A Country Blessing By: Tiffany J. Holcomb

fter suffering a devastating head on accident involving a drunk driver, Caroline Riepler, urned to her life-long love of crafting and sewing to help her get passed her depression; help her heal and embrace the world. In 2004, she began sewing and creating products for wholesale/retail market and Western Border and Company, LLC. was born. After two additional accidents, the business was off to a slow start, however through pure determination and ambition Caroline is making a name for herself and her company in a big way with the support of her family. The business has been a huge blessing for Caroline, professionally and personally. Turning her physical and emotional pain into something positive has given her the opportunities that many only dream off. Caroline had not only been able to use her creativity to build a successful business that she loves, but more importantly to be there for her husband, Daniel and their son and to cherish every s i n g l e moment together. Upon meeting and falling in love in Switzerland, you might be hard pressed to imagine, the couple would make their home in Mead, however, they wanted to build their life near family. Caroline is part of a close knit family, firmly rooted in the area, her parents owned and operated the Black Bear

Caroline Riepler, Owner

Inn in Lyons, up until recently, when they retired and sold the business. It is a safe bet to assume that the entrepreneurial spirit her parents passed on and the love and support of her husband and son are what helped Caroline build Western Border and Company, LLC. and get through her pain. With the help of a sewing contractor, Caroline and Western Border and Company designs and manufacturers’ apparel and accessories for children, as well as new home décor directly from the headquarters in Mead. While customers can order directly from the website, www.westernborderandco. com, the company also sells their products to a number of stores within the United States and Internationally and is proud to announce that they will also have

a booth at the 2015 Downtown Mead Farmers’ Market. Western Border and Company is starting to get some attention within the media and has been featured in Country People Magazine. Country Music Star, Craig Campbell’s daughters and World Champion Barrel Racer, Fallon Taylor have been photographed with Western Border and Company gear. Even though, Caroline and Western Border and Company have found success, Caroline still has other goals on the horizon that she would like to achieve. One day, Caroline would like to write a children’s book, publish a cookbook combined with some of her father’s (the former Master Chef of the Black Bear Inn) favorite recipes and she has aspirations of designing her own fabric for the company. Visit the Western Border and Company website to sign up for email notifications, updates and coupons or read Caroline’s blog for DIY ideas, articles, recipes and more. A LETTER FROM MAYOR GARY SHIELDS Fishing Derby, Summer Festival, Community Garage Sale Dear Residents, There are a few events and happenings around town that I would like to bring to your attention for the month of June and throughout the summer season. First and foremost, it is very important to recognize that with the summer season, our children will be out and about during all times of the day. Please be aware of this while driving and pay extra attention in the neighborhoods and around the parks. The town has received many complaints of speeding in the last couple of months and I would urge you all to allow a couple of extra minutes to get to where you are going. As I am sure you have already noticed, work along Welker Avenue has began with the replacement of the water line and then will

follow with the entire road and walkway being replaced and expanded from Main Street to just west of 7th Street. I realize that this is an inconvenience to those who utilize this route and also to those who live along the detour route. It is important to remember that the inconvenience will be short-lived and that the benefits will be enjoyed by all for many years to come. The annual Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 6th from 8am to noon at the Mead Ponds just west of town. This event is a fun time for the entire family and is ran in conjunction with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife free fishing weekend. There is no need for a fishing license to enjoy this event and a free lunch will be provided. On Sunday, June 7th, I am pleased to announce that the Mead Farmers Market will be held in and around the Town Hall Park.

.

This event will be held each Sunday from noon to 4pm throughout the summer and harvest season. I would like to encourage you all to attend as your participation will guarantee the success and future availability of this event. On Saturday, June 27th, the town will recognize the day as the Mead Community Garage Sale Day. The town will provide the advertising so that all you need to be included is to let us know that you are participating and then set up at your home as you normally would. What a great way to get others to visit the town and declutter at the same time. For additional information on any of these events, please contact the town hall personnel at 970-535-4477. Sincerely, Gary Shields, Town of Mead Mayor

ith a love for cooking and BBQ, Brian Anderson and his family opened Devil Dogs BBQ and have quickly gained a following in the area. Devil Dogs BBQ uses their own rubs, BBQ sauce recipes and scratch made sides that highlight the love and care that they put into the food they serve their customers. When opening, Devil Dogs BBQ in Mead, one of the first things that Brian searched for was a whiskey made in Colorado. To his surprise, Brian found Black Canyon Distillery practically in his own backyard of the Town of Mead. In experimenting with Black Canyon Whiskey in their BBQ sauce, Brian found that the whiskey complemented the BBQ flavors. Devil Dogs BBQ, not only uses Black Canyon Whiskey in their BBQ sauces, but also in their ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauces. The decision to use a local product to create the BBQ sauce for Devil Dogs BBQ has turned into a mutually beneficial relationship between Devil Dogs BBQ and Black Canyon Distillery. So when Fred & Susan Lesnick, owners of Black Canyon Distillery were visiting Spirit Hound Distillers in Lyons, they commented to the staff about the food truck in the parking lot and learned that the food truck was permanently located there. Almost immediately, Susan reached out to Brian at Devil Dogs BBQ, and within a few hours of speaking,

Brian called Susan and expressed interest in her idea of collaboration between Black Canyon Distillery and Devil Dogs BBQ. Customers visiting and touring the distillery were consistently commenting on the lack of food options in the area and Devil Dogs BBQ was looking for a new location. It’s been a perfect match. Currently, Black Canyon Distillery and Devil Dogs BBQ are open 11:00 am – 8:00 pm (Friday & Saturday), 11:00 am – 6:00 pm (Sunday) and 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (Monday), call for details on extended summer hours. Black Canyon Distillery and Devil Dogs BBQ are located at 13710 Deere Court, Longmont (a.k.a. Mead). To find out more about Black Canyon Distillery and their spirits visit www. BlackCanyonDistillery. com, or to see what is on the menu at Devil Dogs BBQ visit www. DevilDogsBBQ.com. If you enjoy whiskey, you cannot pass up the chance to try Black Canyon Distillery’s line up of original Corn Whiskey: Winter - with hints of cinnamon and maple. Also try their Mayhem Creek Pepper Vodka – with Jalapeno, Serrano, Fresno, and Habanero peppers. Nothing complements Black Canyon Distillery’s spirits more than a Brisket Burger and BBQ Nachos (with scratch made cheese sauce) or homemade whiskey ice cream. There is something heartwarming about local businesses working together to support each other. Black Canyon Distillery and Devil Dogs BBQ is proof that joint ventures can create great opportunities.

Maybe we will do a race for each grade level.” Shields stated. “As with anything, there is always a learning curve. But I think everyone had a lot of fun and next year will be even better.”
