Fields at Firestone Regional Sports Complex to Be Named to Honor Mark Martinez and Joey Irwin Proclamation Planned for Firestone Town Trustee Board Meeting

AsÂ

a tribute to Mark Martinez and Joey Irwin, the two men killed in a home explosion on April 17, 2017, the Town of Firestone will be naming two of the ballfields at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex in their honor when the fields open for the Spring season in early March. Brothersin-law, Irwin and Martinez loved playing baseball while growing up in the Carbon Valley. Martinez carried that love of baseball into adulthood as a volunteer youth softball coach in the Firestone community. The Town of Firestone’s Mayor, Paul Sorensen, was scheduled to make a proclamation announcing the naming of the fields at the upcoming Town Board Meeting scheduled for Wed, Jan. 24, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Members of the public were invited to attend the reading of the proclamation. According to Firestone town manager Bruce Nickerson, “Mark and Joey made an indelible impression on so many people throughout Firestone and the Carbon Valley. The naming of these two fields in honor of Mark and Joey speaks to the community’s love for them and their families, and to all of us committed to remembering their legacies and what they contributed to our community.

The Firestone Regional Sports Complex is located at the corner of Firestone Blvd. and Frontier St. Two of the three fields will be named Martinez Field and Irwin Field in their honor. The third field is named Bertron Field in memory of Tristin Coty Bertron, a young Firestone resident who tragically lost his life in an accident in 2006. The date for the opening of the fields will depend on weather. A subsequent announcement will be made with the specifics regarding the dedication ceremony. For more information on Firestone visit The Town of Firestone website at: www.firestoneco.gov. Structured Yet Flexible

R

ecently, several attendees at a meeting were discussing the benefits of electronic calendars and reminders and such. They said that if it isn’t on the calendar, it won’t happen but everything on the calendar usually does happen. The majority of the group commented that they were very structured, giving credit to their e-calendars. I kept my mouth shut during that conversation because, truth be told, I have virtually zero structure in my life. The one thing I try to do regularly is have my grandkids for a sleepover one night a week. I remained silent because I was embarrassed. After all, I’m a business woman and I felt like a slacker. There has been little structure in my life since 1990, the year my daughter died. I found that most of the appointments I made I ended up cancelling unless it was to a doctor for illness for one of my kids. For years I just wasn’t up to “putting on a smile” and faking my way through the day. Since most people dislike a Debbie Downer, it was just easier to stay in my office, in solitude. During those years, I had no need of any type of calendar. We woke up, went to school and work. We ate dinner. We went to bed. A weekly planner does sit on my desk these days and I do make a few appointments and jot down notes in it. My calendar, however, is not my task

master. The last five years or so, I’ve found myself being more available to whomever or whatever needs to be attended to. While I used to feel guilty about cancelling or rescheduling because of conflicts, I now take a step back and consider my options. When one of the two options is a person, the person wins most every time. I know I can always gain more training another time. I can network next month. I can workout later in the day (LOL). If I have a friend in need, I strive to be available to the friend. Sometimes, it’s not another person, it’s me, that needs the down time. Being honest about the situations facing me is always the best policy, even when it’s with myself. Sadly, it’s taken me nearly all my life to learn that. Loving my neighbor as myself has been a difficult lesson to learn. This week is a crazy week because it’s deadline time. All sorts of odd situations occur 4-5 days before press. Computer breaks down, run out of paper for proofing, I get sick, a friend comes in from out of town. These situations can’t be put on a calendar. I can’t schedule sickness or a computer crash. Stuff just happens when it happens. Melt downs were frequent three years ago. I’m thankful to say, I’m learning to roll

Proverbs 3:5-12 Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! Honor GOD with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over. But don’t, dear friend, resent GOD’s discipline; don’t sulk under his loving correction. It’s the child he loves that GOD corrects; a father’s delight is behind all this.

with it…whatever it may be. Today, it was driving to Denver and visiting with friends, one from New York. We didn’t go out to eat or shop, we just talked. And it was fantastic. It was nice to catch up and wind down. I sensed, in my soul, I was supposed to take the time, so I did. What about press tomorrow? It’s still there, like every month for the last 19 years. But I am at peace, in my mind and my heart, that what needs to get done, will get done. I’m finally learning that I must be flexible so that God can do what He wants to do when He wants to do it. Things usually work out best that way.

irestone, aka “A Community in Motion” needs a “Mayor in Motion.” One of the many tasks as mayor is to represent the community of Firestone at every level of government: State, County, and Community. The demographics for Weld County, specific to the Carbon Valley for the next seven years indicate a growth increase of 39%. Now is the time for Firestone to plan for this growth. The data speaks to the need for Firestone to move forward and decide how to respond to the many opportunities this growth offers our citizens. My vision is for Firestone to lead the way in determining the best growth pattern for our community as well as the Carbon Valley. I have the trusted leadership skills necessary to bring people together to put feet to their dreams. The more people are heard the more they step up to serve. My story is from the old 17th-century priest who was appointed to take over his first parish. All his predecessors kept to themselves, cloistered in the church. In his first Mass he said it was his plan and desire to be the ‘people’s priest’ and he served his parish in that manner all his life. I am passionate about helping others and I want to be the People's Mayor. I will listen and hear what the people of Firestone want their community to be. It’s not what I can do; it’s what we can do together. I am asking for YOUR vote to be the next Mayor of Firestone.

A

A Vote For Fred Is A Vote For Frederick

M

y name is FRED L. SKATES and I reside at 8006 Raspberry Dr. in Frederick. Prior to my first appointment to the Board Of Trusteees for the town of Frederick, I served on the Parks, Open Space and Trails commission, (POST). I was first appointed to serve out a term for a Trustee that left town, I was chosen from a slate of ten candidates that applied for that vacancy. My second appointment to the Board was to fulfill the vacancy when Tony Carey was elected to be Mayor. In 2014, I ran for and was elected to the Board to serve a four year term which will expire in 2018. It has been my pleasure to not only serve on The Board Of Trustees, but also to have served on the Miners Day Committee for the last six years. I am also involved in community activities that not only benefit the residents of Frederick, but also the surrounding communities as well. I believe we are all in this together to make our combined area a better place to live, work and play. The population growth of Frederick and the surrounding area means we need to economically grow with new business and opportunities that will provide jobs locally and hopefully keep residents in the community. An immense shortage of places for people to rent as well as any Senior homes for our growing Senior residents needs to be addressed NOW!! I believe in a strong economic development and housing for low income residents and Seniors is an important issue that needs to be at the top order of consideration by the Town Of Frederick and The Board Of Trustees. I have always been very proud to be a resident of Frederick and will always do what is necessary to help move the Town forward. I would respecfully thank you for your vote.

Area Mayors’ Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

z As we wind down from 2017, we look forward to proceeding with many exciting community projects for 2018. Paul Sorensen z Of course, a major focus will be the final design and initial construction of the voter approved Firestone Police Station. The location of the new Police Station will be east of a new extended section of Park Avenue. Park Avenue lines up with Devonshire Street to the north. The Police Station will be located approximately 300-feet south of Sable Avenue. The total size of the single-story Police Station will be approximately 29,000 square feet, which will include a municipal court room and a combined community/police training room. Final design documents should be completed by mid-2018 with construction beginning soon thereafter. The Police Station is expected to open in the fall of 2019. The new municipal court room will also function for meetings of the Town Board of Trustees, Planning Commission, and other Town Boards, Commissions and Committees. This will allow the Town to add much needed additional office space to our existing Town Hall

MEAD MAYOR, GARY SHIELDS

z Prior to writing these monthly articles I like to look back at my previous years articles of the same month to reflect upon what we Gary Shields may have been experiencing or may have been concerned with at any particular time as well as to determine if there are any reoccurring issues or events that may need to be addressed or brought to your attention.

building and extend its useful life for many years into the future. Also, despite the overwhelming support of Firestone citizens who voted in favor of funding the much needed Police Station, the Town was recently informed that the Colorado Department of Local Affairs awarded Firestone an $800,000 grant to exclusively be used for the Police Station. z The design of the bridge extension of McClure Street from First Street to Colorado Boulevard is now complete. With a contractor now selected, construction is expected to begin soon. The bridge and street extension should be completed and open sometime in the late summer of 2018. In addition to providing a much-needed access point to Colorado Boulevard from First Street, the project will also correct the nuisance drainage problem that has been impacted that area for decades. Firestone extends its appreciation to both Weld County and the Town of Frederick for cooperating on some of the technical engineering design coordination matters associated with this project. z Recently, the Town Board awarded a civil engineering design contract for the widening and reconstruction of McClure Avenue east of First Street. The design will provide for a full two-lane street section. This design is expected to be completed during the first part of 2018 and construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018. z The Town will continue with its street preservation program in 2018. In 2017, approximately 7 miles of Firestone streets were preserved by first filling the cracks in the streets, applying a leveling coat, then a slurry finish coat and finally adding stripping where necessary. This program, is funded by the targeted streets Weld County Launches Text-to-911 Service z In a county registering almost 4,000 square miles, facilitating

quick responses in an emergency is a big responsibility. Beginning December 4, residents and visitors throughout Weld County will have another tool to use in an emergency: Text-to-911. Promoted under the national theme Call if You Can, Text if You Can’t, the Text-to-911 service allows people throughout Weld County to reach 911 via text during an emergency if calling is not an option. Text-to-911 can be beneficial in many different scenarios, including assisting those with hearing disabilities, allowing contact with 911 during a crime when calling might put someone in danger, or contacting 911 when signal strength is too weak to place a call. Text-to-911 is available to anyone who has a phone with text message capability and is using a participating wireless provider. Currently, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon support Text-to-911 in Weld County. For more information, go to www.weldgov.com

and parks one percent sales tax question which was approved by Firestone voters in 2013. By keeping our Firestone streets in great repair, they not only are safer and more pleasant to drive upon, but they will also last for many decades into the future. z In 2018, the Town plans to design and construct the initial phase of a plaza complex in Central Park, south of the High Plains regional library. The plaza would be located on the west side of the extension of Park Avenue. The overall complex is initially planned to be comprised of such major components as a plaza, passive sitting areas, parking lots, splash park facility, picnic shelters, landscaping, playground, restrooms and changing areas, trail connections, etc. The initial design will be by the Firestone Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Board at their noticed public meetings. z Once the design is complete, the Town will determine a phasing plan for construction of the project, which will be based on funds available from the Firestone Regional Impact Fee. The Regional Park Impact Fee fund is derived from impact fees paid on new residential construction and can only be used in designated regional type parks, such as Central Park. z These are just a few of the many exciting projects the Town will move forward with in 2018. And of course, the Town will continue with its master planning and economic development planning processes, water conservation programs, maintaining and expanding its parks and trail facilities, holding its many Firestone community events, etc. z Again, Happy New Year to all! Let’s all work together to continue to make Firestone the greatest community it can be and truly a Community in Motion! information to serve you better.

23, 2018. Look for improved navigation, easier payment links, and more

z Over the past 4 years of writing to you I have observed that there is often a pattern in what we are experiencing, and it appears that the pattern for February has been to address issues that we are faced with regarding growth. Specifically, how do we address growth while maintaining the attributes of our town that we enjoy and appreciate so much. z There is no doubt that this will also be a major topic in the months to come and in the upcoming April elections as I am already seeing posts about it on various local media sites. z With that being said, I want to thank everyone who has participated in the current updates of the Comprehensive Plan. I firmly believe that it is only through diverse input into this plan that we will be able to successfully address and accommodate the major concerns and end up with a plan that is suitable to guide our town into the future. z If you are not familiar with what the comprehensive plan

is, it is a document that is developed and adopted by the planning commission that considers community goals and aspirations in terms of development. Once completed, the comprehensive plan dictates public policy in terms of transportation, utilities, land use, recreation and housing. The entire process is very thorough and costly and typically only occurs about every 10 years. The current update process started in late 2016 and is now in its final stages. z I encourage everyone who has questions about the future growth and development of our town to visit the town’s website and read through the available resources regarding the plan and the process. I am hopeful that you will find that there has been a great deal of effort and meticulous detail involved in putting the plan together and that the future of our town is very bright indeed. z As always, if you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Bobbi Sindelar for Firestone Mayor

H

ello Firestone! I am your current Mayor Pro-Tem Bobbi Sindelar. I am running for Mayor in our 2018 election on April 3rd and ask for your vote! I have lived and worked here since 2000. My husband Mike and I plan to be here for a long time and I am very motivated to help do everything possible to help Firestone realizes it's full and excellent potential. I have a focus on keeping taxes low and promoting sensible economic development to attract the kind of businesses and services that would make living here more convenient and fun. I would like to do all we can to attract many more sit down restaurants, shopping, family fun, young adult and senior activities and senior housing. Also, the development of our parks including Central Park, the future home of our new Police Station and Municipal Count recently approved by the voters. Equally if not more important is that we are good stewards, by taking special care of what we already have and preserving our towns wonderful charm while at the same time keeping taxes as low as possible by getting the most out of every dollar we spend. I have been serving our great town for going on 13 years, starting with the planning commission for 5 years and I then moved right on to the Board of Trustees in 2010. Currently serving as Mayor Pro-Tem. I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together. I am excited to continue to enthusiastically serve Firestone families as your Mayor and ask for your vote on April 3rd in this mail in election. Please visit my campaign website at www.bobbisindelar.com for more information.

irestone Mayor Pro Tem Bobbi Sindelar, in my personal opinion, will make an outstanding Mayor. I have known Mayor Pro Tem Sindelar for the past eight years where Bobbi has served as a trustee for four years and Mayor Pro Tem for the last four years. For more than a decade Bobbi Sindelar has consistently demonstrated her love and pride in the Firestone community. An example is her involvement in our Parks & Trails Advisory Board. Before her election to the Firestone Town Board in 2010 Bobbi was and still is extremely involved in the design and high standards of our community parks and trails. The love for our Firestone community runs deep in the Sindelar family. Bobbi’s husband Mike and Bobbi’s sister Brenda Ridgley created our popular Half Marathon to benefit Autism. Firestone is a better place to call home because of this family’s compassion and love for our community. I am proud to have served the Firestone community as a Trustee, Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor since 2008. I am eligible to run for one more two year term, but when I heard that Mayor Pro Tem Sindelar was considering running for mayor this year I was encouraged and excited about the potential of having Bobbi as our next Mayor. I have total confidence that our community will continue to grow and be a leader in the Carbon Valley area if Bobbi is elected Mayor. Please take the time to talk with Bobbi and hear her vision. Bobbi has a beautiful family with school aged children and can relate to the needs of our young growing community. Join me in my support for the future Mayor of Firestone, Bobbi Sindelar.

Weld County Leader Announces Candidacy for District #2 Commissioner

C

olorado native, family man and community leader, Scott K. James has announced he will be running for Weld County Commissioner, District 2, in the 2018 election cycle. James has resided in Weld County for the majority of his life and his experience and leadership in Weld County makes him an excellent candidate for Commissioner. Currently he serves passionately as #OneProudMayor of Johnstown where he is steadfast to his conservative values and takes the ideas of fiscal responsibility, transparency, and constituent-first service to heart. Under his leadership, Johnstown is one of the fastest growing cities in Colorado and one of the few that are debt free. Personally, his history in Weld County dates to his childhood. While growing up in LaSalle, a town his great-grandfather helped found, he honored his work ethic and love for agriculture on area farms and ranches before spending 35-years pursuing his passion for communications as a regionally recognized radio personality. Outside of work, Scott has volunteered for years throughout Weld County and is passionate about his faith, family and community. Today, however, Scott is concerned about his home and that is why he believes it is time for change in Weld County. “Like you, I love Weld County. Because here you’ll find friendly, honest, hard-working people raising their families and chasing their dreams in God’s country. Straight-talk and handshakes still mean something in Weld. Our heritage is rich and our future is bright,” stated James. “Yet sadly, I’ve grown concerned about the county I love. I have a heart for the people

of Weld County and want to ensure that their government is as honest, transparent, and hard working as they are.” James is committed to responsive, representative government, one that cultivates a culture of communication and collaboration between elected leaders and the citizens they serve. A visionary who respects Weld County’s heritage while fostering its unlimited potential. Scott is committed to pro-business policies, public safety, improved roads and bridges, and supporting the backbone of Weld; agriculture and energy. Scott invites all supporters to join him for a campaign kickoff event, Tuesday, October 24th from 6:30-8:30 pm at Gourmet Grub on 35th Avenue in Greeley. More information on this event and other ways you can support Scott K. James and a New Day For Weld, visit www.JamesForWeld.com or email info@ jamesforweld.com.

Body + Soul Wellbeing

Food for the Soul-Advice From The Greatest Lover Of All Time

L

ots of men and a few women might make the claim of being the greatest lover of all time, but their voices would usually only be heard for a few miles. We think of the famous couple Romeo and Juliette as an example, but theirs was a made-up love story in the mind of William Shakespeare. His play was based on a real-life couple, but you’ve never heard of them. Perhaps you have known a couple or two who exemplified true love over a lifetime or even for a short time, or maybe you have family members who have been married “happily ever after” for decades. The love of my earthly life has stuck with me for nearly 50 years so far, but she still falls far short of the title of this article. We have all seen many romantic movies or tv shows which feature tremendous love and sacrifice between couples, but I would suggest that no matter how strong the attachment, it cannot beat the world’s best example of true love. And who might that be, you ask? I am happy to respond with the absolutely most ardent lover in all of history. His name is

Jesus, and before you run off to see what’s in the refrigerator, hear me out. Some will differ with me and say that God the Father qualifies, since He is the One who sent His only begotten Son to be the Savior of the world. And that surely is a loving sacrifice to make for any father, but in this case I believe the Son had the greater challenge. The mission Jesus was sent to accomplish was nothing less than to pay the penalty of sin for every human being who ever lived! Billions of earthlings who had or have (or will) commit trillions of sins. And somebody had to pay, or else each one would be held personally responsible when their time came to meet God. So Jesus took up the challenge, came to earth as a helpless baby, grew up in challenging times in a poor family, and spent three years ministering to whoever would listen. He then submitted to death on a Roman cross, dying as a criminal, although He was sinless. Even Pilate who

hat if a business was founded on the idea of giving back? What if in every area it thought about how it was impacting the world? What if it was intentional about using its profits to impact the world for good? This is Redemption Road Coffee’s heart’s desire. When we decided to launch a coffee roastery in November of 2015, we were intentional about how we bought coffee and who we sourced it from. We had a desire to purposefully pick farms that had programs in place to give back to their local community. This way, as we bought their coffee we were also helping educate the women who worked there, we were helping communities build schools, we were sponsoring kids to attend school for a year so they could make a better life for themselves. There are hundreds of organizations across the globe doing amazing work with little to no funding. These people are "all in", doing what they love simply because

it's what God has put in them. It is our hope that as Redemption Road Coffee grows through wholesale and retail accounts that we have the opportunity to find these people and fund them. This is why we created Redemption Road Coffee, to fund good. We love coffee. We love quality. We love people. But what motivates us more than anything is that we get to be on this amazing adventure to fund good in this world. Join us in doing good. Check out our website and try some of our coffee. Tell your friends about us, tell your local coffee shop or bakery about us. If your church has coffee, we would love to partner with them. Thanks so much for engaging in our story. We would love to talk with you. We can be reached at www.rrc.coffee or by phone at 970-572-7977. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Aaron & Jessica Harsch www.RedemptionRoadCoffee.com

ordered that He be crucified, admitted that Jesus was innocent. He publicly died a shameful death for crimes not committed. At this point a few of you are wondering what that has to do with being the greatest lover of all time… Here is how I see it. When anyone takes on the guilt of another and is willing to pay the penalty for someone else, he/she is heroic. When that penalty covers the wrongs of billions of people and makes it possible for each of them to enjoy eternal life instead of eternal death, that is love in action! No other example in history even comes close! You are welcome to disagree, but if you read carefully the story of Jesus in the gospels, you come face to face with a Man on a mission, and One who “set His face as a flint” to go to His death in Jerusalem. Total dedication to the will of His Father, and mission accomplished when He gave up his spirit and died. And He did it for you and for me, because “God so loved the

Active Life Chiropractic & Massage Center in Mead

A

ctive Life is a sports and family conservative care health clinic that provides chiropractic, massage therapy, exercise rehabilitation and trigger point dry needling all under one roof. Initial appointments with Dr. Andrew typically last 40 minutes and includes a one-onone comprehensive medical exam and movement screen, spinal adjustments, various muscle/soft tissue manual therapy techniques, and corrective exercises. Active Life opened in June of 2016 by Dr. Andrew Spiczenski & Joelle Khan. Andrew is the chiropractor on staff and Joelle is the massage therapist. Joelle & Andy have always wanted to live and work in Colorado and now share their passion and commitment with others. They strive to treat the cause of the problem and not just treat the symptoms. The two also provide a customized treatment care plan with each patient in order to make sure our patients have the best plan possible for their specific condition. Dr. Andrew treats any and all musculoskeletal condition including but not limited to, headaches, neck pain, lower back pain, rotator cuff injuries, plantar fasciitis, knee injuries, tennis/golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel, foot/ankle problems, etc. Dr. Andrew’s patients vary from recreational and elite athletes, pregnant women, children, manual labor workers, desk jockeys, farmers and everyone in-between. “Living with pain is not the norm,” says the doctor. “You are not meant to live with pain as you get older and there are things that can be done to help out with that.” Massage therapist, Joelle provides a wide variety of massages including deep tissue, Swedish, Ayurvedic, Trigger Point, Aromatherapy and Sports Massages. Joelle has been trained in the art of massage in multiple countries and utilizes techniques from each school of thought. “Our patients have come from Denver all the way up to Cheyenne but a majority of them are from Mead, Longmont, Firestone and surrounding communities,” says Dr. Spiczenski.

Their next goal is to add a Physical Therapist to the clinic. This would allow a close, convenient option for physical therapy services for Mead and the surrounding communities. They also plan on eventually adding a Nurse Practitioner to the staff that would serve as a Primary Care Physician for the community. This would allow Active Life to be a convenient, one-stop health care clinic for Mead and all surrounding communities! Cheyenne Janus of Mead, CO is the Office Manager. Joelle is originally from Kingston, Jamaica and Andrew is from the small town of Barnesville, Ohio. Joelle & Andy are happy to be planting their roots in Colorado and look forward to raising a family and becoming more engrained in this wonderful community of Mead. Joelle & Andrew, are currently engaged and are getting married in Boulder this coming June. Andrew is an avid outdoorsman and hiker who loves taking in the beauty of Colorado with his 3-year old Dalmatian/ lab mix Lyla. Andrew also enjoys playing recreational basketball, homebrewing beer and cooking. Joelle thoroughly enjoys a good book, walking through the woods, drawing/painting and watching movies. Dr. Spiczenski says, “We have our annual 2-60 minute massage package for $99 special coming this March! Be on the lookout for more information.” They are members of the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary. Check out their reviews on Google/facebook/ yelp. Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture 2018, Year of the Dog

T

he fun superficiality of the Chinese calendar actually runs deeply from observations made thousands of years ago that still apply to life today. The Chinese calendar was invented by emperor Huang Di in 2637 BCE, (our Gregorian calendar was invented in 1582CE). Incidentally, the emperor also wrote one of the most important early texts (Neijing) regarding Chinese medicine, human life and living in harmony with our environment, or “universal law”. Maoshing Ni, translator of the Neijing said, “The observations in the Neijing were stunningly scientific. Its contents are as relevant for life in the twentieth century as they were two millennia ago”. The connection to “universal law” is pervasive throughout all aspects of being human, affecting day to day living, farming, health care, etc. As we strive to live in harmony with our environment, we also notice how we change and respond with each season. Each season corresponds to the Five Elements; fire/ summer, metal/autumn, water/winter, wood/spring, and earth/transitions, as well as internal organs, sound, direction, etc. The calendar also incorporates the Five Elements, and for the next two years the Earth element is prominent. Earth has to do with the digestive system, the mouth, transformation, mediation, and rather than relating to one of the four directions, the Earthly direction is the middle/center. According to the Chinese calendar, 2018 is the 4715th year. The New Year marks the start of a new lunar cycle and falls at the beginning of spring, (in China) when the earth wakes up from dormancy and brings forth new life. Spring is a time when people have a tendency to clean their environment, homes and their bodies in order to give plenty of room for new growth, both physically and emotionally. This new year, or “Spring Festival” is the year of the Earth Dog beginning on Friday, February 16. While the details run very deeply when we consider that the year will impact each person according to where

and when each individual was born, we can also consider what we generally know about the Earth element and the Dog. In general, the Earth element relates to the ability to nurture and properly care for ourselves and others, the colors brown and yellow, the sweet flavor, the transition between each season, muscle, physical strength, stability and coordination, and the digestive organs Stomach and Pancreas. The nature of Dogs also relates to the Earth element, and trust, unconditional love, loyalty, protection, stability, teaching, and of course, “pack mentality”. Dogs tend to stay loyal and protective of their pack, whether it is a family of humans or other dogs. Dogs are very much “on the surface” - they clearly communicate their needs and intentions to other animals and humans. The Brown Earth Dog is then a year of ‘double earth’ and so this is a good year to gather support for anything we’d like to accomplish. The key is to continue to work hard to prepare for the future rather than getting sucked into curling up on the porch basking in the sun or chasing the ball over and over again. There is potential for stability, but with the risk of getting very comfortable and ‘stuck in the mud’. Also worth mentioning is the Dog’s incredible sense of smell. It would be fitting for us to pay extra attention to this sense, and ask ourselves, “what information is this scent providing?”...

Corrective Exercise Programs To Fix Bad Posture

W

hen you slouch, the head and shoulders go forward, and your upper back hunches over. This is becoming a more common problem the more we look for long periods of time down at our phones (called "text neck"), tablets, and lap tops. The forward head posture changes the center of gravity of your head, so the further forward your neck, the heavier your head gets. At 3 inches forward, the average 10 pound head actually feels like 30 pounds. The effects of sustained forward head posture can cause pain in your neck, shoulder, back muscles and can contribute to the loss of health and function. Overtime, muscles and ligaments become trained to move differently with some muscles becoming overly strong and others weak. A Corrective Exercise Program is recommended to help improve posture and ease neck and back pain. There are many benefits of good posture including reducing stress, spinal protection/ alignment, increase local blood circulation, elimination of muscle imbalances, and decreasing risk of injury. I can help you identify specific postural problems you’re experiencing by performing a Posture Analysis. I'll takes pictures of your posture that the software can accurately calculate how your posture is affecting the weight bearing load on your body leading to instability, wear and tear. After the Posture Analysis, you'll receive a PDF of your results with specific details on deviations, muscle weaknesses, etc. I'll be giving you a Corrective Exercise Program consisting of specific exercises

Mead Food Bank Moving

T

he Mead Food Bank will be moving into a new and larger lo-cat-ion soon! We are very ex-cit-ed and we are looking for several items that will help the Food Bank function in their new home. If you, or someone you know, would like to do-nate please let me know. These items need to be in fair-ly nice condi-tion as the Mead Food Bank col-lects food for those in need and we have to be careful as to what items we can use for food storage. We don't need a fan-cy one....just one that will keep the food cold. Also we could use wooden pal-ettes to keep the food off the floor. For now, this is all we need to get our new home in or-der! I will let you know if we are in need of any-thing else which is quite possible. Thank you! If you have any of these items please let me know. My email ad-dress is dbancroft8@ gmail.com or you can re-ply here. Please send me your name, the item you have and a number so we can reach you! Thank you so much for tak-ing the time to read this! Frederick Wins National Award for National Night Out Frederick named the only Colorado winner for towns with 5,00015,000 population

T

he Frederick Police Department was recently named a National Award Winner by the National Association of Town Watch for its outstanding participation in the 34th Annual National Night Out this year. Frederick was one of 31 towns with a population between 5,000 and 15,000 across the United States to receive this honor, and the only Colorado winner in that population bracket. Frederick has a very active Neighborhood Watch group and eight neighborhoods hosted National Night Out celebrations for their neighborhoods in 2017. Officers worked their way around Frederick to participate in each celebration throughout the evening. It was the ninth year for Frederick to participate in the national program which is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

“We strive to work hard to build a partnership within our Neighborhood Watch program here in Frederick,” said Frederick Police Chief Todd Norris. “This award is a reflection of all the hard work and commitment between citizens and police officers working together in the community.” The 34th Annual National Night Out campaign involved 38.6 million neighbors across 16,377 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide. You can see the full list of winners at www.natw.org/award-winners. Anyone interested in learning more about or joining the Neighborhood Watch Program is encouraged to contact the Frederick Police Department at 720.382.5700. 2015, the Town of Frederick Board of Trustees approved a 5% water rate increase each year until 2020. This rate increase will show on your January 2018 water bill. This increase will cover variable costs including line extensions, new services and new water projects such as the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP), which are necessary for Frederick’s future water supply. Frederick is well within the average water rates for the area, as many providers have already enacted increases in order to account for the continuously rising costs of water in Colorado. This increase will not affect any Frederick residents living west of I-25 as water is provided to those households by Left Hand Water District.

Walls Ceiling Trim

C

lients often ask us whether they should paint their walls only or include ceilings and trim as well. Of course the final decision is up to you, but there are a few factors that can help you decide. First and foremost it would be more cost effective to have all the work done at once, as your painter would not need to repeat the set up and take down process. Trim can sometimes be touched up if it's fairly new and the same paint is available, otherwise it may just look like it was touched up. Baseboards, moulding, doors, door jambs, casings and window sills are the most touched, nicked and kicked areas in your home and may not look as fresh once you have painted your walls. Trim is usually painted in semi-gloss paint, so imperfections

that happen over the years will be more noticeable. Although it is labor intensive, trim is best if repainted. Usually painted lighter than the walls or sometimes the same color, ceilings appear to be lighter because the light reflects off them more than the walls. Ceilings in many homes are painted with a contractor grade paint in what is called ceiling flat white, but a trend we see in newer homes is ceilings sprayed with the same paint as the walls, usually in an eggshell sheen which produces more glare. Generally ceilings aren’t painted as often as the walls, but sometimes, next to freshly painted walls, your ceiling may appear too dim. There is not anything wrong with ceiling flat white, but if you want color on your ceilings, one consideration is to paint them in a 50% formula of your wall color in a flat sheen. We paint ceilings in all colors with excellent results!

What Facebook Newsfeed Changes Mean for Businesses

T

he next time you check Facebook, you may only see a few articles from news publications or posts from other organizations you follow — if you see any at all. Facebook announced sweeping changes to its service and particularly to the way the news feed feature works. Many news organizations, bloggers and businesses have grown reliant on Facebook to spread information — articles, videos, infomercials — to their followers without paying for ads. If you have a business page, don’t panic. Do these things: -Choose quality content over quantity of content. -Post content that connects with users and sparks engagement by eliciting clicks, comments and conversations. -Explore the options Facebook already offers to boost visibility.

-Ask friends on your page to customize their news feed by clicking "See First" on the news feed tab. N e e d help with your business page? A one hour consultation is $75. Make A New Years Resolution to Change a Child's Life as a Mentor with "I Have A Dream"

T

he hard part of resolutions aren't making them, but keeping them. Make your resolution goal easy this year by promising to have fun with one of our amazing kids! You not only get fulfilling work, but you also help them succeed in and outside of school. "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County supports its at-risk youth from elementary school through college, but it's the one-on-one mentorships that provide an essential role model they can count on in their lives. Did you know that at-risk youth with a mentor are 55% more likely to be enrolled in college? That illustrates the impact you can have as a mentor. This January, National Mentor Month, we are celebrating our mentors, who commit at least one year to a Dreamer Scholar. But many stay longer! Our mentors stay an average of 2.2 years with their mentee. From real estate agents, to retired research physicists, physical therapists, and college students, our mentors bring numerous experiences to share with their Dreamer Scholar. Currently, 170 community members actively serve as mentors to students in the "I Have A Dream" program. But that leaves about 340 youth without one. You can be the reason our youth share this: "Having a mentor makes me feel fantastic and it has taught me to be

social with people." - Aron "Having a mentor makes me feel good and happy." - Sameer "The best thing about having a mentor is making slime together. Having a mentor has taught me to get to know new places and try new foods." - Juanis This National Mentor Month, "I Have A Dream" is looking for adult mentors who are positive role models and are excited to provide Dreamers with long-term, reliable, one-on-one guidance and support. Our next training is coming up quickly: February 21, so be sure to apply today! Mentors see their Dreamer twice per month for a minimum one-year commitment. Mentors are needed for Dreamers in third through 12th grade. Male and Latino/a mentors are especially needed. For questions about the mentor program, contact Director of Volunteers Ashley Keltner at 303-444-3636 ext. 19.

Are You Waiting for the Market to Don’t let fear drive your decision! Get with your agent and Come Down?

A

common theme these days for home owners in our Colorado Front Range market is, I have a ton of equity in my home but I don’t want to sell and purchase at the top of the market. We talk with past clients on a weekly basis and we hear this from them constantly. They want to move but the fear is real! As an agent it is our job to educate them and a simple analysis of supply and demand will tell you this market is not slowing down any time soon. Last month, our Multiple Listing Services (MLS) showed us there were less than 4,000 available single family residential listings in our area under the price of $600,000. These MLS’s cover an approximate area from the Wyoming border down past Castle Rock. If we add new construction homes and For Sale By Owner listings in that mix that number might double….might! Past trends tell us that a healthy, balanced housing inventory should be upward of 20,000. With approximately 100,000 people moving to Colorado on an annual basis the past couple years, you can see the demand outweighs the supply by a mile.

get educated on what this market is really doing. Buyers are successfully closing on homes every day. Here at Sellstate Peak Realty we teach our agents to educate first, prepare second, and perform third. Below are a few ways we like to prepare our clients prior to jumping into this market. Feel free to contact us with any questions. • Price your current home accurately. It doesn’t do you any good on the buy side if your current home is sitting on the market overpriced. • If you receive multiple offers on your home, take the time to analyze them all thoroughly with your agent. Highest offer price doesn’t always equate to best offer! • Get with a lender that offers fully underwriting loan preapprovals. It shows sellers you are serious and in my opinion is 2nd only to cash offers. It immediately puts you in a strong position to win in a multiple offer scenario.

Stampeding Bull Market May Slow Down … So Be Prepared

A

s you know, we’ve been enjoying a long period of steadily rising stock prices. Of course, this bull market won’t last forever – and when it does start losing steam, you, as an investor, need to be prepared. Before we look at how you can ready yourself for a new phase in the investment environment, let’s consider some facts about the current situation: Length – This bull market, which began in 2009, is the second-oldest in the past 100 years – and it’s about twice as long as the average bull market. Strength – Since the start of this long rally, the stock market has produced an average annualized gain of 15.5% per year. While these figures are impressive, they aren’t necessarily predictive – so how much longer can this bull market continue to “stampede”? No one can say for sure, but there’s no mandatory expiration date for bull markets – in fact, they don’t generally die of old age, but typically expire either because of a recession or the bursting of a bubble, such as the “dot.com” bubble of 2000 or the housing bubble of 2007. And right now, most market experts don’t see either event on the near-term horizon. Still, this doesn’t mean you should necessarily expect an uninterrupted streak of big gains. Some signs point to

greater market volatility and lower returns. To navigate this changing landscape, think about these suggestions: Consider rebalancing your portfolio. If appropriate, you may want to rebalance your investment mix to ensure you have a reasonable percentage of stocks – to help provide the growth you need to achieve your goals – and enough fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, to help reduce your portfolio’s vulnerability to market volatility and potential short-term downturns. Look beyond U.S. borders. At any given time, U.S. stocks may be doing well, while international stocks are slumping – and vice versa. So, when volatility hits the U.S. markets – as it surely will, at some time – you can help reduce the impact on your portfolio if you also own some international equities. Keep in mind, though, that international investments bring some specific risks, such as currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events. Develop a strategy. You may want to work with a financial professional to identify a strategy to cope with a more turbulent investment atmosphere. Such a strategy can keep you from overreacting to market downturns and possibly even help you capitalize on short-term pullbacks. You could invest systematically by putting

"Your Tri-Town Neighbor" the same amount of money in the same investments each month. When prices go up, your investment dollars will buy fewer shares, and when prices drop, you’ll buy more shares. And the more shares you own, the greater your potential for accumulation. However, this strategy, sometimes known as dollar cost averaging, won’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses, and you need to be willing to keep investing when share prices are declining. During a raging bull market, it’s not all that hard for anyone to invest successfully. But it becomes more challenging when the inevitable volatility and market downturns appear. Making the moves described above can help you keep moving toward your goals – even when the “bull” has taken a breather.

Our FHS students also helped to donate and tie blankets for Project Warm Up. Together with about 100 other members of our community over 300 blankets were tied.

Center of Influence

C

ongratulations to Frederick High School Football Coach Travis Peeples for being selected to represent Colorado at the prestigious 2018 US Army - All American Bowl in San Antonio, TX last month. Coach Peeples was honored as a Center of Influence because of the positive impact he has on his players and students. He was selected by a committee as one of 50 people that spent 4 days with the Army Personnel and learned about what the Army can do for our FHS students futures. Coach Peeples is pictured here with a former student athlete, Lorenzo Lingard. : "I had the privilege of Coaching Lorenzo Lingard, a 5 star recruit who committed to the University of Miami, from 2009-2012 in a youth football program in Florida." Coach Peeples formerly lived in Florida and is now the head Football Coach at Frederick High School. Coach Peeples continues to be a "Center of Influence" to FHS students and FHS football players. This past summer he volunteered with his players participating in local Habitat for Humanity projects and with helping out local seniors with yard work.

Firestone Ranked One of Colorado’s Top Safest Cities Based on Safewise Report of Colorado Cities with Lowest Crime Rates

S

afeWise has once again ranked Firestone as one of the top twenty safest municipalities in Colorado based on its annual review of FBI crime report statistics and population data. Firestone was listed thirteen out of twenty in 2016 and moved up in 2017, to a ranking of ninth. “We are very proud to once again be ranked so high. We commend not only our police force and first responders, but also our citizens, for their commitment to keeping Firestone a crime-free community and a great place to live” said Bruce Nickerson, Firestone town manager. According to the SafeWise announcement, “Forward-thinking safety measures may be one reason the twenty safest cities in Colorado report an average of less than one violent crime per

1,000 people, according to the FBI’s most recent crime report. That is one third of the national rate. The impressively low crime rate of The Centennial State’s safest cities carried through to property crime, where they cited fewer than seven of these crimes per 1,000 people. Taking a closer look at the FBI report, we were pleased to find that nine cities reported zero motor vehicle thefts. Additionally, over half of the twenty safest cities in Colorado cited fewer than fifty burglaries—which is a good indication that citizens are looking out for one another and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement.” For more on the report, visit: https:// www.safewise.com/blog/safest-citiescolorado/ and for more information on Firestone visit The Town of Firestone website at: http://www.firestoneco.gov.

Holiday Va Visit & Project Popcorn

I

saiah Kloczkowski, a Cub Scout with Pack 341, teamed up with Carbon Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9741 Auxiliary to bring popcorn to veterans at our regional VA hospitals and nursing homes – and personally thank them for their service. Monetary donations were given to purchase bags of popcorn, caramel corn, chocolate-covered pretzels, and other sweet and savory treats from Cub Scout Pack 341 to deliver to our military heroes. On December 21st, Cub Scout Pack 341, Girl Scout Troop 77911 and the Carbon Valley VFW Post # 9741 Auxiliary delivered popcorn to the Cheyenne VA Hospital. The group also sang Christmas carols and distributed items such as homemade quilts, hats, and scarves to veterans. 90% of donations were used to

purchase Trail’s End products to be donated to veterans. 10% supported Carbon Valley VFW Post 9741 Auxiliary’s programs benefiting veterans, active military and youth in our communities. Carbon Valley VFW Post #9741 Auxiliary meetings are held every fourth Tuesday at the American Legion 870 1st Street Firestone, CO 80520 starting at 6:30 pm. The Auxiliary encourages those interested in learning more about the VFW Auxiliary to come and learn how they can help make an impact on the lives of veterans in the Carbon Valley area. Smart Homes

T

echnology is giving us the ability to have a “smart home”. With lower prices and more widespread marketing, many people are now purchasing and using smart home technologies. Many of these things deal with items that we already use, it just brings the item to your fingertips. Here are some of the applications: Smart Locks – augmenting existing deadbolt systems through wireless protocols, like Bluetooth, in order to allow your smart phone to become a key into your home. You can assign digital keys to visitors and check the status of the lock when you are away. Smart Doorbells – provides you an easy way to see who is at your door, regardless of your location. Potentially adding peace of mind, security and convenience. Smart Indoor Air Quality Sensors – can measure potentially dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and dioxide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, as well as temperature and humidity. You can have a sense of what your indoor air quality is and take action to resolve issues. Smart Leak Detectors – useful for anyone worried about water damage. Can be used for sump pits, septic systems or basement areas to alert you if water reaches a certain level. Smart Security Cameras – provide the ability to keep an eye on things in and around your home. Often motion activated to let you

know when someone is there. Smart Speakers – not only for controlling music or a Q&A resource, but can serve as controllers for some of the other devices in your home. Smart Lights – have a cool factor with all of the possible color combinations and can also improve the user’s quality of life. Smart Thermostats – give you the ability to customize the heating and cooling from anywhere. Smart Hubs – can streamline your experience by bring all your Smart devices together into one place. Like with anything else, there are pros and cons to these technologies, including how they can affect the purchase or sale of a home. Make sure you discuss with your Realtor things like: Do you really want to hear what buyers are saying about your home? How are negotiations effected by knowing s o m e o n e might be listening? What devices are included in the sale? What passwords need to be changed for the buyer?

I'm proud of the fact that women can come in and ask if they need their brakes replaced and they will receive an honest answer,” says Marna, co-founder of Boyd and Sons. Boyd and Son’s mission is to be an honest repair shop where customers feel they are receiving a fair price for their service. They routinely have customers bring in estimates to see if they really need the work done. Marna declares, “We treat our customers like family!” Mark and Marna Boyd founded Boyd and Sons, located at 4035 NE County Line Rd. in Erie, because they were tired of working for companies that didn't value their employees. Twelve years later their clients come from far and wide to receive Boyd and Sons service, honest advice and pricing. Boyd and Sons repairs most autos and nearly everything else. If it happens to be something that only a dealer can fix, they let the customer know. They perform custom welding and electrical wiring on trailers and service compact utility tractors, lawn, garden and push mowers. Although most clients are from the I-25 Corridor area, it’s common to find customers making the trek from mountain areas or the Greeley area for service. But they also sell equipment as well. They have E Go electric snow blowers for sale. Check out their video demonstration on Facebook at www.facebook.com/

Bright Futures Board Makes Changes, Bringing Strength And Sustainability To Workforce Program

T

he members of the Weld County Bright Futures Board of Directors began meeting in August of this last year and within just a few busy months, they have transformed the Bright Futures program into a strong and sustainable program focused on meeting the needs of the Weld County workforce. The first step on the board’s docket was evaluation. One of the strengths the program had was the number of students who knew about the program and were applying. Within three semesters, over 2,600 students have been Bright Futures recipients and it has already lead to students completing certifications and beginning new jobs here in Weld County. The biggest objective that the board is focusing on is sustainability. Weld County, among many other areas in Colorado, is growing rapidly and it was important to find a way that this program can grow with the community. Changes to create this sustainability included:

• Adjusting the annual amount a student can receive each year up to $2,000. • The Bright Futures application now requires the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) to be completed annually as well. • Changing the guideline that the stipend must be used within ten years from the graduation or GED date to requiring it to be begun within two years and completed within six years. • Moving the stipend from “first dollar in” to “last dollar in.” This means that the Bright Futures stipend will be applied in conjunction with all other scholarships or stipends instead of initially. • Requiring an annual 16 hours of community service in Weld County from each student in the program. These changes will take effect with the upcoming graduation class and will apply to all Bright Future participants beginning August 2018. In addition to these changes,

Interim Director Amy Tallent has also proposed a schedule of ensuring the funding comes from a strong donation base over the course of five years. Another item the board reviewed is the geographic region in which the stipend may be used. The program initially didn’t include any geographic restrictions if it was applied to a Title IV institution. To enable and develop the associated Bright Futures mentoring program that will seek to create an environment of success for participants, the board unanimously voted to limit the region the stipend may be used to include only schools/institutions within Colorado and its bordering states that Bright Futures has or will have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with. This process will allow employers

and institutions the ability to participate and partner on developing opportunities that will strengthen the Weld County workforce. Changes will take effect in August of 2019 to give time to students that are currently in programs outside of this area the opportunity to finish certifications or degrees and prepare for the change. “Education and training is an important key to financial well-being and self-sufficiency,” stated Upstate Director Rich Werner. “By giving the opportunity to educate and train individuals we will also be creating and maintaining a desirable workforce that can align with the needed skill set of employers across the region.” For more information on how you can participate in the Bright Futures program, please visit www.brightfuturesco.com.

"As Christians we must rejoice in the fact that we are God’s; it is He who has made us and not we ourselves. We do not float through our allotted time willy-nilly, trying to remember to pray that we luck out in places we find ourselves. Rather we should earnestly pray to see God’s hand in our lives’ events… we must bathe every decision in prayer to seek His will (God promises never to leaves such prayers unanswered)… we must be patient to hear His voice and His leading… and we must pray for spiritual discernment to guard against crowding out His answers with our desires." You are not alone...

S

cheels continues to support Veterans in northern Colorado. Since arriving in Johnstown, Colorado Scheels is proving over and over again their culture is one of support for our American Heroes, our military Veterans. Last week they made yet another donation to a northern Colorado organization that provides face to face, direct support for Veterans and their families, and then connects them to resources needed. The resources include many non-conventional therapies and support systems. Thank you Scheels for supporting those who created and support our American Freedoms!

Frederick Police Department Gets Lifesaving Grant from Anadarko Frederick purchases four AEDs for police vehicles with donation from Anadarko

T

he Frederick Police Department was recently awarded a grant from the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in the amount of $6,400.00. The grant was awarded for the purchase of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to be deployed in police vehicles while officers patrol the Town of Frederick. The AEDs cost about $1,600.00 each, allowing the department to purchase four units. AEDs are used when an individual goes into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). They are small portable devices which can deliver an electric shock to a person’s heart. This shock can help to stop abnormal electrical impulses in the heart

Since 1958

and allow it to return to a normal beating rhythm. Without early CPR and AED use, only about 2.5% percent of SCA victims survive. But, initiation of early CPR and AED use within minutes of SCA can raise a victim’s chance of survival to almost 80%. “We’re so grateful to Anadarko for this grant that gives Frederick PD a valuable lifesaving resource,” said Frederick Police Chief Todd Norris. It is important for police officers to be equipped and trained in the use of an AED due to the fact that a patrol officer is often first to arrive at the scene of a medical emergency that may require the use of an AED on an adult or child victim. All Frederick patrol officers are currently trained in the use of Automatic External Defibrillators, CPR, and first aid. This grant will afford a valuable lifesaving resource to be available to the citizens of Frederick in the event of a medical emergency. PHOTO: Sergeant Bob Bedsaul displays one of the new AEDs that were purchased using a grant from Anadarko.

Winter Coats Hazardous to Children in Car Seats

W

ith snow and colder temperatures expected in many parts of Colorado this weekend, Car Seats Colorado is reminding parents and caregivers that bulky winter coats pose a danger to children riding in car seats and should not be worn underneath the harness. While it may seem counterintuitive (who wouldn’t bundle their child up when it’s freezing outside?), strapping your child into his or her car seat while wearing a puffy winter jacket can actually be very dangerous. That’s because during a crash, the material of the coat compresses, leaving the harness straps too loose to be effective. “Of course parents have good intentions when they bundle their children up before getting in the car,” said Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Trooper Tim Sutherland, Child Passenger Safety Coordinator for Car Seats Colorado. “But it’s important to recognize that car seats are only effective when used correctly, and unfortunately this is one of the more common mistakes we see.” Photos and B-roll of the pinch test, and interviews with Sam Cole, CDOT Safety Communications Manager and Trooper Tim Sutherland, available here: https:// www.dropbox.com/sh/a6kmkl0eks2v8uu/ AACCmQF1fwS9rdMaUsmmbly0a?dl=0 How do you know if your child’s coat is too bulky? • Put the coat on your child and strap them into their car seat. Tighten the harness until you can’t pinch any excess strap between your thumb and forefinger (this is the “pinch test” to make sure the harness is tight enough). • Without loosening the harness, remove your child from the car seat. • Take the coat off, put your child back in the car seat and buckle the harness. • Now try the pinch test again — if you can pinch excess fabric on the shoulder strap then the coat is too bulky to be worn under the harness.

Here’s what to do instead: • For infants and smaller children, put a blanket over the child in the car seat to keep them warm. Do not cover the entire car seat with the blanket — this can restrict air flow and

may lead to carbon dioxide poisoning. • For toddlers and older children, you can put a blanket over the child after they’ve been strapped into the harness, or turn their jacket around and put their arms through it backward to keep warm. • Be very careful not to overheat your child — a baby bundled up with blankets in the car while the heat is blasting can quickly lead to overheating.

Car crashes are a leading cause of death among children under the age of 13 nationwide and, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), three out of four children are not properly restrained when riding in vehicles. “Sadly, between 2010 and 2016, 27 children riding unrestrained in a vehicle were fatally injured on Colorado roads,” said Sam Cole, Safety Communications Manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). “Our priority is making sure parents and caregivers have the knowledge, tools and resources to keep their kids safe when riding in vehicles.” Factors contributing to improperly restrained children include an improperly installed car seat, use of a car seat that does not fit the child based on their size and the seat manufacturer’s limits, and not properly securing the harness or seat belt. To have your car seat inspected to ensure it is properly installed, visit one of Car Seats Colorado’s inspection stations located throughout the state. Car Seats Colorado provides education and resources to help parents ensure their children are riding safely, as well as recycling programs for used car seats and training courses for safety technicians.
