Qatar to build Lusail tower shaped like desert flower

Qatar will construct two buildings designed by late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, including a tower shaped like a desert flower close to the site of the 2022 soccer World Cup final. H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani commissioned Hadid in 2013 to create the structures, one a 38-story hotel in the form of a hyacinth and featuring a nine-pointed base to shield visitors from the searing Gulf sun. HE Sheikh Mohammed’s Al Alfia Holding said in a statement it would construct the tower “designed in response to current and future environmental challenges” by 2020 in the city of Lusail, 23km north of Doha. “With truly inspirational public spaces and atrium, 120 unique residences and 200 hotel rooms of Zaha Hadid’s unmistakable signature, we celebrate her remarkable legacy and continue Lusail City’s commitment to creating the region’s most sustainable, interconnected community,” said Sheikh Mohammed, Chairman of Al Alfia Holding. “We often look at nature’s systems when we work to create environments, at her unrivaled logic and coherence,” Hadid, who died in March, had said of the project. The formal composition of Hadid’s design for the Lusail tower has been inspired by the structure of the Desert Hyacinth; a flowering plant native to the landscapes and coastlines of the Arabian Gulf.

The nine-pointed form of the building’s podium surrounds a central core defined by the interwoven fluid geometries of the hyacinth. A filigreed mashrabiya facade envelops the building to reduce solar gain. Fluidity is embedded within the region’s architectural heritage and traditions. Continuous calligraphic and geometric patterns flow from domes to ceilings, ceilings to walls, walls to floors, establishing seamless relationships and blurring distinctions between architectural elements.

Zaha Hadid developed this historical understanding of the region’s architecture in a contemporary interpretation evolving from her research into natural systems of organization and structure, as well as applying the possibilities achieved through advancements in design, construction and material technologies to deliver workable solutions for the 21st century.

Qatar inaugurates two projects in Morocco Qatar has inaugurated two projects in the Moroccan city of Errachidia on the directives of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani to support the socio-cultural, sports and industrial sectors in the north African country.

The projects were implemented under the Private Engineering Office’s supervision. The projects were inaugurated by the Governor of Errachidia, Draa Tafilalet Province, Mohamed Fenaid, Qatar’s Ambassador to Morocco, Abdullah Falah Al Dossari, and the Director-General of the International Foundation for Wildlife Research, Hamad Misfer Al Hajri, in the presence of a number of the province’s officials. The first project includes a social and cultural center as well as a sports facility in Errachidia on an area of 3,650 square meters, designed to accommodate young people and develop their abilities so that they can contribute to the progress of the society in various fields. The second project includes a center for traditional industries in an area of 3,091 square meters and consists of three floors with a basement car parking. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador Al Dossari said that the two projects were built on the directives of HH the Emir. He pointed to the importance of these projects and their role in the development of society in this region.

Qatari fund buys $2.5 billion Singapore tower from BlackRock Qatar Investment Authority, the country’s sovereign wealth fund, has agreed to buy BlackRock Inc’s Asia Square Tower 1 in Singapore’s central business district for $2.5 billion (QR9.1 billion), Bloomberg reported. Qatar will purchase the office tower in the central business district in the largest single-tower sale in the region, according to a joint statement from Qatar Investment Authority and BlackRock. The building has been on the market since last year after bids by a consortium of Norway’s sovereign wealth fund and CapitaLand Ltd., Singapore’s largest developer, and rival bids by ARA Asset Management Ltd failed to clinch the deal. BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, had to settle for a lower price than it had originally anticipated for the 43-story tower, whose tenants include Citigroup Inc and KKR & Company, as rents in the city state continued to decline amid slowing economic growth and increased supply.

BlackRock said last year that it could get more than S$4 billion for Asia Square Tower 1 and may also sell Asia Square Tower 2. The two towers together are worth S$7 billion, the firm estimated at the time.

“There has been a lot of near-term negativity on the Singapore market,” John Saunders, head of Asia-Pacific for BlackRock Real Estate, said in an interview.

“I think it’s a little bit overdone. There is some new stock coming on, but what tends to happen in Singapore is you get a big piece of supply that temporarily can disrupt the market, but then demand is always usually pretty strong.”

Both the Asia Square towers are 90% occupied and vacancies in the area are below 4%, Saunders said. About $100 billion of the Qatar Investment Authority’s stakes in local companies such as Qatar Airways and Qatar National Bank SAQ will be placed into a new internal division named Qatar Investments, people with knowledge of the matter said last month. The move is part of the biggest overhaul of the way the fund is run since HE Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohamed bin Saud Al Thani has been appointed chief executive officer in 2014.

BIM benefits are manifold and the BIM process helps to manage and organize design process through shared models

A

s Building information modeling (BIM) is increasingly becoming mainstream in Qatar, more companies are adopting the trend every day.

Some opt for a full transition to BIM, others use it on a project-by-project basis, depending on their clients’ requirements and contract terms.

Whether BIM is fully or partially implemented, the transition comes with its own set of challenges and benefits.

In a series of interviews, Construction Sites seeks to explore different aspects of this change and the critical factors in BIM’s successful implementation.

In this first interview of the series, Mohamed Mohsen, BIM Department Manager at Engineering Consultants Group (ECG), talks about BIM adoption and issues and challenged related to it.

QUESTION: What aspects of BIM are being implemented by your company now? How have you chosen those aspects?

ANSWER: ECG has been implementing BIM for the past 10 years. It first adopted BIM Modeling to achieve better design quality. By exploring software capabilities, BIM is being currently utilized for many jobs, including clash detection, technical design review and co-ordination, visualization, quantities extraction and validation, environmental analysis, cost estimation and project phases planning. All these aspects are chosen for their great impact on the design quality and process efficiency.

Q: What BIM software do you use? And what have made you to choose it?

A: Autodesk Platform is used and utilized for most of BIM uses. ECG utilized BIM in 2006 using Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture and MEP which was a good start before implementing Autodesk Revit in 2009 for all disciplines of BIM production.

ECG is a multi-disciplinary AEC firm and has been looking for the best BIM tool for collaboration among all disciplines; Revit has been chosen as the preferred ECG BIM software for aiding all team to work on the same platform which achieves better collaboration reaching the highest level of coordination and production efficiency.

Q: What are the main benefits of using BIM in your projects?

A: BIM benefits are manifold and the BIM process helps to manage and organize de-

sign process through shared models. There is less need for rework and duplication of drawings for the different requirements of building disciplines.

The model contains all information, allowing each discipline to annotate and connect their intelligence to the project.

BIM models are connected to database. The database aids for precise quantity takeoffs that are updated automatically as the model evolves. The computerized BOQ (Bill of Quantity) allows for more accurate cost estimation. Sharing and collaborating with models improve workflow.

Project-management is now being delivered on ECG shared servers which is considered as the main Common Data Environment (CDE). There are tools for different disciplines to share their complex project models and to co-ordinate with other disciplines. Technical reviews and markup ensure that each discipline has had input on the evolution of the design, and that they are all ready to execute when the design is completed and moves forward in construction process.

The digital model-based workflow aids to control project history so that users can be certain they’ve captured their time spent working on the model. The connection to the version history of the model’s evolution can help you avoid disastrous disappearances or corruption of files that may cause productivity problems.

Q: How do you assess the production benefits of BIM? A: BIM uses output efficiency which is one of the most important factors to assess the production benefits of BIM. Co-ordination and clash detection is one of the BIM uses that play an important role in the assessment; it reduces RFI’s and site wastes (time and material) by eliminating design conflicts. BIM analysis assists in achieving the environmental design aspects and reduces energy demand.

Q: What is the impact of BIM on design/engineering?

A: It directly affects the project cost, time, overall project delivery time and quality which are different from one phase to another in BIM implementation inside any AEC firm. At the beginning of BIM implementation, higher cost is required to upgrade your hardware and software and training budget for all

your employees and hiring new BIM professionals. Also, more time is required for BIM adoption as all your employees may still not be familiar with the shift. After this initial spending and with time, BIM can decrease the costs and eliminate time wasted, leading to decrease in the overall delivery time and better quality compared to the traditional design method.

Q: What are critical factors in successful implementation of BIM? A: People, process, standards and policy are the factors affecting BIM. From my point of view, people form one the most critical factors affecting BIM implementation. People are project stakeholders; project owners, design consultants and engineers, contractors, operators and BIM users.

Owners have to understand the importance of the integrated project delivery concept which is the most preferred contact type for better collaboration and less rework. BIM service provider’s consultants and engineers should be strict in applying the BIM process following the firm workflow and standards.

Q: What issues and concerns are you encountering on projects that incorporate BIM in design?

A: In Qatari market, the client team may list many sophisticated BIM contract items without studying their exact need and their impact on the cost of design and engineering services. On the technical side, there are some software limitations to integrate updates on BIM design models for the contractor use. Also, suppliers and subcontractors still don’t have BIM libraries for their technical input which affect the overall project time delivery and time needed for accurate model production.

Q: Has the composition of your design staff changed? Are there any new roles that arose with this technology?

A: BIM roles were introduced starting by BIM modelers and Co-ordinator for each discipline and ending with BIM department manager.

Each employee in ECG has his BIM responsibilities even if BIM is not added to his position. BIM implementation changed some roles for the existing staff and added new ones as well. BIM project management team and BIM R&D team are working together for implementing the best technology for the engineering process.

Q: How do you get all parties of a design project to agree on new methods of working?

A: BIM demonstration workshops, BIM meetings and BIM execution plans are set to guide all BIM activities which define BIM process, working methodologies and responsibilities and are considered as a strong agreement between all design project stakeholders.

Regular BIM meetings are required for BIM system maintenance and design coordination.

Saudi Arabia’s first Snow City to boost local tourism industry

audi citizens and residents can now enjoy a white winter in an environment that is safe. This follows the kingdom’s indoor snowtheme park at Al-Othaim Mall Rabwa in Riyadh.

Riyadh Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar inaugurated the kingdom’s first Snow City on July 13. The latest tourist destination is described as “a new chapter and a huge leap” in the local leisure and tourism industry.

During the inauguration event, Snow City showcased the variety of family-focused activities and entertainment that will entice visitors to this new tourism destination. Al-Othaim Leisure & Tourism Company introduced the Snow City features in the presence of Fahd bin Abdullah Al Othaim, deputy chairman of the

The city of parks and gardens Al Khor Park is the most recent addition to the public green spaces in Al Khor City.

It is a family-oriented park with an area of 25,800sqm, containing children’s play zones and a 1,350sqm football playground. The park also has 60m long footpath, adequate rest areas and toilets.

In addition to a traditional water well, the park features a 600sqm environmental section with an aviary and a mini-zoo. The park has 18 trees scattered all over the park and a total of 90 trees were planted on its borders.

There are also gauges for measuring pressure in the water pumps chamber, and in the water mains for maintaining its integrity.

The gauges are linked to the central system and information is sent periodically to monitor the performance of

the pumps so that the maintenance contractor has the necessary data in case of emergency or the malfunctioning of the pumps.

A common code soon for building projects in GCC The Gulf Building Code (“the Code”) is expected to be introduced in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states in the second half of this year, unifying building and construction projects in the region. Placing an emphasis on sustainable development, the Code is expected to consolidate as many as eleven different building codes throughout the region. The Code is intended to outline the minimum standards required for architecture, construction, renewable energy, water efficiency, indoor air quality, building maintenance, green buildings, fire together with mechanical and electrical. The exact details of the Code are still to be released, though the Code is said to be modelled predominantly on the Saudi Building Code incorporating aspects of the International Building Code and international best practice.

Particularly in the context of falling oil prices, a priority of many of the GCC governments remains diversification of their economies away from a reliance on oil and natural gas. Efficiency in construction and the alignment of interests is likely to facilitate market growth throughout the region and there is a common interest in ensuring a standardisation of health and safety throughout the states.

the absence of information on its form and implementation. It has been suggested by some critics that compliance with the Code will considerably increase construction costs.

However, Qatar may benefit from the unification, as the high costs associated with construction may level out with the lower cost of construction in the other GCC states. It is likely that the high standard of the Qatari Building Code will facilitate Qatar’s easy transition to the unified Code. Individuals contemplating construction projects should ensure that they take consideration of the specifications of the Code (when known) and the cost associated with compliance.

In order to ensure that the local customs are recognised, the Gulf Building Code is expected to be adapted to each member state. As all GCC states share a similar climate, environment and resources, it is likely that little variation will be necessary. The implementation of the Code is likely to mirror the European Union’s execution of the Eurocodes, where all members are subjected to the same standards with only minor modifications to adapt to the differing markets.

Sustainability initiatives gathering pace in the UAE Over the years, the world has witnessed the rise and fall of many cities owing to a combination of economical, geopolitical and social factors. Dubai, being the leading example of the growth of a city in a short span of time, has become a point of attraction and interest, both in the region and worldwide.

On November 27, 2013, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) won the right to host the World Expo in Dubai in 2020. Expo 2020 is a Universal scale Registered Exposition time slot sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), Paris.

This will be the first time that the World Expo is staged in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia region.

One of the themes of the Expo is sustainability. And Dubai aims to host one of the most sustainable expos in the history. The Expo plans are in tune with Dubai’s vision for the future. The government’s Dubai Plan 2021, which outlines the city’s future through holistic and complementary perspectives, has six themes: the people, the society, the experience, the government, the economy and the place.

“The place” is elaborated as “a smart and sustainable city”.

So how are these themes ma-

terializing in the UAE? What are the initiatives taken to achieve these goals and what is the contribution of concrete?

Several initiatives evolved all over the UAE promoting sustainability. “Plan Abu Dhabi 2030” (urban master plan) addresses sustainability as a fundamental principle. Estidama, which is the Arabic word for sustainability, is an initiative developed and promoted by the UPC (Urban Planning Council). The aim of Estidama is incorporated into Plan 2030.

Its main goal is to preserve and enrich Abu Dhabi’s physical and cultural identity, while improving the quality of life for its residents on the four equal pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic, social and cultural.

Furthermore, Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadalla Development Company, was launched in 2006 by Abu Dhabi. It is a multi-billion dollar investment in renewable and alternative energy and clean technology.

In 2008, Masdar announced Masdar City, the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste, carfree city. The city relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources. The project is scheduled to be complete between 2020 and 2025. In 2010, Green Building Regulations and Specifications were

introduced in Dubai, covering five aspects: energy, water, materials & waste, ecology and building vitality. The target of these regulations was to decrease CO2 emissions by 20%, reduce waste, save water and energy without increasing the cost by more than 5%. Concrete, being the most widely used construction material in the UAE, had a major role to play in these regulations.

In January 2014, the Dubai Municipality issued a new circular (202) regulating the concrete production by stating that all produced concrete should be “green concrete”.

The circular specifies requirements for the manufacture of “green concrete”, including limits on the use of supplementary cementitious materials like Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) as replacement for cement along with other factors related to durability.

Following this initiative, the Dubai Municipality won the “Dubai Government Excellence Award” for the Year 2016 under the Category of Innovative Idea. Knowing that those specifications may have some limitations in certain applications, the Dubai Municipality has adopted a new initiative in partnership with NRMCA (Na-

tional Ready-Mixed Concrete Association) and Grey Matters Consultancy (www.greymatters.ws) which may serve as an optional alternative route for complying with the local sustainability requirements.

The new project is called “Dubai Industry Wide Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for Ready Mixed Concrete”. It was introduced on November 25, 2015 during the sixth International Concrete Sustainability Conference, organized by Grey Matters and NRMCA in Dubai-UAE. This year the seventh International Concrete Technology Forum (ICTF) will take

place in Doha on November 20 in Grand Hyatt Hotel, and in Dubai on November 22, 23 in Al Bustan Rotana Hotel (www. concretesustainabilityconference.org).

The ICTF Dubai will include a panel discussion, deliberating local requirements of the Dubai Municipality for green concrete, their implementation, alternatives and concerns rising from different parties and the results of the Dubai Municipality EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) research.

Additionally, the Dubai Municipality, NRMCA and Grey Matters, will introduce for the

first time the “Dubai Municipality Awards” for Ready-Mix Concrete and Precast companies in Dubai. Companies will be rewarded for several achievements summarized by 10 awards, of which four are specifically for the ready-mix concrete companies and the remaining six awards will be granted to the ready mixed concrete and precast companies (three levels of awards for each), evaluating the performance in achieving the Dubai Central Laboratory certification under Dubai Municipality Standard Specification, DMS 026. vwww.greymatters.ws

Jamiaa Intersection, and from Al Hazm Intersection to connect it with Jelaiha Intersection (first stage) to become four lanes instead of three.

Environment Intersection was complete later in February after being recreated from a roundabout to signalized crossroads. Another expansion was made to the Environment Street and the distance from Al Shamal Bridge to Jelaiha Intersection on Al Khafji Street.

Al Rayyan Municipality issued most building permits in May

The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics has published the 17th issue of the monthly statistics of building permits issued by all municipalities of the state.

“The building permits data is of particular importance as it is an indicator of the performance of the construction sector which occupies a significant position in the national economy,” says a release.

“This release is intended to give a brief overview of the nature of these monthly permits in terms of their geographical distribution (according to the municipalities) and types of these permits (buildings, additions, fencing) as well as details about categories of the different types of buildings, whether they are residential or non-residential,”

The release of the monthly data comes under the joint co-operation between the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to make use of the existing electronic link between the two ministries.

In a quick review of the data on building permits issued during the month of May 2016, according to their geographical distribution, one finds that the Rayyan municipality (including Sheehaniya) comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building permits issued were 199 permits, i.e. 30% of the total issued permits.

with 187 permits, i.e.

28%, followed by the municipality of Al Wakrah with 94 permits (14%), the municipality of Al Da’ayen with 89 permits, i.e. 14%.

The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Al Khor 43 permits (7%), Umm Slal 38 permits (6%), and finally Al Shamal 9 permits (1%).

The new building permits (residential and non-residential) constitute 54% (356 permits) of the total issued during the month of May 2016, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 43% (281 permits) and fencing permits 3% (22 permits).

Within the new residential buildings permits, villas topped the list, accounting for 63% (188 permits), followed by dwellings for housing loans

by 26% (78 permits) and apartments buildings by 9% (28 permits).

Industrial buildings, e.g. workshops and factories, are in the forefront of non-residential buildings permits with 36% (20 permits), followed by commercial buildings

with 23% (13 permits), mosques with 21% (12 permits) and government buildings with 18% (10 permits).

The number of permits issued in May 2016 dropped 16% compared to the previous month. An increase was noted in the

municipalities of Doha (32%), Rayyan (16%), Al Daayen (30%). On the other hand, there was a decrease in the municipalities of Wakrah (3%), Umm Slal (10%), Al Khor (23%) and Al Shamal (10%).

GCC spending $100 billion in airport construction projects

Brussels Airport’s Connector provides global best practices in airport comfort.

Comfortable airport terminals will be key for increasing the number of passengers in the GCC’s $100 billion worth of airport projects, according to industry experts.

With the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projecting Middle East passengers to grow by 4.9% per year to 2034, the GCC is fueling $100 billion in airport expansion and construction projects in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, according to Deloitte.

Dubai International Airport is the world’s busiest international airport, and Al Maktoum International Airport is set to have one of the world’s largest capacities at 160 million annual passengers.

Abu Dhabi International Airport is set to reach 40 million passengers by 2017 with the new Midfield

Terminal.

“As Middle East airports expand, aesthetic and acoustic considerations are vital for growing passenger numbers, and providing a high-quality traveler experience, whether waiting, dining, or shopping,” said Mohamed Nawarah, Country Manager of Saudi Arabia at Hunter Douglas, the international airport consultancy based in The Netherlands.

“Good acoustics are essential for a serene airport atmosphere, such as by reducing loudspeaker sound, and perforated ceilings to minimize the noise of people talking or walking,” said Nawarah.

At Brussels Airport, the Connector is an aboveground building connecting Piers A and B, which replaced a dark route through stairs, escalators, and elevators. The Connector allows departing passengers to walk straight from the check-in desk to their gate, and arriving passengers to easily walk to the baggage reclaim hall and exit. The Connector also hosts Europe’s largest screening platform with 25 lanes.

Connector’s curved, customized Hunter Douglas 300C series ceiling, which is perforated and has an acoustic membrane, meets aesthetic and acoustic requirements by absorbing

the sounds of airplanes and the granite floor.

While people inside the transparent building can see the planes, they do not hear them.

The detachable ceiling also conceals the lighting and sprinkler systems for easy maintenance work.

“The shell-like roof structure naturally raises the ceiling little by little, so that the passengers can get used to the open space without being overwhelmed by it,” said Erwin Persoons, an architect at the international agency CTHM. “The curved shape of the ceiling does make it really difficult to realize good acoustics, though sounds are reflected in all kinds of different directions. This is why the sound-absorbing capacity of the material is extra important,” said Persoons.

GCC and Algeria facing slowdown Growth in the GCC countries and Algeria is forecast to slow substantially in 2016 as the impact of lower oil prices is felt through tighter fiscal policy, weaker private sector confidence and the tightening of liquidity in the banking systems.

A report released by the IMF in June warns GCC governments that deficit reduction measures will need to be substantially increased.

Unprecedented conversations about service fees and the possibility of a regional value-added tax are now common place and look to be implemented in some countries in the in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) this year.

“An additional substantial deficit reduction effort is required over the medium term to preserve fiscal sustainability and, in the GCC countries, to support the exchange rate pegs,” the IMF said, according to a report on the Gulfbusiness. com.

“Policymakers need to be mindful of emerging signs of liquidity pressures in their financial systems and the risk of deteriorating asset quality,” the IMF said.

Revenue from taxes will be an important source of revenue for GCC governments it said.

“On the revenue side, the GCC countries have room to raise receipts in all areas, from both

indirect taxes (VAT, property) and direct taxes (personal and corporate income taxes)”.

As significant as the tax revenue could be, the IMF argued that the current plans for a 5% VAT rate in the GCC would raise about 1.5% of GDP in the region but increasing public investment efficiency could save another 2%.

It seems that initiatives like the GOIC’s will be critical to bolster the non-oil GDP growth in the region as the fallout from the lower oil prices may cast a shadow over the GCC economy for some time yet.

Work on Lusail City’s CP7B begins

CP7B, one of Lusail’s most iconic smart city projects, has begun to take shape, thanks to the Qatari Diar – Saudi Bin Ladin Group Consortium (QDSBG) which has been appointed as the construction contractor for infrastructure package.

Work on the phase, which has already enhanced momentum key to materializing “The Heart” of the smart city, will contain some of Lusail’s most notable infrastructural developments, including the construction of: the main A1 artery road, Lusail Plaza “Public Realm” and car park, 2km of multi-lane below ground highway, a three-level combined tunnel, flyovers and bridge crossings, a light rail transit station, a four-storey underground car park, local

access roads, associated mechanical, electrical and hydraulic installations and waterfront landscaping works.

The completed works will contribute heavily to transportation, commercial and social hub of the entire Lusail City development.

Thus far, project designs have already been issued for the construction of shoring systems, with the completion of permanent works for the schematic design finalized.

However, detailed design plans are still in the early stages with on-going co-ordination with authorities currently awaiting approval.

Nevertheless, fundamental construction works on CP7B has commenced with the initia-

tion of piling works, sea protection diaphragm walls and site specific excavation, which is now approximately 1/3 of the way to completion (totaling 2 million cubic meters).

Formation preparation has also been operationalized through the advancement of concrete blinding in selected areas in north and south CP7B locations.

CP7B contractors QD-SBG said they would continue to draw on their vast experience and resources to ensure a highly successful project outcome, “contributing to the high caliber delivery of design and construction in keeping with Lusail’s innovative development and building prowess”.

CONTINUED… CHEMICAL ATTACK Concrete performs well when exposed to various atmospheric conditions, water, soil, and many other chemical exposures. However, some chemical environments can deteriorate even high-quality concrete. Concrete is rarely, if ever attacked by solid dry chemicals. To produce significant attack on a concrete, aggressive chemicals must be in solution and above some minimum concentration.

ACIDS In general, partland cement concrete does not have good resistance to acids. In fact, no hydraulic cement concrete, regardless of its composition, will hold up for long if exposed to a solution with a pH of 3 or lower. However, some weak acids can be tolerated, particularly if the exposure is occasional. Acids react with the calcium hydroxide of the hydrated partland cement. In mostes chemical reaction forms water-soluble calcium compound, which are then leached away by aqueous solutions (ACI 201 1992) The products of combustion of many fuels contain sulfurous gases which combine with moisture to form sulfuric acid . Also certain bacteria convert sewage into sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is particularly aggressive to concrete because the calcium sulfate formed from the acid reaction will also deteriorate concrete via attack. In addition to individual organic and mineral acids which may attack concrete , acidcontaining or acid-producing substances such as acidic industrials wastes, silage, fruit juices, and sour milk will also cause damage. Acid rain which often has a pH of 4 to 4.5 can slightly etch concrete , usually without affecting the performance of the exposed surface. To prevent deterioration from acid attack , partland cement concrete generally must be protected from acidic environments with surface protective treatments. Unlike limestone and dolomitic aggregates , siliceous aggregates are acid-resistant and are sometimes specified to improve the chemical resistance of concrete specially with the use of chemical-resistant cement. Qatar Ranked 27th on Networked Readiness Index Qatar ranked 27th among most networked nations in the world and second among Arab countries, (UAE that ranks 26th), on the 2016 edition of the “Global Information Technology Report GITR” published by the World Economic Forum in partnership with INSEAD and Cornell University. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rank 28th and 33rd, respectively.

Qatar is paying considerable attention to its ICT sector as a catalyst that greatly contributes to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030, an attitude that explains its high rankings on the GITR 2016, which is out this year under the theme “Innovating in the Digital Economy.”

The report, which covers 139 economies, has measured the drivers of the ICT revolution globally since 2001.

On the Environment subindex, which includes nine indicators measuring the political, regulatory, business and innovation

environments, Qatar ranks first among all Arab economies and advanced to 15th position in the world. On the same subindex, UAE ranks 19th, Saudi Arabia 28th, and Bahrain 35th.

Qatar also leads Arab world and ranks 4th and 2nd worldwide on the two indicators of “efficiency of legal system in settling disputes” and “efficiency of legal system in challenging regulations”, after it was ranked sixth and fourth in last year’s edition of the report. Qatar also ranks third in the world in the “laws relating to ICTs” indicator.

On the Usage subindex, Qatar ranked second at the Arab level and 19th worldwide. Usage

subindex measures technology adoption and usage by the three groups of stakeholders; the government, the business sector, and the population at large.

On the indicator that measures technology adoption and usage by individuals and ICT companies, Qatar ranked 23rd and 25th, respectively, and 5th globally on the indicator measuring technology adoption and usage by government.

Furthermore, Qatar came third at the Arab level behind Bahrain and Kuwait and 54th globally on the Readiness subindex, which measures networked readiness in terms of ICT infrastructure, affordability, and skills. That is a point of weakness because, according to the report, tariffs of mobile services and fixed broadband internet are relatively high. However, Qatar ranks first among all Arab economies in terms of mobile network coverage.

Ashghal opens the Bridge Extending from F-Ring Road to Mesaimeer Road

The Public Works Authority recently opened the new bridge extending from the F-Ring Road to Mesaimeer Road. This bridge provides a direct and free-flow traffic to Bu Hamour, Al Maamoura and Salwa Road.

Mr. Abdullah Dhafer Al Hajri, the first Qatari national that passed the bridge right after its opening praised the new bridge and commented on its importance to traffic, especially traffic coming from Hamad International Airport and Al Wakra towards Doha.

The bridge with the road connected to it will allow moving easily and directly from Al Waab, Salwa Road, Bu Hamour and Al Maamoura to Al Thumama, Hamad International Airport and the Corniche.

The bridge along with the FRing Road will provide a 14 km free-flow highway without

any traffic signals, which will enhance traffic movement and provides easy access to and from vital areas such as Hamad International Airport, Salwa Road, Bu Hamour, Al Maamoura and Al Thumama.

Additionally, two temporary extra lanes will be available to enable vehicles from making a U-turn onto the F-Ring Road under the bridge to reach Barwa Village, the Religious Complex, Al Wakra and the Industrial Area through using the new service road which is approximately 1 km long. This is in addition to providing two lanes to make a U-turn under the bridge in

front of Al Jazeera Academy, enabling access to this area through the service road.

The closed exits of Rawdat Al Khalfat, Rawdat Al Dabdaba, Al Kharija Street and Al Rabyat Street will be opened. The bridge with the F-Ring Road extension will make accessing a number of important destinations and schools much easier and faster.

This bridge is a vital part of Rawdat Al Khail Road project, which aims to enhance traffic flow and ease traffic jam in the area. It will also connect the Industrial Area with Doha city centre and make it easier to reach Bar-

wa Village and the commercial area. It also connects the F-Ring Road with the Whole Sale Market and Mesaimeer Street.

The Rawdat Al Khail Road project includes building an 8 km long dual carriageway road with three lanes in each direction, in addition to building six multi-level interchanges, namely: the East Industrial Interchange, Karwa Interchange, Barwa Interchange, Barwa Village access Interchange, Woqod Interchange, and Al Jazeera Interchange on the F-Ring Road.

Agreement to organize Green Expo 2017

T

he Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), in cooperation with Dar Al-Sharq Group, has announced the launch of Green Expo 2017, which is going to be one of the region’s biggest exhibitions and conferences addressing a wide spectrum sustainable solutions.

As per the agreement signed between the two parties, the Green Expo will be organized in 2017, to be followed by the same event every consecutive year.

On the launch of Green Expo 2017, Dr Yousef Al Horr, GORD’s Founding Chairman and head of the organizing committee, said the event would provide “a unique platform to showcase sustainability best practices in the fields of green building, climate change, clean energy, as well as environmentfriendly transportation”.

He said: “The Green Expo

It would provide an excellent opportunity for green advocates to share knowledge, exchange ideas and showcase their latest green technologies, solutions, innovations and do business, Al Horr added.

Jaber Al Harami, Deputy Chief Executive of Dar AlSharq, said: “Dar Al-Sharq’s media expertise will help bring together green environment projects and the business community in Qatar.”

He affirmed that the group had signed the agreement, represented by Al-Sharq Media Management, which

is experienced in organizing some of the largest and important exhibitions and conferences in Qatar, particularly the Civil Defense Exhibition and Conference, Media Expo and the Traffic Medicine and Safety (ITMA Congress 2015).

Ezzedine Abdel-Rahman, Executive Director of Al Sharq Media Management and Executive Director of the exhibition, welcomed the agreement, referring that all the expertise, capabilities and experiences of Dar Al-Sharq would be utilized in the strategic agreement, which aims to introduce state-of-theart green technologies and raise public environmental awareness.

Qatar has shown its firm commitment towards sustainability, in line with the directions of HH the Emir and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
