Rising to the challenge No matter what improvemts man makes in science and technology, and whatever the cost of those breakthroughs, one thing will always remain constant: people will want to obtain the benefits at the least possible price. It follows, therefore, that the best technological breakthroughs are those that reduce costs, for they then serve the twin purpose of advancing knowledge and satisfying the consumer of those breakthroughs with their economy proposition. In the world of construction equipment, this is a paradigm not lost on an industry leader such as Caterpillar. Last month the machinery giant debuted the latest iteration of this concept of economical technology at its Learning and Development Centre in Malaga, Spain, in the form of a new range of excvators. The Next Generation, as Cat calls them, is the 320 range, comprising three models - the base 320GC, the mid-level 320 and the range topper 323. Where the real challenge lay in the design of the new machines was to use technology to increase efficiency and lower costs. And its a challenge that Cat seems ot have met with aplomb. As Cat unfailingly emphasised at the launch, the new 320 series has been designed with three magic figures in mind: 45, 25, 15. That’s a 45% increase in efficiency, a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and a 15% lowering of maintenance cost. Using innovative techniques, Cat has made technology work for the user by making it impact the best possible area of operations positively - the bottom line.

In this issue we bring you the low down on the new machines, right from the horses mouth in Malaga, and try to expalin why Cat tried to drill those three figures into the heads of the members of the global media attending the launch. Another area where techonlogy is making a positive impact on bottom lines is in the compact and mini equipment sector. As the GCC market moves towards maturity, the increasingly built-up and confined construction environment is seeing the adoption of compact machines picking up, just as they have done in advanced markets around the world. We talk to some of the key players in the sector to understand what the future has in store. Speaking of the future, as we wind down to the last couple of months of the year, at CMME towers we’re already mulling over the year and trying to put our heads together to predict the future - a sort of looking back to look ahead. To read about the fruit of out musing, watch this space.

Aldar awards $203m contract for The Bridges project

With the drilling work flagged off for the Route 2020 metro project in Dubai (‘Dubai ruler launches drilling of Route 2020 metro tunnel’, October 24), people living in some far-flung districts of the city can look forward to a more convenient commute when it is launched in 2019. The way the city has spread over the years, residents of many communities far from the city centre, or the main commercial areas, find it arduous and timeconsuming to travel for both work and leisure. With public transport not readily available in areas such as Dubai Investment Park, the next best option for people without cars is expensive taxis. The metro Route 2020, when it becomes operational, will not only provide a convenient and economical option for travellers but also integrate these areas on the fringes of the city with its nerve centres. Flyers using the new Dubai World Central airport, where the line will terminate, will also find the new metro line to be a boon. Expo 2020 may still be a couple of years away, but its benefits are

New SDLG backhoe for Middle East SDLG has launched a new backhoe loader for the Middle Eastern and African markets that claims several improvements over its predecessor. The VolvoCE-owned Chinese equipment major said the new B877F sideshift backhoe loader is half a ton lighter than its predecessor, the B877, and features a new engine, greater cab space and enhanced cooling capacity, as well as advanced loader linkage and other improvements. Part of SDLG’s F-series of backhoes, it is available as of this month. “SDLG backhoe loaders always receive a great deal of interest in the Middle East and Africa, and for good reason: they are extremely versatile and efficient machines. Whether you’re operating the loader or the excavator, the new B877F has the power and manoeuvrability to handle almost any job. Those looking

for a high-performing, reliable, easily operable and cost-effective backhoe need to look no further than SDLG,” said Henrik Sjöstrand, product manager at SDLG. The B877F has an improved loader linkage system for better breakout force and comes with a 1m3 capacity loader bucket as standard. Its 55-degree steering angle improves manoeuvrability, for working in confined areas. The B877F is fitted with a new 70kW Yuchai engine made by Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group. The new engine features the same power as the machine’s previous engine, but offers higher torque. It now supplies the hydraulic system with a constant flow, providing the operator with a reliable power supply for extended durations. The B877F is also fitted with a larger radiator, with an ambient temperature of 50 degrees Celsius.

EMC inaugurates dedicated test facility for Mercedes-Benz trucks

Emirates Motor Company (EMC), the authorised general distributor for MercedesBenz trucks in Abu Dhabi, has officially inaugurated an engine endurance testing facility in the UAE capital. EMC said the world-class facility is the only one of

its kind in the region and tests the heavy-duty trucks against all conditions, including the extreme high temperatures and sandy environment of the region. The purpose-built facility at EMC’s Commercial Vehicles division in Abu

Dhabi’s Mussafah area is one of 11 Daimler specialist test centres around the globe. According to EMC, the facility is unique in that it’s capable of testing the trucks at heavier loads and in hotter ambient conditions than any other global facility.

It enables MercedesBenz trucks to be tested against the most challenging desert conditions to ensure that they are safe and durable when travelling long distances. Dr Wolfgang Sladek, head of the Mercedes-Benz testing programme, said: “We really appreciate the testing cooperation with EMC here in Abu Dhabi, since this location provides extreme ambient conditions and allows for high gross vehicle weights. “That combination puts a lot of load on both our powertrain and the entire vehicle, which helps us find any possible weak spots fast to provide our customers with premium quality.”

KIT SPOTTING NOVEMBER APRIL 2016 2017

DemAg AllterrAin crAne At ViennA refinery

A

Demag AC 1000-9 allterrain crane has proved its capabilities in maintenance activities at the OMV refinery in Vienna, Austria. When the refinery required the 13t top section of a fractionating column to be replaced, OMV commissioned Austrian crane service provider Prangl for this challenging task, which required ample planning expertise. Prangle, in turn, relied on its Demag AC 1000-9 all-terrain crane for the job. “Whenever production operations have to stop at a refinery, it costs a fortune. This meant that, no matter what, we had to avoid delays when lifting the top section onto the fractionating column at the OMV refinery in Vienna,” Christian Fida, project manager at Prangl, points out. Leaving nothing to chance, the Prangl team planned the project with meticulousness. In doing so, they quickly determined that choosing the best crane for the job would be crucial. “Sure, the available space would have been enough for a smaller crane with a luffing jib, but we would have had to set up a long section of the lattice part over a pipe rack. Analysing the two possibilities, we opted for the main boom solution,” Fida explains. But it had to be one with enough capacity to lift the load to the required height of 70m while still maintaining an adequate safety reserve. It also had to be manoeuvrable enough to move through the labyrinthine refinery, with its numerous pipelines. “That meant that we had one

choice and one choice only: our Demag AC 1000-9, as it was the only crane that met both conditions in their entirety. The AC 1000 is our biggest telescopic crane, as well as one of the most powerful cranes in the world. That’s why we had it come from its previous work location in Hamburg all the way to Vienna without further ado,” Fida continues. The AC 1000 was also able to shine at the refinery thanks to another trait – ease of assembly. The Prangl technicians came up with a set-up strategy that took advantage of precisely this characteristic. First, they pre-assembled the crane with the 100m telescopic boom, Superlift system plus winch frame, and four outriggers in front of the refinery gates. Then crane operator Heinz Schuller manoeuvred it underneath two pipe racks and all the way to its location. Once there, the 188t counterweight was added and the outriggers were extended fully. With this configuration, the crane was ready to lift the 13t top section together with the slinging gear being used, to a height of 70m with a radius of 60m to install it on the fractionating column. “With that configuration, I would have even been able to lift 3.5t more, which means we had more than enough capacity reserve for the refinery job,” says Schuller, who thinks the crane was the perfect choice. The lift went off without a hitch. Combining professional planning with the right machine and a highly qualified team, the company successfully completed it on time.

COMMENT NOVEMBER 2017

Life beyond dieseL With governments and manufacturers envisioning a dieselfree future for on-road vehicles, volvo ce discusses the impact on the equipment industry and hoW loW emission Zones provide an insight

T

his July, the automotive industry was rocked by a far-reaching announcement when Volvo Cars stated that all its new cars would be electric or hybrid from 2019 on. The following day, the French government announced it would end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as a way to fight air pollution. A few weeks later, the British government followed with a similar proposal. But what will these bans mean for the construction industry and off-road vehicles? Construction equipment is largely run on diesel engines, and so far no official announcements have been made concerning their use once these bans come into effect. While decisions are yet to be made on what a diesel-free future means for construction equipment, Low Emission Zones (LEZs) currently provide an insight into how urban construction projects can have a less harmful effect on air quality right now. Air pollution is a contributing factor for hundreds of thousands of premature deaths each year, and diesel emissions are classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organisation. Therefore, reducing emissions from diesel engines is an important factor for improving health. In areas where air pollution levels are considered dangerously high, LEZs seek to improve air quality and make it safer to breathe by regulating the most polluting vehicles. These LEZs are almost exclusively found in city centres in some of the most economically advanced countries in the world. The European Union sets emission standards that define the acceptable amount of pollution that can be emitted by the exhaust of a vehicle sold in EU and EEA member states. Depending on the area, vehicles with higher emissions either cannot enter the area at all, or have to pay a fee if they do. To avoid the expense – real or perceived – of having to pay to

15 Volvo CE is developing eco-friendly solutions, such as electromobility, of which its fully-electric EX-2 excavator prototype is an example.

“Considering the seriousness of air pollution, and the moves governments are making, this is an area we believe will continue to be high on the agenda and one we are committed to finding solutions for”

bring construction machines into restricted areas, construction equipment firms are increasingly being asked by customers to fit a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to machines, to reduce the diesel particulate matter (black soot) coming from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. “In recent years, there has been a definite upswing in requests for DPFs to be fitted to machines that are working in urban development and don’t have them as standard,” says Kurt Deleu, director of regional sales support (Europe) at Volvo CE. “But it’s important to mention this is not always a clear legal requirement [of working in an LEZ].” If it’s not a legal requirement, why the requests? It seems Volvo CE customers are simply preparing for the future. “DPFs are currently seen as an extra precaution in response to a perceived need to meet regulations in LEZs,” Deleu says. “But as regulations around LEZs continue to become stricter, it’s likely this trend will continue.” Diverse regulations The tricky thing about LEZ requirements is that they are not harmonised across countries and are governed by different local or country-level regulations. For now, construction equipment manufacturers like Volvo CE deal with requests for DPFs on machinery on a case-by-case, country-bycountry basis. “All Volvo CE machines comply with EU emissions regulations, but at present DPFs are only fitted as standard to the EW60E compact wheeled excavator and ECR88D mini-digger, and as an option for the ECR58D in the smaller machine category,” confirms Deleu. The company is currently investigating factory solutions for all its smaller machines. Volvo demonstrated the EX2 prototype, a fully electric compact excavator that delivers zero emissions, ten times the efficiency and a tenth of the noise level, at the Volvo Group Innovation Summit in London earlier this year. It is believed to be the world’s first fully electric compact excavator prototype. While the concept machine is purely a research project at this stage, development of technologies connected to electromobility, intelligent machines and total site solutions that benefit customers and the environment continues. “Considering the seriousness of air pollution, and the moves governments are making to highlight it, this is an area we believe will continue to be high on the agenda, and one we are committed to finding solutions for,” Deleu concludes.

ecently, while I was looking through one of the news feeds that often ping into my inbox, I came across news that a Komatsu HD 605-7 dumper truck currently being used in a quarry in Switzerland is to be converted to a fully electric machine, which the owners say will be the world’s biggest electric vehicle. This comes hot on the heels of news that one of the largest global diesel engine manufacturers, Cummins, is preparing to take on the new kids on the block by developing an all-electric truck of its own. It even took the step of unveiling the Aeos truck in August. In addition to this, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has already launched a fully operational truck called the eCanter which can carry just over three tonnes and has a range of up to 130km on a single charge. In fact, Daimler is so confident about this model that it already has plans to put it into full production in 2019 with the aim of building some 10,000 units per year. A lot of you reading this, particularly in the GCC region, are probably wondering what the fuss is, as in this part of the world it will take years – if not decades – for this type of technology to start to appear. However, I am not so sure it will be that long before we start to see far more all-electric vehicles on the streets of the UAE, especially when you consider that a company founded only 14 years ago now supplies its own car to countries across the globe and is ever more present on the streets of Dubai. This company is of course Tesla, which opened its first showroom in the UAE over the summer and whose cars can frequently be seen driving around the city. However, not content with just the car market, the company announced plans in April to add a new semi-truck to its range. The rumour mill in the automotive industry hints that as early as this month, Tesla will unveil a long-haul truck capable of travelling up to 480km on a single charge. In such an oil-rich part of the world, where the internal combustion engine has ruled for so many years, can this type of technology catch

on? I initially thought, like many others, that it would be years before electric vehicles became common. But then I saw the news of the Komatsu dumper truck and that Cummins is looking at developing an electric engine. First, the idea that a heavy-duty vehicle such as a dumper would ever use anything other than the workhorse of the engine world – the diesel engine – was incomprehensible. Next, the idea that Cummins, a company that has lived and breathed diesel engines for the entirety of its 98-year history, should design an electric vehicle would probably be enough to make founder Cecil Lyle Cummins turn in his grave. These are changing times, and for a company like Cummins to stay at the forefront of engine manufacturing, it needs to move with the times or risk being left behind by companies such as Tesla. So with many governments turning towards cleaner technology in a bid to reduce harmful climate-changing emissions, it is probably inevitable that we will start to see these changes in the GCC. But here is where there could be an unseen benefit to the construction sector in this region, as in order for electric vehicles to be able to operate efficiently, a full network of charging stations and other infrastructure will need to be put in to allow complete regional coverage. For the time being, the sight of electric cars will still be a novelty. However, next time you are filling up at the petrol station, just ponder how long it will be before we are all plugging into a charger instead.

trait of leaders in any field is an appreciation for the details and a desire to get things right. It’s no different in the equipment and automotive business, as was proved in the UAE last month by two leading lights of their respective fields – DAF Trucks and Al Naboodah Group Enterprises (ANGE). As a manufacturer of heavy-duty and commercial trucks, DAF Trucks needs no introduction for most people in the West. The Dutch manufacturer is one of the preeminent truck-makers of Europe, in the same league on the continent as Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Iveco, Man and their ilk. However, while almost all these brands are well-known, respected and highly visible on the roads in this region, DAF is conspicuous by its absence. But that is changing. DAF will soon be seen again on UAE roads, after it signed a distributor partnership agreement with Al Naboodah Group Enterprises (ANGE). The operative word here, though, is ‘again’. Around six or seven years ago DAF Trucks was very much present in the UAE market, but circumstances conspired to make it exit. So what’s changed now, CMME asked Michiel Kuujs, director of sales operations, DAF Trucks, and Ajit Kumar, COO, Commercial, Transport and Electrical at ANGE, at the launch event in Dubai last month. “It just didn’t work out,” says Kuijs of DAF’s previous foray into the market. “Also, having the right partner is half the battle won, which we have now in Al Naboodah Group Enterprises. As a premium brand, DAF wanted to be sure that we had a well-respected and very professional partner that represents our values. We looked for a partner who shares our ambitions in terms of quality, after-sales, services and customer satisfaction. We found the right partner for the future in ANGE, with a proven track record just like DAF.” Being a family-owned business, just like DAF, also helped in understanding each other, adds ANGE’s Kumar. It’s an understanding forged over the years; during the time that DAF was away from the UAE truck market, the Dutch manufacturer was still present in the country’s bus sector, where it was able to forge a strong partnership with Al Naboodah. In fact, ANGE supplied more than

19 With Al Naboodah as its partner. DAF Trucks is aiming to penetrate the ready-mix and concrete sectors in the UAE, along with the heavy construction field.

500 DAF buses to Dubai RTA through the past decade while DAF was absent from the truck market, Kumar points out. “Our relationship with DAF is an old one. Even when DAF products were running with the RTA, we had their experts coming in to train our technicians and engineers. So we knew each other well,” says Kumar. “But to get DAF Trucks back to the UAE has been a long journey. It’s taken us many years, several interviews and long discussions to get DAF to make a re-entry into this market. DAF is one of the largest and leading brands in the truck sector, and for us to meet their stringent standards and requirements was a big challenge. We of course had to pass the criteria that DAF has for dealers, which we were engaged in doing for the last two years, working aggressively together to launch DAF Trucks in the UAE market.” Developed over a decade But getting the right partner was not the only detail DAF looked into while getting its second coming right. The trucks themselves were developed over the past 10 years to suit difficult markets like the Middle East, and Kuijs is confident that performance will be the calling card of DAF products in the UAE market. Those products will be expanded to include the entire DAF range, with the 6x4 and 4x2 Euro 3 already being sold by ANGE. “Apart from heavy haulage, we are also looking at the ready-mix and concrete sectors, and are looking to break into the heavy, rigid construction truck sector soon as well,” Kumar says. Confident about both his own company and its new Dutch partner, he adds that the Al Naboodah Group has always been looking for important global players to associate with. “We are one of the leading commercial vehicle suppliers in the UAE and are continuously looking to expand our portfolio with world-class products and services. With that in our minds, we partner with brands that best fit our philosophy of bringing to the market products that add value to us, to our customers and to all stakeholders who are part of this ecosystem. DAF is a prime example of such as partner.” Echoing those sentiments, Kuijs adds: “Customer satisfaction and low cost of ownership are of vital importance to us. In accordance with that, you have to find partners such as ANGE that share the same values and understand the challenges.” With their vision and goals aligned, DAF Trucks and ANGE seem like the coming together of two leaders in their fields, focused on getting things right.

he warehouse of the future will be a place of precision engineering where human involvement is minimal, and robots and automated technologies come together to provide an error-free environment in which goods are received, sorted, stacked, retrieved and dispatched with an accuracy that is beyond manual possibilities. And with Arau-, Switzerland, headquartered Swisslog, that future is now. “Managing energy efficiency and small order fulfilment are two of the greatest challenges facing modern logistics operations, according to our research,” says Alain Kadoum, general manager for the Middle East at Swisslog. “As a leader in robotic, data driven and flexible automated solutions, these are what we have put our minds to and come up with solutions. Swisslog is dedicated to helping companies improve the efficiency, productivity and cost effectiveness of their intralogistics operations.” Intralogistics is evolving from large, rigid systems into modular, flexible, and software-driven solutions, Kadoum tells

CMME. “The future is robot-supported and self-optimising. And Swisslog is at the forefront of these Industry 4.0 initiatives, providing innovative solutions for the retail/e-Commerce, pharmaceutical, food & beverage and automotive industries.” Recent whitepapers from Swisslog have addressed the challenges facing fulfillment operations in the rapidly growing e-commerce industry. Kadoum reveals the company’s findings are that an omni-channel or dedicated e-commerce fulfillment centre utilising a streamlined, highly-efficient automated goods-toperson solution can expect to see a doubling or tripling in picking activity over conventional manual picking methods. “Providing extensive knowledge and insight into the options available to distribution centres facing the challenge of small order fulfillment, our latest innovation, AutoPiQ, enables direct cooperation between pickers and robots. When networked with automated goodsto-person warehouse systems, such as CycloneCarrier, AutoStore or CarryPick, AutoPiQ is able to assist human workers with picking tasks, permitting workers to focus more on value-added services,” Kadoum explains.

22

LOGISTICS NOVEMBER 2017

While automation has offered endless benefits to operations around the globe, some users are concerned with the increased energy demands required to run the systems. Kadoum says that Swisslog’s research has addressed these concerns by looking at how businesses can benefit from automation while remaining energy efficient. “The most efficient shuttle and robotics systems have been engineered to reduce carrier weight and optimise weight/payload ratios for lessened energy requirements,” Kadoum says. “Since these systems provide dense storage capacity, they are also ideal for minimising refrigeration energy costs, when compared to manual small quantity picking in traditional refrigerated warehouses.” Another automated warehousing innovation from Swisslog is PowerStore – a compact storage system for pallets. The compact system supports storage depth up to 20x and beyond per channel within a rack design. This rack design can have 10 or more levels and adapts to virtually any building topography, accommodating existing support walls as well as multi-level and barrel roofs. “PowerStore utilises virtually every square metre,” confirms Kadoum. He adds that the system is already popular in the US at places such as Pepsi Bottling Ventures (PBV), a major US manufacturer, seller and distributor of PepsiCo beverages. PowerStore has the potential to increase storage capacity by as much as 60%, he adds. The system is being rolled out now in Europe and will soon be extended to other parts of the world. Explaining its working, Kadoum adds: “Row and aisle carriers are used for pallet storage and retrieval. Vertical conveyors allow these carriers to be used on any rack level. At PBV, PowerStore’s high dynamics support 580 pallet operations (storage and retrieval) per hour.” PowerStore is part of Swisslog’s technology offerings that meet the requirements of Industry 4.0. It displays great flexibility when used across industries and can be deployed in diverse environments including deep-freezes with temperatures as low as -30°C, Kadoum points out. Underpinning the PowerStore system is Swisslog’s in-house warehouse management software platform – SynQ. Explaining the platform, Kadoum says its name is a shortened version of synchronised intelligence, and it was designed to be a flexible and adaptable cloud-enabled software that intelligently

connects and synchronises automation equipment, robotics, people and processes. The software’s ability to adapt to future technology will see users benefit from a future-proof operation, where additional functionality can be securely added, helping businesses capitalize on the opportunities emerging as Industry 4.0 evolves. “SynQ provides the software platform that future hardware will rely on,” Kadoum says. “To get the most out of automation and robotics we are increasingly reliant on data and interconnectivity. It’s what is driving Industry 4.0 forward and allows users to deliver on promises to customers in the smartest way possible.” SynQ not only encompasses warehouse management, material flow and automation control systems functionality, it also provides an array of business intelligence tools that allow smart forecasting through real-time data analysis, in a modular platform. “SynQ functionality, services and crucial supporting processes are organised around three pillars: Collaboration Platform, Operational Services and Intelligence Services,” explains Kadoum. “Collaboration Platform modules provide continuity no matter the level of automation the business has installed, while Operational Services deliver industry-standard processes and high-speed automation for maximum performance. Finally, Intelligent Services allow smart growth in a dynamically changing market.” An important Swisslog customer in the GCC region that is reaping the rewards of SynQ is Dubai-based bottled water company Mai Dubai. The company’s warehouse on the outskirts of the city already runs the system to track incoming inventory, order logging and dispatch. Speaking about the system’s performance, Jay Andres, CEO, Mai Dubai, says: “SynQ enables us to add a huge measure of efficiency to our operations, even when we are using a relatively basic warehousing system. The best thing about the system is that it is ready for upward integration with future system. We are installing a fully-automated warehousing system from Swisslog, which will become operational in a few months, and SynQ is already able to handle the new system. “Some people ask me the reason behind the price of bottled drinking water staying the same for more than a decade, despite the all-round inflation in the market. My answer is ‘superior logistics’, helped by companies such as Swisslog.”

COVER STORY NOVEMBER 2017

I

t’s a warm autumn evening in the hills over Malaga and there is a sense of expectation in the air. Over 70 journalists from almost an equal number of countries in the Europe, Africa and Middle East region have congregated at Caterpillar’s Learning and Demonstration Centre outside the Spanish coastal city for probably the most important event in years for the world’s leading construction equipment maker – the launch of its new 20t excavators. A closely guarded secret for long, Cat had been working on simplifying and streamlining its excavator line-up - and introducing a ‘global platform’ - for a while. The 20t class is the first range on which the manufacturer chose to introduce its new platform, new technologies and changes. As darkness creeps in on the sprawling compound of the Cat facility, all action is concentrated on an open air amphitheatre facing an arena carved out of the hillside - a quarry and an earthmoving job-site in one. With 70 pairs of expectant, inquisitive eyes of the international press and as many camera lenses trained on the wide patch of dirt in front of them, a sound and light show begins. Projected on to the sand of the arena

and two angled screens hung from latticed bars and posts in the middle of the area is a kaleidoscopic choreography of images and videos, accompanied by music and a voiceover. Presently, a light illuminates the area behind the angled screen and the silhouette of an excavator can be discerned. Growing brighter with every pulsating drum beat, the light behind the screen gradually brings into focus the entire excavator until finally, with the music reaching a crescendo, the curtains drop to reveal the new Cat 320 excavator, gleaming in its bright Cat yellow. As the spotlights come on, basking the new entrant into the Cat family in its full glare, an impressed gathering takes in the sight. So ends the ‘Night of the Challenger’, as Cat calls it – the first act of a “play in three acts”. The second act begins the next morning. Inside an auditorium in the premises, Damien Giraud, vice president of Caterpillar’s construction and infrastructure industries, and Herwig Peschl, the company’s global marketing manager, dwell on the details of how Caterpillar has expanded its hydraulic excavator – or HEX - product line with the addition of three new models. The company unveiled its entire next generation 20-ton size class excavators – the 320 GC, the 320, and the

27 323 – during the press event and Peschl informs that the trio will be available in the Middle East from the second quarter of 2018. The mantra for the 320 range was a threepronged one and three buzzwords emerge – or buzz-numbers. “Up to 45% efficiency improvement for the operator, up to 25% reduction in fuel consumption, and up to 15% maintenance cost reduction – this is game changing,” says Peschl. The three figures are repeated often over the next few hours until their importance is established. Indeed 45-25-15 was the mantra behind the new line-up and several Cat officials explain in their presentations how achieving the figures has led to the new machines becoming game-changers. “Game changing is what we’re about. We keep investing into our products and services to make sure we satisfy our customers by giving them what they have been asking for,” says Peschl. Addressing the gathering, Damien Giraud, vice president of Caterpillar’s construction and infrastructure industries, commented: “Our intent is to transform the industry with this new launch. If you take the excavator segment, from 10t to 90t, it is worth $22bn in sales globally. A manufacturer can thrive only if it thrives in the excavator business. This is why Cat has been, is and will be dedicated to bringing world- leading excavators to its customers.” Speaking about productivity in construction, Giraud reveals that compared

to fields such as manufacturing, the jobsite productivity index for the sector has shown the least improvement in the past 20 years. “Our customers are aware of this. And they are demanding more productivity from us; they’re asking for more efficiency; and they’re asking for lower costs,” he says. “This is the new challenge for us in the market and it is why we are investing in new product lines – to make their life better. Now it’s all about customer value. We are redirecting all our research and development investment into meeting the challenge of what creates maximum value for customers. “When you look at these new machines we have introduced, from the outside, they look pretty much like any other excavator out there. But from the inside it’s a totally different game. The innovation in these machines is at an incredible level. We have put into these machines a base of electro-hydraulic components and a number of sensors that will allow us over the next 20 years to programme the machine the way we want – for efficiency, better productivity, lower fuel consumption and extra safety. This is what will help us to create superior customer satisfaction and make an average operator a great operator.” “Another point I would like to make is that this platform is a true global platform. The only thing you will see changing from one region to another is the engine arrangement because regulations are different depending on where you are in the world, in terms of emissions regulations. But the machine itself, the technology itself, and all of what is going to create customer value are exactly the same. “It’s a true first global platform that we will be shipping from our factories with the same quality wherever you are.” Explaining the concepts behind the Next Generation 20t excavators that went into renewing the whole line, Peschl adds: “We listened extensively to our customers. We did thousands of interviews and what we call ‘Voice of the Customer’ to gauge what do our customers really want and expect from us. What it boiled down to were three concepts: simplification, innovation and choices.” Peschl explains that Cat is simplifying its entire product line, whittling down 28 platforms for its excavation line-up to 12, which helps customers by reducing the number of parts and giving them more commonality or parts between product lines. There are also 16 different cabs in Cat’s product line, which the company is bringing

“it’s a true first global platform that we will be shipping from our factories with the same quality wherever you are” down to only three to enable operators to switch more seamlessly between machines and not having to learn to operate one all over again after having gotten used to another. There is a similar simplification across parts, such as bringing down 15 different types of air filters to only four. “In terms of innovation, our attention to operator efficiency, with which we seek to

29

transform an average operator to a great one with electronic aids, coupled with improving the fuel economy of our machines - which are already class-leading in the department - and reducing maintenance costs through extending service intervals and the life of our parts – all of this taken together is a huge help to customers in their running costs and cash flow,” Peschl says.

Raising efficiency by 45%, lowering fuel consumption by 25% and reducing maintenance costs by 15% is Cat’s mantra behind the 320 series models.

In terms of choices, the Next Generation model line-up tackles the fundamental requirements of customers with their design and features. “The 320 GC is designed for low- to medium-duty applications and offers the lowest machine cost per hour along with the lowest fuel consumption. The 320 is intended for medium- to heavy-duty applications and returns the lowest jobsite

cost of the trio. The 323 offers the most power and lift capacity, promising maximum productivity. It is the revenue maximiser and the heavy- duty digger of the bunch,” explains Peschl. Safety is the next big feature of the Next Generation. Julien Roux, regional product application manager, EAME, points out that all the excavator cabs come equipped with standard features like keyless push-button start, large standard touchscreen monitors with jog dial keys for control and soundsuppressed rollover protective structures (ROPS) to offer the next level of operator comfort, safety and quiet operation. Programmable joystick buttons for response and pattern allow the operator to dial in productivity settings. New advanced viscous mounts reduce cab vibration by up to 50% over previous models to reduce operator fatigue. “All the cabs are now ROPS cabs for the entire global market,” Roux explains about the other safety features. “With optional cameras in the front and back we offer a 360-degree bird’s eye view on the same in-cab display to enhance the operator’s sight-lines in all directions. Thanks to the redesigned fuel tank, we now have a very safe cab access path and safety is further enhanced with the new design positioning all daily checks points at ground level.” With all the new technology and design under its skin, the Next Generation 320 range is truly one with which Cat has risen to the challenge of the modern construction environment and pushed the bar further.

New Case CX145C sR eXCavatoR Why get it? Improved fuel economy, mInImum taIl swIng and power modes The Case CX145C SR has a compact boom placement and a design that locates the counterweight in a strategic way to enable it to tackle rough surfaces and restricted conditions and still return high productivity and efficiency figures. The excavator also comes with a Power Boost feature which adds extra muscle to its performance on demand – especially handy when tackling challenging conditions. Fuel efficiency is another feather in the CX145C SR’s cap. The excavator is powered by an Isuzu 4 JJ 1X engine, which meets international standards in terms of its green credentials and also consumes less fuel while producing the right amount of torque to make various construction tasks a breeze. Fuel savings of up to 9.2% result from the upgrades in the Case CX145C SR minimumswing-radius excavator, compared to its predecessor, the B version. The engine delivers 100hp with CEGR technology and the Case Intelligent Hydraulic System manages the engine and hydraulics, which gives the CX145C SR a 4% faster cycle time and 9% more lift capacity, Case says. Three power modes are available – speed priority, heavy duty and automatic – and automatic Power Boost provides extra power. The excavator offers over 9t of digging force and maximum digging depth of 5.5m.

Case says that not only will it get more working hours throughout the day, owners will also enjoy their investment for many years to come because of its build quality and the use of the finest materials specifically designed to withstand the wear and tear of tough job-sites, extreme weather conditions and other elements. Operator comfort is another area where the CX145C SR excels. The excavator’s reduced engine noise levels play a key role in reducing operator fatigue. Inside the cab, the controls are ergonomically designed to ensure that the most commonly used features are easily accessible and can be quickly activated and deactivated. Cab improvements include 6% more space and 28% more airflow. To maximise uptime and improve performance, the CX145C SR uses a high-performance filtration system with filters that eliminate fuel residues that contaminate engine oil and damage components. Oil change interval also extends up to 500 hours, and daily maintenance checks are easy with ground-level access to key components. KNOw ThE mAchiNE One of the first tasks should be to review a machine’s operation and maintenance manual to become familiar with the machine’s safety features, instrumentation, controls, service schedules and maintenance points. Typically delivered and stored in an excavator’s cab, the manual contains the official manufacturer recommendations. If misplaced, an authorised dealer can provide replacements.

FilTErs There are multiple filters on a compact excavator for the fuel, engine, air and hydraulic systems, and each may have different service intervals. When dirty or completely clogged, a filter can have a direct impact on performance and compromise sensitive components. Most models have air filter restriction indicators designed to alert operators to maintenance needs. To avoid system contamination, only remove the filter at the required time.

05 uNdErcArriAgE The most obvious wear item on most compact excavator undercarriages is the track. Mainly made of rubber, its life expectancy largely depends on operating habits and the environment it is subjected to. Tracks should be examined daily for cuts, tears or areas that expose the steel imbeds. The most important undercarriage interval item to monitor is track tensioning – a loose track is likely to de-track and will be detrimental to its useful life. Also, regular monitoring of components like idlers, rollers and sprockets can help identify potential problems.

Fluids ANd lubricANTs Checks fluids daily, including coolants, hydraulic fluids and engine oils, and refill with the recommended type. In addition to engines, also regularly lubricate all key pivot points at recommended intervals, including cylinders, booms, blades, buckets, arms and slew bearing components, with a quality lithium-based multipurpose grease.

sAFETy Despite their small size, compact excavators are rugged and versatile in a wide variety of conditions, and often work in challenging off-highway and rough terrain applications. Operators should understand what every lever and control does and how to operate the machine safely. They should always follow manufacturer instructions for maintaining ROPS /TOPS cab structures and make sure their mounting hardware is secure. Other safety items like seat belts should be properly tensioned and in good working condition.

ElEcTricAl sysTEm The electrical systems of most compact excavators use a 12-volt battery and fuses to protect it in the event of an electrical overload. Always replace failed fuses with like kind and amperage rating. Battery cables should be tight and clean. Inspect for corrosion on cable ends and the battery terminals. Prevention can typically be remedied with an appropriate dielectric grease.

07 iNsTrumENTATiON Some compact excavators are equipped with onboard instrumentation systems with controllers that perform multiple maintenance-oriented functions. If the need arises, these systems can log and display machine vitals like fluid temperatures and coolant levels. These controllers can also warn operators when system parameters are out of synch, and are engineered to shut down the machine to prevent catastrophic damage if an operator does not heed warning messages.

MACHINE FOCUS NOVEMBER 2017

The compacTs are coming With more buildings to maintain and increasingly confined spaces to Work in, the small equipment sector in the region is on a groWth path that the major manufacturers are looking to leverage With neW models and services

O

ne of the paradoxes observed globally in the field of construction equipment is that as an economy becomes bigger and matures, the smaller equipment class keeps gaining importance and market share. It’s been seen in the North American, European and Japanese markets, and now the trend seems to have come to the GCC region. The simple explanation for this is explained by Gaby Rhayem, the Middle East head of compact equipment specialist Bobcat. “Bobcat spotted some trends early. Now you already see a lot of buildings in the region. And there are green spaces being created as well. When landscaping, doing maintenance in a built-up community or making a swimming pool in a villa, you won’t take a 20t excavator into these places. You need smaller equipment,” he explains.

39 With its zero tail swing design, confined spaces such as built-up, urban environments are no constraints for the E17z, Bobcat’s new 1.7t excavator.

BOBCAt E17z

the benefit of Zero tail sWing Bobcat’s new 1.7t E17z Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) canopy model completes the company’s 1-2 tonne range of compact excavators. The new machine’s features include a roomy and comfortable operator area, ease of transport thanks to a shipping weight close to 1.6t as well as impressive digging forces and working range, and fast hydraulic performance in terms of low cycle times. In the new E17z, Bobcat takes the ZTS functionality a level further using its Zero House Swing (ZHS) design, in which the front upper structure is also fully protected by ensuring the front corners are kept within the swing circle when the tracks are in the fully expanded position. As a result, the ZHS functionality on the E17z provides the peace-of-mind of 320-degree of free rotation when working close to walls and other obstructions, without sacrificing on operator comfort or performance. The E17z operator environment is built around the operator, providing optimal ergonomics for operators of all sizes with easy access to the pedals and controls. The large canopy and entry/exit space provide the driver with plenty of room to get into and out of the operator’s seat and this is further helped by the left hand control console lifting completely out of the way. The hydraulic system on the E17z makes the best possible use of the engine power. Fast cycle times, combined with smooth control of class-leading breakout forces, provide maximum productivity. Boom and arm cylinder cushioning - unique in this class - enhance the overall smoothness of the workgroup. The E17z’s hydraulic system is a combination of variable piston pumps and a gear pump. The impressive dump height on the E17z allows it to load trucks easily, while the reach at ground level means the machine does not need to be repositioned as often when digging.

MACHINE FOCUS NOVEMBER 2017

Having spotted the trend, Bobcat approached it strategically, he adds. “We needed a product for the prevailing applications. Early in 2016 we set a target for ourselves - to become the No.1 in the overall compact equipment business for ME and Africa. We met internally, brainstormed, and set this goal for ourselves. “We needed to keep our position in the segments that we were already leading in, such as in the skid-steer loaders, while we needed to increase our market share in the mini-excavator and telehandler areas. We’ve cornered the compact track loader market with a near 100% market share this year. We’ve retained the leading positon we had last year in the mini excavator segment, while in the skid-steer loader segment, which we traditionally dominate, our market share has gone up from around 47% to 55%, a gain of around eight percentage points,” Rhayem reveals. “So, according to AEM figures, we are at about 34.7% share of the entire compact segment, up from 29% at the same time last year. However, the biggest news is elsewhere – in the backhoe loaders. Our market share this year has jumped to 17.9% from 4.73% at the end of last year. This is, of course, a huge gain – and it’s way beyond the 10% goal we were thinking of when we launched it last year. Our share of the mini excavator segment has also grown to 16.6%, we had 7.3% of the telehandler market in the region and in skid-steers we continued riding rough shod over the competition

with a 55% market share. “If you take the total of 1,568 pieces of compact equipment sold so far this year, 572 of them have been Bobcat. We are at 36% market share, compared to 29% at the same time last year, gaining 7% of total share. Between us and the No.2 in the market, we have a difference of more than 11% in market share, making us the

runaway leaders in the compact equipment segment at the moment,” he points out. The customer’s main priority with these compact machines, as with all others, is their quality and reliability, Rhayem explains. They must also be simple and easy to operate smoothly on the site by a wide range of operators. The small machines perform a wide variety of tasks,

from general carrying functions, grading and landscaping to digging and loading materials. With all these uses in mind, another manufacturer that is putting a range of compact equipment in place is Case construction equipment. Franco Invernizzi, Case’s head of Middle East operations, tells CMME that while the overall picture for all

markets in the Middle East is that they are under significant downward pressure, the compact machine market is less affected than the higher value, heavy line products. Case is one of the major players in the compact segment globally, and offers a comprehensive line-up of skid-steer and compact tracked loaders, mini excavators and backhoe loaders. Speaking about how Case products are doing in the regional market Invernizzi says: “The Case SR130 and SR150 compact skid steer loaders are among the most popular machines across the Middle East. These products ideally match the requirements of the customer base, offering high machine uptime at competitive price levels. There is also a growing segment for the midrange skid steers, such as the Case SR220. These give higher payload capability but also offer high auxiliary flow to power larger attachments such as the rocksaw. This attachment is used extensively on projects for utility cabling.” Coming to the mini excavators, he says this is the new emergent class in the region and realising its importance here and future potential, Case is launching a new range of machines in the 1.5t to 4t sector. “Designed to provide exceptional performance these machines offer the ideal solution to the Middle East market. The machines’ compact size yet strong digging performance ensure maximum productivity for our customers,” he explains. “Our strategy is to provide our highquality products, with competitive finance packages along with excellent parts and service backup across the region. And the launch of our new mini excavators offers the chance to penetrate and attack the growing mini market. “We continue to invest in our products and services to offer the best value proposals to our customers. Over the last year we have invested significantly in the Case support in the region, doubling the size of our regional office in Dubai and also opening our new Middle East parts distribution centre in Jebel Ali. We will continue to invest with our distribution network to continuously improve our products and service offerings,” says Invernizzi. Like Case, Wacker Neuson also invests in its products and services. The German manufacturer, which specialises in mini and compact equipment, is arguably the best-known brand in its sector worldwide. While not as visible in the Middle East as it is Europe or other advanced markets, the

company has probably the most extensive line-up of products in the category, including those that will benefit customers in this region. Alexander Greschner, chief sales officer, Wacker Neuson, feels that a new alliance will go a long way in increasing penetration in the Middle East as well as in other areas where the brand needs more visibility. “We have just recently announced a strategic alliance with John Deere. The agreement covers the sale of Kramerbranded compact equipment, known as the “green line”. This range is developed and manufactured at the Kramer site in Pfullendorf, Germany, and includes allwheel steered wheel loaders, telescopic wheel loaders and telehandlers, which John Deere will recommend to its strong network of dealers. The collaboration will initially focus on Europe, expanding later to the CIS countries, North Africa and the Middle East,” he says. A special aspect about Wacker Neuson is its keen interest and track record in developing electric-powered machines.

Commenting on the state of the electric equipment market, Greschner says: “Electric drives are becoming increasingly important, also because they are increasingly demanded by the markets. These solutions represent an interesting addition to products with combustion engines, especially for rental companies. The sales figures of our ‘zero emission’ solutions are noticeably rising. The ‘zero emission’ series currently includes two battery-powered rammers, the dual power excavator, an electrically operated track dumper, an articulated electric wheel loader and the first all-wheelsteered wheel loader with an electric drive from Kramer. “Our aim is to offer a real alternative as an emission-free solution in every product group in the foreseeable future. The battery-operated wheel loader WL20e has been available with a highquality AGM battery since the start of the year. Wacker Neuson will focus on electric drives in the future as well and continue to develop the existing series.”

hen it comes to earthmovers, few other categories of equipment stand for power and brute force like a bulldozer does. And when it comes to equipment manufacturers, few other brands spell quality and innovation as Liebherr does. So when the two – the bulldozer and Liebherr - come together, what customers get are products with some of the best reputations in the market for performance and reliability. Liebherr’s dozer line-up already includes a wide sweep of models, from the small 15t PR 716 to the 70t behemoth PR 776. A comprehensive range of weight classes are covered by the Teutonic equipment giant, with models in the 40, 30 and 24t classes. What was missing from the Liebherr dozer stable, however, was an updated presence in the popular 50t class. And now, with the introduction of the new PR 766 dozer – or crawler tractor, as Liebherr says – that missing piece of the line-up jigsaw has finally fallen in place. The new PR 766 crawler tractor offers the best conditions for continuing the success story of Liebherr crawlers, now in the 50t category. With operating weights of between 46.2t and 54.2t, the PR 766 is the successor model to the successful PR 764. The latest model in the crawler tractor generation, the PR 766 is driven by a powerful 422hp, 8-cylinder V-engine. With a blade capacity from 13.6 to 17 cubic metres and a travel speed of 11kph, it has all the basic attributes necessary to be a hard-punching machine in its weight class. According to Leibherr, the PR 766 is characterised by a few innovations and improvements over its predecessor. The first of these is an engine management system with proactive power adjustment and an Eco mode to optimise machine performance and fuel consumption. A very significant step in the PR 766 is that it achieves Stage IV/Tier 4 emission standards by means of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) only without the use of a diesel

46

particulate filter (DPF). Another improvement is in the ergonomics department where the new developments in design enable the operator to work more efficiently, safely and comfortably. Reliability is also improved through the Liebherr drive technology. The diesel unit in the PR 766 embodies the latest generation of Liebherr engine technology and therefore complies with the most advanced emission standards in the world. In this generation of engines, Liebherr combines emission reduction in compliance with the applicable standards with additional combustion savings in two technological steps. First, an optimised combustion process minimises the particles while they are still inside the engine. Liebherr has achieved this by developing its own Liebherr common rail injection system in conjunction with the engine control also developed by the company. In the second step, the exhaust gas after-treatment concept uses selective catalytic reduction. As a result, the new Liebherr diesel engines surpass Stage IV/ Tier 4 emission standards without the use of a diesel particulate filter. As a result of the hydrostatic drive in the PR 766, the speed of the diesel engine can be kept constant in practical use regardless of the required load. The unit therefore always runs at the optimum efficient speed. The fact that speed fluctuations are avoided, sets the Liebherr travel drive apart from all other large crawler tractor drive concepts currently available on the market, the company claims. Essential drivetrain components are developed in-house and optimally coordinated, which increases the efficiency of the system as a whole. As with all of Liebherr’s Generation 6 crawler tractors, the PR 766 comes equipped with the ‘ECO function’. This gives the driver the opportunity to choose between high performance and maximum efficiency. In lightweight to moderately heavy applications, the ECO control system ensures increased efficiency and therefore additional fuel savings compared to conventional drive concepts. The proactive power adjustment is another innovative feature of Generation 6. This involves both internal engine and external machine parameters being recorded, such as the deflection of the drive joystick, and the engine power is automatically increased for a short period based on the current demand. As well as enhanced response behaviour, this results in a noticeable improvement in performance capability and torque output. The new PR 766 Litronic is equipped with an oscillating undercarriage as standard. This allows the track rollers to be flexibly adapted to the surface. As a result, the machine’s

traction, but also its smooth running, is significantly increased, particularly when used on stony ground. Unevenness in the ground is ironed out through the elastic suspension and impact loads are reduced to a minimum. This not only increases comfort for the driver, but also improves the service life of the undercarriage and reduces the wear on the installed components and the steel structure. When operating crawler tractors in low temperatures, Liebherr offers numerous special options ex-works, which have been developed in close collaboration with end users. Other extreme conditions are also dealt with without fuss by the machine and Kai Friedrich, the company’s managing director, earthmoving and mining division, says Liebherr products have key advantages in the current market, notably technical reliability and durability – especially in the challenging heat, humidity and dust levels of the Middle East, as proven by the five models popular here, starting from the 20t-class PR734 to the giant 70t-class PR776. Speaking to CMME in an earlier interview, Friedrich had said: “Our machines have been proven to be very reliable. They are certified,

and as a result they are accepted by large global companies, all of which have strict safety requirements.”

A 422hp eightcylinder engine gives the PR 766 a maximum travel speed of 11kph and enough power to make the grade, no matter how tough the terrain.

Intuitive operation Speaking of safety turns the focus immediately to the operator and his environment. Liebherr says that the large cab in the PR 766 is identical to the driver’s platform in the 70t PR 776 crawler tractor launched last year. During the development of this new driver’s platform, the focus was placed on simple and safe machine operability. The driver will get to grips with the interior of the modern cab designed for maximum comfort immediately and intuitively. With Liebherr’s successful singlelever operation, the driver can control all driving and steering movements with just one joystick. The spacious work area in the PR 766 provides the best conditions for effortless work. The special features in the cab include the centralised control elements and the touch-controlled colour display, as well as many storage areas and a climatecontrolled storage compartment. The driver can use the central display to intuitively

“Our machines have been proven to be very reliable. They are certified, and as a result they are accepted by large global companies, all of which have strict safety requirements” control important operating parameters, such as the ECO function, the travel drive’s response behaviour and the steering, and use comfort and safety functions, for example the rearview camera, which is fitted as a standard. The driver can adjust the control elements for the travel drive, blade and rear-mounted ripper to the most suitable ergonomic position for them. The ergonomically optimised shaping of the joystick makes working as comfortable as possible. The desired travelling speed range can be preselected directly on the joystick. This way, control of the tractor can be apportioned precisely, especially at low speed. Driver detection takes place automatically by means of the integrated seat contact switch, without the driver having to actuate a safety lever. The joystick for the rear-mounted ripper is a new feature; this can now be adjusted in two axes and serves as a handle for the driver during the ripping process. The modern design of Liebherr’s new PR 766 offers the driver an excellent view in all directions, which makes work particularly efficient and increases safety in daily use. Edges which slope away on all sides and the all-round panoramic window ensure ideal panoramic visibility of the land, as well as the blade and rear-mounted ripper. Liebherr’s modern design, overall quality and excellent usability, of which operator-

friendliness is but one aspect, has made the brand increasingly popular in the Middle East, says Friedrich. “Liebherr has experienced positive developments and market figures indicate substantial growth in equipment sales. Dealers and subsidiaries are also seeing progress in sales and expansion. In fact, market figures since the 2009 recession show that in the Middle East, the number of Liebherr machines exported to the region has continuously increased,” he says. A huge reason behind this is Liebherr’s technology, reliability and durability, Friedrich adds. And this is one aspect in which the new PR 766 is not found wanting. The machine’s hydrostatic Liebherr travel drive omits high-wear components, such as torque converters, multi-speed gearboxes, steering clutches and service brakes. Instead, highquality and particularly reliable hydraulic pumps and hydraulic motors operate with virtually no wear. Centralised maintenance points, wideopening access flaps and engine compartment doors, as well as a tilting operator’s cab as standard, enable easy maintenance access. This is enhanced by engine compartment lighting as standard, which makes sure that daily checks can be performed quickly and efficiently, even in poor lighting conditions. The intervals for changing the hydraulic oil on the new PR 766 can be extended to up to 8,000 operating hours if the hydraulic oil

is monitored accordingly. The LiDAT fleet management system, which is supplied as a standard, provides comprehensive machine data with this stateof-the-art communication technology. This additionally improves efficiency in practical, by enabling optimised operational planning and reliable remote monitoring. The data is updated several times a day and can be conveniently called up at any time using a web browser. An automatic alarm can be set up for particularly important information, for example if the machine leaves a predefined zone or if a critical operating situation arises. The PR 766 is currently available initially in the North American market, says Liebherr. However, with the 50t dozer an important piece of kit in the Middle East, CMME feels it only remains to be seen when, rather than if, a version of the machine suitably modified for lower emission standards is seen on region’s job-sites.
