Bees, Bees, Bees

By Robin Barrett The time of year that brings life to everything is approaching faster than we think. Spring is just around the corner. With it comes beautiful budding flowers, green grass, flowering trees, and yes, those pesky bees. Buzz buzz buzz. Although there is one bee that we all seem to love it’s working results. The bee that I am speaking of is the Honey Bee. Honeybee hives have long provided humans with honey and beeswax. Such commercial uses have spawned a large beekeeping industry, though many species still occur in the wild.

A honey bee colony is a female-dominated society, and the only male member of the society is called a drone. He’s only good for one thing – and you can probably guess what that is. Actually, though, the drone bee lives a pretty cushy life… But it ends badly! All honeybees are social and cooperative insects. A hive's inhabitants are generally divided into three types.

Workers are the only bees that most people ever see. These bees are females that are not sexually developed. Workers forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean, circulate air by beating their wings, and perform many other societal functions.

By April Fordyce Blewett & Kelly Fordyce Martindale Last month we focused on Rachel’s most recent project, Rio 2, where she is the voice of Carla. This month, we’ll finish focusing on Rachel, personally. Now 16, she is truly, a remarkable, caring, talented, young woman.

As you may know, Rachel Crow came in fifth on the X-Factor, a singing competition reality show. She may have been one of the youngest talents but she has been blessed with a huge heart for others.

But it goes both ways; people love her immediately also.

She has stolen hearts from those around her from the moment she was adopted at 6 months of age. Rachel says, “As long as I can remember, I’ve known I was adopted. I’m glad my parents told us from the beginning.” She went on to say that

The 2nd Annual Mead Summer Festival is quickly approaching. Last year the Summer Festival was a huge success; this year looks to be even better yet. The goal of this event is to showcase local businesses while connecting the essence and camaraderie of the “Boil & Boogie.”

This year Mead businesses or Mead Area Chamber of Commerce members are invited to reserve a booth to promote their products or services, however each business or vendor is also asked to provide a family friendly activity in an effort to attract the residents and families of the area. Also the M.A.C.C. will have an obstacle course for kids, the i-Spy Mead contest, prizes/giveaways, a live band, numerous food trucks/vendors and a beer garden.

Eye Candy Classic Car Show in Mead Memorial Weekend

Unless you plan to run the Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day, you should get yourself over to the town of Mead for the 11th annual Mead Motorheads Car Show, to be held from 10 am until 3 pm on that Monday. 110 metal works of art will be on display, and the price of admission is FREE! Everything from hot rods to rat rods will be there- pickups and originals, muscle cars and street rods. All will be 1980 or older and you’ll be amazed at the creativity and talent that has gone into their restoration. Food will be furnished by Rizza’s Bakery, Pizza Plus, Ranchero Restaurant, and Taterlicious.

This years’ major sponsors are Zach’s Transmission and 4X4 in Longmont, the Town of Mead, Colorado East Bank and Trust in Mead, B-Town Automotive in Berthoud, DeMers Automotive in Longmont, The Engine Shop in Longmont, Steve’s Automotive in Longmont, and 5220 Performance in Mead.

The Mead Summer Festival is a collaborative effort between the Town of Mead and the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rachel cont. from pg. M1 she thinks that helps avoid having identity struggles as adopted children mature. When Rachel was three, her family was blessed with the adoption of her younger sister, Hannah.

Growing up in the Mead area, Rachel attended Mead Elementary, Legacy Elementary in Firestone for two years, as well as Mead Middle School. She now attends a home school for child actors in California when she is not at home in Mead.

Living in the small town didn't keep this girl from having huge dreams. After years of singing in school events, everybody knew Rachel had talent. So at age twelve, Rachel’s parents encouraged her to go for it; and after loving a spring break trip to California, they loaded up and moved to California where she immediately started doing auditions in and around Hollywood. That was in 2010. She had some small roles until one afternoon Rachel and her parents were sitting in their very tiny rented apartment watching TV. They saw a commercial for season one of the X-Factor. Rachel's mom looked at her daughter and said, “Let's go audition.”

With no expectations and no other thoughts other than having fun, the family started that first audition day at 3am in pouring rain. They waited for about 4 hrs to get a ticket just to audition. She finally auditioned about 6:30 the next evening. Through a series of auditions and brief interviews, Rachel made her way through the assortment of colored tickets, progressing a bit further with each one. Getting through the multiple screening rounds, she finally was asked to sing for the executive producers. At her final audition the executives let her know that she was going through and ask her for a brief background story. They took her to a separate room where she sang in front of a camera and then they sent her home. She had to wait for the call that said she made it to the TV auditions. On Mother’s Day of that year she appeared on the official first show, sang for the judges, and her life was changed. That was three years ago this Mother’s Day. While Rachel and her family spent very little time in Disney Land because the cost is quite high, they would frequent the street vendors right outside the gates. One particular afternoon, the family was there on a hunt for their favorite snacks when Rachel was approached by her first fan! She had been on an X-Factor commercial during a football game and that was the beginning of people recognizing Rachel Crow. She says, “It has always been my dream to walk down the street and have people recognize me.” Now it happens all the time.

Rachel has a dream to influence the world. Though this dream started with a desire to be on TV and sing, her passion has grown much larger. She now wants to design and build a facility that will house children in the foster care system and encourage and support them while pursuing their dreams. She wants kids to know that even if they don't know what their dreams and passions are yet, there is hope and excitement for the future.

She also works directly with adoption organizations such as Kids Alliance and the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption (DTF). Rachel also was the PETA Face for Adoption because she also supports animal adoption.

In Dec. 2012, Rachel was on the Home for the Holidays show produced by the DTF. What was said of Rachel, was “most compelling was Rachel Crow who not only has a connection to foster care adoption, but at the young age of 14, has a soul-stirring voice! And all of this talent within an arm’s reach from the audience.”

In 2013, Rachel, at 15, was the spokesperson for National Adoption Day. Rachel urges those that are not in a position to adopt to help spread the word about adoption and foster care through social media. People can also help by collecting money or items for the Dave Thomas Foundation or other organizations like it. Her involvement with Kid Alliance gave her the opportunity to witness some actual adoptions on National Adoption Day. “It was an incredible experience to watch these kids get their new families,” says Rachel.

Rachel went to Las Vegas and performed for people from huge corporations at the Wendy’s Convention. Rachel performed a song called Promise to Promise which she wrote for her mom about how thankful she is for her adopting her. During the song, Rachel watched people writing out their gifts…they ended up raising $2.2 million, up from $600,000 the previous year. “It’s such a fulfilling feeling helping others,” she said.

“Everything I’ve done has been possible because of my family. They gave me the love and support to follow my dreams.” Placed in foster care as an infant, Rachel moved through three different foster homes in less than a year and faced an uncertain future until she was adopted by Kelly and Barbara Crow.

When asked if the family was surprised at her successes, her grandma said, “No. From the time she was 18-months-old, she had abilities beyond most children. I’m not surprised at all.” (Grandma is pictured below with Rachel, Hannah, and mom, Barbara.)

“Even as a toddler, Rachel had such spirit and drive to be the child she was meant to be, and before we knew it she became this little girl with the big voice,” says her mom, Barbara.

“The love I have for my girls is beyond anything,” says her dad, Kelly. Hannah is a straight-A student and Rachel has a recording contract with Columbia Records/Syco, a development deal with Nickelodeon and was on a recurring role on the comedy series, “Fred: The Show.” The girls continue to exceed their goals and dreams.

Rachel credits her talent to her faith, the support of her family and her fans. Rachel says in closing, “I’m happy when people approach me. They are hesitant but it’s okay to talk to me.” She says, “People act like I’m not a normal person. But I am.” She knows that without each and every one of her fans she would not be where she is today. And to make that point more obvious, Rachel just got her driver’s permit last month.

Carol Jean Schamper Meine October 15, 1930 ~ April 4, 2014

Carol Jean Schamper Meine, 83 years old, of Mt. Pleasant Iowa-Denver/ Grand Lake/ Mead Colorado, died on April 4, 2014 from heart complications.

Carol was born on October 15, 1930. She was raised by her aunt and uncle Hassenfritz on a farm, rode tractors, milked cows, baled hay. She was Dairy Queen 1948 and a registered nurse with a certificate from St. Joseph's in Denver.

She was married to the love of her life, Frederick John Meine, on May 28th, 1955.

Her interests included theater, crafts, painting, sewing and any new and wonderful project she could master. She was a very generous and creative soul.

She is survived by her spouse, Fred, and their children, William Frederick Meine (Melinda), Joanna Marie Huhman (Rich), James Edward Meine (Connie), Janet Lisa Meine, Diane Louise Meine, and Thomas Andrew Meine (Kathleen), 10 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Great things are happening at Mead Elementary. This year our school received $70,000 from Encana due to a grant written by Betsy Porter, Principal and Tara Jensen, parent. The money has been well spent on technology for the school. Each classroom now has 5 iPad minis and 108 chrome books (laptops) are being shared daily by students in each grade level. Mead Elementary also has implemented two movement breaks a day where students and staff do fun exercises to activate their brains to increase stamina for learning. Aims Community College’s Annual College For Kids set for June

This summer marks the 34th year that Aims Community College will offer third through seventh graders summer educational fun with a very special curriculum. College For Kids will be held for two consecutive weeks, June 2-5 and June 9-12.

Mead Street This year features classes like Video Game Design, Photography, Computer Hwy 66 Animation, Lego Mania, and Fun and Freaky Photoshop. Students choose two classes each week (one in the morning, one Drive-Thru! in the afternoon).

The queen's job is simple—laying the eggs that will spawn the hive's next generation of bees. There is usually only a single queen in a hive. If the queen dies, workers will create a new queen by feeding one of the worker females a special diet of a food called "royal jelly." This elixir enables the worker to develop into a fertile queen. Queens also regulate the hive's activities by producing chemicals that guide the behavior of the other bees. But the queen bee, in spite of her name, really isn’t what you might think.
