a year for change Twelve months ago, when I sat down to write my editorial for the first issue of 2017, the mood in the Middle East’s construction sector was gloomy. After weathering two consecutive years of market shrinkage, there was a sense of despair among the region’s equipment sellers. And, with 2017 not promising anything new, a sense of resignation as well. As a publication that keenly observes and records the sector, CMME was not too hopeful that the next 12 months would bring any glad tidings. No matter who we spoke to in the industry, the prevailing sombre mood refused to lift. Rival manufacturers, who rarely saw eye to eye where their competing machines and products were concerned, now readily agreed with each other that the times were rough. That was 12 months ago. Now, as I write my first editorial of 2018, there are indications that the sense of gloom that pervaded the industry then is starting to lift. A subtle mood shift started to happen towards the end of last year. We felt it first when new machines started being introduced by the OEMs, both globally and for the Middle East as well. For example, the beginning of the fourth quarter saw Caterpillar make a song and dance about its new 20t excavator family, which, while being a global release, was developed keeping the Middle East very much in mind. Meanwhile, Bobcat brought in new compact tracked loaders and telehandlers to the region and SDLG made a spate of launches targeted at the Middle East, which included wheel loaders, compactors and a backhoe loader. By the end of the year, people in the industry sounded more enthusiastic. Some, such as Genavco, had genuine reasons for their enthusiasm, based on solid sales figures. As our story on crushers and screeners in

this issue shows, a mainly uneventful 2017 gave them a parting gift when they finalised a multi-million-dollar deal for a crushing plant. And there’s more in the offing already in 2018. This sentiment is shared by others as well. As can be read elsewhere in this issue, the excavator sector is feeling upbeat after a long time. As the industry bellwether, excavators personify the health of the sector. When they are doing well, it’s an unfailing indicator of a generally healthy industry. But to remain healthy, the equipment sector needs to feed on a regular diet of new projects, which look ready to be served up this year. Work is on apace at the Dubai’s Expo 2020 site, its new Metro line and a plethora of UAE road projects. Qatar is forging ahead with the infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup. And even Saudi, the harbinger of doom until recently, has announced increased public spending on infrastructure in its latest budget with promises of expanding public expenditure further year-on-year. As a stakeholder in the sector, CMME would like nothing more than to be able to bring you more good news in the coming months, so that 2018 can be for us, you and everyone in this industry, which is our bread and butter, a Happy New Year!

I came across a very interesting piece of news on your site in December. The announcement that Abu Dhabi’s Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities will launch a new registration system for all engineers in the emirate is a very clever and useful initiative. Having all the engineers who are working and living in the emirate register their qualifications with the department’s website is an important step in increasing the professionalism and performance of the engineering sector. In fact, I really hope that this is something that will be picked up in the other emirates in the UAE, as I believe it will set a clear benchmark for the construction and engineering industry within the country. Thinking bigger, I really hope that we will then see this initiative taken up by the rest of the GCC countries. If this happens, it will create a cross-country database that will allow best practices to grow across the region. Furthermore, I hope this information will be made accessible to private sector employers. I think that this will allow for the smoother transfer of skills as well as employees between construction firms. Name withheld by request

Caterpillar has expanded its range of industrial engines with the addition of two more models – the 12.5l C13B and the updated 9.3l C9.3B. The six-cylinder C13B combines upgraded air, electrical and after-treatment systems to produce a 340430kW range of power and up to 2640Nm of torque out of a package that is 30% lighter at these performance levels, compared to previous models, said the company. As with all Caterpillar 9-18l engines,

the C13B will be offered in a number of configurations to enable OEM customers reduce installation costs. “Our customers expect reliability and durability, but they need it from a simpler, lighter package with more power, and that’s what we’re giving them with our new engines,” said Jeff Moore, Cat product manager. Specialist German door and gate manufacturer Hormann has introduced a new line of automatic bollards for the Middle East and Africa region which offer varying levels of control for frequency and security. The first version features an integrated electromechanical operator for average use frequencies and the second comes with an integrated hydraulic operator for very frequent use, while the third is an automatic bollard with reinforced cylinder material that offers particularly high protection for greater security. Intermat research predicts huge infrastructure spend in EMEA The European, Middle Eastern and African markets will invest a total of $1.898 trillion on infrastructure projects in the next 30 to 40 years, according to research by the Intermat trade exhibition, which will take place in Paris April 23-28. Europe alone will spend $1.097tn on key infrastructure projects up to 2050, according to the first Construction Industry Observatory, a report unveiled by Intermat organisers and produced in association with Business France, the French government’s agency for export support and inwardinvestment promotion. The report provides construction equipment manufacturers with strategic data on 12 countries

in the EMEA zone, handpicked for their planned investment levels in infrastructure, public works and buildings. Isabelle Alfano, exhibition director, Intermat, said: “The Europe, Middle East & Africa zone that we cover holds a

wealth of opportunities for companies in the sector. With the Intermat Observatory, we are offering all our partners an up-to-date working tool to support them in their development plans in high-potential markets.”

The report analyses each country’s domestic investment plans, both ongoing and for the period from 2025 to 2030, and is divided into sectors: airports, buildings, railways, mining and quarries, ports, roads and transport. It offers an overview of the major projects, the cross-border flows of construction equipment – imports and exports – and the foreign corporate names established in each country. Of special interest to the Middle East is the report’s study of the UAE and Qatar, which plan to invest a total of around $284bn combined between now and 2033. billion. The two most promising sectors are buildings and roads.

VancouVer challenge for Terex Tower

D

espite their challenges, several different crane options usually fit the straightforward lifting needs of new construction projects. Reconstruction, however, is another kettle of fish. Often based in cities with obstacles in the way, hemmed in by surrounding structures and with busy streets impeding access, selecting the right crane is much more difficult and vital. This was precisely the challenge for contractor Smith Bros. & Wilson (BC) Ltd. (SBW) of Vancouver, in the demolition and reconstruction of the eighth and ninth floors at the downtown Vancouver Public Library (VPL) to make additional library space, meeting rooms and an urban green space while keeping the library open. “All the demolition material had to be removed and...during the tender phase, we saw the need to hoist many items, including large-span escalators to get people up to the green space. It was quite a challenging prospect,” explains Tyler Brown, general superintendent for SBW. Dean Arsene, rental and sales person for Terex Cranes distributor Leavitt Machinery, adds: “We started discussing the project with SBW in late 2016. All options were reviewed.” SBW initially considered mobile cranes for the heavy lifting from street level, but several drawbacks made planners rethink the option. “By the time we counted everything that needed to be hoisted, a mobile crane was cost-prohibitive,” says Brown.

For SBW, the only cost-efficient option on the project was a luffing jib tower crane, and the Terex CTL 43024 offered the reach and capacity for the job. “Through our discussions with Leavitt, we calculated the luffing jib as the most economical hoisting logistics solution for us,” explains Brown. Winning the bid with a CTL 430-24 crane, SBW entered into a six-month rental agreement with Leavitt for the 26.5t-class Terex luffing jib tower crane. Its tower required seven HD23 22.6 segments to reach the needed jib base height of 45m. To cover the entire site, the crane was equipped with a 55m jib. A 15-degree in-service radius was used in the project to lift materials to and from the rooftop. “When the crane was not in service, the jib was set to a 65-degree radius to allow it to slew without hitting any of the adjacent structures,” Arsene explains. “Using a 350t mobile crane, we installed the tower, counter jib and apex on day one. On day two, we installed the jib and counterweight.” In demolition, the crane removed large structural pieces and concrete from the rooftop. During reconstruction, it hoisted large building materials and full concrete buckets from street level to the eighth and ninth floors. The largest and heaviest planned lifts were the two 5.4t escalators, lifted into position without disassembly to save time and money. “The type of crane we are using is proving to be key for our success, and the CTL 430-24 is working great for us and doing its job,” Brown adds.

When AI meeTs consTrucTIon

With ever-increasing data creation on construction job-sites helping machine learning, volvo ce predicts the future of the construction industry rests With artificial intelligence, Which Will improve speed, efficiency and safety

T

he potential of artificial intelligence (AI) is high on the social agenda. Seemingly everyone from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to Tesla CEO Elon Musk has an opinion on its impact on our everyday lives. But how will the technology of today affect the construction of tomorrow? Once confined to the pages of science fiction novels, AI has now become a reality that cannot be ignored. In many ways, we are already using AI, from the news feed we read on our smartphones to the software that enables us to shop online securely. We no longer see AI as a far-fetched concept resigned to our imaginations; it is something we experience and benefit from every day. The advantages of AI are limitless and permeate not just our everyday lives, but all industries. For the automotive industry, the launch of self-driving cars means a faster mode of transportation and a significant reduction in accidents and emissions. A similar statement can be made about the construction industry. Early adopters are already using the technology to increase the efficiency, safety, and quality of construction projects. So what exactly is AI? It is a collective term used to describe a machine mimicking human cognitive functions like problem-solving, learning and pattern recognition. AI includes a process called machine learning, whereby algorithms are used to enable a machine to learn from the data it is exposed to. Therefore, the more data to which a machine is exposed, the better it becomes at understanding and providing insights. In a time when humans are increasing data creation every day, AI provides an endless resource for machines to learn and adapt. But how does that translate to the construction industry? The volume of data generated on an average construction site is growing, from images captured on mobile devices to drone videos, security sensors, machine telematics, Building Information Modelling (BIM)

17 Equipment makers are developing AI algorithms which use computer vision methods and advanced systems to warn operators, reducing the risk of accidents.

“AI techniques can help inexperienced machine operators to carry out complex tasks which they otherwise could not. It’s advantageous in an industry that’s finding it increasingly difficult to source highly skilled and experienced operators”

and more. The main challenge, however, is not capturing all the data, but rather implementing a system capable of managing the information and allowing users to make the most out of it. AI programs deliver precise data and insights, helping construction contractors maximise the safety, value and productivity of work-sites. For example, Smartvid.io – a photo and video management platform used by construction companies such as Skanska and Arup – uses AI to sift through mass quantities of images and videos taken at a construction site and spot potential hazards. The software uses image recognition algorithms to identify specific search criteria like hard hats, safety vests and hi-visibility colours, so it can unearth images to highlight construction workers not wearing the proper safety attire or possibly violating safety guidelines. Within a matter of minutes, the search results are collected, collated and delivered to a site supervisor – a task that would otherwise take several hours. Manufacturers like Volvo Construction Equipment are exploring how emerging technologies can increase the safety of jobsite personnel. After launching Compact Assist in 2015, an operator assist program, Volvo CE is now developing AI algorithms which detect and decipher specific objects using several computer vision methods. The advanced system sends a warning message to the operator to reduce the risk of accidents. As well as increasing safety, AI has many other benefits, like performing mundane, repetitive and sometimes dangerous labourintensive tasks. Dr Fares Beainy, machine intelligence programme leader at Volvo CE, says: “AI techniques can help inexperienced machine operators to carry out complex tasks which they otherwise could not. It’s advantageous in an industry that’s finding it increasingly difficult to source highly skilled and experienced operators.” Research suggests that in coming years some jobs could be automated, leaving many people to worry about their future employment. But it turns out the rise in AI is not as terrifying as science fiction would have us believe. Autonomous machines are simply part of evolution, according to Dr Beainy. “When the first hydraulic machine was introduced, people had similar apprehensions. But with change came new opportunities. The same phenomenon is happening with the introduction of AI. It will be gradual, but by the time intelligent and autonomous machines are implemented into construction, new jobs will have been created to complement them.”

onstruction equipment manufacturer, distributor and services provider Red Falcon International General Trading shot to prominence on the country’s construction equipment scene last year when it made a major delivery of tower cranes to well-known contractor Al Shafar General Contracting Company (ASGC). It was a sign that the manufacturer and distributor of new and used machinery had matured in the Middle East market during the decade since it set up its regional shop in Sharjah in 2008. Speaking about the company, its history and recent successes, GM Muhammad Anwer says: “Since we started our operations in 2008, we have been on a continuous growth path. We have rapidly increased our clientele base in the Middle East, especially in the UAE, with the help of our service offerings. Apart from being a seller of construction equipment such as tower cranes, construction hoists, suspended platforms, concrete pumps and placing booms under our own Red Falcon trade mark, we also provide after-sales services and back-up for a variety of equipment classes.” A major milestone moment in the company’s history came last year, Anwer explains, when Red Falcon completed the delivery of 12 of its tower cranes to ASGC. The order was one of the largest of its kind on the market, consisting of seven topless tower cranes with capacities of 16t each and five more similar models with capacities in the 10t range. “Arranging the delivery of the cranes was no mean feat,” Anwer says. “The logistics part of the delivery of the 12 towers required roughly 100 containers to ship in the cranes’ components in a knocked-down form from our factory in China. The delivery was completed within

45 days, and we also arranged a team of engineers from our manufacturing base in in China to come in and supervise the erection and commissioning job at ASGC’s various job-sites.” The significance of the order increased with the stature of the client. “ASGC is an important and respected contracting company in the region, with many prestigious projects under its belt. To be chosen to supply an order of 12 tower cranes for their builds at one go is an indication that Red Falcon is a company that can rise to the challenge of supporting the biggest builders and projects in the region,” Anwer points out. Anwer says Red Falcon’s operations are divided into nine different divisions: construction equipment, spare parts, service, rental, lifting equipment, industrial equipment, indenting equipment, used equipment and export. “We have a dedicated service team of engineers and technicians at Red Falcon who provide our customers with full services in erecting, dismantling, troubleshooting and repairing tower cranes, as well as assisting in the same way for construction hoists, placing booms, concrete pumps and suspended platforms, among other jobs.” Red Falcon is celebrating the first decade of its successful operations in GCC with several new projects and plans. “We are now diversifying our business into industrial equipment as well and broadening the spectrum of our operations. In addition, we have also tied up with some European manufacturers for industrial products such as electric motors, reducers and gearboxes, among other items,” Anwer says, adding that the firm has recently entered into cooperation agreements with JAC Forklift Trucks, Magni Telehandlers and INVT Inverters. Buoyed by its latest success in the tower crane segment and by operations in the region hitting the significant 10-year milestone, Red Falcon is looking to more success in the future as it expands its footprint in the region with more product and service offerings.

i

f you were a piece of compact construction equipment such as a skid-steer loader, a mini excavator, a compact tracked loader or a telehandler, there’s a place a little distance outside the Czech Republic’s capital city Prague where you would fear to tread. It’s a medieval torture chamber masquerading as a state-of-theart technical and engineering centre, where Bobcat sharpens its claws and fangs to hunt down and take on its competition in the global market. A place where the small cat’s machines are pounded, pummelled, baked, frozen, stretched, pulled, dropped, whipped and generally beaten to within inches of their lives. Whatever survives the torture and emerges in one piece is then ready to take on anything the world can throw at it, laugh at the face of the toughest job-site adversity and sink its claws and canines into the competition’s jugular. These machines are then either pronounced fit for the market or, if they are prototypes, fit to be sent for production. We are talking here of Bobcat’s Innovation Centre in Dobris, a small town 40km southwest of Prague. Under the centre’s 9,400sqm roof are many areas neatly parcelled into spaces for designing, prototyping, testing and validating new and existing machines and technologies. The largest space by far is taken up by the 8,000sqm shop floor, where new model designs are given shape from the ground up as prototypes and then fully built-up machines. These then go through rigorous testing and validation processes that subject all imaginable parameters of both new and existing production models to the most extreme of conditions and scenarios, in tests that leave nothing to chance. After passing through the hellfire that the testing and validation inflicts, the machines are ready to sport the Bobcat badge. Taking CMME on a guided tour of this technological pain pit are Dobroslav Rak, Bobcat vice president, Engineering for the EMEA market and head of the Innovation Centre, and Martin Siska, test laboratory leader. “Bobcat has been here in Dobris since 2001 and we have been engaged in engineering and development activities since 2003, when the Bobcat Czech Development Centre was established. Then a few years down the line, we opened this facility, the Bobcat Innovation Centre,” says Rak, beginning the tour. “Opened in 2015, the Innovation Centre offers world-class innovation in all areas of Doosan Bobcat’s business, speeding up the introduction of new products to the market and guaranteeing maximum quality,

reliability and durability for our machines. Our engineering teams in the centre provide comprehensive development of compact construction machinery, comprising skid-steer loaders, compact excavators, telescopic handlers and attachments for these machines, for customers around the world. We are also responsible for Doosan Portable Power Engineering in EMEA, covering the development of new portable compressors, generators and lighting towers.” Centre of excellence “The mission for this Innovation Centre is to be the European centre of excellence for product design, development and validation. Our main task here is to ensure that the products we develop are meeting all the regulatory and standard requirements, and on top of that to make sure that all the performance and parameters we offer our customers are fully validated and all that we are guaranteeing is delivered. One of the most important things that this centre enables us to do is to test, validate and guarantee all the claims that we make about our machines when compared to the competition.” Rak then takes us inside the centre shop floor, divided into two separate areas, for developing prototypes and for testing and validation. Of the second area, Siska says: “This is where the magic happens that makes a Bobcat a Bobcat. What you see here are some of the toughest and most extensive testing facilities in the industry. We make sure that all the new models we develop are tested under the most stringent conditions and exacting standards. The same stringency and exactitude is extended to serial production models, which we also test here. Samples of all models we produce are randomly selected after they leave the assembly line and then subjected to the battery of tests we have here to prove their quality and fitness.” Rak elaborates: “We have tests for all our specifications and performance parameters, as well as plenty of special testing. One of the classical tests which a lot of our competitors do not do is the stability test, where we test our Bobcat machines for physical stability. A specially designed tilt-table is used for the test.” The tilt-table he points to can be moved around two axes simultaneously, which gives it a range of motion with constantly changing angles on the horizontal and vertical planes, simulating steep inclines both sideways across the equipment as well as from front to back. The whole machine is rocked from front and back and side to side,

22

with strong forces acting on it, shaking it to its core to test its stability. The next test area is the digging pit, a 9m-deep hole in the concrete floor which Rak says is essentially an actual physical test that ensures an excavator or a loader has the digging or loading performance it is designed to offer. Next is a general testing area with special grids on which a variety of tests can be conducted. Pointing to one of the bays, Rak says: “This is the designated spot for testing a machine’s braking force. We put the unit in a load cell and test its braking. Here we can use various load combinations to simulate real-time job-site situations. We also do a lot of static loading tests here, as well as the tests for the roll-over protection system (ROPS) and the falling object protection system (FOPS), which are mandatory safety tests that every model needs to be certified as passing. We test the cabins and canopies of our machines to ascertain the safety and security of the operators in the event of an accident.” Behind him a skid steer loader cabin is being pummelled by a heavy weight on one side, then the other, then from front and back, and finally from the top, with the force increasing cumulatively from three axes. This tests the cabin’s structural integrity and how it responds to rolling over as well as falling over. A crash test dummy sits inside the cab. “Some deformation of the structure is permissible, but that’s about the tolerance that is allowed. There cannot be a physical disconnection of the structure or a crack, and no part of the dummy must come in contact with any part of the cabin at any stage.” Rak explains. Showing a recently tested skid steer loader cabin which looks like it has been punched to the point of deformity by the fist of the Incredible Hulk himself, he points out: “You can see that despite being out of shape, this cabin has passed the test because it was proved that the dummy, which is the simulated body of the operator, was not touched by the collapsing cabin.” In another bay, a test of particular importance to customers in the Middle East is ongoing. “Our Middle East customers asked us to make some improvements on the engine side for greater reliability in dusty conditions, and so we’re testing it to make sure the engine performs on job-sites out in the middle of the dusty desert.” This is not the only test to validate desertworthiness. The Innovation Centre has an outdoor proving ground, part of which has been done up to simulate the dusty and sandy conditions of the Middle East.

Headed by Dobroslav Rak, vice president, Engineering, EMEA, the Innovation Centre is Bobcat’s hub for quality assurance and product development.

23 “The mission for this Innovation Centre is to be a centre of excellence for product design, development and validation. Our main task here is to ensure that… all the performance and parameters we offer are fully validated and all that we are guaranteeing is delivered”

“We also test our machines for every imaginable geographical condition. Our Middle East customers will surely be delighted to note that whenever we develop a model which will be sold in the Middle East, it undergoes extensive testing in this area of our proving grounds for days on end. We check how the machine is responding to the dust and sand, the wear and tear, the abrasion and various other parameters. We gather extensive data which is then analysed and tabulated, and the machine is tweaked and fine-tuned according to the indications we get in the analysis to get a more robust product, better suited to its operating environment,” Rak explains. Meanwhile, in a testing area adjacent to the ROPS and FOPS testing bay, a compact tracked loader is being put through its paces. The engine hums steadily, then groans and shudders and suddenly starts a whine as the bucket lifts, makes a loading and unloading motion and comes back to rest. The engine returns to its hum, only for the cycle to be repeated shortly. This cycle has been going on for some time now, says Siska. “What you’re seeing is our 24-hour running test, with simulated cycles of full load. The machine will be kept running for all of 24 hours non-stop, with loading cycles introduced at frequent intervals to check its response to non-stop use.” Behaviour under continuous use is tested in the next station as well, but this time of the cabin controls. An electronic robotic operator is hooked up to a skidsteer loader’s controls, which it proceeds to crank up to full speed followed by idle, full speed again and then idle again. The cycle is repeated endless times to check that the response available from the operator controls is consistent and precise. Extensive field testing “Whenever we launch a new model, we take the first 100-150 machines from the production line and put them into the proving ground for field testing for 1,000 hours. This enables us to make sure that the production run to follow will be in top shape and reach our customers as troublefree machines,” says Rak. Also, after a machine comes in from testing on the proving grounds, it is completely disassembled and each part is checked for wear and tear and other signs. The finds are documented and sent to the engineers for review, giving them a complete picture of the performance of the equipment. All machines are also washed in a special chamber used to simulate rain, to test water resistance. “The climate chamber is a vitally important

3-D PrinteD Parts

speed, economy And quAlity control

Bobcat’s Dobris Innovation Centre uses a state-of-the-art 3D printer which enables it to quickly print the parts and components necessary for its prototypes, cutting down on product development time and cost, says centre head Dobroslav Rak. Pointing to the simulated counterweight of an excavator prototype being built, he says: “We made this component as a complete 3D print for one of our prototypes before we went to a supplier for the final casting. “Before we had this 3-D printer, it took us a long time to get some components made from our suppliers, because he had to tool up first for a new design and then to fine tune it to make it fit our requirements exactly. Now we print a component off our 3D printer and then fit it on the prototype. If it turns out to be not exactly what the designers had in mind, then we fine tune it in-house and reprint the final version, which we can send to our casting supplier so that he can give us the right final component the very first time, saving both time and money for all parties. “Some of the prototype components we use our 3-D printer for are the hydraulic tanks, counterweights and covers, so this is just a small example of how useful this tool is in the development of our prototypes.” Along with the 3D printing of prototype parts, the Innovation Centre is also fully independent in the production of the vital hydraulic components, Rak adds. “Our hydraulic shop can produce all the tubes, hoses, connectors and other components that we need. We do not rely on any supplier and can do everything in-house.”

test room for our equipment. As a global manufacturer, we sell our products in countries with various climatic conditions which can be extremely cold to extremely hot. In this chamber we simulate those extreme conditions and see how our machines cope with them. We can bring the temperature down to -40 degrees Celsius in this room and then raise it to a blistering 60 degrees. So this is very important for a market like the Middle East, where job-site conditions can get extremely hot. In fact, we also test out the cab heating and cooling in this room to ensure operator comfort in those extreme temperatures,” Rak explains. In another chamber, cooling systems are thoroughly tested. The units are run at high rpms while loading is simulated. All the while the operation of the cooling system is monitored, to make sure the unit can cool the engine, the hydraulic fluid and other components adequately and continue operating. “This is an area which should reassure our Middle East customers that our products are all tested as ready to work in the hot desert summer,” says Siska. “We test our machines with full loads in simulated hot conditions within our test chambers. Not every manufacturer has this capability and so we consider this as a competitive advantage, especially where catering to the Middle East is concerned. While our competitors are only calculating the figures for the engine and hydraulic cooling, we do the real testing to prove our figures.” The piece de resistance of the Innovation Centre is the noise testing chamber. One of Bobcat’s goals is to develop machines with ever decreasing noise levels, for which noise testing is a prerequisite. “We used to measure our machines’ noise levels outdoors in an airport. We had a lot of trouble during the tests because of various elements such as the weather. The rain, the wind, the aircraft, other ambient noises interfered with our testing. Also, temperature differences gave us different results each time. This is the reason we built this chamber,” says Siska. “The noise chamber’s design allows it to have a 10m hemispherical radius around a machine placed in its centre. We have placed six microphones in the chamber on the 10m hemispherical radius line. In the centre, where the machine is to be placed, there are four rotating cylinders built into the floor to simulate roading of the machine under various conditions, reaching speeds of up to 80km/h. This helps us know what the noise level of the machine is and measure it to the exact decibel. Here we have complete

control over the test environment, from weather factors, temperature and humidity to terrain simulation, and of course zero ambient noise.” When CMME visits the chamber, an S450 skid-steer stands in the middle of the cavernous room, walls lined by a special 1.5m-deep foam material which absorbs sound. So effective is the insulation that the inside of the chamber is eerily, spookily quiet. Upon entering the chamber, the silence at once seems to be hanging heavy in the air, like an unseen fog so thick it can seemingly be cut with a knife. “One of the rules which we must adhere to is consistency in production, and every year we test samples from off the production line. Typically, we use five samples for the noise testing of each model. This means tens and dozens of tests because we must do it for our entire production range of loaders, excavators and telehandlers, because it is mandatory to check the consistency of production to make sure we deliver the same high standard of machines again and again without fail. And that’s why we are testing here a serial production machine today,” says Rak. “Before we built this chamber, it took us more than three months to do all the tests that we had to do on the samples. Now we are able to do all the regulatory testing for the consistency of production within one week – a significant efficiency improvement. So the $460,000 we invested on building this chamber was worth it, as was the $17.5m that the entire Innovation Centre cost us to build. Every year, we test 45 serial production machines plus the prototypes and developmental models. Those 45 comprise a sample of every production model of the factory.” At Bobcat, constantly evolving best practices and adopting the latest is a given. Not just the machines being tested, but even the tests themselves are evaluated to check whether they are serving the company’s purpose and giving it better quality. At Bobcat, there are tests for the tests. Investing in constant testing to improve efficiency of machines is a given in the industry, but only a dedicated manufacturer evaluates its tests constantly and improves them along with the testing facilities. In the future, testing standards at the Innovation Centre are expected to keep a step ahead of industry standards and become even more stringent. For the machines, there is no respite from the torture – but the bright side is that once you’ve gone through fire and brimstone, the actual job-site is a cakewalk.

MACHINE FOCUS JANUARY 2018

Awesome foursome

CMME takes a look back to pick four models introduced into the middle east last year and discuss their special appeal

T

he year gone by was a time when the Middle East construction equipment industry was in transition. While the years immediately preceding 2017 were mainly slow, this year is expected by many in the industry to be the beginning of a turnaround that should see the market rise to meet the demand from projects such as Dubai’s Expo 2020 and Qatar’s World Cup 2022. And with Saudi Arabia announcing increased public spending in its latest budget, the region’s biggest market – and its backbone – is showing signs of strength as well. Many manufacturers used the transition phase last year to bring in new models to the region. While some were new ones from the ground up, designed specifically for the region, others were models that were already doing well in other geographies and were found suitable for introduction in the Middle East with the moment turning opportune. CMME picks the four models among the 2017 introductions that we think are the most important and seminal, and that can be expected to have a substantial impact on the market.

When Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR) took delivery of three Genie Z-60/37 DC booms, it underlined a shift towards maturity in the regional market. That maturity is seeing it move, after a few decades of frantic building, into a mixed phase of maintenance of what has already been built, while continuing to add more new structures. In this scenario, machines designed for maintenance work have assumed equal importance to the big earth movers and cranes. And when that maintenance work has to go indoors, as it is naturally bound to, the only option is equipment that has no emissions. In other words, all-electric machines. Genie describes the Z-60/37 DC as a new generation 2-in-1 which “allows operators to work indoors and outdoors with a single unit without sacrificing drive performance, to provide high rates of machine utilisation”, according to Genie’s Charbel Kordahi, managing and sales director of Terex Middle East. Offering the advantages of zero emissions and full workday operation on just one charge, the new articulating Z-60/37DC boom is ideal for indoor and outdoor applications such

as industrial plants, malls, convention centres and construction sites, Genie says. Thanks to its fast recharging capabilities, offering a full charge from an 110V/220V wall power supply in less than 12 hours, operators have a very productive machine in hand. Nishad Abdulla, assistant fleet manager at DPR, explains: “Thanks to its excellent range of motion, versatile, quiet, clean performance and four-wheel drive abilities, this new Genie model is an excellent and cost-effective alternative to separate diesel and electric powered units. For us, the Z-60/37DC boom definitely ticks all the right boxes. “Offering the ability to adapt to our broad spectrum of architectural styles, its narrow footprint, four-wheel drive capabilities and all-terrain, nonmarking tyres are an excellent match for work outdoors on rough ground and indoors on fragile surfaces where space is often limited. And since the resort is already open to the public, low noise levels and emissions-free operation are an absolute must-have.” Powered by sealed threephase fully enclosed AC electric motors, the Z-60/37DC is a 4WD machine that’s 25% faster than its diesel counterparts.

BoBcat’s new compact telehandler Why get it? CompaCt dimensions, hydrostatiC transmission, Class-leading reaCh and lift CapaCity Bobcat new TL30.70 compact telehandler has a maximum lift capacity of 3t and maximum lift height of 7m, and is a cost-effective alternative to larger 7m models, especially in tight working spaces requiring increased manoeuvrability. It has a maximum reach of 4m with a 1t load, among the leading figures in its class, according to Bobcat. At maximum lift height, it can lift up to 2t, which is sufficient to place a pallet of heavy bricks in most conditions. Bobcat says the compactness and stability of the TL30.70 will make this machine a perfect tool for easy pick-and-go or for lifting materials to height on housing and commercial property developments. Like all Bobcat telehandlers, the TL30.70 has a heavy-duty hydrostatic transmission that allows smooth and precise low-speed travel, with the ability to immediately go faster or work harder when required. The Bobcat auto-shift transmission automatically adapts the motor torque and speed to the desired level for the job. Operators have the benefit of not having to take their hands off the joystick to change gear. The transmission is also equipped with an inching function that allows the operator to be even more precise in low-

speed applications without having to use the brakes, reducing fatigue and increasing safety. The TL30.70 offers several features for ease of use, such as an all-in-one ergonomic joystick as standard that ensures travel direction and all boom functions are permanently in the hands of the operator. For enhanced safety and operator convenience, an automatic parking brake is a unique feature in the market. The model also features Boom Cushion Retract, which automatically slows down the boom speed when the boom is nearly fully retracted or at min/max angles, increasing safety. With the Automatic Fan inverter option, a cycle time can be set for cleaning radiators and the air intake grill, a simpler way to maintain efficient cooling. Another option is a high-comfort air suspension seat, including longitudinal and low-frequency suspensions. Many adjustments allow the operator to find the most comfortable drive position. For lesser regulated markets such as the Middle East, the telehandler is powered by the Perkins 1104D-44TA Stage IIIA/Tier 3 diesel engine, delivering 100hp by use of mechanical injection. All models in the Bobcat range are covered by a three year/3,000hour warranty as standard, with the option of extending to five years/5,000 hours. SPECIFICATIONS

Generator giant Himoinsa has developed seven new models of its Power Cube generator set, with FPT engines and an electric radiator with a frequency changer to optimise the generator’s fuel consumption. The new models supply 411-579kVA for the 50Hz and 60Hz markets. The electric radiator has been fitted with a frequency changer that adapts its speed depending on cooling needs. This optimises fuel consumption by the radiator and so leads to the generator set running more efficiently, says the Spanish manufacturer. The Power Cubes with FPT engines still have the characteristic compact dimensions of this range of generators, featuring 10-foot containers to facilitate transport and logistics. The remote cooling system installed on the top of the container also optimises space. Two of the new models, the HPCW 420 D5/6 and the HPCW 505 D5/6, can run at 50Hz and 60Hz interchangeably. These dual-frequency models are especially attractive for port applications or to meet the needs of rental companies which work in different markets. With the addition of the new models, Himoinsa is expanding the power range of its Power Cube series, which already included four 500-700kVA generator sets with MTU engines. The company also recently announced that eight units of another model in the Power Cube range – the HPCW500 D5/6 sets with C13TE7 engines and Cramaco alternators – will supply power for the Dakar 2018 motor rally.

JcB shrinks Backhoe loader to meet demand Why get it: smaller, faster 3CX CompaCt does not Compromise on performanCe while fitting tight joB-sites JCB officially launched its 3CX Compact backhoe loader at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 in Las Vegas last year. The 3CX Compact is a smaller version of the standard 3CX, yet retains the speed and power of the larger machine, The unit is capable of travel speeds up to 40kph, allowing it to be easily roaded between jobs or work areas. JCB also provides solution packs to customise the 3CX Compact to specific tasks. For example, the 3CX Pothole Master is configured with a skid-steer hitch in the front to engage attachments such as a sweeper, while a small patch planer has been designed to be mounted on the backhoe end. Diego Butzke, product manager, JCB, says: “Over mainly the last five years, there has been a shift in backhoe design towards some

of the sectors that are growing and needed solutions. One of the things that JCB has looked into is to make the backhoe a smaller machine – to reduce its work footprint into a compact unit so that the machine can serve in, for example, confined spaces.” “The 3CX Compact has a side-shift chassis on the back rather than a centre-mount chassis… it allows that back end to move from one side to the other,” says Butzke. “With the patch planer on the back, you can plane a square area easily with the machine stopped in one place. It doesn’t have to reposition.” Switchable 2WS/4WS allows operators to travel safely on highways and then easily change steer mode for manoeuvrability on-site. A three-speed hydrostatic transmission makes the 3CX Compact an independent backhoe with a large working radius for optimum productivity. This means users are not reliant on other equipment to transport the machine. This tool carrier is powered by a high-torque

74hp JCB by Kohler engine that requires no after-treatment, keeping servicing costs and downtime to a minimum. Compared to a standard JCB backhoe, the turning circle of a 3CX Compact is 16% tighter at just 5.8m with applied brakes, which enables U-turns on most single carriageway roads, says JCB. As the Compact moniker implies, the model is only 1.95m wide and 2.74m high, or 35% smaller than a standard backhoe. Despite its reduced size, the 3CX Compact still offers a maximum dig depth of 4.33m and a maximum loader capacity of 2.6t. SPECIFICATIONS

new sdlg Backhoe For me Why get it? more torque, improved Cooling, high Breakout forCes and roomier CaB SDLG’s new B877F sideshift backhoe loader targets the Middle Eastern and African markets, is half a tonne lighter than its predecessor the B877, and features a new engine, greater cab space and enhanced cooling capacity, as well as updated loader linkages and other improvements. “SDLG backhoe loaders always receive a great deal of interest in the Middle East and Africa, and for good reason – they are extremely versatile and efficient machines,” says SDLG product manager Henrik Sjöstrand. “Whether you’re operating the loader or the excavator, the new B877F has the power and manoeuvrability to handle almost any job. Those looking for a high-performing, reliable, easily operable and cost-effective backhoe loader need to look no further than SDLG.” The B877F, part of the SDLG F-series, is equipped with an improved loader linkage system to provide high breakout force of 48kN and comes with a 1m3 capacity loader bucket as standard. S DLG says that with improved kinematics, it is now easier to anchor the machine when using the excavator bucket. It also offers better control of the excavator arm when repositioning, better stability and more efficient excavating.

The new model also features a 55-degree steering angle which provides high manoeuvrability, particularly advantageous when working in confined areas. “Customers can purchase the B877F with either a multi-purpose or generalpurpose loader bucket, together with an extendable or standard arm,” said Sjöstrand. “There is also a wide range of attachments to choose from, such as various sizes of excavator buckets and flip-over forks. The B877F can be equipped with additional hydraulics if needed.” The B877F is fitted with a 70kW Yuchai engine manufactured by Guangxi Yuchai Machinery. The Yuchai features the same power as the machine’s previous engine, but offers much higher torque. Access to the engine is made easier through a larger, rear-hinged engine hood. Maintenance is also made easier with filters and water separator grouped in the engine compartment. Of particular interest to the Middle East market, the B877F has been fitted with a larger radiator capable of handling ambient temperatures of 50 degrees Celsius. This improved cooling capacity leads to better performance in hot climates. Access to the high-capacity radiator is also made easier via a large hood opening. SPECIFICATIONS

Crushers and sCreeners JANUARY 2018

Crushing baCk With infrastructure needed to be delivered for mega events in the region and the quarry segment shoWing signs of shaking off its slumber, the crushers and screeners sector is gearing up for better times ahead

I

t is no secret in the construction machinery industry that some equipment classes are more intrinsically linked than others with the economic vagaries of the construction industry as a whole. The crushers, screeners and washers class is one of these. While market conditions in the last few years have not been conducive to the sales of crushing and screening equipment, market players say the segment is showing signs of bouncing back this year. At UAE-based Genavco, one of the oldest and biggest machinery dealers in the GCC region, the mood is upbeat on the back of some encouraging news. The company represents two of the biggest global names in the crushing, screening and washing sector – Kleemann and Terex. “Last year was not the best of years for our crushing equipment, but 2018 is already a promising one because of the infrastructure projects coming on stream with the build-up to the Dubai Expo

2020 quickening for one, and other big ticket projects in the region also gathering pace as they near their delivery dates,” says Mohammad Faisal Khan, assistant sales manager. “In fact, we’ve just finalised a $2.7m deal for Kleemann crushers for a quarry in Fujairah. The buyer is Top Link, a major contracting company, and we helped in the financing of the deal with our own in-house Genavco finance.” Asif Sayeed Khan, GM, Plant and Equipment, explains further: “They’ve bought three sets of Kleemann mobile crushing and screening units. It is quite a large deal and after a 2017 with not much to write home about, the end of the year gave us this gift as a parting shot. I think this

sets us up for 2018 and we expect things will be much better this year. In fact, this deal will be executed this year and so it will go down in our books as a 2018 deal.” Genavco has a good relationship with Top Link, he adds, which last year bought around $3.8m worth of road construction equipment from the dealer. “So this is a repeat order from the same customer for a different product, which indicates that he is satisfied with our after-sales service and back-up. We are dedicated to all our brands and the level of service we extend to, say, a Leibherr excavator, an Isuzu truck or Wirtgen road laying equipment is the same we will extend to the Kleemann range that we sell.”

39 “The UAE is planning to bring in fresh norms for recycling of aggregate… We expect that once these norms are out, it will further increase the market for crushers and screeners in the country and brands such as Kleemann will stand to benefit”

But Top Link is not the only big-ticket customer to have bought crushing and screening equipment from Genavco. Faisal Khan says: “There is another company, Turkish Gulf, who have bought a complete set of Terex crushing plants from us. They are one of our key customers and the plant they bought is a state-of-the-art one. It’s a stationary plant which we installed a few years ago and it still looks brand new, as if it was installed just months ago.” He hastens to add that Genavco also has an annual maintenance contract with Turkish Gulf: “Of course, we have been doing the maintenance work on it.” Along with crushing and screening, material washing is the third side of this

German brand Kleemann, part of the Wirtgen Group and a leader in mobile crushing and screening, has recorded several successes in the UAE market.

sector, and Genavco and its stable of brands has found success in this area as well, says Asif Khan. “For a good quality end product, the mantra is ‘crush, screen and wash’. There are also certain projects where consultants demand washed aggregate. One such project is the UAE’s Barakah nuclear energy plant, where the requirement was that all aggregate that was used had to be washed. And it was all done with Terex washing systems supplied by Genavco.” Speaking about more recent successes in the field, Faisal Khan says: “We recently sold a Terex sand washing plant to Al Rawasi Rocks & Aggregates. The plant will be commissioned this month. We’ve already

supplied some washing plants in the UAE, notably to contractors such as Bin Lahej.” Of the two major brands in Genavco’s stable, Kleemann’s products are geared more towards mobile crushing and screening and the brand sees greater use in projects that require reclaiming and recycling of concrete and asphalt. “Kleemann’s range includes the Mobicat mobile jaw crushers, the Mobirex mobile impactors, the Mobicone mobile cones and the Mobiscreen mobile screen – making for a complete line of mobile crushing and screening equipment which we as Genavco offer to this market,” says Khan. “On the other hand, the Terex brand is more known for its stationary washing

40

Crushers and sCreeners JANUARY 2018

plants. Of course, the Terex range that we represent comprises its Canica, Cedarapids and Simplicity lines. “Cedrapids is Terex’s jaws and cones, the primary crushers; Canica is its offering in the horizontal shaft impactor and vertical shaft impactor segment; and Simplicity is the company’s horizontal and vertical screens. This makes for a very complete recycling and reclaiming solution.” Apart from having the right product mix for the market, Genavco is also upbeat because of some impending modifications to the regulations for recycling in the UAE. Asif Khan elaborates: “The UAE is planning to bring in fresh norms for recycling of aggregate, whereby it will stipulate the percentage that can be reused. We expect that once these norms are out, it will further increase the market for crushers and screeners in the country and brands such as Kleemann will stand to benefit.” Bucket crushers Another segment of the crushing sector is the mobile bucket crusher and screener. Hydraulically driven attachments that can be used with excavators, these bucket crushers and screeners offer practicality, versatility and economy where the requirements are not large enough to justify setting up either stationary or mobile plants for crushing and screening. Among the well-known manufacturers in the bucket crusher and screener sector are Hartl and MB Crusher. Both have a range of bucket crushers and screeners that can be fitted to large equipment such as big excavators or smaller machines like skid steers and backhoes. German crushing and screening specialist Hartl, which also makes large crushing and screening plants, recently introduced its HSS800 mobile screen attachment for skid steer loaders, wheel loaders and tractors. Hartl claims the screener is easy and quick to attach, and transforms its carrier machine into a mobile screening plant. The most common use of the attachment is for screening of building debris and classification of aggregates. Hartl says it developed the screener to avoid complex components while optimising its sieving capacity and minimising wear. Development engineer Georg Haberfellner says: “The unique and robust shape of the sieve frame reduces the force for picking up the material, which saves the carrier device used. But the highlight is the capacity of 600l. This is only possible by a smart hopper and inlet area in this compact design. Constant feeding and even more

throughput result from this.” And simplicity along with compactness is the hallmark of mobile crushing buckets and screener attachments. The new HSS800 has a total weight of only 600kg and a screen area of 1.7sqm. The screen baskets are made of HARDOX steel and the mesh widths can be selected according to customer demand and application requirements. Among the advantages its provides is the ability to separate material immediately on-site and reuse it, while effecting significant cost savings by minimising transport, logistics and set-up costs. These advantages are shared by MB Crusher products. The Italian crusher bucket

Both Kleemann and Terex are expecting a rise in demand for their mobile and stationary crushing, screening and washing plants.

and screener powerhouse is not just wellknown globally for its bucket crushers but has also made its mark on the Middle East. Its crusher buckets can be seen operating throughout the region, most notably in Saudi quarries churning out aggregate for the Riyadh metro railway project and in the mountains of Lebanon, where it is helping a concrete plant circumvent restrictions on sand mining by providing the crushed powdery stuff from rocks to keep its batching plant running. The solution MB Crusher provided in Lebanon to Koukach & Co is ingenious. The company, which also owns Lebanon’s largest quarry, had a stockpile of sandstone

MB Crusher’s Lebanese dealer, Amtrac Abdelmassih Trading, came in with an MB Crusher bucket BF90.3 and mooted the idea that the stockpiled sandstone could be crushed to make up for the paucity of sand. Amtrac product manager Anthony Abdelmassih tells CMME: “They had the base course for the gravel for their concrete mixture, but they were not getting the sand for it. We suggested they could optimise the use of their big sandstone stock, which included boulders. Previously, when there was no shortage of sand, they were simply dumping the sandstone aside. We approached them with the idea that they could use our bucket crusher to crush the stocked sandstone and make up for the shortage of sand.” This is just one of the many uses that MB Crusher’s flagship model, the BF90.3, has found in the Middle East, along with other products from the company. MB says it is the world’s first crusher bucket and has periodically updated it. The latest iteration is the BF90.3 S4, a more powerful, updated version with a redesign of internal elements resulting in a rise in performance, strength, productivity and reliability.

t is common knowledge in the construction industry that the excavator is the king of the job site. As the most important and arguably the most visible piece of construction machinery, the excavator is also the bellwether of the entire machinery sector. When the excavator sector is doing well, then it usually follows that the rest of the equipment market is following suit. This, however, has not been the case in the Middle East market of late. Excavator sales have been in the doldrums for a long time and have been symptomatic of an overall equipment sector that refuses to shed its sluggishness. But if the latest whispers doing the rounds at the major manufacturers are to be believed, the winds of change have started blowing. And the catalyst for this change is the altered project landscape of the construction and infrastructure sector. Not many people know better about this than Franco Invernizzi, senior business director for CNH Industrial Construction Equipment Middle East, the owners of the Case brand. Speaking exclusively to CMME, he says: “Just as in other regions of the world, the excavator is one of the most important equipment classes in the Middle East. This year, the market to date until October was a total of 2,100 machines for the region according to independent figures available with us, which is down compared to last year, but it’s still by far the biggest in the heavy line. What is amazing though is that the figures are starting to look up of late, after a long period of stagnation in the market.” While agreeing that Case’s market share in the excavator sector is not where it should be, he points out: “We are recovering along with the market and are among the few manufacturers that have brought their entire range of excavators, from 12-80t, to the Middle East market.” All of Case’s excavators available in the Middle East are “made in Japan”, which, Invernizzi emphasizes, gives the brand an edge in terms of quality. “We manufacture all the excavators for this market in Japan. We do not produce them in India or China, but only in Japan. This is because we want to build our value proposition around quality and

43 reliability. Case excavators in the Middle East are made by Sumitomo in Japan, which means superior attention to detail and quality. This is a different strategy from what Case does in Europe, where we have our own plant in Italy to produce excavators for the EU market. But for the Middle East, we decided that we wanted to offer the best excavator available - and it is from Japan.” And the strategy seems to be bearing fruit. An army of Case excavators is working at the Expo 2020 site in Dubai and in projects in the adjoining Dubai World Central area. Most are being used by Al Naboodah Construction to build the Expo 2020 site, Invernizzi says. In terms of tonnage, the most popular model class in the region for Case, as for the majority of brands, is the 20t class, he says. However, he hastens to add that the biggest growth segment in the region at the moment is the 35-40t class. “We have 30t and 40t machines and that category is growing very fast. With a 35t machine you can be very flexible and can do basically everything. The 20t class is by far the biggest but those between 3540t are catching up quickly. For Case, our most popular models are the CX 210B and CX 370B. These are 21t and 37t models and comprise the bulk of our sales,” Invernizzi says.

“We want to build our value proposition around quality and reliability. Case excavators in the Middle East are made by Sumitomo in Japan, which means superior attention to detail and quality… for the Middle East, we decided that we wanted to offer the best excavator available - and it is from Japan”

Japanese quality If Case is banking on its Japanese quality to make its mark, then Japanese giant Hitachi wears its “Made in Japan” quality on its sleeve. “The quality of our machines is very important to us, which means that we are not making any concessions, like stripping features for a lower market price. We stick to our quality and prices, and the ‘Made in Japan’ label is very important for us. Our goal is to ensure a strong positive feedback from customers,” says Piet Hein van Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East. The Japanese giant was without a dealer in the pivotal UAE market for a while after parting ways with its previous partner, but in November 2016, it appointed Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET) as its official representative in the UAE. The dealer, part of the Luyckx Group of Belgium, was already handling Hitachi Sumitomo cranes in the territory. It’s relationship with Hitachi went back a long way through its parent company, which has been Hitachi’s partner for Europe and other territories, based out of Belgium - and it was a nobrainer to extend the full Hitachi range to MECET, says van Bakergem. Speaking to CMME earlier, Wim Aernouts, director, MECET, had said: “The crux of the matter for us are the three S words: spares, service and support. We’ve invested heavily into spare parts and stocked up on them so that we could hit the ground running and help our customers do their daily business smoothly with little to no downtime. We also have a team that travels to the customer’s location to give support and service to our machines wherever they are located.” In terms of machines, van Bakergem says Hitachi’s ZX350, which falls in the 30-35t capacity range, seems to have caught the market’s fancy. “It’s a very robust and versatile machine, which is as much sought after for its features as for its Hitachi qualities of reliability, made-in-Japan build and solidity, as well as our back-up,” he says. Speaking of being sought after leads us to JCB, the British brand that is much sought after in the Middle East and surroundings for its backhoe loaders and telehandlers. Rajbir Sandhu, district manager, JCB Sales Middle East, says the excavator is equally important to the company as its smaller equipment. “The excavator is very important for JCB firstly because it allows us to be present in the heavy line segment and secondly, we have very good products to offer. JCB’s market share is growing in the GCC. The excavator is at least one fifth of the total construction equipment market in the region and the 20-25t class is the biggest, especially the 22t with a typical one cubic metre general purpose bucket,” he says.

44

JCB’s most popular model in the region is the JS205, a 21.5t track excavator. “It boasts the best components in the industry and is equipped with an easy-maintenance 140hp Cummins six-cylinder engine. The machine has the choice of two operational modes, economy and power. The first one saves fuel without sacrificing performance, while in Power mode fast cycles and high production are easily achieved. Auto idle is a standard feature, and it improves fuel consumption to 6% lower than average in the same weight category,” Sandhu explains. “Strength and durability are our standards. In JCB, we use Finite Element Analysis with extensive endurance testing to make key components last longer. The reinforced lower frame on the idler side withstands impact loads in the toughest applications. “Our JCB Heavy duty boom made of high tensile steel has 22% bigger boom profile and 12% deeper arm. The JS205’s ergonomic, large air-conditioned cabin gives the operator more space, more visibility and comfort during operation. This results in increased productivity. The JS205 also has easy serviceability. Access to all filters and grease points is from ground level to reduce daily maintenance time.”

The UK company also introduced the 31.5t JS305 track excavator to the GCC market last year. The machine is equipped with a Tier2 JCB Dieselmax 672 mechanical engine with rated power 221hp at 1800rpm and 960Nm torque. The engine has a choice of three operation modes - economy, power and hydraulic plus - to suit the required output levels and return better fuel consumption. “The JS305 has the same DNA as the successful JS205. We want users to continue experiencing the simplicity, robustness, reliability and productivity of the JS205 in the 30t and above range,” says Sandhu. Unique attachments One of the most important uses of the excavator in the GCC is in quarries as a rock breaker, and Japan’s Komatsu is a favourite in the segment. The global bigwig not only offers some of the world’s most popular excavators in the region, but also some unique attachments. One such is the Xcentric Ripper. “The Xcentric Ripper is a unique tool. It is a solution for rock breaking, which has been patented by Komatsu,” says Ashraf Hashish, senior GM, Marketing, at Komatsu Middle East. “It works on a different principle than the rock breakers. It’s a hydraulic machine

The R918 is among the popular offerings from Liebherr, which has emerged in the GCC market as a brand respected for the premium quality of its products.

which delivers power to a ripper tip, not a chisel, operating on centrifugal force. In some quarry applications, it can increase productivity by up to three times.” Of course, Komatu also supplies the excavators to go with its tool, and Hashish says: “We are actually enjoying a very high market share for excavators in the entire region. We have the highest share in the UAE market, but we are also doing well in Oman and Qatar. We are not satisfied with our share of the Saudi market but we still have a very strong reputation for excavators in Saudi and we are building on that. “Besides Dubai projects such as the Al Maktoum airport extension and Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Komatsu excavators are also working in projects such as the Duqm port in Oman, and in the Suez canal area development and infrastructure projects in Egypt. Speaking about the model range, he adds: “The 20t used to be our highest volume model, but of late we have seen the demand moving to the 40t segment, which has become our best-selling class with the PC400-8R. Komatsu has also seen healthy demand for its big machines, such as the 80t-plus ones, from the quarry and mining segment in the region.” The company also has some very niche

47 machines in the market, such as its Super Long Front of SLF machines, which have very long booms for specialist applications. “You can find this machine working on the Dubai Metro’s upcoming Route 2020 line,” informs Hashish. In 2017 Komatsu introduced the 50t PC500, which is a unique weight category. “I think only Komatsu has a 50t machine in the market, which was developed with the Middle East in mind. It is designed for quarry applications and has a bucket capacity that can reach up to 2.7cubic metres,” he adds. “Also for the Middle East market, Komatsu machines sport the Hot and Sandy Area Arrangement (HSAA), with which the company equips its machines to work in hot, dusty and harsh conditions and enables them to perform properly at 50-degree ambient temperatures. HSAA entails an enhanced cooling capacity and a different air intake system to handle the sand and dust of the region.” Over at Liebherr, the year gone by has been a hot one in terms of sales. The brand is represented in the UAE by Genavco, with which it’s relationship is around three years old. But there has already been success. “Liebherr is progressing well in the market. We are repositioning the Liebherr brand in a more proper fashion and are seeing

success,” says Muhammad Faisal Khan, assistant sales manager, Earth Moving and Crushing Equipment, at Genavco. “Liebherr is a premium product and with the regional market being a very price-conscious one, at least for the last few years, we have made less inroads into it than we otherwise would have done, given our product quality. “However, Liebherr’s claim has always been that its excavators are better machines than the leading brands in the market and in many ways it is giving a tough time to the market leaders in terms of features and productivity. Despite the constrained times and the pricesensitivity, we managed to sell 15 units last year, so that is confirmation that quality does talk in the market. In fact, we have testimonials from some of our customers on how happy they are with their Leibherr excavators. One of these is the Al Naboodah Construction Group.” Asif Khan, GM, Plant and Equipment at Genavco, adds: “We did a lot of product demonstrations in 2017 and as a result we can see a lot of promise in 2018. In fact, we are starting the year with a demonstration to one of the major names in the UAE mining segment. Our relationship with Liebherr is a new one but it has already been beyond both our expectations.

Komatsu is a ubiquitous brand in the Middle East excavator market, its popularity resting on a wide product range and tools such as the Xcentric Ripper.

“With our new product pricing for 2018, we feel we can pose a serious challenge to the 20t competition. The R920, Liebherr’s 20t machine, enjoys an advantage in production costs. It is the same Liebherr design, performance and quality control, but benefits from the economies of scale of being assembled in Asia, enabling us to offer Liebherr quality now at a keener price point. “Our Leibherr range extends to machines of up to 100t. One of the larger models is the R970, a 75t model which we’ve sold to some of the cement factories in the region.” In the GCC, wheeled excavators are still not as popular as in markets such as Europe, where their compactness and versatility makes them core products. But that’s changing. “We have seen some increase in demand for Liebherr’s wheeled excavators, especially in the 16-18t segment, with our A900 and A904 gaining popullarity in the market,” adds Khan. JCB, too, is banking on future demand for its well-known line of wheeled models, led by its latest, the Hydradig, and Sandhu says: “It’s when the overall evolution of the market tends more towards infrastructure work rather than moving earth that wheeled excavators become important. JCB is also promoting its wheeled excavator range, from 14-22t.”

“The Xcentric Ripper is a unique tool. It is a solution for rock breaking, which has been patented by Komatsu. In some quarry applications, it can increase productivity by up to three times”
