Frederick the Place for First Place Winners Frederick's Team Shalom Bikes Takes First Place in Race Across the West

Team Shalom Bikes, located on 6th Street in Frederick, took first place in the Race Across the West for their category of 2-man team under 50 yrs. of age! They finished the 860 mile trip from Oceanside California to Durango Colorado in 2 days, 13 hours and 25 minutes.

Angel Berdiales and Carlos Bautista, along with their crew made the grueling

trip with grace and speed. The team sponsored the Calvary Church Youth Group.

Campfires and Light Camping is one of my favorite ways to relax. The quiet and solitude seem to absorb my stress, calm my mind and relax my neck and shoulders; much like a massage. A fire at night time becomes a healing balm. The flame; flickering and bouncing and soothing.

My eyes watch, mesmerized, my mind empties.

But the light of the fire reaches only so far; sort of. If I keep my eyes on the fire and walk backwards, I can see the light for quite some distance. In fact, if I don’t look away, and if trees don’t block the view, I can go a long way from the fire and still see at least a spec of light. But if I turn to look over my shoulder, I see only darkness.

It’s weird because if I’m at the fire and turn my back and walk away, within 20-30 feet, I’ve reached the edge of light going into darkness. I can actually see where the light ends and the darkness begins. When I turn my back, the light doesn’t reach as far. It’s the same fire, the same light. But the security of the light is suppressed when I turn my back to it.

This analogy comes easy to me this morning as we recently camped for three nights. With the projects I’m working on (this and Mead’s paper, the i25 Corridors Community Magazine and helping with my daughter’s wedding), I’ve been incredibly stressed. So the short camping trip was a wonderful reprieve.

But June has been a busier month than usual and, truthfully, I’m glad it’s almost over. I have too much on my plate. Let me describe it like this…I feel like a waitress, holding above my head, a round tray about 48 inches in diameter, with filled plates,

bowls and cups stacked on top of each other resembling a pyramid about three feet tall; and I’m walking in spiked heels on a cobblestone road. It’s very difficult to navigate the cracks while walking in spiked heels and keep my weary arms in place to balance the food stuff.

In reality, I’m in slippers and pajama pants and sitting on my butt in front of the computer but all the details for each of these projects, plus all the people to coordinate with, and a husband and home that needs to be cleaned for out of town guests and bills that need to get paid and groceries

I’ve found it hard to stay focused and my priorities have been all over the map.

I’ve shared that each morning I strive to read two daily devotions that help me learn about God. I try to read a little bit of the Bible too. When I do that, my day seems to go much smoother. But even with devotions and Bible reading and lots and lots of prayer, I’ve shed a few tears this month.

The wedding is one week from today, the papers are due to press tomorrow and the magazine, well, it’s getting done as soon as possible (it does look great if I have to say so myself). The details seem never ending… the pressure to work on the magazine verses wedding table decorations…I’m constantly asking myself, “What should I do next?”

If I keep my eyes on the Lord, like the light of the campfire, I can go so much further with much less stress and get so much more completed. But when I look over my shoulder at another task, I trip up.

It’s an important project to work on but it is not the one I’m supposed to be doing at the moment. And I can tell when I’ve made the wrong choice because the responsibilities hanging over my head come crashing down around me and I have a meltdown.

I have to ask God’s help in deciding which task He knows is best for me right now. I choose and do it and move to the next task and before I know it, the day’s work is done. Then I sleep peacefully in His care AND start all over the next day.

One hundred percent of the time, when I keep my eyes on the light, everything that must get done, gets done, in a calm and orderly fashion…and in God’s perfect time.

The American Legion Auxiliary will be hosting our 2014 car show scholarship fund raiser at the American Legion in Firestone,on Saturday,August 23 rd. We are planning to have a live auction that day and we wanted it to be a bit different and fun for everyone.

Therefore, we are looking for things that folks may no longer want, use, or just plain need to get rid of and looking for a way to do this, we would gladly accept their donation. Items suggested are memorabilia, collectables, nostalgic cool things. (50's, 60's, 70's etc. Disco balls, Team (Broncos, Steelers, Raiders, etc.) stuff, Cool shirts, pictures would be some of the items.)(No trash, please!) Of course, new items and/ or gift cards, cash, etc. are always appreciated. We will also have collection boxes at the post for nonperishable food items to donate to Tri Town Food Bank and Firestone Care Center to help them out as well.

As you know, everyone has a need of some kind. If we can help out in any way, it is our goal to do so. We are also seeking volunteers that would like to help that day. Scout troops, vets, local students, moms, dads, etc. Anyone that enjoys helping in the community is welcome. Edelweiss Alpacas Farm Tours and Alpaca Fleeces for Sale

Show season and shearing are over and we’re settling in at Edelweiss Alpacas to enjoy the summer months of newborn crias (baby alpacas) and farm tours for the public.

zz What an exciting start to our summer community events.

Although we are past the cold winter weather, many attendees were chilled by a special appearance of Disney character royalty at the first Food and Paul Sorensen Flick Friday event with “Frozen” on the big screen at Hart Park. Record crowds attended this special evening with a new twist of food trucks, live music, face painting and games from the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District added to the event.

Perhaps Tony Carey you took the opportunity to do that at Frederick in Flight last month, which was a successful community event that resulted not only in entertainment for our friends and neighbors, but also gave us ten new art pieces to spread throughout Frederick in the form of large scale wood carvings. Firestone Police Chief David Montgomery accepted the award on behalf of our community. zz If you saw an unusually equipped white van driving around Town in mid-June you saw the pavement condition survey in action. The data collected will allow the Town to plan and manage our roads as we move into the future. zz New field lights will be installed at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex later this summer to light up all three fields.

This addition is sure to bring in additional baseball and softball tournaments into our community. zz Another new addition coming this summer will be disc golf at Central Park. This is finally off the wish list and one step closer to a reality. The design is in the works and installation of Phase I will begin soon. zz The Board of Trustees approved the final development plan for an apartment complex just west of Cimarron Pointe, an existing condo complex at Colorado Boulevard and Cimarron Street.

The zoning for this high density housing was set back in 2000.

Twenty-five percent of the apartments will be ground-level units with

ADA accessible for our growing senior community. zz Firestone’s signature and largest event, the 4th at Firestone, is already upon us. I love this patriotic event and all the day and evening activities. Starting with the parade and ending with fireworks, the day is packed with fun activities, live music and a special veteran’s recognition ceremony. As always, Carbon Valley’s best fireworks show will begin at 10 p.m. and it’s all held at Centennial Field under the blue water tower. Dacono is also fortunate to be hosting the BMX Mile High Nationals August 1-3. We are expecting 2,100 racers from 27 different states over the weekend for three days of world class racing. zz Saturday, July 19, between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.,

If you haven’t made it to a Downtown Sounds concert yet, I encourage you to grab your picnic blanket or camp chairs and come join us around the Crist Park gazebo. It is a truly quintessential Frederick experience, listening to music, enjoying some food from a local downtown business or farmers market vendor, and spending some time relaxing with your family. zz As the weather gets warmer, conserving water becomes an important part of our daily lives. While the Board has not imposed any mandatory watering restrictions, we do encourage you to be a good steward of this precious natural resource. You can find many water

saving tips on our website at www.frederickco.gov/conservewater and you can also learn more about the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), which is a project the town is currently involved in to secure Frederick’s future water supply needs. zz By now, you’ve probably seen our new brand for the Town of Frederick which is best portrayed in a brand video available on our website and social media. New Patient Identification “In the Palm of Your Hand” Longmont United Hospital to Use Palm Scanning Technology to Identify Patients

Longmont, CO June 2, 2014 - Longmont United Hospital is pleased to announce a new technology that will be used to improve accurate identification of patients, a biometric patient identification system, PatientSecure®. PatientSecure utilizes near infrared light to map an image of the blood-flow pattern through the veins in a person’s palm, the digital palm image is converted into a unique patient identifier that interfaces with the Hospital’s electronic health record system.

Palm vein scanning is a form of vascular pattern recognition technology and provides high level of accuracy in personal identification. It is more accurate than fingerprint recognition technology and has high acceptance rate by patients for ease of use. The vein pattern in a palm is unique to each person (even to identical twins) and does not change over the course of his/her lifetime.

The advanced technology, PatientSecure, helps to ensure each patient is correctly “linked” to the right medical record, a task that is not always as straightforward as it sounds. For example if more than one person has the same first and last name. With PatientSecure, a patient simply places his or her hand on a small black box and their unique identifying palm portrait automatically registers them and accesses his or her electronic health record, reducing the chances of misidentification and minimizing the need to present other identifying information after initial enrollment.

“PatientSecure provides a safe, secure, and easy way for our patients to register for care at the Hospital. It not only protects privacy and enhances quality, but transforms the patient experience,” said Michael Jefferies, vice president, information systems, Longmont United Hospital. “It’s secure and instantaneous.”

Registration using PatientSecure will be available July 15 at the Hospital’s Patient Registration. The Hospital’s integrated physician group, Milestone Medical Group, will begin using PatientSecure in midSeptember. There is no cost to patients to participate in PatientSecure.

Hello, my name is Devona Gooras and those near and dear to me know me as Devo. I have lived in the Carbon Valley area for 37 years. My grandfather worked here as a coal miner and settled in Firestone to raise his family. I am 3rd generation to come and live in the area. My husband, of 28 years, and I chose to raise our children here as well. I, personally, have always had a love for sports and music. I have been singing ever since the 8th grade.

I had a teacher come up and ask me if I would join the choir when I made it to high school. That’s how it all began and I took the idea of singing a bit more seriously. I had always been singing with the radio or TV shows for as long as I can remember. There is a line in one of Carrie Underwood’s songs that says “here’s to all you hairbrush singers”, that was me. Yes, I can admit that I used a hairbrush for a microphone; today I use a real one.

I graduated from Frederick High School and in high school I was a part of the Mixed Choir, Show Choir and was a member of the M.A.D. (Music, Art, and Drama) class. With the encouragement of my high school choir director, I participated in league choir, league solo competitions and received medals of placement. Last year I chose to audition for the X-Factor and had the honor of making it to the second round. Not too bad for my first time. It was a great experience and a huge deal to have made it to the second round!

For a period of time I have taken voice lessons to better myself and learn a bit about voice. I have been using my gift in church for 28 years by being a part of the choir and on praise teams, including the honor of being asked to sing solos. Recently I have become a song leader for Touching Lives ministry of Lifebridge Christian Church. This ministry provides worship service to those who are residing in various rest homes in Longmont. Some of you may have heard me sing the National Anthem at the Carbon Valley Relay for Life opening ceremony in years past, an honor I hold dear.

Recently I was a member of a group called Elvis and The Kings Messengers. Our goal was to reach people for Christ by singing Elvis gospel tunes. Some of the venues we sang at were the Candle Light Dinner Theatre, Schupe Homestead, Nissi’s in the Boulder area, the Boulder County Fairgrounds and Lifebridge Christian Church. I consider it a blessing that God has chosen to give me the gift of a singing voice to use for a meaningful purpose.

Today I am reaching out for sponsorship/donations to help use my gift for a cause that is helping not only women, but families in need. It is called A Woman’s Work. This is an organization that provides prompt one-time assistance to women and their families who have lived or worked in the St. Vrain Valley for 90 days or more. This organization is thriving today because community members continue to make charitable contributions through annual contributions, events, sponsorships, honorariums and memorials.

I am participating in an event they call a Vocal Face Off. It is a fundraising competition for vocalists, like me, to set a fundraising goal that will get me to the top 4 fundraisers who will have the honor of singing with the Vocal group, FACE. FACE is a nationally recognized vocal rock band based out of Boulder Colorado, bringing a new edge and attitude to the human voice. Using just five singers and a vocal drummer, Face creates a rock-music phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed. No instruments and no special effects-just six guys…….. until August 10th. My goal is $1500 but will gladly surpass that number to get an opportunity to sing on stage with FACE. FACE will be holding a concert at Lifebridge Christian Church on August 10th where the top four fundraisers will have an opportunity to sing with FACE as well as be a participant on that evening to be voted on for top vocalist of the evening.

Proceeds from this fundraising event will fund grants that assist women with needs that range from transportation to housing to clothing to childcare. A $500 sponsorship will include: Signage at the Event, Name on all publicity, 2 tickets to the VIP party (5:00 pm-6:00 pm) and 2 General Admission tickets to the concert. (6:30 pm-8:30 pm) I am very excited to be reaching or surpassing my goal to get that opportunity to sing with FACE! Donations can be made to me by going to www. awomanswork.org. You will be able to see my video interview and place a “FACE” with a name.

In conclusion, the first ever Vocal Face Off Competition premise is this--vocalists/performers are to compete in a fundraising competition. Each contestant will raise tax-deductible donations for A Woman’s Work. The top 4 fundraisers will earn a spot to sing/perform with Face at a concert on August 10, 2014, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm. The audience will vote for the First Annual Face Off winner at the concert. I am in it to win it for a great cause and would thank you in advance for your donation as well as your support at the concert on August 10th.

First Choice Emergency Room Opens in Firestone

By Jan Sciacca First Choice Emergency Room, the oldest and largest network of freestanding emergency medical facilities, had its grand opening in June and is open for business. It’s located at 5965 Firestone Boulevard, on the northwest corner of Firestone Blvd. and Colorado Blvd. The company First Choice Emergency Room was founded in 2002 to bring additional access to emergency medical care to local communities. The facility in Firestone is equipped to handle all adult and pediatric medical emergencies and is situated to serve the needs of Firestone and the surrounding I-25 Corridor communities. The company is known for revolutionizing the delivery of emergency medical services by offering patients convenient, neighborhood access to emergency medical care.

First Choice Emergency Room is equipped just like a hospital emergency room with CT, Digital X-ray, Ultrasound and on-site labs. Patients are seen almost immediately by a boardcertified physician and receive compassionate and focused care from the entire clinical staff.

The friendly Firestone staff is headed by facility manager Katherine Hey, Paula Eerger, Facility Resource Manager and Radiology Manager Suzy Overton.

An example of the benefits of a community emergency room are relayed in a story about Cynthia, who went into labor, in Colorado Springs. Cynthia’s husband Eric rushed her to the nearest emergency room - First Choice Emergency Room in Colorado Springs. Within 4 minutes of arriving at the facility, Cynthia gave birth to baby boy Logan. The umbilical cord was wrapped around Logan's neck, a potentially life threatening complication.

First Choice Emergency Room's physician handled the delivery well and as a result both mother and baby are fine. It would have been difficult for the couple to make it to the nearest hospital in time.

Muttz Natural Pet Products At Home in Firestone and in the I-25 Corridor

by Jan Sciacca The community is blessed to be home to the new Muttz Natural Pet Products, owned by Kim Morgan of Westminster. The new store, located at 4445 City Centre Road, Suite 200, is an easy on/ easy off destination from both I-25 and Firestone Boulevard. Muttz, a play on the word Mutts, is the third store for Kim. The other two sites are located in Broomfield and Westminster.

Kim is married and says her husband Sheldon is an engineer at Avaya. He is not involved directly in the businesses but watches with interest as his wife’s businesses grow and is quite supportive. Kim’s love for pets and their supplies all started years ago with one beloved Whippet named Angel.

Kim jokes that there must be something in her DNA where she has to open a new store every five years.

In June the Westminster store celebrated its tenth anniversary, the Broomfield its fifth anniversary and the Firestone store had its grand opening. She decided to place a store in Firestone after going on “drives” in her spare time. She found herself driving to Firestone several times. She liked the community. Then she saw the present location being built and she knew that was the spot for Muttz.

Nor does she sell animals. She does not want pets to avoid coming into her store for any reason and believes if they have fun when they’re there, their owners will too.

There's not a simple answer, but I do think that as we educate ourselves and create healthy habits, our daily health related fears will subside and confidence in our health choices will become the new norm.

Here are a few things we all need reminders on: We need to STOP: working out by yourself, obsessing over how many calories a workout burns, and telling yourself that exercise is torture.

We need to START: finding active things you enjoy doing that don’t seem like work (like a bike ride, hike, swimming, my fun fitness group), get together with other people and push each other building a healthy camaraderie, celebrate the small changes in your level of performance, and focusing on what you CAN do rather then what you can’t do.

When it comes to food, this is a much tougher issue for many people, that sometimes has deep seeded emotional issues.

We need to STOP: buying processed foods, drinking sodas, alcohol, sugary drinks and juices, going to fast food restaurants on a regular basis, telling yourself that healthy food costs more (it might cost a little more initially, but you will pay greatly for habitual poor food choices later on in life), and eating when you are emotional rather than hungry.

We need to START: cooking more at home, investing in and supporting our local farmer markets, looking at your body as an amazing machine that requires the best fuel possible, eating until satisfied not stuffed, and to try new vegetables and fruits.

Here are three thoughts I want to leave you with....remember that each of us are on our own journey. Someone who is more fit or runs faster than you is not better than you, they've just been on the journey longer than you have and are further along in the process. Be inspired by others' successes, but don’t compare their journey to your own. You'll get there!

Strive for progress, not perfection. When you fall off the wagon (and everyone does), you aren't starting back at square one. You're different than you were when you first started. The knowledge and new techniques you've learned while on this health journey makes it easier to get right back on that wagon again.

Don’t get down on yourself if you haven’t been as consistent as you know you should be. Get right back on track and realize you are stronger, better, and more knowledgeable than you were a month ago or a year ago.

Holly Foreman, an Examiner reporter wrote, “Produced by Kasha Fauscett, (below on right with actress Sara Heydlauff as Petra on the left) ‘Inner Dimension’ follows several strangers who disappear from the real world and find themselves lost in a metaphysical realm more ancient that the age of the dinosaurs. As the characters travel through portals between the two dimensions, meeting unlikely allies and foes, darkness seeps into the world and threatens the universe. Only a few can save it.

The web series combines the feel of ‘Lost’ and ‘Dr. Who’ with an even more unusual cast than most Comic Con projects see. There’s an ex-NFL player, a British Lord, and even a pro boxer for good measure. Equally unique is the paranormal spin the series takes on the end-of-the-worlddoomsday theme.”

This was written shortly before Denver’s Comic Con in mid-June where the web series debuted and costumed cast visited with attendees.

Artistic Director Wickey has his own measure of fame as a bronze sculptor. Wickey is especially known for bronze statues of athletes, freezing their famous moments in time, and he does lifelike custom commissions as well. Though he is heavily into the post-production phase of his own film ‘The Earth is Flat,’ Wickey lent a creative eye with his artistic flair to the ‘Inner Dimension’ series.

Kasha Fauscett is an actor who has put on her director hat for this project. With more than 15 film credits to her name, she has taken her passion for making people feel and tackles it from a different perspective with ‘Inner Dimension.’ The warm reception she has felt from the online community has her focusing on reaching a wider global audience.”

Foreman continues, “Sometimes the best pairing for a successful film project is people who can read each other’s minds and finish each other’s sentences. Fauscett's husband, Troy Fauscett is the other half of this dynamic duo and as the Writer for ‘Inner Dimension,’ he primarily has had to interpret his wife's vision. He has been able to translate Fauscett's direction for the cast and crew, and in huge part, the success of the web series relies heavily on him.

But Kasha Fauscett’s appetite for this unique project combines spectacularly with the artistic vision of Sam Wickey to create a stunning series definitely worthy of your time.”

Kasha Fauscett explains in an interview by Westword’s Cory Casciato, "Basically, the Inner Dimension is connected and a functional part of our universe." Kasha is the producer and co-creator of the series. She continues, "It was never meant for mankind to discover, let alone enter, but by virtue of modern architecture people began arriving and becoming part of the inner dimension in a different state of mind."

Casciato explains that this premise will unfold over twelve episodes, premiering online in the first week of August and continuing at a pace of one a week until the entire story -- or at least the first part of it -- is told. (August 2nd through October 18th) If all goes according to plan, viewers won't be able to look away once they get their first taste,” Casciato concludes.

With spring here and summer on the not-so-distant horizon, more and more homeowners are stepping outside to tackle outdoor projects that have been ignored all winter. Dacono Bulk Waste Clean-Out

Annual Event Saturday, July 19, 2014 The annual bulk waste clean-out event is set for Saturday, July 19, at the Denver Regional Landfill in Erie.Members of the Dacono City Council will be volunteering in the clean-up and collecting a $5 cash donation to benefit the Tri-Town Food Bank. This one day event allows residents to dispose of large household items that are not typically accepted through regular trash service. o Acceptable items generally include yard waste, non-commercial construction debris, old furniture and just plain junk. o The event is free to Dacono residents residing within the corporate limits. o A valid proof of residency (utility bill) is required. Stericycle sponsors this event by paying the landfill fee on behalf of Dacono with additional support from Gator Rubbish Removal.

Pedestrian Bridges to be Installed in Historic Firestone by Fall 2014

The purchase of two pedestrian bridges in Historic Firestone was approved by the Board of Trustees at its June 11, 2014, meeting. The bridge manufacturer will now complete its structural design while Town staff makes final adjustments to the abutment structural design.

The Firestone Public Works department will begin construction later this summer and installation is expected in early September.

The first bridge will be installed at the south end of the Jacob H. Firestone Memorial Park located at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Grant Avenue. This area of the trail has a downward slope where water and ice have traditionally collected causing unsafe passage. The second bridge will allow direct access to the trail through the Firestone Villas neighborhood off of Venice Avenue. Both of the bridges will protect health and safety concerns for patrons of the trail, as well as provide a safer route to school for students.

The bridges will be funded through the Parks Impact Fee Fund. The expenditure was approved by the Firestone Board of Trustees as part of the 2014 budget process.

Utility Work Begins on Firestone Boulevard in Preparation for Expansion

The orange cone zone has begun on Firestone Boulevard as crews have started the utility portion of the roadway widening project. Construction will run throughout the summer and info the fall as the project will be broken into two parts to tackle the utility work and then the actual pavement widening. The roadway widening will allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction between Cimarron Street and Birch Street.

For the utility portion of the project, crews will be lowering the Central Weld county Water District 12-inch waterline to get ready for extension of a box culvert, which will take about four to six weeks from demolition to final grading. During that time crews will also be lowering a shorter piece of the 12-inch waterline and extending an existing 36-inch concrete culvert. It is estimated that the utility work should be completed by late August. The paving contractors should begin the roadway paving as soon as the utility project is completed.

The Firestone Board of Trustees opted to break the project into two parts in April after only a single bid was received during the request for proposals earlier this year. That bid came in much higher than what Town staff estimated. Breaking the project into two pieces will allow the Town to potentially significantly decrease the total cost of the project as compared to the bid received.

Firestone Elected Officials Receive CML Leadership Training Awards

Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen and Trustee Bobbi Sindelar were recently honored by the Colorado Municipal League (CML) for reaching milestone levels with its MUNIversity program, which is a leadership program for Colorado’s municipal elected officials. The two Firestone elected officials were honored during the CML annual conference the week of June 16.

Sorensen reached the Fundamental level of the program which requires 30 training credits, and Sindelar reached the Leadership level, which is achieved when the official reaches 60 hours of training.

Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy said, “I am appreciative of the intentionality of these elected individuals to prepare themselves to lead our community.”

The CML program was started in January 1991 to recognize elected officials who increase their knowledge of municipal government and their ability to lead.

This year was our biggest Frederick in Flight yet with 27 balloons lifting off on Saturday morning and ten new wood carvings to spread throughout the community. Allergies are commonly experienced in the Spring and Fall and can be very disruptive to life. A common question people ask is, can acupuncture help ease or eliminate allergies? Afterwards Dr. Tusek presented at the national Direct Primary Care Conference, educating an audience of over 100 physicians about implementing direct care models like Nextera into their practice.

More than 800 Pack the Park for Firestone’s First Food & Flick Friday

Firestone was the place to be this past Friday, June 6, 2014, as more than 800 people packed Hart Park for the Town’s first Food & Flick Friday event. Attendees flocked to the food trucks, played games, had their faces painted, listened to live music, snacked on popcorn and watched Frozen on the big screen. A special treat was the appearance of the Frozen princess who visited with guests at the event and performed live before the movie began.

Food trucks have become the latest in full-fledged mobile restaurants with seasoned chefs offering a variety of scrumptious gourmet fare. With the trucks selling out within a few hours, the Town is already working to book more trucks for the upcoming Food & Flick Friday events.

The Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District kept things lively with movie-focused games such as freeze tag, frozen toezies, snowman building and ice cube races. Face painting decorated kids’ faces with princess crowns and cartoon characters. The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District made an appearance with a fire truck for kids to check out and have photos taken with firemen. Ash Ganley provided live music, and event sponsor Encana Oil & Gas provided free water and popcorn as the movie started.

The Food & Flick Friday series runs throughout the season on four additional event dates.

Water Safety Tips for Summer Time Fun zzIn order to ensure an enjoyable and safe summer, protect yourself and your children by taking these simple precautions when engaging in recreational activities involving water: The most important safety measure is to watch your children constantly when they are at the beach, near the pool or any containers of water. Many kids will not or may not be able to call out or splash when they are in danger. zzDrain containers or kiddie pools as soon as you are finished using them. zzAlways enter the water feet first. zzNever swim alone, and don’t let other adults, teens or children swim alone. zzMake sure the water is deep enough (at least 9 feet deep, according to the American Red zzCross) before jumping or diving. If you cannot verify the depth, it is best to gradually enter and not jump in. zzIf you can’t swim or don’t know CPR, enroll yourself in classes. A significant number of downings have been prevented because parents had these skills. zzDo not enter the water if you have consumed alcohol or medication: each year, up to half of all adult drowning cases is linked to alcohol use. zzDo not chew gum or eat food while in the water—you could choke. zzIntroduce your kids to the water early in age. Use bath time to familiarize them with floating and going underwater. Enroll them in swimming and CPR classes as soon as possible. zzUse only certified life preservers and floatation devices. Don’t rely on water wings or air floats for safety.

If you witness someone drowning: 1. Alert another person in the area and Call 911 immediately. Make sure someone keeps visual contact with the person experiencing difficulty at all times so that a proper location can be given to emergency crews when they arrive.

2. ONLY if the person is close enough, throw a floatable object to them, or extend a rope or a pole to them and pull them to safety.

3. ONLY if you are an experienced swimmer AND the above option did not work, should you enter the water. zzBring a floatation device with a rope attached that is strong enough to support both you and the person experiencing trouble. zzPUSH the floatation device to the person once you are close enough to them zzDO NOT get so close to the person that they can grab you. People experiencing emergencies in the water often panic and grab on to the first thing they come in contact with. If it happens to be you, they may push you under the water in order to keep themselves afloat. zzIf this happens to you, DO NOT PANIC, simply swim deeper out of the person’s grasp and away from them. zzOnce the person has hold of the floatation device, swim them to safety.

Encana Hosts Multi-Jurisdictional Derrick Rescue Training

Encana hosted a multi-jurisdictional training exercise with Mountain View Fire Rescue, FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District, Longmont Fire, and Fort Lupton Fire on June 11, 2014. The objective of the training was to simulate the rescue an unconscious 187 lb. worker located on a rig derrick tower.

The four fire agencies & Encana worked together to rescue the victim through three different evolutions.

Each evolution required crews to use a different form of rescue and each time crews rescued the worker successfully.

“Working with entities such as Encana and our neighboring fire departments gives our crews the ability to test methods of training for unexpected circumstances,” said Assistant Chief Roger Rademacher of Mountain View Fire Rescue. “We are appreciative of businesses that make safety a top priority and that encourage multiagency trainings so that we can all learn from each other.”

Encana’s support of the local responder community isn’t just limited to training exercises. Encana also developed a mobile emergency command center for use during Encana related incidents or in support of large scale community incidents like the September 2013 flood event. The mobile unit is equipped with basic spill response materials, cameras, computers, telephones, hard hats, and the technology required to enhance communication and response during an incident. “The mobile unit means we can respond fast and efficiently—we’re ready—whenever and wherever we’re needed.” said Danny Knutson, Manager of Field Safety, DJ Basin at Encana. “Having the ability to deploy our mobile command center provides the technology and resources response teams need so that they can focus on the incident at hand.”

2 Students Headed to Rotary Youth Camps

The Longmont Mortgage Branch of Peoples Bank is sponsoring two students to the week long Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camps this summer on behalf of the Carbon Valley Rotary Club.

Students between 7th and 8th grades will attend the camp near Larkspur; high school students between sophomore and senior grades will attend the Estes Park camp at no cost to the students.

This morning at 4:53 a.m. multiple Erie citizens that live in the Vista Ridge community called 911 to report a playground on fire at Black Rock Elementary School. (2000 Mountain View Boulevard, Erie) Upon arrival, firefighters found flames 50 feet high and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire caused about $50,000 in damage.

In Honor of Ms Beulah Meeker When we first started this Nonprofit, Beulah was one of our staunchest supporters. She encouraged us to become an independent organization so that the Seniors would truly be able to have a say in their own destiny. She was also instrumental in suggesting that we use Mr. Rick Samson as our Attorney of Record and we are exceptionally grateful for that, as he was a huge help in getting us incorporated, and his advice has been exceptional in guiding us in the right direction.

Beulah's favorite Poet was Edgar A. Guest. She once gave me one of his poems and it has inspired me on so many levels. I told Mr. Samson that when we have our own Senior Center, I would like to place a plaque in the main hall with Beulah's name and picture and this her favorite Poem.

Weld County Senior Nutrition Lunch Program for Carbon Valley

The Weld County Senior Nutrition Program serves hot, nutritious meals to seniors 60+ at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center located at 701 Fifth St, Fredrick. All food is provided by UNC in Greeley Colorado each Thursday at 12:00 pm.

Seniors 60+ and their spouses are eligible, as are persons who reside in subsidized housing complex’s that provide meal site nutrition programs. A small donation of $3 is suggested, but certainly not required. Check us out. It is a lot of fun!

Firestone Pavement Condition Survey To Facilitate Street Improvement Prioritization Grid

In early June, Firestone residents caught a glimpse of a strange vehicle driving throughout Town with mounted lasers. This was Infrastructure Management Services conducting an intensive pavement condition survey of all Town streets.

The survey gathered information regarding all street conditions using a laser to perform a surface condition assessment. Segments of each street will be given a score of what its surface condition is currently, which will allow staff to access which streets need attention now and which can be postponed. Along with the score will be raw data that can help determine the appropriate treatment or repair. The results, which should be made available to the Town by the end of July, will allow the Town to rank and prioritize street rehabilitation with scientific data.

With the results, the Town will seek public input and factor that information and the survey data into the next several budget processes to direct funding to make repairs to streets. The street and park dedicated tax increase, which was passed by voters in November 2013, will provide the allocated money to conduct the condition survey and fund street projects moving forward.

The Firestone Board of Trustees believes it will be instrumental for the Town to conduct this survey every three to five years to reevaluate the condition of the streets.

Often the websites are very basic in information. You may be able to get a general idea of doctrine, but the overall atmosphere is something that can ONLY be understood through walking through the front door.

3. You Must Be Diligent Treat finding a church like you would finding a job. This church is going to be your spiritual influence! You need to make sure that you leave no stone left unturned. At the same time, make sure that you do not just visit one week and make that your church! Visit several churches, and visit them multiple times.

4. Make it a TOP Priority Choosing a True church is NOT a small thing. And it is not necessarily easy! We must understand what the purpose of church is! It is for the strengthening of ourselves through the GENUINE preaching of the Gospel. The Word of God is something that needs to be the center of the church. If the Word of God is not being preached, opened, or expounded than you are not going to be stretched like you should!

If you are more focused on programs than the preaching of the Word of God, you will end up in a church that is shallow and will not teach you to stretch yourself spiritually. The goal of a Christian and going to church is to stretch themselves to be more like Christ. It is not a social gathering and it is NOT about entertainment. Do not exchange TRUTH for entertainment.

Stuart Edward Holt

Stuart Edward Holt passed away unexpectedly at his home in Mead, CO on June 2, 2014. Stuart was a retired U.S. Army Major, and Sheriff’s deputy with Boulder County. Stuart joined the United States Army in 1982 after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Business Administration degree. In May 1995 Stuart began his career as a jail deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. He attended POST certification training and became a patrol deputy in January 1998. For many years Deputy Holt worked in the mountain communities of Boulder County. During his law enforcement career Stuart received numerous compliments from citizens, staff and other law enforcement agencies. He was a man of few words preferring to let his actions communicate his character. Stuart was always quick to help, and to do what was right.

In 1997, 2010, and 2013 Stuart was honored with the Life Saving Medal for intervening in a life-threatening situation. He also received a Sheriff’s Commendation in 2007 as well as a Letter of Commendation from the CU Police Department for his quick action in an armed assault that occurred on the CU Boulder Campus. Deputy Holt’s timely intervention and engagement prevented other attacks and more tragic events. In 2011, he also received the Meritorious Service Award. He was a deputy that carried out his duty to the best of his ability in a compassionate and respectful manner. Overall, Stuart dedicated 18 years to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

Stuart enjoyed the Colorado lifestyle, golfing, skiing and racquetball. He was a member of Faith Community Lutheran Church. He was a loving father and husband, a true friend, and a dedicated public servant who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his mother Patricia Holt of Sonora CA, his wife Shirley Holt of Mead, CO and his daughter Samantha Holt of Los Angeles CA. He is further survived by his brother Steven (Julie) Holt of Sonora CA and his sister Holly (Paul) Charpentier of Kingsburg CA. His father preceded him in death in 2013.

Cremation was entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. A celebration of Stuart’s life was held June 10. The Holt family respectfully request memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to the Wounded Warrior Project c/o Howe Mortuary of Longmont 439 Coffman St. Longmont, CO 80501. Tina Joy Ridnour Young, 52, of Firestone, died June 20, 2014 at Longmont United Hospital. She was born July 17, 1961 in Fort Collins, CO. to Bobby L. Ridnour and Barbara J. Ridnour. Tina was a graduate of Longmont High School and worked as a receptionist at various businesses in the area.

In her free time Tina enjoyed spending time taking drives in the mountains, doing crafts and organizing whatever needed to be organized.

Survivors include her parents of Longmont, her husband Paul Young of Firestone, her son Bobby Amaya of Longmont, her step-daughters Jessica Lucero and Brandi Briseno of Longmont, and Kayla White of Dallas, TX. She is further survived by her brother Nile S. Ridnour of Loveland, CO, her sister Debby Lauer of Platteville, CO. and her grandchild Julian Amaya.

Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. Graveside services and inurnment were held Wednesday, June 25 at the Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins. Roberto (Quirino) Moreno January 13, 1934 - June 10, 2014

Roberto (Quirino) Moreno, 80, of Dacono, passed away June 10, 2014 in Longmont. He was born in Mexico on January 13, 1934 and married Evangeline Sandoval on February 3, 1967 in Greeley, Colorado.

Roberto has been a resident of Dacono since his marriage in 1967 and had worked as a Welder for PNS Iron Works in Greeley.

He had a “Burrito Route” for the last 20 years that went from Greeley to Brighton. Previously, he had been a professional Boxer in Mexico and a Mexican El Charro II. His hobbies included working is his yard, where he was often found pruning his fruit trees. He also enjoyed working on his 1957 Pontiac and 1954 Dodge truck. Roberto was a loving husband, father and Guito and he will be greatly missed.

Roberto is survived by his wife of 47 years, Evangeline, of Dacono; children, Ricarda (Juan) Rivera of Frederick, Roberto, Jr. (Angela) Moreno of Dacono and Margo (Ben) Chavez of Longmont; two brothers; seven sisters; eight grandchildren, Alexandra, Robertina, Erika, Jessica, Isela, Juanito, Ricardo and Evangelina.

Visitation Service was held on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at 5:00-7:00pm. The Funeral Service followed on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11:00am. All services were held at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home in Brighton.

Tabor-Rice Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Helpful Suggestions for Those Who Grieve

•

Give yourself respites from your grief. Just because you’re grieving doesn’t mean you must always be feeling sad or forlorn. There’s value in sometimes consciously deciding that you’ll think about something else for awhile, or that you’ll do something you’ve always enjoyed doing. Sometimes this happens naturally and it’s only later you realize that your grief has taken a back seat. Let it, this is not an indication you love that person any less or that you’re forgetting them. It’s a sign that you’re human and you need relief from the unrelenting pressure. It can also be a healthy sign you’re healing.

Begin your day with your loved one. If your grief is young, you’ll probably wake up thinking of that person anyway. So why not decide that you’ll include her or him from the start? Focus this time in a positive way. Bring to your mind fulfilling memories.

Recall lessons that this person taught you, gifts he or she gave you.

Think about how you can spend your day in ways that would be keeping in with your loved one’s best self and with your best self.

Then carry that best self with you through your day.
