Power to the PeoPle If there was anything that last month’s Middle East Electricity show in Dubai brought home, it was that the way for a manufacturer to remain in the black in a recessive economic climate is not to offer a premium product but a blend of service and low operating cost. Giants of the generator sector - OEMs such as Himoinsa and Jubaili Bros or engine heavyweights like Perkins, Volvo Penta and Yanmar – were unanimous that only one thing sits atop customers’ wish lists today: running a lean operation. This means minimising downtime, spreading out service intervals and extracting more out of a generator or engine. And indeed, the market is responding to the demands of the times. Some of the more established names in the sector are already veterans of reducing operating expenditure for their customers. Himoinsa, for example, has made lower OPEX one of its calling cards. The Spanish company told us the strategy has paid rich dividends in the Middle East, with projects in Qatar and Dubai, and as far afield as Morocco. Engine specialist Perkins and its partner in the Middle East, OEM manufacturer Jubaili Bros, are both walking the same path as Himoinsa. The Caterpillar-owned Perkins milked its 4000 series engines at the show based on its reliability, long service intervals and extended warranty. Generator maker Jubaili Bros., which exclusively uses Perkins engines, also emphasised its high uptimes and low operating costs. Volvo Penta, on the other hand, is going in for another sort of iteration of low OPEX – extracting the most power from its new engine vis-à-vis its running costs. The Swedish company’s new 16-litre engine built for the generator market is claimed to
deliver more power per litre than any other comparable engine in the world. Speaking of power brings us to the powered access sector, where market players are employing their own strategies to keep the tills ringing. Being the versatile piece of kit that an aerial work platform or a scissor lift is, they will always find users despite the economic situation. When construction activity is on at full swing, they are needed to finish facades and ceilings. But even during a relative lull, as now, what has already been built always needs to be maintained. Haulotte, JLG, Genie and their ilk now only have to respond to the challenge of producing maintenanceoriented machines. Elsewhere in this issue, we take a look at how another versatile machine, the telehandler, is faring at a time when its design gives it an obvious benefit by enabling it to play multiple roles. Also in this issue is a look at what this month’s Conexpo-Con/Agg show in Las Vegas has in store. For a largely stagnant global market, the triennial event could not have come sooner. With a plethora of new launches lined up, we hope to be able to curate the best for you in our next issue. Watch this space.

The 30th edition of Samoter, the Italian construction equipment exhibition which ended in Verona on February 25, has been declared a success by organisers VeronaFiere. Co-located with Asphaltica and held concurrently
with Transpotec Logitec, the transport and logistics exhibition by Fiera Milan, the four-day show saw more than 84,000 visitors from 86 countries visit the Verona Exhibition Centre where the events were organised
for the first time together. There were over 780 exhibitors drawn from 25 countries, and the event was spread out over 10 pavilions and six outdoor areas occupying a total of over 84,000sqm. Among

the biggest news at Samoter 2017 was British equipment maker JCB announcing its foray into the powered access segment, one of the key focus areas of the event. Maurizio Danese, president of VeronaFiere, said: “Our goal as organisers [was] to create events that can be business tools and promote effective service to an entire industry.” The construction equipment sector has gone through “one of the deepest crises ever” in recent years, he added, and the return of many large manufacturers, along with the many deals done at the stands as well as the increase in foreign buyers, are signs of a successful Samoter 2017.

Italian heavy vehicles powerhouse Iveco is supplying 120 new 18m articulated hybrid buses to Milan’s public transport operator, ATM, to renew its fleet. Iveco’s owner, CNH Industrial Group, said the commercial vehicle specialist won a tender from the northern Italian city’s transport operator last January for the renewal of its fleet for a threeyear period from 2017 to 2019, and then signed a contract for the supply of 21 vehicles. The contract was then extended to include 99 more vehicles.
Iveco is supplying the Urbanway Hybrid, developed by the company to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption while ensuring increasingly sustainable mobility for the community it serves. The model consumes up to 30% less fuel than conventional buses, with reductions of 33% and 40% in CO2 and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions per kilometre respectively, compared with diesel buses. That’s 35t less CO2 every year, or the weight of two buses, said Iveco.

John Deere and Liebherr to collaborate on development of future engines John Deere Power Systems and Liebherr Machines Bulle SA have announced a partnership to jointly evaluate engine technologies, designs and development processes that may be useful for developing and producing future power needs of each company. The collaboration will target specific horsepower and displacement ranges. Mike Weinert, John Deere Power Systems’ vice president for engine engineering and manufacturing, said: “John Deere Power Systems and Liebherr are both worldclass engine designers and manufacturers who have a long history of successful interactions with each other. “Because of the capabilities
each brings, and the long standing, positive working relationship, it makes sense for our two companies to join technical efforts in areas of engine technology and architectures, component sourcing strategies, and best practices related to
engine development and manufacture.” Rudolf Ellensohn, Leibherr’s managing director for business unit diesel engines, added: “Markets and customer needs are always evolving, meaning the engines that our respective companies need must also
change. This collaboration between John Deere Power Systems and Liebherr enables the two companies to gain leverage in numerous areas such as pooling engineering resources, tooling costs, and supplier development.” The two companies said they expected the collaboration to accelerate the time from engine concept to first production on any particular engine project. The manufacturers already jointly produce engines for their own equipment and also for supply to other manufacturers. Details about potential engines and other output associated with the collaboration will be announced as developments occur, the companies said.

Iveco vehicles win sustainability award
Italian commercial vehicles powerhouse Iveco took home two top prizes in the Sustainable Truck of the Year 2017 awards, with its New Daily Electric van winning in the Van category, while the Eurocargo CNG was victorious in the Distribution category. Entries for the awards, held in 2017 for the first time and split into three categories – Tractor for road tractors, Distribution for distribution vehicles and Van for vans – consisted of new products produced by several manufacturers during 2016 that are currently in
production and available to order, and represent a step forward in terms of sustainability. The Italian magazine Vado e Torno organised the initiative, which ran with the recently concluded Transpotec and Samoter exhibitions at Verona. Receiving the award, Pierre Lahutte, Iveco brand president, said: “We are very proud to win these two awards at the inaugural Sustainable Truck of the Year event, with our New Daily Electric and Eurocargo CNG. “The commitment to sustainability is a consolidated reality for Iveco and is based on technological excellence. Today we are the only manufacturer to have a full range of vehicles powered by natural gas, all the way up from light to heavy range and also buses.”

Terex crawler busTs German freeze
T
he small German town of Luderitz recently saw some big construction activity when a Terex Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane erected a number of large 149m hubheight wind turbines to help supply clean, renewable energy for the city and the surrounding north-central region of Germany. Heavy lifting specialist Franz Bracht Kran-Vermietung GmbH of Erwitte, Germany mobilised its crew and the high-capacity crane to Lüderitz to quickly and efficiently install the new power generation equipment. Crew members transported the boom and jib components, plus the superlift structure and counterweight for the 165m boom configuration required for the turbine erection process. While the company has completed many such lifts throughout Germany in the past few years, for this installation the massive crawler crane was equipped for the first time with a new type of boom configuration and frame option that increased crane capacity and improved rigging efficiency. Eric Jahn, a crane operator for six years at Franz Bracht, said: “With the new options, we can achieve a performance increase of 30%, meaning we get more lift capacity.” Standing between Franz Bracht’s crews and turbine erection were kerbstones, which forced crews to slightly adjust the lift plan on the Lüderitz application. “The kerbstones surrounded the wind turbine, which kept us from getting as close as we would have originally liked for the lift,” explained
Jahn. “However, the Boom Booster kit enabled us to erect the tower sections without a problem.” The new Boom Booster kit increases the stiffness of the main boom by increasing boom width from the standard 3m to a width of 3.5m. Up to seven booster sections of 12m lengths can be installed on the crane’s main boom, allowing it to reach an impressive maximum hook height of 174m. The boom kit comes standard with the Terex Cranes fall protection system, and its design allows two additional boom sections to ‘slide’ into the Boom Booster kit during transportation, eliminating the need for at least one truckload. “This can result in up to €1,000 in transportation savings, depending on the crane configuration,” pointed out Guntram Jakobs, product marketing manager, Terex Cranes. Even with kerbstones requiring the use of a longer lift radius, the Superlift 3800 crane easily handled the task. Turbine erection advanced quickly, and seemingly nothing could stop Franz Bracht from completing construction at the wind farm, until a major snow storm slowed progress. Using the Terex Superlift 3800 crane with the new Boom Booster kit, however, Franz Bracht was still able to complete the work on time and within budget despite the delay. “My co-worker and I have been operating the crane for about two months, and we can definitely tell the difference with the Boom Booster kit,” said Jahn. “We’re really looking forward to working every day with this crane. The bottom line is that a tremendous crane has been made better and more powerful.”

hen you’ve travelled on the road of success for 50 years, travelling around 200 kilometres to commemorate that success is only apt. For Dubai-based Genavco, which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year, one of those commemorative steps was to open its new full-service facility in Abu Dhabi, cementing its foothold outside its home base. The regional construction equipment supply heavyweight started life in 1966 and has since grown with the UAE to become one of its commercial success stories. The General Navigation and Commerce Company, which its acronym expands to form, is part of the Juma Al Majid Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in the region. Included in Genavco’s stable of brands are some illustrious global names in the commercial vehicles and construction equipment sectors. The company is the UAE representative of Isuzu commercial vehicles as well as construction equipment and machinery from the Wirtgen Group, Liebherr and Terex, among other leading brands. According to Genavco, the opening of the new facility in Abu Dhabi highlights its commitment towards offering the best service and support to its large customer base, coupled with easy accessibility. At the grand opening last month of what the company calls its flagship facility at the Mussafah Industrial Area in the UAE capital, Khaled Issa, COO of Juma Al Majod Group,

“Genavco’s expansion strategy is based on offering a comprehensive yet diverse product portfolio, competent human capital, exceptional service delivery and state-of-the-art facilities”
said the event was part of the year-round celebration of “relentlessly serving our dedicated customer base over the last 50 years”. “In the coming years, Genavco expects robust demand for commercial vehicles, industrial and construction equipment. The projected infrastructure expansion plans ahead of Dubai’s EXPO 2020 and other strategic projects is expected to fuel growth in the market. Genavco’s expansion strategy is based on offering a comprehensive yet diverse product portfolio, competent human capital, exceptional service delivery and state-of-the-art facilities,” Issa said. The new Mussaffah facility has a total built up area of 30,376sqft and comprises a state-of-the-art Isuzu and heavy equipment showroom, service facilities, spare parts sales and a BP Quick Lube facility. The showroom will display an extensive range of Isuzu’s fleet of vehicles along with selected heavy equipment products from the best-known international brands such as Vogele, Hamm, JLG and others. The 11,250sqft service wing of the facility, with 13 service bays and dedicated VIP waiting areas, will offer a futuristic customer service experience, Issa added. “We try to support our customers’ needs and enable him to obtain a full range of services under one roof with us, instead of going to various places. When a customer has most of his needs met under one roof and his product portfolio is dealt with by one source, he has much more reliability in his operations,” Issa said. “For our customers, especially in the construction industry, it is extremely important that they have continuous productivity from the machines; they don’t want them to stop. So once they have confidence in a company that provides and services the entire product range then it is easier for them do their business, as they are assured of minimal downtime. We’ve had excellent relationships with a lot of construction companies and contractors ion the UAE and with this Abu Dhabi facility, we want to expand that as well.” Genavco has also announced that it is offering discounts and special promotions during March to celebrate the grand opening of this new facility, as well as to mark its 50th anniversary. The new facility is located in the Mussafah Industrial Area’s M9 block, between the 6th and 8th streets, adjacent to the Bin Hamloudah Chevrolet Body Shop. The facility will be open Saturday to Wednesday from 8am and 5pm and on Thursday until 1pm.

he world’s first 3-D printed excavator, a section dedicated to immersive technical experiences, the top innovations in the world of construction machinery and construction techniques, a comprehensive programme of education, and of course the latest equipment from every manufacturer in the world – these will be the highlights of 2017 edition of the triennial ConexpoCon/AGG exhibition in Las Vegas, USA, this month. For five days from March 7 to 11, the Las Vegas Convention Center will host the who’s who of the global construction machinery and agricultural equipment industry, all vying to outdo each other in presenting the latest and the best machines, implements and technological innovations to a global audience. While it is no secret in the sector that traditionally the Las Vegas show has a bias towards catering for the Americas, particularly North America, whereas Munich-based Bauma, the other comparable triennial show, has more of a global appeal, this fact has not stopped Conexpo from assuming a global significance that rivals the German show. Indeed, many of the big global manufacturers choose the Las Vegas show to unveil their latest and best new products to a global audience. And while North American and particularly US brands, such as Caterpillar, John Deere, Manitowoc and their ilk, will be out in full force with their latest and best for their “home show”, the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and Europeans will be mindful not to be outdone.

At stake, besides their global reputation, is the lucrative North American market that, while having fallen off its pace of several years ago, is still the most substantial one in the world and, moreover, is in the middle of a recovery. Conexpo-Con/AGG 2017 will feature a record 232,258-plus square metres of exhibits of the newest product innovations and technologies to increase productivity, reduce downtime, and enhance safety and sustainability. Education is a huge and vital part of the show this year, with experts from various sectors in the construction field sharing their knowledge. The event will offer a record 143 education sessions across 10 tracks, including a new Technology Track, to provide attendees with the latest industry know-how and best practices to improve their professional skills and company productivity. Speaking about the sessions at this year’s show, Conexpo-Con/ AGG 2017 chair Rich Goldsbury, who is also president of Bobcat Company and Doosan, said: “Education is a critical component of Conexpo-Con/AGG, and we encourage attendees to take advantage of the convenience of so many learning opportunities available; they’ll be able to work smarter because of the knowledge they gain here.” According to Goldsbury, over 2,500 exhibitors from more than 50 countries have confirmed their participation. This demand, however, comes despite a damp mood in the global construction equipment and machinery sector. Sales have been falling for the last few years worldwide on the back of global economic cues, such as the slowdown in emerging markets like China and the depressed oil and commodity prices. The year 2016 was a particularly bad one for the sector, with industry reports and surveys indicating a fall in sales volumes of

equipment and machinery of between 16.2% and 16.6% for the year. This year is expected to be no better, with a further fall projected in sales, according to several economic forecasting and market research consultants, who expect 2017 to be the bottom of the cycle, especially in the Middle East. With sales of construction machinery still showing little sign of scaling the peak on which they stood a few years ago, the spotlight for both manufacturers and customers has moved to technological advancements that afford economy and enable the extraction greater use of existing stock. One of the ways this is possible is through better application of technology and at Conexpo 2017, a new 7,000 sqm Tech Experience offers an interactive look at the trends and solutions emerging in the near future in three key areas: the jobsite, workforce and infrastructure. T
he Middle East, especially the GCC, is generally a power surplus area, thanks to the abundant oil and gas resources the region is sitting over, which fuels its power generation plants. However, the region is also an important one globally for generators and engines. Much of the GCC consists of remote, harsh, barren and generally inaccessible terrain where power grids do not reach. Yet, human activity in the form of oil extraction, telecom nodes and even settlements, does go on even in the most remote and hard-toget-to areas. And then there are the construction sites in the region, all of which need to be powered, not to mention the mandatory power back-up structures that they require once built. Enter generators. The Middle East Electricity (MEE) 2017 show in Dubai last month put into perspective the importance of power in the region and solutions for better and seamless delivery of this vital component of life. Spanish generator giant Himoinsa, which has already etched its name on the region’s power generation and portable power sector with a track record of successful projects going back several years, was one such veteran. The company showcased its generator sets and lighting towers at the event, shining the spotlight on its new Silent Plus range for the rental market and on its machines designed to offer long service intervals while returning optimal performance in extreme desert conditions. Some of the highlights of the company’s range include generators with increased maintenance intervals and new models with reduced noise emissions. Guillermo Elum, Himoinsa’s sales and marketing director, said that the HRFW-250 T5 is the first model of a new range of quieter generator sets for the rental sector. Powered by an FPT engine, it guarantees a noise level of 61dB ±2 at a distance of seven metres
23 thanks to an improved and more complex design of the air intakes and outputs. It is part of the Silent Plus range, which incorporate two exhaust silencers as standard and top quality insulating materials, such as highdensity, 100mm thick rock wool, as well as silent blocks specifically resized for the engine-alternator assembly and its dynamic characteristics. Himoinsa also showcased its generators with Yanmar engines, which include a special kit that allows for longer maintenance intervals of up to 1000 hours. The kit includes a larger tank, which supplies extra oil to the engine, which implies a significant reduction on filter costs and downtime. This feature is available in both the Industrial range- HYW from 8 to 45 kVA- and the Rental range –
HRYW from 16 to 40 kVA-. “The long maintenance interval is a great advantage for rental and telecom applications because it guarantees more autonomy and reduced operation costs, especially for the sets installed on remote sites,” said Elum. In addition, the generator sets from the Industrial Range can incorporate a fuel tank of 1000 litres, 10 times bigger than the standard offering, which reduce refueling trips to the site. With the gensets working eight hours a day, this guarantees running times of up to 70 days, Elum added. Himoinsa’s HSW-650 T6/5 Dual Frequency, is powered by a Scania engine and supplies 806kVA of stand-by power at 60Hz and 738kVA at 50Hz. According to Himoinsa, its dual frequency capability meets the versatility

The new service kits make ordering and reordering simpler, and offer the extra benefit of having all the parts boxed in an easy-to-transport package, said Perkins about the newly-

Himoinsa also exhibited the HTW-1030 T5, which supplies up to 1.110 kVA of power in less space. “Our engineers have reduced the model’s size by 8.5 cubic metres enabling it to have an added layer of soundproofing when compared to the already existing 20foot container,” Elum added.
launched kits issued at the recently-concluded Middle East Electricity exhibition in Dubai. The parts are also numbered, making it easy to track what has been changed and when. The Caterpillar-owned engine manufacturer said there are 12 service kits in total, which cover its 400 and 1100 Series standard EP engine builds, while end-users will have extra peace of mind with the knowledge that they will be working with genuine Perkins parts, which also come at extremely competitive prices as part of the packs. Each kit is packed with everything needed to carry out the service, including oil, fuel and air filters, belts, the correct rocker gasket cover for replacement when the valve lash is checked and, where required, the pre-filter for fuel and safety air filter. Manufacturers of power generation sets - Original Equipment Manufacturers - will be able to offer the kits to their customers, providing the end-user with value by ensuring they have genuine Perkins parts fitted from day one.
Perkins perks up Caterpillar-owned Perkins showed off its 4000 Series engine to customers in the region at the show. The off-highway engine heavyweight said that it has to date built more than 50,000 of the 4000 Series engines, which have been put to use in various applications by some of the world’s biggest businesses. According to Simon Gray, product marketing manager, the steady evolution of the engine has taken place over a number of years thanks to significant investment from Perkins. This has meant that the engine, often regarded as a standby source, is increasingly being utilised for prime applications by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end users. Perkins estimates that up to
30% of all 4000 Series engines are used in prime power installations, Gray added. One such OEM manufacturer is Jubaili Bros, a 40-year-old company that was started in Lebanon and has expanded beyond its home to offer complete power solutions throughout the Middle East from its branches in the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar, apart from Lebanon. Jubaili Bros serves a variety of business sectors which include construction, telecommunications, Oil & Gas, healthcare, infrastructure, residential, real estate, manufacturing, transport and logistics, utility and others. According to Jad Jubaili, business development manager, the familyowned enterprise specialises in providing consultancy-style assistance from pre- to after-sales support that can encompass a client’s entire power requirements. “For the construction industry, we offer ‘Turnkey Power Solutions’ that include a presales visit to assess the project requirements. A team of highly qualified engineers and technicians meets with the customer and visits the site, working with the client to define their actual requirements and reviewing the alternatives available for providing a costeffective solution,” Jubaili explains. A spectacle rivalling any show in the world, featuring fire, light and lasers projecting detailed imagery onto a huge dancing wall of water holding the Guinness World Record. Every night, thirty water fountains, lights and fire turn the façade of the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City Hotel into a screen five times larger than the biggest cinema screens. The “FIRE. WATER. LIGHT. AWE” show is the star attraction of this complex, recently expanded by the Al-Futtaim Group, and behind the scenes HIMOINSA is making it all possible by supplying energy for the 48 pumps that active the fountains, forming part of the show. A complexity of the project is the rapid and continually changing load, due to the very nature of the spectacle. Working hand-in-hand with FAMCO, its distributor, and with Al Futtaim Engineering, HIMOINSA offered a solution of three HTW-1745 T5 generator sets. These start up, synchronize and provide up to 5.2MVA of PRP, acting all the while as a single source of energy. The three gensets are fed by a central fuel tank and auto filling system which keeps the whole plant primed for showtime. The project required a dual start-up system able to guarantee that the units would start up at the most critical moments. For this special application, the control units of the three generator sets have also been configured to communicate and work in parallel with one another. The three generator sets start up at the same time, just as a power plant would, and the whole operation can be
in its generators and the partnership with the Caterpillar-owned engine manufacturer has been a long and fruitful one. According to Jubaili: “Jubaili Bros is Perkins’ second biggest partner in the world. We assemble our generators using Perkins’ products in Dubai, Lebanon and Nigeria. “Our products are designed for the region. The Perkins engines and alternators that we use are already built to withstand the Middle East’s heat and dust, so the next important part we do is the design. We test all our products extensively. Our customers, including the rental sector, have been using them continuously 24 hours a day since 1991 when we started in Dubai. We have gained a lot of experience and are constantly improving our design and products.” The Perkins range that Jubaili Bros uses includes diesel and gas engines, from six to 16 cylinders, with high power-to-weight ratios and compact designs, easy to transport, install and maintain. David E Nicoll, Perkins’ marketing and dealer operations director, said: “For more than 20 years, Perkins has made major investments in the design and manufacture of the 4000 Series. Constant power is critical to people’s lives and livelihoods. And whether
it’s for powering hospitals, telecoms, data centres or manufacturing plants, the 4000 Series provides dependable power 24/7, 365 days a year. “The 4000 Series platform was seen very much as a standby only engine in the market. But Perkins has made major investments in the design and manufacture of the 4000 Series. The current platform is so far removed from the original that it’s virtually unrecognisable. We launched the 4008 at the end of 2015 and, alongside the revamp of the 4006, 4012 and 4016, this completes the overall product line-up.” Perkins is so confident about the reliability of the 4000 Series that it has extended warranty schemes on the product of one year of unlimited hours and two years or 6,000 hours for prime power users, he added. A third warranty for standby power users is of three years or 1,500 hours, with a maximum of 500 hours per year. “The 4000 Series is all about quality and reliability. Not just for standby, but for prime. Where quality and reliability are paramount, you can depend on the Perkins 4000 Series to keep the power on… permanently.”

tereX upgraDes DeMag ac 500-8 Why get it? new ic-1 plus control system makes instantaneous capacity calculations and reduces counterweigHt requirement Terex Cranes has “treated” its Demag AC 500-8 all-terrain crane to an upgrade that has greatly enhanced the machine’s technical characteristics. The latest version of the 500t capacity crane complies with the US Tier 4 emission standards, which means that the unit now has access to the US market. In fact, Terex revealed that the first order from the USA has already been placed, and the new Demag AC 500-8 will be delivered midyear. As for the European markets, the crane also enjoys full access to the entire EU as it complies with Euromot 4 standards. Along with the crane’s emission upgrade, another technical highlight is the unit’s new and innovative IC-1 Plus control
system. The IC-1 Plus control system is designed to provide the crane’s maximum allowable lifting capacity, based on the slewing angle, for every crane configuration. The new control system no longer limits the maximum lifting capacity to a precalculated, 360-degree load chart which was based on the most unstable position of the crane. Instantaneous capacity calculations allow customers to take full advantage of the maximum lifting capacity available at any given slewing position for any crane configuration. This advantage is particularly useful when working with reduced outrigger settings and reduced counterweight. In fact, it enables the Demag AC 500-8 to perform jobs where higher capacity cranes are typically needed. This comes with an added benefit: for many applications, the IC-1 Plus control system not only uses the full potential of the crane’s lifting capacity, but also creates the opportunity to use less counterweight as compared to the 360-degree lifting capacities. This results in reduced transport costs. The AC 500-8 also impresses with its
established advantages. With a carrier length of only 17.1m, it is one of the most compact eight-axle machines in its class that can achieve a maximum system length of 145.8m with a luffing fly jib. The crane offers enormous power across the full lifting capacity range, through features such as the improved design of the main boom cross-section and the reinforced sideways superlift. The star shaped outrigger design provides the required strength needed for minimal carrier deflection during maximum capacity lifts. In addition, the crane boasts short setup times, comfortable working conditions, and a carefully thoughtout drive design for outstanding transfer of engine power, yielding excellent performance on both the highway and the jobsite. national crane launches Dual-rateD nBt40-1 series crane lifting and aerial lift capaBility in one package Manitowoc-owned National Crane has launched a new range of boom trucks that are available with an aerial lift configuration to go along with their standard lifting functions. When equipped with this aerial package, the NBT40-1 boom trucks series, which comprises three new models — the NBT36-1, NBT40-1 and the NBT451 — is aimed at the utility market and will enable companies to perform both crane lifting and aerial lift projects more efficiently with just one machine. Manitowoc will also offer a comprehensive aerial lift “Train the Trainer” training programme to ensure its dealer network and end customers are aware of safe operation procedures, inspection and maintenance of their equipment in order to maximise their investment. The new dual-rated NBT40-1 Series will be especially useful for the utility sector, where energy work on de-energised power lines and new transmission infrastructure construction often require
the use of both a crane and an aerial lift. All three models feature the option of a two-person, 544kg maximum capacity, quick-attach yoke platform with wireless radio remote control. The new machine offers a 49.1m boom length and the highest platform working heights of 51.5m on main boom and 62.8 m on the jib. The 43.3m boom offers wellrounded performance featuring strong lifting capacities and aerial lift platform floor height of 45.7m with the main boom and 62.5m with the jib extended. Several utility-focused options are available and a hydraulic tool circuit in the aerial platform enables operators to hook up various high-pressure tools without the need for any additional equipment placed in the platform. An available integrated wind speed sensor provides real-time feedback of wind speed conditions to both the operators cab and the aerial lift platform controls. Justin Pilgrim, global product director for boom trucks and carrydeck cranes at Manitowoc, said: “With these new models, customers will gain the benefits of having both a boom truck and aerial platform in just one package, potentially cutting their need for two or more machines down to one.” SPECIFICATIONS

Doosan aDDs leD option on four light tower MoDels Why get it? long lasting and energy efficient Doosan Portable Power is now offering light-emitting diode (LED) as a factoryinstalled option on its LSC, LS, L6 and L8 light tower models. The LED fixtures, which were launched at the 2017 World of Concrete, can also be added as an aftermarket retrofit kit. The fixtures are rated to perform at 50,000 hours, and Doosan says the LED lamps will not need to be replaced during the light tower’s lifecycle. The company also adds further that while the LED fixtures cost more initially than the standard metal halide lights, they are 50% more fuel efficient, making “it possible for LED fixtures to deliver a return on investment within a handful of years”. According to Doosan, these LED fixtures also offer instant-on and instantoff operation, compared to the 15 to 20 minutes needed for metal halide fixtures to reach full illumination and the time needed for cooldown prior to transport and storage. By using less than 1 kilowatt of energy, the LED fixtures also leave additional available auxiliary power for using electrical tools such as handheld drills and saws.

HANDLING HIGH AND HEAVY
AS THE TELEHANDLER CONTINUES TO PROVE ITS UTILITY IN A STAGNANT MARKET WITH ITS VERSATILITY, MANUFACTURERS ARE CONCENTRATING ON HIGHER LIFT CAPACITIES, BOOM HEIGHTS AND SAFETY
W
hen the going gets tough the telehandler gets going. For a class of machine often considered to be in the minor league of construction equipment, especially when compared to its larger cousins such as wheel loaders and excavators, the versatility of the telehandler ensures that it never goes out of action, no matter what the market conditions. It is by now well-acknowledged that the Middle East construction equipment market is in a spot of bother. The stubbornly low oil price, the consequently low public spending and deflating investor confidence in the construction sector have all come together in a perfect storm that has pushed the sector back into uncomfortable inactivity. A lot of the big excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks and cranes are lying idle with the constriction of construction and quarrying activity. But the telehandler soldiers on. Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, the owners of Bobcat, one of the biggest telehandler makers on the market, explains why: “Multi-purpose machines are always an asset, and telehandlers bring important versatility to job-sites, whether being used to move construction materials or waste, or engaged in the build by placing construction elements onto a building. New launches and innovations are boosting customer options, increasing productivity with new features while concentrating on safety.” Known for its compact loaders, Bobcat has a popular range of telehandlers and has already celebrated the production of its 20,000th telehandler at its Pontchâteau plant in France in 2014. Given the wide range of functions that a telehandler can perform, there’s a natural fit with Bobcat’s compact loader range, described as a Swiss Army knife of a construction site. Its telehandler offering was bolstered with the new versions of Bobcat’s two largest rigid frame telescopic handlers, the T40140 (14 metres) and T40180 (18m) and was further enhanced at Bauma 2016. Bobcat has also launched a standard three year warranty for the complete range of its rigid telehandlers. It is available as standard in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region on all the models in the Bobcat telehandler range, from the T2250 5m telehandler to the top-

BOBCAT’S NEW RIGID FRAME HANDLERS
Bobcat has launched a new range of rigid frame telehandlers for the construction and rental industries, offering a choice of 11 models that cover a wide spread of lifting capacities. The compact equipment specialist said in a statement that the new range, manufactured at the company’s plant at Pontchâteau in France, is backed by a three year warranty as standard, with lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.1t and lifting heights from 6 to 18m. Designated using a new naming system that shows lifting capacity followed by lifting height, the models are the TL26.60 and TL30.60 compact telescopic loaders, the TL35.70, T35.105, T35.105L and T36.120SL middle lift telehandlers, the T35.130S and T35.140S rental industry-oriented telehandlers, and the T35.130SLP, T41.140SLP and T40.180SLP high lift telehandlers. The new generation telehandlers are available in versions suitable for markets with non-regulated emissions, such as the Middle East and Africa, where high performance is ensured by Perkins Stage IIIA/Tier 3 diesel engines, providing plenty of power and torque even in the most difficult ground conditions, Bobcat said. The new generation telehandlers also incorporate several new features such as an automatic parking brake with an intuitive operation similar to those used in the automotive industry, providing greater safety and control. The advanced features also include an optional air dual suspension seat, an optional auto fan inversion, a rotating beacon/back-up alarm as standard and cushion retract on the three TL models, the statement added. The statement added that the TL26.60 and TL30.60 are available with two different overall machine heights with a cab which can be mounted in two different ways – in a low position that results in a very low 2.1m height or a higher position to optimise visibility. On the TL35.70, there is an improved load chart providing an additional 500kg of lifting capacity at the maximum lifting height of 6.97m.
of-the-range T40180 18m model. Rhayem says that the new models have been well received by the market, with high sales volumes. “Our dealers are more than ever very committed to the telehandler business, and the machines sold and delivered to their customers have provided high performance and satisfaction for the end users.” Customers are mainly working in construction, building and rental, says Rhayem, with telehandlers used for building houses, villas, flats and offices. The landscaping and industrial sectors are also heavy users. “Landscaping is considered as the main growth sector after construction in the GCC. Rental follows closely after landscaping. The industrial segment is another growing sector for telehandlers.” The rigid frame telescopic handlers push operational boundaries upward, including greater stability when the telehandler is operating only on wheels without stabilisers extended. This enables the larger T40180 telehandler to lift to an impressive maximum height of 16.2m when operated on tyres. It has a maximum lift capacity of 4t, which drops to 2.5t at its max lift height, while at its maximum reach of 13.7m the lift capacity is 560kg. Maximum lift height on its stabilisers is 17.52m. Caterpillar offers the compact TH255C – it has a load capacity of 2,500kg and a maximum lift height of 5.6m, powered by a hydrostatic drive - along with two larger machines, the TH414C GC and TH417C GC in the region. With maximum lift heights of 13.85m and 17m respectively, the GC machines were designed to meet the requirements of rental fleets, with low operating costs, simple maintenance, reliability, durability and ease of operation. Both telehandlers use a 3.6-litre engine with output of 74kW, coupled with a 3F/3R power-shift transmission. They feature permanent four-wheel drive and use a limited-slip differential in the front axle to ensure traction over rough terrain. Dualaxle braking via large oil-immersed disc brakes provides the stopping power, and the front brakes also serve as the parking brake, ensuring reliability compared with an external, exposed parking brake. Safety is a major concern for telehandler operation, as is always the case when using machinery to work at height or lift loads. But the issue of safety shouldn’t be seen in isolation, or taken out of the productivity equation, since workers using an unproductive machine may push it to the edge of its safe working parameters in order to get the job done faster, increasing the risk of accident. One scenario is when a machine is not correctly aligned with an
opening, which may only become evident once the boom is extended. Telehandler producer Merlo has a solution for this, with many of its machines equipped with an integral side-shift mechanism that allows the boom to move laterally. Merlo has always had a strong focus on safety, and in 2012 the company launched its Merlo dynamic load control (CDC) system, which guarantees front longitudinal stability of telehandlers under both static and dynamic conditions. Advancing the previous load sensing system, the CDC is able to sense which attachment the machine is using, important to know since attachments have different dimensions and weights, which affects the load chart. Using sensors that detect load weight and boom geometry control, the machine display is able to give the operator a precise measure of the machine’s stability, using a green-amber-red light warning system. If the minimum safe load is exceeded, movements are blocked, while the operator can take remedial action. In 2015, the company launched what it

A SKYJACK FOR HEAVY LOADS Linamar Corporation’s (TSX-LNR) Skyjack division unveiled a new SJ1256 TH telehandler during World of Concrete in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Tier-IV final compliant machine brings Skyjack’s class-leading load chart performance to the 12,000-lb lifting capacity market and will be available for purchase in the second quarter of 2017. “The SJ1256 TH is based heavily on our class-leading SJ1056 TH,” said Barry Greenaway, senior product manager, Skyjack. “Most telehandlers in the 12K category lift 12,000 lbs to just over 20 feet. The SJ1256 TH can lift 12,000 lbs to 35 ft. Another outstanding feature, is that it can lift 1,000 lbs at maximum forward reach of 42.6 ft without deploying outriggers, whereas most similar machines can only lift up to 500 lbs, or even no load at all, in the same circumstance.” Ideal for heavier-duty applications, the SJ1256 TH features 12,000-lbs (5,443 kg) maximum lift capacity, 56.3 ft (17.1 m) maximum lift height, 6,000 lbs (2,721 kg) lift capacity at maximum lift height without deploying outriggers and 7,000 lbs (3,175 kg) lift capacity at maximum lift height with outriggers deployed, 42.6 ft (12.95m) maximum forward reach and a Tier-IV final 107hp Deutz TCD3.6L engine that uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid but requires no regeneration. “By introducing the SJ1256 TH, we can now supply telehandlers to operators and rental branches that cater to heavier duty applications, such as the energy sector,” Greenaway said. “We want to be able to service those sectors as part of our pursuit of becoming a full-line manufacturer and supplier of mobile elevating work platforms and telehandlers.” The SJ1256 TH retains all the features of its predecessor, including SKYCODEDTM control system, FLEXCABTM easy cab conversion system, READYHOOKTM yoke-mounted
said was a world first, not just for telehandlers but for other lifting sectors too: a traversal stability system (TSS). The new system incorporates measurement of side stability and calculates the inclines a machine can operate on without compromising stability. Matteo Benedetto, director, marketing at Merlo, says: “Lateral stability is extremely important, particularly for equipment used in the field and operating on uneven terrain. Lateral overturning of machinery is one of the main causes of death, if not the main, in the sector.” American powered access specialist JLG also has a range of telehandlers. Its 3614RS and 4017RS models, which are aimed at the rental market - with the RS in the products’ names standing for rental series or spec - were developed as a result of working closely with rental companies. Their features include cabs that can be cleaned by a pressure-washer before the machines’ next job and simplified service with access to the external telescope cylinder and electronics placed outside rather than inside the boom.
A single compensation lift cylinder requires less service and has fewer leak points, and JLG’s telehandlers are also built with Dana axles and transmissions as well as Deutz engines. Also, the boom technology uses a four-plate box design, improving the machine’s reliability. Bobcat’s telehandlers are equipped with a standard patented side-shift function, allowing the load to be moved 700mm on either side. The side-shift movement occurs via a cylinder in the side-shift carriage, which goes between the frame at the top of the boom and the attachment such as pallet forks. An integrated frame-levelling system provides tilt correction on inclined surfaces of +/-40 on tyres and up to +/-120 on stabilisers making load positioning safe and optimum. “Bobcat made the choice to offer the same level of safety and security for all TLS customers across the world, and we really believe these features are now a requirement for the Middle East market,” says Rhayem.

Being integral to Both construction and maintenance, aerial work platforms remain a vital part of the region’s machinery landscape, with manufacturers extending their reach and improving productivity
T
he utility and versatility that the aerial work platform (AWP) affords has made it one of the few equipment classes that are finding a market in the Middle East despite the present constrained economic times. The AWP is important no matter whether a structure is being constructed or being maintained once it is already built. And this is why it is important in the GCC, where a lot of new construction may be on the back burner, but what has been built – and there has been plenty in recent times – needs to be maintained. One company at the forefront of the region’s AWP market is Haulotte. The French powered access specialist has some of the most prestigious projects in the region to its credit, whether in fresh construction or in maintenance. Haulotte work platforms are building the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi and the King Abdul-Aziz international Airport in Jeddah, among other big-ticket new projects. In the maintenance sphere, Haulotte machines can be seen in action at one of the most revered houses of worship in the world – the Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah, where they are engaged in the daily rigorous and meticulous upkeep of the holiest mosque in Islam. Arthur Danelian, managing director of Haulotte Middle East, says that the UAE, Oman and Qatar remain strong market for the company, while Turkey has emerged as an outstanding one in recent times. Going ahead, shopping malls, hotel construction and facilities management are also picked by Danelian as possible demand centres for AWPs. “We have almost a 30% share of the AWP market in the entire Middle East, according to annual figures from the American Association of AWP manufacturers and have retained our leadership position for almost a decade. Saudi Arabia was our biggest market in the region in 2015, but after the dramatic drop there last year, Turkey has now emerged as the largest,” Danelian says. “Our best-selling lines in the region are the articulated and telescopic booms, as well as the scissor lifts. Most of these are of course suitable for construction, which is still quite big in the GCC, especially in Dubai and Doha. As a European manufacturer, our machines have a high degree of safety built into them because of the regulations in our home market. We also ensure excellence in our service to our end users, which is a key factor of our success in the region. All our dealers are fully trained and certified by us at least twice a year so that they provide a very high level of service to the end user.”
41 France’s Haulotte is part of several prestigious projects in the region, such as Abu Dhabi’s Louvre Museum and the Masjid AlHaram in Makkah.
Haulotte also customises and adapts its machines for the Middle East market and its peculiar requirements, Danelian adds. “We do not deliver the same machines to the GCC as we do in, say France. We equip our models for the climate and work conditions in this region. For example, we are working with shipyards in Oman, where we have 4050 units of big booms working since 2008 in the desert sand and heat of more than 50 degrees Celsius. So these machines have been specially adapted for these particular projects and requirements,” he says. “We have separate oils for hot and cold regions. We also have extra protection from the sand and heat for our machines for this region. Our machines here have the same life spans as they do in Europe. Since 80% of our business is with rental companies in the region, we have to ensure that our units give them at least 10 years of hassle-free work.” Haulotte’s HT28 RTJ Pro, HT23 RTJ and HA16 RTJ, have proved popular in the Middle East he says. The HA16 offers a 16m articulated boom and is available in three variants. All feature four-wheel drive, and the machine is designed for rough terrain capability, with a high ground clearance of 38cm and 40% gradeability. The machines also have permanent anti-slip differentials to evenly distribute power to the wheels, with a manually activated hydraulic differential lock for traversing more difficult terrain. Following the success of the HA16 RTJ, Haulotte launched a 20m version, the HA20 RTJ, which has a working height of 20.6m, horizontal outreach of 12.1m and up-andover clearance of 8.1m. Lifting speed is just 48 seconds, which Haulotte says is among the best in the market for this class. Another popular AWP manufacturer in the Middle East is the American company JLG, which appointed its first dealer in the region back in the early 1980s, establishing its own sales and service operation in the UAE in 2008. “Since we set up shop here in 2008, the growth has been in the large boom segment, driven by demand from the construction, and oil and gas sectors,” says Enrico Marighella, JLG’s distribution manager for the Middle East. “We deliver the powerful, versatile equipment that they need, along with unsurpassed training and service, because we have a responsibility to be more than a manufacturing company. We are a partner in our customers’ success.” JLG’s popular RS series is easy to service and easier to operate, and has low acquisition costs, Marighella said. JcB ventures into powered access
JCB has launched nine electric scissor lift models and announced a new JCB Access division, marking its entry into the powered access equipment sector. The global heavyweight said that by the end of this year the newly-announced JCB Access business will have 27 scissors, articulated booms and telescopic booms. JCB believes the global powered access market, with annual revenues of $8bn, is in excess of 130,000 units and plans to take a slice of the market. JCB’s entry into the sector has been a closely guarded secrets in the industry, despite being in the planning for two years. Many AWP industry experts have been taking up roles at the new division, with some top personnel from powered access giants making the move to the British company, such as Phil Graysmark, Genie’s former vice president of sales and marketing for the EMEAR region, who joined towards the end of 2015. Richard Butler, managing director of JCB Access, said customers had been asking JCB for years for powered access products and the move into the segment was customer driven. “It was a logical extension; we had been busy growing our product range over the years in the construction and agriculture sectors but the noise escalated – customers said, ‘you should be in this sector because it has so many synergies with products you already supply’. It was a no-brainier in reality, and we set about it,” Butler was quoted as saying by Access International. All JCB powered access products will be produced in China under contract by a third party manufacturer. By the end of 2017 JCB’s range of access platforms will include nine electric and three diesel scissor lifts from 4.6m to 13.8m, five articulating booms – four diesel and one electric - from 14.9m to 24.6m, and 10 diesel telescopic booms from 20.6m to 41.6m. The scissor lifts weigh between 1.3t and 3.3t. The two smallest models have platforms 1.64m long by 0.76m wide, while all larger models use a 2.5m long platform. The largest S4550E model has a 2.64m long working area. The machines are rated for basket capacities from 227kg to a maximum of 550kg. The electric scissors are powered by four 6V or 12V batteries, with hydraulic drive. Three diesel models will be introduced later this year, as well as other models, such as articulated booms, that will expand its range further. JCB’s LiveLink telematics system will be standard on all booms and optional on the scissors.
industry, is an example of a machine that is literally extending the range of jobs that can be completed with a self-propelled boom. According to Marighella, the machine sometimes replaces truck-mounted access platforms, over which it enjoys advantages such as a lower price and a much smaller footprint, meaning that self-propelled booms can be used on job-sites with confined spaces. Safety is another area of great importance in the AWP sphere. Statistics from independent bodies say working at height poses the biggest safety hazard in the Middle East. With this in mind, manufacturers have been incorporating advanced safety features in their machines. Powered access specialist Genie’s new Lift Guard Contact Alarm System raises an alarm in an emergency. It is engineered as an electronic secondary guarding system to immediately activate and alert others that the operator may need help and is configured as a standard accessory on most
43 new Genie Z articulated and S telescopic boom lifts. Marie Engstrom, product manager at the Terex Group-owned company, said: “Operator safety is a paramount concern for Genie, and we have developed the new Genie Lift Guard Contact Alarm, part of the Genie line of Lift Guard secondary operator protection accessories, with this goal in mind.” When the system is activated, all machine lift and drive functions are stopped to prevent additional movement in the platform. An alarm sounds and beacons flash, notifying everyone near the Genie boom lift that the operator may require assistance. The system, available globally from April, is installed standard or as an aftermarket kit, which can easily be installed in less than 30 minutes. It fits on platforms in the Genie Zand S-boom families and can be retrofitted on units back to 2003. Proving the AWP’s utility in maintenance, Genie recently delivered three of its new “all-electric” Z-60/37 DC articulating boom lifts to Dubai Parks and Resorts, one of the prime operators of leisure destinations in the region. Testifying to its utility, Nishad Abdulla, assistant fleet manager, Dubai Parks and Resorts, says: “Thanks to its excellent range of motion, versatile, quiet, clean performance and four-wheel drive abilities, this new Genie model is an excellent and cost-effective alternative to separate diesel and electric powered units. For us, the Z-60/37DC boom definitely ticks all the right boxes.”
With safety of increasing concern for users, sector veterans such as Genie and JLG have brought in new technologies to prevent accidents.

ighter, longer, stronger. This was the mantra as Grove developed the TMS9000-2, its next-generation truck crane, which has just been unveiled. The new 100t capacity truck crane features a number of improvements over previous models that will enable owners to increase utilisation and lifting capabilities. It’s lighter, which increases roadability and helps customers meet North American gross vehicle weight requirements. It has a longer boom, which increases reach and enables lifters to complete a wider variety of applications. And the crane is stronger, with best-in-class load charts for all counterweight configurations. “The Grove TMS9000-2 is a clear example of The Manitowoc Way in action,” says Harrison Hipple, product manager for truck-mounted cranes at Manitowoc. “We brought our customers in at the earliest stages of designing this crane to ensure we made a product that fits their lifting needs. It was engineered with one goal in mind: to increase utilisation rates for customers and increase their return on investment in a truck crane.” The TMS9000-2 is approximately 363kg lighter than its predecessor, the TMS9000E. Its reduced, best-in-class gross vehicle weight enables a wider range of flexibility in carrying counterweight, cribbing and other items, which will help lifters optimise the crane for a variety of applications. The optimised truck crane will meet a diverse range of roading regulations across North America. Though the TMS9000-2 is lighter, its boom length and capacity have both increased. The crane features a new 51.6m six-section MEGAFORM boom that uses Grove’s Twin-Lock pinning system. It’s a greaseless boom, which reduces maintenance for owners. The improved reach will enable customers to complete a wider variety of applications with the crane, but from a compact chassis (width 2.6m, length 13.4m). The crane will offer manual or hydraulic swingaways, along with additional inserts, to provide further reach options. And with this increased reach comes increased capacity across all load charts. The crane’s 100t capacity makes it the strongest four-axle truck crane on the market, with the best load charts in its class. Both the boom and chassis are stronger on the TMS9000-2 than previous cranes, so there is more capacity across all radii. On average, load charts with maximum counterweight have improved by approximately 5% over its predecessor. The new model also shares the same counterweight system as the TMS9000E, so owners can interchange counterweights and wing weights from the previous-generation crane, giving them

flexibility in configurations across an entire fleet. In essence, the leading GVW enables owners to win and complete more jobs at a lower cost, improving their return on investment. Feature laden Overall operational efficiency is improved with the inclusion of the Crane Control System (CCS), Manitowoc’s standardised operating system that works across several crane brands and models. The TMS9000-2 not only offers six simple predefined boom sequences to maximize crane utilisation, it also incorporates powerful features found in CCS-equipped Grove all-terrain products. This includes a highly intuitive Boom Configurator Mode that makes it quick and easy to select the optimum boom position and length for a specific lift, maximising the crane’s capabilities. The operator simply inputs lift parameters and the system calculates the best configuration. Along with CCS, the crane’s cab has other improvements, such as a new air-conditioning system and ergonomic controls. A series of cameras on the TMS9000-2 assist operators while driving the crane or lifting. Reverse and passenger-side
blind spot cameras ensure operators can manoeuvre the crane with ease. And when lifting, a hoist camera provides convenient visibility of the hoists. A new outrigger system gives the TMS9000-2 added flexibility to position the crane on the job-site. While previousgeneration truck cranes had only three configurations, the new model has four: 0%, 33%, 66% and 100%. The new system is also 0.3m slimmer, measuring only 7m at full span, making the crane more compact on the job-site. The crane is powered by a Cummins ISX12 powertrain, an on-highway, EPAcertified engine that features 336kW (450bhp) at 1800rpm, and a maximum 210 Nm (1550lb-ft) torque. The engine is required in North America and fits even the strictest environmental requirements, such as those found in California. The TMS9000-2’s drivetrain, air suspension, brake and wheel systems are similar to those found on the TMS9000E. Customers also now have the choice of manual or automated manual transmission. Customer in focus The Grove TMS9000-2 reflects advancements in design and manufacturing borne from The Manitowoc Way, the
47 The philosophy Grove followed when designing the TMS9000-2 was to offer a stronger machine with an increased reach but at a reduced weight.
“The Grove TMS9000-2 is a clear example of The Manitowoc Way in action. We brought our customers in at the earliest stages of designing this crane to ensure we made a product that fits their lifting needs” company’s programme to deliver innovation at increased velocity that improves customer ROI. At its core, The Manitowoc Way puts the customer at the focus of new products and seeks to include them early in the design stage. For the TMS9000-2, a multidisciplinary, cross-functional team was put together to design the new-generation crane. This included representatives from design and engineering, quality control, production planning, sales, purchasing, manufacturing and more. Manitowoc customers were also included, as they were asked to provide feedback that would directly benefit them on the job-site and increase their own profitability. This quickly accomplished two goals. First, customers had direct influence on the crane at an earlier stage, which will lead to increased utilisation and ROI in the
field. Second, the speed at which the crane was brought to market was dramatically improved, with the TMS9000-2 being produced in only a third of the time it took to introduce previous cranes. Other reflections of The Manitowoc Way in the crane’s design and engineering include a Manitowoc hoist that features a best-in-class maximum line pull of 10,659kg and 293m cable capacity. And like all mobile cranes engineered at Manitowoc’s facility in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, each and every component of the TMS9000-2 has been scrutinised at its Product Verification Center to ensure durability and reliability from the ground up. “The Grove TMS9000-2 represents a significant advance in truck crane power and flexibility. With improved roadability, reach and capacity, companies will be able to complete a wider range of jobs at a lower cost, increasing utilisation and return on
investment,” Hipple said. “We know for a fact that customers are eager to have this new crane join their fleets because they have been with us from the beginning, helping us design a crane that will have a real impact on their own profitability.” Founded in 1902, The Manitowoc Company is a leading global manufacturer of cranes and lift solutions, with manufacturing, distribution and service facilities in 20 countries. Manitowoc is recognised as one of the premier innovators and providers of crawler cranes, tower cranes and mobile cranes for the heavy construction industry, complemented by a slate of industryleading after-market product support services. In 2016, Manitowoc’s revenues totalled $1.6 billion, with over half of these revenues generated outside the United States.
