Small wonderS It’s common knowledge that when a storm blows through, it’s the largest trees that suffer the most. The smaller shrubbery often take on the fiercest of tempests and, because of their flexibility, come out unscathed. This is true as much in nature as in the world of construction machinery. Substitute the word ‘flexible’ in the paragraph above with ‘versatile’ and you pretty much get an idea about what the skid steer loaders are for the construction equipment industry – the flexible shrubbery that is weathering the current upheavals in the market much better than it bigger cousins, the large excavators, wheel loaders, power shovels and other behemoths of the industry. In this issue we focus on this smallyet-efficient class of machines that are seen running about at construction sites throughout the Middle East and GCC region, doing all sorts of odd jobs that its bigger unipurpose counterparts are not designed to do. In fact, as Gaby Rhayem, the regional head of runaway skid steer loader market leader Bobcat, tells us in this issue, the slow pattern in the market has actually been beneficial for Bobcat’s skid steers, as customers are flocking to the quality and versatility that the brand provides. Big construction itself may have hit relative doldrums at the moment, when compared to better times of yore, but what has been built still needs to be maintained – and this is another area that the skid steer excels in, whether in landscaping or clearing debris, or in a variety of other jobs. We bring you the facts and opinions of the other leading manufacturers of the skid steer,

such as Case, Caterpillar and Volvo CE to provide an overview of the category. Speaking of versatility, a piece of equipment can be put to good use even when its actual use ends, according to Patrick Ditcham, partner and head of machinery and asset valuation at Cavendish Maxwell. The firm is keen on extending its expertise in asset valuation in the Middle East market where it sees a definite rise in demand for its services, especially in the construction equipment sphere. Ditcham tells CMME in this issue about how companies can realise the residual value of their existing machinery assets and monetise them – and how valuation is the first step in doing so. Where taking steps towards a goal is concerned, Korean heavy equipment giant, Doosan, tells us in this issue about how it’s bucked the general market trend and managed to increase its market share in these difficult times. Regional head Woohyun Kim says concentrating on customer service is the key to Doosan’s current strong position. Now, that’s an advice no one can ignore!

The article “Planning ahead: pre-empting project delays in the Middle East” (June 15) is good and brings forward a few important points. However, what is critically missing is mention of project management. Organizational project management (OPM) is vital for project success and organizations with a high level of OPM maturity can deliver projects cheaper, faster, and better and this has been proven through numerous studies. Nothing can guarantee success but organizations can significantly enhance their performance. One way is the proper use of REAL project management. Further, the use of stagegate methodological approach is vital. Finally, a recent study shows that projects managed directly by project owners’ organizations show better performance. Mounir A. As part of Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) $7.3bn New Suez Canal Project, after the extension of the new Suez Canal that opened in record time last year, Petrojet – one of the Middle East’s largest integrated construction companies – is currently contributing to the building of six twin tube tunnels (four for cars and two for trains) beneath the canal. To support its materials handling needs, Petrojet turned to Cairo equipment provider Modern Builders Merchant, Genie’s authorised distributor in Egypt, which

recommended two high-reach, heavy-lifting Genie GTH-4018 telehandlers. The machines were delivered this January with optional air conditioning and bespoke customer paint livery. Offering a maximum lift height of 17.61m, a maximum forward reach of 13.36m and a maximum lift capacity of 4t, thanks to a 3.8m outside turning radius and the narrowest machine width in its category, the Genie GTH-4018 has a 100hp Stage IIIA turbo diesel Perkins engine for a maximum travel speed of 35km/h.

Volvo focuses on renewable energy in third episode of brand campaign

In the third episode of its new brand campaign, Building Tomorrow, Volvo CE is highlighting renewable energy by taking a look at constructing wind power installations. Illustrating how

construction is helping make the world a better place, the episode looks at a wind farm project in South Africa, where a new government programme is harnessing the country’s ideal weather conditions

while integrating socioeconomic development. Kouga Wind Farm, on the Eastern Cape coastline, is considered a blueprint for the programme. Roughly 70km southwest of Port Elizabeth – known as the

Windy City – construction at the facility started in 2013. The project began adding to the national grid in March 2015, when the first of the giant turbines came online. Currently home to 32 turbines, the wind farm generates approximately 300 million kilowatt-hours of clean electrical energy per year, reducing greenhouse gases by up to 270,000t. The community surrounding the wind farm owns 26% of it, and so far profits have been used to supply schools with computers, build sports facilities and develop clinics. During the construction phase of the venture, project managers also employed local labourers to help them develop their skills.

as pipelines export prosperity as much as they do energy – and the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) is no exception. The development of the world’s longest ongoing pipeline will improve the security of both Turkish and southeast European energy supply, and will enable Azerbaijan to diversify its gas export market. TANAP will connect with the expanded South Caucasus Pipeline and transport gas over a distance of 1,850km to Turkey’s western border with the EU. From there, gas will enter the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), crossing Greece and Albania before linking to the Italian natural gas network. The three pipelines form the main arteries of the Southern Gas Corridor. The project is being constructed in three lots; the contract for Lot 1 was awarded to FERNAS Construction late last year. Lot 1 will use 56-inch diameter pipe, the largest used in the industry. The pipeline will run for 375km, between the Turkish village of Turkgozu in the Posof district of Ardahan on the country’s border with Georgia and Askale in the province of Erzurum. An estimated 150,000 pipe tubes will be required for TANAP, equating to an incredible total weight of 1.2 million tonnes. The first part of the Lot 1 section of the $10bn project is a 79km stretch between Imranli and Sakaltutan. Among the difficulties of the project are extreme weather and difficult terrain. For example, winter in Turkey, which can drop to -25°C, combined with its topography, makes for a challenging environment. Parts of TANAP’s route reaches altitudes of 3,000m above sea level. In these areas, the construction season can be as short as only 110 days of the year. 60% of the entire route is hilly or even mountainous, with gradients up to 30 degrees. Such is the high profile of the project, FERNAS decided that it needed suitably high-quality pipelayers to support it. The company is using

five Volvo PL4809D pipelayers supplied by local dealer Ascendum in November 2016. “This will be the first time we have worked with Volvo pipelayers, and FERNAS is confident that the equipment will yield an excellent level of performance in all pipe-related activities,” says Erhan Acar, site manager for the first section of the TANAP project. Initially, the pipelayers will be used to support bending and welding operations before moving on to laying-in alongside conventional sidebooms. Laying-in, or travelling on steep slopes, presents a hazard. As gravity takes over, the pipe swings backwards, increasing weight to the rear of the machine. However, the Volvo PL4809D’s unique 360-degree upper structure swing capacity allows the boom to be positioned uphill, enabling the load to be kept ahead of the machine, aiding stability and control. The PL4809D units are specified with a 96t tipping capacity, or 102t with the additional

counterweight, as well as excellent stability and an on-board load management system (LMS). To prevent machines from sliding, FERNAS provided an additional safety element by equipping all five of the Volvo pipelayers with spikes welded to the tracks. “I believe that with their long booms, they will perform excellently with the final tie-ins,” Acar says. As for machine transportation: “It’s extremely advantageous when there is no need to remove the booms.” These combined features played a significant role in the completion of the Imranli-Sakaltutan section, cited as the most challenging segment of the pipeline. With some 6,050 pipes to be laid – each 13-13.5m long – transportation was the first trial. The site is only accessible via four roads, so forest paths had to be used for further transport operations. Adding to the demanding nature of the project, the elevation increases to 2,800m and the terrain is extremely tough.

s every equipment and fleet owner knows, your machinery is only as valuable as the project it is working on right now. Whether it is a spanking new fleet of best-in-class machines from the top global manufacturers or an old one comprising refurbished units that have seen years of use, uptime is the key. Machines that are working on the job site are bringing in returns while those gathering dust in a shed or yard are not only not being productive, but losing value too. This downtime or dust gathering is part of the life cycle of machinery, which seasoned fleet owners worldwide know all too well. When you invest in a machine and use it for five, 10 or sometimes more years, falling prey to the vagaries of global and local economics is inevitable. As in every other region around the world, the Middle East too is prone to market cycles. After the sustained upswing of the first decade of this millennium, the region is in the throes of a prolonged slowdown at the moment, post the crash of 2008-09. And even in this almost decade-long downswing, the equipment

sector has seen mini crests – as seen in a relatively heady 2015 – and troughs like the one Saudi Arabia is going through at the moment, which also threatens to engulf the rest of the region. Under this scenario, what is an equipment or fleet owner to do, especially if projects have dried up and he finds his fleet idle? Enter valuations. As a first step towards monetising the residual value of their idle or aging fleets, owners can turn to professional valuating services, such as those offered by Cavendish Maxwell’s machinery valuation arm, says Patrick Ditcham, the newly-appointed partner and head of Machinery and Business Assets at the firm’s regional head office in Dubai. Explaining the concept of machinery valuation to CMME, Ditcham says: “Machinery valuations are carried out in the same ways as that for property and for many different reasons. It can be for the purpose of bank security, for insurance or for a company’s accounts valuation. It can also be for rationalisation purposes or for sales.”

Full-spectrum coverage At Cavendish Maxwell, the full spectrum of valuations is covered, he points out, from market and insurance valuations to accounting valuations. “Fundamentally, these are the two main

ones. There is also a mixture of market valuation and depreciated cost, depending on what the purpose is behind getting a valuation done. What we do depends on what the instruction is. “For example, we would go in and inspect the machinery, whether it is a crane, excavator or digger – or even a printing machine or just a general office unit. And then we do the research: try and look for comparable evidence, which is the best market value that you can find. If there isn’t any then we would need to go back to basic principles and look for what a depreciated replacement cost will be.” So far as machinery is concerned, Ditcham adds, the task is slightly different as machinery is not country specific; it can move around. “So we don’t only have to look in the country we are conducting the evaluation in. For example, we work all over the GCC and all over the world, so if we are evaluating machinery in the UAE, we can get information from other areas so that we are able to provide the correct valuation.” Traditionally not a market to be known as one that is big on global practices such as machinery valuation, the Middle East has still taken to the practice in a larger way than some might expect, Ditcham feels, and new demands for transparency as well as adherence to global practices

19 “We advise a company on the best way of disposing its assets. We go in, we provide valuations, we advise the company about the assets it needs to hold on to and the assets it makes more sense to get rid of. We can then advise on which market is best to dispose off the assets”

and regulations are only increasing the demand for valuations. “Machinery valuation has existed in the Middle East market for quite some time,” he says. “Things are becoming far more transparent as dealings become more globalised and as banking requirements stipulate new needs. Therefore, we are now seeing an increase in the amount of work that we do. Obviously in Europe and North America machinery valuation is a very well established practice, but we find that in this region, as more regulations come in, the more valuation is required.” Another factor that is influencing the uptick in demand for machinery valuations is the current economic climate in the region and the need for contractors, builders and fleet owners to run leaner fiscal operations. “Previously, a lot of companies would just buy equipment and discard it when not required. The traditional line of thought was that given the harsher environment in this region, most equipment wouldn’t even last too long. But even when the equipment did last, trying to monetise the residual value of the fleet was not

Newly appointed as Cavendish Maxwell’s partner and head of machinery and business assets in Dubai, Patrick Ditcham expects a rise in demand for asset valuation.

really something that the region gave a lot of serious and systematic thought to,” Ditcham says. In the grander scheme of things, depending on the company and what money was behind it, sometimes it wasn’t even needed, he adds. “If it was a government-backed organisation, for example an oil & gas company, you often found that the need to sell a used crane to get back $55,000 in residual value, for example, paled into insignificance when compared to the budget at their disposal on the oil and gas field itself. Adding value “Now, however, times are a little different and things are obviously becoming a little more constrained, so profit and loss books are being looked up with far greater scrutiny. They are now looking at where can you make savings, where can you add value, bring in extra capital. And this is where we come in,” Ditcham explains. Speaking about one role of Cavendish Maxwell’s machinery valuation services, he adds: “We advise a company on the best way of disposing its assets. We go in, we

provide valuations, we advise the company about the assets it needs to hold on to and the assets it makes more sense to get rid of. We can then advise on which market is best to dispose off the assets, because it is a global market for sellers, not just a local or a regional one.” Ditcham feels that with the local market and the economic conditions being as they are, “we are only just scratching the surface of the amount of work that could be done”. Keeping this in mind, Cavendish Maxwell is geared up to embrace the opportunities of the future and tackle the challenges. “We’ve got a team in place and we are expanding. We’ve just opened an outfit in Oman; we do quite a lot of work out there. We have on-going operations in Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, where we have multiple jobs at the moment. So there is definitely a need to expand our machinery services. Again, as more regulations come in, and as more transparency is required by global organisations and banks, there’s going to be more reasons for people to have their kit valued. So we definitely see it as an emerging market with a lot of promise. And we are geared up to make the most of it.”

Doosan is one of the few global manufacturers to produce the entire line of heavy earth moving equipment, from excavators and wheel loaders to articulated haulers.

“We believe a first good touch will bring a second chance. Doosan’s emphasis is on more investment in aftersales, as a result of which we provide 100% parts distribution coverage in the entire region from our Parts Distribution Centre in Dubai”

very dark cloud has a silver lining, it is said. And for heavy equipment heavyweight Doosan, that silver lining in the dark clouds of the current slowdown in machinery sales in the Middle East is an increase in market share. Despite the constraints of the times, the Korean company’s Middle East arm has managed to improve on its market performance in the past 18 months, says Woohyun Kim, Doosan Infracore’s ’s head of sales, Middle East, for its heavy equipment range. In a chat with CMME in the first half of last year, Kim had pegged Doosan’s market share in the region at 14%, quite a healthy presence given the stiff competition and the global giants who are in the fray for a slice of what is evidently a smaller pie than it once was. Right now, though, that number looks even better. “Up to April, 2017, Doosan’s market share has been grown to over 15%,” Kim tells CMME. “This is mainly the outcome of strengthening our aftersales value to the market and customers. We are strong in almost all GCC countries now and widening our presence with a single strategic approach across the region.” That single strategic approach encompasses Doosan’s range of excavators, wheeled loaders and other equipment segments, and Kim adds: “Most of these segments are well positioned in the region and have provided us a mixed growth and market share performance.” In fact, the only machinery segment that has not been so rosy for the compnay is the articluated dump truck. “Due to a big decline in the market for articulated dump trucks, aloost all brands have done

22

HEAVY HITTERS JULY 2017

little or no sales of the product these days,” Kim explains. However, other equipment classes tell another story for the company. “We have been maintaining our position at the top end of the market in the region for quite some time now. There have been periodic ups and downs in the Middle East market during our long association with it, but we have always managed to retain our customers and gain new ones… despite the market underperforming, we were able to hold our own in the region. “We actually improved our market share in the Middle East and were in the top-two in several categories. We are currently keeping up the pace this year that we have built up over the past few years.” Tough times demand tough measures, however, and so Doosan re-thought its priorities for 2016 and this year. These past few years have been a struggle for everyone in the market due to the sudden drop in demand, Kim says. “Our main aim for 2016 was to hold on to the market share we have already achieved and focus more on customer care,” he says, revealing a strategy that has paid rich dividends for the Koreans, actually increasing their market share. Investment in after-sales As per its priorities, Doosan has dedicated considerable time and attention to ramping up its aftersales and support game and Kim believes it’s the behind-the-scenes work that retains customers. “It has been found that our strength of performance, quality and reliability are enough to go against any other brand, and we can position ourselves as premium after adding the special value of aftersales onto our sales strategy. This ties in with the global spectrum of our brand positioning across all regions, which has led to fast growth worldwide,” he says. “Aftersales is one of our key drivers for sustaining and growing our business in the region. We believe a first good touch will bring a second chance. Doosan’s emphasis is on more investment in aftersales, as a result of which we provide 100% parts distribution coverage in the entire region from Dubai through our Parts Distribution Centre (PDC).” Special customer care programmes are also undertaken by dedicated teams in the UAE and Korea, Kim adds. Doosan opened the PDC in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone in 2015 to service its key lines across the Middle East and Africa – Bobcat,

23 Doosan Portable Power and Doosan Heavy. The facility stocks inventory worth over $3m in Doosan and Bobcat parts in 1,540sqm of warehouse space, serving 25 dealers in the region. “Our strategy is to cover a big region within 24 hours with parts. Before we had this PDC, we were able to do less than 70% coverage within 24 hours. Now we have increased that by roughly 20%,” Kim notes, meaning that 90% of the MEA region can obtain parts within 24 hours. “Faster delivery means less cost. Dealers will pay only the cost of shipment from Dubai to their country. So Dubai to Oman or Dubai to Saudi is surely less than from a European country to the Middle East. “Staying close to customers is a key factor of success in aftersales, so Doosan and our dealers have put in our efforts on a ‘go to market’ strategy to increase access to customers and job-sites within 24 hours.”

“We have been customising our products for the Middle East’s harsh conditions by fitting heavy-duty components, as well as improving engine reliability by including upgraded filters as standard”

Desert package And faster delivery is what is required given the increasing uptake of Doosan products in the region. Kim attributes the brand’s stellar performance in the Middle East over the past few years to the customisation that Doosan products undergo before being sold here. “All our markets have been developed and upgraded with additional configurations and performance enhancements every year. The main strengths of our line are reliability, productivity and durability. “We have been customising our products for the Middle East’s harsh conditions by fitting heavy-duty components, as well as improving engine reliability by including upgraded filters as standard. With over 50 years of experience, Doosan brings the latest technologies to the customisation,” Kim says. For the Middle East, Doosan provides what it calls its ‘desert package’. This is a one-stop resolution of the issues that equipment can face in this particular geography. Machines are equipped with different oil and air filters, stronger frames and modified engines to withstand the rigours of operating in a region where conditions can get really extreme. With so much attention to detail lavished on the Middle East market Doosan is cautiously optimistic for the future. Speaking about the future, Kim says: “As the market’s going now, it looks like it will stay tough for a while. Under the circumstances, it is more important to satisfy Doosan’s existing customers and fulfil their requirements in order to drive our brand to an even higher position in the market.

The Volvo CE-owned company said that the new G9190 and G9220 VHP (automatic variable horsepower) motor graders provide an automatic mode for transmission, allowing operators to shift seamlessly between manual to automatic transmission. This gives them greater control over the grading process while optimising fuel efficiency. “The new VHP models give the operator greater control over the grading process, with the freedom to shift from manual to automatic transmission when they choose,” says Shahir El Essawy, SDLG’s business manager for Hub South. “They are also fitted with a piston pump hydraulic system that always delivers the optimum oil flow to the hydraulic functions, regardless of engine speed. In this way, VHP allows the operator to concentrate on grading with greater precision for superior results, while the machine focuses on being more fuel-efficient.” The standard versions of the G9190 and G9220 motor graders were launched

in 2015 and have been well-received in the market, SDLG added. Just last year, SDLG sold 28 G9220s to a Saudi Arabian customer to facilitate a largescale road maintenance initiative. Among the features of the G9190 is a blade width of 3.96m with a blade pull of 9,990kg, while the G9220 has a blade width of 4.26m with a blade pull of 10,530kg. SDLG’s circle drive system comes with three support shoes and nongreasing slide bushings for better grading and easier maintenance. SDLG graders also feature an asymmetric drawbar ball stud that can be rotated 180-degrees to keep the drawbar in horizontal level position to aid fine grading. The cab is designed to offer all-round visibility, with industry-standard controls and air conditioning as standard. SDLG adds that maintenance access is improved with large side and rear doors, while greasing points have been made easily accessible for efficient daily maintenance. “We are always looking for new ways to help our customers get the most out of their equipment,” says El Essawy. “By taking some of our most popular machines and improving fuel-efficiency and operator control, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to those customers.” SPECIFICATIONS

Case Construction Equipment has introduced two new models in its road machinery line-up - the new DV23CC and DV26CC combination vibratory rollers. The new vibratory rollers compact with the front drum and deliver a smooth finish with rear pneumatic tires. An inline drum with tapered edge and high curb clearance offers precision compaction capabilities in tight spaces. Adjustable scrapers, an automatic vibration control system and a pressurised water system ensure a smooth, clean finish in a variety of asphalt applications. With operating weights of 2,150kg and 2,229kg pounds, and drum width of 1.1m and 1.2m respectively, the DV23CC and DV26CC are ideal for walkways, residential driveways, bike paths, tennis courts, small parking lots and other small- to mid-size applications. The DV Series combines a compact size, and excellent manoeuvrability and visibility with the same control features found in many larger asphalt rollers. The DV23CC and DV26CC rollers feature a tapered inline drum in combination with rear pneumatic tyres and high curb clearance, delivering a smooth asphalt finish right up to high curbs and other tight areas. DV Series compactors improve compaction times with a tighter turn radius, and an inline tapered drum reduces asphalt tearing when compacting around curves. A 31.5hp engine delivers high centrifugal forces and frequencies at lower RPMs, making the machine more fuel efficient.

The two new models have payload capacities of 40.3t and 44.1t respectively and maximum gross vehicle weights of approximately 70.7t and 77.5t. The trucks use Komatsu’s 514hp Tier 4-Final engine, returning fuel savings estimated to be as high as 9% for the HD-325-8 and 6% for the HD405-8 when compared with the Dash-7 models. Exhaust-emissions controls include a hydraulically actuated exhaust-gasrecirculation system, variable-geometry turbocharger and a selective-catalyticreduction system. A Komatsu diesel particulate filter features more than 98% passive regeneration causing no interference with machine operation and requiring no action from the operator. Two engine modes of Power and Economy allow operators to optimise performance and an auto-idle shutdown save fuel by reducing idle time. Standard equipment includes the Komatsu traction-control system that automatically applies independent brake assemblies for optimum traction as ground conditions change. The system operates without differential lock-up and Komatsu claims that “steering performance is not compromised”.

The HD405-8 features larger 21.00 R33 standard tyres replacing the previously used 18.00 R33 ones. Other new features include a fast-fill fuel system and a redesigned cab with 7-inch LCD display, rearview monitor, heated/ ventilated air-suspension seat, auxiliary jack and two 12-volt ports, and a sound rating of 78 dB(A). The company’s Komtrax telematics system and monitor provide key machine metrics, including particulate-filter status and fuel consumption. Performance information can be collected and sorted by operator ID. For safer ingress and egress, new angled front access stairs with handrails are standard for both sides of the machines. MacPherson struts take care of the front suspension, providing a tight turning radius, while the entire suspension system is a hydropneumatic one. Komatsu’s Advanced Transmission with Optimum Modulation Control System (K-ATOMiCS) adjusts shifting performance to match demand, resulting in a more comfortable ride and reduced material spillage. The vehicles automatically maintain a selected downhill travel speed with the Automatic Retard Speed Control (ARSC), instead of using engine RPM for the purpose, as previous models did. system. Located at several points around the machine, this lighting system illuminates controls and the area around the boom. To prevent risks, particularly crushing risks, and protect operators, the HA26 range is equipped with the Haulotte ACTIV’Shield Bar 2.0. The system is now fully incorporated into the upper control protection cover for better ergonomics and enhanced robustness. Thanks to push forward principle bar, which provides a “safety gap”, workers are protected from any risk of crushing without compromising productivity. The HA26 boom range offers a working height of 26.4m and an up-and-over clearance of 9.3m to overcome obstacles with ease. A horizontal outreach of 17.5m enables easy operation in hard-to-reach areas. Due to machine weight limits, users cannot always load all of their equipment at once. The HA26 range addresses this issue by including a 250kg/350kg dual load capacity as an option. In

350kg mode, the platform can accommodate an extra 40% of equipment by weight. The HA26 range is also equipped for allterrain service, thanks to an oscillating axle for superior ground adhesion, hydraulic differential wheel lock to effectively distribute power to the wheels, high ground clearance to get over obstacles, a smaller turning radius and a well-dimensioned frame to manoeuvre in confined spaces, and gradeability up to 45%. When operators are working at height, the engine often runs for no reason, resulting in the hourmeter counting hours unnecessarily. That is why the HA26 range has a STOP Emission System that automatically stops and restarts the engine. SPECIFICATIONS

M

ost market watchers in the construction and equipment industry in the Middle East will tell you that the sector could be in better health than it is now. As we at CMME towers seldom fail not to note these days, the sector seems to be in the throes of a prolonged slump. But ask the appropriate people and they will say: slump, what slump? To add a twist to the age-old adage, there are some who are making hay while the clouds block the sunshine. One such entity is Bobcat, the compact equipment specialist. Mention the word Bobcat to the general lay person in the Middle East, especially the GCC, and the instant image that is conjured up is of a skid steer loader. In fact, so ubiquitous is the Bobcat skid steer in the region, that the brand has become the generic name for the sector. In the words of Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and Africa for Bobcat at Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment: “We often have people bringing in their skid steers of other brands to our workshops, saying ‘can you repair my Bobcat?’ That is our brand recall and it has come through years of providing great skid steer loaders and market-leading service.” Rhayem says that so far as Bobcat’s loaders are concerned, the downturn has been a boon of sorts. “When the market is tough, people flock to quality. Bobcat is a benchmark in the market and we are seeing our sales being driven by the fact that our quality products enjoy excellent resale value and therefore return on investment, which is something a buyer is more concerned about when conditions are tight.” In fact, Bobcat has now cornered around 52% of market share in the skid-steer segment, Rhayem says, quoting figures provided by the Association of European Manufacturers (AEM), up from 46% at

around the same time last year. The skid-steer loader is a multipurpose machine, which is always an asset, and it brings important versatility to job-sites, whether being used to move construction materials or waste, or engaged in the build by placing construction elements onto a building. New launches and innovations from many of the major manufacturers are boosting customer options, increasing productivity with new features as well as concentrating on safety. Bobcat has a track record of selling more than a million skid steers and last year celebrated the production of its 20,000th skid steer loader at its factory outside Prague. Given the wide range of functions that a skid steer loader can perform, there’s a natural fit with Bobcat’s compact loader range, described as the Swiss Army knife of a construction site. Its skid steer loader offering was bolstered with the recent release of new models and the new versions of Bobcat’s immensely popular S130 – the S410. Rhayem says the new models have been well received by the market, with high sales volumes. “Our dealers are more than ever very committed to the skid steer loader business, and the machines sold and delivered to their customers have provided high performance and satisfaction for end users. It was a tough act to follow to replace the ever popular S130, but our new S410 has

pushed the bar even higher,” he adds. Customers are mainly working in construction, building and rental, says Rhayem, with skid steer loaders used for building houses, villas, flats and offices. The landscaping and industrial sectors are also heavy users. “Landscaping is considered as the main growth sector after construction in the GCC. Rental follows closely after landscaping. The industrial segment is also a growing sector where skid steer loaders are used.” Over at Caterpillar, the skid steer loader is one of the most important pieces of equipment, despite the American giant being known for its large machines. Speaking about its significance, Mamoun Mutair, product manager, Building Construction & Paving, at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, Cat’s dealer for the GCC region, says: “Skid steer loaders are considered to be among the top five popular equipment categories in the GCC, where it is favoured and has attracted many different type of contractors. “Based on the type of projects and applications, there exists high demand for skid steer loaders, in the GCC region. The most general application for which skid steers are used is building construction. These projects and related jobs, drive the need for a small machine on the site that can do many different jobs and fit a wide

variety of applications. “The skid steer loader segment is considered as one of the most imperative products for both Al-Bahar and Caterpillar. This product family is crucial for customers with businesses of all sizes - large, medium, and small.” Versatile favourites At Case Construction Equipment, it’s the SR130 and SR150 that are the market favourites, says Zane Barnard, construction product specialist at CNH Industrial, the parent company of the Case brand. “These two machines are our generalists,” explains Barnard. “The other machines in our nine-model line-up are bigger and meant for specialised jobs. These two, however, are popular for their versatility. Skid steers are tool carriers and can do a lot of jobs with a variety of attachments. So when a customer wants a cold planer or some other special application, he will opt for a bigger skid steer from us, which will have higher hydraulic flows, for example. We provide a solution for a wide array of uses that he may have with 3,000 different attachments.” Case’s skid steer attachments are also universal, and can be coupled to loaders of other brands, Barnard adds. But the brand’s own loaders are among the most popular in the market and are easily among the top

With maximum lift heights of 13.85m and 17m respectively, the MC machines were designed to meet the requirements of rental fleets, with low operating costs, simple maintenance, reliability, durability and ease of operation. Both models use a 3.6-litre engine with output of 74kW, coupled with a 3F/3R power-shift transmission. They feature permanent four-wheel drive and use a limited-slip differential in the front axle to ensure traction over rough terrain. Dual-axle braking via large oil-immersed disc brakes provides the stopping power, and the front brakes also serve as the parking brake, ensuring reliability compared with an external parking brake exposed to the

three machine categories for Case in the Middle East market. Meanwhile, for Caterpillar, the models that are most popular are the 216B3 and 226B3. In the words of Mutair: “Our champion models are the Cat 216B3 and Cat 226B3. At Al-Bahar, we offer a wide range of skid steer loaders with different operating weights, starting from 216B3 with 2.58t up to the 289D with 4.77t. The need for these machines differs based on the application and customer requirements. Most of these models have engine and tier differences, when compared to the same models offered by Caterpillar in other global regions, like Europe or the US. For example, in-order to meet the emission regulations of some regions, the product offers differing features. Such changes are labelled as product adaptation.” However, regardless of the region, the same Caterpillar DNA is present in every machine Al-Bahar offers and Cat’s advanced features are another draw for customers. According to Mutair: “The unique and very competitive features of Cat skid steer loaders, such as the hydraulic joystick and single foot throttle, alongside customer benefits like comfort, ease of operation and versatility, give this product range all the competitive

elements. The hydraulic system in the GC models uses a robust gear pump, and the system’s flow-sharing main valve provides smooth control of three simultaneous operations. The hydraulic functions are fully proportional and controlled with a single joystick. Not to be outdone, Caterpillar has also brought in new machines to the GCC region, led by the 239D track loader model. “We have introduced a new model, namely the track loader 239D. This model is considered under the skid steer product family and has already achieved good market figures owing to the trust our customers have in all our Cat products and machines. The confidence that Cat product users exude on the quality and reliability of Cat products contributes highly towards the success of any new Cat product,” says Al-Bahar’s Mutair. “Cat skid steer loaders are among the market leaders in this industry. Talking about 2016, we have had a noticeable market penetration by gaining customer trust and managing to build a ‘repeat buyers’ culture. We are expecting to maintain and excel our aggressive success for 2017 and the future with our continuous efforts to build business relationships with our customers,” he adds. Cat’s 216B3 and 226B3 models are also sitting at the top of the best-sellers’ list in the region - and for more than one reason, according to Al-Bahar. Starting from unique features of the machine, which differentiates it from other brands in its range, this versatile machine is widely used in different job site applications and contracting projects, including construction, utility, cleaning, landscaping and many others. The growing demand of such jobs has increased the need of this product family among most of the contractors in this region, says Mutair. Safety in operation Safety is a major concern for skid-steer loader operation, as is always the case when using machinery to work at height or lift loads. But the issue of safety shouldn’t be seen in isolation, or taken out of the productivity equation, since workers using an unproductive machine may push it to the edge of its safe working parameters in order to get the job done faster, increasing the risk of accident. One scenario is when a machine is not correctly aligned with an opening, which may only become evident once the boom

is extended. Volvo CE has a solution for this in its skid-steer range, with many of its machines equipped with an integral sideshift mechanism that allows the boom to move laterally. On its MC skid-steer range, this allows for side movement of plus or minus 435mm. This allows precise positioning of loads, useful when stacking objects or lowering construction elements such as frames into place, as well as for loading material into a narrow space, such as an opening on a higher floor during the construction of a building. The system functions with or without stabilisers. Other features on the MC range include frame levelling hydraulically operated from the cab, and front stabilisers independently controlled with automatic lock when the boom exceeds the preset safety angle. Transmission is hydrostatic, with an electronically controlled variable displacement pump. The machine has four drive/steer wheels, with automatic wheel synchronisation in the event of any misalignment, and selection of three steering modes from the cab. Another important feature in the success of any machine, not only the skid steers, is the level of service back up and support that

35 is provided by the manufacturer and local dealer combine. For a machine that works as hard and as regularly as the skid steer, proper and timely maintenance is vital for maximizing uptime. And this is where an established outfit like Al-Bahar scores, using its long presence in the market to good effect in providing realiable support to its customers. “The high and quick availability of parts along with comprehensive support offered to the customers differentiates Cat products from others. The strong after sales support, including product servicing and training given to our customers on how to optimally operate the machine, along with the unique features of Cat skid steer loaders, sets us apart from competition,” says Mutair. In combination with Caterpillar’s wellknown quality, Al-Bahar’s back-up is a combination that has put Cat skid steers at the forefront of the market, ensuring that customers continually sing its praises. “Al-Bahar has skid steer customers across the GCC, and the voice of customers, particularly the operators, has been very positive. The most common feedback has been – ‘Cat skid steer loaders are the most comfortable and easy to operate machines’,” signs off Mutair.

Volvo continues to be one of the most preferred brands in the Middle East’s skid steer sector, with its MC115C being one of the most popular models.

f you want to know where a country or market stands in terms of the maturity of its construction market, take a look at the equipment that sells in it. While markets that are still in the process of building things up from scratch have more need for the heavier stuff such as tracked excavators, those that have reached a certain stage of maturity see the market opening up for equipment such as wheeled excavators, suitable for operation in built-up environments. This is pretty much the case in the Middle East, as far as Caterpillar’s M315D2 and M317D2 wheeled excavators are concerned. The Cat M315 and M317 wheeled excavators have earned a solid reputation worldwide for reliable performance, long-term durability, versatility, fuel efficiency, low operating costs and easy maintenance. Keeping this reputation and the machines’ consequent popularity in mind, Cat took the product forward with its new D2 Series models (M315D2 and M317D2), building on the existing reputation with a more robust fuel-injection system, versatile front-linkage configurations, expanded work-tool capability and new operator comfort features. The move aims to provide a better and improved machine for wheeled excavator users while still retaining the familiar feel, features and quality of the tried and tested M315 and M317. Speaking to CMME about the region’s wheeled excavator market, Carole Berger, Cat Wheeled and Small Excavator Product specialist, says: “Tracked excavators may be the most used excavators in the Middle East/GCC region due to the nature of the application and ground conditions there, but wheeled excavators are making good inroads as well. Tracked excavators are used in heavy applications with severe underfoot conditions.” “However, the region is now a more mature market where a lot of buildings and roads

37 Caterpillar’s newlyupdated wheeled excavators offer the region a versatile package of mobility and digging force, reducing travel time and moving material on-site.

have been built. Some projects have moved to a more maintenance and renovation phase. That’s the reason why wheeled excavators are gaining in popularity. Wheeled excavators are the perfect equipment to work in urban environments without damaging the asphalt. Velocity and mobility are the key benefits of these wheeled excavators, as the machines can travel independently between job-sites at high speeds of up to 37km/h, reducing travel time and transportation costs as well as moving material on-site.” More and more contractors are adding wheeled excavators to their fleet in the region, Berger says, and Cat is quite often their preferred choice. Caterpillar’s strategy to have a full range of wheeled excavators specifically designed for the Middle East/GCC is proving popular with customers, and the

M315D2 and M317D2 tie in nicely with that strategy, she adds. “Caterpillar is among the most popular brands in the GCC region when it comes to demand for wheeled excavators for jobs such as road and airport maintenance, sewer and water applications, and material transportation on job-sites. This is apart from its application in core construction activities such as in roads and buildings,” says Berger. Some of the features that make the M315D2 and M317D2 perfectly suited to the region’s market are their powerful and refined engines, their flexibility and versatility, Caterpillar’s traditional robust build quality, easy serviceability and operator comfort, Caterpillar claims. The C4.4 ACERT also contributes to reliability with a fuel system designed to manage worldwide fuel quality. A primary fuel filter/water separator features a water-in-fuel switch that indicates when draining is required, thus reducing the risk of fuel-system contamination. An additional secondary fuel filter has been added to further enhance filtration capability. Cat wheeled excavators are versatile by nature and capable of working on prepared surfaces or off-road, says the company, and the M315D2 and M317D2 can travel independently between job-sites at high speeds of up to 37km/h, reducing travel time and transportation costs. The new models also serve as utility machines for moving material on-site. Two stick options are available for each model, and a one-piece boom provides easy operation in all applications, whether loading trucks, working close to the machine against the blade, or in situations requiring maximum digging depth and reach. The variable adjustable (VA) boom is designed to improve right-side visibility and roading balance, as well as facilitate working in tight quarters or lifting

For dozing capability, the new models are available with a radial blade, and available outriggers enhance stability. Cat attachments are designed to function as an integral part of the excavator and are performance-matched to Cat machines. The new wheeled excavators are available with a wide range of attachments, including quick couplers, specialised buckets, hammers, multi-grapples, compactors and shears. “The M315D2 and M317D2 offer the best solution whenever there is a need for a powerful and mobile machine, able to work on all ground conditions, whether dirt or roads,” says Berger. “The dedicated swing pump maximises swing performance without reducing flow and power to the other hydraulic functions, resulting in smoother combined movements and lower fuel consumption. Our design allows our customers to be more productive and more cost-efficient with our 17t wheeled excavators.” Operator comfort The operator station is spacious and comfortable, offering several seat options, including heated cushions and automatic weight adjustment. Automatic air conditioning is standard, while the design

also incorporates low sound levels and an ergonomic control layout for ease of operation. Large glass areas provide optimum visibility, and lighting packages provide an extra margin of safety. Accessibility to the cabin is convenient, with well-positioned handrails that allow three points of contact at all times. Anti-skid plates on all walking surfaces and steps reduce slipping hazards. All daily maintenance can be performed from ground level, enhancing safety, and service points are centralised for convenience and to reduce downtime. “The M315D2 and M317D2 wheeled excavators have been designed to work in the challenging climate conditions of the Middle East. High temperatures, sand and wind have all been considered during the development of our products,” says Berger, pointing to the extra filters that the machines come with, especially the extra level of fuel filtration and the ability to provide optimal performance even with low-grade fuel. In terms of telematics, the M315D2 and M317D2 are equipped with the Cat Product Link system, deeply integrated into machine systems and providing timely, useful information that assists in effectively managing equipment and associated costs.

Moving on wheels instead of tracks allows wheeled excavators to gain access to built-up urban areas, making them ideally suited to maintenance tasks in congested cities.

Remote monitoring via the web-based VisionLink app allows access to data such as location, security alerts, fuel burn, idling time versus working time and diagnostic/ event codes. Knowing where equipment is, what work it is doing, how it is performing and its general state of health allows machine owners to improve the overall effectiveness of their operations and lower operating costs. And then there is the service back-up and support that Cat and its dealers ensure for all customers, which is based on the global leaders’ exacting standards no matter where the equipment is in the world. “Our dealers in the Middle East and GCC – Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar and Zahid Tractor – have been established in the region for a long time and have a strong presence. They offer excellent after-sales support with very well trained technical experts and high parts availability. These are key elements to maintaining customers’ high productivity and minimising downtime,” says Berger. Seconding her is Samer Ismail, product manager for Earthmoving and Excavation at Al-Bahar, who concludes: “The new D2 Series is performing very well and is able to prove itself as a continuation of the old series’ success in the toughest applications.”
