Bus Trip to the Wild Animal Sanctuary

Submitted by Linda Allour Lions, tigers and Bears OH MY…& lepards, lynx, wolves, camels, and llamas! The Wild Animal Sanctuary is the oldest and largest nonprofit Sanctuary in the US dedicated exclusively to rescuing captive exotic and endangered large carnivores, providing them with a wonderful life for as long as they live, and educating about the tragic plight faced by an estimated 30,000 such animals in America Today. It was in 1980 by Pat Craig using strictly donated funds. The government provides no assistance. It’s not like a zoo environment. After decades of working with large carnivores, the Sanctuary’s Founder and Director, Pat Craig, knew that large carnivores did not consider air or the sky to be territory. This meant the invasive pressure from humans could be alleviated as long as visitors were relegated to elevated walkways and decks. In addition, giving the animals the option to move away from people if they wanted to – by never restricting their movement - would also help alleviate pressure. And finally, giving the animals’ large acreage habitats with natural vegetation and other amenities would also be an important part of

the equation. Daylight Donuts of Dacono hosted a charted bus in 2008 for the public to visit this wonderful place. Since then, many changes have been made. The Sanctuary now has an elevated walk way a mile long. They call it a Mile into the Wild. From this walkway, you can see the lions, tigers, bears, and wolves roaming free in their open acreage area. The Sanctuary is 720 acres big! Come visit this unique animal rescue on August 23, 2014. A charted bus will arrive in the parking lot of Daylight Donuts at 3:30pm and leave at 4pm. Once you arrive, an assigned Sanctuary employee will provide a brief “speech” and hand out a tour guide book. You will have about 3 hours to wander, relax, and take pictures before boarding the bus at 7:30pm for departure at 7:45pm. You will arrive back in Dacono approximately 8:15pm. Each passenger will be offered a small ice cream cone compliments of Daylight Donuts. Tickets are $10 for the Bus, then $15 entry fee for Adults and children 13yr and older; $7.50 for age 3yr to 12yr; free for under 3 yr. Please call 303-833-2009 for info and to make your reservation. You can also see this information on the Daylight Donuts of Dacono Facebook page. The Wild Animal Sanctuary is located at 1946 County Road 53 in Keenesburg, CO 80643. That is straight east on Hwy 52 to CR 53 then south. www.wildlifesanctury.org.

Furniture Row: A Good Neighbor

by Jan Sciacca Although I’m “dating” myself when I admit that I remember these household names – Pillow Kingdom and Big Sur Waterbed - names from the 70s and 80s, I’m also giving you a glimpse of a bit of history of what has transformed into what is today’s Furniture Row. Although The Furniture Row Center in Dacono celebrated its 8th anniversary last month, Furniture Row began in 1974. Furniture Row’s official name is Furniture Row Companies, LLC and is owned by Barney Visser, a man who calls Colorado home. Denver-based Furniture Row is comprised of four specialty stores—Sofa Mart, Oak Express, Bedroom Expressions, and Denver Mattress. Here you’ll find quality furniture designs at truly surprising values. You’ll find everything you need to furnish a single room or an entire home. Multiple storefronts make your shopping experience one where you can just stop in and shop a single department or use their “power aisle,” which connects all four specialty stores, making shopping the entire center a breeze. But there is so much more to Furniture Row than furniture and furnishings! They’re truly a good neighbor, starting with its local staff, Stephanie Hudson-Sofa Mart, Robert Ortiz-Denver Mattress Company and Toby Tinsley-Oak Express. Firestone Ranked #2 for Safest Communities in Colorado

There are many reasons people call Firestone home, one of which is the recent ranking as the second safest place in Colorado according to real estate company Movoto’s Top 10 Safest Places in Colorado. This comes on the heels of the Firestone community being ranked no. 1 in Colorado for homeownership earlier this year, and being named one of the best small towns in the United States in 2013 by Money magazine. Safety has always been an important factor to Firestone residents, which has been evident in numerous community outreach efforts. In the 2014 Firestone Community Survey completed earlier this year, the majority of Firestone residents ranked their quality of life and sense of personal safety very high, making the community a desired place to live. In fact, 94 percent rank their personal sense of community as “somewhat” to “very” safe. “We are honored to achieve such a

Vol. 15, Issue 8

distinction as we continually provide a safe community for our citizens,” said Police Chief David Montgomery. Rankings for the Movoto study were based on communities with 10,000 residents or more and based on crime data from the FBI’s 2012 Uniform Crime Report. The study divided community crimes into four categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes, giving a greater weight to violent crimes and murder. According to the report, “… Firestone residents can feel pretty confident that they won’t be facing any difficulties with crime in the near future, since the likelihood is just 1 in 104. That’s because in 2012, Firestone had just 958 crimes per 100,000 people.” Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen added, “The Firestone Police Department has a great dedication and professionalism to keeping our community safe. A special thank you to Police Chief David Montgomery for his leadership and high standards he has installed in our officers.” Check out the full report and safest places throughout the state on Movoto’s website at http://www.movoto.com/co/safest-places-incolorado/.

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

z An incredible celebration and tribute took place in Firestone in July that I am sure most of you were a part of. Not only was the 12th Annual 4th at Firestone Celebration well received, but I Paul Sorensen must say that I love a great parade, and this year’s parade was one to remember. Thank you to all of

FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY

z As students are savoring their last few weeks of Tony Carey summer and looking toward the new school year, I want to take a minute to reflect on how fortunate we are in the Carbon Valley area to have such a great school system. The St. Vrain Valley School District

the participants who created incredible floats, performed for the thousands of people who lined the route and supplied a good healthy helping of good ole red, white and blue patriotic pride. I would like to give a special thank you to all our veterans who are responsible for our ability to ring the liberty bell each and every day. z The following weekend after the 4th of July, many dedicated Carbon Valley individuals gathered at Hart Park to raise awareness and fundraise for the 10th annual Relay for Life event. While the event began with storm clouds and rain, a little rain isn’t anything compared to the forecast and storms our community members must endure after being diagnosed with cancer. The overnight walking marathon was filled with laughter, music and good conversations. By the next morning, diehard participants were amazed to hear that more than $100,000 was raised from the Carbon Valley event for the American Cancer Society.

z To top off, patriotic pride was in full force at both the 4th at Firestone and Relay for Life with a grand display of 100 United States flags displayed by our own Carbon Valley Rotary club. Thank you for the gift of demonstrating your love of country that so many enjoy. z Throughout the years Firestone has been recognized for the great community we call home. It all began with the 2010 census when Firestone earned the honor of being the fastest growing community in Colorado. In 2013, Money Magazine ranked Firestone as the 24th “Best Place to Live” in the United States, and just last year our community was ranked number one in homeownership in the state of Colorado. We also just received word that Movoto, the real estate research blog, has ranked Firestone in the top 10 of the safest places in Colorado. Many of these accolades would not have been achieved without the hard work of all the employees, staff and elected officials that serve our Firestone community. Thank you all.

works tirelessly to provide our children with an education full of diverse opportunity while staying on the cutting edge of technology and educational trends. And now they are reaching out to our community to help support students in need by donating to Crayons to Calculators. Consider donating school supplies for all grade levels at a drop box at Town Hall (401 Locust St.). There is a list of needed supplies at www. crayonstocalculators.org z If you or your student are looking for a job to finish out the summer or even keep during the school year, we have many local organizations looking to hire including the Carbon Valley Rec Center, Carbon Valley Academy and the McDonald’s in Frederick located at Highway 52 and I-25. z We also have some end of summer events for you to enjoy as a family including the Back2School Frederick Market on August 7th where you can chat with the schools, get lunch packing tips and expend that last bit of summer energy with Carbon Valley

Rec District’s fun and games. Another great special event will be the first ever Fiesta Day at the market that will be complete with special vendors and music from Mariachi Vasquez and local favorites, The Martinez Brothers. The Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce will also be hosting a new event in Downtown Frederick on Saturday August 16th called the Colorado Craft Beer Roundup. I hope you will all join me in supporting the Chamber in this new fundraising endeavor that also doubles as another opportunity for our community to get together. Downtown Frederick will play host to another new event this August as Georgia Boys BBQ brings Blues, Brews and BBQ to Crist Park on August 23rd. And who can forget Miners Day is coming up as well, mark your calendars for Saturday September 20th! z With so many exciting things happening in our community, I feel confident in saying the 2014-2015 school year will be a successful one and I hope you’ll come out and be a part of your community in whatever way you most enjoy.

Thousands Celebrate 12th Annual 4th at Firestone

Thousands of people helped Firestone celebrate the 12th Annual 4th at Firestone event on July 4, 2014, in historic Firestone. The day started with the American Legion Auxiliary’s traditional pancake breakfast and the Firecracker 5k presented by the Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District. More than 160 runners and walkers took part in the race. The highly anticipated parade wove its way through historic Firestone to Miners Park for the celebration. More than 70 participants entered the parade for a great mix of floats, vehicles, music, dance numbers, classic cars, horses and more. The main event included a showcase of business, children, nonprofit, art and food vendors. Children scoured the climbing wall throughout the day, showing their skills in the air. Additional activities included inflatables, mini golf, games, a bungee trampoline, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, caricature artist, balloon twisting, laser tag and more. Even a stilt walker made his way through the crowd showing off his patriotic attire. In addition, Anadarko Petroleum Corp., the official fireworks sponsor, provided free wagon rides for attendees. The classic car show grew in size and included 40 classic cars and trucks for people to view in detail along the Firestone Trail. The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District Color Guard led the presentation of colors followed by a veteran’s recognition. Outstanding live entertainment throughout the day included a fresh twist on bluegrass by Party of Peasants, the Celtic Irish sounds from The Indulgers and highenergy country music by the Triple Nickel Band. Festival attendees came back out to the park in the evening for a headlining concert in the park with Santana tribute band Soul Sacrifice before the night sky was lit with a spectacular fireworks display over Saddleback Golf Club. The 4th at Firestone has become not only Firestone’s premier annual community event, but also a regional attraction to celebrate America’s birthday. The event has continued to increase in participation, drawing thousands of people to Firestone for family-oriented fun and entertainment throughout the day. Photos Courtesy of Firestone

Michelle Stoops and Tricia Otey, the new owners of Apricot Lane Longmont, are longtime friends, co-workers and mothers of best friends, as well as residents of the area (Longmont and Frederick) and are excited to become business owners together! The two moms worked together in the front office of a local school and wanted to take their personal skills and do something new with them. They felt it was a perfect time to combine their desire to help women, while bringing high fashion at affordable prices, to area women. Apricot Lane’s convenient location, which opened in late June, is on Ken Pratt Boulevard in Longmont, just minutes away from Frederick, Firestone, Dacono, Mead and Erie and is convenient for commuters. “Apricot Lane is the perfect fit for us because of its flexible franchise system and support of family-owned businesses. Their philanthropic mission aligned with our desire to grow a local business, along with identifying opportunities to give back as well,” explained Stoops. Apricot Lane prides itself on featuring a limited number of each item in stock. “This allows our guests to create a look that is unique to them, not something they will see on lots of other women! We look forward to reacting instantly to the emerging trends we see and the requests we receive from customers. That’s what the boutique experience is all about. That and the highest level of customer service,” commented Otey. Apricot Lane features celebrity-inspired fashion apparel, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and accessories to create the hottest looks - for an affordable price! With trend-setting styles seen on the pages of national magazines and on dozens of celebrities, the boutique strives to be a destination spot for both mothers and daughters, teens through 50’s looking for fashion-forward designs. In addition to offering stylish trends, the boutique offers one of the newest crazes to hit the fashion scene . . .fashion parties. Apricot Lane Boutique offers clients a chance to have their own “Girls Night Out!” at the boutique with the store handling the details from coordinating the invitations to the planning of refreshments and snacks. Apricot Lane encourages hosts to bring ten to fifteen guests to the fashion parties. Guests can consist of co-workers, mothers and daughters, young mothers looking to escape from the kids for a few hours, charity groups, schools or sports teams. Apricot Lane offers the hostess 50% off any one item in the boutique, 20% off all remaining items, and gift card incentives for bringing a certain number of guests. All attendees receive 20% off the store during the party. These are great events for non-profit organizations and charities because the store will donate a portion of party sales back to the organization. I have been curious about the origin of the company’s name since I first heard that the boutique had opened and heard that there were other Apricot Lane Boutiques in the country. Founder and CEO of Apple Lane franchises, Ken Petersen, told me the name came from criteria he had given his staff. He wanted an upscale feeling but one that wasn’t really contemporary. He also wanted a name that started with an “A” so it would be at the top of directories under “Women’s Fashion.” He wanted a name that invokes curiosity when one sees it from across a parking lot. “Boutique” was added to be more descriptive. Apricot Lane Boutique Longmont is making quite a name for itself. Last month they were featured on Colorado’s Best on Channel 2, with our own area attorney, Ellen Ross, and her daughter modeling the store’s fashions. When asking Ellen more about how she knew the business, she remarked that the owners were friends that she had met at her daughter’s school. She then shared that she thought the boutique was special because by receiving new limited shipments daily, merchandise is unique. This month launches a “Back to School” sale, which starts August 8 and ends August 11, offering a tiered sale which means the more one spends, the more savings one receives. Apricot Lane Boutique Longmont is located at 180 Ken Pratt Blvd, #225, Longmont (Northwest of Carl Jr’s.) Longmont and is open Mon-Fri, 10-7, Sat., 10-6, and Sundays 11-5. They can also be reached by phone at 303-651-7700 and on FaceBook.

Select the Right White

‘I want to paint it white.’ White is a clean and adaptable color and we often hear this request. Upon asking our clients to select that white they are actually inundated with hundreds from which to choose. One would believe it would be the simplest decision, and it can be. Most of the top paint brands offer a brochure highlighting their whites exclusively and upon first glance you may think only a few appear white, while the other whites look as they vary in pale shades from gray to green to beige, yellow or cream. Whites fit in three categories: warm whites, cool whites and true whites. Cool whites have blue tones and work best in a crisp, modern setting. Warm whites, with red and yellow tones result in a creamier white and work best in a traditional or eclectic styled room. Of course you must consider what else is in your room. Is there a lot of natural wood? Is lighting limited? Warm whites with red and creamy tints will work best. Modern rooms or rooms saturated with light can withstand the brighter, truer whites. Darker colors in your room? Those whites that don’t look so white on the color decks will appear white next to your deeper hues. Most important, try the whites out in your home in the room to be painted. Ask your paint store for samples to paint on each wall in your room so that you can view it as the lighting changes during different times of the day. Here are some whites that are often requested by clients and often recommended by us because they are versatile and can usually be used in any setting: Sherwin Williams: Dover White, Pure White Benjamin Moore: China White, Paper White, Decorator’s White, White Dove Behr: Swiss Coffee For more information on your painting project, call Tim at Blue Parrot Painting at 303.678.8442 or visit www.blueparrotpainting.com.

personally with Sofa Mart manager and local resident Stephanie Hudson, who has worked for Furniture for 11 years, including the 8 that the Dacono location has been open. Many times when a staff opening occurred, she would put out community “feelers,” letting those who might know someone qualified and desperately in need of work that she needed people. It was a personal connection that I found to be a rare and refreshing gesture. Furniture Row supports local communities by helping those whose efforts make a difference in people’s lives. This means providing assistance as neighborhoods rebuild following disasters such as floods, fires, storms, etc. The company also supports important efforts of nonprofit organizations such as Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, St. Jude Dream Home, Salvation Army, Arbor Day Foundation, the Tim Tebow Foundation, and World Vision. Furniture Row is also the owner and exclusive sponsor of Furniture Row Racing. Some might be surprised to hear that owner Barney Visser raced at the Colorado National Speedway. Along with Jerry Robertson, they formed the NASCAR Busch Series team which is now known as the Nationwide Series. In 2005, he began his NASCAR team. Martin Truex Jr. drives Furniture Row’s No. 78 Chevrolet Impala. Surround Yourself With Supportive People

Does it ever feel like you gain momentum and start to make improvement in your fitness and nutrition program, then some of your family and friends start to harm your efforts? You are not alone and this is one of the main reasons why it can be difficult to stick with a program. This may sound familiar. You're doing great and are on track with your goals. You understand your "why" and use it to keep you motivated every day as you work hard. You've been eating healthy and exercising on a consistent basis. You're stronger, have more energy, and you feel better. Inches are dropping and your clothes fit better. So naturally, you're excited and want to share your success with others. Some of your loved ones who were once excited for you may start to pull back. They may say: You look too skinny, you're not fun to hang out with anymore, or give you a hard time if you want to drink water instead of sweet drinks or alcohol. I want to encourage you to surround yourself with supportive family and friends as you work on creating a healthier you. Take the time to share your goals with them, as well as details about how you're going to lose weight, exercise, and improve your overall health. Give them the basics on the types of foods you're eating and your workout schedule. Tell them how important it is to you, how you feel about your efforts, and how they can continue to support you in this new lifestyle. Tell your family and friends on social media, they can help keep you accountable too. Consistently and patiently communicate to others what they can do to support you, and you'll build a network of strength that you can lean on when you feel down and are in need of encouragement. If you need help getting started on a fitness and nutrition program, or need someone to hold you accountable to your goals, then contact Tracy Rewerts, I'm here to help. I'm a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist and Women's Fitness Specialist at www. TimeForChangePersonalTraining.com or call 303-828-2856.

Historic Firestone Spirit

By Betty Heath Have you noticed the commercials promoting Colorado made products by calling them “Colorado Proud?” The folks who live in Historic Firestone are just as proud of their roots as are the merchants who sell Colorado made products. Although Firestone doesn’t have a ‘downtown’ to speak of, the residents are hoping something can be done to rejuvenate their part of Firestone. Several interested citizens have formed a group called, “Historic Firestone Coalition.” The mission is to rekindle the “Old Town Spirit” in the historic part of Firestone. Interested folk who live anywhere in Firestone are encouraged to join and be a part of this coalition. All residents need to be mindful of Firestone’s past as well as its present. At least three instances have occurred where someone who lives north of Historic Firestone has stated they didn’t even know there is an “Old Town Firestone.” One of the first things they hope to accomplish is the renaming of First Street to Main Street. This would open the door to developing an art district or something similar that would encourage people to visit Historic Firestone and learn about our history. Additionally it would give the town a starting point to tie the community together. Replacing and upgrading old broken, narrow sidewalks throughout the area with new wider ones along with replacing broken, outdated street lights would allow pedestrians and bicycles to navigate the shopping areas without the danger of being struck by a vehicle or accidentally bumping into one another and/or having a debilitating fall. If pedestrians have safer access to the shopping areas, the shop owners would see an increase in business. Shop owners are willing to replace front space parking with tables, lights and flowers to create a shopper friendly atmosphere. Not only would it be more convenient for shoppers it would encourage them to linger awhile and enjoy the ambiance. The Coalition is also initiating a “Beautiful Yard Award” for Historic Firestone residents who show their ‘Old Town Spirit’ by having beautiful, well groomed yards. Look for the award yard signs to show up in your neighborhood. The ultimate goal of the Historic Firestone Coalition is bring the community of Historic Firestone together. If you are interested in being a part of the Historic Firestone Coalition please contact Leo Martinez on his cell phone: 303-210-9912 or email: JLMshippers@aol.com.

JacLyn has been a resident of Firestone for the past 30 years. However, she and her mother, Jackie bought their current residence at 120 Buchanan about 5 years ago. They are both conservationists and have chosen xeriscaping as a way to conserve water usage. Additionally, their yard has been designated as a wild life conservation location. The plants they have chosen to grow among the rocks are vital for migratory birds for food and shelter.

Beautiful Yard Award

We will have three yards per week from now through September... The Historical Firestone Coalition announces the "Beautiful Yard Award" for the week of July 21-26 to three long time residents: Joe and Agnes Martinez, 120 Buchanan Ave; JacLynn Vealey and her mother, Jackie, 120 Buchanan; and Lillian Melick, 228 2nd Street.

Joe and Agnes Martinez have lived in their house at 270 Buchanan for 58 years. Joe said it was not much larger than a 'chicken coop' when they bought it, but adding rooms throughout the years has allowed them to raise their five children. Joe is a retired butcher who found employment in the maintenance department at Saint Vrain Valley School District after retirement. Anytime you drive by you will probably see Joe in his yard working with his many flowers including the Dahlias along the fence as well as pulling the weeds in his large vegetable garden in the back.

Lillian's beautiful yard has been a work in progress for the past 30 plus years. Being a gifted artist has proven beneficial as she has beautifully painted her garage door as well as designed her lush yard and added many eye catching features. Congratulations to our first three resident families and their yards for being chosen as representatives of the true "Old Town Spirit."

Grand Opening at Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse

Thank you Frederick for welcoming us into your community, your downtown and onto your lunch and dinner plates! Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse would like to thank the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce (CVCC) for welcoming us into the community! The Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce provided a wonderful ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 17 at 3:30pm just before the Town of Frederick’s Farmers Market. Bill Meier, President of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce, presented the owners Nick Reckinger and Matt Alexander with a Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce Certificate of Membership plaque prior to the ribbon cutting. With great weather, and a turnout of over 100 people, Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse celebrated the ribbon cutting with their townspeople, friends & staff, followed by a reception on their shaded, dining patio. The event kicked off a full weekend celebration of live music with Flynn & Co., door prizes, a silent auction with donated items from several local businesses, drink specials and an all you can eat buffet.

Several exciting announcements were made during the reception by the owners. Nick and Matt announced their first “Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival” on Saturday, August 23, from 2:00-10:00pm. This new annual event will include many fun activities including these below; ● 2:00 Open ● 3:00 Watermelon eating contest for all ages ● 4:30-6:30 Bonnie & The Clydes Country Band ● 5:00 Barnyard Eating Challenge (first 10 people pre-registered at Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse) ● 6:30-7:30 Frederick High School Music Department Performs ● 7:30-9:30 The One & Only-Best of Colorado-- “Hazel Miller Band” ● $5 Admission for 13 years & above, 12 & under free. ● Family entertainment and fun for all ages ● Left Hand Brewing, Oskar Blues & Echo Brewery beer available ● Food trucks ● Splash pad & playground included in the festival ● Face painting & other family friendly booths ● Fire department truck for kids and family from 3:00-5:00 ● Bike valet by Frederick High School-donations accepted A second big announcement was made as well! The new back patio expansion project was announced followed by a tour from the park to view the expansion project. They have had several requests from customers to take the back wall of the restaurant down and provide an outdoor patio looking onto the park. SO! With the demand from their customers and the desire to create a unique, relaxing, outdoor, family environment, the patio fund raising project was born. Based on your various donated amounts for the project from $10-$1,000, each person donating could receive sauce, certificates, beer club memberships, your name placed into the patio permanently, and catering for 50 people! All as a thank you for donating funds to this exciting project. Thank you again Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce for welcoming Georgia Boys BBQ Smokehouse into the community. We look forward to serving each and every person in the Tri-Town area our mouth-watering smoked BBQ, locally crafted Colorado brews, homemade food, and being fully engaged in this great TriTown community.

fixtures to hang your plates and wine glasses from the ceilings or walls, which will free up cabinet space. Build up. Need more cabinet space? Look up! If your existing cabinets don't extend to the ceiling, you're wasting precious footage. Consider having additional cabinets built where you can store things you rarely use, like that crock pot that comes out once a year, or your holiday china. Abolish clutter. Nothing cramps an already small space more than clutter, and a clean countertop can do wonders for a small space. It is $7.00 for all you can eat and consists of eggs, bacon, ham, steak, hash browns, green chili, pancakes, waffles, coffee and juice. Even if you don’t eat, come on out and meet other Veterans, we are a fun bunch. VFW regular meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at our VFW Post. Please let me know if you would like to attend one as my guest. Each Friday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 AM there is a GI Coffee hosted by the Carbon Valley Senior Center right across the street to the south of the Rec Center. Free coffee and doughnuts and great conversation with other Veterans. Come out and get acquainted, no pressure and no cost. American Legion Auxiliary #1985

The Auxiliary of American Legion #1985 would like to thank all that attended our annual July 4th breakfast. It is with the support of our members and communities that we are able to continue this tradition . Over 250 people were served from 7 - 10 AM and although we ran out of food, we are hoping to return next year. We had a larger turnout this year, far more than expected. Everyone was very understanding of our situation and we thank you. On July 12th, the Auxiliary was breakfast host to the J. T. Memorial Run which is an annual poker run done in memory of Jeremy Tenoria who was killed in a motor cycle/auto accident just out of Fort Lupton 4 years ago. Most were Legion Riders and this was an awesome sight to see such a turnout of compassion. We had cycles, cars, and trucks along for this great event. What a great way to start a Saturday morning! Coming up on August 23, 2014 is our annual car show, live auction, and oldies dance which is our major scholarship fund raiser. The car show begins at 1 PM with DJ Mark Pearson's sounds of the 50's and 60's. Trophies will be awarded at 3:30. There is a $5 entry fee and a food item to be donated to our local food banks. A live auction will follow at 4 to 6 PM with donated items of choice. We are looking for antiquities, memoriabelia, collectables, new items, cash and or gift certificates for this auction. If you can help us, please contact Donna Lane. There will be a beer garden and food available throughout the day. The evening will feature 50's and 60's music by Martinez and Company with a $5 donation at the door and a food item. The event is open to the public and proceeds go to our scholarship fund which provides scholarship funds in the amount of $500 to local graduating seniors. This is always a fun event and one that our communities can enjoy and know that they are helping our young folks realize their dreams to further their education. (Please see the flyer in this publication) Our summer is full of exciting events and if anyone is in need of information about joining our great organization, please call Donna Lane @ 303-833-4172 or e-mail me @ dlaney2342@msn.com. We have applications on site at the American Legion #1985 in Firestone and welcome you to stop by anytime. We are open from noon until ? 7 days a week. Visit with members and our friendly staff and see why this should be your Legion home.

My boyfriend got the Jolie Folle Rose to drink, which paired Jill and Paul Hueser of Firestone welcomed really well with the appetizers. I got the Kono, a Sauvignon Blanc. Again, this wine was absolutely delicious with everything we had…Impeccable service, amazing food and drink, and awesome environment.” Kaiden Welling Hueser on May 19, 2014 at 2:56 p.m. 2020 FOOD + WINE BAR reflects Matthew Koury’s many years of experience as Executive Chef at a number Kaiden was 8 lb 12 oz & 20 1/2 inches long at birth. of prominent Chicago restaurants. Consumer Shout Out of Appreciation

I wanted to extend a "healthy" thank you to our new emergent care team, [First Choice Emergency Room] located on Colorado Blvd and HWY 119 in Firestone. Yesterday I had a medical need and stopped in. The team there were fantastic! I was seen so quickly, that there wasn't time to complete the normal paperwork until after the doctor had his first consult with me. All in all, I think I was there about 45 minutes. If I would have went to a hospital ER, it would have been a 2-4 hour journey. I'm not knocking our area hospital Emergency rooms at all, they're big places with many patients. The building is new and shines like a diamond. They seemed to have all the equipment to perform a good triage. I recommend that if anyone needs medical care, try the new medical place in Firestone. Again thanks for the great service, Rick B., Frederick First Choice Emergency Room is located at 5965 Firestone Blvd. in Firestone. Their phone number is 303.678.4340 or check them out at www.fcer.com.

Food for the Soul

Who Wants To Be A Worship Warrior?

By Jim Coleman Not everyone likes the idea of being a warrior. Some think we should just think peaceful happy thoughts and love our enemies and all will be well. But as world history has shown repeatedly, there are some types who only understand strength and will not yield to reasoning alone. Apart from the obvious need to have law officers and soldiers to “keep the peace”, let’s consider the desirability of each of us developing some positive warrior characteristics in order to be found more pleasing to God and more beneficial to our fellow man. In Ephesians 6:12 we read: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The Bible lets us know there are more than just angels in the heavenly realm; there are some bad guys out there as well, and we’d better be aware of how to deal with them in this life. That is precisely why we need to have our warrior skills developed and keep ourselves ready for battle when it comes. The passage goes on to describe the spiritual armor every Christian should be wearing daily, but today let’s grapple with why it is important that we are making progress as a warrior for the Lord. A huge key to our success in developing sufficient warrior skills will be to know God’s Word. The first piece of armor described is to have our loins girded with truth. Certainly no true victory can come while we are believing and acting on a lie. Many have and will fight hard while believing a lie, but their victories will be short-lived. To gain any eternal reward, we must be fighting on the side of the eventual winner and ruler of the universe- the Lord Jesus Christ. Some people think what I just stated is simply “church talk”, suitable only for little kids and older ladies. Therein lies the problem for any with such a notion; your personal world view is lacking in Biblical clarity. You can criticize both the Bible and those who believe it, but one day soon you will be personally judged on the basis of its truth. Not your truth, but God’s truth. It would be a really good idea for everyone to spend adequate time in the Scriptures since what is written there has serious ramifications for your future. Developing good worship skills goes right along with a fuller understanding of God’s Word. Worship isn’t just three hymns and a sermon-worship engages the whole being in honoring the God of creation. It’s not just lipservice and mouthing some songs or prayers- it is speaking to God from the head and from the heart. Total engagement body, soul, and spirit. True worship begins with a personal relationship with Jesus, and that itself is dynamic. Relationships demand interchange and communication, and your relationship with God is no different. Daily we Christians need to interact with our Lord through the pages of Scripture and the musings of our minds. Conversing with the One who redeemed you should be ongoing and delightful. An occasional cry for help is OK, but the bulk of our conversations with God ought to be more informal and filled with gratitude. In so doing we will define ourselves as belonging to Him and deepen our walk as we get more fully acquainted with His majesty. In marriage there are many ways we express our love for our mate. Likewise in your relationship with Jesus there should be many expressions of your love for Him, shown on a daily basis, not just on Sunday. A true worship warrior exudes gratitude and love and is focused on things eternal. They have goals that are Kingdom-oriented and lifestyles that demonstrate commitment. We can win the battle against the dark side so long as we stay plugged into the power from on high. Jesus already thumped the devil at the cross and again at the tomb, and He has enabled us to get victory over him and his demonic forces through His power. It should be the devil who is on the run- not believers in Jesus. As Pastor Gordon Peterson used to say on his radio program: “Today, let’s bust the devils’ horns off and put a kink in his tail!” Who wants to be a worship warrior? I hope each of you who claim to be followers of Christ eagerly volunteer for this duty. It is your destiny to do so, and this world desperately needs us to be salt and light. For a few more ideas check out our website at www.alcworshipwarriors.org Jim pastors Abundant Life Church which meets each Sunday at 10:00 am at 4380 Highway 66 just east of I25.

Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine An Excerpt from “The Velveteen Rabbit”

by Margery Williams, 1922 This very touching excerpt is from the well known story about a stuffed animal rabbit that is given to a boy in his stocking. When the the Rabbit is placed in the nursery, he notices the personalities and interactions of the toys. The Rabbit has a few questions, and understands that the Skin Horse is the right person with which to speak. “What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” “I suppose you are Real?” said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not said it, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse only smiled. “The Boy’s Uncle made me Real,” he said. “That was a great many years ago; but once you are Real you can’t become unreal again. It lasts for always.” Daisy Lear, MSOM, Dipl.Ac., L.Ac., practices Chinese medicine & acupuncture in Longmont (303)587-3557 daisylear@gmail.com. HEALTHY

Urban vs. Suburban

I recently had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful city of San Francisco. I was very intrigued with the idea of watching people come and go down the busy city sidewalks. I stopped at a café and just sat and watched people, wondering how their lives were different than my own. Staying in the city for a week taught me just how much urban citizens “move” more than us suburban folks. I am an avid Fitbit user. So I had an actual log of how many steps per day I was walking and the amount of mileage I traveled. I was shocked to see that I doubled my steps and mileage each and every day that I was in the city. Now granted, I was doing a lot of sightseeing, but all in all, I was moving more because of the public transportation that I was using. Each time I wanted to go anywhere, I would walk down to the trolley or subway which is more than a few blocks distance. If I wanted coffee, that was also a few blocks away. Most city people walk everywhere that they go. They also ride bikes. Walking and riding bicycles does not allow for a person to stock up at the grocery store, so they end up making small trips each day to the market. I talked to several people from different cultures while I was in the city to see how their day-to-day activities played out; and, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how active these people are…not intentionally… but purposefully. This may explain why the obesity rates are lower in some urban areas. I had a fantastic time on my trip and thoroughly enjoyed being “purposefully” active just trying to get around and explore. We as a community may need to explore how we can better utilize our trail systems to get moving. A great way to add purposeful movement into your day may be to bike down to the grocery store for a few items or instead of driving yourself to the coffee shop on the weekend, walk or bike there. We have it too easy with the convenience of our cars. We end up sitting most of our days at work and in the car. Try to add more movement by walking or biking. Save some gas and get healthy at the same time. If you need some accountability and some new ideas about how to incorporate movement into your daily life, give me a call. I can help you add intentional exercise into your daily routine. Get your Fitbit wireless activity monitor for free with your first purchase of a 10-pack of training sessions. Words of Encouragement Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you." Psalm 25:4-5

Message: What a wonderful prayer to pray, especially when the way ahead is not at all clear. If you need to know God's way for you on something, pray this prayer—slowly, thoughtfully, from the heart. Ask God to show you the right path. Be open to his leading from his Word, his truth. Remember that he is the God who saves you in Jesus. Put your full hope in him, for he is worthy of your trust. He will show you the way. He is light and does not want to keep you in the dark. —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions

DDS will be presenting Maperture®, a powerful web based map solution used to manage and view mapping data. Powered by Geocortex Essentials and Esri ArcGIS Server technologies, Maperture® allows users to query public domain or subscription-based oil and gas data, analyze the information, generate reports, print maps, and access the information from any location via a desktop browser or mobile device. This exciting technology presents valuable information in a custom-built interface specialized to a customer’s needs. Maperture® minimizes the need for desktop GIS and puts the power of mapping into the hands of executive level decision makers through its easy to use “wizard” interface. “We incorporate web based GIS technologies developed by Latitude Geographics and Esri, and expand on those technologies through custom development. Bat Found in Historic Firestone Home Tests Positive for Rabies Firestone Police Department Reminds Pet Owners to Receive Regular Vaccinations

The Firestone Police Department Animal Control division picked up a bat that was brought inside a home in Historic Firestone by the family cat on July 23, 2014. On July 25 tests confirmed the bat was positive for the rabies virus. The cat owners were unable to provide proof of rabies vaccinations for the cat, resulting in the cat being humanely euthanized to present the spread of the disease. Household members were the bat was found are currently undergoing rabies vaccinations. The Firestone Police Department wants to remind all pet owners of the importance of making sure pets receive regular vaccinations, including rabies. Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The vast majority of rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each year occur in wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and then death. Early rabies symptoms found in human are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, headache and general weakness or discomfort. As the disease progresses, more specific symptoms appear and may include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, slight or partial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hyper salivation (increase in saliva), difficulty swallowing and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of symptom onset. Individuals should report any animals showing the above symptoms or bats inside the home directly to Weld County Dispatch at 720-652-4222. For more information about rabies, visit the Weld County Health Department website at http://www.co.weld. co.us/Departments/HealthEnvironment/index.html.

Writing for the Soul-Serendipity

By Jerry B. Jenkins, Special to ASSIST News Service BLACK FOREST, CO (ANS) -- My oldest daughter, son-in-law, and kids have been here for the holiday weekend. We went out to get a new paper cutter a couple of days ago (so we could cut the kids' photos ... you know how it goes), but when we got home, I'd gotten everything but the paper cutter. So this morning, before they leave to go back to Georgia, I told Ashley, "We have to go to Target." On the way, I told her that my agent wanted me to look at some devotionals (for a proposal) other than something written by Sarah Young. :) Naturally, yesterday when we were at Barnes and Noble I forgot (I need a vacation, apparently), so I said to Ashley, "Please don't let me leave Target without going to look at the books and without a paper cutter." (We both got a kick out of it.) So, first things first. Let's go look at the books. While in that department we hear this man (he was pretty loud) saying that "I don't believe in all this mumbo-jumbo but I really need to find these books." He walked away, came back, and this time he was with a sales clerk. "What are the names of the books?" the clerk asked. "The first one is called Left Behind and then I don't know how many come after that." I turned around and said, "I think there are about twelve." And I told him about the movie coming out i n September with Nick Cage, etc. He said, "You seem to know a lot about the books." I said (very matter-of-factly), "Well, I know Jerry Jenkins, the writer of the books." He asked, "Weren't there two writers?" And I explained how all that worked. He said, "And you know one of them?" I said, "Yes. I consider him a friend." Then I suggested he

try Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Family Christian Stores. "But not today," I said. "They won't be open today. But they can order all of them for you." He was amazed that a bookstore would not be open on a Sunday. He also asked me if you were a priest and he reiterated that he was not religious, but he really needed to finish the book. "I started reading it five years ago," he said. "It belonged to a buddy of mine but then I didn't get to finish it." I wished him the best in finding the books and he walked away after saying thank you. Minutes later he found my daughter and me in another department. "I told my buddy I needed to find something, but the truth is I had to come find you again. Here's the deal," he said, tears filling his eyes. "I'm in my early forties and I've been sick since I was 19. I'm pretty mad at God right now. I've had cancer for the past five years. First in my colon, then in my lungs, and now in my stomach. I've had more than fifty su rgeries and I have more scheduled." He showed us a few of his scars and even one place that still had stitches. "The doctors tell me I have about six months to live and I feel like I have to read those books. I have to figure all this out." Of course my daughter and I talked to him about relationship with God ... with Jesus. About our bodies not being the end of all life. That we--all of us--will spend eternity either with the Lord or with the other guy. I told him how I'd grown up in church my whole life but in my mid to late 20s I was a MESS. I asked Jesus to come into my heart. To change me. And he did! He told me he needed to see to believe. I remembered and shared the line from The Santa Clause where the little elf told "Scott Calvin" that for adults seeing is believing but for children believing is seeing. Then I quoted Matthew 18:3. Of course by now he is crying. I am crying. I got his name and mailing address along with his email address. I'm going to send him my novel (and the movie) Unconditional. I am hoping you might want to send him, if only, Left Behind, with a little note of encouragement.

Eight Frederick Neighborhoods to Participate in National Night Out Each block captain to put on event for their neighbors

Eight Frederick neighborhoods will participate in the 31st Annual National Night Out (NNO) on Tuesday, August 5th. Neighborhood Watch groups in Eagle Valley, The Farm, Grove Townhomes, Maplewood, Moore Farm, Prairie Greens, Rinn Valley, and Summit View will have gatherings to get to know their neighbors and stand against crime. NNO is also designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Each neighborhood event is put together by the individual Block Captains in Frederick’s Neighborhood Watch program, which is an organized way for the Frederick Police Department to notify and share information with one point of contact to distribute out to their neighborhood. Chick-fil-A at Larkridge will be providing complimentary cookies to each neighborhood’s event. “National Night Out is going strong in Frederick in its sixth year,” said Frederick Chief of Police Gary Barbour. “Our Neighborhood Watch program is one of the best in the area and helps the police department connect with the community to keep safety a priority.” Anyone interested in learning more about or joining the Neighborhood Watch Program is encouraged to contact the Frederick Police Department at 720.382.5700.

Encouragement for Today "The people who had moved to Judah from Israel, and the people of Judah themselves, brought in the tithes of their cattle, sheep, and goats and a tithe of the things that had been dedicated to the LORD their God, and they piled them up in great heaps. They began piling them up in late spring, and the heaps continued to grow until early autumn. When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw these huge piles, they thanked the LORD and his people Israel! 'Where did all this come from?' Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites. And Azariah the high priest, from the family of Zadok, replied, 'Since the people began bringing their gifts to the LORD's Temple, we have had enough to eat and plenty to spare. The LORD has blessed his people, and all this is left over.'" 2 Chronicles 31:6-10

God's economy does not depend on human markets. It depends on his people acting faithfully. Note well it was the people's acts of giving that led to "enough to eat and plenty to spare." If you've been tempted to quit giving due to financial stress, don't! In faith, give of whatever God is giving to you, and watch him bless. His blessing brings "enough to eat and plenty to spare." Operate on God's economy, not the world's. —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions

SENIORS IN THE NEWS FOR AUGUST Weld County Senior Lunch Program

Every Thursday at noon, all Firestone, Frederick and Dacono seniors (60+) can get a hot, nutritious meal for a suggested donation of $3.00 at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center located at 701 Fifth St, Fredrick. The program is funded through the Area Agency on Aging and is the Weld County Nutrition Lunch program for Carbon Valley. This same program also provides meals at other sites throughout Weld County, making it easy for seniors to get a very inexpensive nutritious lunch every day of the week if desired. Additionally, it affords seniors an opportunity to make new friends and provides a regular location to meet and socialize. Often this is very important as individuals age to remain healthy in body and spirit. The meals are prepared in Greeley by the UNC Dining Services under the direction of a Nutritionist and are nutritionally planned meeting 33 and 1/3 of the recommended dietary intake. Each week the meals are trucked down from Greeley and served piping hot by dedicated volunteers to local seniors. Lee Athmann is the man who took the lead to get the Weld County Senior Lunch Program into our community. “I got a brochure from Meredith Skoglund one day in February2013” Lee stated, and he decided to check it out at the Mead site. He found the lunch to be nutritious and delicious, and being the altruistic person he is, wanted the program for the seniors in his local community. And did he ever jump through hoops to make it happen. Lee Athmann contacted Aleta Purcell, then Executive Director at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center, and she put him in touch with Meredith Skoglund with the Area Agency on Aging in Greeley. The two of them reviewed many possible host sites, but when the Recreation Center stepped up to offer their services, it was decided to accept the offer. The Recreation Center kindly paid for some renovations while Weld County purchased a fancy commercial dishwasher to bring the program compliant so the program could get a state licensed food handling permit. “We did face some opposition,” Lee explained. But with Lee’s political prowess, those problems were quickly dispelled. It took over eight months of Lee’s volunteer time to get this program up and running. When asked why he did it, he responded, “I felt in my heart a need to feed less fortunate seniors outside of the Senior Center.” The first Carbon Valley lunch was served on September 5, 2013. Since that time, the program has served 1,092 meals at this location alone. The lunches run smoothly, and the participants enjoy a scrumptious and fun congregate meal because of our dedicated volunteers. Without our volunteers, this program

would simply not happen. Thirteen volunteers, 99% seniors themselves, manage the program in Carbon Valley. They handle all the host, reception, bookkeeping, i n v e n t o r y, serving, cleaning, room preparation and dishwashing duties. They come in every Thursday without fail to handle all the duties required, regardless of weather conditions. All are retired themselves, except myself. They don’t have to be there. They simply want to be. The volunteers came to the program for a variety of reasons. Maureen Jepson says she was overjoyed about the program’s intent of bringing “nutritional meals to [the] area seniors for a $3.00 donation, or nothing, if the person could not afford it.” She thought that was “terrific – something that would benefit people greatly, and especially the thought of providing an opportunity to folks that may not care to cook for themselves every day and yet need the nutrition.” She talks of her great enjoyment she receives from conversations and joking around with the other seniors and fellow volunteers. Maureen said the experience “has taught her to be more patient”, that “I realized that I tend to be a bit bossy.” She’s not sure she’ll be able to cure the bossiness, but at least a shortcoming has been identified. Lee Athmann and Maureen Jepson and myself included wish the program could expand to include transportation services to housebound seniors. We have recently been discussing this very subject, but finding an organization that will provide reliable transportation completely separate from our program has been difficult. We also want to see the number of seniors aware of and attending the lunch increase outside for all seniors in the area. We need people to spread the word. To reserve a meal, seniors are required to phone in Wednesday before 11:00 am at 303-833-3660. Menus can be viewed at http://www.co.weld.co.us/ Departments/HumanServices/AreaAgencyonAgingAAA/ SeniorNutrition.html The Weld County meals are Thursday’s. The Carbon Valley Recreation Center is located at 701 5th St., Frederick. Guests under 60 are welcome, however there is a $10 per plate charge to cover the cost of the meal.

Tina Turner Sings 'Amazing Grace'

By Chaplain Jim Linzey (Ret.), Special to ASSIST News Service SAN DIEGO, CA (ANS) -- Take little Anna Mae Bullock as an example of a marvelous creation of God who was badly hurt by a small rural local church when she was a young girl. As depicted in the feature film "What's Love Got To Do With It", Anna Mae was the only little girl in the church choir, consisting of older teens and adults in an African-American church. Reared in the broken home of "party girls" with the exception of her grandmother who was truly a righteous woman of God, the only music Anna Mae understood in the home was bar singing-rhythm and blues and jazz. However, her church had not embraced such cultural forms of music, but clung to pure, traditional church music. One midweek evening, innocent and unsuspecting, little Anna Mae made her way by herself to choir rehearsal. The choir was rehearsing for Sunday's divine worship service. While the choir was rehearsing under the direction of a formal choir director, Anna Mae sang by ear in beautiful harmony-but with rhythm and clapping. She offered up to God her gift of song the only way she knew-from the heart, but in the only musical form to which she was accustomed. The choir director stopped rehearsal in the middle of the piece and gave Anna Mae a cold stare-then resumed directing the choir. When the choir reached a certain section of the piece, Anna Mae again diverted into the most amazing harmony, with perfect pitch, but with rhythm and clapping unto the Lord. The choir director again stopped the rehearsal in the middle of the piece, called Anna Mae out in front of the choir, looked down at her with a cold authoritative stare. Without a word, little Anna Mae broke into tears, walked down the aisle by her lonesome, and out the church doors, never to darken the doors of any church again. Anna Mae was condemned to live her childhood outside the community of faith, because, as innocent and as pure before God as she was, she was unacceptable to the people of God. In her

little mind, she felt like dirt in their eyes. In her little worldview, God hated her. It was okay for the pastor to preach, "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." But they judged little Anna Mae. They did not think God would accept her gift of song. The fact is that they played the role of God; they did not accept her gift of song. Confusion was in their minds as to who God was, while little Anna Mae was at peace with God insofar as she knew Him-until that evening, that awful, dreadful, dark evening of despair when she was humiliated and collapsed into tears. Then one day, her mother and older sister abandoned little Anna Mae, leaving her with her dear grandmother. Off they fled in her mother's pickup truck, scurrying out of the dirt driveway of their dilapidated rural house, and down the dirt road to find another life for themselves in the city. Forced to find another place to live, Anna Mae's grandmother climbed onto her gentle, old horse, taking little Anna Mae with her, to continue their impoverished, rural, yet more wholesome, lifestyle. Little Anna Mae was her grandmother's gift to the Church; but she became Tina Turner and was God's gift to the world. Though God's "own" rejected her, she truly became a source of cultural enrichment for the world to appreciate. She truly was God's own. Now, years later, I have learned that Tina Turner has come full circle, singing "Amazing Grace" on an album titled Beyond 'Love Within.' It seems that the same Spirit that drew little Anna Mae to worship God with her gift of song so long ago has been renewed in the adult Tina Turner. Truly, from the abundance of the heart does one's mouth sing.

Country music filled the park Friday night as almost 700 packed Hart Park in Firestone on July 25, 2014, for another great Food & Flick Friday. We talked about when he got out of the hospital, not if. It Several years later, I began to interview other people who’d never occurred to me that my brother might not be in my life.

For Those Who Grieve SIBLING LOSS

lost siblings to tell me their stories. I’d never met anyone else who’d lost a sibling—that I knew of—and I wanted to know if there were similarities in our experiences. It turned out, there were—the fact that the loss had often been overlooked, the suppression of the grief, the complicated dynamics within families who often couldn’t discuss the lost person, the identity crisis, the sense of something important missing, the difficulty moving on in life, and, in some cases, the sense of guilt for surviving. Most importantly, the interviews also revealed what seemed to me important tasks, for lack of a better word, that those of us who have lost siblings need to accomplish in order to find a way to go on. These are some of them: Claiming the loss: Most people who have lost siblings get the message that the loss wasn’t really theirs to mourn. They’re told it’s harder on the parents, or the children, or the spouse. And so they submerge their grief and try to muscle forward. It doesn’t work. So the first step for any of us is to find a way to acknowledge for ourselves that the loss was ours, that it mattered, and that we deserve the time and space to mourn it. People find different ways to do this—by telling their story to a good friend, by writing about it, by making a scrapbook of the relationship, writing songs, etc. It doesn’t matter how they do it, only that they do it. It’s the first and most important step into learning to move forward. Re-forming an identity: Losing a sibling can be like having an arm or leg amputated… you can function, but you might feel off balance, not yourself. Some people unconsciously even find “substitute” siblings via friends or partners. To truly integrate the meaning of the loss into your life, however, requires some serious thinking about who you were, on your own, and in your family, when he or she is no longer here, and who you are now that they are no longer here. What role did your brother or sister play in your life? Can you do some of the things he or she used to do for you for yourself? Are you forced into a family role you’d rather not play? Carrying: Siblings are parallel travelers in life. We expect them to be there, in one way or another, throughout childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. We compare and contrast ourselves with them all the while. When it doesn’t work out that way, we’re shocked, and many of us are thrown off balance by the arbitrary nature of fate. Why him or her? Why not me? And most of us need to keep our siblings with us, to carry them forward in our lives. We still want them as reference points. It’s a way of symbolically acknowledging the relationship’s significance and our sense of continued connection to that person. Someone who lost a sibling to cancer might volunteer for the local cancer society. Someone whose brother was a runner might run a race in his honor. What all this adds up to, of course, is that those of us who have lost a brother or sister need to have that loss recognized. It’s not easier than losing a child, or easier than losing a parent, or harder than something else. It’s our loss. It’s important, and painful, for us. And we can’t let anyone tell us anything different.
