Creating Community By Connecting Neighbors “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit...”

Go Sober with Greg Hoffman

By Peggy Blewett It is that time of year where everyone is thinking about making New Year’s Resolutions; making changes to better themselves. But it’s not just about losing unwanted pounds, deep cleaning the house or trying a new hobby. Many others want to stop drinking. That is where Go Sober can help you. Currently, there are about 2,300 people in Weld county seeking treatment for alcoholism. If Go Sober can touch just 10 percent of them they will be helping over 200 individuals repair damaged lives that were otherwise lost forever. That’s good for them, their families; and our community. Greg Hoffman started Go Sober in March of 2014, but he has been improving the model for the last four and a half years. Go Sober helps people stop drinking but more importantly ensure they remain sober. Go Sober is not a rehab nor is it based on AA or 12-step concepts. It’s real medical treatment addressing the underlying neurophysical mechanism that makes it difficult for people to remain sober. They use medications that stop anxiety and irritability caused by persistent thoughts of drinking. Then through lifestyle changes they get them feeling great naturally so there’s no looking back. By treating the problem and not just the symptoms they make it easier for people to quit and be done once and for all so they can start enjoying life, family and friends. Go Sober stays current with up to date research and published studies about helpful new medications and treatment techniques. Their treatment model represents the latest understanding of neuroscience, behavioral science and pharmacology in the treatment of alcohol addiction. Go Sobers success depends on the expertise of their trained and certified, local professionals in medicine, nutrition, counseling, lifestyle coaching, stress management and movement therapy. Each professional is part of a coordinated team of service providers whose only goal is the long term health and wellbeing of their clients. Each team member is a dedicated individual who has first-hand knowledge of alcohol addiction and successful experience treating it. Greg himself, knows the battle so many of us face with

Ep 5:18

alcohol addiction. He watched his Dad, who was a successful medical doctor drink his life away and at the very young age of 70 pass away from liver failure. Greg saw himself headed down that same road. He wanted to understand why he couldn’t just quit and why it was so hard for him to go even a couple of days without alcohol. What he found out was really surprising because addiction researchers know what the problem is but most “treatments” ignore that information. Greg wants to change that and that is where Go Sober can help you out. Go Sober understands that alcoholism isn’t a character defect or lack of willpower. There’s no reason for people to beat themselves up because they can’t stay sober on their own. There’s also no reason not to get treatment just because something they tried before didn’t work. Almost all “treatments” fall into one of two categories: they either control the environment or they talk about changes. And, while neither is particularly harmful, neither addresses the underlying problem. According to www.gosober.org, “years of alcohol abuse changes the normal function of specific neuroreceptors in the brain. These receptors called GABA-A receptors are responsible for initiating a sequence of chemical events that result in the production of dopamine. Dopamine helps us feel calm, relaxed and content. Drugs and alcohol produce abnormally large spikes in dopamine. The brain recognizes this and over time attempts to regulate its production to a more normal level by desensitizing the GABA receptors. When a person stops drinking, the desensitized GABA receptors are unable to initiate production of sufficient dopamine so the individual experiences anxiety and stress. This is what sets up the failure mechanism, a persistent anxiety that’s difficult to ignore even with the stoutest resolution.” If you are looking to get help call Go Sober at (303)827-4837 or log on to www.gosober. org . If you mention you saw this article in the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and decide to get treatment or refer someone who ultimately gets treatment from them, they will give you 20% off their normal fees. That means you/they get sober and get on with their lives for less than the cost of a DUI and less than what would probably be spent on alcohol in a year. So don’t keep struggling on your own, seek help at Go Sober. Greg is available by email at GregH@gosober.org and the office is located at 500 Coffman Street, Suite 101 in Longmont and their hours are Monday thru Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment.

The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

What’s On My Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher

What’s New in 2015 Shedding a few tears is usually a part of uploading this publication to the printer. When there is nothing else I can do to it, I always thank God as I start to unwind and focus on the accomplishments of the previous weeks work. As this particular paper is wrapping up, I am especially grateful to be celebrating the start of my 16th year of business in the Carbon Valley, my 3rd year in Mead and now, drum roll please…the debut of the Erie Consumer Report! It is an achievement that I did not pursue nor plan, but one that the Lord has allowed me to continue. I am humbled by this gift. And for God’s continued guidance, inspiration and strength to continue and now expand. It’s a privilege to meet and then introduce to you, the huge variety of business owners in the areas we serve. One business I’ve been particularly blessed by is Aesthetic Flooring and Hard Surfaces. We wrote a feature article on them in the March issue after they moved to a building with much better visibility and more space for their showroom and inventory. A few months later while volunteering at the Dacono Music Festival, Jan Sciacca (CVCR Ad Sales) heard that The Carbon Valley Help Center’s carpet was in dismal shape. Jan shared the need of the organization with those at Aesthetic Flooring and in August, owner Silverio Garcia donated carpet and installation to the Help Center. It was the generous spirit of the staff at Aesthetic Flooring and their huge selection of products that helped me decide to personally utilize their services. Now my living room and my office has new, plush carpet that adds comfort and class to my home. I was 100% satisfied from the removal of my old carpet to the installation of the new. The service technicians were professional from start to finish, including moving my furniture back into place. I could not have been happier with the whole process. It’s been the biggest blessing of my year. Jan’s abilities to network are the true definition of our tag line: Creating Community by Connecting Neighbors. Once again, Jan heard of a need and made a connection. This time the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce had a need for an event sponsor that was met by Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers. Thank you, Jan, for watching out for ALL of us. You continue to be the greatest gift to this business and I count you as one of the most valuable assets.

Jan, Peggy (writer) and I work diligently to introduce you to the businesses in the areas we serve. We want you to know of the honest automotive mechanics and the gentle dentists and the compassionate pet care providers in and around the areas we all live. We hope you will choose to invest your hard earned dollars with the local businesses in your communities. I am continually contacted by readers who share how the CVCR has helped them in one way or another. I thank God that He uses the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the Consumer Report of Mead, your community newspapers, to help and serve the readers of Dacono, Firestone, Frederick, Longmont, and Mead. I’m thankful to say that we will debut the all-new Erie Consumer Report this month. It will be in Erie readers’ mailboxes by January 15 and is focused completely on the Town of Erie. I have no doubt that Jan will continue the efforts of connecting the needs of some with the provisions of others as we move into 2015. I found today’s emailed Bible verse and explanation so appropriate: “Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest.” Proverbs 14:4 Explanation: This interesting verse focuses on two possible approaches to risk and personal investment. You can choose a “clean stable,” avoiding the dirt, mess, and hassle of taking care of the “ox” (pet, child, opportunity). But then you also miss out on the reward: what the “ox” could bring into your life (“a large harvest”). Certainly there are times to “buy the ox” and times not to. As opportunities present themselves, pray about whether this is an “ox” that’s worth all that’s entailed with giving up a “clean stable.” —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions Having the responsibility of another publication is hard work but if it’s anything like the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the Consumer Report of Mead, well, the rewards will be great. I can count on that because I can count on my Lord to continue to fulfill His promises; not only to those of us at the paper, but to you all, as well.

Bits & Pieces of Carbon Valley lllley Service Flag During World War II Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. organization was formed in the United States to provide support for mothers who had sons and or daughters in active service in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a “Service Flag” in a window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the military. Living servicemen were represented by a Blue star and those who had lost their lives were represented by a Gold star.

The Tri-Town American Legion Post #1985 would like to provide a Service Flag to proudly display in the front window of your family home. If your family has a son, daughter, father, mother currently serving in the military, email us at info@ americanlegion1985.org and title it “service flag”.

Please include NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT NUMBER, and number of current member(s) serving and or have given their life during service in the military. We will get your family a SERVICE FLAG as soon as possible. If you are interested in more information about Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. visit their web site www.bluestarmothers.org.

The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

Vol. 16, Issue 1

More Frederick Power/Electricity Information Letter to the Editor:

This letter is to provide another update regarding Frederick’s expressed intent to acquire the New Town electrical system from the United Power cooperative. I understand from United Power representatives who are coordinating the inventory of the Newtown distribution equipment that it is almost complete and that it is expected to be shared with the Town by the end of 2014. As discussed on both the Town’s and United Power’s websites regarding this issue, the Town and United Power will then independently value the equipment, which is expected to take at least another three to four months. As noted on United Power’s website, state statutes prescribe how the valuation is to be done, “The present-day reproduction cost, new, of the electric distribution facilities being acquired, less depreciation computed on a straight-line basis over thirty-five years with such depreciation being limited to one-half of such cost.” Since most of the Newtown equipment is relatively new, the purchase price of the acquired system will not be significantly depreciated. At some point, the Town and United Power must resolve any valuation differences and if this cannot be done it will be referred to the courts to decide. United Power’s website also points out that the Town will have to compensate United Power for the cost of constructing any necessary facilities to reintegrate its system. The electric system in the annexed areas is “integrated” in United Power’s wider system to provide a path for the power, and to provide alternate paths in the event of an equipment failure or other emergency outages. The Newtown system must be completely separated physically from the remaining United Power system for safety and reliability reasons. The Town will have to “uncouple” from United Power’s system by building a stand-alone system, including expensive feeder lines, and invest in whatever additional equipment it needs to accomplish this at its cost. Note that this is all in addition to the value of the present Newtown equipment inventory discussed above. It has been stressed to the Board during two recent meetings that this “uncoupling” is not going to be easy and is likely to be quite expensive. The complexity of this issue is likely to make agreement between the parties as to what constitutes adequate separation difficult and could also result in the courts having to decide it. It appears the only ones likely to profit, from all of this, are the Town’s outside consultants and the lawyers, if it all ends up in court as now seems probable. At the December 9th meeting I advised the Board of another serious concern with the planned acquisition. If the Town takes over the entire system, there appears to be no plan to ensure an adequate electrical power supply after the present United Power agreement terminates in 2021. About the only reference to this subject is a statement on the Town web page that says, “In the long run … the Town can purchase power

on the open market at the lowest available cost, while United many areas of the Power will be tied to Tri-State Generation and Transmission US, especially in Association Inc.” I noted that the fact that United Power northeastern states, is “tied” to Tri-State as a member owner assures us of an have already tried adequate long term power supply since Tri-State maintains this approach. the construction of a disc golf course. I am looking forward to the challenges this popular sport brings to the Firestone community. This is an activity that has a broad appeal to all age groups, especially our teens and seniors. This project will be done in stages with additional landscaping and improvements throughout several years as the budget allows.  The flood of 2013 made us all aware of the importance of our storm water systems. This year Firestone is planning on improving the culvert near Pine Cone Avenue (CR 20) under Colorado Boulevard to allow water to move more efficiently from the intersection. There are several other projects within our storm water system designed to improve the movement of heavy rain water through our entire community.  As we progress into the New Year please continue your efforts in keeping our community clean and safe. If you want to learn more about how you can get involved in your Firestone community or have suggestions to improve Firestone please email me at psorensen@firestoneco.gov.

into topics that I am getting approached about frequently and what is coming up in my conversations with residents and business owners, whether positive or negative.  Many in the community have been asking me about the fading striping along Colorado Boulevard and elsewhere in the community. Our maintenance plan allows for road striping each area of town every two to three years because these markings are important to our community’s safety. Some of the major roadways, like Colorado Boulevard, were recently completed and another portion will be taken care of next year. Staff has also upgraded the type of paint that will be used from now on to extend the life of these important markings.  I have been hearing compliments for our 10th annual treelighting that took place December 6th. Rest assured that these are passed on to the staff and commission that make this event

possible as well as the sponsors who support it so that we can continue to offer all of our activities free of charge. The Town believes in its responsibility to provide outlets for community gathering and we’re so pleased that so many in our community come to enjoy these events.  The third item I’ve been asked about a lot recently is the closing of Carbon Valley Coffee Roasters café. Don’t despair; you can still buy their fabulous coffee as they have chosen to focus on their successful full-time roasting operation. Look for exciting things to happen to the space that housed their café.  Lastly, I’d like to thank the Moore Farm HOA for inviting me to attend their last meeting. If you would like me to come and meet with your group, I am happy to do so, just email me at tcarey@ frederickco.gov.

improvement projects and new initiatives. In 2015, we will kick-off a community survey and update the City’s long-range development plan. The City has approved an aggressive capital improvement plan and will make a substantial investment in upgrading water lines, roads and drainage facilities throughout the older parts of Dacono. As the economy continues improving, we anticipate additional growth in our community through new housing development.  Our City’s accomplishments over the past year are the result of a collective effort on the part of our elected officials, city employees and the many volunteers who serve on boards and commissions. As a City Council, we value community involvement, transparency in our deliberations, open debate, sometimes

disagreement, but always consensus.  In 2015, I encourage you to become engaged in our local government. Whether it is serving on a board or a commission, running for elected office, or volunteering at one of our community events- your involvement matters. Look for a community calendar of event in the January City Connection newsletter.  I thank each and every one of you for your support in the past and look forward to working with you in the New Year. Best wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Your Mayor, Charles Sigman.

Why Use A Travel Consultant in 2015?

In this age of internet and social media, the travel agent is said to be an endangered species.

A Changing Role

Folks no longer go to travel agents for information alone, as there are countless websites, social platforms, not to mention user review sites. In this context, the travel agent role has changed into that of a consultant and advisor, helping with the decision process and adding value along the way. Here are three ways this can take place:

Bringing health care closer to home

1. SAVE TIME

It may sound strange, but with all the technology available at our finger tips providing all sorts of detailed information, one might think we can sort out a trip in no time. Yet, it was recently found that the average packaged-travel purchase takes place after 38 visits to various websites. While you may find the process fun, there is a growing crowd not interested in wasting time visiting close to 40 sites before deciding upon an upcoming trip. A savvy travel consultant knows where to look and has access to systems allowing her to tap into the latest availability and promotional rates, and will come back to you with 3 or 4 best options to choose from. They usually gets back to you within 1 or 2 days after your request. Time is money, so time saved here can be better used dreaming of your vacation!

2. PEACE OF MIND

You arrive at your destination and find out the hotel you were supposed to stay at is either overbooked or, worse, is still under construction with half the rooms unavailable? From Italian volcanoes to airlines going bankrupt, horror stories abound in the tourism world. A travel advisor can become a lifeline in these cases. Things don’t have to be catastrophic in order to get peace of mind from your travel consultant. When the itinerary becomes more complex, things can get complicated. You want a certain location on a ship (or you don’t know which is best) or traveling with your extended family and want to be located near each other in a resort rather than trying to figure it all out by yourself, a good travel consultant will provide you with solutions ensuring peace of mind. She may have contacts at the resort that will be more than valuable for those special requests.

3. PERSONALIZED ADVICE

A good travel consultant is one that understands your needs and wants, and that can go as far as to anticipate what you’d want from an upcoming travel experience. We have a client wanting a multi-generation vacation in Hawaii. They wanted to have an affordable yet memorable experience, with 25 people travelling, adults and kids ranging from 3 to 76 years old. From our discussions, we understood what they were looking for and made room arrangements ensuring they paid less and were grouped in the same area of the resort through the director of sales (an associate of ours). All these little things add up and contribute to delivering a better overall travel experience. The bottom line is that smart travelers know their time, money and travel dreams are too important to be left floating in cyberspace. And the customer satisfaction that comes with a travel consultant’s hard work, expertise and quality service will never go out of style. Trash Pick-Up Should Be Back on Schedule

If you are a Waste Connections trash customer (blue can) in Frederick and Firestone, you have noticed trash was not picked up last week due to weather. Communications with the district manager stated they are experiencing a delay in pickup and will be working throughout the week to get back on schedule by Saturday, January 3. If you have Christmas trees and other boxes you are welcome to place them out at the curb and they will pick them up with your normal trash at no charge. Thanks for being patient.

Sweet Frederick Awarded DOLA Grant for Godding Hollow Pkwy

The Town of Frederick is excited to announce receiving a grant for $1.28 million from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) to construct improvements and final flood repairs to Godding Hollow Pkwy (CR 18). This arterial road was one of the worst affected by the September 2013 Flood, which washed out a portion of the roadway and the Godding Hollow Creek culvert. The Town will provide a 50% match using funds from the Stormwater, Street & Alley and Open Space funds. The DOLA grant will cover much needed improvements from Colorado Boulevard (CR 13) to the East 1-25 Frontage Road including one through traffic lane in each direction, a continuous dedicated left turn lane, left turn signals at the Colorado Blvd intersection and acceleration/deceleration lanes where required. A continuous sidewalk will also be included where one does not exist for safe pedestrian travel. It will also construct the final repairs to the flood damaged section including upgrading the culverts to current 100-year capacity code standard for improved safety and property protection. The grant was given through the Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Program as the road provides critical east/west connectivity between the East I-25 Frontage Road and Colorado Boulevard and therefore is heavily utilized by energy vehicles. “Your project was reviewed based on a variety of factors such as its connection to energy impact, degree of need, measureable outcomes, amount of request, relationship to community goals, level of local match and community support, management capacity and readiness to go,” wrote Reeves Brown, Executive Director of DOLA, in the letter awarding the grant. “We’re proud to be a partner with Town of Frederick on this important project.” The project will be bid out in January with construction planned for the spring and summer. This project will take around 9-12 months to complete. “We are so grateful to DOLA for realizing our need and awarding us the funds to improve and repair this roadway,” said Mayor Tony Carey. “I know our community will welcome this great step in rebuilding after the flood.”

Trucks, a crane and a lot of workers helped place two large pedestrian bridges in Historic Firestone on Dec. 16 and 17, 2014. The bridges will allow for safe trail access. The first bridge was installed at the south end of the Jacob H. Firestone Memorial Park located near the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Grant Avenue. This area of the trail has a downward slope where water and ice have traditionally collected causing unsafe passage. The second bridge will allow direct access to the trail through the Firestone Villas neighborhood off of Venice Avenue. Both of the bridges will protect health and safety concerns for patrons of the trail, as well as provide a safer route to school for students. The purchase of the two pedestrian bridges was approved by the Board of Trustees in June and was funded through the Parks Impact Fee Fund, which are fees collected from new home permits in Firestone.

Winter Is Best Time to Sell, Study Shows

The housing market doesn’t hibernate in the winter. Sellers who list and buyers who buy often find the winter season the most advantageous time to make a move in real estate. The winter tends to net sellers’ more than their asking price during the months of December, January, February, and March than listings from June through November. Listing during those four winter months has resulted in higher percentages of aboveasking-price sales than listing during any months, other than April and May. Researchers say the winter market is less competitive for sellers since many people tend to wait until the spring to list. The smaller inventory of active listings help sellers get more attention from buyers on their properties. Also, many large corporations often transfer employees or hire new ones early in the year, creating opportunities for winter sellers from very motivated purchasers. Sellers shouldn’t worry about the holidays hampering their chances either. A 2011 study conducted by realtor.com® found that 60 percent of real estate professionals advise their sellers to list a home during the holidays because they believe it’s an opportune time to sell. Nearly 80 percent of the real estate professionals surveyed said that more serious buyers emerge during the holidays, and 61 percent say less competition from other properties makes it an ideal time to sell. As for buyers, they may find winter a good time to make a move too. Sellers often are more flexible about negotiations over prices and terms than they would in the spring. Choosing a Real Estate Agent for Buyers

When you are thinking of buying a home, you have 2 basic choices. One way is to drive around or search the Internet, narrow down the choices and then call each individual Realtor to get further information or to see the house. There is a better way, however. Select one agent to work with and let them do the work! A good Realtor can make the process go smoother, alert you to things you don’t know about, and save you both time and money. Most people do not buy or sell real estate very often, so they don’t know what they don’t know. A good Realtor can help identify areas that you need to look into in a transaction. In Colorado, a Broker usually works with Buyers as either a Buyer’s Broker or a Transaction Broker. The basic difference is a Buyer’s Broker is representing and acting in the best interest of the Buyer and in Transaction Brokerage, the agent is just putting together the deal and not representing either party. In most cases, the Realtor working with the Buyer is being paid by the Seller’s broker, so there is not a cost to the Buyer, so take advantage of their service. So, how should you choose a Realtor to help you buy a home? There are several ways. Get references from people you know that have purchased a home - did they like their Realtor? Who is active in the local market where you want to buy? Has there been an office you have worked with in the past? Once you have come up with a few names, you then need to make a selection. It is best to interview a couple of Realtors before you make a decision. Buying a home may well be one of the largest investments of your life, so taking an hour to talk to a couple people is well worth it. In my experience, most problems that occur between a Buyer and an agent happen due to lack of communication or misunderstanding of each other’s expectations. Following are several questions (not in any particular order), to consider asking of the Realtors you interview: Have you sold homes in the area I want? What sources do you have to locate properties? Do you have lenders or inspectors you can recommend? Do you get paid anything for me using any of these references? What length of Buyer Broker contract do you require? If I feel you are not doing your job, can I cancel the contract? Can you give me references of other Buyers that you have recently helped? When are you available to show me homes? How often will you tell me about new properties just on the market? How will you communicate with me? How much experience do you have, or what support do you have if there are questions you can’t answer? Is there someone to show me homes if you are out of town? Once you make a decision on your Buyer’s Broker, let (and make) them do their job. Don’t call another agent to ask questions or to set up a showing of the property, this is your agent’s job. If you come across a property that your Realtor did not give you, give him or her the address and have them get you the details you want. Sometimes, a property can be on the Internet or have a for sale sign in front, but the Broker did not tell you about it because it is under contract or because it did not meet your requirements. Buying a home, especially your first one, will be exciting, scary, nerveracking, frustrating, thrilling, stressful and fulfilling. It will also be one of the best things you do in your life. Work with someone that will help make it successful. Paint Ideas for Kid’s Rooms

Pink and blue are no longer the standard colors for the nursery. Parents are opting for a variety of colors from stimulating primary reds, blues and medium yellows to neutral greens, grays, taupes and pale yellows. Painting in neutral colors will provide an effortless transition as your child matures and desires a more grown up look in their room. You can still bring in bolder primary colors with an accent wall, painted furniture, bedding and window coverings. Popular with all age groups, chalkboard paint on walls or doors gives younger children the freedom to create and can be kept in the room as your child grows. Stripes are always popular with young ones and their parents. We’ve painted many striped accent walls in nurseries during the last year, both vertical and horizontal. Usually one stripe is the same color as the other walls in the room and the alternating stripe is an accent color or the same color but a few shades up or down in the color spectrum. An alternative is a wide horizontal accent stripe around the room at eye level in a complimentary color. Racing stripes are always popular with younger boys and girls and as they get a little older national sports or their school’s team colors in stripes take over as their favorite. For those parents who are reluctant to paint their kid’s rooms the desired pink and purple, bright green or teenage black and red it has been our experience they’re happy to have their rooms painted back to ‘normal’ sooner than later. Some great ‘gender neutral’ neutrals from Sherwin Williams: Tea Chest 6103, Essential Gray 6002, Recycled Glass 7747, Lemon Meringue 7561, Minted 6735. And some pinks and blues to start your color search, again from Sherwin Williams: Damsel 7576, Rosily 6574, Bella Pink 6596, Impatiens Petal 6582, Alyssum 6589, Honest Blue 6520, Balmy 6512, Dockside Blue 7601, Mild Blue 6533. Carbon Valley Consumer Report...since 1999

The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

FIRESTONE, Colorado – Firestone takes pride in its employees and recently recognized those who have excelled in the areas of leadership and development. For 2014, three employees were recognized by Firestone Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy on Dec. 13, 2014. Each of these employees has demonstrated growth within their own scopes of responsibility. Mark Martinez, the Public Works Foreman, has shown a willingness and ability to take on increased responsibility by adding foreman responsibilities for the water division to those already held for the parks division. Throughout the several years he has been with the Town, Martinez has proven to be dependable, responsible and eager to learn and grow. He is a great example of an employee with a desire to develop both as an individual and as a leader and is recognized for exemplary service. Town Clerk Carissa Medina brings a high level of credibility to her position through her attention to detail and impeccable record keeping. Garnering respect at all levels, Medina’s contribution to the Town is evidenced by a high degree of accountability through conscientious efforts supporting not only the Board of Trustees and Town Manager, but also her fellow co-workers. Her integrity has earned her recognition for exemplary service. Corporal Ray Bueno has established himself as a leader within the police department through his involvement with Critical Intervention Training (CIT). Having satisfied the Firestone Police Department’s goal of certifying every first-line officer in CIT, Bueno has provided training to several other agencies in the area. Bueno has also been the project coordinator for SOTAR, a web-based tracking system that provides the public with information about sex offenders. Bueno currently serves as the lead hostage negotiator with the Weld County Regional SWAT Team. For his efforts, Bueno is recognized for outstanding contribution. Alongside the employee recognitions, Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen presented Bill Meier, the Senior Community Affairs Representative with United Power, with the Firestone Community Member of the Year award for his significant impact in the Carbon Valley community. As a long-term Carbon Valley community member, Meier began with United Power in 1979 and has been instrumental in acting as the community relations liaison between United Power and the Carbon Valley communities. He has continued to work with the Carbon Valley to find unique lighting solutions to improve the safety and quality of life for residents. Through his membership contacts and ongoing relationships, Meier has also taken an active role in many area boards and committees. For the past six years Meier has served on the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, four of which were in the president role. His vision has been to grow the Chamber from a small to larger organization that incorporates bigger companies that are now part of the Firestone and Carbon Valley area. Community partners were also recognized for their significant contributions during 2014. The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District has continued to build a strong uniformed emergency response for the

by Jan Sciacca “Dr. Dan,” wanting to bring his family back to his Colorado roots, purchased Carbon Valley Chiropractic in August 2014. The name of his practice is now Carbon Valley Chiropractic/3 Pillar Fitness. He serves patients, established or new, from the tri-town area, Mead, Longmont and surrounding areas. Many changes have been made to the existing practice. The office has been remodeled into an open and well-decorated relaxing environment. “Our existing client base is thrilled with the changes to the office” said Dr. Dan. “We really opened up the office and created the feeling of a sanctuary where our clients are comfortable.” Dr. Dan has created what is called the “3 Pillar Fitness” The 3 Pillars are Chiropractic, Core Strengthening, and Weight Loss. He says, “The key to overall wellness is losing extra pounds, increasing flexibility, and staying aligned to keep our bodies in harmony” Dr. Dan’s philosophy is different from other chiropractors. His philosophy is to work with the patient to not just minimize pain and discomfort, but to eradicate it, by teaching exercises that strengthen the core and enable the healing process. Dr. Dan treats clients with Himalayan Pink Salt prior to exercise and adjustment to provide crucial trace minerals to enhance the body’s ability to maximize the treatment. He believes this helps provide patients with a path to overall wellness. Patient Dan Clark reports “Dr. Dan has helped me not only relieve back pain but has me doing exercises in the office and at home that keep me on the path to weight loss and a strengthened core!” Dr. Dan wants to emphasize that Carbon Valley Chiropractic doesn’t just do adjustments but provides a path to wellness. He wants to help people set and obtain reachable fitness goals. He loves to help people by seeing them re-engage in activity. To help one on his or her fitness journey, Dr. Dan is offering a first visit special for $19.99. Dr. Dan Knectel was born and raised in Longmont. He attended Longmont High School. In prep school Dr. Dan excelled in wrestling and football and earned a wrestling scholarship to Utah State University. He then attended the Los Angeles School of Chiropractic in California. His first practice was in Bountiful, Utah, where he practiced for many years. He is married to Holly and has six children. He likes to spend his spare time with his family, his church, his community and weight lifting. Dr. Dan also has an assistant, Chris Bowers. Chris provides coaching and tools that provide effective and lasting weight loss. One of the tools the practice offers is the “InBody 370,” which is a body composition analyzer that breaks your total body composition down in terms of muscle, fat, water, etc. The results from this profile aid in goal setting and diet choices. Dr. Dan shares, “Chris is here to use his experience in fitness and nutrition to help our patients achieve weight loss, core strength, and be a coach who provides inspiration!” The CVC/3 Pillar Fitness experience is so encouraging that customers are known to literally hug Dr. Dan and/or Chris before they leave! Days/Hours of operation are Mon 10:00a-6:00p, Tue 12:00p-8:00p, Wed 10:00a-6:00p, Thurs 12:00p-8:00p, Fri-Sat by Appointment. The phone number is 303.833.1500. The address is 630 Main St., Ste. A, Frederick. The website carbonvalleychiropractic. com is being updated. An email contact address is coloroadobowers@gmail.com.

Suggested GOALS for Social Media in 2015

What worked well for your business in 2014? What may need improving? Are you wondering where to focus your marketing efforts in 2015? Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg announced there are about 18 million business pages on Facebook and 1 million are being added every *month*. Broken down that would be around 33,333 pages created every day! You need to be there, but how can you be successful with so much competition? GOAL: GROW THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON YOUR PAGE The emphasis on amassing mega numbers is waning and instead business owners are (finally!) realizing the power of engaging with the right audience. Can you grow your page organically by 3 people each week? How about 10 people per month? This is organic and healthy.

Monday 8am-5pm Tuesday: 9am-6pm Wednesday: 7:30am-4:30pm Thursday: 7:30am-4:30pm Friday: 8am- 3pm

GOAL: INCREASE POSTINGS To significantly boost content production and distribution! A couple posts a week isn’t going to cut it anymore. Why? To gain the attention you need, you’re going to need frequency. Post multiple times each day. Don’t worry – you won’t irritate people. Most people aren’t all day. You want to be in front of them when they are online. GOAL: CREATE CONSISTENT CONTENT You and your business need to create better, more fun, and more valuable content in order to be noticed and to truly benefit from social media. Have a contest or promotion monthly – at minimum. Consumers spend an average of 2 hours, 21 minutes on their mobile devices and are replacing computers and TVs with smartphones and tablets to surf the Web and watch videos. Now that Facebook recently introduced autoplay videos in the News Feed (mobile and desktop), short video content (that is relevant, educational and/ or entertaining!) will be even more crucial for your 2015 marketing strategy! Each quilt has something to say about the times during which it was created . This is sure to enlighten and entertain people of all ages. Jeananne Wright of Longmont is a nationally known certified quilt appraiser and lecturer. She can be reached at 303 772-7684 to make an appointment for a quilt appraisal. This documentation is beneficial for insurance purposes and provides information about the quilt for future generations. Throughout the year Interfaith Quilters serve the community. Many flood victims have received quilts in 2013 and 2014. The Safe Shelter of the St. Vrain Valley also receives quilts and other needed items during the year. Several quilts have been made for the Quilts of Valor organization to give to military service veterans. Interfaith Quilters is comprised of about 100 volunteer quilters. Various degrees of experience are represented here with each person contributing skills, creative ideas, sewing time and camaraderie. The weekly Monday sewing days from 9am til 3pm at the First Lutheran Church allows us time together to share ideas, sewing tips and of course lunch. New members are always welcome. A big congrats to Officer Chad Seat who was nominated for recognition by Youth & Family Connections of Weld County for his work with youth at the Frederick High School! After much thought and deliberation, Rachel is giving her resignation due to her need to scale back the hours that she has worked outside of home in order to spend more time with her daughter and family. Rachel says her time with the Carbon Valley Chamber has been an invaluable learning experience and has enjoyed and appreciated being able to serve in the position for the past year and a half. Rachel’s last day as Executive Director with the chamber will be December 31st. She will continue to work a small amount of hours in business relations after her full time departure and plans to help with the transition to a new Executive Director. Rachel would like to thank the chamber membership and Board of Directors for the opportunity to lead in this capacity over the past year and a half. And she is looking forward to continuing to see everyone in the Carbon Valley community. Judy Zewe, Chamber Administrator, will be continuing to support the business of the Chamber in the chamber office from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in 2015. The Board of Directors will ensure that the Carbon Valley Chamber will continue to progress and grow while we search for a new Executive Director. The new Executive Director position will be posted near the first of the year and membership notified upon selection in early 2015. Please send communication regarding potential candidates to info@ carbonvalleychamber .com. Thank you all for your loyal membership and engagement with the chamber. Sending warm holiday wishes to you and your families.

INTRODUCING 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN

No matter what your child’s age, reading together is the single most important activity that you can do to help your child get ready to read independently. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends reading to children from birth. They explain that children who are read to during infancy and preschool years have better language skills when they start school and are more interested in reading. In addition, parents who spend time reading to their children create nurturing relationships, which is important for a child’s cognitive, language and socialemotional development. Reading to children from birth is also important for expanding background knowledge and encouraging imagination. Since our schools are working to improve reading scores in the state standardized tests, High Plains Library District knows that supporting families in our communities by offering successful early literacy services is critical for children to be ready to start school. Children need to enter school ready to read, and the best way to teach early literacy skills is by instilling a love for stories at the youngest possible age. Children’s author and reading advocate Mem Fox encourages parents to “read at least three stories a day; it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read.”

High Plains Library District is joining hundreds of libraries across the country following the national initiative offered by 1000BooksBeforeKindergarten.org. This is a multi-year reading program designed to help parents of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers read 1,000 books to their children before they enter kindergarten. This program is ideal for parents to track reading and know that every book they read with their child is moving toward his or her future success. It develops a very solid foundation for children to be ready for school while at the same time fosters a love of reading in their household. Although 1,000 books sounds like a huge number, consider this: If you read one book a day, you could finish in less than three years. Ten books per week? Less than two years. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success. For more information about 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, stop by your library in January and register your child. You will receive the first of ten reading logs, a free Unite for Literacy book titled We Love the Library and a backpack to keep. A parent guide is also included with more information. Each reading log tracks 100 books, and as each log is completed, parents or caregivers can return to the library for the next reading log and special recognition for their child. All children who reach the goal of reading 1,000 books will receive a certificate and a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten window-decal to proudly display on a car or home window. Start now to help your child get ready to read with 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. ~Audrey, Farr Regional Library

T’was Weeks Before Christmas And The Welcome Visit From Santa

The Carbon Valley Library partnered with the American Legion Auxiliary to provide a fun day on Saturday, December 6th prior to the Holiday Festivals provided by the Tri-Towns. Santa (AKA Tom Rizzi) arrived right on time at 11 AM accompanied by his team of helpers, Donna Lane, JoAnn Kidd, and Charlene Russell. As each youngster visited with Santa and told them of their Christmas lists, cameras flashed, folks cheered, and at the end of the visit, each was given a treat bag to take home and share. Those waiting to visit were given the opportunity to do some fun crafts and even made pictures and letters to give to Santa. It was exciting to see so many families return that have been a part of this event every year, and in the photos included here, see how the families have grown. In the beginning, it was two little girls in identical dresses that visited, then there were three and then there were four. Now it is four little girls and finally, a brother who seems totally mesmerized. These are memories that will last forever. Over 150 youngsters waited patiently with families to visit with St. Nick. It was such an uplifting day and a great way to start the season. Mark your calendar NOW for next year, (December 5th from 11 AM to 1 PM). Bring those cameras and smiles (or tears as it may be) and enjoy the moment for years to come. Happy New Year! From the American Legion Auxiliary #1985 at 870 1st Street, Firestone, CO 80504.

Aesthetic Flooring & Hard Surfaces

By Robin Barrett Not many businesses can say they “cover it all” but Firestone resident, Silverio Garcia can. And he’s been covering floors in and around the Carbon Valley and Mead areas for ten years. Over those ten years they have grown to include many specialty services including custom tile work and superior concrete surfaces that shine like marble. You have to see it to believe it and you can, in their multifaceted showrooms. Aesthetic Flooring & Hard Surfaces was started in 2004 by Silverio Garcia and his wife. Silverio started his company as a way to help other flooring installers in the area find work. As a result of his kindness to help them, many of his original employees are still working with the company today! The office staff are veterans also. Aleana started with the company in 2007 and Terri started in 2009. Both of these women live close by and have been in flooring for over 10 years. Customers can expect stellar service from this highly trained, very knowledgeable expert staff. Aesthetic Flooring started as an installation company and over time grew to include floor covering products that are on display in the various, large show rooms. Aesthetic Flooring makes sure that the customers are matched up with a product that meets their needs not overselling or directing them in the wrong choice. Silverio says his most memorable experiences include their work with Habitat Humanity. They also had great experiences installing carpet in the FAA control room. But the most recent and very satisfying event , since he and his wife have been in business, is their recent relocation to their new building with better visibility at 4350 Hwy. 66 right off I-25. It’s a very easy drive from Carbon Valley by taking Colorado Blvd north to 66 and west to just before the interstate! The majority of Aesthetic Flooring’s customers have been with them since the inception of the company. Those clients have been so satisfied with the services that they have brought in new customers simply by word of mouth. Aesthetic Flooring continues to donate a generous amount of materials and services to Habitat for Humanity. Aesthetic Flooring services Mead, Fredrick, Firestone, Dacono, Boulder, Greeley, and Loveland…well...the Northern Front Range! They have great references all over the area including new homes in No Name Creek. Plus they’ve done the surface around the pool. “We really want people to know that we are here to serve you. We want to help you choose a product that will be the best for the area you need to cover but will also fit into your budget,” says Aleana. “Our product knowledge is unparalleled to many other flooring companies and we hope to show you that.” Just ask Kelly Martindale. She’s now a very satisfied customer also. Silverio, his wife, along with all of his employees would like to invite everyone to their new facility at 4350 Hwy. 66, Longmont, CO 80504. Come see the expanded showroom along with the quality of flooring. You will quickly experience their honest service and reasonable prices. Their new employee

Firestone Welcomes Two New Officers

The Firestone Police Department welcomed two new members to its team recently as Officer Amanda Alexandres and Officer Curt Bringle joined the force. Prior to joining the department Alexandres spent a year with the Department of Corrections Parole. She was attracted to Firestone for its strong community oriented policing and opportunities to grow within the department. Bringle brings with him just less than three years of experience. Bringle started with the Platteville Police Department in 2012, but was attracted to Firestone for its ongoing professionalism, continued training and advancement opportunities. Bringle enjoys the small town values that the Firestone community has become known for.

TOTALLY Food for the Soul New Year New Things...Welcome 2015 I cannot help but think to all the things that 2014 brought to me, brought to my family, and my church. It is amazing to know how great and gracious God is to us each year! The fact that we do not deserve anything, but God has been more than gracious! 2014 has brought us the news that my wife is pregnant and we are expecting our 3 child, a boy, due in March. We are super excited to add this little guy to our life! We know the Lord has blessed abundantly with this news. Our business we started 4 years ago on January 1 took some great leaps and bounds this last year. As a pastor I currently do not get paid from our church. This is no problem. The Lord has blessed us graciously that I have the FREEDOM, to be able to be a pastor without having to worry about schedule or not being able to do my pastoral duties, because “other” things get in the way. This business has provided me the ability to be a pastor at any time. It also has been a blessing to the church, as they do not have to feel financial stress because of my not getting paid. This has allowed them to be able to place the churches money other great places, which brings me to my next point. In late May of 2014 our church also acquired a building that we can call our own! It is a rental, but it is a permanent location. We get to meet there anytime we want! What a blessing. We get to put out permanent signage on the windows, doors, and the building. No more putting out of signs near the road on the weekends and picking them up late on Sunday night. It is ours! Since June, we have been trying to renovate this building to make it look like well...a church. We are on the final stages of this as we speak! We have already been given the certificate of occupancy and have been meeting there for a few short weeks. We are still trying to make it feel a little more like a home! Don’t mind the dust! With just a few things mentioned, there are still many more things that we are really excited about to tell. Some will be announced here in the next few weeks! In the meantime we would love to invite you to our church. Since the New Year is about new things...we are thankful for the new things… Scripture gives us a similar thought, 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he

The Dacono Neighborhood Health Center, located at 3101 Summit View Drive (east of I-25 at exit 232), opened in October and is accepting new patients. Dr. Bruce Martin heads primary care services at the new neighborhood health center and women’s health services are lead by Dr. Bhavani Chillara. Special features at the Dacono Neighborhood Health Center include: • A “no wait” process that eliminates the waiting room experience altogether. • An “onstage offstage” environment, where physicians and patients enter/exit on different sides of the room. • A variety of comprehensive health services including access to experts in nutrition, mental health and physical activity. • Community classes and educational services geared towards the direct needs of each community. In January 2015, free classes on ‘Goal setting and the New Year’ and ‘Exercise, nutrition and diabetes’ are being offered. Goal setting and the New Year: Exercise, nutrition and diabetes: Thursday, January 8 from 6 pm to 7 pm Tuesday, January 20 from 6 pm to 7 pm Classes are free, but space is limited. To register for a class or to schedule an appointment at the health center, call 303-925-4200. The Dacono and Thornton Neighborhood Health Centers are integrated with the St. Anthony North Health Campus, located at 14300 Orchard Parkway in Westminster (at I-25 and 144th Avenue). The $177 million expansion of the St. Anthony North Health Campus will feature 92 inpatient beds to provide all the services of a traditional community hospital. In addition, the campus will have a large outpatient component that will offer preventative care, specialists and wellness components with a focus on convenience and service. Amenities of the new health campus include drop-in daycare, no wait appointments, unlimited visiting hours, a demonstration kitchen, and wellness classes. The focus on wellness extends to patients and employees. Included in the health campus are walking paths, public art spaces, a healing garden with seating, fountains, fireplaces and areas for gathering and two additional gardens – a community and prayer garden that can be used by patients and staff. The community garden will lease 75 to 80 plots for community members to grow their own vegetables, fruits and herbs. The health campus is hosting a community-wide grand opening celebration on Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 10 am to 1 pm. Open to the public, the grand opening celebration will feature local entertainment including dancers, singers, cooking demonstrations and ice sculptures. How Long Will You Wait?

The holidays have come and gone and now you may be starting to try to get back into a daily routine. You may have noticed that your clothes are fitting tighter and that you are craving foods that you used to not crave. Your body has changed over this holiday season and maybe not for the best. New Year’s resolutions are being made and gym memberships are being purchased. What is going to be different this year than the last years in regards to your exercise and nutrition routine? If you travel down the same path… you will get to the same destination. The same recipe yields the same dish. Look, you have choices to make in life. There are always alternate pathways to take. You have to look at past history and learn what did not work for you and ask yourself why those things were not successful. Maybe you had a gym membership but only went to the gym for 15 minutes three days a week and only walked on the treadmill. Maybe you had a personal trainer and stuck with your program only when with your trainer so the results did not happen for you. Perhaps you started a diet trying to get instant results and never really learned how to eat healthy. In order to truly be successful with anything you do in life, you must put a lot of effort into it. You need to make a plan of action and write down the goals you have set for yourself. Define each goal and write down what it will take to get to each of those goals. Always keep in mind that you are the “driver” on your quest to become healthy. You must choose what is right for you. People in your life will have plenty of opinions and advise that may not be suitable for your plan. If you are serious about making “real” changes for 2015, contact a professional that can help you design a fail proof plan. I offer personal training, nutrition and online training. Invest in your life. We are so busy buying material things such as food, cars, gadgets and other items that sometimes we ignore the need to invest in our health. If you are willing to make a different decision this year, contact me. I will help you clearly define what you need to do to make a permanent change. Stop wasting time and get busy living!! ~Shelly N. Porcaro, NASM-CES, PES, CPT, SFN (303) 594-8325 shelly@justtrifitness.com www.justtrifitness.com.

Winter The cold winter months are typically the time of year when we rest and quietly reflect a bit more in order to conserve our energy for the burst of outward energy that comes in the spring time. In essence, it is a time for storage, and building up our reserves. In Chinese medical theory, this time of year places emphasis on the Water element, which corresponds to the Kidney and Urinary Bladder. The Urinary Bladder is considered the storehouse of emotions, and is one of the longest channels in the body, running from the head, down the back and legs to end at the small toes. Tension and held in emotions can cause congestion along this channel, which can lead to stiffness and pain. The Kidneys are perceived as storing the energetic life force; birth, life and death, or the cycle of transformation. The seat of willpower is situated here, generating ambition and the desire to do something with one’s life. Lack of motivation can reflect an imbalance in the Kidney energy. Both functionally and energetically, the Kidneys act as a complex filter to keep our system in perfect balance. Physically, they filter the blood and keep the blood and body clean. For example, the delicate water and acid-base balance in the body is maintained by the Kidney.

303.833.0310

To help maintain a healthy U r i n a r y B l a d d e r and Kidney this winter, maintain your exercise routine, do not increase the level of activity (save that for spring and summer). Quiet activities such as playing cards and board games, meditation, and slow movement activities such as walking, swimming, yoga and tai qi are best in the winter. Eat cooked, easily digested foods such as soups and stews and root vegetables. Avoid over doing carbohydrates and meats as these cause too much internal heat production (inflammation) in the body. Also, keep warm, especially the lower back, belly and neck! Daisy Lear, MSOM, Dipl.Ac., L.Ac. is located at 1159 Lefthand Drive | Longmont, CO 80501 | 303.587.3557 | Private Practice since 2001. She is the Founder & President of Acupuncture for Veterans and their Families at AVFinfo.org since 2009.

The Faith of Peyton Manning

December 23, 2014 By Michael Ashcraft and Mark Ellis The most important moment in quarterback Peyton Manning’s life was NOT when he surpassed the NFL record of 509 touchdown passes. It wasn’t any of his league-record five MVPs. It wasn’t his Superbowl championship. And it wasn’t being named player of the decade of the 2000s by Fox News and Sports Illustrated. The most emotional and dramatic moment of his life came when the Denver Broncos quarterback accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. “My faith has been number one since I was 13 years old and heard from the pulpit on a Sunday morning in New Orleans a simple question: ‘If you died today, are you one hundred percent sure you’d go to heaven?’” Manning writes in his book “Manning.” “My heart was pounding,” he writes. “The minister invited those who would like that assurance through Jesus Christ to raise their hands, and I did. Then he invited us to come forward, to take a stand, and my heart really started pounding. And from where we sat, it looked like a mile to the front. “But I got up and did it. I committed my life to Christ, and that faith has been the most important to me ever since.” Manning displays his faith on the field more quietly than some other players. “Some players get more vocal about it – the Reggie Whites, for example – and some point to Heaven after scoring a touchdown and praise God after games,” he writes. “I have no problem with that. But I don’t do it and don’t think it makes me any less a Christian. I just want my actions to speak louder than words.” Part of Manning’s “actions” include the Peyback Foundation, which he started to help disadvantaged kids in his home state of Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans in 2005, Manning and his brother Eli, who is a quarterback for the New York Giants, helped pack and deliver potable water and other emergency supplies to the affected. Manning also speaks before groups. “I make it a point when I speak to groups about priorities, and when it’s school kids, I rank those priorities as: faith, family, and education, then football,” Manning writes. “I tell them that as important as football is to me, it can never be higher than fourth. My faith has been number one since I was thirteen years old and accepted Jesus.” While he instills faith in Christ off the field, Manning infuses faith into his team on the gridiron. Known as the ‘Sherriff’ for calling plays from the line of scrimmage instead of the huddle, Manning scans the defense and marshals the offense to exploit any perceived weaknesses. A mastermind quarterback, he jockeys with Tom Brady for the moniker “best.” “I pray every night, sometimes long prayers about a lot of things and a lot of people, but I don’t talk about it or brag about it because that’s between God and me, and I’m no better than anybody else in God’s sight,” Manning writes. “I’ve been blessed— having so little go wrong in my life, and being given so much.” Manning has golden boy good looks, a Python-thick throwing arm and a brilliant football IQ. But he’s also had struggles. A herniated disk in his neck caused him pain for years. After a surgery in 2011 successfully alleviated the pain, a pinched nerve debilitated his throwing arm. During rehab he threw and the ball sputtered clumsily to the ground. Then he re-injured the herniated disk. A second surgery was performed.

Adoption: FLIP THE SCRIPT Nov. 26, 2014 from the Dave Thomas Foundation at www. davethomasfoundation.org/flip-the-script

Our friends Bryan and Angela Tucker are adoption advocates with whom we connected last year during the release of their film Closure. Closure encompasses Angela’s story of getting adopted from foster care and her journey of reconnecting with her birth family. As she recognizes National Adoption Month, Angela is participating in #flipthescript, a campaign supported by The Lost Daughters, a coalition of adult adoptees wanting to speak and be heard. Often, the National Adoption Month conversation solely focuses on celebrating with youth who are united with their forever families, and sharing the sentiment of new parents. Flip the script urges us to also look to the input of adult adoptees; to recognize their journey, celebrate their experiences, and value their voice. The short #flipthescript video highlights 8 women who share their personal experiences of living as adoptees. These women address issues within the community that are not always discussed openly, such as receiving comments like, “Aren’t you lucky…?” and re-identifying with their birth families as adults. Much like articles that advise ‘Things not to say to adoptive parents or children,’ these women explain why some comments are not wellreceived as an adoptee. Their voices open us up to a mature perspective of how adoption affects adoptees throughout their lives, far beyond the finalization day. “Flip the script means… it’s okay to have these feelings [as an adult adoptee].” – Rosita // @mothermade These adult adoptees feel that others in the adoption conversation are sometimes fearful of their voice because living the process has given them complex opinions about the larger topic. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption would like to honor The Lost Daughters for sharing their thoughts and feelings. As a member of the National Adoption Day coalition, we value their stories and input as we also value the celebration of new families formed by foster care adoption. All children deserve a family and a home, so they can grow into strong adults with a voice. Do a You Tube search for Adoptees “Flip The Script” on National Adoption Month.

Manning is an intense competitor who watches game videos three times before the coach shows it to the team. He trains incessantly. But after his surgery he was helpless. If he trained too hard it would risk re-injury. “Sometimes progress was not going backwards,” he told the Washington Post. “It was just a real test of patience unlike anything I had to go through. There was nothing I could do about it.” Manning spent the entire 2011 season sidelined, and in March 2012, the Colts released him. It appeared that his long, successful football career was over. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Manning considered his older brother’s injury. Cooper was an all-state wide receiver with a scholarship to Ole Miss when he suddenly experienced numbness and mysterious atrophying in his right bicep. The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota detected spinal degeneration. The operation was beset with complications and Cooper spent weeks subsequently in a wheel chair. His football days ended abruptly. The memory helped Peyton keep things in perspective. “I just thought, wow, I got almost 20 years out of this neck. Boy, I’m grateful for the time I’ve had,” he told the Post. But the end of his football career was hardly over. The Denver Broncos signed him on March 20, 2012, not without concerns over his recovery. By October, Manning had “silenced his critics,” according to ESPN. In 2013, Manning led the Broncos to the Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks. Despite losing, he made a Super Bowl record of 34 completions. In pre-Super Bowl controversy, S e a h a w k s cornerback Richard Sherman taunted Manning, garnering the antipathy of much of the football public. In the

game, Sherman sprained his ankle and was taken out of play. Manning lost 43-8 in the largest point differential in Super Bowl history. But he held his head high and demonstrated Christian class – he went over to the Seahawk sideline and inquired about Sherman’s ankle. “He was really concerned about my well-being,” said a thunderstruck Sherman, quoted on Bleacher Report. “After a game like that, a guy who’s still classy enough to say ‘How are you doing?’ To show that kind of concern for an opponent shows a lot of humility and class. I could learn so much from him.” The quiet Christian walk is Manning’s trademark. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to go to Him for guidance, and I hope (and pray) I don’t do too many things that displease Him before I get to Heaven myself,” Manning writes. “I believe, too, that life is much better and freer when you’re committed to God in that way. Alice Cooper; ‘My Life is Dedicated to Follow Christ’

It’s been Tweeted, Facebooked and according to this article at www.dcbeacon.com on Dec. 24, 2014, Alice Cooper says he loves God but doesn’t want to become a ‘celebrity’ believer. The father of shock rock whose music and stage antics have outraged parents for more than 30 years told how the fear of hell turned him to God. Alice Cooper, who sang about necrophilia and chopped up baby dolls during his concerts, said that although he continues to record and tour with a theatrical horror-style show, “My life is dedicated to follow Christ.” Although he became a Christian in the 1980s, apart from brief comments in some interviews the 66-year-old singer has always been guarded about his faith – until now. But in a frank interview with a Christian music magazine, he spoke at length publicly for the first time about his love for God and reluctance to become a “Christian celebrity.” A chart-topper with the teen anthem “School’s Out,” Cooper – who legally changed his name from Vince Furnier – has been credited with paving the way for performers such as Marilyn Manson. But he maintains that his act was never political or religious and always had “a sense of humor.” He told HM: The Hard Music Magazine that he was always insulted whenever he was accused of being satanic. Raised in a Christian home, he still believed in God, although he was not committed. That changed when alcoholism threatened his marriage. He and his wife, Sheryl, attended a church with a “hellfire pastor.” Cooper said he became a Christian “initially more

out of the fear of God, rather than the love of God … I did not want to go to hell.” Interviewed for HM’s March/ April issue, Cooper views his faith as “an ongoing thing.” “Being a Christian is something you just progress in. You learn. You go to your Bible studies. You pray,” he said. He has avoided “celebrity Christianity,” because “it’s really easy to focus on Alice Cooper and not on Christ. I’m a rock singer. I’m nothing more than that. I’m not a philosopher. I consider myself low on the totem pole of knowledgeable Christians. So, don’t look for answers from me.” Yet he has been able to speak to others in the music scene about his faith. “I’ve had a couple of people that were friends of mine that I’ve talked to that have vocally said they have [accepted Christ]. I have talked to some big stars about this, some really horrific characters … and you’d be surprised. The ones that you would think are the furthest gone are the ones that are more apt to listen.” Songs on Cooper’s more recent recordings have hinted at his change of heart. He sees his stage persona now as “the prophet of doom,” telling people: “‘Be careful! Satan is not a myth. Don’t sit around pretending like Satan is just a joke.’ I think my job is to warn about Satan.” He no longer performs some of his older repertoire. Any song promoting promiscuous sex and drinking “gets the axe,” he said. “I’m very careful about what the lyrics are. I tried

Page 25

to write songs that were equally as good, only with a better message.” Cooper told HM he answers his critics: “‘I was one thing at one time, and I’m something new. I’m a new creature now. Don’t judge Alice by what he used to be. Praise God for what I am now.’”

Richard “Dick” Martindale

March 29, 1927 to December 9, 2014

With his children, Mike and Lori, at his side, Dick Martindale Left this life bound for heaven by the amazing grace of God. For 87 years he graced this earth with his sweet, kind, optimistic spirit. While we miss him, we know that he celebrated Christmas with Marian, the like of which they could never imagine here on earth. Dick was born on March 29, 1927 in Longmont to Earl and Odessa Irene Logan Martindale. He grew up in Longmont graduating from Longmont High in 1945. Dick entered the U.S. Marine Corp following high school. After returning to Longmont he joined the local Ford dealership. There he worked as a painter for their auto repair business. Over the years, he also painted vehicles, tractors and equipment that can be seen at the Dougherty Museum just south of Longmont on Hwy. 287. Dick worked for various contractors at Rocky Flats for 35 years, retiring in 1991. His skills had him oversee quality control for the manufacturing line. Dick married Marian Wagner on June 22, 1947, in Longmont. Marian died in 1986, a few days before their 40th Anniversary. Dick built a house on Fleetwood Ave. He was the first owner and lived there to his last breath. It was there he raised his family. Dick was a 32nd Degree Mason. He enjoyed his family’s camping and fishing trips for many years. He spent countless hours in his beautiful backyard, growing both vegetables and flowers. He especially loved roses. When you see a rose and think of Dick in times to come, think of how he brightened your lives. Think of the life he has today and smile. Breathe in deep the fragrance of life, and let that sweetness chase your grief away.
