Jeanine’s business really didn’t start based on a desire to start a business. After the birth of their children, Jeanine Barnes worked nights and her husband (of 32 years), Jerry, often traveled making daycare difficult to find. After several failed attempts to find adequate daycare, they decided Jeanine should quit her job and be a stay-at-home mom.

That’s when friends of hers asked if she could watch their children and before she knew it, the stay-at-home mom became a small business owner.

It did not take Jeanine long to realize just how much she enjoyed doing daycare and decided to become a licensed daycare provider and participate in the various education sessions provided by the county.

That was over twenty-six years ago and numerous children have come and gone. Many of those kids have gone on to become married and have children of their own. It’s amazing to see a daycare child you had ten years ago notice you in the grocery store and come over to say hi. That’s when you realize that you had a small part in making that child into a fine adult which gives you satisfaction of a job well done.

Ranchero’s Restaurant

By Heidi Kerr-Schlaefer Good Mexican food in a fun, family-friendly environment, that’s the goal of Ranchero’s Restaurant, and they strive to accomplish this mission each and every day. The restaurant had a change of ownership in December 2012, when brothers Alberto and Santos Mendez bought the establishment.

The brothers were the former owners of a Mexican restaurant in Platteville that they sold eight years ago. They have brought their wealth of food and restaurant knowledge to Ranchero’s, along with many family members who work for them.

“It’s a family business. A lot of nieces and nephews and daughters work here,” said Maria Mendez, restaurant manager. “We also like to keep it a family-kind of place for customers where they feel like they can laugh loudly and fun.” Plus, they've opened an outdoor dining patio.

Since the change of ownership, there have been many changes to the menu. Mendez says their food has a central, south Mexican flare with a focus on grilled meats.

“We like everything on our grill. It’s still shredded, but putting it on the grill gives it more flavor and that’s what we are known for,” said Mendez. “What our guys like to do is make things a little different and they know how to combine flavors. Some of our combinations may sound weird, but they taste really good and have become popular.”

One unique plate that has become a customer’s favorite is Fajita Ranchero featuring chicken, shrimp, steak and bacon with shredded cheese on top. Another interesting entree is a grilled chicken breast with onion, shrimp, cheese sauce, pineapple and cherries. “It has that sweet and salty taste,” said Mendez.

In honor of their next door neighbor on Hwy 66, Ranchero’s has developed a John Deere plate, featuring grilled chicken or steak, rice, spinach and mushrooms covered in cheese.

Scott’s wife wears several hats; wife and parent, plus she is a kindergarten teacher in the St. Vrain School District and a great help in the business. His two daughters do all the graphic design, advertising, and also help in the office. Colorado Roof Toppers is a local business in Mead that believes in hiring local workers. Some of Scott’s crew has worked with Colorado Roof Toppers for as long as twenty years.

Scott Bart started Colorado Roof Toppers in 1980 because he was unable to find employment with a roofing company that was committed to the same high standard of quality that he was. It seemed most of the roofing companies were more like sales organizations with their eyes on the profit instead of on customer satisfaction.

Scott personally provides individual estimations and supervision on every job. He believes their quality of work should stand above all other roofing companies. Scott says, “Colorado Roof Toppers is a small, hands-on, local roofing company. We do one job at a time and we get it right.”

The Chamber is currently looking for a business or businesses to sponsor future B.A.H events. In the future the Chamber hopes to promote and organize a B.A.H. event every other month. M.A.C.C. Bylaw Update

During the M.A.C.C. Board meeting on July 10th, the board voted to ratify the current M.A.C.C. bylaws. These updated bylaws were created in the hopes of aiding the Town of Mead and the local community in their economic objectives and to better serve the M.A.C.C. members. The new bylaws will be available on the Chamber website no later than August 30th.

Merchandise Storage

In an effort to conserve funds the Chamber Board has voted to close out the Chamber storage unit. As of July 10th, the storage unit has been cleaned out and the contents have been relocated. A member of the Board has agreed to store the contents for the Chamber free of charge. The decision will save the Chamber almost $100 per month.

Now that the contents of the storage unit have been relocated the Chamber will be doing an inventory to determine and track the merchandise owned by the Chamber. This will better serve the Chamber and its members when events take place and members need to borrow these items.

Defining the Future Direction of the Chamber

As all of you are aware the Chamber has undergone a major revitalization over the past 9 months. With this new direction it has been determined that the Chamber needs to reevaluate its branding and logo in an effort to gain more recognition for the Chamber and its objective of assisting the Mead Area in growing.

With the idea of updated branding and a renewed purpose there are some questions to be answered.

• What are your expectations for the Chamber?

• What do you perceive as the future direction of the Chamber?

• How often would you like to see events held?

• Are you interested in joining an event or planning committee?

• Are you willing to assist as an outreach ambassador (i.e. are you willing to visit local businesses and discuss the advantages of Chamber membership)?

• What are your thoughts for branding and promoting the Chamber in the future?

• Do you have any logo ideas or preferences?

The mission of the Mead Children’s Choir is to provide a venue for the local community’s children to learn music, cultivate the human spirit, improve on musical talents, and experience the joy that comes from singing together in a choir. Blackwood Legacy Quartet in Concert

Back by popular demand, the Blackwood Legacy Quartet, direct from Nashville, will be presenting another special concert event in our community this August.

Boasting an unbroken lineage to the Dove and Grammyaward winning Blackwood Brothers, the Mansion Records artists link the best of Southern Gospel’s traditional sound with today’s newer Country gospel and worship music. The Blackwood Legacy Quartet will be in concert on Friday, August 16, 7:00 p.m., at Abundant Life Church located at 4380 Highway 66 (3/10ths of a mile east of I-25 on Hwy 66, just east of the Red Rooster restaurant). Admission is free and an offering will be received.

The Blackwood Legacy Quartet has an all-star line-up. Lead singer Daniel Childs is the greatgrandson to Blackwood Brothers’ founding father, Roy Blackwood. Spokane native Luke Yates sings baritone with the group, and is also an award-winning pianist. Tenor singer Paul Secord, formerly a featured singer for Disney World, is one of the most talented in Gospel Music today.

Group owner and bass singer, Rick Price, was originally a protégée of the late Cecil Blackwood.

He began his 35-year career singing with the Blackwood Brothers in 1977, and was eventually inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame with the legendary group. Performing since 2001, The Blackwood Legacy Quartet was signed to Mansion Records in 2010, and continues the grand tradition of gospel music, performing nearly 250 dates annually nationwide.
