A Message from Komatsu

Prepare for maximum production Dear Valued Customer:

This year looks like another good one for construction. Industry economists and experts seem to agree that there will be growth overall, and the supply chain issues plaguing material acquisitions and driving up costs will ease in the latter half of 2022. They also believe that’s when the impacts of the new infrastructure bill, which Congress passed in late 2021, will begin to take effect. In this issue, we offer advice on how to prepare your equipment and personnel for the upcoming busy season, so your company is ready for maximum production. It is important to thoroughly inspect your equipment and replace any damaged parts before your schedule heats up.

Plus, check out the new JMHB-V breaker series that is compatible with Komatsu PC210 to PC490 excavators. The breaker series helps customers achieve excellent impact energy and performance on tough tasks such as rock breaking and concrete demolition.

A Salute to a Komatsu Customer

Diamond Materials LLC utilizes technology throughout its fleet to take on large projects in the Newport, Del., area

R

Richard Pierson Jr. and his brother, Michael, were born into the construction industry and never looked back. After working at their father’s construction company for several years, they partnered up to run their own firm.

“Growing up, I didn’t have a sandbox with toys; I had the real deal,” stated Pierson Jr. “My sandbox was my family’s 300-acre farm. I learned to operate machines and eventually turned that experience into a successful business with my brother.”

In 2000, they purchased Diamond Materials LLC, and together they have steadily grown the company into a $140 million annual contract business with 450 employees. Based in Newport, Del., the firm completes a wide range of projects across the public, private and commercial sectors. “We take on everything from major highway rebuilds to mass grading large tracts of land,” said Pierson Jr. “We have two hot mix plants and are adding a third to increase our paving capabilities. Over the last 20 years, Diamond Materials has established itself as one of the premier heavy highway and site development contractors in the tri-state area. Our culture coupled with our unwavering attention to

safety, quality and detail — with the use of leading-edge technology and sophisticated machinery — gives us a unique ability to provide our customers with superior end results.”

Technology pivotal to success

While attending CONEXPO in the early 2000s, Pierson Jr. made a point to visit booths showing how GPS technology could impact heavy equipment machinery production and construction job sites. He recognized the value of the technology and introduced it to Diamond Materials’ fleet. Today, 100% of the company's machinery utilizes GPS technology.

“The GPS equipment saves us at least 30% in labor costs,” noted Pierson Jr. “We’ve virtually eliminated staking out a job site because the operator is able to view the plan at any time from inside the cab and know exactly where they are. I’m able to take the same five guys and generate the same amount of production in one day that would have previously taken us three days. “GPS has also impacted our training,” continued Pierson Jr. “Through our two-year apprenticeship program, we’re able to train new operators to a standard that would have previously taken seven years.”

To help maximize productivity, Pierson Jr. prefers Komatsu’s intelligent Machine Control (iMC) dozers and excavators equipped with integrated GPS technology.

“Our operators feel more comfortable and confident operating the Komatsu machines,” said Pierson Jr. “They’re accurate and operator-friendly because everything is integrated and doesn’t require poles or masts. Compared to competitive machines, our Komatsu dozers and excavators are among our most productive equipment.”

At Diamond Materials’ Black Creek project, the firm demolished an existing 600,000-square-foot structure to make way for two speculative buildings. The 11-month job involves moving 280,000 yards of dirt, installing all utilities, taking the site to finish grade, and completing all curbing and paving. The firm relies on Komatsu’s iMC equipment to stay on schedule.

4

“Due to weather last winter, we were two months behind schedule,” noted Pierson Jr.

An operator cuts to grade using a Komatsu D51PXi-24 dozer at Diamond Materials’ Black Creek job site. “Operating the D51 is like running a small dozer, but you’re able to see the blade and have a lot more power,” said owner Richard Pierson Jr. “They’re well-balanced and very productive for us.”

“Because of our operators and the Komatsu equipment, we’re not only back on schedule, but have started working ahead of schedule. The Komatsu machines give us the confidence to know that we only have to do something one time, and it will be done the right way.”

The pond drainage system for the project presented a particularly challenging layout. The firm paired its Komatsu PC360LCi-11 excavator and D61PXi-24 dozer to complete the job.

“We had to create two teardrop-shaped ponds side by side with safety benches, ledges and a stone ring around the top,” explained Pierson Jr. “We carved and dug out the entire structure using the 360i while the D61i completed the more intricate grading sections. By pairing the two machines together, we only had to touch the material once, which was a huge cost savings.” Pierson Jr. also appreciates the GPS capabilities of the Komatsu PC210LCi-11 excavator. “We use the 210 excavator to place underdrain on some of the state highway jobs. We can build a model for the underdrain trench and cut straight to grade with the 210 without over- or underdigging. We also use the 210 to cut trenches for our curb machine. Diamond Materials’ fleet of Komatsu iMC machines includes dozers ranging from the D51PXi to the D61PXi and excavators ranging from the PC210LCi to the PC360LCi. To find the right Komatsu machines, the firm works closely with Komatsu and sales representative Barry Talley.

“Our support from our Komatsu sales rep has been excellent,” stated Pierson Jr. “Barry goes out of his way to make sure we’re taken care of. It’s important to partner with people like Barry because he understands our business and makes sure we have the right machines.”

Pierson Jr. notes the quality support from Komatsu as well. “Out of all of the manufacturers that we work with, the product and parts support from Komatsu has been top of the line. They answer the phone when we call and help maximize our machines’ uptime.”

Next generation

Pierson Jr. enjoyed operating equipment when he was growing up, and he hopes his kids will inherit his passion. “My two sons are 10 and 15. I’m raising them the same way I was raised. Hopefully they find the same love for moving dirt as I did and want to take over this company someday.” Diamond Materials is well-positioned to be around when Pierson Jr.’s sons are old enough to join the workforce.

Diamond Materials’ Black Creek project involved creating two teardrop-shaped drainage ponds.

“We have a steady backlog of contracts through 2023,” stated Pierson Jr. “We’ve grown about 10% over the last five years. We have clients that we’ve built relationships with who trust us to do their work. The future looks bright for the company.” ■

Combining forces transforms Wollam Construction Company Inc. into multifaceted turnkey service provider

S Matt Wollam, president

Troy Johnson, vice president

Several years ago, Matt Wollam and Troy Johnson were working beside each other on various projects — but were employed by different companies. Matt was part of his family business, Wollam Construction Company Inc. His father Guy started the company in 1986, with just a pickup truck. Troy was with another contractor. “At that point, Wollam Construction was mainly doing concrete, steel erection and mechanical piping,” recalled Troy. “Sometimes there were heavy civil elements, although it was subcontracted. The company I worked for did that, and we would often be on the same sites as Wollam. A good relationship developed, and we saw an opportunity to bring our experience together.”

Troy joined Wollam Construction in 2015 as a project manager and has since been promoted to vice president. Matt, who worked as a laborer for the company during high school and returned in 2004 after graduating from college, is now president. Guy is the chairman of the business. Based in Draper, Utah, Wollam Construction’s services now include design/build, heavy civil, underground and process piping, concrete, structural steel, mechanical equipment installation, reclamation, and demolition. Typically, crews perform most, if not all, of those for a single endeavor. “When I became full time, we had close to a dozen employees, and we grew fairly steadily

for the decade after,” recalled Matt. “The timing for Troy to come on board was perfect. We were looking for ways to strengthen the company and make it better. Troy’s expertise in heavy civil has certainly done that. We had offered turnkey packages for quite some time; however, with him in the fold, we developed the ability to self-perform everything and better control scheduling without worrying about subcontractor availability.”

Wollam Construction now completes some of the largest projects in the Intermountain West, primarily in the mining, industrial, agricultural, public works, energy, and oil and gas sectors. Beyond Utah, it has completed projects in Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. In addition to heavy civil work, the firm constructs pre-engineered buildings. With approximately 250 staff members, Wollam Construction has diversified over the past several years. In addition to earthwork and other assignments in some of the area’s biggest mines—a mainstay for the firm the past several years—it has branched out into Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) projects that include road reconstruction and bridgework.

“We offer earthwork full site packages, including underground utilities,” said Troy. “In some instances, we are also providing concrete foundation work, steel erection, building cladding, roofing and setting process equipment for piping. Our projects fall into several categories, including municipal and mining. We try to approach each the same way, with safety in the forefront, followed by delivering customer satisfaction. Our specialty is working in mining and industrial settings with the opportunity to look at certain UDOT and municipal jobs.” Matt added that the company does 50 to 60 projects annually with 85% to 90% of its work with repeat customers.

“We have many long-term customers, and I believe the reason for that is we provide quality work done on time and on budget,” he said. “During the past few years, we have focused on finding more opportunities and additional clients. Now, we are turning our attention toward

retaining the excellent staff we have built by creating a unique company culture that shows we value employees and the contributions they make to Wollam Construction’s success.”

Reliable Komatsu equipment, service

Recently Wollam Construction undertook an extensive mine reclamation contract, one of the first of its size the firm has tackled. The mass earthwork endeavor involved moving more than 1 million cubic yards of material for fill and returning the mined land back to its original state.

For the reclamation project Wollam Construction augmented its fleet with several rental units from Komatsu’s Salt Lake City store. Among them were Komatsu HD785 rigid-frame haul trucks, D155AX-8 and D375A-8 dozers, as well as PC1250-8 and PC800-8 excavators. The firm also used PC360LC-11 and PC490LCi-11 excavators and WA380-8 wheel loaders on the job.

The first step in the process was regrading slopes and getting them ready to accept the cover material, which was a blend of dirt, topsoil and lime designed for vegetation growth. The dirt and topsoil came from separate on-site locations and were loaded onto the trucks with

the PC1250 and PC800 excavators and hauled to the top of the slopes where the PC360 was used to mix the lime.

Operators used the dozers to push the blend down the slopes. “Our operators were used to a competitive brand, and they were skeptical about the Komatsus. Once they started using them, they changed their tunes,” said Matt. “One area where Komatsu stood out was in getting from the bottom to the top of the steep slopes after a push. In the past, with other brands, they had to turn the machines around and go up the hill facing forward. With the Komatsu dozers, our operators could back up the hill, which was more efficient and productive.”

Wollam Construction also used the PC490 to lift and set concrete drain mats that weighed up to 10,000 pounds. Troy noted that at times nearly all of the equipment was running 12 hours a day, nonstop. “As with every project, this was schedule-critical,” Troy emphasized. “Reliable equipment is essential, and the Komatsu machines stood up to every challenge.” Wollam Construction calls on Komatsu personnel, including the general manager of sales for the Komatsu Rocky Mountain

Region, Jim Slade; the territory manager, Garin Humphrey; and Lynn Holt, who is the product support representative for sales and rentals.

“When Troy joined us, about all we had for equipment was a backhoe and maybe a skid steer or two,” said Matt. “Our first goal was to get an excavator, and Komatsu helped us determine which size was best for us. That was in 2015, and now we have one of the largest Komatsu fleets in the area, thanks to their expertise and ability to find us machines and stand behind them. Komatsu is so innovative, and we got to see that firsthand a couple of

years ago when we went to Japan to visit their plants and see some of the technology that goes into the machines.

“Komatsu machinery has always been very reliable,” Matt added. “With that said, no brand is immune to an occasional issue. What sets it apart is the response from the dealer when one occurs. Komatsu dedicated a mechanic to the reclamation project, and they handled all of the routine services. Jim, Garin, Lynn and others have been fantastic about getting to us right away if we have any need, whether it’s finding a piece of equipment or standing behind it with exceptional service. We’re very happy with the relationship.”

Positive outlook

Matt and Troy see the mining industry continuing to serve as a source for additional assignments. “We worked in the first lithium plant in Utah a couple of years ago, and that market is projected to triple during the next decade,” said Matt. “Copper also has a lot of potential upsides. We are well-positioned to service our mining customers, as well as our other customers.”

Wollam Construction operators and field crew members put in heavy steel piping with Komatsu excavators. (L-R) Komatsu’s Lynn Holt, Garin Humphrey and Jim Slade meet with Wollam Construction President Matt Wollam at his office in Draper, Utah. “Komatsu dedicated a mechanic to the reclamation project, and they handled all of the routine services,” said Matt. “Jim, Garin, Lynn and others have been fantastic about getting to us right away if we have any need, whether it’s finding a piece of equipment or standing behind it with exceptional service. We’re very happy with the relationship.”

10

Troy said that mine reclamation will also be ongoing for the foreseeable future, even if other markets take a downturn. “That’s one reason we decided to pursue it; with our capabilities, we believe we can meet most any customer need. Whether they have a full-scale, comprehensive project or require a specific stand-alone service, we can do it.” ■

Productivity Preparation

Your busiest time of the year is near. Make sure equipment and personnel are ready for maximum production

D

During the winter months, your machinery may have sat for a long period of time, or you may have kept working and just had routine services done during that time. Either way, it is vital to take steps to ensure your equipment is ready for the busy summer days that lie ahead.

Don’t wait

If you have any outstanding work orders or operator repair tickets, finish them as soon as possible. Thoroughly inspect machines a few weeks before the schedule really heats up, and if you find any issues, address them right away. Remember, larger items such as undercarriages take more time to repair, so inspecting them well ahead of time is vital. Buckets, blades, cutting edges and ground engaging tools such as teeth require attention, too. Make sure there are no cracks, chips or excessive wear that could affect safety and performance; replace if needed. Check that your attachment hoses and connectors are in good working order and ready for hydraulic fluids. Hook them up briefly, and run them to see if they are working properly.

Prepare staff members

Make sure employees are aware of schedules, procedures, emergency protocols, and Thoroughly inspect your machinery before the busy construction season starts to ensure it is ready for maximum performance. Make sure everything is in working order and fluids are at their proper levels. Don’t forget to check technology.

the dangers and signs of heat-related illnesses. Employees should also know how to report maintenance items, the functions of new machines, and how to use them to maximize production and efficiency. Plus, make sure they have all the necessary personal protective equipment and that it is in good condition.

Stock up on parts

You should have an easily accessible store of basic maintenance items on hand such as grease, fluids, filters and belts. Having these on hand will save you from making frequent trips to the store, and decrease your overall downtime.

Clean the machine

Have you heard the adage that a clean machine runs better? True or not, you should wash your equipment to remove any dust and/or dirt buildup from storage or from use during the winter months. Cleaning can help you spot potential issues. Remove any debris, including from the engine compartment. Look out for rodent and/or bird nests. Don’t overlook the inside of the cabs — clean the glass, and dust the consoles and dashes. Replace missing or damaged safety decals.

Charge batteries

If you stored batteries, be sure to check them. Before using them, ensure proper water acid levels and fill, if necessary. Batteries that were not charged during storage should be. Coating battery connections with an anti-corrosion spray can prolong system life. Replace batteries if you believe there is any doubt about their safety or reliability.

Check fluid levels

It is essential to keep fluids at proper levels. Make sure there is an operating and maintenance manual available in your machine year-round, and refer to it for guidance. Be sure to grease any points that require it.

12

As temperatures rise, you should switch to fluids that properly match the ambient temperatures. If the machine requires diesel exhaust fluid, draining it and refilling it with new fluids to maintain purity and concentration is highly recommended, regardless of if you used the machine during

During the busy season, your machinery and personnel work hard, so make sure both are ready ahead of time. Check your equipment’s undercarriage, ground engaging tools, fluids, components and other critical items. Make sure staff members have all necessary personal protective equipment and that it is in good condition.

the cold winter months or not. Switch fuel to a summer blend such as No. 2 diesel, and drain the lines of any condensation.

Pay attention to hoses and filters

If fluids are the lifeblood, hoses are the arteries that carry it. Check them for abrasions and leaks; replace immediately if any are found.

Cold can affect filters, so consider replacing them with new ones, including air filtration and air conditioner filters, so operators have a cleaner, more comfortable environment. Dust and contaminants affect filter performance, so keep a close eye on them, and change them as often as necessary.

Don’t overlook technology

Check the connections on your aftermarket GPS systems, as well as those that go with removable monitors. Turn the machine on, and test telematics systems to make sure you can monitor machines through your computer or smart devices. ■

New V-series breakers are fully variable to help maximize productivity and lower per-ton costs

V

Versatility makes breakers some of the most essential tools in the construction and quarry industries. Designed and tested for compatibility with Komatsu PC210 to PC490 excavators, the new JMHB-V breaker series helps customers achieve excellent impact energy and performance on tough tasks such as rock breaking and concrete demolition. “Komatsu fully variable breakers detect the hardness of the material and adjust stroke and impact force of the strike piston accordingly,” said Aaron Scarfia, regional manager, Komatsu North America Attachment Division. “This reduces the amount of blank firing, leading to longer product life.”

Advantages of the new JMHB-V breaker series include:

High productivity and efficiency

With minimal wasted energy and subsequent higher operating efficiency, Komatsu’s 100% hydraulic-fired V-series breakers modulate their impact force and frequency with up to 16 working positions to match most applications’ requirements. Designed to help maximize productivity while helping lower per-ton costs, the breakers are fitted with an innovative energy-saving recovery valve that recuperates energy to drive efficiency.

the best piston stroke length and speed. By adjusting to either hard material, with long and powerful strokes, or to softer material, with shorter and faster strokes, the breakers can achieve high production output, with little wasted impact energy.

Valuable standard features

Komatsu’s new hydraulic V-series breakers have several valuable standard features, including automatic greasing, advanced blank firing protection, swivel hose couplings and heavy-duty housing — designed to optimize breaking and lower per-ton costs.

16

To help owners get more from their investment, Komatsu V-series breakers have several valuable standard features, including automatic greasing, advanced blank firing protection, swivel hose couplings and heavy-duty housing. The shock-dampening systems in the form of upper and lower suspensions help reduce the risk of cracking excavator booms and breaker housings, while the mounted standard automatic lubrication feature helps guard against contamination caused by dust and debris.

Control vibration and noise

For greater operator comfort, suspensions with rubber/poly components help absorb

impact and reduce vibrations through the boom. The completely enclosed sound-dampening housings reduce the amount of noise generated when compared to open-style breakers, to offer customers a solution to addressing noise ordinances in urban applications.

Equipped for dependability

To support regular maintenance of breakers, inspection kits are included with gauges to measure wear on all critical components. Additionally, these breakers are backed by the Komatsu North America Attachment Division, a dedicated hydraulic attachments sales and service team that supports Komatsu distributors. These specialists are factory-trained and experienced with installation, operation, service and rebuilds. “Fully variable breakers offer excellent efficiency,” said Scarfia. “We encourage anyone looking for greater production across a wide variety of demolition applications to contact their dealer representative for more information.” ■
