A

pril…April showers bring May flowers…April 9 is the 17th year since my oldest son died… the air smells fresh…the tulips and hyacinths are sprouting…Easter… new life…. These things run through my mind as March winds down.

April brings me peace and, in that peace, I feel more free to love; and I want to love more those who are close to me. I want to breathe deeply. I want my soul cleansed and my mind free of thoughts that bind and drag me down. I want freedom. April, Spring, Good Friday, Easter; helps me recognize true freedom.

Karen Ehman, an author, recently wrote about the story of Mary and Martha.

Martha was the busy, distracted one.

Karen wrote, “It is interesting that the word we find translated “distracted” in the English language in this passage was only used one time in the entire New Testament. The original Greek word first used here means “to be driven about mentally; to be overoccupied; to be greatly troubled; to be too busy about a thing.”

That is me at the end of March, distracted and overly busy…I am driven about mentally…I need to stop and breathe and feel and love…and rest.

Many are participating in Lent and giving up something important to them i.g. chocolate, alcohol, Twitter. Maybe

busyness is something to consider giving up. I’m always doing something or going somewhere. What I know I need to do is STOP and spend time with Jesus. I need to let Him calm me so I can think clearly.

I would like to get to a place where I let the Lord guide my to-do list, putting it in the proper order of importance. And I’d surely like to let Him motivate and energize me to get my house in order; relinquishing a lot of stuff.

I’m learning that when I let the Lord guide me, peace of mind rules. Chaos in my brain is soothed. No matter how much I have to get done, it gets done and it feels good at the end of the day. Very good.

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to learn this and then to do it regularly.

Why does it not happen more naturally? If I believe what I say I do, then Jesus is not only my Lord, but He is also my big brother. If He is God’s son and I am a child of God, it only makes sense that we are family. Right?

The Bible says, “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.” Then it says, “This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”

(Ephesians 1:4-5) WOW! Before the world was made, I was chosen.

This is the season for Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God, or “Yeshua,” a name prevalent in Hebrew and Aramaic languages. Yeshua, my Lord and my brother. As Easter approaches and egg hunts are in full swing, many head to church who would not ordinarily.

That is a good thing.

I would hope, however, that each person would find Yeshua in that place of worship. How do you know if Jesus is there? Is love present or judgment? Is freedom shared or condemnation? Is peace available or only chaos?

Jesus’ love is free and free-flowing. I do not have to “fix” myself before approaching him. He’s already done the work, on the cross. I remember the day I looked into his eyes, and He loved me. His love has given me freedom to love more deeply and live fully in his peace, no matter what.

Friendly Code Enforcement Reminders from the Dacono Police Department

D

acono Police Department’s top priority is protecting the health, safety and welfare of Dacono’s citizens and city codes play an important role in this. Codes also help to maintain the attractive appearance of neighborhoods and protect property values. The mission of code enforcement is to ensure compliance with city ordinances in a fair and comprehensive manner.

In this issue of friendly code enforcement reminders, we want to focus on property standards. The intent of property standards code enforcement is to preserve and enhance existing neighborhoods, commercial areas, business and the community at large by regulating and controlling the use and maintenance of all properties within the City of Dacono. We ask you to take a moment and review the following exterior maintenance standards within Dacono’s code.

Exterior Maintenance * The exterior finish of all structures shall be maintained in good repair, free of defect and shall be maintained prior to a time when the finish has substantially deteriorated.

The exterior finish must consist of materials commonly used and meeting industry standards of acceptable construction. * All architectural projections such as cornices, moldings, lintels, sills and similar projections shall be maintained in good repair and free of defects. * All chimneys, vents, gutters, downspouts, light fixtures, roofing or building accessories shall be structurally sound, in good repair and shall be properly secured to an exterior wall or roof.

Fences and Retaining Walls All fences and retaining walls shall be in good repair, be structurally sound, in an upright position, and the exterior finish in good repair and free of defect. If the fencing contains slats, all slats must be present and complete in length.

Landscaping All landscape areas shall be maintained in compliance with the provisions of Chapter 16, Article 28 of the Dacono Municipal Code.

Windows and Doors Windows and exterior glazing shall be sound, free from cracks and loose and broken glass, and be capable of being secured in a closed position. Doors and windows shall be maintained weather tight, watertight and rodent proof. All screening and awnings shall be maintained in good repair and free from tears, holes or other imperfections.

Auxiliary Structures All auxiliary structures shall be maintained in a state of good repair or removed from the site. Such structures shall include, but not be limited to, tree houses, club houses, well houses, carports, garages, and miscellaneous sheds or structures. These structures shall be constructed of materials consistent with the use of the structure and shall be structurally sound. Temporary tents or canopies and skateboard ramps shall be restricted to a back yard.

Parking Lots The parking lot(s) of commercial establishments or multi-family buildings shall be kept free from potholes, cracks or other deterioration. No dirt, grass or sod parking areas are allowed. All striping and signage, including, but not limited to, parking signage and fire lane or access signage shall be maintained in good condition and clearly visible.

Skillets, omelets, burritos and traditional options in both Mexican and American are available. Fire roasted red and green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, plus chorizo, bacon, sausage, AND ham, are in the Maya Ultimate Omelet...sounds delicious and filling!

The relaxed and pleasant atmosphere calmed us along with the joyful spirit of our server. One reviewer stated, “Delicious food, kind, hardworking people! ho knew a little lemonade stand could make such a profound impact on the lives of so many veterans. In 2016, Jackson and Maisie McPherson held a lemonade stand to help raise money for Honor Flight. Since then the annual lemonade stands has raised $14,000 for the cause. This paid for 14 veterans to go to WA D.C. to see the memorials built to honor them, leaving them with a lasting and profoundly positive impact on their lives.

Jackson is now 12 and Maisie is 10. When they first started their stand, they were too young to fully understand what their lemonade stand really did for veterans. Over the years and they have come to understand and realize their impact. They have had many veterans contact them and thank them for what they do.

When they are asked why they do it? They will tell you: “All the motorcycles are cool”, also “the classic cars and all the jeeps that come are awesome”, and of course, “it is great to help our veterans.”

The lemonade stand is now an official 501(c)3 Non-Profit. The mission is simple: To raise money and awareness to veterans causes. And to give children an opportunity to volunteer and make a difference first hand in a veteran’s life by providing lemonade stands to raise funds for veterans causes.

Jackson and Maisie are involved in many veterans’ events, laying pennies on soldiers’ tombstones at Fort Logan cemetery on Memorial Day, laying wreaths on soldier’s graves for Wreaths Across America, and a favorite event, helping to serve water and donuts to WWII Veterans in Loveland at a WWII Airplane show.

 Stormwater Master Plan – The Town of Mead Board of Trustees approved the 2019 Stormwater Master Plan at the March 11 meeting. This plan provides the Colleen Whitlow Town of Mead with a comprehensive analysis of the area, which will allow for the Town and developers to understand the existing drainage patterns, 100-year runoff flows, and infrastructure capacity for the watershed tributary areas impacting the Town and its future expansion areas. Pick any day in the month of May that works best for you!  Voucher Required - Dacono residents, with valid ID, can obtain one voucher from Dacono City Hall for free disposal of one load of large bulk items. Only one voucher per household will be issued. Vouchers are not available at the gate. The voucher must be presented to the gate attendant or landfill charges will apply. Letter to Editor: I think readers would be interested to know what is happening with the eagle nest that is near Highway 52 and WCR 5.

Frederick has given the okay to the developers of the Wyndham subdivision to expand much closer to the nest than the half-mile buffer guidelines of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency.

Personally, I would like to know why this new building couldn’t be dialed back and the required open space be put closest to this nest for a buffer?

These eagles have already been displaced by developers at least once. How about giving them a break and giving our kids an educational opportunity that could be unique and profound?

Keep Keith Alquist on the United Power Board of Directors—Vote by April 12

i, I’m Keith Alquist and I am currently one of your directors from the South District. I have represented all of the members of United Power for the last year and an half and I want to continue to represent you for this next term.

These are exciting and changing times but the electric business is serious business. Our expanding communities require and demand reliable service at affordable rates. I ask for your support and vote to continue representing you, our member owners, for this next term.

I have attended every board meeting and regulatory meeting since I was appointed by the board of directors of United Power to fill the vacant directorship left when the previous director in the South District resigned in 2017. I have put all of my energy into fulfilling my responsibility as a director to do my duty to contribute to the governance of United Power.

This past year I completed my Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate (CCD) that is required by every board member during their first 3 year term. By the time of this election, I will have almost completed the second level of director training, the Board Leadership Certificate.

I am currently a member of the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives and have been for 27 years. I have used this experience to be an active member on the audit committee.

My wife, Julie, and I have lived in Brighton for over 26 years and we raised our four children here. Previous to being semi-retired, I was the Vice President and CFO of American Pride Co-op for 20 years until it was merged into Agfinity Inc in 2012. I am an active member of the Rotary Club of Brighton and am involved in a number of projects helping the community, especially the dictionary project for 900 third grade students and

the U.S. Constitution project for almost 1000 fifth grade students in Brighton and Henderson.

Many exciting changes have been completed in the last few years that are positioning United Power to continue to serve its members to the highest level possible. AMI meters, solar farms, residential solar, net metering and the Tesla battery project for peak shaving to help save members money are all great projects.

The world of generation is changing from carbon based to more renewable sources like solar, wind and hydro. So we must keep ahead of governmental mandates and keep up to date in using the changes in technology to best serve you, our member, owners.

I want United Power to continue to be a strong and nationally recognized leader in electric cooperatives.

Where Am I?

T

he term Carbon Valley includes the Town of Frederick, Town of Firestone and the City of Dacono, (Although, Carbon Valley includes Erie, Mead and a few others).

In the blink of an eye, you can travel from one town/city to the other and in some cases; see one town/city on your right while another is on your left!

The City of Dacono is fairly easy to map out. With Highway 52 dividing Dacono from Frederick; the south street by U-Pump it is Glen Creighton, but the North Street by 7/11 is Frederick Parkway. From Hwy 52 Dacono continues south to road 8. As for the East and west boundaries, Interstate I-25 serves as a dividing line from Erie East to road 17. Only ONE zip code is used for Dacono; 80514, and is established as a Weld County zipcode.

The Town of Firestone has a few different pieces in their boundaries.

Firestone Starts as far north as Highway 66 and continues south on the East side of Colorado Blvd to Majestic. However, Firestone also includes the area by Interstate I25 and Hwy 119. There are TWO zip codes for Firestone: 80520 and 80504. The 80504 is actually a Boulder County zip code, even though it is in Firestone (Weld County).

As for the Town of Frederick, the line starts at Hwy 52 and continues north on both sides of Colorado Blvd to Majestic. At that point, Frederick stops on the East side of Colorado Blvd, but continues north on the West Side. So while Safeway is Firestone, the Milavec Lake, Bella Rosa Golf Course, and housing subdivisions west to I25 are still Frederick. But, remember, Firestone starts again by I25 to include American

Furniture Warehouse, Home Depot center and the Eagle Crest subdivision. The Town of Frederick has THREE zip codes; 80530, 80516 and 80504. Both the 80516 and the 80504 are Boulder County zip codes, even though it is in Frederick. Now, to make it even more mind boggling, the homes on Godding Hollow, (near the lake) are in unincorporated Weld, not Frederick! And, to top off this maze of where things are, nestled in the middle of Frederick off Johnson Street is a small town called Evanston. Yes, a little town inside of Frederick!

Are you confused yet? The purpose of this story is two-fold. First, with such close proximity and intertwining of our Towns/Cities, we really are just one big community! Second, if you live in one of the Boulder County zip code areas, be sure when buying insurance, renewing plates, etc. that you always be sure you are noted as Weld County!

Color Wheels 101

I

f you feel you may not have an eye for color selection, you aren’t alone. A color wheel provides a foolproof method for finding a color scheme for your paint, upholstery, window and floor coverings and your exterior colors as well.

A color wheel shows us the relationships between colors. Most color wheels start with 12 colors: 3 Primary: Red, Yellow, Blue 3 Secondary: Orange, Green, Purple 6 Tertiary: Blue-Violet, Red-Violet, Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, YellowGreen, Blue-Green Remember the colors on the green side of the wheel are cooler colors and the colors on the red side are warm.

‘Wait a minute,’ you say, ‘I don’t want a Red-Orange and Blue-Green room.’

This is where color dimensions come in. Beginning with our pure colors on the wheel we change the value of each hue (color) by adding white to create a tint, black to create a shade, or gray to create a tone. Thus we have the thousands of colors created by paint companies.

From your color wheel we can choose different color schemes:

Monochromatic: One color in its own varying tints, tones and shades. This is where adding textures is important.

Complimentary: Two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.

Simply draw a straight line across. Great for contrast and works best when one of the colors dominate and the other is an accent.

Analogous: Two to six colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel.

Provides automatic balance. Three or four colors work best.

Triad: Three colors that are equally spaced on the color wheel. Place an equilateral triangle over the wheel for perfect harmony.

Split Complimentary: One base color with the two colors that are on either side of its complement. Place a Y over the wheel.

Others shapes to try: Square, Pentagon and Tetrad (4 colors in a rectangle that are two sets of complements.) These work best when you have one dominant color and carefully balance the others.

Weld Joins Other Colorado Counties As A Second Amendment Sanctuary County WELD COUNTY, CO (3/6/19) —

T

oday, the Weld County Board of Commissioners joined a growing number of Colorado counties declaring themselves a “Second Amendment Sanctuary County.” The resolution comes in response to HB 19-1177, or the Red Flag Bill, which allows family members, household members or law enforcement to petition a judge to remove firearms from an individual they deem dangerous to themselves or others.

“The issue isn’t an issue of safety as much as it is an issue of protecting the constitutional rights of citizens,” said Commissioner Chair Barbara Kirkmeyer.

Per the resolution, the Weld County Commissioners affirmed their “support for the Weld County Sheriff in the exercise of his sound discretion to not enforce against any citizen an unconstitutional firearms law”.

“When we are elected into office, we take an oath in front a judge to support the Constitution of the United States,” said Commissioner Pro Tem Mike Freeman.

“And that’s exactly what this resolution says we will do.”

“Case after case has affirmed the second amendment of the constitution,” said Commissioner Scott James. “Taking constitutional rights away from citizens under the guise that it is for the ‘greater good’ is a very dangerous path to walk

down, and one we do not support.”

S i m i l a r to the other Colorado county resolutions, the Weld County resolution states the Board of Commissioners “will not appropriate government funds for capital construction of building space and purchase of storage systems to store weapons seized pursuant to the authority and requirements set forth in H.B. 19-1177, if such bill is enacted by the Colorado General Assembly, and /or for the purpose of enforcing any other law that unconstitutionally infringes up on the right of the People of Weld County to keep and bear arms.”

“The principal of due process is at the very core of this issue,” said Commissioner Sean Conway. “What this bill does is create a system where a person must defend/ prove their innocence against an action that hasn’t even been taken.”

“This bill is nothing more than a feelgood measure that will not stop the actions it is aiming to prevent,” said Commissioner Steve Moreno. “There are other solutions that must be seriously considered when talking about mental health issues in this country. This bill is not it.”

here are some things in life we just expect to work – always: the lights when we flip the switch on; the television when we push the remote button. But often we give little thought as to what actually makes those things so reliable, what makes them work, until they don’t. Perhaps none more true than being able to call 911 when we need emergency help.

Putting together a state-of-the-art emergency communications system is one of the responsibilities we as commissioners take very seriously. With 300,000 people calling approximately 4,000 square miles home in our county, our job is to make sure, whether rural or urban, the same service is available and reliable for all of our constituents.

Over the years, county government has invested millions of dollars in our Public Safety Communications infrastructure; not only to ensure residents can connect with first responding agencies in an emergency but also to ensure first responding agencies can connect with each other when responding to calls.

Last year alone, the county invested more than $11 million in hardware and software upgrades to emergency communications platforms. The county purchased a new communications tower in the Windsor/Severance area and has partnered with Windsor Police and the Windsor-Severance Fire Protection District to develop the site to ensure reliable communication platforms for first responders along the 1-25 corridor north of Highway 34. The county also replaced the communications tower in the Grover area to ensure improved coverage in the north-eastern part of our county. The upgrade in our software programs and the creation of a redundant system further ensures the reliability of our Land Mobile Radio systems for first responders, which, in turn, ensures reliable communication and response to the public.

But not all of the investments are made just to the internal/response end of public safety communications. In 2017, the county launched its Text-To-911 service to the public, which allows people who can’t verbally provide information about their emergency to text that information to our dispatch center. And another enhancement, which launched in January of this year, allows for more accurate location finding of people calling from mobile devices anywhere in the county.

The dedication of the Board of Commissioners to create the best public safety communications system is second only to the dedication of our public safety communications staff to maintain and run that system.

For the past five years, the Weld County Regional Communications Center has been awarded an honor given to less than 200 communications centers world-wide: it has been accredited as an Emergency Medial Dispatch Center of Excellence. In 2015, the center was recognized as one of the top ten call centers in the country by 911DispatcherEDU.org. And in 2017, the center’s manager was one of only 22 graduates from the prestigious Certified Public Safety Executives Program. Our staff ’s dedication to providing the best in public safety communications to our residents is amazing and a testament to their dedication to provide the best service to the people of this county.

Together, staff, emergency first responders and commissioners are continually exploring ways to improve our systems and our processes. E

ver notice a $5 or $10 or $20 bill on the ground when no one else is anywhere around? Perhaps it was even a larger denomination. It’s like finding hidden treasure in plain sight. Not many would object to such a discovery. Or maybe you were on a hike in the mountains and you got off the main trail and discovered a beautiful scene that few had ever seen; you took it all in and got some phone photos to remember what you had found. Did you ever get a “hot tip” on some bargain being sold downtown or at a garage sale with just what you were looking for at an undervalued price? There are many more examples of making a personal gain that improves your life/lifestyle that seem to come to you ‘out of nowhere’.

Let me give you a “hot tip” on the very best treasure I have ever discovered in my 72 years of walking on this planet.

I’ll let you in on it free of charge! At the tender young age of 23, having survived a tour in Viet Nam and being married to the girl of my dreams, we found ourselves at a weekend retreat near Mason City, Iowa put on by Campus Bible Fellowship. Over that ice-cold weekend we heard numerous testimonials from extremely satisfied ‘customers’ of one of the best-known Persons in the universe- God. Some claimed to have met Him as children; others as adults. There were both men and women, college students (like I was) and PhD professors, and a few other

folks in the group. The entire time my ears were filled with amazing and newto-me information about the Creator of our universe and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Needless to say I was taken aback at the overwhelming excitement of all these totally-convinced believers. And I asked questions, keeping two Iowa State students up until 5 in the morning, and having them answer everything I wondered about. They also showed me in the Bible where the references were to support what they said.

Even being raised in a church, much of this was new to me. My grasp of the Bible was that it was a large ‘decoration’ in the front of the church building on an altar beneath a large decorative cross. I had never read much of it, and certainly thought that my ongoing college education would equip me nicely for the life ahead of me. To my surprise, our Saturday evening speaker shared from Colossians 2:3, a verse about Jesus which states “…in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Wow! Could it be true that ALL wisdom and knowledge were tied up in the Person of Jesus? The man argued this very convincingly.

I might not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but I wanted to find out the veracity of his claims. On the way home from this retreat I could not get out of my mind all of the satisfying answers I had heard presented about my need to establish a personal relationship with

Jesus Christ, both to insure my admittance into Heaven one day, and to guarantee me an abundant life here on earth the rest of my days. How could I go wrong by asking?

If this was a bunch of baloney I would figure it out soon enough, I reasoned, and if it were all true, I was missing out on a life that one can only dream of.

So right there in my 1938 Chrysler Royal driving down Highway 66 heading home to Zearing, Iowa on the night of 2-14-1970 with my eyes wide open, this farm boy bowed his heart and surrendered my life to Jesus, and that’s when the fireworks began, in a very good way. My heart was flooded with the peace of God, and thus began a near-50 year journey of joy and complete satisfaction with my Savior. I cannot say I have come anywhere close to understanding ALL wisdom and knowledge, but I can say with confidence that my Lord has never failed me nor let me down, and I have had NO disappointment in Him. I can tell you (if you have ears to hear), that you are missing out terribly if you only have religion. Relationship is 100 times better, plus it lasts forever. The best treasure you can ever find is a personal relationship with the God of the universe. How do you get to this place in life? Romans 10:9-13 reads as follows: “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart

man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.

For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon Him; for whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”

If you can fog a mirror, God offers you Himself. Don’t put it off any longer- today is the best day to find out for yourself that what I am telling you is true and meant for you. After you make this commitment, come join our church family for nourishing your new faith.

Veterans Vet Connect Event A Success

he Vet Connect Resource Fair for Veterans & Families held March 2nd at Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Loveland was a great success. The first of its kind regional event, hosted by Qualified Listeners, consisted of over 40 agencies and organizations experienced in providing assistance to Veterans, including prime employers who focus on hiring Veterans.

“The response we’ve received from the Veterans attending the event has been overwhelming”, commented Greg Goettsch, Founder and Executive Director of Qualified Listeners. “We provided vetted resources to the Veterans for them to know what services are available, the VA was there to answer their questions, they had access to large employers for career opportunities, but most importantly we wanted them to know they are not alone and there are many who care. he VA provides excellent service to many Veterans, but 60% of Veterans are not in the VA System. Many do not qualify because of income, they don’t have a service-related disability, or because of the time period they served.

Healthy Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Cold and Flu

C

hinese herbal medicine is not “once size fits all�. There are many formulas to choose from that treat the exact type of cold or flu symptoms. For example, Chuan Xin Lian treats the illness that begins with a VERY sore throat followed by coughing and phlegm. Additionally, there are several Chinese medical techniques that have been scientifically proven to increase the white blood cell count and reduce inflammation, thereby coaxing your system to effectively fight illness.

Here are three of my absolute favorite techniques that do not involve inserting an acupuncture needle: Cupping: placement of suction cups assists in moving blood and fluids, expel phlegm and improve Lung function. This method is safe for infants, children and adults.

Sesshokushen: there’s no other word for this, so let me briefly explain! With one acupuncture needle, the practitioner quickly taps all over the surface of the skin. People find this oddly relaxing and children sometimes feel ticklish.

This Japanese technique stimulates the production of white blood cells and reduces inflammation. This method is safe for infants, children and adults.

Moxibustion: some people are familiar with this from experience, or from seeing it done in a movie. ‘Moxa’ is the shortened term for this procedure of placing a light and fluffy herb at specific points on the body, then lighting it with an incense stick. It is taken off when the

person feels that it is hot, as this is not for burning the skin. In some cases, the herb is placed on the end of the needle. However, in order to obtain an immune response, it is necessary to burn this herb directly on the skin. Before and after research has proven an increase in the white blood cell count only when performing moxibustion directly on the skin. This is safe for adults of any age. Unless a child is very weak, moxibustion is not for children.

When a person comes into the office reporting that they “feel run down� like they’re going to get a cold, then I do all three of these techniques and suggest an herbal formula that will strengthen the immune system. If caught in the very early stages of illness, it is most likely that this person escapes the cold altogether. If the person comes in during the throes of illness, these techniques and acupuncture will assist their system into fighting it off more vigorously, and prevent it from progressing more deeply. When people get the same cold repeatedly, I suggest a few acupuncture treatments, and also recommend individual-specific food and herbal medicine in order to help get their immune s y s t e m strong again.

ime For Change Personal Training and Fitness Group started a 10 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge at the beginning of January 2019.

The purpose of this challenge is to improve your overall health by losing fat, gaining lean muscle mass, and to help improve your nutrition and water intake.

It’s not too late to focus on your health again. Take action starting today to create a plan for yourself by thinking about these questions: How will you start eating better and where will you workout? Who is going to do this with you? What are some short term goals? Who/what do you need to say “no� to in order to give yourself the gift of fitness?

Here are 5 things that will help you in your fitness plans: 1. Prioritize - People often say they’re too busy and don’t have time to workout or eat healthy. We’re all busy, but you don’t want the possible chronic health issues to take hold and wreak havoc in your life from inactivity. Prioritize your workouts and put them on the calendar. Plan ahead with healthy meals, create a shopping list, and choose to make healthy choices as often as you can.

2. Consistency comes from a strong ‘Why’ and Community - My why is that I need to stay fit for my health, and my family. I have a child with severe special

needs that will require my help every day for the rest of her life, so I need to remain strong and healthy for her and the rest of my family. I also have a community of people in my fitness groups that I look forward to working out with four times per week, and I know many of the ladies feel the same way about the camaraderie in my classes.

3. Natural Strengths and Weaknesses - Focus more on the many things you excel at and don’t get down on yourself if someone is better than you at something.

We need to avoid negative self-talk and comparing ourselves to others.

4. Try New Things - We are people of habit and get caught up in routines. If you feel bored or stuck in a rut, try learning a new skill, join my ladies only fitness group, or sign up for a fitness event in the area.

5. The Path To Success Will Not Be Straight, but there are less difficult paths to get there. Find a coach or trainer that will guide and help you attain your goals faster. I’m a Mobile Personal Trainer that can come to your home to help you with your fitness goals.

Veteran and Family Class Offered May is Mental Health Month. Carbon Valley Rotary is hosting a Mental Health First Aid Class Thursday, May 16, from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, 7 Park Place in Firestone. The class is will focus on Veterans and some of their issues based on their experience while serving in the military. Veterans, their family members, and Veteran supporters at any level are encouraged to attend.

The class is interactive and designed to learn how to recognize and respond to challenges within the Veteran Community.

American Legion Celebrates 100 Years!

The American Legion is the oldest veterans group in America. A lot of people don’t know that. Unfortunately, many people, including current members, don’t know what the Legion stands for and what it has done for our vets and this country.

According to their website, today’s membership stands at over 2 million in more than 13,000 posts worldwide. New 911 Technology RapidLite All of Frederick’s 911 calls are handled by Weld County Public Communications, and they’ve just added a new tool called RapidLite to better locate 911 callers! If a mobile caller can’t communicate their location clearly, the call drops or the dispatcher can’t locate a caller, the mobile caller’s phone number is entered into RapidLite’s database; pinpointing the caller’s location within milliseconds. Dispatchers can look up a phone number for up to 10 minutes after it’s received.

Seniors Need Resources in Carbon Valley

A

s we age, many of us need resources to support us as we age in place. Here in Carbon Valley, the need for resources is no different than any other area. This year, the inaugural Carbon Valley Older Adult Resource Fair will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 9:30am-1:30pm. This fair was initiated by a group of individuals who meet monthly at the Carbon Valley Regional Library where they share community resources with one another and think of ways to support southwest Weld. This event will highlight available resources for older adults in the community.

During the resource fair, there will be two speakers and a large room with resource tables, staffed by local vendors who offer services to older adults. Light refreshments will be provided and the event is free to the public.

First speaker is at 10:15am - Attorney, Clinton Carlisle “Estate Planning: What You Need to Know.”

As we age, we need to get our legal matters in order. Come hear attorney, Clinton Carlisle, speak about what you need to consider. Clinton will discuss wills, durable powers of attorney and health care decisions and why it is so important to plan ahead.

Second speaker is at 11:30am –Gerontologist, Jessica O’Leary “Caregiver Survivor Tips: Putting Your Oxygen Mask on First” Many of us will care for loved ones at some point in our lives. Caregiving is not easy. It can be complicated and exhausting.

ity staff will begin the annual clean-up at Hillside Cemetery on Monday, April 15, 2019. Christmas blankets, wreaths, unsightly artificial flowers and wreaths will be removed during the clean-up process. Please remove any items of importance before April 14, 2019. A maximum of two single shepherds are allowed, directly to the side of and over-hanging the memorial. Inappropriately placed shepherds hooks will be removed and stored for pick-up. A maximum of 6 ornaments or decorations, in addition to the shepherds hooks, are allowed on the monument foundation and/or base of headstone. Excessive pieces will be removed and stored for pick-up. Solar lights are not permissible and will be removed. Please be advised that nothing may be attached in any manner to the surface of the columbarium. All such items will be removed.

Copies of these documents may be required and they must be delivered in accordance with the contract terms. The same goes for the HOA information, if that applies.

In most contracts, the buyer has an opportunity to perform physical inspections of the property. These must be coordinated by the Realtor, as well as any follow up questions or negotiations. The inspection is the most common reason that a contract terminates, so having an experienced Realtor on your side is critical. In addition, property insurance and any home warranty policies must be taken care of.

The loan process is an ongoing and often very time-consuming process for the Realtor. The appraisal, survey, verifications and other items need to be addressed during the process.

Appraisals can be a cause of great anxiety in today’s market because of increasing values. The Realtor tries to provide the best information possible about current sales, so that the appraiser can do the best job possible.

on most newer properties. However, an encroachment or a variation in the property size can be a major problem for the lender and buyer. Steps must then be taken to resolve the concern prior to closing.

If a property is on well and septic, the Realtor must gather additional information to make sure the proper permits have been issued and take care of the transfer of ownership. There may be testing required to make sure the well and septic systems are up to standards.

Sometimes the property or buyer involved does not fit perfectly with the lender’s ideal criteria, so further explanation and information must be gathered. If problems are not solved in a timely manner, there can be delays or even a termination of the contract.

Finally, the closing must be coordinated. This entails much more than just setting a time at which the buyer, seller, Realtors, title company and lender can all agree to meet. If the loan approval comes in at the last minute and the closing is at the end of the month, it can be a real juggling act. Often last minute documentation must be obtained or change accommodated.

After all of this work, time, worry, effort, frustration and follow-up, there is usually a successful closing. Most Realtors are problem solvers at heart, and they get to put this skill to work on most transactions.

aturday, March 6th, the Colorado Longs Peak Sons of the American Revolution (COSAR) heard a presentation on the Diary of a World War II B17 Radio Gunner. Missing in Action twice and a Prisoner of War once, Sergeant Robert S. Magee’s experiences were retold by his daughter, Connie Masson, a Carbon Valley Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) member.

After the presentation, 20 members of COSAR that were veteran’s, active military or first responders were given Pocket Stars (which they are holding in the picture) along with a poem shown here to honor them and thank them for their service.

4th Veterans Stand Down Day

O

n February 22nd RSVP hosted Weld County Veterans Stand Down Day at the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection Community Room.

This special event is designed to be of service and assistance to all military veterans.

The event was a success in that 42 Veterans signed in. It was a team effort; as several area agencies and organizations joined to help Veterans with VA appointments, Social Security, Medical issues, Counseling services Red Cross information and provide some basic needs just to name a few services. But more important it was a community showing Veterans we care.

A special thanks to the local businesses for their support which include 1st Bank of Firestone, King Sooper of Firestone, Starbucks, Georgia Boys, Ziggi’s, Daylight Donuts, Black Jack Pizza, Cimarran Liquors, Peel Pizza, Home Depot, Domino’s Pizza, Santiago’s. Their overall effort provided food and beverages to all in attendance.

Make Flatirons Kennel Club an Important Part of Your Community

T

he Flatirons Kennel Club aka FKC has been an active part of the greater Boulder county area since it was established in 1963 and is a member of the American Kennel Club which was formed in 1884. The Club follows the rules and regulations of the AKC and has maintained the status of All Breed Club in good standing since its beginning.

Flatirons Kennel Club works extensively with local 4-H Clubs and provides opportunities to volunteer to assist with the dog shows. The Club hosts an all-breed show the first weekend in June each year. This year they are including a Pee-Wee competition for children 5-9 years of age. This gives 4-H Club members the opportunity to train their family dogs as a 4-H project. Classes and competitions are also offered and include National Owner Handler classes, Junior Handler Series of competitions and how to Steward at the dog shows. The Club offers scholarships for juniors to cover training costs of the 6-8 week handling classes.

The goal of the FKC is to encourage the public to become involved in the shows and ultimately become a member of the club. They believe encouraging youth participation and public attendance to the local dog shows is an important part of being in the community. The club membership guidelines include inexpensive annual dues combined with events hosted throughout the year to keep the club funded and operational. These events include supporting the AKC Reunite Program that provides a mobile rescue and trailer for displaced dogs in the event of a natural disaster such as fires or floods.

E

rin Martinez, it is unlikely you would ever have heard her name if not for a horrific local tragedy. Firestone, Colorado, exactly two years ago, April 17, 2017, odorless natural gas escaped a neglected leaky gas flow line sitting just yards from the Martinez home. After collecting in their basement, the gas exploded leveling the two-story home. Four people were in the home at the time. Two physically survived, two others did not.

Maintaining her silence and recovering for two years, survivor Erin Martinez is now using her voice to support legislation enacting new safety protocols.

“I feel a responsibility to hopefully keep this from ever happening again,” Martinez stated at a recent news conference supporting Colorado Senate Bill 181.

SB 181 is now weaving its way through the lengthy and sometimes confusing process of becoming law. Starting at twenty-five pages, some changes have been made to the original text. Basically, the bill will accomplish two things.

• It will update decision making processes that influence when and how oil and gas companies receive permits to extract oil or gas in new locations.

Local governmental bodies will have new authority in setting rules for extraction activity within their jurisdiction.

The new law will also modify the structure and duties of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC).

• Second, the bill sets the protection of public safety, health, welfare and the environment as a priority. It sets protocol for the industries to work more closely with existing environmental agencies to better manage air quality control by minimizing methane, hydrocarbon, and other dangerous emissions, and complying with existing environmental regulations.

The full bill provides extensive detail on how the health and safety of Colorado residents will be put at less risk.

Science and Technology Imagine Charter School at Firestone

A

t Imagine Charter School at Firestone, we believe that technology has a purpose. We make sure that students have meaningful experiences with technology instead of using screen time for learning purposes. Teachers and staff work diligently to do this. This past month we had over 20 students attend the regional science and engineering fair to present their research. From our students who went, we came home with 14 awards and one student received a first place award.

From these awards, we have six students moving on to the state fair! This experience would not have been possible without our Science teacher, Karie Slade and our Math teacher Keri Aasmundstad, as well as many volunteers who took the time to approve the projects. Our six going to state are Tharind Bopearachchigedon, Jared Ingmire, Emma Tone, Tashie Kuberski, Kaiden Box, and Cullen Aasmundstad.

Evers, has pioneered our 2nd annual Innovations day at Imagine Firestone as well.

Through partnerships with community businesses, schools, parents and teachers, she has orchestrated a day for our 5th-8th grade students to experience hands-on technology and engineering to build momentum for future exploration. Students are learning about the different areas in which innovation and computer science have impact. They are practicing design thinking through projects and experiences developed by the partners. The day is broken down into sessions that the students go to in which they get to experience things such as architecture, construction, aerospace through partnerships with Esri, Dattera, Hype innovation, Cuningham Group, Ball Aerospace, SVVSD Innovation Centers, Intel, Agrium, Elementum, Google, HP and The Colorado School of Mines.

embers of the Carbon Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) met recently with Lesha Baker, Coal Ridge Middle School Librarian, and with Julie Lyddan and the 8th grade team to award monies to be used for the purchase of library books focused on the American Revolution era.

In promoting the DAR mission of Education, Patriotism, and Historical Preservation, we support partnerships with schools in fostering literacy and awareness of this historical period of time in America.

During our visit, we had the honor of presenting a Pocket Star to teacher Christy Clark-Weese, a veteran, as a reminder that she is not forgotten and to thank her for her service. Ms. Clark-Weese dedicated 20 years of service to the Colorado Army National Guard and retired as a First Sergeant.

he newly formed Firestone Free Thinkers 4-H Club has exploded with enthusiasm! After The previous article published in the CVCR the Club met with approximately 30 excited people who were interested in getting down to business by electing officers and presenting a busy agenda for upcoming events.

The group elected the following officers: President, Kayla Steen; Vice President, Phoebe Jonas; Secretary: Austin Ledgerwood; Treasurer, Kaley Ledgerwood. After electing officers the members decided to enter a float in the Firestone 4th of July Parade and also reserve a booth in the Firestone 4th of July Celebration. Discussions will be ongoing to finalize the plans for both items on the agenda.

Monthly meetings are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month at the High Plains Library in Firestone. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this fast growing group is invited to attend the next meeting. Woodworking meetings are also taking place each month at various locations. FHS Students Help at Night to Shine FHS Unified Basketball

rederick High School students and alumni volunteered at the Night to Shine, hosted by Rocky Mountain Christian Church. FHS students welcomed the guests, walked them down the red carpet, and cheered for them as part of the paparazzi! The girls’ basketball team, the boys’ basketball team, and the cheer team from Frederick braved the cold and cheered on all the guests! Our older FHS students and our alumni were excited to be “buddies” and floaters and to help out in other ways during the dance.

n March 2nd the FHS Unified Basketball Team wrapped up their season at the SVVSD Tournament at Erie High School. On Friday the Frederick High School student body honored the players with a sendoff. The FHS students lined the athletic hallway, the FHS Band played the school fight song and the Unified Players made their way down the hall with hundreds of their classmates cheering them on!

The Unified team was then treated to an End-of Season Party hosted by the FHS Booster Club. A special thank you goes out to Black Jack Pizza, Mahnke Auto Body and Booster members for donating the refreshments!

The Unified Team had one home game on January 17th. The FHS Booster Club, with a generous donation from Christina Clark - New York Life Insurance Company, hosted a “Pack The Stands Event.” FHS students were treated to free hotdogs and water as they came into the game to cheer on the Unified Team. “Unified Sports” is an inclusive sports program that unites and empowers individuals with and without intellectual disabilities.

n March 2ndthe Frederick High School Thespians wrapped up their performance of A Doll’s House – original by Henrik Ibsen, adapted by FHS teacher Brandon Coon. The Students did an exceptional job under the directorship of their new drama teacher, Emily Ferguson and assistant director and student Tessa Lyons.

Kendall Lecumberry, Conor Mc Daniel, Cienna Engdahl, Charles Juarez and Isaac Palmer put forth a great performance over the three night run. They drew in the audience with intense and believable characters. Jade Cochran, Kayla Lorimer and Jamie Gagnon provided strong support role performances.

All FHS productions involve students in every aspect from set design and construction, costumes, make up, lighting, sound, program/media and leadership. For this play, Kelsea Sibold was asst. tech director, Zack Briggs – stage manager with Thomas Beeker as his assistant.

MamaCita’s Musings

M

om, Momma, Mommy, Mom, Muhm…Those words are like the first permanent breath of ownership our children cry over us and it turns us in to puddles over and over again. I couldn’t wait to hear it out of my boys’ mouths. Let me describe them.

The first one was quiet; a dream baby.

Turns out this was actually just hiding the fact that he had a partial chromosomal deletion which would later prove to be the cause of his special needs. Over time, he fell further and further behind. He was operating on Pacific Time when the other kids were clearly on Eastern Standard Time.

I should have known he was a Californian at heart because he had curly blonde hair, big blue eyes, a love for water, and was all peace, love, and light! I wondered if I would ever hear his sweet little voice call me ‘Mommy’. I pleaded with God to let me hear his voice, his thoughts. 17 years this sweet guy spent in speech therapy.

My second one was a pistol! He came out kickin’, screamin’, bossy, demanding and ready to be a grown up. He started talking way too soon…and without a filter.

Yikes. He was like a salty, brutally honest, little old man. I think his only saving grace was that he was cute. He was unpredictably fun and outrageous!

Remember me saying I begged God to let me hear my oldest son’s voice? Yeah, well, I loved it…for like the first 10 years. Today? I still hear variations of Mom constantly and now all I want is for him to be quiet once in a while! He LOVES to talk! He has become my ‘Lord, Bless his heart’ child. I tell God almost daily that I’m sorry I needed 10 time

outs because if I heard ‘Mom’ one more time I was going to go nuttier than a porta potty at a peanut festival!

My second little guy, as he got older just wasn’t satisfied with the boring old ‘Mom’ moniker. He needed something saucier to match his personality. One day as a cousin of mine was trying to get him to say ‘Cynthia’, the best he could do was ‘Cita’. Which then morphed in to ‘Mama Cita’ (say it real fast, all one word, yeah, that’s it)…It stuck. So, I am MamaCita and I have my fair share of musings. I plan on sharing my silly stories in hopes you will either see yourself in them and laugh or not see yourself in them and laugh. Either way, I will have increased your health for the day by giving you laughter. We are lacking in that area.

To wrap this up, I hope these articles bring you laughter, hope, and the courage to live a vulnerable and authentic life because when our souls are full and fully loved, we can pour in to others and build them up (including our children). Here’s to encouraging one another on this crazy ride!

Cynthia Christensen is a local writer, Realtor, and Mom, not in that order. She lives in Platteville with her two boys, Kasey and Noah, and Chihuahua named Tuffy. Pertaining to motherhood, she has been in every stage with her boys now, as they are now at the end of their teenage years and she has penned memories all along the way. She has kept these in a keepsake book for her kids and future generations titled ‘MamaCita’s Book of Wisdom’. She is now opening that book up to add humor and insight to others’ lives.

t was just about two months shy of our first wedding anniversary when this very question was shouted to me from the Sunday morning program of LifeBridge Church in Longmont. I still remember my heart leaping out of my chest as if someone just read my mind... and I felt ashamed and dirty. I hated marriage.

Almost one year prior, we were standing in front of our family and friends, claiming vows we didn’t mean through gritted teeth. Well, I guess he meant them, but I certainly did not. In fact, at one point during my vows, I leaned in closely so no one could hear me and told him he had exactly five years to make me happy or I was going to leave. The truth is, I never wanted marriage but, in my mind, I had this idea that our daughter (who was 14mo at the time) would have wanted us married.

We had an extremely difficult first year.

Actually, that was our third year - together. We had known each other for two months when we found out our daughter was on her way. I was 16 years old and he was 20. Neither of us had any idea what we were doing but we knew she was here for a reason. Over the course of those twelve months, we had met, started dating, got pregnant, moved in together, I dropped out of high school, I signed back up for high school, he had a huge job transition, and we brought life into the world! Honestly, there is so much more to it, but it really is a long story! The point is, we have not met many people who had such a rough beginning together.

In those three years we fought loud and hard over every last issue, especially non-issues. Neither of us knew how to be a healthy couple and what each of our “place” was in the relationship. Not only were we trying to find ourselves, but we were trying to figure out what it looked like to be together and happy. There was no happy. It felt like we were on a roller coaster that has suddenly stopped at the highest point, upside down, all while trying to raise a human. How were we going to teach her how to be a productive member of society if we couldn’t get our own bearings?

The program at church that day got my attention. Something leaped inside of me. I turned to him and proclaimed boldly that if he didn’t take this class with me, I would be gone before the first anniversary. I meant it.

And he knew it. Somehow God worked in his heart too and he reluctantly joined me.

The class was Dynamic Marriage taught by our favorite married people in the world, Mike and Karrie. They were our instructors for the next 13+ marriage classes and we grew close. Karrie even made us a cake and we celebrated our first

wedding anniversary in marriage class surrounded by a bunch of other beautiful messes. I don’t know that we would have been so changed if it weren’t for them.

They came along side us and believed in us and wouldn’t let us give up. We are forever thankful to them!

The only thing the first class did was show us that there is hope and purpose to all of this mess. We found ourselves so hungry for wisdom and for other couples that could support us and encourage us that we committed to joining a marriage class every fall, Spring and summer (think: college semesters) for the next five years. A lot of those classes actually turned out to be HIS idea!

At the end of the last class we took with them, they released us to be marriage mentors ourselves. The irony is not lost on me. That two mean, lost, misfits could ever become influential in other marriages is nothing short of a miracle!

Rescued people rescue people.

Healed people heal people. We believe this with every last atom of our being.

We 100% could have never guessed that THIS is marriage! THIS is what we get to do for the rest of our lives! We GET TO love each other with a grace and passion and vulnerability that is NOT displayed in social culture! We get to teach people HOW to be married. We get to walk alongside other struggling couples and teach them proper communication skills to be able to genuinely love each other. We get to see people HEALED. So. How is your marriage? Is it everything you desire? Do you believe that you can have a fulfilled marriage? Are you ready to commit to healing what’s broken in your marriage?
