Uganda: Construction Sector Faces Modest Inflation Rise
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) recently released its latest Construction Input Price Index (CIPI), revealing a 1.2% increase in construction sector inflation for the year ending September 2024. This marks a slight slowdown compared to the 1.5% rise recorded in August.
The CIPI measures price changes in key construction materials, labor, and equipment, offering valuable insights into trends across the industry. Irene N. Musiitwa, Senior Statistician at UBOS, highlighted notable price shifts in different construction sub-sectors.
Building materials saw a 2.2% price increase in September, up from 2.0% in August. In contrast, civil engineering materials experienced a smaller rise of 1.0%, down from 1.2% the previous month. Prices for specialized construction activities also increased, though at a slower pace of 0.4%, compared to 1.1% in August.
“Prices in the construction sector are influenced by material availability and market demand,” Musiitwa explained, noting that rising costs for roofing materials and timber were key contributors to the sector's inflation.
Roofing materials saw a notable 9.8% price increase, up from 5.5% in August, while timber prices rose by 2.5%, a significant jump from the previous month's 1.6%. Additionally, clay bricks and tiles saw a slight 0.2% price uptick after a 0.4% decrease in August.
On the other hand, certain materials experienced price declines, offering some relief to the sector. Diesel prices fell by 1.6% yearon-year, a reversal from a 2.6% rise in August. Lime also saw a significant annual price drop of 12.3%, though this was a smaller decrease compared to the 20.5% decline recorded in the prior period.
On a monthly basis, the CIPI rose by a modest 0.1% in September, following a slight 0.1% decrease in August. The increase was mainly driven by price hikes in materials like roofing sheets and concrete blocks.
UBOS emphasized the importance of these trends for businesses and policymakers in the construction industry. "The CIPI provides critical data for managing costs and planning future projects," Musiitwa said, underlining its significance for longterm budgeting and forecasting within the sector.

Nigeria's 1,068-Kilometre Superhighway Project Kicks off after a 48-year Delay
Construction of a 120-km section of the SokotoBadagry Superhighway begins
The long awaited Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway Construction project has made a significant step as the Federal Government of Nigeria launched the construction of Section I of the project. This section is expected to stretch a distance of 120 kilometers. The ceremony was held on 24th of October in Ilelah Town, Sokoto State.
According to the Ministry of Works, this road section will feature a total of six lanes. There will be three on each side that will be separated by landscaped medians. Additionally, they will be built with rigid concrete pavement in order to enhance the road’s durability and long-term value.
Minister of Works David Umahi said Hitech Construction Company Limited was chosen for the section. The company was selected due
to its ability to meet deadlines and specifications supported by cutting edge equipment and skilled manpower. Moreover, he also noted that this company has delivered similar projects successfully. The projects include Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos and is also currently working on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
It was also pointed out that this mega road project breaks a 48-year jinx. It had been initially conceived during the former President Shehu Shagari administration.
This 1,068-kilometer Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway project will serve as a Trade, Transport, and Security (TTS) Greenfield corridor, said Engineer Bakare Umar who is the Director of Highways, Construction and Rehabilitation.
The road is expected to pass through multiple states namely: Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and eventually end in Lagos. The highway will also connect the existing inter-border routes and towns. This is expected to facilitate quick access, and also strengthen the existing border settlements through trade support, security, and regional integration.
Tanzania opens longest bridge in East Africa
Tanzania recently completed East Africa's longest bridge, a landmark 3.2-kilometre structure spanning Lake Victoria in the country's northwestern Mwanza region. Named the Magufuli Bridge after the late President John Magufuli, the £240 million ($300 million) project represents a significant infrastructure achievement for the nation.
The main contractor was the China Civil Engineering Construction Group (CCECG). The project was funded by the government of Tanzania.
The construction works of the project commenced in the year 2019 under the late President John Pombe Magufuli. However, its progress faced challenges after the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic which led to the delay of the completion of the project.
PROJECT SUMMARY
Name: Magufuli Bridge
Length: 3.2 kilometers
Contractor: CCECG
Cost: $300 million
Significance: Catalyst for economic growth; faster movement of goods, services, and people
Initially, the bridge was named the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge. The name was later changed to Magufuli Bridge in order to honor the country’s late head of state. Magufuli launched this mega project before his death in 2021.
The Magufuli Bridge stands as the longest of its kind in Africa and is the only extradosed cabled- stayed Bridge in the Lake Victoria region.
According to the current standing statistics, this mega bridge project will surely book a spot among the top 10 longest bridges in Africa. This bridge comes with a number of benefits to the people of Tanzania. It is expected to be a catalyst for economic growth in a large part of the country.
Additionally, the bridge will enable faster movement of goods, services, and people. “It will enable faster movement by cutting the travel time to approximately five minutes which when compared to using a ferry for transportation, which takes over 2 hours,” one of the area residents said.

Schneider Electric's new Altivar Solar ATV320 Variable Speed Drive
Schneider Electric South Africa has launched its Altivar Solar ATV320 variable speed drive (VSD), a solarpowered drive solution that is compatible with a wide range of water pumps, catering for water challenges and decarbonisation of irrigation pumping and agri-processing machinery.
The Altivar Solar ATV320 is Schneider Electric’s replacement offer for the Altivar Solar 312 model, which has reached the end of commercialisation. The Altivar Solar ATV320 drive is robust, simple to commission and easy to integrate for pumping applications.
“This product is part of our Access to Energy portfolio, so it is designed for use in remote areas or areas with no access to energy. However, it can also reduce energy costs if used in applications where there is electricity because it is solar-powered. When not connected to solar panels, the drive can be connected to the
grid,” says Luthando Makiwane, Industry Automation Marketing Manager at Schneider Electric South Africa.
Altivar Solar ATV320 VSD is suited to a range of different types of pumps, including submersible, surface-mounted and water storage tank pumps. The product is designed for both residential and agricultural applications.
Agricultural applications
“The Altivar Solar variable speed drive has seen significant uptake in the agricultural sector, where farmers are looking to reduce energy costs and also to adopt green technology in their operations,” says Makiwane.
He notes that Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy portfolio is committed to connecting 100 million people by 2030 with green electricity through dedicated product offers and solutions which
are aligned with the company’s purpose and mission as an impact company that builds to deliver positive effect in the long run.
The Altivar Solar ATV320 features various advanced features compared to the previous ATV312 range, including:
• Dual power supply mode (solar and grid): A wide DC voltage range enables users to connect high-wattage panels to the ATV320 solar drive,
• Remote On/Off of the pump through SMS or EcoStruxure Energy Access – Livelihood platform; and,
• Dedicated solar drive with in-built maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and solar-specific functions for multiple solar applications.
“This variable drive harvests the maximum solar energy to run the pump for the maximum duration in a day by controlling the speed of the motor based on the power available from solar panels,” says Makiwane.
“The built-in MPPT function helps to ensure that you get the most power out of the solar panels and that the pump operates optimally throughout the day.”
Energy savings
Because the Altivar Solar drive can connect to the grid and solar PV source, it helps to ensure water pumping can be done at night and even on cloudy days. The drive is optimised for pumping applications and can achieve up to 30% energy savings.
Additionally, the Altivar Solar drives have a built-in monitoring function to help prevent the pump from running dry. If there is no water in the pump, the released heat could damage it over time, potentially shortening its service life.
The Altivar Solar ATV320 variable-speed drive is now available in South Africa, East Africa and West Africa, through Schneider Electric’s distributors.
The built-in MPPT function helps to ensure that you get the most power out of the solar panels and that the pump operates optimally throughout the day.
ACTOM Opens New Training Centre to Address South Africa’s Skills Dearth
ACTOM (Pty) Ltd, the largest manufacturer and supplier of electro-mechanical equipment in Sub-Saharan Africa, has opened a new training centre facility that offers a variety of apprenticeship programmes at its premises in Germiston, east of Johannesburg.
Kobus Swanepoel, Technical Training Manager at Actom Training Centre, explains that relocating the 30-year-old training centre to its new and bigger premises will enable the training centre to leverage new state-of-the-art equipment and training facilities for more apprentices per intake.
“The training centre is accredited for training apprentices in eight different trades, namely Mechanical Fitter, Fitter and Turner, Metal Machinist, Tool, Jig and Die Maker, Millwright, Electrician, Boilermaker and Welder,” he says.
Swanepoel adds that the new centre is currently in the process of obtaining its new accreditation from the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). The centre’s legacy certification expires in November 2024, and it is therefore obliged to apply for accreditation in line with the recently amended occupational qualifications.
International recognition
“The apprentice programmes we offer are completed over three years and consist of theoretical, practical and work-based training components. At the end of the training, apprentices must pass a trade test to obtain a Red Seal certificate allowing them to be recognised internationally as artisans,” states Swanepoel. He notes that while Actom Training Centre was never a trade test centre historically, the new venue and additional space will enable the

training centre to now do trade testing internally and it is currently applying for accreditation for this function.
“Currently, we take in 150 candidates per year. While we could accommodate more, we instead want to focus on delivering quality training to those enrolled,” he says.
When ACTOM (Pty) Ltd initially established the training centre, Swanepoel says that the idea behind it was to train artisans specifically for the company. However, about three years ago, ACTOM (Pty) Ltd expanded this mandate to extend training to apprentices from other companies.
New intake of apprentices
This year, he says, Actom Training Centre received a grant from a SETA for 50 apprentices and they are also training 38 apprentices from other companies. These apprentices started their training programme on 1 June. Of this cohort of 120, 32 are from ACTOM (Pty) Ltd divisions, 50 from Actom Training Centre and 38 from other companies.
“By training apprentices for the wider industry, we are looking at the bigger picture. By using the training centre to develop skills for the industry, we are looking to make a difference in the unemployment crisis, which will ultimately benefit the broader economy. We are planning to position our training centre as one of the best in the country,” says Swanepoel.
“ACTOM (Pty) Ltd has invested a considerable amount of money to ensure that we can produce quality apprentices that will ultimately help the industry. There are so many unemployed people in South Africa, so there is a tremendous need for people to be trained especially in trade skills. I believe that we can make a huge difference in the industry and people's lives by giving them greater opportunities.”
Textured Paints
An attractive option for wall finish
Textured paints are specialized coatings that add a tactile finish to surfaces, creating depth and visual interest. They have become quite popular with some homeowners.
When you hear "textured paint," you might envision pricey, high-end decor. However, it’s actually a straightforward and imaginative way to revamp even the simplest living spaces, often at a budget-friendly price.
What Is Textured Paint?
Standard paint typically offers a flat and uniform appearance, with variations in colour, type, and quality being the main distinctions. If you’re aiming for a look that’s unique, rustic, casual, or chic, textured paints could be the perfect solution.
Textured paints are specialized coatings that add a tactile finish to surfaces, creating depth and visual interest. They contain additives like sand, mica, or
other materials that give them a three-dimensional quality. These paints can be used on walls, ceilings, or furniture to achieve various effects, such as a stucco, stone, or even a fabric-like appearance.
Textured paint comes pre-mixed in various finishes (ranging from 0.5mm to 2mm textures). Alternatively, one can create them by mixing regular paint with non-chemical additives like silica sand. The size of these aggregates determines whether the final texture is coarse or fine. This is not recommended unless one is well-versed in this kind of work.
Why Choose Textured Paint?
Textured paints can breathe new life into even the most mundane spaces. They’re particularly valuable for commercial property owners looking to entice customers with distinctive designs and visual effects. Beyond aesthetics, textured paints effectively conceal imperfections such as cracks and damages in walls that regular paint can’t address without compromising the wall’s appearance.
Some textured paints are formulated with specialized additives and resins, making them resistant to fungi and capable of withstanding moisture and UV damage. This feature is especially beneficial for outdoor applications, enhancing the durability and upkeep of exterior walls.
Additional benefits include crack resistance—thanks to a thicker film—and heat resistance, making them adaptable to extreme temperature changes.
How to Apply Textured Paint
The application of textured paint varies based on the desired effect and finish. Start with the usual preparation: ensure the base surface is clean and apply a suitable undercoat using a regular paintbrush. For the best results, the undercoat color should closely match your intended final shade. Avoid applying paint on external walls during rain or when rain is expected soon after. Choose a textured paint, typically an acrylic with varying aggregate sizes, and conduct a color test to find the perfect shade. For a rustic look, coarser aggregates may be preferable. Dilute the acrylic paint with water or recommended agents to achieve the right thickness and consistency.
Apply the base coat with an exterior emulsion paint roller, or use microfiber rollers for lighter applications. For intricate patterns, a honeycomb roller can create detailed designs, rotating the direction of application for variety. This initial base coat application is crucial for ensuring a consistent final finish. Allow
the base coat to dry for 2 to 8 hours, depending on thickness and temperature, and gently sand or brush off any excess paint.
Once the base coat is dry, apply a single layer of primer with the exterior roller, or a fine-textured emulsion roller for specific patterns. After about 2 hours of drying, follow up with a coat of royal matte emulsion paint, exploring different colors to enhance the design. At this stage, you can implement the final design using various colors of emulsion paint.
By using textured paint, you can creatively transform your living or commercial space, adding depth and character that goes beyond a simple flat finish.
Some textured paints are formulated with specialized additives and resins, making them resistant to fungi and capable of withstanding moisture and UV damage. This feature is especially beneficial for outdoor applications, enhancing the durability and upkeep of exterior walls.

How Construction Companies Use Technology to Improve Client Relations
Client relationships are essential for construction companies to build and maintain. With competition growing and expectations rising, construction companies are leveraging technology to provide better experiences and foster stronger connections with their clients. By enhancing communication, streamlining project management, and offering transparency, these businesses are turning to tech solutions to bridge the gap between themselves and those they serve. Here’s a closer look at six ways that technology is helping construction companies build better relationships with their clients.
Better Communication Throughout the Design Process
Effective communication is required for construction projects, and modern technology has made it easier for companies to keep clients informed at every step. One key area of focus is design communication, which is important to ensuring that the client’s vision aligns with the project’s outcome. By using advanced digital tools, construction firms can share detailed designs and 3D models with clients, allowing for real-time feedback and collaboration.
This approach minimizes misunderstandings and allows clients to see how their ideas are being translated into the final project. Not only does this improve the accuracy of the work being done, but it also makes clients feel more involved and valued throughout the process. As a result, construction companies can deliver results that more closely align with their clients’ expectations, strengthening trust and satisfaction.
Using Software to Foster Stronger Client Connections
For construction companies, the days of managing client information through spreadsheets and paper files are long gone. Today, many are turning to specialized software solutions like a construction CRM to keep track of interactions, streamline communications, and manage client data more effectively. A construction CRM allows contractors to manage project timelines, client preferences, and past interactions all in one place. This makes it easier to offer personalized updates and ensure that no detail is overlooked.
By integrating such software into their operations, companies can respond more quickly to client inquiries and maintain a history of interactions that helps anticipate client needs. In a world where responsiveness can make or break a deal, this technology helps build confidence and reinforces a sense of professionalism, making clients more likely to engage in future projects.
Virtual Walkthroughs and 3D Visualization
Gone are the days when clients had to wait until a project was well underway before seeing how it would come together. With virtual walkthroughs and 3D visualization, construction companies can offer clients a specialized sneak peek into the final product, before the first brick is laid. These tools allow clients to “walk” through their projects, providing a realistic sense of the space and the opportunity to make adjustments before construction begins.
By utilizing these visualization tools, construction companies can save time and different resources by identifying potential issues early in the design phase. For clients, this technology provides peace of mind, knowing that they can see the progress and make changes without waiting until the project is already in progress. It fosters a sense of involvement and transparency that makes clients feel like true partners in the project.
Project Management Platforms That Keep Clients in the Loop
Managing a construction project involves coordinating multiple teams, schedules, and deadlines. But today, digital project management platforms make it easier for companies to keep clients informed about the progress of their projects as part of good client relationships during construction. These platforms provide clients with access to timelines, budgets, and status updates, creating a single place where they can see how things are going.
By offering this transparency, construction companies can address client concerns more quickly and ensure that everyone is on the same page. Clients appreciate having the ability to monitor their project’s progress without needing to reach out constantly for updates. This transparency helps to build trust, as clients can see that their contractors are being upfront about timelines and costs. For the construction company, this also means fewer surprises, as clients are more likely to communicate potential issues before they become major setbacks.
Improved Customer Service With AI and Chatbots
Artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbots aren’t just for customer service in retail—they’re becoming valuable tools for construction companies as well. By implementing AI-powered chatbots, companies can answer client questions and provide support even outside of regular business hours. These chatbots can handle frequently asked questions, such as those related to timelines or material choices, giving clients instant access to information.
This level of responsiveness helps to improve the client experience, as clients appreciate being able to get faster answers without having to wait for a callback or email response. For construction companies, this technology helps to reduce the work on their customer service teams while still maintaining a high level of client satisfaction. It’s a win-win that allows companies to maintain a professional and attentive presence even when they’re not immediately available.
Essential Skills for Construction Industry Workers
In today's competitive construction industry, equipping employees with the right skills is more important than ever. As the demand for skilled labor continues to rise, employee training programs have become an essential tool for construction companies aiming to enhance productivity, reduce risks, and stay ahead of industry trends. Let's explore several types of training programs that are critical for businesses to implement in order to ensure their workforce is highly competent and adaptable.
Orientation Training
When bringing new employees on board, one of the first steps for any construction company is to conduct comprehensive orientation training. This ensures that new hires understand the company's culture, values, and procedures from day one. Beyond familiarizing them with their job duties, orientation training should include:
• Introduction to key managers and executives
• Clear guidelines for workplace conduct and safety protocols
• An overview of company policies, such as timekeeping, safety regulations, and performance expectations
By making orientation training a priority, employers can foster a positive working environment and reduce the chances of early turnover, setting employees up for success from the outset.
• Improving leadership skills for project managers and supervisors
Technology Training
As technology continues to reshape the construction industry, contractors must invest in ongoing tech training to keep their employees up to date. Modern construction projects rely heavily on software, tools, and machinery that can drastically improve efficiency, reduce errors, and streamline communication. Therefore, it is vital to provide workers with the necessary skills to use new technologies effectively. This can include:
• Training on project management software and digital collaboration tools
• Familiarizing workers with new equipment and machinery that enhance productivity
• Teaching them how to leverage technology for better data collection, monitoring, and analysis
By incorporating tech training into the workforce development strategy, construction companies can ensure that their workers remain relevant in an increasingly digital industry and boost overall productivity.
Interpersonal Skills Training
Effective communication is the backbone of any successful construction project. Construction sites involve teams of diverse individuals working together in challenging environments, making interpersonal skills training vital. Employees should be trained in both verbal and non-verbal communication to ensure smooth collaboration across various roles. Key aspects of interpersonal skills training include:
• Developing active listening skills for better coordination
• Enhancing conflict resolution techniques to address issues before they escalate
• Promoting teamwork and collaboration across departments and teams
By improving communication and teamwork, construction companies can not only reduce errors and misunderstandings but also create a safer and more productive work environment.
Safety and Compliance Training
In an industry as physically demanding and high-risk as construction, ensuring that workers are properly trained in safety protocols is non-negotiable. Safety training programs should be regularly updated to reflect the latest regulations and best practices, including:
• Teaching workers how to use safety equipment correctly Understanding OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and local regulations
• Identifying potential hazards and taking preventive measures
• Conducting regular drills for emergency situations, such as fire or building collapse scenarios
A robust safety training program not only reduces the risk of accidents and injuries but also helps companies avoid costly fines and liabilities while promoting a culture of safety.
Conclusion
Ultimately, implementing comprehensive employee training programs can significantly improve workforce performance, reduce production costs, and increase overall efficiency. By providing employees with the right tools, technologies, and skills, construction companies position themselves for long-term success in an increasingly complex and competitive market. Whether through orientation, technology, interpersonal skills, or safety training, a well-trained workforce is an invaluable asset for any contractor striving to achieve high standards of excellence.
