Bits & Pieces Town of Mead
MEAD MAYOR, GARY SHIELDS As we wind up the spring season and the month of June and head into the summer months there is a noticeable decline in planned community activities for and around the Town of Mead in July. With that being said, I am hopeful that each and every one of you is able to spend more time with your friends and families and to get outdoors and enjoy our beautiful state. Some items of interest currently and into the month of July are as follows: The Town of Mead has launched the new website. This website is intended to improve communications between the Town and its’ residents. While the general consensus has been overwhelmingly in favor of the new site, there are still a few rough edges that need to be polished. Please take the time to visit the site at www.townofmead.org and browse around. We welcome your constructive feedback. June 24th is the start of the 2nd session for the Mead Summer Recreation Program. The 2nd session runs through July 10th. Additionally, the 3rd session will begin on July 15th and run through July 31st. This program offers an excellent opportunity for the kids to get out of the house and use up some of their endless energy. It also affords moms (and dads) a chance to run to the grocery store, pick up
the house, or just sit down and read a book. Speaking of books, the High Plains Library Book Mobile will be visiting our town on July 7th and July 21st from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Mead Town Park. Participating in the High Plains Library Summer Reading Program is a great way to keep your students’ mind sharp and ready for the upcoming school year. I have heard teacher’s estimate that those who do not read during summer break can lose 3-6 months of reading level skills. Check out a book! For those more competitive folks, the Doubles Grass Volleyball Tournament takes place on July 19, followed by the Mead Mad Scramble Basketball Tournament on July 26. Both events are guaranteed to not only get your heart rate up and make you sweat, but you’ll have a great time while doing so. More information on registration for any of these Town sponsored events can be obtained by visiting the website, or contacting Janet Torres at 970-535-4477. In closing, I would like to wish each and every one of you a safe and Happy Independence Day!

Did you know 90% of emergency room visits involving fireworks are caused from consumer firework accidents? Mountain View Fire Rescue wants you to enjoy your Independence Day celebration and we encourage you to keep these tips in mind. The best way to protect your family is to not use fireworks at home. Attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting of fireworks to the professionals. Kids should never play with fireworks! Know that sparklers burn at more than 1200° Fahrenheit, so make sure they are kept outside and away from everyone’s face, clothing and hair.
Always have a bucket of water and garden hose nearby. Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before discarding them. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they will become stressed, run loose or get injured.
From all of us at Mountain View Fire Rescue, we wish you a Happy Independence Day!

Calling All Pet Owners
303.833.0310
By Robin Barrett Do you have precious little ones, four legged ones that is, that you would love to leave in the hands of a professional from time to time. Well let us introduce to you to Happy Tails Pet Sitting and Services, LLC. . Happy Tails is a pet sitting and services business that is owned and operated by Carole Davis. Carole is a native Coloradoan, a veteran of the US Air Force, and a twenty year resident of Mead. Because of her love for animals, in 2000, Carole attended Pima Medical Institute for Veterinary Assistant. Carole is a proud member of Pet Sitters International, and Pet Sitters Associates, LLC and is an A+ member of the Better Business Bureau of Northern Colorado and Wyoming. After graduating from PIMA with honors, Carole went to work as a Veterinary Assistant and Kennel Manager for a veterinary hospital in Longmont for 3years. While there, Carole had an opportunity to pet sit. She found she loved being able to interact with the pets in their own environment. So in November of 2003, Carole opened Happy Tails Pet and Services, LLC. Carole has found out over the years that there are many pets that do not respond well in a kennel environment. So that's where she comes in. She has devoted all of her time to her business. She says, "If you do what you love and enjoy it, you will never work another day in your life." Carole has found that to be true for herself. She has been able to care for many different types of animals such as dogs, cats, horses, goats, chickens, ducks, pig, a bottle fed calf, ferreters, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, rodents, small reptiles, and a 80 pound African Spurred Tortoise, hermit crabs, sugar-gliders, fresh and salt-water aquariums and outdoor ponds. As you can see she is not afraid to take on any animal. Pet sitting is about trust. Pet owners are no different than mothers or fathers. They love their pets as much as a parent would love their child or children. It is very rewarding for Carole to have pet owners trust her with their pets and homes. She definitely creates a bond with the pet and the pet's owner so that the pet owners can be away from their pet(s) with ease and not worry about their beloved pet’s care. In addition Carole can provide the following additional services: Indoor/Outdoor Plant Watering, Mail and Newspaper Collection Poop Scooping, Trash & Recycling Set Out and Retrieval Medication Administration, Basic Sidewalk Clearing if it Snows Walking and Play Time and Mid-Day Potty Breaks By providing these additional services, Carole's clients are able to be worry free regarding their pets and homes. She provides reliable quality pet care in and around Mead-Longmont-Hygiene, Berthoud. Carole’s Office hours are 8am to 8pm. Happy Tails hours are from 6am through9amand6pmthrough9pm.Contactthemat 720-352-0910 or 970-535-0910.

Stuart Edward Holt 1959 ~ June 2, 2014
Stuart Edward Holt passed away unexpectedly at his home in Mead, CO on June 2, 2014. Stuart was a retired U.S. Army Major, and Sheriff’s deputy with Boulder County. Stuart joined the United States Army in 1982 after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Business Administration degree. In May 1995 Stuart began his career as a jail deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. He attended POST certification training and became a patrol deputy in January 1998. For many years Deputy Holt worked in the mountain communities of Boulder County. During his law enforcement career Stuart received numerous compliments from citizens, staff and other law enforcement agencies. He was a man of few words preferring to let his actions communicate his character. Stuart was always quick to help, and to do what was right. In 1997, 2010, and 2013 Stuart was honored with the Life Saving Medal for intervening in a life-threatening situation. He also received a Sheriff’s Commendation in 2007 as well as a Letter of Commendation from the CU Police Department for his quick action in an armed assault that occurred on the CU Boulder Campus. Deputy Holt’s timely intervention and engagement prevented other attacks and more tragic events. In 2011, he also received the Meritorious Service Award. He was a deputy that carried out his duty to the best of his ability in a compassionate and respectful manner. Overall, Stuart dedicated 18 years to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Stuart enjoyed the Colorado lifestyle, golfing, skiing and racquetball. He was a member of Faith Community Lutheran Church. He was a loving father and husband, a true friend, and a dedicated public servant who will be dearly missed. Survivors include his mother Patricia Holt of Sonora CA, his wife Shirley Holt of Mead, CO and his daughter Samantha Holt of Los Angeles CA. He is further survived by his brother Steven (Julie) Holt of Sonora CA and his sister Holly (Paul) Charpentier of Kingsburg CA. His father preceded him in death in 2013. Cremation was entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. A celebration of Stuart’s life was held June 10. Summer Festival 2015
The 2nd Annual Mead Summer Festival was a huge success, thanks to our committee members, volunteers and sponsors. We have now started a new tradition for the Town of Mead and community. Even with the unexpected rain and chilly weather for the Summer Festival, there was still a fairly good turnout. With this being the largest scale event that the current M.A.C.C. Board and staff has coordinated, there was some trial and error involved, and we are pleased with the results and the experience. We now have a better idea of what to do for next year. In an effort to increase attendance for next year and provide an even better event for the community, the M.A.C.C. is in search of committee members for the 2015 Summer Festival. Summer Festival Committee meetings will be held monthly beginning in August 2014, to begin planning and organizing for next year. If you are interested in joining the 2015 Summer Festival Committee, please contact Tiffany Holcomb via email at tiffany@meadchamberofcommerce.com.
