Mead’s Rachel Crow: Carla’s Voice in Rio 2

A Woman’s Job in a Man’s World

By Kelly Fordyce Martindale Rio 2 opens April 11 and features the voice of Mead’s own, Rachel Crow. Most became familiar with Rachel when she competed on the first season of the U.S. version of The X-Factor, a singing competition, where she placed 5th overall. We loved her throughout the show and were disappointed that we found out her roots were in Mead, AFTER the show was nearly over. I’m sure she would have won if all our readers had known and would have been voting! Let’s support Rachel by going to see Rio 2. My granddaughter and I can hardly wait for the opening. Rachel and her family will be in town to view the movie together with her grandparents and friends. I am honored to have an appointment with Rachel and will get to spend some getting to know her. There will be a full feature article in May’s issue of the Consumer Report of Mead. Rachel splits her time in Mead and also in California where she works regularly on many projects and completes her high school requirements at a home school for actors. She attended Mead’s Elementary and Middle schools. Rachel works with Columbia Records (has one cd out) and has a TV deal with Nickelodeon for her own show. She's appeared on many TV shows, including BrainSurge, Inside Edition, Big Time Rush, Figure It Out and The Wendy Williams Show.

By Robin Barrett Meet Melissa O’Brien. She owns and operates “Handy Mom”. Handy Mom is a “handy-man” service owned and operated by a woman and mother who enjoys doing home improvements. Melissa started Handy Mom so she could either help those in need or do the work for them, work alongside them, or just teach someone how things are done. This service is awesome for women who would rather a woman be in their home, than a man, when they are home alone. Melissa is from a small town in Iowa but has lived in Colorado for almost 20 years. Melissa says, “I can’t imagine being anywhere else.” She says, “My favorite time of the year in Colorado is spring because everything is new and fresh and the weather is perfect.” She also thinks spring is a good time to get outdoors and enjoy some gardening or landscaping. Handy Mom was officially started in September 2013. Melissa quit her job to be home for her kids but needed something to do while they were at school. She also wanted the flexibility to be home for her children after school and during the summer and other times off. Melissa really enjoys doing home improvements and says, “I’m really Great at it.” Handy Mom jobs work great with her goals for her children. Handy Mom services Mead, Longmont and the Carbon Valley area including Erie. Other areas are considered. Handy Mom will service anyone, but mostly those people who just need a helping hand around the house. She finds most people call her because they do not have the time, the knowledge of how to do the job or the ability to do small tasks on their own. It’s great to have a “Handy Mom” business that is available to help with those small home improvements. If the job requires more than one day, you will be certain that Melissa is the one that will be back to finish the job. Handy Mom is a one-woman business. She

MEAD MAYOR REPORT

z When you sit down to read this fine publication you will note that the Town of Mead has a new Mayor-elect and some new members of the Board of Trustees. As many of you know, I was term limited and therefore was not eligible to compete for the Mayor’s position. I do want to congratulate all the winners on their election and if I can be so bold offer a suggestion. Now that you are elected and have rejoiced in your win it is time to park the “ego”, focus on the future of the best town on the front range and listen to the thoughts and concerns of your other Board members. Collectively you will pool your ideas and come up with the best solution for your constituents. z I do thank all the Board members that worked with me over the years, the office staff and the public works division. Governing in a town is not a singular effort but the great Board members and professional staffs made the job a lot easier. Thank you again. z Now to some real information for you. Please remember that the annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 19 in Founders park and starts promptly at 9 AM. Also the Spring town clean up days are April 25 and 26 and will once again be at the Mead Ponds. And while you are updating your calendars the Special District elections are on May 6. We do have a number of special districts in town including HOAs, sewer and water districts and the Mountain View Fire Protection District. The polling place for the Fire District is at the temporary station 3 which is located in the business park at 14120 North Valley Drive. Yours truly is running for the Fire District Board and would appreciate your vote. If you can’t make the polling place let me know and I will get you a form so you can receive and absentee ballot.

z The renovated town hall is coming along on schedule. Completion is scheduled for July 1 and we are allowing two weeks for the final inspections and clean up of punch list items. I do know the staff and the fire house are getting anxious to move back into their new quarters. The town hall addition should accommodate the administrative functions of your municipal government for the next fifteen years. I am also glad to report to you that the renovations are “under budget” and the town will be “debt free” for this project. z The town has not been idle in terms of infrastructure improvements. We are working with the Downtown Revitalization Committee and have contracted with United Power to complete the lighting for Main Street. This is also a project that will not cost the taxpayers because Mead has accumulated some funds at the electric utility and those will be used for the completion. Outdoor activities are also important and the town Board has directed the park planner and staff to work on the completion of the neighborhood park in the Liberty Ranch subdivision and the construction of a new basketball court at the park in the Margill II. z As the weather improves I urge you to watch out for the children that might chase that ball into the street. I also want to thank everyone in Mead for the opportunity to serve you to the best of my ability and your confidence in living, working, playing and raising a family in the best town in the State of Colorado. Please keep the men and women protecting our freedom in your prayers. Semper Fi !

May Elections & April Election Results

My name is Richard Macomber and I am requesting your vote for me to become a member of the Mountain View Fire Protection District Board. I have served as a volunteer fireman, EMT and first responder for thirty-two years, ten of which were with Mountain View Fire District. During my active fire service days I worked side by side with the professional men, women and officers of the fire district. I respect them for what they do every day and I understand from first hand experience the job, the stresses, the concerns, the need for training and the proper equipment. My position on the Mountain View Fire Protection District would be to assist the leadership of that fine organization in the continued development and strategy to deliver the best service to the constituents and those travelling through the district in terms of fire, emergency medical and fire prevention services. I do have a degree in accounting and a masters degree in finance and will quickly understand the finances that need to keep the district moving forward. The election for the district is on May 6 and you may vote at any Mountain View Fire House. The temporary fire house in Mead is located at 14120 North Valley Drive in the business park. If you can’t make the polls on that date, please give me a call (970-301-0716) and I will get you a form to request an absentee ballot. Thank you and I sincerely request your vote.

And the Winners Are...

The Town of Mead election is officially over. All of the candidates have been through thought provoking, heart wrenching and maybe even life changing moments during this race. Regardless of the outcome, those individuals who offered themselves and their time for the service of the Town of Mead deserve recognition and thanks. It takes a special person to serve a community or those in need.
