Kahramaa wins global energy award

Three renewable energy systems at Kahramaa’s alternative energy awareness park project in Qatar have won the Energy Globe Award for the best sustainability project.

The Kahramaa Awareness Park is an innovative project, located near Al Thumama Roundabout, designed as a science museum for disseminating information on ways to conserve water and electricity, and serves as an original source of knowledge for young visitors.

The three systems will contribute to power generation and water heating for the building.

The installations are a 63.3 kWp photovoltaic system, 41m² of flat plate collectors for solar water heating and 3x10 kW wind turbines.

Markus Jordan, a managing partner at Innovations Unlimited ME, which was commissioned to implement the project, commended Kahramaa on its win and expressed the company’s gratification for playing a role in this visionary project that may potentially become one of Qatar’s sustainability landmarks.

Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation) is the water and electricity utilities provider in the state.

The award was handed at the Advantage Austria Office Doha.

At the event, Gerd Bommer, Austrian Commercial Counsellor, said the award was in recognition of the sustainability awareness efforts initiated by Kahramaa through its innovative project.

The park has been designed to function as a science museum for disseminating information on ways to conserve water and electricity and also to serve as an original source of knowledge for visitors.

The Kahramaa Awareness Park project was implemented with the support of Innovations Unlimited ME, a company founded by Austrian in Doha.

Innovations Unlimited ME installed three renewable energy systems, the wind turbines, the photovoltaic and the solar thermal system, which were mainly manufactured in Austria.

The award was accepted on behalf of Kahramaa by Qassim Abdulla Al Mahmoud, Head of Design Engineering.

Also present at the event were the architects and designers of the building itself, Waleed Mourcy of James Cubitt Architects.

Qatar’s mega projects on track

Qatar’s national development plans are diverse and the current infrastructure boom is part of a strategy to build an economy that is independent of its hydrocarbon resources.

These infrastructure developments are designed to not only drive more business visitors to Qatar but also tourists.

The projects included the $15 billion Hamad International Airport, with the first phase having opened in the first quarter of 2014. The facility is expected to be fully operational by 2020.

The railway construction is expected to be another jewel in Doha’s crown, at a cost of $25 billion, and a further $6 billion was allotted to the now almost complete Doha Port project which includes a cruise ship terminal.

The $7billion project is currently the world’s largest “greenfield” port-development project. It is intended to better position Qatar to benefit from the expected regional growth in container and vehicle carrier traffic as well as general cargo traffic.

Qatar will also be adding a few new MICE venues, like the new Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, which will provide 29,000 square meters of conference space when it opens.

According to the hospitality sector, 110 hotels are under construction in Qatar, potentially adding a further 19,931 rooms to the current 13,407 rooms available.

In preparation for one of the of the world’s highest-profile sporting events, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar is to build nine new stadiums and refurbish three existing facilities.

The 12 venues cover different areas in Qatar, including Al-Daayen, Doha, Al-Khor, Al-Rayyan, Al-Shamal, Al-Wakrah and Umm Slal, with a showcase stadium being planned for Lusail City where the opening match is to be played.

Al Khafji and Arab League streets being widened

As part of efforts to develop Doha’s road network, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is implementing phase one of the development of Al Khafji Street. Construction work, which started on June 24, will last for about three months.

Work during this phase will include converting the Jelaiha Roundabout to a signal-controlled intersection as well as upgrading around 300 meters of the streets surrounding the roundabout, namely Al Khafji and Arab League streets.

The two streets are being widened from three to four lanes in each direction to enhance capacity and to allow a smooth traffic flow.

In a bid to reduce the impact of work on road users as much as possible, one lane is being closed while two lanes remain open in each direction during the construction period.

Entrance and egress to residential buildings and businesses in the area will remain open.

All phases of the development of the Jelaiha Roundabout and its surrounding streets are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

New sun control fabric ‘to cut energy costs by 25%’

GCC buildings can reduce energy costs by up to 25% with a new line of sun control fabric launched recently by Hunter Douglas, according to industry experts.

Demonstrating the strong potential for building sustainability, the GCC hosts 1,236 LEEDrated projects, with 837 (68%) in the UAE, according to a report by Ventures Middle East.

Qatar has 190 projects, Saudi Arabia 158 and Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain together have 51.With the UAE as the region’s leader in green buildings, Dubai has one of the region’s more ambitious plans, with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy expecting nearly one quarter - 30,000 of Dubai’s 130,000 buildings - to be energy-efficient by 2030, at a cost of $820 million, according to the report.

Supporting sustainable buildings in the region, Hunter Douglas, an international manufacturer of sun control systems based in the Netherlands, has released the new Screen Nature Ultimetal sun control fabric, which reflects 70% of solar energy that strikes buildings and can substantially reduce energy costs.

In projects with a lot of glass, such as skyscrapers, Screen Nature Ultimetal can cut the amount of energy needed for cooling by 25% by blocking out glare, while minute holes allow for light and openness.

Robin van der Velden, Manager of Window Covering Division, Hunter Douglas Middle East, said: “With GCC countries among the world leaders in focusing on sustainable buildings, skyscrapers in particular require advanced solutions to cope with harsh daylight, while ensuring people have a comfortable climate and visibility. Screen Nature Ultimetal pushes the boundaries of sustainable sun control, combining visual appeal, thermal performance, and environmental properties, while substantially reducing energy consumption.”

Screen Nature Ultimetal, made of glass fiber and coated with a highly-reflective metal layer on the back, is recyclable, fire-safe and free of PVC, odors and toxic vapors.

Wouter Beck, Director of GreenTech, Hunter Douglas, said: “Fiberglass shading fabrics often come with a protective layer of PVC. Despite its strong protective properties, PVC is not the most environment-friendly material in terms of production or recyclability.

“The yarns used in Screen Nature have a patented inorganic coating that offers excellent protection. Screen Nature Ultimetal has two additional advantages: the material is firesafe as well as odorless, due to the absence of softeners.”

Job Hoevenaars, Product Manager, Hunter Douglas, said: “The fabric halves the solar heat gain coming through the window. This means the interior temperature will remain pleasant in summer without much additional cooling.

“This also makes the Screen Nature Ultimetal sun control fabric ideal for projects facing high requirements with regard to Energy Performance Certification and sustainable schemes, such as Breeam and Leed.”

Screen Nature Ultimetal is part of Hunter Douglas’ roller blind range, EOS 500, an innovative, modular roller blind system consisting of 300 interchangeable components.

QFC consultation paper on amendments to regulations

The Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) Authority has issued a public consultation paper, proposing amendments to the QFC Arbitration Regulations.

The changes were made following a review of the new draft Qatari Arbitration Law on Civil and Commercial Matters and other regulations in leading legal jurisdictions and seek to promote the use of arbitration as a form of alternative dispute resolution in the QFC. The paper sheds light on the enhanced proposals to the QFC Arbitration Regulations and aims at consulting with the wider business community.

The QFC Authority is committed to continually reviewing its legislative framework in order to allow new and existing QFC firms to benefit from a strong, transparent legal and regulatory environment.

The proposed amendments are described in detail in the respective consultation paper and its appendix and are available on the QFC Legislation website for feedback purposes: http://www.complinet.com/ qfcra/display/display_main. html?rbid=1557&element_ id=10412 These legislative enhancements are consistent with the QFC Law, the QFC Authority Regulations and the QFC Authority Governance Policy.

Top architect underlines need to integrate Lean Construction and BIM

If a team implemented both Lean principles with BIM technology successfully, they will get the best results, saving time and efforts through the project lifecycle

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean Construction have existed as two different disciplines to improve construction and project management process.

However, recently there have been BIM practitioners who see that these two disciplines have a considerable mutual synergy and that it is more advantageous to implement them jointly in construction projects.

In Qatar, because of the complexity and scale of construction projects and the visionary and sustainable focus from the client side, there is an increasing need to make BIM practitioners aware of principles of Lean Construction and implement them along with BIM. Dawlat El Mosalmi, senior architect and BIM coordinator at ECG (Engineering Consultants Group), who got her master’s degree in BIM/Lean integration, explains why it is important to implement BIM along with Lean management principles on your projects.

What is the link between Lean Construction and BIM? Lean is the elimination of waste from the production cycle and adding value to the process, leading to lower costs, shorter production periods and greater profits resulting in continuous improvement.

Being “lean” involves delivering the right things (including information) to the right place at the right time in the right amount in the right condition.

BIM is the tool to achieve these with high-quality and efficiency (value), reducing time and costs (waste). In other words, Lean is a man-

agement philosophy, while BIM is a technology tool for effective management of project information. So BIM supports Lean and Lean supports BIM. What steps need to be taken to adopt Lean?

In order to adopt Lean principles in any project or any organization, a company must first implement it culturally within its employees by talking about the idea and taking the decision to be a pioneer in the industry.

Then a future vision for development must be put in place, including awareness sessions and training for employees about both the Lean concept and BIM technology.

Then comes walking the Lean talk by evaluating the organization (waste analysis reports), identifying responsibilities by deciding on those responsible for eliminating the waste, identifying priorities and capabilities, prioritizing waste elimination solutions and put them in order according to capabilities, creating a timeline for waste elimination and continuing development of teams.

Implementing Lean principles in both office activities and new projects and following up by auditing and evaluating the organization periodically is mandatory to commit to Lean management techniques and achieve continuous improvement.

What does a Lean and BIM project look like?

A Lean and BIM project is actually a more coordinated project, with higher quality and less waste than other projects. If a team implemented both Lean principles with BIM technology successfully, they will get the best results, saving time and efforts

through the project lifecycle.

Why is it necessary to implement this value combination of Lean and BIM on projects in Qatar?

Just ass BIM became a necessity in construction projects in Qatar and the Gulf area, the Lean management process will also soon be required by owners and clients who are aware of the management tools and who are keen to achieve more with less.

Also, in Qatar’s long-term development plans and as a part of the future vision which shall be achieved in few years, the management processes will be as much important as the technological tools targeting the highest achievements on all levels at all industry fields improving efficiency, quality and profitability.

Have you already worked on projects in Qatar (or other country) implementing this combination of BIM and Lean and what have been the advantages?

We started Lean implementation at ECG’s main office in Egypt a year ago. We started with an awareness session to employees, waste analysis reports and we followed the steps to implement it on different levels; in office activities and also in projects.

On the projects scale, Lean concepts proved that they are the best to be integrated with

BIM in any project achieving the three part goal of better, cheaper, faster projects.

Also, the first BIM project we chose to implement Lean on it was very challenging in its design, resources, and time schedule, but managing BIM implementation by Lean techniques reduced the wastes that can be found in any other project. Now, we are heading to implement Leanthinking in Qatar branch too and be the first to integrate both concepts in Qatar.

Who is implementing Lean and BIM? What are the qualifications needed that enable the professional to implement integrated BIM and Lean principles on construction projects?

Everyone is responsible for BIM and Lean implementation, since the waste in any project in any organization can be found at different departments and can affect the project by direct or indirect ways. However, one can say clearly that the main responsibility of implementing BIM and Lean lies on the top management of any organization since it is their decision in the first place to change and cope with new technologies and processes to continue developing their organizations.

A lean coach or a BIM champion is a unique resource for facilitating the learning of the concept by project

teams. Successful coaches have qualifications like the ability to engage a wide variety of people, ability to work in a team, self-motivation, initiation, ability to learn and leadership and management skills.

Then comes the role of the managers (department managers, BIM managers, IT managers), engineers, the HR and IT departments and even all employees to change their mindset, accept the idea and commit to the new era of change.

To transform an organization to a Lean one, team members must be prepared with an alert and open mind, understand that Lean principles can be applied to any organization and understand that good is the enemy of great.

Could you tell us more about this specialization and why do you see future in this integrated combination?

The future of the construction industry requires the combination and integration of four key functions: Technology (BIM), Process (Lean), Organization and Knowledge, so that today’s options will be tomorrow’s necessity.

BIM has tremendous potential but this potential can be wasted if it is considered that the technology on its own will

provide the answers without managing it through a good suitable process.

Being a senior architect and BIM coordinator, could you please share with us your personal experience on integrated BIM and Lean approach?

BIM and Lean are two main frames that catch the eye and mind of professionals nowadays. As an architect who has been working on BIM projects for several years, I was caught by the Lean concept years ago when I first read about it.

So I started to read more about Lean construction and Lean principles and searched deeply since I found a strong link between Lean concept and BIM implementation process.

I started my thesis for my master’s degree on “BIM implementation in Lean architecture”, and once I finished it, I began to introduce the concept to the industry through the company I am working in and found so much support and enthusiasm to implement the new process.

Also, I have talked about BIM and Lean integration in conferences in Qatar and I have found so much interest from the professionals in the construction industry which makes me quite sure that BIM+Lean will play a great role in the construction industry’s future.

Ashghal holds community event to explain projects in south Qatar

The South Qatar presentation is part of Ashghal’s integrated community outreach program

As part of its commitment to meet the needs of the residents living in the vicinity of its projects and efficiently communicate with them, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP) organized a community event with representatives from various organizations, businesses, schools, and residents in Al Wakra and Mesaieed in the south of Qatar.

The presentation, at Al Wakra Municipality, was aimed at familiarizing the community with various important projects Ashghal is implementing in the south Qatar area.

The community event was attended by representatives of south area projects from the Expressway Program, the Local Roads and Drainage Program and Buildings Projects in addition to representatives from consulting and contracting companies implementing the projects.

A detailed presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the projects being implemented in the south area including their components, stages and features, and what has been achieved so far.

Brochures, including general information on the projects, guidelines to ensure the safety of residents and visitors of the area, as well as contact details for Ashghal and community engagement officers responsible for each project, were handed out.

The event saw excellent interaction from the audience who showed interest in what was being presented, and asked numerous questions that were answered by project engineers.

As part of the event a site tour to the East West Corridor project, part of the Expressway Program, was organized to demonstrate the considerable progress made on the project by Ashghal.

The tour commenced at the Airport Street Interchange and went through to Al Aziziya Extension Interchange, both of which are due for construction as part of the project works. Tour participants also viewed the bridges, col-

The South Qatar presentation is part of Ashghal’s integrated community outreach program. The program includes many community initiatives that aim to enhance communication and cooperation between the authority and the local communities with the aim of gaining understanding and support to minimize the impact of construction works on residents and visitors.

The following is an overview of the projects that are being carried out by the Public Works Authority in the south area: Expressway projects 1) East West Corridor The project includes the construction of 22km dual carriageway with five lanes in each direction and comprises the construction of eight multi-level interchanges.

The East West Corridor begins at the Airport Street, south of the Air Force Roundabout, and runs past Barwa Development to connect with the new Mesaieed to Salwa Road south of the Industrial Area.

The project will provide new links to several main roads and residential areas in the south area, and will connect the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route to the Hamad International Airport. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

2) Al Wakra bypass The project is located to the west of Al Wakra, and includes the construction of an approximately 11Km dual carriageway with five lanes in each direction. It starts at Al Mashaf Road and stretches to Mesaieed Road, creating the main bypass to Al Wakra city.

The project includes the construction of a tunnel and five two-level interchanges that will link the south of Al Wakra city to the Hamad International Airport and New Doha Port.

This project will create a freeflowing road connecting Mesaieed and Al Wakra areas directly to Doha city eliminating the need to travel through Al Wakra city, in addition to

increasing the road capacity.

The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

3) New Orbital Highway and Truck Route – New Doha Port to Orbital Highway (phase 1) The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route project in its four phases encompasses the construction of 190Km main dual carriageway and 22 multi-level interchanges.

The project aims at reducing traffic congestion within Doha city, and separating the heavy trucks from the general traffic flow by providing heavy vehicles with their own separate lanes, allowing traffic to flow freely and safely, improving air quality, and reducing noise.

The Orbital Highway will also facilitate the movement of people and goods around the country.

The first phase of the project is located to the south west of Doha, and includes the approximately 45km of a major new dual carriageway with four lanes in each direction as well as four two-level interchanges linking the New Doha Port to Al Wakra Bypass as well as to the other phases of the project.

The first phase will include the construction of a road linking Mesaieed Road to the East-West Corridor, and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017.

These projects will improve connectivity and enhance traffic safety in the south of Qatar by separating traffic with flyovers, underpasses and tunnels and replacing roundabouts with signalized junctions.

Infrastructure improvements will include storm water drainage networks, treated sewage effluent networks, electrical, telecommunication, and surveillance networks, the implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems, street lighting and dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.

These projects will a create new links to Al Wakra’s heritage sites as well as residential and commercial developments, increase the capacity of roads, and enhance connectivity to the various sports establishments which are currently being developed in preparation for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Development of local roads, infrastructure and drainage projects in local areas 1) Roads and Infrastructure in Wakra West The project includes the development of temporary unpaved local roads and surface water drainage network.

It is divided to three packages: • Package 1 includes 815 plots with a total area of 1,803,906sqm.

• Package 2 includes 424 plots with a total area of 1,268,409sqm.

• Package 3 includes 845 plots with a total area of 932,790sqm.

The project will provide the area with roads and infrastructure, including the construction and maintenance of old and incomplete roads, the construction of pedestrian and cycle paths, installation of street lighting, signage and landscaping.

The project will also include the provision of Treated Sewerage Effluent (TSE) distribution system, storm water collection and disposal network, fuel sewer trunk main and pump station, and an irrigation network. All three packages are expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017.

2) Roads and infrastructure development for government residential division project in south of Wukair The project includes the development of roads and infrastructure of around 4,119 plots of land spread over an area of approximately 13,290,000sqm.

The project is divided to two stages: • T he leveling stage includes leveling the ground and preparation of site which is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.

• T he infrastructure stage includes actual construction works such as developing road and infrastructure in the area with an estimated completion date in the fourth quarter of 2017.

3) Roads and Infrastructure for Wakra north east The project includes the development of roads and infrastructure for around 502 land plots spread over a total area of 678,578sqm.

The infrastructure improvements will include the implementation of surface water drainage, foul sewer services, pedestrian and cycle paths, installation of street lighting, road markings, traffic signs, traffic calming, landscaping and streetscaping. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.

4) Roads and infrastructure for Wakra South The project includes the development of road and infrastructure for around 2512 land plots spread over a total area of 3,157,549sqm.

The project will provide the area with roads and infrastructure, including the development of roads and drainage networks for around 8,270 residents as well as the construction and implementation of pedestrian and cycle paths, traffic calming and traffic management, landscaping and streetscaping and the installation of street lighting, traffic signs, and road markings. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2017.

5) Roads and Infrastructure development for government residential north Al Wukair The project includes the development of roads and infrastructure of around 768 plots of land spread over an area of 2,360,000sqm The project will provide the area with roads and infrastructure, including the construction and implementation of pedestrian and cycle paths, traffic calming and traffic management, landscaping and streetscaping and the installation of street lighting, traffic signs, and road markings. The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017.

6) Roads and Infrastructure for west of Al Mashaf The project is divided into three packages and will provide roads and infrastructure to 2,462 plots of land spread over an area of 7,197,157sqm.

• Package 1 includes 911 plots with a total area of 3,391,324sqm • Package 2 includes 312 plots with a total area of 1,715,833sqm • Package 3 includes 1239 plots with a total area of 2,090,000sqm The project will provide the area with roads and infrastructure, including the provision of Treated Sewerage Effluent (TSE) network, storm water drainage, the construction and implementation of safe pedestrian and cycle paths within an aesthetically pleasant and sustainable landscape, traffic calming and traffic management, landscaping and streetscaping and the installation of street lighting, access roads which will improve traffic flow.

All three packages of the project are expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017.

7) Development of road from Abdul Ghani R/A to Al Mashaf area in Al Wukair This project includes developing the main road from Abdullah Abdul Ghani Round-

about to the Al Mashaf area in Al Wukair. The 3.65km road includes signal intersections, and consists of three lanes in each direction with a median island.

The aim of the new road is to ease congestion in Al Wakra and to connect Abdullah Abdul Ghani roundabout to the Al Mashaf area, easing traffic flow on Al Sadafa Roundabout located in the middle of Wakra City. The project is expected to be completed soon.

Building projects • Educational projects in the south of Qatar Two schools are currently being built in Mesaieed and one school in Al Wukair.

The total construction area of each school is 9,159sqm, and consists of a two-story building that accommodates around 650 students in 25 classes. Each school is equipped with a multipurpose hall as well as science labs and rooms for computer, arts and language.

The main structures surrounded by a series of external adjoining buildings, covered parking lots, an outdoor football, handball and volleyball court.

The schools are designed in line with the Qatari code requirements for persons with special needs, in terms of providing accessibility ramps, restrooms and other amenities.

The schools are eco-friendly and smart buildings that are provided with special equipment to help conserve energy and decrease water consumption.

• Health projects in the south of Qatar 1) Al Wakra Health Centre: It has a ground floor and service areas, spread over an area of 2,813sqm and will include specialized and dental clinics, emergency departments, radiology, pharmacy and laboratory services.

2)Al Mashaf Health Center: It has a basement, a ground floor and an upper floor in addition to service areas spread over an area of 21,153Sqm.

Middle East hospitals to use modular concept design to improve patient experience

Building Healthcare conference to deliberate case study on modular design at Kuwait Cardiac Research and Rehabilitation Centre

Buildings in healthcare should be designed and developed with the principal goal of improving the experience of the main users: patients and healthcare staff. More often than not, while perfectly sterile and healthy environments, healthcare facilities in the GCC can be quite intimidating and unwelcoming for some patients.

According to Agi Architects, who have designed the Kuwait Cardiac Research & Rehabilitation Centre, a healthcare facility should make patients feel welcome and at home by producing a highly developed program and well-designed spatial organization, focusing on the user’s wellbeing.

Centre was purposefully developed to provide daylight, natural ventilation, and pleasant views, in order to contribute to the user’s comfort and health.

This was created by including a series of courtyards of varying sizes that are incorporated in the building at different levels. The relationships created between public and private spaces through well-organized circulation paths help facilitate the operation of the building and give it a more natural atmosphere for both patients and staff.

The interior of the centre is

designed like a miniature city with different scales and hierarchies. The ‘main streets’ are the corridors where patients can be assisted in different receptions; and the main waiting areas are like a square with direct view to the main courtyards. The

interior gives the feeling of being ‘outdoors’. The patients are received in a “living room” and addressed by a doctor privately and in each scenario maximum privacy and confidence with doctors is maintained.

“All modules have a small court-

yard to provide light, natural ventilation and privacy. Services like swimming pool, gym and track are strategically located in the best locations of the ‘city’ with direct view to the sea (the building is located on the beach). Those spaces are

used to stress tests / rehabilitation, where we propose big windows and double free height to reinforce the “outside” sensation. With a northern orientation these spaces will have the best light,” commented Dr Abulhasan.

QATAR FOUNDATION: MAKING STRIDES IN DELIVERING DIGNITY FOR ALL MIGRANT WORKERS

A

s Qatar’s construction sector continues to expand ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the country’s demand for international labour is expected to remain high.

Figures published in September 2014 show that the total number of migrant workers living in the Gulf state has now surpassed 1.6m, with at least half a million estimated to be employed in Qatar’s construction sector.

However, in recent years, Qatar’s sizeable migrant workforce has been the subject of intense international media scrutiny, amid allegations of mistreatment.

Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) is contributing its expertise and resources to efforts to protect the human rights of all workers in Qatar and the wider Gulf region, as part of the organisation’s wider mission to unlock human potential. Some 20,000 construction workers are currently employed on QF’s various capital projects and it remains committed to enshrining the rights of these workers in a comprehensive and transparent manner as part of its continued support of the Qatar National Vision 2030. QF places a huge emphasis on maintaining health and safety on its building sites and in June 2015 one contractor, MIDMAC, was acknowledged for completing 21 million consecutive man-hours without loss-time incidents (LTI) on QF’s new Head-

quarters and Strategic Studies Center. In the construction industry, LTI is defined as an on-site incident which results in a fatality, permanent disability or time lost from work.

Commenting on this tremendous achievement, Engineer Jassim Telefat, Group Executive Director of Qatar Foundation Capital Projects and Facilities Management, said: “At Qatar Foundation we believe that dignified living and working conditions are absolutely essential elements to unlocking human potential. In order to meet these values and principles, we are ensuring that all construction work on our projects is carried out to agreed international health and safety standards.

This is a cause that we are fully committed to and one that is beginning to show real benefits for the highly-valued individuals employed on our projects.”

QF’s health and safety achievements at its new Headquarters and Strategic Studies Center complement wider efforts by the organisation to holistically improve its employees living and working conditions as part of its Migrant Worker Welfare initiative, a project that has also been alternatively named ‘Karama’, or ‘dignity’ in Arabic, due to its holistic approach. Over the last two years Karama projects have played an very important role in improving the living standards of migrant workers in Qatar. Amongst Karama’s most notable achieve-

ments are the Qatar Foundation Mandatory Standards for Worker Welfare. Published in April 2013, this 50-page, comprehensive document combines Qatari Labour Law with international best practice and is based upon a holistic and principled approach that looks to safeguard the rights of workers from the moment they are recruited until they return to their home countries. From January 2014 the Standards have been included in all new contracts on QF projects. Shortly after the Mandatory Standards were published, QF set up its Migrant Welfare Department (MWD) to monitor contractor adherence to the standards through regular assessments, audits and inspections. In addition, QF’s Migrant Welfare Department has several other responsibilities including liaison with other key stakeholders in Qatar and across the Gulf region. As part of this latter role, QF recently hosted a 5-day regional training programme in Doha that aimed to spread awareness of the laws and mechanisms that can protect migrant workers employed across the Middle East.

Co-hosted with Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar (GU-Q), the course was held at Education City at the end of last month and attracted over 40 of the region’s leading human rights advocates – including representatives from the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), the Ministry of

Labour and NGOs from a total of nine Asian and African countries. Praised by participants as both ‘informative’ and ‘engaging’, the programme curriculum was jointly-developed by Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) – a regional network of organisations committed to enhancing the lives of migrant workers, and the Diplomacy Training Programme (DTP) – an influential Australian NGO whose aim is to advance human rights across Asia through the provision of quality education and training.

Amongst those in attendance included representatives from high-profile NGOs in Bahrain, Lebanon and Kuwait, including Mr Salah Al-Hassan, a legal researcher for the Kuwait Society for Human Rights. Expressing his gratitude to QF and QU-Q for hosting the course, Mr AlHassan said: “We believe this training programme has been hugely beneficial and valuable for us as an organisation. This is a unique initiative because it teaches participants both practical and academic skills as well as the key international laws that protect migrant workers. Furthermore, by bringing together some of this region’s leading NGOs, the programme encourages greater dialogue between major stakeholders in countries across the Middle East.” Another delegate, Ms Helen de Oliveira, General Secretary for the Bahrain-based NGO Migrant Workers Protection Society, underlined the political

and cultural significance of the programme by saying: “I think Qatar Foundation’s hosting of this training programme is a very important signal to the rest of the world because it shows that there is an intent within the Gulf region to better understand the position of migrant workers and to search for practical solutions that can enhance their living conditions.

I have really enjoyed the chance to speak to others in this region that are doing similar humanitarian work and I feel it has been very nourishing for us all to share experiences and some of the lessons we have learned. ” The Diplomacy Training Programme underlines QF’s status as one of the major stakeholders within the Gulf region committed to enhancing worker welfare and to tackling the root and branch circumstances that give rise to welfare issues. As part of this ongoing process, QF commissioned its Migrant Labour Recruitment to Qatar report. The 160-page document, published in June 2014, addresses many of the current issues surrounding low-skilled migrant workers’ rights and looks specifically at the recruitment process in so-called ‘origin countries’, including the Philippines, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Amongst its key findings is that the majority of migrant workers from these countries arrive in Qatar in serious debt, having paid huge fees to recruitment agents.

Whilst this process is illegal un-

der Qatar Labour Law, the report acknowledges how widespread this practice is and the serious difficulties in enforcing this law overseas.

However, in an effort to try and identify recruitment agencies that do not charge fees, in recent times the Migrant Welfare Department has made trips to the Philippines, Bangladesh and Nepal and QF plans to add some much-needed transparency to the recruitment process and to compile a list of preferred overseas agencies that do not charge fees to workers. Whilst these efforts are bringing about progress on the complex issue of worker welfare, Mr Mohammed Bakhamis, QF’s Director of Health, Safety, Environment & Migrant Welfare, emphasises that there is still a long road ahead.

“For Qatar Foundation to do this alone, will be far less impactful, which is why the Migrant Labour Recruitment to Qatar report identifies the need for strengthening bilateral agreements, as well as international processes and standards that will remove loop holes and areas for exploitation,” he says.

“However, Qatar Foundation is respected because of its unique position, and has a strong relationship with its government. So if we can be the driver of best practice and continual communication with our stakeholders, then we are one step closer to fulfilling our mission.”

Concrete standardization is Concrete demand vital for quality construction set to zoom in GCC

I

n this exclusive interview with Construction Sites (CS), Rabih Fakih, founder and Managing Director of Grey Matters Consultancy, a group that conducts third-party assessments, technical control, inspections, training and certifications on concrete technology, reveals that concrete standardization is the key toward quality construction.

The fifth version of Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS2014) has introduced a range of noticeable improvements to the section 05 Concrete What is the importance of ready-mix concrete certification for the construction industry in Qatar?

With the significant growth in the ready-mix concrete industry, it is vital for production facilities along with personnel working in this domain receiving certification. Mega-projects with high concrete specifications underline the importance of having the concrete being adequately produced and consistently delivered with same quality on time. This requires facilities that are certified with personnel competent to operate.

Qatar works in a close collaboration with the leading international certification bodies to develop the certification programs applicable for the local construction sector. What are the results of this collaboration?

Qatar is open to international certifications through the direct collaboration with international bodies via the Qatar Standards or indirectly via the international firms that are present and operating on major projects. As a result, a dynamic improvement in the quality and the quantity of concrete produced has been taking place.

The Ministry of Environment has launched the fifth version of Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS 2014) that lays down the criteria of high quality in all sectors, notably in readymix. What are the major changes for the QCS2014 concrete chapter comparing to the previous version?

A: The QCS2014 has considerably witnessed modifications in the concrete section such as specifications of aggregates, durability of concrete, classifications of concrete grades and others. In addition, a checklist

Previous construction booms have seen the supply of concrete unable to meet demand, leading to spiraling prices and delayed projects. Discussions on the availability and reliability of current concrete technologies are set to take place at the International Concrete Technology Forum, at Middle East Concrete.

“Developers in the GCC have implemented the latest and most advanced technologies of ready-mixed concrete in the construction of high rise buildings and iconic structures,” said Ihab Bassiouni, UAE Country Manager for Grey Matters Consultancy, and advisory board member for Middle East Concrete.

“High performance concrete has been used with emphasis on concrete placeability, strength and durability,” he said.

“More attention shall be paid to the impact of concrete on the environment where new sustainable solutions, in terms of concrete materials and production facilities, shall be adopted in order to cope with the rising trend towards sustainable developments in the region,” Bassiouni added.

has been amended with regard to the plant certification requirements. Moreover, one part for personnel qualifications and certifications has been added to the section 05 Concrete. Some of those certifications are said to be optional now and are to be compulsory with time. Personnel that are directly involved in concreting on site should be qualified and ultimately certified to cope with the high requirements and standards of Qatari projects.

What are the compulsory certifications for the readymix sector in Qatar?

So far, it has been compulsory for concrete ready-mix facilities to be certified by QCS. NRMCA plant and truck certification can work as replacement of the QCS certification during the renewal period of the latter. There are no compulsory certifications for personnel working in concrete.

What are the other important certifications for ready-mix industry which are optional, though yet important for the industry to your opinion?

National Ready-Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) has recently launched a new certification entitled (Quality Concrete Certification). It covers intensively the technical and operational aspects of the concrete ready-mix industry. It

is anticipated to be of a major requirement in the future for all consultants.

In addition, there are other certifications that are related to the environment and sustainability that NRMCA has launched few years ago such as Green Star and Concrete Sustainable Plant certifications.

The ready-mix companies in Qatar are among the first in the world to be certified by leading certifying bodies, although the certificates cover concrete and batch plants. What about the personnel? Are there mandatory certification for the ready-mix sector personnel in Qatar? What are the advantages of this certification?

Unfortunately, there are no mandatory certifications for the personnel. This is a very delicate subject that has adversely affected the quality of the concrete produced and delivered to the projects. It is commonly practiced that most of the technicians on site have no background in concrete nor hold any certifications in this regard. As a result, millions of cubic meters of concrete, worth hundreds of millions of Qatari riyals, are subject to be tested by unskilled/uncertified technicians. Supervision at production and site should be tight.

After all, it is essential to deploy

qualified personnel and set continuous training programs and minimum certification requirements to evaluate the quality control levels.

You have recently launched SirCrete campaign in the region. Could you evolve more on it?

Grey Matters is proud to launch the first campaign in the region to provide everyone in the concrete construction industry an opportunity to be certified and thus contribute in everyone’s professional development. We have noticed in the last few years that employers are not ready to invest

concrete technologies such as “Shotcrete” super high strength concrete have not yet been introduced into the region.

Talking about the burgeoning concrete market in the region, Adel Taybah, Plants and Works Manager for Ready Mix Beton and advisory board member for Middle East Concrete, said on the sidelines of Middle East Concrete event last November: “The growing concrete industry in the region continues to stay ahead of the trends, aiming at ensuring energy and cost efficiency, as well as contributing to sustainable structures by adopting green technologies.”

Taybah added: “Though cement markets faced tough times recently amid the slowdown, the demand has well and truly returned, along with demand for more advanced concrete technology to support the region’s megaprojects.”

With sustainability a key issue for cement production given its high pollution output, one of the main panels at the event will review the latest low carbon-emitting concrete innovations.

Who has to be the agent

of change in ready-mixed concrete sector: regulatory authorities, contractors, consultants or personnel?

Unfortunately, the changes in concrete specifications or requirements are still not regulated by one body or authorities.

QCS2014 is the main national code to be followed in main projects; still, we have witnessed several projects that owner or designer specifies different specifications that sometimes contradict with the common practices of QCS2014. However, the general trend is towards having QCS2014 as the main specifications reference.

Internal quality audits are conducted at each of the company’s facilities semi-annually and these audits address multiple aspects which are evaluated so that they conform to the K & H Ready Mix Quality Management System.

Equipment and facilities K & H Ready Mix has two wet concrete batching plants with a fully automatic and computerized control system with capacity of 200 cubic meters per hour and both are equipped with a water chiller and ice plant.

The first plant, Al Kifah batching plant, has a mixing capacity of 3 m³ per batch and at 80 m³ per hour.

The second batching plant, which uses a WETBETON 120, has a mixing speed capacity of 120m³ per hour.

The company is able to transport ready-mix concrete in three different sized quantities as it has transit mixers in 6.5, 7, and 9 cubic meter capacity.

It uses both Putzmeister and Schwing concrete pumps and can service heights that range in length from 36m upto 58m.

A laboratory is situated inside the plant which is supervised and managed by a highly-qualified technical team. Chemical quality tests are done at an independent laboratory as per QCS requirements.

Both are dependent upon the other in the performance of their duties.

“A customer of both the driver and the dispatcher is the accounting person responsible for invoicing.

“A higher than average degree of alertness and concern for product quality are required of our ready-mixed truck drivers, particularly when working at our

batching plants. It is their job to take the materials weighed into their trucks and produce wellmixed concrete.

“They are able to use judgment in adjusting the consistency of the concrete to meet the job specifications. On the job site they protect our company’s interests by carefully recording additions of water and other materials to the concrete, and noting any observed malpractice in sampling, placing, handling, and testing.”

Tests frequency “The accuracy and reliability of our (quality control) tests results, in representing the concrete tested, is largely dependent upon the frequency of tests we perform,” says the official.

“The frequency of our quality control testing may be a function of many factors like, project requirements; evaluation of testing by others, component materials analysis, mix consistency and performance, plant standard deviation; and even weather considerations.

“Project requirements often dictate the frequency of tests performed by the independent testing agency.

“We ensure that the sampling and testing of freshly-mixed concrete is done in accordance with the QCS 2010.”

Additional hardened concrete tests, which may be specified or used by K & H Ready Mix, include: • Cement content • Chloride content • Rapid indication of chloride ion penetrability • Shrinkage • Water permeability

• Water absorption • Sulphate content Customer service “At K & H Ready Mix, we find that complaint management is especially challenging for our industry since complaints may be received by virtually any employee,” the official points out.

“Complaints are taken very seriously. The origin of the complaint or inquiry may be from any number of sources, including K&H Ready Mix personnel, the customer, the owner, an end-user, etc.

“In order to capture these complaints we have centralized responsibility for monitoring complaints with our customer service representative. We have a ‘complaint’ form on a small pad which we provide to all employees.

“Our customer service representative receives the completed ‘complaint’ forms and immediately directs a copy of the form to the proper individual for resolution. We emphasize the importance of promptly acting on even the smallest of complaints.”

Rabban Readymix’s sustainability programs get Green-Star’ boost The Rabban Group, founded in 1964, has grown out of a well-established business in pearl trading and other interests.

The group has been involved in the construction sector, real estate industry and consumer goods since then and is enjoying continued good growth into the third generation.

The company was founded by the late Khalid Al Rabban and is now headed by his son Mohammed Al Rabban.

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) has awarded NRMCA Green-Star certification to six Rabban Readymix plants.

The NRMCA Green-Star Program has been designed by the Environmental Task Group of the Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee (NRMCA-OES), in collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency, as a means to support the efforts of the ready mixed concrete industry towards environmental excellence through the recognition of the use of a Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a tool for environmental benchmarking and continual improvement.

By implementing the NRMCA Green-Star program, the Rabban Readymix company is committed to assess the environmental impact of its activities and products to base its environmental management schemes and to reduce their effects through the establishment of appropriate objectives and targets. “Having implemented the NRMCA Green-Star program, we are now one of the few readymix companies in Qatar to have this certification,” says Owner Mohammed Khalid Al Rabban٫ “With this certification, we are committed to assess the environmental impact of our activities and products and to implement sound environmental management programs,” he notes.

Rabban Readymix has a fully integrated ISO management system and NRMCA plant and truck certification which makes them one of the only companies operating in Qatar with both ISO and NRMCA. This clearly distinguishes them from their competition in the construction industry.

Rabban has never been a company to rest on its laurels and it has identified a need in the market.

“There is a requirement for large mobile concrete pumps to service sites, an ever increasing demand from contractors as the projects are often inaccessible or have high pour rates,” says General Manager Martyn Hinds.

“Supporting our own expansion plans, we have recently purchased two new 63m Putzmeister mobile concrete pumps which have now been added to our fleet points out.

“Combining these with the acquisition of additional tower placing booms strengthens our position in the market and ensures we retain

at the cutting edge of excellence in service,” he says.

“Rabban has also developed a new concrete technology research and design laboratory at its Mesaieed plant. It is a state-of-the art set up that has been established to identify potential new materials as the anticipated shortage of raw materials is well documented.

“We need to provide a greater degree of innovation in the field of mix technology and design.”

Since the second quarter of 2012, growth in the construction industry has been strong, and in real terms, construction output has been expanding.

With the state’s five-year development plan, the sector is quite confident of the government’s support with the budget allocation for development projects touching QR455 ($125 billion).

However, that budget period will be coming to an end quite soon, as the allocation was for 2011–2016. Of the total, QR236.6 billion ($65 billion) will be spent on infrastructure projects and the remaining QR218.4 billion ($60 billion) on residential, commercial and LNG construction projects.

The infrastructure spending includes investments by Barwa and Qatar Diar for residential and business construction projects and also by the Qatar Foundation with Sidra Hospital and Education City in health and education.

Despite the continuing challenges with raw materials supply, this does mean that there are a diverse range of projects that need concrete readymix. However, as this budget period comes to a close it is expected that construction growth will continue to be driven by the Qatar National Vision 2030, through which the country looks to become a developed nation by diversifying its economy, achieving sustainable development and providing a high standard of living for its population.

Commenting on the buoyancy in the sector, Martyn Hinds notes that it has been

an extremely competitive market for the last few years.

“In recent months we have seen the start of the government’s investment in infrastructure really starting to take off. Qatar Rail has awarded its Metro projects and these packages of work have formed part of a considerable increase in demand for ready mixed concrete.”

It is these kinds of projects that will be looking at the “green bona fides” of Readymix companies. With its recent NRMCA Green-Star certification, and being an NRMCA member, Rabban is well placed to be able to provide the technology and expertise needed to be a leader in the production of green cement.

According to Miguel BlancoCarrasco, Fridolin Hornung and Nadja Ortner, in their paper delivered in 2010 entitled, “Qatar: Green Concrete Technologies - Towards a Sustainable Concrete Industry in Qatar”, technology is pacing the way for concrete to leave behind its image of being a polluting material to become an indispensable element in sustainable construction projects. For instance, a recent study regarding the installation of railway sleepers has shown that concrete sleepers produce six times less GHG emissions than timber ones.

“This is of foremost relevance in Qatar and the GCC where timber is a scarce commodity and the prospect of a joint GCC railway system will demand the installation of a considerable number of sleepers.”

The year 2014 was a challenging year, according to the company.

“It saw us struggling with a lack of volume for the main part of the year, we really only saw the first signs of continued progress from Q3/ Q4 onwards,” says Hinds.

“Like many companies in the sector, we also faced challenges.”

Whilst volumes started to improve, the pressure on margins remained very heavy.

A backlog of projects developed in the last few years and these have been priced at tender rates, reflecting recessionary times.

As a result fears exist from the contractors’ standpoint about whether they can actually deliver projects within budget.

Hinds says that they did anticipate that the increased volumes in 2015 would be sustained and that would nudge the selling prices upwards despite the increased material costs. He predicts that the price of raw materi-

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is expected to be a key driver for industry growth over the forecast period, with a number of infrastructure projects expected to be undertaken by the government in preparation for the event.

The government has already started spending the planned QR580.8 billion ($160 billion) on these projects, representing 40% of its 2012–2016 infrastructure projects budget.

Martyn Hinds is cautious about how it will affect the sector and the region and says: “For us here in Qatar we can at last start to develop a strategy for the future.

Clearly, neighboring Dubai will also experience an upturn with the Expo 2020 award.”

ulf Readymix was founded in 2005 with one site in the Doha Industrial Area and has since expanded to become one of the fastest growing readymix companies in Qatar. The company now has four sites, each with two batching plants, a fleet of some 65 truck mixers, 14 concrete pumps plus fully equipped labs at each site location.

Gulf Readymix has a fleet of 65 truck mixers with the majority having 9m3 capacity drums. In addition the company has 14 mobile concrete pumps with boom lengths from 34-58 metres. Getting hotel acoustics right

Providing a good acoustic environment within a hotel doesn’t stop at the design or construction stage and it’s not something that can’t be improved over time

By Mark Puljizevic Al Mana group Working as a building acoustics consultant in Qatar, I often find myself playing a role in raising awareness of good acoustic design and its benefits in healthcare facilities, schools, stadiums, offices and residential buildings. The most challenging part of it is providing tangible evidence of those benefits to clients whose conversation frequently turns to income and profit.

One sector where relations between good acoustic design and profit are quite straightforward is in the hotel industry.

Major hotel groups are quite aware how poor acoustic design of a single room can turn your profits upside down.

Although acoustics is recognized as important and usually tackled throughout the design stage, it doesn’t mean most hotels are immune to the “empty room syndrome”. Browsing through guests’ feedbacks, complaints related to noise and poor privacy levels within guestrooms usually top the charts.

Work on a number of hotels being built to boost Qatar’s tourism sector and satisfy capacities required for the 2022 World Cup is going on at pace.

Hotels in Doha are rather special compared to other parts of

the world as they virtually represent focal points of Qatar’s social life, for both locals and expats.

Either looking for a quite place to take a morning coffee and read newspaper, dine with the family, have a business meeting, organize a wedding event, relax in the spa, take a hairdresser appointment or just have fun with friends, hotels are the place to be.

Lured by luxurious lobbies, magnificent restaurants, grand ball rooms, seaside shisha-bars, sports facilities, beaches and some of the best night clubs in the Middle East, hotels in Qatar are regularly jam-packed and paying a visit to enjoy their facilities without a reservation can often turn disappointing.

Despite numerous amenities, at the heart of every hotel are its guestrooms and suites where high levels of privacy and peaceful environment are of the utmost importance.

Reconciling all the hotel’s contents and integrating various noisy and quiet areas under one roof proves very challenging even for the most experienced developers.

It is indeed very rare to find a hotel without at least few rooms being exposed to high noise levels and unaffected by guests’ complaints.

Key topics when discussing hotel acoustic design are: • High sound insulation • Low noise levels High sound insulation between guestrooms and especially between quiet and noisy areas such as ball rooms or night clubs should be the starting point of every hotel’s design.

Being able to understand conversation in the neighboring guestrooms or being annoyed by a loud music throughout the night can turn anyone’s hotel stay into a nightmare.

Partitions and building constructions of high sound insulation rate, such as solid concrete walls and double dry-wall partitions, should be favored; paying attention to constructive details such as interface with the facade or penetrations due to various building services (air-

conditioning, ventilation, fire fighting, etc.).

Noise levels originating either from air-conditioning systems or nearby traffic have to be kept low, in order to allow a good night’s rest. All our senses calm down during nights and we become very susceptible to noise.

Even the slightest increase in noise levels can prove extremely disturbing and cause serious sleep deprivation. Noise is usually one of the most frequent source of complains among guests.

Installation of quiet air-conditioning units and selection of double glazed facade systems stand almost as a standard these days.

Providing a good acoustic environment within a hotel doesn’t stop at the design or construction stage and it’s not some-

thing that can’t be improved over time. Identifying strengths and weaknesses of existing acoustic environment is paramount for any building, especially for a hotel where it makes all the difference between an empty and an occupied room, leading to guests’ satisfaction.

That’s why I always encourage hotel operators to conduct acoustic surveys in order to identify potential weaknesses and rectify them in the most feasible manner.

One of Qatar’s most beautiful examples when it comes to acoustics is the Mövenpick Tower & Suites in West Bay, which is a pioneer of acoustic surveys and interior environment quality assessment in general.

The hotel’s management, always striving to raise the level of their service, recognizes the

importance of hotel’s acoustic environment and has warmly welcomed the first acoustic survey undertaken in Qatar.

The hotel’s guestrooms, spa, lobby, restaurants and other areas have been thoroughly examined in terms of sound insulation and noise levels.

The hotel has been rated very high in its acoustic environment quality.

Although sound insulation between rooms has proved to be very high and noise levels rather low, certain valuable recommendations to facility managers have been given, enabling further improvement of hotel’s acoustic environment.

I would strongly encourage all others to follow these footsteps and consider acoustics as important as energy consumption, air quality and hygiene.

Adding colors to sustainability

The new colored solar glass will allow architects, designers and developers to overcome the aesthetic challenges of solar panels while increasing the energy efficiency of their buildings Qatar is considered as the fastest-growing solar energy market in the GCC. Most of the firms dealing with solar energy in Qatar are homegrown with an extensive knowledge of the local demand.

The total installed solar capacity in Qatar now is about 4MW, though it could be much higher if the producers of solar energygenerating panels have taken an innovative approach to designing solutions with a high level of architectural integration, according to Rafic Hanbali, managing partner of Emirates Insolaire, a subsidiary of Dubai Investment.

The standard black and blue solar panels that clash with design aesthetics of buildings in Qatar will soon give way to colored solar glass, according to Hanbali.

are capable of generating energy and enhancing the design appeal and aesthetics of each building and skyscraper’s facade in the region.

Qatar’s construction sector is showing quite a lot of interest in the breakthrough concept. The innovative product has received an overwhelming response in Qatar.

“Some of our prospective clients in Qatar are looking forward to installing the technology in their upcoming entrepreneurial and industrial buildings,” said Hanbali.

Until now all existing solar panels in the world have been either black or dark blue, where one can apparently see busbars and cells on the panels and had very limited applications in buildings.

Such transparent solar panels, because of their poor aesthet-

ics, cannot be put on facades.

“Our patented multi-colored solar panels named Kromatix have been developed over nine years. It is the top level architectural solar integration called Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV),” Hanbali said.

Each colored panel with Kromatix technology can generate above 150 watts per square meter on roofs, or above 110 watts per square meter on facades. About 2,000 panels on one building, roof and facades are capable of generating above 350kW. A standard-size building equipped with the technology, according to Hanbali, can meet up to 50% of its daily energy needs. However, the ratio may vary from building to building depending on its type and energy requirements.

Hanbali said: “The products

are tailor-made and bears low maintenance cost. During the manufacturing process, panels are specially treated so that they accumulate or stick less dust. As a result they need to be cleaned after a about two months, which is much less frequent compared to conventional panels that require cleaning every two weeks.”

The Kromatix facades that come with a replacement guarantee for 25 years, costs about 10-12% higher compared to conventional ones, but given the fact that it saves up to 50% of electricity bills for the owner of a building during its life, the product is becoming increasingly popular.

“Our breakthrough glass is optimized for photovoltaic modules and solar thermal collectors and we see a massive growth potential in the Gulf.

We expect sales in excess of 50,000 square metres for colored panels and photovoltaic models during 2015,” said Hanbali. Kromatix, as the world`s first effective colored solar panel glass, represents a paradigm shift for solar panel integration.

Sustainable goals for infrastructure MEED’s Qatar Transport Forum 2015 all set for September Over the past few years, Qatar has witnessed a rapid development from small settings to a bigger metropolitan style.

Last year, infrastructure projects worth over $65 billion were announced. Ashghal has declared projects worth $9 billion in one year.

With another year left for Qatar’s National Development Strategy deadline, it’s a good time to pause and assess the quality of the infrastructure and whether it is in line with the sustainable goals of the strategy.

At a recent presentation, research specialist at Qatar Green Building Council, Hamoda Youssef, explored infrastructure developments in Qatar and how sustainable they were.

Youssef pointed out that since you couldn’t manage what you couldn’t measure, tools were needed to measure the quality of infrastructure.

Certifying green neighborhoods or green cities is one approach to measure sustain-

ability of infrastructure.

Aside from certification, green infrastructure starts from master planning. Parks and open spaces should be looked at as part of the infrastructure: it’s not only roads, power and sewerage networks.

How the infrastructure responds to the weather is another way to measure the sustainability of the infrastructure. “Life-cycle of infrastructure is longer than that of buildings. To make sure infrastructure is durable, it should respond to local weather conditions.”

Youssef said that looking into the water cycle was another way to measure the sustainability of the infrastructure.

In Qatar for instance, 95% of water used is desalinated water. To minimize the environmental footprint of that, low-impact development techniques should be used, like utilizing more native plants for example.

Youssef warned that the huge

losses in the infrastructure of water networks were something that needed to be rectified.

He pointed to the New Doha Port as an example of projects that work well with nature.

“It has good environmental aspects and good respect of the environment,” he added.

Utilizing more transportation is a good way for a city’s infrastructure to be green, but Youssef said it needed to be more affordable.

He explained that affordable transportation and design of road networks to be more walkable, by providing shading for example, were two ways to decrease the city’s CO2 emissions.

Lastly, Youssef said that going for renewable energy was another option for infrastructure to be green, adding that in Qatar this was being done in a proper way.

All of these approaches would contribute in reaching one goal: having a healthy city.

AEB receives ISO and OHSAS certifications

The Arab Engineering Bureau’s (AEB’s) construction supervision department has received ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001 certifications, the international standards for quality, environmental and HSE management. “The receipt of such important certifications highlights AEB’s commitment to ensure the highest quality construction supervision management and HSE services to its clients,” according to a release issued by the company.

Speaking to Construction Sites on the occasion, AEB’s Group CEO and Chief Architect, Ibrahim Mohamed Jaidah, said: “We already had a comprehensive system in place since five years for the construction supervision unit at AEB. However, we thought it’s about time to have a third party to confirm our procedures. After only two months we were able to acquire the certificate, since the procedures had already been in place”.

Jaidah pointed out that as more complex and larger scale projects got underway in Qatar, such certificates had become a necessity.

“Today projects are more complicated, bigger in size with bigger budgets. Working on these projects requires more accurate procedures.

Through this certificate we can confirm to our clients that we have a certified process,” he said. The certificates highlight

AEB’s commitment to workers safety. “Safety of workers is becoming ever more important,” Jaidah said. “We have recently finished 13 million hours of work at the Festival City project without any accidents. The presence of this certificate emphasizes to our clients that we have reached the highest standards in safety procedures,” he added. As a Qatar-based company with international expertise and projects, AEB hands over around 25 projects annually.

Samer Hudhud, Chief Projects Officer, construction supervision department at AEB, said that this was exactly why the ISO certificates were essential for the company. “With this pace of work, in the absence of an accurate system, it would be difficult to operate efficiently,” he said. “When you work with a number of architects and engineers on large-scale projects, as a manager, you can’t interfere daily to make sure everything is going smoothly.

That’s why having a procedure in place makes sure we maintain quality throughout all of our operations,” said Hudhud.

“We also have an internal audit team that makes sure all of our sub units are following the ISO procedures,” he added. Developed by International Organization for Standardization, ISO 9001:2008 is a world-recognized standard for quality management. ISO 14001:2004 is best practice standard related

to environmental management. And OHSAS 18001 is widely-recognized occupational health and safety management system.

As part of the five-month long certification process, the AEB construction supervision management system, which has been in operation since 2010, was audited in two stages. The first stage verified AEB construction supervision department compliance against ISO requirements and the second stage verified actual compliance of the projects against IMS Manual and Procedures.

Complete on-site audit was undertaken by ApPlus+Velosi.

ApPlus+Velosi Country manager Terry Armes handed over the certificates to Jaidah at a ceremony held at Crowne Plaza Business Park Event Center.

“Arab Engineering Bureau has 49 years of work experience in Qatar’s construction market and currently employs 700 construction professionals,” Jaidah said at the ceremony.

“The Construction Supervision Department comprises 300 staff who are highly qualified architects, engineers, and project managers,” he noted.

“The constriction supervision department at AEB hands over 25 projects annually, with a handover almost every other week. The ISO certification is of paramount importance to the operations of our construction supervision department,” Jaidah said t the ceremony.

Tenders Conditions: - You can get a copy of the documents of this tender / tenders of the Central Tenders Committee during official hours, against payment of the tender documents witch you can retrieve it.

- Must be accompanied with the tender a letter of guarantee bank / certified check from a bank operating in the State of Qatar, as indicated above for a period of temporary deposit on 120.

- The offer must be valid for a period of ninety days from the date of the opening of envelopes.

- Will be the last date for submission of tenders is twelve o’clock on the morning of the closure, and will not pay attention to any tender received after the deadline.

- Tenders deposited in the box of the Central Tenders Committee, located in Muntazah - Rawabi Street, to be inside the stamped and sealed envelopes and addressed to the Chairman of the Tenders Committee competent (central / local) showing the number, type of the tender and the subject.
