Anderson Farms . . . A Family Tradition

By Jan Sciacca The Anderson Farms story begins in 1911 when Swedish emigrants August and Josephine Anderson purchased a farm south of Mead. They lived there with their four children Albert, Mildred, Edwin and Laurine. August and Josephine died when the children were young so Albert and Edwin took over the farm. Over the years they grew corn, sugar beets, barley, alfalfa and wheat. In the 1930s, they began raising cattle. Edwin married Louise Johnson, a Longmont farming native, in 1946. Her father, Emil Johnson, was also a Swedish emigrant. Emil and his wife Esther spent many years farming near Highway 287 and Lookout Road south of Longmont. In 1958, as Interstate 25 was being built, the government purchased some of the Anderson property for the highway project. The money Edwin and Albert received from this

purchase was used to buy the current Anderson Farms property near Erie. Until 1996, the South Farm, as it is known, was a tenant farm. Other families, including the Walkers and

Firestone Liquor’s owner, Sylvia Aberly, is excited to celebrate ten years with the Carbon Valley. “Please join us on Saturday, October 18, for some giveaways and some vendor tastings as well as hot dogs and chips in the afternoon,” invites Sylvia. “I want to thank the town for all of their great support all of these years,” says Sylvia. She and her husband, Scott, owner of HICC, a carpet care company, have appreciated the support of all their customers. Sylvia’s excitement was contagious as she shared the specials she has planned for that day of fun and hopes CVCR readers will join in the festivities.

Rasmussens lived and worked on the farm. Edwin and Louise had three children Barbara, Jody and Jim. Barbara and her husband Randy live in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jody lives on the farm near Mead. Jim and his wife Brenda live near the South Farm. They have two daughters, Rachelle, who is actively involved with the farm and Megan, who lives and works as a physical therapist in Longmont. In 1997, Jim decided to start a small pumpkin patch at the South Farm. In the first few years, Anderson Farms only offered hayrides to the pumpkin patch, and a few farm animals. In 1999, Colorado’s first corn maze was added. In 2000 the Anderson Family was bestowed the honor of Successful Farming Magazine’s “Farm Family of the Year”. “Terror in the Corn” made its debut in 2001. It’s reported to be Colorado’s only Haunted Hayride & Ghost Town experience. The 35 minute four part haunt begins as a tractor drawn wagon heads deep into the night, through the cornfield. One will find him or herself visiting a deserted ghost town and ghoulish creatures of the night along the journey.

On October 18, starting at 2pm until 6pm, Coors and Budweiser reps will be at the store sharing some of their products. Plus, there is a sale on beer the whole week leading up to the celebration. Sylvia says, “I would like to encourage people who are new to the area to stop in and say hi and experience our friendly atmosphere.” On that Saturday, until 10pm, Sylvia is also giving everybody 5% off all regularly priced beer and alcohol. Besides beer and spirits, Sylvia stocks micro-brews, drink mixes and juices, cigarettes, and sells lottery tickets, plus a lot more. Sylvia says they have a great crew and will continue serving the needs of the Carbon Valley with the coldest beer in town. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

What’s On My Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Deadline for Every Issue of the CVCR is the 15th of Each Month... Late??? Try Anyway!

A Full Life with a Peaceful Heart Days, months, years…they come and go. Each one filled to the max with what we can handle; some days are challenging to simply answer the phone while others contain productivity that makes us think we are super human. I think on my years prior to 1990, the year my oldest daughter died. I was the queen of multi-tasking. I had to be; I was a single mom with four children, going to college and running my house cleaning business. Life was full to the brim and I was calm and happy; filled with joy. The years between 1990 and 2002, the year my oldest son died, simply put, were a blur. Truthfully, I hardly remember anything without photos to remind me. But I know I accomplished projects as my kids passed from one grade to another, I started this paper in 1999 and I still have friends I met in 1995. How do I wake up every day, knowing two of my children have died? How did I start a business and manage to keep it going, even thriving? Where did the energy come from that sustained me while watching two grandchildren full time? Where do the words come from when I need them to encourage my children and friends through rough times, or my husband with work related or retirement issues, or harder yet, friends who have lost their child? Now, I’ve survived 24 years without Alisha and 12 years without Jason. My other two kids have graduated from both high school and extended education. I have two grandkids with another on the way. Both kids have just moved. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report is in its 15th year and marriage is good and, and, and…. Whew! Life. Always changing. Now 2014 is nearing a close. Another season has arrived and in a blink of an eye it will be gone and then we’ll be wishing everyone a Happy New Year. This year moved from one event to another, one project to another, from one trip to another, and one appointment to another. I’ve had just a few days of down time. I miss the “space” in my life. 2014 has been so busy I’m not sure I’ve experienced the joy that was meant to happen. Yet, how has so much occurred and I’m still functioning? How has the business managed to prosper while publishing a new magazine? Where did I find a little extra time to help my kids in their moving process? How is my marriage better than it has ever been?

I have strived to focus on each individual day. While not perfect, I’ve used a lot of energy ignoring “tomorrow” and refusing to worry about “what might happen.” I made the choice to trust God with my life on a day-by-day basis. The Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow because today is full enough with things to think on and do. It also promises that the Lord will help us through each one of those days. And that is the answer to my big question, “How have I made it through this year, all the years, without going crazy?” Daily living with Jesus as my best friend and knowing He walks right beside me and many times, carries me. The joy of the Lord is my strength. It’s not some mystical magical experience but one of friendship and trust and deep, all-encompassing love. I KNOW that the Lords love me, regardless of all the bad things I’ve done in my life. And that just makes me love Him more. For about five years after each child died, I was an empty shell that walked and talked but didn’t’ want too. I did what had to be done but always would rather stay in bed or just sit and stare at nothing. I had nothing to give and could not receive. Those were hard years. Now, however, while I still would rather stay in bed or just sit, I am not an empty shell. I revel in the peace and comfort of my surroundings and I find great calm in knowing that all is well with my soul. I appreciate the hours that have nothing demanding in them and my heart is filled with love and peace and joy. Many people in my life do not understand how I can have that peace after all that has happened to me in my lifetime. Yes, I should be an alcoholic or drug addict or divorced again…or dead. But that is not what God wants for me. I am so thankful for that. God has placed so many wonderful, honest, real people in my life and they have supported me through the years. I think of each of you and praise God for you. Some were for a season and are no longer in my life. And yet, another, has returned and made my life fuller yet! I’ve never been alone, because of the Lord and because of each person. Living, daily, does not mean I don’t plan for the future. I do. But I hold those plans loosely as they can change in the beat of a heart. I understand completely there is less than a second between life and death. And I choose to live that second, each second, with the Lord by my side. I wouldn’t be here today if I had chosen any other way.

Bret’s Electric and Pat Murrah Honored by U. S. Dept. of Defense By Jan Sciacca

I knew I had found the right location on Wed., September 10 when I walked into Bret’s Electric, 9250 Bruin Blvd., in Frederick and saw an office where normal green office plants were adorned with small American flags, table decorations consisted of collections of red, blue and silver beads and an adjoining room had been transformed with a celebratory food spread. The team at Bret’s Electric had done an amazing job preparing for the celebration, while keeping it a secret from employee and soon-to-be award recipient Pat Murrah (above right). Looking at other community awards and sponsorships on the office walls, one should not be surprised to think that Bret’s Electric is supportive of the military and two huge honors were about to be presented from the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve), which is a division of the U. S. Department of Defense. It all started months ago when Navy Reservist Miles Naill, who is in Bret’s Electric apprentice program, nominated employee Pat Murrah for the “Patriot Award” and Bret’s Electric for the “Employer Support for Guard and Reserve” award. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support citizen Warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence, if needed. Plus it is given to individual supervisors or bosses for support provided directly to the nominating Service member and his or her family. The Patriot Award is individual based while the employer receives an award called “Employers Support of the Guard and Reserve.” It was almost time for the ceremony. Pat’s wife, Kimberly Murrah, showed up not knowing why she had been summoned to Bret’s. She was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers, compliments of Bret’s Electric. Then Pat walked in thinking he had arrived for a staff meeting only to find a festive environment with the staff and company owners Brett and Janet Martin and Terry Rothe, each in smiles, Reservist Miles Naill in fatigues, and Becky Small, the Employment Transition Coordinator at the ESGR, ready to present the awards and to tell everyone why the awards are so special. While everyone in the office had some time to recognize the importance of the honor that was being bestowed, I imagine that it took some time for Pat and Kimberly Murrah

Carbon Valley Heating and Air is looking for the oldest furnace in the area and will give its owner a new furnace free as part of an effort to show homeowners how much energy savings is possible from a heating system upgrade. “We felt this contest was a good way to draw attention to the potentially large amount of savings by upgrading an old furnace to new,” said Josh Robertson from Carbon Valley Heating and Air. “There are some very old heating systems in this area and a lot of energy and money is wasted. Plus, a higher efficient furnaces decrease pollution substantially – about 20 times less pollutants.” According to Robertson, any furnace more than 10 years old is a ripe candidate for replacement, especially if the efficiency was 80% efficient or less when new. He also pointed out the average life expectancy of a gas furnace is 12 years depending brand on maintenance performed. As mechanical equipment ages, its performance degrades and becomes less efficient. All homeowners are encouraged to enter because there will be great prizes for runner ups! CV-HVAC is planning on giving away two free carbon monoxide detectors. Homeowners can complete Carbon Valley Heating and Air’s online entry form found on their website at www. carbonvalleyheatingandair.com or drop by the booth at the miners day festival and fill out an entry in person. Entries will be verified for age and function and the winner will be selected by November 17, 2014. Re-Elect Peggy Randolph for Dacono City Council

Sometimes, in rural communities, it appears that some in office are lacking the education and experience of those in larger metropolitan areas. Not so with Dacono, and not so with Peggy Randolph. Peggy Randolph has been a campaign leader for several former Colorado Congressmen and Senators and involved with many Civic Organizations. She’s worked as a Supply Judge for Colorado Elections for over 30 years in Longmont and Weld County, also on the Boulder County Canvas Board. Peggy is running for re-election for the Dacono City Council where she has already served for three years. She has lived in Dacono since Feb. 2006, after having moved from Longmont where she lived since 1964. While in Longmont, she was President of Women’s Roundtable for 2 years, in addition to being Vice President and Parliamentarian for several years. She was a former President of both Sunset and Twin Peaks Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association as well. Peggy says, “Moving to Dacono in 2006 and having the advantage of tenure in the state, I feel this gives me a unique ability to bring sound traditional and steadfast decisions that will help Dacono continue to move forward with positive direction and that is why I am asking for your vote.” Peggy Randolph recently received three questions that she was asked to answer. Following are those questions and her answers. Voters will find Peggy Randolph grounded, focused and

Thurs 10a-7p concerned for those she serves. 1. What is the biggest issue that the city of Dacono is currently facing Discounts for Seniors & and how will you handle that issue? Emergency Personnel I feel that the main issue facing Dacono is that we need to finish the jobs that were started during the boom. There were a lot of developers knocking on the cities doors and promising these grand projects and when the economy went south all those promises dried up. So I would like to serve another term to ensure that Dacono has the chance to grow in a smart economic way. Dacono has the infrastructure already in place and has development taking place and with responsible builders we can enjoy the benefits of growth. 2. How will you attract housing and business development to Dacono? Dacono is in an area that is positioned for growth. One of the most important things for Dacono to pay attention to is having the right balance of development. We need good commercial commerce along the I-25 corridor and a smart feasible blend of small business and residential in the heart of our city. 3. Do you support Dacono having its own schools under the St. Vrain Valley School District? If not, why? If so, how will you support that? There will be a public school in Dacono and I am in complete support of having one in our city. I really don’t think the citizens of Dacono are concerned with what school district is responsible for building one, just as long as there is a school in our wonderful city so that the children can get a good education. On a personal note, Peggy is the mother of five children; four sons and one daughter. One of her sons is deceased. While in Longmont, Peggy was known as Peggy Losacco but she was widowed in 1986. In 2000, Peggy married Carl Randolph. Carl is also active in the Carbon Valley and is the President of Tri Town Community Seniors. If you have any questions for Peggy she invites you to ask her via one of these two emails. Peggy Randolph asks for your support and vote as well. If you have any questions regarding her perspective on any Dacono issues you can contact her at ranpeg52@aol.com. Peggy reminds you all to watch for mail-in ballots on October 1. This is a mail-in election only.

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings DACONO MAYOR, CHARLES SIGMAN

z Welcome to Fall. It’s hard to believe the summer season has already ended. It was a busy construction season for Dacono.

Public Works is nearing completion of Phase I of a 2-year $2,350,000 capital improvement water line replacement project on Glen Dale Circle. Additionally, the parking lot at City Hall is about finalized. z Did you know that annually, the City of Dacono provides community grants/donations to education groups and not-for-profit organizations? The application cycle for 2015 is now open. To see if your community group or school qualifies, go to www.cityofdacono. com. z The City’s public recycling dumpsters are now located on Forest Avenue, near Clem Dufour Park. As a reminder, the recycling dumpsters are for recycling only, not disposal of household trash or bulk waste items.

z The City of Dacono is pleased to participate in the 2014 Colorado Cities & Towns Week October 20-26. This week is part of an ongoing effort to raise public awareness about the services that cities and towns perform and local government’s role in enhancing their quality of life. planned for October. The Firestone Art & Music Show Reception is set for Oct. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carbon Valley Regional Library. Not only will it include local talented artists, but live art demonstrations, musicians, refreshments and free children’s activities courtesy The Home Depot. Then on Oct. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m., Art & Wine night at The Brew at Deja lu will feature additional local artists and a chance to enjoy an evening out among friends. z Come out and visit with our local heroes as the FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District, in conjunction with the Firestone Police Department, wraps up Fire Protection Month on Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Firestone Home Depot for a Community Safety Day. The focus will be on home heating, holiday information, child safety and stranger danger information. z Halloween is also right around the corner and I know there are many children ready and anxious for this year’s Halloween Safe Night hosted by our police department. This year’s event is on Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coal Ridge Middle School. Come out and meet your police department personnel, Town Board members and many of your neighbors and friends in this fun community event. The event will include all kinds of fun games, prizes and a costume contest. z FIRESTONE RANKED #6 IN THE NATION FOR SAFEST

SMALL TOWN—Our police department is amazing in their community outreach, but also at keeping our community safe. A measure of this accomplishment is reflected in the latest Top 10 list from Movoto, which rated our Firestone community as the 6th safest small town in THE NATION! The article noted, “If you want some natural beauty and seriously nice views with your safety, this town is the one you’ve been looking for.” Thank you to our Firestone Police personnel and the Firestone community for all your efforts in keeping our community a safe place to live. z ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS—Last year’s sales tax issues 2C and 2D have made it possible to accelerate many of our road maintenance and improvement projects. As you enjoy driving around Town on many of these improvements the Town Board and staff are hard at work looking ahead to our 2015 budget for next year’s capital improvement projects. The board and staff are reviewing our road condition survey and forming a sustainable comprehensive plan to maintain our infrastructure throughout our entire community for future generations. z Have a safe and fun fall season. I hope to see you at Halloween Safe Night. Please contact me with any recommendations, issues or concerns by emailing psorensen@firestoneco.gov.

at Miners Day. This generous gift gives the whole community an opportunity to get together and enjoy a fantastic fireworks show each fall, and we could not provide them without his support. Thanks, Kent! You are truly an upstanding business owner and we are lucky to have you as part of our community. z We have come to the end of the Community BBQ Tour, another event that we couldn’t have made possible without Stapp Interstate Toyota’s generous donation. This event was a great way for the community to come out and get to know one another as well as the Board of Trustees they have chosen to represent their interests and the staff that executes each and every day to make their priorities a reality. The Stapp family, who owns and runs the dealership as a family business, has chosen to take their marketing dollars back from the rest of the metro Toyota dealers in a conscious effort to make a difference in their community. You can see this commitment in the many programs they are supporting with the schools in the area including the new Homecoming festivities the FHS Booster Club is

putting together this year. Thank you Stapp family, for stepping up to support our community in so many ways. z We have a couple of opportunities for you to give back to your community as well. The Frederick Youth Commission is once again asking for your donations for their Thanksgiving Dinner in a Box program, where they deliver all the Thanksgiving Dinner fixings to families in need throughout the Carbon Valley. If you would like to nominate a family or donate to the Youth Commission, email them at youthcommission@frederickco.gov. The Frederick Police Department is partnering with the other agencies in the area for the well-loved Santa Cops program once again this year. You can help by giving an unwrapped gift, donating monetarily, sponsoring a family or wrapping gifts. Call the Frederick Police Department for more information at 720.382.5700.

FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

z The changing of seasons brings a new palate of reds, yellows and all the colors in between to our community. This time of year offers a great opportunity to get out and Paul Sorensen enjoy our wonderful parks and trails during cooler temperatures. October is also a time for homecoming celebrations, corn mazes and leaf blankets on our yards. Many front yards are turning into fun and creative displays such as ghostly graveyards or festive harvest celebrations. Take a walk around your neighborhood and enjoy the creative displays. z OCTOBER HAPPENINGS IN FIRESTONE z Our Firestone Cultural Committee has some special events

FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY

z As we enter the season of giving, I want to thank some of the businesses that have Tony Carey given so much to benefit the community we all call home. of Indoor Air Pollution

As a homeowner, you should know there are a number of pollutants that negatively impact your indoor air quality and aggravate many health conditions. Prolonged exposure to some home invaders may even lead to cancer. The most common symptoms of poor indoor air are: • Dry eyes, headaches, & nasal congestion • Fatigue • Nausea • Asthma and respiratory complications Health-Threatening Indoor Air Pollutants Dean, Owner of Flatland Heating And

Air in Erie reminds customers of the many different types of pollutants found in the home, including: • Deadly and carcinogenic gases such as carbon monoxide, radon, and formaldehyde • Secondhand tobacco smoke • Bacteria and viruses • Pollen, animal dander, and dust mite particles “The health impact of these different pollutants varies greatly, from mild discomfort to life-threatening,” said Dean. “Fortunately, there are many ways to improve the air in your family’s home.” Some habits in the home that can reduce a family’s exposure to poor indoor quality are keeping doors and windows shut, improving ventilation, and keeping the house clean. The best way to remove particles and pollutants from the air is with a whole-home

air purifier that removes these particulates from every room of the house, such as the Aprilaire Model 5000. Especially for those with allergy and asthma symptoms, an air purifier can provide significant relief. Removing Dangerous Gases and Volatile Organic Compounds While an air purifier can trap the particulates that impact a family’s health, removing invisible but deadly gases requires whole-home ventilation. “The concentration of polluted air in the home can be up to 10 times greater than the levels outside, so bringing in fresh air is essential to a family’s health,” said Dean. “Aprilaire offers two solutions for homeowners to exchange the stale and polluted air in their homes: an ERV (energy recovery ventilator) and a ventilation control system.” ERVs also improve energy efficiency by ensuring air brought into the house is not too

4 Ways to Bring Out Your Home’s Personality

Frontière Natural Meats Provides Healthy Meat Choices

By Jan Sciacca Frontière Natural Meats of Longmont opened earlier this summer and is a remarkable local place where one can find an amazing array of healthy meat: All Natural Bison, Angus, Elk, Pork, Lamb and Organic Beef & Chicken. After spending several years selling to other businesses, Robert LaPoint and his son-in-law James Viola opened a retail store in Longmont to sell direct to the customer who wants healthy meat choices for themselves and their families. They started the business because they both had experience in the industry and were out of work at the time. Frontière Natural Meats is worldwide with the retail outlets reaching local communities along the Front Range. Until Robert opened the franchise in Longmont, the company dealt mostly with distributors. It was Robert’s foresight that wanted to bring the healthy meats directly to families and local businesses. The meats are free of hormones, antibiotics and raised on pesticide-free grasslands. Robert has long-time area residents in place to serve the community. Richard Honey is the Retail Store Manager, Jo Ann Honey is the Community Development Manager and Diane Dietrich is the store’s Customer Service Associate. Robert wants everyone to know about their everyday discount of saving $5 when one buys $50 worth of products at regular price. The store is also actively taking orders for Organic and All Natural Turkeys for Thanksgiving. Robert has been married to Marilyn (left) for 56 years and has 2 children Beth and Beau, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He spends his spare time studying the Bible (God’s Word) and living the “love walk”. Frontière Natural Meets – Longmont is a true community partner. I have seen their support at community picnics

and barbecues in the few months they’ve been open. During my first visit to the store, I thought I would dash in and dash out. But what I found in addition to a good quality meat store, was a respite seating area where one could use wi-fi or spend a few minutes between appointments. Those places are always important to know about for those of us from the I-25 Corridor Communities. Robert loves seeing his customers happy and satisfied with his products. For him, it makes all the hard work to be successful, worthwhile. He also adds that he credits the success of the business with his Lord, Jesus Christ. “We could not have done this without him, now or ever,” says Robert. Store hours are: Monday 10a-6p, Tuesday 10a-6p, Wednesday 10a-5p, Thursday 9a-6p, Friday 10a-7p Richard Honey the Store Manager can be reached at 720-204-6813 or Richard@ Frontièrenaturalmeats.com. The store website is Frontièrelongmont. com and the firm can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook. com/FrontiereMeatsLongmont.

Like clothing and accessories, your home is a major outlet for expressing individuality. Are you an avid cook or enthusiastic entertainer? Then you probably have a gourmet kitchen or an inviting living room. Do you value your outdoor time? A garden outfitted for relaxing is probably on your wish list. However, you don’t have to empty your bank account to add more personality to your space. Consider the following easy and budget-friendly additions. 1. Add a touch of paint Painting is one of the most economical ways to add style and personality to your home. Whether you’re interested in painting the outside or inside, this is a project that can be handled quickly and with little fuss. Not interested in a full paint job? Don’t forget about the front door. A bold pop of door color can leave a lasting first impression. Go deep red for rustic, bright green for fun, or choose a luxurious black for sophistication. A bright green door is both welcoming and fun, while a shiny black finish adds glamour. 2. Seek out statement pieces While you may not be able to refurnish your entire home, you can add definitive style and personality by choosing a statement furniture piece. Pick fun dining room chairs to contrast a more standard table, or a brightly colored couch to offset an ordinary living space. Want to create a unique outdoor space? A glamorous chaise lounge is ideal for relaxing al fresco. 3. Install new hardware and fixtures Small details can make a large impression when it comes to showcasing your taste. If you’re big on family-style meals and gatherings, pick out a custom hanging light fixture to install above your dining room table. Spend tons of time in the kitchen? Pick out stylish drawer pulls for your cabinetry. Want a luxurious bathroom? Spa-style shower heads or a drop-in vessel sink can make a big impact. 4. One-of-a-kind finds Do you have a family member who is good with their hands? How about a skilled potter or craftsman? Enlist your loved ones to make custom statement pieces to showcase in your home. If you want to do the project yourself, there are hundreds of reputable outlets for DIY craftsmanship online these days. Not only will you have a piece unlike any other, but you will always have a great story behind that reclaimed pine coffee table. Find Face to

We’ve all heard the saying that less is more. But the latest research is showing MORE is better! Many friends on your facebook page may not even be seeing your posts! Why? If they don’t interact by clicking LIKE or commenting, your posts may not show up in their newsfeed. Your REACH is primarily dependent on your posts and the stories created by friends interacting with your posts. You may want to ask friends to go to your page, run their mouse over LIKED and then click “Get Notifications”. Page Administrators can create fantastic content combined with powerful images or dynamic website links, but if no one sees the posts, they’re not doing any good. What to do? Post daily. If you repeat some of your posts, that’s OK (people rarely remember today what you said 30 days ago). How do you increase your overall reach potential? Find the times that are best for your audience– and post daily during those times. Fear not, posting more than 1x per day won’t upset your friends. The ones who do see one (or more than one) post from you per day are probably happy to, as they only see these posts because they’ve displayed a high affinity to your page by liking/commenting/sharing. P.S. Don’t take this the wrong way and post more than 1x per day if you can’t provide valuable content in each of your posts. Less quantity with higher quality always trumps high quantity with lower quality. Jennie Poppenger, Face to Face: Call 303.518.0089 to schedule an appointment or visit

Frederick Seeking Photographs for Calendar Contest

The Town of Frederick and the Frederick Arts Commission are giving local photographers the chance to have their photos showcased in a full-sized 12-month ‘Built on What Matters’ calendar that will be sent to residents in Frederick for 2015. Photos must be taken in Frederick and photographers must explain why they feel it reflects the Town’s new brand promise: • • • • • •

We believe in rolling up our sleeves not just for ourselves, but for others. We believe in playing outside until the stars flicker on and protecting the hallowed ground of childhood. We believe in a lifelong commitment to actions as good as our intentions. We believe in the power of our voices and the obligation of our hearts to form a strong foundation. We believe we’re onto something that’s worth all we can give it. Here, the life we dream of is ours to create.

“We thought this calendar would showcase the new brand in a fun way residents can enjoy all year long,” said Frederick’s Community Relations Manager, Megan Williams. “And since it was our residents who inspired the brand promise, who can relate more to those statements than the people who live here and snap photos every day!?” Photographers are invited to either compose a new photo or submit one that’s been taken previously. Entries will be judged by the Arts Commission, the Mayor and Town Board and Town staff. There will also be a People’s Choice category that will be voted on by the public using the Town’s website photo gallery beginning November 3rd and ending November 14th. A Youth category is also available for young photographers ages 8-17. The winning photographers will be given credit for their photo as well as a spotlight about them and their photo in the calendar. Applications are available at www.frederickco.gov/calendarcontest or can also be picked up at Town Hall and are due October 30th.

Digital Data Services, Inc. Awarded Contract with the Bureau of Reclamation

Digital Data Services, Inc. (DDS) announced that it has been awarded a contract with the Bureau of Reclamation’s Ephrata Washington for data conversion and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data delivery. Under the agreement, DDS will scan, georeference, digitize, and attribute 200 hard-copy maps showing land classification, right-of-ways, and farm units. The Bureau of Reclamation performed studies in the 1960’s and 1970’s which evaluated soils, slope, and other factors to determine the suitability of land for irrigation. These studies produced a series of linen and mylar land classification maps that are generally done for each Public Land Survey (PLS) section. As a result of the Odessa Subarea Special Study

EIS findings, Reclamation, the State of Washington, and the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District are preparing to replace approximately 70,000 acres of groundwater- based irrigation with Columbia Basin Project surface water. DDS will convert the original mylar and linen maps into a fully attributed GIS format to assist in the analysis of irrigated lands. The converted land classification data will be used to determine eligibility for direct replacement or for an “infill” option that allows irrigators to move their operations closer to water conveyance facilities. “DDS is pleased to consult with Federal agencies in the conversion of spatial-related information into more viable GIS formats to assist in their analysis.” - said Scott C. Carter President of DDS, Inc. For additional information regarding Digital Data Services, Inc., please visit digitaldataservices.com.

Change the Mood with an Accent Wall

It’s easy to interest to a room by painting one wall a different color from the others. Typically the wall you see first when you enter a room is the focal wall, the easiest choice for an accent color. There are additional factors you can consider walls with large windows, built-ins, fireplaces, art work or other special features are also good choices, but you don’t want them to overwhelm the accent color. If they take up the entire wall

already, you may want to choose an adjacent wall. Many of our clients keep it simple by choosing a color on the color deck that is two to four shades darker than the rest of the room. You can also pull colors from an area rug, fabrics on your upholstery or drapes, art or accessories within the room. Colors such as blues, greens and purples will push walls painted in those hues away from you and would be excellent choices for a smaller or long and narrow room. These colors will also make the room seem cooler and darker. Colors such as reds, oranges and yellows can make that accent wall seem closer to you and are safer for a large room. These colors will brighten that room and also warm it. Cool colors usually work best in rooms with southern and western exposure and warm colors in north and east facing rooms. If you still aren’t sure what to do, ask your painting

Is Now a Good Time to Refinance Your Mortgage?

FRONT

By Eddie Stephen As a mortgage professional for the last 20 years; I frequently get asked, “Is now is a good time to refinance my mortgage”? The answer is a resounding YES! Here’s why; now is a great time to refinance: 1. Interest Rates are still incredibly low 2. Housing values have increased substantially over the last 24 months 3. Mortgage lenders have loosened up on lending requirements These 3 factors make it a great time to refinance. So what are the biggest reasons to refinance right now? 1. Get rid of Mortgage insurance to lower your monthly payment 2. Refinance to a shorter term & payoff your home quicker 3. Get cash out to pay off debt or make home improvements Right now, a lot of homeowners are refinancing to get rid of monthly Mortgage Insurance. Many people save hundreds monthly by getting rid of mortgage insurance. The general rule for Mortgage insurance is your loan needs to be at 80% of the appraised value. FHA loans will always have Mortgage Insurance but you may be able to refinance into a conventional loan and get rid of the monthly Mortgage Insurance. You can also refinance to lower the term of your loan. If, for instance, you currently have a 30 year mortgage, you can refinance into a 25, 20, 15, or 10 year mortgage. The lower the term of your loan, the less interest you will pay over the life of your loan. Interest rates are typically lower with shorter term loans. Many homeowners are refinancing to pay off debt. It’s smart to utilize your equity to payoff debt. Then you can use the money you are saving to pay extra against your mortgage (paying it off sooner and saving you even more interest). Mortgage interest is still a tax deduction, which means you will be paying a lot less interest than you will with Credit cards or other high interest loans. Just to be clear, this does not mean pay off your debt so you can charge up your credit cards again! Some people are refinancing to get cash out for Home Improvements. Now is a great time to get cash out and make some much needed home improvements. Many homeowners put off repairs to their homes while the economy was slow. Now that everything is picking up again, it’s a great time to fix up your house or make improvements. This also helps to increase your house value. Some repairs can even be a tax deduction at the end of the year (ask an accountant about which repairs have tax benefits). There are many good reasons to refinance. The best thing is call a local expert to help you look at your specific situation and see if refinancing is a good option. Eddie Stephen is a local Mortgage Professional who has been helping homeowners with their mortgages for 20 years Feel free to call 720-217-2200 or email estephen@loansimple.com with any questions.

Jen Kayton – A Financial Adviser Who Listens to Your Needs

Locally owned & operated by Tiffany 10 yrs. Experience

By Jan Sciacca Meaningful life is about meaningful relationships. When it comes to investment advice, one shouldn’t have to call an 800 number. I want to talk with someone who knows me and understands what I want to accomplish. Jen Kayton (below left) strives to be that person. Jen’s most memorable experience since being with Edward Jones was when she and a retired client spent more than an hour together in the client’s home reviewing her portfolio and addressing all her questions and concerns about her future. When Jen got up to leave her client gave her a big hug and asked, “Are you this nice to everyone?” The simple answer is “Yes.” Jen takes her role of helping people feel good about their financial goals and futures very seriously. Jen was appointed the Financial Adviser of Firestone’s Edward Jones branch in February, joining office administrator Connie Niles, (above right) who has been a continuing positive force in the office for six of the seven years the office has been in Firestone. Connie sets the tone by being the kind and warm-hearted person that makes people feel welcome and comfortable, both on the phone and when they visit the office. Then Jen listens to one’s needs and helps determine the most appropriate financial strategy for clients and helps them achieve their long-term financial goals with an investment plan that’s tailored specifically for them. Proven, long-term investment strategies are one of the principles of Edward Jones. Jen also strives to be of service in the community by providing valuable financial resources, offering investment solutions, and developing strong relationships with families and businesses in the area. The Firestone Edward Jones office focuses on working with families and business in Firestone, Frederick and Dacono although they will work nationally too. Jen works with people across many life stages and concentrates on a few key financial goals: planning for a comfortable retirement, enjoying retirement and creating a retirement income stream, paying for education, preparing for unexpected life events and offering tax advantaged investments. Jen lives a very active life with lots of interests. She is married and has three children, ages 11, 9 and 7. Like many families in the area she and her husband spend their time at their kids’ baseball and soccer games and share the juggling of homework and birthday parties. The Kaytons love living in Northern Colorado, and have lived in Colorado for about 20 years. An interesting fact about Jen is that she’s related to former NY Yankee shortstop Phil Rizzuto, who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. She is also an avid runner and is trying to prepare for a half marathon in the spring. She loves to “nose” around local used bookstores and libraries. As one who loves to read and write, Jen is a strong civic proponent of education. In addition, she’s penned her first novel, which is currently in the revision process. It’s not uncommon to find Jen meeting people on their doorsteps and introducing herself at Chamber of Commerce and business functions. She wants to learn about people’s values and goals. She decided to enter the financial-services industry because she likes helping people achieve their long-term financial goals. She says, “It is very rewarding to know that you are helping people live a comfortable retirement and send their kids to college.” Jen encourages people to drop in for a cup of coffee and get to know her and Connie. She is happy to provide free portfolio reviews so that people can gauge their status when it comes to retirement or college funding for their kids. Jen and Connie can be reached at 303.833.3123 or by visiting 8350 Colorado Blvd, Suite 130, Firestone, Mon-Thurs 8:30a-5:30p, Fri. 8:30a-3:00p and evenings and Saturdays by appointment. The company website is edwardjones.com. Jen can be reached at jen. kayton@edwardjones.com.

‘Tis the Season to Get a Job!

By now, retailers know how much staff they need to get through the holidays. Hiring begins in October, so get ready. To get ahead of the other would-be seasonal workers, follow these tips: Where to look: Retailers aren’t the only companies hiring. Opportunities also exist in areas like catering and shipping. Tax preparation classes usually start in September for January hire. Other good bets include warehouses, restaurants, and hotel and hospitality businesses. Be prepared: When you visit a business, be prepared to fill out an application and participate in an impromptu interview. Bring a pen, your resume, and a list of references. Dress professionally and block off enough time to meet with a few supervisors should the opportunity arise. Availability: The best way to make sure you stand out from other seasonal talent is to present yourself as flexible. Most seasonal jobs require you to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Make sure you understand these expectations and take the application process as seriously as you would for a permanent job. Attitude: If the seasonal job you want requires working with the public, portray yourself as someone who works well with different types of people and can handle even the most difficult shoppers with respect and a helpful attitude. Smile until your face hurts. A positive attitude is the number one thing seasonal hiring managers look for. Now you’ve got everything you need for your seasonal job search. Don’t forget to start early so you can beat the rush and secure your new position. For help with your resume or online application, visit the Job Zone at the Carbon Valley Regional Library Tuesdays, 1:00-2:30pm, or make an appointment with a librarian by calling 720-685-5100. ~ The Job Zone Team, Carbon Valley Regional Library

Fire Prevention Week to Focus on Smoke Alarms

SolarCity Offers Rooftop Solar By Jan Sciacca

“Finding you amazing experiences that create memories that last a lifetime!”

Judy Bakanec, Owner

Specialist in:    

Eric Kleffner, at age 25 is a field energy consultant for SolarCity. He was raised in Erie and now lives in old town Firestone. He’s living his “dream” by working in the solar industry. Not too very long ago, he felt he was in a “dead-end” job working at a temp agency. He knew he wanted to get into the solar industry but did not know how since he had no experience. Being the assertive type of guy he is, one day he got fed up with the online application and decided to drive to SolarCity at 76th and Washington and hand in his application. Before he entered the door to SolarCity, he screamed at the top of his lungs, “I GOT THE JOB!!” Even though he hadn’t met anyone yet and didn’t know if there was a job opening or even what type of job that might be. He was an example of faith in action! The receptionist asked him “Are you here for the interview?” He hesitated and then said, “YES!” Later he was asked by the SolarCity recruiter how he knew that interviews were being conducted that day, since he wasn’t on their list of interviewees. Eric responded that he had come in randomly but expected an interview. The recruiter then smiled and replied “I believe in fate, let me give you a call on Saturday.” As the saying goes, the rest is history, with him recently being promoted to the field energy consultant role. SolarCity is the largest residential solar company in the United States and an American provider of energy services, just like Excel Energy and United Power. The company was founded by the creator of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk and his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive. SolarCity works specifically in the Colorado Front Range area, but has locations in 13 other states, as well as Washington D. C. The company provides energy through rooftop solar. The solar system is installed on a customer’s roof at little or no cost (Depends on program chosen by customer i.e. lease or purchase). After the system is on a customer’s roof, the consumer simply purchases the energy from the sun at a cheaper rate then their utility company. The benefits of going solar are solar increases home value (see study done by School of Mines called “Asset or Eyesore?”), the homeowner pays a less expensive energy bill and the homeowner receives tax credits and rebates. In order to reap the benefits of the solar program, you must be a homeowner, use Xcel, United Power or IREA as your energy company, have a person in the household who has a credit score of 680 or higher (for financing options) and spend $40 or more for electricity each month. In addition, your roof has to have a good “look angle” to the sun, with no trees in the way and the roof must be in good condition. Technology has allowed rooftop solar to be very affordable. Eric believes in his product. He has always believed in solar and always wanted solar on his home and now he has it. Eric is currently engaged and hopes to get married soon. He has 2 small children, daughter Layla who is 2 years old and son Preston who is 4 months old. When he’s not helping clients save money on their energy bills, he loves to ride his skateboard down steep hills and garden vegetables. Eric believes in treating his customers with respect and earns their trust by doing the right thing. He offers free quotes and can be reached by phone, text or email. Matthew and Kayla Chase of Firestone purchased solar from Eric recently. They comment, “Eric is genuine and passionate about solar. He explained everything in detail to help us understand our options when we went solar on our home.” Eric can be reached at 720-227-3748 or ekleffner@SolarCity. com. The company’s website is SolarCity.com.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 5-11, will focus on “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives; Test Yours Every Month!” The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has been putting together Fire Prevention Week since 1925, which helps local agencies like the FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District educate residents about the importance of Fire Prevention. During Fire Prevention Week, Frederick-Firestone F.P.D crews will talk to preschool, 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 5th grade students within its District about the importance of fire safety. Below are some fire facts about home smoke alarms. • Almost three of five (60%) of reported home fire deaths in 2007 to 2011 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. • In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 93% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 79% of the time. • When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead. • An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, or where extra time is needed, to awaken or assist others, both types of alarms, or combination ionization and photoelectric alarms are recommended. For more fire facts or for more information about Fire Prevention Week, please visit NFPA’s Fire Prevention Week site at www. firepreventionweek. org.

Always An Answer

Improve Athletic Performance With Help From A Trainer

Whether you are a youth athlete or an adult that plays on a team, a weekend warrior, or you just like to go outdoors to play and have fun, most of you will want to improve your fitness abilities so you can perform at your highest personal level. The goal of any sport training program should be to improve overall athletic performance and increase strength levels. It’s also designed to focus on agility, endurance, power, balance, speed, mechanics, mobility, stability, flexibility, improve skills, goal setting, nutrition, acceleration/deceleration development, recovery techniques, and to reduce the risk of injury. Many things would be determined by the sport they participate

in, their specific needs based on imbalances of muscles, strengths, and weaknesses, but the most sports specific training that can be done is by participating in the sport itself. One sport that I’ve enjoyed every year is downhill skiing in our beautiful Rocky Mountains (photo above). I started skiing with my brother when I was very young, and now I get to enjoy this sport with my husband and daughter. As the weather starts to cool down, it’s time to focus on sport specific exercises for downhill skiing so you’re ready to hit the slopes with your family and friends by the time December rolls around. If you enjoy skiing and want to start on your sport training before ski season arrives, contact Tracy Rewerts, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Women’s Fitness Specialist at TimeForChangePersonalTraining.com or 303-8282856 to find out more about my services which include weekly fitness classes, mobile personal training, and nutrition consults.

We just returned from a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on the largest cruise ship in the world, the Allure of the Seas. I was hesitant to cruise on such a large ship since my husband and I love the small ships. Boy, was I surprised! With as many as almost 6400 passengers, I was expecting crowds everywhere. We found so many places on the ship that provided intimate and quiet spots. We walked the Broadwalk with the merry-go-round, hot dog stand, donut shop and a Johnny Rocket’s hamburger spot. We strolled Central Park with beautiful live trees and foliage. We watched surfers on the Flowrider (the wave simulator), adventurous types on the zipline and rock climbing walls. The kid’s program was amazing from the smallest children to the teens that had their own lounge for hanging out. Jerry and I saw professional, entertaining shows every night from comedians to the Broadway show “Chicago”. We were busy but found time to catch up on our books, challenged each other to a few games of Scrabble and just “people” watched. The mix of passengers ranged from infants to those in their 80’s. Lot’s of families, honeymooners, retired couples and groups. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has certainly gone to great lengths to design this ship so passengers feel comfortable and welcome. The embarkation and disembarkation were as smooth as can be. For the amount of people on the ship, I found both to be very efficient. We found the crew to be helpful and friendly. Food was amazing and even those with special diets were accommodated and pleased with the results. Painting a picture for you of our experiences on the ship is difficult because it was so wonderful. You just need to experience the ship for yourself. If you’re looking for a great experience on your vacation, the Allure of the Seas would be for you. If you’d like more information on this or any other vacation, please contact Judy Bakanec at Going Places Travel. 303-485-9930 or judy@goingplaces-travel.com

Camp Imagine Adopts Settlers Park

Fall is in the air and our Imagine Campers (Imagine Charter School at Firestone’s Before and After school program) are stepping right into our community and lending a helping hand. Our first Early Release Day was on September 3rd. We worked alongside Kristi Ritter with The Town of Firestone to, “Adopt Settlers Park”. These campers did an amazing job of cleaning up the park they adopted and put forth an amazing effort. What an incredible sense of pride and ownership these young children took to, “Their Park”. At Camp Imagine we are excited to be a part of this growing community and lend a helping hand at keeping it clean and putting it into motion. We are looking forward to being involved in many community events this year. Happy fall from Camp Imagine.

Six Measures of Excellence

At Imagine Schools, we believe in accountability and continual improvement, reflecting our understanding that test scores alone do not measure how well a school is performing. We believe that operating a successful school requires constant attention in six important areas that we call Measures of Excellence, by which we evaluate our organization and each of our schools. Our Six Measures of Excellence are the yardsticks we use to evaluate our effectiveness in providing a challenging, effective program of study and strong moral development in a safe, nurturing environment. We grade ourselves annually on how we are performing – where we are excelling and where we can improve. The Six Measures of Excellence are: Shared Values of integrity, justice, and fun allow every teacher, student, and parent associated with Imagine Schools to unite around common themes that guide our collective behavior. Parent Choice and Satisfaction are the most reliable indicators of the quality of our schools. Academic Growth balances instruction in reading, math, science, social studies, and the arts, and is measured by student learning gains as well as proficiency. Positive Character Development in our schools is a high priority. We strive for growth in students’ character measured by positive changes in behavior and world view. Economic Sustainability means every school in our family is financially able to stand on its own, which is the best indicator of that school’s ability to continue educating children over the long term. School Development enhances our ability to reach more children, more families, and more communities. As we increase our family of schools, more opportunities abound for Imagine Schools’ educators to grow professionally as well. BEST Source for Local Advertising Firestone Begins Plans for Water Line and Street Replacement in Historic Firestone

United Power to Begin Study of Street Light Upgrade and Undergrounding of Power Lines The engineering design for a portion of the water line replacement in Historic Firestone will begin this fall as Town staff determines a plan for the multi-phase project expected to take several years. Firestone Public Works Director Theo Abkes said the water lines in Firestone’s historic area were installed in 1976 and are now outdated and undersized for current needs. While current water demands are being met for homes and fire operations, many of these water lines need to be replaced with larger diameter pipe to meet future demands and regulations. Town staff is attempting to coordinate replacement of the waterlines with street repairs and replacements, as water lines will need to be replaced before street repairs can begin. Street condition, traffic and existing waterline size will be factors in determining the prioritization of the work to be completed in Historic Firestone. Alongside the Historic Firestone street improvements, Town staff has instructed United Power, the Town’s electric supplier, to begin a comprehensive study and design of undergrounding the existing overhead power lines in the area. United Power will also be determining the needs and costs associated with upgrading street lights to LED technology. Based on the study and cost estimates, the Town may utilize a 1.5 percent credit that United Power banks on the Town’s behalf from all Firestone revenues. This credit is often utilized by municipalities to offset the costs of projects. Bill Meier, community affairs representative for United Power, said while LED lights will cost more upfront to install, the reduction of energy consumption will be by almost two-thirds. “LED lighting is the most modern and latest technology that requires less maintenance, offers higher quality lighting and increases the Town’s sustainability efforts.” The replacement of water lines will be funded through the Town’s water fund, while the street repairs will be funded through the dedicated sales tax increase passed by residents in November 2013. The undergrounding and street light upgrades will be funded through the United Power credits available to the Town, which at last report is approximately $1.2 million. Based on the estimated costs of the undergrounding and street light upgrades, the project will be phased as funds are accumulated.

State Farm Insurance, Malyka E Korgan, Agent, Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

The Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce welcomed new business owner, Malyka E Korgan, State Farm Insurance Agent, Thursday, August 28, to the business community in a ribbon cutting ceremony held at their new Firestone location in the Cimarron shopping center. Malyka is not a newcomer to the Carbon Valley Community. She grew up on a Dairy located in East Firestone, and is now very pleased to be named the most recent State Farm Agent assigned to the area. State Farm explained that growth projections for the Carbon Valley make the area North of Highway 52 and South of Highway 66 ripe for agents, confirming that Longmont has many more agents serving a similarly populated radius. Malyka and her sister, Justice, are looking forward to making professional connections and building their business. Malyka has been an employee of State Farm at their Operations Center in Greeley for 16 years. After an extensive interview process, she was thrilled at the opportunity to begin practicing as an Agent near her childhood home. The ribbon cutting was attended by Paul Sorensen, Firestone Mayor, Carbon Valley Chamber Board of Directors, Ambassadors and additional family and friends of the business owner. You can call Malyka at 720.204.6817 or visit her at 11078 Cimarron Street, Unit D in Firestone.

Frederick Hosts Fall Clean Up Day Oct. 4

Having Fire Sprinklers in Unfinished Basement Doubles the Escape Time in the Event of a Fire

Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District Division Chief and Fire Marshal Dave Puccetti has worked hard with the Town of Frederick and the Town of Firestone in getting the new 2012 Residential Building Code adopted to improve safety in new single-family homes with unfinished basements, which requires new residential construction to have fire sprinkler system installed in unfinished basements or for the ceiling to be covered with drywall to double occupancy escape times in the event of a fire. “This is one of the greatest accomplishments I have seen in my career. Not only does it double escape times, it always will keep the fire contained and limits the damage to the home. With the addition of residential fire sprinklers we can reduce fire deaths and injuries in our homes,” Puccetti said. Jason Overholt, the Chief Building Official for the Town of Frederick, said, “We have to take baby steps and this is a great first step to improve safety in single-family homes.” Lennar Homes, who is currently building homes in the Wyndham Hill subdivision off of Colo. Highway 52 in Frederick, recently installed the residential fire sprinklers in one of their first homes in the Frederick area The fire sprinklers installed by Lennar in the basement offer a 15’-by-15’ coverage in a full pressure loop water system. So in other words, every time the faucet is turned on the water moves through the pipes so you know your fire sprinkler system is always working. Chief Puccetti said that what makes the fire sprinklers in the basement so important is it doubles the escape time for the homeowner in the event of a fire. “It may not save the house, but it will increase the escape time for the homeowner to get out,” he said. The Town of Frederick and the Town of Firestone both adopted the new 2012 Residential Building Code in the first half of 2014.

The Firestone Cultural Committee is excited to partner once again with the Carbon Valley Regional Library to host the Firestone Art & Music Show in October 2014. The show will highlight more than 25 Carbon Valley artists with artwork on display throughout October. A reception is set for Oct. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, 7 Park Ave., Firestone. The Firestone Art and Music Show will feature local artists from Firestone, Frederick, Dacono and Mead. The reception will offer an opportunity for artists to visit with guests, listen to live music by regional musicians Kelly Aspen and Branden Sipes, view live art demonstrations, take part in children’s craft activities and enjoy refreshments compliments of the Firestone Cultural Committee. Most of the artwork is listed for sale. New to the reception this fall is the addition of children’s activities and live art demonstrations. The Home Depot in Firestone will offer children’s activities and crafts during the reception where kids can express their creativity. In addition, select artists will be doing live art demonstrations during the show, including acrylic painting, watercolors and yarn spinning. “Historically speaking, art and music have recorded culture by expressions based on the region, cultures, traditions and religions,” said Teresa Curtis, Firestone Cultural Committee member. “It is when these expressions come together in the form of public art displays that a community is considered an ‘up and coming’ area to live in, with a secure, forward moving community. The Firestone Art and Music Show is an opportunity for Carbon Valley residents to learn, connect and share in the presentation of the burgeoning artistic talents within the Carbon Valley area.” There is still space available for artists to get involved. For more information or to sign up as an artist, visit www.FirestoneCO.gov /FirestoneArtMusicShow.

TOTALLY

Food for the Soul Why Integrity Matters

By Jim Coleman In 2007 I left my nine-month employment at a Boulder company over issues of integrity. While some concern themselves not with such matters in the workplace, I could not continue to work in a situation demanding my representation of matters of fact that I came to know might not be the same as I was presenting them to prospective clients. Why is it such a big deal? Because to my Lord, integrity matters. He is the God of all truth. He says that “the sum of His Word is truth.” (Psalm 119:160) If truth is so important to the Lord of the universe, then it should matter to us as well. If we name ourselves as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, then our habits and principles need to align with those of our Maker. When God set in motion the universe we know and love, He set in place some unchanging forces, or laws of nature. Were it not so, we could have no confidence in anything around us, for it could all change at the drop of a hat. But physical laws, like the second law of thermodynamics, which states that everything tends towards inertia, are solid ground for scientists and others to postulate upon and reach conclusions. Because they don’t change. God is like that, in fact in the New Testament we read (Hebrews 13:8) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.” He is eternally reliable because He is eternally the same. He doesn’t need to improve because

He is God already. He doesn’t need to “sharpen His wit” because He is already all-knowing. And His stability grants stability to the universe. We read in Hebrews 1:3 regarding our Creator, “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.” Jesus keeps everything “ticking” due to His extreme integrity. In this era of extreme sports we desperately need a revival of extreme integrity. In the old days, a man’s word was his bond. Today, even when contracts are signed, most people believe that ‘rules are made to be broken’, so there is little value in a contract when the majority don’t always mean what they say or what they sign. I believe every man and woman who professes to have integrity needs to carefully examine their corresponding actions and words and earnestly strive to keep all commitments made. Think what a difference our world would see if suddenly we didn’t need thousands of attorneys to sue companies over product malfunction or various and sundry grievances. They could all get other gainful employment, and the courts could prosecute criminal cases instead of “I spilled coffee in my lap and it’s your fault” cases. Until and unless the average businessman or woman and each of their employees regain a sense of integrity that is sadly lacking today, we will continue to deal with employee theft and shoplifting and all manner of petty and more serious crimes that ultimately cost our society a great deal. More than the financial burden is the cost to the human soul when deceit and dishonesty is the norm. Stress medication gets consumed by the ton, and anxiety rules

instead of peace and calm. Productivity declines due to the amount of time needed to “watch over” the crew, when they should be working independently of supervision, and would if their values were higher. I helped start a company after this experience, and we named it Integrity. We are in the same line of work as before, but with honesty as a corporate value, and seeking employees who share those values, we experience far less challenge with these workplace issues. God wants everyone to develop the same principles of truth-telling and being a person of your word even though it will hurt sometimes. He tells us in Psalms 15:4 that the righteous man “swears to his own hurt, and does not change.” That means you keep your word, period. The more of us who take up the banner of truth-telling, the less will be the need for extra provisions and protections in the law. Maybe you should impose on yourself a little truth serum before you make your next deal or sign your next contract. It can’t hurt, and may actually save you a lot of pain down the road. Jim pastors Abundant Life Church, which meets at 4380 Highway 66 (just 3/10 mile east of I25 on the south side) at 10:00 am each Sunday. Come study some truth with us.

Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Recently, I was asked by three people for information about what they could do to address their most recent health concerns; physical stress injury, alcohol recovery & stress, and follow up after Lyme disease. Since two of the people do not live here, I wanted to send a few ideas that they could easily do at home. Even though each person is very different, the common thread is inflammation. For humans, inflammation is the root of all evil and can lead to more serious conditions such as heart disease, cancer, asthma, arthritis and any other health concern that we can think of. To help prevent this, repair must occur deeply, at the cellular level, with one of the most important aspects being proper pH. When the system is acidic, inflammation increases. When the system is neutral or slightly alkaline, systemic inflammation decreases. There are foods that help the body maintain a more neutral to slightly alkaline pH. A few of the foods on the list are taken from ‘Healing with Whole Foods’ by Paul Pitchford: z Fermented Foods: Fermented Apple Cider Vinegar, Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Yogurt z Foods high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Krill Oil, Fish Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Chia, Pumpkin seeds, Walnuts, Cold Water Fish, (sardine, salmon, trout) Raw Honey, Bee Pollen, Chlorella and Leafy Green Vegetables z Omega 3, 6, 7 & 9 Fatty Acids and high Vitamin C: Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil Two easy practices that reduce inflammation by gently detoxifying the system and by getting the blood and lymph moving: 1. Castor Oil (stay with me, not for internal ingestion!): Do NOT use during pregnancy Purchase a “castor oil pack” at a health food store, or... Rub a quarter sized dollop of castor oil clockwise around the umbilicus, making wider circles until reaching below the rib cage and above the pubic bone. To protect your clothing from stains, cover the area with an old pillow case, tea towel, etc., then place a heating pad, hot water bottle, or heat a damp towel in the microwave, and place over the abdomen. Rest for 20 to 30 minutes. It is very relaxing right before bed. * Castor Oil and Chlorella work very well to guide out systemic toxicity and stagnant accumulations in the digestive system slowly and gently. 2. End showers with cold water: forces your body to warm itself and circulate blood; focus the cold water in the areas heavy with lymph nodes: neck, armpits and groin As always, please feel free to call with any questions! HEALTHY A letter to you Dear Reader,

I want to speak to the stay-at-home moms who don’t feel as if they have time to devote to taking care of themselves. I am also speaking to the overworked dads who are so tired after a long days work trying to provide for their families and not feeling as if there is enough time or energy to devote to taking care of themselves. I am addressing the college and high school students who are overbooked with homework and are too sleep deprived to have any energy to devote to staying healthy. I want to talk to the grandparents who are helping to raise grandchildren or are still working into older age due to the strain on the economy. This letter is for anyone reading who feels overwhelmed, drained, fatigued, unhealthy, depressed, and lost. Now is your time to take control of your own destiny. It is time to get serious about making changes in your life. Each day will pass by whether you are making changes or not, so why not decide to take your future in to your own hands. There are twenty-four hours in every day. Working out and eating healthy only requires 4% of your time. Think about the time that is spent in front of the television, on video games, social networking on your smart phone or simply procrastinating. Give an honest look at your daily routine and decide where you can make some changes. Taking care of yourself equates to being able to take care of the ones you love in the long run. It decreases the chances of someone else having to take care of you because of health related illnesses. It decreases the burden on your family. It allows you to fulfill daily responsibilities required to run a household. Being proactive and taking care of yourself will save you money on medical bills and prescriptions that are associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, and diabetes. Think about it, wouldn’t you rather live a comfortable, happy, healthy life and sacrifice a little bit of the time that you think you don’t have right now to allow yourself to get healthy? Life is a gift. We only have one shot at it… there is no rewind button! Act right now! If you need someone to help you get started and someone who will be a support system to you, call me! My desire is to reach as many people in the community as possible. You deserve to truly live a healthy and gratifying life. Don’t sit on the side-lines…. Get onto the field and make a play! We are here to cheer you on. I offer personal training, lifestyle transformations and nutritional consultations. Shelly N. Porcaro, NASM-CES/ CPT, SFN. Simone Physical Medicine: New Location More Hours

We’ve moved! But not too far--just down the street to Ft. Lupton. It has been such an honor to serve those in the Tri-Towns for the past 15 years and we appreciate the support you have shown us. The good news is that there will be exciting changes and, at the same time, no changes. We still take all insurances--United Health Care, Kaiser, BC/BS, Aetna, Medicare, PHS, and more. Medicaid is the only insurance company we do not participate with. Probably the most exciting changes will be our extended availability and expanded hours. We have shared our office with Dr. Eric Smith, board certified in Family Practice, the past 10 years (he will still occupy the Dacono clinic). Our office hours have been restricted--but no more. We have been surveying our patients and will adjust them to make our clinic more convenient. We plan to open much earlier, be available more days, and plan to have Saturday morning hours. Our office phone will automatically transfer to our cell and, because we live a short walk from the clinic, we will be more available for after hours emergencies. Our new clinic is 2 blocks past the railroad tracks on the left--across the street from the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store. The address is 1111 1st. Street, Ft. Lupton, 80621. Our phone number will stay the same--303-833-2332. And for those of you who don’t know how I practice chiropractic medicine, let me share a few things with you. I practice in an evidenced-based manner, never ask you to commit to multiple visits, never ask you to sign a contract for treatment, and I help you modify your daily activities so you can get back to normal faster and stay that way longer. And I’m now certified to perform DOT CDL driver’s license examinations. Again, thanks to everyone for their support and please stop by and see the new clinic. Dr. Simone holds a BS in Biology from the College of William and Mary and graduated from Logan University, Magna Cum Laude, with a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine.

The air has that morning chill and the leaves are beginning to turn to their golds, scarlets and lime colors as the season sets in to create some of the most gorgeous photos in the county. For the Auxiliary, it has been a very busy summer and now getting back to basics is the goal. We, at the Legion, will be back with our Monday night dinners ($5 to $6) and Monday Night Darts. The Friday Night Dinners ($7 to $12) return on October 3 with our Fish Fry for $8. The meals are always good and healthy and we will be offering some nice evening meals. Stop by the post to see what is cooking. We will host a Halloween Costume Party on October 31st and kick it off with a steak or salmon dinner for $12. There will be a costume contest along with live entertainment so come on down for some good old fashioned fun. We are also doing a pumpkin carving contest (details available at the post.) Members and guests are always welcome. If you know of anyone that is not a member and would like to visit us, please call and we will be glad to show you around. We were proud and honored to take part in the Sons of the American Legion Flag Retirement on September 13th at the Legion. SAL Commander, Joel Long, has taken the reins in this event which will be semi-annually or more often as is required to properly retire these tired flags. We thank you, Joel, for a job well done. On September 14th, we were excited to be a part of the Rotary’s Honor Flight Miles of Smiles. If you have never attended one of these events, mark your calendars for May when the next one rolls down I-25. It is a very rewarding sight for our veterans who gave so much to see Old Glory waving proudly in the breeze in their honor. Coming in November will be our annual Santa Cops Toys for Tots fund raiser scheduled for November 8 at the American Legion Post. More details will be given in the November issue but please mark the calendar for this event. It is always fun and very rewarding. American Legion Auxiliary, Donna Lane, dlaney2342@ msn.com, 303-833-4172.

June 11, 1939 to September 20, 2014

June Noreen Menger of Longmont died at her residence September 20, 2014. She was 75. June was born on June 11, 1939 in Arriba, Colorado to Roger McDonald and Nora Emery McDonald. Raised on the plains of eastern Colorado, she loved life there as a young girl. She graduated from Arriba High School in 1957. June married Richard Wells on June 23, 1957 in Arriba. The couple moved following Dick’s career, landing in Longmont in 1969. She worked for Safeway, as their Deli Manager for 30 years, retiring in 2000. She married Jim Menger on September 17, 1984 in Idaho Springs, Colorado. The Menger’s just celebrated 30 beautiful years together. This devastating event, led her to take an active role in helping investigators, District Attorneys and most importantly families suffering a similar loss. She was appointed to the first board of Cold Case Task Force. She also served on Parents of Murdered Children and Victims of Homicide and Missing Persons (FOHVAMP). She did this as a quiet, compassionate, dedicated servant to not just her pain, but the struggle for parents of this type of loss and the pursuit of finding, arresting and closing these cases. June enjoyed traveling with her husband and children around not only the United States, but many trips overseas, including stops in multiple European countries. She had joined the

Longmont Senior Center, where she took classes and joined the quilting classes. Preceding her in death are her parents; her first husband Richard Wells and son Sidney Lee Wells. Surviving are her husband James Menger of Longmont; sons Robert Wells (Sharla) and Samuel Wells both of Longmont, step-sons Joe (Darla) Menger of Pinewood Springs, James (Connie) Menger of Lafayette and Chris (Jen) Menger of Arvada; granddaughter Sharlene Wells of Ft. Collins; great grandson Coleton Warembourg; 15 step grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, a brother James (Loretta) McDonald of Sacramento, California; a sister Maureen Jacobs of Shreveport, Louisiana; and nieces and nephews Debra Callahan, Larry McDonald, and Bob McDonald. Funeral services were held September 27, at LifeBridge Christian Church. Interment followed at the Arriba Cemetery, Arriba, Colorado. Contributions may be made to the FOHVAMP, 1067 South Hover St., Unit E-148, Longmont, CO 80501. Please share your thoughts, memories and condolences with the family at www.howemortuary.com.
