Pillari Bros. Construction Corp. leverages advanced tech to complete New Jersey sitework projects more efficiently

As a 19-year-old Italian immigrant, Joe Pillari began his construction career in New Jersey in 1954 as a laborer on a blasting crew. In 1985, Joe and his son, Lou, established Pillari Bros. Construction Corp., which has grown from a two-person crew completing sewer and water infrastructure to a prominent player in New Jersey’s construction industry. Today, the Farmingdale-based family business specializes in site development, handling everything from large warehouse spaces to extensive home developments. The Pillari family’s journey from laborers to business owners is a testament to their hard work and determination.

“Our success has always been tied to our ability to provide solutions for unique situations,” said Mike Pillari, Vice President of Pillari Bros. and Joe’s son. “We use technology to enhance efficiency and profitability, partnering with companies like Komatsu to ensure we have the best equipment for the job. Currently, we’re primarily focused on private sector sitework, but we will handle some public projects as well.”

Over the years, Pillari Bros. has always been at the forefront of adopting new technologies.

“We began using GPS on our equipment back in 2002,” recalled Mike. “Staying up to date with technology, whether it’s drone software or 3D modeling, has been crucial to our success. We handle everything in-house and have a dedicated team of engineers to manage these advancements.”

“By using GPS and other tools, we’ve improved productivity and quality significantly. It’s allowed us to manage projects more efficiently and deliver better results for our clients,” said Matthew Pillari, Superintendent (who is also Mike’s cousin).

the industry. With a team of around 60 employees and annual sales of approximately $35 million, the family business continues to thrive by finding projects within its wheelhouse.

Enhanced productivity with IMC

With multiple significant projects active at any given time, Pillari Bros. leverages various pieces of Komatsu Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) equipment to enhance productivity. This includes dozers ranging from a D39PXi-24 to a D71PXi-24 and a pair of PC360LCi-11 and PC490LCi-11 excavators. Pillari Bros. also employs Komatsu WA270, WA320 and WA380 wheel loaders.

“The PC490 is particularly powerful for mass earthwork and deep pipe excavations, handling 10-foot-by-26-foot boxes effortlessly,” Mike commented. “The D71 dozer not only pushes large quantities of materials but can fine grade. They’re true workhorses on our sites.”

“The PC490LCi excavator and D71PXi dozer worked in tandem to move massive amounts of material,” Mike noted. “The D71PXi pushed over 100,000 yards of material efficiently to the excavator, which then loaded it out. Because the ground material was so saturated, we relied heavily on those machines to keep up with the project’s demands without delays.”

Mike highlighted the benefits of utilizing IMC equipment: “The integration of the GPS and grade control technology on our IMC machines allows us to work efficiently, especially in challenging conditions like high groundwater areas in Monmouth and Ocean counties. These GPS-equipped machines have significantly improved our ability to manage detention basin excavations and wet conditions. What really impressed us was that

the grade control kept up with the speed of the hydraulics, providing smooth and accurate grading without slowing down our operators.”

Also, the IMC machines provide real-time feedback for the operator, which Matt appreciates: “What’s nice about the IMC excavators is that you see everything on the display, including plans and other utilities. This helps us avoid redoing work because the grade control will prevent over-digging. It’s a massive time-saver and enhances the precision of our installations.”

If we have any questions, we get ahold of Dominick, and he’s always getting the right people here to help us out with training on the equipment or the software. Komatsu has done an excellent job of maintaining good product support, which is essential for us.”

staged work, we can remain competitive and efficient.”

Mike also sees the next generation playing a role in the company’s future. His son, who is currently studying construction management, and his daughter, who assists with project take-offs, are already getting involved. By nurturing their skills and interest in the business, Pillari Bros. is positioning itself to maintain its legacy and adapt to future challenges. ■

Demolition delivered

Large-scale demolition projects showcase Danco General Contracting Inc.’s versatile skillset, commitment to quality

Established in 1998 in Morganville, N.J., Danco General Contracting Inc. has evolved from a home improvement contractor to a formidable general contracting firm specializing in demolition and environmental services. With operations spanning central and southern New Jersey to Westchester County, N.Y., the company has become a significant player in the industry over the past 26 years. Still, its origin can be traced back even further.

“My fascination with machinery started when I was about 8 or 9, growing up in a newly developed neighborhood,” recalled Daniel Matarese, President and CEO of Danco. “I was mesmerized by the equipment and watching the men working on the sites operate the machines. That really ignited my passion for construction, and it has stuck with me my whole life.”

As a man who has always worked hard to create his own good fortune, Matarese seized opportunities and gradually expanded his business.

“I started doing small jobs in my hometown and eventually took on larger projects, including demolishing properties,” Matarese explained. “Over the years, our projects grew in scale, and we now tackle some of the most complex demolitions across New Jersey.”

Today, Danco focuses exclusively on private work and serves a select group of repeat clients. The business employs a team of 30 skilled professionals and operates a fleet of 50 machines, including excavators with shears, ultra-high-reach equipment, crushers and pulverizers. Matarese attributes much of his success to his faith, the dedication and expertise of his team, and the strong relationships he’s built over the years.

“I’m truly blessed,” said Matarese. “I’ve had the chance to work with incredible people and companies, which has allowed us to grow continuously.”

Demolition equipment

Currently, Danco is engaged in several high-profile demolition projects across New Jersey. The company recently added a Komatsu PC650LC excavator equipped with a Genesis 995 shear to complete the work.

“The PC650 is an amazing machine,” declared Matarese. “When we purchased the excavator

from Komatsu East, we added the Genesis shear to help with demolition work.”

Due to its rotating capability, the Genesis 995 shear is a key component of Danco’s demolition arsenal. It is designed to allow for precise and efficient cuts through heavy steel and concrete structures to enhance the demolition process.

“Our Genesis shear’s response time has been outstanding,” said Matarese. “When we first got it running, both Genesis and Komatsu provided excellent support. It’s turned out to be a great shear that is very capable.”

Matarese added, “We also use crushers and mobile machines right on-site to process all the aggregate. Our Komatsu PC490 excavator and Komatsu WA320 wheel loaders are integral to our operations as well. We’re very proud of our Komatsu equipment.”

One of Danco’s recent projects involved demolishing an old gas research facility, a 40-acre site soon to be transformed into nearly 400 townhomes.

“We started with complete asbestos and environmental remediation before beginning the demolition,” explained Matarese. “Over the past three months, we’ve been taking down the 380,000-square-foot industrial building and recycling the materials on-site. With the Genesis shear, the PC650 has helped us systematically disassemble the building.”

Matarese emphasized that the Komatsu PC650LC’s power and size are critical for such large-scale demolitions.

“When I first got into this business, a mentor told me to own the biggest machine money can buy because you can always do a small job with a big machine, but you can never do a big job with a small machine,” remarked Matarese. “The PC650’s capabilities align with that philosophy.”

Danco also undertakes unique and challenging projects, such as one in Woodbridge, N.J., where the company stabilized a sinking floor within an operational store.

“We installed 180 micro piles and poured a 25,000-square-foot structural slab,” described

Matarese. “It was a complex task, but our team got it done."

In addition to demolition, Danco specializes in mobile crushing and creates various aggregate products on-site.

“We can make many kinds of products, from inch and a half to three-quarter clean,” stated Matarese. “Our mobile quarry setup allows us to handle projects others might shy away from.”

To complete its range of projects, Danco relies on the invaluable support it receives from its equipment distributor, Komatsu East.

“Service and support are paramount because downtime is dead time,” emphasized Matarese. “The machine has to get working every day, and if it’s not working, it’s hard to make a payment. Reliability is everything, and so far, we’ve had excellent reliability with our equipment, and Komatsu’s support is second to none. Every time I’ve had an issue, it’s been resolved within a day or so. Without that level of service, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

The foundation of Danco’s relationship with Komatsu East began with Territory Manager Dominick Vecchiarelli, who Matarese affectionally refers to as a persistent and dedicated salesman.

“Komatsu’s involvement with the YMCA in Monmouth County is something I’m really proud of,” Matarese noted. “They’ve sponsored our golf outing every spring, helping raise money to send

Looking ahead

Despite the inherent challenges of each job, Danco remains committed to quality work.

“Every job has some issues, but it’s how you roll through the situations and find solutions to every problem that will dictate your success. At the end of the day, you just have to deliver," stated Matarese.

Moving forward, Danco is poised for further growth and expansion.

“We want to continue growing and pushing our boundaries to take on larger projects,” said Matarese. “There are always bigger ones, and there are always better ones. We’ll see what the future holds.” ■

Pair of Komatsu East employees name new Komatsu East Insider magazine that will feature personal stories, corporate updates and global perspectives

John J.W. Dickerson and Chris Lutchmansingh have officially unveiled the name for Komatsu East’s new magazine: Komatsu East Insider. The magazine will be a blend of personal stories, corporate updates and global perspectives, ensuring every reader feels like a part of the Komatsu family. The title was selected through the collaborative effort of Dickerson and Lutchmansingh, and it captures the spirit of the publication as well as the company’s commitment to transparency and customer engagement.

Lutchmansingh, who has been a service supervisor at Komatsu East for nearly four years, explained his rationale behind the name.

“I’d heard of the Insider magazine, so initially, I thought Komatsu Insider, but adding East gave it a unique ring,” said Lutchmansingh. “It sounded right, and it truly represents our region.”

Dickerson, a Baltimore-based product support sales representative (PSSR) who has been with Komatsu for 12 years, echoed this sentiment.

“The name Komatsu East Insider caught my ear immediately,” remarked Dickerson. “It opens up what makes our company great and showcases our daily operations. It’s about

giving our customers an inside look at what we do to help them and grow with Komatsu.”

The idea behind the magazine name aligns with Komatsu East’s philosophy of offering a deeper connection to its diverse set of customers.

Lutchmansingh emphasized the personal touch, noting, “We want to give customers an insider perspective on what’s going on with the business and how they can benefit from Komatsu and our allied products. It creates a better level of comfort and engagement.”

Both Dickerson and Lutchmansingh are excited about the magazine’s potential to enhance customer relations and provide valuable insights into the company’s global operations. They believe the publication will not only highlight the achievements and offerings of Komatsu East but also foster a sense of community among employees and customers alike. ■

Technology use in the construction industry has grown rapidly during the past decade and includes both on-machine technology as well as software designed for each stage of project management. Choosing the right technology to move your business forward comes with many questions, and the correct answers depend on what technology your company has already adopted.

Komatsu has long been a technology proponent. It was among the first manufacturers to incorporate telematics into its machinery, with its Komtrax remote monitoring system that enabled customers to monitor fuel usage, idle time, location and more. During the past two decades, Komtrax has expanded to include additional comprehensive information that helps with proactive fleet management, to help reduce downtime as well as owning and operating costs.

“For our customers, Komtrax was a great introductory option down the technology path, and it continues to be a great feature,” said Jason Anetsberger, Director of Customer Solutions, Komatsu. “On our new machines, it’s easily accessible through our My Komatsu platform and lets you monitor any piece of equipment.”

Anetsberger continued, “Now, the question is: what’s the next step that is right for you in this technological journey? Fortunately, we have many Smart Construction solutions depending on where you are at the moment. We offer solutions that can support a small operation that is currently not using any technology, as well as solutions for large multinationals that have fully embraced machine control and project management systems.”

Anetsberger provided some helpful tips for how to determine which Smart Construction solutions could be beneficial and when the right time to add them is. All of the solutions can be accessed and viewed through your My Komatsu account.

No solutions? IMC is a good introduction If you are not using any of Komatsu’s Smart Construction solutions, Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) dozers and excavators may be a good starting point, according to Anetsberger.

When Komatsu introduced its first IMC dozer more than a decade ago, it was the original Smart Construction solution. Several new models and next generation machines have been added that feature fully factory-integrated GPS machine control, which helps increase productivity and efficiency by reducing surveying and staking costs and eliminating the masts and cables of traditional aftermarket GPS add-on systems.

With seven sizes of IMC dozers, ranging from the 105-horsepower D39i-24 to the 354-horsepower D155AXi-8, there is a fit for practically every construction site application. The IMC 2.0 dozers have advanced features such as proactive dozing that enables operators to cut/strip automatically from existing terrain as well as lift layer control, tilt steering control, and quick surface creation.

On the excavator side, there are IMC machines ranging from the 20-ton-class PC210LCi-11 to the 50-ton-class PC490LCi-11. All have semi-automatic functions that go beyond simple guidance to semi-automatically limit over-excavation and trace a target surface. Once target elevation is reached, even if the operator tries to move the joystick to lower the boom, the excavator doesn’t allow it, reducing wasted time and the need for expensive fill material.

IMC 2.0 excavators feature bucket angle hold control, which automatically holds the bucket angle to the design surface during arm operation. It’s less fatiguing for operators, so they can be more productive, and it produces a better finish-grade surface. Plus, auto tilt bucket control assists operators by aligning the bucket parallel with the slope, so that finish grading

can be accomplished without needing to align the machine with the target surface. Testing has shown that these latest generation models help improve accuracy by up to 33% and efficiency as much as 63% compared to conventional excavation and grading methods.

“We have more than a decade of proven success with IMC machines saving time and material costs, to help increase profitability,” said Anetsberger. “IMC was our first Smart Construction solution, and we have built a suite of additional beneficial solutions, including our Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance for standard excavators. This technology is a good entry-level system for someone who may be considering GPS but is not ready to fully commit to integrated machine control.”

Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance is an add-on, indicate-only system that offers many of the benefits of IMC. It’s three-dimensional, so operators get the advantage of seeing where they are on a project, as well as their relation to target elevation. They can set audio alerts that change tone the closer they get to finish grade. That, along with the visual representation on the app, helps keep operators from digging too deep, saves time and lowers costs.

From site to office and vice versa

Additional Smart Construction solutions can help customers better manage their projects from pre-bid to final close out.

Remote allows users to remotely send design files to targeted machines in the field and remotely support operators without driving to the job site, saving time and fuel expenses. With remote access, contractors can help their operators troubleshoot issues in real time by viewing the same visuals as in the machine.

To help users with tracking cut/fill progress, Dashboard allows remote visualization of job site terrain progress, with the aim to have a digital twin of the job site material movements. It combines data from multiple sources into one comprehensive picture and provides a 3D graphic visualization of all design, drone and machine data to measure cuts/fills, quantities and productivity. Users can confirm pre-bid and topographical map data, track site progress in near real time, document job site conditions as evidence for change orders, and quickly and easily measure quantities.

Hybrid HB365LC-3 excavator offers significant fuel savings, reduced emissions and improved productivity over a standard excavator

Looking for ways to increase production while reducing costs? In today’s economy with diesel prices higher than ever, using a hybrid excavator such as Komatsu’s hybrid HB365LC-3 is a solid solution, according to Kurt Moncini, Senior Product Manager, Komatsu, who recently retired. The HB365LC-3 provides fuel savings, reduced emissions and improved productivity compared to a standard excavator.

“Hybrid technology continues to grow and be adopted in the automotive world, and the construction industry is coming around to the benefits such as lower fuel costs and emissions,” said Moncini. “The HB365LC-3 offers increased fuel efficiency without sacrificing power, so the overall performance is outstanding. A topper on the cake is the added benefit of reduced emissions that lowers your carbon footprint and promotes sustainability.”

Moncini continued, “Based on EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) CO2 formula, the hybrid potentially offers an up to 20% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the standard PC360LC-11. It’s a big win all around.”

Komatsu introduced the 36-ton hybrid HB365LC-3 the industry’s first true hybrid in

that class size — in 2017. Since then, thousands have been used around the world for all types of excavation, loading trucks and to perform other tasks. The HB365LC-3 followed the introduction of Komatsu’s first hybrid excavator, which was launched in 2008.

In addition to the fuel savings and reduced emissions the HB365LC-3 provides, customers noted that one of the main decision-makers when choosing the hybrid excavator was the improvement in productivity.

“The hybrid HB365LC-3 has equal or better performance than our standard PC360LC excavator, but with fuel savings that could be as high as 20%, depending on application,” said Moncini. “It’s a great fit for construction companies that use excavators in high-swing applications, as well as for feeding crushers in quarry, recycling and demolition applications where swing is a constant.”

An electric swing motor captures and regenerates energy as the upper structure slows down and converts it to electric energy.

Moncini explained, “It’s using energy that would normally be wasted and makes it available to do work, contributing to increased efficiency and decreased diesel usage.”

The HB365LC-3's improved warranty covers the electric swing motor, motor-generator, capacitor and inverter.

Highly responsive

The energy captured during each swing braking cycle is stored in the hybrid HB365LC-3’s ultracapacitor. Each time the excavator swings, the capacitor discharges electric power to the electric swing motor.

“A traditional battery requires time for the chemical process that releases electricity to occur,” stated Moncini. “The heavy work nature of construction equipment places a much faster demand on power transfer. The ultracapacitor’s ability to store and discharge energy quickly makes it ideal.”

He added, “When it comes to the boom arm and bucket, the capacitor drives the swing, and all available engine horsepower can go into the hydraulic system. This creates faster cycle time and a very quick, responsive swing. It’s snappy.”

In addition to powering the swing motor, the ultracapacitor sends electric energy to the engine via the motor-generator. This energy is used to accelerate the engine from an ultra-low idle speed of 700 revolutions per minute (rpm) and improve hydraulic response.

Tier 4 and more

Komatsu recently improved the warranty on the HB365LC-3’s hybrid components.

The special hybrid component warranty term is now up to seven years or 15,000 hours and covers the electric swing motor, motor-generator, capacitor and inverter. If you sell the excavator, the warranty is transferrable.

The hybrid HB365LC-3’s 269-horsepower engine is a six-cylinder with a Komatsu aftertreatment system that meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. A Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) work together to inject Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and decompose nitrous oxide into non-toxic water and nitrogen.

Komatsu Care comes standard, including one complimentary KDPF exchange and one SCR service during the first five years. It also covers scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 2,000 hours. All work is done by factory-trained distributor technicians.

Hours and key performance data can be tracked remotely with Komtrax. Operators can see the information first-hand on the 7-inch, color LCD monitor, including a capacitor charge gauge, DEF levels and a rear-view camera. Komtrax has an Operator Identification System that records machine-operation and application data for up to 100 individual ID codes.

Operators will also appreciate lower noise levels in the spacious ROPS (roll-over protective structure)-certified cab. Features include vibration-dampening mountings and a fully adjustable, air-suspension seat and arm rests. A Bluetooth AM/FM radio is now standard on new machines. ■

Three Komatsu excavators are featured on Construction Equipment magazine’s annual list of top new products, including the PC130LC-11, the PC490LCi-11 and the PC900LC-11.

According to Construction Equipment, its Top 100 New Products list is the longest-running awards program of its kind in the industry. Each year, editors evaluate products introduced during the previous months and choose those considered most innovative based on four criteria:

• Is it an advancement in technology?

• Is it a new product line?

• Does it offer significant improvements to an existing product?

• Does it increase competition in its category?

Increased lift capacity

Komatsu’s upgraded PC130LC-11 features a longer undercarriage with 8% more track length, which provides greater stability and increased operating weight. That contributes to increased lift capacity over the front and side up to 20% compared to the previous model.

With an operating weight of 28,440 to 29,101 pounds, the PC130LC-11 is highly transportable and can be moved with a tag trailer and still have capacity to spare for additional support equipment.

Innovative bucket angle hold control

With Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) 2.0, the PC490LCi-11 offers sophisticated productivity-enhancing automation, making it an excellent match for excavation, trenching, slope work or fine grading. The excavator helps minimize over-excavation, empowering operators of all skill levels to dig straight to grade quickly and accurately.

The PC490LCi-11 features bucket angle hold control that automatically holds the bucket angle to the design surface during arm operation, enabling operators to perform finish grading using only arm input. It also has a new 10.4-inch IMC monitor with increased memory capacity, processing speed, and pinch-to-zoom functionality.

The PC900LC-11 is ideal for those working in applications that involve moving large amounts of material efficiently. Productivity was a major driver of its design. It’s a mass excavator with the ability to handle a wide variety of jobs and materials, and can perform compound operations.

Designed for heavy construction, demolition, material handling, deep sewer, water, large mass excavation and quarries/mining, the PC900LC-11 provides increased bucket and lifting capacity for higher performance compared to its predecessor, the PC800LC-8. Major structures, booms and arms as well as a redesigned revolving frame were engineered to increase longevity.

Using their feedback, we made changes to make the interface more user-friendly. Customers who already have a My Komatsu account will see the updates automatically.”

Casey said one of the priorities based on customer feedback was a redesign of the My Fleet page, emphasizing that its substantially different look and easier navigation enable users to see their entire fleet of registered machines all on a single page without having to go through multiple tabs.

“We also expanded the ability to filter by idle time percentage, SMR range, model type, manufacturer, and much more,” Casey added. “A new sync map feature lets users zoom in on

a particular territory, click the sync map to list button, and see machines just in that territory.”

Component tracking capability

Another major change is the addition of component tracking, according to Casey. The new functionality allows users to monitor component health, so they can more proactively plan for replacements.

“Users can set an interval based on last service date or SMR hours of the machine, then create an alert that notifies them when a component is due for replacement,” Casey explained.

Machine health and fleet monitoring are now easier, faster and more efficient with new alerting features, including additional alert types for abnormality codes, coverage, Komatsu Oil and Wear Analysis (KOWA) samples, and more. Consolidated and customizable views of your alerts can be set with the alerting dashboard. With My Komatsu, you can choose how to receive notifications by web, mobile app, email or SMS.

Telematics information (Komtrax) in My Komatsu remains a vital feature that works with Komatsu and other brands that you have registered in your My Komatsu account. You can view machine location, fuel consumption,

and machine health, which includes maintenance history.

Fully understanding equipment capabilities offers valuable insights into how it can help your operations. Experiencing a machine from the operator’s seat takes it to another level. Komatsu gave attendees opportunities to do both during its recent Demo Days event at its Cartersville Customer Center in Georgia.

More than 30 products, ranging from compact excavators to large construction, demolition, forestry and mining machines, were available for customers to see up close and operate.

Representatives from Komatsu and Komatsu affiliates Montabert, Lehnhoff and Hensley Industries provided insight on effectively implementing the equipment and attachments into attendees’ operations.

Komatsu Smart Construction and Smart Quarry representatives set up display areas to provide information on solutions available for job site management, such as Smart Construction Remote, Office, Field and Drone, and Smart Quarry Site and Smart Quarry Study. My Komatsu representatives also provided information about Komatsu’s central hub for fleet management.

“What we’re hoping our customers take away is our dedication to them and their business,” said Andrew Earing, Director of Operator and Technical Training at Komatsu’s Cartersville Customer Center. “We have more than 100

Komatsu employees here, ranging from service engineers to product management, to answer questions and listen to customers to learn more about their needs and how Komatsu can help them drive their job site efficiencies.”

Mix of equipment

Each day began with informative presentations about equipment, Smart Construction solutions and Smart Quarry solutions that Komatsu offers for productivity and efficiency. Hands-on operation followed, letting customers operate a mix of standard and Intelligent Machine Control (IMC) equipment in working environments on the 38-acre site.

“It’s neat to see all the yellow iron together, from motor graders to dozers to excavators, loaders and the intelligent machines,” said Eli McDonald, Equipment Coordinator for Reece Albert Inc. and CSA Materials Inc. in San Angelo, Texas. “It’s rare to see this many assets in one spot. I hope to take away the knowledge to go back and reassess our fleet and improve our operations.”

IMC 2.0 dozers ranging from the D39EXi-24 to the D71PXi-24 and IMC 2.0 excavators ranging from the PC210LCi-11 to the PC490LCi-11 — all of which are equipped with factory-integrated GPS machine control — were highly popular during the event. Customers could also operate a PC138USLC-11 with 3D Machine Guidance. This Smart Construction solution brings 3D to most conventional excavators and gives operators in the field and managers in the office access to 3D design and topography data that helps drive accuracy.

“Our big excavators are 90% Komatsu, including IMC machines, and we also have IMC dozers,” said Dan Earley, a co-owner of LEi in Rapid City, S.D., noting that his company also uses Komatsu’s Smart Construction Office and Dashboard. “It makes my operators more efficient. There’s so much data in there we can collect and see where production is on a daily basis. Now, with Office and Dashboard, we can see in real time what was done that day. Did we get enough moved? The information is invaluable. I appreciate coming down here and getting to run what we want. I hope to keep coming back. This is a great event.”

Hybrid highlight

Komatsu also featured its HB365LC-3 hybrid excavator. Energy is captured during swing and stored in the ultracapacitor. When swinging, all available hydraulic power is sent to the boom, arm and bucket, which supports improved cycle time, reduced fuel consumption and increased production, compared to a standard excavator.

“It is something that I think we would really like in our company,” said Troy Henderson, a part owner of KTA Construction in San Diego. “Being in California with the emission regulations that we have to deal with, the hybrid is a great choice for our fleet.”

Harry Olsen, the chief operating officer and a co-owner of Hugo Tree, a company that does land clearing, sitework and demolition in Hugo, Minn., commented, “I think one of the things Komatsu’s always done really well is make a very efficient, smooth machine, and I think the hybrid is the next evolution. We do a lot of

stacking and material handling, so having that very finite swing is nice. It’s efficient.”

Learning opportunity

Additionally, there were demonstrations of Komatsu’s new PC490HRD-11 high-reach demolition excavator equipped with a K100 boom change system that allows for boom changes from the cab of the machine, as well as a soon-to-be-available Komatsu PC360LC-11 straight boom demolition machine. Attendees could also check out demonstrations of Komatsu’s Smart Construction Drone and Komatsu’s RF-5 reclaim feeder.

“One of the things we are proud of here is we let customers get in the equipment, touch the quality, feel the performance and get the full experience of our product, but Demo Days is about more than that,” stated Earing. “It’s an opportunity for both us and our customers to learn more about each other. It’s a great platform and venue to connect with our customers and truly understand their needs.” ■
