What’s On My Mind

Vol. 16, Issue 5

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

What’s Under This Costume?

I

read this, and I cried.

Finding Superman Imagine you’re S u p e r m a n or Superwoman, but you’ve forgotten who you are. So then you are only Clark Kent, going to work each day in your suit and glasses. One day, an old man taps you on the shoulder and says: “Excuse me, but you’re actually Superman and you can fly.” But that’s absurd and you tell him so. “Seriously,” he says. “Go to that phone booth and take off that costume that makes you Clark Kent and you will see that you’re already Superman and you can fly. But until you ‘see’ who you are, you cannot ‘be’ who you are.” So then, who are you being today? Have you forgotten who you are? Do you want to fly? Me too… —Ted Dekker (one of my favorite authors)

Why would I cry over something like this? Because I really want to be who I am meant to be. It seems, sometimes, I’m supposed to be doing something beyond what I am doing currently. I don’t feel trapped. But I do feel stuck. It doesn’t have to do with money or geography or relationships or character or morality. It’s even deeper than all that. Who is Kelly Martindale?

Do you ever wonder, “Who am I?”

Until I ‘see’ the truth of who I ALREADY am, I will only be who I am today. That is not enough. I know there is more. But how do I get to the ‘more?’ How do I find who is trapped inside of me? And why did life’s experiences have to be so tough and tragic that they threaten to smother the “true” me? Does the past have the power to draw us backward? Does it cause us to settle for mediocrity? If our focus is behind us, how do we move forward without stumbling?

Why is it that as stability and healthy growth start to happen, fear sets in and then self sabotaging behavior? I’ve read that I am the daughter of the King and that He clothes me in royal robes and I am now pure and clean. If I believe that then why am I walking around in holey jeans and flannel shirts? Where’s that phone booth? I need to see what’s under this costume that needs shed.

April Issue Corrections The CVCR regrets misinforming the community when we ran an article about New Horizon Church being the oldest church in the Tri-town area. Our readers brought to our attention that Rinn United Methodist Church began in 1806, That’s 75 years before the roots of the historic Highlandlake Church in Mead and 114 years before the launch of New Horizon Church. Our community is blessed to be the home of so many strong and healthy church organizations.

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

Paul Sorensen

 The beginning of 2015 has been an exhilarating experience here in Firestone. Our community has seen a surge of new houses being built which has brought many new people to Town. In addition, I’m also excited about the new businesses that have chosen to

open in Firestone.  First off, I would like to welcome all of our new residents and business owners to Firestone. I encourage you to become a part of our great community by becoming involved, staying up to date on the happenings and taking part in the many events that make Firestone a great place to call home. The Town’s website at www.

FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY

 Each month, I’ll give you some insight into topics that I am getting approached about Tony Carey frequently and what is coming up in my conversations with residents and business owners, whether

 If you are a Dacono business collecting sales tax, be sure to attend one of the upcoming information meetings about selfcollection of sales tax. Effective Charles Sigman

FirestoneCO.gov is a great place to start by getting connected to your new community. Sign up for notifications, settle into your home with the Welcome to Firestone packet and don’t forget to save the date for all of the fun events planned for this summer.  We’re launching a community survey in May that will provide us with valuable feedback as we move forward in making plans for our community. The survey will be direct mailed to all residents, but will also be available on our website. I’d like to ask you to please complete the survey so that we can utilize your suggestions for our future planning.  Firestone’s fun summer event season begins in late May with the start of the Food & Flick Friday series. This event series has become the premier summertime fun event. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, friends and family for a fun Friday evening sampling fabulous food from gourmet local food trucks while enjoying live music, face painting, crafts, activities and fitness and family-focused games. At dusk you can get comfortable for a movie on the big screen in the park. Check out our entire lineup, dates and locations for this series online at www.FirestoneCO.gov/FoodandFlickFridays.  The Town of Firestone Board of Trustees recently

approved plans for Pepper Jack’s Neighborhood Grille. They plan to build a new location just to the south of the Adams Bank & Trust building in front of ACE Hardware at 8274 Colorado Blvd. Another new business that has recently opened is Vision Source at 6120 Firestone Blvd. and Ziggi’s Coffee drive thru will be opening soon at 10905 Colorado Blvd.  This summer will be another busy one with many roadway improvements planned throughout our community. The largest improvement will be our Gateway Project on Firestone Boulevard, which is anticipated to begin in early summer. The project will include full build out of curb and gutter, center median islands, sidewalks and landscaping on Firestone Boulevard creating an aesthetically pleasing gateway into the community. Please bear with us as we move through this project that will greatly enhance our community. Also, please mind reduced speed limits as you drive through these areas to make sure our workers stay safe.  As always it is a great honor to serve our community as your mayor. If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact me directly by emailing psorensen@firestone.gov.

positive or negative. Here’s what’s trending in Frederick this month.  As you may have seen, we have recently begun to remove the former public works building from the site across from the high school. One of the reasons we built the new Public Works Building on a new, more appropriate site was so this high traffic property could be used for a better purpose to benefit the community. We are demolishing the facility as part an Urban Renewal Plan in order to ready the land for future development that will better serve the community and hopefully the high school as well.  I have had many questions on mosquito abatement, so here’s the run down on that program. The Frederick Public Works Department sprays for mosquitoes as needed Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you live east of I-25 and west of Colorado Boulevard, your neighborhood will be sprayed after 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. If you live west of I-25 or east of Colorado Boulevard your neighborhood

will be sprayed after 7 p.m. on Thursday night. Keep in mind that spraying can’t happen in inclement weather or winds over 10 mph. Also, rest assured that the materials used in fighting mosquitoes are not hazardous to humans or animals. If you have questions or concerns about the materials used, please call Public Works at 720382-5800.  Another construction project you may have noticed is taking place at Crist Park is a long awaited public restroom. Since the additions of the splash pad and gazebo along with the many events held in Downtown Frederick, the increased use of this park has made a more permanent bathroom solution necessary. We hope you will enjoy the convenience at one of the many events coming up this summer.  If you would like me to come and meet with your group, I am happy to do so, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

July 1, 2015, The City of Dacono will begin collecting the 3% local sales tax directly from businesses. The City of Dacono is a Home Rule municipality under Article XX of the Colorado Constitution, and has the power to collect its own taxes locally and not through the Colorado Department of Revenue. The City of Dacono will host two informational meetings for businesses required to collect and remit sales tax on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:00 a.m. and Wednesday, June 3 at 5:30 p.m.  Self-collection has been enacted in order to enable the City to more efficiently and accurately process our portion of the sales tax. With the sales tax collection being handled by the State, the City is limited in its knowledge of the details and therefore in its

enforcement of audits and collections. In addition, self-collection of sales tax makes funds readily available for City use. The majority of home- rule cities in Colorado collect their sales tax directly as opposed to utilizing the services of the State of Colorado.  Businesses collecting local sales tax should not send the City of Dacono 3% sales tax to the State of Colorado for any transaction conducted after June 30, 2015. Additionally, all persons engaged in the operation, conduct, or carrying on of any trade, profession, business, or occupation within the City, whereby the collection and remittance of sales or use tax is obligatory, should purchase City sales and use tax license. This includes rentals, leases, deliveries or shipments into the City.

Firestone’s One-Month-Old Baby Lincoln Berry Needs Our Help approximately 50 microns in diameter. At such a small size, these microbubbles are able to enter the skin’s pores, removing impurities, carrying oxygen for improved metabolism, lightly caressing skin for exfoliation, and improving hydration for dry skin. According to a personal story shown on YouTube at https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=uHUAORECgfE. The bathtub has the ability to stop infections, helps the skin soften and gives comfort enough to get good rest. • There is a need for travel expenses to determine where they can live. Adam has run out of PTO from work so every day he takes off to care for his family is unpaid. They will need airline tickets, lodging,

By Kelly Fordyce Martindale magine not being able to close your eyes, NO blinking at all. Imagine having to be lathered in Vaseline ointment every two hours. Imagine having to take multiple baths a day just to get some relief from the pain that your own skin causes you. Now imagine that for a newborn baby. The Carbon Valley recently welcomed a tiny child into our community. Baby Lincoln was born March 21: a tiny little thing, a hair short of five pounds. While his birth was five and a half weeks early, his daddy and mommy, Adam and Kaysie Berry of Firestone, along with his big brother and sister, Zion and Ruthie, were ecstatic and blessed by his birth.

I

But the obvious joy and excitement was overshadowed when the doctors diagnosed baby Lincoln with a skin condition called Ichthyosis. It is a skin disorder characterized by dry, scaling and thickened skin. They won’t know which strain Lincoln has until they start skin biopsies when he is about two months old. Regardless of the strain of the disorder, this life experience has changed everything for the Berry family.

What is Ichthyosis like for a newborn and his mommy? In her blog, https:// lovinglincolnjames.wordpress.com/, Kaysie writes: I love you and I will fight for you. I cry daily, not because I’m sad but because I love you and this is plain hard, I see everything, I do everything. I see your raw skin as I apply yet another layer of Vaseline and hope I don’t catch a scale and pull, I see your dry eyes as you try to force them shut for relief, I see the scales, all the scales. I see the layers, I see your body trying to let go of the scales just for more to awake. I see your collodion membrane still so tightly attached to your head,

with every shed comes a bald spot. I hear your sweet newborn cry as you want more milk because your body is working so hard making and shedding skin, I’m trying so hard to keep up with pumping and nursing because I know mamma’s milk is what you need but I’m terrified I can’t keep up….

Angel Berdiales Owner Shalom Bikes

More than the vast amounts of Vaseline and a special ointment for Lincoln’s eyes, he needs moisture; lots of humidity. Colorado is not known for that. Research has found that humidity will moisten the scales and slow the process of the scaling giving Lincoln much relief. While at the hospital, Lincoln was in an incubator that provided humidity. At home, this humidity cannot be provided. So the Berry family must move to a more humid climate. According to their research they have three choices; Hawaii, closest to the equator and most tropical or Florida or Texas. Before they make the move, they have to see which state would best support the requirements for baby Lincoln’s life. In the meantime, daddy and mommy work to keep Lincoln comfortable while nurturing the siblings and each other. The Berry’s are grateful for the support of their extended family members such as grandparents Glenn and Kema Berry and all their friends for the prayers, meals, babysitting and help with financial support. Adam and Kaysie love Jesus. They know God is with them. However, God doesn’t expect any of us to go-it-alone. So I am asking you to put yourself in the shoes of this mommy or daddy. I’m sure there would be moments you would give anything to have support from your friends and neighbors if you were going through this life changing experience. Adam was raised in Frederick, and Kaysie grew up in Longmont, when they married they made Carbon Valley their forever home. But as we know, “forever” has a tendency to change. Kaysie is a photographer but is taking time off to care for their newborn. Adam has a good job with Samuel Engineering. However, the expenses have already piled up beyond their belief. With Lincoln’s new medical requirements and spending 2 weeks in the NICU, the Berry’s need financial support for several major things. I think the Carbon Valley has the ability to help one of their own, well five of their own. Here’s how you can help: • This skin disorder causes cracking skin that can easily become infected. So they will be needing a Micro Silk bath tub. What’s a micro silk bath tub? Caring for Ichthyosis can feel like a full-time job. In just 20 minutes, MicroSilk® provides a noninvasive, natural solution for cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and softening of the skin. MicroSilk® hydrotherapy oxygenates bath water up to 70% more than regular tap water with microbubbles

meals, and transportation as they strive to relocate their family. • There are extensive medical expenses that are not covered by insurance including the upcoming skin biopsies and genetic testing. There are also travel expenses associated with every trip for medical care and still, Adam will have to take these days without pay. If you would please join me and the Carbon Valley Consumer Report in reaching out to this family and showing them that we care; we are community, we are family. Any business that would like to give a financial gift will receive promotional value in upcoming CVCRs. Please send your gift to: CVCR for the Berry’s, POB 962, Frederick, CO 80530. Checks can made to Adam Berry. Please pray for the Berry Family and reach out to them on Facebook or Kaysie’s blog. Let them know they are NOT alone.

7 Reasons to Own Your Own Home By Jan Sciacca iver Garden Winery is Weld County’s first winery and is a treat to have as our neighbor! Robert and Mary Stahl opened River Garden Winery in August of last year. This new facility, located between Fort Lupton and Platteville, hosts a tasting room and an event space available for parties. River Garden Winery is unique. It’s located in the country on the Platte River where there are old cottonwoods and an abundance of wildlife. Deer, bald eagles, wild turkeys, great horned owls and great blue herons, are regular visitors there. All River Garden Wines are produced right there and are only available there. Bob and Mary Stahl are both originally from northwest Ohio where they grew up on farms. They moved to Colorado in 1978 and to their current location near Fort Lupton in 1992. Bob decided in 2004 to try his hand at grape growing with the intention of making wine if the grapes would indeed grow. In the spring of 2005 the first acre of 8 different varieties were planted. That’s when Stahl Vineyards started making a name for itself. The grapes grew beyond expectations, so more vines were planted each year until there were about 5 acres. The grape varieties selected are hardy and resistance to cold winter temperatures. Most are good to 20 below zero. Bob began making wine commercially in 2008 as the first grapes became available. Stahl Vineyards currently grows about 4 acres of wine grapes which are used by the winery. They had grown five acres of grapes but recent lost 1 acre as an easement. Bob says, “Our estate wines are made from hybrid grapes and are quite unique for the area. We have wines made from our own grapes as well as grapes brought over from the West Slope and Washington State.” Mary works in Downtown Denver in the oil and gas industry and has over 30 years’ experience as a Geo-tech. Bob left the State of Colorado after 22 years of public service in 2011 to begin construction of the winery building. Getting the winery built has been the biggest challenge

A

R

by far for the Stahls. Being the first winery in Weld County presented many obstacles that they had to overcome. Being in a flood plain also complicated things. The Stahls love for meeting new people and making them smile and being able to share their country setting with others was a driving force in encouraging them to persevere. River Garden Winery has patrons arriving from Denver to Boulder and from Greeley to Keenesburg, with patrons’ feedback being very positive. The tasting room is currently open on Saturdays 12 to 5 pm and is a good venue for a fun event that can be shared by friends. Bob and Mary invite you to bring a picnic and buy a bottle of wine. Bob asserts, “It is a great close-by place to enjoy a glass or two of wine while enjoying the country.” The Stahls encourage folks to subscribe to the winery’s emails via their website. By doing so, one will receive invitations to barrel tastings and blending competitions. River Garden Winery is located at 9490 County Road 25, Fort Lupton. Its website is rivergardenwinery.com and its phone number is 303.304.4064. The company is also on Facebook.

re you thinking about buying a home? If so, consider these 7 advantages to owning a home as you make that decision: 1. Tax breaks. The U.S. Tax Code lets you deduct the interest you pay on your mortgage, your property taxes, as well as some of the costs involved in buying your home. 2. Appreciation. Real estate has longterm, stable growth in value. While yearto-year fluctuations are normal, median existing-home sale prices have increased on average 6.5 percent each year from 1972 through 2005, and increased 88.5 percent over the last 10 years, according to the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®. In addition, the number of U.S. households is expected to rise 15 percent over the next decade, creating continued high demand for housing. 3. Equity. Money paid for rent is money that you’ll never see again, but mortgage payments let you build equity ownership interest in your home. 4. Savings. Building equity in your home is a

ready-made savings plan. And when you sell, you can generally take up to $250,000 ($500,000 for a married couple) as gain without owing any federal income tax. 5. Predictability. Unlike rent, your fixed-mortgage payments don’t rise over the years so your housing costs may actually decline as you own the home longer. However, keep in mind that property taxes and insurance costs will increase. 6. Freedom. The home is yours. You can decorate any way you want and benefit from your investment for as long as you own the home. 7. Stability. Remaining in one neighborhood for several years gives you a chance to participate in community activities, lets you and your family establish lasting friendships, and offers your children the benefit of educational continuity. Firestone and Brookfield Residential take Another Step Toward Partnership

Preventative Maintenance for Your Masonry and Brick

Nationally recognized developer applies for annexation into Town

he brick and stone in your home should be cared for just as your walls, woodwork and siding should. Adding a waterproof clear coat to your exterior masonry will help protect against water damage to the interior and exterior of your home. It will also provide protection from the sun, wind, rain, snow, deicers, etc, can help to control mildew, water stains and efflorescence, a white, powdery residue that forms crystals which migrate to masonry surfaces. Landscape walls, retaining walls and cement swimming pools will also benefit from this form of protection. The same is true with brick and stone on the interior of your home, mainly at the fireplace, hearth and brick walls. A clear coat will help resist oils, soot, spills and scuffs. Interior brick can also fade and become dirty over time causing it to look dull and dingy. Painting the brick is one of the fastest updates and we do this most often at fireplaces to brighten them up. Cement and cinder block walls in the basement are perfect candidates for this treatment. Tired of your brick color? Paint it! Many homeowners feel they are limited to their house color when they are selecting exterior colors because they have to consider their brick color. This can be frustrating, particularly if your home is older and the colors are dated. You can change the color of your brick while you paint your siding. There are many products available for sealing and painting brick, masonry and stucco. The surface will need to be cleaned with a masonry cleaner, patched if necessary, allowed to dry thoroughly and cracks and defects in the mortar and grout will need to be repaired before starting the process. Painting masonry can be tricky so be sure to read all instructions before starting.

In a major step toward solidifying efforts toward incorporating a new planned community development into the Town of Firestone, Brookfield Residential Colorado has applied for formal annexation into the Town with Town officials. The annexation would affect the Brookfield Residential property along a portion of Colorado Boulevard south of Colo. Highway 66 and east of Interstate 25, putting the property within Town limits in an extension of Firestone’s current northern border. The development will ultimately bring thousands of new homes and a host of new amenities to the area, an outcome Firestone community leaders welcome. “We couldn’t be more pleased with this latest development in our ongoing effort to make what has come to be called the Firestone North Annexation part of our Town,” said Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen. “We look forward to a long relationship with Brookfield and are excited about the planned community they intend to bring to Firestone.” The annexation application includes 1,200 acres of land bordered by Colorado Boulevard and Colo. Highway 66. All parcels of the community were entitled by Weld County in 2006. Ultimately, the development is planned to include new homes as well as interconnecting trail systems, numerous parks and amenities around a 120-acre lake, located within the community boundaries and adjacent the St. Vrain State Park. Brookfield owns the water rights to serve the entire planned community. The first homes would begin construction by early 2016. “Our application for annexation into Firestone is just one more step toward joining a community about which we’re all

excited,” said Shannon Robbins, general manager of acquisitions and architecture for Brookfield Residential Colorado. “The outstanding planned community we intend to build will fit perfectly into the dynamic and growing Town.” Because the new and sizable community is planned along Firestone’s north border, many in Firestone leadership see allowing it to join the Town as the logical path forward. The area has been part of Firestone’s comprehensive planning area for more than a decade. “It just makes sense to make a community of this magnitude part of Firestone, especially since it will rest directly against our northern most border,” Sorensen said. “The developer’s vision for the area aligns with our vision for the future of Firestone so it’s a win for both our current residents and our future residents.” The proposed development is seen as a boon to the economy across the board by many local businesses in Firestone. They believe Firestone needs to continue to build the critical mass necessary to creating a self-sustaining community and part of that critical mass is additional residential rooftops that will become home to people who will use the goods and services provided by the businesses. “As a business owner in Firestone, I believe it really is the case that a rising tide lifts all boats,” said Debbie Morton, First Choice Insurance Agency. “I’m enthusiastic about Brookfield Residential’s new community joining Firestone and I’m looking forward to what that kind of momentum will mean to the future of our Town.” The Firestone Board of Trustees will consider their approval of the annexation request after public input.

Thanks for GIVING with GivePower Did you know that every time a customer goes solar, a school is that much closer to receiving electricity? The GivePower Foundation is a SolarCity nonprofit organization committed to extending the environmental and social benefits of clean, renewable energy across the world. We’ve teamed with buildOn, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building schools in some of the economically poorest countries in the world, including Nicaragua, Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal and Senegal. Through our partnership, we will train buildOn employees and work closely with local communities to install and maintain their solar power system. Our mission is to make clean renewable energy accessible to those who need it most and reduce the world’s dependence on finite, polluting power sources. Here’s how you’re helping… For every megawatt of residential solar power that we install, SolarCity

donates a solar power system and a battery combination to a school that has no access to electricity. On average, with every 160 customers that go solar with SolarCity, another school will receive the gift of light. Your solar panels will not only power your home, but also power a school. To learn more about GivePower and how you can go Solar with SolarCity, please contact me. Remember, it’s always $0 down and Free installation. I also want to remind you that the rebate from United Power may be decreasing on July 1st. So, if Solar is something you’ve considered, now is the time to act on it so that you may take advantage of the higher rebate. Contact Eric Kleffner if you are interested in seeing how Solarcity would compare to your current electric bill, as well as other questions about rebates or tax credits. Call Eric Kleffner at 720-227-3748 or email to ekleffner@solarcity.com Please tell you read this in the Carbon Valley Consumer Report.

By Jan Sciacca fter focusing on creating beautiful, healthy smiles at Longmont Braces, which opened in 2010, Dr. Stephanie Ross noticed that many families were commuting to Longmont from the Carbon Valley area for their orthodontic care. She decided to open a second location in Firestone in order to better meet the needs of the southwest Weld community. The new business dubbed Firestone Braces opens this month at 8310 Colorado Blvd Suite #100, Firestone. (That’s east of Blackjack Pizza and Adams Bank and Trust in the newly completed professional building.) To launch their Grand Opening, Firestone Braces is offering a $500 discount to each of the first 20 patients that start Comprehensive Treatment. Firestone Braces which serves the communities of Firestone, Frederick, Dacono, Mead and Platteville, treats everyone from children to adults and anyone who wants to improve their smile. Dr. Ross doesn’t routinely put young children in braces, as she thinks many orthodontists over treat at a young age. She does believe though that it is important for children to be seen around age 8 because occasionally there are issues which, if you catch them early, are much more easily and effectively treated. Dr. Ross declares, “I have the best job in the world! We have a great team and wonderful patients. The most rewarding thing for me is seeing the change in my patients as their smile changes. It is amazing to see their confidence build and watch them become more comfortable showing off their smile.” Dr. Ross is an orthodontist, which is a specialized dentist. She went to 4 years of dental school followed by nearly 3 years of schooling just to study orthodontics (braces). On her education journey, Dr. Ross attended Trinity University in San Antonio, TX for her undergraduate degree and the University of Colorado for her Doctorate of Dental Surgery. She completed her General Practice Residency at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, and then returned to the University of Colorado for her Orthodontic Residency. Dr. Ross attends many continuing education courses throughout the year. She is committed to staying current with the latest literature, new technologies, and orthodontic techniques. She is also involved in an orthodontic study club, which allows her to meet with other orthodontists to discuss cases, treatments, and ways to make our patients’ visit more enjoyable. Her professional affiliations include the American Dental Association, the Colorado Dental Association, the American

A

Association of Orthodontist and the Boulder/Broomfield County Dental Society. Dr. Ross shares “I grew up in Longmont and am so happy I have returned to the area to practice. I am excited to become an involved member of this community. Both my parents are retired teachers, so I value education. As a way of giving back to the community, I will be giving presentations on oral health at Prairie Ridge Elementary and Imagine Charter. It is important to me to get kids excited about health and science. “ One of Dr. Ross’s fondest memories was at a recent Patient Appreciation Night, held at the Longmont Ice Skating Pavilion, where over 100 people showed up for an evening of ice skating - Hawaiian style! Although not required, there was an abundance of leis, grass skirts, and other kooky costumes served up with hot chocolate and cookies. The highlight of the evening was when three lucky patients got to celebrate by throwing a pie in the face of their (unlucky x 3!) orthodontist! That was the exact moment everyone in attendance showed off their beautiful smiles (and their laughter.) As an orthodontist, Dr. Ross believes in providing the best result possible when it comes to straightening teeth and correcting bites, but she’s also committed to having fun with her patients too. When she is not in the office, Dr. Ross enjoys mountain biking, skiing and playing the piano. Dr. Ross was recently named a 5280 top Orthodontist for the area. She shares, “We are proud of this distinction and continue to strive for excellence. At Firestone Braces, you will notice a state-ofthe art facility and with that, exceptional patient care and beautiful results. Now is YOUR time to smile!”

Firestone Braces is located at 8310 Colorado Blvd Suite #100, Firestone. Their website is firestonebraces.com and their phone number is 303.881.1181.

Over 70 children accompanied by families attended the event from 2 to 4. The egg hunt (colored and treat filled plastic eggs) began with the appearance by the Easter Bunny. Attendees colored bunny pictures and received baskets, stuffed animals and cup cakes as a surprise. A special treat was photo ops with the Easter Bunny. This is an annual event always held on Palm Sunday and we hope to see you again. We hope you had fun. We thank everyone again for you support. April Was National Lawn Care Month Ed Markham, President of the Rocky Mountain Sod Growers (RMSG) wants everyone to know that April is National Lawn Care Month. “As the temperature warms, more and more people are taking a good look at their lawns. It’s a chance to prepare for the summer season and to ensure that your lawn is ready to go after a cold winter. Educated homeowners know that the work they put in today is an investment for the future,” notes Markham. “April is National Lawn Care month and a great time to learn more about sod and the needs of various grass types,” he adds. For that reason, individuals are encouraged to visit the RMSG official website to learn lawn care from the experts. Visit www.sod-growers. com and “like” the official Sod Growers Facebook page. Understanding the actual water needs of your landscape is critical to making informed decisions about what types of plants, including grass, to include. For years the myth that grass wastes water has been proliferated in an attempt to limit what so many desire. However, the truth is that grass doesn’t waste water, people do. “When people become informed concerning the actual water needs of their lawn, they are surprised. Most people over water their lawns,” says Markham. “I encourage everyone to consider their landscape as an asset,” Markham adds. “Increase your property value by ensuring that inefficient or broken sprinkler systems are addressed. Plan for grass around your home to decrease the heat during summer, thus keeping air conditioning down. Become more educated concerning the different varieties of grass, their water needs and how they perform in different settings.” For additional information, please contact a Rocky Mountain Sod Grower member - the experts in sod care and installation by visiting www.sod-growers.com. Keep your lawn healthy - it’s money in your pocket.

Cruising on the River! River cruising is hot. There’s a river cruise for every taste, style and budget. With nearly a dozen new European river boats being built, it’s no doubt that river cruising is the latest trend. Statistics indicate that most river cruise passengers have already taken an ocean cruise and they are ready to move inland to see European cities up-close and personal. What are the advantages of a European river cruise? While cruise ships only touch the edges of continents, river boats take you to the very heart of magnificent cities and ancient towns. Quietly glide past hillside vineyards, medieval castles and historic monuments. Disembark and walk right into town for a lunch at a local café or experience that local beer or wine. Pack light. Not just for the airline requirements but for convenience. There are no formal nights. Men need only a collared shirt and sport coat. Women can leave their long dresses and high heels at home. Attire is country club casual even at dinner. Acknowledge your physical limitations. Cobblestone streets, walkways and stairs can be a bit tricky to navigate; Europe doesn’t subscribe to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Pace yourself accordingly. Some of the river boats do not have elevators, so make sure to let your travel consultant know and she will choose the boat that fits your needs. The river boats usually only have 3-4 decks. Alternatively, once ashore, many river cruises lines offer an easy-paced walking tour or bicycles to use or even a bike tour. Unlike cruise ships, river boats have “open seating.” Stroll into the dining room for a leisurely buffet breakfast and some made to order specialties. Lunch is fairly relaxed, too, as it is mainly buffet-style dining. Dinner times can vary based on the timing of the shore excursions, so check your daily planner. Some cruise lines offer wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Cash is king. Make a list of the countries you will visit and find a local bank here that will order your foreign currency. Mainly, you’ll need Euros. But if you can get any of the other currencies (and

BUY • SELL • PAWN

there are quite a few on the lower Danube River) you can avoid the high commission exchange fees. Of course, the boat’s front desk will also exchange currency, but there are some limitations. Tipping at the end of your cruise is expected to be in Euros on some cruise lines. If you travel on the rivers in the spring or fall, there will certainly be a variance in temperatures and precipitation. Bring that light rain gear and a folding umbrella. If you must carry belongings, a tote bag is suggested. At least once on your river cruise, get up and outside just before sunrise. A fog-like mist rises from the river, birds slowly begin to chirp and the river looks like liquid silver. It’s a not-to-be-missed experience. You’ll see swans lazily floating alongside the boat sometimes. Watching the activity along the shore is always fascinating. Even though it seems this is a slow paced, non active cruise, it can be quite the opposite with a chance to hike and bike around the area. In the past, most of the European river cruises only catered to adults, but in 2016 Adventures by Disney has arranged for some special sailings on the Danube with a wonderful river cruise company. There will be connecting cabins onboard this new ship too. Arrive early or stay late. You’ve come so far for this river cruise, it seems like a waste if you don’t spend at least two full days in either your arrival or departure city. Taking a European river cruise? Investigate your options and try to include a few extra days on land to fully appreciate the cities along the paths of the great rivers of Europe. If you have a group of friends or family, there are some wonderful group specials that can be arranged too.

You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know This saying is especially applicable with real estate transactions. Even those that have bought or sold several homes rarely do it often enough to keep up with all the complexities of a real estate transaction. For most people, buying a home is one of the largest purchases (and financial commitments) they will ever make. You need to make sure that you have the most complete information possible, as well as sound advice when you are making all of the decisions surrounding the purchase of a property. Picking the right home is just one of the decisions you will make. Others include: What price to pay? How to structure the financing? What about closing costs? How to best negotiate the offer? Title? HOA? What inspections issues should be addressed? Appraisal? Loan conditions? What timeframe for the transaction? What about possession? These are just a few of the issues to be addressed during the process, and they are looked at differently if you are the Buyer or the Seller.

The market is constantly changing and varies from location to location and within different price ranges. The input and advice you get from your Realtor, working as a Buyer’s Agent or a Seller’s Agent will help you immensely in the process. Your Realtor’s experience will not only help you understand the issues, but will bring to your attention issues you may have not contemplated. The Realtor is not there to make the decisions for you, but to help you in understanding the issues and your alternatives completely so that you can make the best decision possible. Take some time to select the Realtor you will be working with, either when buying or selling. Ask about their experience, background and office support. Make sure it is someone that you are confident in, trust, and you are comfortable working with. Ask others about the Realtor and talk to others they have worked with. Discuss how you would prefer communications. Buying or selling can be an intense and somewhat stressful process, but the right Realtor can make it as smooth as possible, and even a little fun.

Jane Kraemer Joins RE/MAX Nexus Joining RE/MAX Nexus in Firestone as Sales Associate is Jane Kraemer. A resident of the Longmont/Mead area for the past 20 years and Colorado native, Jane says of her career, “Being a realtor is something I have always wanted to do. It is a perfect fit for me.” “I love working with my clients and forming relationships with them. I count many of my former clients among my friends,” comments Kraemer, who strongly believes that consistency and reliability are the two most important aspects she can and does offer her clients. Kraemer brings a strong background in marketing, advertising, and video production, as well as over a decade in the legal field, to enhance her experience as a realtor at Nexus. Letter from the Director

I am very excited to have been selected by the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors as the Executive Director for the Chamber. My first day was Monday, April 13, 2015 and I hit the ground running by attending the Chamber Ambassadors meeting, United Power Annual Meeting, and the Chamber Monthly Business Luncheon with guest speaker Dr. Don Haddad. Chamber members - my plan is to speak to each member to find out what is working for you and what is not. I welcome any suggestions that each of you have to improve you Chamber experience. Community Leaders – I will be attending the town and city meetings as often as possible. I want to get to know each of you better and figure out how the Chamber can help our communities grow and how the Chamber can give back. Residents of Carbon Valley - I look forward to meeting you at the community festivals and finding out how you use the Chamber and what we can do for you. For those of you who do not know me here is a short bio: I am a Colorado native, born in Aurora, raised in Michigan, and returned to Colorado in 1983. My husband and I moved to Historic Firestone in 1995 before there was a “Historic Firestone”.

This is the number one reason charter schools arrived on the education scene. Charters serve all children, not just those that learn best in a traditional school environment. This encompasses gifted children, children of parents looking for a safe environment, struggling students, children whose parents want more direct involvement in their child’s education, special needs students and the list goes on. Charter schools stress a personalized approach to education, including such things as small class sizes, more individual attention to each student, rigorous and researchbased curriculum and a strong parental presence. Carbon Valley Academy offers all of those things and more. First and foremost, our focus is KIDS! They are our number one priority and everything we do is

need for subject-content knowledge in order to produce strong academic skills. Core Knowledge is different in that it tells us what a student should KNOW versus what they should BE ABLE TO DO. Carbon Valley Academy has a knowledgeable, focused and caring faculty. High expectations are key with them. Fluidity in ability allows our students to receive instruction at the appropriate level, not too hard so as to frustrate and not too low so as to bore them. Being fluid allows them to move as their skills and abilities change. The data driven approach we take lets teachers stay on top of their students’ ability and make regular and necessary adjustments so as to keep them performing at their correct levels. Here at Carbon Valley Academy, we also consider students, parents, the community and all of our staff, family. Our

roviding students with engaging, interactive, and educational learning experiences is important to Imagine Charter School at Firestone. Just one of the many learning opportunities we are excited to share with students is Rome Day. Third grade students spent many history classes learning all about Roman history including how the Romans lived, their government, their architecture, the unfortunate destruction caused by Mt. Vesuvius, and the fall of the great Roman Empire. To celebrate their learning, students became Romans for a day. During Rome Day, students ate an authentic Roman meal, watched and participated in chariot races, played Roman games, and reported on people living during the height of the Roman Empire. “Rome Day was really fun and it taught me more about Rome,” said Izzy Zuniga, a third grade student. “We played a ball, marble, and a game like tic tac toe. We also made Mosaics and did chariot races. I got to learn what Romans played and did.” “Rome Day was like being an actual Roman,” said student Tatum Sanders.

“My favorite part about Rome Day was chariot races.” The interactive learning experiences at Imagine Charter School are something students look forward to as they move throughout their education. Imagine Charter School would love to share with you about these experiences and how we can meet your student’s individual needs. valued. Teachers strive to make personal connections with their students which allows students to feel safe and cared for so as to focus on their job as a student. Carbon Valley Academy also places a strong emphasis on character; so much so that it is part of our mission statement. We champion character and feel it is as much a part of a students’ educational experience as academics. With the guidance of our school counselor we take part in a character corral program that honors students as champions of character. Some other highlights of Carbon Valley Academy include the multiple field trips our students take yearly; including a bi-yearly trip for our 7th and 8th graders to our nations’ capitol, Washington D.C. We are proud to have a uniform program in which all students take part. Having students in uniform allows them to focus on character and academics rather than the latest fashion.

competing with other district schools. Projects are a large part of how we teach and how students learn. All students have the opportunity throughout the year to share with others their learning through the projects they create. It is a testament to the innovation that’s made possible as a charter school. For the 2015-2016 school year, as yet another way to stand out from the crowd, Carbon Valley Academy has chosen to offer FREE full day kindergarten as a way to introduce new families to us. We believe that once you’ve experienced the Carbon Valley Academy way, the choice of where to educate your child will be clear.

Imagine Firestone Odyssey of the Mind Teams Headed to World Finals Competition in Michigan!

I

magine Charter School at Firestone believes in fostering creativity and teamwork in our students, and in building strong community partnerships. Odyssey of the Mind achieves part of this goal, and we invite you to join Team Imagine Firestone as a partner in developing creative students. Odyssey of the Mind is a wonderful program that teaches students how to be creative and to work as a team in a problem solving environment. This season we had four teams of seven students join the program. Each team solved an in-depth problem, created a skit to demonstrate their solution, and worked on how to solve ‘spontaneous’ problems as a team. The teams began work in September and presented their solutions at a Regional Tournament in March. All four teams advanced to the State Tournament, where two of our teams qualified for the World Finals in May. These teams are in need of your financial support! World Finals is an amazing opportunity for these creative students to meet and compete with teams from all over the world. This year it will

be held at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The cost for each student and coach for lodging, food, and tournament fees (excluding travel) is $531, for a total of nearly $5,000 per team! The program is not funded by the host school, and relies solely on the support of parents and community partners. While we fundraise throughout the school year to help defray the cost of World Finals, we are in need of additional fundraising to cover the entire room and board cost or the travel expenses for these incredible kids. The Marvelous Marble-ators (Gabe Friedl, Raiden Stahly, Abby Read, Kennedy Rhodes, Kaiden Box, Collin Thompson, and Caitlyn Rea) participated in the balsa wood structure problem “Losing Your Marbles”, and placed 1st in both Regional and State competitions. This problem required teams to design, build, and test a structure at least 8 inches tall weighing less than 18 grams, made only of balsa wood and glue, that supported as much weight as possible. The structure had to hold five marbles that were released during weight placement using a team-created device that removed a piece of the structure. The team

incorporated weight placement and “losing your marbles” into a mad scientist-themed performance. Their structure held 395 lbs. The MIB Time Squad (Kyle Van Sickle, Abby Hejmanowski, Jessika Stonebraker, Jennipher Stonebraker, Alex, Olson, Drew Spiegelberg, and Emma Hejmanowski) chose the technical problem “Experiencing Technical Difficulties”, and placed 2nd in both Regional and State tournaments. The problem included using rubber bands as an alternative power source in several devices that helped correct a ‘technical difficulty’ involving a time travelling alien and Napoleon Bonaparte’s failed Russian Campaign. The team was required to complete seven tasks with these devices, and incorporate the tasks into their performance skit. Additionally, they had to work with size restrictions, as all of their devices, props, and stage set was required to fit into two small containers Because Odyssey teaches so many skills needed in the workplace, we are also

reaching out to community/employersponsors for our teams. Your sponsorship of any amount would help cover this cost, and greatly benefit these teams, some of whom could not make the trip without fundraising assistance. There are very few extracurricular activities that, among other things: • Teach students how to work in teams so they learn cooperation and respect for others • Give students the opportunity to evaluate ideas and make decisions • Require students to work within a budget and manage costs • Inspire students to look for more than one way to solve a problem Your support is greatly appreciated and will go a long way in helping us reach our fundraising goal. Thank you for taking the time to consider supporting the Imagine Firestone Odyssey of the Mind program. Please contact me at 303-772-3711 if you have any questions. All donations are tax deductible. S

o long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye…as the 2014-2015 school year comes to a close, we here at Carbon Valley Academy must bid a fond farewell to our long-time special education teacher and valuable member of our family, Dr. Carol Marsh. With the close of this school year, Dr. Marsh will embark on a new phase in her life; one of retired teacher. Prior to her joining the CVA team in 2007, Dr. Marsh lent her teaching expertise to Niwot High School, Aurora Public Schools and the University of Northern Colorado. She has extensive experience at all levels and in a variety of roles and settings. Her Ph.D. in Teacher Education/Staff Development was earned from CSU, her Master’s as well as

her Bachelor’s from San Jose State University in California where she was born. Over the years she has relished being a special education teacher. She has especially enjoyed helping parents and teachers promote math understanding. This I believe she will truly miss. However, moving into this new phase in her life will definitely afford Dr. Marsh time to spend with her 3 children and her dogs, as well as being able to travel and spend time with friends and dive into her loves of reading and working logic puzzles. We here at CVA want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Dr. Marsh; she will truly be missed. Enjoy all that life has to offer and know that you will always be considered part of the Carbon Valley Academy family!

“Take Back Your Power” Viewing Letter to the Editor: Hello to all my fellow residents of the Tri-Town area. As promised in the March issue of the Consumer Report, I have the details finalized for the FREE public viewing of the movie Take Back Your Power. This is a very powerful movie addressing the harmful effects of our world of wireless technology. It focuses on the health issues, fire hazards and the privacy intrusions that come with the implementation of Smart Meters and the Smart Grid. It also has a section on the wireless hazards of cell towers and cell phone technology. The viewing will be held at the Carbon Valley Rec. Center, located in Frederick at 701 5th St., the date of May 19th, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Since seating is limited to approximately 80 people, those who have RSVP’d will get priority seating. Please RSVP at ljinc05@yahoo.com by May 12th. It’s my great pleasure to have Virginia Farver confirmed for the night as well. Her powerful story is featured in the film. I would like to share with you some additional information that has been uncovered since my last article in March. It appears that the Town of Frederick DOES have an opt-out policy in place for those who are aware of the hazards of the Smart Meters and do not wish to have these devices on their homes. So if you don’t have one right now, you aren’t required to accept one, and if you currently do have one, you can have it removed and replaced with an analog meter. This information was chosen to NOT be shared with the residents in any public forum and the town didn’t feel that it was of importance to relay this to the citizens of Frederick. Apparently if you never attended the December 2014 town meeting you won’t know anything about it. Here is the reply I received from the town: “Regarding the opt out option, we do not plan to make any sort of formal announcement as it was addressed and passed back in December of last year.” The town has decided to implement a $7.50 per month charge for those wishing to optout of the Smart Meter program. There are countless cases of a similar fee that is charged where this is considered “extortion” and even some utility companies have realized this and are refunding the opt-out fees. According to the TOF the reason for the fee is, they now have to send out a meter reader to physically

Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District has Lift Off Established in 1983 and serving the Carbon Valley communities of Dacono, Firestone and Frederick, the Carbon Valley Park and Recreation D i s t r i c t (CVPRD) has officially launched their new website at www.cvprd.com. The new site will allow users to access more detailed, up to date information on all aspects of the district and information pertaining to Carbon Valley community events. New features include: the ability to register for information via email or text messages, message alerts for cancellations and more community event information as well as more detailed information about sport registration, fitness classes, gymnastics information, online Activity Guide, and upcoming trips for the senior center. Bess Loveless, CVPRD’s Communication and Community Outreach Coordinator notes that the new website will offer more opportunities for feedback and communication with the public. “Along with the new logo and social media efforts, we think this site will help us connect with a larger audience in a much more effective way.” We encourage everyone to explore the new site at www.cvprd.com.

read your meter. So let me put this in terms of common sense. For the last 100 years or so, there was a meter reader that would go out every month to read our meters and not charge a separate fee for that service, (it was included in the overall service) now that the work load will be reduced by, oh, 95% they feel it is only appropriate to charge a fee for reading about 5% of the meters. It sounds like the people who are opting out are going to be penalized for not wanting a Smart Meter on their property. Doesn’t sound fair to me. (I can see someone saying “come on, play ball”) According to Findlaw.com the definition of extortion is as follows: “Most states define extortion as the gaining of property or money by almost any kind of force, or threat of 1) violence, 2) property damage, 3) harm to reputation, or 4) unfavorable government action.” With that said, I do encourage the town to review their policy on the opt-out fee and see if this is really in the interest of the TOF and its residents. Like I said in the last article, we are all in this together. In response to last month’s article response about the exposure to radiation levels: The World Health Organization has categorized RF/EMF radiation as a class 2B possible cancer causing carcinogen. It was addressed in Lyon, France in May of 2011. A class 2B carcinogen also has classified DDT, Lead and Gasoline under the same category, and we all know how good those item are for us. Here is just one of the dozens of links on the subject: http://electromagnetichealth. org/electromagnetic-health-blog/iarc-rfcarc/. There is also current legislation and petitions to classify it as a class 2A probable carcinogen. We have only just begun to understand the harmful effects of radiation on our bodies, as public wireless devices have only been in existence for maybe 25 years. With this comment I am referring to the things we expose ourselves to on a daily basis (cell phones, cell towers, wireless phones, wifi routers, smart meters and the smart grid.) I am only suggesting that we take a closer look into the things we surround ourselves with and further self-educate, before we make decisions we all might regret at a later date and our kids will end up paying the price for our conveniences and self-indulgences. Hope to see you May 19th, Lawrence Jenkins, Frederick

“This letter is to provide another update regarding Frederick’s expressed intent to acquire the New Town electrical system from the United Power cooperative. I was able to learn at the United Power annual meeting on April 15th that United Power considers the equipment inventory essentially complete and they are continuing to work on the rather substantial task of valuing that inventory in accordance with the State Statutes prescribed methodology. United Power did express concern that the Town has still not advised them of the Town’s planned distribution system for the New Town electrical loads when they take it over. As noted in the past, United Power’s position is that they must agree that the distribution configuration adequately separates the part of the system the Town is taking over from the remaining United Power system for safety and reliability reasons. They believe that whatever configuration is agreed to could affect the equipment inventory. I was also able to learn from the Town that they expect to let a contract for the valuation of the equipment inventory during the week of April 20th. The Town does not believe they received an equipment inventory accurate enough to base a contract on until February 27th of this year. Regarding United Power’s concern about the Town’s distribution system, the Town, while recognizing that they must insure that their separation plan protects both the Town’s system and United Power’s system, does not believe they need United Power’s approval of their plan. The acquisition process as described on the Town website notes that if an acquisition price cannot be agreed to, Colorado law provides that a court may determine the price. Given the nature of the ongoing valuation processes, that certainly appears likely, and given the differing positions regarding adequate separation of the distribution systems that question could end up in court also. I am just hopeful that before long the Town Trustees will put a stop to this whole acquisition process and then this will all be of no consequence. I do want to share that the United Power annual meeting was quite enjoyable and would urge all to attend next year. The reports to the members by the CEO and the

President of the Board of Directors, among others, were very informative. As has been stated in my previous updates, United Power is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, owned by its customer-members and governed by the member-elected board of directors. I found one portion of the President’s report which addressed the early days of United Power, then known as Union Rural Electric, particularly interesting. He addressed the excitement and anticipation that must have been felt by members in those early days, over seventy years ago, when their homes first received electric power. I can relate to that because I well remember the time, 65 years ago, and the excitement, when we first got electricity in our home. We lived on a farm in Oklahoma, a number of miles from the nearest town. A local electric cooperative similar to United Power managed to run lines to our area and hook us and our neighbors up. I was 12 years old and up to that time I had read and studied by light of a kerosene lamp. According to the United Power President’s account, the first poles were set and transformers and lines installed by the members themselves. In our case, the cooperative had construction crews that did that but, of course, we did have to get our houses wired to receive the power. A local electrician did most of the house wiring in our area but one of my brothers and I helped him, crawling around and pulling cables through ours and several of our neighbors’ attics. It was good experience and affected us both. My brother, who is now deceased, after 4 years as a Navy electrician, spent over 40 years with an electric utility, starting as a lineman and working into a managerial position. I learned practical electrical theory in the Navy on my way to becoming an electronics technician. I served 22 years in the Navy, during which time I was blessed to be able to earn a bachelors degree in engineering and spend three years in graduate study at MIT where I obtained two advanced engineering degrees, I spent another 20 years in the GE marine and industrial gas turbine business. The GE gas turbine engines provided the power for many electrical power generation facilities in both simple cycle and combined cycle configurations so I am rather familiar with that part of the electrical power business too.“ Carl Brady, Frederick

Have you been seeing a decline in organic reach on your business page? Don’t worry. Yes, there are algorithm changes, but the advantages of remaining active on Facebook for business reasons are still strong! The cost to reach 1,000 people on Facebook is a mere $0.25 compared to $2.75 on Google, or $32 for a newspaper ad! Photo posts are still the runaway winner in terms of both organic reach and engagement. I recommend you share this message on your page: “Facebook has changed their algorithm and you might be missing some of our posts. But there’s an easy fix: Click on this page. Under “LIKE” click “Get notifications”. (You need to be on a computer not a mobile device to do this step.)” If you use a picture with that screen shot, it will have better results. The Truth Behind Spring Allergies Family medicine physician, Bruce Martin, MD, offers a new perspective about spring allergies by Bruce Martin, MD he delight of warmer temperatures and budding plants in spring is wonderful (except of course for the diehard skier). Unfortunately for some, spring also brings the inconvenience of allergy symptoms. Although seasonal allergies are common, they vary greatly from individual to individual and from season to season. Most allergy symptoms that occur are actually the reaction of your own immune system to inhaled proteins in the dust. If you are sensitive to dust, you are likely responding to a chemical element of the dust, a small insect (a mite, cleverly named a “dust mite”) or plant products, such as pollen that accompany the dust. Contrary to popular belief, there are actually no good or bad allergy years because generally, the severity of your allergy symptoms is entirely determined by your own immune system’s response. The immune system is an amazingly complex entity. To determine specific allergies, you can get a formal skin test; however, skin tests usually only reveal the cause of an allergy symptom about half the time, and the process can be expensive. Most people try to initially control their allergy symptoms with affordable, overthe-counter medications before resorting to expensive and lengthy, formal allergy testing. Symptoms of spring allergies are actually a good reminder that we are lucky to have a healthy, if somewhat overly zealous, immune system. Although spring allergies may feel like a nuisance, it is truly remarkable how they are actually our immune system protecting us against foreign protein matter that can be harmful to body functions. So, the next time you reach for a tissue because of a spring time sneeze attack, remember to be thankful for both your competent and active immune system, and the coming of the warmer days and spring blossoms. Here’s to wishing you good health this spring. Get out and enjoy your health!

T

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Protect your Kid’s Skin from the Sun

A

s summer approaches, it is very important to remember to protect your children from the sun. Dr. Holly Paugh, a Pediatric Dermatologist at Dermatology Center of the Rockies, recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to provide protection against skin cancer and early signs of skin aging. With so many different sunscreens available, it is often hard to choose one and the labeling can be confusing. The best sunscreen to use is one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. Sunscreens containing mineral ingredients with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide very good protection and are less likely to cause irritation. They are also good for young children who often have sensitive skin. One of the biggest problems we see with sunscreen use is applying much less than the recommended amount. You should use enough sunscreen to evenly cover all areas of exposed skin. In addition, sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours and applied after swimming or exercise. If your kids plan to be in the water, look for a sunscreen that specifically says water resistant. While sunscreen is helpful in avoiding sun damage, it does not provide complete protection. Other strategies to prevent sun damage are wearing sun protective clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating and broad brimmed hats, seeking shade when possible and avoiding sun between 10-2 when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Visit DermatologyoftheRockies.com for more sun protection tips or make an appointment at 303.532.2810 to see one of our Dermatologists.

Preparing For Summer

I

f there is one thing that parent’s and kids alike look forward to, it is summer! It is exciting to think about all of the outdoor activities that you can participate in. There is more time to sleep in and less chores to do. Summer is the perfect time to embrace fitness and work on your nutrition. The sun rises early and stays up late to allow for more time to get that run in. The gym seems easier to access because you have more energy due to the long day light hours. Farmer’s Markets are abundant and teaming with fresh organic fruits, veggies and free range and grass fed meats. I personally feel more relaxed and ready to put the work in for good health during the summer months. I don’t put much emphasis on wearing a bikini, but I do however challenge myself with improving my overall quality of life during the

summer. I enjoy every moment that I have with my children. We spend a lot of time hiking, biking, running, paddle boarding, swimming and doing photography hikes. Kids learn how to be active by example and I am proud to be able to be a good mentor and teacher. Take the time this summer to reconnect with your family and set out to do some new and exciting activities. Plan your vacations with some physically active excursions. Make a scrapbook or journal to document your adventures and add pictures of beautiful farmer’s market finds! This will help give your kids a positive memory about being active. Enjoy your summer!

Am I a Critical Parent?

P

arenting children is great and enjoyable thing! But is it possible, that the parent makes it harder on themselves to raise the children? I think anyone who is a parent knows we often make parenting more challenging than it needs to be. One of the ways that we can make parenting harder than what it needs to be, is to be an overly critical parent. But often we do not see that we are being critical. Sometimes it is hard to see the areas that we struggle with, and especially in our parenting. Being a critical parent sometimes is the hardest thing to see, because the child that you are being critical towards often has perfectionist mentalities. This child has a tendency to “look” like a good child. They have a tendency to do everything right and work hard to make it right. In turn, it makes the critical parent feel like they are actually being a good parent. When all is said and done, this critical parenting can have monumental repercussions later on in life.

Signs of Being a Critical Parent 1. Your child procrastinates at everything she does. 2. Your child draws a picture, then tears it up, telling you it is no good. 3. Your child redoes his homework several times 4. A simple half hour homework assignment takes four hours. 5. Nothing is ever good enough 6. You redo projects your child does (for example, you make the bed he already made). If these are signs that you see in your children, it is very possible that you are being an overly critical parent. Often we

want to blame the children for the issues that they are having. It is easy just to tag the child in this situation as being a perfectionist. Although that child is acting like a perfectionist, it may be that the parent is creating an unhealthy atmosphere for the child causing them to have perfectionist attitude. What may really be happening is that the child is sinking in criticism. Dr. Kevin Leman says that if the father has a critical eye and is very demanding and exacting, there is a good chance the parent could “destroy” his children. Those children who grow up under a very perfectionist, critical father are often hard on themselves and put themselves in situations that aren’t healthy as they look for the love, affirmation, and acceptance they didn’t get from their own parents. Often the child grows up and marries, and the child’s spouse will pay the price for that child’s criticizing parenting. If this is the scenario, it may be a blaring signal of being a critical parent.

The Solution for Criticism Remember this, the Bible doesn’t promise peace to those who dwell on the faults of others! It says that the Lord will keep them in perfect peace, whose minds are stayed on Him! (Isaiah 26:3) . The more that we allow God to control our mind and thoughts, the more we will toward the Lord for direction. Our perfect peace despite our pasts is solved through the peace of the Lord. God gives us the encouragement to keep our mind on Him.

Keeping you in the game.

Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Beyond Pain

P

eople come into the office for treatment of various conditions, especially pain. For example, discomfort, pain and misalignment at the upper and midback, especially “between or under the shoulder blades” is very common... Why? Is it posture, work related, stress related, emotional, everything we can possibly think of? Within the context of Chinese medicine, pinpointing the source does not matter because every aspect of an individual’s being is taken into account in order to provide thorough treatment. In addition to the myriad of muscles located throughout the upper, midback and scapula/shoulder, there are channels(or meridians) that travel through the area. These channels are quite like waterways that interact, influence and flow into one another, beginning superficially just below the skin and plunging down deeply to the level of the organs. The 12 main channels are named after each organ. In Chinese medical terms, the organs are not only responsible for function, as we know it in Western medicine, but they are also responsible for our mental, emotional and spiritual well being. For example, each point along the spine correlates with

an organ, or influences a functional aspect of the body, such as blood and bones. In the upper to mid-back, there are access areas to the Lung, Pericardium and Heart, and their other associated aspects. Here are the roles of the correlated organs and channels that mingle with the muscle tissue and vertebrae, in relation to the upper to mid-back, scapula and shoulder: • Lung: Ability to appropriately grieve, Ability to receive and let go physically and emotionally, Ability to see the value of things; • Pericardium: ‘The Heart Wrapper’ functionally protects the heart; Ability to know when to protect ourselves, and know when it is unnecessary; • Heart: Ability to appropriately feel and express joy, and appropriately interact within society; • Small Intestine: Functionally, separates nourishment from waste; Ability to separate our different roles in society; • Gall Bladder : Ability to carry out plans, make strategies and delegate, Ability to balance being too rigid with being overly flexible; By nature, Chinese medicine is different because it simultaneously addresses these aspects of ourselves along with the pain itself. So, people often benefit far more from this health care than they had originally expected.

Donna Anne Nolan April 28,1945 - March 25, 2015

D

onna Anne Nolan, 69, of Firestone, Colorado, passed away on March 25, 2015, surrounded by her husband and children at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO. Donna was born on April 28, 1945 in Norwalk, CT to William L. and Anna Mae Peden. She was the youngest of eight children and is survived by her sister, Marilyn Oravez of Norwalk, CT. Donna married William (Bill) E. Nolan on January 2, 1963 in Norwalk, CT where they made their home until relocating to Colorado in 1971. She is survived by her husband, three children, William E. Nolan Jr. (Rose) of Keensburg, Shari Minter (Rene) of

Firestone, and Lisa Nolan of Frederick; four grandchildren, Branden (Kaitlyn) Minter, Courtney Minter, Clinton and Savannah Nolan; and two great-grandchildren, Payten and Colton Minter. Donna’s greatest joy in life was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her dogs. Donna resided in the Tri-town area for over 30 years; she worked for King Soopers as a meat wrapper and checker until 1995. After her retirement she enjoyed her travels to AZ and CA with her husband in their RV. Donna had a natural talent for crafts including: painting, ceramics, and tole painting. She also loved to play

cribbage and having get-togethers with her friends. Donna enjoyed helping people, had many close friends and will be greatly missed by all. A private interment was held with family at Foothills Garden of Memory on April 18, 2015. A celebration of life in Donna’s honor will be held May 2, 2015 at the American Legion Hall in Firestone, CO from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

Katherine “Katie” Sanger April 27,1928 - April 19, 2015

K

atherine “Katie” Sanger passed away peacefully at Exempla Good Samaritan hospital April 19,2015, surrounded by her beloved family. Born, Gertrude Katherine Goetz in Brighton Colorado, she was a farmer’s daughter. She met the love of her life, Jake Sanger and they married on May 6, 1950. They moved to Erie in 1969, where they lived out their lives together. Katie loved to cook and worked at Skelly’s restaurant and Foothills Care Center in the kitchen. She retired in 1988 from HEAD Sports but continued to cook her family’s favorites - homemade dumplings and noodles, as well as everyone’s favorite pie for each holiday celebration!

Caregiver Burnout

She was an avid Bronco and Rockies fan, loved to play Bingo, travel up the hill to Black Hawk, and lottery tickets were always a special part of her birthday! Her flower and vegetable gardens were amazing as she truly had a green thumb. She loved all these “things” but nothing meant more to her than her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No matter how she felt or what was going on around her, they could always bring a smile to her face! She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jake, and children Charlotte and Joseph, 6 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by her children Jake Sanger Jr., Kathy Sanger, Phyllis Peterson (Randy), Don Sanger, Ray Sanger, Jim

Sanger (Kim), George Sanger (Julie), and Sherry Renken (Troy). Grandchildren: Charlotte (Cobin ) Bassett, Krystal (Michael) Zamudio, Kristin Peterson, Clifford (Ashley) Sanger, Denise Sanger, Jake(Sara) Sanger, Austin Brunz, Trevor, Tyler, Tegan and Andrew Renken. Greatgrandchildren: Hali, Hannah, Justus, Jaikah, Ziva, Shelby, and two new arrivals due in August. We celebrated Katie’s life on Sunday April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Johnson Memorial Building at the corner of Cheesman and High Streets in Erie, Colorado. Graveside service was held Tuesday April 28 at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. at Staging Area B.

Caregiver Statistics Family caregivers provide 20 hours of unpaid in-home care per week 87% of caregivers do not get enough sleep Caregivers with declining health who report depression—91% Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient can shorten a person’s life by 4-8 years

Preventing Burnout The most important step you can take to combat burnout is to closely monitor your stress level. Prolonged high stress hinders the immune system’s ability to fight disease and can lead to fatigue, depression and eventually, burnout. The following strategies can help relieve stress:

Caregiver Burnout Burnout can be defined as “a debilitating psychological condition brought about by unrelieved stress”. Because burnout may not be readily identified the same way a sore throat or rash may be identified, caregivers may deny or simply be unaware of the warning signs. Signs of burnout include:       

Feeling pessimistic and dissatisfied Decreased energy or emotional exhaustion Withdrawing from friends or social interactions Loss of interest in work or hobbies Increased use of alcohol or medication to relax Becoming impatient, irritable or argumentative Lower resistance to illness

Join a caregiver support group. A support group is a safe place for you to share experiences and frustrations with other caregivers as well as seek advice.

"We appreciate your encouragement and prayers as we rebuilt from our devastating fire. Stop by to say hello and see our new building, amenities and services we provide."

You are not alone...

Set reasonable limits. You can’t be a successful caregiver if you give until there is nothing left. Be realistic about how much time and energy you can devote to caregiving. Pull back if you feel that you’re surpassing this threshold.

Phone (24 hrs.) 303-776-2313

Make time in your schedule for activities you enjoy. Incorporate “me” time into your schedule. Listen to music, garden, cook, go see a movie, or just walk the dog. Think about activities you’ve done in the past that you found enjoyable and try to find the time to schedule them in. Reach out for help.
