Eddie Stephen Long’s Helps You Get Insurance a Home Agency
By April Fordyce Blewett Have you been renting but wanting to buy a house? Like many out there, I’m sure you have, at one time or another, wished that you had enough money to buy the house of your dreams. Do credit issues plaque you… don’t know if you can qualify for a home loan…don’t know how or where to start? Eddie Stephen is the man to call. His goal is to help you achieve your dream of home ownership. He is a licensed mortgage professional without the high pressure attitude. “I don’t like high pressure sales either,” Eddie says. “I always offer free information to everyone who asks and I don’t expect anything in return. My goal is to build long term relationships based on trust. I make myself available to my clients regardless of what their needs are.” He says the relationships have to start from the ground up and that means, many times, helping those who have no idea where to begin. Eddie educates clients so they can make a knowledgeable decision about what loan program best fits their needs and situation. In the first phone call or the first steps through his door, you’ll know that you have found more than just a man with a plan. You have found someone you can trust and rely on. On top of that, he is a friend to all those who are new to the concept of mortgage.

Owner, Jim Long says, “We started Long’s Insurance Agency in March 2003 as we felt that the market was underserved by knowledgeable independent agents who really cared about their clients. So many ‘sales’ businesses only view their clients as a ‘transaction’ and then move on to the next ‘transaction.’ We at Long’s Insurance want to know all of our clients so that we can help them purchase the insurance coverage that is needed to protect them and their assets in the event that they should have a loss. Our clients are not just a number to us, we feel they are our friends and we know them by name. We want to be their ‘Insurance Consultant’ not just someone who sells them insurance,” Jim says. Long’s is a one-stop, independent insurance agency, that has not one, but various insurance companies that they work with. They are not linked to any one brand name company. Jim’s office takes the time to contact multiple insurance providers, asking them questions and getting quotes, based on the client’s individual
Glacier Park Tutor Doctor Helps Storage 4+ Your Student Stars Rated

Glacier Park Storage is a privately owned storage facility offering storage for local residents and businesses who are in need of long or short-term storage. Storage units range from 5’x5’ to 15’x40’ units. Plus, Glacier Park Storage is the place to go when you need U-Haul trucks, trailers and car trailers. Glacier Park Storage has gated access and 24hr surveillance cameras, individual door alarms and onsite managers. Their in office “store” also has some really nice art prints at discounted prices for the new house. These store items are available to the general public. You do not have to rent a storage unit to partake in the great prices offered. Originally, Glacier Park Storage was built in 2008 by a long distant owner/operator from Virginia. Their plan was to have a family member move to Fredrick and operate the business but, as we all know,

By Audrey Logan Susan and Jay Stype come from a long line of teachers and educators. They believe education is important for the future success of any child and continued success of adults. Tutor Doctor Longmont is able to bring success and confidence for students of all ages and subjects. So many parents tell them how unpleasant it is to tutor their own children; frustration (for both student and parent), confusion and stress on family relationships. Also, curriculums have changed since the parents went to school. How they learned to work a problem is not the accepted way in school today. Tutor Doctor Longmont uses the magical match of tutors and they work with the curriculum of the student’s school. During the free initial consultation, the education consultant learns the personality of the student: their hobbies, likes/ dislikes, learning style. Then a tutor is matched to meet the needs of that particular student. A relationship is formed where the student is comfortable to ask questions and receive an answer specific to their learning style. All this occurs in the comfort of their home and at a convenient time. Good for the student AND the parents. Relieve stress and learning begins. “We differ from a learning center in that we come to your house on your schedule, and provide a one on one learning

Helping Others
August marks not only the anniversary of my daughter’s death but the day that changed my life forever. I’ve been a different person since August 7, 1990. The death of not one, but two of my four children, in the last 23 years has altered the course of my entire life. Because of that, my heart breaks for those who also have children who die too young and too soon. There is no way to take away the pain that hovers for years to come. But through my column, I try to let readers know they are not alone in whatever circumstance they find themselves in. I try to offer hope and encouragement based
on my own experiences of KNOWING that hope is always there for us and that joy DOES come again. I now know too many parents who have been inducted into this “club” for those who have lost children. As recent as yesterday, I heard of yet another mother whose son died. I am sad for her and her family. Another friend just made it to the one year anniversary since her daughter died. It’s been a long year for that family. My writing officially started after Alisha died. Some parents start organizations such as M.A.D.D. One of my friends organized a fundraising run. I hope you will read on and if you cannot participate, I hope you will donate to their chosen cause. Like Susan, I was also an unmarried teen with my first born, Jason (1978-2002). Please make a difference today and join Susan and her family, in their endeavor to bring hope and help to others.

In Memory of Our Son
The Richard Lambert Memorial 5k Run Turtle Trek is an event organized to remember Richard Lambert. Richard passed away September 4, 2012 unexpectedly at the age of 26. Richard graduated from Brighton High School in 2003 where he played football and was an outstanding athlete. After graduating Richard attended the University of Northern Colorado. Richard was currently working in the oilfield service. Two weeks after losing Richard our family formed the idea that we should do a walk for Richard. With only two weeks to plan, we were blessed that Barr Lake State Park was willing to allow us to hold our 1st annual “unorganized” Richard Lambert Memorial Run/Walk. We were able to spread the word to our family and friends and we had approximately 60 participants. For me the “Walk” represented that I got up out of bed, put my feet on the floor and took that first step each morning and that God was going to “walk” with me. For our family it represented that we would “walk” this journey together as a family. We have now founded the Richard Lambert Memorial Run Turtle Trek to continue to share and honor Richard’s life. Richard was known for his hard work ethic, sense of humor, big heart, loyalty and faithfulness to his family and friends. Richard had a very giving heart, one year, two young children who belong to one of his best friends, was not going to have a Christmas. Richard gladly made it happen for them by taking the children’s father shopping and told him to pick out whatever he wanted for the kids, he also organized for us to help participate in the Santa gifts and additionally supplied the children with many more. Richard made sure this young family was taken care of in many other ways. So my husband and I feel that it only seems fitting to honor our son by giving the way that he did. Here evolves the idea of choosing a charity. We thought of many options that would reflect Richard and his life. Nothing felt just right, until teen pregnancy was mentioned. A light went off, I was a teen mom with Richard. He had stated to me many times in his young life “how proud he was of me for having him, loving and taking care of him, never giving up on him and becoming successful while having him at such a young age”. What a gift those words were

Frederick Board to Dedicate Splash Pad & Gazebo
The Frederick Board of Trustees officially dedicated the new splash pad and gazebo at Crist Park Thursday July 25th at 5:30 p.m., beginning with a Q&A with the Board of Trustees in the new gazebo followed by a christening of the splash pad by members of the Board jumping in to enjoy its cooling effects. Both of the new additions are part of Frederick’s downtown revitalization efforts, and have already begun attracting a new audience to downtown to cool off in the splash pad and enjoy the Downtown Sounds concert series in the gazebo every second and fourth Thursday June through September. “We’re excited to see the community coming out to enjoy the gathering place that Downtown Frederick naturally provides,” said Mayor Tony Carey. “These additions have created another reason to come downtown and support our neighborhood businesses.” The dedication will be followed by a Downtown Sounds concert with jazz band PJ Zahn from 6-8 p.m. so guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the free music.

Frederick to Allow Chickens
After receiving extensive feedback, the Frederick Town Board of Trustees voted to allow residents in single-family detached homes to keep up to six hens in their backyard. Ordinance 1145 will take effect July 19th and will require residents to get a free license which can be obtained at Town Hall during regular business hours. The question of allowing chickens was asked for resident feedback in the Town’s monthly newsletter and on Frederick’s facebook page. After an overwhelmingly positive response from hundreds of residents through both outlets, the Board of Trustees directed staff to draw up regulations for keeping hens and voted to approve the ordinance at their June 11th meeting. “It is exciting to see our residents helping to shape the community they live in,” said Mayor Tony Carey. “This was a perfect example of the way government is supposed to represent the will of the entire community for continued success.” The license will not expire unless a resident moves to a new residence within town boundaries. Specific requirements for keeping the hens include, but are not limited to, a predator safe coop and a clean environment for the hens. Many homeowner association bylaws do not allow poultry of any kind. Please research your individual association regulations. If you have questions about the Town’s regulations, please contact Jennifer Simmons at 720.382.5651 or jsimmons@frederickco.gov.

One Nation, Under God ?? -Paulette Revere
Many of the Founding Fathers had deep religious convictions. Patrick Henry (“Give me Liberty or give me death”) said that our country was founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ; James Madison said, “We’ve staked our future on our ability to follow the ten commandments with all our heart”; Noah Webster, who wrote the first dictionary, could literally quote the Bible chapter and verse; and Thomas Jefferson called the Bible the cornerstone for American liberty. Even Benjamin Franklin said that although he is unsure of whether God exists or not, he felt it was better to believe in Christianity and the Christian God than not to, for the Christian teachings prevented moral anarchy. The official motto of the United States is “In God we trust”. God is mentioned all over Washington D.C on its monuments and buildings, and the Liberty Bell has a Bible verse engraved on it (Leviticus 25:10). So, is God in America today? • The Government attempts to discredit God and redefine right and wrong. It expands entitlement programs, and promotes environmentalism like it’s a new religion. • Deviate behavior is accepted and even promoted. • The traditional family is attacked, men are being “Chickified”, and fatherless families are not uncommon. • Illiteracy is growing at an alarming rate. • Rape, murder, and violent crime are everyday news topics • Drug use/abuse is on the rise especially among young adults • Thousands of unborn babies die every day • Pornography is rampant, often aided by the internet Our nation was founded on Christian principles because the Founding Fathers recognized the value in them to create a moral, virtuous society. It seems we have strayed from those principles. If our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people, as John Adams believed, what's next? “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible” – George Washington

Firestone Vision – Past , Present & Future Paul Sorensen – Mayor Pro-tem, Town of Firestone
Back when Firestone was no larger than a half-mile square, the town board had a vision of growing the community north and west to get to the Interstate 25 and County Road 24 interchange. Once we grew to that vision, the next decision to expand County Road 24 to the paved road we have today not only created improved access but was critical in making development possible. The end result was the King Sooper’s shopping center along with Walgreens and other shopping conveniences. Now this same road is inadequate to meet the growing needs of our community. Heavy traffic conditions during the morning and evening rush hour and the two lanes to single lane reductions has created a high rate of road rage between frustrated drivers. The board’s recent decision to widen our entranceway into town by expanding Firestone Boulevard from the Frontage Road to Birch Street will take care of our immediate needs. The expansion will reduce traffic congestion, relieve drivers stress and create better traffic flow. This project is already under construction and will be completed early this fall. Currently, the board and a dedicated group of residents are working on a plan to meet the increasing demands of our streets improvements and maintenance, as well as parks and trails maintenance. The board is considering asking our residents to approve a 1 percent sales tax increase this November to create a dedicated revenue stream to fund street operations, maintenance and projects that the town currently does not have in place. This revenue will also be used for operations and maintenance of our beautiful parks and trails. Two of the capital improvement projects that the sales tax initiative will address are street projects. First is the full build out of Firestone Boulevard to four full lanes from Interstate 25 to Colorado Boulevard. This widening will create interest from developers to build additional retail and commercial projects along our entranceway bringing jobs and conveniences to our community. The second project will address the oldest streets in the historic part of Firestone that are in need of replacement. The aging water system that needs repair or replacement can be funded through our water fund, but in order to get to the water system the streets need to be torn up and replaced. To date there are inadequate funds for a project of this magnitude. The additional 1 percent tax will allow the town to address this growing concern before we begin to have issues with this aging infrastructure. Please take a few minutes to inform yourself on this important proposal by reading the information in the Firestone Voice, the town’s website (www. 303-518-0089 ci.firestone.co.us) and follow the “Citizens for Firestone’s Future” on facetoface@q.com Facebook to www.jenniepoppenger.com find out more about this proposed solution. You get to decide on Helping people connect to how our community moves forward with your vote. Please get engaged and business through social media follow this issue all the way to the ballot box. I truly believe this will be one of those historical moments in our town’s history. Jennie Poppenger The Social Media Whisperer

FIRESTONE MAYOR, CHAD AUER
Streets & Parks: In July, a group of Firestone citizens came to the board with a proposal to address the need to create a plan for sustainability. I appreciate their dedication and willingness to get involved with the important issues of self governance. They have been candid, thoughtful and optimistic about the future. As a result, they have a solid plan that will help Firestone move forward. I encourage everyone to learn more about the proposal and connect with the group on Facebook - Citizens for Firestone's Future. Outreach to Area Residents: As you may recall, earlier this year Firestone received a land use application that included a shooting range. As is the case with many Chad Auer

A spirits tasting and competition includes some of the finest locally distilled products. For $10 get a commemorative glass and up to 4 tastings. The evening ends with the headliner band, The Samples, followed by the best fireworks show in the Carbon Valley. Join us under the water tower at Centennial Field for a fun-filled day, great music, and fabulous fireworks. As always, admission and parking are free! This year the City is proud to host its first National Night Out Celebration on Tuesday, August 6th. Join the City of Dacono and Mountain View Fire Rescue as we celebrate National Night out from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Dacono City Hall. The celebration is a great community event with fun, food, educational exhibits, giveaways, safety displays, and best of all it is FREE!! Mountain View Fire Rescue will feature their Barnyard Safety Bus. National Night Out is an annual worldwide event that brings together
citizens, law enforcement agencies, local officials and local businesses to increase anti-crime awareness and strengthen community partnerships. Be a part of this great community event. If you have ever thought about running for City Council, be sure to pick-up a nomination packet beginning August 6th from the Dacono City Clerk. You don’t have to be a local government expert, just someone who is committed and cares about our community. I would also like to welcome Erich Haakmeester to the Dacono City Council. Erich filled a council vacancy left by a recent resignation. Please remember watering restrictions remain in effect until September 30. If you don’t know your watering day, please check out the City website. As this month winds down and school resumes, please be sure to slow down and look for eager kids at bus stops and loading/ unloading from school buses.
means of always knowing what is taking place, we've recently fully updated the Town's website. The website includes features that allow you to pay your bills online, to find out about jobs that are available, to learn more about doing business in Frederick and much more. The easy "I Want To" feature leads individuals through step-by-step processes that address a wide variety of needs. Take a moment to check it out. Visit www.frederickco.gov In the near future the Arts Commission will be making final decisions concerning where to place the wood carving art generated by the recent and very popular chainsaw carving competition. The event drew many people to the community and was enjoyable to all. The artwork will serve as a reminder of the event and the talent of those who participated. Community BBQs continue throughout the month. The event is very popular. I've received a great deal of positive feedback. We know that it can be intimidating to come and speak publicly at a Board Meeting, so we’re coming out into the community. I hope you and your neighbors
will come and chat with us so we can build a stronger community through creating meaningful relationships. The Town will be grilling free hot dogs, so come and see us! The free concert series continues every second and fourth Thursday, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in Crist Park. The concert series is held in conjunction with the Farmer's Market. More information concerning the Community BBQs and concerts may be found on our new website. Lastly, school starts this month. Please remember to watch for students and remember to slow down and drive carefully in school zones. We look forward to starting the students off on a positive note. For more information concerning items listed, please visit www.frederickco.gov
land use applications, this one drew emotional fervor on both pro/con sides. Over the years, as both Mayor and Chairman of the Weld County Planning Commission, I have facilitated hundreds of land use hearings with integrity, civility and a commitment to the legal process. In this case, the dialogue often deteriorated into hyperbole, false accusations and even slander toward me and my family. Once the application was withdrawn and I was legally free to discuss the issue. In June, I sent an email invitation to those who emailed me about the issue offering to sit down over coffee and visit about this issue, Firestone's Master Plan, address misinformation propagated by select individuals or anything else. I offered to meet individually or with a group. Interestingly, no one has taken me up on this specific offer. Regardless, the offer stands. Anyone interested can reach me at cauer@ci.firestone.co.us. Proposed IGA with Mead: The Firestone Board of Trustees, in an effort to find common ground on regional land use and Master Planning, sent a draft Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to Mead. Our proposal was based on the IGA that Firestone has with Longmont and was an attempt to re-kindle the dialogue between our communities. In the interest of transparency, I want to update everyone on our current status. Based on the response we received, it is clear that we have a long ways to go in terms of reaching agreement because of our differing philosophies on such issues as personal property rights, economic development and master planning. We respect the fact that individual communities reserve the prerogative to have differing philosophies. I simply cannot compromise Firestone's vision by agreeing to the current proposal from our friends
to the north. I am optimistic that continued conversations will result in a workable IGA. The Carbon Valley Relay for Life deserves special recognition for the enormous success of this years event. Once again, record levels of participation and funds raised are attributes of the event. The Relay continues to bring out the best of the area. Economic Development: Firestone has two new restaurants and more are headed our way. Please consider a local business when it is time to go out to eat or shopping. Firestone continues to stand strong with our local men and women of the Frederick Firestone Fire Protection District. As our town's grow, so does our Fire Department. Thanks to the leadership and professionalism of our department, we are able to deliver extraordinary fire and ambulatory service. Please take a moment to learn more about your fire district and lend them your support. Community Events: As we move into the fall, Firestone continues to host a number of community events. Please check our website for schedules. Mosquito Control: As you know, the Town of Firestone has a mosquito mitigation program designed to reduce the risk of contracting the West Nile Virus. Our goal is to reduce the mosquito population using the safest available strategies and tools. For a complete explanation of the agents used in our program, please visit our town website. Coffee Talk: Have advice, comments, complaints, questions or ideas to share with the mayor? You only have 8 months left before you upgrade your mayor so now is your chance! Email me at cauer@ci.firestone.co.us and we will set up a time to visit. I look forward to chatting with you!

Pests Got you Down?
One of the toughest challenges for an organic garden is pest control. While it might seem easy to go for that bottle of bug spray, there are things that you can do that will kill pests, and not the environment. The first and best way to handle pests is to get a head start by keeping them from becoming a problem in the first place. Companion planting - planting certain herbs or flowers between rows can deter many nasty pests. For example, plant marigolds throughout your tomatoes to control aphids. Second, try some floating row covers. These are especially useful when plants are young, or when the particular pest is in its active stage. This translucent fabric can be draped across the plants and held into place with some metal support frames. Using pheromone traps for known pests can help give you an early warning as to when it is time to break out your row covers. Third, sticky traps can be made or purchased. Different colors attract different insects. For example, yellow traps attract whiteflies, fruit flies, and gnats, just to name a few. Place these traps three to five feet apart for maximum effectiveness and remember to replace them as they become full. A last line of defense is an insecticidal soap or oil spray for the specific pest. These must be sprayed on the pest directly to be effective. A v o i d spraying on really hot days, or dousing the plant, as it can cause damage to the plant itself. Olympians and Olympic Hopefuls Ride at Dacono BMX
By April Fordyce Blewett Dacono BMX Track is an exciting place to stop in and see. It’s a sport with heart, soul and adrenaline. From the moment you set your first foot and tire on this track you’ll feel the electricity of excitement. Some say home is where you lay your head. At Dacono BMX Track, home is where you ride. Several "big name" BMX riders call Dacono BMX home including USA BMX 2012 Olympian David Herman (right). He along with others are mentors to the younger kids. BMX became a part of the Olympics in 2008. Dacono BMX hosts many nationwide events. Collin "Crazy Legs" Hudson (bottom left and middle far right), is a Dacono BMX rider also. He is undoubtedly the fastest amateur on the planet some are saying! Collin just took his 4th consecutive World #1 title in the 16 Boys class in New Zealand, and we at Crupi could not be more proud of this guy! With a total of 5 World titles in a row, ( 4 on the 20” and 1 in Cruiser) a number of NAG #1 titles, and NAT #2 two years in a row this guy just can’t be beat. Not only is Collin Extremely talented, but he is one of the nicest most humble guys out on the track! Please join us in congratulating Collin on this HUGE accomplishment! Energy radiates from the moment the starting gate slams down in front of you and the pack of seven or more other racers, each blasting at a full sprint toward that first obstacle all way through the finish line. BMX racing gives you that rush of adrenaline you or your kids have been looking for.
BMX builds self-esteem, teaches goal setting and goal achieving, supports physical fitness, develops strong minds and bodies, encourages healthy self-discipline and provides the excitement of a rush that just can’t be beat. Check out their Facebook page for photos that can’t deny the impact the sport is having on kids in the Carbon Valley and surrounding areas. Where is this amazing action? Dacono BMX is a bicycle motocross track located at 2nd Street and Forest Ave, in Dacono, Colorado, just south of Hwy 52 and east of Colorado Blvd. It is one of 270 tracks across the US with over 1,000 members. Dacono BMX tracks has been in operation for the past 12 years and is sanctioned by the USA BMX and the American Bicycle Association. Photos taken from various Facebook pages Chris Schumacher has been managing the track for the past year. This amazing track is made better every day with the help of Ryan Dowd and James Shanks. Their passion is for more than just the sport. It is their desire to see everybody at the races. From the racers themselves to the fans that support them, these three are there to answer your questions, educate you on the sport and train you for competition. Boys and girls, men and women, from five to fifty-five, can race. This is a whole-family sport and is FUN for the whole family.

Eddie takes pride in sitting with those who are confused by all the wordy jargon and he simplifies the information and the options. Many times, if a client doesn’t qualify, for whatever reason, the typical mortgage company sends the client on his/ her way until they “fix” the problems. But usually the client doesn’t know how to fix it. Eddie gives you his time and offers all individuals the chance and the tools to create a step by step plan. From building or rebuilding your credit, to qualifying for the mortgage and ultimately, to walking through the front door of your new home. Eddie is there for you. Eddie has eighteen years in the mortgage industry. “I have helped hundreds of borrowers, that didn’t qualify initially, purchase a house. By giving people the information they need, I empower them to be in a position to buy a home. I’ll stick by them every step of the way,” he says. You'll most often hear people working their abdominal muscles and focusing on getting a 'six-pack', but don't forget to strengthen the many extensor muscles of your back, as they are equally important. Find out how to keep low back pain at bay with exercising, and how you can prevent low back pain if you take the time to do a few simple exercises to help strengthen and take the pressure off the back. Back pain can be caused by many different stressors including sitting for long periods of time, muscle strain, structural abnormalities, stress, and more. If you're suffering from back pain, be sure to ask your doctor if an exercise program is right for you. When back exercises are done in a gradual and controlled manner, important nutrients are distributed into the soft tissues and disc space, which helps to keep your back healthy. When these exercises are also done consistently, they can help prevent reoccurring back pain, weaknesses, and stiffness. The trouble is getting people to do exercises before the back pain starts. Prevention is the key and will help to alleviate a lot of the problems of lower back pain. Doing the right kinds of exercises is important, but especially for the lower back and core. This is one of the better explanations I've seen to describe the spine and the supporting muscles to help you understand this concept better. As Dr. Cooper, MD explains, "The spine is like a mast on a ship. The same way that a mast on a ship has all these ropes attached to it, the ropes are attached to the mast to help unload the mast so that the mast doesn't fall over and crack. A mast cannot support its own weight without the ropes. The same is true with the human spine. If you take the human spine out and put it on the table and you put some axial pressure on it, it can support about thirty-five pounds of pressure. We all weigh more than thirty-five pounds, so we rely on certain muscles that attach onto the spine to take the pressure off of the spine. When those muscles are weak or imbalanced, this leads to a lot of wear and tear within the spine. By getting the muscles right, we take the pressure off the spine and we make the spine a lot more durable".

Times Have Changed... Do You Need an Updated Look? I Can Help
Today’s real estate market represents one of the best opportunities to move up to the home you’ve always wanted. Maybe it is a larger home, new construction, a different neighborhood, or an acreage property. No matter what your definition of “move up” may be, what may have been out of reach can now be firmly within your grasp. Even though prices are on the rise, they are still below the highs, and interest rates are very attractive. If you wait, the price gap will likely widen. In general, prices in a given area tend to change by similar percentages. So, if you have a $200,000 home that changed by 5% over a period of time, that amounts to $10,000. A $300,000 home would have a difference of $15,000, so if you are owning the higher priced property, your gain if $5,000 more. The timing of your move can be stressful, which is part of the reason you need an experienced Realtor to guide you through the process. The ideal situation is where you sell your existing home and buy the replacement property on the same day. This makes for only one move, and only owning one property at a time. For this to happen, everything has to line up including having the replacement home you want available and a seller that is willing to have that sale contingent upon your other sale. If that doesn’t happen, the decision is between buying first, then selling the old home (easiest on the move, but more stressful financially), or selling first and making an interim move before getting into your new home. We’ve helped many clients go through this very process, so we can discuss the details with you to see what is best in your individual situation. This is the time to invest in your future and invest in your lifestyle. Firestone, Mead Partnering
In a reply letter to the Town of Mead dated July 15, 2013, Firestone Mayor Chad Auer continued to address a cooperative land use and growth management agreement between the towns of Firestone and Mead as needs and demands for municipal services increase. Discussion on the topic started earlier this year when the two communities began talking about establishing boundaries for where the two communities would grow. Firestone drafted a Coordinated Planning

Agreement to Mead on March 18. However, in Mead’s correspondence dated June 18, the agreement was substantially different than the one Firestone provided months earlier. By entering into an agreement, the Firestone Board of Trustees feels that both communities will be afforded the flexibility to communicate and coordinate in accordance with their respective master plans as they overlap and intersect. “Firestone has continued to maintain transparency regarding its planned land development and is committed to a land use philosophy that embraces property owner rights and capitalism,” said Firestone Mayor
2 years ago on August 24th, we were blessed with a beautiful baby, Luke Wesley Brunsman. He has blossomed into a funny, loving, silly, bright, clumsy, and very special little boy. Lukie, we love you very much! Mommy, Daddy, Eric, Aba, Papa, Grandma, Grandpa, Bubby, Kiki, TiTi, Gavin, Brinn, and Uncle Bill Chad Auer. “It is clear that our two communities have very different philosophies and perspectives regarding our land use. Firestone continues to value flexibility and responsiveness to changing market conditions, and I don’t believe the agreement provided by the Town of Mead offers these critical components. At this point, this opposition will make any agreement difficult without compromising Firestone’s vision.” Firestone has had good experience working with similar agreements in its relationship with the City of Longmont, and is pursuing a similar model with the Weld County Commissioners.

Choosing Interior Colors
Choosing colors for the rooms in your home doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are a few tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years that hopefully can make it easier for those facing indecision. Whether you are moving to a new house, doing a complete remodel or repainting, it is best to start with a color scheme. Choose your paint colors after you know the colors of your furniture, fabrics & window coverings. Your walls and trim will be the backdrop for your furniture, accessories and drapes or blinds and you can draw colors from what you’ve already chosen. Paint is much easier and less expensive to change than a new sofa should you change your mind. When confronted by the thousands of color options at the paint store the first thing many of us do is panic. Don’t. It’s only paint. And while it may seem easy to turn to the whites and beiges section, you’ll find numerous shades there from which to choose! Paint decks from the paint store are a huge help to getting started. Pick a few shades from the color families you think you like the most and order samples so you can live with them for a while. You can order large card samples to tape on your walls at different heights. We like to apply samples on poster board so you can move them far from each other and on various walls so that the colors

don’t influence each other and so that you can experience them in natural l i g h t i n g throughout the day and in each individual room’s lighting at night. Factor in the colors of your furniture, artwork, fabrics, wood and flooring as well when deciding. Trim colors are most often whites or off whites and look fine. They are often the same throughout the house but another good look is to choose a contrasting color from the walls in the room you are painting. Choosing the same color as your wall color in a different sheen or a darker value a few shades from the wall color is a nice look for trim as well. We recommend semigloss or even gloss for a pop. Ceilings are usually lighter than the walls or sometimes the same colors as the walls, but appear to be lighter because the light reflects off them more than the walls. You will find a good selection at your paint store formulated just for ceilings from which to choose. If you are still in doubt, ask your painting contractor. The World Will Be Won Through Starting New Churches
area, but to leave and start churches in other areas! But these converts were comfortable in Jerusalem, and God wanted them to spread the Gospel throughout the world and not just in Jerusalem! So what did God do? He allowed for persecution to come into Jerusalem to the Christians to accomplish His will that we see in Acts 1:8. Go into all the world...do not be comfortable where you are at, you are not accomplishing my purposes by staying in one place. As we get out of your comfort zone and try to reach others, it makes us to be more understanding of the true needs of society. It also helps us to see the true needs of the comfortable church. If we do not outreach to the communities around us, if we do not get uncomfortable, then we’ll end up in the same place this church did in Jerusalem....Starting new churches helps breaks this comfort and complacency! As we shake up our congregations by sending people out, it encourages them to get uncomfortable, but it also encourages the mother church to be uncomfortable. It helps them to realize what true ministry is. The more we extend Believers to different areas, the greater impact we have to those who are farther away from the church. We cannot expect the world to come to us and feel comfortable. We must go to them. The best way to go to them is to start new churches and have a mass effect of spreading the Gospel. Pastor Jason Kokenzie would like to invite you to attend services at Firestone Baptist Church. The church meets at Carbon Valley Academy, 4040 Coriolis Way Frederick, CO 80504. Sunday School - 9:00AM Morning Worship- 10:00AM. Wednesday In-home Bible Study - 6:45PM. Contact information: FirestoneBaptist.com / 303-736-9959.
Prescription Drug Abuse
Sometimes it is a very common thing which creates the greatest risk. In the next two articles I will be discussing several commonly used medications which are creating tremendous problems in our country and are leading to vast sideeffects that are often life-threatening. Next month I’ll discuss a medication which is actually available over the counter, but the topic of this issue is a category of I suppose from the title you might think I am prescription-only medications called opiates. crazy! HEALTHY What are “Genetically Modified Organisms” (1st article in a series)
I recently read a book entitled “The Poison Planters” written by Charles Sutherland. Although written as a fictitious story, the facts presented regarding Genetically Modified Organisms are true. I recommend this book for anyone concerned about the food supply around the world, but especially in the US and for anyone struggling with a health issue or concern for the health issues that have exploded around us. It is available on Amazon.com for $6.95. When I read this book and realized what Genetically Modified Organisms really meant to every person’s health on this planet, it made me mad! But then I realized if I just found out about this that most people are just totally unaware of what is happening to our food supply and subsequently to our health. This series of articles is my attempt to educate you as quickly as possible although you could spend literally years researching this issue! The push for genetically modified food and biotechnology is being driven by the Monsanto Company around the world. However, other chemical companies have gotten in on the deal as there are billions of dollars to be made. These other companies include DuPont, Dow and Syngenta. These companies originated as chemical companies so what do they have to do with food? Monsanto has been producing herbicides since the 1940’s. They were responsible for producing the Polychorinated Biphenuls (PCB’s) that were ultimately found to be carcinogenic. Monsanto is also responsible for producing the product called “Round Up” in 1970 that is available worldwide as an herbicide for weed control. Monsanto has convinced farmers, maintenance companies and homeowners that Round Up is safe for people, animals and the environment. The issue with Round Up for farm use is that it kills all plants not just weeds. In order to maintain the farm market for Monsanto, they had to figure out a way to be able to sell Round Up to farmers with no crop damage - hence the birth of biotechnology and genetically modified food. The biotech companies (those listed above) led by Monsanto have devised a technique where they blast a gene from the chemical Round Up into the DNA of the particular food seed to make the crop “Round Up” ready. That means that the crop will resist being sprayed by the chemical that kills the weeds. Round Up is a toxin which is being literally blasted into our food’s seed DNA. The first question that comes to mind is what other damage is done by this process on a cellular level? Next, if Round Up is a toxin and they are forcing this toxin into our food seed DNA, what is happening at the cellular level for the seed to protect itself? What affect will this modified seed and the toxin itself have in humans and animals when ingested? There has not been enough testing to know, but with that said, the following foods are in jeopardy: Corn, Soybeans, cotton, sugar beets, canola, and wheat. These are the seeds that are “Round Up” ready and first put on the market in 1992. The chief ingredient in Round Up is glyphosate. The Mother Earth News reports that an article in the Toxicology Journal shows that the glyphosate or glufosinate in herbicides could cause DNA damage, endocrine disruption and even death in humans. Reuters Newsletter dated 4/26/13 says that “glyphosate disrupts normal body functions and may induce disease. This manifests slowly over time and can cause Parkinson’s disease, infertility, and cancers. Inflammation causes cellular damage through-out the body.” This chemical was developed to kill cells – any cells. If you Google GMO Crops in the US you will see that back in 2003 63% of all farmland was dedicated to GMO crops. What do you think that percentage is today? This means that we are actually getting a double dose of the cell killing chemical in Round Up. It is in the seed and ultimately in the plant so that the plant can resist the field that is sprayed with Round Up. Not only is it in the food but now sprayed on the food. Think about all the health issues we have in our country today that we didn’t have 20 or 30 years ago and ask yourself why? Could it be caused by Genetically Modified food? You might also ask yourself “how did this happen in the United States? Check out the next articles for answers to these questions and more. Dee West is a partner in Rocky Plains Quality Meats. Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Loving Intention According to traditional Chinese medicine, each organ is not only identified with its physical structure and function, but also with seasons, emotions, color, sound, and elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood). Since it is summer, the season of growth, I’d like to dedicate this article to the related organs: Heart, Pericardium, Small Intestine and San Jiao. All together, these organs correspond with summer, the fire element, the color red, the sound of laughter, and the ability to communicate and authentically connect with people. The Fire element corresponds to the more active and social aspects in life, quite the opposite of the Water element that is associated with the season of winter and being more introspective and quiet. We are all familiar with these two very distinctly different experiences and see that both are just as important as the other. There are also those moments where we feel more outgoing in the winter, or more introspective in the summer, depending upon life circumstances. In any event, balance is key. When we are in touch with what the seasons have to offer, and correspond to them accordingly and openly, we then know that the organ(s) associated are also in balance. When summer time comes around we usually experience that increased desire to socialize, dance and play. The Heart feels more “open” to possibilities. Also, the Heart has a strong connection with the mind, however in this case the mind is not thought of as just brain function but more of the relationship between the two. In Chinese medicine this relationship between the Heart and the mind is referred to as Shen. The Shen is revealed through the eyes, we can see how someone is feeling on a mental/emotional level just by looking into their eyes. In addition to the Heart, there are three other organs involved within the Fire element. The one physically closest to the Heart is the Pericardium, an organ that is seen as the “Heart Wrapper” and functionally protects the Heart. As we look at our own “Heart Wrapper” we can ask ourselves, are we protecting ourselves too much / not enough or is there an appropriate balance of both? Next, the Small Intestine is the Yang paired organ to the Heart. All organs have a paired organ, and the physically hollow organs are considered Yang, the more solid organs considered Yin. The main function of the Small Intestine is to receive food

from the stomach and further digest and absorb it and send the residue to the large intestine and urinary bladder. Essentially, the Small Intestine “separates the pure from the turbid”. On an emotional level, the ability to provide ourselves with clear boundaries and know when to appropriately separate emotionally also pertains to the Small Intestine. For example, sometimes there is a need to separate the many different roles we play such as in the work place and at home. If it is difficult to separate each role appropriately and find ourselves mixing the roles together, the purity of theses roles dissipates and becomes muddy and unclear. The last organ happens to be the only one not recognized in Western medicine, and therefore has no direct english translation. It is the San Jiao, the Yang paired organ to the Pericardium. There are three jiaos; upper, middle and lower, each pertaining to the organs in those locations of the torso. The image of a pot of rice cooking seems to best convey the work of the San Jiao; the lower jiao, or area below the umbilicus, represents the fire below the cook pot. The middle jiao, approximately between the umbilicus and below the sternum, represents the bottom of the cook pot containing the rice and water. The upper jiao, located in the chest, is the area where the steam rises up within the cook pot just under the lid, to cook the rice. In a very small nutshell, the San Jiao connects all the organs, with a strong connection to water; (the human body is about 72% water) “the San Jiao is the irrigation official who builds waterways”. This function of essentially keeping proper functioning and communication between the organs might be translated emotionally to that aspect that keeps us physically and spiritually connected with the people close to us and with the community. Together, the organs related to the Fire element help us to keep our actions, words and thoughts clear and full of loving intention. Before engaging in a “serious” conversation or any other action it seems important to ask the question of intention... what are my intentions? do my intentions come from a place of love? compassion? If they don’t, then why bother? Social connectedness is one of the most important factors in keeping the Heart healthy. When we are able to do so with loving intention, we are witness to the feeling as it vibrates throughout our life and into the people around us and into the community. “When you have the courage to open your heart completely to love, a miracle happens. You start perceiving the reflection of your love in everything. Then eating, walking, talking, singing, dancing, working, playing - everything you do becomes a ritual of love.” - Don Miguel Ruiz Daisy Lear, MSOM, Dipl.Ac., L.Ac., practices Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in Longmont. Cruising on the River! River cruising is hot and there's one for every taste, style and budget. With nearly a dozen new river boats being built, it's the latest trend. Statistics indicate that most river cruise passengers have already taken an ocean cruise and they are ready to move inland and see European cities upclose and personal. What are the advantages of a European river cruise? While cruise ships only touch the edges of continents, river boats take you to the very heart of magnificent cities and ancient towns. Quietly glide past hillside vineyards, medieval castles and historic monuments. Disembark and walk right into town for a lunch at a local café or experience that local beer or wine. Pack light. Not just for the airline requirements but for convenience. There are no formal nights. Men need only a collared shirt and sport coat. Women can leave their long dresses and high heels at home. Attire is country club casual even at dinner. Acknowledge your physical limitations. Cobblestone streets, walkways and stairs can be a bit tricky to navigate. Europe doesn't subscribe to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pace yourself accordingly. Some of the river boats do not have elevators, so make sure the boat you choose has one if you need one. The river boats usually only have 3-4 decks. Once ashore, many river cruise lines offer an easy-paced walking tour option. Wine and dine. Unlike cruise ships, river boats have "open seating." Stroll into the dining room for a leisurely buffet breakfast and some made to order specialties. Lunch is fairly relaxed, too, as it is mainly buffetstyle dining. Dinner times can vary based on the

timing of the shore excursions, so check your daily planner. Some cruise lines offer wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Cash is king. Make a list of the countries you will visit and find a local bank that will order your foreign currency. Mainly, you'll need Euros. But if you can get any of the other currencies (and there are quite a few on the lower Danube River) you can avoid the high commission exchange fees. Of course, the boat's front desk will also exchange currency, but there are some limitations. Tipping at the end of your cruise is expected to be in Euros on some cruise lines. Weather. If you travel on the rivers in the spring or fall, there will certainly be a variance in temperatures and precipitation. Bring that light rain gear and a folding umbrella. If you must carry belongings, a tote bag is suggested. Stop and smell the roses. At least once on your river cruise, get up and outside just before sunrise. A fog-like mist rises from the river, birds slowly begin to chirp and the river looks like liquid silver. It's a notto-be-missed experience. You’ll see swans lazily floating alongside the boat sometimes. Watching the activity along the shore is always fascinating. Even though it seems this is a slow paced, non active cruise, it can be quite the opposite with a chance to hike and bike around the area. Taking a European river cruise? Investigate your options and try to include a few extra days on land to fully appreciate the cities along the paths of the great rivers of Europe. Arrive early or stay late. You've come so far for this river cruise, it seems like a waste if you don't spend at least two full days in either your arrival or departure city. 2013 Golf Classic Perfect Opportunity for Small Business
Is your Small Business on the Schedule? The Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce’s golf classic is set for the afternoon of Friday, August 16th at Saddleback. We have an abundance of large business concerns and individuals who have committed their generosity by being either a Benefactor or in-kind sponsor. Since this event is the primary fund raiser for our chamber, we are grateful to those sponsors. We are especially grateful to Carbon Valley Medical Center for once again being our Premier Sponsor. This will be an all afternoon tournament and one of the largest events of the year. The tournament is designed to honor those businesses that have paid to be a member and a sponsor of the Chamber. By having an afternoon event that will extend into the evening we will create an opportunity for networking with all businesses, both big and small. We’ll start with lunch at noon and conclude with dinner, awards and prizes. Most small businesses cannot close their doors at noon and take the afternoon off to play golf. Most are open at least until 5 pm. That’s why we’ll have a hearty steak dinner with live music starting about 6 pm. Your small business can wrap up the week, close the door and come to dinner for the evening. The networking environment during dinner will be very conducive for a small business owner to meet and greet the 144 participating golfers. You may shake hands and hand out information about your business. You may even contribute gifts, coupons, discount offers and swag about your business for the raffle and prizes. Contact Rachel Flutcher, 303-833-5933 rachel@carbonvalleychamber.com if you would like more information on how you can be a part of this great event. Provide for the success of your business by being present and participating. I encourage participation by all chamber members, not necessarily as a golfer, rather as an engaged and enthusiastic contributor to the Chamber and to the community. We plan to see you then!

carnival and more. Even a stilt walker made his way through the crowd showing off his patriotic attire. The classic car show grew in size and included approximately 35 classic cars and trucks for people to view in detail along the Firestone Trail. Outstanding live entertainment throughout the day included the blazing intensity of the Rebecca Folsom Band, rock, country and bluegrass sounds from Coral Creek, and a souped-up mix of blues, soul and rock from Chris Daniels & the Kings. The evening concert in the park also packed in the crowds with attendees listening and dancing to the music of Buckstein. A special treat was Abraham and Mary Lincoln visiting with the crowd and then reciting the Gettysburg Address before the night sky is lit with a spectacular fireworks display. The 4th at Firestone has become not only Firestone’s premier annual community event, but also a regional attraction to celebrate America’s birthday. The event has continued to increase

Approximately 85 participants entered the parade for a great mix of floats, vehicles, music, dance numbers, classic cars, horses and more. The main event included a showcase of 92 business, children, nonprofit, art and food vendors. Children scoured the climbing wall throughout the day, showing their skills in the air. Additional activities included inflatables, mini golf, games, a bungee trampoline, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, caricature artist, balloon twisting, a

Carbon Valley Relay for Life Raises $71,000
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Carbon Valley was a huge success raising over $71,000.00. This is an all-time high! There were 57 Cancer Survivors and their Caregivers to start the Relay off with the Celebration lap. The 30 teams took their team laps and then the 351 registered participants and friends, families and the community started walking all night. The only stop in the walking was for everyone to take time to reflect during the Luminaria Ceremony at 9:00. During this ceremony, we remember those we have lost and honor those who are still fighting their battle with Cancer. The Luminaria bags on Hope Hill are lit to spell Cure, which is why we do this event, to find a Cure. The hundreds of Luminaria bags around the path that had been purchased and decorated with the names of people that are being remembered and honored were also lit to light the path all night for the walkers. There was music, a gymnastics performance and Martial Arts display. There were many activities, such as a Silent Auction, a car bashing, Mr. Relay contest, cake walks, Bingo, and games and food at many of the team campsites. Olive Garden brought spaghetti meals for 300 people with the donations going to the Relay. They also provided the meal for the Survivors and their caregivers the night before the Relay. Chick-fil-A brought late night snack for the all-night walkers. Boy Scout troop 262 made pancakes early in the morning so everyone could enjoy a nice hot breakfast. Everyone had a good time, even the rain could not dampen the excitement. What a wonderful way to Celebrate American Cancer Society’s 100th Birthday!!! Thank You to all who helped make this such a successful event.
