new year, new hope

COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR MICHAEL STANSFIELD michael.stansfield@cpimediagroup.com +971 4 375 5497 SALES MANAGER

The New Year is the time for new beginnings and new hope. With the Middle East’s construction sector in the doldrums for a while now, equipment sellers are not too optimistic about making any new beginnings in 2017. But there is still hope on the horizon. Even in the midst of what is undeniably a slowdown, the region has seen continued work on infrastructure projects, such as roads and interchanges, and the new Dubai Canal that opened late last year, linking the creek to the sea. Meanwhile, the deadlines for Dubai’s Expo 2020 and Qatar’s FIFA World Cup are drawing ever closer. With only three years left for the former and five for the latter, the entire construction and machinery industry in the region is pinning its hopes on these two mega projects to kick start the sector and provide that stubbornly elusive new beginning. In fact, machinery companies are already gearing up to capitalise on the glimmer of hope that future events are infusing into the market and attempting to use this promise to engineer demand. A case in point is Case construction equipment. The Italian-owned equipment giant chose the last quarter of 2016 to bring its Eagle Days customer outreach programme to the Middle East and says it feels buoyed by the healthy participation from all over the region and beyond. With contractors planning their 2017 assaults on a piece of the shrunken projects pie, Case felt this was the right time to gain from a possible uptick in demand by placing its products at the top of customers’ recollections.

It was a similar line of thought that led paints and coating systems giant Axalta to establish a direct presence in the region. The American company has enjoyed success in the Middle East through its distributors and thought the promise of growth on the back of impending mega projects in the region made it a ripe time to set up its own solo shop in Dubai. Meanwhile, Ritchie Bros. achieved a landmark in the region – its 20th auction in Dubai. The Canadian auctioneers marked the occasion with a celebration along with their partners and customers, in which they highlighted their growth story in the two decades spent on the sands of Arabia. With a new year upon us, at CMME we are geared up to continue bringing you the news, information and analysis that have made us your favourite magazine in the sector. And in this issue we focus on the machine at the core of any job-site – the excavator. We feel it’s a suitable beginning. Happy New Year!

There is much excitement over the frequent suggestions that ‘hyperloop’ transport could come to the UAE (“Abu Dhabi to study feasibility of Al Ain Hyperloop”, December 12). But there are many questions over such a system, which has yet to be put into use on a large scale. Would such a system ever be as practical and straightforward to build, and as convenient and cheap to use, as a regular train network? Name withheld, via email

The UAE construction industry has its challenges. But the prospect of falling rents is not a symptom of this. As the Core Savills study (quoted in “Dubai rents ‘to fall by up to 4%’ in outer areas”, December 19) suggests, more than 20,000 new units are to be delivered to the Dubai property market in 2017. The supply is helping drive down prices in areas – but not to the same extent as we saw during the height of the financial crisis. Siraj Ahmed, via email

Volvo CE’s HX1 prototype electric load carrier has won the Swedish Institute for Quality’s (SIQ) Quality Innovation of the Year Award. The autonomous, batteryelectric model was declared the winner in the Potential Innovations category at the awards. Volvo CE’s vision of a futuristic machine is one element of a present-day electric site research project, predicted to cut carbon emissions by up to 95% and lower total cost of ownership costs by a quarter, Volvo said.

Rather than having a few, large, versatile machines, as is the norm today, the HX1 demonstrates the emergence of smaller and more numerous specialist machines. This ‘elephants to ants’ concept is a new way of meeting customer needs, combining intelligent machines, automation and ‘electromobility’, Volvo said. “The HX1 forms part of Volvo CE’s long term ambition of achieving sustainable transportation solutions,” said Patrik Lundblad, senior vice president, Volvo CE.

Abu Dhabi to study Al Ain Hyperloop

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) has announced an agreement with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) to undertake a feasibility study to connect Abu Dhabi and Al Ain using the Hyperloop system. The agreement details a multiphase rollout that includes route analysis and feasibility studies, as well as a cost estimate and development schedule, which will be determined over the next few months, said the department. Once these analyses are successfully completed, both DMAT and

HyperloopTT will discuss further steps. “Through this agreement with HyperloopTT, we aim to study the feasibility of developing the first Hyperloop system. We hope to take advantage of this technology, which is capable of reaching a top speed of 1,200kph, to connect Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, with a travel time of about eight to 12 minutes,” said Khalid Mohamed Hashim, acting executive director of the Land Transport Sector at DMAT. The study will identify locations for stations and tracks. The cost of the Hyperloop system is estimated to be significantly less than traditional high-speed railway and it will also need half the time to implement compared to traditional high speed rail projects, besides consuming only a fraction of the energy, DMAT said.

GROVE CRANE COMBINES CONTROL AND POWER IN DORTMUND LIFT

G

rove’s GMK5250L all-terrain crane has recently played a vital part in a new construction project in downtown Dortmund, Germany, where it was involved in the building of a facility that leases storage boxes. Used by the German firm Autokrane Schares the five-axle crane was chosen due to its manoeuvrability, as the job site had a tight entrance road and limited space in which to park the crane. The loads the crane was to lift presented another challenge: asymmetrical precast elements that weighed up to 18t, each with an imbalanced centre of gravity. In order to create enough space for traffic to flow on the site, the pieces were lifted horizontally, directly from trucks at the edge of the property, and then lowered vertically to the final position in the building. The pieces were up to 14m in length. The GMK5250L passed comfortably through an entrance road with a width of only 4m, thanks to its 3m-wide chassis. The crane’s VIAB power train with its turbo clutch module gave the driver precise control without excessive wear on the vehicle during manoeuvring and braking. The crane was parked at the rear of the property for the entire project so trucks and trailers had enough room to pass. The 250t crane, equipped with a 70m boom, lifted the lighter, 12t precast elements at a radius of 35m, and the heavier 18t pieces at a radius of 25m. Andy Kohn, who operated the crane for Schares during the project, said the GMK5250L’s Crane Control System (CCS) made a valuable impact on the project, along with several of the crane’s other features. “The ability to smoothly control the boom and hoist line individually allowed us to manage the precast element’s unfavourable centre of gravity. The boom configurator of the CCS was very helpful in this respect. I needed only to enter a few data points in order to select the best possible setup options from lifting capacity tables of about 5,000 pages,” he said. “The conveniently arranged operating controls and the easy-to-operate jog dial allowed me to concentrate fully on the lift, which was not the simplest one ever performed.”

Bauma China 2016 occupied 300,000sqm at the Shanghai International Expo Centre, equivalent to 42 football fields, and saw 2,953 exhibitors from 41 countries.

THE DRAGON FLIES STEADY

THE EIGHTH EDITION OF BAUMA CHINA SAW HIGH LEVELS OF INTEREST FROM BOTH EXHIBITORS AND VISITORS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE, GIVING RISE TO HOPE FOR THE FUTURE IN A MARKET THAT HAS FALLEN OFF ITS DAYS OF HEADY GROWTH

M

ore than 170,000 visitors from 149 countries descended on the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in the last week of November for Bauma China 2016, the 8th International Trade Fair for Construction Machinery, Building Material Machines, Mining Machines and Construction Vehicles. Against a backdrop of economic slowdown and ongoing change and modernisation in the construction machinery industry, Bauma China 2016 showcased the latest models and innovations from the biggest global manufacturers, who were all assembled at the venue to show off their products and services to Chinese customers in a market that, despite being off its peak of a few years ago, still remains a growth area. Stefan Rummel, managing director of Messe München, was satisfied with the result: “Bauma China 2016 received a positive visitor response. With 14 years of development, Bauma China once again underlines its leading role in Asia. It has provided participants with good opportunities for industry communication and exploring product innovations, market trends and possible solutions despite the current uncertain situation.” The breakneck pace of growth that the Chinese economy was used to seeing until a few years ago may have slowed down at present, but China continues to be one of the fastest growing major economies of the world, which Bauma China once again capitalised on this year. Jun Qi, chairman of China Construction Machinery Association, says: “The success of the exhibition reflects the confidence of the exhibitors worldwide towards the Chinese economy as well as the world economy. It is beneficial to the faster, healthier growth of the construction machinery industry.” While most visitors at the event were naturally Chinese, there was a sizeable presence of visitors and participants from overseas. The top 10 visitor countries and regions from outside China were Korea, Russia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and Australia — in that order. Chinese giants For the Chinese equipment giants, the importance of their home exhibition cannot be overstated, and the likes of Sany, Lonking, Liugong, SDLG and others were present en masse with their latest releases and solutions. Jing Chen, director of the president office, Sany Heavy Industry, China, says: “Bauma China is the most important exhibition for us. This year, we again staged an extra-large booth, so

The new model – which is SDLG’s biggest ever motor grader – was the star of the show for SDLG and was displayed alongside a range of the brand’s best-selling excavators, wheel loaders, motor graders, road rollers and backhoe loaders. Speaking at SDLG’s international press conference and the G9260 product launch, Wang Zhizhong, board chairman of SDLG, said: “Bauma China provided us with a great opportunity to showcase our capabilities as an international company to our customers, dealers and the media. The launch of the G9260 demonstrates our commitment to developing the best motor grader in the nation. We are seeing growing demand for construction equipment from mining and large-scale infrastructure projects in China and our customers are looking for a bigger, durable grader to work on these projects. “Demand for motor graders in Southeast Asia is surging and we are confident that the G9260 will increase our competitiveness in the road building market.” The G9260 is ideal for use in mining and on large infrastructure projects. It can handle a variety of tasks including land grading, ditching, bulldozing, slope scraping and snow removal work. It will be sold in China in early 2018. Powered by a Tier 3 SD13 engine, the powerful and highly productive grader offers excellent performance in any terrain. The machine features optimized weight distribution, an impressive 136 kN of tractive force and is equipped with a hydraulically powered wet brake system. The electronically controlled diesel engine matches perfectly with the power shift transmission control valve and the

that our customers and peers could get to know us better. There were a lot of visitors this year. Visits to our booth far exceeded our expectations. The biennial Bauma China is a great platform for the construction machinery industry to showcase its latest products and corporate image. It is really great for the communication of the industry and its development.” Meanwhile, another Chinese giant, Zoomlion, also made full use of its participation at the event to reach out to its prospective clientele. Wei Wang, marketing department director at the company, says: “Bauma China 2016 has maintained its size and again features all the leading exhibitors in the world. We had a lot of visitors, especially from overseas markets. We think the organisation has again improved this year.” Making full use of its home-market show was China’s XCMG, which launched many new products at the event. These include the first eight-axle, 1,200t all-terrain crane in the industry; its first self-developed double slot milling machine; a new generation S9 platform concrete equipment developed with Schwing, the German leading concrete machinery manufacturer acquired by XCMG in 2012, the largest tonnage telescopic type loader crane in China, the SQS625; and the largest crawler-chassis rotary drilling rig in the world, the XR550D. Bauma China 2016 occupied a grand exhibition area of 300,000sqm at the Shanghai International Expo Centre, an area equivalent in size to 42 football pitches. It attracted 2,953 exhibitors from 41 countries and regions, which is in line with the last show, despite the tough industry situation. Out of the total of 2,953 exhibitors, 70% came from China. Besides the existing leading companies, many new exhibitors participated in Bauma China 2016. All in all, there were about 45% new exhibitors. In particular, many large manufacturers participated for the first time.

mechanical transmission system, delivering optimum performance and fuel efficiency. The double fuel tanks in the G9260, the first of their kind in China, ensure high driving force and reliability. With a maximum cutting depth of 825mm, the blade of the grader is 4.27m wide and the cutter diameter is 1626mm. The G9260 has a forward and reverse speed of 44.2 km/h and 31.8 km/h respectively. The G9260 motor grader’s cab features the latest generation of operator safety and comfort, including a new falling-object and roll-over protection structure (FOPS/ROPS). The electric-hydraulic locking mechanism ensures safe and convenient operation.

Global participants Exhibitors from outside China made good use of the event to showcase their products and technologies, and this year’s event featured seven national pavilions: from Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the USA. Ulrich Reichert, CEO for China at the German brand Wirtgen, says: “Bauma China, as the leading trade fair for the Asian market, has always

had a very special significance for our company. Our Bauma China presentations every two years reflect the development of our company in China. Trade visitors experienced the power of our new products first hand at our booth in Shanghai. Our presentation at this year´s Bauma China is the most successful so far in the history of the company.” Over at regular Bauma China participant Atlas Copco, its general manager for China operations, Freddy Man, says: “We have participated at every Bauma China since its opening. It is a great event not only for China, but also for all of Asia. Today, Bauma China has grown from a product exhibition platform, to a channel for industry communication. Though the market is now at a low, we are still confident about it.” Echoing his sentiments was Jian Cui, sales vice president for China at Manitowoc Cranes, the American giant that needs no introduction. “We have exhibited at Bauma China since it started in 2002. The visitors and exhibitors at this event are really high profile and international. We reached customers from China, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions. We think our presence at Bauma China is very important to us.” Manitowoc had the world premiere of its Potain MCR295 and prototype MCH120 tower cranes at the show.

19 Another global crane manufacturer to use Bauma China as the launch pad for a new product was Comansa, which launched its first-ever luffing jib cranes, the CML series. German engine specialist Deutz premiered its new TCD 9.0 four-cylinder diesel engine while pride of place at its alliance partner Liebherr’s stand went to the 300t LTM 1300-6.1 mobile crane, the most powerful 300-tonner in the mobile crane market. Another company to have exhibited at Bauma China since its inception is powered access specialist JLG. The company said it had another successful outing at the 2016 show and even netted some orders. “We have participated in every Bauma China. The trade show attracts a lot of firstclass machinery and parts manufacturers. There are also customers from all over the world, especially from Asia. We started receiving orders on the first day itself. The organisation and visitor quality are superb,” says Xiaolu Wu, marketing director for Asia at JLG’s Shanghai office. Despite a relative lull in the Chinese market and in surrounding countries, the 2016 edition of Bauma China continued to build on it past success to once again draw in both exhibitors and visitors. With several exhibitors reporting orders being placed at the show and almost all buoyed by the high level of interest in their products and services, the event has the potential to infuse new life into the Chinese and the regional construction machinery industry.

Chinese manufacturers such as SDLG, Sany, Lonking, Liugong and XCMG (below) were out in force at their “home” show with many new models.

A MILESTONE UNDER THE HAMMER

GLOBAL MACHINERY AUCTION POWERHOUSE RITCHIE BROS. COMPLETES 20 YEARS OF OPERATIONS IN DUBAI AND MARKS THE OCCASION WITH ITS LAST AUCTION OF 2016 AND A CELEBRATION OF ITS TWO DECADES IN THE REGION

W

hen you have been conducting auctions for more than two decades, it can be expected that you have the whole process down to a pat – as Ritchie Bros. do. The Canadian multinational machinery auction house celebrated its 20th year of auctions in Dubai last month with another of its trademark auctions at its Jebel Ali facility, and again everything ran like clockwork. And this time, to mark the milestone, the company’s communications specialist, Alexander Ypeij, and regional sales manager, Dubai, Eduard Faig, took CMME through the company’s history in Dubai, revealing some very interesting facts. Over the last two decades, more than 120,000 items have been sold at Ritchie Bros.’ auctions in Dubai, Ypeij reveals, as the company celebrated its 20th anniversary in the UAE with its Dubai auction on December 13 and 14. Businesses from the wider Middle East region had consigned 1,700-plus heavy equipment items and trucks to the two-day unreserved auction for which bids were made in person at the auction site or online at rbauction.com and by proxy. This online bidding is a special feature of auctions at Ritchie Bros. and one that has recently assumed greater importance than ever before, but more about that later. First some history: Ritchie Bros.’ inaugural Dubai auction was held in 1997. Since then the company has held 72 auctions in the city, selling over 120,000 lots and registering more than 40,000 bidders. And as the numbers added up, the auctions, too, evolved with the times. Today’s auctions in Dubai are a lot different from those conducted 20 years ago, Faig and Ypeij say. “At the first auctions in Dubai, bidders were seated in a huge tent and everyone joined in person as we didn’t have online bidding yet,” Faig tells us. “Now we run our operation in a comfortable auction theatre, with a full-service equipment yard. Through the years, more bidders from more countries outside the region found their way to our Dubai auctions, either in person or online, making it a powerful auction hub. Every year businesses from all over the Middle East, Asia and further away rely on us to sell and buy the equipment they need.”

22

EVENT REPORT JANUARY 2017

The Dubai auction on December 13 and 14 was Ritchie Bros.’ 73rd in the region. Befitting the importance of the occasion the number of bidders - 960 - was a record for Dubai, with 54% onsite and 46% online and coming from 71 countries. Equipment highlights included 60-plus cranes, including a 2014 Sany SAC2200F 220t all-terrain crane sold for $560,000; a 2008 Manitowoc 14000 crawler crane sold for $517,500; more than 70 excavators, including a 2011 Caterpillar 336DLN hydraulic excavator; over 75 compactors, including 10 unused 2016 Dynapac CA255 vibratory rollers; more than 15 bulldozers, including two 2013 Caterpillar D6T bulldozers; 170-plus generator sets; and many more items. “Over the years things have changed a lot,” Ypeij says. “Online bidding has taken off significantly. Today, in Dubai auctions, around 25% of the sales come from online bidders. Compared to our operations, online sales here are still low. Globally it’s around 50% at the moment while Dubai is around 25%, but what is remarkable is the way that online has taken off even here in Dubai in recent years.” Things have changed in other ways, too, he adds. Back in the day, stationary equipment was sold in the yard with a bunch of bidders moving around the equipment, following the auctioneer’s soundtrack. “In Dubai the summer auctions were

1997 FIRST AUCTION

getting rather hard, but the bidders would still follow the auctioneer around to the best of their ability - and ours as we did the auction. Today it’s a little different. Convenience is a very important factor for both sellers and buyers that we work with. So stationaries are now sold by hat we call the Virtual Ramp. It keeps rolling in front of the crowd,” says Ypeij. Another change introduced a couple of years back to make things easier was Timed Auctions, he points out. “The Timed Auction is like an eBay type system – it’s only online and there is no auctioneer involved. People have a few days to place their bids. Then a timer starts and when it finishes its countdown on the particular time and date the item gets sold to the highest bidder.” Speaking about how the online side of the business has taken off in Dubai, Ypeij adds that when the service was launched here in 2002, online bidders comprised less than 1% of the total bidders at their auctions. “Over the years we have developed our service and around six months ago we redesigned the whole online bidding,” he explains. “Online bidding is very important now and the acceptance of buying things online has significantly increased around the world. The trend is gaining strongly among our customers here as well.” Advocating the need for both online and

73

onsite bidding systems, Faig adds that having both in place allows buyers the convenience of choice as to how they want to join in. “For the seller it is pretty important to reach as many bidders as possible from around the world. The more local and isolated the auction is, the more it will depend on the conditions in a local market. But with online bidding you have greater international reach and you can sell to a global market no matter where the auction takes place,” he explains. “In 2015, 63% of our total global customers bid online and around 52% of the lots we sold were to online bidders around the world. Again in Dubai, the corresponding figure was around 25%, but it’s climbing fast. In monetary value, we saw $1.9 billion worth of online sales last year.” The increase in online sales, of course, mirrors the overall increase in sales volume in Dubai since Ritchie Bros. set up shop in the city two decades ago. Speaking about the history of the company’s operations in Dubai, Ypeij throws up some startling figures: “In 1997 we sold a very small number of lots under a 1000. There was a high in 2003-4, a dip in 2005-6 and periodic crests and troughs in our sales, as per market conditions. “If we add up all the lots sold here over the past 20 years, the equipment will stack 60 times the height of Burj Khalifa when placed one on top of another. In fact, just placing

The auctions are still unreserved, with no minimal or reserved prices. “So everything seen in the yard today will be sold by tomorrow. There is an aspect of certainty that is reassuring for both the seller and the buyer,” Faig adds. “Transparency is a very important factor for us. We welcome hundreds and thousands of people around the world every year. There are some basic rules for transparency and fairness – like we don’t make judgements on the equipment that we sell,” Ypeij explains. “We try to make it easy to find what they need, make as much details as we can available to them, have fully open and transparent auctions and offer a lot of additional services, such as insurance, finance, storage and logistical services.” With the ideal combination of upholding its traditional values of transparency, trust and probity, along with a futuristic outlook of providing the best of modern technological conveniences in its field, Ritchie Bros. can well look to hammering out another two decades of excellence in Dubai.

CUSTOMER FOCUS JANUARY 2017

SOARING TO CONQUER

CASE CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT BRINGS ITS WELL-KNOWN EAGLE DAYS TRAINING AND CUSTOMER EVENT TO DUBAI AND LEAVES CUSTOMERS AND PARTNERS IMPRESSED WITH ITS MACHINES AND NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

I

n the highly competitive world of construction machinery, simply manufacturing some of the best products available on the market is not always good enough to drive in customers. The equipment landscape is an ecosystem of manufacturer, dealer, customer or end-user, all woven together by the support the first two provide the others and how much use and uptime the end-user can extract out of a machine to positively affect his bottom line. The equipment itself is only the starting point. As one of the best-known manufacturers in the world, Case Construction Equipment is well aware of this. Not only do they make equipment to such a high level of excellence that it often sets the market standard, but they also back it up with reaching out to their customers and supporting them through all their operations. It is a partnership and Case and its Dubai dealer, Al Shirawi enterprises, know all about it. As Thani Al Shirawi, managing director, Al Shirawi Enterprises, puts it: “In our business, selling a machine to a customer is only the start of a relationship.” And relationship is a word that Franco Invernizzi, senior business director for Africa and Middle East at CNH Industrial Construction Equipment, Case’s parent brand, knows all too well. He had earlier told CMME: “Partnering with our customers and providing the highest levels of service and support is a key element of Case’s success. With this in mind, we have put in place several programmes that contribute to our brand’s overall success.” One such is Eagle Days, Case’s global customer outreach programme. A three-day event, which incorporates field demonstrations of its range for customers and facilitates product and commercial training for its sales professionals, Eagle Days had already been successfully held by Case in Tunisia and South Africa before Dubai played host to the first one to be held in the Middle East from November 20 to 22 at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort and

27 The Eagle Days event in Dubai gave Case customers the opportunity to learn more about the company’s machines through live demonstrations.

Shooting Club. More than 160 customers attended the customer event in Dubai, including a large number from the UAE, as well as Oman, Qatar, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon and Ethiopia. There was a live machinery show on the final day plus product demonstrations from expert Case operators on a wide range of equipment. Customers witnessed crawler excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders at work while being able to interact with the Case Commercial Training Team, including product specialists, were on hand to advise on the best machine for each application. Meanwhile, the first two days had seen a training programme organised by the Case Commercial Training Team being attended by almost 50 salesmen from 10 countries, including eight from the Middle East and two from Africa. It provided both in-depth product walk-arounds in the demonstration area as well as classroom sessions. Impressive debut The biggest news at Case’s Eagle Days in Dubai, however, was the announcement of its new parts facility in the region and the debut of its 885B motor grader. The facility, located in Jebel Ali, aims to increase service levels and reduce

downtime, and help Case customers maintain high levels of productivity. With the capacity to hold more than 350,000 part numbers it will be able to efficiently cover demand for the entire region. The new depot joins eight others already present in the EMEA region and includes 335,000sqm of storage space and a total of 7.8 million part orders per year via a 24/7 operation. Quality of the machines, parts and logistics are the three key elements to provide complete customer satisfaction, Case believes, and the Dubai depot’s mission is to focus on the Middle East market’s needs, stocking parts and improving delivery time. “Thanks to this new site, delivery times will be slashed by several days,” said Marco Baffoni, director, Dealer Parts Support Services EMEA. “Now we are able to supply our customers with parts within a couple of hours. With this new depot in Dubai, we and our CASE network will increase customer satisfaction and loyalty.” Among the equipment on display, the 885B grader was the star of the show. Customers were especially impressed by the grader, which perfectly suits local needs and is built with a powerful engine, rugged A-frame and moldboard design, industryleading flip-up rear hood, best-in-class serviceability and outstanding visibility.

“Once again we have had a great response to our Eagle Days event,” said Invernizzi. “The three-day format, including the sales training as preliminary to the main show on the third day, enhances the relationship between salesmen and customers from across the region.” Earlier, the customer day started with a welcome from Thani Al Shirawi, managing director of Al Shirawi Enterprises LLC, Case dealer in Dubai. “Eagle Days reflect the true spirit of Case Construction Equipment, which is to show and share practical experience and heritage, and focus on making the ownership experience simple and rewarding,” he said. “Case specialist operators and knowledgeable product specialists showed how the products’ design has evolved over the years with the objective of simplifying customers’ lives, and having representatives from the factory, supply chain, dealers and customers together was a valuable experience as it enabled the exchange of ideas and potential solutions for customers. “Opening the regional parts distribution centre was a long-felt need and is a most welcome step, as it will strengthen confidence in the Case brand with the assurance of parts availability.” Invernizzi also introduced the CNH

A ROBUST CASE

NEW 885B MOTOR GRADER LAUNCHED A torque converter lock-up is one fothe biggest assets of the Case’s B-series graders. The transmission combines the torque converter typical smoothness, for fine grading, with the direct drive solution for full power transfer. A rear mounted cab is the best in its class for controllability and comfort and in which the operator is always in line with the working direction. Easy serviceability is part of the Case DNA and all the main checks can be easily performed from ground level; all the service points are conveniently grouped and positioned. The FPT Engine always ensures the necessary power for any task. Two power curves are available on the 885B along with wiht three engine settings for even better performances. The high versatility of the equipment owes to its core design. The wide variety of options offers the possibility to create a tailored grader suitable for the most demanding applications. A special feature that Barnard went to great lengths to point out was the externally driven circle teeth. The external pinion is not subject to any shock while working in heavy grading, meanwhile the slewing ring external teeth prevent residual material accumulation extending the overall working life. A multi-radius blade makes for lower power absorption and optimised rolling effect and the A-shape frame offers optimised effort distribution in any condition ensures long operating life. Load-sensing hydraulic systems provide a balanced flow for all applications and for simultaneous moldboard movements.

29 Case’s senior business director for Africa and Middle East, Franco Invernizzi, introduced the new Case parts facility in Dubai to distributors and customers.

CASE IN QATAR

OPEN FOR ALL Case Construction Equipment and its official distributor in Qatar, Nasser Bin Khaled & Sons Heavy Equipment (NBK) provided key decision makers and operators in the country’s construction industry a firsthand look at how Case and NBK are able to help their businesses at an Open Day event held on October 25 at Regency Hall in Doha. A live show featuring skid steer loaders, backhoe loaders and crawler excavators entertained the visitors while demonstrating the efficiency of the machines and the ease of access for servicing. Raffi Keuylian, General Manager of Nasser Bin Khaled & Sons – Heavy Equipment Division, was very pleased with the event: “The Case Open Day helped us create awareness about our premium line of |Case construction equipment and educate our potential clientele about our after sales services, training, parts support and financing solutions. We were able to meet key decision makers and influencers and show them what we can do for their businesses. This was the first time our heavy equipment division has hosted an event of this size, and it will be a trendsetter for our division.” Franco Invernizzi Senior Business Director CNH Industrial Construction Equipment for Africa and Middle East, concluded: “In NBK we have found an outstanding partner, which has shown it is capable of giving Case customers the best sales and service support, which they expect from our brand. This is a market of strategic importance for Case, and we are investing, together with NBK, in strengthening even further the Case teams on

Industrial group and the Case brand and values to an audience of almost 180 attendances, followed by a short presentation on the new parts depot facility and its advantages before the demo show. Customers could see all the machines in action, including Case’s renowned 821F and 1021F Series wheel loaders and its popular skid steer loaders. A full line walk-around took place afterwards where product specialists talked about the capabilities of each machine and about the innovative Case technology that is setting benchmarks in the industry. There was also time for a question and answer session to enable customers to put their questions to the team directly on the field with their hands on the machines. The event came to a close later that evening with a gala dinner under the palm

trees at the Jebel Ali resort. By the reactions of both dealers and customers, Case’s Eagle Days in Dubai was very well received. “I enjoyed the show; it was impressive. The demonstrators were very professional and in control,” said Mustafa Abdul Jawad, project manager, Al Mahdood, Saudi Arabia. “Case are for sure great machines and we are depending on them at Al Mahdood. They are reliable, efficient and so durable.” Amir Siddidgi, fleet manager at AIMS group, UAE, added: “This event has been enjoyable and highly informative. It was very useful to see the machines live at work.” Bassam Adi from Arabian Construction Co, UAE, signed off: “After the demonstrations performed I’m really looking forward to have Case machines in our fleet.”

COATED WITH SECURITY

AFTER A LONG PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST THOUGH ITS DISTRIBUTOR NETWORK, AMERICAN COATINGS AND PAINTS SPECIALIST, AXALTA, HAS LAUNCHED ITS SOLO FORAY IN DUBAI TO TAP INTO THE REGION’S GROWTH

A

xalta Coating Systems is a leading global coatings company, operating in more than 130 countries, dedicated solely to the development, manufacture and sale of liquid and powder coatings. With more than 150 years in the coatings industry, it provide a range of performance and transportation coatings for manufacturers of light and commercial vehicles, the refinish aftermarket, construction equipment, and for many industrial coating system applications. “Our innovative coating products and services include paint and powder, colour matching tools, application technologies, customer training, as well as support and business management systems. In addition to our 38 manufacturing facilities, Axalta is committed to the development of world-class products through innovation. Driving this area, we operate four global technology centres which support an addition of 30 country technology laboratories that are strategically located in our key markets globally,” says Sobers Sethi, vice president of South and East Asia Region, Middle East and North Africa, Axalta Coating Systems. The company has been serving the refinish and collision repair market within the Middle East through an established distribution network with the support of sales and technical teams since 1983. Because of the growth in Dubai and the region, it made sound business sense to expand its own footprint with a Middle East office, Sethi explains. “One of the chief factors for the decision to establish the office in Dubai is its emergence as the leading trade hub within the GCC. This is supported by its strong economic growth, private sector activity, low interest rates, and widespread government spending,” he adds. His colleague, Fadi S. Medlej, Axalta’s managing director for Middle East and North Africa, explains: “We need to navigate through the current global economy which is structurally weak as a result of a commodity down cycle, including in emerging markets. While overall growth rates may have slowed, we’ve been able to offset these macro conditions

31 Axalta uses its understanding of the Middle East’s harsh environment to provide products that protect construction, industrial and equipment assets.

by leveraging innovation to gain share in our core markets, which include the US, China, Mexico and a number of western European countries.” The US is a key market for Axalta, he adds, and both its refinish automotive repair and OEM businesses are doing well. “Taking coatings as an example, the market there has an estimated worth of $1.5 billion annually,” Medlej adds. “As a global coatings manufacturer, we offer high-quality coatings while managing overall costs in order to provide manufacturers with a variety of alternatives. Axalta offers a variety of one- and twolayer coating systems to meet the standards set by many agriculture and construction equipment (ACE) manufacturers. For many ACE manufacturers, excellent gloss and colour retention, combined with a high degree of edge protection and corrosion protection, are high on their list of coatings priorities. These technologies are the way we bring value to our customers and increase share in this environment.” Expanding footprint In the Refinish - also known as collision repair - market, it made sound business sense to expand the company’s footprint in the important Middle East territory, both Sethi and Medlej say. An inportant factor behind the decision is that Dubai is the economic heart, commercial capital and major trade hub of the GCC. There is strong economic growth, private sector activity, low interest rates, and widespread government spending. Axalta takes a long-term view and is optimistic about opportunities here. “For us, of course, the car market remains particularly attractive,” Medlej says. “Dubai has topped global growth rates for new car sales based on the statistics of the first eight months of 2015, and the wider Middle East car sales market is predicted to grow twice as fast as markets in North America and Western Europe between 2012 and 2022 according to regional automotive publication Carmudi. “Forecasts of annual light vehicle sales among the member states of the GCC, estimate a surge of 25% to nearly 1.75 million new car sales.” Cars are not Axalta’s only focus, however. The company is also a major player in the protective coatings sector for heavy duty machines such as construction equipment. “With our understanding of the nature of this region and its tough weather environment, we provide our highperformance coating products that can

A COATING FOR ALL REASONS Axalta provides an extensive portfolio of liquid and powder coatings for the Agriculture and Construction Equipment (ACE) market. In early 2015, Axalta introduced AquaEC 6100, an electrocoat technology which is formulated to provide corrosion protection for ACE and other industrial customers. For two-layer systems, Axalta’s PercoTop CS381, an epoxy-based solventborne liquid primer, is ideal for applications where higher functional protection is needed. And PercoTop 9675 and PercoTop 771 are Axalta’s most popular polyurethane ACE topcoats. Powder coatings include the one-layer polyester powder product Alesta IP and Alesta SD. “Axalta continues to pursue global approval among top tier ACE manufacturers which enables their regional facilities to use our products with a minimum of additional hurdles. We’ve got a great portfolio of products for customers in each segment. We have strong refinish brands – Spies Hecker, Standox, Cromax, Duxone, Challenger and Nason – available in 18 countries,” says its VP, Sobers Sethi. For industrial and, particularly ACE customers, Axalta provides an extensive portfolio of liquid and powder coatings. address, solve and protect investment done in the construction and heavy equipment sector. By working closely with our customers, we make sure that we understand their needs and advise them of the right application and train them on its proper application,” explains Medlej. “We stand out for a few

reasons. Firstly, we have an established and successful R&D organisation that is focused on developing superior coatings for our customers. In 2015, we allocated more than $160 million to R&D and product development.” Dedicated customer focus The second and perhaps the biggest factor for the company being a stand out one is that it prides ourselves on its dedicated customer focus and continually builds its business and develops its products based on customer feedback. “A key focus for Axalta has been our development of coatings that are waterbased to meet environmental priorities and that do not need expensive and hightemperature, energy-consuming ovens to be cured or dried,” Sethi explains. Going further about the company’s innovations and how it addresses customers’ needs, he adds: “There is a demand for more productive coatings that go on further with fewer coats to save time and reduce waste.”

33 Addressing this, Axalta created the waterborne basecoat products that require roughly half the total number of coats compared to traditional coatings, increasing efficiency while providing an unparalleled finish, he adds. “The result of our customer focus is in the numbers. Axalta is the number one global supplier in the refinish segment supporting body shops and the vehicle repair industry,” Sethi says with pride. “We’re the number two supplier in the electrical insulation sector, in industrial electrocoat, and the number two powder provider for industrial customers. Finally, Axalta is one of the top suppliers to light vehicle OEMs and is the number one global coatings supplier to heavy duty truck and bus manufacturers,” he points out. Another key sector in the region that is of great interest to Axalta is the fied of oil & gas. It remains a big factor in the region’s industrial development, one that Axalta aims ot benefit from with its Nap-Gard functional coating products that serve this market in a variety of formulations. The company has also just introduced its first interior pipe coating specifically designed to meet the industry standard JO Wafra test conditions. “Both the new Nap-Gard 7-0017HT and 7-0017VHT Black Beauty FBE products are thermosetting epoxy powders designed to provide excellent chemical resistance when operating in temperatures up to 200

TRAINING FOR CONSISTENCY Axalta’s Dubai training centre will be modeled on its leading refinish training centres and incorporate the latest developments. It will be Axalta’s 47th such centre in the world designed to help the technicians who use its products hone their skills and optimise the use of its products, say Sethi and Medlej. Ensuring consistency across their customer learning and development centres is important because many of Axalta’s customers are global and require a standard training programme across the region, they add “All of our refinish training centres deliver a planned curriculum to ensure that our customers have comprehensive understanding of our products, brands, their applications, and expected performance. The training is a combination of classroom discussions and practical applications. Training encompasses all the steps, starting with the surface preparation to the finished panel. In addition, the training centre will also support customers in trouble shooting,” adds Sethi.

degrees Celsius,” Sethi explains. “Our global business strategy is to support our customers’ long-term growth in all markets by providing customised, innovative coatings solutions with the best customer experience. “We will achieve this by leveraging our strengths in R&D, a worldwide network of customer training and manufacturing centres, as well as a team of talented and passionate people.” Axalta’s strategy is to be a leading coatings supplier in the markets it operates in, say both colleagues. Establishing an office and Refinish training centre in Dubai will help it serve regional customers with industryleading coating solutions and earn the right to be a preferred partner of customers. Being close to the customer and providing them with support services is a proven growth strategy for Axalta. “We are fortunate to have an incredible base of almost 13,000 customers globally, who challenge us daily to bring new aesthetics and functionalities to their operations. This partnership with our customers has resulted in new innovations, like the development of our next generation architectural coatings which will meet and exceed AAMA 2605 requirements and include a full range of metallic colours,” says Medlej. “There are a number of other exciting technologies in the near-term pipeline that will directly benefit customers in the region,” Sethi concludes.

LINK-BELT ADDS 250T CRAWLER CRANE WHY GET IT? HIGH LIFT CAPACITY, LONGEST MAIN BOOM IN CLASS AND EASY TO TRANSPORT Link-Belt has expanded its top-end crane offerings with its highest capacity telecrawler crane ever - the all-new 250t TCC-2500. The American crane specialist says the TCC-2500 will make an outstanding addition to any general construction, power transmission, wind farm, power industrial or large crane rental fleet. “The long-term plan for our telecrawler lineup brought us to this point in time, and the TCC-2500 is well positioned to lead the telecrawlers into a whole new arena of jobsite opportunities. We identified early on that our customers needed a telecrawler with higher capacities and greater reach,” says Scott Knight, Link-Belt product manager for Lattice and Telescopic Crawler Cranes. The TCC-2500’s offers great job-site flexibility and can lift, reach, and travel like a large fixed boom lattice crawler, while also having the ability to retract the boom and reduce its overall profile as job site

conditions and environment require. The TCC-2500 has a Cummins QSL 9 diesel engine and seven-section formed boom and, overall, establishes a new definition for robust performance for large telescopic crawler cranes. The seven-section 13.8-67.9m pin and latch boom is the longest in class and offers eight simple boom extend modes. The attachments are also impressive with a three-piece offsettable fly that measures 3.6m, 12.1m, and 20.4m and can also be equipped with two 7.62m boom extensions for an overall tip height of 105.46m. These attachments with optional hydraulic luffing allow for “up-and-over” capacity like luffing lattice crawlers. Another key feature of this 250t unit is an extra wide winch design that can handle its maximum permissible line pull through the fourth layer with matching front and rear winches. The rear auxiliary winch can also be removed for weight reduction while transporting the crane. SPECIFICATIONS

INDECO’S NEW STATIC WHEEL COMPACTOR WHY GET IT? REMOVAL WHEELS AND LOCKING WHEEL REMOVAL DESIGN FOR EASY ACCESS TO BEARINGS Combining a higher level of efficiency, economy and maintainability, the new IHW Series of static wheel compactors has been specifically designed to efficiently, safely and economically compact fill material in a trench as it is being back-filled. Achieving greater productivity than dedicated walk-behind units, Indeco’s static wheel compactors fully leverage a fleet’s existing equipment by utilising the excavator, back-hoe or skid-steer applied static weight to quickly achieve compaction density. Jobsite safety is also enhanced as worker time in trenches is dramatically reduced. The outstanding feature of the IHW Series of static wheel compactors is a patent pending locking wheel removal design that facilitates easy field accessibility to the heavy-duty bearings by eliminating traditional weld-type bearing encasements. It’s engineered with specially designed, staggered pads that effectively penetrate trench fill deeper and achieve bottom-up rather than top-down compaction; making the IHW Series ideal for cohesive and clay soil environments where vibratory plate methods may not achieve optimum results. Simple to install and operate due to its purely mechanical design, the IHW Series requires no special hydraulic connections or separate drive systems and is available in a wide variety of models and width sizes to accommodate most excavator brands.

ATLAS COPCO’S FIRST EVER FUELINJECTED BREAKER WHY GET IT? ADDED POWER FROM ELECTRONIC FUEL-INJECTION IN A PETROL BREAKER Atlas Copco is the first to introduce a petrol breaker with electronic fuel injection (EFI), a technology which offers significant benefits for users. The Cobra PROi provides up to 10% more power at all working speeds, while optimal combustion gives up to 10% savings on fuel consumption. The machine is easy to start in almost any climate, or at any altitude, and the breaker requires less routine maintenance. At first glance the new Cobra PROi looks like other petrol breakers in the Cobra range. The only differences are that the trigger with kill-switch has been moved from the left to the right handle, and the kill-switch is now a button. Also, with fuel injection no choke is needed. According to Atlas Copco, the breaker’s unique EFI concept ensures smoother running. An integrated mechanical fuel pump employs a unique system that keeps constant pressure to the regulator without the help of electricity. While standard EFI systems require 3-bar pressure in the fuel system, thanks to custommade injectors the Cobra PROi’s low pressure EFI system needs just 0.2-bar. This approach minimises pressure variations, ensuring smooth running. The machine is also easy to start under any conditions; the Engine Control Unit wakes up during the first revolutions when the user pulls the starter cord. With ease of work in mind, Atlas Copco has designed the Cobra PROi in such a way that hand-arm vibration level on three axes is below 4m/s2. The machine is light, weighing only 24kg, which makes it easier to carry it around. The dimensions also allow it to fit easily in the trunk of a car.

01 READ THE MANUALS Although often overlooked, it pays to read a machine’s operations manual to become familiar with its features, instrumentation, controls, service schedules and maintenance points. Typically stored in an excavator’s cab, the manual contains the manufacturer’s recommendations for optimum usage.

02 DO WALK-AROUNDS EACH DAY Check the undercarriage for cracks in the frame. Make sure all bolts, especially mainframe bolts, are tight. Check chain wear and components. Inspect pin wear regularly to track the percentage of chain wear. Examine hydraulic pistons and components for leaks, clamp tightness, scoring and damage.

OIL MANAGEMENT Maintaining recommended oil change intervals is basic to excavator performance and life. Engine oils, particularly those with additives, can break down under high duty-cycles. Engine oil is no place to save money. Using low quality oils or incorrect viscosity can shorten engine life, causing time-wasting, costly repairs.

39 CHECK FUEL LINES Primary fuel filters have a water separator to remove water-in-suspension within fuel but these water separators require daily inspection and draining. When removing the fuel cap, check for a vacuum, which indicates a clogged tank vent - not unusual in dusty conditions. Before filling, drain some fuel from the bottom of the tank for debris and water to run out until the fuel runs clean.

INSPECT ATTACHMENTS At regular intervals, bring the attachment close to the ground to check all welds and joints for cracks. Stress cracks develop over time; if caught early, they can be easily repaired. Wipe down the inspection area; grease or debris on the attachment often disguises cracks. Also check grease lines, hydraulic cylinders and tubing to spot loose bolts.

USE OEM FILTERS Filters are the most critical components for trouble-free machine performance. Filters sized to the machine provide a clean fuel supply and prevent water and debris from getting into the engine. Avoid the temptation to use non-OEM filters. Clogged filters have the potential to damage fuel transfer pumps.

LUBRICATE ATTACHMENTS Frequent greasing of attachments is key for long pin and bushing life. Pin/bushing tolerances are tight when the machine is new. Miss just one greasing interval and tolerances won’t stay tight. Adding grease later does not stop the wear, so avoid cutting corners.

08

INSPECT COOLING SYSTEM Keep the radiator, oil cooler, and other heat exchangers clean. Oil or coolant leaks can collect dust and debris, which slows air passage and acts as an insulator to lessen heat exchange. Be sure heat shields and insulation in the radiator and engine compartments are in place and in good condition. Replace coolants as per recommendations.

SUPER SCOOPERS

AS THE BACKBONE OF THE CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY SECTOR, NO MACHINE IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE EXCAVATOR, AND ITS MAJOR EXPONENTS TELL CMME HOW THEY ARE GEARING UP TO FACE THE DEMANDS OF THE MARKET WITH THEIR EXISTING MACHINES AND NEW LAUNCHES

T

he excavator is perhaps the most important piece of construction equipment globally and is similarly one of most important segments for the industry in the region. The biggest names in the Middle East and GCC region’s excavator segment are, of course, the who’s-who of the global construction machinery industry. Popular worldwide, brands such as Volvo CE, Caterpillar, Hitachi and Case, are equally sought after in the region. “It is a must to have excavators in any infrastructure and mining business. Al-Bahar offers the widest selection of Cat excavators in its territories, with the most advanced and durable hydraulics system making them highly customisable for specific needs,” says Samer Ismail, product manager, Earthmoving and Excavation, at Al-Bahar, the Caterpillar dealer in the region. “The excavation segment is 20-25% of our business. Cat excavators offered by Al-Bahar are ideal for extremely demanding job-sites, making them reliable options among our customers. The demand comes primarily from the construction and mining segments.” While requirements come in all sizes, medium-sized excavators are most in demand. “We offer models in five different categories, namely Mini, Compact, Medium, Large Excavators, and Hydraulic Mining Shovels. The 22t excavator is our most popular machine, with a 1.2 cubic metre bucket capacity.” The 320D2 L Hydraulic Excavator with the C7.1 engine is one of the most popular excavators in the Cat range. “It is ideal for applications in the general construction segment, like truck loading, trenching, lifting and hammering. Configured for heavy construction, the model’s popularity comes from its reliability, durability, serviceability, productivity and fuel efficiency, coupled with its resale value and the support services offered by Al-Bahar,” he adds. Caterpillar has also introduced the 340D2 L Hydraulic Excavator - a 41.5t machine that comes with 2.4 cubic metre bucket capacity, which can easily support a 4t hammer. It delivers excellent productivity with low owning and operating costs, and can be used in a wide range of applications, making it an extremely versatile machine, Ismail explains. “Customers and their specific demands have always been our focus at Al-Bahar. We care about their opinions, and attribute our success to them. Hence, we continuously work to meet customer expectations, delivering the latest and recent machinery solutions,” he adds. Swede success With around 75 years of technical know-how and excavator experience, Volvo CE’s excavators are a core piece of equipment in its portfolio. “That’s why there has been heavy investment on the product’s development over the years to produce one of the world’s finest earthmoving machines and to distinguish it against the competition through innovation, enhanced performance, productivity and fuel efficiency,” says Vladimir Knezevic, managing director of

COVER STORY JANUARY 2017

BOBCAT’S COMPACT E20

SMALL WONDER IN OMAN

Oman National Engineering & Investment Co. based in Muscat in Oman, has taken delivery of the first mini-excavators to be sold in the country, comprising 20 new Bobcat E20 compact excavators supplied by International Heavy Equipment LLC (IHE). Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East and Africa, for Bobcat, said: “We are delighted with this order, which is the result of pioneering work by Bobcat and IHE to introduce the mini-excavator concept in Oman. This tender was won by a joint effort between IHE and Bobcat, involving our staff in Dubai and Doosan Bobcat management including Jose Cuadrado, Vice President Compact Equipment – EMEA, who was part of our team which visited SAOG prior to winning the order.“ Oman National Engineering & Investment Co. was formed in 1978 to manage the Rural Electricity System for the Ministry of Electricity & Water. For more than 35 years, the company has served hundreds of thousands of customers across the country and today is a leading supplier of services to the utility and engineering sectors in Oman. Operating from the Gala area of Muscat, IHE is the trucks, buses and equipment company of The Zubair Corporation and has been the authorised distributor for Bobcat in Oman for well over 25 years. The Bobcat E20 2 tonne model is a Zero Housing Swing (ZHS) excavator, which means that it offers enhanced Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) functionality by further protecting the front upper structure corners turning within the swing circle. The ZHS configuration in the E20 excavator therefore provides 320° of free rotation when working close to structures, without sacrificing on operator comfort or performance. Oman National Engineering & Investment Co. chose the Bobcat E20 excavator because it is a state-of-the-art machine that provides a perfect balance uniting all the benefits of the ZHS design with the high performance and stability expected of a market-leading 2 tonne conventional tail swing excavator. According to Bobcat, the E20 compact excavator provides an unmatched combination of class-leading breakout forces, working range, smoothness of workgroup functions, hydraulic output and fast cycle times, centred around a roomy and comfortable operator environment, durability and excellent service access.

machinery powerhouse FAMCO, Volvo CE’s dealer in the region. “Excavators are almost one third of the construction equipment business in the GCC/ Middle East region. For us, around 90% of the volume comes from the heavy tracked range, while the remaining 10% is split almost equally between the wheeled and compact.” The biggest demand in Volvo’s stable is for the 20t to 22t models followed by 40t to 50t, he adds. Medium-sized excavators rule the roost in the GCC, and Volvo’s EC210BLC Prime tracked excavator, with an average operating weight of 22t and a ‘General Purpose’ bucket size of 1 cubic metre, is king. “It is our most popular machine, used on general medium duty excavation jobs. It can support many attachments, such as hydraulic breakers, and its popularity against the competition is mainly due to a better build quality and features, better serviceability and ease of use. And higher productivity and uptime,” Knezevic says. To make owning a Volvo CE excavator easier, FAMCO has started ‘Big 3’, a new three-year “lease-to-own” financing scheme packaged with a three-year service contract and extended warranty. Customers have the benefit of FAMCO’s uptime assurance through its service and warranty back-up, and can opt to own the machine, return it or get a new one through a similar contract. At the beginning of 2016, FAMCO introduced Volvo CE’s new excavator model, the EC750D, representing the new D-Series with enhanced design and specifications to ensure the lowest total cost of ownership. “Behind its increased productivity and bestin-class fuel efficiency is Volvo CE’s advanced electro-hydraulic systems and unique Eco-Mode that complement its powerful D16 engine. It also sports a reinforced

undercarriage structure and best-in-class ergonomics in the cabin, which adds to the operator’s productivity,“ Knezevic says. Soon to be brought to the region is the new Volvo EC950EL excavator. “We believe it will effectively contribute to our customers’ benefits by providing the highest productivity in the mining and quarry sectors, as well as bring the most advanced technology and experience to the industry,” he reveals. Equally optimistic about its excavators is Japanese giant Hitachi. “The quality of our machines is very important to us, which means that we are not making any concessions, like stripping features for a lower market price. We stick to our quality and prices and the ‘Made in Japan’ label is very important for us,” says Piet Hein van Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East . To maximise the total cost of ownership, he adds, Hitachi makes sure to keep a customer as close as possible after a sale is made. “We work with service contracts; we are proactive in looking after the machines and we go to the remotest areas and job sites to service our customers’ machines,” Bakergem says. “We are training and qualifying our dealerships to perform all tasks related to Hitachi equipment up to our high standards, providing everything needed to make it a water-proof operation. Our goal is to ensure a strong positive feedback from customers.” Over at Case construction equipment, meanwhile, a range of excavators covers a broad spectrum of the market, from 30t to 80t. Steve Ryder, Case’s field marketing manager for the region, feels his company’s machines have the right technology for the market, backed by the right support. “The No.1 thing is quality and reliability, which our Japanese desigend and made

43 The importance of large excavators in the Middle East market has led global majors such as Volvo CE, Caterpillar, Hitachi and Case to bring their biggest to the region.

excavators enjoy to the fullest. The second point is the whole integration of the system such as how well the hydraulics are matched to the engine power. With Case you get a very precise control of the machine, increasing productivity and efficiency,” says Ryder, who is hopeful of an uptick in the market in 2017. Going mini In the GCC, mini-excavators are still not as popular as in markets such as Europe, where their compactness and versatility makes them core products. But that’s changing. FAMCO’s Knezevic says: “We have seen some increase in demand for Volvo’s miniexcavators, especially in the 5-5.5t segment in which our EC55C has been well received in the market. It is our most popular miniexcavator due to its compact size, versatility, ease of operation and multi-tasking ability, with support for various attachments.” Al-Bahar has also seen a small rise in demand for Cat’s mini-excavators. “We offer a wide range of Cat mini and micro excavators. from 1-7t. Typical applications include trenching in confined areas, and pipeline installations,” says Mamoun T. Mutair, product manager, Building Construction & Paving, at Al-Bahar. The popular Cat 303.5E mini hydraulic excavator has features such as continuous flow for auxiliary hydraulics and a new dual lock hydraulic coupler, he adds.
