Firestone’s A Cake Comes True Offers Boutique Style Treats with other boutique style treats. Lisa explains, “We all need mitochondria to isa Herrera, owner/operator and Lisa is an artist in every sense of the word. provide energy to all the necessary parts of Lprofessional cake decorator anxiously Each cake is artwork. next door to Starbucks at Hwy 119 and I-25 E. Frontage Road. “Hopefully, the doors open mid-August,” she says. “There are many details to work out with the Town of Firestone, construction and the overall implementation of a commercial business.” The step-by-step process can be grueling and frustrating, but the investment is worth it in the long run. The quality and beauty of Lisa’s cakes speak for themselves. She specializes in premium custom wedding cakes and has built her name on them. “People go to a wedding for two specific reasons; to see the bride in her dress and see and taste the wedding cake. I make my living on wedding cakes,” says Lisa. She promises, however, the storefront will have something for everyone! Yes, you can walk in and purchase a slice of cake for an afternoon treat or something for that evening’s dessert. Understandably, most people don’t need a custom wedding cake, so Lisa will be offering custom made celebration cakes and she has a variety of cakes in her “Simple Choice Collection” for pre-designed, semicustomizable cakes for birthdays, baby showers and other events. While you won’t find traditional cupcakes, you will be able to experience her version of the pint size cakes, along
her sketches to the finished product; her process is amazing. And Lisa wants her clients to feel amazing during the WHOLE process as well. I’ve heard her cake tastings are quite the event. Lisa “does it up!” for her clients. A very exciting part of this new venture includes classes! Lisa is sharing her expertise in the art of all things cake; decorating, flower design, sculpturing, sugar work, and more. Sign up for her newsletter to receive the class schedule. Her Instagram is worth following too as it shows her exquisite cakes. From traditional to upside down hanging cakes; the photos are jaw-dropping. We can only print a few here so make sure to check out her social media pages. “I could not do this without Dennis,” Lisa says of her husband, Dennis, photographer of her beautiful creations! They are Firestone residents and have five children and a niece between them. “Families come in all shapes and sizes,” says Lisa. “Family is the most important thing to us.” Over the years, the Herrera family has experienced many situations that most people never know in a lifetime. They have an older child on the spectrum, while their younger daughter, Bella, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Mitochondrial Myopathy.
over time. She was weak and eventually lost the ability to walk and her neck muscles could not hold her head up.” On January 25, 2012, Bella was on a school bus with an inexperienced staff member. The staff on the bus did not secure Bella properly and she suffered severe injuries during the bus ride, which caused her death the next day. Bella was seven. Lisa has an inner strength not readily found in most people. I am drawn to her and her courage. She influences my own determination and I am better for knowing her. Courage comes in as many forms as the individuals in her family. For a small statured woman, she is strong; in her views, her commitments and her dreams. She is a force to be sure. Love. I think I choose the word love to describe the overall feeling I get from Lisa. And zero judgment. Did these character traits come before or as a result of Bella’s life? I have not known Lisa long enough to say. What I am confident of is that Lisa takes each person, personally. Individually. U n i q u e l y . Everyone is welcome in her business and her
life. Lisa welcomes all couples looking for their special wedding cake. “Everyone deserves to love whom they love,” she says. Lisa’s experiences have taken her to the Capital for changing laws after Bella’s death and to television to compete on the Food Network. She’s on the cover of prestigious magazines and the winner of many awards. I25 Corridor residents are blessed to have her talents. A Cake Come True is located at 11169 E I25 Frontage Rd, Suite B, in Firestone at the Hwy 119 and I25 interchange. Instagram @ acakecometrue www.facebook. com/acakecometrue You can always reach her through her website www. ACakeComeTrue.com or by emailing her directly at Lisa@ACakeComeTrue. com. Reach Out for Rescue
I
t’s nearly three in the morning and because of medication, I cannot sleep. I’m too tired to get out of bed and do something a bit productive like work but not tired enough to drift off to la la land. After reading for several hours, I finally put on a head set to listen to music. My sista suggested I download a cd by Lauren Daigle, so I did. It’s called Look Up Child. Within the first three lines of the second song, I am weeping. The title of the song is Rescue. Many of you will weep as well. Life can be so hard. So hard. We wonder if there is “anyone” out there who really cares. Anyone who can rescue us from the traumas and tragedies we are experiencing. Our lives shred us, at least internally.
The lyrics to Rescue: You are not hidden There’s never been a moment You were forgotten You are not hopeless Though you have been broken Your innocence stolen I hear you whisper underneath your breath I hear your SOS, your SOS I will send out an army to find you In the middle of the darkest night It’s true, I will rescue you There is no distance That cannot be covered Over and over You’re not defenseless I’ll be your shelter I’ll be your armor I hear you whisper underneath your breath
I hear your SOS, your SOS I will send out an army to find you In the middle of the darkest night It’s true, I will rescue you I will never stop marching to reach you In the middle of the hardest fight It’s true, I will rescue you I hear the whisper underneath your breath I hear you whisper you have nothing left I will send out an army… Many people put all confidence in statues like Buddha. Others worship their “smart” phone as if it will rescue them from a mugging or protect them from a drop in the DOW. As in days of old, others believe in the fertility goddess or maybe even dance for the clouds so the sky will rain on crops. Probably the most worshiped god of the earth is SELF. We humans seem to believe we have the power to protect our children from harm, keep intruders out of our homes, make enough money to purchase these EXPENSIVE Colorado homes, save for a rainy day, and have enough insurance coverage for all the rest of the unexpected crisis in life. Until… …your child dies, your home is robbed or burns to the ground, an illness (even with insurance) drains your savings. There are multitudes of unexpected, unplanned events that can destroy our best laid plans. Ask me. My daughter, nine-yr.-old Alisha died after being hit by a car in 1990. In 2002, my oldest son, Jason was killed in a work-related accident. Since 1995, we’ve had multiple floods in our home which insurance did not cover. Our vehicles have

been vandalized and disease has settled into many of my grandchildren and children. Where is my power? How come, no matter what I do, I cannot stop these events from occurring? I think of all the years I tried to figure out stuff by myself. Important life changing issues like if I should leave an abusive husband or go into debt to buy a reliable car. I think of all the bad decisions I made and all the consequences I’ve suffered, and my children have suffered because of those choices. I’ve felt like I was alone most of my life; whether with family or friends. But since 2012, my life has taken a drastic change in that I now KNOW I am not alone, nor have I ever been. What caused the drastic change? How did I get to a place where I KNOW, I KNOW, I am not alone, and fear does not dictate every decision I ponder? Time of course. Nothing happens overnight for me. But, what did occur to make such a change in my whole being? I decided to take a chance. I wanted to believe I served a purpose on this earth. I wanted to believe there was actually something more than pain and trauma and hard work just to be alive on this planet. I sat alone and thought, meditated, pondered, prayed. I picked up the Bible and read some words; a few at first and then more. I let the meanings of the words saturate my dried-up soul and found refreshment and encouragement and motivation. It’s sad to think of all the decades I spent “alone” when I wasn’t alone. Crying myself to sleep…waking up more tired than when I went to bed…living in fear of more death…working, working, working, to pay bills that kept piling up. I was spent. I had nothing left to give to anyone, even my children. But that is water under the bridge. Those days of defeat no longer harass me as before. No matter the storms in my life, and there have been many. Or the sorrow or difficulties…I know I do not do them alone. And I am so protected and loved. To be seen, to be known is a wonderfully satisfying, comforting, secure place to be. I don’t ever want to be anywhere else, EVER, in my life. There IS “someone” who sees us, hears us, loves us. It took most of my life to understand that I truly am not alone, that He loves me, He hears me, He sees me. Jesus is not a fictitious character as some would have us believe. Ask yourself, “What if He is REAL?”

Yes, Jesus is LORD, but He is much more…He is my friend. He is your friend even if you don’t know it yet. My cousin, Carma, told me about a book that is changing my life, again and for the better. It’s by Dutch Sheets, called “The Pleasure of His Company.” Amazing writing sharing how much the GOD of this universe desires our company… my company…your company…what a concept. So, to end this, let me quote the last paragraph of this fantastic read: “Reach for Him; He’ll reach back. Make Christ your magnificent obsession, Yahweh your papa, and Holy Spirit your daily companion. Never again settle for the substandard existence of a life lived without the pleasure of His company.”

Prayers for this Author Please Inside a Troubled Mind It’s midnight here, And I wish I was dead. I have no future, I have no friends.
Instead they send me somewhere else But I can’t get there from here ‘cause I don’t have help
Almost broke No future in site I want to leave this life Just curl up and die
Spotted memories Of days gone past. Of the good times had and thought would last.
I’m poor and lonely And I want to heal I need a friend Who’s heart can feel
I’m putting the word out For the means to an end A couple of pills Will be my last friend.
My mind is troubled, And I can’t find help. I cry a lot, Because of the hand I’ve been dealt.
I’m not violent or dangerous Just bitter and old A product of chaos Or so I’ve been told
I’ll give all I have left To achieve my last goal Heartbreak and humanity Has taken its toll
People get paid To pretend they care I’ve gone to mental health They don’t want me there
My heart cries out But nobody’s there I need comfort and guidance And someone who cares
I have a girlfriend I’ve never met Two years and counting She’s been the best
I’m to much to deal with And nothing to see When I show my illness They they want to flee
Days turn to weeks And weeks into years I can’t live like this anymore I’m hiding my tears

Poundfit w/Shylah: Being You, is Be-You-Tiful! “POUND Is an Epic way to get a good, effective full body workout and have a great time doing it! If you enjoy music, movement and Rhythm try this out!” says Pete Ditmon. hylah Hernandez, owner of Poundfit, says, “POUND is a cardio jam session inspired by infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. You become the music in a full body workout that combines yoga, Pilates, cardio, conditioning and strength training with ripstix (lightly weighted drumsticks). It’s for all fitness levels! POUND lets you cut loose, get an energy boost, improve your health and rock out!” She had her launch party the end of May. But before that… …Almost 7 years ago, Shylah was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The first two things she was told was her energy level may drop and it can be hard to lose weight. “I had a 6-month-old at the time and there was no way I could let this slow me down. I began exercising on a regular basis and posting on Facebook for accountability. Soon people were messaging me to motivate and help them. I was floored!” Shylah explained. Because she enjoys motivating and encouraging others, she decided she would love to professionally workout with others. She wanted something that anyone can do. Then POUND appeared in an ad. “I went to one class and I was hooked!” Too many people are not comfortable going to the gym and are afraid people are judging them. Shylah decided to make this a no drama, judgment free zone and when you leave, you feel like you can rock your day! The greatest thing about Pound is that it’s for everyBody, young and older.

T
when deciding whether to paint or stain the wood on your home’s exterior. Your choice should be based upon personal preference and the desired end result. Stains are used on exterior wood surfaces to enhance the grain and preserve or tint the natural color, revealing its natural beauty. While stain does have protective qualities, it doesn’t last as long as paint and doesn’t have the same reparative properties as paint. Paint doesn’t penetrate the wood the same as stain, but it does fill gaps and cracks and offers more protection against UV rays, rain and snow, so repainting usually isn’t required as often as restaining. Most stains are semitransparent or solid. Solid color stains are more opaque and will cover your grain but the texture of your wood will still show. There are a variety of colors offered in stain, yet there are thousands of paint colors available. If you decide to go with paint, it is more of
a ‘forever’ decision. It is easy to paint over stain. There is much more labor involved in staining wood that has been previously painted, so that project will be costlier than repainting. Materials are a small portion of the cost of painting, so starting with a good quality stain is a smart choice. Applying stain to wood siding will cost about the same as painting. Stain should be sprayed and then back-brushed to work it into the grain. Staining and varnishing weathered exterior doors can be labor intensive as there is often extensive sanding needed in the preparation phase to complete the job properly. The same goes with staining decks and railings - more prep involved, more labor. When do you re-stain? Before you think you need it. Once the stain is gone, wood strippers, cleaners, and brighteners are often needed along with power washing and sanding. There are may different types of stains available for different applications. Make sure your painting contractor knows which is best for your project.

Join Us: The Carbon Valley Travel Club!
I
t’s no secret that travel is good for us. Studies show even a weekend getaway improves our mental health, our relationships, and even our work life. Heading out to find new, exciting paths to cross is exactly what we need when it’s time to reset. But, what if you don’t know where to go? Haven’t found a good travel partner or enough free income? Perhaps, you’re just not a good planner, or the whole idea seems overwhelming. That’s what the Carbon Valley Travel Club is all about. It’s a place to meet like-minded travelers who enjoy talking about their adventures and planning for the next one. People searching for trip ideas or a group to travel with. It’s a great place to get travel advice, ask destination questions, or learn how to make a realistic vacation budget. The best part? You’ll do this with people in your community! I’ve noticed that, as the Carbon Valley has grown in the last 5 years, we haven’t done much to create new ways for people to meet within the community. Connecting with people of like-minded interests is difficult on our own.
A travel club solves that problem by gathering us together in one space. Starting in September, we offer monthly meetings and events to help you get to know travelers in your own neighborhood! We’re even planning a big, group trip to Scotland for Fall 2020! It’s time to look forward to your travel dreams, again. Maybe, with our help, you can make those dreams a reality. Our first meeting is September 12, 2019, at 6 pm. We’ll meet at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, in Firestone. Come on out and learn more about the Carbon Valley Travel Club! Follow us on Facebook @ carbonvalleytravelclub for updates.

Buying a New Built Home
D
o you need a Realtor representing you when buying a new home from a builder? Technically, no, but then you would have no one on your side. As a Buyer’s Agent, your Realtor is representing your interest when you purchase any home, new construction, resale or a repo, and in most every case, your agent is paid by the seller or listing brokerage. The sales price is no different if you are represented by your own agent or if you work directly with the builder’s staff at the sales office. With the price not being any different, and the builder paying your agent, there is no reason not to be represented when you are buying a new home from a builder. The builder’s sales staff are usually very knowledgeable and friendly, but they are looking out for the builder, not the buyer. In many cases, you can’t change what is being offered by the builder, but having another set of eyes involved on your side is beneficial in several ways. First, in helping you decide what options make sense for you to get, your Realtor can give you advice on what items will help down the road for resale, and which ones will not. That doesn’t mean that you won’t get a specific feature, but at least you will make an informed decision. Next, your Realtor will be there with you to go over the purchase contract and

help make sure you understand things. Builder contracts are written by the builder’s attorney for the benefit of the builder, so you need to make sure you understand things. You also have someone on your side all through the process so that you can ask questions or handle issues that can come up, such as if a particular option you contracted for was overlooked. When it is time for your walk through, your Realtor provides an extra set of eyes to pick up on punch list items that need to be taken care of. Then, prior to, and at closing, you have your agent to go over and discuss your settlement figures showing all the debits and credits and the amount you need to bring to buy the home. Most builders have specific processes for registering you and your Realtor, so be sure if you stop by a builder sales office to let them know who your Realtor is and then let your Realtor know what builder you stopped by. There is no substitute for having a professional on your team.

t might not be on your calendar, but Aug. 14 is Social Security Day. Since it was enacted on Aug. 14, 1935, Social Security has provided some financial support for millions of Americans during their retirement years. While Social Security benefits, by themselves, probably aren’t enough to enable you to retire comfortably, they can be a key part of your overall retirement income strategy – if you use them wisely. To help you make decisions about Social Security, you will need to answer these questions: • When should I start taking my benefits? You can take Social Security once you reach 62, but if you wait until your full retirement age, which will probably be between 66 and 67, you’ll get much bigger monthly checks, and if you wait until 70, you’ll get the biggest possible payments. Before deciding when to begin receiving your benefits, you’ll need to weigh a few factors, including your estimated longevity and your other sources of income. • How should I consider potential spousal benefits? If you are married, or if you’re divorced but were married for at least 10 years, you could receive up to half of your spouse’s full retirement benefit (offset by your own benefit, and reduced if you claim early). If you outlive your spouse, you could claim survivor benefits, which can provide either your own benefits or 100% of your deceased spouse’s, whichever is larger. Consequently, the higher-earning spouse might want to postpone taking benefits for as long as possible to maximize the survivor benefit. • How much can I earn without reducing my Social Security benefits? If you are younger than your full retirement age and you are receiving Social Security, the Social Security Administration will withhold $1 from your benefits for each $2 you earn over a certain threshold (which,
in 2019, is $17,640). For the year you reach your full retirement age, your benefits could be withheld by $1 for every $3 you earn over $46,920. But once you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without your benefits being withheld, although your benefits could still be taxed, depending on your income. • How much of my pre-retirement income will Social Security replace? Generally speaking, you should expect Social Security to replace slightly more than a third of your pre-retirement income. However, the higher your income during your working years, the lower the replacement value of Social Security will be. • What other sources of retirement income should I develop? Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. You may want to consult with a financial professional, who can look at your entire retirement income picture and recommend moves to help you achieve the lifestyle you’ve envisioned for your later years. Keep in mind that your decisions about Social Security filing strategies should always be based on your specific needs and health considerations. For more information, visit the Social Security Administration website at socialsecurity.gov. One final word: You may have concerns about the stability of Social Security. While no one can predict the future, many potential solutions exist to put the program on more solid footing. Consequently, try to focus on the actions you can control.

Food for the Soul: Christian, Are You Properly Armored?
M
ost of us agree that we live in an “evil day”. Unless you are OK with things like terrorism, out-of-control drug use, rampant sexual license, awful crimes committed daily and the like, not to mention worldwide unbelief in the God of creation, you must be one who sometimes despairs over the state of chaos around the globe. What are we to do if we call ourselves believers in the grace and mercy and power of the Lord Jesus Christ? One answer to this is found in Ephesians 6:13, where we read “Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” The oft-discussed but little used ‘armor’ spoken of here tells Christians they can successfully live their lives and be found standing at the end IF they abide by God’s teaching in this passage. One thing is abundantly clear when you read in context; He
gives us NO armor for our backside- we’re expected to be playing offense more than defense. Let’s dig a little deeper and find some help to be on the winning side in the war for souls. In actual physical warfare, every military person hopes to have the edgemaximum protection from harm plus maximum offensive advantage over his enemy. But we are told the warfare for a believer in Christ is not against flesh and blood; the enemy we face is called “spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Over the years I had understood God’s armor for me was pictured by a Roman soldier ready for battle. His is a strong image if the battle is physical, but NOT if it is a spiritual one. I now believe that a better picture to grasp the immensity of God’s power for me and to me is the picture of Jesus with a lamb over His shoulders hanging on tightly to its
legs. Some of you reading this are shocked because you, like me, have seen the Roman soldier image all of our lives as THE proper explanation. So why is this a better illustration? We are told in verse 10 to “be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.” In other words, winning this life-long fight is about reliance on God, the Warrior who saves. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. The physically puniest saint can resist the most powerful demon with God’s help. Our strength lies in the Lord of Hosts. God can overcome our enemies without our help, but we cannot so much as defend ourselves without His strong arm. Read Psalms 59:16, 17 for a clear Old Testament clarification of where our strength comes from. Then read Psalms 60:11, 12 for reinforcement of this fact. William Gurnall wrote 350 years ago “He that was willing to expend His Son’s blood to gain you, will not deny His power to keep you. And how must God needs love that creature whom He carried so long in the womb of His eternal purpose?” When we receive Christ as Lord and Savior He gets a firm grip on our lives, and
keeps it. God takes us out of spiritual Egypt and starts us on our march toward heaven. And it is a dangerous environment through which we must pass, full of challenges. How can we survive the war? I Peter 1:5 gives the answer: “We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.” Gurnall adds this thought: “The power of God is that shoulder on which Christ carries His sheep home. These everlasting arms of His strength are those eagle’s wings, upon which the saints are both tenderly and securely conveyed to glory.” The battle belongs to the Lord. Though multitudes of evil ones stand against us, remember thisone Almighty is more than many mighties. Jim pastors Abundant Life Church at 4380 Highway 66. We are proud to offer a variety of massage modalities to choose from because this allows our clients to find the type of massage to meet their needs and improve or maintain their physical and mental well-being. This may mean that a combination of different modalities will be used with-in a session: Relaxation Massage consists of a repetition of light gliding strokes of even pressure and is used to induce feelings of relaxation, identify areas of tension, enhance circulation, lower stress levels and create a sense of calmness and overall well-being. Worship Space Needed
T
he Carbon Valley Church of Christ is seeking a space to rent for use on Sundays. The church currently meets at one of two locations: The Carbon Valley Library or the Comfort Suites. Here is how you can help. Do you own or know of a local business that is closed on Sundays that may be interested in renting out a space for worship and Bible class? Three hours on Sunday mornings would be sufficient. The church is currently averaging between 20-30 people, and the space would need to accommodate some growth. The church welcomes ideas from the community. Please contact Clayton Johnson through email or phone: claypj@gmail.com, 720-438-5430.

“ For those of you who are unaware, I was diagnosed with lymphoma about a month ago. It is a cancer of a specific blood cell, lymph nodes. I took my time to come out to the public with this because I’m not used to being the center of attention or not being the person that is giving. My illness is not hard for me but the situation it has put me in is. I’m looking at this in a positive light, I hope to come out of this better than going in! I’m planning on marring the love of my life and going to school to become an esthetician. I don’t enjoy asking for help but now I really am in a time of need. Everyone who has donated so far, THANK YOU SO MUCH, you have no idea how much this has helped Clayton Sanfacon and I within these past few weeks. I love you all and I will stay strong with your love and prayers.” Hopefully you can help out financially but whether you do or not, please go online and share on your FB and Twitter accounts to help spread the word. Alternative Health Care Managing Back-To-School Anxiety with Music
T
he end of summer and the beginning of the school year can be an anxiety-inducing time for the whole family. Kids may feel anxious about going back to school, and parents may be dealing with a whole variety of worries. Music is one way that children and adults can help manage anxiety. As humans, we seem designed to respond to music from all levels of our being. Our bodies respond to music. Stored memories and feelings get tapped through music. Music stirs our souls. Below are some reasons how and why music can help you manage feelings of stress or anxiety, regardless of age. It’s my hope that these will help you see the value of music in your child’s life, as well as your own life.
Music can...
Enhance a person’s mood. If a person is feeling down, music can help them feel energized and inspired. Mindful listening to music can help reconnect a person with their body and move out of their heads and ruminating thoughts. Making music can have similar effects on enhancing mood. Develop a sense of belonging. Sometimes feelings of anxiety can come from not feeling like you belong somewhere. Making music as a group or listening to music in a group atmosphere are the most obvious ways that a person can feel
like they belong. Yet, listening to music that speaks to you, that validates your feelings, can also contribute to a sense of belonging. Foster resilience. Life isn’t always easy. When we get challenged, we need to know how to move forward in a healthy way. Music can be a metaphor for this as it takes practice to learn a song or to play an instrument. You may not sound perfect right away, but you’re motivated to improve. As you continue to practice and play, you can hear the improvement and it feels good. Boost self-esteem. A person gains a greater appreciation for who they are and what they can do when they make music. Having a stronger sense of who you are can help you to be gentle with yourself when you feel anxious, and to know that the feelings can pass. It’s important to acknowledge, though, that some people’s situations require more support. That’s where a board-certified music therapist with a background in mental health can come in handy. If this sounds like your situation, contact SoundWell Music Therapy at www. soundwellmusictherapy.com to learn more about how music therapy could help you or someone you know. Stay Hydrated & Next Healthy Weight Loss Challenge
W
ith these hot summer days upon us, it’s even more important to stay well hydrated for a healthier you. The human body is made up of 60% water with fluids that help maintain normal body temperature and deliver energy and nutrients to working muscles. An adult loses about two liters of fluid per day, and failure to replace these lost fluids raises the risk of dehydration. It’s recommended at a minimum to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. It’s essential to stay hydrated so you can perform better and push through your day. When you’re working out, here is the info broken down to make sure you’re getting the fluids that your body needs. Pre-hydration begins with three cups of fluid in the hours leading up to your workout, to assure normal levels with the goal to prevent dehydration from happening in the first place. During your workout, hydrating with cool liquids early and often helps to prevent dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and to minimize negative effects on athletic performance. Rehydration after your workout is important to enhance the recovery process. In the hours after exercise, work on rehydration. When exercising and sweating, you should drink even more fluids for every 15 minutes of exercise. If exercising exceeds 60 minutes, use a healthy sports drink with another two cups of fluid for every pound of weight lost during your workout. Looking ahead to September 2019, I will have another 10 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge that the ladies can join. The key to your fitness success will be creating a new habit of workouts and healthy eating with a plan in place. I’m telling you about this now so you’ll know the dates. This challenge makes it easier for you to commit and see results because there’s a team of women who have similar life circumstances, priorities, and goals who sign up and dedicate their time to working
out right along-side you. It’s a $15 buy-in for the 10 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge and will include a weigh-in and body composition analysis. At the end of the 10 weeks, the person with the highest % of weight loss will have earned the cash prize from everyone’s buy-in. If you want to make healthy changes in your life, then make the commitment and join the 10 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge Fall 2019. Registration and weigh-ins for the challenge will be held the week of September 9th - 13th. Specific details about registration and weighin times will be in my next article in the August paper. The end of the challenge will be the week of November 18th-22nd. SVVSD Starting Construction on New Building for Mead Elementary St. Vrain Valley School District’s original plan was to replace the aging Mead Elementary School building in pieces over time, starting by replacing a classroom addition with a wood floor in need of repair. But with other capital construction projects included the district’s $260 million bond issue package going smoothly, there was enough money available from unused contingency funds and bond sale premiums to bump up the school’s $8 million renovation budget to the $24 million needed to rebuild the entire school.

What are the “Dog Days of Summer” Anyway?
W
ikipedia says the dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. Whew! Now that’s a definition! For many of us growing up, the Dog Days of Summer seemed so very slow. The days felt long and sometimes very boring. How your perspective can change as you age! What were your summer’s like growing up? Do you have a favorite summer memory? A vacation you had with your family; an opportunity to enjoy these Rockies or perhaps a beach somewhere? How many of you longed for the summer to come to Colorado this winter and now as we head into August, it seems so fleeting! As the temperatures rise in the summer, there are some important selfcare items that older adults need to focus on. Seniors in particular may be at higher risk of heat-related illnesses as they are less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature. Additionally, as we grow older, our bodies become less efficient at regulating body temperature. Certain health conditions and medications can also make it more difficult for the body to regulate its temperature or to perspire While a simple rise in temperature may not seem like a health threat, according to the National Weather Service, heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related death in the United States, causing hundreds of fatalities each year. Fortunately, there are several things we can do to stay safe and cool, even in the midst of summer’s hottest days.
Stay hydrated Just as our sensitivity to heat dulls as we age, so does our awareness of thirst. This, along with our body’s ability to conserve water as we grow older, puts seniors at a greater risk of dehydration. Summer heat adds to the risk, because on hot days, the body loses water more quickly. Here are some tips for staying hydrated this summer. • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to take in fluids. If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. • Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can cause the body to lose even more fluid. • Drink herbal ice teas. • Summer is a great time to eat lots of fresh fruit which is a wonderful source of fluids – not everything has to be water. • Add fresh lemon or lime to your water to add a little flavor.
• Use water to dilute fruit juices, making them last longer and increasing your fluid intake. • Get creative! Make “mock-tails,” like non-alcoholic daiquiris and pina coladas. • If you are on a fluid-restricted diet, consult your physician about how to get the fluids you need during the hot summer months. • Other tips to beat the heat • Here are some other ways to beat the heat this summer: • Keep your home safe and comfortable by running the air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day and by letting in cool air in the early morning and late evening hours. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, take a break during the hottest part of the day by going to a movie, shopping at an indoor mall, visit the library or the Senior Center. • Dress in lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing, made of natural fabrics, like linen or cotton. • If you must go outside to walk, garden, or do errands, plan this for the early morning hours, when it’s coolest. • Take a cool shower or bath. • Get plenty of rest.
Enjoy your summer! With a little diligence and preparation, everyone should be able to enjoy these dog days of summer safely.

If you do experience problems … If you or a loved one experiences heavy sweating, weakness, a fast and weak pulse, nausea or fainting, this could be a sign of heat exhaustion. In this case, move to a cool location as quickly as possible. Lie down, loosen clothing and apply cool, wet cloths to as much of the body as possible. Sip some cool water. Heat stroke is a more serious situation and is characterized by a body temperature above 103 degrees, hot and red skin, a rapid and strong pulse, or unconsciousness. In this case, call 911 immediately. Before paramedics arrive, move the person to a cooler environment, apply cool cloths, but do NOT give them fluids.

CV Help Center Renovation a Community Affair
W
e live in an a m a z i n g community! The Carbon Valley Help Center (CVHC) came to be so that people in our community who are in need of short-term assistance could receive help. For more than 6 years, our clients have received food assistance, counseling, financial help to pay utility bills, rent and in some instances, mortgage and auto repairs. Recently, the CVHC was the recipient of help that turned a dream into reality. With selfless assistance from FCI Construction, Top Notch Electric, AMI Mechanical, Glacier Park Storage, Interstate Rental, the Town of Firestone and dozens of additional volunteers, the detached garage behind our main building was converted
to a storage facility for non-perishable food items that many of our clients receive monthly. The generosity & outreach of these companies & people in our community are a beautiful reminder of the saying, “It takes a village”. We are so grateful for the outpouring of support, time and resources from all involved so that our clients can be helped when the need arises. The CHVC is located at 150 Buchanan Ave in Firestone, just down the street from the USPS office, and is currently open Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9am - 3pm. Hours will be changing in August, so please visit our website, https://www. carbonvalleyhelpcenter.org/ for the most up to date information. If you or someone you know is in need of short-term food or financial assistance, please contact the CVHC at (303) 833-6626 for more information or to schedule an appointment to meet with staff who can provide resources to help meet the short-term needs. We are also seeking eager volunteers who have a passion for helping those in their community. Interested volunteers will be required to fill out an application, complete a background check and participate in a volunteer orientation. To volunteer, please go to volunteer tab on the CVHC website. The CVHC is a registered 501(c)3 and all financial donations made to the organization are tax deductible. Please send financial donations payable to CVHC and mail to PO Box 508, Firestone, CO 80520. Non-perishable food and unopened toiletry donations can be dropped off during our office hours.

Nothing About Us Without Us: Youth
I
n 2016, the Weld County Health Department was awarded a grant by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to begin a long running evidence-based community-driven system of change called Communities That Care (CTC) in Carbon Valley. CTC guides communities through a 5-phase model which is designed for sustainability and targets predictors of problems rather than waiting for problems to occur. In 2016, a coalition of community members was created, and the group began to address youth substance use prevention in Carbon Valley. The coalition began their work understanding that CTC promotes healthy youth development, improves youth outcomes, & reduces problem behaviors. In fact, a study in 24 communities across seven states found that youth in CTC communities were: 32 percent less likely to begin using alcohol and 33 percent less likely begin using cigarettes youth in other communities. Studies have also shown that for every dollar spent on CTC in a community, $5.30 is returned to the community in the form of lower criminal justice system, crime victim, and health care costs; as well as an increase in earnings and tax revenues! As part of the coalition’s ongoing work, the Carbon Valley CTC Coalition held two youth events at the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District’s training facility
on June 14th and June 21st. The events focused on providing a safe gathering place for youth to have fun, learn about CTC, and make friends. The events were free to attend, and had dinner donated by a community favorite, Georgia Boys BBQ in Frederick. Young people who attended the events were able to play life sized board games, listen to an educational speaker, use a photo booth, and win prizes. In addition to providing two nights of fun, the coalition intended the event to encourage youth to join the coalition’s Youth Advisory Board. The Carbon Valley coalition are firm believers in James Charlton’s saying, “Nothing about us without us”; which means that the coalition cannot make positive changes within Carbon Valley without consistent youth participation and the voices of Carbon Valley youth! Many young people who came to the two events stated they would like to join the Youth Advisory Board; as a result, a Carbon Valley CTC Youth Advisory Board Kickoff Meeting was held on July 30th at the Carbon Valley Library. The CTC Youth Advisory Board will continue to meet on a regular basis, with meetings set according to the Youth Advisory Board’s availability; we invite any Carbon Valley or Mead youth to join us! Be on the look out for details about our next meeting or contact the CTC facilitator, Casey Peirce, at cpeirce@weldgov.com.

Home Upgrade Project for WWII Purple Heart Veteran
Q
ualified Listeners, a Veteran & Family Resource Hub based in northern Colorado, organized efforts to upgrade the home of a Sterling, CO World War II Purple Heart Veteran. Baxter Arnold served in the U.S. Army 102 Infantry Division for three years fighting in combat in northwestern Germany and was awarded two Purple Hearts. When his home needed modifications due to health and mobility issues, Qualified Listeners was contacted for assistance. Through a grant from the Home Depot Foundation to cover materials and supplies, Qualified Listeners partnered with Sterling Home Depot to execute the project. The project included replacing a bathtub with a walk-in shower and grab bars, as well as new toilets
that are higher and more water efficient for both bathrooms in the house. Porch guard rails were replaced and a fresh coat of paint was added to the guard rails and around the porch. Gutters were cleaned and repaired, internal and external handrails were installed, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were replaced, and flower beds were weeded. In addition, Qualified Listeners coordinated volunteers from the Sterling community to donate their time in completing the project, including a donated lunch for the volunteers from a local restaurant. “We’re very, very grateful and just overwhelmed by what these people have done, just because they want to do it,” commented Carol Arnold, wife of the Veteran. “We would encourage any Veterans that have questions or concerns on anything for Veterans to contact Qualified Listeners.” “The more we get into this and the more we help veterans, the more we see the need and it’s not just simply home improvement. It doesn’t matter what you need, call us”, adds Greg Goettsch, Founder and Executive Director of Qualified Listeners. To learn more about Qualified Listeners, call 720-600-0860 or, visit www. irror Image Brewing (formerly Echo Brewing) is a small family run business tucked away in an industrial section just north of downtown Frederick. In February, 2019, Dennis and Daniel Richards joined forces with Theresa and Steve Schirner. Together the four partners decided that a new image was needed to mirror the direction of the company. As some might know, Daniel and Dennis are identical twins, hence the creation of Echo Brewing as they echoed each other all their lives. Steve is also an identical twin so the idea of Mirror image keeps the name familial and true to its Echo roots.
While t h e y c o nt i nu e to brew their award-winning beers such as Balefire Irish Red, Kirby Kölsch and Tri-Town Brown, they look forward to creating fun new beers. They will continue making artisanal pizzas, especially their signature Detroit-style dough. Try the Road 13 with its cheesy fluffy crust loaded with pepperoni and sausage and dolloped with homemade marinara and ricotta cheese. Go check out some changes in the taproom, new apparel and a rebranding party on August 30th. You can follow Mirror Image Brewing on Facebook, Instagram or check out their website at www. m i r r o r i m a g e b r e w c o. com. Echo Erie will remain your Echo headquarters serving awesome beer and great pizza as always.

Targeting Your Ideal Customer Sam Walton, found of Walmart, said, “Exceed your customer’s expectations. If you do, they’ll come back over and over. Give them what they want - and a little more.” When I meet with a business owner, I often ask them who their ideal client is. Are they male or female? Over 21? Where do they live? Is your product or service a necessity, or does your ideal customer need to have expendable income to afford it? Is there any commonality you’ve found in your customer base? If you’re shooting an arrow at a bale of hay, it sure helps to have a target to center on. It’s the same with marketing. And Facebook is a huge help to the business owner. How? Let’s say you have a brewery and you want to attract men between the age of 21 (duh) and 70 who live within a vicinity of five miles. It’s a sports bar. We would create an ad to bring new people to your page and we would put in these specific demographics. I’m looking for males over 21 but under 70 within five

miles of my bar who like the Broncos, Rockies, and Avalanche. You tell Facebook that you’re willing to spend $10 a day for five days. With a budget of $50, you’re likely to attract more than 50 new Likes for your page! Let’s use another example. You have a food truck. Your ideal customer is male or female (over 16 so they can drive) who loves outdoor concerts and activities. Proximity doesn’t matter as much because your food truck is going to be coming to them. But if you have three top locations you go to, plug in those cities. Tell Facebook you’re willing to spend $5 a day for ten days. That $50 will bring you at least 50 new Likes. he Colorado Dahlia Society will be presenting two shows for the upcoming season. The first one will be August 24-25 at Echter’s Nursery and Garden Center at 52nd and Garrison in Arvada. The Loveland Public Library, 300 North Adams Ave., Loveland, will be the second show’s location on September 7-8. Both shows are open to the public free of charge on Saturday after judging is completed about 12 o’clock. Each show closes Sunday afternoon at 3:30. There is an AMATEUR CLASS and an OPEN CLASS. You do not need to be a member to enter dahlia blooms. Each stem just needs to have two leaves to qualify; vases are available if needed. Members will be available to help finalize any entries – from 7:00 – 10:00 AM each Saturday. Our theme is IT’S A PICNIC! So our arrangement entries and our photography contest (only at the Arvada show) will center on that theme. More show details – as well as a Photo Gallery - are available on our website – coloradodahlias.net - or by calling a member listed below. Come enjoy some beautiful blooms, take pictures, and learn from our education display. Members love to visit about their favorite flower! Call Janet at 303-502-4295 or John/Donna at 940-590-2005 for more information.

his morning, the Weld County attorney received a letter from the State Attorney General’s Office regarding Senate Bill 19-181 and local government 1041 regulations. When the state legislature passed SB 19-181, the state gave local governments expanded local-government authority with regard to land use. It was very clear that the state cannot preempt local land use authority or interfere with the siting of oil and gas locations and facilities. The letter the county received today at 8:02 a.m. (in the form of a news release sent to the media) contradicts SB 19-181 and, as we read it, attempts to take the “local” out of “local control”. Local governments have defined authorities over land use within their jurisdictions – authorities that were further enhanced by SB 19-181. For the COGCC, through the State Attorney’s Office, to now not only attempt to assume local control from local governments but also require a duplicative process for the oil and gas industry is both disappointing and irresponsible. Weld County will exercise the authority the state has granted us to develop and implement our regulations as they work best for our county with regard to protecting public health, safety, welfare and the environment.

Long Awaited Retail Coming to Mead
S
ugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot will open Fall 2019 in Mead, Colorado bringing a much needed retail venue to the small town. Sugar Mill will quickly become northern Colorado’s premier retail venue specializing in antiques, vintage, home décor, farmhouse, shabby chic, unique gift items, items made in Colorado, works by local artists and much more! Sugar Mill features a carefully curated collective of over 50 wonderful shops supporting local artisans in one convenient venue. Sugar Mill will provide small business owners and local artisans the opportunity to have a “brick and mortar” location to display and sell their goods. This affords Sugar Mill vendors a unique opportunity where they otherwise might not be able to afford due to the high costs of leasing retail space in Colorado. Sugar Mill is a locally owned and operated family business. The owners live in Mead and Frederick and have a heart for the local community. The Sugar Mill facility was designed with the community in mind. Offering a community meeting room/ workshop where local organizations in need a place to meet from time to time will be able to do so. Additionally, Sugar Mill has a community giving program that will partner
with a different local charity or organization every month to give back to their community! The name Sugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot was arrived at after careful consideration. The owners felt it imperative to pay tribute to the rich history of the Town of Mead. In 1905 the Great Western Sugar Company was building a railroad to transport sugar beets farmed in Mead to the nearby sugar mill in Longmont for processing. Sugar beets and the railroad played an important role in the development of the town of Mead. Hence the name Sugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot was created! Sugar Mill is currently accepting vendor applications. If interested, complete the vendor contact form found on their website at www.SugarMillMead.com. For more information and updates on this exciting project, like and follow them on Facebook @ Sugarmillmead Sugar Mill Antiques and Vintage Depot will be conveniently located off I-25 & Hwy 66 near Tractor Supply and Mead Veterinary Clinic. The Town of Mead has some of the lowest sales tax in Colorado at only 4.9%, so customers shopping dollars will go further at Sugar Mill and support the local community!

How to Determine How Much House You Can Afford
I
t can be exciting to think about buying a new home. You dream of where you want to live and the features you want in your house. However, the biggest discussion you need to have is, “How much house can I afford?” You need to be sure you can make the monthly payments and that your income and lifestyle are attractive to a lender. In addition, you must be able to budget for maintenance of the home, insurance, and emergency repairs. Let’s take a look at ways to calculate how much house you can actually afford. • Multiply your annual income by three. This is a basic rule of thumb to help calculate the total overall amount of house you can afford. If you make $200,000 annually and multiply that by three, you can afford a home that is approximately $600,000. • Know your credit score. The higher your credit score, the lower your interest rate will be, which can give you a higher home value. • Understand the 28% Ratio. This is the housing expense-to-income ratio. Take your projected housing expenses and divide by your monthly income. Mortgage
companies like to see a ratio of 28% or less. • Know the 36% Rule. This is the debt-to-income ratio. Now lenders will look at your student loans, car payments, credit cards, and other debt and divide that by your monthly income. If that ratio is over 36%, lenders are less likely to give you a loan. These are basic calculations you can do yourself just so you can know the approximate amount you can afford. With interest rates still near historic lows you may never have more buying power and there are many down payment assistance programs available where you can get into a house for as little as $1,000 down. If you have any real estate related questions or if you would like a free market analyses on your current home please contact me.
