JT’s Barber Shop for a Man’s Man and Boys Too! By Kelly Fordyce Martindale
T
he grand opening of JT’s Barber Shop, in September of 2012, was one of the most memorable days for owners Jeremy and Suzanne Mock. “The support from the community and the City of Dacono was remarkable,” they said. And that support has continued ever since. JT’s Barber Shop has grown consistently for the past two and a half years and has come to the point that Jeremy hired his Uncle Gene. Gene has been a barber for over fifty years and is, in fact, the person who inspired and shared his knowledge with other family members. Jeremy’s aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, mother, and father, are ALL barbers! Gene works on Saturdays when the shop is busiest. JT’s is a traditional barber shop offering a “good, old fashioned straight razor neck shave” with every haircut. Jeremy says, “If you have never had a face shave, you should get one. It’s a close shave and is very refreshing.” Speaking of refreshing, one customer, Mark Robertson says, “It’s refreshing to find an old school traditional barber who does a professional job at a reasonable price. I highly recommend him.” Traditional barber services utilize the hot towel with a shave. But some of JT’s clients are not old enough to shave yet. While Jeremy caters to the Man’s Man, males of all ages are welcome at the barber
JT's BARBER
shop. JT’s offers haircuts to men and boys at every age. Jeremy’s clients SHOPLLC are from all over; around the block in Dacono to Parker, Lyons and Greeley. “We serve clients all up and down the Front Range,” says Jeremy. He and Suzanne are grateful for their customers and always strive to show their appreciation to them personally. “Our clients are caring and compelling and they understand the value of supporting a small business,” says Suzanne. “Jeremy and I treasure that loyalty.” Suzanne has been in accounting for over twenty years and she and Jeremy had always wanted to work together. Merging his twenty plus years as a Barber with her financial expertise has proven to be a successful partnership.
The two work well together and have been married for thirteen years. They have three children, and like many Coloradans, they love the outdoors. They garden, raise chickens, camp and ride ATV’s and they love dancing. Jeremy and Suzanne look forward to this partnership for many years to come. They appreciate each other and they appreciate their clients. New clients are always welcome. If you are looking for a barber in the Carbon Valley, Lee Wheeler says, “JT’s Barber Shop is very clean. Jeremy is a nice guy and is a professional barber. I would recommend anyone to JT’s Barber Shop.” Customers can make appointments or walk in. They are located east of Colorado Blvd. in Dacono facing Highway 52 at Glen Creighton, east of Daylight Donuts in the same parking lot. 905 Carbondale Dr, Dacono, CO 80514 Hours: Tuesday through Friday 7am to 6pm Saturdays 7am to 2pm Phone: 303.833.4041 www.facebookcom/JTsBarberShopLLC

My Life Shaped Through Their Children

wo men died in December. Two men who were the fathers of six children. And those children raised children. And many are changed by the lives of those two men. And my life is forever changed because of those two men. On December 9, I looked into the eyes of my father-in-law as he left this earth. His son and his daughter held each of his hands. It was hard, yet it was peaceful. I know Jesus was with him. On December 31, my uncle was reunited with my aunt. And I believe there was rejoicing in Heaven. Because of these two men, my life is forever changed through my husband, Mike, and my cousin, Carma. Carma is the first born in our generation of cousins, nieces, nephews, etc. She’s the oldest of us all, I write with a twinkle in my eye. I’ve known her my whole life. She is the only women I know who has stayed true to the foundation of our Holy Father, leading and guiding and nurturing me along my entire walk

Letter to the Editor
Platteville Prohibits Fracking Bans & Moratoria
Frederick Electricity Update
T
T
his letter is to provide another update regarding Frederick’s expressed intent to acquire the New Town electrical system from the United Power cooperative. As I noted last month, United Power is continuing to work on the rather substantial task of valuing the New Town equipment inventory in accordance with the State Statutes prescribed methodology. I also noted that the Town expected to let a contract to do their valuation of the inventory during the week of April 20th. The Town Manager confirmed in his April 28th report that the contract has been executed and that it is expected that the valuation process will take about four months or until about the end of August. According to the acquisition process timeline on the Town’s web site, the next step after completing the valuation will be to do a business analysis of the price of the equipment and operations and maintenance in order to give an idea of the project’s viability. The Town will then communicate to the community the long term outlook for the acquisition in terms of financing and rate structures. After further analysis and community input, the Town will decide whether the Town can provide better service at cheaper rates with more reliable power than available with United Power. If so, negotiations with United Power will begin in an attempt to determine an acquisition price agreeable to both parties based on the two independent evaluations. If the parties cannot agree to
a price, Colorado law provides that a court may determine the price. Once a purchase price is established, the Town will consider issuing a revenue bond to purchase the inventory and take over operation and maintenance of the New Town electrical distribution system. As has been noted previously, given the nature of the ongoing valuation processes and the differing positions of the parties regarding adequate separation of the distribution systems, it is quite probable that an acquisition price will have to be set in court. Even if that is not required, it appears unlikely that, if the Town’s published timeline is followed, the completion of the actual purchase can be effected before the next Frederick Municipal election. That election should occur on April 5, 2016, about seven months after the expected completion of the Town’s equipment inventory valuation. One of the reasons I have heard from some Trustees for not submitting this issue to the vote of the residents is the cost of a special election. Although such cost would be minimal compared to that spent by the Town for consultants in this process, if such a question were to be added to the upcoming Municipal election ballot, the cost definitely would not be an issue. The Board should pass a resolution now placing this issue on the next Municipal election ballot.” Carl Brady, Frederick

he Town of Platteville Board of Trustees yesterday took a proactive step towards any attempts to ban any oil and gas development in the town, reiterating the critical importance of responsible oil and gas development in the local community. In a 5-0 vote (with one Trustee being absent) the Platteville Board voted in favor of the resolution, which affirms that “oil and gas development and the economic activity it generates are vital to our Town’s continued prosperity and sensible growth” and that “development provides critical resources to the Town’s schools, parks and recreation areas, libraries and other public amenities.” Various municipalities throughout Colorado have been subject to efforts to ban hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” The oil and gas industry creates thousands of local, well-paying jobs, lowers energy costs, boosts local and statewide tax revenues, and strengthens America’s energy security while reducing dependence on foreign energy sources. As a result of bi-partisan efforts, Colorado leads the nation in the most robust, comprehensive set of regulations overseeing the oil and gas industry. Mayor Bonnie Dunston of Platteville commended the Board’s decision. “The resolution passed yesterday by our Board was a bold, common-sense, and responsible move that sends a signal: ‘The Town of Platteville gets it – oil and gas is an economic lifeblood for our community,’” said Dunston. “We all want the best for our community. We all want jobs, economic development, and more
importantly – we want a safe community for our family. Our community has flourished as a result of all the direct and indirect business from the industry, and we’re doing everything we can to attract further investment and jobs” she added. The Town of Platteville is situated along the east bank of the South Platte River at the intersection of US Highway 85 and Colorado Highway 66 in Weld County. Located just fifteen miles southwest of Greeley and thirty-seven miles northeast of downtown Denver. Platteville has easy access to major business, shopping, and cultural centers and is only thirty-six miles from Denver International Airport. “We wanted to do something proactive to support an industry that provides a lot of jobs and tax dollars for our local schools, improves our property values and has many other benefits. When the price of oil comes back we hope to see additional investment and expansion by the industry because our community would love the economic benefits. We’re proud to be the first municipality in the state, and maybe the country to pro-actively tell industry and frankly all businesses that they will not be subject to some of the unnecessary and damaging measures some other cities have taken to ban safe, responsible industry practices that are highly regulated by the federal, state and local government.”~ Bonnie Dunston

Save the date now and visit our website at www.FirestoneCO.gov/4thatFirestone for all the details. As you’re out enjoying our parks and trails please remember to slow down for our children as they play. Also take a minute to thank our public works department for keeping our community clean and our roads safe. And don’t forget to give a friendly wave to our police officers on patrol while they keep a watchful eye on our community. As always, if you have a concern or an idea to make our community better, please contact me so we can begin the conversation by emailing me at psorensen@firestoneco.gov.
Due to our unnaturally rainy spring, potholes are coming up everywhere. This is because extended wet weather loosens the asphalt of any damaged area and makes it weak enough that it is no match for the traffic going over it. While dryness is key for fixing potholes, our Public Works team continues to cold patch as a temporary fix and had a count of well over 150 potholes fixed back in March! We appreciate your patience as we continue to deal with Mother Nature and all her quirks. Our flood-damaged road projects, Godding Hollow Pkwy (CR 18), Bella Rosa Pkwy (CR 20) and Wetland Loop, are all moving forward. Defalco Construction has already begun preliminary work on Godding Hollow Pkwy. At the end of this month, weather permitting, we will close a portion of the road as we as we upgrade the drainage structures that the Godding Hollow runs through. We were waiting for school to end so that we could close the road with the least amount of impact to traffic. Bella Rosa Parkway and Wetland Loop are currently out
to bid until June 8th, which is the required amount of time to accept bids. Many of you have been wondering about the building that is going up near our Public Works building. This is being built by the land owner in an attempt to provide much-needed industrial space in the area that he can then lease out. Because this landowner is aware of the current demand, he is trying the ‘build it and they will come’ philosophy. I received many calls about the recent accident that resulted in two children being injured while running to an illegally parked car at Legacy elementary school. Please do your part in keeping our community safe by following parking and speed limit regulations not only around the schools, but throughout our community, especially as the parks in our area will be busier as school lets out. If you would like me to come and meet with your group, I am happy to do so, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

Share Your Skills at Frederick’s New DIY Day Show off your how-to skills at new free community event June 13th
T
he Town of Frederick is looking for volunteers from the community and representatives from local businesses to share practical skills to put on the first ever DIY Day on Saturday June 13 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Crist Park (105 5th St.). Volunteers don’t need to be an expert – just willing to share with others an activity that they enjoy. Individuals may sign up to demonstrate anything from practicing calligraphy to tying a bow tie, tuning a guitar to decorating a cupcake, or starting a compost to making a balloon animal. Businesses may choose to highlight their services by sharing a related skill: for instance, a salon may show how to French braid hair while a bike shop may share tips for bike tune-ups. DIY Day is a partnership with the Carbon Valley Regional Library, and
will hopefully become a long-standing tradition for people to come learn new skills and get confidence to tackle new projects! At DIY Day, participants will be able to visit a variety of “How-To Stations,” where volunteers will demonstrate practical skills as well as attending more structured “classes” from partners like The Home Depot. Anyone interested in sharing a skill can sign up at www.frederickco.gov/DIYDay. “We came up with the idea for DIY Day based on what we know about Frederick residents and how they like to roll up their sleeves and get involved,” said Events Coordinator Brooke Cunningham. “We have some wonderful community partners and residents lined up to present some fun topics, but we’re still hoping to get some more variety to round out the day.”

Firestone Pediatric Dentistry Brings Multi-specialty Professionals to Firestone By Jan Sciacca hree top notch dental professionals have joined forces to bring their comprehensive care for children and adolescents to southwest Weld County and the I-25 Corridor Communities. Dr. Matthew Brady and Dr. Naomi Lane met while completing their specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital Colorado. They sustained a friendship and respect for one another’s professionalism after completing residency. Then they met Dr. David Garlock while treating mutual patients in the south Denver area. Dr. Garlock and Dr. Lane share a commonality of having lived in Guatemala while completing service trips and dental work. Dr. Brady had been treating patients in Weld County for more than a year when he recognized the community’s need for a pediatric dentist, and since Dr. Lane had friends in the area, they began to think about opening a practice in Firestone. The three doctors decided to practice together because they employ the same goals of giving each patient and family high quality, individualized care and treating each child as if he or she was their own. Firestone Pediatric Dentistry was founded, with the office opening this month in the new professional building next to Ace Hardware in Firestone, 8310 Colorado Boulevard, Suite 200. Firestone Pediatric Dentistry utilizes Board certified pediatric dentists and orthodontists to provide specialized dental care to infants, children, adolescents and those with special needs. Individualized comprehensive dental care is offered in a fun and positive environment. Nitrous oxide, conscious sedation and hospital dentistry are available. In addition, the practice offers free new patient visits for children under 2 and complimentary orthodontic consultations. A glimpse at each of the three professionals indicates that the community is fortunate to have such expertise. Dr. Brady is a graduate from California Polytechnic State University with a BS in biochemistry. He completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery at Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine, where he received the Dean’s award for his presentation on Child Abuse Awareness and recognition in the Dental Office. Dr. Brady received his commission in the US Navy and went on to complete an Advance Education in General Dentistry. While serving in Naples, Italy he was
T
chosen by the Navy to train in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Shortly thereafter, he received the status of Diplomate in the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Brady completing his residency 4 years ago. It was then that the Bradys decided to make Colorado their home because of its family friendly environment. Dr. Brady and his wife of 20 years, Jessica, have five children. Preferring to spend most of their time together, the Bradys enjoy hiking, traveling and exploring locally. They are also huge Disney fans. Having had the opportunity to see many countries throughout the world, Dr. Brady has had the opportunity to practice dentistry in Italy, England, Guam and even the Federated States of Micronesia on a humanitarian mission. Dr. Brady enjoys diving and participating in long distance swimming and triathlons. You can often see him biking or running to work and he continues to be an active Naval reservist serving his country. Dr. Naomi Lane graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and completed her pediatric dental residency at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where she served as Chief Resident. Dr. Lane is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and received the James R. Roche Award of Excellence for achieving the highest score on the qualifying exam during the Board Certification process. She is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital Colorado and serves as a consultant on the Rose Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate Team.
Dr. Lane is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Southwestern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Colorado Dental Association, and currently serves as the President of the Colorado Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Naomi traveled to Guatemala earlier this year to volunteer on a medical mission team. In addition to traveling, she enjoys golfing, skiing, biking, hiking and spending time with her husband, son and Springer Spaniel. Dr. Lane declares, “Every day I’m excited to go into the office to welcome and treat my patients. I can sincerely say I truly love what I do. This is because of the relationships I’m able to build with my patients, their families and being able to offer them care that improves their lives.” She continues, “It’s a privilege to be a participant in a day that most of us remember forever: that great day when your braces are removed and you see your brand new radiant smile!” After a year at Brigham Young University and 2 years at Portland State University, Dr. David Garlock received a Bachelor of Science and graduated summa cum laude. He then attended Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School where he graduated at the top of his class with honors. While in Dental School he spent a lot of time serving in the community. He volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, provided dental health education to children, teens and adults through various community organizations and schools and provided dentistry to the underserved children of Portland. After Dental School, Dr. Garlock’s prior achievements were
recognized by world renowned Saint Louis University Department of Orthodontics, who allocated him a spot in the residency program where he received an additional two and a half years of specialized postgraduate training in orthodontics and earned a master’s degree in dentistry. It was there that he learned to combine the art and science of creating a beautiful, balanced and healthy smile using the latest technologies and advanced treatments.
Dr. Garlock continues his education and holds positions on two separate advisory boards for two Dental Study Clubs. One is the renowned Seattle Study Club, and the other is a Local Dental Study Club. Such positions allow him to lecture, mentor and learn from many of the dental professionals in the area which he says, “Helps everyone become better, stay up to date, and ultimately take better care of our patients.” Dr. Garlock says, “If I’m not playing sports with my son Sawyer, reading books with my daughter Sydney, making my little son Palmer laugh, or spending time with my high school sweetheart and wife Lisa, you’ll find me playing or watching just about any sport.” When time permits he loves to play in city leagues for basketball, football and tennis and occasionally he plays in golf events. Dr. Garlock also loves the outdoors and enjoys surfing, mountain biking and snowboarding. Firestone Pediatric Dentistry is excited to welcome their new patients. Their phone number is 303-848-3633 and their website is Firestoneteeth.com. They accept most insurance plans, including Medicaid.

FINANCIAL FOCUS: “Step-by-Step”
Approach Can Ease Estate-planning Process
L
ike many people, you may enjoy investing. After all, it can be invigorating to put away money for your future, follow the performance of your investments and track the progress you’re making toward your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, you might be less excited about doing estate planning, dreading the perceived time, effort and cost. Yet, you can make the entire process more manageable by breaking it up into specific tasks. What are these tasks? Everyone’s needs are different, but here are a few suggestions that may be applicable to your situation: • Purchase life insurance. If something were to happen to you, would your family be able to stay in the house? Would your children be able to go to college? You should have sufficient life insurance to take care of these and other essential needs. You might hear about various “formulas” for how much insurance you should purchase, but you may be better off by working with a financial professional — someone who can evaluate your assets, goals and family situation, and then recommend an appropriate level of coverage. • Draw up your will. For most people, a will is probably the most essential estateplanning document. Regardless of the size of your estate, you need a will to ensure that your assets and personal belongings will be distributed according to your wishes. If you die intestate (without a will), your belongings will be distributed to your “heirs” as defined by state laws — and these distributions may not be at all what you had in mind. • Consider a living trust. Depending on your situation, you may need to go beyond a will when drawing up your estate plans. For example, you might want to create a living trust, which can allow your assets to go directly to your heirs, avoiding the public, time-consuming and expensive process of probate. A living trust offers other benefits, too, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn
more about this estate-planning tool. • Check beneficiary designations. The beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k), are powerful and can even supersede the instructions left in your will. So it’s in your best interests to make sure you’ve got the right people listed as your beneficiaries. Over time, you may need to update these designations to reflect changes in your family situation. • Make final arrangements. Whenever you pass away, it will be a stressful time for your loved ones. To ease their burden, consider establishing a “payable-ondeath” account at your bank, and then funding this account to pay for your funeral and related expenses. • Share your plans. The most comprehensive estate plan in the world may not be of much value if nobody knows of its existence. Share your plans with your loved ones and heirs. It’s important that everyone knows their roles in carrying out your wishes. When dealing with any estateplanning issues, you’ll want to consult with your legal and tax professionals. And by taking a step-by-step approach, you can keep the process moving forward — without feeling that you’re being overwhelmed.

Painting Cabinetry
C
abinets too light or dark? Dated? We paint a lot of kitchen and bath cabinetry as well as other built-ins and as always, paint can work wonders. As long as your doors are structurally sound painting is a great option. What your cabinetry is made from (usually wood,) and the style will dictate how long it will take to complete this task. For best results, we prefer to remove the drawer fronts and cabinet doors to take off site to be sprayed and paint the ‘boxes’ on site. Hinges and knobs will need to be removed and we recommend numbering the hinges and the doors to ensure they are hung back in the same place. Your cabinets will be ‘open style’ for the duration of the painting. Painting the insides and shelving is an option as well. Cleaning is imperative for the paint to stick and there is more than likely an invisible build up of grime and oil that must be removed. Cracks and seams have to be filled. If your cabinets are currently stained they will need to be thoroughly sanded, if not stripped. Priming and several steps of sanding, vacuuming, dusting and painting with 24 hour dry time in between is necessary for a satisfying finished look. The best types of paint to use for cabinetry depends upon whether they are wood, metal, or laminate. Different wood types and grains absorb paint at different levels. We recommend a premium 100% acrylic paint for most cabinetry. Popular custom finishes are antiquing and light distressing. The most often requested colors for kitchens cabinets and bath vanities are white, gray and light blues.

Saddle Up
Making Change Affordable
Retirement Hobby Spawns Western Saddles & Tack for Horses, Plus More By Jan Sciacca ichard Van Proosdy started the business Saddle Up in 1997 as a retirement hobby to sell western saddles and tack for horses, horse accessories, and to consign used saddles and tack. He has loved horses all of his life and was looking for a way to stay involved with them during retirement. The business prospered and his daughter Danna Golden started working full time with him in 2009. Recently Danna has become the new owner. In addition, she employs two locals on staff. In addition to the retail side of Saddle Up, services include: on and off saddle fittings to ensure a proper fit for the horse and leather repair. Although Danna loves building relationships with customers and educating then on the importance of saddle fit for the safety and comfort of the horse and themselves, her best memories are of getting to know her father better by being able to work alongside him. Danna’s says her specialty has always been finance and marketing. She shares, “I grew up around horses, but it’s been a while
R
since I’ve been “in the saddle”. Over the last six years my dad, along with trainers, customers, research, and the horses themselves have taught me so much! I can now use my finance, marketing, and horse skills to help the community!” In addition to Saddle Up’s products, they provide a weekly blog that covers a huge variety of horse topics. Reviews for the company are impressive. Jennifer Montgomery Varra says, “I love shopping at Saddle Up! Danna and her Dad are SO helpful and knowledgeable about tack. They have a great selection of used & new tack, and they’re willing to order specific items for you if they don’t carry them. It’s worth the 20-minute drive for me!” An online customer Kelly Webster declares, “Danna is soooo helpful!!! Even being several states away!!” Father’s Day Special includes 10% off any new saddle and 15% off training aides. Please mention this article. Saddle Up is located at 12490 County Road 1, Longmont, in a shop that is located behind the house. The store’s hours are 10am-6pm MondaySaturday, Closed Tuesday. 12pm-5pm Sunday. Evenings by appointment only. The phone number is 303.772.7821, the website is saddleupcolorado.net and the email is info@ saddleupcolorado. net. Saddle Up is also on FaceBook.

Firestone, Colorado. We teach from a child development perspective with the goal of helping each rider develop a balanced seat. Lessons with younger children or beginners involve ground lessons and lunging to allow the rider to focus on developing control and balance. As the rider advances, lessons include training in an arena and on the trail. All riders work in English tack or bareback and all riders learn about the care of horses. Tack is provided but riders must provide their own SEI approved riding helmet. Appropriate riding clothes and boots are highly recommended. One Facebook to Rule Them All?

ccording to a new State of the Media report from Pew, Facebook drives a full quarter of all Internet traffic and is one of just five companies—along with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL—that gobble up the lion’s share (61%) of all digital ad revenue. In fact, since the company began shifting its ad strategy focus from desktop to mobile platforms, it has owned 37% of all mobile ad revenue. Beyond the money and ads, Pew also reports that nearly half of adults who use the Internet say they get their news from #Facebook alone. The average American smartphone owner spends more than 42 minutes a day on Facebook. By comparison, the average visit to The New York Times website and associated apps in January of 2015 lasted 4.6 minutes. [theatlantic.com, 4/29/15 stats]

Preventing Burnout The most important step you can take to combat burnout is to closely monitor your stress level. Prolonged high stress hinders the immune system’s ability to fight disease and can lead to fatigue, depression and eventually, burnout. The following strategies can help relieve stress:
Caregiver Burnout Burnout can be defined as “a debilitating psychological condition brought about by unrelieved stress”. Because burnout may not be readily identified the same way a sore throat or rash may be identified, caregivers may deny or simply be unaware of the warning signs. Signs of burnout include:
Feeling pessimistic and dissatisfied Decreased energy or emotional exhaustion Withdrawing from friends or social interactions Loss of interest in work or hobbies Increased use of alcohol or medication to relax Becoming impatient, irritable or argumentative Lower resistance to illness

Join a caregiver support group. A support group is a safe place for you to share experiences and frustrations with other caregivers as well as seek advice. Set reasonable limits. You can’t be a successful caregiver if you give until there is nothing left. Be realistic about how much time and energy you can devote to caregiving. Pull back if you feel that you’re surpassing this threshold. Make time in your schedule for activities you enjoy. Incorporate “me” time into your schedule. Listen to music, garden, cook, go see a movie, or just walk the dog. Think about activities you’ve done in the past that you found enjoyable and try to find the time to schedule them in. Amazing Times: The Camp Where Kids Make History! By Jan Sciacca re your kids looking for something different this summer? Do you hear, “Mom, I want this summer to be different!” Perhaps Jason Zook’s camp called Amazing Times is your answer for the summer. Kids leave camp with new knowledge, new skills, a new sense of self and having had some Amazing Times! Amazing Times, which celebrates its fourth anniversary this summer, does historical reenactment for kids. This summer the theme is Vikings. Amazing Times teaches history in an exciting hands-on environment. First, kids choose a historical character. Then the kids create authentic arts and crafts using real tools to complement their choice. Once fully in character, kids are taught the battle game’s rules of engagement: types of foam weapons, the importance of safety gear and Compassionate Combat. Character traits such as honor, justice and courage are discussed and emphasized. Finally, kids travel throughout the imagined world to engage in games of discovery and conquest. The foam weapons, shields and t-shirts are theirs to keep and enjoy, as are all the historical facts and mythological stories they learned. Although Amazing Times, is based in Firestone, the historical reenactment summer camps are held in local Longmont public parks. The camps are for kids 6-16 years old. Camp runs Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm. This summer Viking Camp will

be held June 1-5, June 8-12 and July 6-10. Amazing Times owner Jason Zook is married to Sarah Vaughan Zook and they have two sons. He currently teaches middle school history at Imagine Charter School in Firestone. He taught third grade for five years and fourth grade for one. He loves learning, teaching, making “stuff ” and all things “geeky.” Jason recalls a time when he was very young and his dad took me to see The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn. The theater was a historical landmark with a shimmering marquee. People were dressed in costumes. As they entered the theater, Jason saw that the walls were decorated with elaborate carvings painted gold. The seats were plumply padded and covered in red velvet. Thick curtains swept open to reveal the large silver screen. Then the movie began. At the end, there was
an indescribable feeling in Jason’s chest. He recounts, “I thought I might burst. I believed I could be, no wait, I was Robin Hood.” The next day he fashioned a bow from a branch and some kite string. Then he was off, with a couple merry friends, slinging imaginary arrows and righting pretend wrongs throughout the neighborhood. He had been resourceful, imaginative and heroic. He had never been happier. As an adult, he wondered, “What if that feeling could be duplicated?” As an educator, he wondered, “What if I could teach in a truly extraordinary way?” The kid in him had all sorts of questions, “What if kids could feel that way not just after a movie, but for days on end? What if kids had access to real costumes? What if kids made better toy weapons because someone showed them how? What if kids had lots of friends to play with? What if kids got to feel
What Is All the HYPE About Coupons? By Sheila Rollins
It
seems like everywhere you look, there is a new website, news story, app to use, or blog written about coupons. There is so much information out there, it can be hard to know where to find reputable sources. You might wonder, is the coupon printer software safe? Where can I get coupons? What apps are there? You might even think couponing looks like too much work. My favorite local blog to follow is BargainBlessings.com. Jennie and her team are a hardworking group of honest and ethical couponers that takes most of the hard work upon their own shoulders. In addition to some basic how-to and coupon policies, you can also find coupon matchups to all local stores! These matchups will show you what’s on sale at each store, the price, and where to find a coupon for that product. She highlights in RED her top deals of the week. Paper coupons can be obtained by getting a subscription to your local Sunday paper. The most coupons are found in the Denver Post. Subscriptions make it easier to get your paper on a weekly basis and are cheaper than buying a paper at the store. You can also print coupons from several websites. They will ask you to install a printer plugin, but this is completely safe. This plugin is necessary to verify your computer, in order to keep within the manufacturer’s print limits. Most coupons allow for 2 prints per coupon per computer. The most common websites include www. smartsource.com, www.coupons.com, www. redplum.com, www.mambosprouts.com, and www.hopster.com. In addition to paper coupons, both King Soopers and Safeway have digital
coupons that you can load to your card. These digital coupons can be quick and easy, and are loadable from their website or the app for your smartphone. The pros of these digital coupons are there is no clipping involved and no newspaper to buy. The cons of these digital coupons, are that most of the time (unless otherwise noted) they can only be used once. If you needed 3 boxes of cereal, the coupon would only deduct one time. Another con is these digital coupons do not double. Paper coupons at King Soopers and Safeway double up to $1, every day! There are several phone apps that offer discounts on items that you buy. These apps can be used in addition to the store sales and paper coupons. Most of the apps will require you to take a photo of the UPC and receipt for item verification. Some apps will send your rebate automatically to your paypal, some will send it after you reach a certain amount, and others will send you a paper check. Some popular apps include Ibotta, Checkout 51, Snap by Groupon, BerryCart, Shopmium, Jingit, Shrink, and MobiSave. When you first start couponing, the information out there can be overwhelming. However, couponing can be very rewarding and fun to do. I love seeing my percent savings at the bottom of my receipt, knowing how I have helped save my family money. There are also so many items that can be picked up for free or close to free and donated to local food banks or homeless shelters. I encourage everyone to start small, get the basics down first, and begin to build their stockpile. It won’t be long until you start seeing savings of 50% or more every week at the checkout!

the excitement of being a hero for real? What if kids could make memories that they would never, ever forget?” The idea of Amazing Times was spawned. A fond memory Jason has of one of his camps is of a little kid age 7 swinging Odin’s foam spear in a game of Last Viking Standing. Jason recalls, “This weapon had the longest reach, defeated enemies with just one touch and the kid took out all 30 of us. It was pretty epic. “ I had Viking camp for a week and that was the best week of my life. Here Capture the Flag is even better. There are real size flags and, instead of tagging, you fight each other with swords. You make your own weapons and it’s surprisingly easy. I am definitely doing it again. Adam, age 9 I just wanted to be sure to tell you how impressed both Caleb (3rd week of camp, little guy) and I were with Viking Camp. As a Mom I was grateful for what my son experienced that week. As a kid, Caleb loved it, had tons of fun, and the extra depth that makes the camp unique resonated with him. Jolie The girls have been looking forward to your camp all year! The girls are thrilled for the adventures you have planned. Angelique Amazing Times can be reached by phone at 970.310.0624, by email at jzook@amazing-times.com or on its website Amazing-Times.com. Fitness After An Injury
W
hether you’re someone who exercises regularly or you just started, you’ll most likely deal with an injury at some point in your life, even if it’s caused by ice, a car accident, sports injury, etc. I’ve recently experienced this myself with tearing a meniscus in my knee up at a ski resort this spring. Many people are unaware that fitness training and injury recovery work best together. After any injury you should discuss treatment options with your doctor, as they may recommend surgery and/or a brace for different activities. Other factors that will have an impact on how quickly you return to regular activity include age, your fitness level prior to the injury, and the length of time since the injury occurred. You’re often able to continue fitness training while healing from an injury by staying active and working the parts of the body that are not injured. You’ll need a short time to let the injured body part decrease in swelling , then you’ll usually start slow with careful stretching and isometric exercises of the injured area. Too often the tendency is to stop exercising all together once an injury occurs, and this will just prolong things. The fastest way to return to normal activity is to give your body the time it needs to rebuild its strength and conditioning by doing a little more each day and keeping the rest of your body in shape. The goal will be to gradually return to
Page 13
or near your previous level of fitness without overdoing it and you need to listen to your body. You’ll be testing the injured area as you work your way up by increasing time and intensity of exercise that puts pressure on the injured area. Given the right conditions, your body will recover in time. For me personally, the progress with my knee has gone quickly and I’ve been able to be physically active again. With my past experience of being a therapist in a hospital and currently a personal trainer, the doctor was confident that my own therapy and training would help it recover along with me eating healthy nutrition from the inside. Here you see a picture of Team Time For Change Fitness Group as some of us participated in the Shape Diva Dash in Lyons, CO on May 2nd (this was six weeks after my knee injury). This is a 5K race with obstacles and everyone did an amazing job. For many of the ladies this was their first racing event, and after joining my fitness groups they felt prepared to finally say yes and they had a blast. If you’ve experienced an injury in the past and want to return to being active and fit again, then consider working with a personal trainer that will have an understanding of your condition and work with you and your doctor. I can provide a custom training program that will help get you back to the fitness level you want by making modifications as you progress. Please contact Tracy Rewerts at the information below.

Building creative partnerships & developing lasting relationships in order to grow business in the Carbon Valley area.
Letter from the Director Hello Carbon Valley:
Has it really been a month since I stepped into the office of Executive Director of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce? So much has been going on in the chamber I hope you have not missed any of it! At the April Business Luncheon held three days after I joined the Chamber, Dr. Don Haddad talked to us about the state of the St. Vrain School District, how the district is growing and the new schools that are being planned for the Carbon Valley area. The business luncheons are held the 3rd Thursday of each month. On May 7th we had the pleasure to be the guest of Encana Oil and Gas at their new location on the Frontage Rd for our May Business After Hours (the first Thursday of each month). There was a great turnout with a lot of networking happening. The food was catered by Food Stuff, Inc. and it was excellent, the tours were educational, and everyone told me they had a great time. Thank you Encana for opening your beautiful building and welcoming us in for a wonderful evening.
Then on Friday, May 8th I had the pleasure of visiting the Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build Week in Dacono. The women helping build the new house were from all walks of life and did not care that it had been raining all week and would more than likely rain on them sometime during the day. They were there to help another woman build a home to raise her family in that she could afford and call her own. Thank you to Linda Allour from Daylight Donuts for donating two dozen donuts for the workers. It was greatly appreciated by everyone at the build site! I also had the pleasure on May 13th of being in the audience at the BizWest Northern Colorado Mercury 100. They honored the fastest growing 100 privately owned companies at the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse. It was very educational and I applaud each and every company for all of their hard work last year. Then May 14th I was a guest of the Inn Between of Longmont for their annual meeting and fundraiser “Celebrating Victories”.
On May 21st Anadarko Petroleum sponsored the May business luncheon at Saddleback Golf Club. Two students from the area, one from Frederick High School and one Home Schooled, were each presented with a $500.00 scholarship from the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Then we heard an update on Anadarko from Mike Tryggestad who has been in the Oil and Gas industry for 15 years and with Anadarko for four. Join us for our next Business After Hours at Premier Member Credit Union on Thursday, June 4th. Enjoy Georgia Boy’s BBQ while networking with fellow businesses and learn about the merger of two successful credit unions. Then on Saturday, June 6th everyone is invited to the 2nd Annual CO Craft Beer Roundup in Crist Park in Frederick. Purchase your tickets in advance at http://www.imbibe-events. com/event/colorado-craft-roundup/ or contact Julia Davis at the chamber office julia@carbonvalleychamber.com or 303833-5933. There will be Beer, Food, Music, Tasting glasses, Event T-shirts, and ride the Mechanical Bull. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Roundup!

Consider All of Your Options for Your Soon-to-Be First Grader
Do
you have a kindergartener moving to first grade in the 2015-2016 school year? There are so many options and making the best decision for your kid is incredibly important. If you’re weighing your options, consider contacting Imagine Charter School to learn more about the opportunities available for your child. Living in Colorado, you have choices when it comes to your child’s education. There are many options with regards to education today including traditional public schools, private schools, and charter schools. According to the Colorado League of Charter Schools (coloradoleague. org), charter schools are “unique public schools available tuition free to students across the state without special entrance requirements. Charter schools have flexibility to be innovative, entrepreneurial, self-governing, and yet are held accountable for student and operational performance.” Imagine Charter School at Firestone capitalizes on the ability to be innovative by working toward shaping the hearts and minds of students by providing them with a classical, core knowledge curriculum that is academically rigorous and content rich, a safe environment in which character is modeled and promoted, and a community in which trusting relationships are built. First graders are no exception. They blossom from the focused instruction in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, character, and much more. Students in first grade continue their growth in reading including decoding and comprehension. They learn to write quality sentences leading to well written paragraphs. They grow in their number sense and math problem solving strategies. And, they get the opportunity to learn about the human body, geology, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, the American Revolution, and so much more. First graders at Imagine Charter School do all this learning in an accepting and loving environment that reinforces positive character traits such as compassion, forgiveness, respect, responsibility, and friendship. Teachers truly are focused on shaping every student’s heart and mind. Here are what a few first graders wrote about their first grade year at Imagine Charter School: “My favorite part of first grade is PE because it is fun. I like it because I get exercise.” –Drew “My favorite part of first grade is learning about Mayan civilizations and learning about math.” – Payton “I love first grade because I make new friends and have an awesome adventure every day. There are a lot of fun things to learn about in first grade and the teachers are very nice.” – Madelynn “I love my school.” – Alivia “A thing that I like about first grade is Daily 5 because we get to read and reading is my favorite. Another awesome thing that is that we get to learn how to write a paragraph. I also like learning about bodies in science.” – Emma If you would like to know about Imagine Charter School, please contact them at 303-772-3711 or email deena. kicera@imagineschools.com.

H
igh student is that they are too old for kid activities but too young for a job. What is a young man or young lady between the ages of 12-16 supposed to do? LIFE Fellowship of Frederick has been working hard to provide the answer to this question through a program designed to match the efforts of the most energetic within our community with those who are most in need. “Youth in the Community” began in the summer of 2013 with the goal of helping young teens in the Carbon Valley area invest their time in a worthwhile cause instead of wasting time in front of a digital device. Since its inception, the teens of YITC have worked together to serve many of Carbon Valley’s senior, disabled, and distressed population in addition to local municipalities. The typical day for a YITC participant is divided into 2 parts – Work Hard and Play Hard. Teens will be divided into teams and sent throughout the community to pre-screened service opportunities under adult supervision. Each crew will work for approximately 4 hours. Upon returning to LIFE Fellowship, the teams will clean up and enjoy a prepared lunch together. After lunch the group departs to enjoy some fun at a number of area attractions. In the past, we have enjoyed Boondocks, The Bay and our own Amazing Race. The week concludes with a 2 night camping trip that will include activities like jet skiing and rappelling. The $75 registration fee covers all food, recreation, and transportation costs. If you have a student who would like to participate, visit LifeFrederick.org and find the “Youth in the Community” page. There you can find video from the 2014 program, additional program details, and the opportunity to register. We are also looking for service opportunities. If you could benefit from the efforts of the YITC program, please contact Lonnie Espinoza at 303-808-1343. LIFE Fellowship of Frederick is located at 451 Oak Street in downtown Frederick.

Another Helping from Betty Louise
Embarking on another writing adventure is both challenging and exciting. Writing devotionals has been my heart’s desire for quite some time. When the opportunity came my way I seized the moment and ran with it. Some of my devotionals will include material from my column, “As I See It” that appears in the Longmont Daily Times-Call every Sunday. I look forward to sharing ‘another helping’ of God’s love with you each month. You can contact me at begeheath690@aol.com. Your comments are always welcome.
Alligators In The Bathtub
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) NLT The story is told that Gracie Allen, popular comedienne in the 1940’s, received a small, live alligator as a gag. Not knowing what to do with it, she placed it in her bathtub and then left for an appointment. When she returned home, she found a note from her housekeeper that read: “Dear Miss Allen: Sorry, but I quit. I don’t work in houses where there is an alligator. I’d a told you this when I took on, but I never thought it would come up.” Often when something unexpected suddenly happens in our life we throw up our hands in despair. Unexpected surprises tend to throw a monkey wrench into our daily schedule and we think we just can’t deal with it. This is when we need to remember that God always has a Plan B for us. It’s his way of providing a safety net for our lives. We shouldn’t allow having an ‘alligator in the bathtub’ throw us for a loop. Although God’s surprises can sometimes be mistaken as difficulties, he knows when we need an extra loving touch. Interruptions, surprises, and miracles happen every day to someone, somewhere; even to you and me. We just need to be still long enough to recognize them.

Monarch Preschool New Area Preschool Focuses on the Whole Child By Jan Sciacca onarch Preschool, LLC, a new preschool in Firestone located at 10346 Bedford St and scheduled to open August 24, will focus on developmentally appropriate teaching that focuses on the whole child. Although the preschool is new, the owner and lead teacher, Colleen Wildenhaus, is opening Monarch Preschool with a wealth of educational and classroom experience. She spent 10 years as a full-time kindergarten teacher, allowing her to understand what a child needs prior to beginning school in order to be successful. She also spent a combined 5 years working in various preschool settings. There is current research showing that the importance of high quality, developmentally appropriate preschool leads to greater school success and life success. Colleen shares, “As an experienced kindergarten and early childhood teacher, I want to create a preschool where children are able to learn the necessary skills needed to be successful in today’s kindergarten classroom while still enjoying and experiencing the joys that come along
M
with childhood. Everything that I have done in my life, personally, educationally, and professionally, has led to me opening this school for our community.” The preschool, which is located off Birch Road, less than 2 miles east of I-25 and Exit 240 or Colorado 119) and across from Centennial Elementary School has been a work in progress for a while. Colleen spent over a year working with the Small Business Association learning the ins and outs of owning/running a business in order to understand all areas of owning and teaching a preschool. She took the time to build the appropriate business foundation, just as parents and community members need to take time to invest in young children as treasures who will glean from their experiences to be successful later in life. Colleen asserts “I understand that the first 5 years of a child’s life has a lasting impact on all years after that. It is a privilege to be a part of a young child’s life in such a significant manner.” Colleen loves the memories that children leave with her. She maintains, “I love that children see happiness in tiny moments all throughout the day. They are not jaded by reality yet, and as an educator, I can provide opportunities to increase the joy in each day.” She then continues, “I have an entire collection of funny sayings from students over the past 15 years. Kids speak honestly and it reminds me to live in the moment.”
Child Care in the Carbon Valley Area
The Wildenhaus Family
In addition to teaching young learners, Colleen also teaches education classes for Regis University. Besides classroom experience, Colleen has a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, and Master’s degree in curriculum and Instruction, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. She is the mother of a 10 year old daughter and a 7 year old son. (Wildenhaus Family, above) She is married to Richie, who is the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Erie High School. Colleen enjoys reading, baking, and traveling. Her favorite book is Wonder by AJ Palacios, her favorite dessert to make is Carmel Apple Coffee Cake, and her favorite place to travel is to Hilton Head Island, SC. The parent of a former kindergarten student shared praise for both Colleen from a parent’s view and from her daughter’s. The testimony reports, “I will be forever grateful to Mrs. Wildenhaus for my daughter, Kelly’s emotional and academic growth in Kindergarten. Kelly grew into a more confident child, under Mrs. Wildenhaus’ guidance and love.
Mrs. Wildenhaus provided the best start for Kelly’s academic career. Kelly entered first grade, self-assured and well prepared. When I told Kelly that Mrs. Wildenhaus was starting up her own school, Kelly said, “Those kids are gonna be so lucky!”, then she continued on to tell me her own memories from the classroom- the positive praise she received, the centers, writing stories with a classmate, and how much fun she had every day.” Monarch Preschool provides half day preschool classes Monday-Thursday from 9-11:45 and 12:15-3:00 for children ages 3-6 years. There are no registration fees to enroll a child. The first day of Preschool is August 24, with a back-toschool night scheduled on August 21 for all enrolled families. The St. Vrain Valley School District calendar will be followed for school days. The phone number is 720633-7808, website is monarch-preschool. com, and email is colleen@monarchpreschool.com. T
he United Way of Weld County is once again hosting its Day of Action event on June 20, 2015, and the Town of Firestone was selected as a site host for volunteers to help in the community. The Day of Action event runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteer registration directly through United Way begins on May 1 online at http://www.unitedwayw e l d . o rg / t a ke - a c t i o n / dayo f a c t i o n . The Friendly Fork Lunch The best for Seniors in Carbon Valley
Hi
Senior Friends! It’s time to encourage all of you 60 and over to come and enjoy the luncheons put on by Weld County Area Agency on Aging every Tuesday and Thursday. You do NOT have to belong to any senior center. It is a lunch provided for all seniors no matter what your life story is. The meals are good, nutritious and are prepared by University of Northern Colorado Dining Services in Greeley. Weld County Area Agency on Aging works to give you healthy meals and notates the calories, fats, etc. on their monthly menus for each total meal so that you know what you are consuming. The idea is to help Seniors with their nutrition for a suggested donation of $3 per person. A delicious salad bar has been added every Tuesday and FREE Bingo is now offered once a month also on Tuesdays. Other ideas are being considered for activities after lunch to encourage fellowship. Enjoying the company of others in our age group, sharing life experiences and
being able to contribute your knowledge and helpfulness to others is quite a plus. The program intent is to encourage Senior health, lessen stress and promote friendships. The meals are administered and served by Retired Seniors Volunteer Program personnel that want to make this a fun and healthy experience for all. Listed below are the Tuesday and Thursday menus for June as well as information on how to sign up for the meals which are served at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center at 701 5th St., Frederick in the multipurpose room at 12:00 p.m. There is plenty of free parking at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact the Site Coordinator at 303-6822369. Plan to join us soon. The volunteers look forward to meeting you! You MUST phone in the day before the lunch, before 11:00 a.m. at 303-833-3660 to reserve your lunch. Menus may be viewed online at www.weldaaa.org.

Longmont United Hospital Achieves a Perfect Rating in Surprise Laboratory Inspection
L
ongmont United Hospital’s Laboratory Services successfully renewed its accreditation with the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of an unannounced on-site inspection by CAP laboratory assessors. LUH’s laboratory achieved a perfect inspection with no deficiencies. The CAP inspectors claimed that in all the years they have been inspecting laboratories, they had never performed and inspection where there were zero deficiencies. They stated it was a pleasure to inspect a laboratory where the staff genuinely respected and enjoyed working with one another. “We have a great team here at LUH and the lab staff deserves all the credit. I truly appreciate their hard work and dedication!” said Tony Cerullo, Director of Laboratory Services, Longmont United Hospital. The evaluation assesses compliance with more than 800 standards, along with the quality of service the laboratory provides to patients. Participation in the CAP accreditation program is voluntary, but holds laboratories to higher standards than the federally mandated Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Laboratories who wish to maintain high-quality services submit to this accreditation program, which supersedes CLIA. CAP accreditation requires a biennial, unannounced on-site inspection of the facility, as well as routine laboratory proficiency testing throughout the period in which a laboratory is accredited. “Our laboratory operates with the highest standards every day; we’re always ready for inspection. “This inspection represents our first ever inspection with zero deficiencies and reflects the consistent reliable performance by our staff and our commitment to excellence,” added Cerullo. The 64 members of the laboratory staff perform more than 450,000 tests per year.

St. Brigit Episcopal Church to Celebrate Summer Solstice
St
. Brigit Episcopal Church will welcome Summer with a Solstice Celebration on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at 8:00p.m. The Summer Solstice Service is part of St. Brigit’s A’it Caol series, now entering its fourth year. A’it Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include specially designed meditation areas, reflecting the Scriptural lessons, and sacred music with an ethereal sound. In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit will mark the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, as a celebration of God’s gift of light. The Solstice Service is unique among the A’it Caol services in that all the meditation areas will be outdoors on the church grounds, including one utilizing St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth. St.
Brigit’s youth group, the Lightsiderz, will be assisting in creating the meditation areas. Older children are welcome at the service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). This reflects the belief of ancient people that the sun revolved around the earth. The Celts celebrated the Summer Solstice by building bonfires on hilltops. This tradition continues in modern-day Ireland. In Celtic Christianity the Summer Solstice came to be associated with St. John’s Day, honoring the birthday of John the Baptist, who was born six months before Jesus. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Visit www.stbrigit.org or www.facebook.com/ StBrigit for more information. Or you may contact C.J. Joplin-Jack, Community Liaison, St. Brigit Episcopal Church, at 720-460-8104.

HEALTHY
Food for the Soul Tailpipe Duet
W
hy would a pastor ever get himself tangled up in directing a car show? Not just one time, but year after year for 11 straight. This past Memorial Day was the Mead Motorheads Car Show in downtown Mead around the City Park, and we had another glorious display of vehicular eye candy for the hundreds who came to participate in it or just to see it. And there was Jim wearing his Mead Motorheads ball cap and smiling all day long. God tells his children in Proverbs 10:24b “and the desire of the righteous will be granted.” In chapter 13:12 it says “desire fulfilled is a tree of life”, and in verse 19 it says “Desire realized is sweet to the soul”. Back in Psalms 37:4 we read “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Now before any of you reading this think that following the Lord is like having your very own genie in a bottle, let me offer this bit of input- giving your life over to the Lord Jesus Christ is a commitment that always costs you something- your very life. But with that “cost” comes incredible benefits, namely eternal life when this one is over and an abundant life right here and now! Since I was younger I have enjoyed older cars. My first car (in 1964) was a 1948 Ford with an Oldsmobile engine. Then I moved on to a 1951 Ford with a flathead V8, and then a 1938 Chrysler. Marriage and family put a big dent in my old car pursuit, and all of them were sold one by one and we did the soccer-mom type vehicles common to a large load of children. Plus the demands of ministry didn’t allow time for such pleasures, although I had plenty of other blessings. But publications like Hot Rod magazine and others, plus an occasional car show, kept my head turned towards someday having another piece of vintage steel in my garage. When we moved to Delaware in 1985
I picked up a 1949 Cadillac and then a 1950 Cadillacwe had “two Cads in the yard, life used to be so hard…” Sold the ‘49 and painted the ‘50, selling it after we moved to Colorado in 1988. Then I bought a 1953 Ford pickup and put in a rebuilt 302 engine. It wore out eventually and went the way of the dinosaur. In 1995 I bought my current 1953 Ford pickup- Ford’s 50th anniversary edition. It came in blue with yellow flames on the hood and fenders. Driving it daily for 7 years took its toll, so repainting and a freshened engine were in order, along with other upgrades one can do when the kids fly the coop and you have more discretionary income. That one was in the recent car show, and my 1951 Chevy Styline will one day tour the roads instead of living at the mechanic’s garage. What is the big attraction? Those of us who love steel art also enjoy the musical quality of what we call the “tailpipe duet”that lovely sound of a purring motor coming from not one but two tailpipes out the back or out the side. And the beauty of a well-done interior and the smoothness of a beautiful paint job, along with customization to suit your fancies. Since hundreds typically attend car shows, I guess many others think the same way. Fixing up a car isn’t for everyone, but I guess some of my passion flows there. And since the Lord enabled me to gain these vehicles, He isn’t entirely opposed to such behavior- any more than He opposes fishing or hunting or going to sporting events. Each of us has our likes and dislikes, and for me it must be keeping the elderly vehicles on the road for my pleasure and the amusement of many. When you go to the movies, right before the main attraction comes on screen it says “Our feature presentation”. I guess my love of cars is “My preacher presentation”. I am blessed in this manner to bless others, so my “Rhinos rule” pickup will continue to amaze and amuse- at least me. And if you want the blessing of the Lord you need only submit your will to His, and then YOU TOO can have the desire of your heart, because your heart will then be inclined to follow His leading as He has planned for you personally. Let’s go cruisin’!
Jim Coleman pastors Abundant Life Church, 4380 Highway 66, just .3 mile east of I25 on the south side. Service starts at 10:00 am each Sunday and you are invited.

Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Gardening
T
here are many commonly known Chinese herbs that are easy to grow in our climate, if not difficult to deter! In this article we will discuss these herbs and skim the surface of their health benefits. • Scallion or Spring Onion : Helps give the immune system a boost, great to eat when feeling the onset of a cold or flu with symptoms of runny nose, nasal congestion and abdominal pain. Scallion will assist in relieving a cold by inducing sweating. • Garlic : Incredible boost for the immune system as garlic is anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. With regular ingestion or topically, garlic can help prevent influenza, colds, and many types of bacterial and fungal infections. Eat garlic regularly, raw or cooked. For topical use, cut a raw garlic clove in half and rub it on the bottom of the feet for athlete’s foot, or if you feel a cold, flu or bronchitis coming on. In general, the purple skinned garlic has a stronger action than white.
• Honeysuckle : Great at the onset of a cold with symptoms of fever, sore throat and headache. • Mint : Great for use at the onset of a cold with symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough, headache and red eyes. Also, the Liver loves mint, so it is wonderful for emotional instability, the early stages of a rash, or as a very mild detox. • Dandelion : The leaves contain beneficial amounts of Vitamin E and Omega 3 oils, serve as a detox, and are excellent for keeping the Liver running smoothly as well. It is commonly known that Mint and Dandelion are quite aggressive. Some people prefer to grow mint in a pot to keep it from overtaking a flower bed or garden. I like to grow mint where there are weeds so that the mint takes over the area instead. For Dandelion, well... instead of fighting nature, enjoy the leaves in a smoothie, or sauteed with other greens. For more details, read the full article under the Articles tab at daisylear.com. H
igh student is that they are too old for kid activities but too young for a job. Teens will be divided into teams and sent throughout the community to
pre-screened service opportunities under adult supervision.
