Ritchie Brothers - Mead What goes on there really?

By Jan Sciacca Many of us remember the vast open fields on the eastern side of I-25, south of Highway 66, before Ritchie Brothers “came to town.” I suppose many folks in the area are educated as to what goes on there but I suspect I’m not alone when I admit that I know RB is a big auction company that nearly every town in northern Colorado wanted to call their own. I know it was a major coup for Mead when Ritchie Brothers settled there. Every time there’s an upcoming auction, I see a gradual and then a rapid build-up of machinery, cars, trucks, buses, fire trucks and all types of equipment that I don’t have a clue what the name of it is or what it’s used for. Of course, I could go check it out instead of “going with the flow” of traffic on I-25. After a couple of glances to the east, I’ve traveled past the site, only to wonder the same thing, the next time I pass.

Last month, I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Bryan Stonecipher, Regional Operations Manager for Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers at the main building in Mead at 4444 Ritchie Dr. Mead’s Summer Festival is June 14 and Bryan was interested in hearing how Ritchie Brothers might assist Mead in making the 4-8 p.m. event in Mead Town Park a huge success.

Since it faces I-25 by Hwy 66, it’s easy in, easy out. There’s no time wasted and no unnecessary trips that need to be made to the Denver metropolitan complex. MEAD MAYOR, GARY SHIELDS  It appears that we are finally starting to experience the warm weather that we have been anticipating all Spring. With all of the rain that we have had in the past few weeks, I would urge you all to take extra precautions while visiting our streams and rivers as many of them are currently just below flood levels. With just a couple of inches of rain on a given day, this could spell disaster, especially in the mountain canyons.  I would like to start by congratulating our most recent additions to the Town Board of Trustees.

Joyce Palaszewski and Terri Hatch were appointed to the board on May 12th after being selected from eleven applicants for the two open positions.  June will prove to be another busy month in and around the Town of Mead as there are several annual events and programs that I would like to bring to your attention.  The annual Summer Recreation Program begins on June 3rd, this is a great local program that allows your kids to participate three days a week and spend time with their friends from school and not be so "BORED" around the house. It is also a great way to get them out of the house and having fun at a great bargain price.  The Mead Fishing Derby will take place on June 7th during the state wide free fishing weekend. This event is held annually at the Mead Ponds which are just West of town on Welker Avenue (WCR 34). The event starts at 8 am and includes a free fishing clinic, lunch and door prizes.

 The 93rd Annual Highland Lake / Mead Community Gathering will be held on June 8th at the historic Highland Lake Church. The days festivities start at noon with the potluck luncheon, please bring a dish to feed up to 8 people. The scheduled program begins at 1 pm. This annual event is rich with Mead history and is a must for those who enjoy walks through time. Please contact Walt or Barbara Logsdon @ 970-535-4262 for more information.  The Mead Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2nd Annual Mead Summer Festival on June 14th from 4-8 pm in the Town Hall Park and along Main Street. This event has proven to be worthy of continuing from last year and allows Mead businesses to be introduced to the community. I urge you all to attend as there will be live entertainment and plenty to do for all ages. There are different sessions beginning the first week of June. Bryan showed me the Ritchie Brothers venue and the auditorium were the bidders sit. There were hundreds of orange stadium seats that looked out large westerly windows.

The onsite items that are auctioned are paraded here and then bid for. People come and go throughout the day of an auction. Bidders from all over the world arrive, as well as local businesses and individuals, who are interested in auction items.

We met in the V.I.P. lounge overlooking the stadium. In addition to a long conference table, there were plush chairs lined up with excellent views of the auction items, as well as a large screen where items could be viewed and bid on from other sites as well. The room seemed large to me for such a lounge. When I asked what it took to be a V.I.P. and to be welcome in the lounge, Bryan responded that V.I.P.s spend two million dollars a year or more at Ritchie Brothers.

Then he commented that on auction days, it’s common to see wall-to-wall buyers in the room.

I asked about the build-up of inventory before an auction. I was in the main building where it seemed very quiet with few employees. Who moves the inventory there? Doesn’t that take an army? Bryan pointed to an adjacent building where 12-14 employees work on auction inventory details. He said the company also hires local residents to help with the preparation of auctions and for the wrap-up afterwards. Temporary or seasonal clerical employees are also used at Ritchie Brothers. Other openings exist from time to time for clerical workers to travel with Bryan and other team members to other states for RB Auctions. For the right person, this can be an amazing job where RB pays for transportation, lodging and food while the employee is assisting with the auction data.

Bryan has been the Regional Operation Manager at RB for eight months after being the Colorado Operations Manager for Insurance Auto Auctions for nearly nine years. It was there that Ritchie Brothers sought him. Brian commutes from his home in Parker daily. His wife and kids are well entrenched in the Parker community so he has adjusted to the daily drives to Mead. He travels frequently so in those situations, he heads to DIA instead of Mead.

Ritchie Brothers is known for its impeccable reputation and honesty. The company’s core values states: “It’s all about our customers; We have fun; We do what is right; We are one team.”

Bryan talked about the long hours that he and other employees invest. He said RB is a like a big family. The company frequently celebrates with family events and is “pro family.”

Ritchie Brothers is also pro-community. When the national economy struggled after the company located in Mead, the firm had to rein in some of its charitable donations. Times are rebounding though and Bryan Stonecipher at the Mead location is letting no grass grow under his feet. He is there to make a difference for his customers, his fellow team and his community.

At the end of our meeting, Ritchie Brothers stepped forward with a very generous donation to sponsor the beer garden at the Mead Summer Festival.

He talked about how important it was to help those outside Denver receive their supplies as quickly as possible, without worrying about wasted time and inconvenience of driving to the city for the same products. Mead Summer Festival & Local Events

The 2nd Annual Mead Summer Festival will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Mead Town Park. The Summer Festival is an event organized by the Town of Mead and the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce to showcase the many businesses located in and around Mead.

Businesses desiring to take part in the Mead Summer Festival will be those that include: Current residents, or A Mead-licensed business, or A member of the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce, or A Mead area non-profit organization A Food Vendor or Food Truck (i.e. must be able to serve food to the local community)

There are multiple ways to participate in the Mead Summer Festival. You can choose to participate in all ways or just pick only those you might be interested in: 1. Host iSpy Mead – This is similar to Discover Mead from last year.

2. Be a vendor at the Mead Summer Festival on June 14th.

3. Donate prizes for iSpy Mead and other Mead Summer Festival events.

Local “Meadeorite” Carly Bolin “Pearl” was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at only 2 weeks old.

Cystic Fibrosis or CF is a fatal genetic disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems, causing premature death. Just 2 generations ago, most children with CF didn't live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, nearly half of people with CF are age 18 or older. Impressive progress has been made, but so much more needs to be done. Cystic Fibrosis affects tens of thousands of children and adults. Our Goal is to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis & to raise funds to help find a cure. Great Strides - a nationwide fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raises money to support vital research for a cure. It's the perfect way for friends, family and coworkers to come together and make a difference. Last year, the event raised over $60,000. This year, with your help, we hope to raise over $64,000 to support life-saving research endeavors.

We would like to invite everyone to take part in the Great Strides walk on Saturday June 7 @ Roger’s Grove Park in Longmont (just North of the Fairgrounds on Hover Road). We would love for all of you to come walk with our team “Pearl’s Pack”.

United Way Of Weld County Grants $20,000 To Weld County Recreation Programs

United Way of Weld County has awarded $20,000 to recreation centers and districts throughout Weld County to scholarship the participation of children and youth in summer activities. For over 20 years, United Way has funded and facilitated a competitive Youth Recreation

Scholarships grant awards process. After they receive an award, recreation centers and districts subsidize the participation of lower income youth in activities like baseball, swimming, dance, and archery. Many of the receiving children and youth are qualified through their participation in school free and reduced lunch programs.

Given the flooding last year, the scholarship support provided in 2013 was especially appreciated by a number of families.

need than ever. The ability to participate in our activities allowed kids to take their minds off of flood impact and to return to some normalcy.”

In 2013, 795 Weld County children and youth benefited through the scholarship program.

“While it is a small amount of funding— the $20,000 available for scholarships this year was less than half of the amount requested— the return on investment is huge,” said Margie Martinez-Perusek, a member of the award allocations committee. “We know the participation in activities is great for the kids bodies, and also that it makes them spirits happy. Reading the reporting from last year’s scholarships, time and again the recreation directors said their primary measurement of success is the smiles of children and youth.”
