ACCESS ALL AREAS Aerial work platforms and telehandlers are not the most awe-inspiring pieces of construction machinery in the way that a huge excavator, dozer or crane is. But, like small, flexible plants can take the brunt of a storm that the stout, unbending trees cannot, they are versatile enough to keep on selling in the face of slowdowns and economic adversities. In this supplement, CMME takes a look at these two stalwarts of versatility and their major suppliers in the market. From construction and maintenance to oil & gas applications, the AWP and telehandler is being put to various uses in the region. When construction activity is on at full swing, they are needed to finish facades and ceilings. But even when there is relative lull in construction activity, as now, what has already been built always needs to be maintained. And the utility of powerede access comes to the fore. Whether maintaining amusement parks or helping to put up oil refineries and keeping them running, these powered access products are accessing all areas of the construction and machinery landscape.

t may not be as imposing as a bulldozer or an excavator, or dominating the skyline at a job site like tower cranes, mobile and lattice boom cranes, but that does not mean the aerial work platform (AWP) is any less important. There comes a stage in the construction process when the AWP comes into its own, such as when it is time to put the cladding on, or to affix the lights and other fixtures. And once the construction is finished and the building is built, while all the rest of the machines leave to move on to the next job, the AWP stays back as the most invaluable tool in maintenance. Looking beyond the construction landscape, the AWP is also indispensable to some other fields – most of which are very important to the Middle East and GCC region. Two of these that readily come to mind are oil & gas and logistics. Oil refineries, onshore and offshore oil rigs and drill sites all rely heavily on the AWP for maintenance work, and the big global brands such as Haulotte, Genie, JLG and others have made a fortune in this region from such non-construction sectors. The present economic slowdown, however, is not the ideal time to continue making a fortune for most equipment suppliers. But the utility and versatility that the AWP means that it is still soldiering on. The rationale is that what has already been built still has to be maintained – and the AWP is an indispensable tool in maintenance. Among the big-ticket projects that are continuing in the region, French powered access specialist Haulotte has cornered some prestigious customers. Haulotte
3 Market players in the aerial work platform sector agree that the two biggest trends in the GCC are booms with higher capacities and electric motors.

work platforms are helping to build the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi and the King Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Jeddah. When it comes to maintenance the beand has an important and high-visibility project in its kitty – the upkeep of the Masjid AlHaram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. With its fleet engaged in the maintenance of Islam’s holiest site, Haulotte counts this as a feather in its cap, says Arthur Danelian, managing director of Haulotte Middle East. It is no surprise that in the GCC, the UAE continues to be strong markets for his company, Danelian says. But the surprise for him is the emergence of Turkey as an outstanding market for Haulotte in recent times. “We have almost a 30% share of the AWP market in the entire Middle East, according to annual figures from the American Association of AWP manufacturers, and have retained our leadership position for almost a decade. Saudi Arabia was our biggest market in the region in 2015, but after the dramatic drop there last year, Turkey has now emerged as the largest,” Danelian says, and adds that he expects growth to come in the immediate future in the hotel construction, facilities management and shopping malls segments. Despite Saudi Arabia tapering off a little for Haulotte, Danelian still counts the Masjid Al-Haram project as one of the crowning jewels of Haulotte. And why not? The prestige and high visibility associated with having your brand service a globally iconic site is of such significance that almost all brands would love to be in Haulotte’s place. Another manufacturer involved in a project of significance is Genie, the powered access arm of Terex. Genie recently delivered three Z-60/37 DC articulating boom lifts to Dubai Parks and Resorts, one of the prime leisure destinations operators in the region. The new all-electric lifts are ideal for maintenance work at heights and are designed to be suitable for such leisure facilities, where a lot of indoor maintenance work has to be carried

out, which means that a quiet and emission-free machine is the only way to go. And, according to Nishad Abdulla, assistant fleet manager, Dubai Parks and Resorts, the machines are proving their utility. The facility would have otherwise needed to spend more money on separate diesel and electric boom lifts for outdoor and indoor maintenance had the Z-60/37 DC model not been suitable for both purposes. “Thanks to its excellent range of motion, versatile, quiet, clean performance and four-wheel drive abilities, this new Genie model is an excellent and cost-effective alternative to separate diesel- and electric-powered units. For us, the Z-60/37DC boom definitely ticks all the right boxes,” says Abdulla. Safety on top Apart from its performance and cost-utility, Genie itself puts safety as one of the top reasons why its products are favoured in the market. In the second quarter of this year, the company introduced a new safety feature recently – the Lift Guard Contact Alarm System – which is an electronic secondary guarding system
that sounds an alarm if it detects an emergency in which the operator may need help. The alarm comes as standard on most new Genie S telescopic lifts and Z articulated lifts. It can also be installed as an after-market kit within half-an-hour and is suitable for retrofitting on units manufactured from 2003 onwards. Marie Engstrom, product manager at Genie, says: “Operator safety is a paramount concern for Genie, and we have developed the new Genie Lift Guard Contact Alarm, part of the Genie line of Lift Guard secondary operator protection accessories, with this goal in mind.” Safety is an equally serious issue with Haulotte, and Danelian says: “As a European manufacturer, our machines have a high degree of safety built into them because of the regulations in our home market. We also ensure excellence in our service to our end users, which is a key factor of our success in the region. All our dealers are fully trained and certified by us at least twice a year so that they provide a very high level of service to the end user. This attention to service serves a two-pronged strategy. It not only keeps the machines running for longer but also increases safety.”
5 Construction, oil & gas and facilities management are the three core sectors that depend on the aerial work platform, say manufacturers.
Where service is concerned, American company JLG is on its game. The brand has enjoyed a long presence in the Middle East, having appointed its first dealer in the region back in the early 1980s. More recently, in 2008, it came into the region with greater force by establishing its own sales and service operation in the UAE. Enrico Marighella, JLG distribution manager for the Middle East, says: “We deliver unsurpassed training and service, because we have a responsibility to be more than a manufacturing company. We are a partner in our customers’ success.” With this philosophy, JLG has made major inroads into the oil & gas market in the Middle East, apart from the construction sector, and Marighella says: “Since we set up shop here in 2008, the growth has been in the large boom segment in these two sectors and we deliver the powerful, versatile equipment that they need.” He adds that JLG’s popular offering is the RS series, which is targeted at rental operators with its low acquisition cost. It is simple to operate and easy to service. Also popular in JLG’s stable is the self-propelled Ultra Boom, which is one of the largest of its kind in the

sector. As a self-propelled boom it is extending the range of jobs that can be done with a machine of its kind, owing to its smaller footprint which allows it to be used in confined spaces. It also enjoys a lower price point when compared to equivalent truckmounted booms, Marighella adds. Another important sector that relies on AWPs is logistics and warehousing. While automation is finding its way into the sector, a lot of logistical operations use boom and scissor lifts to stack, find and move articles in their warehouses. With this as one of the prime drivers, British earthmoving and compact machinery specialist, JCB, has made its maiden foray into the AWP sector this year. The company is already a recognised name in the telehandler segment and so is no stranger to powered access machines. Leveraging its brand equity in the telehandler and other segments, JCB entered the AWP market earlier this year with nine electric scissor lift models and announced a new JCB Access division. It plans to have 27 models in its line up by the end of the year across the scissor lift, articulated boom and telescopic boom categories, comprising nine electric and three diesel scissor lifts from 4.6m to 13.8m, five articulating booms – four diesel and one electric - from 14.9m to 24.6m, and 10 diesel telescopic booms from 20.6m to 41.6m. JCB believes the global powered access market, with annual revenues of $8bn, is in excess of 130,000 units, and plans to take a slice of the market. Richard Butler, managing director of JCB Access, says customers have been asking JCB for years for powered access products, and the move into the segment was customer-driven. “It was a logical extension; we had been busy growing our product range over the years in the construction and agriculture sectors, but customers said, ‘You should be in this sector because it has so many synergies with products you already supply,’” Butler says.

he telehandler is an immensely popular and vitally importance machine given the multiple uses it can be put to. In fact, the market credentials of several legendary equipment manufacturers have been built, and rest, on the telehandler. The prime example is JCB. The UK-based brand is the global leader in the telehandler segment and among the pioneers of the class. JCB’s Loadall is a legend in the sector and the company is celebrating the 40th year of the machine this year. Starting in 1977, JCB built its 200,000th telehandler last year, which is ample testimony to the Loadall’s popularity. There are now more than 30 models of the iconic machine, though the number of engine, transmission, boom and cab options results in over 1,000 configurations. As the Middle East’s market leader in the segment, JCB counts on on its service and periodic innovations to retain its lead, says Nayana Sharma, JCB’s marketing manager for the region. Among those innovations is the Loadall Customer Focus Centre, which JCB opened in August last year. Every telehandler JCB makes comes from pre-delivery inspection (PDI) to the CFC, where it is checked over again. “The real innovation in the CFC is the Command Centre. Every Loadall model has JCB’s LiveLink telematics system feeding information into the Command Centre. Data is also imported from JCB’s tech web service centre and from customer calls. A team collates all available information from Loadalls all over the world,” she says. “If a concern is identified, the team initiates an enquiry into the cause and if it relates to manufacturing, this can be fed back to the factory speedily. Afterwards, the Command
Centre then tracks the next wave of machines to be produced, to ensure quality is maintained to the highest standards. The system greatly improves the speed of feedback from the field, which would traditionally have taken weeks to get back to manufacturing.” Among others vying for a slice of the pie is Terex-owned Genie. “We do have some individual successes,” says Sharbel Kordahi, managing director, Middle East, at Terex Aerial Work Platforms. “We take this market very seriously and see opportunities. But we are by far not yet at our potential and there is scope for improvement.” About the challenges he says: “Endusers tend to look at telehandlers more as a construction machine than an AWP. And this is where our dealers and partners also tend to not understand exactly the specifics about telehandlers. AWP products are very low maintenance and reliable with very few breakdowns. But the telehandler is a very high wear-and-tear product. “An AWP goes up to a certain height and stays there as people work in it. There is not much action. A telehandler is continuously working, continuously running from here to there, lifting loads, transporting material. Sometimes our

dealers or customers get a little mixed up, in the sense that they say, ‘our Genie boom and is working for the past five years without any problem but our Genie telehandler needed work twice last year’. But that’s the specifics of the telehandler. It’s a high wear and tear product that will require attention.” Genie’s stumbling block in telehandlers in the GCC is, paradoxically, the success and quality of its AWPs. “When you take a Genie telehandler everybody wants it to work like a Genie AWP, which it won’t, as it’s a different, though related, machne, with its own dynamics,” Kordahi explains. Whatever the market perception, Kordahi adds that sales are not doing badly as the telehandler continues to be popular despite market slowdowns. For Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East and Africa for Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment the owners of Bobcat - the reason for the telehandler’s popularity is clear. “It is the very design of the machine. A telehandler has multiple uses on a job-site at various stages of the build. It is involved in a variety of tasks and can

provide multiple uses – from lifting, dumping and carrying to handling materials and powered access,” he says. Bobcat has a popular range of rigid frame telehandlers in the region. These push operational boundaries upward, including greater stability when operating on wheels only, without stabilisers extended. Another major player in the telehandler segment, Caterpillar, offers the compact TH255C, with a load capacity of 2.5t and a maximum lift height of 5.6m, powered by a hydrostatic drive. Cat also has two larger machines in its line-up – the TH414C GC and TH417C GC. With maximum lift heights of 13.85m and 17m respectively, the GC machines are designed for the requirements of rental
fleets with low operating costs, simple maintenance, reliability, durability and ease of operation, Cat says. Both telehandlers use a 3.6-litre engine with output of 74kW, coupled with a 3F/3R powershift transmission. They feature permanent four-wheel drive and use a limited-slip differential in the front axle to ensure traction over rough terrain. Dual-axle braking via large oil-immersed disc brakes provides the stopping power, and the front brakes also serve as the parking brake, ensuring reliability compared to an external, exposed parking brake. Safety is a major concern for telehandler operation. One concern is when a machine is not correctly aligned with an opening, which may only become evident once the boom is extended. Telehandler producer Merlo has a solution for this, with many of its machines equipped with an integral side-shift mechanism that allows the boom to move laterally. Merlo’s dynamic load control (CDC) system guarantees front longitudinal stability of telehandlers under both static and dynamic conditions. In 2015, it claimed a world first: a traversal stability system (TSS), which measures side stability and calculates the inclines a machine can operate on stably. Matteo Benedetto, director, Marketing at Merlo, says: “Lateral stability is extremely important, particularly for operating on uneven terrain. Lateral overturning of machinery is one of the main causes of death, if not the main, in the sector.” American powered access specialist JLG also has a range of telehandlers. Its 3614RS and 4017RS models, aimed at the rental market – with the RS in the names standing for ‘rental series’ or ‘spec’ – were developed working closely with rental companies. Features include simplified service with access to the external telescope cylinder and electronics placed outside rather than inside the boom. JLGs are also built with Dana axles and transmissions, and Deutz engines and use booms with a four-plate box design.

anlift Group is a sales and rental company established in 2007 and headquartered in Dubai. Over the past decade, it has steadily grown to become a leading supplier of aerial work platforms (AWP), operating from five depots across the Middle East and Asia and offering products from major American and European manufacturers such as JLG, Genie and Teupen. The Manlift fleet consists of more than 2,200 latemodel ISO-certified AWPs of more than 100 different types, ranging from self-propelled boom lifts with working heights up to 58m, and battery and bi-energy powered access platforms, to spiders, scissor lifts and low-level access platforms.
From its five depots, the company is able to deploy its equipment throughout the region. The reach of the Manlift Group is broad in another sense, extending across a range of industries, serving clients in the construction, facilities management, logistics, oil & gas, public transport and events sectors. Manlift is currently active on a number of fronts, and nowhere is this more evident than in its approach to professionalism and especially safety on the job, to ensure the best customer experience. This is what the company calls the Manlift
Way. The Manlift Way is all about continuous improvement and customer service. “A great opportunity for our customers to familiarise themselves with the Manlift Way is to take advantage of a guided tour during the annual Open House held at the Manlift Yard situated in Dubai Investment Park 2. Customers gain a profound understanding of exactly what we mean when we say we are committed to delivering the best customer experience in any industry,” says Mediha Diyaboglu, regional marketing
11 and communications manager at Manlift. “For example, by implementing lean principles in our operations, Manlift has made significant improvements on essential quality and service parameters, such as machine availability, safety, ontime machine delivery, fast pickup, high machine uptime and invoice accuracy. Furthermore, Manlift is able to constantly monitor and improve key performance indicators across all of its depots, and in so doing, we are continuously improving service levels and fulfilling our promise to deliver the best customer experience,” she adds. This year is a special one for Manlift, not only because it is celebrating 10 years in business, but also because it was honoured during this year’s International Awards for Power Access (IAPA) Summit – as IPAF Training Centre of the Year – by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).
Safety through operator training is a key focus area for Dubaibased rental operator, Manlift Group, with two certified training centres in the GCC region.
“That commitment to quality training is reflected in the resources we’ve made available: our certified training centre in our home base in the UAE, an additional IPAFaccredited training centre in India, and the first bilingual senior instructor (English and Hindi) working out of Qatar,” Diyaboglu explains. Manlift has previously sponsored the IPAF Middle East Convention, which seeks to cultivate safe work at height, and is doing so again this year. Manlift’s regional Safety, Training & Compliance manager serves as the IPAF regional chairperson. Beyond that, Manlift works closely with the UAE Ministry of Labour and its occupational health and safety team to promote safety awareness and safety education in government departments and across the UAE. In the final analysis, what stands out is that Manlift provides the highest standards in safety and quality when working at height, says the company.

ver since 1969, when founder John Landis Grove started JLG industries in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania in the US, the company has been meeting some of the highest challenges in the sphere of aerial access platforms, earning the confidence and trust of customers through quality and innovation. Grove had earlier co-founded a successful crane manufacturing company, and after he left became aware of the pressing need for a machine that could safely and quickly lift workers into the air to perform construction and maintenance functions. Setting out to resolve this growing concern in the construction industry, Grove focused his energy by starting JLG. With a crew of just 20 workers and a small metal fabrication shop, the first JLG aerial work platform (AWP) was sold in 1970. By the time Grove died in 2003, he had created a legacy in the form of a company that continues to expand globally, developing innovative products and reaching out to help customers to be more productive and work more safely. Today, JLG produces a range of AWPs and telehandlers designed to fit the requirements of end users as well as of rental company customers, who are some of its biggest buyers. The company says its customers are its greatest priority and remains steadfast in its commitment to understanding their challenges. To do this, it listens to feedback on product performance, reliability and service costs, using this information to develop new models and improve existing ones. Several of its products demonstrate this. JLG’s new 3614RS and 4017RS telehandlers, aimed at the rental market – with the RS in the names standing for ‘rental series’ or ‘spec’ – were developed as a result of working closely with rental companies.
As one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of access equipment, JLG products and personnel can be found all over the globe, going above and beyond to support customers – and the Middle East is no exception. The company appointed its first dealer in the region back in the early 1980s, and in 2008 JLG established its own sales and service operation in the UAE. According to Enrico Marighella, JLG’s Dubai-based distribution manager for the Middle East, the company currently has around 10 direct employees, in addition to a third-party distribution network appointed to cover each Gulf country. “Since we set up shop here in 2008, the growth has been in the large boom segment, driven by demand from the construction and oil & gas sectors,” Marighella said. “We deliver the powerful, versatile equipment that they need, along with unsurpassed training and service, because we have a responsibility to be more than a manufacturing company. We are a partner in our customers’ success, reaching out worldwide to enable performance, boost productivity, ensure uptime and support forward progress.” JLG provides world-class quality,

service and delivery to distributors and customers through teamwork and dedication, Marighella explains. The results of this philosophy are easy to see. Compared to 2015, the company saw slight growth last year, while in terms of territories in the region, Qatar and the UAE performed best. What gives JLG products the edge over the competition is the competitive advantage it gives owners and users in the field. “Low cost of ownership and superior return on investment are some of the areas where we hold an advantage over the competition,” Marighella says. “We constantly invest in new products and technologies. Once a customer has purchased a JLG, it’s our ability to support products in the field through focused service and parts support that sets us apart. When allied with our market-leading diagnostics programmes, this is where clients see an immediate advantage.” JLG’s telehandlers, for example, have features catering specifically to the Europe, Africa, Middle East (EAME) market, such as straightforward service and maintenance requirements,
desirable in any fleet. Other features include cabs that can be cleaned by a pressure-washer before the next job and simplified service with access to the external telescope cylinder and electronics placed outside rather than inside the boom. A single compensation lift cylinder requires less service and has fewer leak points, and JLG’s telehandlers are also built with Dana axles and transmissions as well as Deutz engines. The boom technology uses a fourplate box design, further contributing to the machine’s reliability. Transportability is also high, though Marighella notes that this is less important in the Middle East, since on-road weight restrictions are more lenient than in Europe. For rental companies and end users here, the main attractions of JLG’s machines, such as the RS series, is that they are easier to service and easier to operate, and have a lower acquisition cost. The Ultra Boom, one of the largest self-propelled booms in the industry, is another example of a machine that is literally extending the range of jobs that can be completed with
15
a self-propelled boom. According to Marighella, the machine is being used in some instances to replace truckmounted access platforms. A key advantage of a boom lift over a truck-mounted option (apart from the lower price) is that it has a much smaller footprint, meaning self-propelled booms can be used on job-sites such as refineries and other

confined spaces. “Manoeuvrability, and the potential of doing business inside such a complex, is huge compared with a truck-mounted lift.” Telematics is also another area where JLG has traditionally had an edge over the competition. “In telematics, JLG is probably the reference for all other manufacturers. We have used the
Advanced Design Electronics (ADE) system extensively for more than a decade on our engine-powered units,” Marighella says. He explains that telematics bring many added benefits, not only for diagnostics and service, but even for the operator, who can personalise and customise every single movement. There is also access to full information on machine utilisation and, in case of a fault with a machine, the system has a record of every single movement. With these inherent advantages, JLG has made the development of new territories its top priority for 2017, closely followed by increased marketing of its telehandler family of products. “Capital flow needs to improve if our client base wants to invest in new products and services,” Marighella says. “We will continue our regional growth programme, while supporting our client base to ensure they get the best bang for their buck from JLG.”

ounded in 2009, Safelift offers an extensive fleet of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) for the rental market and operates on the paradigm of putting safety at the top of its priorities. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, with a second location in Dubai, it was founded by managing director and owner Wayne Taylor. Finding promise in the UAE’s powered access market, yet spotting an opportunity to provide a better class of service to meet clients’ requirements, he has guided Safelift in the eight years since the company started to a position where it is a well-recognised name in the market. Speaking about Safelift’s journey so far, Taylor says: “Our aim was always to provide unprecedented levels of service in all areas of MEWP supply. Right from the beginning, our motto has been ‘Safe Working at Height’, which was a cornerstone on which our company is built, and it remains ingrained in our entire team today, be it engineering, operations or sales We are continually expanding our fleet to meet our clients’ requirements and have plans to commence operations in other GCC locations in the future.” Safelift’s rental fleet consists of all major brands, including JLG, Genie, Niftylift and Skyjack. Elaborating on the composition of the fleet, Taylor says: “Our boom lift fleet
comprises articulated and telescopic booms with working heights ranging from 12m to 43m. In terms of power options, we have diesel and electric machines, as well as bi-fuel ones, powered by diesel and electric motors. “Complementing our booms is a rental fleet of scissor lifts, with working heights ranging from 7.6m to 20m and power options of electric or diesel.” Pointing out the adherence to strict standards, Taylor explains that all of Safelift’s rental machines are supplied with a valid third-party inspection certificate and the company can accommodate other safety requirements to clients’ specifications or according to the demands of the job-site – such as provision of Chalwyn valves and spark arrestors. “All Safelift locations offer rental operations along with full IPAF and PASMA certified training facilities,” Taylor adds, alluding to how safety is
central to the company’s operations. This uncompromising approach has led the company to become a certified ISO 9001 organisation, Taylor points out, which speaks volumes about its meticulous operations and dedication to quality processes. And Safelift is not resting on its laurels. Speaking about the future, Taylor says: “Recently, through our continuous approach to improving machine reliability in such a harsh environment as we have in this region, Safelift has become the UAE dealer/ distributer of a brand-new product developed in the UK, called Fuel Active. “Used in the fuel supply for diesel engined machinery, it’s a revolutionary fuel pick-up unit utilising a floating pick-up pipe to draw fuel from the cleaner upper level of fuel. This leaves the water and sediment behind untouched and prevents it from being drawn into the fuel delivery system.”
We have been attending the Big Project ME Awards for a number of years now and this is certainly one of the industry’s leading events. The Big Project ME Awards commends the best of the region’s construction and building industry and we truly appreciate being recognised as one of the top performing contractors in the Middle East.

nown for its compact loaders, Bobcat has a popular range of telehandlers and has already celebrated the production of its 20,000th telehandler at its Pontchâteau plant in France in 2014. Given the wide range of functions that a telehandler can perform, there’s a natural fit with Bobcat’s compact loader range, described as a Swiss Army knife of a construction site. Its telehandler offering was bolstered with the new versions of Bobcat’s two largest rigid frame telescopic handlers, the T40140 (14 metres) and T40180 (18m) and was further enhanced at Bauma 2016. Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, the owners of Bobcat, one of the biggest telehandler makers on the market, explains why: “Multi-purpose machines are always an asset, and telehandlers bring important versatility to job-sites, whether being used to move construction materials or waste, or engaged in the build by placing construction elements onto a building. New launches and innovations are boosting customer options, increasing productivity with new features while concentrating on safety.” Bobcat has also launched a standard three year warranty for the complete range of its rigid telehandlers. It is available as standard in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region on all the models in the Bobcat telehandler range, from the T2250 5m telehandler to the top-ofthe-range T40180 18m model.

Equipped with suitable attachments, of which Bobcat has a wide range, the company’s telehandlers can perform a huge variety of tasks.
Rhayem says that the new models have been well received by the market, with high sales volumes. “Our dealers are more than ever very committed to the telehandler business, and the machines sold and delivered to their customers have provided high performance and satisfaction for the end users.” Customers are mainly working in construction, building and rental, says Rhayem, with telehandlers used for building houses, villas, flats and offices. The landscaping and industrial sectors are also heavy users. “Landscaping is considered as the main growth sector after construction in the GCC. Rental follows closely after landscaping. The industrial segment is another growing sector for telehandlers.” Bobcat’s telehandlers are equipped with a standard patented side-shift function, allowing the load to be moved 700mm on either side. The side-shift movement occurs via a cylinder in the side-shift carriage, which goes between the frame at the top of the boom and the attachment such as pallet forks. New range Backed by a three year warranty as standard, a new range of rigid frame telehandlers has been launched by Bobcat for the construction and rental industries. Manufactured at the company’s plant at Pontchâteau in France, Bobcat now offers a choice of 11 new telehandler models for the construction/rental markets covering maximum lifting capacities between 2.6t and 4.1t with lifting heights from 6-18m. They are designated using a new naming system showing lifting capacity/ lifting height performance at a glance. The TL26.60 and TL30.60 are compact telescopic loaders. The TL35.70, T35.105, T35.105L and T36.120SL are middle lift
telehandlers while the T35.130S and T35.140S are rental industry-oriented telehandlers. The high lift models are named T35.130SLP, T41.140SLP and T40.180SLP. “The new generation telehandlers are available in versions for markets with nonregulated emissions such as the Middle East and Africa, where high performance is ensured by Perkins Stage IIIA/Tier 3 diesel engines. The engines provide plenty of power and torque even in the most difficult ground conditions,” says Rhayem. “These new generation telehandlers also incorporate several new features such as an automatic parking brake with an intuitive operation similar to those used in the automotive industry, providing greater safety and control. As well as the automatic parking brake, the advanced features include an optional air dual suspension seat, an optional auto fan inversion, a rotating beacon/back-up alarm as standard and cushion retract on the three TL models. “Bobcat always prioritises operator comfort and the seats in these new telehandlers are comfortable mechanical
or air suspension seats. The operator is provided with an ergonomic array of machine controls all within easy reach.” Controls include a forward/reverse (FNR) button on the joystick; a digital display; an adjustable steering wheel and an integrated airflow solution, he adds. The TL26.60 and TL30.60 are available with two different overall machine heights with a cab which can be mounted in two different ways – in a low position that results in the very low 2.1m height or a higher position to optimise visibility. On the TL35.70 there is an improved load chart providing an additional 500kg of lifting capacity at the maximum lifting height of 6.97m. “There are also a number of tried and tested smart operating features still offered as standard,” Rhayem adds. These include the speed management system, which allows the travel speed to be adjusted independently of the engine speed; and the smart handling system, which adjusts the speed of the boom movements in lifting, telescoping and tilting operations, depending on the type of work being carried out, he explains.

solid foundation, they say, is the basis for anything good. This is a truism in life as much as in industry – and equally so in the construction equipment industry. A solid piece of equipment needs a solid base. In the case of machinery, this is usually its tyres. Enter Traxter, a high-performance tyre brand from Trident International FZE. The company, with bases in Pune, India and Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, is well aware of the importance of highquality tyres in the overall performance of a machine – an awareness that has led it to develop products that become integral parts of any equipment and contribute immensely to its overall performance. “Tyres being the only connect between a vehicle and the terrain, it is critical to ensure that they are reliable, safe and performance-worthy any time and every time. This is of even greater importance when tyres are used on construction equipment such as aerial work platforms, boom lifts, telehandlers, etc,” says Suprit Shah, Trident’s spokesperson at its Ras Al Khaimah premises. With this importance in mind, Trident set about improving the aerial work platform (AWP) tyre, rethinking its manufacturing process and the components that go into it. “Currently, most AWP tyres are made puncture-proof by a process called foam filling, which involves injecting the pneumatic tyres with liquid polyurethane elastomers that cure into a synthetic rubber. While this prevents punctures, they are still prone to damage due to the operating conditions the machines are used in,” says Shah. He adds that AWP users wanted more from their tyres in terms of service life and performance, while retaining the convenience of being puncture-proof. So Trident listened to what its customers had to say and then set about creating the product that would serve them best. Explaining the process, Shah says: “Based on feedback from our customers, who were seeking puncture-proof tyres and a long life, Trident has developed a complete range of Traxter-branded low-profile, solid tyres especially designed for all types of elevated work platforms, ranging from 6m rough terrain scissors to 45m boom lifts.”
“Besides being 100% puncture-proof, Traxter solid tyres offer users several additional advantages over foam-filled pneumatics at no additional cost. Solid tyres have high damage resistance and a deeper tread depth, resulting in better grip and longer service life. The lower sidewall flex eliminates the bouncy ride of foam-filled tyres.” Besides its durability and superior performance, there is also another advantage in terms of time saved, Shah says. “Unlike foam filling, which has a turnaround of anywhere between six to eight days, Traxter solid tyres can be immediately and easily fitted on-site, as these are supplied as ready-to-fit
assemblies. This reduces downtime, total cost of ownership (TCO) and cost per hour (CPH).” The Traxter industrial tyres last three to five times as long as equivalent foam-filled tyres, says Shah, and Trident offers them for leading AWP brands such as Haulotte, Genie, JLG, Skyjack and Snorkel. In the final analysis, Traxter tyres are 100% puncture-proof with high damage resistance, offer a stable ride and superior grip with their low-profile deep treads and tough compounds, and save on downtime with an easy on-site installation process, while being extremely competitive on price.

or Sharbel Kordahi, managing director for the Middle East at Terex Aerial Work Platforms, these are neither the best nor worst of times. While admitting that the present is not like the heyday of the construction machinery industry circa 2014-15, he feels there is still room to be positive. And with reason. Not only have Terex’s Genie aerial work platforms (AWP) been selected by Dubai Parks and Resorts for their facilities maintenance fleet, but the company has also supplied a huge order of 300-plus machines to rental biggie Rapid Access, solely for Middle Eastern operations. Add to this Genie’s recent move to elevate its long-term dealer in the UAE – MH Al Mahroos Trading Est (Al Mahroos) – from being merely a Genie dealer to its first fully-authorised service provider (ASP), and you get a sense of the general sense of cautious optimism that Genie is feeling at the moment. “I have to admit that our business now is not what it was in 201415, but what it is now is also nothing to complain about,” Kordahi tells CMME in an exclusive interview. “Like others in the market, the recent slide in Saudi Arabia has also affected Genie. However, that doesn’t mean the region as a whole has completely taken a dip. We see a lot of activities in Kuwait, for example, while in the UAE all our customers and rental companies are busy.” This activity in the UAE is one of the reasons behind elevating Al Mahroos to the full ASP status, he adds, as there has been an increase in demand for both Genie products and maintenance contracts in the UAE. In addition to selling Genie products UAEwide, Al Mahroos will also provide service to customers in Dubai and the UAE’s Northern Emirates. Its new ASP responsibilities will be extended to cover the entire UAE in the months to come. With its full ASP status, Al Mahroos will become part of the

Genie Service Solutions network – a group of elite Genie dealers meeting a certain standard that enables them to be qualified by the manufacturer to offer the full range of its certified authorised after-sales service. “We introduced the Genie Service Solutions in Europe around four years ago and wanted to bring it here, so Al Mahroos became an extension of our service provision into this market,” Kordahi says. “We have a very good relationship with Al Mahroos and with its experience in Genie products and of the local market, it has precisely the right profile and skills to support Genie customers and owners of Genie fleets in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Al Mahroos now provides more technically skilled hands to respond rapidly and efficiently, with a level of service tailored to customers’ needs.” Coming back to the Genie brand in particular, Kordahi says it graph in the region has been moving consistently upwards for a long time now. “The real recession here was around 2008 and 2009,” he says. “We came out

of that crisis in 2010 and started growing gradually from 2011. It has been a constant upswing all the way up to 2015, with fantastic growth. Then there was a mini dip, of course, but that’s purely coming out of the oil price and the crisis that happened in Saudi Arabia. We still enjoy a fantastic market share in the Middle East. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that we have the lion’s share of the region’s powered access market.” The business is cyclical, he adds, and ups and downs are normal. “Don’t let anyone fool you into believing that we always have heydays. We go into different cycles in our business. When the project pipeline gets affected, our market dips. But unlike the heavy equipment sector, we do not see a massive dip. The projects that are still going on, instead of now buying machines, they go out for renting. This brings the rental
companies into the picture and they continue to buy from us, so we go into a rental cycle. This means that if we go into a dip, it’s not so steep and our market is always first into recession and the first out of it as well.” As a provider of equipment to rental fleets, Genie has an old and successful worldwide relationship with global rental fleet heavyweight Rapid Access, which also extends to the region. And now that relationships has received a new fillip in the GCC with the rental company going in for a huge new Genie order comprising 324 units, Kordahi informs. (See box) The reason behind Genie’s success, Kordahi reveals, is its overall value proposition. “I think the differentiator in this part of the world is relationships. We don’t go in just with the price, we sell on a Genie value proposition. Apart from performance, that includes finance, service and return on investment, which rental companies specifically look at. Our equipment has a very high return on investment, so if you decide to sell them after a certain period of time you get very high ROI, owing to high resale values.” Genie’s traditionally high ROI has of course made it a popular choice for rental operators worldwide, but the GCC is a unique market where rental is not as popular as it is globally. “Globally, the powered access business is usually a direct business to rental companies. In the GCC, however, we have a split of almost 50/50 between rental companies and dealers or end users,” Kordahi explains. “The penetration of rental companies is growing here, but the GCC still has a lot of end users that buy equipment. A lot of big construction companies still like to own their own equipment. We have strong end users here, and I don’t think that is going to change in the foreseeable future, though rental will grow side by side.”

SHINING IN SAUDI
Haulotte’s aerial work platforms Have carved a nicHe for tHemselves in saudi arabia, bagging projects in botH tHe kingdom’s oil & gas sector and its prestigious religious sites
T
he oil & gas sector has traditionally employed aerial work platforms (AWP) for a variety of functions, from installation to maintenance, and a recent example can be found in Saudi Arabia, where AWPs from French powered access specialist, Haulotte, are hard at work at a project in the sector. Saudi Aramco’s new Jazan Refinery and Terminal project is one of the latest projects where Haulotte has supplied its articulated and telescopic big booms. It had earlier been chosen to supply a fleet of machines for maintenance work at the Masjid Al Haram in Makkah, Islam’s holiest site, and the two sites represent big and prestigious projects for Haulotte in the Kingdom. Arthur Danelian, managing director of Haulotte Middle East, says the Haulotte booms delivered to the refinery project are designed with the latest technology and the highest level of safety features, apt for a refinery such as Jazan, which will be a grassroots facility with an anticipated capacity of up to 400,000 barrels per day (BPD) of crude oil. The most used models at the site are the Haulotte articulated boom lift HA41PX-NT and HA41RTJ PRO, and the Haulotte telescopic boom lift HT43RTJ PRO. The HA41 models have an outreach of 19.80m and the best lifting speed in the market at less than 40 seconds, which reduces time and increases productivity. The fleet at Jazan includes Haulotte’s recently-launched HT28RTJ PRO, equipped with the innovative STOP Emission System, which is also working on the site. The STOP system automatically puts the machine in stand-by after an extended period of inactivity. “These telescopic booms offer unparalleled flexibility

and precision, giving users greater confidence and letting them reach the desired work area quickly and safely,” says Danelian. Saudi Arabia, through Saudi Aramco, selected the city of Jazan on the southern coast of the Red Sea to spend $27bn in capital expenditure to create the totally greenfield Jazan Economic City (JEC), part of a strategy to nurture non-oil-based industries, expand the Kingdom’s existing industries to serve domestic needs and rejuvenate the Jazan region by providing employment opportunities. The centrepiece of the development is the Jazan Refinery, which will produce 80,000bpd of gasoline, 250,000bpd of ultra-low sulphur diesel and over one million tons per year of benzene and paraxylene products. The Jazan Refinery complex will also be equipped with a state-ofthe-art port and a 4GW power plant that will make the refinery entirely self-sufficient and provide power to locally owned manufacturing and service companies coming up downstream. “As per Saudi Aramco’s request, all the machines were equipped with a secondary guarding system – the HAULOTTE ACTIV’ Shield Bar 2.0 – which offers additional protection,
shielding users from any risk of crushing without compromising productivity,” Danelian explains. “It also preserves the best working envelope, which was utilised accurately to build the complex shape of the steel structure.” Haulotte’s system alerts the operator to potential entrapment situations and is unique in that it features the manufacturer’s innovative Safety Gap, which can protect the operator from full entrapment and potentially allow them to get out of danger. Following an alert, only reverse and lowering movements are permitted, allowing the possibly panicked operator to get out of trouble without making the situation worse, Danelian explains. “And after being triggered, the system is easy to reset and reactivate from the basket, which means there is no machine downtime. This evolution guarantees better ergonomics, enhanced robustness and simpler system, perfectly integrated into the upper control box cover.” While safety is a core concern for Haulotte, the French powerhouse is also meticulous about performance. One of the ways it ensures this is by customising its machines to the demands of the target market and its peculiar conditions, whether

environmental, climatic or workrelated. Danelian explains that Hualotte’s machines sold in the Middle East and GCC region are also adapted to suit the work environment of the region, especially the extreme temperatures and the abrasive sand. This sort of adaptation to local conditions is also something the company does when selling machines to colder regions of the world. Another project of great significance that Haulotte machines are working on in Saudi Arabia is in the maintenance of the Holy Mosque in Makkah – the Masjid AlHaram, which is the holiest site of Islam. A fleet of Haulotte electric products is helping to keep the revered place of worship in the best order possible as part of the maintenance team. Provided by the Roots Group Arabia (RGA), Haulotte’s dealer in KSA, the machines were chosen by the General Presidency of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque for the prestigious project to serve the Holy Mosque and its piazzas, as they best suit the nature of the work in the vicinity. The Masjid Al-Haram is the largest mosque in the world and receives thousands of pilgrims on a daily basis. Despite the rising number of pilgrims every year, the authorities in KSA successfully provide the best services to visitors. The cleaning doesn’t stop despite the huge

crowds of visitors around the clock, especially during Ramadan and the Hajj season. With the Haulotte machines, workers are able to perform their tasks efficiently and quietly without affecting pilgrims. Among the machines in action on the site are Haulotte’s Star 10, Compact 8 and Compact 14. The Star 10 can drive at full speed with its jib fully elevated. With its high accessibility, it finds heavy use in
cleaning the entrances to the Holy Mosque, bridges, minarets, facades and columns, which are washed, cleaned, disinfected and pestcontrolled using sprays. The Star 10’s updated AC motors allow smooth and progressive driving movements for optimal agility, and the operator also feels safe and comfortable while manoeuvring thanks to its precise control. The General Presidency directs the polishing of the doors of the Kaaba, the Maqam Ibrahim, the lanterns, the gates and the gold-coated items, in addition to the dividers inside the Holy Mosque throughout its piazzas, by using Haulotte’s COMPACT 8, which is best suited to flat slab applications and drivable at full height and rollout extension (0.92m) for maximum productivity. Haulotte’s range of compact scissors are used by the cleaning and maintenance staff to perfume various parts of the Holy Mosque every day with fine types of oud and rose fragrances. And one of the biggest tasks in the project for Haulotte is the annual changing of the cover of the Kaaba in an impressive ceremony. For this monumental occasion, the machine of choice for three years in a row now is the Haulotte Compact 14, which is an electric scissor lift weighing 3.1t, with a length and width of 2.74m and 1.2m respectively, and offers a working height of 14m.
