Devil Dogs BBQ of Mead Provides Mobile Service

By Jan Sciacca Our communities are privileged to be home to a new mobile restaurant called Devil Dogs BBQ, LLC, owned by Brian Anderson of Mead.

Devil Dogs is a mobile full service BBQ business that offers a wide variety of hardwood smoked meats, snacks – nachos (with homemade cheese sauce), wings, other homemade sides, and even homemade ice cream. Owner Brian Anderson says he strives to make everything he can from scratch. Brian says he can provide full service catering, or he jokes that he can just drop off BBQ for your event and you can tell everyone you made it. Devil Dogs will go anywhere accessible by roads. Since the company is a licensed mobile food vendor, it can operate any place in the state.

In addition to the catering side of the business, Devil Dogs now has its own BBQ sauces (made with Black

Mead Veterinary Medical Center To Serve I-25 Communities

By Jan Sciacca The state-of-the-art Mead Veterinary Medical Center is scheduled to open in October. What does a state-of-the-art veterinary medical center and luxury boarding facility really mean, you might ask? The answer quite simply is “absolutely everything” to the owner of a beloved dog, cat, or other 4-legged family member. What began as a life-long dream more than 2 ½ years ago is finally coming to fruition with a date to open in early October. The new facility is located at 13784 Pacific Drive, Mead and is visible to north bound I-25 traffic as being nestled below Mead’s Kum ‘n Go convenience store. The new building is housed on nearly 1.4 acres, has a cutting edge design and is environmentally “green” as it employs LED lighting and other energy saving equipment. Dr. Andrews’ goal is to create a modern yet comfortable and relaxing environment for both his valued clients and their best friends (pets).

The medical center will be fully digital and paperless and will allow clientele to access their pet’s records online at anytime. Medical services at MVMC will include (but are not limited to): all aspects of preventative medicine beginning with thorough annual exams, vaccinations, diagnostics and treatment for all medical illnesses/diseases, basic and advanced dentistry, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, hospitalization, and anything else that may be needed to keep one’s pet happy and healthy.

In addition to medical care, MVMC is devoting nearly 1/3 of the property to caring for the pet while the owner is away. The luxury boarding facility will include an outdoor “playground” for those pets fortunate enough to be boarded at MVMC. Dog runs will be significantly larger (and more comforting) than most facilities in Northern Colorado, allowing their client’s pets to not only have more room to exercise but also socialize. Inside the luxury boarding facility, each and every kennel will have floors designed with 24-hour sanitation in mind, full Plexiglas doors to avoid that “boarded feel,” and specially designed and comfortable cots for each MVMC pet including custom and specialized indestructible pads. According to Dr. Andrews, “our goal at MVMC is make each and every pet feel like their home away from home is MVMC.” Dr. Andrews graduated veterinary school from Colorado State University in 2005, completed his internship in Los Angeles and has since been practicing veterinary medicine in Colorado, which included a partnership at another veterinary hospital in the northern Colorado

Aesthetic Flooring Blesses Carbon Valley Help Center

By Jan Sciacca The Carbon Valley Help Center, which opened in February 2013 in the former Firestone town hall building, continues to grow in its mission to help people in immediate need move toward self-sufficiency. While blessing others they received a huge blessing from another area business. Aesthetic Flooring, located on Highway 66/I-25 in Mead, provided 639 sq. feet of installed carpeting valued at approximately $2000.

Last month Aesthetic Flooring heard that the Help Center was struggling with old carpeting that just wouldn’t clean up and had outlived its “life.” Although Aesthetic Flooring was in the midst of one of its busiest times of the year, they immediately assessed the situation, measured, then located a quality commercial grade carpet with a built-in pad and installed it.

Gloria Walsh, Treasurer of the Help Center, is thrilled. She shared that when she worked the Dacono Music Festival in August, the last thing she thought she’d receive was new carpeting. But while working the Festival, the carpeting that the organization desperately needed was casually discussed. Through a bit of networking the need was made known and fulfilled. This is another great example of the community coming together to support one another.

MEAD MAYOR, GARY SHIELDS  With the end of summer upon us and our children back in school, mornings and afternoons are sure to bring more traffic in and around our local roadways. Please remember to be aware of children walking to and from school, as well as the frequency of buses stopping in the area. While we all know to look both ways before we cross the street, we know that eager children do not always remember this.  With that being said, I would like to bring your attention to a couple local items of interest that have transpired within the last month.  I am very pleased to announce that the Town Board of Trustees has approved construction of a new section of our local trails system and also, we have allocated an unprecedented amount of funds for annual road maintenance and repair projects.  The trail section to be constructed is along 3rd Street (WCR 7) between Welker Avenue and Adams Avenue. If you have ever been driving this section of road and encountered anyone walking or riding bikes on 3rd Street, I am sure that you will agree that this new trail will provide a much safer

route for all to travel to and from town.  Last month you may have noticed all of the white paint that suddenly appeared on our local roads. This paint was put there by the maintenance department in order to identify sections in need of immediate repair. The repairs and maintenance of these sections will include patching, chip seal and new striping where each have been determined to be needed. This work is scheduled to begin in the later weeks of September so be on the lookout for road crews and be sure to give them a brake.  Lastly, as you all know, September is a very busy month for our town and I look forward to seeing you all at Mead Community Days on September 13th and the Mead Rotary’s Sugarbeet Festival on September 27th. Information on these two events can be found throughout this edition of the Mead Messenger. If you have not yet experienced these events, I urge you to bring your family out and experience the traditions and heritage of Mead.

Mead & Carbon Valley Recognized for Safety

Eleven Weld County municipalities were recently recognized for safety, comprising 36 percent of the Safewise list of the 30 Safest Cities in Colorado.

Eaton (#2), Dacono (#3), Severance (#5), Erie (#9), Fort Lupton (#12), Johnstown (#13), Firestone (#15), Mead (#17), Windsor (#20) and Frederick (#23) were all recognized for being in the top 30 safest cities in Colorado. Berthoud, which is in both Weld and Larimer Counties, also made the list at #22.

“We are extremely proud of the county’s law enforcement agencies and municipalities for all the work they do in promoting and preserving public safety,” said Commissioner Chair Douglas Rademacher. “Congratulations to all of them. What an honor for Weld County to be so well represented in this survey!”

Volleyball!

Mead High School will have a new volleyball coach this fall. To help the program, I am creating a list of interested middle school girls to compete in the Gold Crown Fall League. If your daughter is looking for a more competitive volleyball experience than recreation leagues, please contact me. Although we will be working with the Mead High School program, it is not a requirement for the player to plan on attending Mead High School.

We will also be looking for coaches for the middle school volleyball teams. If you have experience playing and/or coaching competitive volleyball, please contact me.

consumption, he said to call him and he would arrange to provide me with both. He’s currently in the middle of working with the state on completing its requirements for distribution through retail outlets. This is an indicator of the whirlwind activity that the company has experienced since its first day of operation at Mead’s Summer Festival in June, followed by a grand opening at Black Canyon’s distillery.

Brian says he loves good food and BBQ has been a passion of his for 20+ years.

When he was growing up, he remembers his dad taking store bought BBQ sauces and tweaking them to his taste. That’s the history of how Brian got his start in BBQ. Currently the company is 100% family operated by Brian, his wife Misty, and the Anderson kids Tyler, Kylie and Shawn.

Although the company is new, it’s had memorable moments. Brian explains it like this, “During the first few minutes of operation at the Mead Summer Festival – here we are getting ready for our first service, and in walks the Weld county health department inspector. Talk about nerve racking! But she was very nice, very helpful and we passed with flying colors… wheeehhh.”

Brian gets asked frequently, “Where are the hot dogs?” It seems that many people who may not have served in the military are unfamiliar with the term “Devil Dogs”. It is a nickname that was given to the US Marine Corps by the Germans in WWI at the battle of Belleau Woods, where the Germans said the Marines fought like Teufel Hunden – dogs from hell. Or at least, that’s how the legend goes; and it has come to be used

by Marines as a term of respect for fellow Marines by referring to them as “Devil Dog” or just “Devil”.

Carbon Valley Help Center Empty Bowls Project

Save the Date – November 22, 2014 Carbon Valley Help Center is excited to Annual Empty Bowls Project.” We are located in Firestone, CO and was established in 2012 with the following mission: "To help people in immediate need move toward self-sufficiency by unifying Carbon Valley resources."

At the event for a modest donation, attendees select a unique hand painted bowl made by a local artist or community member, and select a meal of soup, bread and dessert donated by area restaurants and caterers. They get to enjoy the meal with family and friends. The bowl is theirs to keep as a reminder of those who face hunger every day. A silent auction featuring the works of local artist will also be featured.

This event will help to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness in the Carbon Valley area. All proceeds will be used to provide food and resources to the clients of the Carbon Valley Help Center.

This event will be held at Frederick High School 5690 Tipple Parkway, Frederick, Colorado on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the M.A.C.C. Chili Cook Off will be donated to Isaac’s (Crane) Fund On Tuesday, June 10, Isaac suffered an unresponsive episode. His daddy, was able to revived him. Jenna and Jeremiah (his parents) took Isaac to Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with Aspiration Pneumonia. He was then admitted to the PICU. Testing began to find the cause of Isaac’s low muscle tone, present since birth.

Less than a week later, Jenna and Jeremiah were given the devastating news that Isaac has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1. His muscles will continue to atrophy until he passes away. His parents have been told that Isaac has months to possibly a year. Doctors say he is on the weaker end of Type 1, which is the most severe.
