development officer and MD, Middle East, Africa and India, at Ritchie Bros, told CMME.

The LRT 1090-2.1 and LRT 1100-2.1 will be formally unveiled to the public at the Conexpo construction machinery trade show in Las Vegas in March next year. Both new crane models feature an outrigger monitoring system as standard. The support status, on tyres or outriggers, is detected automatically and saved to the crane controller. The attachment of the ballast to the turntable and the installation of the optional double folding jib including its angle adjustment are also recorded and monitored. The VarioBase variable support base developed by Liebherr as standard on the new LRT cranes makes an important contribution to enhancing safety. VarioBase allows each individual outrigger beam to be extended to arbitrary lengths. The crane work is controlled by the load moment limiter, which calculates the maximum load capacities precisely for a situation. This prevents accidents by human error during the assembly process and when hoisting loads. As a result of the increased lifting capacities when

hoisting over the supports, the crane can hoist loads normally reserved for the next higher crane class. Safety is also enhanced by providing greater comfort for the crane operator. The cabin is 220mm wider than other standard cabins on the market. Both crane models are powered by a Cummins diesel engine which meets all current emissions regulations. These advancements will certainly increase return on investment for many lifters.” The Hup 40-30 has a 40m jib and boasts 16 configurations, which is unique to this category of self-erecting cranes, enabling it to be easily adapted for a range of job site applications. With a maximum capacity of 4t, it can lift 1t at its jib end of 40m. The new Hup 40-30 features a telescopic mast for a

The Spanish company’s HGY-25 gaspowered generator’s estimated service life of 30,000 hours until overhaul means that it only requires two services throughout its entire working life, which the company claims is much longer than the average life of equipment of the same size. The HGY-25 is available in 50Hz and 60Hz configurations and delivers 28kVA of continuous operation power. According to Himoinsa, the natural gas powered set with maintenance intervals up to 40 times longer than a gas generator set of the same size, is a suitable model for isolated and difficult-to-reach areas that require a continuous supply of clean power, like gas pipelines in remote areas, making it especially useful for the oil and gas sector, with oil installations in remote areas. The new XDR3 range incorporates three key innovations, which together increase tyre life by a minimum of 10% compared to its predecessor the XDR2. ith the road and infrastructure sector providing projects that are continuing apace in the GCC region, cold planers are among the categories of equipment for which the market continues to see a demand. And global equipment giant Caterpillar aims to tighten its grip on this sector in the region with two new models – the PM620 and PM622 cold planers. The American heavyweight already has four models of its cold planer lineup available in the region through its dealer Al-Bahar. While the PM102 is available in both track and wheel versions, two versions of the PM200 are also available, the 2.0 and 2.2, which are differentiated by the cutting width they offer. “Mainly, the demand for milling machines comes from road construction and maintenance contractors. A cold planer is a road maintenance machine and the main applications for this equipment are full-depth milling, profiling and surface texturing. it can be used for both highway and urban street making,” says Mamoun T. Mutair, product manager, Building Construction & Paving, Al-Bahar. With the new introductions, Cat is upgrading its model range in the region with two high-production, highly manoeuvrable, halflane milling machines that perform controlled full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass. The two models are powered by Cat’s C18 ACERT engine, which meets regional emission standards in all parts of the globe, as required, with minor modifications. The engine that makes this flexibility of meeting emissions requirements possible is a turbocharged, six-cylinder diesel that provides 630hp of gross power. The C18 ACERT engine is iso-mounted to reduce vibration and increase operator comfort.

An Automatic Engine Speed Control feature allows the engine to optimise output to match the load, reducing excessive fuel consumption and wear. According to Caterpillar, the turbocharged air-to-air after-cooling system provides high horsepower with increased response-time while keeping exhaust temperatures low, which generates significant improvements in airflow. This increases efficiency and reduces emissions. The cooling system provides cool intake air in order to maximise fuel efficiency and minimise emissions. An on-demand variable speed fan draws ambient air from the top of the engine hood and through the cooling package, keeping the engine compartment cool. Heated air exits from the rear of the machine, directed away from the operator’s station for greater operator comfort. The operating weight for the PM620 is approximately 33.3t and for the PM622 33.9t, while their transport weights are approximately 29.4t and 30t respectively. The machines are fully hydrostatically driven by two variable displacement propel pumps supplying oil to variable displacement motors on each track. Drive motors are piston-type and automatically control displacement to provide maximum torque for work or greater speed for moving around the job site. A propel lever/steering joystick provides infinite control of the travel speed within the range. Among the several automated functions that simplify operations are the ‘hold’ button in the operator’s platform that stops the machine and pauses various functions while making truck interchanges or job stops. It returns to previous working speed and functions when deactivated.

Caterpillar hopes to continue its success in the region’s cold planer space with two new models, both of which offer superior cutting performance.

Proven Cat design The drive tracks are based on durable, proven Caterpillar designs and components. Track tension automatically adjusts to ensure optimum operation. Track assemblies are 1781mm long, 305mm wide and feature replaceable, bolt-on polyurethane track pads for long service life Four-mode steering is standard, with an electronic control module processing input from sensors on the front and rear tracks along with input from the steering selector controls. In the coordinated mode, the inside turning radius is a tight 2.00m for manoeuvrability in confined spaces. The operator’s station features an ergonomic layout of dual operating controls, including joystick steering/propel lever, upper conveyor controls and rear track steering controls. A touchscreen display is visible day or night, and keypads are backlit for low light operations. The touchscreen display also provides video feed from the optional remote cameras in the front and rear of the machines. An optional second display can provide an additional monitor for machine functions. The computerised monitoring system includes several electronic control modules (ECMs) that constantly monitor system pressures and engine conditions with multiple modes of operation.

The cutting chamber features a design that streamlines material flow, reduces wear on the chamber, and has enhanced flush cutting capability. Side plates move via independent hydraulic cylinders that are equipped with position sensors, ensuring that the plates float at the proper level, eliminating binding. A hydraulically operated anti-slab device prevents slabbing of the road surface. It also protects the collecting conveyor and ensures an optimum discharge opening to the rotor chamber, which houses the rotor drive system featuring a dry clutch driving a planetary gear reducer. The clutch is coupled to the engine and is hydraulically actuated by the operator’s keypad controls. Three rotor speeds are available to match the best rotor RPM and torque with the job conditions, and are controlled electronically from the operator’s keypad. Automatic Load Control is a standard feature to enhance machine productivity while milling. An ECM continually evaluates engine rpm and controls propel speed as required to maintain peak performance for

maximum output. The PM620 is equipped with a 2010mm-wide high-production rotor while the PM622 has a 2235m-wide one. The maximum cutting depth is 330mm. The rotors are equipped with three-piece, quick-release tool holders and carbidetipped cutting bits in a chevron pattern for maximum breakout force. Optional Cat Diamond Bits make for greater cutting performance. Caterpillar says the optional Cat Diamond Bits last up to 80 times longer than conventional carbide bits, extending periods between stops for bit maintenance. Cat Diamond Bits are sharper than conventional carbide bits, reducing drag on the cutting system and allowing the machine to cut at faster speeds, increasing production. “Customers mainly look for higher engine power, suitable cutting widths and depths, reliable and easy-to-change bits and excellent manoeuvrability in a cold planer - along with high productivity,” says Mutair from Al-Bahar. “The PM620 and PM622 offer all these and much more.” Clutter-free conveyor The collecting conveyor is driven by a hightorque hydraulic motor. A large chamber discharge opening clears out the cutter box quickly to maintain high production. The seamless collector belt features 32mm high cleats and is 850mm wide to clear out the cutter box effectively and control fine particles. A standard water spray system lubricates the conveyor belt and helps control dust. A centrifugal pump supplies water to spray nozzles in the cutting chamber, which focus water spray in a flat fan pattern to the rotor for better cooling of cutting bits.

The system features an automatic function that operates only when the rotor is engaged and machine is moving forward, which conserves water. The system is triple filtered, and includes a gauge to monitor water pressure, a low water level indicator and water control valves to conserve water. The 3400l water tank can be filled from standard wide fill openings on the top of the machine or the standard ground level port at the rear. There is also an optional side fill port, enabling filling while the machine is operating. An additional optional water spray system can be fitted for greater lubrication. The hydraulically controlled front loading conveyor features height adjustments for raising and lowering and two cylinders for a 60-degree swing to the left and right of centre that can be controlled from the operator’s station or at two ground level control stations. It is equipped with upper aluminum covers for added protection against material spills and blowing of fine materials. The loading conveyor can also be hydraulically folded downwards, reducing machine dimensions during transportation. “Some of the features required to make cold planers perform effectively under the harsh conditions of the Middle East are high capacity cooling systems, high ambient hydraulic oil, high pressure wash down systems and additional water spray features,” says Mutair. “The PM620 and PM622 offer all of these features and also peovide additonal ones, making them thoroughly robust and suitable for the work environment in the region,” he adds. Cat’s customary long service intervals reduce owning and operating costs, with engine oil service every 500 hours and hydraulic oil service every 3,000 hours if oil sampling is not conducted and up to 6,000 hours with scheduled oil sampling. The auxiliary electric pump drive provides an emergency hydraulic flow that allows a disabled machine to manage some machine functions and be towed away from the work area to ensure that work is not disrupted. Cat’s Product Link provides information about the location, utilisation and condition of the equipment, and streamlines diagnostic efforts, maintenance scheduling and costs with flow of machine data between dealer and customer. And then of course there is the back-up provided by the dealer, which has always been a hallmark of Caterpillar’s customer package. As Al-Bahar’s Mutair says: “We have always been known for our unmatched after sales support.
