Creating Community By Connecting Neighbors “A man’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way?” Pr 20: 24
Oldest Congregation in Tri-Towns Celebrates 95 Years & Expansion
Compiled by Jan Sciacca
N
ew Horizons Christian Church, the oldest congregation in Tri-towns, is celebrating its 95th anniversary by expanding. Currently, internal modifications are being made to the “new” building. but if all goes as planned, the church will be opening its doors at a new location at 701 Carbondale Drive in Dacono in mid-May. The church’s 530 Cherry Street location in Dacono, where it’s served the community for the past 43 years, will serve as the New Horizons Christian Church Student Center for children’s services and classes until a buyer is found for that building. New Horizons Christian Church, which has been led by Pastor Rob Thomas since 2002, declares, “This new location will help us to reach and serve even more people in the Tri-towns area. The building that formerly functioned as a restaurant, dance hall and VFW will now be a center of worship to
bring the community together.” New Horizons Christian Church was originated and founded in 1920 by Reverend A.J. Findley, then the minister of First Christian Church of Longmont. The congregation was called Frederick Community Christian Church, and was the first church in the Tri-Towns area. The church was a welcomed addition to the community, who rallied to make it a reality. Mrs. Edythe Leyda and the residents of Frederick presented the congregation with property at 4th and Walnut. On the day that the building was constructed, all businesses closed and men from the surrounding communities gathered to help. The women prepared and served food for all the helpers. With the help of the whole community, in just one day, by the time the sun went down, the building was ready for services. 65 people were present and became charter members at the first service. The dedication was held later that fall and was
conducted by Reverend Davis of Denver. On January 14, 1971, the building was destroyed from a fire caused by a faulty heater. Before the fire was extinguished, both Father John Walsh of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and the Tri-Town Lions Club offered the use of their buildings for services. It was decided that services would be held in the Lion’s Club until the church was able to provide for a new facility. In October of 1971, the Church Board agreed to purchase a 30’ x 90’ barracks building from A-1 Movers in Denver. The building had once been an Army barracks in Fitzsimmons Army Base. The building didn’t conform to Frederick building codes, so it was not able to be placed on the existing church property. Clem DuFour, the Mayor of Dacono, under the cities’ direction, offered a clear deed to the property, now known as 530 Cherry Street. The price settled on was $1. The building was moved onto the site and placed on a basement foundation on February
17, 1972. Volunteer labor ensued and Easter services were held in the “new” building. Upon moving to Dacono, the church changed its name to Village Christian Church, but was later changed to what it remains today: New Horizons Christian Church. The most recent name change occurred when Rob Thomas, with his wife Jackie and their daughters, came to pastor the church. The name of the church, “New Horizons,” fully expresses the mission of the church and its people: its desire is to be a church for people seeking new beginnings that bring them to “New Horizons.” Sunday Worship Services are at 9:45 a.m. Children’s Church and Nursery are available. Family Night is on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. New Horizons Christian Church also hosts the Weld County Food Bank food distribution at 9 a.m. on Thursdays. For more information about other ministry programs, contact New Horizons Christian Church at 303.833.3013 or by email at smsrt@msn.com.

have two children and three grandchildren who keep me lovingly bound to this earth and this time. But I also have two children who died in 1990 and 2002 who draw me heavenward, missing them so deeply that sometimes I wish I were there at that moment. Yes, I still miss them, shed tears on special days like their birthdays and wonder what life would be like if they had not died. Some days I am so pulled, so stretched between Heaven and Earth that it is physically painful. Yet, I remain here in Colorado, living and working in Frederick, in my home of twenty years now. And I am happy for the most part, usually joyful, mostly content, and always thankful for my family, my home, friends, and neighbors. To be truthful, I never thought my life would be this good. Good? Why? How is this considered good? Please, hear me out. Even before my children died and before any of them were born, violence and tragedy visited almost daily. From my earliest memories, my parents fought violently with each other. I lived in constant fear. I wasn’t afraid for my life but you know that fear you get, when, in the darkness of the early morning hours, you hear something. You cannot place the sound and you think someone is in your house. Or out camping in a tent and the moon is new and it’s black and quiet and a twig snaps and a moment later,

Regarding Frederick Power/Electricity Letter to the Editor:
T
his letter is to provide another update regarding Frederick’s expressed intent to acquire the New Town electrical system from the United Power cooperative. The effort to establish an agreed-to initial cost for the acquisition continues. As noted in my February update, United Power expected minor changes to be found during the review and configuration for valuation of the New Town system inventory that was previously turned over to the Town. Such changes, which were confirmed to be minor, were provided to the Town at the end of February. However, as a result of recent information provided by the Town regarding Town boundaries, it appears there may be some annexed areas of which United Power was not aware. United Power is working with the Town to sort this out to determine if additional equipment inventory will be required. Additionally, the Town still has not determined the distribution system for the New Town electrical loads when they take it over. As noted before, United Power must agree that the distribution configuration planned adequately separates the part of the system the Town is taking over from the remaining United Power system for safety and reliability reasons. Whatever configuration
is agreed to may also affect the equipment inventory. Sounds like the Town’s consultants may have found permanent employment; wouldn’t be so bad if we weren’t paying for it. I would also like to comment on a letter regarding Smart Meters which appeared below my last update in the CVCR. The issue is not relevant to the proposed electrical system acquisition since both the Town and United Power use Smart Meters. And, although I have not had the opportunity to thoroughly research the concerns raised by the letter writer, I would note what the American Cancer Society has to say about Smart Meters at http://www.cancer. org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/ athome/smart-meters. I quote, “It would be nearly impossible to conduct a study to prove or disprove a link between living in a house with smart meters and cancer because people have so many sources of exposure to RF and the level of exposure from this source is so small. Because, the amount of RF radiation you could be exposed to from a smart meter is much less than what you could be exposed to from a cell phone, it is very unlikely that living in a house with a smart meter increases risk of cancer. The World Health Organization has promised to conduct a formal assessment of the risks from RF exposure but this report is not yet available”. Carl Brady, Frederick

Town of Frederick Announces Utility Rate Changes
A
t the board meeting on Tuesday night, the Board of Trustees voted to lower Frederick Power & Light’s residential kilowatts per hour (kWh) rate from $0.11064/kWh to $0.106/ kWh effective May 1, 2015. The base rate will remain at $14.40 as that fee covers the fixed cost of street lighting and maintenance of the electric system. This decrease means the average residential Frederick Power & Light household will save $90 annually, making Frederick Power & Light’s rate less expensive than competitors in the area, including COOPs and investor-owned utilities. “We’ve saved money with our new operations and maintenance provider, and will be saving money with a new more efficient way of meter reading so we want to pass those savings onto our residents,” said Kent Van Dyne, Frederick Power & Light Utility Manager. “We are also working on a rebate program to promote energy efficiency that will result in even more savings to the customers who choose to participate.” The Board of Trustees also voted last night to increase water rates for the Town of Frederick in order to meet the current and future needs of the Town’s water system effective May 1, 2015. The base rate, which covers costs including the fixed costs of maintaining the system, the fee we pay to Central Weld County Water District for providing water as well as the first 3,000 gallons of water used, will increase from
$25.80 to $30.65. In addition, the cost of water used will increase anywhere from $0.48 to $1.20 per each additional 1,000 gallons, depending on how much water the customer uses. The less water the customer uses, the smaller the increase. For example, the total bill of an average use of 4,000 gallons will be $32.73 ($30.65 base rate + $2.08 per additional 1,000 gallons), a $5.33 total increase. In addition, a 5% increase was approved for the per 1,000 gallon usage rate each year until 2020. This increase will cover variable costs including line extensions, new services and new water projects such as the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), which are necessary for Frederick’s future water supply. This increase will not affect any Frederick residents living west of I-25 as water is provided to those households by Left Hand Water District. Even with this increase, Frederick is well within the average water rates for the area, as many providers have already enacted increases in order to account for the continuously rising costs of water in Colorado. “The strong demand for limited water supplies has dramatically driven increases in the cost of water which leads to the need for water rate increases,” said Dick Leffler, Frederick’s Director of Engineering and resident water expert. “Frederick, like many water providers in the region, is faced with securing a dependable water supply that will serve the Town during extended droughts, prepare us to respond to potential impacts of climate change, and meet growing demands in the future.”

The City of Dacono will be kicking off the Comprehensive Plan update in the next month. The steering committee will begin reviewing proposals and select a consultant this month. The plan
FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN
April marks the beginning of my eighth year of serving the Firestone community as a Trustee, Mayor Pro-tem and now Mayor. I thoroughly enjoy advocating for Firestone’s best interests. I realize Paul Sorensen how vital it is for our residents to stay informed about local, state and national issues which help shape the plan for our community’s future. Here’s a snapshot of some of the happenings going on in Firestone: In March, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the annual National League of Cities conference.
FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY
Tony Carey
Each month, I’ll give you some insight into topics that I am getting approached about
is intended to serve as a policy document for future growth and development in the City. We are very excited about an I-25 and SH52market study focusing on economic development opportunities along this critical corridor as part of the Comprehensive Plan update. April 13 is the deadline for the City’s annual college/ vocational scholarship program. High school seniors residing in Dacono and planning to pursue college or vocational education are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applications are available on the City’s website. Planning is underway for the annual Carbon Valley Music and Spirits Festival. The music line-up is being finalized and we are working to bring the area’s best spirit vendors. The Festival is held the first Saturday in August.
Finally, it’s Spring clean-out time! This is a great opportunity to get rid of the large bulk items normally not accepted by the regular refuse collection. Dacono residents can pick-up a voucher from City Hall for the City’s annual clean-out day at the Front Range landfill beginning May 1. Details and information at www. cityofdacono.com Enjoy the sunshine! Your Mayor, Charles Sigman
Through a variety of meetings and networking opportunities the conference was very informative and beneficial. With Firestone’s interest at the core, we discussed issues pertaining to water, protecting municipal bonds, broadband legislation and, most importantly, the financial commitment from Washington, D.C. for our failing transportation network. I was encouraged by the feedback we received on the key issues that represent the best interests of Colorado and Firestone. We also had an exhilarating meeting with both of our Senators and their staff during the trip. Alongside me at the conference was our Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy who continues to be a strong negotiator and advocate for our community. Firestone’s residents, the Board of Trustees and our staff are extremely blessed to have the many talents of Wes’ leadership. It is with great pride that I would like to congratulate him on being chosen by his peers to serve on the Colorado City and County Management Association, which is a state-wide association of local government managers and assistants. Having Firestone represented on this dynamic group of leaders demonstrates Wes’ commitment to his profession and our community.
In recent years, the Firestone Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Trustees have reviewed and approved several multi-family developments for our community to diversify our housing options. The Town was recently notified by one of the developers that they anticipate beginning on their project this spring. During some of our late winter snow falls, our Public Works department was able to tackle some snow routes in a more effect manner due to additional trucks added to the fleet. The additional funding for this equipment was made possible through our sales tax increase approved by voters in November 2013. The new equipment allowed for secondary snow routes to be addressed in a timely manner. As we begin to enjoy our warmer days and longer nights, remember to keep a close eye on our Town website at www. firestoneco.gov and our social media outlets so you don’t miss any of the fun events coming up. I also invite you attend an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting to stay informed. As always, if you have a question or concern, please contact me directly at psorensen@ firestoneco.gov.
frequently and what is coming up in my conversations with residents and business owners, whether positive or negative. Here’s what’s trending in Frederick this month. As you may have seen, the Board voted to increase water rates and decrease electric rates in March. The electric rate decrease is due to savings Frederick Power & Light has seen since switching operations and maintenance providers. The water rate increase is due to the ever-increasing price of rural water in Northern Colorado which has tripled in recent years. You can find out more information about what these changes mean for you on the town’s website, www. frederickco.gov. We had another year of successfully handing out free tree vouchers to the first 50 Frederick residents in line on March 7th.
This is one of the town’s most popular programs, and we always hear from residents who take part in this program what a benefit it is to them to have the financial help to buy a higher caliber tree. We think this program benefits the entire community because adding more trees helps us all. As a recently named recipient of the title Tree City USA, look for more trees around your community very soon. I will be at two HOA meetings in April so far, and if you would like me to come and meet with your group, I am happy to do so, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov. Whether you’re traveling or staying home to relax, have a safe and enjoyable spring break!

scratch. In Chicago he worked a high volume group health insurance agency that averaged 35 new clients a day. Jim’s wife Cheri, who co-owns the firm with him, is an integral part of Long’s Insurance. Jim brags that Cheri is the most detailed because of her 30 years of working for the government and her 12 years of working “details” in insurance. Terri Hauk is a team member who fits the Long’s Insurance model. She is a commercial insurance agent with over 25 years’ experience who is customer focused and believes that the client relationship is important, as well as having the right coverages. Local resident Deanna Bixler works as Cheri’s assistant and is in charge of customer relations. She handles ads, the website, greeting cards to clients, social, administrative and good will. Jim Long is 70 years young and has been active in his community all of his life. In his earlier years he was both an Eagle Scout and a member of Order of Arrow, which is an Honor Society for Boy Scouts. He served with the March of Dimes for 40 years, starting at the age of 12. Jim has been a Mason for 43 years and is a member of El Jebel Shrine. He achieved Shriner by journeying through the York and Scottish Rites and served as Potentate in 2012. Locally, he’s served as Vice Chairmen of the Miner’s Day Celebration and is currently Vice President of the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce. For those of you in the community who know Jim Long best, I wonder if you’ll be surprised to learn that he was a rock-n-roll DJ for 35 years and is skilled at impersonations. He left that field when it became apparent “it was a young man’s game.” He’s also a skilled (but retired) Hot Air Balloon Pilot. Jim Long knows how to live, work and play. It’s apparent that he knows what is important to him . . . helping protect you and building a lasting relationship in the process. Long’s Insurance is located at 7800 Miller Drive, Unit C, Frederick. Their contact information is 720.684.6012 and their website is longsinsurance.com.
Cimarron St.
he I-25 Corridor Communities are full of hard-working, colorful characters but there are few in the private sector who work so hard to protect us from the catastrophes of life and from our own ignorance as to what type of insurance coverage we truly need than Jim Long, co-owner of Long’s Insurance Company. I refer to our lack of knowledge on what we really need because I experienced it in a business I was involved in a couple of decades ago. My agent at the time didn’t really know what our high tech business fell under for insurance purposes. When no classification seemed to fit exactly, he guessed at the closest thing, which in my mind wasn’t close at all. I wish I would have known Jim Long then. One wants to be with someone who understands your risk and knows how to write a policy that covers your risks. As an insurance broker, Jim works for you and me, and not the insurance companies. He is licensed in more than 38 states. He and his team represent nearly 100 years of experience under his enterprise’s roof in Frederick. Before preparing a final quote for you, he researches your website and your “exposure,” which means your potential for loss or accident. After a loss, he’ll do market research to make sure the settlement you receive is in line with the area you live in. For example a totaled car is worth a different amount depending on if was totaled in Boulder County or in Denver. Jim sums it up this way, “What do you have to lose?” He then adds, “Insurance is not a commodity or a price.” To be properly insured, there’s more involved than a 1-800 call and price quote. Long’s Insurance deals with 150 insurance carriers and can handle the most common or the most unique insurance request. He insures families and small business owners, aerospace contractors and everything in-between. In addition to coverage for Life, Home, Auto, Health, Disability, Worker’s Comp, Liability, Property, Bonds, Business, Dental and Contractor insurance, Jim is experience in the many class codes that didn’t exist five years ago. There’s now insurance for cyber coverage and firewalls, micro-breweries, tasting rooms, liquor liability and protection from frivolous lawsuits. 1 in 4 businesses will close after experiencing a disaster because an improperly written insurance policy left them financially strapped. Jim describes himself these days as striving for “relationship-based business” and not “transaction- based business.’ He loves what he does and he loves the people he does it for. When asked what some of his most memorable experiences were, he paused, almost as though he was reliving that exact experience, and said “delivering a benefit check to someone who lost a loved one.” Long’s Insurance is the third agency Jim’s started from

he Brew at Déjà lu is now The Brew Crêperie and Coffee Shop. The new logo reflects their focus on delicious sweet and savory crêpes and other food as well as their outstanding locally-roasted coffee. For those in the Tri-Town area, their Firestone business will continue to operate the new and used bookstore. The Brew is located on Colorado Boulevard next to Dairy Queen in Firestone. The Brew Crêperie and Coffee Shop is excited to announce their second location opening soon in Longmont. Like their Firestone location, they will be hosting painting classes, princess events and princess tea parties in Longmont as well. Look for information about their sing along with the Merry Nanny event around Mother’s Day. Adam Parker, co-owner of The Brew with his wife Jodi, is hard at work as the General Contractor getting things refurbished in the long-neglected and vacant space. Their new location is on Main Street in the heart of historic downtown Longmont. C
arbon Valley Rotary provided dictionaries to over 500 3rd grade students in the Dacono, Frederick and Firestone area as a part of their “Literacy For Youth” club focus. Each 3rd grade classroom was visited by the Rotarians to personally hand out the books. Third grade is the level where students go from learning to read to reading to learn. The dictionaries were purchased by the Rotary club with proceeds from their Bingo fundraisers. Carbon Valley Academy Celebrates 10 Years
O
n Saturday, March 14, 2015 Carbon Valley Academy celebrated 10 years of educating children in the Tri-town area by having a 10th Anniversary Fundraising Gala at the D-Barn in Longmont, raising a breathtaking $25,000. The evening started with parents and friends of CVA enjoying a catered meal from Bay Window Catering of Longmont. As the evening progressed, attendees participated in a Silent auction and then a Live auction conducted by the wonderful Don Martin of Martin Auctioneering. Much time and tireless effort was put forth by countless volunteers who organized, donated and assembled classroom baskets and beautiful children’s projects that were offered as auction items throughout the evening. Many guests participated generously throughout the night, enjoying food, drink and conversation. The 10th Anniversary Gala gave us an opportunity to recognize 3 generations of the Davis/Nelson family for their unsurmountable amount of hours volunteering throughout the years. Grandmother, Sandra Nelson, has run CVA’s library for 8 year. She spends hours and hours cataloging, ordering, repairing and conducting library classes for each class weekly. JaNean and Mike Davis have 6 children, 4 of which are currently attending C VA, and 2 have graduated. JaNean has served on many committees, but more importantly as a pivotal member of Carbon Valley Academy’s Board of Directors, currently serving as the Board’s Vice President and Treasurer. Last but not least, Miss
Hannah Davis was not only a student from Kindergarten till she graduated 8th grade last year, she spends her Saturday’s helping at our Bingo sessions in Aurora with JaNean, and also works in our After School Homework Club. Carbon Valley Academy would not be as successful as it is if not for the generous efforts of the Davis/Nelson family.
Carbon Valley Academy would like to extend our gratitude to the many volunteers, sponsors, and vendors that made our 10th Anniversary Gala such a huge success. For more information about Carbon Valley Academy, visit our website at: www. carbonvalleyacademy.org.
Attendees (above & below) at the 10th Anniversary Gala Celebration for Carbon Valley Academy enjoy each other’s company along with great food and prizes.

These are some of the reasons that homeownership is called the “American Dream”. Taking the big step from renting to owning can be a difficult one, but with planning and patience, it can become a reality. Does Homeownership Matter?
ou bet it does! At the most basic level, it provides shelter and security to families. But, there is a lot more to it than that, and here are some facts about homeowners from the National Association of Realtors, Federal Reserve Board, and the US Census Bureau: - They are more likely to vote, - They volunteer their time more frequently for charitable causes, - They move less often, providing more neighborhood stability, - The decision to stay in school by teenage students is higher for those raised by homeowning parents, - Daughters of homeowners have a much lower incidence of teenage pregnancy, - The median net worth of homeowners it 45.9 times that of a renter’s ($234,200 vs. $5,100), - Owner occupied housing is better maintained than non-owner occupied property, - In addition to being more satisfied with their

Help Turn Carbon Valley into a SolarCITY!
T
here are a lot of reasons families choose to go Solar with SolarCity! What makes the decision easiest is that it is $0 money down and the installation is free! After the solar panels are installed, our customers simply pay their utility bill to SolarCity instead of paying United Power. Customers will still receive a bill from United Power but it will only be for the $13.00 Facility Charge. The monthly payments going to SolarCity will be going towards paying off the solar panels. Furthermore, the government is also giving out a Solar Investment Tax credit which is equal to 30% of the total system cost. Finally, United Power is providing a Solar Rebate with a maximum of $1800.00 as long as the customer has the system inspected by United Power by June 1st, 2015. What this means is that Carbon Valley customers need to jump towards this solar movement before that rebate from United Power drops down to $1000.00 maximum on June 1st, 2015. If you earn a rebate of $1800.00, that could pay your electric bill with SolarCity for a year in most situations.

This is HUGE!
So, how do we spread the good word? Let me tell you about our Ambassador Program. The SolarCity Ambassador Program gives you the opportunity to make a difference in our world and build your own business in the process. For every referral you send my way, you’ll earn $250.00 upon installation. If your referral refers another family, they will earn $250.00 and you will earn an additional $100.00. Finally, if that referral refers another family, they earn $250.00, your referral earns $100.00 and you earn $50.00. But what about something special for all these families that are making the decision to go solar? I am pleased to announce our One Month On Us offer. All NEW referrals will have their FIRST month paid for by SolarCity (up to $599.00.) Please consider giving me a call to set up a consultation. I would love to sit down with you and explain how SolarCity can help you in reducing your utility bills while simultaneously helping the environment by simply producing CLEAN POWER. I look forward to hearing from you.

Paint Your Home to Sell
I
f you’re thinking about putting your home on the market, it is now time to start sprucing it up. The first impression any potential buyer will have is outside so as you drive up give your house a little critique. Is your landscaping in good order, grass and flower beds weeded, trees and shrubs trimmed? Your home’s exterior is part of the landscape as well. Check your trim, along with gutters, fascia and soffit to make they are in good shape along with the body of your home. Check your siding, particularly at the bottom to make sure there is no warping evident from this winter’s moisture. Your painter will be able to help you decide whether it’s more cost effective to replace or repair. Your painter can also attach loose trim and woodwork, check for nail pops and remove and replace caulk. The front porch and entry, including the walkway is the next stop for the buyer. Doors and handrails take the most abuse. Handrails sometimes just need a fresh coat on the top. The front door and the trim around it looks best with a new coat of paint. As you step into the foyer what do you first see? More than likely this is what home buyers will notice as well. It is essential that the entry and the room/s it opens into look fresh and appealing. A neutral paint color can do a world of good here. Other rooms painted in bold or brash colors will need to be toned down. A new coat of paint on the ceiling will brighten any room. Trim is often overlooked until it is painted, which is when you don’t realize how much it needed it. The most requested areas we paint for pre-sale are living rooms, kitchens, baths and bedrooms, but if the whole house needs painting, it must be done. Professional painting is one of the least expensive improvements to make to your home at any time.

St. Brigit Offers Full Array Of Holy Week Services
S
t. Brigit Episcopal Church will offer a full array of Holy Week Services, including some services that may be unfamiliar to readers. Reverend Felicia SmithGraybeal, Pastor of St. Brigit’s, highly recommends attending all the services in order to fully experience Holy Week. “Each service is unique, and they build on one another as we walk with Jesus from Palm Sunday to Easter,” said Reverend SmithGraybeal. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, with a service that tells of Jesus entering Jerusalem with a hero’s welcome. This event is commemorated by the congregation walking in procession around the church grounds.
Then, on Maundy Thursday, the story continues with the Last Supper and Jesus washing his disciples feet. Once again, the congregation will have an opportunity to participate by washing each other’s feet. On Good Friday, there will be two services, the Stations of the Cross and a Tenebrae service. The Tenebrae service is a dramatic reading of the crucifixion story interspersed with reflections on how the story applies to contemporary life. Then, on Holy Saturday, St. Brigit will celebrate the Easter Vigil, the joyous first service of Easter. This service is rich with symbolism. It begins in darkness reminiscent of Good Friday and gradually moves into the light of Easter. Key scriptures of the Christian faith will be acted out by members of the congregation, including children. The stories always are entertaining and often humorous. Finally, on Easter Day, Holy Week
culminates with a festive family service, featuring special music, balloons and an Easter Egg hunt. Children are welcome at all services. Child care will be provided for small children. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Please visit www.stbrigit.org or www.Facebook/StBrigit for more information. KK’s Skin Arts . . .Spoil Yourself in Luxury By Jan Sciacca
K
aren Kress is a memorable woman. Her tag line is “I Love Your Face!” She has had a dream to bring quality spa and advanced services to Carbon Valley for a long time. Being a mom, she had put her dream on hold until it was convenient for her family but now the time has finally come! Her business KK’s Skin Arts is open and ready to “spoil you.” Karen has a relaxing, fully equipped, treatment room in her home that is ready for new clients. She offers many wonderful skin care treatments such as customized facials, face and body waxing, eyelash/ brow tinting, makeup application/instruction, PLUS advanced services such as Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels and B o d y Wraps. As much as her services are about looking good, her goal is to train her client’s skin to act as young and healthy as can be, so it stays that way. Karen says, “Our face is the accessory that we are always wearing and the healthier your skin is, the less work you have to do to keep it looking that way.” The dry Colorado sun is hard on skin and we need to be attentive to helpful options. For her deluxe services, she uses the Lira Clinical cosmeceutical line. Lira uses the science of peptides, plant stem cells and other amazing ingredients to dramatically improve the health and behavior of one’s skin. The entire line is paraben and sulfidefree and can only be purchased through a licensed professional Karen or at a partnering spa or salon. In addition to visiting Karen’s treatment room, she offers parties from 2-6 pm at your location. Details can be found at kksarts. com. She’s also marketing her services through area salons as well. Let your salon know she is available. During Karen’s internship, she was one of the most requested technicians. Clients were impressed with her techniques and attentiveness, as well as her encouragement. Karen shares, “I am sure I could work in a gorgeous Longmont spa but I want to bring the services like Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels closer to us. If anyone else is performing these services in Carbon Valley, I haven’t been able to find them.” She added, “It adds 30 minutes to an hour to the whole event to drive to Longmont and that can be
discouraging. It defeats the purpose of relaxing when you have to fight the traffic home.” As she becomes established, her new goal is to commit to a store front. For Karen, it is immensely satisfying to work on someone’s face and know that you changed more than just the face. Whether it’s because they got to relax, they have never felt such soft skin or they look younger from the nonsurgical facelift they just got, there is always a happier person when they leave. In fact, a recently divorced woman came in for some work and talked to Karen about how she needed to date again and what the woman wanted to accomplish. She complained about her face looking puffy all the time. An esthetician isn’t just for relaxing b e a u t y treatments but also knows the science behind “skin.” A f t e r performing manual l y m p h drainage on this client, the client could h a r d l y believe w h a t happened to her face. Karen reports, “The woman felt great and was exuberant when she left me.” Karen has one son at Frederick HS. Her favorite hobby is Karaoke, which you will find her and her husband doing on Saturday nights at Parrott’s Sports Grill with Scooteroke. She will definitely take your requests if you come find her! Karen is also active in the community. She is a member of the Frederick Art Commission and enjoys being involved in many community events. You may see her at several subdivisions during the neighborhood BBQ tour! There are some deep discounts for a few of Karen’s favorite products. She markets these in her monthly Fresh Face Club. The club gives you a variety of services and products that stimulate and beautify your skin. This is an economical way to feed your skin, while trying a variety of treatments! KK’s offers outstanding promotions! Every new customer receives 50% OFF their first appointment. Another especially offer gives you 50% off the next appointment for a Yelp or Google 5-star Review! KK’s Skin Art is located at 5326 Bobcat Street, Frederick and is open Tuesday Friday, 10am - 6pm; Saturdays 9-1 and by appointment. Book online 24/7 at kksarts. com. Visa and MC are accepted. KK’s email is kksars@gmail.com or call 970.412.5972.

Benefits Of Using A Foam Roller On Tight Muscles
F
oam Rolling is also known as self-myofascial release to help ease muscle (fascia) tightness or trigger points. This is done by applying pressure to specific spots on your body where you assist in returning your muscles to as normal function as possible. Trigger points are knows as knots that form in muscles, and you’ll know you have them because they will refer pain. Pain referral can be described as the pain felt when pressure is applied to one area of the body, but the pain is radiated or felt in another. An example of a trigger point is felt while foam rolling your iliotibial (IT) band, as it can cause pain to radiate down your leg to the ankle and up to your hip. You will most likely experience some discomfort or pain when foam rolling and working on your sore muscles. Try to think
of it like the pain you get when you’re stretching. It should be uncomfortable, yet not unbearable. The key to pain management with foam rolling is to modify the pressure you apply of your own body weight on the sore muscle. Foam rolling can be done daily for around 5-10 minutes and at any time. The two most common times to foam roll are right before you exercise to increase mobility and blood flow, and right after you exercise to help loosen up the knots and push out the toxins from the muscles. Everyone can and should foam roll. The following is a list of population groups that would benefit the most from foam rolling: those over the age of 50, people who exercise regularly, those that are sedentary or sit at a desk all day, and those looking to improve their physical performance. When you’ve done the foam rolling technique consistently over time, your muscles will feel better, you’ll gain flexibility, balance, and they can return

D
id you know that the ideal length of a Facebook post is less than 40 characters? Forty characters is not much at all. (The sentence I just wrote is 35 characters.) 40 is the magic number that Jeff Bullas found was most effective in his study of retail brands on Facebook. He measured engagement of posts, defined by “like” rate and comment rate, and the ultra-short 40-character posts received 86% higher engagement than others. What about Tweets? Creativity loves constraints and simplicity is at our core. Tweets are limited to 140 characters so they can be consumed easily anywhere, even via mobile text messages. There’s no magical length for a Tweet, but a recent report by Buddy Media revealed that Tweets shorter than 100 characters get a 17% higher engagement rate. Brevity is a great charm of eloquence. --Marcus Tullius Cicero

esidents of the Towns of Firestone and Frederick can rest easy knowing that the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District is putting their tax dollars to good use. Recent Emergency Medical Services purchases will help the District improve their procedures when it comes to emergency medical care. “We are always trying to improve procedures and are never satisfied with the status quo,” says Doug Prunk, Division Chief of Life Safety for the Frederick-Firestone F.P.D. “This equipment is the next step to advance our patient care and capabilities.” Having access to Advanced Life Support (ALS) personnel and equipment is crucial for the District. That is why the purchase of King Vision video laryngoscopes and STRYKER Power-LOAD stretcher loading/safety system for each ambulance were important. The King Vision video scopes will allow District paramedics to visualize the vocal chords and soft tissue when securing a patient’s airway increasing the effectiveness and consistency of the procedure when working on an unconscious patient. The STRYKER Power-LOAD stretcher systems will increase safety measures for the patient being transported, as well as increases safety for firefighters. The new design of the STRYKER stretcher system meets the highest standards for crash safety in the event of the ambulance being in a traffic accident while transporting a patient. Another benefit of the new ambulance loading system is injury prevention for Fire and EMS providers with hydraulic lifting capabilities of patients up to 700 pounds. Back injuries from lifting are one of the top causes of time lost on the job in the EMS service, so reducing the amount of times a firefighter has to lift a patient is key to

keeping personnel healthy and safe. The District consistently plans for future replacement of equipment and therefore the funds for these new purchases came from the Equipment Reserve Fund and the medical equipment fund. The addition of these new pieces of equipment will increase the ALS care that the District provides, which is something the District prides itself on, to continually seek opportunities of service enhancement.

How Well Do You Know Your Realtor?
S
o you want to sell your house. Your family needs a bigger space. This adventure is going to require the best guide you can find. That’s why REMAX/Nexus thinks it is important that you look for a sales agent with a Quality Service Certification. For the first time, a standard of service and accountability is being offered to consumers in the area of real estate service quality and customer satisfaction. Abby Renner, broker/owner of RE/MAX Nexus in Firestone, requires all Nexus agents complete the requirements to earn the status of a Quality Service Certified real estate professional. She is setting a good example, having received certification herself. “This means that our agents all follow a well-defined and prescribed process of service,” explained Renner in a recent interview. “Our agents outline the process they will follow to help each client have a positive experience buying or selling a home. The agent presents a written description of the process they will follow to every client, and then guarantee they will deliver on their promise.” Why is this so important? According to Larry D. Romito, President and CEO of Quality Service Certification, Inc., “This is an industry breakthrough in the establishment of a measurable standard of care and service satisfaction. An integral part of a positive transaction rests with the service evaluation feedback from every buyer and seller.”
A f t e r the closing of a property p u r c h a s e or sale, an independent r e s e a r c h company sends the customer a Quality Service Assurance survey asking tough questions about the details and overall satisfaction of service provided by the sales agent and broker. “Sales Associates are highly motivated to protect the Quality Service Certified status by delivering better service satisfaction,” points out Renner. “The era of real estate “improv” is coming to a close. The purchase or sale of what for most of us is our most valuable asset, deserves the serious attention and accountability of a defined, written and communicated service process with measurable standards and that is exactly what a Quality Service Certified professional must deliver.” Renner states, “It’s a new day for real estate customers. Now they can expect performance transparency, a reliable history of an agent’s record of service and satisfaction to past customers and what their customers have to say about their actual experience. We want to help consumers make better decisions and better choices in selecting their real estate professional.”
Frederick Refinancing Bonds
I
n 2006, the voters of the Town of Frederick overwhelmingly approved a General Obligation Bond to improve Colorado Boulevard. This project, completed in 2007, cost the Town roughly $4.48 million. Since the improvement, the Town has been meeting its obligations to the debt, which was structured to be fully paid off in 2026 at a rate of 4.25%. The Town has been watching the interest rates closely and has seen them drop dramatically. As a result, the Town is using these lower rates to the advantage of the taxpayers, and will be refinancing the bonds in late March 2015. The new rate will be somewhere around 2.5%, based on closing date, and will result in a Gross Present Value Debt Service Savings of approximately $800,000 over the remaining term of the debt service still scheduled to be completed in 2026.

The Flame of Hope Mead High School Team Joins Relay
K
aden, Emma, Kasey, and Tyler are just four of the more than 20,000 participants in the upcoming Special Olympics Unified Relay. They attend Mead High School and are proud to represent our area Special Olympics. (See more below). T h e i r t e a c h e r, Amber Vanzant, a Firestone resident, formed the team that can be as large as 15 people and these individuals need our help to raise funds so they can participate in this huge, national event. The Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America presented by Bank of America, will mobilize and unite the nation to welcome and include people with intellectual disabilities. Over the course of 46 days, in a hand-to-hand exchange led by celebrity and Special Olympics athlete cocaptains and more than 20,000 movement supporters, the Flame of Hope will be carried across the country and delivered to Los Angeles for the 2015 World Summer Games. Every day, people come together through Special Olympics and change the world through sport to create respectful and inclusive communities. The Flame of Hope acts as the beacon to unite communities in acceptance. Team Mead needs your support, but more importantly, Special Olympics needs your help. Team Mead has registered a team for the Unified Relay Across America, a once in a lifetime experience
that will deliver the Flame of Hope from Athens, Greece to Los Angeles for the 2015 World Summer Games. We can make a difference as people with all varieties of abilities will be carrying the Flame along three simultaneous routes, traveling from east to west coast from the end of May through the first part of July. The journey of the Flame will be the grand leadin to the Special Olympics World Summer Games, being held in Los Angeles during July and August. These events will showcase a movement that is breaking down barriers and lighting the way to a future of respect and inclusion. Those with intellectual disabilities continue to be one of the most marginalized and discriminated against populations in the world. Please take a stand (well in this case a walk/jog/run) and unite the country on an issue that has been going on for too long. Special Olympics’ Unified Relay Across America is a historic event with three simultaneous torch runs, held from East Coast to West Coast, to kick off the Special Olympics World Games in July/August 2015 in Los Angeles, CA. opportunity to walk, jog, run, or roll (rollerblade, skateboard, wheelchair) a 1/2 mile segment or cycle a 5 mile segment. The team will be carrying the Flame of Hope, brought all the way to the United States from Athens, Greece. The Flame of Hope is a beacon to unite communities in acceptance. Team Mead is still building but includes: K a s e y Christensen (left with Emma) is an outgoing young man who can make friends wherever he goes. He is always ready to help others. He always has a smile, wave, and kind word for anyone he comes across. Kasey has participated in Special Olympics for several years. Emma Maldoff (above with Kasey) is a kind young lady who is always ready to have a good time. She loves music and watching movies. Her favorite things to do include going to concerts (she’s going to see One Direction in Seattle this summer) and going to the movies. Emma enjoys talking to her friends and has a smile that will brighten up a room. Tyler Baird (left) is a true blessing from above. He brings smiles and joy to everyone who knows him and those who don’t know him. Tyler loves to make everyone laugh, with his “your shoes are untied” jokes and he loves to play “you’re it” with people at school and to strangers at the grocery store. Thank you for supporting not only this movement but our friends and neighbors participating in the relay!
Kaden Merrill (left with Mom, Jackie) is a kind hearted young man who looks out for everyone around him. He is always willing to help out any way he can. He has a great sense of humor with some great one liners. Kaden has participated in Special Olympics since he was young and enjoys the sports and the friends he makes. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the Consumer Report of Mead ask you to please donate to this worthy cause. Mead High School Team needs to raise $4,000. With that, they will be able to have two torches so each one can take turns carrying it for their leg of the relay. You can either go to the website www.uraa. donordrive.com and make a donation online (be sure to choose Team Mead High School) to the team as a whole or to an individual team member. You may also fill out the form below and make a check payable to Special Olympics and send to that address. One other option is to make your check to Special Olympics, put member name in the memo and send it to our office and we can present the checks to the Mead High School Team all at once! That might be fun!! If you choose that option mail to CVCR, POB 962, Frederick, CO 80530 and put Team Mead on the outside of the envelope. Please do this by April 30, 2015 so we can do an update report in the May issue.

Vision Source Expands to Firestone By Jan Sciacca
D
r. Jason L Kaminski, Optometrist, has been serving the Longmont community with his Vision Source Longmont office since 1999. 2 years ago he realized there was a need and a desire for Carbon Valley residents to have another option for eye care in their own neighborhood. After much planning, Dr. Kaminski opened Vision Source Firestone, 6120 Firestone Blvd, Ste 403, on January 28 of this year. The space is part of the former Blockbuster space, in the shopping center where King Soopers is located. Vision Source Firestone client base ranges from age 1-101+ years old and is represented by the communities of Firestone, Frederick, Dacono, Mead, Milliken, Platteville, Johnstown, Ft. Lupton, Brighton, and Longmont.
Dr. Kaminski wants the community to know there IS a difference in eye wear, both in quality and technology. Vision Source prescribes the best digital eyeglass lenses around. Vision Source also offers monthly promotions on its product line. Dr. Kaminski currently see patients on Wednesdays and an occasional Saturday. Beginning in April, Dr. Corey Bernhardt, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic associate doctor will be joining him. Dr. Bernhardt will be available for examinations on Mondays until 7 pm, and two Saturdays each month. This will afford folks some evening and weekend hours for eye care and eye wear selection. As the clinic becomes established, additional evening weekday and Saturday examination hours will be added. The times Dr. Kaminski cherishes the most are those when a child gets his or her first pair of glasses, eyes light up, and he or she can see clearly again. It’s also gratifying to him whenever his adult patient thanks him for making the timely referral for (cataract, retinal) surgery to save his or her eye sight. Dr. Kaminski simply loves meeting people and helping them see! Firestone residents John and Kim reflect
on their experience at Vision Source as, “We had a great experience today at the new Vision Source location in Firestone Colorado. Each of the 4 individuals we worked with today were extremely helpful and professional. From the Receptionist, the individual who performed the eye exam, the individual who helped with the purchase of our new eye wear and the optometrist. We are happy to have them all in the Firestone area.” Dr. Kaminski and his wife, Katie, and their two children, Kenna and Owen, live in Longmont. Dr. Kaminski is an active cyclist. He completed the Colorado Triple Crown in 2012 by cycling three one-day double century rides in the mountains of Colorado (that’s 200+ miles of cycling in a SINGLE day). He’s looking forward to doing the same this summer. He’s also an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, and has been known to schedule his autumn Saturdays around the Buckeye’s televised football schedule. Vision Source Firestone is a member of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce and is eager to greet and meet those in the community. The hours at Vision Source Firestone are: Monday 10 am -7 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8 am - 5

hat’s the old saying about March? In like a lion, out like a lamb? Although I am aware that the saying refers to the weather, and it’s certainly not following that train of thought, I must say the school has felt it with the start of state testing. The replacement for the TCAP is called PARCC and it is given to 3-8 grade students in both math and reading/language arts. The first round of this testing has been occurring in March and we will finish with it at the end of this month. So far things are going as planned. With the test being all on the computer now it has been interesting to see just how all that would work, but I’m happy to report that it’s working just fine. We also just finished our spring Parent/Teacher conferences and the attendance by parents was nearly 100%! It’s wonderful to see so much support for our kids, our teachers and our school! On the horizon for us, our Love of Learning Fair which is our elementary school celebration taking place on April 23, and our Science and Engineering Fair which is our middle school extravaganza taking place on April 24. Both of these awesome events are well worth attending! We encourage the community to come and witness all the wonderful learning that’s been taking place at our school! R
eceiving “Save the Date” cards is something that we as Americans have become familiar with due to our busy lifestyles. These “Save the Date” teaser cards allow us to plan for exciting events that will be taking place in the near future. Carbon Valley Academy would like you to save some time on or after July 28th to help us celebrate the release of Dr. Seuss’ new book “What Pet Should I Get?” March 2nd marked the National Education Associations Read across America Day and the birthday of well known American writer and cartoonist Theodor Geisel who we all know as Dr. Seuss. We are busy planning a book launch party where kids can come and hear the story read by our own Frederick Mayor, Mr. Carey as well as participate in some fun Dr. Seuss activities and games. Nothing is more rewarding than reading a good book with children and we look forward to celebrating this newly discovered Dr. Seuss manuscript with them when it is released on July 28th. Visit our website carbonvalleyacademy.org, follow us on Facebook and watch for more details in this publication regarding this special celebration. Jodi Jansen – Director

FHS Scholarships and Grants: You Can Help Today
T
he Frederick High School Education Foundation needs your help. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in September of 2012 with the sole purpose of providing scholarships and educational grants to students, alumni, and staff at Frederick High School. This is accomplished through tax deductible donations. In the last two years the foundation has been able to provide 4 scholarships and 1 grant to students at Frederick High School but we want to do more. We are looking forward to providing additional opportunities in the future. Our main fundraiser is the King Soopers rewards card. This rewards card can be obtained from the Foundation at the Frederick High School Counseling Office. The Foundation will provide you with a rewards card that is preloaded with $2.50 as a gift to you. Once you obtain the card from the Foundation, reload the card at your King Soopers Gift Services Center or checkout stand prior to using the card. The rewards card can be reloaded at any time up to $500.00. King Soopers donates 5% of every dollar loaded onto the card to the Foundation. There is no added fee or extra charge to you. If you are a community member who shops at King Soopers, and want to help support Frederick High School this is a great opportunity to do so. The Foundation would suggest that prior to any shopping at King Soopers you decide the amount of your purchases at that time and reload the card in that amount. If you would prefer to donate money directly to the Foundation you may visit the Foundation website at fhsfoundation.org for information on how to donate via Paypal. You may also mail a donation to The Frederick High School Education at P.O. Box 330, Frederick, Colorado 80530. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer on our board, please contact Carey Beneke at beneke_carey@svvsd.org.

he Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District continued with its mission of serving its communities and the residents who reside in them by placing an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) in the Carbon Valley Regional Library, 7 Park Ave. in Firestone. Frederick-Firestone FPD began placing AED’s in all schools, and government and community buildings in 2008, and has placed 16 AEDs throughout the community at locations that include all charter, elementary, middle, and high schools, government buildings in Frederick and Firestone, and in the Tri-Town Senior/Carbon Valley Gymnastics Center and Saint Vrain State Park. “We started placing Public Access AED’s in public buildings throughout the community in 2008 as part of our ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing the quality of life to those we serve. These AEDs combined with our rapid response times of highly trained Paramedics and EMTs to every emergency, and our Community CPR program make the difference when seconds count,” said Ted Poszywak, Fire Chief of the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District. “Rapid initiation of CPR and access to AEDs greatly increases survivability for someone experiencing a heart attack. This is an ongoing effort of our larger community outreach program designed to create a prepared community where every person has access to education and tools they need to make a difference.” For more information on the Public Access AED Program, Community CPR, or other services offered by the Frederick-Firestone FPD, please visit www.fffd.us or contact Community Outreach Specialist Summer Stair at 303-833-2742. ‘We Are Not The Same People,’ Say Rick And Kay Warren, Speaking About The Heartbreak Of Losing Their Son, Matthew
A
NAHEIM, CA (ANS – March 24, 2105) -- Saddleback Church, founded by Pastor Rick and Kay Warren, celebrated 35 years of ministry influence and impact during a special community-wide service on Saturday (March 21, 2015) at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Some twenty thousand people from around the world, including Rwanda and many countries in Latin America, attended the service during which the Warrens announced plans for the next chapter of Saddleback Church’s history. Pastor Warren preached the same sermon he preached during the first service hosted by Saddleback Church in 1980, titled “A Daring Faith” – but in past tense, proving how the founding members’ vision has become a reality. “God has blessed Saddleback Church in an unusual way, but it has nothing to do with our being deserving,” said Pastor Warren, speaking on the mound at the famed baseball home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. “It has everything to do with God’s grace. We dared to dream big, and God has done big things in the life of this church.” But one person who was not there was Matthew Warren, the beloved son of the couple, who died at the age of 27, from a self-inflicted gunshot almost two years ago, after a lifelong struggle with depression and mental illness. (above right) During a press conference prior to the service, Rick Warren began by saying, “It’s good to see you guys. Thank you for coming today. First let me just say, on behalf of Kay and our family, thank you for your kindness when our son died. The loss of our son two years ago, was the worst day of our lives. It was a very difficult year and you don’t get over it -- you get through it -- and the press was incredibly gracious, incredibly kind and gracious, and we’ll always be grateful for that.” Kay Warren then said, “We’re not the same people. The Rick and Kay who were alive on April 4th2013, are not the same people that exist since April 5th 2013. And some of that is changes I wish hadn’t happened. I wish our hearts hadn’t been broken and crushed and those are changes that I wish hadn’t happened. “I wouldn’t wish it on anybody else. But at the same time, I know my own hope is stronger and I minister from a stronger place of hope than I ever have before because I have a very clear recognition that the truth of the Gospel is either true or it’s not and if it’s not true then we just need to forget it all, go home, call it a farce, call it a fairytale and go home. “But if it’s true, if Jesus did raise from the dead, then that means that Jesus is alive today, and Matthew is alive today, and we’ll be alive someday when we leave this life, when these bodies die. And that truth has given me I think a deeper confidence in sharing with people as I enter into their pain, their suffering, their sorrow, whatever it is that they’re struggling with, I’m more sure of heaven, and of God’s mercy, than I have ever been before.” Holding back the tears, Kay stated, “I’ll live with a broken heart until the day that Jesus comes for me, and that’s ok. It’s ok to walk through life with tears in your eyes and a smile on your face at the same time.” Pastor Warren then said, “That’s a good point; that it’s not a contradiction to be able to laugh and cry at the same time. The Bible says that there’s a ‘time to laugh’ and ‘a time to cry.’ And I do both every day. I’ve cried every single day since Matthew died. “I don’t see that as a sign of weakness, but as a sign of love. I love my son; and I miss him very much. Now I’m not grieving for him for I know where he is. He’s in heaven. I’m grieving that I miss him. When Matthew died, this was the day that we prayed would never happen, and the day we feared might
since he struggled with mental illness since a little boy. He struggled w i t h depression and so many things for so long and we would go to doctor after doctor, and our hearts go out to people who have family members who struggle with mental illness.” Rick stated, “Some years ago, Kay and I launched the HIV/AIDS Initiative at Saddleback Church, which is one of our signature issues. We used to think that AIDS was the last taboo that people didn’t want to talk about, but now, I really think mental illness is the last taboo. It’s the one thing that nobody wants to talk about. If my stomach doesn’t work, I take a pill for it and there’s no shame. If my liver doesn’t work, it’s no shame. But if my brain doesn’t work and I take a pill for that, why am I supposed to hide that and be ashamed of it? It’s just another organ.” After a brief pause, he added, “Your illness is not your identity. Your character is not your chemistry. And Matthew had a tender heart and a broken mind. When he died, we probably received about 35,000 letters of condolences from people all around the world. There was an enormous outpouring from people. And the ones that meant the most to us were not from the famous people, the rock stars, or the prime ministers, but actually the letters that meant the most to us, were ones from people that Matthew had led to faith in Christ. And I remember writing in my journal that day, ‘In God’s garden of grace even broken trees bear fruit.’ “And the truth is that we’re all broken trees because everything’s broken. I don’t know if you realize your body doesn’t work. It doesn’t work perfectly. We’re all mentally ill in different ways, with fears and compulsions and things like that. When Matthew died, I didn’t preach for four months. I intentionally took off 16 weeks. I had friends come in and teach and pretty much spent that time alone with Kay and the Lord, and you can’t spend that much time alone and thinking, and in serious conversation, without it changing you. “I really am a different person. I feel people’s pain much more deeply. I always knew it was hurtful and I cared about people in pain. But I tear up with people in pain pretty easily now because I don’t just sympathize, I empathize with them.” I then asked Rick Warren if, after all these years, he ever felt like giving up and retiring, and he replied, “Yes, on just every Monday morning when I get PMS (Post Message Syndrome.) After a weekend of doing some six services, I think, ‘God, surely somebody could do a better job than this.’ I think that I’m not smart enough to lead a church of literally tens of thousands of people. “Let’s put this in perspective. Saddleback is based in Lake Forest, a city of 90,000 people, yet there are about 130,000 names on the church roll. So we are really operating like a city. We have over 500 staff and we have well over 18,000-19,000 lay ministers who care for all the people. It’s quite the complicated operation. “Saddleback has the unique distinction of being the only church in America that has more people in small groups than actually come at the weekends. For instance, this last weekend, we had 26,000 people in church, but we’ll have about 40,000 people in small group Bible studies because we have 8,200 small groups that meet in homes, and they’re in every city in Southern California, from Santa Monica to San Diego. There’s no city in Southern California that doesn’t have a Saddleback small group. “And that’s why, when we get ready to start campuses -- we already have people in each city -- one of the goals that I’m going to be talking about, during our launch of the ‘Daring Faith’ campaign this Sunday, is we’re going to double the number of Southern California campuses in the next three years. So we’re going to go from 10 Saddlebacks to 20.” He went on to say, “We right now have Saddleback Los Angeles which meets in the Palladium, all the way down to Saddleback
San Clemente which has their own building, and anywhere in between a lot of other places. I’ve just been on tour during the last eight weeks, visiting our different Saddlebacks and they’re quite fun to be at Saddleback Anaheim which has been meeting in The Grove right here [in the grounds of Angel Stadium] and is moving right across the street into a remodeled Bally’s, which we are turning into a church. So we’re staying right on Katella Avenue. “Saddleback San Clemente, Saddleback Anaheim, Saddleback Costa Mesa, Saddleback Newport Beach, Saddleback Irvine, these churches are running 2,000 plus people. So they, in themselves, are megachurches. The campuses are mega-churches. “So when you ask if I feel like resigning or retiring, yes, in fact every week as I’m driving to church. I have a little prayer that I pray which is, ‘God, I offer my resignation to you.’ And I’m not kidding. And I say that if there’s somebody who can lead the church to the next level of growth, I’m more than willing to let that person take over and then I say that this is the hard part, but I’m willing to do something more difficult; because there are a lot of things that would be easier than leading Saddleback Church. But to be willing to do something more difficult is for me the real test of surrender.” At the event, the Warrens announced plans for Saddleback’s next stage called “Daring Faith.” Over the next 10 weeks, church members will be encouraged to participate in special small groups to foster unity across the congregation as the church enters its next decades of ministry. Pastor Warren will be placing a special emphasis on how to dream biblically. Through “Daring Faith,” Saddleback plans to double its Southern California campuses from 10 to 20 in the next three years. Additionally, the church will expand its “PEACE Center” to each of the many Saddleback campuses throughout Southern California. “People have said ‘Happy Anniversary’ to Rick and me, but this is our anniversary – the whole congregation,” said Kay Warren. “It’s the church members who make Saddleback what it is today. This celebration is a statement of faith for the future of Saddleback taking the Gospel across the globe.” “All of our biggest dreams and best days are ahead of us,” added Pastor Warren. The Warrens founded Saddleback Church with seven people in their apartment in 1980. On Easter of that same year, 205 individuals gathered for the first public worship service. Today, the church is one of the largest in America, with 10 campuses across Southern California as well as growing congregations in Berlin, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Hong Kong, China; and South Manila, Philippines. The church averages 27,000 attendees at its weekly services, with individuals meeting in more than 7,500 small groups throughout the week. Led by Pastor Warren, author of the bestselling book, “The Purpose Driven Life,” and Kay Warren, Saddleback Church has become a global influencer through initiatives such as The PEACE Plan, Celebrate Recovery, The Daniel Plan, Global HIV and Orphan Care, and Mental Health. The church has been equally impactful across Southern California through community outreaches for all walks of life, including The Food Pantry, Military Outreach, Medical Clinic, Legal Aid, Homework Club and English as a Second Language classes, among others. “There are so many individuals not only around the world but also in our backyards who are hurting and need a message of hope,” said Kay Warren. “At Saddleback, we not only want to help those in need in our communities, but we also want to teach those who are served to then serve others in the name of Christ.” Prior to the event, from noon until the stadium gates opened at 3 p.m., Saddleback hosted tailgating with kids and student fun zones, have an interactive art display, conduct baptisms, and collect non-perishable food items to restock the Saddleback Food Pantry to bring hope to families facing hunger this Easter. Chad Cook Helps Neighbors Buy and Sell Real Estate By Jan Sciacca
C
had Cook, a Frederick resident and Associate Broker for Demis Realty, Inc., “loves partnering with people to help them achieve their buying and selling goals” and has recently partnered with Donna Demis, who is a recipient of The Five Star Real Estate Agent Award, awarded to top real estate agents for various markets who score the highest in overall client satisfaction. Prior to Chad’s establishing real estate as his career, he spent 20 years as a sales professional, with extensive experience in retail, wholesale, and consumer packaged goods. In 2008, Chad graduated from the University of Colorado with a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA). After years of successful sales and management selling “things”, he wanted something tangibly rewarding. He wanted to make “a difference.” Chad shares his passion like this, “We all have different wants and needs when it comes to buying or selling a home, but there is always a level of excitement when we finally find what we are looking for. My goal is to make one’s next move the best home buying or selling experience imaginable. They say that if you love what you do for a living, you will never work a day in your life. I truly love working with people, and believe this is the perfect career for me and my family.” Personally, Chad Cook wants to help area friends and families grow their beautiful communities and leave a “legacy” for his kids. Some of the services he provides are market analysis, professional staging and photography, and real estate consultation. After partnering with his clients and learning of their preferences, Chad will preview properties to save them time and frustration that can sometimes occur in the process. If Chad represents you on the sale of a current home, as well as assist you with the purchase of your next home, he will offer a discount on the sale of your current home. The savings could be remarkable! Although Chad is concentrating on the local area, he has a broad knowledge of the Denver Metro area and can assist anyone with buying or selling, regardless of where the property is located. Chad still remembers the first property he showed to his first clients and how satisfying it was to be with them at the beginning of their home ownership journey. An area couple, Jack and Shirleen Piela are quoted as saying, “Chad is so easy to work with. He understands what we are looking for and has patience with us in finding the best fit. He is knowledgeable, caring, and always responsive.” Chad has been married to his wife, Kari, for 12 years. They have two children named Lexi (8) and Max (5), who are busy participating in sports and activities at their local schools. Outside of work and family, Chad enjoys playing sports of all kinds including (but not limited to) golf, softball, and basketball. Some of his closest friends might be surprised to learn that right after college, he taught at a high school outside of Des Moines, IA and coached football and baseball.
Chad reminds readers, “If you are curious about your home’s value, or interested in the home selling next door, please call me, I’d love to answer your real estate questions.” Chad Cook can be reached by phone at 303.949.6742 or email at chad@coloradohomehelper.com. Client feedback from the surveys becomes part of the agent’s credentials. An overall satisfaction rating is displayed on the consumer websites (www.QualityService.org and www.RatedAgent.com) where buyers and sellers have the ability to select a real estate professional based upon each agent’s validated record of service satisfaction. “Nothing is more important to a prospective client in selecting a professional than the service results achieved with past clients,” says Larry D. Romito, President and CEO of QSC. He adds, “Consumers have greater confidence in service reliability, results and satisfaction with a Quality Service Certified real estate professional because they know that the agent’s service record has been validated by an independent third party. 100% service satisfaction record like Abigail Renner has achieved is just awesome.” About Quality Service Certification, Inc. Food for Thought
“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10-12
Remember that there is an unseen but very real spiritual battle going on behind the scenes. Evil forces are in control of this world now. The Devil is real, and he is clever. We need the Lord’s mighty power and the armor he gives us to win the battles. He has won the war; we have smaller battles to fight here. We can do it if we rely on his mighty power. —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions

Whether it was cleaning a chicken house or a pigpen, walking the corn or beans for weeds, or digging postholes for a new fence, there were a variety of malodorous smells that clung to your body and permeated your nose- plus your jeans evidenced you’d been “playing in the dirt”. Few things were as satisfying as coming to the house to clean up and remove those offending odors from both your clothes and your body. It always felt refreshing to emerge from the cleansing waters (along with a wee bit of soap) and again join civilization as an acceptable participant free from your own smelly background experiences. There is a similar dilemma for each of us in this life. Participating in a great variety of what the Bible calls “sins”, we are left in the sight of God very filthy and offensive. All sin is offensive to God- He doesn’t differentiate between big ones and small ones- and if we are left to ourselves we shall die in our sins and remain apart from God for all eternity. Now that is a serious problem which needs to be addressed with some degree of urgency, since none of us can dictate the time of our departure from this life into the next. What can we do to “shower” ourselves and be rid of the odor and offense of sin? The acceptable cure has similarities to the way we get cleaned up to go somewhere. It begins with our getting naked before the Lord- not in this case a strip show to amuse our Creator, but a ‘baring of our soul’ in His presence. Then we need to use the right kind of ‘soap’ in order to be certain our sins are washed away permanently. The very idea of standing naked before God may leave us extremely nervous and concerned, and unless we have understood that the Remedy He has provided for us will forever eliminate our sin problem, we will indeed have reason for fright- Scripture tells us “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” When I first became aware of God’s
cure for my sin, I didn’t want to submit myself. I ’ d spent 23 years without this type of bath, a n d wasn’t sure it was for me. Upon further review, and the testimonies of dozens who had taken the eternal shower provided by Jesus on the cross, I chose to find out if indeed this would work for me. I knew with certainty that I qualified as a sinner, and I had no firm answers for the problem on my own. Understanding Jesus was the remedy I’d been searching for was like finding that perfect bath bar that leaves you smelling fresh and clean and ready to face life’s challenges, and so I ‘took the plunge’ in 1970 and have not experienced a day of regret since. Just like coming out of the shower or bath invigorated, I came away from my commitment to Christ refreshed and delighted. Since that evening my life has taken many twists and turns but my Lord has guided me constantly. No more stench in my nostrils or His, because the Son of God took away all my sin and gave me a reservation in Heaven. I used ‘Jesus soap’ and came out fresh and clean. He is the only guaranteed way to eliminate the odor of our sin that alienates God from us and us from God. If you still worry about how you will do when your time comes to stand before God and give an account for your life, you’d better take a ‘shower’ before you depart. This eternal cleansing will leave you longing for Heaven instead of dreading what your reception might be like. And none who comes into the presence of God smelling like His Son Jesus will be rejected from residence there. It’s all about taking that fresh shower while you can make the choice. Today would be a good day to get your life cleaned up and ready for all your tomorrows. I urge you to do so.

How to Quit and Stay Sober
By Greg Hoffman, Director and Founder
Q
uitting is easy. The hard part for most people once they decide to quit is staying sober. There’s a reason for that and it has nothing to do with character or willpower. It has to do with how in time, alcohol changes the way the brain produces rewards. But, it’s not really that hard to stay sober either, if you do some simple things to restore the normal reward process you can quit and move on. The problem is irritability and anxiety people feel when they stop drinking. Thoughts turn to drinking because alcohol is a very reliable reward source and it quickly replaces the irritability with pleasant sensations. The best way to break the cycle and get back to feeling good without alcohol is to fix the real problem. That means fixing desensitized reward receptors so they work properly like they used to before alcohol changed them. Here’s how to fix the problem and stay sober: 1. Decide enough is enough, for you. You’re done! Not for someone else. This is about YOUR life and YOUR happiness. 2. Take appropriate medication to stop irritability leading to drinking. Some meds effectively stop cravings by acting on sites desensitized by years of alcohol exposure. 3. Eat real foods. They provide amino acids necessary to produce reward chemistry so you feel good normally and better when good things happen. 4. Take a good, daily multi-vitamin and a good amino acid supplement as insurance for those days when it’s difficult to eat real foods or you just don’t feel like it. 5. Get as much sleep as you need. Rest and
relaxation makes it easier to deal with stress. Some of us need more sleep; some of us are fine with less. Get what you need. This is important! 6. Exercise and move. But pick something you enjoy doing so you’ll do it regularly. Do it with a friend or partner or group. Put it on the calendar. You’ll feel great about 10 minutes after you stop. 7. Do interesting things you enjoy. Reconnect with lost friends, relax with music, start a project, go to a Meetup, find a hobby, play with a pet, discover your town. We live in a beautiful place with different and fun things to do all year long and a lot of them are free or inexpensive. There are so many cool and interesting things to do and see and learn close by. This may sound simple or too good to be true but it’s not. Do these things and you’ll be fine. Effective alcohol treatment doesn’t have to be expensive rehab, endless counseling or meeting attendance. It requires only three things: Readiness to change; treating the root failure mechanism and; lifestyle changes that make you feel good about yourself and others. Once you’re done, you’re done and now is a good time to be done. Call me and I can recommend effective meds your doctor can prescribe and supplements you can get at almost any health food store. Or, if you prefer a bundled treatment program and certified professionals to help you through the transition I can help you with that too. Most of us do better when we feel like we have people who care about us and our well-being looking after us. GO SOBER makes quitting and staying sober easy so you can get on with your life.

Why Women Should Resistance Train
I
f you are like most women in America, then you are probably using Pilates and yoga to try and lose weight and get into shape. Pilates and Yoga are both tremendously beneficial to add core strength, flexibility and stress reduction. The problem with these methodologies alone is that they will not deliver the permanent results that you are looking for. Truth of the matter is that any type of exercise where you spend most of your time lying down rather than standing is not going to cause major weight loss. Have you ever met someone who has lost a significant amount of weight doing either Pilates or yoga alone? Both of these fitness methods are wonderful however when used with other weight bearing activities. Walking and jogging are both considered weight bearing activities, but they only increase bone density in certain areas. In order to substantially increase bone density, females must perform activities such as squatting, lunging and deadlifts with a significant amount of weight. When lifting weights, try to stay away from “Hollywood trends” such as using very light weights for super high repetitions. Use heavier weights that will challenge you on the last few repetitions
Get the
of each set. Don’t be afraid to lift heavy so long as you are performing the exercises with perfect form and do not have any medical issues that would prevent you from weight lifting. Weight lifting will not make you bulk up like a man. Females do not have the hormone profile to support such muscle bulking. Examples of resistance training tools include free weights, wrist weights, weighted vests, exercise bands and resistance machines found at gyms and health clubs. Strive for two to three resistance training workouts a week. As with any fitness routine, never get caught up in any one way of training. It is super important to cross train and keep your routine new and fresh. The more variety you have in your workouts the more muscle confusion that you will have and therefore better results. Group classes are a great addition, but don’t put all of your energy into just doing those types of training. Lift some weights and grow strong bones!

CA’s 2015 Annual Awards Honor Chiropractic Physicians for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession Recipients were recognized at the 2015 National Chiropractic Leadership Conference, Feb. 25-28, in Washington, D.C. Arlington, Va. - The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) announced its 2015 Annual Award recipients, who were honored during ACA’s recent House of Delegates (HOD) meeting as part of the 2015 National Chiropractic Leadership Conference (NCLC 2015) in Washington, D.C., Feb. 25-28. ACA’s Annual Awards are presented to outstanding volunteer members and other individuals for their contributions to the chiropractic profession. “It is my pleasure to acknowledge this year’s award recipients who have dedicated themselves to advancing the chiropractic profession,” said ACA President Anthony Hamm, DC. “The recipients of these awards have achieved extraordinary accomplishments and deserve this recognition of their peers.” The association’s highest honor, the Chiropractor of the Year Award, was presented to the immediate past chairman of the ACA Board of Governors, Michael P. Humanitarian of the Year Award, which recognizes exceptional service, achievement and leadership to the profession. In his past service to ACA, Miller also led the creation of the Patients’ Access to Responsible Care Alliance (PARCA), a coalition of organizations that represent the interests of millions of patients and non-MD healthcare providers. t this time of year many people tend to do “spring cleaning” in the home, so I thought it would be fun to share some information about the importance of spring cleaning to help keep our mind and body happy and healthy. According to Chinese Medicine, the Liver and Gallbladder are the internal organs associated with spring, and this article will discuss the importance of taking good care of these vital organs. This season of renewal and rejuvenation is a great time to do simple “cleansing,” especially for the Liver and Gallbladder. These organs are always working to renew the body in several ways, such as their role in digestion and ridding the body of toxins. For instance, the Liver is the largest internal organ and functions include storing and distributing nourishment throughout the body, filtering toxins from the blood, and is involved in the formation and breakdown of blood. The liver, or hepatic cells, make bile which aids in digestion and stores the bile in the gallbladder to be used in the intestines for the breakdown of fats, and for enhancing the small intestine’s ability to absorb fatty acids. In addition to physical function, these organs have spiritual and emotional function
as well. The Liver involves regulating emotions, particularly anger, resentment, forgiveness, flexibility, also, creating and planning. It is a smooth and healthy Liver that contributes to our ability to visualize and make flexible plans. If the Liver were a person she would be the visionary who writes the mission statement for a company. And, if the Gallbladder were a person, he would be the one to carry out the plans, and delegate responsibility to the appropriate people in order to get the job done well. They work fabulous together. There are some very general dietary guidelines to keep in mind during early springtime which include eating less, limiting or avoiding heavy foods such as meat, dairy, poor quality fats, and intoxicants. A general list of foods that help the Liver and Gallbladder function well include the onion family, vinegar, basil, lemon, mint and leafy greens, especially dandelion and mustard greens. Carrying out a springtime cleanse can be very simple, or more involved depending upon individual need. It is a good idea to do a cleanse with the guidance of a healthcare practitioner, or along with a friend or family member so that there is someone to ask questions and talk with about the experience. In general, people notice that even though doing a cleanse may have been trying at times, they feel much more vibrant when it’s finished.

VFW Post 9741 Update
Covering Mead, Firestone, Frederick, Dacono, Fort Lupton, Brighton and Erie On February 22 a group of our Veterans visited the Army National Guard Readiness Center in Fort Lupton and received a most gracious and warm welcome by the 100 + men on duty. 1st Lt. Brian Doble arranged the visit and we discussed how we might be able to collaborate to provide support for all service members and Veterans. On March 7 a contingency of our post members attended the memorial service for Sergeant Floyd JR Jackson who served in Korea in the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was captured December 12, 1950 and died at Camp One on the Yalu River on February 3, 1951. It was a moving ceremony with full military honors. Our team was pleased we could honor the service of another fallen hero. Our post is handing our books of the Constitution to 4th or 5th graders within our area. The idea is to teach the kids the foundation of America and how we must keep freedom in place. The April monthly breakfast will be held on Saturday April 18 from 8:00 am to 11:30 am at the post location of Prairie Greens Clubhouse, 7781 Mountain View in Frederick. Only $7.00 per person and it includes eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, green chile (mild or hot), pancakes, waffles, juice and coffee. It is open to the public so bring all your friends for a great morning. We are always looking for volunteers to help with our monthly breakfast and of course Veterans who would like to be part of an organization dedicated to assisting Veterans, their families and children, and teaching citizens about freedom. Facing loss and grief is sometimes a very scary and painful experience. We will provide you with a safe and comforting place to share these feelings, with peers that are currently or have previously “walked in your shoes”. When you feel like there’s no one that “gets it”, we are here for you. Please RSVP to each meeting to Susan, by text or calling 303-875-2347.
