A rAre Achievement In a part of the world as young as the GCC, any institution that has lasted more than a few decades is an oddity. When some of the region’s countries themselves are barely older than that - and their oil-fuelled economic prosperity that spawned thousands of kilometres of multilane highways snaking around futuristic skylines a very late-twentieth century phenomenon - it is near-unimaginable to find an equipment company that predates the big boom in the region. Which is why Genavco’s fiftieth anniversary this year is a rare and astonishing achievement. Considering that the UAE itself only came into being in 1971, the Dubai-headquartered machinery, equipment and transport solutions major’s creation in 1967 speaks of great vision and foresight about the region’s future prospects at a time when it may have been laughed off - and the strength of conviction to see that vision through. For this the Juma Al Majid Group, of which Genavco is a part, needs to be congratulated. Kudos should also go to the Genavco family for the way they have set the standards in the equipment dealership sphere in the region for half a century. And a family is what Genavco describes itself as. In this issue, senior executives from the company – many with more than two decades of service – tell CMME about the journey and what has made Genavco stand out in terms of its sustained success for five decades. Many things have changed with the passage of time, including the equipment and technologies the company deals in as well as the breadth of its operations. What has remained constant, however, are its core values of teamwork, customer-orientation and being one family.
Speaking of the passage of time, another year is coming to its end and we examine seven important highlights of 2017. It’s been a year that set some important precedents – such as the increasing role of technology and the internet in the world of construction and equipment - which we predict will gain importance in the times ahead. We also shine the spotlight on new kit launched by Terex Cranes and Wirtgen. While the Demag AC 45 City is as compact a mobile crane as they come, Wirtgen’s W 210 XP is on the opposite end of the size spectrum, being a large road milling machine yet with a design that allows easy transportation. Large and small are both a part of JLG’s model range, its sales director for the region tells CMME elsewhere in this issue. The powered access major already leads the Middle East’s aerial work platform sector and is consolidating its position further with its Ultra Boom series and customer support. CMME would like to thank all its readers, partners and associates in the equipment fraternity who have helped us make it an enjoyable year of bringing you news and insights into the sector. We wish you all the best for the holiday season and look forward to engaging with you again in the New Year!

Congratulations on hosting the 2017 edition of the Middle East Consultant Awards! I was reading the news story you shared about the winning companies this year, and the DEWA Solar Innovation Centre project caught my eye. I have to admit that I was not aware of this project but now, having read about it on DEWA’s website, I was very impressed with what I saw. The structure looks unlike any other building we have in the UAE, and the sustainable elements it is equipped with are amazing. I am proud that the authorities in Dubai are rolling out initiatives like this and I hope that this project helps to inspire other companies and government authorities in the region to push their sustainable agendas. At the same time, I also believe that, globally, we are still only scratching the surface of sustainability, through the use of innovative new solutions and technology. There are technologies such as self-cleaning glass and much more in the works that will help us to be even more sustainable across our cities and especially in the Middle East, where cleaning buildings requires the use of manpower, water and other resources. Personally, I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Safelift adds Skyjack booms and scissors Powered access heavyweight Skyjack recently filled a tall order with Abu Dhabi rental company Safelift LLC, which added a number of Skyjack products to its line-up. The order comprised Skyjack’s SJ66 T straight booms SJ46 AJ and SJ63 AJ, the recently launched SJ85 AJ articulated booms and a range of DC electric scissors. “We selected Skyjack because they produce a range of strong and robust products which are ideal for the region,” said Wayne Taylor, managing director, Safelift. “[They] offer a good list of features, including the latest technology in secondary guarding that some of our customers are now requesting as standard.” Skyjack said its new SJ85 AJ provides a class-leading raised platform of 25.91m combined with a 17.07m reach. The unit
offers the flexibility of an articulating boom and the speed of a straight boom, allowing the operator to cycle between maximum platform height and ground level without lowering the riser section. For superior traction, Skyjack booms have an axle-based 4WD system and selectable rear differential lock. Another selling point for Safelift was the range of features included in Skyjack’s products. “[They] provide an excellent return on investment,” said Taylor. The order was delivered to Safelift’s new facility in Al Quoz, Dubai, and enables Safelift to expand its offerings, ensuring quicker turnaround times for customers. “This first significant investment in a new fleet, and the recent opening of our new facility in Dubai, shows our commitment to customers going into 2018 and beyond,” said Taylor.

a complaint filed by Cat on October 26 that is nearly identical to one filed by Wirtgen against Cat in July. The products at issue in the investigation are road construction machines, including road milling and road paving machines. In their complaint, Caterpillar Inc and Caterpillar paving products, Inc allege that the german manufacturer violated the Tariff Act of 1930 by importing into the Us and selling certain road construction machines that infringe patents held by Caterpillar. The Act prohibits unfair acts and unfair methods of competition involving imports by making importation and sale of infringing goods in the Us illegal. Caterpillar is requesting that the commission issue a limited exclusion and cease and desist order, similar to what Wirtgen seeks in its complaint.

Intermat 2018 to focus on EMEA market
The triennial Intermat exhibition in Paris, one of the biggest events in the global construction and equipment sector, is returning April 23-28 next year with a focus on the Europe, Middle East and Asia (EMEA) market. Isabelle Alfano, the new director of Intermat, said she has chosen to put greater focus on the EMEA region
and plans to attract more visitors from these areas by actively promoting the show in the region through tours and roadshows. “The way we do it is, rather than having press conferences, we have meetings with the industry and we gather journalists, contractors, federations and exhibitors, and we
explain what Intermat will be,” Alfano said. “We also have speakers at these events who give content and perspective to these different countries, explaining what the market will be like over the coming years.” Intermat 2018 will be divided into four different activities – Earthmoving & Demolition; Roads, Minerals &
Foundations; Lifting, Handling & Transportation; and Buildings & Concrete Sector – to make it easier for visitors to navigate the exhibition, enabling them to identify the areas they are interested in. Another first is the Construction Observatory, a comprehensive study of 150 construction projects which will be given out during Intermat’s promotional tour and during the event. “It is a study of 12 different countries in the EMEA region, to give indicators of how the economy is going in these different countries [and] how the construction sector is organised. It is a study of the big construction projects in these countries – both current and upcoming projects to 2025/2030,” Alfano said.
NeW 3M FIre, WATer TApes 3M, has developed new tapes that provide builders with an easier way to stop fire, water, smoke and sound. The 3M Fire and Water Barrier Tape (FWBT) is described as the first of its kind and contains self-adhered membranes that provide a tough, elastomeric seal for fire protection, watertightness and sound deadening.

C
lose on the heels of its recent entry into the Middle East market with permanent premises in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone, Euro Auctions conducted its first ever on-site sale in the region in September at the 91,000sqm facility. Since then, the global auctioneer of industrial plant, construction equipment and machinery has brought several other facilities to its clients in the region, most notably its first ever timed auction – an online sale with the hammer day on December 7 to conclude all transactions. The timed auction, coordinated via its new Hong Kong operations, saw more than 200 consignments already assigned to it by early November by construction, rental and financial institutions in the region. Significant early interest was seen by bidders in Asia and Australasia, as well as from as far away as Scandinavia and the Americas, Euro Auctions said. “Our first physical Hong Kong sale in September was a resounding success, with almost 500 bidders
from over 40 countries registering for the event and over 70% of all winning bids being placed via the internet,” said Jonnie Keys, Euro Auctions’ commercial manager. “Organising our first ever timed auction was therefore the logical next step in our development, as it means equipment doesn’t have to be transported to a central location and busy buyers also have more flexibility in pre placing bids. Plus, they don’t have to attend on the day.” Timed auctions differ from the established Euro Auctions sales as there is no live, physical auction to attend; instead bidders submit their maximum bid in advance, he explained. As far as physical auctions are concerned, however, Euro Auctions has announced its second one to take place at its Dubai site on December 11. This follows from the success of its inaugural auction, which saw almost 500 lots sold and as many bidders registered. “We were delighted with the support we received for our first sale, and since then we have been extremely pleased with the level of interest shown for this upcoming sale. Due to the success of the first sale,
we have seen more and more consigners coming on board, placing their trust in us to get a fair price for their equipment,” said Keys. “We expect this second sale to be even bigger and better than the first, with a wider range of equipment available, including some great examples of low-hours and unused equipment, with more countries involved in buying and selling.” New and used construction equipment from major brands including Komatsu, Cat, Doosan, Hitachi and Volvo have already been consigned to this auction, he said. The growing inventory includes many lowhours quality used and new equipment, with key lots comprising excavators of all sizes, mobile cranes, loaders, rollers and access platforms. “Separate bidder numbers are required to bid on any lot at each event, which can be obtained by registering through the Euro Auctions website,” Keys explained. Bidders can then take part in one of three ways: onsite at the auction site; online via Euro Auctions’ free internet bidding service; or by placing a pre-bid.

A
fleet of 13 Potain tower cranes is helping to build a new residential and commercial district in Regensburg, Germany. The new district, named Das Dornberg, is only miles from Regensburg’s historic old town, which has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage city since 2006. The cranes are currently working on the first construction phase, in which they are transforming a 250,000sqm railway area. One selferecting crane and 12 top-slewing cranes, with load capacities up to 10t and jib radii up to 65m, are working at the site. There are a Potain GTMR 386, six MDT 218s, one MDT 192, three MDT 178s, one MDT 162 and one MD 120. Due to the job-site’s tight quarters, the cranes are working extremely closely to each other. Plattling-based Moser Baumaschinen, the company handling the lifting work, chose the fleet of topless cranes to enable operators to swivel the cranes’ jibs over one another and lift in conjunction. The company also chose the cranes for their simple and quick assembly, which reduces set-up time and therefore keeps construction costs low. Moser Baumaschinen provided
the cranes to several contractors handling lifting work on the project: Neumarkt-based Max Bogl, Wermelskirchen-based August Schmidt, and a consortium that consists of Regensburg-based Guggenberger Bau and Dietlikon, Switzerland-based Implenia Hochbau. Explaining the choice, Mario Moser, one of the managing directors of Moser Baumaschinen, said: “We have been a Potain partner for many years, and through our relationship with such an innovative crane manufacturer, we are able to supply large construction sites with our rental cranes. The Potain top-slewing cranes in particular are quick to assemble, powerful and have very little downtime. It was our large range of topless cranes, including the MDT 218, that helped us win the Dornberg contract. In the future, we are also planning to invest more in our top-slewing crane fleet.” Moser Baumaschinen has been selling and leasing cranes and machines for the construction industry for more than 45 years. Its rental crane fleet currently comprises 375 Potain cranes, 75 of which are top-slewing. With four locations in southern Germany, Moser serves customers all over Bavaria.

With the increasing proliferation and success of online auctions WorldWide, it’s only a matter of time before the medium gains more ground in the gcc to sell used plant and equipment, says patrick ditcham, head of machinery and business assets at cavendish maxWell
M
ost people in the GCC are fully aware of what an auction is nowadays, with regular sales of contractors’ plants, number plates, vehicles, camels and fine art held across the region. However, the online auction is a relatively new concept in the region. At a traditional auction, prospective bidders and purchasers gather in an auction room or venue, and the auctioneer standing at the front conducts the bidding. Once there is one person left holding the highest bid, the lot is ‘knocked down’ to conclude the sale. These traditional auctions have been carried out for centuries all over the world. As technology has advanced, however, and more people become comfortable carrying out transactions over the internet, virtual auctions have begun gaining ground as a viable way to sell assets. Online auctions are carried out similarly to traditional auctions, with the exception that the auction room is a virtual room and the
15 Online auctions are similar to traditional ones with the exception that the venue is a virtual room and the bidding is done by strokes on a computer keyboard.
“Online auctioneers offer a very viable alternative to the traditional live auctions, as second-hand dealers can broaden their reach to a global audience of buyers. The costs involved in setting up the sale can be substantially reduced… thus offering better returns to vendors”
bidding is done by keystrokes on a computer keyboard. The result is the same, with prospective purchasers bidding against each other until the incremental bids reach a limit with one bidder remaining. The advantage is that, in theory, bidders can be anywhere in the world, as long as they have internet connections. This means lots are offered for sale to a far larger audience. Many auction houses in the UAE have already embraced the online platform, but mainly for automobiles and number plates. The main construction plant continues to be sold in the traditional way, with Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers and now Euro Auctions carrying out regular sales in Dubai’s Jebel Ali freezone. Ritchie Bros. recently announced the relaunch of Iron Planet, the online auction platform it bought several months ago. In addition, Australian industrial plant auctioneer Grays has organised an online auction with assets sourced from the Gulf region. The success of these new online auctions in the region remains to be seen. However, in Europe and North America they are already well established and are now starting to eclipse live auctions in certain sectors. In fact, very few things cannot be found for sale at online auctions, which offer industrial and process plants as well as factory equipment. I was recently sent details of a two-day online auction of machine tools and metal fabrication equipment in Abu Dhabi. To my knowledge, this is the first auction of this kind to be held in the UAE. From personal experience, sellers in this region have resisted attempts to carry out sales by this method, in order to avoid the unknown, as they prefer to deal with second-hand dealers and traders of industrial machinery. However, their stance is starting to change, as the above-mentioned sales only go to prove. As confidence grows in this type of sale method, we will hopefully see far more auctions of a whole range of assets in the near future. Online auctioneers offer a very viable alternative to traditional live auctions, as second-hand dealers can broaden their reach to a global audience of buyers. The costs involved in setting up the sale can be substantially reduced in certain cases of online sales, thus offering better returns to vendors. Does this mean we are witnessing the demise of live auctions? For the time being, live auctions and online auctions can live side by side, but when you consider that even assets such as whole dairy sites have been successfully sold online, it will not be too long before online auctions start to gain more ground throughout the GCC.

eaching the top, they say, is easier than staying there. In any field one cares to look at, many have reached the top but only a few have managed to entrench themselves in that position. This holds as true for individuals as for companies, and as much in the world of electronics as equipment. One such rare case of an entrenched leader in the Middle East’s equipment sector is powered access specialist JLG. JLG produces a range of aerial work platforms (AWP) and telehandlers designed to fit the requirements of end users as well as of rental company customers, who are some of its biggest buyers. The total volumes they buy from the company in the Middle East has made JLG the market leader in terms of numbers in the region for a while, says Ian Hume, the company’s sales director for emerging markets. “We can definitely say that we are the No.1 in market share in the Middle East as a whole. In some markets in the region, it’s a very close fight with some of our competitors and in others, such as the UAE, we are simply dominant with a very strong market share,” Hume tells CMME. “Why are we at the top? There are a number of reasons for that. Firstly, we have the best mix of diverse products in our extensive range of booms and access equipment, compact crawlers and telehandlers. So we have larger product offering for rental companies, such as Manlift and Rapid Access, which are generally our top customers.” Another reason for JLG’s popularity is the way its products retain their value. “It’s great to have a machine that works for the customers and one that they like. This gets us to the top of the market. But
17 Along with the Ultra Boom series that is seeing high utilisation due to its long reach, JLG’s range also features articulating boom lifts and scissors in multiple sizes.

what happens when a customer wants to dispose of the asset after a certain amount of years? That’s where JLG is a long way ahead of the competition. Even after you’ve had a JLG product for, let’s say 10-15 years, which is not uncommon in this market, you still get a good residual market value.” The crux of the matter, though, is not the quality of the products but what goes into achieving that quality. Hume says customers are JLG’s greatest priority and it is committed to understanding their challenges. To do this, JLG listens to feedback on product performance, reliability and service costs, using this information for developing new models and improving existing ones. Several of its products demonstrate this. JLG’s 3614RS and 4017RS telehandlers, which are aimed at the rental market - with the RS in the products’ names standing for rental series or spec - were developed as a result of working closely with rental companies. So was the company’s Ultra Boom series of tall telescopic work platforms. “We were present in the Middle East through dealers for a long time, but since we established our own regional operation here in 2008, the
growth has been in the large boom segment, driven by demand from the construction, and oil & gas sectors,” Hume says. “We deliver the powerful, versatile equipment that they need, along with unsurpassed training and service, because we have a responsibility to be more than a manufacturing company. We are a partner in our customers’ success, reaching out worldwide to enable performance, boost productivity, ensure uptime and support forward progress.” Not only does JLG provide superior product quality, it also concentrates on excellence in quality service and delivery to its distributors and customers through teamwork and dedication, Hume explains. The results of this philosophy are easy to see. “We are seeing big uptakes in most of the region for JLG products. In Qatar, our Ultra Booms are building stadiums for the world cup and our sales are also growing in Kuwait with a new clean energy project there. In general, there is a lot of positivity. In the UAE, Dubai’s Expo 2020 projects will take on around 2,000 JLG products next year. And in Saudi, while the going is tough at the moment, we are still seeing some interest and there is still

19 some work for our machines. If you ask any of our customers, the biggest challenge is not keeping JLG equipment up and running, but it’s generally how to collect their payments.” What gives JLG products the edge over the competition is the competitive advantage they bring to owners and users in the field. “We constantly invest in new technologies. Once a customer has purchased a JLG, it’s our ability to support products in the field through focused service and parts back-up that sets us apart. When allied with our marketleading diagnostics programmes, clients see an immediate advantage,” Hume says. JLG’s telehandlers, for example, have features catering specifically to the Middle East) market, such as straightforward service and maintenance requirements, desirable in any fleet. Other features include cabs that can be cleaned by a pressure-washer before the machines’ next job and easy access to the external telescope cylinder and electronics placed outside rather than inside the boom. A single compensation lift cylinder requires less service and has fewer leak points, and JLG’s telehandlers are also built with Dana axles and transmissions as well as Deutz
engines. Also, the boom technology uses a four-plate box design, further contributing to the machine’s reliability. Transportability is also high, though Hume notes that this is less important in the Middle East, since on-road weight restrictions are more lenient than in Europe. For rental companies and end users in the Middle East, the main attractions of JLG machines, such as the RS series, is that they are easier to service and easier to operate, and have a lower acquisition cost. In AWPs both JLG’s articulating models as well as the telescopic Ultra Boom series have found favour with users. “We recently sold some of our largest machines to a Kuwait construction company. They chose the 1500 AJP, which is among the largest articulated booms in the world, because it is the perfect machine for large pipeline and power station projects as you can set up the machine a decent distance away and still get in right inside the project to do the work,” Hume says. “I think we will see an increase in the numbers of our large machines, like this 1850 Ultra Boom, the largest one in the world. That market segment will continue to grow. And it is backed by the regulations that come in from the government as well as safety regulations brought in by contractors that really drive the industry, especially in UAE.” JLG is also known for its safety features, and Hume explains: “All our booms have our Skyguard system fitted as standard. It is now compulsory at a lot of sites and there’s been a big transition in the last 12 months where companies like Saudi Aramco changed their regulations to require all machines to have the safety feature.” Chief among Skyguard’s safety functions is a collision avoidance system that senses when the platform is about to hit something and either stops its movement or retracts it from the danger area automatically. Another JLG innovation contributing to its machines’ popularity is the analyser, a built-in diagnostic tool that provides a gateway to look into the machine for faults. “It’s like a built-in diagnostics tool. You plug it in and it zeros in on the area where the fault lies, giving you the information on its screen. With technicians present on-site at most large jobs, they read the fault code and know immediately what to do. There is no longer the need to bring the whole machine back to the workshop,” Hume explains. “We will continue our regional growth programme while supporting our clients to ensure they get the best value from JLG. Our aim is to see more of our orange booms dot the skies of the region in the future.”

ROUND-UP DECEMBER 2017
The year IN reVIeW
CMME presents seven notable trends and happenings that characterised the construction equipment sector in 2017, with their effects set to shape the future
T
he biggest impact on the global construction and machinery sector this year has come from technology. Whether it is the increasing proliferation of online sales, the introduction of drones into the construction machinery landscape or the huge gains in efficiency that digital machine controls are providing users – technology has started transforming the construction landscape irrevocably. While the global impact of technology has been mirrored in every local market, closer to home some other peculiarities have also emerged, such as the way compact and mini equipment is making inroads into the Middle East market on the back of a gradual yet ongoing maturing process. Also apparent is how some brands have seized the year, either through increasing sales or by simply cementing their presence after a long absence. As 2017 draws to a close, CMME brings you our seven highlights of the year, encompassing broader market trends and a narrower focus on brands that stood out in a regional context.

Buyers are increasingly turning to the internet to purchase used equipment. In 2016, auction giant Ritchie Bros. sold approximately $2.1bn of equipment, trucks and other assets to online buyers at Ritchie Bros. auctions and through EquipmentOne, the company’s online equipment marketplace. This is a 10% increase compared to 2015, and is the highest amount ever sold online in one year. Sales to online buyers represented 49% of sales for Ritchie Bros. in 2016. Newcomer IronDirect is betting that equipment buyers will buy new Chinese machines online and service them locally. Also selling on IronDirect’s site are Paladin attachments, Berco undercarriages and Magni telehandlers. In the Middle East, the growing popularity of online sales has led to the entrance of new players in the sector, such as Euro Auctions. The Leeds, UK-headquartered company, which started out as a brick-and-mortar auctioneer, now offers a comprehensive range of online offerings. Commercial manager Jonnie Keys says that in the latest Euro

Auctions sale, more than 70% of the winning bids were placed online. Seeing the popularity of the online auction, the company has introduced its first ever timed auction – an online sale with the hammer day on December 7 to conclude all transactions. “Organising our first ever timed auction was the logical next step in our development, as it means equipment doesn’t have to be transported to a central location and busy buyers also have more flexibility in pre placing bids. Plus, they don’t have to attend on the day.” Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, Amazon continues to disrupt the world of brick-and-mortar retail with expansion into machinery sales, offering not only spare parts and attachments but also the equipment itself in some cases. With Amazon also offering same-day delivery services of spare parts and smaller attachment items, dealers need to consider how the online retailer is raising expectations among all consumers, and how this could impact their businesses, with only a matter of time before its reach covers the whole global economy.

Amid a general stagnation in the uptake of new equipment in the Middle East, this year has been a good one for Terex Cranes. Early in the year, Kuwait’s Integrated Logistics Company (ILC) bought 31 cranes from across Terex Cranes’ all-terrain and Demag crawler crane portfolio. The February delivery comprised a new Demag CC 3800-1 crawler crane, 20 Terex AC 100/4L all-terrain cranes and 10 Terex Explorer 5600 all-terrain cranes. In April, Bahrain crane services provider Sarens NASS Middle East WLL Group expanded its all-terrain crane fleet with 15 new Demag AC-130-5 all-terrain cranes. Demag all-terrain cranes, this time comprising two AC 130-5, four AC 160-5 and six AC 300-6 models. Terex struck it rich again two months later, with an order for five new cranes from Kuwaiti equipment leasing and logistics supplier Jassim Transport & Stevedoring Co KSCC (JTC). The order comprised one Demag AC 250-6 and four Demag AC 100-4L all-terrain cranes. The same month, the company again found favour in the region with Australian company Bothar Boring & Tunnelling, which expanded its Middle East operations by adding three all-terrain cranes to its fleet – a Demag AC 5008 and AC 100-4L, and a Terex Explorer 5600. Terex Cranes rounded off the year in style last month when Kuwait’s
JTC once again expanded its fleet with a new nine-axle, 700t capacity class Demag AC 700-9 all-terrain crane, one of Demag’s largest mobile cranes. Terex Cranes’ total sales in the region this year come to 67 units, with Demag contributing 56 of them, proving the traditional popularity of the brand. The most popular model was the Demag AC 100/4L, which sold 25 units. The popularity of the four-axle 100t-class crane hints at the fact that small lifting jobs are still available in the market, which can be attributed to ongoing road and infrastructure projects in several countries in the region. The common refrain of all buyers is that behind their preference for Terex Cranes is the company’s product quality and service back-up.

t was the late 1990s. A customer of the General Navigation and Commerce Company – or Genavco, to use its more popular name – was involved in a road-building project in a remote location in the UAE using Hamm equipment supplied by the Dubai-based dealer. Word came in late one Thursday evening at Genavco offices that a very heavy component of the machine had malfunctioned, bringing it to a stop and halting an important time-bound infrastructure project in its tracks. “Our team jumped into action right away,” says Basher Gharaibeh, division manager, Plant Service, who’s been with Genavco for 22 years. “The part in question was so heavy that it normally required to be shipped rather than flown out to its destination, requiring days to arrive. Forgetting their weekend, a dedicated team of service personnel liaised non-stop with our principal’s factory in Germany and, using our influence and good offices with them, we were able to get them to send it via DHL the very next day – all 1.5 tonnes of it. “Then our team worked through the night, then the whole of the next day and well into the next night, non-stop, to receive the component, take it to the job-site and then install it in the stalled machine, enabling work to begin at the earliest. This is the Genavco DNA – dedication to the customer and leaving no stone unturned to keep his work going. It is the foundation on which we have built the organisation and the corner stone on which it still stands today.” But dedication is not the only mantra in building an institution of the likes of Genavco, which has become a brand name in itself in the region’s machinery and equipment sphere, with its very presence reassuring customers that they are in the best hands. Another very important mantra is teamwork, Asif Khan, general manager, Plant & Equipment, Genavco, tells CMME. CMME is at Genavco’s head office in Dubai, in a round table with its senior management personnel, each of whom head a vertical in the company that is celebrating 50 years of being in business this year. Ever since its inception in 1967, the Juma Al Majid Group company has been associated with some of the most prestigious and wellknown brands and projects in the UAE. In fact, some of the most iconic landmarks of the country all bear Genavco’s stamp in some way. “The list of projects in the UAE to which we have supplied machines

reads like an honour roll of the most important facilities in the country,” says Khan. “Whether it’s Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, both of Dubai’s airports, Dubai Autodrome or the Dubai Metro, the landmarks of the city have all been touched by equipment that Genavco has supplied.” Genavco has also made its mark in the rest of the UAE. “The Yas Marina F1 Circuit, the Abu Dhabi international airport, the new Mafraq-Ghuwaifat highway - the list goes on.” Speaking about the organisational culture and what has sustained it for the past 50 years, Khan says: “The most distinctive feature about Genavco, which we who work here well know, is that it is like a family. We not only work together, but we are also very close to each other and share the joys and sorrows of every member of the Genavco family. If somebody needs support in any way, they will find people reaching out to them individually and collectively to help solve their problems. This is one of the strengths of Genavco.” Investing in its people Walid K Ismail, general manager, Spare Parts, and a 30-year veteran of the company, adds: “Professionally, we invest a lot in our staff all the time, and I am myself an example of this. Just months into my job at Genavco I was sent to the US for training for an entire month. Soon after I came back I was sent to the UK again for a month on another training. This was back in the 1980s when such practices were unusual. Upskilling continues to set Genavco apart. “The difference it makes is that once a customer starts dealing with Genavco, he does not go back. We have customers who have been with us all of the 50 years since the company began. I personally have numerous customers who I started dealing with when I first joined Genavco 30 years ago and they have remained with us all this while. This would not have happened if we were not doing a good job.” As one of the newest members of the management team, Anton Du Plessis is someone who can testify that the old practice of investing in the company’s human capital has not changed with time. “I’ve only been here a little over two years and I can say that whatever the division you’re working in at Genavco, you’ll find that there is support and investment across the board in our personnel,” says Du Plessis, general manager for Genavco’s Isuzu division, which is of huge importance to the company. “Isuzu has emerged as one of the biggest brands that Genavco represents and the company’s backbone in terms of revenue. It’s the cash cow, if I may call it that. Genavco was stated in 1967. The UAE became a nation

in 1971. So we are only slightly older than the UAE. But, critically, together with our equipment division and Isuzu, we’ve helped to build the nation. And we’d like to think that we’ve contributed to taking the UAE where it is today,” he says. “But all of that is not possible if you don’t move the country by road. All the deliveries and distribution happens on trucks. And Isuzu is key in this particular area. We are among the top-2 truck brands in the UAE and we’re growing our market share rapidly. When we approach new customers, what stands out is the name Genavco. People know Genavco and then they see Isuzu; it’s not the other way around.” The member of the management team with the longest tenure in the company is Nazih Dwikat, division manager, Vehicle Service. Recounting his journey, he observes: “In more than 30 years with Genavco I have seen technology move forward very rapidly. This has challenged us to constantly adapt and upskill to be able to offer the best to our customers, and we have always done so. “We started with a workshop for walk-in service but we have constantly introduced new facilities, and today we have field and mobile service teams to serve customers off-site. We’ve also expanded our workforce with more technicians and engineers.” Service is also the cornerstone of Genavco’s

machinery and equipment division. A team of expert hands has been built up over the years and is always on stand-by to attend to customers’ needs, says Gharaibeh. “In our workshop we have around 55 technicians. We believe that while sales and marketing brings in the customer for the first sale, it is service that retains him and brings in subsequent sales. Without our support, a customer would not come back for repeat purchase, no matter how good the machine and how sweet the initial deal be got on it,” Gharaibeh explains. “In Genavco, we work in perfect teamwork with sales, service and spare parts and our aim is to make our customers happy. We are working with our customers as a partner, not as a seller. We have always tried to establish long-term relationships with them, winning their confidence by becoming their trusted advisers. Very often, we ignore what will be of financial benefit for Genavco and instead tell our customer about what will be of benefit for his operations, even though it may turn out to be less profitable for us. But we view our customer relationships from a long-term perspective and forfeiting the short-term gains for a long, trusted relationship always turns out more profitable for us, as well as being more beneficial to customers.” Another important aspect is Genavco’s
relationship with its principals and suppliers, which helps it serve and support customers faster and better. “These relationships with suppliers have been carefully nurtured for years, and we have been with some of our principals since the very beginning of our company and with many others for decades,” Gharaibeh adds. “Each and every new product or principal that comes to Genavco finds a very strong team, ready to learn and adapt. The investment in training in Genavco is unlimited and constant, as it is in the latest tools for the job. “As a testament to our dedication to quality, we only use genuine parts and processes as authorised by the brands we represent. If a customer asks us to put in a non-genuine part into his machine, we politely decline, asking him to get it done himself. We can then test it for him, but we will not install it ourselves.” Genavco is also extending its services in the entire region and even outside it, such as in Africa. The company has been asked several times by its principals to attend to urgent jobs in other GCC countries and also in Africa to support customers. “Not only does this prove how confident our principals are in our abilities, we have also

received massive appreciation from them for chipping in to help,” says Gharaibeh. “A very important part of our functioning is our training centre here in our Dubai premises. We conduct both in-house and out-house training and our principals also use the facility to train their dealers from across the region.” Another important aspect of an organisation is sound financial management, and Ahmad Farouq Manna, finance manager, says: “From a finance perspective I see Genavco mirroring the UAE economy. The country is stable and growing and has proven its ability to weather any financial adversity. It’s the same with Genavco, which is a stable and growing company and has survived everything that the market has thrown at it for 50 years.” A constant companion for most of those 50 years has been global lubricant heavyweight BP. Babar Ahmed, division manager for BP, says: “Our partnership with BP is from 1968, so it’s been a really long journey with the brand. We are extremely popular in the UAE automotive market. Also, we supply lubricants to the various machinery brands that Genavco represents, giving us a captive audience of some of the leading global names. “We are also proud that BP lubricants have been exclusively used in certain mega projects in the UAE, such as the Dubai Metro, to which we supplied lubricants

through one of our sub-contractors.” Pride in their performance remains one of the hallmarks of Genavco, adds Khan. “Genavco believes in carrying forward good practices and traditions. There is a great culture of learning and sharing knowledge. When I joined around 25 years ago, my superiors were Sharif Khalid and Mike Fisk, who are pillars in Genavco’s history and built the company up with their sweat and blood. I learnt enormously from them. I took charge of the equipment division when my predecessors retired. They laid the foundation and we are only carrying the company to the next level. And the generation that will take over from us will take it further up.” The vision of UAE business leader Juma Al Majid created and sustained Genavco and now his son Khalid Al Majid is taking that vision to new heights of success, Khan adds. “Genavco’s motto is ‘Your perfect partner’ and I consider this to be the mother of all institutions I have been associated with. The entire team shares my belief that Genavco is one of the best learning institutions you can get, with a nurturing environment for all to grow. For 50 years we have always been close to our customers and stood by them in their hour of need, and that’s how we have lived up to our motto of being the perfect partner, which we will continue to be in the future.

VolVo iNtRos miNi excaVatoR Why get it? improved fuel economy and operating range with operator comfort
New RaimoNdi flattop toweR cRaNe Why get it? Speedier Slewing, SmoothneSS and enhanced accuracy with enhanced ui Raimondi Cranes has announced its newest heavy-lifting tower crane, the flattop MRT234. The tower crane officially began shipping in September to fulfil agent pre-sell orders, and has now launched for wider purchasing, said the Italian tower crane specialist, which is owned by UAE-based KBW Investments. “We are thrilled to launch the MRT234 after months of preparation. Raimondi’s R&D team worked with various suppliers for four months to build the prototype, erected in beta in August 2017 at our headquarters in Italy. The final stage of testing took three months, including preassembly of the crane, evaluating many different types of configurations and all of the model’s structural tests,” said Domenico Ciano, technical director, Raimondi Cranes. The MRT234 has a maximum jib length of 70m and a maximum capacity of 12t with four falls configuration. At the maximum radius, it can lift 2.25t in Ultralift mode. Eight different jib length configurations,
from 70m to 28m, satisfy all needs in terms of specific jobsite configurations. The MRT234 may be equipped with two different hoisting winches: standard installed power of 45kW or the more powerful 55kW. Raimondi has also worked to increase the speeds of the slewing and trolley movements in the MRT234, both of which have been improved by approximately 30%. Smoothness of motion and heightening accuracy have also been enhanced, ultimately increasing productivity and reducing margin of error. The MRT234 integrates optimal mechanical, structural and electronic control design for increased productivity, safety, and better user-interface. Remarking on some of the MRT234’s design advancements, Ciano said: “Raimondi’s newest product is heavily geared towards user experience, and these UI/UX centric features pioneered by Silicon Valley’s technology companies, when applied to heavy lifting machinery result in a high-performance product that boasts extreme operator ease onsite.” SPECIFICATIONS

Volvo CE’s EC27D mini excavator improves fuel economy by 5% over its predecessor and offers a larger operating range with greater operator comfort. The 2.7t excavator has Volvo’s own D1.1A Tier 4 Final engine with passive regeneration. It features impressive lifting capacity and more than 4.3t of digging force. The Swedish major says that due to the precise matching of the engine to the Volvo hydraulics, the EC27D uses 5% less fuel and has 30% less horsepower than its predecessor while maintaining the same breakout and tear-out forces. The EC27D is a conventional radius machine and a complement to the ECR25D short-swing excavator with its similar size, but has greater lifting capacity and stability compared to the short swing model. John Comrie, product manager at Volvo CE says: “The EC27D is a great addition to the Volvo compact excavator line. Its size, stability and lifting capacity make it perfect for utility work and rental companies — it’s one machine that can do everything.” The EC27D features a ROPS/FOPS canopy or the optional Volvo Care Cab, which enhances operator control, comfort and productivity. With 360-degree visibility advanced ergonomics and excellent noise and vibration insulation, the cab reduces operator fatigue and improves productivity. The EC27D has many built-in features to maximise uptime and lower ownership cost, such as a single variable displacement pump that uses power from the engine only when needed, for optimum fuel efficiency.

GRoVe lauNches New all-teRRaiN taxi cRaNes Why get it: compact dimenSionS for uSe in tight SpaceS and beStin-claSS taxi load chart Manitowoc has introduced two new all-terrain cranes in the 90t and 80t class, the Grove GMK4090 and the GMK4080-2, for the global market. The cranes feature a modern, compact design with emphasis on roadability and manoeuvrability. They are built in response to customer demand for lightweight, flexible taxi cranes in the respective capacity classes, representing a generational upgrade over the previous GMK4080-1/GMK4100B, a popular all-terrain crane in Europe due to its versatility in applications, especially with rental companies. While the GMK4090 will be released globally, the GMK40802 will be available in the US market.
Andreas Cremer, global product director of Grove all-terrain cranes, said the two new cranes are essentially the same crane, but the latter carries less counterweight to match the load chart of its predecessor, the GMK4080-1/GMK4100B. “The GMK4090 has been designed with flexibility and manoeuvrability as main focuses,” he said. “With its best-in-class taxi load chart and compact footprint, this crane will be ideal for a variety of jobs, such as general construction and plant maintenance work. Various counterweight options also give it versatility in roading, which can increase efficiency and return on investment for many owners.” The GMK4090 offers a 51m, six-section MEGAFORM boom that uses Grove’s TWINLOCK pinning system. Boosting its overall reach is a 9/15 m bi-fold swing-away jib that can be extended with a 6m boom extension for a total jib length of 21m.
The GMK4090 can travel with a maximum 18.3t counterweight. Within the most widely prevalent per axle weight of 12t, it can transport up to 9.1t to the job site without the need for an additional transport truck. The result is a taxi crane with a strong capacity that can keep transport costs low, said the statement. The crane’s width of 2.55m gives it the compact dimensions to access and manoeuvre within tight job sites. It has a minimum tailswing of 3.53m so it stays within the maximum outrigger width. doosaN’s Reduced tail swiNG excaVatoR Why get it? Shorter tail Swing for flexible operation, verSatile worK modeS and optionS Doosan’s DX140LCR-5 15t reduced tail swing crawler excavator offers a shorter tail swing, allowing operators greater flexibility where space is at a premium without sacrificing performance. The excavator is designed for long life with an extra-sturdy frame and reinforced superstructure. It comes standard with permanently sealed and lubricated track links, and the workgroup bushings and hard-wear disks are designed for reliability as well as extended service intervals to increase uptime. Powered by a Perkins 1204F engine making 115.3hp at 2000rpm, the DX140LCR-5 has an operating weight of 15.3-15.4t. In its standard front option it boasts a digging depth of 5.4m, a digging reach of 8.2m and digging height of 9.2m. Its overall width is 2.5m while the standard track is 600mm wide. With a minimum swing radius of 1.9m, it has a digging force over bucket of 11.1t and a lifting capacity of 2.36t at 6m. Travel speeds go up to 5kph. A standard 7-inch LCD screen allows operators to continue monitoring excavator
parameters while viewing the rear view or optional side view camera image. Critical machine data appears next to the camera view. When the optional side camera is installed, a split screen allows both rear and side camera displays to be viewed at once. There are four work modes: Dig, Lift, Breaker and Sheer. To help save diesel, auto shutdown is standard. Operators can configure the idle time from three to 60 minutes. When enabled, the feature will shut down the excavator’s engine when the preset idle time is met. This is particularly helpful in areas where local regulations require idling for only limited periods for off-highway machines. Factory-installed options for the DX140LCR-5 crawler excavator include a straight travel pedal, which allows the operator to travel in a straight line more easily; a two-way auxiliary hydraulic pedal, in addition to joystick control; cab guarding for special applications; additional work lamps; and rotate circuit hydraulic piping. Doosan will display a DX140LCR-5 at its booth – C5887 – in the Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the annual World of Concrete Exhibition from January 23-26 next year. Operators must do a walkaround before they start the machine and also perform another when the day’s work has come to an end. Pay special attention to the undercarriage, looking out for cracks, dents, debris, packed mud, oil and fluid leaks, as well as track tensioning and plate gaps. Flag and deal with issues immediately.
APPrOPriATE TrAck TENsiON Operate the machine for at least a half hour to allow the track to acclimate to the working area before you check and set the track tension. If conditions change, like additional rainfall, readjust the tension. Loose tension causes whipping at higher speeds, resulting in excessive bushing and sprocket wear. Too tight and it stresses the undercarriage and drive train components.

MAchiNE bAlANcE A properly balanced machine will provide even wear of the track roller from front to rear and minimise track link rail scalloping. Good balance also will optimise track flotation and reduce the amount of track slippage. Always balance a machine on a smooth, level surface and set balance with the attachment that will be on the machine. Improper balance can accelerate undercarriage wear, thus shortening life, cause an inability to fine doze and make the operator’s rise uncomfortable.

lEvEl surfAcE PrEcAuTiONs While working on flat surfaces remember that dozing causes faster wear on the front idlers and rollers, ripping increases rear roller, idler and sprocket wear, and loading leads to more wear on the front and rear components than on the centre components. Repeating any one of these actions frequently will lead to its corresponding uneven wear.
OPErATiNg hAbiTs Consistently turning in the same direction results in unbalanced wear with more wear on the outside track. Operators should be instructed to alternate turning directions when possible to keep track wear rates the same. Non-productive high operating speeds should also be minimised to reduce wear on undercarriage components. Also avoid unnecessary operation in reverse to reduce sprocket and bushing wear.
fOllOw diggiNg guidEliNEs It is important to follow the specific digging guidelines for any type of equipment in order to ensure the safety of its undercarriage. For example, there are three specific recommenda tions for digging with excavators. The preferred digging method is over the front idlers to reduce the potential for structural problems. Dig over the side of the excavator only when absolutely necessary and never dig over the final drive.

erex Crane’s new Demag AC 45 City is a mobile crane that addresses one of the biggest concerns of the construction industry – not every project is a greenfield one that allows unrestricted movement of heavy equipment to the jobsite and on it during the construction process. As every contractor knows very well, projects within urban settings and builtup areas pose unique sets of challenges in terms of mobility. Build an apartment block on an empty piece of land far away from the city centre in the suburbs, and you can reasonably expect adequate room to bring in and manoeuvre the big cranes and earth movers. Build that same structure in the narrow confines of the city centre, surrounded by other similar structures all around and traffic congestion, and you no longer have the luxury of space to bring in the big machines. And then there are the indoor jobs where machines have to operate with roofs over their heads, such as
in warehouses and inside factories. These are the applications where the compact biggies come in – machines that are small in dimensions but big in capacity – such as Terex’s new Demag AC 45 City, the latest iteration of what has become an extremely well received and established range of mobile cranes whose small footprint belies its powerful performance characteristics. The Demag AC 45 City is Terex’s latest release in a line of versatile cranes built with use in confined space conditions in mind. As the name implies, the crane is very much designed for cityscape job-sites, with narrow access roads, small set-up and work areas, and restrictions on axle weights and height while taxiing. The AC 45 City boasts an illustrious lineage. It is a direct descendant of the Demag AC 25 City introduced in 1996, and then the Demag AC 40 City, which came out only a year later. When Demag showcased the AC 25 City, heads turned everywhere in the industry. It was more compact than any other mobile crane before it, and yet it featured performance to rival much bigger models and only needed one single cab for both travelling and crane work.
41 The industry quickly realised that the new crane was brilliant inside narrow buildings and in urban environments. The resulting customer interest was so big that Demag launched the AC 40 City only a year later, with the new machine not only becoming the most successful model of this class, with over a thousand units sold, but also being named Crane of the Year. Additional models followed, and thanks to the name it gave this model series, Demag is considered the inventor of the City class. Now, with the AC 45 City crane, Terex Cranes is debuting the latest model of the series – all under the Demag name, which in 2016 was brought back along with its rich tradition. “That means that we really have to deliver on two fronts. After all, the Demag City class stands not only for quality, but also for innovative technology,” says Frank Schröder, Terex director, Product Management, All-Terrain Cranes, about the expectations of the company’s customer base. This is why the new Demag AC 45 City is not just able to do everything its legendary forerunners could, but to do it better, according to Terex. Constant improvement has to be a given, keeping customers in mind, adds Chandramouli Neogi, project engineer at Indian design and contracting firm Consulting Engineering Services (CES). The Kolkata-based civil engineering specialist has to its credit many projects in the GCC region which have used Terex cranes and which Neogi has been associated with. “The previous editions of Demag City-class all-terrain cranes have proved invaluable on some of our job-sites within cities in the GCC. Obviously this has raised expectations, but I’m not surprised at the specifications of the new AC 45 model. Terex is among those companies that take customer feedback into account, and this model seems to be no exception,” Neogi says.
“The long boom is an advantage, but an even bigger plus is the steep angles in which it can be used. This will aid the practicality of the crane further, as with its compact dimensions, it can fit into even more confined spaces that are often found within cities”
Compact class-leader Where other cranes literally hit their limits, the new Demag AC 45 City crane delivers, Terex says. And the manufacturer cites the figures to prove it. For starters, the new three-axle unit redefines compactness in the 45t lifting capacity class with a total length of only 8.68m, width of 2.55m and overall height of just 3.16m. And the fact that its height can be reduced to less than 3m makes it unbeatable when space is at a premium. Indoors, the new AC 45 City can take full advantage of another plus factor in its design. Since the base section of its fully
42
All-terrAin crAne DECEMBER 2017
hydraulic main boom is also particularly compact with a length of 7.80m, the crane is also able to work in buildings with a relatively low clearance while still keeping its boom at a steep angle. This advantage comes in handy when assembling overhead cranes, for example, as the AC 45 City crane can lift heavy loads at a small radius. In addition, its fully hydraulic 31.2m main boom means it can get ready to start working much faster than comparable cranes with booms that need to be set up with pins. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of jobs. Another advantage is the configuration flexibility, making it possible to customise it for the requirements at hand, for instance with the 1.3m runner for loads of up to 25t or with the three-sheave hook block, which allows six-part reeving. And with offsettable main boom extensions of 7.1m or 13m, the system length can be increased to an impressive 44.2m. In addition, the Demag AC 45 City also comes with features such as an axle load indicator, a hook height indicator, cruise control and cameras for load, hook and hoist monitoring and backing up. Remote radio control and storage boxes are included too. “The long boom is an advantage, but an even bigger plus is the steep angles in which it can be used. This will aid the practicality of the crane further, as with its compact dimensions, it can fit into even more confined spaces that are often found within cities,” says Neogi. Features such as height and axle load indicators and monitoring cameras positively impact not only performance but also safety, he adds. Updated control system Among the engineering highlights of the AC 45 City is the IC-1 Plus control system, which calculates the crane’s lifting capacity for every boom position as a function of the superstructure’s slewing angle, in real time. This means the lifting capacity for a specific radius is no longer limited to the lowest value for a pre-calculated 360-degree lifting capacity, as used to be the case. Instead, the crane can always take full advantage of the maximum available lifting capacity. This advantage is particularly useful when it comes to lifts in which the outriggers are extended in an asymmetrical configuration, as it enables the crane to take care of jobs normally exclusively done by larger cranes. In addition to the real-time calculation for lifting capacities dependent on slew angle, the IC-1 Plus control system also has a smart feature to calculate and show the working range of the real-time lifting capacity within
Demag’s AC 45 City mobile crane has compact dimensions, enabling it to squeeze into tight gaps in cities and then lift heavy loads at small radii.
43 a +/-30-degree slew angle. Moreover, the control system features an automatic counterweight detection function that the crane operator needs to confirm. Together with the IC-1 Plus control system, the new Demag crane is additionally able to work with any outrigger configuration, with continuously variable adjustments, meaning it can be adjusted for all space conditions and load requirements. Moreover, the crane offers the possibility of working with the IC-1 Plus control system both when using the runner and when telescoping under load. The AC 45 City is also easy to set up, featuring an automatic levelling system that enables it to balance itself with computer assistance when the outriggers are extended. “The updated IC-1 Plus control system seems to not only enable the crane to exploit its full lifting potential, but also save time for the operator with its ease of set-up and outrigger control, comments Neogi. Terex says the new AC 45 City is also designed to stay in the most widely required 12t per axle load limit, as the three-axle unit does not weigh more than 34t, even with full equipment. That way, the crane can get to work without any additional transport vehicles. When using a reduced counterweight, the crane even falls below the 10t limit, meaning it can still perform a broad range of lifts, as lifting capacities remain strong; and since it only weighs around 26t when not carrying any counterweight, a permanent permit can be obtained if needed. Last but not the least, the drivetrain has six forward gears and one reverse, and the 260kW MTU motor meets all prevalent emission requirements. Together with the crane operation start/stop function, this ensures a cost-effective and environmentally friendly operation. This is just one of the many reasons the Demag AC 45 City is perfectly positioned to continue expanding on the success of its predecessors. SPeciFicAtiOnS

hen we talk of road machinery, the Wirtgen name is a force to reckon with. The German powerhouse is at the forefront of technical innovation in the field with its pavers, surface miners, hot and cold recyclers and cold milling machines. Add to this the expertise of the other brands in its eponymous group, such as Vogele and Hamm, and it is easy to see why Wirtgen has been able to keep raising the bar higher in the road machinery segment for decades. Among the best-known equipment from the brand are its pavers and road-milling machines. Already boasting an extensive line-up of products suitable for a wide spectrum of applications in roadworks, from smaller inner-city jobs to the biggest highway projects, Wirtgen has further expanded its offerings with a new large road milling machine – the W 210 XP – whose heavy-duty work capacity belies the ease with which it can be moved to and from job-sites. Wirtgen says that with the W 210 XP, its experts have extended their comprehensive product range in the form of a new highperformance machine. Combining high engine power with an application-optimised machine transport weight, the company describes this machine as having added a trump card to the deck within its class. The W 210 XP is a highly-advanced professional machine with an extended application range and is a “champion performer” in its
weight class, says Wirtgen. The model is equipped with a powerful six-cylinder engine, which delivers an output of 571kW, a figure that is on the higher side when compared to other machines in its class. This allows the milling pro to handle a wide range of applications with ease, from surface course rehabilitation to complete pavement removal and fine milling jobs. The W 210 XP uses Wirtgen’s Flexible Cutter System Light (FCS Light), which enables high machine utilisation. The model comes equipped with a 2m milling drum unit as a standard feature while units with milling widths of 1.5m and 2.2m are also available as options. The FCS Light feature, exclusive developed by Wirtgen for its machines, not only ensures greater flexibility but also helps improve a key metric for the economical operation of large milling machines – machine utilisation. Both the 2m and the 2.2m milling drum units are FCS Light-compatible. This allows milling drums of the same width but with different tool spacings to be fitted without difficulty as required for the job at hand. Another feature that ensures cost-effective operation is the HT22 quick-change toolholder system, which not only gives the machine more flexibility but also enables maximum milling performance. All the milling drums of the W 210 XP are fitted with the HT22 quick-change toolholder system, which sports a robust upper part that can be easily and quickly changed directly on site. This minimises machine downtimes and increases the lifespan of the milling drum. Wirtgen says that the HT22 system is the all-round key to maximum milling performance and cost-efficient operation. Despite being a large milling machine, one of the best features of the W 210 XP is the ease with which it can be transported to and from job-sites, making it a machine that is more easily available
45 Wirtgen’s new W 210 XP has a powerful sixcylinder 571kW engine, 1.5m, 2m and 2.2m milling drum options and features such as ergonomically designed controls.

for any given job in any location. With compact dimensions and optimum machine transport weight, the W 210 XP can be easily transported from one job site to the next. As a result, the milling machine can be up and running in no time. Without its water tank content of approximately 29t, the transport weight is low, so that the machine can also be transported on a light low-bed truck with a low gross train weight. This enables owners to be more flexible and also allows them to get their large milling machine to its next job at a fraction of the cost it would take to transport any other equipment of a similar size. Coming to the operator environment, Wirtgen has paid special attention to making the operator more comfortable and his job easier with thoughtfully designed controls. The optimised ergonomics of the W 210 XP’s operator platform is a key reason for the high daily production rates the machine can achieve. The operator platform features an ergonomically designed walk-through layout. The control elements are arranged in an optimal way to provide a clear overview and make operation easy for operators. A multi-functional joystick has been mounted on the seat armrest for easy, fatigue-free access. Control for most of the machine’s functions have been consolidated in the joystick, making for a simpler operation procedure. The operating concept of the new W 210 XP, devised by Wirtgen designers,
shows great attention to detail and allows high daily production rates. The design also incorporates a folding loading conveyor and a hydraulically retractable weather canopy, which support construction professionals during loading and transport of this large milling machine. Wirtgen says its W 210 XP is a highperformance milling machine that meets all the demands placed on modern construction machinery in full, be it high performance, economic efficiency or flexibility. Its combination of high engine power, optimum machine transport weight, flexible cutter system and quickchange toolholder system, together with the ergonomically designed operator environment, make it a machine that enables contractors in the road construction sector to work faster and with better results. While the W 210 XP is a high-performance version of Wirtgen’s W 210, the proof of the efficacy of the range can be found in a previous project in which the W 210 shone. Italy’s famous Misano racetrack, a regular host of Formula 1 and other high-profile motorsports events, was upgraded and resurfaced earlier this year, with a Wirtgen W 210 playing a pivotal role in the project. The upgrading works included modernising and constructing two new track sections with measures to boost safety as well as increase speed. The goal was to pave around 5,000t of new road surface, requiring 80 workers and 50 vehicles.
Without its water tank content of around 29t, the W 210 XP’s low transport weight enables it to be carried on a light low-bed truck with low gross train weight.
In addition to changing the longitudinal and cross slope of the track, all existing undulations and other irregularities had to be rectified. The milling depth needed to be adjusted with millimetre accuracy during the milling work to remove irregularities from the track. The project used a Wirtgen W 210 for this job, together with a Trimble 3D solution. After surveying the terrain, a 3D profile for the W 210 was created and uploaded to the Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System it was fitted with. The machine transited smoothly between the individual stations for uninterrupted milling work, aided by the control system, leaving no bumps that form due to stopping on the track. The trucks transporting the milled material away also did not have to deal with stringlines or stakes on the surface, enabling them to move faster. This enabled milling work to be completed in two weeks, leaving ample time for asphalt paving and ensuring the project was delivered on time and to the required standard. SPECIFICATIONS
