By Alahandra Jones The records we break are never as important as the ones we set for ourselves. In other sports there are season highs, but in track there are personal bests. There is a distinct difference because track isn’t just about who your competition is. A runner is not only racing against those in the lanes next to them, but the clock. In track, it is a race against oneself. When someone “PRs (sets a personal record) it can be expected that he or she is running at his or her best. When someone sets personal records in three very different events in one meet, well that’s something worth regarding. The Great Southwest Classic Indoor Invitational took place over the weekend of Feb. 14-17, in Albuquerque, N.M. Lorne Jenkins, accompanied by four of his coaches made the trek from Frederick to Albuquerque. Lorne has great admiration for his coaches and recognizes their sacrifice. “A lot of coaches don’t go on trips like that, so that was amazing, he said of their support, which helped him give one of his best showings to date. Lorne finished sixth in the men’s 200-meter with a time of 23.41 second, a personal best. He placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time

Grafting a New Business in Firestone

Sometimes a gardener will graft a delicate tree branch onto a stronger root stock to stabilize it, establish stronger growth, and reap more fruit. When the greenhouse in Firestone needed a new tenant a wonderful thing happened. The Walker Family, owners of the property, met some women from Denver who run a nonprofit committed to developing urban and peri-urban farming through education and model farms. What began as a request to use the empty greenhouse space for a few months to begin

By Audrey Logan The Spot is a new place to get in shape and have fun while doing it through Zumba. Mary Mumby and Matthew “Lupe Maestas are the instructors and have a passion for what they do. To them, it is not just about “spotting those unpleasant extra pounds and losing them, it’s about getting healthy in mind and spirit as well. Their basic theory is, if you don’t take care of all the aspects in your health you will still be missing a huge piece of what health really is, like puzzle missing its center. Blessed By IT I clutched my head with both hands. My voice was loud and filled with defeat, “God, I can’t do this.â€? Then I saw my granddaughter watching me with bulging eyes and chin dropped down to her chest. Normally, I’m pretty calm when Annah is around. We play a lot and we pray a lot, together. But as I near another press deadline for the CVCR and still have the girls, full-time now, I fear for the lot of us. I am not made of what I thought I was made of. And there have been many days now that I’ve realized I am getting too old for all the running around required for a six-year-old and a three-month-old. And they are good kids. What must it be like for those who have, shall I say, rambunctious rascals? So here I sit with the first good meal I’ve eaten all day and a glass of wine. And I’m faced with what I wrote last month‌. In defense of myself, this morning, I did choose to let God lead me today. He filled me with peace and there was a calm that surrounded me and bolstered my confidence and made me smile even though I was the only one in the room. That lasted for twelve and a half minutes and then we, the girls and I, were off and running. Getting ready for school requires we checkoff five items for Annah and make sure ZoeAnn is fed and changed before buckling her into the 85 pound car seat that was never meant for a grandmother’s arms. The rest of the day is a total blur with not much CVCR work to show for it but I have to admit, we all managed to fit in some group hugs, tickles and cuddles. But what about the clutched head episode? Despite throwing up a hundred desperate pleas for help throughout the day, I don’t feel like God rescued me at all. Where was He? I know I am not the only frazzled grandma and what about all the parents who are at their wit’s end? I’m not the only one crying out to the Lord for relief. The plea for relief might not even be about child rearing but rather money or marriage or health issues. Just this last week I found out my brother has prostate cancer. I know I’ve been praying about that and I’m sure Rick has begged God for healing, as well. What do we do though if relief is not in sight? Here are three things that help balance me when I feel alone and stressed. I hope they help you too: 1) Strive to be honest about what you have control over and what you don’t. Many times, we freak out over things that are completely out of our hands, like Rick’s cancer. The cancer is there and it won’t disappear (although I do believe in miracles). What can be controlled though, is seeking out a good doctor. Doing research to educate yourself. Eating to get your body as strong as possible to fight the disease and heal from surgery and treatments. 2) Get back to the basics; go back to your calm, happy place. Start over. Breathe deeply. Regroup. Ask for help; whether from God, a friend or a family member, don’t go it alone. Every month I ask for prayer in my writing and producing the CVCR. I also ask my husband to take care of his own meals and I ask my daughter to stop by the grocery store; all during deadline week. Whether it’s eight in the morning or eight at night, if I’m overly anxious, I pick up my daily devotion and read it again. I remind myself who is “really the boss.â€? My Boss has proven for fourteen years, that He gets the job done EVERY month. 3) Have faith that if relief does not come today‌there is always tomorrow. And every morning is a new start. Sometimes you just have to hang it up, whatever it is, and go to bed and get some sleep. When fatigue sets in, everything and I mean everything else seems to fall apart. Why do we push ourselves to exhaustion as if the world will explode if we don’t

For me, those of the Owner and publisher of the Carbon Valley I find myself getting cranky and frustrated Consumer Report. The Consumer Report assumes no because I can’t make an ad look the way I responsibility for any outcome to any businesses, any visualize it. Or like today, I’m embarrassed advertiser, any people or any government entity. that Annah had to see me so desperate just because a particular job was late getting to press. In the end, what mattered was the fun Annah had collecting fresh eggs from a friend’s chickens and the sweet smile on ZoeAnn’s face as she kicked her pudgy-toed feet in the air. What does not get done today, will be first on the list tomorrow. And as one wise person once told me, “What HAS to get done, WILL. I’m not going to beat myself up over Annah seeing me distressed and worried. Life is like that and she needs to learn that “this to shall pass and grandma will be better tomorrow. I suppose Annah is already learning this because she initiated praying today. Do you know what she prayed? “Dear God, let grandma get the paper done and let it be good. Amen God always gets IT done and IT is always good.

Jessica's Law & Second Amendment Rights for Citizens

Michael McIntosh, Division Chief of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office appeared as a guest on The O’Reilly Factor on the FOX News Network on March 15th. McIntosh voiced his support of Jessica’s Law, now adopted in 44 states but recently killed by a Colorado House committee. Jessica’s Law mandates long prison sentences for sexual assaults against children. In his many years of service as a Patrol Deputy and as a Detective specializing in crimes against children, McIntosh has seen first-hand the devastating effect such crimes have on victims and their families. The Department of Justice reports that sex offenders released from jail or prison commit 40% of sexual crimes. McIntosh calls this statistic “appalling” and believes that Colorado can do better. Mike said, “The state of Florida provides a perfect example of the impact of this law. Before Jessica’s Law, the repeat sex offender rate Repeat sex was 34%. Since adoption of the law, this recidivism rate offender rate has dramatically dropped to 2%. The children of Colorado deserve this level of protection and as a law enforcement was 34%... officer, I support Jessica’s Law.” After Jessica's McIntosh is a candidate for Sheriff in Adams County Law it dropped and on March 19th addressed a full house at his campaign to 2% kickoff and fundraiser at CB & Potts in Westminster. His speech emphasized his commitment to lead with character and integrity, his support of Jessica’s law and his views on recent attacks on Second Amendment rights. He asked those in attendance to join him in his calling to serve at such a time as this. Addressing the crowd, McIntosh advocated a partnership where, “together we ensure that ours is a community where we want to work and raise our families, and one in which we desire to build our lives.” Learn more about Mike’s campaign at www. McIntosh4Sheriff.com.

Ursula J. Morgan for United Power Board

Ursula J. Morgan is running for United Power Board of Directors representing the West District. She is a married mother of two, a Colorado native, and has been a member of United Power since 1995. She attended the University of Northern Colorado, and has worked in e-commerce, senior health care/hospice, and as a Real Estate Appraiser, specializing in Northern Colorado properties. Morgan is also a dedicated volunteer fundraiser for The Children’s Hospital Foundation and The Children’s Miracle Network. Morgan served on the Board of Trustees for the Town of Mead, including service as Mayor Pro Tem. She also served as one of the Town of Mead’s Planning and Zoning Commissioners. She served on the Board of Directors for the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), as a Policy Setting Committee Member with the Colorado Municipal League, and on the Transportation and Air Quality Planning Councils for the Upper Front Range and North Front Range of Colorado. Morgan is a member of the Colorado Women in Government Committee. Morgan believes that “Collectively the United Power Board is doing a good job, but that individually some board members have become a bit removed from the member-owners they represent. As the challenges associated with energy production and distribution continue to grow both in terms of cost and complexity, open communication with member-owners becomes even more important in addressing their concerns and interests. I believe an important area for improvement lies in more proactive direct engagement with member-owners, as well as the local and regional governments that represent them.” She continues, “As a member of United Power’s Board of Directors I will assist in the guidance and leadership of our electric cooperative, working for the best interest of our member-owners. To accomplish these goals I will make myself readily available and easily accessible to listen to, understand, and act upon our member-owners’ concerns and opinions. Areas of my focus include: cost control, service availability and reliability, advancing technology, conservation, and renewables.” Ursula can be reached at: ursula@ ursulajmorgan.com or 303-709-4523.

yard, please be sure to be aware of the 2013 outdoor water restrictions. As I mentioned last month, due to ongoing drought conditions and less than normal snowfall, the City will be imposing water restrictions from April 1-September 30. The continuing drought conditions means everyone's cooperation is critical to making our water supply last and preventing the implementation of more restrictions in the future. The April water bill will include a special flyer outlining water restrictions and water-saving tips are featured the April City Connection Newsletter. As always, water restrictions should not be confused with ongoing water conservation efforts. zz Do not forget, the City of Dacono will hold a special election on May 7, 2013 regarding the operation of medical marijuana centers in the City of Dacono. This is a mail-in ballot election. Active registered

voters will be mailed a ballot. If you are not a registered voter, April 8th is the last day to register to vote. Ballots will be mailed on April 15th to registered voters. All ballots are due by 7:00 p.m. on May 7th. Please note that postmarks do not count as received ballots. zz On the horizon is Almost Free Building Permit Month, the annual Team-Up to Clean-Up Dacono, and the first citywide garage sale. More details about these great community events next month. zz As always, have a safe and healthy month. Your Mayor, Charles Sigman

Indian Peaks Medical Center in conjunction with Longmont United Hospital. This facility will provide quality medical care for our community for many years to come. It is truly an asset to our community and to the entire region. zz Working with our regional neighbors continues to be important. To this end, quarterly meetings are held with Frederick, Firestone, Dacono and the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce. The meetings provide a way to share information concerning what is taking place locally as well as what is taking place regionally that impacts all of us. We also work together on areas of importance to our collective citizens. zz Meeting and networking with others was the theme of the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Unity in the Community event held recently. Over 600 people attended to meet and greet elected officials as well as to network with other businesses and non-profits. I attended on behalf of the Town of Frederick and thoroughly enjoyed

sharing what we have taking place here with the many people I met at the event. zz As we move through Spring and in to Summer, water is on our minds. Larger municipalities including Denver Water have indicated that they will implement watering restrictions in an effort to conserve water. While the Town has not make any decisions concerning restrictions, we will be discussing options as we move forward. zz Strong home construction continues and new businesses continue to pop up. Please join me in welcoming the Carbon Valley Coffee House to downtown Frederick. Drop in to say hello and support a local business. zz Lastly, Stephanie Martin, long-time Executive Director of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce is leaving to pursue other opportunities. We wish her well and encourage the Chamber to keep the momentum going in the future.

Firestone Approves Trail Construction

The Firestone Board of Trustees approved a new crusher fine trail to be constructed at its March 13, 2013, regular meeting. The trail will be funded by the Firestone Parks Impact Fee Funds. The trail will run along Frontier Street connecting the existing trail at St. Vrain Ranch Boulevard south to Pine Cone Avenue. The trail will also circle Firestone’s Central Park, utilizing existing concrete trails where available. The total trail addition is 3.16 miles. The trail is an expansion to the Town’s existing trail system and is consistent with the Firestone master parks and trails plan. Funds for the $50,000 trail will come from the Town’s Parks Impact Fee Funds, which are collected from new development and are specifically allocated for the acquisition, design, construction and improvements to the Town parks, trails and open spaces facilities. Funds from this impact fee can only be utilized for the noted items, and not for general operations and maintenance of Town parks. The impact fees are required to be used within a 10-year period. The crusher fine material is small particles of crushed rock that give the trail a packed sand-like surface. A permanent concrete trail of the same length would cost approximately $560,000. Construction of the trail is anticipated to be complete by mid-May 2013.

Lorne cont. from pg 1 of 8.56 seconds, tenths of a second behind first — another personal best. T h e 400 was Lorne’s best event. He won with a time of 51.56 seconds, a personal best, and like any other sport, a definite win. Lorne also finished second in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 8 3/4 inches. His personal best for that event is 22 feet, 5 inches, a distance that has him ranked #1 in the State of Colorado. Despite all his personal success, Lorne’s favorite part of the meet was running anchor in 4x400 relay. “We got third place, he said, It feels good to win with your team. The Southwest Classic was no doubt a success for Lorne, four medals, 3 PRs, but he is already looking ahead to his next meet. “ Now it’s time to focus on my senior year and hopefully come out a state champion. We have a feeling that the next record Lorne sets for himself will also break those of others.

Once this condition is observed can occur in Colorado, usually at the north side of we need to address it as soon as possible by scraping, your home, appearing on siding, gutters, downspouts, etc. Because there is less sun or no sun to evaporate moisture, the north facing sides of structures are prone to mildew first. Our remedy for these problems is to power wash with a cleanser additive, follow with primer, then a top quality paint that contains mildewcide, before painting. We also see mildew inside at areas where moisture is present - showers, basements, etc. In theses situations we apply a stain blocking primer, alkyd based if possible, again topped with a good top of the line latex or oil paint. This saying is especially applicable with real estate transactions. Even those that have bought or sold several homes rarely do it often enough to keep up with all the complexities of a real estate transaction. Travel in 2013

Vacations have always been special: the relaxation, the memories and the adventure. The economic news recently has proven to be a challenge for many. What I see is some back to the basics type of ideas. For instance, some retailers are offering layaway programs and such. This same idea can be applied to a vacation. Once you have booked your vacation and put your deposit down, you can always pay in installments until the balance is actually due to the tour operator or cruise line. Vacations have always offered us the chance to escape the everyday stresses and give us time to reconnect with our friends and family. Vacations offer us a chance to experience things we don’t usually have access to like exploring the Mayan Ruins in Mexico, hiking the Waimea Canyon in Hawaii, snorkeling or scuba diving along the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. For some of us that like less adventure in our vacations, there is always that river cruise along the Danube River, or the museum visits in Europe. The values we are seeing these days are in the all-inclusive resort vacations, in Alaska and Mediterranean cruising and in the escorted tours or river cruises in Europe. The all-inclusive resort vacation offers you the worry-free fact that everything is included with meals, beverages and some water activities included. This type of vacation is a good value for families, especially with

teens. No worries about meals and soft drinks! Everything is paid for upfront so other than any tours or souvenir purchases there are really not much in out of pocket expenses. Cruises are another good value. They offer some of the best entertainment and gourmet food than any other vacation. Cruise lines are offering some wonderful deals. Alaska is popular again this summer. This is another pay up front type of vacation. The cruise offers you the opportunity to see many different destinations and experience different cultures in a short week or a relaxing longer vacation. Lastly, the European river cruise and escorted tours have some wonderful money saving offers right now. Whichever way you look at it, if you can plan ahead, you can still take that vacation and create more memories with your family and friends, or reconnect with your spouse. There are wonderful offers out there and your travel consultant can help guide you to find that perfect value. Race Presenters: Town of Firestone, Anytime Fitness-Firestone and Longmont United Hospital Foundation to Raise Awareness for Colon Cancer FIRESTONE, Colorado – Full Moon 5k & Festival race presenters from the Town of Firestone and Anytime Fitness-Firestone are excited to present the second annual event on Sept. 7, 2013. The race and festival raises money for colon cancer awareness and benefits the Longmont United Hospital Foundation. This year’s Full Moon 5k & Festival runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex, 6805 Tilbury Ave. The 5k starts at 8:30 a.m. and a kids’ fun run is set for 9:30 a.m. Festival attendees will also be able to enjoy activities throughout the day, which will include a variety of business and nonprofit vendors, fitness activities, health fair screenings, games, a blood drive, face painting, balloons, a caricature artist, inflatables, great food and more. Outstanding live entertainment throughout the day will include the inspiring rock sounds of Bailout!, modern country duo Kelly Aspen and Brandon Sipes, and classic rock from Case in Point. The Full Moon 5k utilizes the Firestone trail system, is chip timed and certified by the USA Track and Field Association. “Supporting those in need is tremendously important to Firestone,” said Firestone Mayor Chad Auer. “The Firestone Full Moon 5k is another example of how we are stepping up and doing our part to help raise money for colon cancer research. I look forward to running it again this year with even more participation from our community.” In its first year, the Full Moon 5k had 195 runners participate and brought awareness to colon cancer, which is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is equally common in men and women. With recommended screening, colon cancer can be prevented by removing polyps before they become cancerous or detected early when it can be more easily and successfully treated. Nicole Grine, owner of Anytime Fitness-Firestone, said, “Being a part of the effort to fight back against a disease that affects so many, is an honor. Most of us know someone who has battled cancer, so it is personally touching to celebrate those who are winning the battle against colon cancer and to save more lives by promoting early detection through more education and research.” The Full Moon 5k was organized by family and friends in honor of Firestone resident Sindy Angelovich, who was diagnosed with colon cancer on Dec. 16, 2011, at the age of 48. She went through surgery that month at Longmont United Hospital to remove a mass from her colon along with 31 lymph nodes. Fortunately, only three of the 31 lymph nodes were compromised with the disease. She went through chemotherapy from January to June 2012 at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers and continues to fight the good fight with family and friends on her side. To register for the race, or sign up as a sponsor, vendor or volunteer, visit http://full-moon5k.com/.

Small Business Development Center

North East Central Small Business Development Center offers free help, advise, counseling, and services to entrepreneurs who want to start their own business, or need help to keep their business thriving. North East Central SBDC is a part of the Association of Small Business Development Centers and works in partner with many local and state development agencies. They are currently offering Business Start-Up Orientation classes at the Carbon Valley Regional Library and at the Erie Library, see dates and times below. This association wants to see local businesses grow and prosper, there are many businesses that are just waiting to bud, but maybe the owner doesn’t know how to get financing, or even where to start with making a business run. After all, there are taxes, maybe a building, and possibly employees to worry about. This orientation covers: Business Licensing Requirements, Business Taxes, Legal Forms of Organization, Components of a Business Plan, Marketing Essentials, Financial Planning, Funding your Business, Grant Opportunities, Creating a Business Plan, and Launching your Business. SBDC will show you how to start, and where to go to get your business up and running. They will supply you with resources to make sure you feel comfortable and confident in your new venture, and where to turn when you don’t feel like you know what you’re doing. “Weld County Garage has seen the SBDC take an interest in our business and they truly care about helping us succeed. Dick has been very helpful and resourceful especially when we were needing to obtain a business loan. We have also used the SBDC’s staff to help facilitate our yearly goal planning meetings. I believe our investment has been a valuable partnership.” Says Warren Yoder of Weld County Garage, Buick. They received help, then chose to help sponsor a cause they believed in. “Prior to three years ago, there were limitedresources available for small businesses -entrepreneurs in Windsor to seek assistance. Since SBDC has established a presence in Windsor, small businesses now have a place and resource to gain more information and assistance in succeeding in Windsor. It has been very beneficial to the community to have a readily accessible program available to small business owners.” Kelly Arnold, Town Manager of Windsor. “The SBDC is an integral part of our local community. Individuals interested in building a business from an idea have to have a resource that will guide them through the process of funding and building their enterprise. The SBDC is that resource. The Northeast East Central SBDC has consistently proven to be valuable to small businesses, large businesses and the local education community as well. Aims Community College is pleased to have been a partner with the SBDC for many years and looks forward to a great future.” Steven Kahla, Ph.D., Dean of Continuing Education at Aims Community College. March 18, 2013 To the Membership of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce, The purpose of this letter is to advise the membership and others that Executive Director Ms. Stephanie Martin has tendered her letter of resignation effective May 31, 2013, to the board of directors. It is with tender regard that I write these words knowing it is Stephanie’s intent to leave the Chamber. Stephanie began working for the Chamber as a part time employee in August 2003. She was eventually promoted to full time executive director, working from several different office locations including her own home. During her tenure as executive director the membership has grown from 60 in 2003 to over 250 today. She served the needs of the Chamber office, its boards and committees, and the membership with diligence, tenacity and personal fortitude. She has been fastidious in carrying out the duties of her office with dedication to the best interest of the Chamber. In her elegant humbleness she has been the consistent and respected face of the Carbon Valley Chamber to the members and the community for the past ten years. We will miss her presence and her special congeniality that we have come to know as the Carbon Valley Chamber. Stephanie leaves the Chamber in good standing and with pride in a job well done. She intends to pursue new opportunities and career goals. We wish her the very best and great success in her future. Thank you Stephanie, from the board of the directors, the Chamber membership and the Carbon Valley Community. Sincerely Bill Meier, CV Chamber President

What is Corrective Exercise?

TOTALLY

Corrective Exercise is a form of exercise that brings the body back into a perfect postural position. The body is designed to perform at its optimum level when it is in a position of good posture. Unfortunately, over time we tend to pick up all of these bad habits of slouching, leaning, or even sitting at our desks at work in these really strange positions. Over time, your body will start to assume poor posture in everyday things that you do. This means that the body will tighten in certain areas and loosen in other areas. Muscles will become weaker and some may not even work at all. Dysfunction will start causing pain in other areas of the body. Corrective Exercise is designed to undo imbalances and compensations and guide the body to work in harmony and lessen pain. Corrective Exercise helps pinpoint the location of the pain; and, given the appropriate exercises, pain is lessened and eventually eliminated. Corrective exercise teaches the muscles and joints in the body to work together without pain thus creating long-lasting physical strength and flexibility. Through Corrective Exercise you will be loosening

the muscles that have become tight (flexibility) and activating the muscles that have become lazy (strength training). Basically, we work towards re-educating your body to move as it was designed to so that it can function at its optimum level. Benefits of Corrective Exercise â—?â—? Pain reduction â—?â—? Empowers you to take control over your pain without drugs or surgery â—?â—? Improves functional and athletic performance â—?â—? Helps reduce the risk of sports or training injuries â—?â—? Identifies physical imbalances and weaknesses â—?â—? Identifies the difference between movement quality and compensations â—?â—? Improves the activities of daily living â—?â—? Enhances strength, flexibility and power â—?â—? Postural improvement â—?â—? Stress reduction If you suffer from muscular pain and stiffness you may be a prime candidate for corrective exercise. The first step would be to attain a fitness assessment by a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) such as myself to determine what your compensations are. I would then determine a proper corrective exercise protocol for your specific needs. Exercising with compensations could make your problems much worse. Let a professional help you determine what type of exercises and stretches would benefit you. Shelly Porcaro, NASM- CES/CPT, SFN (303) 539-8325 shelly@justtrifitness.com www. justtrifitness.com.

Construction at Indian Peaks Medical Center is well underway! It may look like dirt is just being moved around at the Indian Peaks Medical Center site but what you are seeing is the beginnings of the infrastructure of the Medical Center. Electric, gas, water and wastewater utilities are being set up. The contractors needed to bore under Highway 52 to bring utilities such as water and fiber optic lines to the building location. These utilities will also serve the neighboring properties and future development phases of Indian Peaks Medical Center.

The building pad is also being constructed with fill dirt from the site to reduce the environmental impact of this development. “We hope the use of site dirt will build an awarenessofsustainable building practices in future Carbon Valley developments, commented Peter Powers, director, business development, Longmont United Hospital. The benefits of using site dirt are reduced trucking needs and increased local resource utilization. The unused areas of the site will return to a farmable condition in time for this year’s farming season. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 12th with the Mayors of Frederick, Firestone and Dacono in attendance as well as representatives from the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Longmont United Hospital Board of Directors. Richard Lyons, Chairperson of the Hospital Board of Directors, spoke to the Longmont United Hospital’s commitment and dedication to serve the Carbon Valley area. Over 60 people attended the event.

Are You Tired? Are You Dealing with Unexplained Fatigue?

So many patients today present to their doctor complaining of chronic and persistent fatigue. With our busy and stressful lifestyles, it is easy to attribute a generalized sense of low energy to our hectic pace. But sometimes energy levels can decline rapidly and significantly and are related to a deeper underlying condition that are often missed with “routine blood testes. If the cause of ongoing tiredness and low energy is not determined by conventional testing, there are a number of conditions that should be considered. The presentation and onset of these conditions can be variable and subtle, but over time can develop into potentially serious problems if left undiagnosed and untreated. Of course there are many causes of fatigue, but here are several common ones that often go overlooked--sometimes for years. 1. Vitamin D deficiency. Low vitamin D can present with decreased serum calcium levels and early bone loss. But it also causes many people to feel tired and achy. In fact vitamin D deficiency is often misdiagnosed as “fibromyalgia. It is quite simple to replace this important vitamin, but the first step is obtaining a blood test to find out if your levels are too low. 2. “Pre Diabetes: Early in the course of this prevalent disease, glucose levels commonly fluctuate between “too high and “too low, both of which can cause fatigue and malaise. Although Type 2 diabetes is characterized as “hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and insulin resistance, those who suffer from “hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) have a higher risk of developing this disease later in life. Merely testing fasting glucose levels will often miss early diabetes or pre-diabetes, which can be more accurately detected with glucose tolerance tests or hemoglobin A1c. 3. Celiac Disease: This is a serious condition that should always be considered in cases of unexplained fatigue. This severe form of gluten intolerance occurs in genetically predisposed individuals and can cause myriad symptoms, or sometimes no symptoms at all. While many affected patients may suffer malabsorption or weight loss, at least 20% of those with celiac disease are overweight. Other common features include low iron levels, low calcium levels, “peripheral neuropathies (numbness, tingling, or weakness in arms or legs), irregular bowel habits, bloating and migraines. 4. Hormone Imbalance: Abnormally low progesterone or testosterone levels are common reasons for low energy. Often associated with low libido, poor sleep quality, and mood changes, these conditions can be very effectively treated with modern replacement strategies. Obtaining blood or saliva testing to assess your hormone balance should be a part of any serious investigation into causes of chronic fatigue. 5. Autoimmune thyroiditis: One of the most common autoimmune disorders is a condition in which your body’s own immune system attacks your thyroid gland tissue. Over time this causes a decline in your thyroid gland’s ability to produce its hormones. Often the standard tests may be within the reference range, and yet your thyroid may not be functioning properly. Antibodies used to detect Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (thyroid peroxidase antibodies) as well as free hormone (fT3 and fT4) testing can sometimes be useful in cases when the routine thyroid test (TSH) is borderline. 6. Medications: There is a lengthy list of frequently prescribed medications which are known to cause fatigue. Certain drugs used to treat blood pressure, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, pain medications, allergy medications, and many other categories are commonly associated with fatigue. If you have not done so recently, put all of your medication bottles into a bag and bring them to your next doctor’s visit to have them all reviewed. A general lack of understanding of this complex disorder causes some people to discriminate and often unintentionally be hurtful with their words & reactions. Many parents struggle with the fact that, almost overnight in some cases, their children are different. Their behaviors shifted from socially communicative to exhibiting delayed speech, awkward mannerisms and lack of interest in others and no eye contact even with their own mother. These parents must not only deal with the issues around raising a child they don’t always understand, they must also be an advocate for their child & deal with the prejudices & ignorance of others. A parent asks oneself, “Did I do something wrong?” “Was it medication, vaccines, diet?” “Is it hereditary?” All valid questions with so far,

Do you know the difference between a rattlesnake and a bull snake? A group of kindergartners and fifth graders at Imagine Charter School at Firestone do, and they want to share what they know with you. The students are planning an “Animal Expo” for Saturday, April 27th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school as part of a service learning campaign they’ve created. After closely looking at the community and its needs, the students realized that they wanted to help support animal awareness. They have been learning about animals from different local and regional organizations in order to be able to teach others about wild, domestic, and farm animals. Guest speakers at the school have included a Firestone animal control officer, an outreach person from Denver’s Dumb Friends League, and a park ranger from Barr Lake. Kindergarteners say that learning about all of the animals is “fun and we should keep doing it.” The fifth graders describe the experience as exciting and inspiring. The campaign is being sponsored by Roots & Shoots, the organization for young people set up by naturalist Jane Goodall. Imagine Firestone’s group is one of several in Colorado helping to pilot a program in the state. Service learning is encouraged in schools across the country, and is

CV Academy Celebrates March

Simplicity

By Lisa Gjellum, Principal, Carbon Valley Academy Carbon Valley Academy had some fun between the rigors of TCAP testing. The first of our celebrations were on PI day, March 14th. The students gathered in the gym for a story about PI, then made a human circle with a human circumference and activities concluded with a pie eating contest. Four of our male teachers were contestants. They included Mr. Reitsma (grades 6-8), Mr. McCray (grade 4), Mr. Burns (grade 5) and Coach (PE) with Mr. McCray winning the contest. Our second celebration on Friday, March 22nd was to celebrate the completion of TCAP for grades 3-8. Students gathered in the gym for an assembly which included a flash mob dance to the Cupid Shuffle led by grades 6-8. Candy was flying through the gym as students cheered and celebrated each student’s hard work. Students are excited to begin spring break and then come back for that final push to the end of the year.

THAT PLACE Adding Middle School

THAT PLACE has been open for 7 months to our carbon valley high school aged students! As we start to plan for next school year, we reflect on that and realize that it has been an incredible journey of relationshipbuilding with some incredible students and we have been able to offer all of the things we had hoped as we began this journey.

Moving forward, we want to see what it would look like to also open our services up to middle school students in the ways that we have the high schoolers, with an additional advantage. We would like to see our core group of high school students spending time along with our volunteer adults at THAT PLACE, with the middle school students to hang out, offer homework help and even do some mentoring along the way! Effective April 8, we will begin Middle School Mondays where exactly that will happen! Another upcoming event that will be a great learning opportunity and get the students more involved in our community is a "Town Meeting" scheduled for May 6th from 4-5pm.

National Day of Prayer – Thursday May 2, 2013

As our nation struggles with continued economic insecurity, vast healthcare reform, and countless challenges to our constitutional rights, citizens of the United States are preparing to exercise their freedom to gather, worship, and pray. Millions will answer the call to prayer on May 2nd in observance of the 62st annual National Day of Prayer. Organized events will be held in thousands of public venues where intercession will be made for America and its leadership. This year’s theme, “Pray for America”, is based on Matthew 12:21 which reminds us that “In His name the nations will put their hope.” National Day of Prayer (NDP) Task Force Chairman Shirley Dobson, wife of Focus on the Family and Family Talk founder Dr. James Dobson, has said that, “The American people continue to be plagued with challenges that defy simple answers, and our hope lies in humbly seeking the Almighty’s guidance, protection, and blessing – not only on the National Day of Prayer, but throughout the year.” The Senior Pastor of Prairie Community Church, Brian Thompson, will again facilitate the National Day of Prayer event in the TriTown area. The assembly will take place at the Firestone Town Hall at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 2nd. The community is invited to gather together to lift up prayers for our community, our state and our nation.

Clean Filter Cuts Consumption

“Heating and cooling is the single biggest energy consumer in a home, and accounts for about 40 percent of all the energy used by homeowners,” said Josh Robertson of Carbon Valley Heating and Air. “That’s why taking steps to ensure the unit is running as efficiently as possible can help lower cooling costs this summer.” The following tips will help keep your air conditioning and heat pump units running efficiently: • Check the air filter and change it if it’s dirty, or according to the manufacturer’s recommendation, to keep dust from collecting on the evaporator coil fins. • Keeping your filter clean can cut energy consumption 5- to 15-percent. • Clear away leaves, grass, weeds, plants, and other debris that block airflow through the outdoor condensing unit, which is the large metal box in your yard next to your home. • Clean the outdoor condensing unit by spraying it with a water hose. • Check to make sure air vents inside your home are not obstructed by furniture. Air in your home needs to circulate easily through the vents. Your air conditioner works less when air can circulate freely. The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) also suggest that homeowners hire a professional to service their air conditioner. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in the system. Look for a technician that is certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE). You can find a NATE-certified technician online at

Spot cont. from pg 1

www.natex. org. They also recommend t h a t homeowners establish a service agreement with a reputable contractor that will take care of regular spring and fall maintenance to ensure maximum efficiency and catch problems early, before they can become bigger and more expensive. A service agreement also ensures that the homeowner has priority during the hottest and coldest months, when problems are most likely to emerge. “With proper maintenance, central air conditioning and heat pump units should last at least 12 to 15 years,” said Yurek. “Homeowners need to regularly service their heating and cooling equipment to keep them running smoothly. Spring is a great time to think about getting service before hot weather arrives and the rush for service is in full swing,” he added. You can find their recommendations at: www.ahrinet.org Carbon Valley Heating and Air is a local HVAC company that can provide you with a NATE certified technician and safety and efficiency agreements to ensure your peace of mind. Aims College Holds Tuition Rates Flat For Second Year In A Row

GREELEY, COLO. -- The Board of Trustees for Aims Community College voted unanimously on Wednesday to keep tuition rates flat for a second year in a row. In-district tuition rates will remain at $67.36 per credit for the 2013-2014 academic year, the Board determined, and out-of-district rates will hold steady at $105.73 per credit. “In a fiscal climate where many higher education institutions are passing cost burdens on to students in the form of increased tuition rates, Aims Community College has been able to stay true to our mission of providing the best education at the most affordable cost, said Aims Interim Chief Financial Officer Jim McLaughlin. The Board additionally agreed to suspend a $10 per-credit technology fee and a $20 per-class infrastructure fee for 2013-14. “Because we are seeing improvements in the economy, particularly regionally, but also statewide, Aims is able to hold tuition rates flat and mitigate fees that have paid for what they were intended, said Aims President Marsi Liddell. “We are very fortunate that our Board of Trustees has the wherewithal to ensure that student success is our driving force.

Firestone Awarded Grant from Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund for Firestone Boulevard Expansion

FIRESTONE, Colorado – The Town of Firestone has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund managed by the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA). The funds are derived from oil, gas, carbon dioxide, coal and metals extracted in Colorado. The program is designed to offset impacts of the energy industry on local governments. The awarded funds will be utilized for the Firestone Boulevard expansion project planned for the summer of 2013 from Interstate 25 to Birch Street to improve travel times in this corridor. The project will address congestion at the intersections of Firestone and Jake Jabs boulevards and Firestone Boulevard and Birch Street by adding an additional general purpose lane for both east- and west-bound traffic on Firestone Boulevard. The project will also include the addition of dual northbound left turn lanes from Birch Street onto westbound Firestone Boulevard. The current project construction budget is estimated to be approximately $1.1 million.

Firestone Delivers Coordinated Planning Agreements to Mead and Platteville

FIRESTONE, Colorado – The Firestone Board of Trustees delivered coordinated planning agreements to both the towns of Mead and Platteville on March 19, 2013. The agreements specifically address cooperative land use and growth management between the Town of Firestone and the respective municipalities as needs and demands for municipal services increase. The Board of Trustees has found this model agreement to be helpful in its relationship with the City of Longmont, and is pursuing a similar model with the Weld County Commissioners. Within both agreements to Mead and Platteville, the draft agreement identifies areas of mutual cooperation in the land where the Town of Firestone and Mead and Platteville share common interests, tentatively labeled the Highway 66 Corridor – St. Vrain River Planning Area. Along with Firestone, both Mead and Platteville have developed master plans. By entering into an agreement, the Firestone Board of Trustees feels that all three communities will be afforded the flexibility to communicate and coordinate in accordance with their respective master plans as they overlap and intersect. Firestone Mayor Chad Auer said, “Firestone has continued to maintain transparency regarding its planned land development and is looking forward to deliberating the agreement with each of the communities to achieve a final result that will be respected by all three municipalities.”

Funding for this project comes from the Town’s impact fees, as well as the awarded grant from DOLA. With this project, the Town’s impact fees for such capital project will be exhausted. Once a grant agreement is received from DOLA, it must be executed by both the Town and DOLA before Firestone may proceed with construction of the project. Firestone Engineer Dave Lindsay said based on the Town’s anticipated schedule of receiving and completing the grant agreement, the project will be bid in April and a construction contract will be awarded in May. Construction would follow shortly after and should take about three months to complete. Most of the work and expansion will be done on the south side of Firestone Boulevard, so there should be minimal disruption to through traffic. There will be some disruption to traffic on Birch Street when that part of the project is completed.
