A Buzzing grApevine How do you know when a sector in the economy is feeling positive and eyeing the future with hope? At CMME towers, we look for some tell-take signs - such as when people in the sector are willing and eager to talk, and have substantial things to talk about. In the second month of this year, those positive signs are quite visible. Members of the industry that we are approaching seem to be more forthcoming than they were last year, and even the year before, with information about their prospects and activities. The industry grapevine is starting to buzz again with projects to be supplied, sales to be made, fleets to be revamped and new equipment to be launched. While we treat this information – with true journalistic skepticism - as pure speculation until it actually proves to be true, it’s obvious that even such speculative information is a better sign of the sector’s returning health than no information at all. There is no speculation, however, about how the last year was at Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East. As they tell us in this issue, returning to the UAE market with Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET) as their new dealer has made a world of difference to the Japanese major’s overall performance in the region. Hitachi and MECET were already long-standing partners in the entire Middle East for Hitachi-Sumitomo cranes before they decided to extend that partnership to cover the entire earth-moving range for the UAE market. With renewed emphasis on service and back-up, the Hitachi-MECET combine has already enjoyed a stellar first year of their partnership in the region’s second biggest market. As is the trend this year, they are willing and eager to tell CMME about the year that was and what is in store for the immediate
future. No doubt success both in the new UAE territory and in the rest of the region is the reason behind Hitachi’s chatty mood. Also chatty were some generator manufacturers. As can be read in our feature on the sector, OEMs such as Doosan Portable Power are feeling bullish about the region’s market and have followed up that feeling with something substantial in the form of the launch of a new range of gensets designed for the Middle East. Other manufacturers we spoke with are also feeling energised about the power generation sector and are looking to the future with hope. News of new launches continues with our look into Liebherr’s plan to blitz the telescopic handler sector this year. The company has lined up eight new machines in 26 different variants, which it will unleash on the global market in instalments for the rest of the year. Many of those variants will be suitable for the Middle East, and we will watch their launch and performance in the region with interest. With the time ahead looking to hold substantial promise, next month’s Big 5 Heavy, the first dedicated regional exhibition for the machinery sector, seems very appropriately timed. We will be there, trying to glean more from the industry grapevine.

Carillion crisis – Regional projects will continue
This achievement deserves a lot of attention (UAE opens upgraded $1.4bn highway to Saudi Arabia, January 24, 2018). Although everyone loves to hear about exciting stories like the Hyperloop One or flying taxis in Dubai, I think projects like this are actually far more important for everyday lives. Thousands of trucks and cars carrying goods and people cross our borders every single day, and investment into the highways that cross the continent is absolutely critical to development here. As we continue to wait for the GCC Railway to be completed, the roads will remain the most important link between the countries of the region – the traffic notwithstanding. I’m sure I’m not alone in welcoming improvements to the Gulf’s main highways. You only have to take a look at the number plates of cars in Dubai during the holiday periods to see how many families are already coming to the UAE from Saudi… Personally, I can’t wait to take a road trip on the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Highway from Abu Dhabi to the border!

Dubai crane rental company Al Faris has placed an order for 25 mobile cranes with Liebherr. The order marks the 25th anniversary of the Middle East’s largest crane rental operator and one of the largest crane rental companies in the world. According to Liebherr, the total value of the order is around $22m, which includes 12 of the brand new Liebherr LRT 1090-2.1 and LRT 1100- 2.1 roughterrain cranes, with the rental company opting for four of the former and eight of the latter. Also included in the order are five LTM 1070-4.2, two LTM 1130-5.1 and six LTM 1160-5.2 all-terrain cranes. Al Faris is one of the largest Liebherr customers in the world and currently
has around 400 Liebherr cranes in its fleet. The Dubai group, founded in 1992 and recently celebrating its 25th anniversary, can look back at a successful company history as the largest crane and transport vehicle rental company in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world. The company has a 3,200-strong workforce based at five sites in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and its core competence is mobile crane rental. The new 90t LRT 1090-2.1 and 100t LRT 1100-2.1 from Liebherr, which comprise the bulk of the Al Faris order, are part of a new series of roughterrain cranes in the manufacturer’s product portfolio unveiled in March at Conexpo, Las Vegas.

Euro Auctions sees rise in sales and bidders in second Dubai auction
Euro Auctions has reported a 40% rise in the number of bidders in its second sale in Dubai, held towards the end of last year at its new permanent site in the city. The global auctioneer of industrial plant, construction equipment and agricultural machinery said the rise in the number of bidders, as well as
in the number of successful buyers and new vendors consigning equipment to the sale, is a vindication of its decision to enter the regional market earlier this year. This was Euro Auctions’ second sale in Dubai; it held its inaugural auction in the region in September last year. More than 400 lots went
under the hammer in the auction, attracting strong interest from across the Middle East as well as from India, Western Europe and Russia. Almost $2m of the sales were snapped up by UAE-based bidders, with significant purchases also going to Oman and Saudi Arabia. Europe accounted for a further

Floor sales accounted for the vast majority of business, with just over 20% transacted online, said the auctioneer, adding that the numbers prove how vital a physical presence in the region is to meeting local demand. Euro Actions has leased a 91,000sqm site in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone. “We are absolutely delighted about how this sale has gone, firmly placing our Dubai operation in the region and on the calendar,” said Jonnie Keys, commercial manager, Euro Auctions.

Kobelco Construction Machinery has announced new 300t and 350t lattice boom crawler cranes for various global markets. The Japanese equipment-maker said its new releases comprise the CKE3000G for Europe, which has a 300t at 5.5m radius, and the 330 US ton for North America. There is also the 300t standard model for global release, which offers an increased 350t capacity in super heavy lift (SHL) specification. The standard global model
has an EU Stage IIIA/US Tier 3 compliant engine, the European model an EU Stage IV engine and the North American one a US Tier 4 Final unit. Compared to its 250t model, Kobelco said the new cranes can lift 40% more weight in standard specification and 60% more in the luffer variant. The models compare favourably to cranes in the 400-500t class when used in the SHL configuration. Transporting the cranes is also easier with all components less than 3m wide.

Five Raimondi toweR cRanes Rise in schaFFhausen
F
ive Raimondi tower cranes are dotting the skyline of the historic Swiss town of Schaffhausen, best known for its industrial and precision engineering heritage, such as for watchmaking. In fact, official Raimondi Cranes agent Interkran AG, based in Lachen, Switzerland and founded by Antonio Texeira, has erected the cranes in one such former engineering complex – Schaffhausen’s old steelworks. The five tower cranes will be used to redevelop the steelworks into a mixed-use project with residential, commercial and office space. Swiss developer and builder Klaiber Bau AG will position the five cranes for approximately two years on the job-site, where they will be used in the full build of the large-scale project. “We have erected five Raimondi cranes on-site in Schaffhausen, two MRT223s and three MRT189s. The heavy lifting MRT223 has jib lengths of 70m and 66m, while the MRT189 has jib lengths from 65m, 60m and 42.5m respectively. This Klaiber Bau job-site was fully attended to by the Interkran team in terms of the crane needs, from all logistics and transport to technical and application perspectives,” explains Teixeira. According to Raimondi, the MRT223 is one of the most successful cranes in the history of the company, in terms of numbers sold as well as customer feedback. Celebrating nearly two decades in the sector, Texeira adds that Interkran has successfully collaborated previously with Klaiber Bau on smaller projects, which led to the latest work between the two companies. “Our work with Klaiber Bau has been mutually rewarding, and Interkran has put our full strength behind servicing our client on this demanding job-site. We’re pleased to put five of our fleet of Raimondi tower cranes at their disposal for use in this important project.” The ambitious community revitalisation project plans to dedicate 73% of the completed space to residential housing, with additional dining and public service areas projected to employ approximately 500 individuals. The development’s showpiece city garden will be open to the public, and ample vehicle and bicycle parking is also incorporated into the plans.

n September, the UAE government took the very bold step of announcing its UAE Strategy for the fourth industrial revolution with the aim of strengthening its position as a leading country in technological advancement. This is a bold step which puts the country ahead of most other governments in the world by developing a plan to embrace and advance the technological tools made available by the increased use of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives. Many people reading this may not even be aware that mankind has even reached a fourth industrial revolution. As the name suggests, this is the fourth major industrial era since the first one, which began in the eighteenth century. The first revolution came about with the development of the steam engine, which enabled machinery to take the place of people in the manufacture of goods. The second revolution, built on the first, occurred between 1870 and 1914, driven by advancements in electricity production as well as the invention of the internal combustion engine. The third is the digital revolution, which started in the 1980s and still continues today in everyday life, such as in the use of mobile phones. When the first mobile phones started appearing in the late 1980s, they were overly large and cumbersome devices with limited coverage and very short battery lives. In comparison, today’s mobile phone is so advanced that it now operates as a portable computer system with which we can pretty much organise our whole lives. Where the second revolution built on the first, the fourth industrial
15 The future of many industries, including construction and agricultural equipment, is autonomous, as this Case driverless tractor demonstrates.
“It may not be long before anyone walking onto a construction site will see a fleet of driverless machinery ‘talking’ and interacting with each other while the operators observe from a safe distance and use remote controls to override the operation if a problem occurs”
revolution has taken the advancements of the digital revolution and learned how to apply them to allow breakthroughs in a number of fields – including robotics, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and even autonomous vehicles. So what does all this mean for the construction and heavy plant markets? In recent years, a lot of attention has been focused on how companies such as Google and Uber have been working on the development of autonomous vehicles. However, many construction and agricultural machinery manufacturers have also been developing this technology. In fact, the agricultural sector is already using semiautonomous combine harvesters and other larger vehicles to bring in crops. As long ago as 2016, an autonomous tractor was used to collect the harvested grain from a combine working on a large prairie farm in Canada and deliver it back to the grain store. This is done by having the field in which the grain is being harvested mapped using 3D modelling and aerial imaging, and then using GPS technology or a network of lasers to guide the tractor and combine around the field. This same technology is being developed by the main construction equipment manufacturers, with Case CE, Caterpillar, Volvo CE and Komatsu all having introduced their own products designed to integrate their machines into a fully operational construction site. It may not be long, therefore, before anyone walking onto a construction site will see a fleet of driverless machinery ‘talking’ and interacting with each other while the operators observe from a safe distance and use remote controls to override the operation if a problem occurs. This advancement may worry some operators, as it could potentially lead to a requirement of fewer operators to run the machinery. However, what needs to be remembered is that all these machines, both construction and agricultural, will need highly skilled people to program and maintain them. Experienced operators will also be needed for monitoring, to ensure that work is done to the required standard. The other major concern is that new technology usually comes with a higher price tag. Yet, as with any product, this only happens when a new technological advancement is brought onto the market. Once the product starts to gain a foothold, the price starts to come down. So, for the time being, the machinery used on a construction site will continue to be driven by operators – but in time, the move to semi-autonomous and fully autonomous machines will start to be seen.

ith 350 local and international exhibitors comprising the biggest names of the construction machinery industry spread out across five product categories, workshops and seminars delivered by equipment industry experts and special sections for machinery operators to show off their skills, the first ever Big 5 Heavy could set a new trend for the industry in the region. Taking place at the Dubai World Trade Centre March 26-28, the Big 5 Heavy will bring the whole heavy construction industry together at the venue as it showcases innovative solutions and the latests products in the sector clustered into the following five segments: Middle East Concrete, PMV Live, Foundations & Geotechnical, Mining & Quarrying and Road Construction. Organised by dmg events Middle East, Asia & Africa, the event will be the Middle East’s largest dedicated heavy construction industry exhibition and a relaunch of the previously independent Middle East Concrete and PMV Live. According to Richard Pavitt, event director of The Big 5 Heavy 2018: “Harnessing the reputation of the largest construction show in Middle East, The Big 5, and focusing it on a specific sector will bring exhibitors face to face with a high number of solely dedicated customers.” Among the key exhibitors are the region’s biggest Caterpillar dealer Al Bahar, Putzmeister, CIFA, Hitachi, Stevin Roack, Schwing Stetter, MB Crusher, Elematic, Stanley, German Plant Experience, Potain and Raimondi. Caterpillar and Al-Bahar are expected to have the biggest stand at the exhibition, at which they will showcase their latest products for the construction and infrastructure in the Middle East. The global leader in construction machinery will display heavy equipment for a wide variety of applications, including earthmoving, building construction, mining, road making, demolition, waste and scrap handling. Confirming participation at the event, Al-Bahar’s marketing manager says: “International events like the Expo 2020 and investments in a variety of sectors, including hospitality and mining, are boosting heavy equipment sales in the GCC, so we feel this
is the right time for us to reinforce our leadership in the market. Our presence at The Big 5 Heavy will strengthen our customer relationships and provide an excellent platform to showcase our capabilities, as well as Caterpillar’s latest and most innovative solutions for the local market.” Pavitt adds: “Caterpillar and Al-Bahar’s choice to come back to the exhibition after years of absence demonstrates that there’s a growing potential for the heavy construction industry in the region. It also confirms that the decision to relaunch Middle East Concrete and PMV Live, once co-located to The Big 5, as a new, independent and international large-scale exhibition dedicated to heavy construction was the best to support the industry and effectively meet its needs.” One of the oldest companies in the concrete laying industry, Compagnia Italiana Forme Acciai, otherwise known as CIFA, has also chosen The Big 5 Heavy 2018 as its mouthpiece in the GCC. Its participation at the event is expected to boost long-term investment goals in the Middle East and Africa. Wajih Eit, CIFA MENA head of area, says several huge projects and worldwide events in the UAE will keep people “investing and believing in the continuous positive outlook of these markets”. He evaluates that the region will soon be number one in terms of sales revenue and fleet presence for his company. Keeping in mind the resilience of the GCC and Middle East markets, the survival of which he attributes to ambitious visions put into action by local governments, Eit believes a large number of visitors are guaranteed and adds that with Dubai considered the business centre of the Middle East, showcasing CIFA’s latest products and technologies in the region at the event has much to do with The Big 5 brand behind its success. Other major exhibiting brands include Hitachi, whose regional head, Piet Van Bakergem, says: “Hitachi will present its range of high-performance equipment at the show, which we believe will enable us to take advantage of the upswing in the region’s construction sector ahead of pivotal events such as Dubai Expo 2020 and Qatar’s World Cup 2022.” Apart from machinery and equipment, the event will also include free-to-attend CPD certified workshops delivered by industry experts on topics such as project management, mining and quarrying, and sub-surface construction. The American Concrete Institute will also run seminars for the concrete industry.

GENERATORS FEBRUARY 2018
Doosan, which also owns the Ingersoll Rand brand, has made great inroads into the Middle East generator market in a short time with multi-million dollars in sales.
“We have units from 20kVA all the way to 750kVA...to cover more than 90% of the market. We’re also looking at the above-750kVA segment for the future. Now that we have a more comprehensive range, we are expecting good business this year”

major generator manufacturers are targeting the middle east market’s demand for both continuous and back-up power with a broad spectrum of models and services
a
paradox about the Middle East is that despite being a power surplus area, the region is still one of the most important generator markets in the world. While this may be surprising to the lay person, for people in the industry it’s not a difficult thing to explain. The first reason is the terrain. Much of the region is remote and harsh, generally inaccessible to people and power grids. Yet, human activity in the form of oil extraction, telecom nodes and even settlements, does go on even in the most remote areas - all of which need power. The spate of construction that the region has seen in the past decade or more has mostly been on greenfield sites before power grids were extended to them. All of these construction sites required power, as do similar sites being developed outside the limits of almost every city in the region today. The third reason is the one that fuels this paradox – the availability of oil. With oil prices in the region still below global average, operating a generator is not as expensive as in other geographies. Therefore, when a telecom installation in a remote location needs to be powered, a generator is the accepted solution. A company that offers such solutions with its generator sets is Doosan Infracore. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East and North Africa, Doosan Infracore International, says the company’s generators and power division, Doosan Portable Power, came to the UAE market only last year based on the demand for gensets in the territory. For a late comer, however, sales have been excellent. “We did sales of over $700,000 last year even after launching in the middle of the year. So we’re expecting an even better year this year. Last year our range spanned units rated from 80kVA to 750kVA. Then in December, we launched a new smaller capacity range, with outputs from 20kVA to 60kVA. “So now we have units from 20kVA all the way to 750kVA. With this, we are able to cover more than 90% of the market in terms of usage and demand. We’re also looking at the above-750kVA segment for the future. Now that we have a more comprehensive range, we are

expecting good business this year both in the UAE and in the wider region.” A large chunk of the business in the wider region that he alludes to comprises the 60Hz Saudi market. As in the rest of the region, that market too is divided between units below and above the 80kVA range. While the market above that capacity forms 25-30% of the total volume, the one below makes up the bulk of the region’s sales volume at around 70%. Then there are the largest capacity units, rated in the megawatts, which only comprise around 5% of the market by volume but are exponentially greater in value for obvious reason of size. “Most of this demand comes from the construction sector, while some of it also goes to the back-up and stand-by power market. Saudi Arabia remains the biggest market in the region, especially for us. Last year our business volumes there were $4-5m,” says Rhayem. “Overall in the Middle East and East Africa our business volume was some $9m last year. And this is just a start, since we entered the market in the overall region only in 2016. In two years, we have developed our network; starting from two dealers in the beginning we now have around 10. So we are expanding rapidly and expecting more business and success ahead.” Another leading brand, Himoinsa, has shipped many sets to the GCC region and has been involved in supplying power solutions to many projects. According to the Spanish company, the power generation market in the Middle East calls for better levels of performance optimisation and Himoinsa’s sets
are designed to withstand extreme conditions while offering versatility and autonomy. Guillermo Elum, Himoinsa’s sales and marketing director, says the HRFW-250 T5 is the first model of a new range of quieter generator sets for the rental sector. Powered by an FPT engine, it guarantees a noise level of 61dB ±2 at a distance of seven metres thanks to an improved and more complex design

This feature is available in both the Industrial range - HYW from 8kVA to 45kVA - and the Rental range – HRYW from 16kVA to 40kVA. The long maintenance interval is a great advantage for rental and telecom applications. “It guarantees more autonomy and reduced operation costs,
especially on remote sites,” says Elum. Meanwhile, French manufacturer SDMO is represented by Genavco in the UAE for the continuous power market and Asif Khan, general manager, Plant and Machinery, at Genavco, says: “For continuous power, the requirements fall in the 5kVA to 1000kVA range. for SDMO generators. Our customers come from the oil & gas industry and the telecoms sector, apart from the construction companies, of course, who have a requirement at their job-sites during the construction period to power tools and workers’ accommodations.” Genavco also distributes John Deere engines in the UAE market, which SDMO uses a lot in its generators up to 400kVA. “It is advantageous for Genavco to be the dealer for both SDMO and John Deere together for reasons of synergy. We can offer bumperto-bumper warranty on many SDMO gensets, aiding better market penetration,” adds Khan. Many large construction companies use SDMO gensets supplied by Genavco and the model range most in demand falls within the 250kVA power band, which suffices requirements for most construction sites. With the 500kVA more in demand from rental companies, the most important range for the SDMO-Genavco combine is 200-500kVA. “Some of the big names in the construction field such as Sobha, Al Sahel Contracting and Al Fara’a Contracting, are our customers. We are very positive about SDMO’s business in 2018. As the governments invest in the infrastructure sector, the construction process will require more and more power at the jobsites. Together with SDMO’s regional office in Dubai and their service people based here to provide technical support, our after-sales and service team supports a joint action between the two companies to ensure customers do not have single moment without power.”

a
year is a long span of time in any business. It can make the difference between success or failure for the best in any field, even in a sector such as construction machinery, where the pace may seem to be less frenetic than in sectors such as fastmoving consumer goods. For Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East (HMEC), the past 12 months have been a difference for the good. At around this time last year, when CMME spoke with Piet Hein van Bakergem, general manager of HMEC, new things were brewing at the Japanese major. After a spell of absence in the UAE market, the bright orange of Hitachi equipment was conspicuous by its absence from the construction landscape of the country. By staying away from the second biggest market in the region, and perhaps its most visible and prestigious one, Hitachi had ceded ground to its rivals, leading to myriad shades of yellow taking over the job-sites in the country. But all that was about to change. To bring the Hitachi orange back to its rightful state of visibility in the UAE – Hitachi is after all one of the leading equipment manufacturers in the world and has seldom slipped out of the global top-four in living memory – the company had just signed on Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET) as the new dealer for its entire equipment range in the UAE. MECET was already Hitachi’s long-standing partner for distributing Hitachi-Sumitomo cranes in the entire Middle East and that relationship of trust and achievement had just been extended to cover the rest of Hitachi equipment in the UAE market. There was expectancy in the air, though tempered by a sense of caution that the depressed state of the general construction market in the region for the past few years had brought on. It was as if both Hitachi Construction Machinery and MECET knew that getting together was the

right move for the orange revolution they were looking for in the UAE equipment market, but were still testing the waters. A year on since then, there is no hesitancy anymore. The partnership has already tasted success and is gunning for more. “From HMEC’s perspective, it was a difficult start when we teamed up at the beginning of last year in the UAE. The first couple of months were a bit slow, which was expected because the Hitachi-MECET combination was a new one, and Hitachi had not been present in the UAE market for a while,” says Van Bakergem. “But then we started seeing sales pick up, with local companies placing orders for Hitachi equipment. And, actually, in the last few months of 2017 we picked up the pace a lot and saw some quite nice sales. Almost all equipment categories saw growth, whether wheeled loaders, wheeled excavators, mini excavators or crawlers.” The big surprise of the year was the performance of the mini excavator segment. Wim Aernouts, director, MECET, says: “What was surprising, and very pleasantly so, was the interest in our mini excavator products. This region is not supposed to be a mini excavator
market but we still saw sales of the product line exceeding our expectations. I think the reason for this is that now we have more landscaping and maintenance work going on in cities like Dubai. It’s like the market is maturing now. A lot of structures have come up, which require maintenance, and the working space is more confined with less requirement for heavy work. And mini excavators are well-suited for such tasks and conditions.” Another reason, he says, is that mini excavators have given contractors a cheaper and easier way of getting the job done than they were previously able to do with the use of manpower. “Right now, they can get the same work with one mini excavator as they would have with 10 men, and usually in less time. Previously, they used to invest more in manpower than in machines, but realising the cost and time benefits of the mini excavator, they are now starting to invest in the machine. This is a reason for the renewed interest in minis.” Explaining the rising popularity of the minis further, Van Bakergem says: “In my own neighbourhood, a couple of mini excavators are involved in a cable-laying job. There are

some workers around, of course, who are doing the bits and pieces. But if you were to see the same job being done five years ago, you would’ve just seen an army of workers doing the whole job manually with shovels and hand tools. So, what 20-30 people used to do previously, you can now do with a mini excavator and around five people or less.” Aernouts also points out that since the mini excavator is not such a big investment as the bigger earth moving machines such as crawler excavators or wheeled loaders, it is selling steadily. “If there is a job to be done and it demands a mini excavator, then a contractor or operator is likely to buy a machine without the enormous time and preparation it takes to decide on a bigger purchase. In this way, the minis are faster moving products for us as a manufacturer.” The mini excavator segment in the market has quite a few well-known players and so Hitachi does have some competition from the other global brands. However, both Van Bakergem and Aernouts are confident about their products against the competition. “We have an entire range of mini excavators, from 1.8t to 6t in capacity. The 1.8t and the 3t

“We also have machines configured for specialised jobs, such as with long booms for marine and breakwater applications. The 870-5G can be equipped with a 21m boom...the EX1200 with the 29m boom” models are the most in demand in our range and are our best sellers, followed closely by the 5t model,” informs Van Bakergem. Coming to the heavy equipment range, Hitachi is well known around the world for its extensive line-up of models, and this region is no exception. The 80t excavator is one of the company’s biggest machines in this region, says Van Bakergem, and it is used primarily in the mining segment. “Of course, the 20t and 30t weight classes are doing well for us, as they are the most popular classes in the market. These machines are sought after by the rental companies as well. The rental outfits are investing now and putting them out into the field for the contractors,” he adds. “Also, using rented equipment often leads to greater ease of mind for contractors, as they do not have to worry about repairs, servicing and back-up. This is where MECET comes in. When we sell a Hitachi machine to a rental company, they buy it with the full assurance that the back-end of support functions is completely secure with the help of MECET.” Hitachi also has excavators modified and kitted out for special operations, Van Bakergem adds. “We also have machines configured for specialised jobs, such as with long booms for marine and breakwater applications. The 8705G, for example, can be equipped with a 21m boom. Then there is also the EX1200, with the 29m boom. Several options can be discussed.” Hitachi has seen a steady growth in sales
in the heavy earth-moving class, comprising excavators and wheeled loaders. “For us the biggest piece of good news is that we have reached a double-digit market share in those equipment classes, especially in excavators, which is not a bad start for the Hitachi-MECET combine,” says Van Bakergem. Regional coverage Outside the UAE, the manufacturer also saw good things happening in Oman and in some other areas around the region in both the earth-moving equipment and the Hitachi-Sumitomo crawler cranes. “The business was quite stable when seen from the wider regional perspective for the whole year. We sold double-digit numbers of Hitachi-Sumitomo crawler cranes,” says Van Bakergem, adding that this was an excellent result to close 2017 crawler crane sales. Discussing specific markets, he adds that Saudi Arabia continues to be slow. “It’s as if somebody turned off the lights and now nobody knows how to turn it on again. Late last year, the Saudi government presented a budget with a significantly bigger outlay on infrastructure. It’s the talk of the town at the moment, but it will take a lot of time before this budgetary stimulus is reflected on the ground, and even then, we may not see the heady numbers of circa 2015 return.” Meanwhile in Kuwait the government has gone on a spending spree and there are a lot of projects that need to be delivered on

an immediate basis. This does put pressure on the construction sector and some are concerned that the spending is on an immediate basis rather than being spread out over a longer period of time to make it more fiscally sustainable. However, as an equipment manufacturer, Hitachi is not complaining, as the immediacy of the projects is leading to demand for machinery to complete them, enabling it to increase sales in Kuwait. “The market may be smaller, but you can take advantage of the situation to increase your sales sometimes significantly. Basically, we always prioritise market share. Numbers are nice, but for us market share is the key area we aim to shine in,” explains Van Bakergem. “And significant market share is what we have achieved in some countries in the region, In Oman, for example, our team combined with a strong dealership is busy following up on information about renewed government spending. New port infrastructure in coming up at Duqum, which is the place to be for this year if you are in the construction and equipment business. In fact, the Hitachi dealership in Oman will be opening a new branch in Duqum shortly to cover the area better and be close to customers there. “In the wider Middle East, we have also appointed Medevco as our new dealer in Lebanon, which is perhaps a smaller market than the GCC countries, but we expect our Lebanese operations to assume a lot of significance once the situation in
26

neighbouring Syria improves. Lebanon can be expected to take on a lot of the contracting business in rebuilding Syria when the time is right, so it is important for us to have a strong presence there in anticipation of that. The first deliveries for Medevco will begin in April this year, so the Lebanese market itself is providing us some numbers already.” Looking into 2018, he says exciting things are in store. MECET will open its new premises in Dubai while the Hitachi dealer in Qatar will also open a completely new facility this year with a significant investment. This will be a larger, new, state-of-the-art facility, encompassing workshops and a parts centre, updating Hitachi’s service offering in the country.

Cranes get a lift The Hitachi-Sumitomo brand is one of the most sought after where crawler cranes are concerned. And in the Middle East, it has enjoyed the consistently meticulous back-up of Hitachi’s regional partner MECET, which serves the entire region, apart from Saudi Arabia, from its Dubai operations for Hitachi Sumitomo cranes. This is no small factor in its popularity, says Aernouts. “For Hitachi-Sumitomo, sales have been well spread out throughout the GCC, though the UAE has been the top performer. What has helped this distribution is that some UAE-based companies have branched out to Kuwait and Oman to take advantage of the opportunities there, and they are using our cranes in those territories. Our cranes are working in the Duqum port project in Oman and in infrastructure works in Kuwait,” adds the MECET director. “While the middle weights are a popular capacity class, smaller ones are preferred for foundation jobs, where we have found great success with our 55t and 70t models. But the single best-selling crane in the HitachiSumitomo line-up is the 280t model.” Speaking about the dealer’s contribution, Van Bakergem adds: “The reputation of MECET is a big plus for us. It is highly appreciated among the rental companies and other contractors in the region. This is why they are very willing to be in touch with MECET and consider Hitachi-Sumitomo cranes for their fleets, as they are fully confident that with MECET they will receive a very high standard of support in their operation from both the sales and after-sales points of view.” This includes full on-site support for maintenance and repair, as well as a huge inventory of parts, so that everything needed is quickly available and the customer has minimum downtime for his crane. “In fact, support is so important that it is
often the proposition on which machines are sold. We continuously encounter customers, especially in the rental sector, who talk about after-sales service first before discussing the purchase. They already know the specifications of the crane or equipment that they require, so you don’t have to tell them what to buy, but they want to know all the ins and outs of our

after-sales support, because they don’t want any downtime,” explains Aernouts. “Sometimes, just to check your preparedness and to make sure you can deliver on what you promise, a customer will call you after midnight saying they need a special part quickly on-site. So running an operation that caters for all the needs of our customers requires special skills,

which we have developed and perfected with our experience and effort.” Service these days is written in gold when it comes to contractors, he adds. For them, it’s all very well who you are and how well-known your brand name is, but more importantly, they need to understand the level of service you’re able to give and not only do they need
availability of parts but also of people on site. “Right now, MECET is supplying spare parts from our warehouse in Dubai Investment Park and later on this year we will have our larger new facility there, which will be like a state-of-the-art one-stop shop for Hitachi equipment, complete with both workshops and warehouses,” Aernouts says. Speaking about the future, he adds: “Our plan for the next few years is simple: we will go on investing in after-sales, which will be one of our most important points to keep Hitachi machines running. This will be coupled with a strategy to keep our prices attractive in the market. And here we’re talking about everything from maintenance and parts to the availability of the machines themselves. “We will also invest more in mini excavators and wheeled-excavators because we see that a market for those machines is opening up in this region step by step. That market is so promising, I think we need more investment in this sphere. “Hitachi and MECET are committed to the future of the Hitachi and Hitachi-Sumitomo brands in the UAE and the Middle East. I would say we are fit for the future and that exercise comes along with the expertise and big investment from MECET as a dealership and from us as the manufacturer. Together we are painting the region’s construction landscape orange and making sure the Hitachi orange comes back in a big way in the Middle East.”

BKt’s new offroad 171 tyre optimum traction in wet and muddy ground conditions, durability
VolVo expands compactor line-up with new dd110c Why get it? HigH centrifugal force, and variable amplitude for HigH-speed compaction Volvo Construction Equipment has introduced a new double drum asphalt compactor, the DD110C, the latest in a series of recent compactor introductions from the company. With a 1.67m drum width and an operating weight of 11t, the DD110C rounds out the highway-class double drum compactor series from Volvo, which also includes the recently introduced DD120C (2m) and DD140C (2.1m) models. The DD110C is available with a host of features that improve productivity and uptime, including Compact Assist with Density Direct, which Volvo says is the industry’s only Intelligent Compaction (IC) system that displays real-time density calculations. Other features include ActiveCare Direct, a 24/7/365 machine monitoring and utilisation reporting service offered directly from Volvo CE; an eight-amplitude drum; and a Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty. “The DD110C is right in the 10t-class sweet spot, making it well-equipped for any medium- to large-scale paving job – from commercial to heavy highway,” said Bill Laing, compaction product manager at
Volvo CE. “The addition of the DD110C really rounds out our entire asphalt compaction line-up, which we’ve expanded to include six new models in just the last year.” Powered by a 148hp Volvo D4 Tier 4 Final engine, the DD110C is designed to deliver high-quality compaction in less time. With a high-frequency system delivering 3,800 vibrations per minute (vpm), the DD110C can keep up with a paver travelling at 18m per minute while still maintaining appropriate impact spacing. For easy visual reference, the machine’s redesigned on-board display features an Impact Spacing Meter, which allows the operator to control speed and maintain the correct impact spacing. The DD110C also combines high centrifugal force, heavy static weight and variable amplitude. Featuring an optional eight-amplitude drum, the machine can be fine-tuned for a variety of operations. For thin lift applications, lower amplitude prevents over-compaction. For thicker lifts, higher settings ensure compaction occurs deep within the material in as few passes as possible, improving productivity. The DD110C also features an automatic, variable-interval water spraying system with dual spray bars, dual water tanks, dual water pumps and triple filtration. SPECIFICATIONS

Global off-highway tyre heavyweight BKT has expanded its range with the AT 171 and TR 171 tyres, designed for all-terrain vehicles and tractors. BKT says the tyres are engineered for optimum traction in wet and muddy ground conditions by virtue of their tread design. Other distinctive features are efficient self-cleaning properties, along with a high degree of cut-and-chip resistance and a “robust” casing that is durable and “ensures an extended product lifecycle”. The TR-171 is a crossply tractor tyre available in a selection of sizes including 9.5x18 with an eight-ply rating. The load/ speed index for the TR-171 9.5x18 is 105A6, which means it can carry a maximum load of 925kg while travelling at a speed of 30km/h. Designed for excellent traction and self-cleaning in wet conditions, its extra deep lugs provide improved performance with increased tyre life. The natural rubber compound of the TR-171 tyre offers good wear and tear resistance. The AT 171 is suitable for on- and offroad applications with ATV vehicles. The special directional and extra-deep tread design provides excellent traction on wet and muddy surfaces. The AT 171 also comes with optimum self-cleaning properties, along with extraordinary cut and chip resistance. The strong casing ensures extra durability and a long service life. BKT’s tyres for UTVs have become popular in mud applications for their performance and size. The company says its 171 tyres perform extremely well in deep mud and are manufactured in large sizes without extreme width, eliminating excessive tyre weight. The tyre range for UTV wheels goes from 16” up to 22”, with overall tyre diameters as large as 40”.

01 ChECk Oil bEfOrE usE Check the oil before each use. If it’s a new generator, change the oil after the first 20 hours of use to remove assembly lube and metallic particles created during the break-in period. Otherwise, change the oil every 100 hours or according to manufacturer recommendations – and even sooner if operating in dirty conditions.
02 ClEar ThE air Check the condition of the air filter daily, and clean when necessary. Regular checking and cleaning of the air filter assumes even greater importance in dusty and sandy environments such as the Middle East. Even a partially clogged or blocked air filter will lead to the engine running poorly. Regardless of how dirty it is, clean the filter every 100 hours and change it at the regular prescribed interval.

NEW LAUNCH FEBRUARY 2018
more to handle
Liebherr is upping the ante in the teLehandLer segment with the Launch of eight new modeLs in 26 different versions throughout the year, bringing the brand’s quaLity and features to a vitaLLy important construction tooL
T
hat the name Leibherr has always stood for quality is undeniable in any construction equipment market in the world. While the German brand has not taken the value proposition route to market penetration that a lot of major manufacturers, especially the Chinese, have done, it has still managed to consistently feature in the global top 10 of equipment manufacturers by sheer dint of uncompromising quality. And now the Teutonic powerhouse is extending this ‘no compromise on quality’ mindset to its revamped telehandler range, with the announcement of a spate of fresh launches slated for this year, totalling eight new telehandlers in an incredible 26 different versions. Chances are that if a customer in any part of the globe does not find the exact version needed in that number, he or she will not find it at all. The impending launches are good news for the Middle East and surrounding regions too, where the telehandler is one of the most-used equipment classes according to contractors, consultants and builders. Fresh models, especially from a company as reputable in terms of quality as Liebherr, are always welcome because of the choice they bring to users, they say. Those fresh models can indeed be expected to be at the cutting edge of the
technology in the sector as, true to Liebherr’s tradition of being meticulous, they have been in development for a long time. In fact, Liebherr announced three years ago that it was developing a telehandler series. The first fruit of that development was visible in October last year, when Liebherr gave the international press a sneak peek of the first actual iron. According to the company, the new telescopic handlers will be available in two model lines: the top-of-the-range models for materials handling or for production applications, which will be identified by the suffix S, and the simple, cost-optimised value models for stacking and lifting applications. As of January, three 7m models with a load bearing capacity of 3.2t, 3.6t and 4.1t, one 6m model with a load bearing capacity of 3.5t and one 10m model with a load bearing capacity of 3.3t will be produced in Leibherr’s Austrian manufacturing plant in Telfs, Tirol. Two additional 7m models with a load bearing capacity of 4.6t and 5.5t will follow in the course of the year. A 9m model with a load bearing capacity of 6t will complete the extensive range of the new Liebherr telescopic handlers for the time being. The range of lift capacities and lift heights covers a broad spectrum of jobs and usage, offering customers machines suitable for multiple jobs. In the Middle East, where telehandlers are an essential part of almost all construction projects and job-sites, some participants in the sector have received the news of the

NEW LAUNCH FEBRUARY 2018
“With the new telehandlers, the same Liebherr toughness and reliability will be extended to an equipment class that is popular and vital in the construction landscape of the Middle East” Liebherr telehandler launches favourably. According to Chandramouli Neogi, project engineer at Indian infrastructure design consultants DCPL, Liebherr machines have carved out a reputation for quality in projects in the region, and the new telehandlers can be expected to follow in the footsteps of the company’s earth moving machinery and cranes as far as quality and utility are concerned. “Liebherr machines have always distinguished themselves by their performance in our projects in the region. Be it for infrastructure projects in the deserts of Saudi Arabia or in building power projects in Qatar, the brand has proven to be tough and reliable and well-adapted to the conditions of the region,” says Neogi. “Now, with the new telehandlers, the same Liebherr toughness and reliability
will be extended to an equipment class that is popular and vital in the construction landscape of the Middle East.” In the new generation of telescopic handlers, Liebherr is also relying on established Deutz diesel engines. These have been optimised in terms of performance and fuel consumption and have a displacement of either 3.6l with 99-134hp of power or a displacement of 4.1l with a 154hp output. The 4.1l models are additionally equipped with diesel particulate filters, which is offered ex-works as an option for the 3.6l engines. While the engines comply with Stage IV/ Tier 4 Final emission standards thanks to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), for operation in regions such as the Middle East with differing emission regulations, where the diesel grade available often has a negative impact on
Liebherr’s new telehandlers will include models with Stage IIIa emissions for the Middle East, with high-performance hydraulics that the company is known for.
engine operation, Liebherr will also offer telescopic handlers in emission Stage IIIa, staggered over time. When it comes to the travel drive, Liebherr relies on the established hydrostatics. The infinitely variable, and always powerful, hydrostatic drive produces maximum traction of 70kN, depending on the engine power available. The new Liebherr telescopic handlers have a maximum speed of 40km/h. As an alternative, the machines are offered in speed versions of 20km/h and 30km/h. The telescopic handlers are braked without wear by means of the hydrostatic drive’s selfstoppage function. The Liebherr hill assist, installed as standard, ensures safety and maximum driving comfort when travelling over uneven ground thanks to the automatic activation of the parking brake.
39
High-performance hydraulics Machine performance has been improved as a result of the complete redesign of the working hydraulics. As an alternative to the established working hydraulics in the value models, Liebherr is equipping the S models with high-performance hydraulics. A powerful load-sensing working hydraulic pump with an oil output of 160l/min and a control block with load-independent flow rate distribution enable overlapping working movements and therefore dynamic and rapid operating cycles. “Superior performance of the hydraulics systems is a hallmark that we have observed of Liebherr machines used by some of our contractors. With the extension of the same high level of hydraulic performance to the new telehandlers, I wouldn’t be surprised if the brand finds good traction in the market
segment,” observes Neogi. Different machine hitches are offered for all models in the new generation of telescopic handlers ex-works. In addition to the Liebherr quick coupler, quick couplers compatible with the machine hitches from manufacturers Claas, Manitou, Kramer, JCB and Volvo are also offered. The variety of machine hitches available means customers can also use their existing tool attachments from other manufacturers on the Liebherr telescopic handlers. Application-specific user requirements were used as crucial design criteria for the new telescopic handlers. The developers focused specifically on ideal visibility and intuitive and convenient operation. The new design guarantees ideal visibility of the load to the front for high machine productivity, as well as to the side and to the rear for optimum safety. This is achieved in particular by the very low linkage point of the telescopic boom and by the edges, which slope outwards, and therefore the engine bonnet, which follows the line of sight. With an all-round windscreen and the narrow internal ROPS/FOPS guard adapted to the line of sight, the cab contributes to providing the best view of the load. Other design aspects focus on intuitive operation, comfort and ergonomics. The 5-in-1 joystick installed in the value models, or the multifunctional joystick integrated into the S models, enables all essential operating functions to be carried out using single-arm operation, so that the driver’s left hand remains safely on the steering wheel at all times.
The new Liebher telehandlers will have tilting steering columns, fully-adjustable seats, intelligently designed switch gear and spacious cabs for greater operator comfort.
Even before its official market launch, the new T46-7 model won two design awards. The German Design Council made this telescopic handler the winner of the renowned German Design Award 2018 in the transportation category for its ideal visibility and its dynamic appearance. It also won the Red Dot Product Design Award 2017. The spacious cab, the tilting steering column, various adjustable seat versions and the intelligently designed operating and switch system improve ergonomics and therefore create optimum comfort. This is additionally supported by the very wide range of options available ex-works. These include the Liebherr comfort drive, a driving vibration damper for comfortable driving with low vibrations, as well as camera systems, lubrication systems and different lighting packages for optimum illumination of the work environment. The manual control package, which can be used to conveniently match the speed of the travel drive and the working hydraulics to the requirements of the specific usage case, is especially innovative. A wide range of additional options allows the new telescopic handlers to be configured for specific applications. For instance, Liebherr offers its customers ex-works a reversible fan for cleaning the radiator and additional safety guards or covers for the travel drive and main frame. Automatic pressure relief for the working hydraulics in order to make replacing tool attachments simple, an additional hydraulic circuit for actuating further functions on the boom head and a separate control option for the hydraulic oil flow rate in the working hydraulics are also offered.
