...that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. 2 Cor 5:19a
Unplugged at Firestone Charter Academy
Firestone Charter Academy recently embraced its mission of “technology with a purpose” through two designated “Unplugged Days” on October 10th and November 8th. During these days, educators at the academy reverted to traditional teacher methods, fostering an environment where students learned without the aid of technology. A notable highlight of this initiative was Mr. Santanna’s engaging presentation to fourth-grade students about the Middle Ages. Bringing artifacts and facsimiles from the era, he provided students with tangible connections to historical technology. The students, in turn, showcased impressive knowledge of the time period. Even the innovation teacher, Mrs. Evers, participated in the unplugged days by guiding students in learning activities. Logic Academy students collaborated on a structural engineering project, constructing bridges solely from spaghetti and hot glue. The ongoing testing revealed that the current highest load-bearing capacity of these creative structures was an impressive twelve books. In the lower grades, students explored pixelated images by creating an 800 X 1200 resolution image using binary pixels. Meanwhile, second and third-graders worked collaboratively to discover the optimal use of gumdrops and toothpicks to support the weight of a book. The triangular shape emerged as the most robust design, prompting students to not only engineer but also unleash their creativity by repurposing materials for various projects. Teachers employed diverse instructional strategies, including Kagan group work methods, chants for memorization, and thinking games. Students delved into reading books and documenting their learning experiences, reinforcing the academy’s commitment to Classical and Core Knowledge education. These activities exemplify the academy’s mission to foster critical thinking and creativity among students. By exploring historical impacts and connections between technology, music, art, and literature, students broaden their literacy base. The academy emphasizes that learning goes beyond finding the answers on a computer, it involves experiencing the world in diverse ways. Firestone Charter Academy positions itself as a school where creativity, ingenuity, and reason thrive through a curriculum that extends beyond the confines of technology. Students and teachers alike recognize that technology encompasses more than just computers, and true learning involves developing innovative solutions and posing new questions. Choosing Firestone Charter Academy means choosing an educational environment where students are equipped to understand the global impact of history and contribute meaningfully to the world. Giving Thanks from the Carbon Valley Half-Marathon & 5k to All of You!
While the actual event date for the Carbon Valley Half-Marathon and 5k isn’t until May 11th, 2024, the planning has already begun. It takes months of planning to run such an event and we couldn’t do it without all of you - the volunteers, the vendors, the sponsors, the participants, and all the spectators/support crews. We have been so blessed for all the past help and we are thankful already for all the help we have received in preparation for the 2024 event. To date, $174,000 has been donated to Colorado Children’s Hospital for Autism Research! We are so proud of this and we couldn’t have done this without all of your support. Our goal for the 2024 event is to double the race participation and increase sponsor and vendor participation while keeping volunteers at the same level. You can contact any of us through our website, www.cvhalfmarathon.org, to participate in any way! We are looking forward to the best year yet. 2024 Board – Left to Right - Michelle Dhieuxz: Secretary, Roxanne Chavez: Treasurer, Jody Whitmore: Volunteer Chair, Lida Johnson: Fundraising Chair, Monica Vickers: Race Dir., and Mike Sindelar: Co-Founder and Course Dir.
