Town of Mead Welcomes Ismael Aldan

Isaac’s Fund Check Presentation

Ismael, “Ish”, was hired in December as the Town’s new Code Enforcement / Animal Control Officer. We’re excited to have him here in a full time capacity. Ish was born and raised in Chicago, IL and in the country of Guatemala. After meeting his wife, Leticia, who is a Colorado native, he relocated to Colorado. They have two wonderful sons, Matias, 9, and Jovan, 7, and a beautiful niece, Melissa, who also lives with them. Ish coaches youth organized sports and enjoys music and art. Most of all he enjoys spending time with his amazing family. Ish is looking forward to serving the Town of Mead and developing great relationships with the community. You can contact Ish at ialdana@townofmead.org.

On December 6th at the Town of Mead Chili Cook Off, the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce presented the Crane family and Isaac’s Fund with a check for the proceeds from Isaac’s Fund Chili Cook Off and Silent Auction for $5,503. Isaac Crane was diagnosed with SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) Type 1, at the age of 4 months. SMA is the number one genetic killer of infants, affecting approximately 1 in 10,000 babies. SMA affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, and breath. It does not affect a person's cognition. Isaac's medical team gave him a prognosis of 1-2 years. He has spent almost two months at Children's Hospital in Aurora since his diagnosis. At ten months old, Isaac breaths with the help of a bi-pap machine and oxygen almost 24 hours a day. He is fed through a g-tube, and is only able to move his eyes and forearms voluntarily. He is also a very happy baby, who laughs at his sister, smiles at everyone, and communicates with his eyes. Isaac's mother, Jenna, resigned her position at work in order to care for him and to spend as much time with the family as possible. His father, Jeremiah, worked as a stay at home dad, caring for Isaac and his big sister Natalie. The Cranes are extremely grateful to the town of Mead Chamber of Commerce for hosting the Chili Cook Off, as well as for the generosity of family, friends, neighbors, and strangers, for making it possible for Jenna to stay home from work and enjoy the time they have been given with Isaac. For more information on SMA, visit cureSMA.org. For more information on Isaac, or to donate to the fund for his care, visit www.GoFundMe.com/agbytg.

Exciting News for 2015!

The Downtown Revitalization Committee and the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce are collaborating in creating a new farmers market in downtown Mead. We are trying to assess the level of interest of consumers and vendors in and around our community. Our idea comes from other small towns that have successfully created a link between local Colorado producers, artisans, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and the consumer. This would provide an opportunity to bring the people of the community together to stimulate the local economy; create awareness of local growers and strive to provide foundational support for Colorado growers who impact the Mead area. Cooperation and community pride are the keys to our success Starting January 1, a consumer and a vendor survey will be available online at www. townofmead.org and www.meadchamberofcommerce.com and printed copies will be in the Town Hall Lobby. We are requesting your thoughts and seek your interest in our efforts for a Downtown Mead Farmers Market in these surveys. We will also be looking for volunteers and sponsors for the market.

1 Mom’s Career Quest Blog January Being an Entrepreneur Parent by Shawna Heikkila I’ve always been an entrepreneur in business; I gathered information, analyzed and deliberated, listened to my intuition, and then took action. I was courageous and bold! I took personal responsibility…I created my own pathway…and because of that I reaped the rewards of business and financial success. When I became a mother, initially, I didn’t think to apply the above to my parenting journey. I had a couple challenging years once Isabella (my first daughter) learned how to talk. I’d read a lot of parenting books but didn’t listen to my intuition to discern what might be right for my family & children. I was afraid to try certain ideas because I didn’t want to error. I knew I lacked leadership skills when it came to parenting (yet I knew I was a leader), and I knew why I lacked them ~ I was new at this “gig” and I was sooo afraid to “screw her up.” Now that didn’t make me a bad parent. I was a great parent; I was always available, I had the time for her and was determined, maybe devoted is a better word to raising an emotionally healthy, wealthy, happy, sovereign, self-reliant, conscious-creating child. I wanted to support & cultivate her passions and encourage her to follow them. I wanted to inspire her to be responsible & respectful, with the key word being INSPIRE, not force, coerce, or manipulate… or even reward (always). Being an avid student of personal development, one day it hit me. Why not employ my personal development principles to my parenting?? After all they are based on Universal Law or Laws of God. I began to do this (and am still on the journey), and not only did my parenting path become more clear, but I became more confident in me. The point that I am making is that in order to be a “good” parent you must gather information (be open & humble), analyze and deliberate, listen to your intuition, and then take action. Be courageous and bold! Take personal responsibility for your failures, and count your wins…create your own pathway, and employ a trial and error policy to success. There is not a one size fits all for all families. Author Bio (pictured above): Shawna Heikkila lives in Ogden Utah with her husband and blended family of four. She is passionate about personal development and loves running her home-based business around her families “every need” (no I don’t do everything for them, but I am committed to being available for them). She has a deep-desire to INSPIRE other moms to work at home therefore being available for their kids and families. Visit her website: www. 9Health Topic of the Month Celebrations and Resolutions With the end of the year upon us, it’s a time to reflect and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished throughout the year. A time to rejoice in yourself, your family, your health successes, how well you did with your 2014 New Year’s resolutions and all your other accomplishments. It’s also a great time to begin thinking about your 2015 goals, plans and resolutions. As you begin to think about making your New Year’s resolutions, think simple. Studies show that the brain can’t handle too many goals at one time. This may help explain why it’s a challenge to follow through when you’re trying to accomplish several complex health-related resolutions all at once. Think about this – you make a resolution to cut out several foods from your diet, drastically lowering your calorie intake. Then you decide to take on an entirely new exercise routine to lose weight and get in better shape. But when you make a lot of dramatic changes at the same time, you are bound to lose focus and not be able to accomplish one or more of your resolutions. However, there are steps you can take to help increase the odds of succeeding in and celebrating your resolutions. 1) Set reachable expectations and celebrate the accomplishments. Defined and manageable goals are the basis for being the most successful at reaching your goals. 2) Make your changes slowly. Succeeding with a new healthy lifestyle occurs best when it becomes your way of life. This means there is no hurry and no finish line. 3) Take baby steps. If your goal is to cut out foods from your diet and lower your calories, start off by limiting the items from your diet that you will miss the least and adding the healthiest foods you like the best. Once you get used to this, gradually add in other things from your resolution list. 4) Be willing to make adjustments to your goals along the way. To truly stick to your health resolutions, celebrate your goals along the way and be comfortable creating new ones that will keep you reaching your reasonable expectations, even if those expectations change over time. 5) Make your goals more meaningful than the actual number. Your goal doesn’t have to be about just a number. Instead of saying you want to lose 10 pounds, just tell yourself you want to become healthier and slimmer so you feel fit and in good shape for weekend hikes with your family. 6) Do what you enjoy. Take a walk with someone you love spending time with. Plan a fun activity with friends and family. You can reach your health goals even when it doesn’t feel like you’re working toward your goal. http://9healthfair.org/9health

This coming year we hope to make it even better than in the past. As with every new event there is a lot of trial and error. So there will be a few changes from the Summer Festival last year, the biggest one being that we will be limiting the number of Food Trucks and slots per type of food vendor available. Food vendors will need to have entry forms completed and mailed back to the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce, no later than April 30th, 2015. Entry forms will be available on the Chamber website www. meadchamberofcommerce.com beginning January 15th. All other vendor forms must be mailed to the Chamber by May 15th, 2015. For more information about the 2015 Mead Summer Festival, being a vendor or volunteering, please contact Tiffany Holcomb at tiffany@meadchamberofcommerce.com .

Town of Mead: Legacy Donation Program The Mead Downtown Revitalization Committee would like your attention for a few minutes. For the past year, our committee has been working hard at getting funding and a plan to put our downtown back on the map and to be a success. But we need your help! The Legacy Donation Program has been established to help beautify the Downtown area and get our residents/businesses and surrounding areas involved. This program allows citizens or businesses to sponsor items in our town, like a bike rack, bench, planter, etc. Others may desire to leave an anonymous donation, which we will gladly accommodate and would deeply appreciate. This is not the only way we are revamping downtown. We have a comprehensive plan by phases on how we can revitalize Mead. This committee is striving to reach our vision: Mead is an active, vibrant gathering place for families to enjoy dining, shopping, social events, and to have fun during any season. We have attached the Legacy Donation Program document for your convenience. The Legacy program pricing sheet has specific pricing for all items available for sponsorship in this project. Check out the Downtown Revitalization page on the website (www.townofmead.org) to find out more information. We are striving to improve our atmosphere, appearance and function. You can be a part of Mead's downtown! Donate now! FOR MORE INFORMATION Contact the Town of Mead, 441 Third Street Mead, CO 80542, Phone: 970-535-4477
